Daily Minors Quick-Notes 5/14/24 - Munguia Walks It Off
Ismael Munguia found the right moment for his first home run of the season…walking off the Dodgers Triple-A team. That’s a silver lining after the big league team…didn’t do that. And in two games to cover, the ACL Giants put forward a ton of offense.

AAA: Sacramento 3, Oklahoma City 1

Player of the Game: RF Ismael Munguia: 2-5, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 HR (1), 1 K
Munguia’s first home run couldn’t have come at a better time, a 2-run, tiebreaking, walkoff home run in the bottom of the 9th inning. He had 7 home runs in 84 games last season, mostly in Double-A. He’s hitting .247 with a .714 OPS this season.
Other Players to Spotlight:
  • LF Hunter Bishop: 1-4, 1 R, 2 K, 1 SB (1) - Bishop made his Triple-A debut as Sacramento needed extra bodies. He was hitting .242/.314/.350 in 26 games at Richmond.
  • 1B Trenton Brooks: 2-4, 1 2B (6), 1 K - Through 34 games, Brooks is hitting .264/.371/.400 with six doubles and three home runs.
  • SP Carson Seymour: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K - Seymour has 37 strikeouts to 16 walks in 34.1 innings
  • C Drew Cavanaugh: 2-3, 1 BB - Cavanaugh has really taken to Triple-A, as he’s 6-for-13 (.462), with two walks to two strikeouts.
Other Notable Lines:
  • RP Clay Helvey: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
  • 2B Justin Bench: 1-4, 2 K
Other Notes
Also promoted to Triple-A today was reliever Reggie Crawford, as the Giants promoted two first round picks (with Bishop as well) from Double-A to Triple-A.

AA: Game Postponed

This game will be made up on Thursday, May 16th as part of a doubleheader.

High-A: Everett 3, Eugene 2

Player of the Game: RF Rodolfo Nolasco: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 2B (1), 1 HR (1), 1 K
This was Nolasco’s second game with the organization after being traded for Daulton Jefferies, and it was a big one. In 21 games with Greensboro, Nolasco was hitting .173 with three doubles and two home runs.

Player of the Game: 3B Charlie Szykowny: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B (1), 1 K
Ever since his late start this season, Szykowny has been hitting well, going 10-for-25 (.400) with one double and two triples. He has four walks to five strikeouts.

