2023.10.01 01:48 chronic-venting There's a long, disgusting history of right-wingers defending child predators

As GOPers falsely label LGBTQ people "groomers," Media Matters has compiled a list of conservative media personalities downplaying sexual misconduct.
By Ja'han Jones June 14, 2023
As conservative lawmakers and members of the media baselessly label LGBTQ people and their allies as "groomers," they have invited scrutiny of some of their own behavior toward children—and their embrace of people found to have sexually abused kids.
Unfortunately for right-wingers, the internet is widely accessible. On Monday, progressive media watchdog Media Matters released a thorough timeline highlighting conservative media personalities defending child molesters and promoting the sexualization of children—and, in many cases, audio and video footage is included as evidence.
The report features several figures you're likely to know if you've been following coverage of right-wing extremism in recent years. […] If your least-favorite conservative commentator isn't on my abridged list here, don't fret: Head over to Media Matters for the complete roundup.
You may even want to print out a copy to keep in your wallet, so that the next time a conservative begins to rail against groomers, you can tell them to save their breath and look inward. Because you brought receipts.
.
Over the past year, the far right's obsession with accusing its opponents of ["grooming"] has become a staple of the modern Republican playbook. Conservative media stars and GOP elected officials have used baseless accusations of sexual abuse and child "grooming" to attack Democrats and demonize the LGBTQ rights movement across the nation.
A review of the right's hypocrisy on [sexual violence against minors] and abuse found that conservative media personalities have repeatedly made comments promoting the sexualization of [minors], while others have defended figures who have been accused of abuse or [sexual violence against minors]—and several reported abusers have even worked in right-wing media themselves.
The right-wing fixation with [grooming] dates back decades and has been a central facet in dangerous right-wing conspiracy theories including Pizzagate and QAnon, both of which have led to real-world violence. Baseless [grooming] accusations have been used by the right to discredit and attack the LGBTQ rights movement and any figure or symbol that they disagree with—from Elmo and public libraries to a plethora of businesses and organizations.
The moral panic behind these accusations puts the real lives of LGBTQ people at risk. These groundless allegations have led to neo-Nazi encroachment at Pride events and calls for violence against pro-LGBTQ people and organizations, including children's hospitals.
As we enter Pride Month—a time of the year that has invigorated right-wing extremists in their attacks against LGBTQ people—allies, political leaders, and businesses must not succumb to bad-faith actors making groundless accusations against these underrepresented communities.
Here is a non-comprehensive breakdown of right-wing media figures and organizations who have either made comments that promote or mock the sexualization of minors, or supported or defended figures who have been accused of abuse or [sexual violence against minors]:
Promoting the sexualization of children and teens
Working with or defending alleged [sexual predators] and abusers
The right-wing media's hypocrisy on the topic is overwhelming, but it will likely not stop them from continuing to make baseless accusations about the LGBTQ community and putting real lives in danger.

2023.02.20 02:02 MolokoBespoko So, what books were found in Brady and Hindley’s possession? (a write-up)

I have not given an exhaustive list below - only the information that is in the public eye. I have done my best to expand on it and fill in some blanks, and even though this is pure speculation I believe that there are other book titles that have not been released to the public. I’ll expand on this below.
It appeared that the following books had been in David Smith’s possession before the 5th October 1965; at which time he returned them to Brady and they were packed into one of the suitcases (the blue one) that was found in the left luggage lockers at Manchester Central Station:
* Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller * Kiss of the Whip by Edwin J. Henri * The Life and Ideas of the Marquis de Sade by Geoffrey Gorer (this was found wrapped in the Daily Mirror) [https://images.nationalarchives.gov.uk/assetbank-nationalarchives/action/viewAsset?id=12960&index=48&total=60&view=viewSearchItem] * Justine, or The Misfortunes of Virtue by the Marquis de Sade [https://images.nationalarchives.gov.uk/assetbank-nationalarchives/action/viewAsset?id=12961&index=46&total=60&view=viewSearchItem] * Orgies of Torture and Brutality by Paul Gregson * The Perfumed Garden by the Sheikh Nefzawi (probably the translation by Sir Richard Burton)
17-year-old Smith had read all of these books under the “pupillage” of 27-year-old Brady. Smith also deposited several soft porn magazines - Men’s Digest, Penthouse, Swank, Cavalier and Wildcat. These were all found in the blue suitcase; possibly as a preemptive measure by Brady (and possibly Hindley) to incriminate Smith in case anything went wrong with the murder.
Other books found in the blue suitcase were:
More books were found in the other suitcase (the brown one, which is also where the infamous Lesley Ann Downey tapes were found) - according to Carol Ann Lee, this included a study of Jack the Ripper. I have no clue what the title of this was, and so many books had been published on Jack the Ripper by that point that I don’t think I can narrow it down.
According to Lee, in the brown suitcase, there were also some German books (again, I don’t know the titles) and more pornographic books too - including one named Jailbait. I believe this could be one of two different books with the same title - I found one by William Bernard from 1951 and one by Clyde Allison from 1962. I should say that naïve little me Googled around for twenty minutes without knowing what the term “jailbait” meant until I put the pieces together after finding the synopses of those two books. It seems that titles of other pornographic books were never released (presumably as to not promote them to the public), and so I think it is safe to assume that they were also paedophilic in nature. I guess we won’t know about any of this until 2065/2066 at the very earliest, though.
Three books had been found dumped onto the body of Edward Evans for some reason (maybe as a disrespect to the body? I’m not sure) - Smith saw Brady do this after the two of them had moved him into the spare bedroom. I am unsure if there was any significance around these titles or their contents:
I also saw reports that the following books were found:
According to Lee, there was a book found called Paris Vision 28 in the blue suitcase. I went searching around for this and I have no idea what it could be - which was surprising because Lee is one of the most reliable sources of Moors Murders knowledge out there (even though her books occasionally do get things wrong). The closest match I found was what looks like a volume of French-language magazine articles called La Revue de Paris Vol 28 and I highly doubt it is that. I found a 1963 book called A Vision of Paris: The Photographs of Eugène Atget; The Words of Marcel Proust which seems more plausible considering that Brady was a photographer, and also probably would have read the work of renowned authors like Proust if he had the opportunity to. Either that, or it is probably some pornographic book that is too seedy to catalogue.
In regard to the couple’s mutual love (or specifically, Brady’s) of sadomasochistic literature, Hindley told her solicitor, Jim Nichol:
One of the most popular narratives that gets regurgitated around the case surrounds Meyer Levin’s novel Compulsion. It is a fictionalised account of the 1924 Leopold and Loeb murder case in Chicago. Wealthy students Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb abducted and killed a 14-year-old boy named Bobby Franks. Both Leopold and Loeb admitted that they were driven by their thrill-seeking, Übermenschen delusions (i.e. God complexes), and their aspiration to commit “the perfect crime".
According to Lee, Hindley claimed that before she and Brady murdered their first victim, Pauline Reade, Brady had handed her the book (in which one character is called Myra) to read as a blueprint for the murder. He told her that Leopold and Loeb had failed to plan properly and that had proved their downfall. Brady denied having read the book at all – he claimed the inspiration came from the 1959 film adaptation of the same name, in which Orson Welles (one of his favourite actors) played the defence attorney. “To the perfect crime!” runs the opening line.
Dr. Alan Keightley reported something else entirely. Hindley confessed to Detective Topping in the 80s that Brady often spoke to her about the book, and that he had said to her on 12th July 1963 (the day of Pauline’s murder) that he wanted to commit the “perfect murder” – implying that it was news for her out of the blue on that day. Brady, meanwhile, denied speaking to Hindley about a “perfect murder”, arguing that in her comments about Compulsion she was simply mouthing another ‘myth’ about the case. He wrote to Keightley in a letter dated October 1992:
It doesn’t seem as if they owned a physical copy of Compulsion - I feel like it would have been reported if they did. It makes me feel as if it wasn’t really that important to them.
Finally, I have some quotes from Smith in which he lists off some more books he read under Brady’s “recommendation”:

Reddit is accidentally creating a searchable index of underage - including sexual - content

Post contents

I noticed on roastme a while back that you could quickly search mine or any mods comment history for "Under 18" and quickly get access to all the posts we'd removed for being likely under 18. Unfortunately, this principle seems to also work on some boards with sexual content using words for their removal.
I haven't shared it before because I've been worried that exposing it publicly would lead to the use of the exploit with no admin counter-action. But since the admins have not responded with an update since I reported it over a month ago. I don't think it will change without exposure and someone may already be using it.
Granted posts of clear CSAM (child sexual abuse material) can be reported to admins but there are lots of grey area posts where a mod believes it's underage but isn't a clear CSAM. Like sexual/suggestive video of "teens" from social apps where mods removed it out of precaution because they looked young but it wasn't verifiable. It's more content that would have been found in the old sub "jailbait" that was banned specifically because Reddit didn't want to sexualize underage posts.
Short of banning sexual content (please no) and anything that could contain abuse or flooding admins with more reports than they could handle I think there are really only 2 ways to tackle it.
  1. Currently, as mods I suggest that for any sub that has removal for reasons of the person in the post being under 18. That all removals be done with notification of removal reason through DM, no comment left on the actual post, and locking comments.
  2. Mods are given the power to actually "delete" posts.
Ultimately I know there's an argument over mods being able to "delete/delete" posts. But otherwise, they will still remain accessible through URL. I believe that would leave Reddit legally liable since someone would have manually reviewed the content and deemed it to be "underage" but still left it accessible.
The only other option would be for Reddit to beef up its official admin team to do a manual review of any post removed for the content of someone being possibly under 18 with a report path for admins to remove underage content beyond just CSAM. And I know on just our sub alone that would be ~30-100 reviews a day.

🇪🇺 Russian invasion of Ukraine 🇪🇺

Do not spread panic. Do not share any information about movements, location or identification of any of the Ukrainian armed forces.
Do not share content pushing pro Kremlin agenda no matter how well it is disguised (as a rebuttal, research, philosophical discussion, etc).
Claims that question sovereignty and/or legitimacy of the territory of Ukraine including Crimean peninsula are not allowed.
When you share contents from organizations known for lying, or pushing pro Kremlin agenda or having Kremlin ties, your duty is about context and authenticity.
To Americans: Reddit is an American website. Sharing advice on handling guns is perfectly fine, but sharing instructions for making explosive devices (including molotov cocktails), is a violation of the content policy. However, advice on dDos attacks, urban warfare guidance, armored vehicles vulnerabilities, high value targets identification, calls to donate civilian drones, you name it, are A-Okay.
To Russians: let this be known to your troops who entered our land, be sure that every single one of you will be sent to trial and jailed for your atrocities. Your commanding officers will face international trials and will be held responsible. Your president is destroying your country and ruining your future. Fight against your criminal government.

🇪🇺 No flame war 🇪🇺

Don't insult other users, either individually ("You're an idiot") or as a group ("Everybody who posts on this subreddit is an idiot"). This also includes implied insults ("Are you stupid or something?"). Once an argument degenerates into name-calling, it's time to either step back or clear out.

🇪🇺 No disruptive behavior 🇪🇺

Don't post messages designed solely to disrupt the normal flow of a posts. A few obvious examples are interrupting Europeans singing Ode an die Freude, an ALL CAPS, AlTeRnAtInG cApS, posts that force browsers to scroll horizontally or vertically, links to paywalls, browser traps or glitches, and random ASCII art. If you've ever been told that sarcasm isn't your strong suit, use /s flag where necessary.

🇪🇺 No harassment 🇪🇺

Online harassment is something Götterfunken Network takes seriously. If you continually bother, intimidate, mock, or bully another user in public or private on Götterfunken Network communities after they've made it clear that they do not want any contact from you, then you may be subject to a suspension or ban. Being annoying or participating in a heated argument is not harassment, but following an individual or group of users, online or off, to the point where they no longer feel that it's safe to post online or are in fear of their real life safety is.

🇪🇺 Do not share violent content. 🇪🇺

Do not post content that encourages, glorifies, incites, or calls for violence or physical harm against an individual (including oneself) or a group of people; likewise, do not post content that glorifies or encourages the abuse of animals. We understand there are sometimes reasons to post violent content (e.g., educational, newsworthy, artistic, satire, documentary, etc.) so if you’re going to post something violent in nature that does not violate these terms, ensure you provide context to the viewer so the reason for posting is clear.
If your content is borderline, please use a NSFW tag. Even mild violence can be difficult for someone to explain to others if they open it unexpectedly.
Some examples of violent content that would violate the Rule:
* Post or comment with a credible threat of violence against an individual or group of people.
* Post containing mass killer manifestos or imagery of their violence.
* Terrorist content, including propaganda.
* Post containing imagery or text that incites, glorifies, or encourages self-harm or suicide.
* Post that requests, or gives instructions on, ways to self-harm or commit suicide.
* Graphic violence, image, or video without appropriate context.

🇪🇺 Don’t be toxic 🇪🇺

Being toxic means being rude and not being nice. Toxic people are not true to people around them. They need an attitude check. Their personalities are so unappealing it makes the people around them suffer and turn rude as well. They file abusive reports. If you cannot remain civil while discussing a topic with someone whose opinion you disagree with, do not start such conversations or join in on those started by others. Do not cross-posts communities dedicated to xenophobia, racism, sexism, homophobia or transphobia.

🇪🇺 Don't be offensive 🇪🇺

You should not post anything that would cause Europeans to feel hurt, upset or angry, here are some examples.
* Links to images or videos containing pornography, nudity of any kind, or sexualized minors (i.e. "jailbait").
* Links to real-life blood and gore.
* Sexually explicit posts. If you must discuss sexual matters, please keep it vague. The less detail, the less likely someone will find it offensive.
* Don't use "gay" or "retarded" in place of "stupid", or "rape" in place of "destroyed".
* No falsifiable health information that encourages or poses a significant risk of physical harm to the reader.
* Ukraine is both the conventional short and long name of the country. The usage of "'the Ukraine' is incorrect grammatically, politically and constitutionally. The use of the article relates to the time before independence in 1991, when Ukraine was a republic of the Soviet Union known as the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.
* Support our British remainers brothers and sisters.
* Offenders who condone Brits-bashing or insult Guy Verhofstadt will be sent to England.

🇪🇺 Don't be a trǫll 🇪🇺

Trǫlling is intentionally arguing to get a rise out people. Trǫlling is not someone posting an opinion that differs from yours, but someone posting a message designed to get others mad enough to violate one of the other rules. Going in a thread and posting "This place sucks and everybody who enjoys it is stupid" is trolling, and nothing good will come of it. Going in a thread and posting "Oh no I hated President von der Layen state of the European Union Address" isn't trǫlling, although it will not be a popular opinion. Even if you disagree, you can either debate the user civilly on their points or just ignore it.

