Over 30% of first, second and third grade elementary students who have communicated with strangers online, including on social media, have sent photos or videos of themselves, according to a survey by the Tokyo metropolitan government.
The metropolitan government has called for the implementation of filtering tools that limit children’s access to social media platforms and other online content as a preventative measure.
The survey was conducted from Jan. 5 to 19 with 2,000 parents and guardians who allow their elementary, junior high school or high school children to have their own smartphone or tablet device.
Asked if their children had communicated with strangers on social media or other online platforms, 19% of respondents said “Yes.” The largest age bracket to respond in the affirmative was elementary school students in first, second and third grade (22.6%), followed by high school students (20.6%), junior high school students (18.4%) and elementary school students in fourth, fifth and sixth grade (14.2%).
Regarding the details of their online communications with strangers, 61.7% of all respondents answered with “exchanging messages,” and 37.5% answered with “playing online games against each other and chatting.”
The percentage of children who had exchanged photos or videos of their faces or bodies came to 20.3%. The percentage was highest among elementary school children in first, second and third grade at 33.6%.
“Young children do not understand the risks of social media and other online content, and they tend to fall into danger easily,” an official of the metropolitan government said. “In order to protect children from online dangers, a combination of measures needs to be taken, such as using filtering tools and making rules on the use of smartphones.”

This kid was in my class since around first grade and we would play video games like FNAF and talk together. We were pretty good friends but around Covid at the end of my middle school years we didn't see each other much. I know they're at my high school and they're a lesbian but I haven't been in a class with them and I don't think we've talked since like 7th grade. I'm 17 now and I have a huge crush on them but I have no idea how to start a conversation!!! Say "hey I was that awkward kid you went to elementary school with who screamed at the foxy jumpscare do you remember me"?? No, it's too scary... I think my social skills have been permanently messed up. It's probably because I'm autistic but the pandemic definitely did not help.

Hey guys, I really just needed to get this off my chest to people who understand what im going through. I have suffered hereditary migraines with aura ever since i was in 6th grade. Between my extremely low pain tolerance due to other medical problems and how painful migraines are, I have been experiencing extreme anxiety/paranoia about seeing an aura/having a migraine. Its so debilitating. it’s what my first ever panic attack was about, and my most recent one (which was the first panic attack I had in front of my boyfriend.) Normal painkillers never work and i just end up throwing them back up, so im always terrified. I bought some excedrin but have yet to have a need to try it, so i don’t know if its effective. My whole family except my sister (who gets the same migraines) thinks im crazy for being so stressed about it. If anyone has any advice im desperate to do anything to help.

