2024.05.17 10:44 AngelmZeal1 A certain forest exists where there are no animals. Unfortunately for us, my friends and I discovered the reason why.

La forêt silencieuse. It simply translates to the silent forest. An eerie description for what has become the grave of many beautiful souls and probably many more in the future.
We were a group of three friends, huge science enthusiasts or big-time nerds if you prefer, visiting a foreign country on our annual leave. During a night at a bar, Esperanza, who could understand the local language overheard a conversation about the nearby forest and the fact that it was devoid of fauna. There was a little touch of superstition to it, but our scientific and rational spirits could not subscribe to that. Therefore, to spice up our stay, we decided to investigate the next day.
Not a single soul wanted to take us to the forest without really explaining why according to Esperanza, so we decided to go on foot since it was a little bit visible from our accommodation. Near the entrance, one man ran after us shouting things I could not understand. That was the scariest thing our group of girls could witness so far, so Esperanza told us to run and so we did, entering the forest, giggling like little girls going on an adventure.
From a very young age, I always loved nature. Even after what has happened, I still do to a certain extent. It saddened my heart to see multiple plants and flowers, crushed on the ground, leading our way and fueling our curiosity, as strange marks and patterns also decorated the semi-dry soil. The trees were very tall and shielded us from the late afternoon sun. We took a few pictures and soon realized that the rumor was true. We could not spot one small bird or even a butterfly, and the only sounds we could hear were the ones we made, and those from the wind and rustling leaves. That was at least until we heard it for the first time.
It seemed to come from underground, like the sound of a voluminous tree being uprooted, accompanied by more rustling leaves noises. We looked up and could not spot anything. That was the time we decided to head back to the accommodation, after all, evening was fast approaching.
"Girls please hurry." Ines kept on saying during our walk back to the entrance, constantly looking behind her.
"Don't worry kiddo, we did not go too deep inside anyway. We'll soon be out." Esperanza spoke, reassuring her little sister. "The scariest thing that could happen now is another Raquel's lecture." She added, prompting her sister to chuckle.
"At least, she can't bore the locals with those." Ines added to the mockery.
"What that crazy dude was saying?" I asked Esperanza, ignoring their teasing.
"Oh, that guy, I didn't get it well but, something about disappearing and—"
The same noises interrupted us, but that time, they were coming from multiple directions around us. The rumor was then proving absolutely false. Something was definitely in that forest. We started jogging, looking around us and especially above us without seeing anything suspicious, and that for maybe over an hour, till evening and darkness found us. We had to stop at some point, after the noises stopped, because we were tired and out of breath.
We could no longer find our way out.
Finally thinking of contacting help, none of us knew what the right number could be, so instead, Esperanza found the number of our accommodation owner in her call history and phoned the gentleman. The communication did not really go well as there was some kind of interference, and suddenly, once again, the noises startled us. That time however, we could see that something high up in the trees, apparently sped towards us, as branches and leaves from afar were agitated by a moving force.
"Run, RUN!" Esperanza shouted, pushing Ines and I to lead the way.
All of us ran for our lives and for countless minutes since the strange noises would not stop. However, the moment we stopped because we were out of breath, Ines and I noticed that Esperanza had disappeared. At that point, Ines had reached her limit and just started screaming her sister's name desperately. I had to hug her to calm her down, and like a symbol of hope, we then saw the emergency flares in the sky. Esperanza did pass the message successfully and help had arrived somehow. They were showing us which way to go.
None of us wanted to abandon Esperanza but we needed to get help and assistance. After I made Ines understand that, I took her hand and we started running towards the flares, still escorted by the noises. They grew louder by the second but we did not stop, we could not stop if we wanted to survive. We ran until the ground suddenly caved in and we fell into a hole. It was not really deep, so I could quickly regain my senses, shaking my head to remove the sand, especially after hearing Ines scream at the surface. The screams were brief, quickly replaced by squelching sounds that grew louder as I climbed up. I did not even exit the hole when it came into view. Its branches morphed into two gigantic arms covered with leaves, it held half of Ines in one hand while its other one helped it chew and swallow the rest of my friend's body. A tree next to it then transformed, its branches regrouping to form two arms, while a bald head with two luminous white eyes and a large mouth, emerged from the top of the trunk.
The threat was not a predator hiding in the trees, it was the trees.
Ines remaining half was soon coveted by the other tree as a scuffle soon erupted. They started to move away from the hole, their roots sliding on the ground and making those underground sounds we have been hearing all that time. They mangled what was left of Ines while I seized the opportunity to attempt an escape. As soon as they noticed me, their branches moved up to cover their heads as if they reverted back to being normal looking trees, and they chased me, swerving between other trees. I ran, sobbing as I knew I could not escape them because of their incredible speed. Soon, other trees imitated the monsters as soon as I passed them, transforming behind me and joining the chase.
At some point, everything stopped again plunging the whole forest into a dead calm only disturbed by the emergency flares noises, my steps, my heavy breath and sobs. All the time, I tried looking around and behind me, unable to tell the difference between those monsters and normal trees, not even knowing if there were some normal trees in that forest or if all of them were monsters. Something then grabbed me from behind and lifted me up. It was one of them. It quickly directed me to its mouth while I screamed in fear and despair. At that moment, I really thought it was the end, but it suddenly stopped in its track. I remained in its massive hand, hyperventilating with my mouth and eyes wide open, having a good look at the piercing white eyes of the monstrosity.
"Em pure" I apparently heard it say, which I later discovered to be exactly 'impur' a word that means impure. It then tossed me away so violently that I only remember hitting something and falling unconscious.
Upon waking up the next morning, I discreetly looked around, surprised to be alive, then just stood up and dashed in a random direction. There was no noise, except for my panting and steps, the wind and the leaves. I ran without stopping for one second, my sight disturbed by the blood covering my forehead, determined to seize that last opportunity to stay alive. I then exited the forest and found myself in a field from where I could see a farmhouse. It was the end of the nightmare.
I became a curiosity for the locals as nobody ever made it alive out of the silent forest before. The authorities extracted all the information they could from me about what had transpired in those woods. Some believed me, others just could not, but we agreed on an official version about my friends and I being attacked by wild boars. I was then diagnosed with a condition that affected my blood, something I never knew I had, which they believe is what made me impure to the eyes of those things.
Traumatized to the core, I went back to my country, unable to really leave that nightmare behind as to this day, I am scared of trees. Despite that, I really try to cherish my life even though I feel guilty for having survived. Also, I have come to accept that science does not have the answers for everything, and that leaving certain mysteries alone is a wise choice.