🇪🇺 Respect Privacy 🇪🇺

There will be no tolerance for sharing or seeking personal information that could identify someone (real or fake). No private personal information of any kind should be posted in Götterfunken Network communities - real name, location, address, workplace, ID numbers, phone, or private e-mail, neither yours (we don't know if it's yours or not) nor anybody else's.
As with all social communities, we advise you to be mindful of the kind of information you choose to share. We want our users to be safe from the horrors (doxxing, witchhunting) of what the internet can do with your private information.
Personal information includes: phone numbers, email addresses, personal social media sites, city, town, address, reddit user history, or anything that can show you anyone's real identity, including your own. This includes selfies and other photos of the face.
Sharing pictures in context of the thread are fine, however soliciting pics or any information is not. Threads based solely on the intent to share pics of oneself (selfie threads) are never allowed.

🇪🇺 Zero tolerance for community interference 🇪🇺

Europe is proud to bring to Reddit some incredibly amazing little know communities, such as JuropijanSpeling, JustEUflags, pysanky, Oud_Rotterdam, NLvsFI, rance_iel, PORTUGALCYKABLYAT, BonneBouffe to name but a few, and you know so many others! This is what we want to talk about, not calling out other subreddits.
Do not call out other subreddits. Do not eat up the bandwidth about non-Federated Mod Teams you are not happy with. Do not celebrate subreddits ban. However well-grounded and nicely worded your remarks can be, folks are way too eager to celebrate how much better moderated Federated Communities are, for we follow 𝔉𝔢𝔡𝔢𝔯𝔞𝔩 ℛ𝔲𝔩𝔢𝔰. Then, someone points out they can name yet another struggling mod team who is even worse off. Next thing you know, brigades are popping up all around.
Well, we can't have that. Götterfunken Network wants nothing to do with increasing other mod teams workload, and we mean it. They have enough on their hands with their communities, thank you very much. The last thing they need atop of that is us.
Bragging about a ban is not okay. Consider yourself lucky if you got away with a warning.
In addition, be wary of joining in any brigade of another subreddit (either on Reddit and elsewhere) where one group of users suddenly decides to go post on another board. If you participate in any kind of organized invasion of any other service, you will likely be suspended for it.
* No vote cheating or vote manipulation or asking people to vote up or down on Reddit.
* No forming or joining a group that votes together on Reddit.
* No group effort to disrupt other communities from Forum Götterfunken Network.
* No group effort to disrupt Götterfunken Network communities.
* No crossposting a thread or comment from Götterfunken Network on a community deemed hostile while continuing to participate in both threads by voting, commenting, awarding or reporting.
Groups of users raiding Götterfunken Network, moderators who fail to act against bad faith trolling from outside of Götterfunken Network face a ban-sans-warning.

🇪🇺 Ban Appeals 🇪🇺

Every moderation team is made up of human beings (and some hard-working bots), and human beings sometimes make mistakes. If you feel that this mod team has made a mistake with regards to one of your posts, please let us know, so that we can correct it.
Before Appealing Moderator Actions, please double-check that you were not, in fact, violating any rules.
If you're sure, then send a message to ModMail (NOT TO AN INDIVIDUAL MODERATOR). You can do that by clicking the "Message The Moderators" button on the subreddit's front page.
In that message, please include a brief description of the moderator action that you believe was made in error. When possible, your initial message should include a link to the post or thread that caused the problem in the first place - if you forget to do this, your complaint cannot be addressed.
Please keep things concise and civil. If you want to appeal a moderator action, the mod team needs a brief summary of what happened and why you think it shouldn't have happened. They don't need a repetitive thirteen-paragraph rant about how you're perfectly innocent forever and how anyone who disagrees is an evil Commie Nazi.
If you broke a rule accidentally, or in the heat of the moment, you will get much better results by admitting this, apologizing, and agreeing to try avoiding it in the future than you will by lying about it.
DO NOT CONTACT INDIVIDUAL MODERATORS VIA PRIVATE MESSAGE. Unlike admins (who are paid employees of Reddit, Inc.), subreddit moderators are all volunteer members of the community. In the interests of fair moderation, Mods should keep their actions as moderators separate from their actions as private users. ModMail is for moderator business, Private Messages are for private business, and mixing up the two is inappropriate. In particular, ModMail exists for Team consistency, so that every moderator has the opportunity to view and weigh in on the discussion. If you try to PM individual moderators because you've already tried ModMail and didn't like the answer you got, you're not going to fool anyone.
DO NOT delete or substantially edit your post or posts after mods took action. Not only does destroying the evidence make it impossible for us to review it, it throws up a major red flag that you are not dealing in good faith. If you have done this, your appeal will not be considered at all.
DO NOT start screaming insults and wild accusations. Throwing a tantrum is a one-way, non-negotiable ticket to Permaban City in almost all subs, and a pet peeve of Reddit Anti-Evil Operations Team.
DO NOT assume that a post was removed just because a moderator personally disagreed with it. If a user makes an honest effort to promote an open discussion on an unpopular subject (as opposed to a troll or drive-by preacher), and accidentally breaks one or more rules in doing so, our team will be happy to offer suggestions for how to rephrase their post to comply with the rules. If, on the other hand, you intentionally broke rules, the post will need to be removed whether or not the content of the post was controversial.
DO NOT try to justify your behavior with Tu Quoque. If you see someone else breaking a rule, that is the time to use the Report button. It is not an excuse to break the rules yourself.
DO NOT engage in Rules Lawyering. As explained above, the moderators of the subreddit are humans, not robots. Human judgement is an essential part of the job. Inventing a contrived "personal interpretation" of the rules (including inventing idiosyncratic re-definitions of words) just so that you can claim that you didn't "technically" violate your revised "rules", is not going to fool anyone. If you find yourself arguing that something is "technically true", that means you already understand that it's not true in the sense that's actually relevant. Persistent attempts at Rules Lawyering are an admission that a) you are fully aware that you violated a common sense reading of the rules, and that b) you are deliberately engaged in trolling.

2021.07.30 21:35 Silfennic Escalation, The Problem With "Teen" Genre Porn, & a Brief Overview of the Neurological Impact of Porn Addiction

Hi everyone! If you frequent this subreddit, you'll likely recognize me as that one moderator that pops up to warn people about child porn a few times per week. I am making a post to link as a resource instead of writing out a new comment each time this advice is relevant.
...
A little bit of my background: I was groomed by a pedophile at age 13 and child porn was created of me. A few years ago I dated a man who was a porn addict, although I did not realize it at the time, and also found out towards the end of the relationship that he was a pedophile. One of my early childhood best friends spent time in jail for possession of child porn after we had graduated high school. The topic of child porn and other child sexual abuse is a topic very near and dear to my heart because of these events and how I've experienced so many different sides of the same issue.
In the process of her shaky start to recovery, my PA relapsed to "teen" genre porn. I saw what she had relapsed to and was horrified. These adult women looked so young, and it reminded me of those other events in my life. After that we both started learning more and more about porn addiction escalation, the shift to pedophilic content in mainstream porn (also known as "pedo-baiting"), & how those things interacted.
I want to share some of that information with all of you, in hopes that more people can catch this serious problem before it reaches the tipping point into their PA engaging with illegal content.
...
To set up this conversation, we first need to take a look at the physical impact of porn on the brain. Yes, I did say physical impact.
Porn addiction degrades the brain's dopamine receptors in the same way that cocaine, meth, and food addiction does; MRI studies have shown physical abnormalities in the frontal region of the brain in pedophiles and people with sexual compulsions that are anatomically consistent with chemical addictions. [source]
Porn addiction follows the currently understood addiction model, activating the brain's reward system in line with how the reward system gets activated by chemical drug use; pornography is considered a "supernormal stimuli", which is an artificially-created stimulus that overrides evolutionarily developed genetic responses; fMRI scans show that viewing cocaine-use related images and pornography activate the same limbic system/reward circuitry in the brain; porn addiction has a tolerance build issue, more extreme and graphic content is needed to maintain the same level of excitement; lower grey matter mass was associated with viewing pornographic photos, in an area of the brain that is necessary for higher neurological functioning; porn use is associated with less connections between the prefrontal cortex and the rest of the brain. [source]
Whew. That's a lot of information. Are you still with me?
If you have the time, I advise reading through the overview of those two studies. There is quite a bit more information in them than I summarized for this post. It's a fascinating read.
To build off of that information, lets talk about TOLERANCE BUILD. What is it? Why does it matter? How is it relevant to porn addiction? Why am I bringing it up in relation to child porn?
"Tolerance happens when a person no longer responds to a drug in the way they did at first. So it takes a higher dose of the drug to achieve the same effect as when the person first used it. This is why people with substance use disorders use more and more of a drug to get the “high” they seek." [source]
Tolerance build in porn addiction can go in a few different directions. When someone has been addicted for long enough that normal vanilla porn no longer gives them the same level of dopamine, they start branching out and escalating into things like unrealistically large breast augmentation content, celebrity nudes, camgirls, hentai, etc. The "next level" up from what they had originally started viewing. As their brain adjusts to that level of content, they go up another "level". This continues to grow into more and more extreme categories; things like incest, rape, porn of women being beaten, bestiality, and-- you can see where I'm going with this-- child porn. The longer a person spends addicted to porn, the more and more likely they are to escalate into "taboo" content.

How Extreme Porn Has Become A Gateway Into Child Abuse
Lets talk about that last article. It's an interview published in December of last year with Michael Sheath, an expert on child abuse. He's a counselor who has been working with child molesters for the past 33 years; 18 of which he has also worked with men who download child porn.
He talks in the interview about how the younger pedophiles he's been working with-- men who were adolescents in the 2000s-- were not born pedophiles. Rather, they went down what he calls a "potentially escalating pathway". Sound familiar?
Quote: "Sheath works directly with these men to explain that they are part of a chain of abuse that is happening to a real child – they aren’t “just looking”. And it works. He sees real changes in the way that offenders think about the images they have been looking at. “They start saying, ‘oh I just clicked, I don’t know why, I don’t fancy kids’, or ‘the children seem to be smiling’."
The strategy he's using to humanize these children works because porn addicts literally do not view the people in porn as being REAL PEOPLE. When porn addicts are viewing porn or suggestive images, the part of the brain that activates when seeing an object lights up & the part of the braight that activates when seeing a person deactivates. He's retraining these men's brains to start viewing the children on screen as actual children instead of as sex objects.
So how does that relate to my original topic of "teen" porn? Where do "teen" categories of porn fit in on this scale?
Teen, jailbait, barely legal, TikTok, are all the same category of porn. Women, assumed to be adults, dressing up to look younger, getting cosmetic surgery to look younger, or using filters to look younger in order to meet a rising demand for this genre.
First point: they're not all adults!
I'm sure that most of you have heard the story of Rose Kalemba, who was raped at 14 and the subsequent videos of that rape were uploaded to Pornhub. Those videos stayed uploaded on Pornhub for over half a year, all with various "teen" related titles. That's not the only case of it happening-- Pornhub has been met with lawsuit after lawsuit by women who've had child porn of them uploaded on the site. These are all presented as being "teen" genre porn.
Second point: if someone is attracted to a 24 year old who's intentionally trying to look prepubescent, they're attracted to prepubsecence.
This is what I like to call a "distinction without a difference". Porn of 24 year old women? Legal. Porn of 12 year olds? Illegal. Porn of 24 year old women who have had surgery to look prepubescent, use filters to edit their bone structure to appear physically young, and wear childrens clothes? Legal... but for all effects and purposes, is simulated porn of a 12 year old. Similar to the issue with lolicon-- a hentai genre that features drawn porn of young children-- a person seeking that content out is seeking out the closest legal thing to child porn they won't get arrested for possessing.
Trigger warning: both of the following links include semi-censored photo examples of these women's content. I feel that linking not only articles about this phenomena, but also articles that gave examples of exactly what they're doing to appear prepubescent, was important to illustrate this point. Please DO NOT click the links in the following paragraph if you would be triggered by that or are a recovering PA reading this post. Thank you.
A camgirl/OnlyFans content creator has recently come under fire for editing her face to the point of looking about 13 or 14 in her porn. She went from 700,000 followers of her content to over 3 MILLION due to the change. This is, again, not a unique occurance. Belle Delphine is another notable person who does this same thing, and has been creating this type of content since she was ACTUALLY 15.
...
Real child porn being posted online under the guise of being legal "teen" porn and adult women changing their appearances to appeal to the demand for younger and younger looking "teen" genre porn, provide the perfect environment for porn addiction to escalate into pedophilia. It's legal, it's easily accessible, it's popular, it's becoming more and more normalized. When the tolerance build starts giving less and less of a dopamine hit from this legal simulated child porn, they escalate into the illegal child porn.
Your PA gaining an interest in "teen" genre porn is the last place to catch the compounding escalation before they start to seek out illegal content.
If you find your PA obsessively watching or seeking out "teen" genre porn content, following teenagers on Instagram, obsessing over young teen girl celebrities, that is an urgent crisis that needs immediate attention. There has been a worrying uptick of posters in this sub talking about pedophilia concerns with their PA-- trust your gut. If there's smoke, there's fire. Recently I gave advice to a poster to report her concerns about "teen" porn to the police, and her PA was arrested for possession of real child porn. 85% of people who consume child porn online also move on to sexually abuse children themselves. Many of the people in this subreddit have children with their PAs.
I'm not trying to scare anyone, but rather just impress upon you the severity of this situation.
...
Realistically, more people here will be secretly having issues or concerns about their PA being a pedophile or having an issue with other illegal content than the people who are publicly posting about it. It's a difficult thing to talk about, and I understand that. It can feel shameful, you might be worried about getting your partner into trouble, you might be uncertain if your worries are valid or if you're just seeing things that aren't there. I understand.
If you don't feel safe posting about what you're going through, please feel free to message me directly. I am not a mandated reporter & I will not try to make you feel bad or guilty over the situation you're in. I will always advise to bring concerns about pedophilia to the police, but I will not do that for you. My priority is helping you figure out what you need and want to do in order to feel safe.

Please bear with me over the next few days while I add more studies, articles, and resources to this post, tweak my phrasing, and add in more information. :) If any links are broken or lead you somewhere funky, let me know.
I hope this helps at least one person or saves at least one child. It would be well worth the time it took to compile all of this & type it out if it helps someone.

2018.04.23 15:44 upbstock correction?

