Loose connector?
I recently had my windshield replaced after a big crack caused by a rock. The shop forgot to reconnect the windshield washer fluid hose (easy fix) but while the cover was off, I noticed this connector not connected to anything. Does anyone know what that’s for and where it should connect? Just checking to see if this is an easy fix I can do myself before I ask the glass repair shop.

2024.06.09 05:23 Designer_Raccoon_718 To claim or not to claim?

Recently my 2008 4runner Limited V8 (139k miles) was in a catastrophic hail storm, baseball size. Started a claim but have t done the virtual inspection through State Farm yet. Went to two hail repair shops and both stated that it’s prob $10k - $12k damage and will prob total the vehicle. They would need to replace hood and roof, plus windshield, then paint everything but the doors to color match. I’ve made suspension upgrades and wheel/tire upgrades to this vehicle. It’s considered a rare find due to the V8. I’ve seen similar trucks being sold by dealers for $15k - 20k. Love this truck too much to give up. As I understand it, if they total it, they will offer me a check to buy it (probably lowballed) and if I choose to keep it then they’ll offer me even less. So infuriating. Can’t decide what the smarter move it. Just buy a new hood myself ($1200 painted) and not worry about the roof (which is barely visible bc it’s lifted) then just get the other few spots repaired that are visible. or risk continuing with the claim and getting cut a check worth a fraction of my truck and paying out of pocket for the rest of the repairs just so I can get comprehensive coverage again.
I can’t understate how much I hate insurance companies. Such a goddamn racket.

2024.06.09 04:14 -Knockabout Is it worth fixing my car? (2006 Toyota Camry, 230k mi)

The car in question: 2006 Toyota Camry, 230k miles, 6 Cyl 3.3L engine, automatic transmission.
I was hoping to get a more technical perspective on my dilemma of whether to buy a used car to replace my 2006 Toyota Camry. I have the money to buy a good used car (looking at 2019 Honda Fit, <15k miles, good condition, $18k for argument's sake) already ready after a few years of saving, so interest rates/financing aren't a problem, just the total cost.
The car has been driven regularly since 2006, though I've only taken it out for errands and occasional 4-hr roundtrip visits to family for the last few years. I started noticing last year that I was going less time in between each visit to the mechanics. Part of that is because I have a small oil leak that the mechanic said would not be worth repairing on my car (I want to say the fix would've been something like 5k; it wasn't the valve cover but something else causing the leak), so I've gotten oil changes more regularly, but part of it is also the car developing new sounds/behaviors I've wanted to investigate before the next trip to see family.
Currently, the main issue with the car is that it shakes on acceleration (sometimes severely, most often noticeable but not violent), and most lights on the dash are on and have remained on despite previous attempts to get them to shut off as part of other maintenance (VSC, ABS, check engine). And of course the small oil leak that makes it so I have to get the oil changed a little more frequently. Here's the list of issues the shop I go to mentioned during the last oil change, with the severity/urgency they marked:
Sorry about the long list. They quoted about 4-5k to fix the concrete things they noticed (so not the dashboard lights, I imagine those would be additional diagnostics after fixing other things). That's obviously a lot less than $18k, but is this the beginning of the end for my Camry?
I do know one popular piece of advice is to stop fixing a car if its repairs = car payments. At least according to my budget sheets, I spent about ~$2000 on repairs on it last year (did a lot of "attention soon" items alongside "immediate attention" like replacing serpentine belt, etc), and ~$800 the year before. I've spent ~$500 so far this year on just what I needed to be safe driving (radiator hose, tail lights, windshield wipers). So the costs seem to be rising, especially if I were to do the 4-5k repair. This year and last would average out to about $3000 a year, or $250 a month. So a little less or a little more than my car payment would theoretically be if I didn't plan to pay it off immediately (depending on cash down), but I'm worried things will get worse.
I'm not very car savvy. Though I do google what I can, this judgement call feels beyond me. Any help anyone could give would be appreciated.
EDIT: I've been dealing with this one for years, but in case it's relevant: the radio also cuts in and out inconsistently. Once it starts, it'll keep doing it every couple seconds for hours, but I'll go several trips without it happening sometimes. So I guess there's something funky with the wiring somewhere?