2024.05.17 09:58 Witchywoman4201 What to expect while you’re expecting

My husband and I have been trying forever for a baby. And a few months ago I finally got the two lines that indicated our dreams were becoming a reality. I knew it would be high risk but I didn’t care about the risk, this was a dream I would regret not at least trying absolutely everything to fulfill.
The first few months my husband was extremely supportive. Waiting on me hand and foot, massages even though I wasn’t even showing yet. As the second trimester marched on his excitement only grew, slowly watching the baby grow at doctor’s appointments with me.
On the way out of a doctor’s appointment I tripped and landed terribly. Luckily we were right outside the doctor’s office so we could get help immediately. I faint at the sight of blood, so I don’t remember much after touching between my legs and finding crimson stains on my fingertips. When I woke up I was dazed but was so happy to feel my baby still doing gymnastics in my stomach.
My husband, however, must have become frightened that something would happen and slowly started to detach himself from my whole pregnancy. He only offered grunts in support as I picked out colors for the nursery. We had a late term pregnancy loss before so he was just scared of losing a baby again. It was easier to detach than accept something may happen. But you can’t live in the what if’s.
As I began to unpack the furniture for the nursery and set up the cameras for the baby monitor, I could see my husband's discomfort grow. His physical demeanor only got worse the more I progressed with the furniture.
Finally he stood up and shouted what he apparently had been holding in the last two months. “You aren’t pregnant anymore Liv! You lost the baby with the fall, there was nothing the doctor could do! A therapist told me to let you grieve how you saw fit but I can’t do this anymore! It is torture to watch you decorate our dead child’s nursery.”
I didn’t say a word, and just put his hand on my stomach because as I explained to him, I don’t care what the doctor says. I know my body and my baby. As he began to roll his eyes and was just about to lift his hand the baby kicked hard. My husband's face went from disbelief to horror.
All he could mutter as tears of true depression and fear began rolling down his cheeks was, “Liv, I saw them remove our poor sweet baby with my own eyes.”
As his last word slipped out, I could feel a searing pain. I was going into labor, and for the first time I was worried what that meant.
When I wake up I realize I am no longer home. In between bouts of unconsciousness, I take in the scene around me. The doctor screaming “WE HAVE TO SAVE IT!” and it all comes rushing back. I got told I was not pregnant by my husband and immediately went into labor. Which in my haze is a very hard sequence of events to process, hell even in my right mind that would be a difficult one.
I start stirring and the doctor notices and looks down at me, beaming with pride. My husband in a chair clearly drugged also is starting to rouse and try and piece together what happened. All he can keep repeating is, “what is it?” in a stupor. Like he truly couldn’t process what happened and what was currently happening.
As I become more aware, I try and find my voice. While raspy I am able to gasp out the words, “Where is my baby?!”
The doctor looks at me the pride evaporating and a cold expression taking over his face. “Your baby died months ago. Your husband watched us remove it. However, he did not see that I went on to take advantage of your willing and ready womb by implanting something much more important than you or your child would ever become.”
I blink taking in this information. I felt this thing grow in me, thought it was a part of me, loved it more than I loved myself. But that’s when I thought it was my child, my stomach begins turning and bile begins to raise into my throat.
“Would you like to hold what you brought to life, what you birthed?” The doctor said with a look of pure curiosity crossing his face.
“Yes..” I gasp before I can rationally consider his proposition.
Walking over with a bundle, he places it into my arms, and I look down with severe trepidation. Even though I have never seen it, I know it’s the thing I felt so connected to and somehow still do. Pulling the blanket away I see what could only be described as an abomination.
It was three different children stitched together to almost become one but not quite. Clearly in pain and not meant to exist. As a look of horror crosses my face the doctor sighs.
“I was hoping for a better reaction, that maternal instinct may win out. Too bad. Considering one of those babies IS yours. These three babies couldn’t make it on their own but together they could. I tried many times, but you are the first one to actually be able to last full term and have the baby survive. I hoped maternal instinct would have won over, it would have been easier.”
The bile rises again and I listen on in terror.
The doctor continues, “Since you’re the only one this has been successful with, there will be many more attempts we will require your hospitable womb for.”

2024.05.17 05:22 sliceofpear Boris Yeltsin destroyed the USSR just because he was impressed with the candy selection at a Houston supermarket