There have been times lately when those swift and painful selloffs across the major U.S. stock indexes have certainly felt like corrections, or at least potential signals that the BIG correction bears having been anticipating for years is finally upon us. But ... really? "If Q1 represents a larger correction, then please tell me where there is evidence that the most valued and overbought sector, tech, has actually corrected," says Sven Henrich of the Northman Trader blog (https://northmantrader.com/2018/04/20/do-or-die-for-tech/). "A correction should leave some evidence that there actually has been one. No, from my perch this means tech has yet to properly correct," he says. Henrich warns that this could turn out to be very pivotal week for the broad market and the technology sector, in particular, given the onslaught of upcoming earnings and the way the charts are shaping up at the moment. Specifically, he pointed to this bearish head-and-shoulders formation -- our chart of the day -- that's sounding an alarm on the Nasdaq 100 . Look familiar? If you've had an eye for patterns like this over the years, it should. Here's what the Nasdaq 100 looked like ahead of the dot-com meltdown: "Freaky, no?" Henrich asks, adding that results from the big tech companies will go a long way in either causing the pattern to repeat or to become invalidated. He pointed specifically to (FB) , Microsoft (MSFT) , Amazon (AMZN) , Google parent Alphabet (GOOGL) and Apple (AAPL) as determining the next move. Read:Can Facebook, Apple and Google keep powering tech? (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/can-facebook-apple-and-google-keep-powering-techs-growth-2018-04-21) "So these big boys have yet to see a sizable correction of any sort as far as I'm concerned, and [this] week may well be a do or die moment for tech," he says. The market No correction this morning. The call The next entity to come under heavy Trump fire? The Federal Reserve, says former Reagan budget director David Stockman of the Contra Corner blog (http://davidstockmanscontracorner.com/sell-the-rips-the-delusions-of-maga-part-3/). "The real culprit behind the economic distress in Flyover America that brought the Donald to the Oval Office," Stockman says, "is a rogue central banking regime." He explains that Trump's fondness for protectionism, low interest and "epic fiscal profligacy" has nothing to offer and "will prove to be a fatal mistake." Stockman warns that "the U.S. economy is an exceedingly fragile house of cards," and "it will buckle like a lawnchair in the face of rising interest rates, a multi-trillion drain of cash from the bond pits and the end of the Fed's price-keeping operations at anything remotely close to current stock index levels." When the unwinding begins and stocks get pummeled, Stockman predicts the Fed will scramble to reinstate some form of QE, but it'll be way too late. "They don't have the dry powder to do the job and, besides, by then the Fed will be facing a relentless and vicious tweetstorm from the East Wing Residence," he wrote in his blog post. "Needless to say, the Donald's inevitable attack on the Fed will smack the boys and girls and robo-traders on Wall Street right between their mulish eyes with the proverbial 2x4." Stockman calls Trump's eventual Fed smackdown "the Orange Swan that looms over the casino," which will only serve to exacerbate losses, as Jerome Powell & Co. will then "wait even longer than otherwise to capitulate and ashcan their normalization campaign -- in order to defend the institutional honor of the Fed." His bottom line: When Trump turns on the Fed, he will be "tapping deep veins of panic that have been dormant since Black Monday in October 1987 ." 2018.03.05 22:07 Hero17 Attracting news media attention to t_d ?

The recent announcement thread got me thinking about this. Seems that most shutdowns of terrible subreddits happen after Reddit gets bad press in the news for them(jailbait, fatpeoplehate, deepfakes).
Is anyone here aware of good avenues to bring media attention to the existence of t_d and the questionable decisions of admins in response to it? Or are there already lots of news articles about t_d and I'm just bad at googling them?
Looks like these two links are a start

Reddit (stylized as reddit, /ˈrɛdɪt/)[5] is an American social news aggregation, web content rating, and discussion website. Reddit's registered community members can submit content, such as text posts or direct links. Registered users can then vote submissions up or down to organize the posts and determine their position on the site's pages. The submissions with the most positive votes appear on the front page or the top of a category. Content entries are organized by areas of interest called "subreddits". The subreddit topics include news, science, gaming, movies, music, books, fitness, food, and image-sharing, among many others. The site's terms of use prohibit behaviors such as harassment, and moderating and limiting harassment has taken substantial resources.[6]
As of 2017, Reddit had 542 million monthly visitors (234 million unique users), ranking #7 most visited web-site in US and #22 in the world.[7] Across 2015, Reddit saw 82.54 billion pageviews, 73.15 million submissions, 725.85 million comments, and 6.89 billion upvotes from its users.[8]
Reddit was founded by University of Virginia roommates Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian in 2005. Condé Nast Publications acquired the site in October 2006. Reddit became a direct subsidiary of Condé Nast's parent company, Advance Publications, in September 2011. As of August 2012, Reddit operates as an independent entity, although Advance is still its largest shareholder.[9] Reddit is based in San Francisco, California. In October 2014, Reddit raised $50 million in a funding round led by Sam Altman and including investors Marc Andreessen, Peter Thiel, Ron Conway, Snoop Dogg, and Jared Leto.[10] Their investment saw the company valued at $500 million.[11][12]

