Real Faction Diplomacy -- DLC Idea?

2024.05.03 00:54 RHX_Thain Real Faction Diplomacy -- DLC Idea?

Diplomacy!

The purpose of the addon is to provide real Faction Motivations and Relationships, treating Faction Leader Pawns as the trend setter for trade and behavior, engaging in territorial disputes and waging war, signing treaties, and engaging in negotiations with each other and the player.
Guiding philosophies:
Why do we want this?
So here are the core Leadership concepts:
Leader Traits and Skills define that faction's trade policy, behavior, etc. Leadership Traits are now a synthesis of existing traits, such as Sanguine or Bloodlust, and skills. Sanguine results in a peaceful faction, Bloodlust results in a hostile faction. Intellect gives the faction better tech skills and items to trade, Shooting and Melee gives them more soldiers and weapons of these types, and Social gives them a higher chance of rolling high during negotiations, etc.
There is a Global Leader, and Local Leader. The Local Leaders, just like the above, give that town its own political tone, and smaller variations in the overall trade items and skills available. So if the Global Leader has low Shooting, high Medicine, high Intellect, all the towns in the faction have a lot of advanced medicine, medical beds, body parts, and antibiotics, but very few if no guns to trade. But if a Local Leader has high shooting, suddenly there are a lot more guns. Vice Versa. The economy of trade follows this rule too. Especially around food and joy/luxuries.
Bloodlust pawns dislike Sanguine pawns. Lazy pawns dislike Industrious pawns. This web sets up a paradigm of conflicts, where Factions with leaders who are a lot alike will band together against those they have less in common. Not always -- Proximity, Time At Peace, Time At War, and Threat vs Defense, would play a role too -- but at its core, the Aggressive Psychopaths run a more totalitarian show with slaves and war-hawk policies, vs the doves who tend to find slavery abhorrent and only attack if provoked or offended.
Greedy pawns, no matter if they are hawk or dove, will tend to try to hoard wealth and capture points of interest regardless of policies, even against the interests otherwise stated.
Since we can't be aware of DLC features like Ideology, we have to ignore those differences. Maybe a content aware patch at the end could be implemented, but it has to be optional.
So the scenario above, where a Sanguine Global Leader has high intellect and medicine, but low shooting, and the Local Leader is Greedy, has Bloodlust, high shooting, etc -- this is a conflict. Internally, this causes a rebellion to occur, where the Global Leader will want to quell this rebellion, deposing the bloodlust pawn and installing a preferred leader. That spawns a "rebellion" mark on that town, and their army is sent to put it down. The Rebellion may grow if the rebels are able to win. the player may be asked via quest to help put down the rebellion.
Here are the features that would need to exist to support this, based on the Leaders above:
The biggest break in our philosophy to do no re-scope of existing vanilla features is to redistribute the Resources of the RimWorld across the globe. I know, that's a big break! RimWorld is ultimately a 1 Map Game. Everything you need to start, survive, and build the ship to end the game, is all on your 1 map. But if every map you visit is \packed to the gills\** with components and silver and gold and steel... why move? Why have a globe?
So we'd be taking away 95% of all resources from the one map. Instead, like Marble, Granite, Limestone -- we segregate that into the Mountains and Hills as Rich Steel Deposits, or Impacted Components. Fertile soil in flat valleys in temperate zones.
You'll have to form caravans and camping parties to extract he goods, yes. Your one starting location will be King of at least One Exploitable Resource, which you must defend from outside interests, but can also leverage as trade and treaty agreements early on.
Same as above but it's plants and animals. Suddenly, all you need to survive isn't grown on one map. Deserts have all the psychoid (psychoid must flow) and forests have all the heal root. They only grow in their desired regions, and die elsewhere outside of advance hydroponics. The factions who trade for these resources do so now at a premium, and are a reason to go to war to capture their own outposts.
There's now a "global claims" layer on the world map around every town belonging to a Faction. They are claiming that territory as theirs economically, politically, and militarily. If your military crosses those lines they get anxious and call you to ask why. If you don't withdraw they assume hostility. If you have a big military near their borders they may get upset too.
Same is true if you set up camp in their economic claims zones and start mining or harvesting. They will demand you pay tribute / taxes, or abandon the claim to them, or face consequences in lowering relationships. You, as a player, may also gain a border drawing utility, and try to expand your borders by building outposts and amassing guns and armor to pawns you send to serve in your armies. If your borders touch, the owners will call you to negotiate a withdrawal, or sign an alliance, or go to war over border disputes.
Every town gets a pool of military and civilian caravan budgets. They spawn little ions that, just like the player, roam the globe, trading and attacking targets. This is a tough memory issue, and always on, ticking CPU. Lots of caching needed here and good clean code. Big risk there.
Currently, the biggest issue RimWorld has with more than one colony, is that it loads *everything* into memory. We can't change that. But what we can do is get clever. We still close those maps forever, and sending them to an icon on the world map, cached at the state it was saved.
The map's available pawns still live there and can be called to return to the player's main home map at any time, or send new pawns to speed up production. Any facility built there, is still there, and on a timer will produce the items made by the pawns assigned to it at the time they were saved into that now permanently closed map.
That new world map site is still allied to the player, and unless attacked, or suffering toxic fallout, will supply the same crafted items, crops harvested, resources mined (until exhausted,) and still need food and clothing, etc. You may need to defend it. If they are starving the map site is lost for good, loaded only as random ruins and pawn corpses if you visit that tile.
Set one pawn as the leader of your town. I won't get into the styles of government, Ideology already kinda did that. So here we hand waive and sacrifice a Grid of Political Alignments the player may subscribe to. Simpler is better, we just base it on the pawn leader's traits. Players role playing a Raider get Bloodlust raider pawns. Those more chill elect Industrious and Sanguine pawns. That pawn informs your new satellite colony's abilities.
Everyone's favorite. Every town has a local defense pool, of how many soldiers they have vs how many civilians. Soldiers get a minimum amount of shooting and melee, set by their Local leader plus Global Leader policies. Higher Leader Intellect, higher tech guns. Higher shooting & melee -- you get the picture. The size of the town sets the size of their local defenses. LDFs patrol the area around their towns visible on the world map, and go to nearby camps to rest and resupply, before patrolling again. A ring of camps are set up for this purpose.
Players need armies too -- but lets NEVER see them as fully realized pawns. They are just recruits from local areas, nameless, faceless, and roaming the countryside in the armies on the globe as a number. No micromanagement. Just casualties vs recruits and veterans.
The less shown of the invisible hand of this market the better.
Every town gets summed up and donates some fraction of their available soldiers to the main army. This results in a bunch of military parties, which roam the global map of their territory and launch raids against enemies. The big cities have big armies in and out of them. These are your 1000 point raids, very visible on the map. At low tech they clear forests of trees and animals as they march. High tech and they may just drop pod onto your map. GMFs are scary, and also set up a zone of interest around themselves. Their leader pawn also gives them special traits, just as towns enjoy.
When you have your army meet another army, it isn't on your home map anymore. Instead it's on a tile where your army world caravan meets theirs. You clash, and winner takes all. You spawn these armies on opposite sides of this map. If you are defending, you have a limited time to build defenses. Then the other army spawns in. If you're attacking, they have procgen defenses set up when you get there. If you are both running with no time to defend, you spawn in simultaneously and meet in the middle.
Those who retreat spawn into a retreating army that disappears into the nearest town or camp to fill its soldier count. Same for yours if defeated.
Basically a Caravan Raid of epic proportions, with a timer to set up for the defending player.
Allied armies may clash with enemies, and you may offer to join them. These battles are just clashes on the world map between two circles rolling dice in a formula of tech levels and number of soldiers of what skills and health/morale conditions. Once your army reaches to hot stop, you may offer to join, name a price (if your ally is losing, big money, eh?) or join for a positive relationship boost. These in progress battles will have some percent of progress to kill pawns and litter the battlefield with dead. But you get one side of the map from your approach angle on the world map (yay, normal positions!) and you spawn in some of your forces to command.
You may now, when you see the tide has tipped, right click a hostile pawn with one of yours selected and order them to surrender. Social skill and Weapon+Armor+Skills play a role vs their own. If you've killed some percent of their forces, a non-bloodlust, non-psychopath, will probably surrender if more than 50% of their forces are gone, but not fleeing, and/or they are outgunned and outnumbered. Whole towns may surrender this way, and begin paying tribute/taxes to you.
To manage all this, you'll need a UI that tells you what your towns are locally producing and globally have in stock. You may send pawns in these "forever caravans" that manage their own food and needs, increasing their Defense potential. Clicking on a town tells you the Defense rating and number of Soldiers vs Civilians it has there. Also what it imports (needs, higher trade value) and what it has (surplus is better prices.) Trading between towns send caravans which you can raid, disrupting the economy, and starting international incidents.
These groups also roam the world map marauding or fleeing conflicts. You may take in refugees, repel bandits, and assist traders.
Lets face it, RimWorld is Hording Simulator 9000. You gather all these pawns, but the game only planned for like 12 at most. It loves stacks of 2,000,000 alpaca meat, but it chugs memory and CPU. No more! Send all that junk to your outposts!
You can call it back any time, but it is out of sight and out of mind (and out of RAM) where you don't have to think if Sally is going to mood break or Tom and Dick need a new bed together as lovers who both have malaria. Send them to the camps to toil, take a mood hit if it had bad conditions when you saved it to its forever state, and come home if they get home sick and want a short vacation before going back.
You can have 300 pawn colonies -- I've seen it -- at 3fps. Now instead of micromanaging those 300, send them all to outposts in the hundreds. Your main maps is back to the respectable ~23fps as usual with 12 pawns. :p
Some people really love building megacities. But RimWorld is played on 1 map to end that game and build a ship -- game over, you flew way forever. But there are a lot of players who like the come up, and want build a town over and over again, roughing it. The setup is fun! It's when you have a super killbox that's invulnerable and infinite silver production, that it gets boring and we restart.
Now, you can enjoy the start of the game again, building your outposts and towns & cities, while just saving them to this world map to continue on as part of your faction. No, you can't load it again, the game doesn't support that. But it was saved as a picture at the time you left it, and you can still use it to fill your main Faction's resources in the abstract.
Caravans are borderline broken in RimWorld. To fix this, we need to introduce Shipping Crates.
These are portable containers that go into a pack animal (or other thing a mod adds, I won't say it) and you pawns just put all the supplies into that crate. The animals don't stop eating, the pawns go about sleeping and eating, until that crate is full. Then once they are rested and relaxed and fed, off they go all at once, no idling, no going insane, no bullshit.
We'd also need to give this Crate the ability to open a UI that says how many days of food, meds, etc it has for the caravan. But Caravans can now scavenge and find supplies as they go, no play micromanagement needed.
Alliances need food, meds, and manpower. An attack on one is an attack on all. Defense Quests call the player for aid, and you may send forces to aid them, or risk your alliance. This is a quest like any other, but with much bigger timelines to get ready, and we need a smart proximity to adjust those times to call for aid to be sure the player can reach it in time. They may also call targets for the player to attack, which you are obliged to do as part of the alliance. Saying no may jeopardize your alliance too.
Core essential features, boiled down:
Closing:
I think it's probably one of the most requested features as a DLC, and I know there is no chance we ever see it since Ludeon isn't in the business of accepting requests off the internet. They do in fact have lots of great ideas that are HUGE, but they tend, like anomaly and biotech, to be focused on the existing core loop of that 1 Map Policy, instead of daring to go off map for long and really exercise that multi-map & giant planet feature.
BUT -- I have time to kill between post op on a minor head surgery and getting back to work.
SOS2 is nearing its return to the Workshop, too, after 2 years offline being worked on by the community of maintainers and contributors, so I'm thinking about this stuff again. And while I know Kent and I don't have anther big RimWorld mod in us -- there's someone out there who would appreciate these thoughts, I'm sure.
It's also just good practice, designing documents for ideas that will never happen, and getting feedack on them.
While you work on a big project for 5+ years, your idealization and distillation skills, let alone pitch skills, can degrade. The grind of sacrificing your BIG IDEAS to the gods of "okay we have to actually do this now" can deteriorate one's optimism. You cut cut cut until the design document is nice and lean. Like a good cut of mutton. Doable, but still delicious.
So this helps me keep those skills sharp when I need them next.

2024.04.30 15:50 claaayty I think Ikinda f*cked up sa work?

I'm new to this company (almost two months pa lang) and I was given a specific task na as in sa'kin pa lang natuturo. It mainly involves encoding data sa excel then uploading the excel file sa accounting software namin para ma-capture yung tamang computation ng taxes and other info needed.
So month-end na and anyone from the accounting/finance field knows how crucial month-ends are, anyway, so I forgot to upload this certain data kanina kasi supposedly chine-check pa siya ng treasury namin. The process is like this: Ibibigay sa'min yung document (with complete info) Iu-upload yung info sa accounting software ibibigay sa treasury ibabalik sa'min ng treasury para i-encode sa excel and i-upload for vat computation.
Yung document na yun, kinabukasan ang recording and pagpasa, for example, yung mare-receive na dated ng April 25 sa April 26 pa mare-record. So what happened is, dapat lahat ng docu na for April dapat yung pag-upload for taxes lahat sa April rin. So yung mare-receive na dated ng April 30, instead of recording it on May 2 (kasi holiday May 1), dapat inuna ko na yung pag-upload for taxes para ma-capture yung posting date as April, then to follow na lang yung pag-upload ng info sa accounting software (which will be recorded on May 2). But ayern I kinda fucked up kasi inoverlook ko yung dated ng April 30, instead na inupload ko today, di ko na-upload so one of my co-workers had to cover it.
Kinda sad lang kasi nagkamali ako, I take accountability of my action naman and will do better next time, I'm just kinda scared aa supervisor namin huhu. Pero our supervisor is kind naman and di naman siya mabilis magalit, she's a very jolly person and nakaka-joke joke namin kahit minsan crucial working hours. Pero still, since I respect her too much and she kinda expects a lot from me, I'm scared kasi I did something wrong hays. Nahihiya tuloy ako pumasok sa thursday.