I've (F14) been friends with this guy(M15) since the sixth grade and I only became friends with him bc I liked him but I kept him around bc he was pretty good company and we have this big friend group. He's been sending me mixed signals for like forever but this time it's worrying. The other day I went to my friends bday party and I was hanging out with some people from my biology class and out of nowhere he shows up. I was hella confused bc he was not invited 😭 but it was good bc i barely knew anyone there. It was a group of 5 hanging out and about 2 hours had passed and the other 3 had already left. We decided to sit on a swinging bench kinda secluded from everyone else in a corner outside. It was just us two laughing and talking and I saw he had his hand open and there was a little like bruise ish thing on it. I pointed at it and after he explained it I left my hand resting on his. He then kept inching his hand more until both of our hands were interlocked. A few minutes pass by and we're paying no mind to the fact that our hands are casually interlocked and then some bitch ass dude comes walking by and goes "guys we're going to play a game inside come on!!"
We go inside and theres no game happening 😐. I sneak back outside and so does he. In my mind im thinking "man my little romantic moment is over 😞". We sit back down and the first thing he does is put his arm around my shoulder and make my head lay where the crook of his neck is. Back in my head Im freaking tf out bc we're never like this close. We were still talking and laughing when about 10 minutes later he gets a call from his mom saying she's here to pick him up. He responds with "gimme a few minutes". He just continues our conversation and pretends like his mom isnt waiting outside for him😭. Then IIIIIII get a call from my mom saying she's here to come pick me up , I respond with the same thing he said. We stay there still laughing and he goes " I really don't want to leave" and I just tell him we should probably get going because his mom is super strict. I wait a few minutes for him to get in his car and leave bc his mom doesnt like me AT ALL.
I get home and im still freaking out bc Ive never been in a relationship before and there were multiple times where our faces were really close and I thought he was going to kiss me. So I’m first year student, my mental health got zero after I came to uni for various reasons, one is that I’m new to New Zealand and I don’t live in halls so I literally have zero interaction with people .doesn’t mean I don’t say hi to people or get along with them in fact I really approach people but I don’t know how to make like long-term friendship in uni ? Also I don’t have time out of uni which makes everything worse as I study 9hours my grades are not bad but in these last weeks I’m overthinking so much that it’s effecting my grades I guess. I’m tired of not having friends and isolating myself and studying , I really miss the days that I had friends family etc the more time passes the more unmotivated I get to study. I joined some clubs but they didn’t have event till now lol guess I’m cursed I wanted to join anime and manga club but I didn’t find anything about too . I’m really tired I want to enjoy study as I did before , I’m tired of feeling anxious unmotivated etc… what should I do? I don’t know anymore how should I live haha, I THINK my brain cells after this semester will have mutation or something due to overthinking . Any tips? Hi everyone, I am in need of some advice. I am not diagnosed Crohn’s disease but that is what my doctors have been suspecting. I have had GI issues since I was a child. As an adult, I have always struggled with constipation but never thought much about it. I am a very healthy person, I eat mostly organic, gluten free, dairy free, refined sugar free. 2 years ago I was diagnosed with abnormal liver enzymes but no one could figure out the root cause. Soon after that I noticed I was having extreme bloating after eating, especially random foods like rice that have seem to have gotten worse since early this year. I went to a gut health specialist and she ran a GI map that came back positive for H. Pylori, high calprotectin and occult blood. She said we could treat it naturally with supplements but I could get an opinion from a GI if I wanted to. I then went to see 2 Gastroenterologist who suspected Crohn's disease on top of the H Pylori. They want to do a Colonoscopy as well as an Endoscopy. I know how evasive those procedures are and are also very expensive. I am only 26 and my insurance won’t pay for it. Unfortunately Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis both run in my family. I am trying to decide if it is worth it to do the procedures to get a diagnosis now, Or if I should try treating naturally with the supplements and see if things improve first. He usually books 6 weeks out but had a cancellation this week and wants to get me in. I am afraid things could go wrong but I also don't want to miss something serious. What would you do?

My boyfriend and I have been in a LDR for 2.5 years. He is studying in engineering in the UK and I am studying Medicine in our home country (Southeast Asia).
Yesterday he told me there is a high chance of him failing several papers and would need to repeat them in the summer. This has happened before during his first year but he made it through. The difference now is that because the average percentage of his grades will most likely be less than 55%, he will not meet the requirement to advance to his final year (Masters in Engineering).
So his plan now is to come back home and ‘maybe’ continue his masters or do a masters in something other than engineering. And because it’s considered as failure to complete the program, his scholarship will be taken back and he will have to pay every single penny back.
When I first met him, he seemed very clear of his goals and career pathway. Over time I realized that he struggles a lot in his studies and social life. He also hid from me for months that he was diagnosed with depression. As a medical student, I understand and don’t judge, but as his GF it hurts me to see him like that and I worry constantly that he won’t be able to cope with the stress in the future.
I love him, but I feel like his future holds a lot on uncertainty and I am afraid it will burden me.
TLDR: My LDR bf is failing Uni and will be in financial debt. I can’t see a future with him anymore.
I feel like I want to break up.

Since I can remember my childhood has always been messy, my father, although present was distant and his partner was very abusive towards me. This caused a rift in our relationship and for me to only stay with my mother - to add my mother is mentally unwell and on multiple occasions tried to, threatened and did kick me out, this led me to move into my aunties this year and I’m starting to regret it.
At first everything was great, I am not a very social person and I struggle to hold conversations but that didn’t affect me too much as I could still talk to my aunties about their day - but it never went further than that. My aunties love to talk and are all practically sewn to the hip. They also talk shit about each other constantly and although confusing has been like that for awhile.
Recently they’ve been getting angry at me for things that have never happened and I’ve finally snapped. They had given me a car for my learners which I was extremely grateful for and have been using to get my hours up - I stopped driving for awhile as I had gotten into grade 12 and I’ve been prioritising that. My aunties started to get angry at me and it eventuated into heated arguments where they told me I don’t want to listen to anyone and they can’t say anything to me cause I only reply with “okay” when they ask me to do something. They asked me to get a job, to get my hours up, to keep my room neat and I’ve said ok to all those things. I’ve applied for jobs, I asked to go driving and I’ve been tidying my room more. Apparently I still don’t listen, I am not successful compared to them (they are all 30) and that whatever a successful 17 year old looks like is not me in their words. In summary they said I don’t apply myself to the invisible responsibilities that I should have at 17. I’m not really sure what those responsibilities are because I feel like I’ve done everything I can do at my age and I’ve already had multiple jobs since 13.
I snapped and called them all shit talkers since that’s all they ever do to one another. My grandma used my relationship with my father against me and blamed it on me and they all told me I can move out and live with my mother again. I don’t find being told to move out as a threat and I will simply agree and say ok as I’ve been threatened many times as a scare tactic by my mum and will happily move out if asked to.

