For context, I’m a 25yo female, that comes from a mixed background (my mother 56F is a white woman from Italy, my father is from the Balkans and migrated to my country when he was younger). This is relevant and you will understand later.
I moved away from home as soon as I could when I was 18 after a not so good childhood, and currently live in another European country. My parents are divorced, my father is not really in the picture, I keep in touch with my mother on a daily basis and come visit her and the rest of the family once or twice a year. We never had the best relationship but since I moved out it improved a lot. I’d say we get along better when I’m far away from home.
Anyway, back to the reason of this post. I’ve been seeing this guy for more than a year, he’s great, we’re slowly getting to know each other and see where this is going. We are not in a rush but of course this is a relationship and I felt it was time to tell something more to my mother. I’ve always been quite open about my relationships and people I was dating, however since getting older I started being more private as I don’t think it would be good to mention every failed date to my mother (lol). We come from a typical small town where people are bigots and close-minded. The news on the tv are constantly complaining about “immigrants coming to our country” and jadajadajada. The government is right wing. So yeah, being racist is almost the norm, unfortunately.
I didn’t really mentioned much about this guy, first of all cause I’m trying to keep it private but also because I could imagine her reaction, since she’s the standard average middle age woman that you find on Facebook without much culture. She is ignorant not as an insult but in the real sense of the word: she ignores, she doesn’t inform herself and just believes whatever the media tells her.
The day after I arrived we were casually talking before bed and she just kept asking “C’mon, don’t you have a pic of this guy? Show me! C’mon c’mon! I’m your mother!” so, one side of me didn’t wanna show her, the other one was excited cause at the end of the day I’m proud of my relationship and I was happy to tell her more (maybe naively hoping for a good outcome…). So without thinking much I showed her one of the best pictures of him. Literally in the millisecond while I was showing her the picture she said something like: “hope it’s not a n****” (WHATTT???).
At that point the phone was already on her face. It was done. She said it, and at the same time she saw the picture. She was speechless and I was too. I was ashamed of her. And sad.
She didn’t say anything more for the following 10 minutes, she went to her room and I went to mine. Afterwards she just asked “does he even work?!” And I told her “don’t worry about it, he’s better off than the both of us” just to make her shut up about that question that I found so disrespectful. This made me just so sad, and disappointed.
But the worst had yet to come. We didn’t speak much about it at all until today.
We were having a casual conversation during the afternoon when the relationship topic came out. In particular, we were talking about how your partner should improve your life and not making it worse, meaning he should make you happy, he should bring good positive vibes, get along etc. that’s what I was thinking and referring to. But she started being very materialistic, she asked me “so, in which way is he improving your life?!” in a very aggressive sassy tone “I don’t see anything changing“ she said. I was mentioning that he makes me happy when the conversation degenerated. All sort of things came out of it.
She started by saying:
“well, I truly hopes this will be just a friend and you will keep it like that”
then she continued with:
“please take birth control precautions before you regret it”
“don’t come to me later saying I didn’t stop you”
and the cherry on top was:
“I would have preferred if you told me you were a lesbian cause at least that is cool nowadays”.
I was speechless and I still am.
I asked her what is it that she doesn’t like and what is she basing her opinions on, since she literally knows nothing about him. She couldn’t answer. She kept repeating the same things over and over and she also said she would never want to meet him.
I have to mention that the few guys she met that I was dating were of different cultures, but she never had a problem with them, I guess because the skin color was the same… and in her mind there are probably foreigners of Class A, B, C…
I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but I neither expected such a bad reaction.
All this hurts me so much.
I don’t know what to do.
In my mind it neither makes sense cause she married an immigrant but it seems like she never really came to terms with it, she never really accepted it. For instance, I know nothing about my father’s culture, I never learned the language or interesting facts about it because nobody ever thought me anything about it. I only learned about my mother’s culture, the one of the country I lived in. And I always felt out of place because this country is extremely racist. The fact that my father was not a good husband or father has nothing to do with where he comes from. If a person is an idiot, is an idiot no matter what. And I told her this when we were talking. The fact that she had a bad experience doesn’t mean that I will, just because I’m seeing someone from a different culture. I also explained to her that I am myself an immigrant, since I’m living in another country. But it doesn’t seem to click in her head. And when I told her, to her face, that she is indeed racist, she obviously denied it, because how can she be racist if she married an immigrant herself?
And of course during today’s conversation there was some victim behavior on her side, because every time I come back here it’s certain that we are gonna fight and every time it happens I say stuff like “let’s see when and if I will come back again!”. So she was bringing that up cause the other day I said “the first racist comment I hear I’m gone”. She mentioned that, saying I don’t care about her, that she has to beg for me to call her (mind you, we write good morning, good night, text here and there during the day and we talk on the phone 3/4 times a week…). She even said that “she lost me already the moment I left”. Honestly, I don’t know what else more than this she expects from me if what I do is not enough already.
I don’t really know how to handle this. And I’m also just venting and need some support. I wished we could all act as adults, respect each other, have a normal relationship. Am I asking for too much?!
Any advice is highly appreciated.

