Thursday, May 16 Good morning! A 1.2% gain for the S&P 500 sent it to a new record high as meme stock momentum faltered. S&P 5,308: The S&P 500 closed Wednesday at a record high of 5,308, its first time over the 5,300 mark. The Nasdaq and Dow also hit record highs, with the latter moving ever closer to 40,000, which would be its first time reaching a new 10,000-point increment since 2020. ‌ Welcome inflation news: April's Consumer Price Index report served as the stock market's main catalyst Wednesday as consumer prices rose less than expected and grew at the slowest pace in three months. Investors see this as a step in the right direction for the Fed's inflation fight and, taken with slowing retail sales, as a sign the central bank will not only cut rates in 2024 but potentially do so more than once. ‌
Walmart reports: The retail titan reports quarterly results Thursday and investors will be looking for confirmation of both the Commerce Department's flat sales numbers and the consumer slowdown Home Depot's quarterly report suggested. But with the retailer serving the dual role as retail bellwether and value-friendly trade-down option from more expensive stores, that confirmation may be tricky to find. ‌
Everyone is losing with car insurance: The biggest price jump seen in April's CPI report, by far, was in car insurance. Prices are up 22.6% over the past year — yet, perhaps counterintuitively, car insurance companies aren't gouging consumers. Instead, they're on their fourth consecutive year of considerable losses. ‌ GameStop and AMC in the red: GameStop and AMC finished Wednesday back in the red after a hot start to the week. AMC was able to raise $250 million, capitalizing on the meme stock moment, but GameStop's window is closing. One of the reasons? ‌ Wall Street’s biggest bull wishes he'd been even more bullish. But he's making up for it now. ‌ “It has become clear to us that we underestimated the strength of the market momentum,” Brian Belski, BMO Capital Markets chief investment strategist, wrote Wednesday morning in a note revising his 2024 year-end forecast to a Street high of 5,600. ‌ Buoyed by Wednesday's moderating inflation numbers, stocks closed at 5,308, making Belski's target 5.5% away. ‌ Underestimation is not what Belksi is known for. Last November, the strategist’s team had the high-water mark for 2024 predictions with 5,100, one of the few daring to go past the 5,000 mark. ‌ At the time the index stood at 4,550, over 5% off its January 2022 peak of 4,796. ‌ Belksi’s call proved to be prescient. ‌ And before the calendar flipped, Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, and Citi had joined BMO at 5,100, with Oppenheimer and Fundstrat taking pole position at 5,200. And as the S&P 500 blew past the entire Street’s predictions in March, multiple firms adjusted their forecasts. ‌ BMO didn’t, a move that — again — would seem prescient as the index dipped as low as 4,967 in April.
Wall Street’s biggest bull wishes he'd been a bigger bull “In late February we decided to draw a line in the sand with respect to our 2024 S&P 500 price target of 5,100 since we believed market performance had run a little too far, too fast,” Belski wrote, referencing the stock market’s rocket-like trajectory that ran well over 20% in just a few months after its October low. ‌ But this prudence was, in fact, a mistake, the strategist said. ‌ In the three months since, the stock market’s dip and recovery to a new all-time high (pick your index, they’re all peaking) was thanks in large part to an alignment in investor expectations and Fed guidance, which Wednesday's retail sales and CPI keeps in the right direction. ‌
“We are comfortable with this because we believe the market is behaving in a similar fashion to 2021 and 2023 — years where we did not give enough credit to the strength of market momentum, something we are trying to avoid this time around,” Belski added. ‌ BMO's team found that the first two years of this new bull market are lagging the average performance seen during the first two years of new bull runs. So, with little change in terms of fundamentals or general economic conditions, the revised forecast is underpinned by sentiment, expectations, and the more nebulous aspects of the stock market. ‌ Although BMO’s fresh forecast maps out a great destination for bulls, it does contain a notable warning about possible turbulence. ‌ “We are still skeptical that the 5.5% drawdown that occurred during March-April will be the worst for the S&P 500 this year given historical data that shows an average drawdown of 9.4% for the second year of bull markets historically,” Belski wrote. ‌ A 5,600 year-end with a bigger than 5.5% drop between now and then? ‌ That almost feels more bullish than a simple 5,600 target.