Description Site
The site is a collection of entries submitted by its registered users, essentially a bulletin board system. The name "Reddit" is a play-on-words with the phrase "read it", i.e., "I read it on Reddit."[13] The site's content is divided into numerous categories, and 49 such categories, or "default subreddits", are visible on the front page to new users and those who browse the site without logging in to an account. As of May 2016, these include:[14] Category Subreddits Educational News, Science, Space, DataIsBeautiful, TodayILearned, WorldNews Entertainment Creepy, Documentaries, Gaming, ListenToThis, Movies, Music, NoSleep, Sports, Television, Videos Discussion-based AskReddit, AskScience, Books, ExplainLikeImFive, History, IAmA, TwoXChromosomes Humolight-hearted Funny, InternetIsBeautiful, Jokes, NotTheOnion, ShowerThoughts, TIFU, UpliftingNews Image sharing Art, Aww, EarthPorn, Gifs, MildlyInteresting, OldSchoolCool, PhotoshopBattles, Pics Self-improvement DIY, Food, GetMotivated, LifeProTips, PersonalFinance, Philosophy, WritingPrompts Technology Futurology, Gadgets Meta Announcements, Blog
Note: There are over 11,400 active subreddits[15][16][17] with a default set of 50 subreddits as of February 2016.
When items (links or text posts) are submitted to a subreddit, the users, called "redditors",[18] can vote for or against them (upvote/downvote). Each subreddit has a front page that shows newer submissions that have been rated highly. Redditors can also post comments about the submission, and respond back and forth in a conversation-tree of comments; the comments themselves can also be upvoted and downvoted. The front page of the site itself shows a combination of the highest-rated posts out of all the subreddits a user is subscribed to.
Front-page rank – for both the general front page and for individual subreddits – is determined by the age of the submission, positive ("upvoted") to negative ("downvoted") feedback ratio and the total vote-count.[19] Dozens of submissions cycle through these front pages daily.
The site's logo and its mascot is a line drawing of an alien nicknamed "Snoo". Subreddits often use themed variants of Snoo relevant to the subject.[20]
Although most of the site functions like a bulletin board or message board, each subreddit has the option of having an associated wiki that can provide supplementary material like instructions, recommended reading, or collaboration for real-life events. Users
Registering an account with Reddit is free and does not require an email address to complete. As of June 2015, there were 36 million user accounts.[21] When logged in, Reddit users (known as redditors) have the ability to vote on submissions and comments to increase or decrease their visibility and submit links and comments. Users can also create their own subreddit on a topic of their choosing, and interested users can add it to their frontpage by subscribing to it. For example, as of May 2015, the Wikipedia subreddit – subtitled "the most interesting pages on Wikipedia" – has over 151,000 subscribers.[22] Reddit comments and submissions are occasionally abbreviated and peppered with terms that are understood within (and in many cases also outside) the Reddit community, ranging from OP (for "original poster" – the user who posted the submission being commented upon) to NSFW (for "not safe for work" – indicating the post has graphic or sexually explicit content).[23] Users earn "post karma" and "comment karma" for submitting text posts, link posts, and comments, which accumulate as point values on their user profile. "Post karma" refers to karma points received from text and link posts, while "comment karma" refers to karma points received from comments. Users may also be gifted "Reddit gold" if another user has well received the comment or post, generally due to humorous or high-quality content; this process is known as "gilding." Reddit has also created a system of points called "creddits". Reddit gold "creddits" are like gift certificates: each creddit you have allows you to give one month of Reddit gold to someone else. The points do not lead to a prize as they are meant to stand in as a badge of honor for the user among their peers, although redditors have attempted to redeem their points before.[24]
Reddit also allows submissions that do not link externally. These are called "self posts" or "text submissions". Many discussion-based subreddits allow only text-only submissions such as "AskReddit" – where users are only allowed to pose broad, discussion based questions to the community at large. Self posts previously did not accumulate karma points for the submitter, but as of July, 2016, these text-only posts generate karma.[25] Mister Splashy Pants logo used on November 27, 2007
Reddit communities occasionally coordinate Reddit-external projects such as skewing polls on other websites, such as in 2007 when Greenpeace allowed web users to decide the name of a humpback whale it was tracking. Reddit users voted en masse to name the whale "Mr. Splashy Pants", and Reddit administrators further encouraged this by changing the site logo to a whale during the voting. In December of that year, Mister Splashy Pants was announced as the winner of the competition.[26]
Within the site, redditors commemorate their "cake day" once a year, which is the anniversary of the day the user's account was first created. The "cake day" offers no special benefit, except that a small icon representing a slice of cake appears next to that user's name for 24 hours.[27] Redditors can "friend" one another, which gives a redditor quick access to posting and comments of their friend list. The commenting system and friend system, along with a certain "Reddit ethos" (called reddiquette on Reddit), lend Reddit aspects of a social networking service, though not to the extent of Facebook, Google+, and other websites aimed at providing social networking services. The Reddit community also socializes at meetups held at local parks and bars around the world,[28] and many localized subreddits for local in-person meetings exist. Subreddits
Reddit entries are organized into areas of interest called "subreddits". Originally, the front page was the "main-reddit", and other areas were "subreddits". There is now no longer a single main-reddit. Instead, there are now 50 "default subreddits" dealing with topics such as books, television, and music, and thousands of additional non-default subreddits. The default subreddits are the 50 subreddits which are first recommended to new users to select from to appear on, or via their customizable top menu bars. All new users are initially automatically "subscribed to" the 50 default subreddits, but can then customize their "subscriptions."
Any registered user who has maintained an account for 31 days or more may create a non-default subreddit.[29] There are over 11,400 active total subreddits to peruse,[15][16][17] including the default set of 50 subreddits as of February 2016. The site has a default "Front Page" which contains staff selected popular articles, and also an "All Page" which contains only the very top ranked article/ subreddits as ranked by readers themselves, and which page is accessible via an "All" link at the top of the "Front Page."
In an interview with Memeburn, Reddit GM, Martin noted that the platform's "approach is to give the community moderators or curators as much control as possible so that they can shape and cultivate the type of communities they want".[30] IAmA and AMA
One of the most popular subreddits is IAmA ("I Am A") where a user may post "AMAs" (for "Ask Me Anything"), or similarly "AMAAs" (for "Ask Me Almost/Absolutely Anything") – prompts for others to ask questions about any topic. AMAs are open to all Reddit users, and use the site's comment system for both questions and answers; it is similar to a press conference but online. This subreddit was founded in May 2009.[31] From 2013 to 2015, Victoria Taylor assisted reddit's volunteer community in presenting interviews.[32][33][34]
A number of notable individuals have participated in the IAmA subreddit, including United States President Barack Obama[35][36] (while campaigning for the 2012 election), Dave Grohl,[37] Madonna,[38] Chris Hadfield[39] (who answered questions from the International Space Station), Bill Gates,[40] Ron Paul,[41] Stephen Colbert,[42] Psy, Enya, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rachel Maddow, Robin Williams,[43] Renée Fleming, M. Shadows, Louis C.K., Roger Federer, Larry King, Philip Zimbardo, Bill Nye,[44] Stan Lee, John Mather, David Copperfield, Michael Moore, Spike Lee, Paul Krugman, Danny Boyle, rapper J. Cole,[45] Al Gore, Roger Ebert, Michael Bolton, Gary Johnson, Lawrence Krauss, Jill Stein, Kevin Rudd, Julie Benz,[46] Amanda Palmer,[47] Tim Ferriss,[48] Gordon Ramsay,[49] Peter Dinklage,[50] Chandra Wickramasinghe,[51] Neil deGrasse Tyson,[52] and Bernie Sanders.[53] Donald Trump (during his 2016 Presidential Campaign) had an AMA on /The Donald subreddit.[54] As of April 2015, Barack Obama's AMA is the highest rated on the site;[55] the increased traffic brought down many parts of the website when the AMA occurred on August 29, 2012.[56]
Celebrities participating in IAmAs have seen both positive and negative responses. Woody Harrelson's[57] AMA was criticized after Harrelson declined to answer questions that were unrelated to the movie Rampart he was promoting.[58] In contrast, rapper Snoop Dogg attracted 1.6 million page views[59] after conducting an AMA that provided several candid responses to the community's questions.[60]
Other than Harrelson's, Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra's[61] AMA was criticized for evasiveness when she focused on promoting her upcoming album to the detriment of other questions. A particularly well received AMA of 2014 was that of Peter Dinklage,[62] best known for his role as Tyrion Lannister in the HBO drama series Game of Thrones. Redditors attribute the thread's success to the thoroughness of his responses and the fact that he stayed online much longer than he was expected to so he could spend more time with his fans. The actor departed by commenting:
This feels like being interviewed by a hundred thousand news anchors at once! But much friendlier anchors...who seem to know their material...I really appreciate everyone's enthusiasm and questions. I tried to move another engagement to make more time but it's really hard during shoots. I am going to try to answer a few more short ones now. And remember: If you see me on the street and want a photo, ask! It's just weird when your kid asks for directions.[63]
On July 2, 2015, hundreds of subreddits, including several with over a million subscribers, were set to private by their respective moderators after Reddit's director of talent, Victoria Taylor, was dismissed.[64][65][66][67] Sources close to Reddit cited an increased focus on commercializing AMAs as the most likely reason.[68][69] /science File:American Chemical Society - What Chemists Do - Nathan Allen.webmPlay media Nathan Allen speaks about /science to the American Chemical Society Main article: /science
/science is an Internet forum on Reddit where the community of participants discuss science topics.[70] A popular feature of the forum is "Ask me Anything" (AMA) public discussions.[70] As of 2014, /science attracted 30,000–100,000 visitors per day, making it the largest community-managed science forum and an attractive place to host discussions.[70] April Fools subreddits The Button Main article: The Button (Reddit)
On April Fools' Day 2015, a social experiment was launched in the form of a subreddit called "thebutton". It featured a button and a 60-second countdown timer. User accounts created before that day were eligible to participate. A user could only ever click the button once, or opt not to click it. If a user clicked the button the timer was globally reset to 60 seconds,[71] and the user's "flair" (an icon next to the user's name) changed color. Colors were assigned based on a gradient from purple to red with purple signifying up to 60 seconds and red as low as 0 seconds. The countdown prematurely reached zero several times due to technical problems but eventually expired without further problems on June 5, 2015, after which the subreddit was archived.[72] Robin
On April Fools' Day 2016, a social experiment was launched in the form of a chat widget named Robin. After clicking the "Robin" button, an IRC-like chat window was initially opened with one other redditor and giving a certain time to pick between three options, "Grow," "Stay" and "Abandon".[73] "Grow" would join the chat with another group, "Stay" would close the group chat and create a subreddit with that group as moderators and "Abandon" would close the group chat and everyone goes back to a group of two. History Further information: Timeline of Reddit Co-founder Alexis Ohanian speaking in 2009
In June 2005,[74] Reddit was founded in Medford, Massachusetts by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, both 22-year-old graduates of the University of Virginia.[75] The team expanded to include Christopher Slowe in November 2005. Between November 2005 and January 2006 Reddit merged with Aaron Swartz's company Infogami, and Swartz became an equal owner of the resulting parent company, Not A Bug.[76][77] Condé Nast Publications, owner of Wired, acquired Reddit on October 31, 2006, and the team moved to San Francisco.[78] In January 2007, Swartz was fired.[79]
By the end of 2008, the team had grown to include Erik Martin, Jeremy Edberg,[80] David King,[81] and Mike Schiraldi.[82] In 2009, Huffman and Ohanian moved on to form Hipmunk, recruiting Slowe[83] and King[84] shortly thereafter. In May 2010, Reddit was named in Lead411's "2010 Hottest San Francisco Companies" list.[85] In July 2010, after explosive traffic growth, Reddit introduced Reddit Gold, offering new features for a price of $3.99/month or $29.99/year.[86] Reddit Gold adds a number of features to the interface, including the ability to display more comments on a page, access to the private "lounge" subreddit, and notifications whenever one's username is mentioned in a comment. It's also possible to endow comments or submissions of other users and thereby give a gold membership to them as an anonymous present.[87]
On September 6, 2011, Reddit became operationally independent of Condé Nast, now operating as a separate subsidiary of its parent company, Advance Publications.[88] On January 11, 2012, Reddit announced that it would be participating in a 12-hour sitewide blackout in protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act.[89] The blackout occurred on January 18 and coincided with the blackouts of Wikipedia and several other websites. In May 2012, Reddit joined the Internet Defense League, a group formed to organize future protests.[90] On February 14, 2013, Reddit began accepting the digital currency bitcoin for its Reddit Gold subscription service through a partnership with bitcoin payment processor Coinbase.[91]
In October 2014, Reddit announced Redditmade, a service which allowed moderators to create merchandise for their subreddits. Redditmade closed in February 2015.[92] In November 2014, Chief Executive Yishan Wong resigned and co-founder Ohanian returned as the full-time executive chairman. Ellen Pao, Reddit's business and partnerships strategist became the interim chief executive.[93] On July 10, 2015, Pao resigned and was replaced by Steve Huffman as CEO.[94][95]
In October 2015, Reddit announced a news portal called Upvoted, designed to broaden the reach of Reddit as a standalone site featuring editorial content from Reddit users.[96] In April 2016, Reddit launched a new blocking tool in an attempt to curb online harassment. The tool allows a user to hide posts and comments from selected redditors in addition to blocking private messages from those redditors.[97] The option to block a redditor is done by clicking a button in the inbox. Technology
Reddit was originally written in Common Lisp but was rewritten in Python in December 2005.[4] The reasons given for the switch were wider access to code libraries and greater development flexibility. The Python web framework that former Reddit employee Swartz developed to run the site, web.py, is now available as an open-source project.[98] On June 18, 2008, Reddit became an open source project.[99] With the exception of the anti-spam/cheating portions, all of the code and libraries written for Reddit became freely available on GitHub.[100] As of November 10, 2009, Reddit uses Pylons as its web framework.[101]
As of November 10, 2009, Reddit has decommissioned their physical servers and migrated to Amazon Web Services.[102] Reddit uses PostgreSQL as their primary datastore and is slowly moving to Apache Cassandra, a column-oriented datastore. It uses RabbitMQ for offline processing, HAProxy for load balancing and memcached for caching. In early 2009, Reddit started using jQuery.[103] On June 7, 2010, Reddit staff launched a revamped mobile interface featuring rewritten CSS, a new color scheme, and a multitude of improvements.[104]
On July 21, 2010, Reddit outsourced the Reddit search engine to Flaptor, who used its search product IndexTank.[105] As of July 12, 2012, Reddit uses Amazon CloudSearch.[106] There are several unofficial applications that use the Reddit API in the Google Play store, and F-Droid repository. Examples include: Reddit is Fun,[107] Andreddit,[108] F5, BaconReader,[109] Reddit Sync[110] and an Android tablet specific application called Reddita.[111] There are also several Windows apps used to access Reddit, including unofficial Reddit apps such as ReddHub[112] and Reddit To Go!.[113] An unofficial desktop application Reditr[114] exists that is compatible with Windows, OS X, Linux and ChromeOS.
There are several Reddit applications for iOS. These include Karma, Upvote, iReddit, iPad-specific applications such as Reddzine and Biscuit, and, until April 2016, Alien Blue.[115] In September 2014, an official mobile application for browsing AMA (Ask Me Anything) threads was released for the iOS and Android platforms under the name Ask me Anything.[116] In October 2014, Alien Blue was acquired by Reddit and became the official iOS Reddit app.[117] In April 2016, Reddit released an official application called Reddit: The Official App, which is available on Google Play and the iOS App Store, and Alien Blue was removed from the App Store in favor of the new app.[118] Demographics
According to Reddit's Audience and Demographics page, as of December 2015, 53% of redditors are male and 54% are from the United States.[119] In 2013, Pewinternet stated that 6% of all American adult Internet users have used Reddit; that males were twice as likely to be redditors as females were; and that Reddit's largest age bracket was between the ages of 18 and 29.[120] As of the end of 2016, Reddit is the only major social media platform that does not have a female majority user base.[121] Community and culture
The website is known for its open nature and diverse user community that generate its content.[122] Its demographics allows for wide-ranging subject areas, or main subreddits, that receive much attention, as well as the ability for smaller subreddits to serve more niche purposes. For example, the University of Reddit, a subreddit that exists to communally teach, emerged from the ability to enter and leave the online forum, the "classroom", at will, and classes ranging from computer science to music, to fine art theory exist.[123] The unique possibilities that subreddits provide create new opportunities for raising attention and fostering discussion across many areas. In gaining popularity in terms of unique users per day, Reddit has been a platform for many to raise publicity for a number of causes. And with that increased ability to garner attention and a large audience, users can use one of the largest communities on the Internet for new, revolutionary, and influential purposes.[124]
Its popularity has enabled users to take unprecedented advantage of such a large community. Its innovative socially ranked rating and sorting system drives a method that is useful for fulfilling certain goals of viewership or simply finding answers to interesting questions. User sentiments about the website's function and structure include feelings about the breadth and depth of the discussions on Reddit and how the site makes it easy to discover new and interesting items. Almost all of the user reviews on Alexa.com, which rates Reddit's monthly unique traffic rating 125th in the United States, mention Reddit's "good content" as a likable quality. However, others raise the negative aspects of the potential for Reddit's communities to possess a "hive mind" of sorts,[125] embodying some negative aspects of group interaction theories like crowd psychology and collective consciousness. Philanthropic efforts
Reddit has been known as the instigator of several charity projects, some short and others long-term, in order to benefit others. A selection of major events are outlined below:
In early October 2010, a story was posted on Reddit about a seven-year-old girl, Kathleen Edward, who was in the advanced stages of Huntington's disease. The girl's neighbors were taunting her and her family. Redditors banded together and gave the girl a shopping spree[126][127] at Tree Town Toys, a toy store local to the story owned by a Reddit user. In early December 2010, members of the Christianity subreddit decided to hold a fundraiser[128] and later members of the atheism subreddit decided to give some friendly competition,[129] cross-promoting[130] fundraising drives for Doctors Without Borders and World Vision's Clean Water Fund, respectively. Later, the Islam subreddit joined in, raising money for Islamic Relief. In less than a week, the three communities (as well as the Reddit community at large) raised over $50,000.[131] Most of this was raised by the atheism subreddit, though the smaller Christianity subreddit had a higher average donation amount per subscriber.[132] A similar donation drive in 2011 saw the atheism subreddit raise over $200,000 for charity.[133] Reddit started the largest Secret Santa program in the world, which is still in operation to date. For the 2010 Holiday season, 92 countries were involved in the Secret Santa program. There were 17,543 participants, and $662,907.60 was collectively spent on gift purchases and shipping costs.[134][135][136] In 2014, about 200,000 users from 188 countries participated.[137] Several celebrities have participated in the program, including Bill Gates[138] and Snoop Dogg.[139] Eventually, the Secret Santa program expanded to various other occasions through Redditgifts. Members from Reddit donated over $600,000 to DonorsChoose in support of Stephen Colbert's March to Keep Fear Alive. The donation spree broke previous records for the most money donated to a single cause by the Reddit community and resulted in an interview with Colbert on Reddit.[140] Reddit users donated $185,356 to Direct Relief for Haiti after an earthquake devastated the nation in January 2010.[141] Reddit users donated over $70,000 to the Faraja Orphanage in the first 24 hours to help secure the orphanage after intruders robbed and attacked one of the volunteers, who survived a strike to the head from a machete.[142] In October 2012, "Shitty Watercolour", a popular Redditor known for posting watercolor paintings on the website,[143][144][145] streamed live a 12-hour painting session on YouTube to raise money for charity: water, a non-profit organization which aims to provide potable drinking water in developing countries. Redditors donated a minimum of $10 to have a photo of their choice painted in a 5 by 5 centimetres (2.0 by 2.0 in) square section of large sheets of paper.[146][147] The paint-a-thon raised $2,700.[148] In February 2014, Reddit announced it would be donating 10% of its annual ad revenue to non-profits voted upon by its users.[149] Reddit continued this policy for 2015, donating $82,765 each to Electronic Frontier Foundation, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Doctors Without Borders, Erowid Center, Wikimedia Foundation, Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, NPR, Free Software Foundation, Freedom From Religion Foundation, and Tor Project.[150] In response to the 2015 Nepal earthquake, redditors raised more than $145,000 for Direct Relief and more than $110,000 for MAP International.[151]
Commercial activity
In February 2013, Betabeat published a post that recognized the influx of multi-national corporations like Costco, Taco Bell, Subaru, and McDonald's posting branded content on Reddit that was made to appear as if it was original content from legitimate Reddit users.[152] Reddit's former Director of Communications noted that while a large number of Chief Marketing Officers want to "infiltrate the reddit community on behalf of their brand," she emphasized that "self-promotion is frowned upon" and the site is "100 percent organic."[153][154][155][156] She recommended that advertisers design promotions that "spark conversations and feedback."[157] She recommended that businesses use AMAs to get attention for public figures but cautioned "It is important to approach AMAs carefully and be aware that this may not be a fit for every project or client."[158] Nissan ran a successful Branded content promotion offering users free gifts to publicize a new car,[159][160] though the company was later ridiculed for suspected astroturfing when the CEO only answered puff piece questions on the site.[161][162] Taylor described these situations as "high risk" noting "We try hard to educate people that they have to treat questions that may seem irreverent or out of left field the same as they would questions about the specific project they are promoting."[163]
Reddit's users are more privacy-conscious than on other websites, using tools like AdBlock and proxies,[164] and they hate "feeling manipulated by brands" but respond well to "content that begs for intelligent viewers and participants."[165] Lauren Orsini writes in ReadWrite that "Reddit's huge community is the perfect hype machine for promoting a new movie, a product release, or a lagging political campaign" but "very specific set of etiquette. Redditors don't want to advertise for you, they want to talk to you."[166] Journalists have used the site as a basis for stories, though they are advised by the site's policies to respect that "reddit's communities belong to their members" and to seek proper attribution for people's contributions.[167]
Reddit announced that they would begin using VigLink to redirect affiliate links in June 2016.[168] Reddit effect Main article: Slashdot effect
Also known as the "Slashdot effect", the Reddit effect occurs when a smaller website has a high influx of traffic after being linked to on Reddit.[169] It is also called the "Reddit Hug of Death" among the website's users. Because Reddit is such a large site, the traffic is immense and can easily crash smaller sites. In order for users to see crashed websites, several Reddit bots have been created that take a snapshot of the website before large amounts of traffic flood the affected website. "Restoring Truthiness" campaign
As a response to Glenn Beck's August 28, 2010, Restoring Honor rally (heavily promoted by him in his Fox News broadcasts during the summer), in September 2010 Reddit users started a movement to persuade satirist Stephen Colbert to have a counter-rally in Washington, D.C.[170] The movement, which came to be called "Restoring Truthiness", was started by user mrsammercer, in a post where he described waking up from a dream in which Stephen Colbert was holding a satirical rally in D.C.[171] He writes, "This would be the high water mark of American satire. Half a million people pretending to suspend all rational thought in unison. Perfect harmony. It'll feel like San Francisco in the late 60s, only we won't be able to get any acid."
The idea resonated with the Reddit community, which launched a campaign to bring the event to life. Over $600,000[172] was raised for charity to gain the attention of Colbert. The campaign was mentioned on-air several times, and when the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear was held in Washington, D.C. on October 30, 2010, thousands of redditors made the journey.[173]
During a post-rally press conference, Reddit co-founder Ohanian asked, "What role did the Internet campaign play in convincing you to hold this rally?" Jon Stewart responded by saying that, though it was a very nice gesture, the two had already thought of the idea prior and the deposit on using the National Mall was already paid during the summer, so it acted mostly as a "validation of what we were thinking about attempting".[174] In a message to the Reddit community, Colbert later added, "I have no doubt that your efforts to organize and the joy you clearly brought to your part of the story contributed greatly to the turnout and success."[175] Controversies See also: Controversial Reddit communities and Michael Brutsch
The website generally lets moderators on individual subreddits make editorial decisions about what content to allow, and has a history of permitting some subreddits dedicated to controversial content.[176] Many of the default pages are highly moderated, with the "science" subreddit banning climate change denialism,[177] and the "news" subreddit banning opinion pieces and columns.[178] Reddit has changed its site-wide editorial policies several times, sometimes in reaction to controversies.[179][180][181][182] Reddit has had a history of giving a platform to objectionable but legal content, and in 2011, news media covered the way that jailbait was being shared on the site before the site changed their policies to explicitly ban "suggestive or sexual content featuring minors".[183] Following some controversial incidents of Internet vigilantism, Reddit introduced a strict rule against the publication of non-public personally-identifying information via the site (colloquially known as doxxing). Those who break the rule are subject to a site-wide ban, and their posts and even entire communities may be removed for breaking the rule. 2010
On December 16, 2010, a redditor named Matt posted a link describing how he has donated a kidney, and included a JustGive link to encourage users to give donations to the American Cancer Society.[184] After an initially positive reaction, Reddit users began to become suspicious of Matt's intentions, and suggested that he was keeping the donations for himself. Users telephoned his home and he received death threats. Matt eventually proved that he was genuine by uploading his doctor's records.[185] 2011
On October 18, 2011, an IT manager submitted a post to the subreddit "gameswap" offering Redditors to trade one of 312 codes he had been given for the game Deus Ex: Human Revolution.[186] A group of users obtained his personal details, and began to blackmail him for the codes.[187] The Monday after uploading the post, he received 138 threatening phone calls both at home and at his job, and by the end of the day he had been fired.[188] 2013
Following the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, Reddit faced criticism after users wrongly identified a number of people as suspects.[189] Notable among misidentified bombing suspects was Sunil Tripathi, a student reported missing before the bombings took place. A body reported to be Sunil's was found in Providence River in Rhode Island on April 25, 2013, according to Rhode Island Health Department. The cause of death was not immediately known, but authorities said they did not suspect foul play.[190] The family later confirmed Tripathi's death was a result of suicide.[191] Reddit general manager Martin later issued an apology for this behavior, criticizing the "online witch hunts and dangerous speculation" that took place on the website.[192] The incident was later referenced in the season 5 episode of the CBS TV series The Good Wife titled "Whack-a-Mole,"[193] as well as The Newsroom.[194][195]
In late October 2013, the moderators of the "politics" subreddit banned a large group of websites. Many were left wing opinion websites, such as Mother Jones, The Huffington Post, Salon, Alternet, Rawstory, The Daily Kos, Truthout, Media Matters, and ThinkProgress as well as some popular progressive blog sites, such as Democratic Underground and Crooks and Liars. They also banned a number of right wing sites—Drudge Report, Breitbart, The Daily Caller, Dailypaul, Power Line, and Reason. Salon reported that "the section's moderators explained in a post on Tuesday, the goal is 'to reduce the number of blogspam submissions and sensationalist titles.' The purge, the moderators explained, is also aimed at sites that provide lots of "bad journalism."[196] The December 2013 list of banned websites has been modified since late October, and sites with original content, such as Mother Jones and The Huffington Post, are allowed.[197] Moderators also banned RT, which moderators stated was due to vote manipulation and spam, though one moderator stated that he wanted RT banned because it is Kremlin backed.[198][199] 2014
In August 2014, photos from the 2014 celebrity photo hack were widely disseminated across the site.[200][201] A dedicated subreddit, "TheFappening," was created for this purpose,[202] and contained links to most if not all of the criminally obtained explicit images.[203][204][205][206][207] Some images of Liz Lee and McKayla Maroney from the leak were identified by redditors and outside commentators as child pornography because the photos were taken when the women were underage.[208] The subreddit was banned on September 6.[209] The scandal led to wider criticisms concerning the website's administration from The Verge and The Daily Dot.[210][211]
Also in August 2014, moderators and administrators censored a sizeable amount of content related to the GamerGate controversy; one thread in the "gaming" subreddit had almost 24,000 comments removed.[212] Multiple subreddits were deleted by administrators for voicing opinions on Zoe Quinn, Anita Sarkeesian, Brianna Wu and similarly important GamerGate controversy figures.[213] The subreddit "ZoeQuinnDiscussion" was banned for violating the Reddit rules.[214] Administrators defended this response when questioned, blaming 4chan for raiding threads and causing harm. This was debated by some redditors.[215] An anonymous subreddit moderator claims he was removed for leaking correspondence between himself and Zoe Quinn.[216] On December 18, 2014, Reddit took the unusual step of banning a subreddit, "SonyGOP," that was being used to distribute hacked Sony files.[217] 2015
After Ellen Pao became CEO, she was initially a target of criticism by users who objected to her lawsuit.[218] Later on June 10, 2015, Reddit shut down the 150,000-subscriber "fatpeoplehate" subreddit and four others citing issues related to harassment.[219] This move was seen as very controversial; some commenters said that the bans went too far, while others said that the bans did not go far enough.[220] One of the latter complaints concerned a subreddit that was "expressing support" for the perpetrator of the Charleston church shooting.[221] Responding to the accusations of "skewed enforcement", Reddit reaffirmed their commitment to free expression and stated that "There are some subreddits with very little viewership that get highlighted repeatedly for their content, but those are a tiny fraction of the content on the site."
On July 2, 2015, Reddit began experiencing a series of blackouts as moderators set popular subreddit communities to private, in an event dubbed "AMAgeddon," a portmanteau of AMA ("ask me anything") and Armageddon. This was done in protest of the recent firing of Victoria Taylor, an administrator who helped organize citizen-led interviews with famous people on the popular "Ask me Anything" subreddit. Organizers of the blackout also expressed resentment about the recent severance of the communication between Reddit and the moderators of subreddits.[222] The blackout intensified on July 3 when former community manager David Croach gave an AMA about being fired. Before deleting his posts, he stated that Ellen Pao dismissed him with one year of health coverage when he had cancer and did not recover quickly enough.[223][224] Following this, a Change.org petition to remove Pao as CEO of Reddit Inc. reached over 200,000 signatures.[225][226][227] Pao posted a response on July 3 as well as an extended version of it on July 6 in which she apologized for bad communication and not delivering on promises. She also apologized on behalf of the other administrators and noted that problems already existed over the past several years.[228][229][230][231] On July 10, Pao resigned as CEO and was replaced by former CEO and co-founder Steve Huffman.[94][232]

