Hello everyone, I have a bit of an interest in programming and I am looking pick it up, though my interest is not great enough to become an obsession currently, as such I was wonder what is the best way to go about learning a couple languages would be. I dont do well online, I do well enough in person though I must observed. I have a late diagnosis as I could finish work quick enough in school that it didn't appear that I had ADHD when looking at academic's, though colleague and personal life painted a very different picture. I have seen a couple coding bootcamps that look mildly apealing, apart from the 10k ish price tag and the relocation aspect. Anyways, thank you advance for any help.

2023.05.10 17:36 One-Taste- Hi first time dm here, I am making my first world / campaign for a party of 6 below are some all of my current notes on it. Any improvements, adjustments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks!

News: Between every session (will usally be updated on a wednesday) events will happen in the world that changes the general way the world acts these come in three ways, Local, Contentainal and Global, Local is depended on your area at the end of each session and has little to no effect unless you choose to remain in said area, contenental will effect the entire contenent for example the raining monarch dieing or a stike in certain trades (locksmiths, blacksmiths, famers, bakers. ect) and Global is well Global it effects the entire world. Effects of Local Contental and Global: Local: A poor harvest, food prices have increased by 10% A okay harvest, no effect A plentiful harvest, -10% food cost A local criminal has been arrested, celebrations in the town A local festival, flower, bread, beer ect Contenatial: Monarch has died: A new monarch must be named possible royal elections few days unrest maybe strike: certain trades are going on strike A poor harvest: same as local (stacks, linear not exponential) War has been declared: 10% Tax increase (if implemented) potential drafting Global: Collapse of a empire: A continent has been wiped out in a war the new land must be claimed War Has been declared: same as Contenatial A monarch has died: (only shown on a slow news day) A new realm of existence has been discovered: ??? A power balance change: A changer in the normal power order (new unique quest!) Nativity: Nativity is where you hail from (one of the 5 nations unless you are a voidling) each having different knowledge and experiences Skypillar: Due to the academic nature of the kingdom you know lots of books and authors off by heart to do with a certain field and read/ learn from texts 10% faster Neutral: You have Indepth knowledge of the loopholes and tricks in the finical system ( 20% to evade tax and 10% more customers is you own a store) *note: If caught trying to evade tax you will be subject to punishment Celestial: The religious nature of this area allows you to name most religious facts and have deep rooted connections to people who could help you (+15 to religion) Voidsent: You know that only the strong survive. (when below 10 Hp (temp) gain +2 in any attribute you choose apart from con) Forbidden: Peoples actions do not scare you no matter what they do and people find it incredibley hard to read your emotions (+5 to survival +2 to nature, cannot speak of what you have seen in the Forbidden area and you cannot tell anyone you originate from there)
!DO NOT PICK! Global: Can name most animals in your home nations +10 move speed in towns and cities of your home region (this applies to everyone no matter what they choose)
Religions:Religions will be chosen by players while making their character sheet each one effecting how the character will act in different ways these effects can range from having a compeling feeling to help those in need to devoting your life to waitng for being from another woeld to appear. There are 3 mainstream religions 2 massive religions (check religon growth chart for clarifaction) along side this players can create their own religon, however it will start as a cult, choose the pillars of the religion and gain/ lose followers and develop their religions to the stage of mainstream or above. Mainstream religions: (CG-CE)Santaism: through out the years a rumor had spread that a legendery being called "santa" exists, he is a thin man dressed in green that enters bad kids houses every "december 25th" and punishes them for according to their bad deeds. santaists will pray every friday(2 short rests / 2hours) to santa to attempt to repent for their sins however it is also said that he will accept the sacrifice of a good childs blood on a black moon by following a certian layout. Santaists tend not to follow any other traditions than giving a gift worth 1 silver to fellow santaists every month, some groups sacrifice the higest ranking member to santa every black moon aswell it is seen as a great honor and wearing a full black robe... everywhere. (N) Order Of Tavelers (OoT): Throughout the thousends of years that the order has recorded in their scrolls beings claiming to be from other worlds have been recorded to appear at sacred sites, it appears that these people only have two things in common, one is that they all have special powers two is that they all claim to remeber going to a place of pure white apart from a shadowy figure before appering in this world. It is the mission of the order to make sure these beings arrive safely and explain how the world works and trying to persuade them to use their powers for good. OoT members spend at least 1 hour a day debating about this shadowy figure and along with other things. apon joining the order you are given your membership card it gives proof that you belong to the OoT and ensures you and one other person from your party gets food warmth and shelter at and OoT establishment. (LG)beingism: Beingists belive that no matter how powerful you get there is always a being maore powerful than youself either in a diffrent plane of existance or a different part of the world some pray never to meet this being other pray to meet and learn