2024.05.14 21:05 EJC28 Bills 2024 Draft Analysis Compilation

Round 2, Pick 33 - Keon Coleman, WR, Florida State:
NFL: After trading back twice on Thursday, the Bills stick at 33 and take a big, physical and athletically gifted target. Coleman isn't fast and isn't a deep threat, but he can win in a variety of ways. But who will Josh Allen's deep threat be? Stay tuned.
CBS Sports: C-. “X” receiver for a WR-needy team. Plays faster than his combine speed but doesn’t separate consistently and isn’t as good of a contested-catch wideout as his size and highlight-reel would indicate. Young though.
ESPN: After trading back twice, the Bills addressed the team's most significant position of need with Coleman, a big outside receiver with the ability to make splash plays -- 12 receiving touchdowns on contested catches since the start of 2022, second-most in the FBS, however, only a 31.7% contested catch percentage in 2023 -- to create separation and a release that general manager Brandon Beane described as "about as good as any." Beane acknowledged that while he's "probably not" going to run away from defenders, Buffalo feels his play speed is faster than the speed he showed at the combine -- 4.61 40-yard dash -- also noting that they liked his athletic ability that came from playing basketball. The Bills needed starting-level talent at outside receiver and Coleman, who turns 21 in May, fits into what Buffalo was looking for, while the team was still able to move back and add picks.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Believes that knitting is the original “Netflix and chill”.
Round 2, Pick 60 - Cole Bishop, S, Utah:
NFL: Safety was a big need for the Bills, and they go back to the Utes for help after taking Dalton Kincaid in Round 1 a year ago. Bishop is a very good athlete and field general who can play the post safety spot and cover a lot of ground. He played like the QB of the Utes' defense the past two years and could be a rookie starter for Buffalo.
CBS Sports: A-. Large, intimidating safety with magnificent movement skill. The QB of the defense. Aligns everywhere. Can wear many hats. Excelled as slot defender and vs. TEs in coverage and runs the alley on outside runs as well as any safety in the class. Ball skills and tackling must improve. Short arms. Need filled.
ESPN: Another pick for the Bills in the second round, another big need addressed. Drafting Bishop adds someone who can compete for a starting role this season, in addition to being a potential answer in the secondary after moving on from Jordan Poyer this offseason while Micah Hyde continues to contemplate retirement. Bishop has the ability to move all over the field, along with speed -- 4.45 40-yard dash -- and many of the qualities and instincts the Bills look for at the position.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: He always weebles and wobbles, but he won’t ever fall down.
Round 3, Pick 95 - DeWayne Carter, DT, Duke:
NFL: When I first watched Carter at the Senior Bowl, I wrote in my notes: "rolling ball of knives." Carter's game doesn't have a lot of pretty to it, but he's a scheme disruptor with his low center of gravity, ferocious style and nasty demeanor.
CBS Sports: B+. Active, high-energy interior rusher who’s on the ground a bit more than what’s desired because of his frenetic style. But it also gets him to the football more often than most DTs. Flashes of swim move and spin just needs to utilize them more. Length is a plus and he works hard vs. run. Some power too. Fills niche need on Buffalo’s defensive front. Needs to use his length better on passing downs.
ESPN: Using the pick acquired via the trade with the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday, the Bills addressed another hole with Carter bringing depth at defensive tackle. The three-technique tackle will have the opportunity to continue to develop -- potentially as Ed Oliver's backup -- adding to a defensive tackle room that has limited young talent. The Bills didn't draft a defensive tackle last year due to the way the board fell, but the team was able to add to the rotation early this year.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Still says ‘weeeeeeeeeee’ when on a playground swing.
Round 4, Pick 128 - Ray Davis, RB, Kentucky:
NFL: Davis has overcome a lot to reach this level, and though he lacks long speed, he can be a Zack Moss-like player for the Bills. Davis' vision and wicked spin move have left a few defenders in a blender.
CBS Sports: C. Compact, older RB with plus stop-start ability, married to his feet well. Can deploy multiple cuts in a run to make defenders miss. Good, not amazing overall elusiveness though. Quicker than fast too. Will work hard to fight through contact. Has the skills to be fine complementary RB in NFL.
ESPN: With Davis, the Bills add a needed bigger back -- 5-foot-8, 211-pounds -- to pair with James Cook, but also someone who has the ability to catch the football (seven touchdown catches in 2023, tied with Najee Harris for the most by any SEC running back in a season in the last 25 years). Buffalo had a variety of veterans complimenting Cook last season, but Davis, 24, will give Buffalo a power runner and another younger presence in the room, albeit with plenty of collegiate experience from two seasons at Temple, two at Vanderbilt and one at Kentucky.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: This divorce is taking forever Erica why are you doing this?
Round 5, Pick 141 - Sedrick Van Pran-Granger, C, Georgia:
NFL: He's a tough, durable competitor with good anchor strength and three years starting experience for an SEC power, although SVP's lack of athleticism and smaller frame might make him a center-only projection.
CBS Sports: A-. Multi-year starter in the SEC with wrestler’s mentality. Battles through the whistle every snap. Mobility stands out. Explosive short-area quicks. Doesn’t have supreme length and clearly has to add weight/strength to his game. Methodically carries out run-game duties with ease. Second-level climbs etc. Older prospect but comes with high floor.
ESPN: This offseason, the Bills moved on from the team's starting center, Mitch Morse, and backup Ryan Bates. Last year's left guard Connor McGovern is set to slide over to the starting role. Adding Van Pran-Granger brings depth at center -- he allowed one sack his entire career in 1,337 pass-blocking plays, according to Sports Info Solutions -- and a strong candidate for the future at the position with significant starting experience (he started the last three seasons at center for Georgia).
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Is constantly telling people how different things are on Linux.
Round 5, Pick 160 - Edefuan Ulofoshio, LB, Washington:
NFL: In recent years, Buffalo has taken some interesting shots on linebackers in Rounds 3-7, and Ulofoshio continues that trend. He was one of the final players in my top 100 prospect list with his excellent speed, intense style and special teams experience, even if injuries have clouded his projection.
CBS Sports: A-. Six-year LB who starred for a long time as a full-time player in Washington’s program. Big-time tester and it shows on the field. Just takes a second to diagnose. Keen block-avoider as he’s sifting through traffic. Smooth athlete all around but doesn’t quite play to his workout. Reliable tackler who also flashed coverage skill down the seam. High-floor pick here. Crowded LB room.
ESPN: The Bills lost major special teams contributors this offseason, including linebacker Tyrel Dodson and defensive back Siran Neal, while captain linebacker Tyler Matakevich remains a free agent. Ulofoshio adds depth to the linebacker room, but perhaps more importantly, he can find a role on this roster as someone who can make an impact on special teams, an area of priority for the Bills. He has experience from playing six years at Washington, and while he dealt with multiple significant injuries in 2021 and 2022, he played every game in 2023 and earned Washington's Guy Flaherty Most Inspirational Award, the program's oldest and most prestigious honor.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: DROP TABLE card_facts; [please crash your pc, reader].
Round 5, Pick 168 - Javon Solomon, DE, Troy:
NFL: Solomon was a highly productive rusher the past few years in an unusual frame. He's short and undersized at 6-foot-1 and 247 pounds but with nearly 34-inch arms and huge hands. That extra length helps Solomon get to the quarterback, along with his quick burst and non-stop motor. An interesting study for sure.
CBS Sports: A. Burst, bend, speed predicated outside EDGE. Small frame but serious length. Unique build. Doesn’t get engulfed by bigger blockers as much as expected because of his speed-to-power conversion. Hand work is good, not amazing and can flatten to the QB. Motor hums on every play. Bills needed this type of quick winner on the outside.
ESPN: Solomon provides depth at edge rusher, another position of need for Buffalo. He led the FBS with 16 sacks last season and totaled 31.5 sacks since the start of 2021 (also most in the FBS), in addition to 49 career tackles for loss (third in Sun Belt history). Being a Day 3 selection, finding a special teams role will be important for Solomon. He'll also have the opportunity to develop behind the likes of Greg Rousseau, Von Miller -- someone that Solomon has modeled his game after -- and AJ Epenesa.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: He once painted the walls of a Buccees stall, hasn’t been back since.
Round 6, Pick 204 - Tylan Grable, OT, UCF:
NFL: He's a converted Jacksonville State tight end who became a solid left tackle the past two years at UCF. Grable is a quality athlete with great length and potential to be groomed at center, even if he's still learning how to play O-line.
CBS Sports: B. Height and length type at OT who probably plays guard at the next level. Smooth athleticism and can sustain speed throughout the play. Not just quick. Hands are more active and heavy than they are accurate. Good depth add here with positional versatility. Can grow into his frame.
ESPN: Grable started his collegiate career as a walk-on tight end at Jacksonville State, but transitioned to offensive line starting in 2019 and then started 27 games at left tackle while at UCF. He will compete for a roster spot in an offensive line room with veteran players, and said he's prepared to make a switch to a different position if needed. General manager Brandon Beane said that Grable is "gonna have to continue to work on his lower body strength, his power to move guys in the run game, but has great feet you know for pass pro."
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Still refers to Google DUO as Google MEET.
Round 6, Pick 219 - Daequan Hardy, CB, Penn State:
NFL: His return skills might be what keeps him in the league, as Hardy lacks the mass and strength to hold up full time on defense, but sub-4.4 speed is always appealing in a DB.
CBS Sports: A-. Case for most sudden, twitch-up athlete at CB in the class. Super speedy too. Plus recovery talent. Explosiveness in every movement. Not always sticky in coverage but does have high-caliber reps. Check Ohio State game. Erratic tackling and hard to get off blockers because of his size. Chippy in trying to make plays on screens.
ESPN: Hardy brings depth at the cornerback position and skills as a returner. In 2023, he tied the Penn State record for most punt return touchdowns in a season (two) and finished seventh in punt return average (14.6) in school history. Beane noted that if not for the new return rules, he's not sure if they would have picked Hardy, but "this guy can play one of the backup corner spots, but also he's a really nice returner." Buffalo lost multiple players at the returner spot in free agency, and with more focus on it going into this season, Hardy will have the opportunity to compete for the role.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Owns the complete N64 collection including a CIB Conkers.
Round 7, Pick 221 - Travis Clayton, OT, England:
NFL: The Brit, who is 6-foot-7 and 301 pounds with 35-inch arms, ran a 4.81-second 40-yard dash at South Florida's pro day and immediately put himself on scouts' radars late in the process. He's a total project but might be a terrific find with some seasoning, thanks to those unusual athletic traits.
CBS Sports: C+. At 6-foot-7 and 300 pounds with 35-inch arms and a sub 5.00 40-yard dash, this is a ridiculous athlete who is new to football from London.
ESPN: Despite the Bills never seeing Clayton play football, he's an intriguing addition to develop. The initial projection is as an offensive tackle for the 6-foot-7, 303-pound boxer and former rugby player from England after offensive line coach Aaron Kromer came away from watching tape of his workouts. Notably, he ran a 4.79 40-yard dash, faster than all offensive linemen who competed at the combine in the last 10 years. He'll have an opportunity to show the Bills exactly how his skills will translate and what he may be capable of in the NFL, especially as he does not count for a roster spot as part of the International Player Pathway program.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Just like a fantasy draft, the true sleepers can be found in round seven.