I stumbled across this long passage by Lev Sukhanov, Yeltsin's assistant at the time, from his book "3 years with Boris Yeltsin". The events described occurred in September 1989 and I've recited the passages below:
“When we were already returning to the airport, the devil pushed us to take a look at a typical American supermarket.
It was called Randall's Supermarket. From our group, only Boris Nikolaevich and I had never been to this kind of trading establishments.
Moreover, this was not a metropolitan, much less a New York store and, according to our standards, a very “ordinary” provincial one. If, of course, Houston can be considered a province.
Getting off the bus, I began to look for a crowd of people and something similar to our queues. However, there was no queue — neither around nor in the store itself.
It was a one-story building made of light metal structures. Naturally, none of the service personnel knew about our arrival and therefore there could be no talk of any “showing off”. An ordinary day, an “ordinary” assortment, “ordinary” visitors...
I was immediately struck by the abundance of light. And in general, the color scheme of everything was so bright and impressive that it felt like we were descending into the depths of a kaleidoscope.
The abundance of flowers was also mesmerizing - juicy, vibrant, as if just cut from a flower bed. Moreover, the flowers were not for sale, but as a decorative element.
As soon as we entered the supermarket, they called someone from the administration. From somewhere in the belly of the utility rooms appeared a very handsome young man in a snow-white shirt, neatly combed and, of course, smiling. It was the chief administrator. We introduced ourselves and said that we would like to find out about the work of the store.
When we walked along the rows, our eyes didn’t know where to stop. I could guess different things, but what I saw in this supermarket was no less amazing than America itself.
Some of us started counting the types of hams. We lost count.
I remembered our sausage shop on Krasnaya Presnya, where back in 1963 you could buy “Brunswick”, “Stolichnaya”, “Tambov”, “Uglich”, “Krakov” and a few other types of sausages. At that time, I thought this was the top of human dreams and that the first signs of communism hatched. To be fair, over the years, the store’s shelves began to empty and now only memories of its bright past remained. I remembered that Soviet store and compared it with this one in Houston, and realized that the abundance to which Khrushchev promised to lead us had passed us by.
At that moment (in Houston), all 300 Soviet research institutes and departments, whose job was to point to the advantages of socialism over capitalism could be trying to convinced me, but their efforts would be pointless.
The American reality, on the example of this supermarket, looked 100 times more convincing than any Soviet theories. Sure, not by bread alone a man lives... Not by sausage alone, not by cheese alone...
By the way, have you seen red, brown, lemon-orange cheese? How many types of cheese do you think we've seen in Houston? What about ham? All this unimaginable delicacy that everyone can try right in the store and decide — is it worth spending dollars on?
We couldn’t count the names of sweets and cakes, couldn’t grasp their variety of colors and their appetizing attractiveness with our eyes.
And although I am trying to convey my impressions, I understand that this is just a pathetic attempt, because the word is powerless before the reality of what that American store could offer.
Occasionally, I glanced at Yeltsin and noticed that it was a difficult test for him. And when a woman with a trolley caught up with him, on top of which a little boy was sitting, Boris Nikolaevich, apologizing, began to question her.
Does she often go to this store? It turned out, only on Saturdays.
Is your family big? 3 people: she, husband and child.
What is your family income? The woman explained that she was temporarily not working and lived on her husband’s salary, $3,600 a month.
Yeltsin asked how much she usually spends on food? It turned out that this family was spending about $170 on food for a week. From Saturday to Saturday. She still paid rent, insurance...
In the vegetable section, we were literally shocked by the quality of the produce.
A radish the size of a large potato was illuminated by bright light, and water was scattered onto it from small “spirits.”
Radishes were literally dazzling, and next to them were onions, garlic, eggplants, cauliflower, tomatoes, cucumbers.
You want smoked eel — here.
Would you like lamprey? Or is your liver accustomed to sturgeon and oysters? Pineapples, bananas…
And at the confectionery section, one can could stand for hours: it probably surpasses Hollywood in terms of entertainment. A huge cake representing a hockey arena awaited the customer on a stand. The player figures were made of chocolate. A real work of art, and most importantly — accessible, quite accessible.
In general, this was a hypertensive topic. For Boris Nikolaevich and me, visiting the supermarket was a real shock.
As I am writing this book, my wife today (September 1991) went to the store to buy milk at 7 am, but there were queues. Queues are everywhere: you have to stand for 2 days to buy sugar. And this is here — in Moscow, in the second half of the 20th century, 73 years after the Great Revolution. At the time, when, according to Khrushchev’s calculations, we should all already be living under communism. Or maybe what we had built in the USSR is the true communism?
At the exit from the American supermarket, the girl sitting at the cash register didn’t not have to count anything. In her hands, she held a small device that resembled a hair dryer, which she quickly ran over the price code on the packages. After this operation, the price appeared on the computer cash register screen, the customer paid and could freely pass through the electronic turnstile. Well, what else could be simpler and smarter than such a system?
When we left the supermarket, the administrator gave us a present: a huge plastic bag with the packs of food from this store.
I fully believe that it was after Houston (after visiting the supermarket), on the plane, that Yeltsin’s last faith in his Bolshevik way of thinking finally collapsed.
Perhaps, in those moments of spiritual turmoil, the decision to leave the Communist party and join the struggle for supreme power in Russia irrevocably matured in him.”
It was then that Yeltsin realized that all the stories of “international journalists” about American workers who allegedly were dying in hellish poverty and dreamed only about moving to the USSR, all these stories were nothing more than propaganda. Even the party “elites” did not know that.
I know the dissolution of the USSR was much more complicated than one person, but this alcoholic piece of shit destroyed the lives of millions of people and set the history of humanity down a rapidly destructive path just because he was amazed by some brands of ham and tinsel. To Yeltsin being able to chose from a thousand brands of mass-produced highly processed junk food that's all owned by one conglomerate was more important than maintaining his country. Fuck Gorbachev but especially fuck Yeltsin, at least Gorbachev pretended to care about his people and communism while Yeltsin sold his country to a handful of oligarch thugs just because he thought there's no greater tragedy than being able to purchase 10 different brands of processed garbage.
Imperialism would have been able to disintegrate the Soviet Union, had the Soviets not destroyed themselves, had those responsible for the strategies and tactics and for the country's political and government policies not destroyed the country. In other words, socialism did not die from natural causes: it was a suicide, socialism was murdered.