2024.04.30 00:22 _Revelator_ Clarkson's Columns: My harvest hymn & An interview with Clarkson and Caleb

My harvest hymn — with added Chinese chemicals
By Jeremy Clarkson (The Sunday Times, April 28)
Many of us will remember that Mungo Jerry song featuring the line, “Have a drink, have a drive. Go out and see what you can find.” And of course we all realise you can’t even think that any more. And nor, really, is it considered acceptable to follow up with: “If her daddy’s rich, take her out for a meal. If her daddy’s poor, just do what you feel.” Times have moved on.
Of course lots of lyrics now feel as if they’re from another aeon. "Clair" by Gilbert O’Sullivan especially. But you might think it’s impossible for the lyrics in a harvest festival hymn to become out of date. “We plough the fields and scatter. The good seed on the land. But it is fed and watered by God’s almighty hand.” Absolute timelessness. It was true ten thousand years ago and it’s true now.
No, it isn’t. God doesn’t water the land any more. The coal-fired Chinese power stations do that. And he doesn’t feed it either. That’s handled by CF Industries, which makes all the chemical fertiliser that farmers use on their fields.
We don’t even scatter seeds any more, because that’s wasteful onanism. We drill them into the ground, at precise intervals and at a precise depth using a computer-controlled, £40,000 seed drill. That’s towed behind a £250,000 Case tractor, which was built in the factory where they used to make Tiger tanks. Not much Goddishness going on in any of that.
There isn’t even any ploughing any more. In the olden days farmers would turn the top layer of soil over using a plough so that the weeds were buried. And because they were deprived of sunlight they died. It was a lovely, natural, rosy-cheeked way of creating the perfect seedbed for the following year’s crop.
But then along came Little Miss Thunberg and her merry band of Packhamites, who decided that 1,500 billion tonnes of carbon is stored in the planet’s soil. And that if you turn this soil over with a plough, all of it will be released into the upper atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide. Which is bad. So the lovely, natural method of killing weeds had to stop. And instead farmers had to use chemical sorcery from Monsanto, BASF and the Zhejiang Xinan Chemical Industrial Group.
Farmers didn’t mind, if I’m honest, because ploughing is extremely expensive. You simply would not believe how much diesel is needed to drag a two-tonne land anchor through a muddy field. Using weedkiller instead is much cheaper.
Or rather it was. But weedkiller prices have gone up dramatically in recent years. And from where I’m sitting it doesn’t really seem to work any more. Every year Kaleb goes into the fields like a rural Terminator, hosing down the weeds with his ungodly chemical sorcery and then, a few weeks later, Cheerful Charlie walks me through the same fields, pointing out the brome and the black-grass, which is easy to spot because it’s purple and green and completely immune to anything the world’s chemists can throw at it.
So this year Charlie said we should become medieval and plough the fields instead. Selfish? Well, yes, this will shoot a tonne of CO2 into the troposphere and that’s obviously bad. And I’ll use four times more diesel than I would if I used weedkiller. So that’s not good for the environment either. But here’s the kicker: I wouldn’t be pumping any chemicals into the soil.
So that’s the choice — soil or sky? You have to hurt one of them if you want to eat. I went for the sky and rented a plough.
I settled on an eight-furrow monster for two good reasons. Number one: the bigger the plough, the faster you get the job done. And number two: none of Kaleb’s tractors would be powerful enough to pull it, so we’d have to use my 270bhp Lamborghini. Which would annoy him. Even admitting that it’s better than his tractors gives him a hot flush. Sometimes he vibrates with fury when he goes near it.
The only drawback to this cleverly wrought large plough plan was that, because Kaleb refuses to drive my tractor, I’d have to do the ploughing.
This is something I’ve done before. It was on Top Gear about 200 years ago and I did very well. Partly this was because my competitors in the ploughing competition were James May and Richard Hammond. And partly because one of the two judges was a really good friend of my mum.
In real life, though, things were different. I couldn’t hitch the plough to the tractor without help. I couldn’t do a three-point turn when it was attached. And I couldn’t make the tractor move when the furrows were in the sodden soil. All four wheels just sort of spun. So I had to lift the plough slightly, which meant I wasn’t ploughing. Or wiggle the steering wheel, which made big holes and, when it worked, caused me to set off in a new direction. It began to look as if a drunk, blind man with no arms was doing the ploughing.
All the time I was watching the fuel gauge plummet like the depth gauge in a holed submarine, and wondering if it might be cheaper, easier and kinder to the environment to use chemical weedkiller instead.
This is farming. Only last week I discovered that approximately 18 billion slugs have come to live in the fields where I’ve planted spring barley. If I adopt a live-and-let-live rewilding attitude and do nothing they will eat the lot and, next year, there will be no Hawkstone lager. As that makes no sense, I therefore have to pepper the field with slug pellets, which will kill them. Great. But these pellets will also kill all the worms. So what’s the answer? There isn’t one.
Similarly, I have signed up to the government’s eco-friendly grant scheme and will be planting things that aren’t food in three fields. They’re good for the soil and they’re good for my bank balance. But it means I’m not growing stuff people can eat. I know one chap who has taken 60 per cent of his farm out of food production and he’s not alone. So yippee. All that stored carbon and all of that fixed-in nitrogen.
But what if you want some bread? You’ll have to get a loaf made from wheat that was grown abroad. And how’s that good for global warming? And will it have been grown under the same stringent rules that we have here? Or will it have been fertilised with human faeces? You face a choice then. Do you want net zero in the UK? Or do you want to eat a Mexican’s turd?
Do you want lager or worms? Do you want healthy soil or a healthy sky? Do you want bees or orangutans? These are the questions I’m facing every single day. It’s a multiple-choice world of no right answers.
Which brings us back to another harvest festival hymn.
All things bright and beautiful. All birds that must be plucked. No matter what we choose to do, we’re well and truly.

Kaleb Cooper: ‘I’ve taught someone triple my age to do a better job’
The Diddly Squat farmers Jeremy Clarkson and Kaleb Cooper are back for a third series. We put our wellies on to meet the odd couple of the Cotswolds
By Ben Dowell (The Times, April 29)
During filming for the forthcoming third series of Clarkson’s Farm, Kaleb Cooper drove into work and saw Jeremy Clarkson vacuuming a blackberry bush. While the spectacle was “something I am never going to forget”, the sandy-haired, cherub-faced youngster was so unimpressed that he didn’t even get out of his car to ask what was happening.
These two have grown into one of television’s best double acts. For the show’s executive producer, Peter Fincham, there is an “element of Jeeves and Wooster” about them, a delicious odd couple relationship that is all the more gratifying because the team didn’t need to cast Cooper. He was already working on Diddly Squat Farm when the show started.
Cooper is a farmer to the tips of his muddy wellies and has taught Clarkson most of the practical business of farming his 1,000-acre establishment near Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire, as well as how hard the job is and the risks farmers take for little financial reward. Cooper may have just completed a sell-out national stage tour building on his popularity and more than two million Instagram followers. He may have been invited to No 10 to meet Rishi Sunak (more on that later), but everyone on the show — the producers, one of Cooper’s “Chippy” friends I spoke to and Clarkson himself — are clear: the 25-year-old hasn’t changed one iota since the show started airing in 2021.
“I think it’s very easy to be grounded if you don’t leave Chipping Norton,” Clarkson says. His girlfriend, Lisa Hogan, who has become another star of the show, agrees. “How Kaleb comes across is exactly how he is. He is very thoughtful and kind and very bright. His use of language is also very easy on the ear. We could have had a monosyllabic tractor driver and that wouldn’t have worked but we were lucky we had Kaleb.”
He has written two books as well: The World According to Kaleb and Britain According to Kaleb, with a third (Life According to Kaleb) on the way. These ruminations are often spoken into a Dictaphone (supplied by his publishers) during the 18 hours he spends each day alone in his happy place, his tractor cab. The books now sit on the shelves that a ten-year-old Cooper and his carpenter father put up in the local bookshop. Though, of course, one of the running jokes in the show is that he has only read one other book in his life apart from his own, and that was one of Clarkson’s.
There is another moment in the new series when Clarkson and Cooper (who are in competition with each other across the eight episodes) are working a field when they spy someone in the distance on another tractor drilling “his” field. He is Andy Cato of the electronic pop duo Groove Armada, and Cooper seems totally nonplussed, not least because he doesn’t know who or what Groove Armada is. The same probably goes for many of his near-neighbours, who include Joe Wicks, Simon Cowell, Natalie Imbruglia, David Beckham and Amanda Holden. When Cooper bumped into David Cameron (now Lord Cameron of Chipping Norton) in a local eaterie, he wasn’t quite sure who he was either. Strangely Cooper is now as famous as at least a few of these people. His appeal extends across the globe — Andy Wilman, Clarkson’s old Top Gear producer who edits the show, tells me that he rarely hears an English accent in the farm shop as tourists flock to see their agricultural idols.
Since Clarkson’s Farm aired, Cooper told his theatre audiences, he has been offered snazzy haircuts from top-level salons, perhaps to stop the constant mickey-taking from Clarkson. But he still goes to the same local hairdresser.
Brilliant moments are not always captured by the cameras and while the team may wake up with plans, farmers and the show’s fans will know that the weather often has other ideas. “Cheerful” Charlie Ireland, the farm’s land agent and adviser, does pop by a couple of times a day, as he does in the series, often to pour cold water on Clarkson’s latest schemes. But many of these moments are not filmed. Is that annoying?
“Sometimes you think, ‘Oh, that would be really good, that’d be funny on TV,’ but actually [the cameras] are not there,” Cooper says. “But you don’t say these things, to make it up for the TV. I may have taken drama in school, but I got a U in it, so actually I’m not an actor.”
Clarkson agrees: “It is [effortless] because I don’t have to pretend to be someone else. With The Grand Tour, Richard Hammond isn’t as stupid as he’s made out. I’m not as bombastic as is made out and James May isn’t quite as boring as he’s made out. And so you’re playing a caricature, you’re playing a role, you’re there to provoke and be stupid. Here, we haven’t got any of that. So we’re just ourselves. You get up and you just have to be yourself, which is incredibly relaxing. And in that regard it is effortless. Farming is not effortless. Make no mistake, the television side of it is a piece of cake because I don’t have to think, ‘Oh I’d better say something idiotic now.’”
“You do that anyway,” Cooper says.
The two bicker in exactly the same way off camera as they do on. At the press conference for the new series they quarrelled with good humour about their dogs. Cooper says Clarkson’s pair of fox-red labradors (named Sansa and Arya after Game of Thrones characters) are “posh man’s dogs” who “never do a thing he says”. Clarkson maintains that Cooper just locks his dog in his tractor cab. They also bicker about the goats Clarkson keeps. Clarkson likes their eyes and thinks they do a good job mowing his grass. Cooper thinks he should breed and slaughter them in the conventional way and sell goat meat in the farm shop.
There is a similar clash of approaches over the pigs. Cooper doesn’t get as emotional as Clarkson and Hogan when things go wrong (and they do go wrong with the pigs this series). When Clarkson holds aloft a newborn piglet, Cooper calls him a “proud parent”, which feels part mickey-take, part genuinely warm compliment — a common theme in their complex relationship.
Clarkson is learning to be more steely and is, Cooper says, actually now a “good pig farmer”. Is the younger man pleased that Clarkson has come on? Or is there a bit of him who would still enjoy showing him the ropes?
“I think there’s a bit of a proudness of teaching someone maybe triple my age … to go out and do a better job … Hopefully I’ve taught him a lot about it. But he’s taught me so much equally about the television industry.” In fact, Cooper says, he has learnt so much that he cannot watch TV now because he knows how it all works behind the scenes.
He is a voice for farmers, showing us how hard the job of people who put food on our table is, and demanding that we respect it. Cooper has arranged two bursaries of £3,000 plus a work placement for young farmers and is keen that more enter a profession where the average age is 59. When he met Sunak last May he was more interested in the PM’s hair than anything, principally because he didn’t expect much from him.
“Let’s put it this way. If someone invited me tomorrow to go to a farm … if I go to that farm and that farmer says to me, ‘Kaleb, you know what, this week I’m gonna plough that field,’ I know for a damn fact that that farmer is going to go out there and plough that field because he said he’s going do it. If the prime minister or anyone from politics goes to me, ‘Kaleb, I’m going to do this next week,’ they’re not going to do it, are they?”
While he doesn’t have much faith in our legislators making life easier for hard-pressed farmers or for supermarkets to pay them more, he must be pleased that people, especially city folk, now know about farming thanks to him, I say.
“Yeah, everyone knows what a tramline is now, right? And let’s face it, I always say this: it doesn’t matter what phone you’ve got, what car you’ve got, what house you’re living in, what matters the very most is what’s coming across your plate for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And therefore that is the most important thing to me.”
Cooper is open to offers of shows such as I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! but thinks he probably won’t have the time with all the work he has to do. Clarkson called him “easily the most entrepreneurial person I have ever met” and he is laser-focused on his ultimate goal of having a farm one day, which will have to be local, despite the “extortionate” price of land in the area.
“I want to farm here,” he says. “I don’t want to move away from my family and everything I know. This is where I was brought up and this is where I’m going to stay.”
But the show will be with us for a while. It is hugely popular — series four is being filmed and while viewing figures aren’t available, it is believed to be Prime’s most popular programme in the UK by, well, a country mile.
Cooper is engaged to his partner, Taya (mother to their three-year-old son and ten-month-old daughter), but doesn’t know when he will have time to walk down the aisle. He knows he will “have a great party”, and isn’t yet sure if Clarkson will be his best man. But one thing’s for sure, Clarkson has already found his.
The new series of Clarkson’s Farm is on Prime Video from May 3.

No Sun column this week, but the Guardian (!) has published a long interview with Clarkson: "'Dismissing global warming? That was a joke': Jeremy Clarkson on fury, farming and why he’s a changed man". Let me know if you have problems viewing it.
Clarkson's columns are regularly collected as books. You can buy them from his boss or your local bookshop.