My first week’s account seemed to land well so I will continue to share my journey as it is therapeutic for me and hopefully iof benefit to others. I am constantly surprised by the similarities in so many people’s journeys. On reflection that shouldn’t be such a surprise as we have a lot in common. Of note, I really enjoy reading about other people’s wins and equally their struggles.
In the week I also decided to share my writing with several close friends. These are people who I know in real life as well as from various personal development groups and programmes I am in and again I receive positive feedback from them which is always encouraging. I wonder about posting to my main FB feed or other small groups but for now that feels premature and although I have no shame about my actions part of me doesn’t want to invite the possibility of any negative comments even though the risk of that is low. In fact, not only do I NOT feel any shame, I am incredibly proud of where I have got to and central to that is me taking control of the situation and acting in my own best interests, not those of anybody else.
I am surprised on Monday around 5pm when what I take to be low grade food noise pipes up. I feel full enough and there is no real temptation to eat but I note its presence. Fifteen minutes later I rememberealise I haven’t actually eaten anything since 11:45 so it shouldn’t be a surprise that I’m feeling a little empty!! Questioning why I was hungry never crossed my mind. Go figure?! Solution, heat up my dinner and eat a little earlier than I planned. Job done and I feel full and satisfied.
My first significant side effect arrives later that evening. Marked tiredness hit me which also returned on Wednesday early evening accompanied by some mild dysphoria; not really food noise as such I was just a bit flat in mood. I was not particularly hungry but I did eat a few nuts whilst dinner was cooking; it settled.
Next morning (Thurs) normal service is resumed. I slept well, and awake bright and cheery. I realise that despite my positivity in the first 10 days, life still lifes and fluctuations in my mood are entirely normal and to be expected. Looking to the outside world to influence my mood is never going to work. Peace of mind comes from the inside out and that reminder of the Truth of how the system works is useful to me. I sit and meditate for 30 minutes before getting up and that again helps to ground me.
Interestingly this week the appetite suppression has continued for the full seven days as has the feeling full most of the time.
My 5mg pen has arrived safely and is sitting next to its friend in the fridge. I aim to go for five weeks on the 2.5mg based on my current progress but I am open to going with the flow and listening to my body. I am happy with my second week’s weight loss, another 1.5 kg. Down 5kg in 2 weeks and the 90s are in sight.

As the school year winds down, I just wanted to take a moment to reflect on some of the teachers that inspired me throughout my years as an Edmonton student.
Annuciation Kindergarten: Mrs. Huot. Those Easybake oven cakes were the best.
Grade 5: Mrs. Gruniger: She gave us "brainfood" aka candy when she felt like we needed a boost. Encouraged me to read for fun.
Westlawn Jr. High: Mr. McDonald, Mr. Jeffries, Ms.Quelch: first two were LA teachers who encouraged me to get more into creative writing. Last one was a PE teacher who just always stood out as someone who loved her job and the kids she taught.