There are tons of buildings vs bridges threads but I don't see a lot of conversations about heavy civil (ie. dams, spillways, mining, industrial facilities). I'm an EIT working for a buildings firm that I love. Principals are young and laid back, environment is friendly, architect works inhouse so not as much bs there. I like the variety and creativity of the work I do here but I don't feel like I'm risk-adverse enough to be an EOR in this industry. Designs are rushed out, double-checking is minimal, we leave so many details to fabricators/suppliers and "check" their 300 page shop drawing submissions. The amount of risk involved to take responsibility for all that seems insane to me, I'm not sure if I want this to be my career path.
Having said all that, I like the creative freedom and short time span of buildings projects. I've heard heavy civil projects can get very repetitive, bureaucratic and drawn out. I don't know much about the industry, I'm trying to figure out if the pros outweigh the cons and if I should make a career change.

A few problems I have with my Blink 3 is that it doesn't detect motion after a certain distance I believe, I set motion zones, higher sensitivity and still doesn't detect motion near the driver door area of my driveway... And it has a 10 second period between motion clips where it does not record or alert... And it requires a 3rd device, the Sync Module, would preferably (again, not required) like to avoid having something like that, something directly to your phone... There was a few times my Ring and Blink didn't detect when I had packages dropped off a while ago (I don't know if it's the AI or whatever thinking it's not an urgent alert or whatever it may be), not a problem recently. My Ring has coloring issue where it's all green for a few seconds. Do any of those brands have these problems or any others??
What are the Pros and Cons between the 3? Anything else I should consider? Maybe if someone knows of a better camera company? Please and thank you.

I wanted to add my own interesting experience here for anyone on Ubuntu 22.04 running Bookstack v24.02.3 and Nginx.
The latest Bookstack v24.05 requires PHP 8.1 or higher. FYI, stock 22.04 has PHP v8.1.x, so you should be OK.
I thought - why not upgrade the Ubuntu distribution to 24.04 (latest at time of this writing) in order to get PHP 8.3 and hedge against future releases? I've been able to do Ubuntu in-place upgrades for the last one or two releases without issue. We are on hypervisors so snapshotting and attempting upgrades has very little risk.
My initial installation of Ubuntu basically stock wizard-click - not much attention to partitioning because everything is running on a SAN / virtual machine. So the /boot partition was the abysmally small 450MB or so default, and the rest of everything is on an LVM2 partition which can be easily managed in various ways.
As it turns out, you have to first upgrade to 23.x and then to 24.04 beacuse the normal release cadence doesn't get exposed until August 2024 when they release 24.04.1. The upgrade stopped short because there wasn't enough room on the /boot partition to support this process. Running apt autoremove didn't come anywhere close to solving the problem.
And thus began my hours long trail of tears attempting to expand the /boot drive. Never did I imagine how difficult this would be to do, and I sorely wish I had paid more attention to partitioning it properly in the first place, or (despite 'best practices') putting the /boot in the LVM parition.
Let's just say you'll need Kubuntu mountable .iso, and a carefully curated series of steps to do it properly. Here are my steps in general; you still need to know what you're doing, this is not a point click manual. Try at your own risk, this is just a hope it could save people time.