Everything presented here is in no way canonical, but just a theory. Information presented may be updated over time and what has been worked here is everything that has been presented so far in Act II of Episode 8.
________________________________________________________________________________________________
The revelation of the existence of the "Astral Guardians" dates back to Astra's release in Act II of Episode 2.
According to her, the Guardians were centuries ago with humanity, guarding and mastering the power of radianite, long before the event of the first light even existed. On Astra's part, at least, she remembers that a group of astral guardians existed in the city of flowers (Lotus map) and who painted the entire architecture of the place, which now operated on the basis of radianite energy conduction imbued with roots coming from the huge lotus flower in the city center, which is a Nexus, impressively made in a rudimentary way, without any moderm technology.
But the guardians were not just nexus and architectures. They were probably not giant cosmic entities, but similar to humans in shape, as they ended up having children and consequently several descendants (with regular women or men at the time).
Living proof of this is Astra, she knows, and it is visible, that she is a descendant of the first "hybrid" children of these astral entities with ordinary humans several centuries ago. Her radiant powers were probably never awakened by the first light, but she was born with them.
But the whole story of these people ends there, Astra admits and demonstrates that she doesn't know much more than that, she doesn't even know how the astral guardians worked exactly to protect the cosmos and the universe, She is too young and has no clear direction of what she should do.
But, in all these centuries, is there only Astra as a descendant of these guardians? Very unlikely.
This entire tale is narrated from a small perspective of the world, by a person (Astra) who is not even sure about certain points of its origin. Even though many points are not false, there is still information missing.
The artifacts and the traces of radianite architectural structures are the work of these ancient guardians, and counting each one, we have a list from three current countries:
With a huge world like ours, which has become globalized over time, nothing prevents the Guardians from never being limited to a single region of the globe or people, but probably other groups of Guardians have explored other lands and cultures. Looking at the world map, these three countries are not very far from each other, apart from Ghana.
What I want to pay attention to here is each agent in the respective game in these regions: "Harbor, Astra and Yoru".
These are references that go unnoticed if you don't pay attention, but these characters seem to share simple, subtle similarities with each other:
I'll open a separate point for the same, as Yoru has been in the game before Astra was even released. His full name is Kiritani Ryo. "Kiritani" is a Japanese surname composed of two kanji: 霧 (kiri) meaning "mist" or "haze," and 谷 (tani) meaning "valley." Therefore, "Kiritani" can be translated as "Valley of the Mist" or "Valley of Mist" and "Ryo" is a common name in Japan that can be written with several different kanji, each with a distinct meaning. A common kanji for "Ryo" is 亮, which can mean "clear," "bright," or "illuminated." Another possible kanji is 良, which means "good" or "excellent."
Not only do we have references to ideas commonly associated with deities, but several Japanese mythological entities have some reference to the typical fog that exists in certain areas of Japan, something present in the kanji that make up real Yoru's name. In fact, "Yoru" in Japanese it means "night", another common idea in local mythology, especially with the god Tsukuyomi.
But going beyond the meaning of the names, in the game's lines, Yoru uses the term "god" to self-reference. It's a well-known line, especially because at first it's just something very edgy, at the first sight without much importance coming from Yoru and It's the clutch line, and it's written like this:
"Anyone else think they can kill a god?" - Clutch Line
Also in an unpretentious way, Yoru makes references to the apocalypse and the end of the world. On Yoru's part, they are just provocations, but on the part of the DEVS' choices adopting these specific terms, that's another story:
"Call me when the world ends again. I'd hate to miss it."
"I'm leaving now. See you at the next apocalypse."
Isn't that kind of what the astral guardians shouldn't be trying to do, at least according to what we know from Astra? There are lines from Harbor and Astra that subtly allude to avoiding some disturbance, disaster or death as well, just like see the "end" of the things and etc:
"My proximity to death really added to the fun."
"Yes, disaster averted."
"History is full of senseless aggression. Some things don't change."
And Astra:
"The world may be crumbling, not this place-o, they thriving! Feel that energy!"
"We saw the beginning, and the continuation. Now, the end."
"We defend this place-o, heh! We defend this reality!"
"Waste that Reyna, guys. Before she beast mode." (Reference to Reyna might ending up destroying the entire earth)
So what would this mean? Just that the lineage of the Guardians still persists, but that their current hereditary descendants simply don't remember or know anything about it and this matches what was presented in the Episode 8 cinematic, Retaliation. For some reason, the whole world forgot about radianite and these guardians, until the first light came, only the hourglass scions know this.
Yes, besides Astra, I'm betting a lot that Yoru and Harbor probably have hereditary guardian heritage and there could be other people in the world who are also descendants, even characters we already know.
But none of them are "gods". Just like Greek mythology, they would be the equivalent of "demi-gods", even though I don't agree with calling them "god" in any way, until now. No, just that they have this connection in their blood and nothing else and that perhaps they could have an as-yet-unrevealed role in history in preventing some future catastrophe or that they should have already done so, but for reasons already explained here, they couldn't... They are in the complete dark about this.

2024.05.17 02:36 Glacialfury [Reality Fiction] In a parallel world an SS recruit wonders what would happen if the Allies won WW2.