The S&P 500 hit a record high on Wednesday, closing above 5,300 for the first time ever as investors cheered softer inflation data and grew more optimistic about the prospect of Federal Reserve interest rate cuts this year. ‌ And while we've been highlighting a rotation in markets to areas like Utilities (XLU) during the latest leg of the rally, the S&P 500's first record since March didn't come without a rise in perhaps the most notable sub-sector of the market over the past year. ‌ The Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF (MAGS), launched in April 2023, tracks the "Magnificent Seven" stocks: Apple (AAPL), Alphabet (GOOGL, GOOG), Microsoft (MSFT), Amazon (AMZN), Meta (META), Tesla (TSLA), and Nvidia (NVDA). It's up about 5.6% in the past month, outpacing the S&P 500's 4.9% gain and now sitting at its own all-time high. ‌ As seen in the chart below, the Magnificent Seven's rise, coinciding with an increase in the broader market, has been a feature of the market rally over the past year. Chart of the day But what sticks out this time around is another shift in what's driving the Magnificent Seven trade. On Feb. 28, we wrote that Nvidia, Meta, and Amazon were leading, with the other four tech stocks slowly falling off. ‌ This has changed yet again in the past month. Nvidia is still a top gainer, adding 10% in the last month. But Alphabet has been the best performer in the group, gaining more than 11%, while Apple has added north of 10% as well. You know, it's like it picked up so quick after the scandal broke. So what are you going to do? I mean, no one wanted to be around Tom about Sandoval. So I mean, it's kind of the real dynamic. And that's the whole point of it. - Kristen: For me, I think the quote unquote like redemption arc when I watched it, it wasn't about you. And at points, it wasn't even about Sandoval. I think it was the Lala of it trying to like, I don't know, it was like it just felt it didn't feel very authentic at times with Lala and kind of being Sandoval or like even Scheana. - Kristen: I know Scheana struggled a lot, though, but like, just certain times I felt like, because it wasn't you shoving Sandoval down people's throats, there were other people doing it and it felt like less genuine. But I don't think that you did. - Kristen: I think this is the first time not only on Vanderpump Rules, but really, since I've known you, that I've seen you kind of stand up to him and say like, this is like not you stopped sugarcoating shit. You weren't hurtful, but you just had to be more stern with him. - Schwartz: Well, there was some tough love. In order, it's like, dude, we put a hefty sum, you know, like I try not to think like this because it's not healthy, but you know, I could have bought a beautiful home, a nice appreciating asset and sat back and just chilled out. - Schwartz: But you know, I decided to open a bar and I'm taking ownership of it. But it's like when you do that, you put everything on the line for it, then all of a sudden, the brand name is, you know, severely jeopardized because of someone else's actions. It's hard not to be bitter. - Kristen: But of course, of course, but I think time does heal. And I think is from what I've seen, like there were definitely moments and I even said this on Watch What Happens Live when I was on it, like that I saw the glimpses of like a genuine old Tom who was really feeling his feelings. - Kristen: And even though a lot of people maybe didn't want to believe him, like I could see the difference and I genuinely believed his apologies and I do understand also that like it gets to a point where you do feel so beat down because I've been in that position obviously in the past, where it's like how many more times can I say I'm sorry? - Kristen: Where you kind of just get really frustrated, where it's like what the fuck else can I do? Do you want my firstborn child, like you guys, I'm eating shit a little bit. I just think the problem was Ariana wasn't ready and too many people weren't letting that go. And I think that's what it appeared to be. Like they're going to figure that out. She'll figure that out in her own time. - Kristen: I think when she has, I think this hiatus you guys are having is going to be really helpful for everyone to heal and move on and like live their own lives. - Kristen: So then hopefully you guys come back for a season 12 and we get to watch something more fresh, not like, okay, jump back in, no, we just did the reunion, but now a month later, we're going to keep talking about it again. Everyone's still kind of in the same place, you know?
The show taking a break (Timestamp: 8:15) - Schwartz: But yeah, I think that was beautifully stated. I think people need a little break. I think the show, I like that we're actually taking a little breather that is postponed. - Schwartz: I don't know what the future of the whole looks like, but maybe I'm delusional, but I feel like we're just gearing up for a whole new chapter. I don't know. I think the show needs to breathe a little bit. - Schwartz: There's some overexposure. I think there's some you know what of all fatigue, and it's like it got a little dark. Usually, the show has always been 100% authentic. Doute, you lived it with me. We were friends before the show. I think it was always more levity to it. It just got a little bleak, a little dismal for me the past few years. But I don't know. I think everyone's healing. - Schwartz: That was my mantra for the season, but no one wanted to hear it. Forgiveness is healing.