2024.04.29 02:02 Dew_It-8 Octopath 2 with only Elemental damage Log: Day 5

Day 5: Feel the power

Ok, it’s time to get the rusted staff. I go get temenos as he’s got evasive maneuvers and evil ward. I’m travelling at night as it gives me an extra chance to flee with the extra speed from throné and the blind from Temenos may help against surprise attacks.
I ended up getting the rusted staff with ease. The random encounters weren’t actually that bad and I was able to beat all of them. I might actually grind here. I also was able to get the blessing in disguise, which should be useful later.
Anyways, I fast travelled back to gravell, knocked out the tax collector using Castti and obtained the spiritlord staff plus the armsmaster. I gave both to Partitio, as there is a dagger that boost fire damage and the spiritlord staff gives greater elemental attack than the fire starter.
I won’t be using Deliverance, as I feel like it’s still technically physical damage. It does target the physical defence, even though it’s an elemental attack, and deals staff damage, which I feel is not right for this run. I also use some unspent JP on Partitio to get him closer to deal more damage, which will definitely become relevant soon.
I then also use some JP on Agnea to get ember, boost start, and ever evasive. Eventually we will need hard worker for JP grinding, so I’m hoping I can get that early. Anyways, let’s beat up La’mani the final boss. I’m going in with scholar throné, inventor ochette, armsmaster Partitio, and merchant Agnea. Let’s do this.
Ok, La’mani time. First up is ochette who uses mahina to knock off one shield and throné uses darkest night to do the same, dealing around 1100 damage. Agnea used windy refrain dealing 321 damage whilst also having La’mani go to the back of the next turn. Partitio then uses ember for 815 damage and knocks off a shield. I also realize I didn’t turn it to night, so I’m not gonna have boosted elemental attack immediately but that should be fine as…
Next turn Agnea uses her latent power with peacock strut to increase everyone’s elemental attack. Throné then uses darknest night to break La’mani and deal 1617 damage. Partitio then fully boosts with ember dealing around 7500 damage. That’s without an elemental defence drop btw. Speaking of which, Ochette used her latent power with beastly howl to do just that and he’s also already at red health.
Throné then uses darkest night for 9999 damage and gets us the win. Wow, I knew he was gonna be easy but not this easy. Anyways, let’s do some more. Let’s try Castti's next.
Before then I decided to get some warrior skills on throné, most to get closer to deal more damage. If she’s already dealing 9999 damage, she’ll definitely be able to deal over that soon. I also get elemental augmentation on Agnea and Castti. They definitely need it for damage as they’re now lagging behind.
Anyways, for castti’s chapter I’m going in with scholar throné, hunter castti, cleric Osvald and merchant Agnea. Let’s do this.
Ok, Sandlion time. First up is throné who uses veil of darkness for 1228 and knocks off a shield. Osvald uses holy light to knock off a shield aswell dealing 700 damage. Castti uses icicle and knocks off a shield for around the same amount of damage as Osvald and Agnea uses windy refrain to deal 560 damage.
Next turn, Osvald uses advanced magic on himself in preparation for next turn. Throné uses darkest night to knock off a shield and deals 1595 damage. Agnea uses sweeping gale for 571 damage as Castti breaks it with an icicle for 713 damage.
Osvald then fully boosts and latent powers radiance dealing around 9000 damage and knocking it to yellow health. Castti then fully boosts icicle for 4250 damage and Agnea fully boosts a sweeping gale for 4481, getting me the win.
Ok, another easy victory. But what if we made the game easier? Let’s get more divine weapons. First on my list is the conquerer’s sword. This one is the easiest and probably the one you’d wanna get first due to its high physical attack power when paired with hikari.
I go to Orerush to get the pick needed from the merchant. It’s now an 80% chance, so I steal it immediately then fast travel to winter bloom to get the rusted sword from the stone.
I then grab temenos, who has both evasive maneuvers and evil ward, and head toward the empress shipwreck. I turn it to night and end up getting it on the first try, even though I was surprised by the first encounter.
Anyways, I get the 2 weapons restored and get the support skill peak performance. This increases damage significantly when at full health, which will be extremely useful going forward. I equip it to throné, Partitio, Agnea, Osvald, Castti and even hikari. I also decide to get elemental augmentation on hikari. Partitio doesn’t have enough JP for it, so he’ll need to learn it later.
I decided to then go to montwise to challenge the scholar with compound formulae. Compound formulae is an AOE fire, light and dark attack, which is very useful for hikari as he currently has no decent AOE and there’s no Alephan’s wisdom yet. Its expensive but it’s probably worth it.
On the first attempt, I was able to beat him and learn his skill. I think now it’s time for Partitio’s chapter 2. It will hopefully get him enough JP to learn elemental augmentation and should be a good showcase of our new power.
Ok, onto Garrett. First up is ochette who uses mahina to knock off a shield. Throné then uses elemental barrage, dealing around 2100 damage and knocking off 3 shields. Partitio then uses ember to deal 1824 damage and knock off another shield as Agnea uses windy refrain to bring everyone to the front.
Next turn, Agnea uses ember for 893 damage and knocks off a shield. throné uses elemental barrage breaking it for around 3400 damage. Ochette then uses beastly howl to lower elemental defence and Partitio fully boosts with ember for 9999 damage, knocking it to red health.
And next turn, throné finishes it off with a darkest night that deals 9999 damage. Wow, that was amazing. I wonder if I can beat Tera? I know that I haven’t done cateracta yet, but I kinda wanna do that last. Tera technically isn’t useable due to it dealing staff damage first, but I more just wanna see if I can do it this early.
Actually, I just thought of a better idea. What if I do glacius first? It’s the only beast of legend I can use (acta has a chance to set up counter so it’s more unreliable) and it will be very useful for Ochette. You know what, let’s do it.
First I decided to get elemental adaptation on Partitio, as he now has enough. I then got temenos on the party and set toward stormhail at night. Throné knocked out the guard, so no soothing or provoking was required. I still brought ochette and Castti along, as they’re still the lowest leveled characters.
I was able to make my way there and actually beat some encounters near stormhail due to how insane throné was with veil of darkness plus her and temenos’ talents. Now it’s time for Glacius’ route, I’m going in with scholar throné, armsmaster Partitio, inventor ochette, and merchant Agnea. Let’s do this.
The provoke at the entrance was pretty hard. The guard almost one shot ochette from one attack. But thanks to some grapes and two soulstones, I ended up winning. On the mountain I ended up getting the absolute zero bow, which is a bow that increases ice damage (Perfect for castti).
Anyways, time for Glacius. Agnea uses windy refrain first turn to get ahead and deals around 600 damage. Partitio then uses ember to deal 1615 damage and knocks off a shield. Throne then uses elemental barrage, dealing around 1600 damage and knocking off two shields. Ochette then used mahina to knock off 1 shield.
Next turn Agnea and goes for ember to knock off a shield and deals 618 damage. Partitio does the same but deals 1651 instead. Throne then uses fire ball for 926 damage and ochette uses beastly howl to break him and lower his elemental defence.
Throne then fully boosts and uses her latent power with veil of darkness at full boost and a darkest night without boosts, dealing a total of 14739 damage. Ochette then fully boosts with Mahina dealing 62 damage. Ok that was a waste. Agnea then goes for a fully boosted sweeping gale for 7404 damage, knocking him to yellow, and partito uses a fully boosted ember for 9999 damage.
Glacius then uses silver wind, knocking most of my party to red health. Throne uses elemental barrage, knocking off 2 shields. Partitio then uses ember to knock off a shield as Agnea uses windy refrain to get everyone to the front. This ended up getting glacius to red health. Ochette used a grape bunch to get everyone closer to max health.
Next turn, throne uses elemental barrage, knocking off 1 shield. Agnea and partitio use ember, knocking off 2 total. Ochette then boosts once with elemental bomb, breaking Glacius. Ok, I think one more fully boosted hit and its down. Agnea fully boosts with windy refrain… but only deals 2000 damage with no kill. Throne then uses darkest night at full boost…dealing 4100 damage which doesnt kill. Ok, Partito. You can do this. Partitio fully boosts with an ember…
Causing it to not move! Ochette then captured it and I won. Wow, that was close. I was genuinely sweating. Anyways, it also got me the guardian ice blade, which should be useful for Hikari eventually (aka once I get a spear weapon that increases elemental attack, which should be after Hikari’s or Osvald’s story).
Ok, I think that’ll be it for today. We did a lot today and I’m very proud. Tomorrow we’ll do some more chapters and maybe even get the arcanist license, who knows. Anyways, have a great day.

2024.04.27 22:22 IAmBLD I read all 40 reviews of Conquest on Metacritic and compiled their overwhelmingly positive opinions on the story. I feel like I'm being gaslit.

I read all 40 reviews of Conquest on Metacritic and compiled their overwhelmingly positive opinions on the story. I feel like I'm being gaslit.

Pre-amble Ramble:

I hope you found the title funny, but TBH I'm not going to make much of a larger point in this post. It's mostly just a collection of opinions from professional reviewers on the story. I'm not using this to say we're all wrong for hating the story, or that the reviewers are all dumb idiots for liking it. Believe me I've tried to formulate some cohesive narrative to all of this for a while now, but in the end... IDK, I just think it's neat and weird to see how overall positive - if not absolutely glowing - most of the reviews are when it comes to the story.
Personally I love Conquest but never liked the story, but I'll also mock Echoes and Fodlan's stories too so maybe I'm just an implacable old grouch. But I know several users - including one who passed away earlier this year who I would've considered something of an online friend - who really liked the story. And for the most part, I think these reviews prove that people like him were in good company actually.
They're still a buncha weirdos, though.
Oh, and it doesn't matter too much but the reviews are ordered from highest to lowest score on Metacritic - not necessarily reflective of how they liked the story, although you'll generally see more mixed opinions on the story as you descend.
Also there's not actually 40 reviews, it's like 37 or something because some of the sites no longer exist. Get clickbaited nerds.

Review Rumble:

IGN:
“Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest is a rewarding and deep turn-based tactical game with a grand story and characters I liked enough that losing them in combat really stings”
“Sometimes bad luck can steal away the most carefully planned approaches, and part of the drama of this story is how you deal with those losses.”
“What’s disappointing in a game about forming strong relationships is that the story isn’t able to acknowledge the loss of teammates in a significant way.”
Destructoid (Birthright + Conquest shared review):
“Conquest on the other hand is a more enjoyable from my perspective as a strategy veteran. It’s much more complex from the start, and offers bigger maps, more interesting objectives (such as point defense or sieges), and a more intriguing plot.”
CG Mag Online:
“I never really got to play the storyline I wanted to, and I would have to pay extra for that privilege.” [Note, the storyline they wanted was Birthright, but they did go on to say:]
“I found the plot extremely interesting as the war loving Nohr kingdom seems to be based more on Western designs in both armour and architecture, while Hoshido is clearly inspired by Japanese history. It’s almost as if developer Intelligent Systems has something to say about eastern and western philosophy.”
Atomix.vg (Google translated, BR + CQ):
“Although it has a sometimes predictable story, it offers us an epic narrative full of memorable characters with the ability to become player favorites.”
“the story manages to offer us an excellent narrative that provides it with all the sensations that would be expected from a conflict as delicate as this one: stress, fear, desperation, intrigue and even desolation. All of this together becomes more than enough reason to make the player interested in the story and its development, despite the fact that at times it becomes somewhat predictable.”
GameOver.gr (Google Translated, BR + CQ):
“The story of the game is quite satisfying and full of happy and tragic moments, while the definition of love, friendship, betrayal and even sacrifice for the greater good reaches new levels.”
“All of the above is offered in the wrapping of a wonderful and powerful story, which unfolds in 26 chapters -beyond the prologue- and which is sure not to disappoint anyone”
In GameOver.gr’s summary, the first point under “The Good” is “The story and overall writing.”
HobbyConsolas (Thanks, Google Translate):