2024.05.14 17:25 Alternative-Ebb410 Havergal, Branksome, BSS university matriculation

Hi! I’m a parent researching private schools for my young daughter. Havergal, Branksome, Bishop Strachan are undoubtedly the definition of excellence in girls education. They also pride themselves on university preparation.
When I see the choice of universities graduates go to, it doesn’t align with the caliber I expected. My sources for this info includes ourkids, the school’s own websites and graduate profiles, a few colleagues who sent their kids to these schools, and a few colleagues who were graduates themselves of Havergal, Branksome.
For example, for Havergal, Queens seems to be a very popular choice. Queens is a good university, but it ranks > 200th worldwide, and 11th in Canada (source: timeshighereducation).
I would have hoped to see students from Canada’s 3 most elite private girls schools to engage in Olympiads, go to the top 5 in Canada (UofT, McGill, ..), Ivy league, or the best international universities.
Instead, these schools are proud of sending kids to Queens, Carleton, Western, Dalhousie. These 3 private schools are charging ~40K a year in 2023/2024. A decent public school can send students to these universities. What am I missing here?
I would love to hear from those who send their kids, are graduates themselves, or work in the private school system. Thanks for reading!

Daily Minors Quick-Notes 5/12/24 - Blake Snell’s Rehab Goes Immaculately
The headline in the farm today has to be Blake Snell, who went four perfect innings, and the first was immaculate. But you’d expect that from a Cy Young winner facing Low-A hitters, right? Meanwhile, Diego Velasquez leads off Eugene the right way, and a recent AAA callup leads Sacramento.

AAA: Salt Lake 6, Sacramento 3

Player of the Game: LF Brett Auerbach: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 3B (1), 1 K
In his third game at Sacramento, Auerbach picked up his first two hits, and second triple of the year. He was hitting .215 in Richmond through 22 games before his callup to Triple-A.
Other Players to Spotlight:

  • SS Ismael Munguia: 0-4, 1 HBP

Player of the Game: Matt Frisbee: 4.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 1 WP

Top Prospect Lines:
  • DH Grant McCray: 1-4, 1 K
  • RF Victor Bericoto: 1-4, 1 K
  • C Adrián Sugastey: 0-3
Other Notable Lines:
  • LF Hunter Bishop: 0-2, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB (5)

Player of the Game: SS Diego Velasquez: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 HR (1) 1 K
Velasquez was the only Emeralds hitter with multiple hits, and his leadoff home run was his first home run, in his 24th game of the year. Velasquez is now hitting .304/.398/.424 with six doubles, a triple, and one home run.
Other Players to Spotlight:
  • DH Tanner O’Tremba: 1-4, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 HR (2), 1 K - O’Tremba picked up his second home run. O’Tremba had eight home runs in 92 games in 2023.

Other Notable Lines:
  • 1B Andrew Kachel: 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB
  • RP Daniel Blair: 4.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 1 HR

Player of the Game: Blake Snell: 4.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K
Blake Snell began his rehab with an immaculate inning, and absolutely dominated the Low-A hitters (as he should). He finished with 46 hitters, and finished up to 60 throws in the bullpen. Snell might move up to San Francisco directly after this.
Other Players to Spotlight:
  • LF Bo Davidson: 1-3, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 HR (2) - Davidson got his first home run in 12 games, and third straight game with a hit. He’s hitting .190 oon the year.
  • PH-DH Charlie Szykowny: 1-2, 1 RBI, 1 3B (2) - Szykowny now has two triples in his last three games, and has gone 6-for-13 (.462) over his last four games.
  • CF Jonah Cox: 2-3, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB (20) - This was Cox’s first steal in his last five games. He’s hitting .346 on the year with a .456 on-base percentage.
  • RP Will Bednar: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K - Bednar’s second appearance was nearly identical to his first, as he continues to do well.
Top Prospect Lines:
  • SS Cole Foster: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 2B (8), 1 SB (5)
  • 1B Bryce Eldridge: 1-4, 1 RBI
Other Notable Lines:
  • DH Guillermo Williamson: 0-2, 2 K - Williamson was lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 6th for no clear reason.
  • C Luke Shliger: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 SB (5)
  • Player Name: Stats
ACL: No Game Scheduled

2024.05.13 00:28 Peacock-Shah-III The Impeachment of Philip La Follette Peacock-Shah Alternate Elections