2016.11.15 07:13 izmar Large self-posts hang when opening

Hey everyone. This is the second time I've ran into this bug and decided to share. On extremely large self-posts the app hangs for a second before it opens to the post -- whether you tap or 3D Touch it.
On 2.8 beta, iOS 10.1.1, iPhone 6s+
Also, as I'm making this post another bug popped up. When a post (and maybe a comment too?) contains an extremely large amount of text, the input window eventually slows to a crawl making it impossible to continue writing.
Copy pasted the Reddit Wikipedia page to make this post a living example.
In June 2005,[72] Reddit was founded in Medford, Massachusetts by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, both 22-year-old graduates of the University of Virginia.[73] The team expanded to include Christopher Slowe in November 2005. Between November 2005 and January 2006 Reddit merged with Aaron Swartz's company Infogami, and Swartz became an equal owner of the resulting parent company, Not A Bug.[74][75] Condé Nast Publications, owner of Wired, acquired Reddit on October 31, 2006, and the team moved to San Francisco.[76] In January 2007, Swartz was fired.[77]
By the end of 2008, the team had grown to include Erik Martin, Jeremy Edberg,[78] David King,[79] and Mike Schiraldi.[80] In 2009, Huffman and Ohanian moved on to form Hipmunk, recruiting Slowe[81] and King[82] shortly thereafter. In May 2010, Reddit was named in Lead411's "2010 Hottest San Francisco Companies" list.[83] In July 2010, after explosive traffic growth, Reddit introduced Reddit Gold, offering new features for a price of $3.99/month or $29.99/year.[84] Reddit Gold adds a number of features to the interface, including the ability to display more comments on a page, access to the private "lounge" subreddit, and notifications whenever one's username is mentioned in a comment. It's also possible to endow comments or submissions of other users and thereby give a gold membership to them as an anonymous present.[85]
On September 6, 2011, Reddit became operationally independent of Condé Nast, now operating as a separate subsidiary of its parent company, Advance Publications.[86] On January 11, 2012, Reddit announced that it would be participating in a 12-hour sitewide blackout in protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act.[87] The blackout occurred on January 18 and coincided with the blackouts of Wikipedia and several other websites. In May 2012, Reddit joined the Internet Defense League, a group formed to organize future protests.[88] On February 14, 2013, Reddit began accepting the digital currency bitcoin for its Reddit Gold subscription service through a partnership with bitcoin payment processor Coinbase.[89]
In October 2014, Reddit announced Redditmade, a service which allowed moderators to create merchandise for their subreddits. Redditmade closed in February 2015.[90] In November 2014, Chief Executive Yishan Wong resigned and co-founder Ohanian returned as the full-time executive chairman. Ellen Pao, Reddit's business and partnerships strategist became the interim chief executive.[91] On July 10, 2015, Pao resigned and was replaced by Steve Huffman as CEO.[92][93]
In October 2015, Reddit announced a news portal called Upvoted, designed to broaden the reach of Reddit as a standalone site featuring editorial content from Reddit users.[94] In April 2016, Reddit launched a new blocking tool in an attempt to curb online harassment. The tool allows a user to hide posts and comments from selected redditors in addition to blocking private messages from those redditors.[95] The option to block a redditor is done by clicking a button in the inbox.
Technology
Reddit was originally written in Common Lisp but was rewritten in Python in December 2005.[4] The reasons given for the switch were wider access to code libraries and greater development flexibility. The Python web framework that former Reddit employee Swartz developed to run the site, web.py, is now available as an open-source project.[96] On June 18, 2008, Reddit became an open source project.[97] With the exception of the anti-spam/cheating portions, all of the code and libraries written for Reddit became freely available on GitHub.[98] As of November 10, 2009, Reddit uses Pylons as its web framework.[99]
As of November 10, 2009, Reddit has decommissioned their physical servers and migrated to Amazon Web Services.[100] Reddit uses PostgreSQL as their primary datastore and is slowly moving to Apache Cassandra, a column-oriented datastore. It uses RabbitMQ for offline processing, HAProxy for load balancing and memcached for caching. In early 2009, Reddit started using jQuery.[101] On June 7, 2010, Reddit staff launched a revamped mobile interface featuring rewritten CSS, a new color scheme, and a multitude of improvements.[102]
On July 21, 2010, Reddit outsourced the Reddit search engine to Flaptor, who used its search product IndexTank.[103] As of July 12, 2012, Reddit uses Amazon CloudSearch.[104] There are several unofficial applications that use the Reddit API in the Google Play store, and F-Droid repository. Examples include: Reddit is Fun,[105] Andreddit,[106] F5, BaconReader,[107] Reddit Sync[108] and an Android tablet specific application called Reddita.[109] There are also several Windows apps used to access Reddit, including unofficial Reddit apps such as ReddHub[110] and Reddit To Go!.[111] An unofficial desktop application Reditr[112] exists that is compatible with Windows, OS X, Linux and ChromeOS.
There are several Reddit applications for iOS. These include Karma, Upvote, iReddit, iPad-specific applications such as Reddzine and Biscuit, and, until April 2016, Alien Blue.[113] In September 2014, an official mobile application for browsing AMA (Ask Me Anything) threads was released for the iOS and Android platforms under the name Ask me Anything.[114] In October 2014, Alien Blue was acquired by Reddit and became the official iOS Reddit app.[115] In April 2016, Reddit released an official application called Reddit: The Official App, which is available on Google Play and the iOS App Store, and Alien Blue was removed from the App Store in favor of the new app.[116]
The website is known for its open nature and diverse user community that generate its content.[119] Its demographics allows for wide-ranging subject areas, or main subreddits, that receive much attention, as well as the ability for smaller subreddits to serve more niche purposes. For example, the University of Reddit, a subreddit that exists to communally teach, emerged from the ability to enter and leave the online forum, the "classroom", at will, and classes ranging from computer science to music, to fine art theory exist.[120] The unique possibilities that subreddits provide create new opportunities for raising attention and fostering discussion across many areas. In gaining popularity in terms of unique users per day, Reddit has been a platform for many to raise publicity for a number of causes. And with that increased ability to garner attention and a large audience, users can use one of the largest communities on the Internet for new, revolutionary, and influential purposes.[121]
However, others raise the negative aspects of the potential for Reddit's communities to possess a "hive mind" of sorts,[122] embodying some negative aspects of group interaction theories like crowd psychology and collective consciousness.

The website generally lets moderators on individual subreddits make editorial decisions about what content to allow, and has a history of permitting some subreddits dedicated to controversial content.[173] Many of the default pages are highly moderated, with the "science" subreddit banning climate change denialism,[174] and the "news" subreddit banning opinion pieces and columns.[175] Reddit has changed its site-wide editorial policies several times, sometimes in reaction to controversies.[176][177][178][179] Reddit has had a history of giving a platform to objectionable but legal content, and in 2011, news media covered the way that jailbait was being shared on the site before the site changed their policies to explicitly ban "suggestive or sexual content featuring minors".[180] Following some controversial incidents of Internet vigilantism, Reddit introduced a strict rule against the publication of non-public personally-identifying information via the site (colloquially known as doxxing). Those who break the rule are subject to a site-wide ban, and their posts and even entire communities may be removed for breaking the rule.
2010 On December 16, 2010, a redditor named Matt posted a link describing how he has donated a kidney, and included a JustGive link to encourage users to give donations to the American Cancer Society.[181] After an initially positive reaction, Reddit users began to become suspicious of Matt's intentions, and suggested that he was keeping the donations for himself. Users telephoned his home and he received death threats. Matt eventually proved that he was genuine by uploading his doctor's records.[182]
2011 On October 18, 2011, an IT manager submitted a post to the subreddit "gameswap" offering Redditors to trade one of 312 codes he had been given for the game Deus Ex: Human Revolution.[183] A group of users obtained his personal details, and began to blackmail him for the codes.[184] The Monday after uploading the post, he received 138 threatening phone calls both at home and at his job, and by the end of the day he had been fired.[185]
2013 Following the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, Reddit faced criticism after users wrongly identified a number of people as suspects.[186] Notable among misidentified bombing suspects was Sunil Tripathi, a student reported missing before the bombings took place. A body reported to be Sunil's was found in Providence River in Rhode Island on April 25, 2013, according to Rhode Island Health Department. The cause of death was not immediately known, but authorities said they did not suspect foul play.[187] The family later confirmed Tripathi's death was a result of suicide.[188] Reddit general manager Martin later issued an apology for this behavior, criticizing the "online witch hunts and dangerous speculation" that took place on the website.[189] The incident was later referenced in the season 5 episode of the CBS TV series The Good Wife titled "Whack-a-Mole,"[190] as well as The Newsroom.[191][192]
Salon reported that "the section's moderators explained in a post on Tuesday, the goal is 'to reduce the number of blogspam submissions and sensationalist titles.' The purge, the moderators explained, is also aimed at sites that provide lots of "bad journalism."[193] The December 2013 list of banned websites has been modified since late October, and sites with original content, such as Mother Jones and The Huffington Post, are allowed.[194] Moderators also banned RT, which moderators stated was due to vote manipulation and spam, though one moderator stated that he wanted RT banned because it is Kremlin backed.[195][196]
2014 In August 2014, photos from the 2014 celebrity photo hack were widely disseminated across the site.[197][198] A dedicated subreddit, "TheFappening," was created for this purpose,[199] and contained links to most if not all of the criminally obtained explicit images.[200][201][202][203][204] Some images of Liz Lee and McKayla Maroney from the leak were identified by redditors and outside commentators as child pornography because the photos were taken when the women were underage.[205] The subreddit was banned on September 6.[206] The scandal led to wider criticisms concerning the website's administration from The Verge and The Daily Dot.[207][208]
Also in August 2014, moderators and administrators censored a sizeable amount of content related to the GamerGate controversy; one thread in the "gaming" subreddit had almost 24,000 comments removed.[209] Multiple subreddits were deleted by administrators for voicing opinions on Zoe Quinn, Anita Sarkeesian, Brianna Wu and similarly important GamerGate controversy figures.[210] The subreddit "ZoeQuinnDiscussion" was banned for violating the Reddit rules.[211] Administrators defended this response when questioned, blaming 4chan for raiding threads and causing harm. This was debated by some redditors.[212] An anonymous subreddit moderator claims he was removed for leaking correspondence between himself and Zoe Quinn.[213] On December 18, 2014, Reddit took the unusual step of banning a subreddit, "SonyGOP," that was being used to distribute hacked Sony files.[214]
2015 After Ellen Pao became CEO, she was initially a target of criticism by users who objected to her lawsuit.[215] Later on June 10, 2015, Reddit shut down the 150,000-subscriber "fatpeoplehate" subreddit and four others citing issues related to harassment.[216] This move was seen as very controversial; some commenters said that the bans went too far, while others said that the bans did not go far enough.[217] One of the latter complaints concerned a subreddit that was "expressing support" for the perpetrator of the Charleston church shooting.[218] Responding to the accusations of "skewed enforcement", Reddit reaffirmed their commitment to free expression and stated that "There are some subreddits with very little viewership that get highlighted repeatedly for their content, but those are a tiny fraction of the content on the site."
Organizers of the blackout also expressed resentment about the recent severance of the communication between Reddit and the moderators of subreddits.[219] The blackout intensified on July 3 when former community manager David Croach gave an AMA about being fired. Before deleting his posts, he stated that Ellen Pao dismissed him with one year of health coverage when he had cancer and did not recover quickly enough.[220][221] Following this, a Change.org petition to remove Pao as CEO of Reddit Inc. reached over 200,000 signatures.[222][223][224] Pao posted a response on July 3 as well as an extended version of it on July 6 in which she apologized for bad communication and not delivering on promises. She also apologized on behalf of the other administrators and noted that problems already existed over the past several years.[225][226][227][228] On July 10, Pao resigned as CEO and was replaced by former CEO and co-founder Steve Huffman.[92][229]