How the reunion was different (Timestamp: 9:04) - Kristen: At least for part one of the reunion, and I've heard some of you guys talk about this, I think the girls on Watch What Happens Live, that it wasn't as heated of a reunion as it has been in the past. It wasn't screaming and shouting and threatening to fight and things like that, which makes it so much more interesting because it's hard to hear. - Schwartz: I think so too. I love nuance and civil conversation. I'm intrigued by that. Of course, I like drama. I like a little blow up, a meltdown here and there, a mic rip, a signature Kristen Doute mic rip. - Kristen: Oh, totally. - Schwartz: But yeah, we had a pretty civil discourse. I don't want to make it sound boring because it was raw and intense. And I think just seeing some of the sentiment on Twitter and stuff, I think it's like you got to admire Lala's propensity to show up and do the work, do her job. - Schwartz: But at the same time, when you explicitly talk about it as if it's a job, it inherently detracts from the reality. So it's like Doute and Luke, you've been doing it long enough now. It's like an unspoken rule in the biz. - Schwartz: You have to be radically honest, remove your filter, and you have to bring it. But in talking about that and breaking the fourth wall, I don't know, lately I've been feeling like it's jeopardizing the authenticity of it. Because these are our real lives, we're not acting, we're not making up storylines. - Kristen: No, I agree with you about the Lala thing. And I think I've even maybe not explained it in the best way where I've said on our podcast recapping it, it felt like no one else wanted to talk about whatever the thing was like calling Rachel or certain moments or go have hot dogs with Jo. I guarantee that every other female cast member was like, hell no. - Kristen: And so Lala was like, I'll fucking do it. And so that's what I think to listeners, to you guys, like what we're trying to explain about reality TV. The job of it is being authentic and you can't have these conversations privately about Girl Joe or about this or that whatever. - Kristen: And then when the cameras are up, go, no, we're not doing that because essentially it means like, oh, the audience will rip us apart because we can't do that. You know what I'm saying? And so the job that Lala did is just saying the things that were already being said behind, like off camera. - Schwartz: Totally. - Kristen: So I do get her a lot of credit for that. - Schwartz: Me too. Lala brings it without a doubt. You know, she's a star on the show, but you know, it's like when you talk about it explicitly, I think, I don't know, in my mind, I worry that it jeopardizes the autisticity, but there's no doubt about it. Lala shows up. It does the work. - Schwartz: And it's like, the thing is a lot of those conversations are conversations you should have. They're like healthy, therapeutic conversations, ones that you would just rather put off. Let's talk about it a month, three months from now, maybe never, preferably sweep it under the rug, say la vie. - Schwartz: But like, you know, short term, it's like we live almost in a condensed time scale when we do reality TV. And it's as awful as some of those conversations are to have. It's like long term, they're usually therapeutic and probably healthy. - Schwartz: But like in Ariana's case this year at the reunion and everything, in like the grey walling and stuff, and just given that it was like this national global sensation, I think her not wanting to have that conversation with Tom at the end, I think it was earned. But you know, I also see other people's viewpoint, like, you know, we've all had to have such horribly uncomfortable conversations. But anyways, I think it seems polarized online. - Kristen: Of course it does - Schwartz: I think it was earned from Arianna, yeah.
What was it like watching the final act of the show together, live on stage, and then immediately having to talk about it? (Timestamp: 12:47) - Schwartz: I think I cried. It didn't feel like a finale finale to me, but it just it felt like a retrospective. And it got me, I don't know, got me feeling all kinds of nostalgia, you know, we've had like, we kind of even know some of us were in our 30s, we kind of grew up on television, you know, it's like, um, yeah, I don't know. - Schwartz: We really did. And like, we've forged really deep, meaningful friendships. Kristen, you're the second person I ever met in Los Angeles, you know, I love you. You're my family. - Kristen: Love you. - Schwartz: And yeah, it got me feeling a lot of feels.
What are going to do since you aren’t filming this summer? (Timestamp: 20:18) - Schwartz: I'm going to start sidequesting. You know what I mean? I don't know if you remember, Kristen, but before the pandemic, I was getting to the point where I was just confident enough to DJ in the bars. - Schwartz: I want to be able to DJ in my bars. I'm not trying to be like superstar DJ. I just want to be able to DJ in my bars. We're kind of relaunching our whiskey, which I'm super stoked about. We're going to be doing some bottle signings next week. We got distribution in California, which is cool. - Schwartz: I'm going to travel for the first time in my life. I'm planning on playing the World Series of Poker, Kristen, you know, I'm an avid poker player. - Schwartz: Also, this is another dream that I think is finally coming to fruition. I have property in Florida. I'm finally going to build a house for my family there and I have like this little pond. - Schwartz: I've been working out like every day eating healthier and I'm reading a little bit again. I stopped reading for like the past four years.