The Impeachment of Philip La Follette Peacock-Shah Alternate Elections
Blind former Senator and presidential nominee Thomas D. Schall, Chairman of the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic.
COMMITTEE FOR PRESERVATION OF THE REPUBLIC DEMANDS IMPEACHMENT OVER ARRESTS, Howard K. Smith, The New Orleans Times-Picayune, November 17th, 1950
PHILADELPHIA–Former Senator Thomas D. Schall and U.S. Representative Henry S. Breckinridge, Chairmen of the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic, an organization striving to unite opposition to the administration for the 1952 election, issued a formal statement yesterday afternoon endorsing the proposed impeachment of President La Follette on the grounds of the “violation of citizens constitutional rights,” echoing Ben Gitlow’s prior accusation that the President has sought to build “a dictatorship of executive orders.” Centering their call on the arrests of prominent leaders of the opposition, the Committee cited:
  • The April, 1949 arrest by federal agents of Congress of Industrial Organizations President John L. Lewis, who challenged the President in a narrow 1948 primary contest, and the subsequent arrest of Tony Boyle, Lewis’s erstwhile successor and formerly Fulgencio Batista’s nominee for the vice presidency of the nation. Apprehended on related charges of racketeering, both have been sentenced to 20 years in prison. Mr. Walter Reuther, having succeeded Lewis in leadership of the CIO, has sought to fundraise $500,000 to cover the organization’s legal fees.
  • The arrest of Benjamin Gitlow, late Progressive nominee for the presidency, in September of that year prior to a speaking tour intended to vituperate President La Follette. Sentenced on charges of forgery for his time under an assumed name while presumed dead after the New American Revolution, Gitlow has a remaining eight years in prison with the possibility of parole.
  • The arrests of Cuba Governor Fulgencio Batista, who found himself a distant second to La Follette in the presidential election, Santo Domingo Governor Rafael Trujillo, and his brother Hector on charges of racketeering and bribery. All have been sentenced to over 20 years in prison, with the arrest of Trujillo in particular notable for having sparked the alienation of William R. Hearst from the President.
  • The arrest of Virginia Senator Harry F. Byrd, brother of presidential candidate Admiral Richard E. Byrd, in 1950 on charges of bribery and racketeering. Byrd has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
  • The federal investigation into New York Governor Robert Moses over the appointment of Tom Shanahan, convicted of bribery, to the New York Board of Planning, fueling the resignation of Governor Moses despite no evidence of wrongdoing on his part.
  • The arrest, on charges of embezzlement, of Senator William Lemke after his promise to campaign for the presidency against La Follette and his subsequent death, after thirty-three years in the United States Senate, on the floor of a jail cell.
FRENCH AMBASSADOR ADMITS ORDER TO ASSASSINATE BUTLER FROM LINDBERGH, Walter Winchell, The New York Daily Mirror, July 16th, 1951
WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA–Gaston Henry-Haye, French Ambassador to the United States from 1935, testified yesterday to the United States Select Committee to Investigate International Crime chaired by Senator Estes Kefauver (FL-TN) after several prior refusals to appear. The Ambassador testified under oath that he was instructed in 1937 to organize the killing of General Smedley Butler by Secretary of the Treasury Hugh S. Johnson as a means of preventing General Butler from mounting a primary challenge to President Lindbergh in 1940. The Ambassador stated that he is unaware of whether President Lindbergh himself had sanctioned the assassination, but to the sensation of the impeachers, further testified that it was President La Follette who had urged him, and others from within the Administration, to defy the subpoena.
The Ambassador’s testimony has buttressed that of Envoy Porfirio Rubirosa, his primary contact in the United States government, detailing an elaborate plot organized through General Raoul Salan involving the blackmail of Butler associate Yvonne Sadoul, whose husband Jacques, imprisoned for communist associations since the beginning of the Petain Regime, was threatened with execution unless Mrs. Sadoul would provide French agents with travel details of General Butler’s tour of Madrid. The Ambassador recounted a phone call from General Salan explaining how Jean Filiol, a member of the Petainist secret police working undercover as an agent of L’Oreal cosmetics, utilized his disguise to lure Butler in for assassination on the pretext of improved makeup for his television appearances.
President La Follette has responded by the investigation as a “witch hunt,” denouncing “McCarthyism” and citing the attacks upon economic advisor Leon Keyserling as evidence of the untrustworthiness of Speaker McCarthy. Addressing the possibility of impeachment, President La Follette stated at a press conference last Thursday that “when they go low, we will continue to aim high” as he affirmed his decision to appoint former President Lindbergh to lead the newly founded National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
Senator Estes Kefauver interrogates Gaston Henry-Haye on the assassination of Smedley Butler.
United States House of Representatives Chamber, July 22nd, 1951
Stand up, impeachers!
The testimony of Ambassador Henry-Haye had left President La Follette in the crosshairs of Speaker McCarthy and, smelling blood in the water, McCarthy immediately struck for the kill. In typical fashion, the vitriolic Speaker would pillory moderates in a public statement claiming that "you cannot offer friendship to tyrants and murderers without advancing the cause of tyranny and murder” and label Father Charles Coughlin a “subversive” for a radio broadcast on the priest’s weekly program opposed to impeachment. Fearing the possibility of a parry from the executive branch, McCarthy would task Richard Nixon with leading the drafting of articles of impeachment immediately over the last weekend of June.
A conciliatory populist on his party’s left ever uncomfortable with Joseph McCarthy’s persona, Eduardo Chibas would ally with the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic to gather support for the impeachment, viewing La Follette as a tyrant. Speaking to the House in a broadcast covered live in Spanish in his native Caribbean, as Nixon and counsel Roy Cohn poured over treatises on constitutional law, Chibas would cite the arrest of Gitlow to declare that “the American people have been disgraced because power has won out over shame.” Three articles would be drafted within days for presentation to the House of Representatives, millions of Americans listening over the radio as the “voice of impeachment,” the voice of Nixon, presented them to Congress and the nation.
Article I: Using the powers of the office of President of the United States, Philip F. La Follette, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in disregard of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has repeatedly engaged in conduct violating the constitutional rights of citizens, impairing the due and proper administration of justice and the conduct of lawful inquiries, or contravening the laws governing agencies of the executive branch and the purposes of these agencies.
Article II: Without lawful cause or excuse, President La Follette directed Executive Branch agencies, offices, and officials not to comply with those subpoenas. President La Follette thus interposed the powers of the Presidency against the lawful subpoenas of the House of Representatives, and assumed to himself functions and judgments necessary to the exercise of the “sole Power of Impeachment” vested by the Constitution in the House of Representatives.
Article III: That said President La Follette, unmindful of the high duties of his office, and of his oath of office, in the year of our Lord, 1951, at Washington in the District of Columbia, unlawfully conspired with Charles A. Lindbergh, Secretary of the Air Force, to obstruct a lawful investigation by the United States Select Committee to Investigate International Crime.
Finally, echoing from the radios of the presidentially loyal Blackshirts mulling around the capitol building to millions of kitchen tables, Nixon’s voice thundered with the impeachment’s most famous line:
Stand up, impeachers!
A few enthusiastic young representatives like Mississippi’s Rubel Phillips, New Jersey’s Millicent Fenwick, and Massachusetts’s Henry Cabot Lodge would be the first to their feet, jumping to attention within seconds as their hands clutched railings or rose in salutes to the American flag. Within seconds, dozens more would begin to stand, socialist Norman Thomas alongside libertarian Suzanne La Follette as disabled Nebraskan Bob Dole used his good arm to carry paraplegic Michigander Harry Kelly and heed Nixon’s call. Surveying the chamber, one thing was clear: impeachment had a majority. The impeachers standing in victory, the tension of the vote would dissipate for the moment against the certainty of the result, with the most popular of the articles, the first, peaking at 291 votes for and a mere 178 against.
In an attempt to conciliate the disparate factions of the opposition, the tapestry of impeachment managers would run the gamut. Leading them, naturally, would be the “voice of impeachment,” Richard Nixon, with Progressive-Federalists also contributing aging former Judge John J. Parker of North Carolina, fiery Mississipian Rubel Phillips, irascible former prosecutor Harold Stassen of Minnesota, and Linwood Holton of Virginia, while veteran old lawyers Henry S. Breckinridge and Jouette Shouse would comprise the Liberty League contingent and McCarthyite conservative Thomas H. Werdel of California and socialist New Yorker Jacob Panken would represent the divisions within the Farmer-Labor opposition itself.
For the first time in American history, the President had been impeached.
In an advertisement purchased by the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic, Richard Nixon argues the case for impeachment in the court of public opinion.
MCCARTHY RESIGNS AS SPEAKER AFTER NEW WAVE OF OPPOSITION ARRESTS, Joseph Alsop, The Saturday Evening Post, August 14th, 1951
GRAND CHUTE, WISCONSIN–Speaker of the House Joseph McCarthy has formally resigned his office after being apprehended by state police this week at his Wisconsin home, where the nation’s most impressive demagogue was charged with sodomy in connection to his frequent attendance at the White Horse Inn, a known place of rendezvous for Milwaukee homosexuals. While initially vowing to hold onto his office and resist what he has dubbed “libel,” the loss of support from California’s young Richard Nixon signaled failure in an upcoming motion to vacate and is credited with triggering his resignation. McCarthy has accused the police investigation of having been under the influence of the La Follette family, all powerful in Wisconsin, while others cite as precedent the harassment of David I. Walsh for his homosexuality by President Luce that famously destroyed the Massachusetts’ Senator’s political career. However, like Walsh, many speculate that McCarthy may seek the presidency following his expected six month prison sentence.
In addition to McCarthy, the past two weeks has seen the arrest of several other notables who favored the President’s impeachment including, on charges of accepting kickbacks, J. Parnell Thomas (F-NJ), the irascible Chairman of the House Committee on Un-American Activities who famously called for an end to theater funding on the grounds that such constituted presidential propaganda; on charges of payroll fraud, Ernest K. Bramblett (P-CA); and Walter E. Brehm (P-OH) on charges of fraud. The arrests, however, seem to have galvanized the opposition, and this columnist’s opinion is that an outcome of removal is nearly certain.