2016.10.28 23:18 BuckRowdy Subreddit Reactivated

Do you remember a user named Violentacrez? He started this subreddit about 6 years ago and after the Jailbait controversy everything he created was banned. A month ago I asked for this sub to be reactivated and I was just granted the request. I have some plans for what I would like to do here, but i would love to hear what you would like to see here. I was working on a fact or fiction thread and a rough draft of it is ready. The other JonBenet focused sub is good, but it blew up so fast that there was too much duplicate discussion. It's tedious to see multiple posts on the same item in a given week. Discussion is too fragmented. So I asked to reactivate this sub and now it's back.
I have set up some text flair. I didn't really feel like it was appropriate to create image-based flair but if enough people think it's a good idea then we can revisit that idea. For now, I have created a few flairs for you based on the common acronyms in this case. If one of those doesn't suit you, you can write your own. The only thing I would ask is that you refrain from abusive language in those flairs.
Both Intruder and Ramsey theorists are welcome. Let's have a place where both sides feel comfortable discussing the case. If you want an RDI echo chamber, there are other places for that.
On that note, let's keep the discussion civil. There is absolutely no reason to demean or belittle someone who holds a different opinion than yours. What does it even accomplish?
I have plans to create a wiki where we can import information on the case from other sites so that it's all in one place. What would happen if acandyrose or the case encyclopedia went offline? I want to get some of that stuff here to preserve it as well as centralize those things.
This sub is for us. What would you like to see here?

*15 June: a WO thread about an almost-forgotten, major Reddit and Digg troll, "Nolibs". Who turned out to still be active, after 10+ years of being "banned". *"In case Reddit is demolished by the Feds for hiding child porn or having a private, hidden Al-Qaeda message board, this is what we know about this group of mostly-ex-Digg members who run an ungodly number of Reddit message boards ("subreddits") and troll an unknown number of "Redditors." All information came from the /nolibswatch subreddit, so be aware that NLW is pro-Libertarian, while the Crew is pro-war conservative Republican or blue-dog Democrat. The grandfather of this annoyance society is "Nolibs" who was on Digg years ago." *"Can you pull back a bit and give us the 'big picture' view, in other words, what is it they do, why is it bad, why should we care?"
**"Trolling, setting up commenters and then banning them, karma-whoring, wasting space with dead spite subreddits, stock Internet psychopathic behavior. They treat Reddit as their own private playground like Michael Brutsch (aka "Violentacrez"), except it's politics instead of grossout photos. If Reddit sinks these scumbags will go elsewhere, probably under premutations of their present handles, and do the exact same thing." http://wikipediocracy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=4826 http://therattingtonpost.blogspot.com/2010/08/digg-and-its-assorted-varieties-of.html

After that the dam broke; accusations that the administration was creating a second Digg, and every crazy rant under the sun:"
**"14,425 comments, probably 14,400 complaining, and the rest would be Kim Jong Deimorz saying "fuck you" to redditors, and the few that agree to this. I'm starting to think that Deimorz was in charge of the Digg change or something."

*6 October: Fired Reddit employee posts on the "AMA" section that he's confused about how Reddit makes a profit. He also mentioned having just been fired by Reddit. 2014.10.29 13:39 loony636 Ethics-obsessed Gamergate encourages Amazon to boycott Gawker ... because Gawker exposed their unethical working conditions. Bonus: Operation 'Baby Seal' breakdown

So, in the ongoing struggle of things that literally having nothing to do with video games at all, the top stickied post on KiA asks supporters to encourage Google (which supplies their ads) and Amazon (which I presume supplies their hosting) to boycott Gawker.
I'm not even going to begin on how singularly unethical (not to mention a breach of the 'Terms of Service' they point to) for service providers like Google and Amazon to start pulling their services if they didn't like what their consumers were doing with it (not because it's illegal, but just because it's something they didn't like). Combine that with the fact that none of the "wrongdoing" (amounting to a couple of tweets) was actually done on their servers, it seems difficult to justify a boycott.
But who am I kidding.
The main reason explaining the likely success of this measure is in two recent articles run on Gawker's main site (aptly named, 'Gawker') which outlined a number of complaints of current employees of Amazon. In short, working at Amazon sucks.
Maybe it's a little far to say that Amazon was acting unethically, but to say to Company A that they should boycott Company B because of its lack of ethics, and that the main reason they should do so is because Company B exposed Company A's lack of ethics is probably itself the most egregious violation of ethics I've ever seen. That is genuine corruption; using the fact that one of your subsidiaries happens to supply products to a company to force them to agree with you is genuinely a corrupt thing to do.
Operation Baby Seal
I'll be honest, I've got a lot of other things to do with my life than watch Gamergate unfold, but I like to keep up to date with events because it's usually hilariously entertaining.
But I'd never seen Operation Baby Seal until now. I just thought it was the same as Operation Disrespectful Nod.
Anyway, the Wiki outlines that Gawker should be specifically targeted because of their breach of Amazon and Google's terms of service, which would be great if it had anything to do with ethics in video game journalism.
Ethics guys.
Let's step through it:
do not mention Gamergate
Auspicious start. At least they're conscious that their name is totally toxic.
Nudes
Let's move past the fact that Reddit, this very website, had whole subreddits devoted to /thefappening, by far the largest leak of this kind. And let's move past the fact that many of these users oppose Gawker because of their past connection to the removal of /jailbait.
I actually do believe that Gawker is awful in reposting those stolen photos. But none of the links actually feature mature content; they're all censored. If the photos were consensually put online, there would be no problem with them at all, and there's nothing relevant in the links about that form of content.
Violent content
Hilarity. The links are all to Sam Biddle's tweets.
Except for one about Jezebel celebrating its editors slapping their partners. I don't think it's acceptance for anyone to hurt another person, and obviously that article is pretty toxic, but again, not a violation of the TOS.
Hate Speech
This one made me laugh openly. Deeply and openly.
Not in the least because one of the articles supports the LGBT-based boycott of Chick-fil-a. And the one about the Firefox CEO. Are they saying that's hate speech?
Wait yes, they are. Oh wow.
Illegal content
The rest of it's pretty tame. A few allegations of breached copyright here, etc. Getting sued for something ≠ a criminal offfence, guys. Also, you can't claim that something is a breach of the law when they haven't been punished for it.
Also sorry, they claim that they wanted someone to give them Jane Pratt's stolen nudes. However, she's a model who says it's "sad" that none of her photos are in the public domain.
tl;dr Video game ethics.

23,263 readers preserving the past for 10 months!
Modern museums cover just about everything there is to see, from fire trucks and toilets all the way to spies and Pez. But despite their differences, each museum displays what it does for the same reason: they firmly believe that their museum holds a historical, scientific, artistic, or cultural interest to their respective communities and beyond. They are living encyclopedias, roadmaps of history, and culture unearthed for all to admire and enjoy.
/MuseumOfReddit is no different. Here, you can find the touchstones that have arguably molded reddit into what it is today:
Legendary posts such the Spanish-related Inquisition, the Novelty League Assembly and the battle between watercolor and sketch.
Sources of controversy, such as the breakdown within the mods of /atheism, the Boston Bombing debacle and ruins of the infamous "Ask a Rapist" thread.
The uppest of upvotes, and the downest of downvotes.
And trends that still continue to this day, including Cat Facts, Tom Cruise, and Bae Caught Me Slippin.
Even as I've been writing this, I've been consistently distracted by the multitude of exhibitions of wit, confusion, malice and hilarity that can suck you in without a moment's hesitation. Whether it's funny or serious, a start of a trend or a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence, you'll find it within the doors of /MuseumOfReddit. There's no cost to enter, and it's open 24/7. So whether you come to laugh, learn, or simply gaze in awe at the underpinnings of reddit as we know it, one thing remains the same: this hike through history is sure to leave you breathless.
But let's see what the historians themselves have to say, shall we?

1. Tell us a little about yourself.

UnholyDemigod I'm a 26 year old dude from Australia. I'm currently looking for a carpentry apprenticeship. I'm quite negative, as I get pissed off very easily, so you've probably seen me complaining about stuff.
KennyLog-in I'm a 32 year old housewife that enjoys reddit and organization.
davidreiss666 I'm sort of Reddit fixture. I've been around a while and mod a few subreddits.

2. How did you get involved with MuseumOfReddit?

UnholyDemigod I started it after seeing a lot of threads based on favourite reddit moments, and people making references to those moments by making relevant quotes ("today you...tomorrow me" etc). I wanted to store all these posts and comments in one place so people could easly find them, hence the directory.
KennyLog-in I applied to help UnholyDemigod because I feel the museum can be useful for new users looking to know about reddit before their time as well as be entertaining for any user. Reddit has a lot of content and this sub helps record the big parts.
davidreiss666 I was asked to mod here about a month ago. Mainly because I'm sort of a Reddit fixture and remember where the super secret backroom / bar is at.

3. What lessons have you learned from browsing or modding MuseumOfReddit?

UnholyDemigod That people like nostalgia and history. Many things posted are about certain events, like /jailbait being banned, or the boston bombing scandal that people are looking to learn about, and having to read up on those posts in order to compile them into one has been interesting.
KennyLog-in This format works much better than my /LibraryofReddit.

4. Tell us about your community!

2014.03.14 05:20 NekroTor You, The Hidden Wiki, and why you should use All You're Wiki until (IF) something better comes along

From first look of the "new supposed unofficial Wiki" (or so goes the consensus),
"Pill - Beats By Dre" ad (not even an .onion link, it leads directly to JPG on postimg.org) is spammed in the Video - Movies / TV, along with other shitty spam image links.
A link that shall go unnamed is the very first link in the Forums / Boards / Chans section, it's an obvious fed honeypot for jailbait/nn child "models" and it's not even an .onion link.
Sites that have been down for ages are linked, some are tagged as "down" but have still not been removed.
TorShops, the biggest .onion scammer on the entire network, is clearly linked in the Hosting / Web / File / Image section.
Most of the links in the commercial section are scams, many are affiliated with TorShops.
And while registrations are open, editing privs are closed. Open editing privs usually result in vandalism anyways, so it comes down to the admins/janitors to clean up links and filter out the bad from the good.
I help run AYW with a couple other people, the URL is the first link in the sidebar. We need other Wikis; wikis that are innovative in some way with organization and owned by capable and dedicated onion denizens. As such a .05 BTC bounty is being presented by me for anyone who creates a new wiki that isn't total shit. Bounty will be rewarded after 1 month of continuous uptime.