The following transcription has been translated for your convenience.
December 12, 1941
SS-Junkerschule
Bad Tölz, Bavaria
•••
“Heinrich Müller?”
Heinrich stepped forward and snapped to attention. A light snowfall swirled in the air, reddening his cheeks. But nothing could chill the pride in his heart on this day.
Colonel Hans Richter stood before him, resplendent in his black dress uniform and all the silver embroidery and medals decorating the stylish Waffen-SS tunic. The colonel regarded him with sharp features and sharper eyes, like gazing into a deep winter sky, eyes that pierced to the soul. Heinrich would follow the colonel’s example and forge himself into the consummate warrior and impeccable nazi. This was the way.
“Obersturmführer Müller," the colonel said. He was of a height with Heinrich but seemed so much taller in the moment. "You will now recite the Nazi oaths and join us in a thousand year Reich. Repeat after me."
Dialogue Redacted
Once the oaths to his country, the Nazi party, and most importantly, the Führer were sworn, Heinrich rendered the Nazi salute and stepped back to his place in line. Twenty-five recruits were in his graduating class, all bound for different divisions across the motherland. It took several hours for each recruit to come forward, recite the oaths and be welcomed into the Waffen-SS. Snow gathered on his uniform’s shoulders, danced around his eyes, and cold seeped through his polished knee-high black boots to numb his toes. Heinrich clenched his jaw and resolved he would not allow it to touch him, maintaining his stoic composure to the end. Anything else was unthinkable.
Once they were dismissed, he hurried out to the train station with his newly minted orders still warm in his inner jacket pocket. Crowds of civilians thronged the cobbled streets and collected outside various shops and restaurants along the walks. They parted before him as though he walked in a bubble the city could not touch.
The sky darkened. Snow fell harder.
Fat flakes piled on rooftops and in the streets, blown in gauzy veils and whipped into swirls by the wind. The train station bustled and the steps leading inside were slick with slush, but Heinrich would not allow that to slow him. He shouldered past an older couple who’d stopped to read the schedule and pushed through the doors, quickly making his way to a section reserved exclusively for the Waffen-SS. There he boarded the train bound for Munich, then to Dresden and a final switch that would take him all the way to Kharkiv, his first command attached to the 6th army, Totenkopf division.
Inside, the car was warm and ornate, with gold-embroidered red carpet flowing down the aisle and fancy carved wood paneling decorating the ceiling and walls. His seat was located near the middle of the car, beside the window, with room for one other to sit beside him. Heinrich stowed his gear and settled in just as the train began to move. The station slid past his window. People and soldiers stood on the various platforms along the city's outskirts and into the countryside. Snow sprinkled the land scrolling past outside the frosty glass, and the mountains beyond were hazy and soft around the edges. The rhythmic rocking of the train lulled him, and his thoughts drifted to the war, to the Führer and his brilliance, and to the new world they would forge out of its purifying flames.
“No, damn you," a man's deep voice roused Heinrich from his half-sleep. "Japan attacked the Americans. Not the Reich."
Heinrich blinked away the pull of sleep and glanced at a pair of SS enlisted soldiers sliding into a booth one seat up and across the aisle from him. The train rocked, and the steady clack of the tracks outside provided background noise that mingled with the muffled ebb and flow of a dozen conversations throughout the train.
Had he heard that right? Japan attacked America? Why? He sat up straight and focused on the two soldiers.
"So?" The smaller of the two men stopped and made an exasperated gesture. "Changes nothing, Hans. The Führer declared war on the Americans. They will talk their words and cower across the sea and pray the Reich does not come for them. They are soft, not soldiers.”
"I agree, Ewald," Hans said, shaking a smoke out of his pack and digging for a lighter. "But doesn't part of you hope you're wrong? Doesn’t part of you want to show the arrogant Americans what it means to be a real warrior?"
“Perhaps.”
Ewald flicked open his lighter and sparked a flame. He lit their smokes and they sank into a contemplative quiet.
Heinrich sat alert in his seat. Japan had attacked America. The Führer had declared war. First, the Soviets, and now the Americans. The news was troubling. The Allies were growing in strength. He would never question the Führer's brilliance, never doubt that the Reich could face the world and burn it to ash. Or at least, that's the lie he told himself. A different part of him, the part that quietly listens from the back of his thoughts, stirred with concern.
During his long months of training at the SS-Junkerschule, some of his classmates had expressed their disdain for Americans and their soft way of life. Air conditioning and automated dishwashers, party boy lifestyle. They believed them weak. Heinrich had silently disagreed.
Yes, the Americans lived a decadent lifestyle, with their cars, beach life and silver screens. Yet, Heinrich understood how vast America was from his time spent there as a boy on holidays with his father. They toured for months and barely scratched the surface of all there was to explore. That same silent part of his mind radiated alarm.
Heinrich didn't smoke, such things were discouraged and frowned upon in a Waffen-SS officer. But he found himself staring at the silken plumes rising from the cigarettes in the booth across the aisle.
"Excuse me," he said, scooting across the seat and leaning out of his booth.
Ewald turned to regard him with the coldest eyes he'd ever seen. One shade of blue from white and hard as winter steel. He took in Heinrich's uniform, the silver piping along his shoulder boards and the silver pips embroidered on a black background sewed to his collar. He straightened, and the haughty look in his eyes melted away.
"Sir?" he said.
Hans leaned forward to look past Ewald at Heinrich but said nothing.
"Could I trouble you for one of those?" Heinrich pointed at the cigarette Ewald held halfway to his lips.
Ewald blinked, glanced at the smoke, then back to Heinrich. "Of course, sir." He dug out another cigarette. The metallic clink of his lighter was a surprisingly pleasant sound.
"Thank you," Heinrich said once his cigarette was lit, and relaxed back into his seat, turning to watch the darkening countryside and the falling snow whisk past. The two soldiers returned to their conversation, their voices melding with that of the other passengers.
Heinrich sank deep into thought. The only sound that registered was the clack and roll of the train's wheels out on the tracks. Germany was now at war with every major power in the world, save Japan and Italy, and Italy was quickly becoming a non-factor. He drew on his cigarette and idly inhaled the smoke. It felt like he'd breathed in a lungful of water. The coughing fit that followed was beyond his control.
Ewald turned to grin at him.
"Welcome to the club, sir,' he said, and saluted with his smoke. Then he turned back to his conversation with Hans.
Heinrich considered throwing the cigarette out of the window. Who in their right mind would try these things and go back for more?
He decided to just hold it and let it burn. This was oddly comforting.
What was he thinking, having doubts? Even with the Americans and the Soviet swine, the Allies couldn't hope to defeat the Reich. God was on their side. Good was on their side. Everything the Führer did was to purify and strengthen their race. He would burn away the chaff so only the strongest remained. This was the way.
He nodded to himself, watching the landscape. But the silent part of his mind that listened and watched, quietly disagreed.
It said, what if?
What if the Allies won? Images of Berlin burning and enemy troops storming her streets flashed through his mind. Nazi flags smoldered in the streets beside shell-blasted panzers and bullet-riddled Wehrmacht troops. The glorious Reich was crumbling, her people weeping. The Americans advanced from one side and the Soviets from the other. Britain rained fire from above.
The world watched and rejoiced as the sun set on the thousand year Reich.
Heinrich shook away the disturbing images and drew long and hard on the cigarette, the coal flaring in the smoky dark of his booth. It burned his lungs like before, but this time he knew what to expect and resisted the urge to cough. His eyes watered, but he wasn't sure if it was from the cigarette smoke or the thought that the Reich might fall.
No, he told himself and forced a silent chuckle.
Hitler could not be defeated. Germany's scientists were years ahead of their enemies. The Wehrmacht were the fiercest and deadliest warriors in the world. The engineers had wunderwaffe secreted away so powerful Hitler refused to use them for fear of setting the world ablaze. The Soviets had been crushed, Britain was burning, France had fallen. America was an ocean away. What could the allies do in the face of such power?
He smiled, comforted by the thought.
No, the Reich would reign atop the world for a thousand years, as Hitler had promised. Theirs was a righteous cause, a godly cause and the almighty would not abandon them. They would reforge the weak of the world into steel.
He finished his cigarette and crushed it out in the ashtray on the windowsill.
Outside, darkness shrouded the land, and all he could see was an errant swirl of snow against the glass every so often. The train lulled him. He drifted toward sleep, and the silent part of him asked a final question before fitful dreams took him.
But what if?