2024.06.09 02:35 Ok_Piano_8707 Progressive vs Geico

I’m sad to say I have to start shopping around. I’ve been with Geico for 8 years, my car insurance keeps going up ($157) while my car depreciates. I’m in a city, which is why it’s so high, but it’s a garage kept car and I put roughly 9,500 miles on it per year.
Only reason I’m hesitant to pull the trigger is I love geico’s app and their responsiveness. My car is prone to cracked windshields. I haven’t had one in a while (knock on wood) but I usually pull up geico’s app schedule a safelite appointment and it’s $50. Can anyone share their experience with progressive? They’re giving me a quote that’s half what I’m paying with Geico.
For reference (if it matters any) I’m 32F and I think I have clean record, no accidents, never a late payment.

2024.06.08 23:29 bastyle2 How am I doing?

How am I doing?
Hey everyone. Been in here awhile and commented a bit but haven’t posted much. My project is basically bringing a worn out Z back to life. In September 2022 I bought an auto 2004 350z Touring with 252k miles on it for $3500. Cracked windshield, 12gauge wire holding one of the brake calipers in place, interior falling apart. But it drove the 4.5 hours home from a dirt road in Alabama to Florida. Spitting oil out the back the whole time. Since then I rebuilt the engine (minus piston rings), manual swapped (amazing deal on parts including some exhaust), had a small tune, swapped the interior to black, recovered the seats with new leather. New headlights, new windshield, new suspension (temporary, plan on some BC coilovers soon), new brakes, RE wrapped the steering wheel (it was falling apart), new Motegei wheels (not the best but the ones on it where rusting to nothingness). And if you notice the Amazon splitter on the bumper it’s covering a massive crack (cheaper than the bumper I plan on putting on eventually). Other planned repairs are body mounts, diff bushings and brace and eventually an upgrade to the brakes. Engine could potentially go whenever with the miles it has but that’s a problem for when it happens. Already have an extra I’m about to start refreshing.

Is this a defect or a rock
I had my windshield replaced recently and I now have a large crack in my windshield and I’m wondering if it’s worth me checking to see if this is covered under the warranty. If I bring it to Safelite, I have to drop my car off for three hours, so I’m just trying to see if it’s worth me Bringing it in before I waste that time.

2024.06.08 18:08 Aggravating-Value437 SAFELITE AUTO GLASS CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT

Hey Reddit,
Had Safelite replace my windshield on May 25th, and the technician ended up breaking it during the process. I wasn’t informed about any risks, and no liability waivers were signed.
When I tried to resolve this, the corporate member I spoke with basically told me to kick rocks. I'm looking to gather others with similar experiences to consider a lawsuit and expose their unjust business practices.
Anyone else had issues with Safelite? Let’s connect!
Thanks.

2024.06.08 16:27 cyanrarroll Carpenter's and contractors, I need the lowest cost way to haul my tools and garbage around

I'm self-employed as a residential carpenter and handyman in the northern midwest. Right now I use a 1 ton flat bed truck to haul around a pretty badly beaten 7x14 enclosed tool trailer and use the truck to move dirt and garbage from job sites. I handle a lot of different jobs from building fences and historical exteriors to doing interior finish work and drywall finishing. The truck is absolutely on it's last legs, and it's completely uneconomic to repair it. Every single system is broken: the locks, fuel gauge, windshield wipers, cabin fan, power steering, it burns oil, it burns coolant, front tires are completely bald, and probably more things I haven't discovered. The engine began a loud knock yesterday so I know I have to make some changes soon.
However, I really can't find anything that seems reasonably priced as a replacement truck. I'm not making enough money to consider getting any sort of financing, even for used, and I don't want the fear of the monthly payment always hanging over my head. I'm willing to spend up to 15k to change everything. I've considered a van for tools with a dump trailer, but vans seem more expensive than trucks. I could get an SUV and split my tools between the vehicle and a flat trailer with job boxes, but it makes grabbing tools hard in bad weather. The crazier idea would be to get a larger sedan and have two 3000 pound trailers, one for tools and one flat bed. Most of my work is within a 10 minute drive so moving two trailers on site is not that big of a deal, but some customers could be put off.
I do want to be somewhat environmentally conscious about all this. I've lived without a vehicle for most of my adult life, so this would be entirely for work purposes. I don't need it for grocery store runs or driving friends around, so this thing will be weighed down with work materials almost every mile it goes.

2024.06.08 11:44 MelMcT2009 Extended warranty - what does it include

So I recently got my GH, and purchased the extended warranty for around 4,000. It covers bumper to bumper issues, key fob replacement (already had to use that), roadside assistance including free towing, tire replacement, dent repair, windshield crack repair.
Is this the same as the platinum warranty that everyone talks about on here, or does what I got cover more? I called the dealership to ask when I saw that people were getting the “platinum” warranty for much less, and they seemed to not know what I was talking about when referring to that specific warranty.