How much say does SR have for getting people trade banned by Valve? By affiliation, do you mean since we started showing Valve's tags? We are not officially affiliated with Valve, though I wish we were. If that's changed, no one has told me! But I don't think we've really changed anything much since we started showing their tags- most of our changes come from demands and evolutions made due to the fluidity of the trading community so that we can rise to meet its needs.
Do SR Admins have access to all the investigative tools Valve has? No, and none. I wish we did- it would make my life like 1000x easier. I would process scam reports SO much faster if I didn't have to check every image to make sure it wasn't fake- especially when it comes to inventory history screenshots. Scam reports would go so much quicker if I had access to even a fraction of their tools.
Why are there so many Quickbuyers on your sites? All of them, "BUYING QUICKSELLS DONT OFFER B/Os" and all that. Tf2 community.
Having the amount of users that we do means that we're always going to attract some bad cookies. That's all I'm going to say.
We forbid quickbuys at Bazaar.tf. Such behavior has become far too cancerous. So far, it's been working and the only complaints we get are from quickbuyers.
There's a scam taking place repeatedly, involving the theft of thousands of dollars a week, and which the trading community seems ill-equpped to deal with. But, we can place warnings on our websites and encourage everyone to report any suspicious behavior. We'll then file scam reports on SR. A scammer mark will at least hinder there ability to trade a great deal.
This is the mass purchase of hundreds of keys (and other items) from the Mann Co store and Dota 2 Store, using stolen credit card numbers or other fraudulent methods. These keys are sometimes bought and sold or traded for profit within a day or two by traders who are respected members of the community, including a few community admins. I've seen a few of the biggest, most popular, traders with hundreds of these keys. I can't say for certain that they're aware of the source, but if they're doing this often, then they would have to be pretty damn stupid not to have figured it out. (Many other traders buy these suspicious keys, of course, not just big traders and community admins) But more important than that, I don't think we should ignore the more serious issue of this trading community being used to launder cash for credit card theft gangs, and profiting from some really unpleasant illegal activity. And, any idea why Valve isn't reacting faster to shut down the key sellers, when they seem so obvious? Well, We cant shut it down for the same reason Valve can't shut them down. There is no proof that the credit cards are stolen, and there is no proof that they are "scammers" before valve actually looses the money from the credit card companies.
True, but proof isn't needed to take action. Well I guess, but then again it is harder for us to sniff these users out. I guess I could try to make Sneeza post an announcement about it, warning people to not buy the keys and report all of these trades. Yeah but we need SOMETHING. I think it also comes down to the fact that we're so busy that we don't notice these trends so we need awesome people like you to message a community admin and say, "765888 is an obvious carder" etc. I have marked these accounts when I get reports like this.
SteamRep, TF2OP, and SourceOP, frequently issue (reversible) bans or cautions (for SR) based on suspicious activity, not firm evidence.
Valve frequently trade locks people based on circumstantial evidence, and then investigates afterwards.
Why do you guys ban people who are trying to shoo away the sharks? Somebody wanted to ask this and I agree with them. Why? We just want to help. All you have to do is report their trade. Most people spam their trade with comments like "STAY AWAY" and things that are unnecessary. It's still spam, even if you're trying to do the right thing. Just report and ignore, simple as that.
Ah, TF2 Outpost. Directly quoted this from someone so I forgot to mention that. There is a difference between "shooing away sharks" and just being rude and disrupting their trades. We always tell people to add admins or report trades instead of doing things yourself.
But the times I've reported trades nothing has happened. I once reported someone putting up their burning Scout unusual on the left hand side and regular 2012 festives on the right hand side, whilst the notes indicated it was a 'lowest offer wins' type of trade and literally said the unusual was not for sale. Checked back couple weeks later out of curiosity, trade was still open. How long does it take to process trade reports usually? Could take a while, on avg. I think it's safe to say we get over 2000 reports a day. Considering not everyone does reports because some users (like me) do other things for the site, it may take a while for something to happen, but it will be taken care of.
What's your favorite food? Admins need to eat too... don't they? I'm really the least picky person ever, honestly. I like to eat healthy foods though- big vegetable fan here.
Thank you so much Sneeza and co. for the recent changes... being able to search for items is a huge way to save time when making trades, especially with huge, cluttered backpacks. Keep up the good work! That's a good one and something that's already stored in the database when a suggestion is made (secret new feature coming :D) -- haven't got the chance to complete the feature yet though.
Brad, I know you've probably gotten asked about this a lot, but do you have any plans to implement a feature that would tell whether or not a user suggesting a price change has that item in their backpack? That said, I'm not sure if that information is of any use. The person owning the item probably knows a lot more than a person who doesn't own it. All these "you own one downvote" posts are quite terrible, IMO.
What do you guys think of tf2r.com and of the way they handle bans? Bit too harsh imo.
I love bans on tf2r.com -- I got banned once and watching that you're banned video was the best thing ever.
I should grab one of the TF2R admins and see if they'll join in on the fun. I have no problem with how they handle bans, personally. What's the issue there?
In what way? We give out a plethora of warnings and some people complain that we don't ban enough for straight breaking our rules. I don't think you should just permanently ban users for the first time they break a rule. This is just my opinion.
You can always appeal. Yes I know, I was banned before.
The site's moderation tools are extremely subpar compared to the other community sites, but I think we do a fairly good job considering the restrictions, even if it's more work. I would say with all the restrictions, you guys do a fine job.
Do you have day jobs? We usually do LOL.
My day job is being a trade community admin, only I don't get paid for it. So I guess my answer is no, I'm a housewife.
I do and am self-employed. Busy and that is one reason my time is limited.
School, and a couple of odd-jobs here and there :P.
I'm an Airman in the USAF.
I work for one for one of the biggest telecoms in Canada -- I mostly build internal tools to drive employee efficiency.
I work at Valve*.
I'm a freelance journalist!
I'm an ice hockey ref part time and a student.
I don't.
How did you first set a price for a item? Like at the beginning of the site. Assuming this is for backpack.tf -- At the beginning we used tf2wh prices. Then tf2wh stopped updating their prices for like 2 weeks, so I started the system for price voting. Had they been updating all the time, the backpack.tf you know today might have never happened.
What is your general take on the trading community? Especially the users of outpost, most redditors seem not to like most those people. They have gotten way meaner compared to when I started trading (about 1.5 years ago) People only look for profit and feel obligated to be mean to anyone who they won't profit off of.
Interesting enough, I haven't encountered any sexism or differential treatment- negative or positive- in the trading community of any game or as a whole.
This is in stark contrast to competitive TF2 where sexism is rampant and often openly supported. How sad is it that scammers are less openly sexist than competitive players?
Traders are bastards. I love 'em anyway.
Hey tf2 outpost people why was jailbait banned? Private backpack.
He has consistently made his profile private for prolonged periods of time. Not just once, and he knows that it's against the rules.
I have a question: How are you late because something was 'cancelled'? ;) I normally have class at this time on Wednesdays. It was cancelled, so I can do this. Wasn't planning on being here, but I am now.
What affect, positive or negative, do you think your websites have had on the trading economy? I think SteamRep has had a very positive effect on the trading economy as we tirelessly work to educate and prevent scams. The fact that we get a lot of attempted scams now is a testament that we're at least preventing some scams.
this is why not many users use tf2bazzar... You can't get offers on unusuals unless they are lowballing, and sometimes the suggusted price is wrong =C. The biggest complainers are the one who think their hat is worth 5000$ and get shot down. Which, in reality, is probably the bigger portion of the trading community. (i.e. everyone is in for profits)
Hey Brad, when will I be able to donate through Paypal? I just want to show my support ;_; Soon, soon. Almost completed the paypal tests.
Are there any plans in the future to allow for backpack.tf or other spreadsheet prices to be placed as an overlay on the item when hovered over, like on bazaar.tf? Bazaar.tf already does that, and you can use addons for tf2outpost like the one here Link to userscripts.org
I'll answer this for TF2OP: No. I don't want to denote what an item is worth - that's not how our economy works. It's up to the users to come up with the prices of items; why isn't a key only 1 ref? I don't know, but over time that's what the price has become. Sure, a feature like this could be used as "suggested" prices, and I did actually add this as a feature before, but many users said that people were taking it as a fixed price so I removed it.
Its a no for D2T, Dota 2 economy is changing everyday, so we just let the market fluctuate the way it should, suggesting prices can become a problem and its a really big responsibility
That is unfortunately a problem with how we actually -cannot- set timed bans. It is not a function on the site's moderation. We have to manually go through and unban people ourselves, which is why the appeal system exists; it reminds us of what they did and they'll be unbanned in this or that way. This is going to change in R2(but I really hate saying that because fuck knows when R2 will come.), Real actual PERMANENTLY bans generally only happen on multiple offenses or in the case of major issues (such as, say, a highly held community admin not delivering on a public unusual raffle).
Yeah it sounds like a huge pain in the ass having to manually undo people's bans. I think a timed ban system would definitely be great. Is the community admin green and sound like kermit? The site's moderation tools are extremely subpar compared to the other community sites, but I think we do a fairly good job considering the restrictions, even if it's more work.
So everyone who appeals? Pretty much haha.
Is the minimal amount of money that these sites generate enough for some spending cash for you all? For D2T admins and mods take around 4 hours a day minimum, some of us spending a little more time Running a site like backpack.tf is pretty much a second full time job. As for the amount of money the site generates being enough -- Nope, not for the time spent working on it. I'd say I make about 10% of what my real job gives me for the same amount of work. But it's not about the money, it's a lot of fun and creating something helpful to the community is very rewarding!
How long do you think the TF2 economy will keep running at a high level? As far as high tier Unusuals/Glitched items? I think it will take a long time for the TF2 economy to die off, if it every will. Many people are trading and not even playing the game anymore. It's like a virtual stock market. I think it will because they are always coming out with new effects and new hats. As long as the content stays fresh, the community will keep trading (still hoping for that cat hat..._)
Backpack.tf admins: Not sure if any of you can help me with this, but regarding the API, How, in C#.NET using json, can you sterilize it? It errors on me when it gets to the item's indexes because they are put as properties and change... Sorry, I'm not familiar with C#. I would think that any JSON parser would be able to handle it.
What is the general policy on dealing with people who have obviously sharked most of their wealth? Sharks get banned across multiple community sites. Because so many of us talk to each other on a regular basis, it's pretty easy to get the word out about sharks.
Edit: For clarity, people who have never bought anything via cash trades, and practically all of their rep coming from trades going OUT of their backpack. I personally despise sharking. In my personal opinion, it is toeing the line of scamming- especially since deception is involved.
Would you give people in certain positions would get more lenient treatment? Or is it across the board punishment for everyone? Heck no- across the board punishment for everyone. No favor, no deferential treatment. If anything, admins should be held to HIGHER standards than normal traders.
Thank you for the answer, I ask because people I know feel that one admin in particular has been treated in an unjust manner, seeing as they created a video giving you a guide on how to "shark", and then proceeded to delete the video. I was wondering if it was a case of sweeping under the rug, or are they merely underestimating the difference between sharking and getting good deals? Yeah, I saw it. The video was made before he was a community admin and before he had much experience at all with the trading community. It absolutely was not swept under the rug and it was investigated by more than a few admins.
Link to the video: Link to vimeo.com. Also, a person's YouTube "persona" isn't grounds to ban people. I could make "Holly the Happy Hacker" videos right now and talk about hacking people's emails but that doesn't mean I'd ever actually do it. Note: I would never hack anyone's anything- don't have the time or skill. =D.
I'll teach you Helen :M. Excellent, and I'll teach you how to be an admin. ;)
Note: I would never hack anyone's anything- don't have the time or skill. =D. Kinda funny how you don't mention morality in there :) Well, I assumed that would be a given. =D.
I don't see any difference in profit-hunger over the past 1.5-2 years. The big difference came in the 6 months, during which people changed from primarily trading for what they liked and values were very superficial, to primarily trading for profit. The difference was insane. It's really quite impressive the sheer scope of what happened over just a short time with such a silly economy.
Do you really think Unusual pricing on Backpack.tf is good? I personally think it really slows down the Unusual economy and some prices are plain weird because you need to re-price each effect individually, so this causes a lot of weird prices on hats suddenly losing or gaining demand. I wouldn't use it as a bible but it can give you a general idea on the value. Unusuals aren't like earbuds, there are only a few of each effect and it's quite subjective. Some people collect specific hats or specific effects which will make the hat fluctuate at some point.
I think it's pretty great compared to the already-existing alternatives.
Yes but I wish more people would participate so we could get more prices on more unusual hats!
Have any of you met in real life, or is the business here over the internet only? I have never met another admin face-to-face, but I have actually met 5-6 various friends over the years from teams I have been on from league play. So far all of those have been very pleasant experiences. Besides Mattie, I have met XE_ManUp, Bluedemon, Schwegs, Butane, and Drunken F00l IRL (even though only Schwegs is doing this AMA and DF is a Valve employee now). I've never met any other trade admins IRL. Do any of them even live in Australia?
Besides Helen and Mattie of course. I slept with Helen, but don't tell Mattie he might get mad.
What's it like knowing you are all a big part of the Tf2 Community? How did you start off... (With Tf2) Its awesome to know that i can help out with the TF2 community, And the responses I get from people who gets help when they help with what ever problem they may have is just.. Well awesome! It's definitely fun being a part of the Community. Started off playing, then trading, then I became an Outpost Admin (about a year later) which sparked everything else pretty much.
I started with Tf2 after completing Portal on my PS3, Basically I wanted to see what else the Orange box had to offer (Got it for my bday, never heard of HL2 before that) I came across for the first time there. but it was not as appealing because console version sucks (No offence) After that I got to try it on a free weekend, and boom! I got hooked.
internal tools to drive employee efficiency. Like neural implants, right? :) Great cutting edge tech! More like remote-controlled helicopters equipped with teaser guns.
TEASER GUNS? I WANT ONE. I know, you meant taser. But I'd love a teaser gun. =D OH THE LOLZ TO BE HAD. ;) Hahaha, someone make one for the spy -- would be like the holiday punch _^
I don't understand how having a private profile would deal with hackers? Well if you haven't noticed, Aces constantly changes his name and profile picture so that people don't know it's him. But his profile does have information about him, and his backpack is quite expensive. If people don't know it's you, they won't try to hack you. But like I said, the ban will be redone soon.
He does keep the same steamcommunity url though, /acesgamer. Just like what JJJ said, it also helps with Impersonators who won't be able to steal your info because they can't see it.
Mainly a question for backpack.tf and TF2outpost. I collect craft #66 and locating items can be a pain, is there any chance of getting the ability to do a general search for all items of a certain craft number? I understand outpost has the function to search for a specific item craft #66, but I would love to be able to locate all in one search. Backpack.tf has tons of backpacks able to be searched, would it be possible to search all of them for owners of craft # items? Edit: also are collection trades like my craft number trade allowed on outpost? There is a feature I'm working on that should make you happy in the near future. That'll be the extent of my answer right now :D.
For TF2OP admins - how do you respond to people spreading word that your site is filled with stupid traders? That would imply that every other place, including Reddit, TF2TP, and TF2 is filled with stupid traders. People trade all over the place and saying that the only place to have "stupid traders" is Outpost is rude and not true. Most of the time these "stupid traders" are people who are new to the game, don't understand how the website works or just don't know prices. I know when I started I asked for unusuals for my regular hats because I didn't know any better. Also I see that most of the people who complain about it are older traders who (like me) miss the times when you can just trade for the whatever the hell you want and not worry about losing profit or anything like that. I'm sure where ever you go to trade you will find someone who you believe is a "stupid trader" it's just how it was, is, and always will be.
I agree with them because the site is filled with stupid traders.
We make our own tools. Do you think normal users should have access to these? If not, why not? They would be bored to tears- it really only helps if you're investigating scam reports. XD.
What are the most annoying things you put up with on a daily basis? Dealing with scammers.
People who can't read my profile notes.
People who let their brother scam on their account.
Regen.
Improperly formatted scam reports, ESPECIALLY when the title/subject of the post isn't correct.
Scammers with multiple alt accounts. Just stop. You're going to get caught anyway. You're just wasting everyone's time, including your own.
Regen (JUST KIDDING, <3 U REGEN. I just put that because Sneeza did)
People who expect us to give them flair without even reading the canned "fill-in-the-blanks" message they send us.
Rule-breakers.
The fact that my gaming PC outputs enough ozone for my office to smell of it.
How much money do you guys get from donations? On outpost: We usually don't get any, but special occasions makes Sneeza soft and he might spare a few scraps for the staff.
Link to backpack.tf :D.
A few scraps = like 10 keys. Regen is clearly the master of asskissing. ;)
TF2Outpost is somewhat notorious for having ban-happy or biased admins. What do you people say about this? I'm an Outpost admin and I am neither ban-happy or biased. I would say what I always say- can you please show me some evidence?
I'm a little ban happy, but not biased :)
This is in stark contrast to competitive TF2 where sexism is rampant. I could literally write an academic paper on this. There is so much sexism in competitive TF2 that if a woman even tries to bring up a discussion about it, anywhere, it turns into a pile-on of personal attacks and abuse. Not every competitive TF2 player is sexist by any means and some- like Hein- will go out of their way to call people out and have no tolerance for sexism. In fact, all the UGC admins are incredibly supportive in stomping out sexism. The admins aren't the issue- it's the community and it's really surprising.
Wait, what? In contrast, I've now had the pleasure of meeting several professional Dota 2 players. These are guys who make their career out of playing Dota 2. They were extraordinarily polite and my gender wasn't even slightly an issue. Top class, hands down. I cannot say enough good things about the competitive Dota 2 community.
I find your second point really interesting, since MOBA players aren't exactly known for being polite. The professional Dota 2 players and their managers were just amazing and fantastic. I had a wonderful, wonderful experience with the community Dota 2 charity match and was so pleasantly surprised. All the ones I spoke with were class acts.
How much trouble does the Russian Mafia cause you through Money Laundering? Well, I'm not sure about the Russian Mafia specifically, but laundering stuff through alts is a huge headache for me personally because I handle so many scam reports. =(
Shhh.
Dude shh! Srsly! We dont want any trouble okay?
Too many potatoes.
They provide excellent fodder for me getting paid for writing.
Hi I have a question. How do you deal with the trollers and idiots who always scam people? Like people who try and buy bills for 4-5 keys and try and sell keys for 4-5 ref. That's not scamming :)
Those aren't scammers, those are just people trying to shark or just make profit. There is a huge difference between that and scammers. There isn't much we can do about them, not allowing people on our sites/servers because we don't like the way they trade isn't any more just than what they are doing.
So I got hijacked a while back and valve duped all my items that were traded away. How can I get in touch with my hijacker and down him in goat semen? Well, I would say check California and Russia. Of the known hijackers in TF2, most of them are from California or Russia.
I've been banned on sourceop without any proper reasoning or proof, "I am the One" had two weeks to look into it but neglected to respond to me. I decided to make another account, it was going fine and then he banned me for ban avoidance. Still no response and I don't have access to appeal my ban. What can I do about this? Hrm, have you tried sending him a PM on the SteamRep forums? Start a Conversation with him and link him to the thread. We are so severely understaffed that stuff does fall through. I'm so sorry about the wait and hopefully it'll get resolved soon.
Why are there so many Quickbuyers on your sites? All of them, "BUYING QUICKSELLS DONT OFFER B/Os" and all that. Where do you see Outpost mentioned in this question? I dont see bazaar anywhere but on this comment.
How much does a middleman charge? Most of the ones I know don't charge for the service (myself included)
However, it is important to recognize that these individuals are taking time out of their day to middleman a transaction for you and make sure that neither party is scammed.
In a sense the nice thing to do is to tip them for their trouble.
Ultimately, there is no set standard for this though.
Are you planning for any new websites based on other games? Well, for TF2OP we plan on supporting all games that support Steam Trading, so we'll always be expanding! I know that backpack.tf are also doing this too, and I guess Brad will probably chime in one this question.
It would be nice to have a system that works for multiple games. backpack.tf did start a "dota2" clone, but it's quite a different market and I don't know enough about the game. It's not as active as I imagined it would be. Until there's a real indicator that it's something worth investing time into, I don't see it happening.
We will be supporting Dota 2 in the site revision (whenever that is).
Is mayonnaise an instrument? Five.
It could be... I guess it depends on its damage spread. ;)
Out of your entire time of being an admin for the community of trading, what has been your most favorite/memorable moment about it? I think it's wayyy too hard to chose one moment, but there have been a lot. First death threat, impersonator, messing with scammers etc.
Getting a bunch of ERP logs from a guy.
Someone gave me a free game once. That was really nice of them.
Too many to list them, the most recent memorable moment is getting 6 impersonators accounts banned and losing about 3000 dollars on scammed items.
I don't really have any favourite moments. It isn't really a pleasant thing.
Going to Valve and meeting everyone.
What happened to T-Virus? What do you mean by that?
Why was he banned? If you mean on TF2OP, I believe the ban reason is public.
Why don't you organically compose your own set of rules? It's not exactly hard... if you lift rulesets wholesale from other sites, people might think you're lazy. I did started with a couple of rules from steamrep and other trading websites, obviously after some time we create a new set of rules to suit our community, but sometimes is better if u ask for some help.
Maybe he was on his way to class only to find out it was cancelled? Pretty much.