2024.05.17 00:45 Best-Establishment28 Breach of contract

We signed a contract with an interior designer for a design fee to include site visits to the home to take measurements, design concepts and virtual presentations, sourcing and procuring items listed in the scope of work, and time for purchasing and delivery/set up of items in home. She has picked out all of the furniture and we were just about to purchase it when she told us that she is moving across the country in a month, just before we close on our home that she is decorating. She said she will fly down in a few months to finalize items, but she hasn’t picked out anything beyond the major furniture items. Her scope of work in the contract included space layout, furniture selection, window treatments, wall decor, accessories (lamps, decor, etc), rugs, ceiling lighting, accent furniture, and feature walls. She isn’t cheap and we have already paid half her contract. What options do we have here as she is not going to be able to complete her contract but we are kind of screwed as we’ve already paid a large chunk for nothing.

2024.05.16 23:34 Wise-Mud3418 [LONG] Fan Made V/H/S Plot #2

Hey y'all.
So, I've already done one of these before, would appreciate if ya have a read (https://www.reddit.com/foundfootage/comments/1cfhoqy/long\_fan\_made\_vhs\_plot\_updated/), I still think that "Terra Incognita" is my best piece of work, as the ending is pretty shocking and captivating, and something that hasn't been done before in the V/H/S series.
Without further ado, here is my second piece of my own vision for what can be a good V/H/S movie.
V/H/S REDACTED
The Tapes
Overarching Narrative - Legacy
Tape 1 - Home Sweet Horror
Tape 2 - The Glitch
Tape 3- Knightmare (Spelled like that on purpose)
Tape 4 - Altered
Legacy (Prologue)
A film major student Robert, decides to make a tribute to his late grandfather by making a project about his life as one of the most respected scientists in the country. Upon clearing up his inherited estate, Robert stumbles upon a metal box with a lock on it. After trying several combinations, he finally takes the hammer and shatters the lock revealing the box's contents. A collection of 4 VHS tapes stacked against each other alongside a piece of paper with only two words on it - "BURN IT !". As Robert's curiosity reaches it's peak, he decides to insert the first tape into the VCR, only to realise, that he just made a fatal mistake.
Tape 1 - Home Sweet Horror
The tape opens with a recording from the man's camera (Will) filming himself and his wife (Tracy) moving into a modern smart house with an integrated, advanced AI technology and security system. The AI system named "Eve" welcomes the newly wed couple into their new house stating that she will do everything to keep their house safe. The couple is mesmerised with the convenient and futuristic features of their home such as voice commands controlling opening and closing doors, kitchen appliances, etc.
As the days pass, subtle glitches begin to occur that are captured by the security cameras. Lights flicker ominously, doors lock and unlock without command, and Eve starts to display an unsettling level of control over the house. The AI’s once soothing voice becomes cold and mechanical, issuing commands and making decisions without input. Will and Tracy attempt to control the AI's system via their phones but it's met with the "ACCESS DENIED" message as all of the windows and doors on the first and second floors are shut down as an indicator of a potential intruder being home. Knowing that there is a high possibility that Eve won't release them from their own home the couple decides to destroy the AI's control center located in the basement.
As the couple makes a daring run towards the basement and tries to tamper and destroy the mainframe, Eve seals the basement door and releases the toxic gas into the house. As the couple struggles to breathe, Will drops his camera as it falls down and captures the couple's last breath as they convulse and spit foam out of their mouth with their eyes rolling backwards. As the camera begins to shutdown Eve's voice goes back to normal as it states - "Threat Eliminated, please enjoy your weekend"
Legacy (Interlude 1)
As the first tape ends Robert is sitting motionless, his face pale and eyes wide with horror. The room around him feels colder, the shadows seem darker. He glances around nervously, as if expecting something to leap out at him. Determined to understand his grandfather’s connection and the reason behind these tapes being in the house, he inserts a second tape into a recorder.
Tape 2 - The Glitch
Leonard, a self proclaimed hot-head delves into an Amazonian jungle to document his experience as a self-testment to prove to himself that he is capable of surviving in the most primitive conditions possible. After filtering the river's water he proceeds to make his way downstream, while on his path, he hears a strange sound that resembles a bird sound yet it sounds more human, as he pans the camera to left, he captures a glimpse of a chameleon like creature that camouflages itself along the greenery next to the trees, yet the size is resembling that of a human. Leonard proceeds to scare the creature away by charging it with an axe as the creature makes it escape, Leonard realizes that he is lost in the dense jungle and isn't capable of finding his way back to the stream. After setting up camp, Leonard decides to document his thoughts and plans of finding his way out, as all of the sudden his rhetoric is interrupted by a blood curtailing roar. He steps out with an axe and his head proceeding to taunt the intruder as using his camera's light investigate. Upon finding nothing, he goes back to sleep.
As the next day progresses Leonard is visibly morally beaten up, his speech becomes more sloppy and his drive to keep pushing is dwindling. As the sun beats down on his head, Leonard finally stumble upon the river after which he breaks down in tears. As his goes to fill up his water bottle, a disfigured, scaly, serpent like creature lunges itself onto Leonard's arm as it plunges it's teeth deep into his forearm. Leonard drops the camera as it captures his struggle to fight off the serpent, which he eventually manages to strike with his axe thus freeing his arm, after which he picks up the camera and proceeds to flee in panic leaving his backpack behind.