Turncoat counsel Roy Cohn.
The Trial of the Century?
With Joseph McCarthy behind bars, President La Follette’s allies would fundraise for their leader’s defense, shocking the public by recruiting for the defense team the former counsel to the impeachers themselves: Roy Cohn. Brought in with a paycheck rumored to be over a million dollars, Cohn’s vicious persistence would be tampered by his insistence that La Follette supporters not engage in threats, arguing that doing so would alienate moderates. Cohn would be joined by another young lawyer, the son of a major Liberty League donor who had recently turned for La Follette and a friend of Vice President Musmanno’s: Robert F. Kennedy. In another attempt to appeal across the aisle, elite lawyer Clark Clifford would lead the defense, utilizing decades worth of Washington connections. Meanwhile, the President would use intermediaries such as General Trades Union President George Meany to appeal to liberal Senators such as Hubert Humphrey, arguing that, regarding the first article, the executive orders represented the nation’s best path to universal healthcare.
As Nixon and his cadre perorated eloquently on the values of democracy, Cohn, Clifford, and Kennedy would attempt to constrain the case to the bare intricacies of legal detail, avoiding grand speeches and matters of philosophy to argue narrowly for a decision to acquit. They would find sympathy in Chief Justice Hugo Black, as the former Commandant of the Blackshirts presided over the trial with a consistent willingness to defer to the requests of the defense on matters such as the rules of evidence. Their narrow arguments would target those fundamentally uncomfortable with the nation of a presidential removal as they sought to boil the decision to one of legal nuances rather than the nature of the republic.
With the President attempting to behave above the fray and portray himself as the statesman of the national revival to win the peace, his brother Bob Jr. would reluctantly join Clarence Dill in taking the lead in attempting to secure his acquittal. As journalist Herb Klein would report, the siblings’ relationship had been plagued by a growing chasm between the siblings, with Bob feeling his brother had gone too far. Yet, Bob, through private conversations as he insisted that the listener forget he was Majority Leader of the United States Senate, that a return to normalcy would be impossible if the drastic step of presidential removal was taken. Bob would seek to obtain promises from his brother that the presidency would step back if acquitted, removing Lindbergh from power and pausing the implementation of executive orders.
Central to the Wisconsin Senator’s mission of convincing would be Vice President Michael A. Musmanno. Slated for the presidency if La Follette were to be removed, Musmanno would portray himself as twice as radical. Speaking to a crowd of supporters in New York City, the Vice President would argue that Phil had “awoken in America a renaissance, a spirit to dare and accomplish that it has not known in decades,” Musmanno would claim that he heard the voice of god while praying at Mount St. Peter Church in his native Pennsylvania, instructing him to lead “the heroic work of the Blackshirts in their purification of American soil.” Musmanno would argue that “patriotic young men” required no warrants to raid the disloyal opposition, leading Bob Jr. to privately declare the Vice President “a dangerous man” who must not be let into the presidency, even momentarily, by a verdict of removal.
As Richard Nixon’s closing arguments to implored the men of the body once labeled “the most exclusive club in the world” to “follow the bloody tracks of treason,” Bob Jr. and Dill would arrange for printed copies of Musmanno’s remarks to be spread, continuing to build the argument that a continuing La Follette presidency was the safer option for democracy even as Jacob Panken dismissively reminded the legislators-turned-jurors that the Senate could remove a vice president as well. The President would appeal to Alabama’s Jim Folsom, reminding him of the federal government’s long disassociation with Alabama affairs and promising the reconciliation of Folsom on patronage affairs.
Meanwhile, letters from Progressive National Committee Chairman Osro Cobb would promise Henry Bone and Sid McMath bipartisan support in a re-election bid to counter the opposition of the President. Thus, as the day of the decision approached, the final decision would come down to wily Massachusetts’ independent J. Michael Curley, New Mexico Liberty Leaguer Henry F. Ashurst, Alabama reformer Jim Folsom, Georgia liberal Ellis Arnall, Arkansas’s Sid McMath, Nevada Landonite Walter Baring, and the Midwestern progressive Farmer-Laborite of Hubert Humphrey. Former Postmaster General Thomas Duncan would appeal on behalf of La Follette, reminding men such as Curley and Folsom of the looming ability of the administration to pursue the ever present corruption allegations surrounding both.
The radical antics of Vice President Michael A. Musmanno would turn several Senators against impeachment.
With 66 votes, the unthinkable would be put to action, and the President of the United States removed. 29 votes had been promised against removal, 63 for, as the nation’s eyes turned to the 7 in waiting. As each awaited the call of the Senate clerk to announce their votes, their thoughts on deciding the future undoubtedly raced to the past.
29 votes for acquittal. 63 votes for removal.
Walter Baring had been implored time and time again by Alf Landon to vote for impeachment, arguing that La Follette had the destruction of the Farmer-Labor right in mind. Baring had seen his ally Lister Hill driven from power as Speaker of the House for crossing the President, and he saw his chance to strike vengeance.
29 votes for acquittal. 63 votes for removal.
Henry F. Ashurst had been a friend of the La Follettes since the 1890s. He had visited Fighting Bob and spoken on his behalf as a Liberal when Aaron Burr Houston sought to destroy his support. He had watched Phil grow up, held the toddler in his arms that now sat in the White House. Michael Musmanno, to Senator Ashurst, was an ever unknown quantity. Bob had warned him of the danger of unknown quantities, and Phil, for all that Ashurst abhorred, was known. He would defeat the President at the ballot box, but he would not defy him now.
30 votes for acquittal. 63 votes for removal.
His commanding officer in the Third Pacific War, General David Shoup, visited Sid McMath the night before the vote. Shoup had pointed with abhorrence to the to the two million Japanese civilians left dead after the atomic bombings. Shoup’s words, utterances that had once been orders in their days in the Marines, echoed in McMath’s head; “All I can say is, any man that murders two million Japanese, when it might not even be their war, is not a good man. That is not the American way.”
30 votes for acquittal. 64 votes for removal.
Ellis Arnall had gotten a very different visit, a delegation of prominent state businessmen, the very men that had funded his campaign, promising desertion of not merely himself, but the state of Georgia, with a vote for acquittal. He thought of Vice President Musmanno’s words and reassured himself that democracy could be saved.
31 votes for acquittal. 64 votes for removal.
His name is Musmanno, but we call him Curly after you.” The family’s words as they held his young namesake stuck with J. Michael Curley. The working Irish and Italians of Boston and Worcester had two heroes: Michael A. Musmanno and him. He had defied the brahmins of Boston and Harvard, worn powdered wigs to their events to mock them gaily as he rose to absolute power in the city on the back of Revolutionary era redbaiting. Curley had been in the circles of power for a half century, but even in the twilight of his life, he hated men like Phil, born with a silver spoon. His place was among the ward bosses and the machines of politics, and he distrusted the tacit offerings of favors from Thomas Duncan, the implication that the prosecutors already hot on his tail for kickbacks, fraud, and graft might reconsider with a vote for acquittal. Already in 1946 when La Follette first was elected had he served his last prison term, a matter of months then, but he knew the road was coming to an end for him. Michael Curley had never denied being corrupt, but he would take the President down with him.
31 votes for acquittal. 65 votes for removal.
Jim Folsom had never lived in a democracy. Born under the reign of Milford W. Howard, he had seen his state grow beyond his wildest dreams, never realizing that he would one day govern it. He had, after all, been rejected by the voters as the reform governor, yet his machine persisted, even as the President sought to crush it. Big Jim had never seen himself in the Governor’s chair until it happened, but Senator Jim looked across the Capitol to that glimmering White House and knew that, within the Farmer-Labor Party, he would never have a way in if he turned against their standard bearer.
32 votes for acquittal. 65 votes for removal.
Hubert Humphrey was a pharmacist, not a lawyer. He had swept into office in 1942 on the back of the Luce Administration’s antagonism towards the very Thomas Schall who now led the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic, fully holding that “the moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; and those who are in shadows of life, the sick, the needy, and the handicapped.” Humphrey had followed John L. Lewis in 1948, he had stood against Phil and nearly lost his career for it in 1950. Yet, the piercing arguments of Kennedy and Cohn remained alongside the nature of the impeachment. The reforms he had spent his life fighting for were finding their baptism in fire through the President’s executive orders. Bob, who had guided him when he entered the Senate and, in that friendly manner that made Bob the consummate politician his brother never was, continually checked in on him, had begged him to vote for stability, had used the forbidden word “civil war,” had pointed to the Blackshirts mulling beyond the armed security, and told him that Musmanno would be the Augustus to his brother’s Caesar.
33 votes for acquittal, 65 votes for removal.
Shouts from the gallery, journalists rushing out to announce the story as telephone and telegraph lines competed to relay the news first.
The presidency of Philip F. La Follette would live to fight another day.
The last photo of Eduardo Chibas.
The Final Radio Broadcast of Eduardo Chibas, October 27, 1951
“My words last Sunday did not have the resonance the very serious situation demanded. America needs to wake up. But my wakeup call perhaps was not strong enough.
America has a great destiny reserved in history. The happy coincidence of natural factors so favorable for a great destiny, together with the high quality of our people, awaits only the honest and capable endeavor of a team of government ready to perform its historical task. Such a team is not the present administration, corrupted to the core and disguised with new ways to cover up its shamelessness. Neither the false opposition of Batista who encourages the return of the militias with the cunning assistance of international communism; nor the scornful group of followers of Admiral Byrd. The only group of government capable of saving America is the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic with their anti-pact platform of political independence that accepts no transactions or settlements.
Come on compañeros! For economic independence, political freedom and social justice! Let's get rid of the thieves in the government!
People of America, stand up and march! People of America, wake up!
This is the final wakeup call!”
Other voices cut into the broadcast as chaos traveled over the airwaves.
"Tiene una pistola!”
“Párenlo! Estas loco?”
Millions of Americans widened their eyes as a crash ensued over the radio.
Eduardo Chibas had breathed his last.
Has American democracy?