Badly translated, but not entirely wrong tho.
GameInformer:
“It’s a dark fantasy epic filled with political intrigue that had me questioning who, and what, I was fighting for all the way through the campaign. Where Birthright forces players to answer tough questions while making tragic sacrifices for the good of a nation, Conquest is not merely content with philosophical complications. It twists the knife by making its campaign more difficult (and more complex) than Birthright’s straightforward quest.”
Vandal (Google Translated):
“Something that we really liked about this edition is how interesting its story is . It's not that its plot is going to change our lives, but it knows how to play its cards very well by putting us on the side of the "bad guys" (let's not forget that Nohr started the war and is the kingdom that seeks to conquer everything), trying to make us Let us constantly question our actions and that of our family: what if we make the wrong choice? We will see a good amount of political intrigue (although it is light years away from Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn in this sense, so do not expect anything at the level of these two installments), really hard moments and with a great dramatic charge (in the second half you will suffer one emotional blow after another) and a very convincing evolution and development of the main characters.”
USGamer, now hosted on VG247:
“Whichever mode you choose, you're admittedly in for a middling story at best. Fire Emblem has always leaned on certain tropes - heroes questing for peace, ancient sorcerers, and corrupt rulers leading otherwise good-hearted kingdoms - and Conquest is more of the same. Choosing the Nohr route puts you under the command of a rather surprised King Garon, who responds by setting out to make your life hell.”
“In these cirumstances, the protagonist comes off as the tiniest bit naive as he or she openly questions Garon's actions and is repeatedly saved from major faux pas by their savvier siblings. If this were Game of Thrones, the protagonist would lose their head in the first five minutes. Subtlety has never been one of Fire Emblem's strong suits, though, and that's fine. The protagonist's naivete doesn't dimish the tension of trying to balance Garon's deranged orders without being forced to kill everyone or enter outright rebellion. In that regard, Conquest has just a bit more nuance to it than what I imagine is the more straight-forward Birthright.”
Nintendo Enthusiast’s review can’t be reached any more, but the metacritic blurb reads: “I appreciated the very dark nature of the story. Usually, when playing through games with moral choices I usually choose the options that are “good.” The story is actually pretty hard to swallow in Conquest. The game has no problem killing off good characters, and on multiple occasions I was devastated to see the way that the story would […]”
LevelUp (google translated):
“Is this new entry up to par? We must say yes, thanks to the inclusion of new dynamics, an interesting plot that develops in multiple perspectives […]”
Twinfinite:
“While the story in Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest is largely self-contained and provides a good resolution, the game does just enough to make you wonder if there’s a larger, more powerful force at work. Of course, the answers to all loose threads lie in Revelation, the third branch of Fates. Outside of that, Conquest also does a fantastic job of painting your avatar as a morally ambiguous character as he or she struggles to take down a corrupt kingdom from the inside.”
Gamespew:
“The story is good. Very good. There is political intrigue, betrayal, all that good stuff, but where the game truly shines is in its roster of colourful characters.”
Eurogamer Italy (google translated):
“The events narrated will sometimes be disarmingly naive, but it must be said that the packaging of the animated scenes and dialogues is so careful that you won't pay much attention to it. Let's say, however, that you won't be faced with the new Game of Thrones, although the story is interesting and also contains some decent twists.”
IGN Italy (google translated):
“At first the plot was boring me, perhaps due to the slight allergy I developed for a certain type of anime, but within a few hours it won me over. I haven't gotten through the very last chapters yet, but I can say that Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest lasts a little longer than Awakening.”
3DJuegos (google translated):
“Conquest contains the most sinister story of the trilogy. This also makes it a more interesting game, but to a certain extent. The "divide and conquer" that works so many times, in the case of Fire Emblem Fates, has not completely convinced us in narrative terms. The best example is that all campaigns share an exemplary story until chapter 6. From there, when the game branches into three stories, the level of the script drops exponentially until we see the end of the game.”
“Conquest is, however, one of the games in the trilogy that best maintains the type, with a cruder tone, endowed with charismatic characters and a very outstanding production. There are many CGI animations that help us better position ourselves in the adventure. It's something the game knows how to do very well. Conversations are predominant. Sometimes interesting; on other inconsequential occasions; but they are part of the fun. It doesn't make much sense to play by tiptoeing through the lines of text, which by the way are perfectly translated into Spanish.”
[Meristation (translated)](https://as.com/meristation/2016/05/16/analisis/1463385600_155464.html)
“The result is one that is a very balanced script in the three installments , with unexpected and interesting plot twists and capable of transcending beyond a mere excuse for battles and capturing the player's interest. Without going into details so as not to spoil it, the plot of both initial paths, Conquest and Lineage, are equivalent, so that if a script twist occurs in one, in the other there is another similar one, to ensure that the end of both paths be equivalent. Whatever decision we make, our joys and torments will not change. But unfortunately this plot has only one good ending , and that is separated into a third route, Revelation. Only that path will lead us to the correct end of history, in a very criticizable decision and in which economic factors have undoubtedly weighed.”
Stevivor:
“That’s not to say that combat is all Conquest brings to the table. The overall story may actually be better than Birthright’s, or at least more layered. As I mentioned in that game’s review Nohr may seem at face value to be the obvious bad guys of the story, but it’s not so simple. Return to King Garon’s side and Corrin will do all in their power to dissuade their father from his savage inclinations, forging a path to victory via peace instead of bloodshed. Over time it becomes obvious that you’re not the only one to think that King Dad is a bit harsh – the other princes and princesses do their part to carry out the will of their father’s orders, if not the exact words. A deeper conflict is uncovered in time that makes it clear your allegiance to Nohr is not a bad thing, in and of itself.”
GodIsAGeek:
“The story of Conquest is mostly enjoyable, but lacks the “heart-breaking” decisions I was promised when researching the series. While the premise is majestic in scale, the plot feels stagnant at times, not really going anywhere, with some battles feeling like they lack in purpose in the grand scheme of things. Conquest starts strong, but it’s not until the last six or seven battles that the plot begins to fire up for the climax. Conquest raises important points about loyalty as your character struggles with the consequences of choosing a side. However, the delivery of some of these morals and plot points can get bogged down in some awkward dialogue that detracts from the overall atmosphere of the game.”
CriticalHit:
“The beauty of this story is that there’s fifty shades of grey thrown into the morality of the conflict.”
“Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest is proof that less can be more. Harder, more intense and balancing a better plot between the two games, it’s Fire Emblem at its purest.”
IGN Spain:
“From the beginning it is clear that the evil monarch is the true Evil incarnate that all Fire Emblem has and that he will be the enemy we must face regardless of the path we choose because Intelligent Systems (and ultimately Nintendo itself) cannot afford that we can be the bad guys in a game. Despite choosing to support Nohr, we are not bad, we are still the good ones and we are even better because we have chosen to stay on the evil side to try to change them. Fire Emblem always has the same principle: goodness always prevails and the bad guys can always be redeemed by the vision of a definitive kind act on the part of our avatar except (there is always one saved) the final bad guy, who sticks to his guns and grows before our goodness. In this section Intelligent Systems plays it safe again but, as we are accustomed to, they know how to create a powerful story that gives their audience what they are looking for in them.”
JeuxActu:
These guys didn’t really state any opinion on the story beyond giving a plot synopsis. Which I think is worth noting in itself.
Gamerant:
“There's little doubt that Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest delivers on every front that it promised fans, serving up an interesting narrative and tough-as-nails gameplay.”
“For those new to the series, they'll quickly find that the narrative is one of the more engaging aspects of Fire Emblem Fates. Along the way, players are introduced to new friends, loveable companions will die, and allies will turn on you. It's almost like a friendlier version of Game of Thrones, with an addictive style of gameplay that will pull gamers in for multiple hour-long sessions in any given day.”
Cubed3:
“The storyline really feels like part of something more. While the task that the protagonist and their surrogate siblings undertake of reforming Nohr is fulfilling certainly, the central conflict against Hoshido poses a lot of questions about the choices that have been made along the way. The extreme duality of the two paths and the foes you'll inevitably have to cut down really make the already few choices the game allows you to make tip the characterisation into black and white territory.”
“Given the strength the series has often had in its narrative, it's a bit of a bummer that the choices presented never move past the rather binary one near the start.”
RPGSite:
“Playing Birthright sees the Nohr cast as morally-dubious stereotypically evil villains, but in Conquest you, of course, are on their side. It's plainly obvious that some of the characters here are evil, but the case for others isn't quite so clear-cut, and in this playing Conquest actually made me retroactively appreciate aspects of Birthright more. Fire Emblem has never been about moral quandaries, but the series at last represents an interesting little wrinkle of war: that it's rarely quite so black and white as 'good guys' and 'bad guys'.”
“things like offspring are poorly justified in the narrative where in Awakening they were central, and I find none of the cast to be as memorable as Awakening's best.”
TheSixthAxis:
Again, this review doesn’t really mention the story at all.
HardcoreGamer:
“Unfortunately, while being a lengthy strategy-RPG, the story in Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest isn’t anything drool over. The plot is relatively predictable in its approach and doesn’t really reveal any major twists that you won’t see coming; you basically know who is evil from the get-go despite a number of the characters in constant denial about it.”
ZTGD:
“Conquest has players choosing to go along with their adopted family in the kingdom of Nohr. Almost immediately, I feel like I have chosen the dark side. The king of this kingdom, my adopted father, comes off as this evil dictator and ruler, which he is. It makes for an interesting story though, as we see my adopted brothers and sister begin to piece together how evil their father actually is. It ends up being a tale of espionage and betrayal, which I enjoyed a good amount.”
RPGamer:
“Fire Emblem‘s main draw has never been the narrative, and Conquest doesn’t change that, although its effort is appreciable.”
“The overall narrative is less impressive than the writers would like it to be, partially because Corrin is such an idealistic naif that it’s difficult to take the character seriously, which makes the overarching theme of doing bad things for the greater good a tough sell. The Fire Emblem tradition of having opponents felled in battle be dead is also gone, leading to conversations about how to deal with just-vanquished opponents who generally show no signs of wear after their bludgeoning. The villains are so obviously evil with no redeeming aspects that taking them seriously as multifaceted characters is a great challenge. Conquest succeeds in some of what it tries, and the support conversations bring a great deal of helpful background information to the scenario, but the writers didn’t deliver the complexity such a tale demands.”
HighDefDigest:
“While 'Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest' can stumble in a few places, namely the melodramatic plot and a few structural annoyances, this is ultimately a great SRPG that should please series fans.”
Metro:
“While the story in Conquest is just as melodramatic as Birthright it’s not as simple as just playing as the bad guys.”
“Although the storytelling is a notch above the Fire Emblem norm it’s still silly and overwrought, but to its credit the talking head cut scenes rarely go on for too long and the plot is certainly not short of incident.”
RPGFan:
I find this review hilarious because it doesn’t wait at all. The first words in the review are:
“Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest is a stellar entry in Intelligent Systems’ long-running tactics franchise. It also happens to be a game that I could hardly stand to play.
To be blunt, Conquest’s plot is one of the most prosaic and outright boring stories I’ve experienced this year. The premise is undeniably strong […] It’s unfortunate, then, that Conquest fails to deliver on this promised ethical dilemma, instead telling a story completely devoid of nuance. ”
“The motivations of Nohr’s power-mad, genocidal Emperor go little beyond “because he’s evil”, while Corrin and the rest of the Royal Family are portrayed as bastions of virtue, always merciful and doing the right thing, their conflicts with Hoshidan forces stemming entirely from misunderstandings. The Emperor and his wicked chancellor (of course) burn down villages, kill women and children, and force their POWs to fight to the death in an underground arena dungeon (the loser dies, the winner is rewarded with execution), and yet the game clumsily attempts pathos as your characters ruminate on whether or not the Emperor is truly evil. Conquest’s narrative is a disparate blend of a simplistic fairy tale plot and overly self-serious storytelling, and despite how hard it tries, it can’t have it both ways.”
M3 (google translated):
They don’t have anything to say about the story either, aside from complaining about it being split into 3.
Gamesradar:
“either version of Fire Emblem Fates will give you intricate new battles to try, interesting characters to befriend, and a satisfying story to witness. And they're even more compelling when taken together.”
“Fates' narrative excuse for gathering an adolescent army feels contrived, and I wish it would spend that time fleshing out its pre-existing secondary characters instead.”
“Speaking of getting to know one another, the world of Hoshido and Nohr never feels quite as welcoming as I'd hoped. There is a war on, but scrolling through a dry menu full of missions is spartan compared to exploring the big, branching map of Fire Emblem: Awakening. Instead, you'll spend most of your time between fights building a fort in your own little pocket dimension. Opening up this ‘Deeprealm’ as a customizable, interdimensional headquarters feels almost as contrived, though at least it provides a bunch of new ways to play with your toy soldiers (and something to show off via StreetPass and WiFi).”
That last paragraph has nothing to do with the story, it just confuses me and I'll touch on it in a bit.
Gamespot:
“Despite the caustic setup, Conquest's story is fairly middle-of-the-road, but it introduces a variety of genuinely charming characters that you ride into battle with.”
“Unremarkable plot”

Review Review:

So last time I assembled a bunch of reviewer quotes like this, it was for my Code Name STEAM retrospective, in which I had all these quotes laid out to make an argument about the game and its criticism. But like I said at the top, I don't have a real point here, and I doubt most people are gonna read all of this anyway. If you've actually read all the reviews up to this point, can you please tell me what autism diagnosis you have, because that's gotta be what I have too.
Anyway, I just have a few scattered thoughts I think are interesting:
First of all, most of the reviews are obviously very positive towards the story. Which feels wild today, doesn't it?
Of the more negative, only RPGFan really digs into it, I think. Most of the other negative takes on the story are pretty measured, saying stuff like "It's bad, but it's more interesting than most FE stories", or "It's not great but it's decent". Which I think are totally fair things to say, but even those mild statements are insanely generous given the way fans (myself very much included) discuss the story these days.
For instance, IGN spain goes pretty hard on the moral simplicity of the story, but then says "In this section Intelligent Systems plays it safe again but, as we are accustomed to, they know how to create a powerful story that gives their audience what they are looking for in them.".
Many of the negative opinions on the story were more about the structure of Fates, whereas they enjoyed the writing itself.
I think I mentioned 3 separate reviews that didn't talk about the story at all, but while these quotes aren't comprehensive, a lot of the shorter quotes you see are from reviews that only mentioned the story off-hand that one time. Probably around 1/4 of the reviews did something like this, never properly addressing the story either way.
Does this all mean we're wrong to be so negative, that we're just a bunch of fans dug so deep into overthinking the games that we've doom-spiraled into an echo chamber when it comes to the story?
Eh, maybe? But I don't think that means people who hate the story are wrong necessarily.
One loose trend that I noticed is that the European site reviews trend more negative towards the story. Is this some culture thing? Maybe, but I think the answer is simpler - Europe got the game 3 months after America, and by that point the online stink about how shitty the story was was pretty well-known, and negative word of mouth had certainly crossed the pond. I'm not saying that makes the reviews any more right or wrong, but I think it's possibly a relevant trend.
On the other hand - while I'm not here just to go "haha games journalists dumb and bad" there was of course a lot of ... dubious info I found in these reviews, which IMO really calls into question how much they were paying attention. On that note, here's another paragraph from GamesRadar:
“Admittedly, playing a game that starts at Normal and goes up to Insane does have a certain hardcore appeal. But as the relationship elements of Fire Emblem become increasingly significant, it feels like an oversight to require players who are more interested in playing Matchmaker-in-Chief than Fantasy General to suffer through tough battles. Omitting an Easy mode makes Fates seem a bit out of touch with a major source of its appeal.”
They even list " No easy mode for non-tacticians " as one of their 2 only criticisms in the big score box at the top of the page. And yeah there's technically no mode NAMED easy mode, but like, this is literally the game with Phoenix Mode in it. What the fuck did you mean by this, GamesRadar?
There were way more goofy quotes I didn't bother recording, and again I don't wanna just bash reviewers (for once), but when you see stuff like that in these reviews it's hard not to think, maybe some of these reviewers just skimmed the story, skipped cutscenes they thought weren't important, didn't stop to think about what didn't make sense, etc.
Or maybe they enjoyed something I didn't. But that seems unlikely.
Maybe the initial glowing reviews really saw something special in the story, before an over-critical internet tore everything apart. Or maybe they were all just paid shills who had to rush 3 separate full FE games to get their reviews out in time, and in their haste, only saw the abstract blur of the story, the big picture ideas that make Fates so appealing in concept to most of us before we notice the innumerable cracks in its world-building and decisions.
One aspect of the writing I think that all the reviews agreed on, though, was the characters. I can't think of a single review that disliked them, at least when it came to the playable cast and their supports. Every single negative story review I can recall said something like "The story's mid, but its carried hard by the fun cast of characters" And I think that speaks to the strengths of the series, at least.

2024.04.27 19:27 Lemmy-Historian How Mary I forced Elizabeth I to relieve Anne Boleyn’s Traumas

RELIVE HER TRAUMAS… of course an embarrassing spelling error happened in the title where I can’t fix it… I am sorry
Since you liked the excerpt, I thought I would share the whole thing with you. It's a lecture I will give at university for my students. And I will probably use it as a YouTube Script as well. This is an updated version, since many of you were very helpful in the comments to point out mistakes and general weaknesses:
How Mary I forced Elizabeth I to relive Anne Boleyn’s Traumas

I. Introduction
In the fall of 1558, Queen Mary I eventually acknowledged her half-sister Elizabeth as her rightful successor to the throne. However, the events that led to Elizabeth's ascension were a harrowing tale of betrayal, psychological warfare, treason, and cruelty. Mary made every effort to avoid naming Elizabeth as her heir until her last breath.
Mary, during her entire reign, feared Elizabeth and was convinced that she was conspiring against her. Elizabeth’s mother Anne Boleyn, who had successfully pushed Katherine of Aragon as queen aside, treated Mary terribly. Anne had instructed servants to physically and mentally punish her whenever she claimed to be the legitimate princess. Mary's father, Henry, was even worse than Anne. He would have probably executed her if she had refused to acknowledge him as the head of the church. He only allowed Mary one short visit to her mother within the last five years of Katherine's life. Now, Elizabeth, who was the offspring of these two demons in Mary's life, was old enough to threaten her.
The bitter irony is that Elizabeth was deathly scared of her half-sister, Mary, too. For as long as she could remember, Mary kept her distance or treated her outright horribly. Even though Elizabeth was Mary's heir by law, Mary never re-legitimized her. They were both daughters of Henry VIII, the man who had Elizabeth's mother executed when she was only 3 years old. Because of this, Elizabeth had to grow up without a loving and stable maternal figure in her life, and she learned she could trust no one early on.
Elizabeth's and Mary's fates were intertwined through their parents Henry VIII, Katherine of Aragon, and Anne Boleyn. The two half-sisters knew each other's weaknesses all too well: their mothers. And Mary was willing to use this knowledge to her advantage.