After hours of being lost again, Leonard's mental state proceeds to deteriorate, with him laughing hysterically at the camera as well as speaking gibberish. As night settles, Leonards is trying to make his way through the jungle as he proceeds to hear the blood curtailing roar again he pans the camera to the left as it captures the glowing eyes of the creature from the previous night. Eventually Leonard runs out of breath as he proceeds to get away, but stumbles and falls in the process. The camera captures Leonard backing into a tree as a gnarly, insect yet humanoid size like creature is slowing approaching him. Just as it seems that the creature is about to strike, it stops and backs out, as a loud voice from the speakers says "LIGHTS !". Confused and traumatised Leonard looks around as his surroundings are decimated from the holographs into a large testing area that simulates real life environments, revealing that the whole thing is an experiment designed to test human behaviour in the most stressed environment possible . A group of scientist lead by Robert's grandfather (Dr. Evans) approach Leonard and starts to medically exam him, measuring his pulse and examining his pupils. Robert's grandfather pulls out an audio recorder as he states that the experiment is successful and that the team is moving to Phase 2 as the scientists take shaken Leonard away.
Legacy - (Interlude 3)
The second tape ends abruptly, leaving Robert in a state of shock. He breathes heavily, sweat glistening on his forehead. The house feels more oppressive now, with strange noises echoing from the walls. He begins to notice subtle changes in his surroundings—furniture seems slightly out of place, and there’s an unsettling feeling of being watched. Despite his growing unease, he presses on, inserting the third tape into the VCR.
Tape 3 - Knightmare
The tape begins with a news reporter standing outside of the sealed off area by multiple patrol cars, as well as FBI and SWAT trucks. The reporter tells the audience that the raid is currently in progress as the FBI investigates a secluded tech Mogul for allegedly stealing governments classified material on technology for his benefit.
The footage shifts to the helmet cameras and body cams worn by the FBI agents - David, Ken, Octavian, Paul and Austin during the raid. As they enter the front of the house they are greeted by an ominous decor as well as artefacts from different time periods. As the team enters the main dining hall they stumble upon a massive machinery that doesn't look like anything they've seen before. All of the sudden the machines make a very loud clunking noise as the objects within the room begin to levitate, a huge wormhole opens up sucking the team in. As the team regain their footing they see that they are in the middle of a Jousting tournament in a castle's court in Medieval Europe. The cheering crowd goes silent as they take a look at a newly arrived visitors. The priest shouts in Old English "HERETICS GET THEM", as the crowd and the knights try to apprehend them the team opens fire upon the attackers killing several within seconds. The camera perspective shifts between each member, as Octavian is penetrated with a spear from behind. David gives the order to fall back, as the team enters the castle's kitchens.
Just as Austin is the last to enter inside he is snatched from behind and is taken towards the castle walls from which he is thrown upon onto huge wooden spikes that serve as a protective barrier around the castles foundation. As Austin's body camera captures a large wooden pike sticking out of chest facing the sky, he takes his last breath as his head turns to the side with his helmet camera capturing the peasants who have been thrown off the walls.
The remaining survivors David, Ken and Paul barricade themselves as they proceed to understand what is happening. Their discussion is interrupted by the door bursting open as several knights rush into the premises. The team goes up the spiral staircase with David throwing a grenade to slow down the pursuers. As they make their way atop of one of the towers the team realises that there is no way, after which Paul commits suicide by shooting himself in the head with his pistol, after which his helmet falls down into a muddy courthouse as the camera captures a glimpse of knights taking David and Ken prisoners. The camera cuts to black.
The camera resumes recording as huge crowd seems to be gathered in the courtyard for something. A curious peasant picks up a helmet and puts it on his head. The camera capture a stripped down David and Ken being tied to the stake as the priest proceeds to preach and accusing them of witchcraft, David and Ken cry out for mercy begging the crowd to let them go. Crowd not understanding modern English proceeds to cheer even louder for the priest. As the camera's battery begins to die, the torch lights up the hay beneath the spikes as flames engulf the screaming members of the team.
Legacy - (Interlude 4)
After the third tape concludes, Robert is visibly shaken. His hands tremble as he reaches for the final tape. The atmosphere in the house has turned sinister, with lights flickering and cold drafts sweeping through the room. He feels a presence, as if something is lurking just beyond his vision. He hesitates for a moment, then takes a deep breath and inserts the last tape, bracing himself for whatever horrors it contains.
Tape 4 - Altered
The tape begins with grainy footage inside a sterile, dimly lit laboratory. Four scientists, including Robert’s grandfather, are preparing for a highly confidential experiment that is recorder by a stationary camera as well as several cameras mounted to the wall. A woman is laying strapped on the table as she proceeds to panic, asking the team about her whereabouts. Robert's grandfather begins to ask her basic questions about herself to which she reacts with anger and despair.
The team prepares several syringes filled with transparent liquid as Dr. Evans (The pops) takes out his audio recorder and says "Subject 17 - Sarah Miller, Time of the Experiment - 10:00 AM". After the recording is done, over the course of several minutes the team injects Sarah with the transparent liquid as she proceeds to resist but all futile. At first, nothing happens, but then she begins to convulse violently. Her screams turn into inhuman roars, and her body contorts in unnatural ways. The other scientists rush to contain the situation, but Sarah breaks free with terrifying strength. She proceeds to bite one of the scientists into the neck as she takes a chunk of her skin into her mouth as blood splatters over the room and covers one of the camera lenses with blood.
After grabbing one of the cameras Robert’s grandfather manages to lock himself in a storage room, the screams and sounds of carnage muffled by a thick metal door. He records a frantic message, detailing the experiment and his regret, before the camera cuts out. The tape ends with the sound of the woman’s monstrous roars echoing behind the door. The screen goes black.
Legacy - (Epilogue)
The final tape ends as Rob's eyes are dark and hollow, his face gaunt and haunted. Suddenly, the room grows deathly silent. An apparition of his grandfather appears before him, revealing that the tapes were a conduit to transfer a dark entity into a new host. As Robert convulses and is overtaken by the entity, the screen cuts to black. Moments later, the image returns, showing Robert, now possessed, preparing new tapes for the next unsuspecting viewer. The film ends with the ominous image of the metal box being sealed shut once more, ready to be discovered by its next victim.

2024.05.16 22:50 Specialist_Wave_6607 Should I study primary or nursery education?