Just a quick warning I’m putting it all out here about our friendship, i just want to tell the truth.
I 19f had a messy relationship with my ex best friend who I’ll call Tina because she was tiny.
We met in our 7th grade math class after she was having a panic attack because of multiple things going on in her life. I comforted her and helped her escape a toxic friendship and introduced her to my group of friends. We called every night and gave each other ther the support we both needed as I was sheltered and new to everything and she was coming out of some serious mental tolls.
I was there for her even though she wasn’t always for me. I helped her through when her dad nearly died and his entire personality changed, when her mom became a single mother and Tina felt the need to step up as the other parent, and fully supported her in everything she did.
Everything was great until we hit high school. She demanded we talked everyday at school and at least an hour on the phone. I don’t mean to say she told me outright but she definitely forced my hand to keep the friendship. She would guilt trip me with fake panic attacks and swear I was being terrible to her. She also pretty much had to approve every friend I had not to mention boyfriends. The first two, granted, were asses to say the least. However, she’d look for reasons for me not to explore friendships outside of our little group.
I talked to several friends about how much this time affected my grades, love life, and other friendships and they all said the same thing, I went from cheerful and playful, to scared and there being no light in my eyes when Tina was around.
A couple years into high school I met my now boyfriend and we hit it off big time. She did everything to chase him away and even convinced me to break things off. Luckily he and I never grew apart and decided that we’d try again, but help make each other better and to keep a more open line of communication.
She tried to use the same tactic on my other friend from theater but didn’t succeed.
To add insult to injury, I wrote a children’s book and it went to a national competition and all she cared about is that she became a published author in a poetry book before I even started binding my book. I told her about my success in the hallway of a hotel while my club members celebrated all our national placements and all she had to say, “that’s cool but I won that poetry contest and I’m published now! I’m getting copies of the book on Saturday, aren’t you proud of me!”
When I confronted her about this, she said she was also proud of me but she felt I was being selfish. I won a trip to Florida and get to present the book I worked so hard on. But apparently, that’s not as important.
Now for the big conflict, in the summer of 2023, I left my parents house the night before my college orientation. I’ll do a separate story on that. The point is, I left.
She herself yes was there for me holding me as I cried about leaving my sister and helping me but what I need to couch surf for a while.
She had a plan, move me from the campus I was registered for to the one she was going to and have me split door-dash money with her and hopefully not have to live out of her car. She also wanted me to pull a hearty loan from the bank her mom worked for to pay for all this. I personally cannot do that as I’m in the middle of getting a name change and it was hard for me to even get a driving permit.
A couple months pass and the house I had stayed at for that time kicked me out. From the stress of college and getting a job I’ll admit, I wasn’t the nicest.
The day before I was told I needed to find another place to stay I got a call from Tina. She called me crying because she was worried I was going to commit suicide and I talked to her about my feelings and future. How I have so much left to do and see. Including marrying the man I love, my boyfriend. She cried about that and said I should have listened to her. I pretty much ignored it as we talked about it serval times.
I was served my eviction notice, apologized to my friends parents, and began packing my things. I get a FaceTime from her and I’m thinking that my best friend might have some words of comfort or something.
I answer the call and with my friend in the back, she starts in on me saying that no matter what, I never listen. I only don’t when it happens that I can’t or it goes against my wishes and boundaries I’ve set. She went on yelling after what seemed like hours as I zoned out and packed with shaky hands and blurry eyes. Writing from throwaway account. I'm 22M and my parents have been married for 25 years without any issues, I'm an only child. Yesterday my mother went on a trip to the beach, for the weekend, with my aunt and my grandmother. Today at around 5pm my father told me he was going to go out because he had to do some stuff, this is normal for him on Saturdays so it seemed normal for me at the moment, I didn't ask any more questions. Usually he uses Saturdays to buy stuff, fix car related things, usual things in general.
Shortly after he left I took a nap, and woke up at 9pm with my mother calling. She said she was worried because he had called my father a couple times and he wasn’t answering. I looked around the house and he wasn’t there, which was unusual considering the time. Then I called him and the first two times he didn’t answer, this happens sometimes because when he's busy he leaves his phone away. But it got pretty weird because when he finally answered, I don't know how to describe it but his voice sounded different from what it usually sounds like. He said he was washing the car and that he would be back in half an hour. I then called my mother and told her what he said, and she sounded suspicious from what he said because it was a little late to wash the car. Then she called him, and after that, she told me she also noticed his voice weird (I didn’t tell her anything), and that she thought he could be in danger, or drunk or something, this had never happened before.
Around 15 minutes had gone by since from when I had first called him, so I called him again, I told him to send me his location, and he say no, that I was being more annoying than my mom, and that he would be back home in 5 minutes. He was right and arrived after 5 minutes, and wasn't drunk or anything. Then, I asked him where he was, and he said washing the car in x part of my city. I looked up all the 3 car washes in that area, and according to google maps they were all closed at 9pm, which might be wrong because sometimes google maps is wrong in my city/country. I then went to see the car and it had dust in the outside. I confronted him about it and he said the car wash was 24 hours, and that the dust was from the way home. I'm not stupid and I'm almost sure that's false. But he showed me the inside of the car and it was spotless, which was more confusing because that would suggest he did wash it. He also told me he was busy fixing other stuff from the car.
I know the most obvious answer is that he might be cheating. But I don’t think he would do that, my parents haven’t had any problem of that kind in their 25 years together, plus my grandfather (my father's father) cheated on my grandma many years ago, and that left big trauma on both my grandma and my father.
I don't know what to thing/believe/do, and can’t talk about it with anyone. My mom arrives tomorrow in the evening. Thank for your time reading this post.