Assumptions

You're on a virtual machine. If not, this is still possible, but it won't be an exact recipe.
Ensure you have a backup.
We're going to move the default Ubuntu installation "/boot" partition to another, larger "/boot" partition. It will remain outside of and not participating in an LVM.
This assumes you're on a simplistic "/dev/sda" kind of configuration. If not, pay special attention to what you're editing in order to match your setup.
You have sudo privileges.
If you encounter an error, stop and revert or get help.

How to

This was performed on 22.04.x LTS.
Before starting, know the boot partition format (ext2, ext4, etc.) and its size. It should hopefully be easily recognizable by its very small size. You can get this by simply Do: "df -h"

Download the latest Kubuntu release.
Mount the Kubuntu .iso to your VM.
Add 5GB of unallocated space to the exsting VM disk using VMWare, Nutanix, hypervisor of choice.
Power on VM.
Choose "Try Kubuntu" at boot prompt
Choose "Try Kubuntu" when presented to get live boot, close welcome screen
Start / Run "KDE Partition Manager" (no root password when prompted just continue)
Ensure entire disk is selected on the left hand side
You'll see a small (probably ext2) partition. Just ensure you're choosing the boot partition. Right-click "COPY".
Choose the unallocated partition and right-click "PASTE".
- A new screen will appear.
- Expand the bar to the right by click-dragging it to be the maximum. This can be frustrating because the ability to drag is like a pixel wide. Just ensure it consumes the entire bar.
- Click OK.
At the bottom in pending operations it will state something like, "Copy parition /dev/sda1 (XXXmb) to unallocated space starting at (something) on /dev/sda and grow it to 5.00 GiB"
Click "Apply"
You will now have a new partition "/dev/sda3" or the like, depending on your original installation.
Right-click the original boot partition and click "Properties".
Uncheck the "boot" flag. Click "OK".
Click "Apply"
Right-click the new partition and click "Properties".
Check the "boot" flag. Click "OK".
Click "Apply"
Right-click the new partition and click "Edit Mount Point". In the Path, type, "/boot" and click OK. It should spout something about overwriting "/etc/fstab", which it claims to do but doesn't... probably because it's a live CD. Click "Save Changes".
Right-click the new parition and click "Properties".
Screenshot the new UUID. We can get it again easily later for copy/paste.
Close the partition manager and reboot to your normal Ubuntu installation.

It's going to use the old partition to boot, because we haven't updated the rest yet in the live system. Once the system is back up, do the following:

Do: "df -h" you should see "/boot" still on the old partition with very little room. This is normal.
Do: "sudo blkid"
This should show you the UUID of the new partition as something like /dev/sda3 or the like. Copy it.
Do "sudo nano /etc/fstab". Consider making a backup before you edit, just in case.
- Copy the old /boot entry to another line, then comment out the old one.
- Replace the new line UUID with the new UUID. Save changes.
Reboot, log in.
Now we want to tell Grub about our new boot partition.
- Do: "sudo grub-install /dev/sda".
- Do: "sudo update-grub".
Reboot, log in.
Do: "df -h". You should see your new partition (mine was /dev/sda3) as the "/boot" partition with lots of free space! If not, stop here and read up or revert.
We're going to remove the old partition:
- Do "sudo parted"
- Do "print all". This will show you the partitions - get the number of the old boot partition you want to remove.
- Do "rm 1" (or whatever number your original boot partition was).
- Do "print all" and ensure the partition is gone.
- Do "quit" to quit.
Reboot and ensure all is well.

You will have a partition left that you can't do anything about, or at least that I'm aware of. Considering it's probably 500MB, it's not a worry to me. If you look at it in Kubuntu, it is unallocated space.

So I'm not entirely sure what people typically charge for something like this.
I am putting together a brand guidelines that will include a logo, color palette, typography, secondary graphics, and photography direction. I'm also providing context examples like sample one pagers, social posts, ads. We've done around 4 rounds of feedback to get it to the right place.
Just curious what you guys would charge for something like this. I have 8 yrs of experience with branding, but I've never created a full brand for a company as a freelancer. Since I'm doing this with a friend of mine, we discussed that this would be charged as a project fee and I'll invoice her at the end.