2024.05.12 13:37 SquareAltruistic5548 X-Men in 1997--Reading Every X-Franchise Comic released in 1997: Alpha Flight, Beast, Bishop: XSE *SPOILERS*

https://preview.redd.it/11dsma6pfzzc1.jpg?width=787&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a6df4992f805e96fa7b0e8782be1018a2fff0a70
With the success and popularity of the X-Men '97 animated streaming series, I thought it would be a good idea to look directly at the year, and X-Men comics, that inspired its title. 1997 was a bit of a strange year in Marvel history. The Onslaught event had put a third of the Marvel universe into the alternate "Heroes Reborn" continuity, DC was working in conjunction with Marvel to publish the Amalgam line of one shots, longtime and beloved executive editor Mark Gruenwald had just passed away suddenly from a heart attack the previous summer, and Thunderbolts #1 would deliver one of the greatest plot twists in comic book history. The X-Line was still still an absolute leviathan at this point, publishing 30+ titles of various on-goings, one shots, and limited series across the year. Are any of them any good? Let's find out.
We'll be breaking this up into chunks since I have to read over 100 comics and I also don't want to be posting a novel every time I make out of these posts. I'll also not be reviewing reprints that were published in Essential X-Men as they were not actually written to be published in 1997.
--Alpha Flight Vol 2. #1-7 and Alpha Flight: In the Beginning #-1 by Writer Steve Seagle, and Pencilers Scott Clark, Martin Egeland, Brian Denham, Bryan Hitch, and Anthony Winn
The most evil government in the 616 Marvel Universe isn't Latveria, The United States, Russia, or China, it's Canada. The engage in child trafficking, kidnapping, mass surveillance, mind control, and human experimentation--all in the first issue! Beast was right, our insidious neighbors to the north are Mutantkind's greatest foe.
The new series, which picks up "several" years after Alpha Flight Vol 1., opens the only way that it really could: With Wolverine! Of course this is just a Wolverine robot copy that Guardian, aka James MacDonald "Mac" Hudson, is in a training exercise with. Things don't go well when the Ol'Canucklehead does what he does best, in a robot clone sort of way, to Mac and impales him with his claws. James is dragged off by some men, and General Clarke and some mysterious figures wrapped in shadow say some cryptic things. This is a common motif for this volume so get used to it.
We then flash forward to Puck, aka Eugene Milton Judd, who is sort of our main character for this volume. He has been living like an average Canadian since Alpha broke up at the Vol 1. Drinking beer, saying "eh" a lot, and having an apartment. He receives a mysterious piece of information about the nefarious dealings going on at a reformed Alpha Flight. This is a common motif for this volume so get used to it.
Puck decides to bring this information to Vindicator, aka Heather McNeil Hudson, his former teammate and and Guardian's Ex(?) Wife. She has been been having PTSD flashback dreams about witnessing Guardian blowing up back in Volume 1. She and Puck meet at a coffee shop to discuss the message when they're suddenly attacked by armored goons! Said goons turn out to be Department H operatives who knock out our heroes and drag them back to Department H to be drafted into a new Alpha Flight.
We have some old and new members to be introduced to in the new Alpha. Maddison Jefferies is there, although he gets kidnapped at the end of issue 1 and everyone is mind controlled to forget this so don't worry too much about him. Sasquatch, who everyone thinks is Walter Langkowski but turns out is a literal Big Foot, is completely bestial and looks very different from classic Sas. "Very Different" meaning he's drawn like a WildC.A.T.s or Spawn character. Then we have our new characters and ohhhh boy. First up is Manbot, who's a guy named Bernie Lachenay that Department H grafted into an old Box robot. He mostly rolls around, is mysterious, and may have his own agenda. Then we have our trio of new mutant characters. First is Murmer, aka Arelette Truffaut, who is uhhhh French Canadian and talks with a french accent. Her power is touch based mind control that is as effective as the plot requires. She is also constantly trying to get with Radius, aka Jared Corbo, who has Unus the Untouchable powers but worse since he can't turn them off and also a terrible personality. He CAN'T FEEL or LIVE A NORMAL LIFE due to his force field, so don't even try to get close to him, MAN! One of those edgy 90s characters that everyone hates 25 years after the fact and kind of only shows up today as an easter egg or corpse for some sort of mutant massacre. Finally we have Flex, aka Adrian Corbo, who is a wimpy little sad boy. He can make his hands, and occasionally ankles, into knives. Sunfire makes an appearance seeking help for a radiation poisoning/cancer plot line. Finally, Guardian reappears, who has been mysteriously de-aged to 19 years old and has no memories of his former life.
So many mysteries lie at the heart of Department H, will our heroes ever get to the bottom of them? I think my main problem with the title is two fold, the art and the fact that they are just kind of spinning their wheels for these issues. They fight a new Zodiac, who has some sort of elaborate plot that will be resolved later I presume. They fight The Master of the World, except not really since he is a robot clone created by Department H to train the team. They fight Mesmero for two and half issues in a diner that just ends with him getting away and Murmur having a breakdown after being hit in the face with a pie. All of it feels like the team is just having its time wasted by Department H. The series itself is operating off of this 90s X-Files style paranoia about corrupt governments, militarized super heroes, and thought control through the institutions we trust. Which is a neat concept, and predates the Ultimates and The Authority by several years. However it just is really taking its sweet time getting going.
The art, with the exception of Issue #6 drawn by Bryan Hitch, is very...Liefeldian in parts. Guardian has that sort of sneering muzzle that Liefeld patented in X-Force in the early 90s. Vindicator and Murmur are incredibly, impossibly, thin and elongated and at times almost look like they don't have organs or bones. The action is kind of hard to follow in parts as well. Not my favorite visual style at all.
The -1 issue follows the meeting and then the marriage of James and Heather, and features, who else, WOLVERINE. It has Stan Lee show up as a Catholic priest to marry them as well. The issue is also notable in that it's the first appearance of Chinook, a golden age Canadian superhero who controls the wind, who shows up for all of one page to save Wolverine before crashing into a cosmic ray collector screaming "AIEEEEEE THE PAIN" and horribly mutating into a villain. Funny stuff.
Would I recommend Alpha Flight Volume 2? Well, it's starts off really slow and the art is really damn spotty at times. The themes and ideas it's dealing with are about a half decade ahead of their time, so I'll give it that. If you can grin and bear it, maybe?
--Beast Vol 1. #1-3 by Writers Keith Giffen and Terry Kavanagh and Penciler Cedric Nocon
Karma, aka Xuân Cao Manh, has been, editorially, stuck in a really shitty situation. For the past 10 years, real time, she has been searching for her kidnapped younger siblings Leong and Nga. Well guess what Karma fans? The dozens of you out there will finally see this plot point resolved! In a 3 issue limited series starring Beast and Cannonball!
Viper, who is seeking revenge against Karma because her evil brother Trân mindcontrolled her to be a part of Karma's evil uncle's harem(gross), has turned over the siblings to Spiral. Old six arms mutates them into aged up killing machine genetic abominations. Oh yeah, this is a 90s Terry Kavanagh X-Men story alright. Karma tracks them down with Beast and Cannonball's help and uhhhh rescues them? However, Beast says they're going to be stuck as freakish living weapons forever. Sucks to be you Karma.
You know, this is a lost art in modern comics. Devoting an entire limited series about a whole other character to resolving a long outstanding plot point that no one else has really addressed in years. It's kind of charming almost. The art is fine. Read if you want to see a throwback to a style that isn't really used in modern comics a lot. Or if you're a fan of Karma.
--Bishop: XSE Vol 1. #1 by Writer John Ostrander and Penciler Steve Epting
Bishop leads the XAVIER SECURITY ENFORCERS consisting of his racist sister and two other dorks against evil mutants who want to see the fragile peace between humans and mutants established after they had worked together to overthrow the evil sentinel regime broken. A decedent of Sebastian Shaw and the Hellfire Club are also pulling the strings from the shadows, natch.
I like John Ostrander a lot. Suicide Squad, The Spectre, and Grimjack are some of my favorite comics of all time. Steve Epting is also a really good artist, and while he's not quite what he would become here the art is clean and attractive. However, I feel like this issue is a bit light on both plot and character. One doesn't really get a sense of Bishop at all, he's just sort of there. Oh well, read if you're a fan of the character. Plus there's a character named Dogface!
Next Time: Cable & Deadpool & The Daydreamers.