II. Mary’s psychological warfare against Elizabeth started long before the Tower
Mary's reign began on a positive note. She managed to oust Lady Jane Grey, who was named as the successor to her half-brother Edward VI, in just nine days. The people of London celebrated the start of her rule with great enthusiasm. An unknown resident of the Tower of London described the celebrations as follows: "I have never seen anything like it. Countless bonfires lit up the streets, people threw money out of their windows to share their joy, the bells were ringing, and the people sang in the streets." [I modernized this quote]
All of this happened before Mary even entered the capital herself. She arrived on August 3rd, 1553, accompanied by Elizabeth, around 1000 nobles, and 9000 men of the guard. There were more soldiers on the streets to secure her way into the city. According to the Chronicle of the Grey Friars, every building was decorated to celebrate her arrival and the people wore their finest clothes. While riding, Mary shouted her favorite quote from the holy book, "When God is with us, who can be against us?" [Romans 8:31]. This sentence was the core philosophy that Mary had started to structure her whole existence around.
The resident of the tower had noticed something small that marred the celebrations when the new queen and her subjects arrived. A stage had been set up, and some children were performing on it. One of them had given a short speech, but Mary had remained silent and did not respond to it.
It became a recurring pattern that she struggled to comprehend the expectations of her subjects.
Mary found herself in a difficult situation. She knew that a significant portion of the population were Protestants and were unhappy about losing power. She was certain that a rebellion would start sooner or later. The person who could potentially figurehead such an uprising better than anyone else was Anne Boleyn’s daughter Elizabeth. An additional problem was that Mary couldn't trust her government, as they had previously worked for her father, brother, and Jane. Therefore, she needed to find a new circle of trustworthy advisers.
Mary likely realized at the beginning of her reign why her half-brother Edward had named Jane as his heir instead of Elizabeth. If Jane were to fail, another person would still be available to carry on. Mary couldn't touch Elizabeth, as she was her heir by law. She also couldn't change the law, as it had legitimized her queenship as well. She had just used it to push Jane aside.
Mary tried to replace Elizabeth by favoring her longtime friend Margaret Douglas. This caused Elizabeth to lose her position as second in status, as reported by the French ambassador. Margaret was the daughter of Margaret Tudor and Archibald Douglas, and on the orders of Mary, she was given a room decorated with purple velvet and gold cloth, previously reserved for the sovereign of England, to sleep in. Mary also gifted her some lands that were originally owned by the crown.
Margaret was a Catholic and a lifelong friend of Mary, making her an ideal replacement for Elizabeth. Moreover, she was the heir presumptive of Henry VIII between 1536 and 1537, while Mary and Elizabeth were not part of the succession during that time, and Edward had not been born yet. According to Margaret’s secretary Thomas Bishop, his employer seemed to have shared Mary's hatred for Elizabeth.
In 1554, Margaret obtained chambers in Westminster located directly above Elizabeth's room. Bishop reports suggest that Margaret tormented her half-sister of the queen by throwing wooden logs, pots, and other containers to the ground, worsening Elizabeth's migraine attacks. Margaret denied these accusations, and no one, not even Elizabeth, confirmed their validity. If the accusations were true, it's hard to imagine she committed these acts without Mary's approval. The fear of being replaced and the torments Margaret inflicted on Elizabeth mirrored what Anne had to endure after Henry fell out of love with her.
Mary’s problems with Elizabeth got worse: Several powerful and influential men expressed an interest in marrying Elizabeth. However, Mary's advisors intervened each time, possibly under her orders. One example was Edward Courtenay, whose match with Mary's lady-in-waiting, Jane Dormer, was pushed by Bishop Stephen Gardener to make it impossible for the Earl of Devonshire to marry the queen's half-sister. If such a couple had produced an heir, their child would have been third in line for the throne. Additionally, the couple would have united significant resources.
Mary became increasingly concerned about the idea of Elizabeth marrying an English noble. So, she decided to take the official route to change the succession. It didn’t even come to a vote. Elizabeth was very popular with the people – and parliament rejected the wish of the queen outright. This was almost without precedent: Normally, every monarch got the right to name his successor. The last time a king had to accept an heir, he didn’t want, was when Henry VI had to confirm Richard of York. Mary’s relationship with parliament was strained – which was normal for a monarch but not for Mary who longed for appreciation and confirmation.
And the Queen’s fears regarding her half-sister seemed to manifest when Mary sought marriage to the Spanish Prince Philip – a staunch Catholic. Apart from Mary nobody loved the idea – to put it mildly. Not even the groom was thrilled about it. He saw it as a political alliance and nothing more. One of his servants should write that he admired his master, cause Mary wasn’t nice to look at and couldn’t give him any pleasure. A man named Thomas Wyatt opposed the marriage plans so strongly that he decided to take up arms against the Queen. And suddenly a match between Elizabeth and Courtenay became a real threat to the queen.

III. Wyatt’s rebellion
Mary feared her half-sister would undo her catholic restoration. And she had only one legal way to remove Elizabeth as her successor: If she had a legitimate child, he or she would inherit the crown. For this reason, she started to look for a husband. Philip wasn’t the first idea. Two names were propounded prominently within England: Courtenay and Reginald Pole. The latter was a cardinal, which would have caused problems. However, the example of Cesare Borgia 50 years earlier demonstrated they would have been surmountable. But Mary’s cousin Emperor Charles V intervened. He wanted Mary to accept his only legitimate son Philip as her husband. The Queen was thrilled with the idea after seeing a portrait of Philip painted by Titian.
The House of Commons and even Mary's own Lord Chancellor Bishop Stephen Gardiner protested and petitioned that Mary should seek a match with an Englishman. They feared that England would become just another part of the vast Habsburg Empire, which Philip, and his possible sons with Mary, would inherit one day.
Mary and Philip had to accept a compromise that they both hated. Months later, Parliament passed the Act for the Marriage of Queen Mary to Philip of Spain, which stated that the Habsburg heir would be treated as a co-monarch. He would enjoy all of Mary's titles and honors as long as she lived. Every official document would have to be dated with both of their names, and Parliament would be called under both of their names. Coins would be minted with both of their faces. However, England wouldn't be obliged to support Philip's father in any war, and Mary would still be the higher authority. Even so, they co-reigned, and in private life, Mary had to obey him as it was customary, she was still the ruling monarch.
Mary took steps to dispel the notion that Philip would only be a king consort. She had laws passed in England and Ireland to make it high treason to deny Philip's royal authority. The marriage treaty was officially presented to the queen's privy council on December 7th, 1553. According to the Tower resident, the general public was not informed about the marriage plans until November. It is likely that Mary only announced her intention to marry Philip after she knew he would accept. Although Philip had been married before, the couple did not have any healthy children.
Around the same time, Mary's spies reported that new visitors had started to visit Elizabeth's household in Hertfordshire. Elizabeth had left the court early after Mary's coronation on October 1st, 1553, in which she had played a ceremonial role alongside Anne of Cleves.
Every one of Elizabeth’s new guests despised the idea of the Spanish marriage and wanted to take action against it. Among these conspirators was Sir William Loe, one of Elizabeth's servants, who played a key role in the group. Loe's family had previously supported Lady Jane Grey, who was still alive during this time. Therefore, the half-sister of the queen very likely knew that something was going on. Elizabeth chose to stay out of the conspiracy and did not actively participate. She was aware of Mary's spies monitoring her movements and knew that one wrong move could put everything at risk.
Other key conspirators included Sir Thomas Wyatt the Younger from Kent, Edward Courtenay, Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk, as well as Sir Peter Carew. While some describe Courtenay as the last living Plantagenet due to his great-grandfather being Edward IV, this is not entirely accurate as members of the Pole family were still alive. Mary had ordered Courtenay's release from the Tower the year before. Therefore, his involvement in the conspiracy must have been especially painful for the queen.
Wyatt was a skilled and charismatic soldier who was chosen to lead the rebels' main force, consisting of 3000 men. The insurrectionists planned to replace Mary with Elizabeth and have her marry Courtenay to rule together and restore Protestantism. This was Mary's worst fear.
Initially, the plan was to start four different uprisings on March 18th, 1554 to overwhelm the royal forces. Additionally, the French fleet was supposed to prevent Philip from reaching England. However, the date had to be moved up because the wedding preparations were progressing much faster than expected.
The uprisings were scheduled to begin on January 25th, but they only happened at the Welsh border at first. Mary requested Elizabeth to come to London, but she refused, citing sickness. She was scared of being arrested. This fear was not baseless, as English monarchs had a track record of imprisoning those who could potentially challenge their rule.
Mary's government responded by immediately sending forces to stop Wyatt, who had already begun his military operation. To the Queen's horror, her soldiers defected to the rebel side as soon as they saw them. This created an open path to London. Mary's finest moment as Queen came on February 1st when she walked to the guild hall with her scepter and coronation ring. She climbed a flight of stairs to a stage and addressed the people directly. Mary promised not to marry Philip if parliament voted against it, emphasizing that she was already married to England. She made a point of showing her coronation ring to demonstrate her commitment to ruling for the good of the people. It is worth noting that different versions of her speech were recorded, and for example John Foxe does not include her promise about marriage. However, his account is based on a second-hand source.
Whatever Mary’s actual words were, they worked: Wyatt needed the support of the citizens of London. Otherwise, royal forces in such a number (and sufficiently loyal to Mary) would arrive soon enough to prevent him from fulfilling the plan. When he tried to enter the capital, the people started to fight him. And the guard in the city didn’t just surrender. The main force of the rebellion crumbled to dust at the gates of London in February. The tables had turned. And Elizabeth was up to relive the trauma of her mother.

IV. Elizabeth is a prisoner in the Tower
Wyatt surrendered on February 8th and was immediately interrogated under torture. Even before he named Elizabeth, Mary had summoned her half-sister once again. But this time, the queen was better prepared and sent her physicians with her envoys in case Elizabeth would feel too sick to travel again. The half-sister of the Queen once more refused to come to London, citing an illness. However, Mary’s physicians ruled that, although the illness was real, it wasn’t severe enough to prevent her from coming to London.
Elizabeth was then transferred to Ashridge House, located 30 minutes north of London, where her interrogations began [Domestic State Papers]. She was pale and dressed completely in white. Lord Howard, Sir Edward Hastings, and Sir Thomas Cornwaleys reported back to Mary on February 11th that the princess was willing to return to court and repair her relationship with the Queen and only asked to be lodged further from the water than the last time. Elizabeth asserted her innocence concerning the insurrection.
Mary was unable to deal with Elizabeth immediately due to a lack of time. The Queen finally permitted the execution of Lady Jane Grey, whom the rebels saw as a potential alternative to Elizabeth. Although London was under control, the rest of the country was still in disarray. On February 24th, Thomas Culpepper, an older half-brother of the one who had an inappropriate relationship with his cousin Catherine Howard, reported to Mary that there were still insurrections occurring throughout England in opposition to her Spanish marriage.
In response to this, the crown reacted harshly. Captured rebels were executed, and their leaders were subjected to severe interrogations. One day after Culpepper's report, Mary's secretary John Bourne informed her that he had "worked hard to make Sir Thomas Wyatt confess concerning the Lady Elizabeth and her servant, Sir William Loe" [I modernized this quote]. The accused confessed, implicating the queen's half-sister and stating that Sir James Croft, one of the rebel leaders, had more information. Croft was one of the men who received a pardon later on and was treated favorably by Elizabeth during her reign.
Mary ordered the arrest of her half-sister. She should be held in the Tower. The walls were closing in on the 21-year-old princess quickly. Elizabeth panicked and wrote the Queen. The document referred to as the "Tide Letter" showcases Elizabeth's intelligence in multiple ways. On the second page of the letter, lines are drawn across the blank space above her signature to prevent the insertion of false information. Additionally, she wrote the letter deliberately slowly, ensuring that by the time it was completed, the evening low tide had passed, and boats couldn’t safely pass London Bridge. This bought her an extra day outside of the Tower. Thus, the document is called the "Tide letter.”
The last line of the letter, just above her signature, reads: "I humbly crave but only one worde of answer from yourself". She never received it. The next day, she was taken to the Tower of London, arriving at 10:00 in the morning. Although rumors circulated that she had entered the complex through Traitor's Gate, this was not true. Instead, she had used a drawbridge for entry, and upon arrival, some soldiers knelt in front of her. This means that she probably entered the Tower via the Private Postern Gate, which is today’s Byward Tower – just like her mother 17 days before her execution. She was brought into the very same lodgings Anne was held in. They were comfortable and matched her rank, but they were without any question psychologically torturous all the same.
Upon entering the Tower, the resident reported her words to the soldiers saying, "Oh Lord, I never thought I would come here as a prisoner. I pray that you, my good friends and fellows, will bear witness that I come as no traitor, but as a faithful woman to Her Majesty the Queen. I am willing to take my death for this." [I modernized this quote]
Shortly after, she asked the Lord Chamberlain if all the armored soldiers would be present because of her, but he denied it. However, Elizabeth did not believe him and insisted that they were there for her. She also mentioned that there was no need for them, as she was nothing but a weak woman. After she was taken to the Queen's lodgings, the Lord Chamberlain and the Lord Treasurer locked the doors tightly. They consulted with each other and, with quote “weeping eyes”, decided to only follow the exact commission given to them, considering that Elizabeth was the daughter of a king and the sister of the Queen.
John Gage served as the Lord Chamberlain and Constable of the Tower during Elizabeth's imprisonment. William Paulet, who had previously served as a judge in the trials of John Fischer, Thomas More, and Anne Boleyn, was appointed by Mary to deal with Elizabeth in the Tower. Despite Paulet's involvement in the trials of Elizabeth's mother, she had a good relationship with him.
As a prisoner, Elizabeth had the privilege of going for walks, and she was able to talk to other prisoners. The road from the Bell Tower to Beauchamp Tower, which ran alongside the Royal Mint, became known as "Elizabeth’s Walk". Although it is unclear how much she knew about events outside of the Tower, she likely suspected that her life was in danger. Elizabeth was interrogated several times, and she complained bitterly about being forced to justify her movements from one of her houses to another. Her accusers had found a letter from rebels warning her to avoid London on the day of the insurrection, but they did not explain the reason. Elizabeth responded that she would comply with the warning.
Mary initially wanted Elizabeth executed when she was imprisoned in the Tower. Gardener and the imperial ambassador supported this view, arguing that Mary's rule could never be secure as long as Elizabeth was alive. However, Charles V intervened, concerned about Elizabeth's popularity, and advised Mary to gather proof before taking any action. Mary, who considered Charles her "real father," heeded his advice. She tasked her "specialists" to find evidence and/or extract it from the rebels through torture. Mary's propagandists also worked to undermine Elizabeth's popularity by connecting her to the rebellion. Elizabeth was interrogated again, and Mary's Lord Chancellor Gardener personally got involved.
As the anniversary of Anne Boleyn's execution neared, Elizabeth knew that whatever her fate would be, it would reveal itself on this day. On the morning of May 19th, the Constable and his Lieutenant awaited her, accompanied by guards. Around 70 years later, Peter Heylyn, one of the future Charles I's lecturers, would describe Gage as a bitter enemy of Elizabeth. Mary had made her decision.
Let’s continue this next week...

2024.04.27 10:30 No_Calendar_5520 Anonymity guide for everyone who's trying their best to expose the cheating scandals

Sorry for writing this long post, but had to in anger against NTA. Please read this properly and spread the word!

Recently a lot of people here on the subreddit are going out of their way to expose the cheaters, which is good. These scumbags need to be exposed, and even trolled. A lot of us have spent 2 whole years preparing for this exam, sacrificing a lot of things which we love to do to crack this exam and to get a seat in a good college. And there is also a group of cheaters who have studied nothing and managed to get good marks by copying from others, bringing in a FUCKING PHONE to the exam centre WITHOUT THE INVIGILATORS NOTICING. This is a serious threat to all our efforts, hardwork and sacrifices. Meanwhile NTA hasn't yet taken any action on the cheater Bhasava Reddy (whom let's for this post refer to Bhosda Reddy, cause why not). NTA being too lenient towards these things feels like NTA peeing on your face cause you didn't cheat. Now you get punished for being a good student, for not cheating, for studying hard, for sacrificing 2 years for this god damn exam. I want to say thank you to everyone here who is exposing this cheating scandal and talking about it, sharing the word of it and how bad we feel after getting fucked without consent by NTA. Keep up the work, please!