Jo (Timestamp: 30:25) - Kristen: And I don't want to give this too much attention because I feel like this clip as we're speaking is going to end up on an Instagram Live very shortly. But I just want to say that I, as of her last Instagram Live or whenever that was, you let me read your text to her in its entirety. - Kristen: And my frustration lies in that she was cherry picking bits and pieces and not reading the context behind these things, leaving out things that you said that were very kind, as well as leaving out things that you had to call her out on that frustrated you. And we're not going to say what those things are because that's between the two of you. And we're not going to pull out Jo by talking more about that. - Kristen: But I just want people to know that because everyone's like, well, what happened? What's the main thing? And why did it turn this way so quickly? - Kristen: So I think, is that fair to say that you explained yourself in a very lengthy way and said everything you had to say. And it was you that sent the text. - Schwartz: Yeah, it was firm, but constructive. And yeah, it felt like a major violation when she went and read that. And she cherry picked it to fit her narrative online. And like, I get it. She's going through some feelings, like she's hurt a little bit. You know, like, I know I'm very familiar with the feeling of being rejected. - Schwartz: But it's like, the reasons I pulled away from Jo are very valid and she has to respect those. Like she just, I mean, yeah, I'm not going to get into it because I don't want to do that to her. But like she's she's she's told some egregious lies that I found out and I've debunked and I've called it. - Schwartz: I've called her out on a few of them. But some of them are just so uncomfortable to bring up that I never addressed it. It just we were it just I knew at a certain point that I had to pull away from her. - Schwartz: And, you know, hopefully she can respect that I just it does feel like a violation when she goes on there. And it's like she's kind of spinning this narrative like she's a victim. I played her. - Schwartz: And it's like, poor Jo, I'm like, it's just I don't know, man. I get it that her feelings are hurt. But like if I was to talk about the reasons why I separated from her, which are very valid, I think everybody would be singing a different tune online and like, okay, my god, I'm sorry, I judged you Schwartz. - Kristen: And I will say some of those reasons are reasons why I would not redevelop my friendship with her. Like meaning I've been through some of the things, the lies that you've been through as well. So I just wanted to make that crystal clear for people that I think you handled it so incredibly well. - Kristen: You placed a very intelligent and healthy boundary for yourself, for your relationship, for your mental health, for your sanity, really, so you can have a really healthy, productive, awesome summer. You don't have to film. You don't need all this extra drama in your life. You're just trying to like move on to bigger, better, more positive ways of living, you know? - Schwartz: Yeah, I'm like I'm drama fatigued. And it's like, honestly, maybe it wouldn't have escalated to that. But like over the like while the show was airing, people were continually sending me clips and memes. - Schwartz: Oh my god, she was saying she's making me look bad. And people are rallying against you, you know, Team Jo. And I'm just like, I ignored it for so long. - Schwartz: And I think I just hit my breaking point that day. And there's some other things that happened with my family that I found out that I was very unhappy about. And anyways, anyways, so yeah, I just I cut her off. I blocked her. I don't harbor any resentment. I'm not like harboring ill. - Schwartz: I don't want, you know, I'm not sending bad vibes out there or whatever. - Kristen: Totally. It's just a boundary. - Schwartz: I wish her well, but yeah, she's not in my life in any capacity anymore and never will be. - Luke: Last question about on this topic. Have you seen Baby Reindeer? - Schwartz: No, I have not seen Baby Reindeer. - Luke: Are you familiar with what it is? - Schwartz Vaguely. - Kristen: You need to watch it though. - Luke: It's worth it. - Schwartz: I don't know. But anyways, I'll leave on a positive note, you know, anyways, yeah, no hard feelings no hard feelings at all.
Sandoval and Schwartz living situation (Timestamp: 45:30) - Schwartz: Well, listen, it's kind dynamic right now. I'm thinking about downsizing slightly, maybe a cool little lot. First of all, I've always wanted to live in a loft, a cool artist loft. - Schwartz: I found a really cool one in the valley. I was thinking about possibly downsizing while I build my house in Florida, just to cut costs a little bit. The optics of me moving in with Sandoval are not good for my personal growth and everything. - Schwartz: I also don't mind helping my friend out because I don't know exactly what's going to happen with the house, but I know his mortgage is going to be a lot more should he get to keep the house. I don't mind helping my buddy out either. It's like I'd rather give him some of my money, have a little backyard, a pool, and chill out there while I build my house in Florida, but it for sure wouldn't be anything long term. - Schwartz: As much as we love each other, and we've had very healthy conversations about this. We're like, dude, I don't really want to live with you. He's like, I don't want to live with you either, but I'm thinking it would be fun one last time before we get too old, we get hitched, have kids. Maybe it'd be fun to live together, but it's like, my god, the sentiment online is like, ew, don't do it, loser.

Joe Pass said in one of his video lessons: "If you can't repeat what you've just played, it's not music" (or something like that). I guess he meant you have to have it in your head first before actually making a sound out of your guitar.
I'm not anywhere near that level, but I'm wondering how much of it holds true for fellow guitarists out there. Would you guys be able to hum along note for note while you improvise? Do you think this holds true for well known guitar players?

It seems like every day I see at least one comment in this sub about how some people value the software business at $0, or at least say it's "not really worth anything".
A year ago, I would have agreed that the software valuation was a slow grind down.
Today, with the advancements in AI, that couldn't be more wrong.
Here's why:
There are several players in this business, but the "market leader" is Microsoft's Power BI offering.
Power BI works differently than MicroStrategy. In Power BI, dashboards are built individually as "workbooks" similar to Excel workbooks. They used this framework to make usability similar to their Office platform for a better user experience. Each Power BI dashboard might have an "Income" measure, but the calculation for that measure may be different in each dashboard. This means that Dashboard A might define "Income" as "revenue - advertising costs" but Dashboard B might define it as "revenue - cost of goods - taxes". This allows a higher degree of customization from one dashboard to the next, but it could cause an AI to get confused when you ask it to tell you sales for last month. In Power BI, measures are defined at the "workbook" level using DAX functions.
MicroStrategy uses a different architecture known as the schema layer. In MicroStrategy when you create a metric, that metric is a global object. The definition for "Income" is defined once at the environment (actually called "project") level. Then when you create a dashboard, you drag in that pre-defined metric. This makes it very difficult for "non-experts" to create new metrics. It requires a completely separate application to define metrics in MicroStrategy (called "MicroStrategy Workstation"). Joe in marketing cannot just go in and define "Income" like he could do easily in Power BI. A year ago I saw this as a major disadvantage for the MicroStrategy ecosystem because why wouldn't you buy the system that is much easier to use (i.e. Power BI)??