from this being, what would you pray for? (atleast 3 hours a day) beinists will wear a silver badge with their logo on the upper right hand side of their torso, beingists are always kind, law abideing and genourous people when asked why all theysaid is the higher power, is it repect or fear? As a beinist you have in depth knowledge of the "mythological" creatures that are said to hold near unlimited power, wait is this true? Massive religions: (CE)Matterists: (Radical branch of the Voidists.) These religious "freaks" believe that everyone should be dead and their matter spread back into the universe along with everyone being the same person they are typicaly accosiated with crimes such as: Murder,Theft,Rape. ect the only thing they have in common is that when ever they are brought to justice they will not settle for a sentence less then death, if the verdict is lower they will make up false crimes or evidence to try and increase the punishment they will often be seen weating clothes with a pentagram on (not its not a deminic symbol in this world) P.S dont ask me how this is a religion it's more like a crime syndicate but oh well. (LG-CE)Voidists: Voidists beleieve that individual actions do not matter as we will all just die at some point or other and that your actions do not matter as they are just a tiny blip in an incomprehensible amount of time. There are no true traditions accosiated with voidists but they can often been seen staring of into space or at random objects seemingly shuting themselves off from the world while they are thinking, the very little that is know about voidism is that they often deabate for 5 hours a day giving them a greater understanding of the world around them but this costs them in socal skills. Thier attire is nothing special with only a half face mask made from black material and white dots being the only noteable feature.
Cults: players can make their own religion as mentioned before but it will begin as a cult every week events will hapen that can cuase the religon to lose or gain followers. how this happens is the Dm will roll 1d6 if the results are: 1-2: lose followers 3-4: nothing 5-6: gain followers if it is on 1-2 or 5-6 then the DM will roll a d20 and add/subtract the landed number until 100+ followers at wich point it will become the percentil dice players can choose 3 of the following "pillars" to make up the religion: reckless: our action dont have consequences. benevolant: we must look after those less fortunate than ourselves. power driven: the only way to progress ones self is though power evolutionary: will change with events in game isolated: well you live in isolation ofc fearful: You know there is a more powerful being in existance and fear for your life from it adaptive: you religion isn't sure of its self and will constantly change(will be the only one you choose) revolutionary: you challenge everything and try to make new norms mimic: you copy some aspects from larger religions and become a "sub-branch" of that religion. Note: cults start at 21 members (including the playe leader)
Adventures' guild system:This is a way to earn money in this campiagn. Each major city in the cooperating kingdoms will have a guild hall where players can accept quests or commisions and put their own quests up.(Kingdoms:TBC) The system is split into several ranks, each rank allowing the players accept greater quests that bring more danger (generally) but better payment. Ranks: player (once they have gained enough experience/reputation) can undertake a test to attempt to rank up to the next rank these tests are uniform across all guild halls *content of tests is TBC but will NOT be shared* E: starting rank, not much to say, can accept low danger gathering quests like collecting medical herbs from green glade in skypillar kingdom (level 1 monsters) these will typically pay 1-2 bronze but urgent will pay 3 D: technically the starting rank, can take gathering quests in areas that contain a monster level of 5 or lower 2-4 bronze Urgent 5 bronze C: Allows the player to form a party and take on hunt missions like hunting a LV10 Bronze tiger, no change to gathering quests hunt will pay 6-9 bronze and Urgent 12 bronze (1 sliver 2 bronze) B: Allows player to post their own quests for NPCs (DM) to accept A: Can mentor lower level Adventures on low level quests to earn tuition fees (from the student or the guild depends on the location) and a small payment of 6 Bronze no matter the quest S: Players can now take on a Hunt mission alone pays 5 silver if completed eye witnesses 7 if the quest asks for a specified piece of evidence (E.G severed head of the commision) SS: Players can now open and run their own guild halls ( will be funded by player but they can make an apeal to the main branch for funding.
The skypillar kingdom, (arcane foucused realm, to the north) Voidsent nation,("convict" state, to the south) forbidden realm,(?????,to the east) celestial Sovereign state,(religion based, to the west) netrual "superpower" (dead center of the known world, center of trading and commerce) the nobility in the skypillar kingdom (lowest to highest, with requirements to join, and power in the country, repsect oytside of the country) Baron: has a relatively small amount of land, holds little to no political power in the skypillar kingdom usally has <10 servants/maids, not regcognised outside of the skypillar kingdom, basically just a glorified pesant requirements: 50 silver coins / 5 Gold coins, a property in a main city that is at least worth 5 Gold, A good reputation within your social area. I just found out that the grade in one of my classes that I am failing is not going to be able to be recovered and I am already have an academic warning after getting suspended twice and apealing. Does anyone have advice of what to do, if there is a way to get by without going to school, or maybe a way to attend a different college.
Since I have already messed up so many times I have no idea how I am going to tell my parents. I would appreciate any advice I can get and can give more context if you leave a comment.