2024.06.08 04:11 Ratherbeeatingpizza Lets play Fix it or Fade it!

Im not sure if this is a finance question or a car question or maybe both.
Currently own a 2009 Audi A5, 215k kms. Its been remarkably reliable for me over the years but it is getting tired. Ive got a couple check engine lights on, a cracked windshield and will need some tires and some other maintenance items (Ive been doing my own oil changes, filters and spark plugs on it). Theres some rust bubbles etc starting as well. I would estimate I could be looking at $3k of work in the near term. The car is far from a collector so its value isnt much more than that. I dont drive much since the lockdown as i primarily WFH, so maybe 5k kms/yr. Public transit is not an option where I live. I do enjoy the car but obviously its technology is dated and may start to incur more repair bills. I doubt resale value will be very much due to age, condition and it does have a small accident in its history (a deer t-boned it when my wife was driving it) repaired long ago, but still not a pristine carfax.
Alternative 1) My elderly aunt no longer wants her 2009 Lexus SUV (whatever their low end model was at the time). Same age as my car, but its a garage queen...dealer maintained, garage stored, about 100k kms. I dont really love SUV's but it may be a practical choice due its better condition and lower mileage than my car...havent talked turkey with her so will assume market value or a little less....eg $5k?
Alternative 2) what I really would like is a newer car, something like another Audi or BMW, 2015-2018, preferably convertible (owning a convertible some day is a bucket list item). Costs would be somewhere around $25-30k. Concerns would be, its still a used car, may inherit some repairs on it as well. But I would have to pull from my investments a much larger chunk to pay for it ie opportunity cost.
The advantage of 2/3 are that in 2 years my daughter will turn 16 and as my current car is a manual I will want to teach her in an automatic, which she may continue to use occasionally. I know purists will say make her learn in a manual but I dont want to put the additional stress on her learning experience just to pickup a mostly obsolete skill, not to mention the additional wear and tear on the clutch may finish off my Audi for good. My wife has a company car but their insurance will strictly prohibit my daughter from driving it.
What would you do? Fix it (current audi) or Fade it?

2024.06.07 20:26 Aelis_ I think my neighbor is trying to commit insurance fraud against me

Last Friday my neighbor sent a text to my fiancee claiming I did damage to his car because I backed up too close and sprayed rocks on his car when I left the house one day. We have a gravel driveway, and he was asking for my insurance information.
There are 3-4 nicks smaller than the head of a pin in his windshield and ONE the same size on his fender. He claims they are 'rock chips' but there aren't even cracks in the glass, it's all surface. It's literally some regular wear and tear shit. He has a picture of some tire marks left in front of his car, so he was saying I did it.
There's no actual proof that I did it as he didn't see it happen and there's no video to prove that I left them, but even if I did, it would be even harder to prove the chips actually came from those tire marks.
But since I'm not a jerk and I saw the damage was so light out of goodwill I said it was possible it could have been me so I was willing to give him $300 to cover rock chip kit and touch up paint as he said himself the damage was so light he figured he could do it himself. Which was generous as a rock chip kit is like $30 and he ALREADY had touch up paint which he USED on the car for other nicks that he said it already had when he got it from the dealership. I told him we'd both be careful pulling out of the drive and I didn't see the need to go to insurance as it wasn't damage that would go over a grand and also there was no real proof it was me.
The next day he comes with an invoice claiming he needs a windshield repair for $900 and needed $300 for touch up paint. We asked if he had anyone look at the damage he said no. We offered to go with him to see a professional and ask if rock chip repair could be done and if a windshield replacement was needed and if so we would pay for it. He said no he didn't want to do that and kept insisting the windshield is structurally unsound but refused to have anyone look at it. Because he obviously knows that if we all go together we'll get to witness a professional telling him it's stupid to ask for a new windshield for this and that it's probably not even worth fixing.
He then said he'd go through his own insurance but the deductible was $500 and I said fine I'll pay it but it will be a check to your insurance or to the shop that does the repair. He wasn't happy with that and kept insisting on getting my insurance. I didn't give it to him.
Today I get a call from my company saying that I have a claim. I'm beyond fucking pissed and shocked that it even went through because as I said the 'damage' is at regular wear and tear level. I don't even know how he got my information. I'm wondering should I just deny it and say there's no proof or tell them that I offered him solutions out of goodwill and tell them I think he's trying to commit fraud? I don't want them to try and take the fact I did offer to compensate him as admittance of guilt. Any other advice as well?
Thanks all.