Also it is very important for you to be safe while sharing this scandal on the subreddit and any other place. Do you think the institutes who are paying 18+ crores on paper to politicians in the name of electoral bonds are going to spare you for exposing them? Heck, spending 5+ lakhs on hiring a hitman to kill you won't be a lot of money for them if you are very loud about the matter. Also no one's even going to consider the possibility of you being murdered, due to corruption, it might just be shown as a death due to vehicle crash, or something very unrelated, thanks to corruption in this country. See https://www.reddit.com/JEENEETards/comments/1cdt5jj/this_coaching_has_bought_just_electoral_bonds/ for context of how the Bhosda Reddy's institute bought 18+ crore worth of electoral bonds. Also this 18+ crore is on paper, good luck finding out how much was actually paid through other illegal means.

This is for the context of why you need to keep yourself anonymous while exposing these scumbags, now let's talk of how to keep your anonymity while exposing them.

1. Use Tor Browser

With Tor you can visit almost every website anonymously, there are a lot of guides on how to use Tor available online, most of them are filled with darknet bullshit. But the Tor devs have actually designed it for activists, and protesters like us to keep our anonymity while exposing others. Checkout https://www.torproject.org/ to get a brief intro on what the Tor Project does and how it helps you be anonymous on the internet. Also please do not use shady VPNs, or even paid ones like Proton or Mullvad cause they single-handedly can reveal your identity if the government threatens them to do so (usually they fight back but better be safe than sorry). Unlike VPNs, Tor has 3 different randomly picked onion routers (ORs) which relay your traffic so it should be pretty much resistant to any sort of adversarial attacks and it has proved to be so. Edward Snowden, the whistle-blower who exposed America's spying programmes used exclusively Tor for his operation before coming out in public. I am not going to spend a lot of time explaining how Tor is better than VPNs, proxies and all those technologies, but will just recommend it. Please don't use your day-to-day web browser for exposing these liars, use exclusively Tor. Also you can choose to use public WiFi when accessing Tor, but that should not be needed as you are already using Tor.

TLDR for the above para: Tor should reliably mask your true IP address from websites.

Also I would recommend to set the Tor Browser security level to "Safer", many sites do not work with "Safest" set as JavaScript is disabled (the default is Standard which is not safe enough if you ask me). Also please read the FAQs on https://support.torproject.org/faq/ before proceeding any further. Some shitty sites also block Tor users from accessing their site, in that case you can also rely on the Internet Archive to see what content is on the site (IA does not block Tor users). If the website URL is "https://example.com/path", just add a "https://web.archive.org/" in the beginning. The new URL should become "https://web.archive.org/https://example.com/path"

If you are a advanced user you may also choose to use Whonix (https://whonix.org) over using Tor Browser directly on your machine (for the ultra-paranoid)

2. Get yourself a new identity

It is very important to have a entirely different identity while exposing Bhosda Reddy and likes. DO NOT LOG INTO YOUR EXISTING REDDIT ACCOUNT OR ANY OTHER SITE WHEN USING TOR. Create a new email address from sites like https://www.guerrillamail.com/, https://cock.li. Make sure you do use random words for your email, do not use your pet's name or include any other interests in your email address. An example of a random email address you can get 'fuckyounta@example.com'. Keep away from email providers that want you to verify using another existing email or phone number, DO NOT USE GMAIL AT ALL COSTS! After this strictly use only this email address for any exposing related tasks, and not your existing identity. I would also recommend not to use your existing social accounts during the time you are in this new identity. Remember, this investigator Teju should have no idea who TejuuuOP is (just giving an example, I am not u/TejuuuOP but another random guy on internet who doesn't even have a Reddit account on his name and has always used throwaways).

After getting a email, make sure you remember the password. I would recommend using passphrases as they are easy to remember and too long for anyone else to crack. An example of good passphrase "TejuuuOP dickriders love $uckIng his d#cK". Ofcourse don't write something so common, but try to come up with a sentence which you can remember easily add a few special characters and it should be hard for anyone else to crack. Do not include any information about you in the passphrase (this should be pretty obvious but let's still write it down for the dumb people). Also I would recommend not storing your password in your usual password manager or a text file (which is a dumb idea tbh) as it leaves a trace of your identity on your machine.

Get a new Reddit account, register using your email address which you just created. Also use another password, don't for god's sake reuse the same password. Don't use the Reddit's onion site (ends with .onion) as the captcha is broken on the onion site.

Now this identity should be completely isolated from your true identity, you can post anything anonymously using this new identity. Make sure you use this power responsively (with great power comes great responsibility). Don't tell anyone about you having an alt Reddit account at any cost, not even your best friend or whatever.

3. Browsing Reddit anonymously.

Do not use your newly created Reddit username to browse anything which you usually do. DO NOT EVEN USE IT TO BROWSE ANYTHING. Instead try to use this identity to only post when you need to, login only when you want to post. Also Tor Browser will forget everything when you close the browser, so if you mistakenly browse funny or memes before logging in, just close all tabs, then close the browser and then reopen it. Also Reddit might flag your account and give you mysterious login errors as you are using a proxy to browse the site, in that case just wait for a few hours and try again, most likely you will be able to login then. If not create a new email address and repeat.

You can also use alternative Reddit frontends like libreddit or redlib to browse Reddit anonymously and choose to login only when necessary. Note that you can only view posts using these frontends and not post content using it.

4. Staying anonymous while spreading the word

Do not reveal anything about yourself, do not reveal your pet's name, do not reveal your interests about anything (like do you like football, cricket whatever) under any circumstances. Also do not even reveal your rank even after rounding off as it still can pinpoint the actual person very easily who posted the thing (although I don't think anyone here is competent to even do that cause we have drained those brains to America already). Keep sending this topic to alternative subreddits like india, unitedstatesofindia, indiasocial and similar India and study related subreddits so that atleast someone from mainstream media picks it up. Unfortunately I don't think any of these news analysis people is going to pick this up as 18+ crore in EBs, you don't want to upset both the opposition and the ruling party, so we have no option to pressurize atleast someone to pick this up.

If you are posting any video/image evidence (could vary from confessions of students as well as invigilators, or any other evidence) which you obtain through any means, make sure you strip the metadata of that video before posting. Metadata may include a lot of info about you like the exact geographical location of where the video/image was taken, the device information (camera model, software info which can further reveal a lot about you) used to capture the video. If you are using Whonix, it includes an application for that called as "Metadata cleaner" it should strip most info for you. Do not use any online website for this purpose, prefer using a tool that runs offline. https://superuser.com/questions/556469/how-can-i-remove-the-exif-tags-metadata-from-several-images-at-once has some good suggestions. Note: that the metadata cleaning is going to helpful only if the accused isn't aware that they are being filmed or have been filmed, if they know then they probably also know who you are.

Also since this account is anonymous, you can share the results of cheaters without any fear of you getting doxxed, so do that. Go as far as you can to expose these cheaters. I would love to see news with headlines like "Liar liar, pants on fire" with these Bhosda Reddy and likes getting actual fire on their pants.

Also if you happen to mistakenly share anything you didn't want to share which reveals any info of yours, the best you can do is delete the post and start with a new email and new account. Remember even if you delete the post, it likely has already been read by someone which could be the institute who wants you dead.

5. Closing words

I don't think NTA is going to do anything unless we pressurize them to do something. I want this topic to be trending on every social media site ever: Reddit, Instagram, Youtube, Xitter (X, formerly Twitter). Unfortunately only on Reddit you can actually be anonymous while posting anything. Instagram, YouTube, and Xitter will require a phone verification to post anything which reveals your identity to these corporations (which means no anonymity). I would recommend against sharing anything about the cheating scandal on these sites as they will give your info to the government very easily if they are asked to do so, and with the 18+ crore electoral bonds with the institute has bought for political parties, it'd be fair to assume that the netas will be favouring these institutes no matter opposition or ruling party (cause election funding why not). I think it is our duty to make sure that Bhosda Reddy and the likes get the punishment they deserve. These scumbags need to be exposed and humiliated like how they have humiliated our hardwork and sacrifices.

Also if you are posting any video evidence online, you should be ready to be a witness (in court or whatever) in case it becomes necessary. So be mentally prepared for that. Our enemies are strong, but we are strong together too. Every JEETard and NEETard is with you, so be strong and we will win this war together.

Satyamev Jayate!

And if anyone at NTA if you are reading this, NTA ki mkc! Saale invigilator kya fook rahe hai in sab centers me? Jo bhi invigilators ki presence me cheating hua hai un par bhi strict action hona chaahiye. Teen ghante jhak maare bina reh nahi sakte kya? Aur jo banda phone leke gaya tha centre me, uspar bhi abhi tak action nahi hua hai lagta hai. Teen ghante tak tum log sab candidates ko monitor nahi kar sakte toh kyu exist karte ho tum log? You are playing with the lives of lakhs of students by doing this! Thousands of brilliant minds who are going to be the future of India are loosing hope due to this, killing their motivation to do anything for the country!

WE WANT THE EXAMS TO BE CONDUCTED IN FAIR MANNER, WHICH MEANS STRICT INVIGILATION, NO CHEATING! PERIOD!

2024.04.26 08:27 DepartureScared8823 Microsoft Ecosystem

Looking for a bit of advice from the hive mind.
I work in a busy office environment at a University.
My job entails managing a team of around 25 people, progressing projects (long/short term), developing colleagues, fixing problems, communicating with faculty colleagues.
We use Microsoft 365 for everything; Teams, Outlook, Loop, To Do, Planner and OneNote.
Because the tasks and information, that I need to capture, come to me via different methods such as mid-video call, via Teams Chat or in email (etc etc), I find things become messy.
I have tasks in Loop, project tasks in OneNote, some in Planner or To Do.
I’ve set up my own Second Brain in OneNote. However, I struggle to create a watertight “flow” to make Second Brain’ing a success.
The OneNote I’ve set up was perfect to start with but needs way too much maintenance to keep it working its best (set up using PARA method).
Because of the integration with Microsoft 365 and due to GDPR concerns, moving to a 3rd party option isn’t really viable.
Any advice or points would be appreciated. Eg is OneNote best for this? Should I opt for something simpler? Am I missing a trick?
Thanks!

2024.04.26 05:14 CrankBot Spyderco Native 5 LW DLC Seconds, Civivi Bo, Benchmade CLONE, CobraTec OTF

Timestamp & Native photos
Edit: I am going to sleep soon, will reply in the morning!
Open to offers, PP G&S, all values include USPS CONUS shipping. Willing to discount on bundles. Make me an offer!
Trade interests:

Spyderco Native 5 LW DLC Seconds

SV 90 - photos / video
S30V DLC blade SECONDS blade, swapped to a grey handle from a Maxamet Native. I received this from the swap, so at least second owner. It appears to be factory edge and mostly unused. The only real sign of wear appears on the pocket clip which I suspect may have come from a different donor when the handle swap was done. I have pocketed it around the house, flicked it a bunch and cut paper. The lock pin protrudes a tiny bit more on the clip side.

Civivi Bo

SV 30 - photos / video
Nitro-V steel DLC (or whatever their coating is called.) Received from the swap, pocketed a couple times around the house and flicked it a bunch but otherwise unused by me. I did touch up the tip edge which I attempted to capture in photo. Perfect centering. Flicks open smooth. The spine has a couple light scratches that I just noticed while taking photos. Comes with an aftermarket deep carry clip. Will ship in a Civivi taco.

SOLD CLONE Benchmade Full Immunity

SV 20 - photos / video
Received this in a swap bundle. It has all of the branding including the box however the box got smushed in shipping. Knife looks fine though. A little wear on the lanyard cord but otherwise appears like new. Flicks open, solid lockup and good centering.

SOLD CobraTec OTF modded

SV 25 - photos / video
D2 steel. Looks like it belongs in an 80's action movie. This was modded by the previous owner including acid etching and rad distressed paint job. It's a bit hard to deploy but fires 100%. Little lube would probably help. Has been sharpened. The previous owner stated that they replaced one of the lock springs. Two of the clip screws are particularly buggered but still removable with care. The "distressed" paint job appears to have some wear on the butt and corners but it all adds to the distressed look. Would make a fun user but I don't want to freak out my coworkers.

2024.04.25 21:23 No-Mango4300 Someone have stolen my parcel and seller doesn't want to refund me.

My laptop was stolen and I am angry at Shopee
Hi everyone,
I've been an avid shopee user for 8 years now. I ordered a total siguro of 700k++ na and all PC parts came from either Gameoneph, Itworld, asus rog store, basta nasa shopeemall.
Now, dumating na yung kinakatakutan ko. Bato bato ng aquarium yung dumating sa akin and naiiyak ako kasi hard earned money ko to. I managed to save up 50k for a laptop para sa gaming and basic editing pero wala bato ang nakuha ko and the seller disputed my return.
I don't know who did it pero nakakastress na at tinethreaten pa ako nung rider na nagsinungaling ako at susugurin daw ako.
Ang dami na nangyari na parang ayoko na ilaban to and now I am fearing for my life. I don't have convo with the rider dahil nag call siya and naalipungatan lang ako galit na galit siya sa akin.
In my defense, I sent all cctv footage I have videos and photos sa phone ko. I didn't once mentioned na it might be the riders fault pero wala kasi siya nilagay na proof of delivery and di siya tumawag sa akin. Nalaman ko na siya yung rider kasi nag match yung pinangcall niya sa akin doon sa nasa app.
Masama loob ko sa shopee dahil nawalan na nga ako ng item wala ako magamit na laptop for work since nakahold pera ko sa kanila. This whole fiasco started nung april 18 and now it's april 25 at wala pa din ako refund tapos tinethreaten pa ako nung rider nakakabwisit. Should I escalate this to DTI? Wala gusto managot sa kanila.
Updates:
April 18 - filed for refund with full evidences of cctv footage ng unboxing and sent my phone captures of the product as well.
April 19 - Seller Disputed and sent evidenced that they have packed the item. (Didn't show if nareceive ng courier.)
April 20 - was given an update by shopee that they are still investigating. CS is active in replying
April 21-22 - CS is replying pa and that they are in touch with flash express
April 23 - tumawag yung rider ng flash express sa akin na galit na galit at ayaw ilet go nagsisinungaling daw ako at susugurin ako dito.
April 24 - filed a report sa police because of the threats i am receiving sa rider ng flash and also complained to shopee agent pero hindi na sila nagrereply sa akin. (Not sure bakit galit na galit siya i just filed for a refund dahil wala nga akong laptop na nakuha.)
April 25 - asked for updates but shopee is not responsive anymore. Kapag kinausap naman yung CS, puro empty promises na itatry nila managot yung seller and ang Estimated time was April 21 pa. The recent chat I have was they are still investigating pa daw.

2024.04.25 16:36 Adventurous-Long-193 Why do Filipinos love to film without consent?