Overall, MicroStrategy does require more technical skills to be able to develop in; whereas Power BI and Tableau were designed to be easier to start developing in at the cost of what's known as "data governance". This is why a lot of organizations have gone with Power BI / Tableau, because they don't require as highly-skilled (expensive) consultants to get set up.
Why does this matter? Because of MicroStrategy's schema-based approach to their software, that makes AI integration much simpler. In fact, Power BI has not really integrated customer-focused AI, which I suspect is for this exact reason. If I ask Copilot what my quarterly sales trend looks like, it can't go to a pre-defined schema layer to determine those values. If I ask the same question to an AI connected to MicroStrategy, it can look at the "Income" metric in the schema layer, break it by quarter, and give me the result. It is a lot more seamless.
Based on this, I feel the software business is poised to solidly beat expectations and enter a stage of strong growth.
I encourage anyone interested to check out Power BI vs. MSTR's latest AI offerings. You can decide on your own which one you think will sell more.
Microsoft has integrated Copilot into Power BI for development, but it doesn't really work at the user facing level.

MicroStrategy has integrated OpenAI at the user-facing level. Meaning end-users (not developers) can ask questions about data and get results. This cannot currently be done in Power BI and because of it's architecture, it's going to be difficult if not impossible for Microsoft to achieve this.

I recently transfered my offline server to online but there is 2 things that are problems but all your items in your inventory/echest stay!
the 2 problems are since your pets have a "different owner" cause of the uuid you dont have control
and your stats get reset
But its a small price for cracked to be off
DO THIS IN NOTEPAD THEN COPY PASTE BACK INTO YOUR SERVER
To turn cracked off go into your minecraft server and copy and paste your whole whitelist into a notepad and label at the top CRACKED UUIDS so you remember and then do that again for the bottom but instead of cracked uuids you label it MOJANG UUIDS.
Then you need to go through the bottom where your mojang uuids are because the cracked ones are there and delete the cracked uuids and then go to the website https://namemc.com/ and when you type in the players username copy the one with the dashes and put it in the section on your notepad now do this for all uuids
If there is a cracked player all there data is bye bye, erase them from the mojang uuid section there are irrelevant
Once Finished go to your server files, I use filezilla for my shockbyte server so if you have an external 3rd party program do as I say its all generally the same
Once connected to your 3rd party service for your server click world or whatever your minecraft world file is named
Then Click playerdata
THIS IS A VERY TEDIOUS PROCESS TAKE YOUR TIME
Once you see all the random letters and numbers which is player data use your notepad and start from the top of the cracked uuids to help your search do (ctrl f) on your keyboard it will pop a word search
Make sure during your process that the period on (.dat) and (.dat.old) dont get erased that stays the WHOLE UUID goes
Once you find the first players cracked uuid rename it to the mojang uuid
Do this for everybody
If you HAVE A CRACKED PLAYER DELETE THERE UUID
You might also have had your server on non-cracked/online mode for alittle, dont ever be scared to overwrite something some players might have a popup its all good
Now go into your servers website and the rest is through it

CLICK CONFIG FILES
CLICKED WHITELISTED PLAYERS
WITH THE FORMAT COPY AND PASTED FROM THE BEGINNING PUT THE MOJANG UUIDS INTO WHITELISTED PLAYERS REMOVE THE OLD WITH THE NEW
Now this is the format of whitelist with my server: (Note: the extra dashes is mojang accounts and the zeros are cracked)

Let me preface this by saying that I do not think this theory precludes this song being about her muse(s). But I think this song is also about Taylor's fame and her relationships with her fans.
It's no secret that a number of her previous albums offer a glimpse into her complicated relationship with her celebrity and how it has affected her romantic relationships. Her personal life was arguably part of the reason for her rise to fame; few pop artists have such a personal discography. In songs like "The Prophecy," her anxiety around this is clear ("I'm so afraid I sealed my fate/No sign of soulmates"). She seems to understand that her relationships, while being the source of so many of her most impressive work ("it's the worst men I write best"), are also imperiled because of her fame ("The Lucky One," "peace," ". At the same time, she is not willing to let it go; also present in her discography are themes of being forgotten, fading away, losing her fame ("Long Live," "Nothing New," and now "Clara Bow").
This brings us to Fortnight, a song about her most stable and contentious relationship to date: her relationship with fame and her fans.
"I was supposed to be sent away/But they forgot to come and get me/I was a functioning alcoholic/'Til nobody noticed my new aesthetic" Note the repeated reference to being forgotten, unnoticed. Taylor was quiet during two periods of her career: post-Snakegate, and then again during 2020-2021 (Joe? or the Pandemic? or both). We see her anger at being ignored.