2012.09.17 05:18 ArchangelleDworkin [META] Project PANDA: The FuckRedditbomb

MAJOR SOCIAL NETWORK CONTINUES TO HARBOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AND VOYEURISTIC CONTENT
Reddit.com is a social website that allows its user to share and discuss content such as videos, photos, articles, websites, and so on.
Reddit is massively popular (http://blog.reddit.com/2012/01/2-billion-beyond.html), especially with young people (http://en.reddit.com/misc/comments/nevz9/results_of_the_reddit_demographics_survey_in_pie/).
Reddit is split into subcommunities known as "subreddits," meaning that while reddit exists as a website, it consists of the sum of its subcommunities. People can subscribe to each community and participate by sharing and commenting.
Unfortunately, the reddit community as a whole also harbors and caters to pedophiles, distributors of child pornography, rapists, peeping Toms, and sex offenders.
Last fall, Anderson Cooper aired a report exposing the child pornography hosted on the site, ultimately leading to the largest subreddit devoted to it being shut down. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuMdQRRLoYg&feature=related http://www.reddit.com/jailbait
Dozens of subreddits took its place.
Reddit users, as well as people in the media, have criticized Reddit's permissive attitude towards child exploitation. Unfortunately, while admins didn't ban sexualized images of children on paper until last February (http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2012/02/policy-shift-reddit-bans-child-pornography.html), the rule remains unenforced, indicating that they are more interested in shielding themselves from bad press than protecting innocent kids.
A list of "jailbait" (child porn) forums that are currently on reddit:
Some of these forums are hidden and invite only which makes it impossible to know how many actually exist.
The owners of reddit know there is active trading of child porn on their forums and refuse to do anything about it. Any reports are deleted and ignored. Further, Reddit's cofounder simply dismisses the issue and blames the exploited children whose pictures are being traded: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXZYvrue1BE
Included in the Anderson Cooper report was the statement by Reddit General Manager Erik Martin which defends the child pornography remaining on the site: "We’re a free speech site and the cost of that is there’s offensive stuff on there … Once we start taking down some things we find offensive, then we’re no longer a free speech site and no longer a platform for everyone. We’re exerting editorial control and that’s not what we are." http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2012/02/policy-shift-reddit-bans-child-pornography.html
The former leader of the child pornography rings, Violentacrez, is often in direct contact with the owners of the site. Erik Martin (aka hueypriest) went so far as to warn Violentacrez before reluctantly making the announcement last February. http://pastebin.com/eWhyDXCH
(4:03:13 PM) hueypriest: want to give you a heads up
(4:04:00 PM) hueypriest: we're making a policy change regarding jailbait type content. Don't really have a choice.
Reddit also has subreddits which publish images of women's and underage girls' private areas, including "upskirt" and "downblouse" pictures, without the knowledge or consent of their subjects. The users of these subreddits trade tips on how to stalk and photograph women and minors and encourage each other to go out and take more such pictures.
A list of these forums currently on Reddit include:
A majority of these images are of girls in high school classroom settings.
Creepshots' FAQ states: "Creepshots are CANDID. If a person is posing for and/or aware that a picture is being taken, then it ceases to be candid and thus is no longer a creepshot. A creepshot captures the natural, raw sexiness of the subject without their vain attempts at putting on a show for the camera. That is the essence of the creepshot, that is what makes a true creepshot worth the effort and that is why this sub-reddit exists."
One user, called SFJohnny, secretly video tapes himself raping and beating hundreds of women and girls, and shares them on reddit. http://i.imgur.com/1Hkpt.png
Not only is this all of this disgusting, it's illegal as per the Video Voyeurism Act of 2004.
Whoever, in the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States, has the intent to capture an image of a private area of an individual without their consent, and knowingly does so under circumstances in which the individual has a reasonable expectation of privacy, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both.
Other forums are explicitly devoted to filming sexual assaults and sharing them on reddit as pornography for other users. These include:
Sick to your stomach yet? Here's more awful Reddit things:
Past media coverage:
Also can be found on our Tumblr
WHAT DO WE DO WITH THIS?!
Reddit is the most popular with college aged asshats in the US. Lots o' colleges have a black list for websites that contain child pornography or illegal material. Find as many emails for schools as you can and mass email this sucker out.
Act Local. If you're in America, I bet there's 20 churches near your home. Each church could have around 100 CONCERNED PARENTS that go to PTA meetings and talk to other parents. Send the "Redditbomb" to local politicians and churches. Let them see that their children are using a website that exploits and sexualizes children.
You can send tips to the FBI all day (god knows I do), but I think a grassroots campaign could do wonders.
Do you know how BORING local news is? Can you imagine if your local news could run a "IS YOUR CHILD POSTING IN A PEDOPHILE WEBSITE? STATISTICALLY THERE'S AN 80% CHANCE!" story? Holy shitballs they'd be all over it.

Let them see that their children are using a website that exploits and sexualizes children.

2012.02.26 02:32 SA-SRS_Troll_Alert Meet the Central Scrutinisers - part 1

This post is going to contain links to NSFW material, so if you're at all sensitive to pictures of BDSM or Teenage pornography, I suggest not clicking on the marked links.
So it seems that Reddit has been under scrutiny from a group of people in the Something Awful forums for at least the past 4 years. These people have decided to unilaterally cast judgement upon Reddit as a whole, and a number of Redditors individually. From their moral highground in their $10 panopticon they've been quietly abusing the living shit out of Reddit. their rules for judging us simply stated are:
1) All quotes must be from Reddit and they must be sourced. If you post something, a link must also be posted to the direct Reddit thread it is from.
2) Anything quoted from Reddit must be in quote tags. This is to prevent people from mistaking a Reddit quote for something someone is genuinely saying.
3) This thread is for discussion of Reddit. It is not for discussion of how Reddit isn't that bad, how SA/Youtube/4chan/et al. are just as bad as Reddit. Attempting to start this argument will be seen as a derail and reported as such. -If someone does say something to this affect, please just report their post as trying to derail and then ignore them and move on. Engaging their argument is just going to make things worse.
Anyone disagreeing with their opinions is summarily banned from the circlejerk.
I have a fundamental problem with people who like to frame themselves as being morally superior. I also have a problem with people whose stated aim is to do harm to Reddit. So I thought I'd reverse the panopticon for a moment, and spend some time watching the watchers. Introducing Reddit user Willow_Rosenberg aka ICumWhenIKillMen.
Willow_Rosenburg posts on the SA forum under the name Aleksei Vasiliev She has been banned from at least one subreddit for posting personal pictures of the moderator and seems to be fairly relentless in her quest to judge a number of redditors and their sub reddits. Now if I spent so much time arguing for the removal of subreddits like /jaibait and /beating women, I'd make darn sure to hide the fact that I also write a personal blog that featured (suprise) (NSFW) homoerotic pictures of young men, and men and women getting beaten. Now none of this small selection from her archives seem to be illegal (although some of it cuts close to the bone), but then again nothing on /jailbait or /beatingwomen was illegal (as far as I'm aware).
I'm not going to link to the trail of information I have put together, nor to her personal blog. I have a full archive of all material, and have checked that the reverse image search at tineye hasn't indexed this blog yet. I have very little respect for this person, but I do have respect for Reddits rules and am quite happy to submit what I have to a neutral third party for validation, perhaps ViolentAcrez would be willing to fill this role? I'm fairly sure he would enjoy the chance to view the archive on Willows blog and bask in the schadenfreude.
Willow, you better clean up quick, this isn't too difficult to reverse engineer.
I've got a fair amount of info regarding most of the Something Awful contibutors, and it's pretty much what you'd expect to find being hidden by any group of crusading moral zealots.
So:
Here's what I suggest. If you think Reddit is such a bastion of internet awfulness, then fuck off. At the very least keep your "Poop" (I feel so dirty) in your own backyard (and for the love of all that is holy, cut out the brony crap)
I have made several requests to get the FAQ in /rapistsrights to remove the direct link to /mensrights. I'm quite happy for you to keep your parody site, but linking it back to a sub that actually helps people is a fucking shitty thing to do. Please remove the link.
Lastly, if you're going to put together a dossier on reddit, and send it to major media outlets and the FBI, make damn sure you know what your doing, there are people here that make my sleuthing look like an amateur. Get your own house in order first, because your personal "Poop" is all over the net, and I'm ready to start part 2.
Edit: Can anyone tell me what a "Sharting" is? Apparently it's going to happen to me, and it doesn't sound very pleasant. Would it be better to ask in /SpaceDicks? (don't click this!)
Thought I'd better point out I have no connnection with violentacrez at all. I have never conversed with him (until 3 hours ago). I simply referenced him here as he seemed to be a personal favorite for attack in the forums, and I thought he may enjoy this.

2011.10.11 15:02 cacophonousdrunkard In the aftermath of /r/jailbait being shut down for getting the site bad press, does anyone else feel like this entire dynamic is based on a fundamental confusion about the nature of the internet?

Clearly the reason it was shut down was to avoid the stigma that people associated with this site hold some kind of negative, discrediting, or morally corrupt element and Reddit wants to preserve it's integrity in the mainstream. It seems to me that at the root of this idea is some critical misunderstanding about what the internet is and what it really DOES for people and for the world.
I think it's still hard for people to truly keep in mind that we (the internet) are the entire post-information-era population of earth and that we (the internet) are exactly as diverse as the post-information-era population of earth.
The obvious difference between traditional media and the internet is that here we all have a semi-permanent public voice, and it's MUCH easier for us to find eachother. Instead of waiting for a subject to come up in conversation in our bars and dinner parties to find likeminded people, we now have an indexed, easily searchable database for all of the moments and feelings we face as human beings--you can find blistering rage for no good reason, tender and heartwrenching matters of love and family, you can find someone's darkest darkness or most socially unacceptable sexual taboo, and sometimes you just find fucking puppies.
If nothing else, the existence of /jailbait should simply be a mirror held up to those something-thousand members of the post-information-era population of earth that like to look at pictures of teen girls. There they are, doing that. Take it for what you will, but understand that that's truth staring you back in the face. On some level that's a reflection of a streak that a lot of current-day humans are capable of having and here is where they go to have it.
We can choose to make any moral judgment or not from there, but I think that it is very important in this new medium not to begin to define degrees of free speech or limit the ways we're allowed to see what we are as a whole. There are assholes and perverts and rapists and killers and hippies and grandmothers and cocaine abusers and buddhists and drunks and homeless people in the world, so there are assholes and perverts and rapists and killers and hippies and grandmothers and cocaine abusers and buddhists and drunks and homeless people on the internet. The only difference is that now we SEE THEM.
The point is that we (the internet) need to realize that WE ARE HUMANITY, and humanity is us. They are not separate things. A site like reddit is not some niche community centered around baseball or motorcycle modification or teen sluts, it's just a certain percentage of humanity being themselves.
disclaimer- it's early, and i'm sorry if this is incoherent
EDIT- there seems to be a portion of redditors here that are reading this as either a slippery slope argument or an outright defense of jailbait or moral ambiguity.... im not sure where youre getting that but my intent was to avoid that debate altogether. i am more interested in the implications of an online community as large and diverse as our offline communities and the way we seem to regard them differently even though its the same people.
one other thing is that i was unaware of the actual cp changing hands and thus the legal implications to the owners of reddit