(Not sure if that should be the right tag)
I don't know about other countries but why do people love to film strangers without consent? Nakakairita. Kaya pag lumalabas ako, nako conscious tuloy ako baka mahagip ako ng mga vlogger kuno.
I've been scrolling through Tiktok and I watched several videos of pinoys taking videos/pictures of strangers.
1) Kakakita ko lang. Umiiyak sa morgue(?) yung lalaki, namatayan ata ng kamag-anak, vinideohan ng creator, I doubt kamag-anak niya yung umiiyak. Imagine, you are at your most vulnerable moments tapos makikita mo nalang sarili mo nagtrend sa social media?
2) Kahapon may nakita akong post ulit na pinicture-an yung maglolo na nagbibilang yung lolo ng barya para makalaro ang apo niya sa Kidzoona ba yun, basta yung palaruan ng mga bata, then maybe the creator treated them food, i did not read the caption. Yung picture na pinost is kita yung face ng bata. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I dont think she/he posted it with consent kasi stolen lahat ng shots.

2024.04.25 08:33 MyMomPickedThisName Looking for suggestions on equipment for off-site/mobile podcasts and new studio space.

I have been tasked with outfitting a podcast studio from scratch. We will begin recording two podcasts out of the studio but will eventually host at least another two podcasts out of the space. Both current podcasts have multiple episodes but one (mine/Podcast1) has been a passion project and the other (othePodcast2) has garnered sponsorship and has potential for a much wider reach due to the content and the hosts. Podcast2 has graciously taken podcast1 with to open this studio since I can handle their post production.
Previously, PC1 recorded in a conference room that was turned into a makeshift studio with a Rodecaster II and 3-4 mics. Video was included with the podcast where I learned how to do post production in Adobe Premiere Pro. This podcast was my co-host and I and usually one other guest. We would utilize three cameras; one on the two of us, one wide shot, and one on the guest. This will continue to be our main podcast setup moving forward. PC1 might need to have a remote podcast option with guests online.
Previously, PC2 recorded in a local radio station with no video and almost no actual post production to speak of. It seems audio files were uploaded without much editing. Typically, PC2 had 2 hosts, 1 radio station employee, and a guest. This will continue to be the in-studio setup (minus the radio station employee) for PC2 but Podcast2 will need to have the ability to record audio and video out of the studio in the future.
The list of equipment thus far
• 3x – Sony ZV1 Cameras
• 3x – Sony ZV1 dummy batteries
• 3x – JOILCAN Tripods
• Rodecaster II
• 4x – headphones TBD
• 4x – Shure SM7B Microphones
• 4x – Appropriate mic boom arms
• Nanlite 60B II LED Spotlight
• Nanlite Para 90 Softbox
• Light stand TBD
• Going to build some mobile acoustic paneling
• MacBook Pro with M2 Max chip
• Adobe Premiere Pro
My question is about mobile/off-site audio and video capturing. Podcast2 will have some interviews at conferences and potentially busy, non-studio spaces. I was thinking of getting the RODE wireless Pro microphones to pair with the ZV1 cameras. I would get two sets of 2 transmitters for four total microphones. This seems to be one of the best options as I can control sound editing in post. I think that’s a better option than using a Zoom H6 with four XLRs/handheld mics.
I am also wondering if we don’t have access to an outlet, is there a different portable battery that can hook up to the ZV1 camera? I don’t want to limit interviews to an hour, which is what battery life indicates is normal. I’ve seen external batteries like the SmallRig V Mount but that was paired with a Sony fx30. I'm not sure if that external battery can be used with the ZV1.
There might be travel tripods in the future but we will plan on utilizing what we’ve got to start with unless there’s an amazing budget friendly travel tripod you can suggest.
Any insight with the off-site interview equipment would be greatly appreciated as well as any other in-studio equipment I might be missing.

Hi everyone. I've been having creative juices flowing lately and i've been writing in the morning before i get burned out from being at a computer all day. I hope you enjoy. It's what many of you have been waiting for since somewhere around chapter 5. lol.

_________________________________________________________________________________________
Inside Black Hole, everyone had gathered in one of the gathering rooms. There were members from all of the races except the Naxun who was joined remotely on a voice only feed to protect her eyes.
“What did you find out about the whether or not the slaver races know other languages?” Z’natla asked.
“Yes. Lieutenant Commander Fennis took me in to see one of the Imperia that were captured. I used Spanish first and it didn’t look like it understood me very well. There are some words that are similar in both English and Spanish, so it’s possible to figure out a little here and there. I then tried a few phrases I know in Italian from my fiancé and his uncle, but I didn’t pick up on any understanding from it. I then tried Morse Code and there was no understanding at all. We tried a Vesili too with the three languages and it definitely knew Spanish and kind of understood the Italian, but was completely confused with Morse Code.”
“What is Morse Code?” A Drala asked.
“It’s a dead language outside of the military. It used to be used to communicate with remote places before telephones were invented as well as before they became more common. Even now, the military uses it only when we need to communicate covertly.”
“Then that should be the language used in the transmission to your Commander Morris.” The Naxun replied and everyone else agreed.
Mira appreciated that they didn’t ask what the language sounded like or how to decode it, or even for a demonstration. Instead, they worked to find out how to ensure keeping it from being heard by anyone else except the target to the best of their ability.
A Drala spoke up after a few hours. “Ok. We have a means to guard a transmission of about 2 minutes so that only the target receives it. Any longer and it is likely to get intercepted, and it will get iffy as we get closer to 2 minutes. It will only be one way, so we won’t be able to receive a response. Think about your message and try to keep it short. We will also need to be close to your Earth to ensure the message stays guarded.” She pulled up a model of Mira’s solar system and pointed to Mars. “We can transmit from here.”
“Thank you. Now I just have to figure out how to say what I need to say.” Mira replied to everyone. There were many smiles and the nocturnal species sleepily headed to their own quarters or guest quarters. They had only been able to stay awake so long due to sleeping during their waking time to make up the time.
________________________________________________________________
The ships all stayed at the outpost for another 2 days while The Meteor’s crew was replenished, the dead were taken out to be taken back to their families, and the prisoners were taken into custody. Mira even got a tour of the outpost by a group from all the different crews including Drixa. As Drixa had said, there wasn’t much to see, but they had what Mira would have referred to as a general store and a post office where you can send physical items back to your family, or if they knew you were headed to the outpost, they may have things waiting for you.
Soon enough, it was time to head back out towards Earth. In all of this time, there was never another communication from Commander Morris. Cherrin, a Drala technician, even tried to increase Mira’s ship’s ability to receive messages, but it wasn’t enough.
Mira wracked her brain for how to say everything she needed to say that could be said in Morse Code within 2 minutes. She headed back to The Meteor and then to her quarters to think about the message she would send.
She first wrote it out and then tapped it out to see how long it would take to “say” the message. She settled with, “CO Morris. CH Rodriquez abducted by friendly aliens. Alpha Centauri home to slaver aliens. Slavers entrenched on earth. Meet at Howland Island in 2 days.” The fastest she could tap it out was about a minute and a half, maybe a little longer. Unfortunately, it was as pared down as she could make it.
She chose Howland Island for a couple reasons. Mainly because, it was in the middle of nowhere, and it was completely barren so you could see if more people were brought than was necessary. She expected an aircraft carrier, but that meant it would have a several destroyer escort. She really hoped they wouldn’t go too crazy with the number of ships brought. They would. She knew they would. But she really hoped they would listen instead of just shooting. She knew this would not go as planned, but really hoped some of it at least went to plan.
Their arrival in the Sol solar system would be noticed very early. They would have been actively looking for her own ship but would certainly find the MUCH larger trio of alien ships and would be on high alert. By the time they made it to Mars, who knows what kind of panic might already be going on within the various world militaries.
______________________________________________________________________________________
It was a few short days later and as soon as they entered the Sol system, Mira became anxious. She headed to the communication room because they would be at Mars in only a few minutes. She knew the target would be his cell phone, because it was going to be on the Commander. The ships paused at Mars and Mira sent the message. She had decided to add 2 SOS codes before the message to grab Commander Morris’ attention as it’s the most recognized message in the code. After the message was sent, they waited a few minutes to give the message time to be received and translated, and then moved towards Earth’s moon. They would wait on the dark side of the moon until it was time to head down.
_________________________________________________________________________________
Commander Morris had been pulled into yet another meeting after various sensers had picked up on 3 of the largest ships they had ever imagined were quickly approaching Earth. This meeting had high ranking military generals from all of the branches in attendance. He was the lowest ranking person here and was only invited because he was the main contact for the only manned craft they currently had in space minus the space station. It was quiet when his phone went off and everyone turned to look at him. His face was flushed with embarrassment, but after hearing the SOS, he became confused. One of the generals began scribing the code. It stopped and did not repeat.
The general scribing held up a finger to stave off the questions as he finished the code. He cleared his throat and read it out loud for everyone, “SOS. SOS. Commander Morris. Chief Rodriquez abducted by friendly aliens. Alpha Centauri home to slaver aliens. Slavers entrenched on earth. Meet at Howland Island in 2 days.”
Shortly after that announcement, another call came in to let them know that the 3 ships were moving towards Earth again. “Well, sounds like we have some answers. Either that was your missing Chief, or these aliens speak English and have been watching us for a long time. Where is Howland Island again?”
A Navy Admiral replied, “It’s a tiny barren island out in the middle of the Pacific. It is one of the minor islands under our control, but it’s only a little under two miles long. At least they chose one of our territories.”
“How long will it take to get troops out there?” an Army general asked.
The Navy Admiral chuckled. “Less than 24 hours. It just depends on how many vessels you want there.
The Marine Major General replied, “Si vis pacem, para bellum.” The others assembled nodded solemnly and began to plan the welcome party. **(Latin for if you want peace, prepare for war)**
_________________________________________________________________________________
It was time to depart for Howland Island. The transport craft they used was a little larger and much more advanced than the craft Mira had been on during the voyage to Alpha Centari. They had a small contingent of crewmen coming with them and several of the smaller fighter ships were ready for combat if an emergency extraction was needed.
As they descended, Mira pointed out the aircraft carrier and its Destroyer escorts. She then pointed out 2 more sets of Aircraft Carriers and escorts some distance away, but still in range for combat. At seeing this, Fennis ordered an escort of 7 fighters to help keep them safer. They would stay in the upper atmosphere but were well within range to assist if needed.
They landed and Vebi, Fennis, and Mira exited the craft. Within a few minutes a smaller ship was lowered into the water and headed to the island.
“So far, this is promising.” Mira muttered. And then a few more ships were lowered into the water. “I suppose that’s to be expected.” Mira continued.
“Yes. I suppose so. Most first contacts are like this. You were easy.” Vebi teased.
“I was also alone.” Mira retorted.
“Fair enough.” Fennis added.
Within a few minutes, the ships had landed, and soldiers, likely marines, were exiting the craft and taking up defensive positions. The last to exit were a few generals, Commander Morris, and what looked to be a diplomat of some kind. As the approached, Mira saluted. The generals returned the salute and the highest ranking one said, “At ease.” Mira moved to parade rest.
A man with 3 stars on his shoulder started the conversation. “I am Admiral Davis. My companions are General Thompson, Commander Morris, and Mrs. Zimmerman.” General Thompson had 4 stars on his shoulder and was wearing a Marine uniform.
*Bubble noises*
At the confused looks of everyone else, Mira replied, “This is Rear Admiral Vebi.” She gestured to the Flx’usri. And then gestured to the Drala, “This is Lieutenant Commander Fennis. They can both understand you, but because you don’t have a translator, you won’t be able to understand them.”
“I see.” Admiral Davis replied. “Is there a way to receive a translator?”
*Growling and grumbling noises followed with bubble noises*
“Lieutenant Commander Fennis said that it is an implant which is painful at first to receive and you may become fearful of bad intention. Rear Admiral Vebi suggested we all show our translator implant scars.” They each turned and pointed to where their implant scar was so that they could see the similar shapes of the scars.
*Bubble noises*
“Rear Admiral Vebi said that it will incapacitate you for several minutes. I can attest to this. It was the worst migraine I had ever had and, in the moment, you don’t think it will end. Even when it begins to lessen, if you move it feels like the pain starts all over again. I think it was about 5 minutes of feeling like I was dying. But once the pain goes away, there is no residual pain.”
“I think we can put that off for now.” General Thompson replied. Admiral Davis nodded agreement. “You will act as translator for now, Chief Rodriquez?”
“Yes Sir.”
“Chief, Commander Morris says you have been non-responsive for some time. Care to explain?” Davis asked.
“The last communication I received from Commander Morris is when he reamed me for jettisoning my dead crew mates, and I did send him a response. Was the response received, sir?”
*Growling and grumbling noises*
“I didn’t know that. Lieutenant Commander Fennis says that he retrieved our dead and has brought them here.” Mira replied as Fennis and Vebi both grinned at the secret being revealed. Fennis spoke into his portable and several crew men came out guiding 4 wheelless carts out with sheet wrapped bodies on top.
Commander Morris replied, “I did receive that communication, but I sent another 4 messages after that.”
*Bubble noises*
“Yes, Rear Admiral, Cherrin and I feared that communications were being blocked. She tried increasing capabilities to receive messages, but it didn’t work.” Mira looked back to the Admiral and General. “My apologies, sirs. Rear Admiral Vebi was confirming that we had tried to increase the receiving ability of the ship.”
“We figured that out. It’s fine.” Davis chuckled.
*Grumble noises*
“Lieutenant Commander Fennis is asking where you would like his men to deliver the bodies.”
“Lee!” The General barked, making everyone else jump.
“Sir!” A man replied as he trotted up.
“Receive our dead and get them on the transport.”
“Yes, sir!” He replied, saluted, and then called out to a few men to help him. Lee began trying to talk to the Drala and Flx’usri as though they were deaf.
“For Christ’s sake, Lee. They understand us just fine. Quit making an ass of yourself.” General Thompson barked. Mira could hear a few chuckles from the marines as Lee’s face colored with embarrassment. Both Vebi and Fennis hid their amusement well. Within a few minutes the dead had been transferred and they were about to continue the conversation when a Drala burst from the ship.
*Panicked growling*
“What is it?” Davis asked as he saw all 3 that understood take on worried looks. Vebi did a quick nod towards the humans which Mira understood to mean to translate.
“They’ve picked up on Imperian ships coming our way. You would recognize the Imperia as the little grey men from pop culture. They are not friendly. He said 20 ships. Bigger than fighters. He thinks transporter size for most of them.” Meanwhile Fennis was trying to communicate with his portable to no effect. “They’ve jammed communications.” As Mira was relaying info, the general was barking orders, and the admiral was attempting communication with the ships.
“I’m getting static as well.” Davis replied.
“Mrs. Zimmerman, you should take cover.” Thompson replied, pointed her toward the ships they came on.
Lee came back with weapons and armor for Mira, Thompson, and Davis while Povin came out of the Transport with weapons and shields for the aliens and Mira. After getting permission, he brought shields to Davis and Thompson as well. Mira explained and demonstrated how to put it on and activate it as well as what it shielded against.
When Thompson offered armor for the Drala at least due to fit, Mira declined saying that it would be too heavy for them to wear.
The conversations only took moments and before they knew it, the water all around the island erupted with ships.

Hey Swap,
Getting rid of some pieces that I don't use. Let me know if you have any questions or need followup pictures. I can only accept ZELLE or Venmo. Not looking for any trades.