"All of this to say I hope you're okay/But you're the reason/And no one here's to blame/But what about your quiet treason?" The juxtaposition here of guilt: "you're the reason" and then "no one here's to blame," settling on "your quiet treason," suggesting not outright malice but neglect or passive aggression. To what degree do her fans hold responsibility for her unhappiness? She doesn't seem sure.
"And for a fortnight there, we were foreveRun into you sometimes, ask about the weathe Now you're in my backyard, turned into good neighbors/Your wife waters flowers, I wanna kill her" This part struck me because it's such a contrast to "Long Live," where the speaker reflects fondly on their time in the spotlight. Here, she imagines her fans have moved on; they hear from her sometimes, but she no longer has their full attention. Think of how former It Girls (Stevie Nicks!) are still around and making music, still have fans, but they aren't the name on everyone's lips anymore. This causes not nostalgia but anger.
"All my mornings are Mondays stuck in an endless February/I took the miracle move-on drug, the effects were temporary/And I love you, it's ruining my life/I love you, it's ruining my life I touched you for only a fortnight/I touched you, but I touched you" Like "Long Live," this references fame as fleeting and temporary, and she can't forget it. Having ascended to this level of fame and accomplishment is also a curse, because she cannot let it go. "The miracle-move on drug" in this interpretation might be a quiet or more domestic life, which she may have had with Joe for a time ("The Lakes"). But it couldn't sustain her, she needed to be back in the spotlight ("Bejeweled").
"And for a fortnight there, we were foreveRun into you sometimes, ask about the weatheNow you're in my backyard, turned into good neighbors/Your wife waters flowers, I wanna kill heAnd for a fortnight there, we were togetheRun into you sometimes, comment on my sweateNow you're at the mailbox, turned into good neighbors/My husband is cheating, I wanna kill him" Here, Taylor imagines moving on like her fans will; she has married also, she crosses paths with those who have once been her fans, who haven't forgotten her completely or ignored her, but also don't have the passion for her they once did ("good neighbors" are pleasant and cordial but generally unobtrusive). We still see her anger and resentment, not just at the change in relationship, but also in her new relationship. Her husband (a reference to a quiet, domestic life) is not only unsatisfying, he's actively betraying her.
"I love you, it's ruining my life/I love you, it's ruining my life/I touched you for only a fortnight/I touched you, I touched you/I love you, it's ruining my life/I love you, it's ruining my life/I touched you for only a fortnight/I touched you, I touched you" This section feels manic, as the speaker repeats over and over her desire and how that desire has also ruined her life — the touch of fame was enough to curse her for all time.
"Thought of callin' ya, but you won't pick up/'Nother fortnight lost in America/Move to Florida, buy the car you want/But it won't start up 'til you touch, touch, touch me/Thought of calling ya, but you won't pick up/'Nother fortnight lost in America/Move to Florida, buy the car you want/But it won't start up 'til I touch, touch, touch you" In the outro, the object of the speaker's affection references their own nostalgia, but it's almost taunting — "I'd reach out but you won't pick up anyway, go ahead and move on, but nothing will ever give you what we had." This is the saddest part of the song for me; fame will move on to another object (another fortnight lost in America), but the best she can manage after this is a domestic distraction (Florida/cars) that will ultimately be unsatisfying. The inclusion of Post Malone is also an interesting choice with this theme; no offense to Posty, but he has a very of-the-moment look and career choices that will forever read 2010-2020s.
In the end, this song is such a tragic companion to the joyful post-fame future we saw in "Long Live." Taylor has achieved her greatest professional dreams, but they have made her outsize (the monster on the hill, if you will). How can she maintain the level of career success she has conceived and also settle down with the love of her life? How will she ever find that love in the first place? And even if she did, how can she ever have the normal life we hear that she longs for (rings, cradles, strollers)? In "Cassandra," she ruminates on a gift that was also a curse. But she also acknowledges her part in this in the Prophecy: " I got cursed like Eve got bitten/Oh, was it punishment?" — her actions have caused this reaction. Clara Bow once said, "I'm almost never satisfied with myself or my work or anything ... by the time I'm ready to be a great star I'll have been on the screen such a long time that everybody will be tired of seeing me." She fears she's trapped, but by whom? Herself, or us? In TTPD, we see a star who once again must reconcile the price of fame.

Alice Cooper Killer (Red/Black) (VG+/VG+) Vinyl is being graded conservatively and is very clean. Sleeve has a bit of wear, particularly along the edges and corners but it's largely very clean. $23
Arctic Monkeys AM (Mispress) (VG+/VG+) Y'know how there was that mispressed version of AM that slipped out a year or so back with two Side Bs? Well, this mispress has two Side As. The correct labels are on both sides but the matrix on each reads Side A and, well, that's what you get. I actually also have copies of the mispress with Side B on both so, y'know, if you'd like to combine those two mispresses, you'll have a complete version of the album (...) I have two copies of this double A-side. The vinyl on both is VG+. One of the sleeves, however, has a hype sticker affixed directly to the sleeve, so I'm knocking that one down to VG. VG sleeved version is $15. VG+ sleeved version is $20. If you'd like to combine either of these with a VG+/VG+ version of the double B-side version, I'll do it for $40 shipped.