2024.06.07 18:50 niedopalekk Failed the 3rd part of the exam twice, really need some help

I tried to abide by this general system for rating Needs Met:
FM: Only if it correctly answers a Know Simple query in a SCRB, or if the result is the specific website or webpage that the query was looking for
HM: If it answers a Know Simple query, or provides a good, helpful answer for the most common interpretation of a more general question, and its on a well-designed website with the answer thats easily found on the landing page
MM: It gives a somewhat less common or reputable answer to a general query, or if it gives a correct answer to a Know Simple its buried under lots of extraneous information (for example, in a long article requiring a lot of scrolling)
SM: It gives a rare or not particularly helpful answer to a general question, or it doesnt really answer a Know Simple question but gives some fairly relevant information at least (for example, I would think a query for "stress rash treatments" is most likely looking for immediate remedies after symptoms already appeared, so a result that only gives a list of preventative measures I would rate SM)
FM: Gives completely wrong, unhelpful, or misleading information to a question, is the wrong website for a specific website query, is a business that's relevant to a VIP query but is outside their locale, the page does not load and there is no helpful 404 page, etc
What am I doing wrong? I'm also having trouble understanding what exactly warrants an in-between rating like MM+ as opposed to just HM or MM.
I'm also not entirely sure how to objectively determine the criteria of helpfulness/thoroughness/ease of navigation for MM or SM ratings. Examples of MM ratings I gave:
-A result for a query about how dangerous cracked windshields are, that's from a source with obvious expertise and provides thorough information, however it contradicts most of the other results from similarly reputable sources, and its answer particularly seems to be a bit biased by the fact that they're trying to sell you windshield repair
-A result for the query asking for the demonym of people from New Jersey, which correctly provides the answer but its quite far down an article with a LOT of extra information...should something like this be HM if all that additional information is interesting and well researched, even if it obscures the answer to the main query?
-A result for a query asking about wedding invitation costs, which is just the homepage for a company that does orders for custom wedding invitations, where the average costs of their particular invitations is given far down the page.
Lastly, what exactly is the protocol with questions asking for a calculation, like a particular yearly salary, I think I also get tripped up by/overthink those because nearly all of the results will just be from calculator websites that either correctly gives the answer up front or has it preloaded into their calculator widget. Would ALL of those be HM?
Please help me out if you can, I REALLY need a remote part time job and I REALLY don't want to spend another 4 hours of my time doing free work just to fail

2024.06.07 17:43 Tewan Anyone have any luck with rental reimbursement through customer care?

TLDR: Has anyone had any luck with getting rental reimbursed through a customer care case? Tried to get some clearer information but they were rather vague and unhelpful on the phone.
Have been going through an absolute nightmare for the last month. Vehicle was involved in a hailstorm and the windshield sustained a little damage, so was going to be replaced.
First windshield came in and it was damaged, so another was ordered which took a few days to come in. The vehicle was already completed with all the other repairs at this point, just waiting on the windshield.
Next windshield comes in, checked the condition and looked no damage so the windshield was removed from the vehicle, cracking in the process. They go to install the new windshield and it turns out to be misboxed. Part number on box is correct, part number on windshield is wrong. Now the vehicle is in an undriveable state. Parts department was called, info given, and another windshield ordered. Again, going to be a few days out (~4 days).
Next windshield gets in, dealer checks condition and it's damaged so they order another, this time coming from California instead of Dallas (vehicle is currently in Houston). They expect 4-6 days again. I open a case through Kia customer care because at this point it is absurd that three windshields have arrived damaged and none of them could be expedited to arrive sooner.
This windshield finally shows up, dealer checks it, and it is also damaged. They go to order another and find out there are no more available in the US and it is now on backordecoming from overseas. By now the rental covered through my insurance is no longer authorized because it's past 30 days. I follow-up with customer care with the update as the body shop I use had also reached out after finding this out, not knowing I had created a case already to inquire about rental reimbursement and an expected arrival for the newly ordered windshield but was given very vague information on both. Apparently once the windshield finally arrives and is in good condition I can submit a rental reimbursement review for them to determine if they'll pay anything. I have no clue how long I'm now going to be out a vehicle, it may be two weeks, it may be a month, it may be longer. Not having a clear answer on if rental would be covered could potentially result in thousands in rental charges.