Pictures
ZT 301 Tiger Stripe
This is a knife I bought a while ago. I haven't used it much as its not legal to carry where I live. The condition of the knife is a solid B+. There is a little bit of wear of the tiger stripe but it only really shows in certain angles ( I tried to capture it in the photo). The lockup is solid at around 40%. There is a bit of wear on the clip and a small speckle of wear on the lock side. The knife is a tank and would make a great user. This one is a bit hard to find so it would also make a great collection piece.
SV: 215 SOLD
Strider SNG PD#1(Analogous to Cruwear)
This one is definitely a user. It has been sharpened by the previous owner but not well. The tip is a bit rounded but otherwise its not bad. This one has wear all around the knife (Especially on the pivot coating). There is also a small chip on the aluminum and the butt of the handle. This is the smoothest strider I have handled and is solid in the lockup at around 45%. The centering leans a hair to the showside but is not very noticeable. I stupidly purchased this at a high markup of 850 when I was first starting in the knife game. I know thats insane to ask for this user so i'll drop it significantly but let me know if i'm still being unreasonable.
SV: 500
Demko AD20.5 3v Textured Titanium
This is a knife I purchased when they first released. I thought it would be the perfect knife for me but I did not love it as much as I expected. The knife is in perfect condition and has not been used at all. It is perfectly centered and rock solid on the lockup.
SV: 325
Strider SNG with BGM Regrind
Next up is another SNG but with a satin blade and RWL-34 steel. This knife came with a super light detent so it was modified to strengthen the detent. The blade was also reground by BGM knives to thin out the thick stock and to add a swedge on the top. This knife has been used a little on some cardboard boxes. There is a bit of wear on the pivot and a couple small scuffs on the showside. The clip also shows wear and there is a scratch on the lockside next to the clip. The centering is perfect and the lockup is rock solid at about 25%. There is a extremely tiny bit of detent lash but it does not affect the knife in any way.
SV: 325 SOLD
Hogue Deka Magnacut with Original Goat Scales
This build was going to be my daily user but the blade stock was a little too thin for my liking. This knife is brand new and has not been used. I did change out the polymer scales for these Original Goat aluminum scales and backspacer. It is textured with a black coating. The knife is beautiful but just not for me. The centering is perfect and the lockup is solid. I spent around 250 on the knife including the scales and backspacer.
SV: 200
Para 3 Lightweight M4 This was a heavily modified knife that I bought off swap a while back. The knife was acid etched and sharpened by the previous owner. I believe they had also dyed the scales to a deeper red color. The knife has a bit of side to side play but I have not tried to tighten the pivot. The blade is off center and favors the lock side. There is also a small stripe of color that seems lighter on the scales near the lanyard hole. The knife comes with a bronze deep carry clip. The previous owner put a decent mirror edge on the knife.
SV: 95
Native 5 This was purchased brand new from GP knives. It is the exclusive native 5 in rex 45 with white scales. The centering is good and the lockup is solid. I have not used or carried the knife at all.
SV: 110
Tidioute Cutlery Toe Nail Clipper
This was purchased off ebay a while back. I wanted to try out the knife but ii don't slipjoints are really for me. This knife comes with ebony wood handles. The knife a bit of side to side play (which happens often with these knives). The walk and talk is decent with a pull of around 7. The knife is centered and is a great looking knife.
SV: 150
GEC Bull Nose Trapper
Last up is this bull nose trapper with black micarta scales. This has been modified using super blue to darken the blade, pivot, and backspacer. The walk and talk is decent at around a 7 for the pull. The blade is a hair towards the left but it really isnt noticeable unless you're really looking. There is a tiny bit of side to side but otherwise it is a a solid knife that could be a great user. The knife deifnitley needs a bit of a sharpening.
SV: 135
I can only take Zelle or Venom currently. If you call dibs and then try to negotiate the price I will move on to the next person. It's been a while since i have been on swap so let me know if anything is missing or if you have any questions. Thank you!

VAMOS A JUGAR! A Beginner’s Guide to New York Yankees Baseball en Español

COMMON WORDS & PHRASES FROM THE BROADCAST:

Adentro = inside.
Example: “El lanziamiento…. Adentro!”
Translation: “The pitch… Inside!”
Afuera = outside.
Example: “El lanziamiento… Afuera!”
Translation: “The throw… Outside!”
Árbitro = Umpire (a lot of times Rickie will just say umpire though)
Ayer = Yesterday.
Bajo/Bajito = When the pitch is down (bajo) or a little down (bajito).
Example: “El lanziamiento… bajito y adentro!”
Translation: “The pitch… low and inside!”
Bases llenas (Bah-Seh) (Yen-Uhs)= bases loaded
Batazo (Bah-Tah-So) = Big hit. And while it could be used to describe a home run, it could also be used for any type of clutch hit as well.
Example: “Ay dios mío! En ‘98, Bernie castigado Los Rangers con las bases llenas. WOW! Que batazo!”
Translation: “Oh my god! In ‘98, Bernie punished the Rangers with the bases loaded. WOW! What a big hit!”
Bate (Bah-Teh) = Bat.
Example: “Oye! Dame el bate!”
Translation: “Hey, give me the bat!”
Batear (Bah-Teh-Ahr) = To bat. (pronounced like bate, pero with an “are” sound on the end)
Example: “Y ahora Derek Jeter en la caja a batear.”
Translation: “And now Derek Jeter in the box to bat.”
Bateando = batting.
Example: “Mira quien está bateando ahora… es El Sotomatico!”
Translation: “Look who’s batting now… it’s Juan Soto!” (El Sotomatico is just nickname Rickie has for him).
Bola buena = literally “good ball”. Basically another way of saying strike
Bola mala = literally “bad ball”. Basically another way of saying the pitch is a ball.
Bomba/Bombazo = Bomb/big bomb. When you see things like “azo”, for example, at the end of words, it’s sometimes used for emphasis in a grand or big way. In this case, a bombazo would be a ball that gets absolutely demolished. Think this and this
Example 1: “Una bomba sólida de Gleyber Torres!”
Translation 1: “A solo bomb from Gleyber Torres!”
Example 2: “Uffff… Aaron Judge envió esa pelota a Connecticut. QUE BOMBAZO!
Translation 2: “Uffff… Aaron Judge sent that ball to Connecticut. WHAT A BOMB!”
Buen picheo, buen trabajo = “Good pitch, good job”
Buscando por la pelota = “looking for the ball”
Caja de bateo = Batters box
Caja fuerte = I’ll include this one just because I’ve heard him say it and it could come up if you ever listen to his broadcast lol. So, earlier in the season, I can’t remember who it was behind the plate but, whoever it was, they got a ball in a… not so great place. When Rickie was describing the situation, he said that they got the ball right “en la caja fuerte” (in the safe/lockbox)
Cambio = Change. Here he could be talking about a change-up or an actual change (substitution, trade, etc.).
Example: “El lanziamiento… y el cambio está afuera!”
Translation: “The pitch… and the change-up is outside!”
Campocorto = Shortstop. (Though it’s one word, it will almost sound like campo and corto are two separate words when you hear it, so just keep that in mind)
Captura = catch/capture (there are a few different ways to say it. *Atrapada * is also another one). I’ll use two examples for a couple of different ways he might say it.
Example 1: “Gleyber brinca y captura la pelota!
Translation 1: “Gleyber jumps and catches the ball!”
Example 2: “Gleyber salta y atrapa la pelota!”
Translation 2: “Gleyber jumps and catches the ball!”
Carrera = Run. As in the stat, not actually running. That’s a bit different. (Las carreras = the runs)
Example 1: “ Un hit al izquierdo y Soto produce una carrera!”
Translation 1: “A hit to left and Soto produces a run!”
Example 2: “Un linea al derecho y Soto empuja las carreras!”
Translation 2: “A line drive to right and Soto pushes in the runs!”
Carrera adelante = Go ahead run
El conteo = The count.
Example: “El lanziamiento… y otra bola mala! El conteo ahora 3-0.”
*Translation: “The pitch… and another bad ball! The count now 3-0.”
Contra la pared = Against the wall.
Example: “Atrás, atrás… y Gardner la atrapa contra la pared!”
Translation: “Back, back… and Gardner catches it against the wall!”
Cuadrangular = -Another way to say home run.
Curva = curveball
Example: “El lanziamiento… y la curva está adentro!”
Translation: “The pitch… and the curve is inside!”
Doble (Doh-Blay)= double
Doble juego = doubleheader
Doble jugada = double play
Dos pa’ arriba, dos pa’ bajo = Two up, two down
El Chihuahua = Rickie’s nickname for Verdugo
El Juez = How Rickie refers to Judge a lot of times. Spanish for “the judge”.
Entrada = inning
Entrada completa = Inning complete
Esperando por la pelota = waiting for the ball
Esquina = corner. The pitch could be “en la esquina” (on the corner) or there could be “runners on the corners” (corredores en las esquinas)
Esta noche = tonight
Está tarde = this afternoon.
Flycito = little fly ball
Foul al publico = a foul ball to the crowd/public
Foul atrás = fouled back
Fuera = Out.
Ganador = Winner.
Guante = glove
Guante de oro = gold glove
Jardín central = centerfield
Jardín derecho = right field
Jardín izquierdo = left field
Jonrón = Yet another way to see home run.
Juego = game (juegos = games). You might also hear him say partido/partidos.
La parte gruesa = literally “the thick part”. He’ll often use it when talking about the meat of the order.
Example: “En la próxima entrada, la parte gruesa para Los Yankees!”
Translation: “In the next inning, the meat of the order for the Yankees!”
Cole lanza… y strike contado! = “Cole throws… and strike sung!” Rickie will say “cantado”, which translates to sung, when the batter watches the strike go by.
Derrotas = defeats
Example: “El lanzador tiene 5 derrotas.”
Translation: “The pitcher has 5 losses”
Ganas: Wins
Example: “Cuando Gerrit Cole ganó su Cy Young, el tenía 15 ganas en la temporada.”
Translation: “When Gerrit Cole won his Cy Young, he had 15 wins on the season.”
Lanzador = pitcher
Lanzamiento = pitch/throw
”El lanzamiento… por alta y afuera” = ”The pitch… high and outside”
El lanzamiento… bajo/bajito = “The pitch low/slightly low”
El lanzamiento… en la esquina afuera = The pitch… on the outside corner
Linea = line drive
Example: “Una línea por el jardín derecho!”
Translation: “A line drive for right field!”
Le cantaron a strike = when the batter doesn’t swing and the umpire calls it a strike
Example: “Y le cantaron a strike… el conteo ahora 0 y 1”
Translation: “They sing to him strike… the count now 0-1”
Le tiene = he has it. so you might hear something like “una línea a campo corto (a line drive to shortstop), pero Volpe le tiene! (But Volpe has it!)
Mascara = catcher’s mask.
Muy bien atrapada = very well caught!
Notado = scored.
Notar = to score
Example: “En este entrada, necesitamos a notar 2 carreras!
Translation: In this inning, we need to score two runs!
Parte derecho = literally the “right part”. If a batter hits a foul ball first base side, for example, you’ll hear Rickie say “un foul al parte derecho!
Parte izquierda = literally the “left part”. If a batter hits a foul ball third base side, for example, you’ll hear Rickie say “un foul a parte izquierda”
Picarazo = Big pick! He says this a lot when the catcher has to deal with a pitch in the dirt.
Primera base = first base
Profunda/o = deep. Example: “La pelota va profunda” (the ball goes deep). He’ll also sometimes say “bastante profundo va la pelota” (quite deep goes the ball)
Receptor = Catcher. And, honestly, catcher is used pretty often on the broadcast, like umpire. As is “swing”, “foul” and even “out”.
Recta = fastball
Robó la base = he stole the base Example: “Gardner robó la base.”
Translation: “Gardner stole the base.”
Roleta = ground ball
Roletacito = soft little grounder
Roletazo duro = hard ground ball. Rickie tends to mostly use roletazo or, every now and then, roletacito.
Example: “Un roletazo/roletacito a campocorto… Volpe le tiene… Y FUERA A PRIMERA!”
Translation: A grounder to shortstop… Volpe has it… AND OUT AT FIRST!”

Se va, se va y se fue! = The home run call. “it’s going, going and it’s gone!”
Tercera base = Third base
Tirándole = Rickie uses this often when the batter swings and misses at the pitch. When they strike out, he’ll add a “se poncha” at the end.
Example: “El lanziamiento… y strike! Tirándole se poncha!”
Translation: “The pitch… and strike! He strikes out swinging!”
Tiro largo = long throw.
Example: “Un roletazo/roletacito a campo corto… Volpe le tiene… Un tiro largo… Y FUERA A PRIMERA!”

Fragrant Foto + First Impressions: Arabiyat Blueberry Musk
Fragrant Foto + First impressions: Arabiyat Blueberry Musk
There was a recent post about the combination of two hobbies (fragrance and photography), and it’s always been something I have very much enjoyed as well. So I decided that I will try to post more and share images that I’ve captured along with my first impressions/reviews.
Every year around this time, I go on a little middle eastern fragrance buying spree. So there will be more where this came from. And for this particular fragrance, I first encountered a few posts here on Reddit about it. I was intrigued, but there has not been a ton of posts about it. So I hope that if you’ve been interested in this, you find this helpful.
Arabiyat Prestige Blueberry Musk:
Notes- Blueberry, blackberry, freesia, lavender, rose, vanilla, raspberry, patchouli, Oakmoss, Musk
It has been said that this is a dupe for the Fenty perfume by Rihanna. I cannot confirm or deny that, as I have not tried Fenty. I was interested in it because I thought maybe it would be similar to Poets of Berlin by Vilhelm Perfumerie…. But no. At least to my nose it is not similar to that.
My Thoughts- the initial spray has a semi-juicy, candy-like blueberry quality. But very shortly, that fades away and it really starts to smell more like blueberry crumble to me. The most prominent notes to my nose are blueberry, vanilla, patchouli, and musk. As the wear time continues, the gourmand qualities stay apparent, but there is an occasional feeling of hair products… but not the shampoo kind. I wouldn’t say that this is a negative in my eyes, but I can see some people taking issue with this quality. The musk is sorta neutral to me, and the patchouli starts off unassuming, but does become slightly more dirty as time goes on. The blueberry and vanilla remain the most prominent notes throughout for me though.
Performance- wears for about 6-7 hrs on me. And projects on the high side of moderate for the first 2-2.5 hrs. So it’s definitely noticeable, but I don’t find it to be obnoxious. It’s does retain a slight airiness, and does not feel dense or heavy.
Sweetness Level- 4.5 out of 5
Overall, I would rate this a 3.5 out of 5 , I think it will be a fun one to wear on its own occasionally, but I do also think that it will layer well with other perfumes. But I do think there are some things about it that could turn people off.
Out of curiosity, I’d love to hear from anyone who has fenty, I’m really interested to know if my description of this fragrance is in line with your experience of fenty.
As for my picture: I couldn’t resist throwing some real blueberries in there. And I had fun playing with blue light. I hope you like it, and I hope to see more people post pictures/artwork of some sort, I think that would be really fun.