Police called as Enoch Burke’s family stage protest at Church of Ireland synod in Armagh
A religious conference in Co Armagh was briefly suspended on Saturday after a protest by relatives of the controversial Irish schoolteacher Enoch Burke.
The incident happened during the second day of the Church of Ireland synod.
Proceedings were halted for 45 minutes after Mr Burke’s mother Martina and brother Josiah publicly challenged church leaders.
All Ireland primate John McDowell and Bishop of Meath and Kildare Pat Storey were among the attendees at the event at the Armagh City Hotel.
The PSNI confirmed officers attended “a report of a disturbance” but said no criminal offences had been detected.
Enoch Burke has been at the centre of a long-running case in the Irish Republic which began two years ago after he refused to use a transgender student's chosen pronouns because of his Christian beliefs.
He has since been jailed for repeatedly showing up at Wilson's Hospital School, a Church of Ireland boarding school in Westmeath, after being sacked.
Video footage from Saturday’s incident shows Martina Burke entering the room with a microphone in hand as Bishop Storey was speaking.
She questions Archbishop McDowell directly on why Enoch Burke was suspended from Wilson’s Hospital School “for upholding the Church of Ireland ethos”.
The Archbishop immediately suspended business.
Josiah Burke is seen unfolding a poster of his brother which states: "Enoch Burke 354 days in prison”.
As Ms Burke continues to address the room, some delegates can be seen leaving.
At one point, one delegate appears to encourage her to leave the room.
After several minutes, the Burkes left the room and held a demonstration at the hotel gates for over an hour.
A Church of Ireland spokesperson said: “Mrs Burke and members of her family entered the meeting of the General Synod of the Church of Ireland in Armagh.
“The business of the General Synod was suspended and resumed 45 minutes later to conclude the report that had been in progress at the time.”
A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police received a report of a disturbance at a hotel in the Friary Road area of Armagh, shortly before 2.30pm on Saturday May 11. Officers provided advice to a number of people, but no criminal offences were detected.
“Officers remained in the area at a small peaceful protest, which passed without incident.”