Karen Dalton In My Own Time (CleaBlack Swirl) (NM/VG+) Vinyl is near pristine. Jacket has minimal shelfwear. $30
Father John Misty I Love You, Honeybear (Tricolored, Diorama) (VG/VG) So, this is the original release featuring the diorama fold-out (no midi-player with this version and this one doesn't include the cassette) on tricolored vinyl. The sleeve is largely sharp and I'm grading it somewhat conservatively. Knocking it down because there's a bit of wear along the bottom edge and a teeny, tiny little ding/split (1cm) on the top. As was common with this release, however, the vinyl has a strong warp. They were originally packaged inside the sleeve the weight of the diorama just bowled them. It was a common enough issue that they later re-released this version with the platters outside the sleeve. I gave it a test and it did play through but my needle was certainly riding the waves. If someone wants to take the time to flattened those platters, you'll have a really nice copy. $25
Flamin' Groovies Shake Some Action (180G) (VG/VG+) Grading this one conservatively. Plays and looks much closer to VG+ but there are a few light hairlines and a couple of divots from manufacturing on both sides. When played, there's perhaps a brief, audible whoosh or drop-out in those spots but nothing ever dominates the music or skips. Sleeve is sharp. Classic, classic album at a low price. $12
Francoise Hardy Tous Les Garcons Et Les Filles (LITA) (VG/VG+) Grading very conservatively. Vinyl would be NM if not for a scuff toward the end of B1/beginning of B2 that creates a bit of noise (but nothing that dominates the music) for about 30 seconds. Otherwise a beautiful copy. Obi included. I also have copies of other Hardy LPs in stock if you check my recent posts. $17
Howlin' Wolf His Greatest Sides Volume 1 (Starburst, Cancelled Edition) So, this one is almost one of a kind. It's an advance copy (essentially used as a test pressing) of what was going to be an exclusive variant of His Greatest Sides Vol. 1 on starburst vinyl for an indie retailer. There were a number of issues with the press, however, and the entire run was cancelled. This is one of a handful that exist. There are a variety of little issues that I noticed upon testing it - the run-in to A1 shoots the needle about halfway across the track, there are odd bits of crackle or noise in the mix, etc. It's got a share of defects but largely plays through without those issues dominating the music (except, y'know, that first track that ultimately starts about halfway in. Cute little collectable. $20
Jellyfish Live At Bogart's (Blue, etched) (VG/VG+) Most of the vinyl looks great but there are a few spots with issues. There's a mechanical scuff on the exact same spot on sides C & D. It runs across the entirety of the first track and into the second on both sides. It looks bad and I assumed it would cause a skip but, upon testing, it just produces some noise and the occasional pop. There's also another scuff on Side D running from tracks 1-3. It's lighter but does produce a bit of noise. Jacket is largely clean but has a half-inch seam split. $22
Kreator Hate Uber Alles (Transparent Red, SIGNED) (VG+/VG+) So, I don't think the vinyl has ever actually been played. It's very clean. The sleeve has been signed by the members of the band (two in black sharpie, two in silver sharpie). Super nice copy. $50
Pixies Doolittle (Bronze/Green Swirl) (VG/VG+) A Side is very clean. B side has a number of scuffs that produces varying degrees of noise (but no skips). There's a faint hairline or two running the length of the side that don't produce much in the way of noise. There's also, however, a bad scratch that affects bits of the last three tracks (the worst of it on Gouge Away). Those sections have some routine noise, pops, etc. It doesn't overpower the music but it's noticeable. Sleeve stored in shrink. $30
Lou Reed I'm Waiting For The Man (May 1965 Demo) (Yellow, Promo-Only Flexidisc) (NM/Generic) Unplayed flexi comes complete with letter from the label. $7.50
U-Roy Version Galore (G+/G+) Here's a well-loved copy of U-Roy's Version Galore. I'm grading a little conservatively but, y'know, it's an old Treasure Isle press that was never going to be the quietest thing even when it was brand new - and it certainly isn't brand new anymore. There's a little bed of noise throughout and sections that have some pops and clicks (first 30 seconds of A1 and B1 for example), a few scuffs and hairlines, one or two scratches that are a bit worse. Nothing causes a skip but you're going to get the occasional snap, crackle, and pop. Cover is all in tact and the art looks pretty good but there are warn edges, corners, bit of scuffing, etc. If you like your reggae with a bit of a warm, fire-side ambiance, you could do a lot worse than this classic at $10.

All three of the nation’s major stock indexes hit record highs today after the latest data showed inflation cooling. Standard and Poor’s 500, more commonly known as the S&P 500, measures the stock performance of 500 of the largest companies listed on U.S. stock exchanges. Today it was up 61 points, or 1.2%. The Nasdaq Composite is weighted toward companies in the information technology sector. Today it was up 231 points, or 1.4%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, often just called the Dow, measures 30 prominent companies listed on U.S. stock exchanges. Today it was up 350 points, or 0.9%. The Dow ended the day at 39,908, approaching 40,000.
