And no, I’m not talking about how they got their big break on children's shows or how their tumultuous relationships have received widespread media coverage throughout their tenure as A-List pop stars. Selena and Ariana seem to share a far more troubling characteristic, which is their addiction to drama and victimhood. The fiery media storm and accompanying anti-Dalton and anti-Lily rhetoric being spouted by the internet and diehard fans since Eternal Sunshine's drop yesterday eerily reminds me of Selena's one-sided and very cleverly plotted attacks on other female celebrities (Hailey Bieber, Kylie Jenner, and Bella Hadid) as well as Hailey's husband, Justin Bieber, back in the first half of 2023.
To go in chronological order, I’ll attempt to swiftly explain Selena's one-sided TikTok feud with Hailey Bieber before pointing out the similarities of that situation and this current one with Dalton and Ariana's allegations against him. I also want to preface by saying that I do not condone cheating at all and empathize with anyone who has been impacted by that. I am not excusing either Ariana or Dalton's actions but rather arguing that both Selena and Ariana are essentially unreliable narrators of the stories they are trying to sell. Nor am I a fan of any of the celebrity names that will be mentioned.
In January 2023, Selenators won a Gold Medal in the 2023 Mental Gymnastics by accusing Hailey Bieber and the Kendall sisters of bullying Selena Gomez through their completely unrelated-to-Selena TikTok posts and Instagram stories. While both Hailey and Kylie did try to put out the drama by clarifying that their posts were not directed at anyone, Selena Gomez seemingly triumphed at the chance to lean into the victim narrative by engaging with an unfathomable number of TikToks throughout the next few months. These TikToks in question accused Hailey of being a “mean girl” and insulting Hailey and the Jenner sisters as “entitled nepo babies” and “bitches”. Selena Gomez would reply with heart emojis and “I love you’s” under these posts, while simultaneously calling for “less hate” against Kylie and Hailey. In another online incident, Selena self-deprecated herself and said she wished she looked like Bella Hadid. Consequentially, Selena's fans flooded the comment section by insulting Bella, calling her “unnatural”, and praising Selena's appearance by comparison. A key thing that Selena does when responding to this drama is purposefully trying to have it “both ways”. She wants to be able to depict herself as a loving, feminist girls' girl who is disgusted by the backlash her “haters” receive while simultaneously stoking the internets' anger against other women by using manipulative tactics such as saying “I don’t let the hate bother me!” - which affirms the idea that Hailey, Kendall, and Kylie were hating on Selena at all-, invoking the name of her best friend Taylor Swift (and thus summoning the rabid Swifties), and self-deprecating herself in the hopes that her fans will put other women down just to raise Selena up.
I see a similar pattern happening with Ariana and her recent plea for fans to back off from her ex-husband and others involved in the events written about in Eternal Sunshine. While it’s entirely possible that this is a genuine plea from Ariana- and hopefully, an effective one- I do not consider Ariana as having a very good character nor a high regard for others. After months of receiving tremendous hate and scrutiny due to SpongeGate, I think she is basking in the narcissistic glory of once again achieving victimhood status after accusing Dalton of being emotionally absent and even cheating. Aside from the fact that the lyrics being referenced require much more context than is given, Ariana is not better than anything her fans have accused Dalton of being. In “eternal sunshine”- the song fans are referencing as evidence that Dalton cheated- Ariana writes that she slept with someone else too! Any criticisms against Dalton are entirely applicable to Ariana as well- though I don’t think Dalton broke up a young family. But I’m rambling.
Ariana doesn’t need to be hateful or vengeful towards her ex-husband or Lilly. She has the vitriol and toxicity of her die-hard fan base to do that for her. She can reap the benefits of being seen as the victim- at the expense of Dalton's reputation and his and Lily's well-being- while still putting on the innocent act by half-heartedly imploring fans to stop harassing the people she writes about in poison ink. The tiny-worded plea in question is on her Instagram story, swamped amongst her other posts, all of which will have disappeared in the next twenty-four hours. Ariana will go on living her life, having lost nothing despite her awful actions, while the people she has used and discarded along the way (ie, Ethan, Dalton, and Lilly) will have to reap the consequences of her living her “most authentic life”.