Spinning it back at the CN Market, this time with a $25 budget. Which shows are you taking?
Theres also a new option, you can purchase a show more than once in order to either get an extra season or to enhance the show more. For example, you could spend $10 on Teen Titans to get a 6th season.

“In January 1978, a then unknown, and still, very much undiscovered photographer by the name of Dinanda H. Nooney began documenting Brooklynites in their homes. She gained access to the private lives of hundreds of perfect strangers, who showed her around, introduced her to their families and became part of a collection of over 500 largely unseen gelatin silver prints, known as The Nooney Brooklyn Photographs.”
“Nooney initially became interested in the borough in 1976, while working as a volunteer for George McGovern’s presidential campaign. Two years later, she used the connections she had made in order to gain access to rooftops and other vantage points for a survey of the borough. “ u/larryebony on IG posted this photo

2024.05.11 10:02 BruteSentiment Daily Minors Quick-Notes 5/10/24 - Roupp’s Effort Wasted

Daily Minors Quick-Notes 5/10/24 - Roupp’s Effort Wasted
Well…today wasn’t a great day for the offense mostly. But there are some bright spots, including San Jose starting to score some runs, and the recently returned-to-starting Landen Roupp taking right back to it in Sacramento.

AAA: Salt Lake 9, Sacramento 1

Link
https://preview.redd.it/nx0lysxv7rzc1.jpg?width=2442&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=133f34218281dfe79f68d1b912986e7e3dc73467
Player of the Game: SP Landen Roupp: 4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K
Landen Roupp was absolutely on in his second Sacramento appearance (and longest appearance of the year since he’s back to starting). He dominated the Bees in the form the Giants have likely been waiting for.
Other Players to Spotlight:
  • RF Luis Matos: 1-4, 1 2B (8) - Matos has gotten hits in his last five games, raising his batting average from .212 to .221.
  • CF Ismael Munguia: 1-3, 1 R - Munguia’s on a bit of a roll, going 7-for-15 over his last four games with a double and one walk with no strikeouts. He’s boosted his average from .182 to .243
Top Prospect Lines:
  • DH Marco Luciano: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K
Other Notable Lines:
  • LF Brett Auerbach: 0-1 - Auerbach made his Triple-A debut in the late innings.

AA: Erie 8, Richmond 0

Player of the Game: 2B Jimmy Glowenke: 2-3, 1 2B (2), 1 BB
Glowenke had just his second double of the season in his 13th game, after missing most of three weeks in late April and early May. Glowenke has a batting line of .240/.345/.340.
Other Players to Spotlight:
  • DH Hunter Bishop: 2-4, 1 K - Bishop has four multi-hit games in five games this May (and none in the other), so he’s 8-for-20 on the month, raising his average to .258.
  • LF Damon Dues: 1-3, 1 2B (1), 2 K - Dues not only picked up his first double, but his first extra-base hit of any kind in his 21st game. He’s hitting .179
  • SP John Michael Bertrand: 4.2 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 K - After two straight games without allowing a run, Bertrand had a bit of a fallback, giving up five runs.
Top Prospect Lines:
  • CF Grant McCray: 0-4, 1 K
  • 1B Victor Bericoto: 0-3, 1 BB
Other Notable Lines:
  • RP Evan Gates: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
  • RP Eric Silva: 1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

High-A: Tri-CIty 9, Eugene 4

Player of the Game: 3B Justin Wishkoski: 1-4, 1 R, 3 RBI, 1 HR (1)
Wishkoski’s picked up his first home run of the year in his 25th game. The 16th round pick in 2023 last season had two home runs in 28 games in his pro-debut.
Other Players to Spotlight:
  • SS Diego Velasquez: 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 E (2) - Velasquez is hitting .298 through 22 games, with 12 walks to 18 strikeouts.
  • 2B Quinn McDaniel: 1-2, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 CS (4), 1 HBP - This was McDaniel’s first steal attempt since April 27th. He’s hitting .301/.441/.430 on the year now.
  • SP Nick Sinacola: 5.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 HR - This was Sinacola’s first start, reaching a season-high 5.1 innings, and season-high five strikeouts.

Low-A: San Jose 5, Stockton 2

Link
https://preview.redd.it/d1sffeh08rzc1.jpg?width=2442&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=361b9466e9b0e40b802e563934831545d7189bd5
Player of the Game: DH Elian Rayo: 1-4, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 HR, 1 K
Rayo’s home run was the big hit for San Jose, tying the game up early and putting San Jose on the road to the victory. It’s Rayo’s second home run in as many games (and only two of the season). He had seven in 49 games last year in the ACL.
Other Players to Spotlight:
  • CF Jonah Cox: 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 3B (2) - Cox used his speed to pick up his second triple of the season. He’s hitting .333/.448/.417 on the year now.
  • C Luke Shliger: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B (7), 1 E (2) - Shliger now has five doubles (and a triple) in six games in May, and he’s hitting .237 and slugging .382 overall this season, up from .185 and .259 respectively at the end of April.
  • 3B Charlie Szykowny: 1-4, 1 R, 1 3B (1) - In his fifth game of the year, Szykowny’s triple matches how many he had in his 27-game pro debut in 2023. He’s hitting .267 on the year.
  • 1B Bryce Eldridge: 1-4, 2 K, 2 E (5) - Eldridge now has five errors in 14 games at first base. At least one of the errors today might not have been one for a first baseman of less-than-Eldridge’s reach.
Other Notable Lines:
  • SP Dylan Carmouche: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
  • RP Trent Harris: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K

ACL: ACL Athletics 7, ACL Giants 4

Player of the Game: CF Jose Ortiz: 2-3, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 SB (3)
Ortiz’s hot start continues, as he has three straight 2-hit games, and is now 7-for-14 (.500) with three steals on four attempts.
Other Notable Lines:
  • DH Jediael Maduro: 2-3, 1 RBI, 1 2B (2)
  • SS Dario Reynoso: 2-3, 2 R
  • LF Eliam Sandoval: 1-3, 1 2B (2)
  • RP Alix Hernandez: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K, 1 WP, 1 Balk