Driving the hike in the stock market, most likely, is the information released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the Labor Department saying that inflation eased in April. Investors are guessing this makes it more likely that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates this year.
People note—correctly—that the stock market does not reflect the larger economy. This makes a report released yesterday from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, or CBO, an important addition to the news from the stock market. It concludes that the goods and services an American household consumed in 2019 were cheaper in 2023 than they were four years before, because incomes grew faster than prices over that four-year period. That finding was true for all levels of the economy.
That is, “for all income groups…the portion of household income required to purchase the same bundle of goods and services declined.” Those in the bottom 20% found that the share of their income required to purchase the same bundle dropped by 2%. For those in the top 20%, the share of their income required to purchase as they did in 2019 dropped by 6.3%.
These statistics come on top of unemployment below 4% for a record 27 months, and more than 15 million jobs created since Biden took office, including 789,000 in manufacturing. According to Politifact, three quarters of those jobs represented a return to the conditions before the coronavirus pandemic, but the rest are new. Politifact noted that it is so rare for manufacturing jobs to bounce back at all, that the only economic recovery since World War II that beats the current one was in 1949, making the recovery under the Biden-Harris administration the strongest in 72 years.
And yet, a recent Philadelphia Inquirer/New York Times/Siena College poll found that 78% of Pennsylvania voters thought the economy was “fair” or “poor.” Fifty-four percent of them said they trust Trump to handle the economy better than Biden, compared with just 42% who prefer Biden.
The divorce between reality and people’s beliefs illuminates just how important media portrayals of events are.
In the landslide election of 1892, when voters elected Democrat Grover Cleveland to the White House for the third time (he won the popular vote in 1888 but lost in the electoral college) and put Democrats in charge of the House of Representatives and the Senate, Republicans insisted that the economy would collapse. The previous administration, that of Republican Benjamin Harrison, had openly and proudly worked for businessmen, and Republicans maintained that losing that administration would be a calamity. Democrats, the Republicans insisted, were really socialists and anarchists who wanted to destroy America.
As Republican newspapers predicted an impending collapse, fearful investors pulled out of the market. Although economic indicators were actually better in 1892 than they had been for years, as soon as Cleveland was elected, the nation seemed to be in terrible trouble. Money began to flow out of the stock market, and the outgoing Harrison administration refused to reassure investors. By February 1893 the stock market was paralyzed.
In mid-February, financier J. P. Morgan rushed to Washington to urge Harrison to do something, but the calm of the administration men remained undisturbed. Secretary of the Treasury Charles Foster commented publicly that the Republicans were responsible for the economy only until March 4, the day Cleveland would take office. His job was to “avert a catastrophe up to that date.”
He didn’t quite manage it. On Friday, February 17, the stock market began to collapse. By February 23 the slaughter was universal. Investors begged Harrison to relieve the crisis, but with only eight days left in his term, Harrison and his men maintained that nothing important was happening. The secretary of the Treasury spent his last few days in office sitting for his portrait. The New York Times noted that “[i]f the National Treasury Department had been retained especially to manufacture apprehension and create disturbance it could not have done more effective work.”
Secretary Foster had one more parting shot. When he handed the Treasury Department off to his Democratic successor, he told the newspapers that “the Treasury was down to bedrock.”
When Cleveland took office on March 4, 1893, a financial panic was in full swing. As he tried to negotiate that crisis, Republicans sagely told voters the crash was the result of the Democrats’ policies. When Democrats turned to an income tax so they could lower the tariffs that were hurting consumers, Republicans insisted they were socialists. When unemployed workers and struggling farmers marched on Washington to ask for jobs or launched railroad strikes, Republicans insisted that Democrats stood with the mob, while Republicans were the party of law and order.
Republicans promised voters that they would restore the health of the economy. The 1894 midterm elections reversed the landslide of 1892, giving Republicans 130 more seats in the House—a two-thirds majority—and a majority in the Senate. The economy had begun to recover before the election, and that uptick continued. The Democrats had plunged the country into a panic, the Chicago Tribune reported, but now “American manufacturers and merchants and business-men generally will draw a long breath of relief.”
How the media covers events matters.
Allison Fisher of Media Matters reported today that with the exception of MSNBC, national television news failed to cover the extraordinary story reported by Josh Dawsey and Maxine Joselow on May 9 in the Washington Post that Trump had told oil executives that if they gave $1 billion to his campaign, he would get rid of all the regulations the Biden administration has enacted to combat climate change.
In the 1920s, President Warren G. Harding’s secretary of the interior, Albert Fall, went to prison for a year for accepting a $385,000 bribe from oilman Edward L. Doheny in exchange for leases to drill for oil on naval reserve land in Elk Hills and Buena Vista, California, and Teapot Dome, Wyoming. Fall was the first former cabinet officer to go to prison, and the scandal was considered so outrageous that “Teapot Dome” has gone down in U.S. history as shorthand for a corrupt presidency.