2015.08.10 05:11 TomasTTEngin Scarcity

tl;dr Dealing with scarcity is scientifically proven to make everything harder.
I just finished reading a book called Scarcity, by two US academics – a Harvard economist and a Princeton psychologist. It’s an economics book, sort of. But mostly it’s completely innovative.
It contains a theory of a new kind. One I had never thought of, but which I have found very useful.
The theory is that scarcity – no matter what its source – affects your brain. People affected by scarcity have their mental capacities focused on the problem at hand. And that diminishes their ability to deal with everything else.
The authors use four main categories of scarcity in the book.
material poverty: a scarcity of money; being too busy: having a scarcity of time; being on a diet: facing a scarcity of permitted calories; being lonely: having a scarcity of social connections.
For each category they find similar effects on mental capacities.
The person facing scarcity focuses on their own immediate problem, which gains them a limited upside in that sphere – perhaps they scrounge and borrow enough to pay this weeks rent, or remain disciplined enough to not eat dessert tonight. But the focus means other things are ignored to their detriment. They may not be focused at work, for example.
Anyone who has tried to play a computer game and hold a conversation at the same time knows performance and distraction are not compatible.
The theory that scarcity is distracting is well-backed by research. For example, simply reminding people of their financial constraints can lead to a drop in IQ of over 10 points in one famous study.
You don't have to be a genius to see where I'm going with this. People with CFS are managaing a budget all the time. The thing that is scarce is energy. It may even be more binding and more stressful to be managing your energy budget than it is to be managing your financial budget.
Of course many people with CFS are managing tight finances as well as tight energy budgets.
The theory these academics put forward is apealling theory in part because it knits well with a socially progressive view of the world.
The poor, data shows, are worse at sending their kids to school, at taking medicines, at getting their forms filled in at Centrelink, at quitting smoking, eating well, etc. This is a puzzle that would appear to lend credence to a conservative viewpoint that says the poor are lazy.
This theory as expounded in the book helps explains these phenomena by reference to the circumstances of poverty, rather than by blaming the individual.
The authors created a study in which Princeton students had to play Family Feud. They were allocated to either a “rich” group with plenty of time to answer the questions, or a “poor” group with little time to do so. The poor focused hard. They made more correct guesses per second. But the rich outperformed them overall. Then the authors offered the groups the opportunity to “borrow” time from future rounds for use in the current round. The “poor” group’s performance overall tumbled as they borrowed more and more. The scarcity mindset itself led to poor decision-making.
The book is excellent at describing scarcity traps, where we get behind – in payments or on a schedule – and constantly borrow from the future, all the while sinking deeper and deeper into the morass.
For those of us not stuck in grinding poverty, the book has some great examples of how to avoid being stuck in a scarcity trap. It is eloquent on the need for “slack” in order for systems to function. Much like when the fridge is literally full to bursting you can access nothing in there easily and and things tend to fall out onto the floor, any system that has no slack is inefficient.
A great example comes from a hospital which was able to manage its surgery schedule far better by leaving one operating theatre empty for emergencies. The authors are also advocates of agreeing to fewer commitments than you can manage, and of leaving spare space in your diary so meetings can be moved around without creating disastrous cascades.
The seed of the book, in fact, comes when Professor Mullainathan, writing a book chapter about low-income Americans, sees a great deal of his own time management habits in the budgeting of Americans with payday loans and food stamps. The commonality of the scarcity mindset – which makes a top economist likely to snap at his kids because he’s stressed and busy – is reinforced throughout the book, all the while acknowledging poverty is a more severe, more binding problem than being over-committed at work.
The suggestion scarcity can be better managed with explicit provision for slack could have pay-offs in any number of realms. For people with CFS, I guess we call this pacing. It's nice to have another way of looking at the problem though.

2013.06.13 08:36 jedipaul9 Elder Badge or Bust

I'm still a pretty young fella. If I don't relapse my 21st birthday will fall on day 84 of this streak, for those of you who like math. I spent years using porn as a means to run away from sadness, loneliness, boredom etc all the while wondering why I felt as though my life was going nowhere. Attempting not to sound so melodramatic, the past 6 years of my life felt like a repeating cycle of existential crises intermittent with the gnawing hunger for new and edgier porn. At age 16 I felt like I had hit the wall and all but completely checked out of my social and academic life. Until three weeks ago today I had never made the connection between PMO and the problems I was facing.
I don't have any stories about superpowers or rejuvenated sex apeal. But I can tell you what nofap has taught me so far. I have learned that: * I can close my eyes and fall asleep without fapping. * when I wake up in the morning I can get out of bed without fapping. * when I have spare time before I have to do something I can do something other than fapping. * I can stay outside of the house for days at a time without having to worry about whether or not I'll be able to fap. * I can be happy and enjoy my life without fapping.
So in light of all of this I have decided to make things slightly more interesting for myself here. When I took on nofap I decidedly chose to attempt to pay as little attention to my day count as possible so as to keep my focus where I need them, but now I have decided that I am taking on the 90 day challenge with a whole new motivation in mind: the Elder Badge. This young fapstronaut will stop at nothing short of the greatness of said Elder Badge and I'm gonna do it with your help.
The challenge has been set so I've go 3 words for you NoFap Bring. It. On.