Dyson V12 Detect Slim - $540

The Dyson V12 Detect Slim comes closer to an ideal stick vac than any other model available. It’s light and nimble around furniture and on stairs, and it even works on shelves, walls, and ceilings.
The V12 Detect Slim rivals more expensive vacuums (such as the Dyson V15) in suction, airflow, and cleaning power, and it comes with multiple brushes and attachments, including a motorized brush for pet hair. It runs for 45 minutes on a single charge, longer than most of the other vacuums.
It has high-tech features that make it almost fun to use, including a sensor that automatically adjusts suction, a laser headlight that illuminates dust in dim corners, and an LCD screen with a battery countdown and other information. It’s also one of the quietest models.

Tineco Pure One S11 - $300

The Pure One S11 comes with a variety of useful cleaning attachments, and it shrinks down into a handheld vacuum that you can use to give your furniture or the inside of your car a quick clean too. It features four-stage HEPA filtration to help keep your home's air quality in check, and we were also intrigued by the subtle ring of color-changing lights on the top of the canister that glows red whenever the vacuum detects dirt, then change to blue as it sucks everything up. When cleaning is finished, you can stash the thing away on its wall-mounted charging dock.
The Pure One S11's black-and-white build is perhaps a bit bland, and I wish that it offered a bit more than 40 minutes of runtime under optimal conditions. Still, those are fair trade-offs at this price, especially considering how well it cleans.

Kenmore Elite CSV Max DS4095 - $150

Most cordless stick vacuums that cost less than $200 are terrible. The Kenmore Elite CSV Max Cordless Stick Vacuum DS4095 is a rare exception, but it still makes major trade-offs.
It’s a superb cleaner on both rugs and bare floors, picking up fur and debris almost as effectively as our top picks. This lightweight model cleverly folds in half for easier cleaning under furniture, and it has an extra-large, 33-ounce dustbin. It offers a solid 38-minute run time and recharges in four hours, similar to the Dyson V12 Detect Slim.

I'm a 22m united statesian math student from the midwest. At some point, I realized that math is actually (secretly) a humanity, so my closest friends have been less engineer types and more artists, historians, college philosophers, and people with a lot of empathy.
Normally, I can just hang out with my film roommates or weird people at the library, but I've got flipped seasonal depression where the loneliest time for me is summer, so this is my annual post looking for online friends to chat with.
I'm looking for people that are cool (REQUIRED), academic (ish), and more than anything curious in seeing just how far their passions go. There's way more meaning in being brave with what you do than in being smart.

Some passions of mine:

math - I'm finally doing the trifecta of undergrad classes my old math-ish degree deprived me of: real analysis, number theory, and topology. Most of my thinking energy the past year has been applied to recursive functions, data structures, and border math/cs topics I'm so sick of at this point. I can't wait to be writing proof by contradictions again for homework. My favorite "sup" is definitely the great supremum.
reading - my summer list: Stella Maris (the McCarthy epic), Permanent Record (Snowden book), Wolf Hall (tudor-core), and Traitor to His Class (bio on the coolest Roosevelt). I mostly read classic literature and history + mythology books. I'm gifting Kafka on the Shore by Murakami to my English teacher friend as it left a real mark on me when I read it last year. Also with everything going on in Palestine and the nearby protests, Chomsky and Orwell essays are so clarifying.
linux/code - I know I dissed it above, but there's definitely a before/after FOSS in my life where you discover just how composable everything is with pipes and streams. I run unix with vim, emacs, dmenu and all the rest. I like programming in golang and lisp and wanna learn haskell. LaTeX equations are also very beautiful.
history - I visited Vienna a few weeks back and saw a cool Marshal Joseph Radetzky statue. It was interesting putting myself in the mind of those 1848 Viennese students and their revolution crushed by the state power of an eighty-year-old catholic Joe... Anyway, reading about the imperial krauts is neat. Knowing about the past makes travel, talking to geriatrics, and old coins way more fun, so I've always appreciated political, cultural, and religious history.

Littler things I like:

Singing beatles karaoke at open mics
Emailing random authors at 2 a.m.

Talking to goofy kids, old people with endangered idioms, foreigners in their own language, anyone not cowed into being boring

I was talking about what would happen if Power Rangers appeared in Fortnite and I'm not sure if they ever been involved in Lego before.