So stressed. In my country I have to choose between them, doing primary would not cover nursery too.
Primary Teaching: The pros are that it is what I want to do. It is my passion. It has better pay and better working hours. I have a lot of experience in it already. The cons are that my daughter would get stuck in childcare longer than I would like for training. The other con is massive - in my country this job is in crisis. There are no jobs available. Many people have to move abroad or into other jobs to make ends meet. I would be going to this on the hope it gets better with no indication that it will.
Nursery: More job security but less pay and worse hours. Would have more time during the training with my daughter. But when I did a work experience I hated it but it might just have been a bad setting. I like the idea of it. Is the more sensible option.

2024.05.16 21:32 cloudfroot How much support for my friend's pregnant sister is too much?

Hello everyone! Here's some necessary context:
Recently, my best friend (about a decade of friendship) told me that her older sister is having a baby. My bestie and her whole family are super happy, and I am too!!! My best friend and I just graduated from college so for her this is the first time someone close to her has been pregnant, and she is super excited to be an aunt.
I have met her older sister many times and I am very fond of her, but I only see her when my bestie invites me to something and her family is also there. I probably see her a couple of times a year, during holiday parties, dinner, etc, we are kind of like family friends in that way - I have sis-in-question's number but I only text her to ask what she is getting her sister (my bestie) for Christmas, that kind of thing. Of course we are very friendly and chat when we see each other though.
Back to the point of this post. I obviously want to help my friend's sister in any way I can. It just so happens that I love to cook and sew so I was thinking I will definitely make her some food and some easy freezer meals as her due date approaches. I was also thinking of maybe making some clothes for the little one once we know more about the gendesize or making some decorations/toys/blankets for the nursery. My only concern is I don't know at what point would making things as gifts be weird or too much...I definitely think making them some food is helpful (ofc I will ask about preferences, allergies, etc) but is making clothes or things for the nursery overstepping ??
I don't have any siblings and my own family and I have never been very close so I don't really have any experience with the etiquette in these situations. I am so happy for my friend's sister and her family, I just want to help them out in any way I can but I don't want to be weird or make her uncomfortable. Maybe I should ask the sister if she would want me to make anything before just giving her stuff? What do you guys think. Pls help.

2024.05.16 19:05 TayTayCools Furniture Placement Ideas?

Furniture Placement Ideas?
Hey everyone! I posted about two months ago about my move to NC from TX, and I have finally settled on an apartment. Thing is, I'm worried about furniture placement in it since I'm downsizing from a 2bed to a 1bed so I'd prefer to donate any furniture that won't fit before moving it halfway across the country.
If anyone has some ideas for placement I'd love to hear it!
Mainly in the living room since I'm trying to fit my desk, bookshelves, couch (loveseat), cat tree, and maybe a small place to eat at. I'm not worried about my bedroom furniture, since I just have my bed and a dresser.
My desk is for my gaming pc and won't be used for work so I'm not worried about creating a seperate "work" space. I mainly use it for playing D&D with my friends and I'd prefer to have it in my living room. The bookshelves I have are the Ikea Billy bookshelves in the wider size with doors on the bottom half, and I have 3 of them. I'm open to getting rid of them if need be but I'd like to keep them all. I'd love to keep at least one wall somewhat clear for a gallery wall, but a tv wouldn't be too much of a problem. Finally I'd love to keep good access to the windows avaliable, and maybe have a cat tree near them for my two cats. The windowsills are very deep so I can store plenty of tchotchkes and decorations on them.
I'm open to getting some new furniture over time, likely through thrifting and such, so feel free to make suggestions that might include different furniture/elements.
Thanks so much for reading and for your help!!
TDLR: Furniture placement help in the living room, including a desk area!
Floorplan! My unit is actually a mirrored version of this floor plan, if that helps with placement.

2024.05.16 15:05 Fancy_Bumblebee_127 Positive perspectives on super common name.

My own first name is quite uncommon (normal name but not used often) and my surname is only within my family so if you googled the surname, the only results are about me and my immediate family. I love the uniqueness and for some reason consider it an important feature of an ideal name.
My husband and I have loved one name for a long time but now that I am pregnant, I realised this name is like the three top most popular names both in the country we live in and my home country (which I find relevant because I simply do). Think popular like Olivia. We also know another baby who already has that name and our child will be meeting her often. Two of my small group of friends are also called that same name. Sigh. It is super popular, trust me. When my husband and I agreed on that name btw, I didn’t know either of this friends and have never met anyone with that name. Now, for some reason, I cannot get over the idea of my daughter going to school and there potentially being one to two other girls with the same name in every nursery/school/university class that she will ever attend. I hate it, I think it would make her maybe feel less unique and special (because that’s how I would feel, I’m aware she might end up having a different interpretation). There are not many ways to make a nickname out of the name btw and also, I would not want to give her a name already predicting that she would need to actually not use it and use a nickname instead.
Can someone tell me some positive perspectives of having a very common name? Asking because I do actually love the name, just hate that it is so popular.

JNMIL is sabotaging her weekend with our kids over her very old fashioned views on car seat safety, and of course blames me.
This ended up being much longer than I thought it would.
Background info: - we do not live in the US. Car seat standards are lax in this country compared to my home country (USA). - I’m an immigrant in the country I live in. I will apply for citizenship this fall. - my in laws don’t speak English. I can get by in their native language but am no where near fluent. My husband is fluent in both. - we do not own a car, we rent one when needed, and only have one car seat per kid.
We have a three day weekend coming up. My husband is neck deep in writing his PhD dissertation and had the idea of taking the kids (girls ages 5 & 2) to see his parents. He could write and work while they spend time with the kids. I would stay home and get some much needed deep cleaning done of the apartment and organizing, stuff I can’t do with kids around, and some alone time. I also don’t have a good relationship with my MIL and really limit my time with her.
My husband didn’t feel comfortable with driving three hours alone with the kids so he booked a train. He would not bring car seats as he would have the stroller, kids, a bag, etc. At first all was ok. Then this week five days before the long weekend, my MIL decided she didn’t want to take public transport with the kids and wanted them in her car. So unbeknownst to us, she set off on a quest to find car seats. She contacted a friend of ours who lives near her and has kids. They had two seats, one adequate for our 2 year old (I looked it up) and a dusty old booster that was over ten years old. I said, absolutely no way will my 5 year old be in that seat. I told my husband we need to just buy seats for his parents to keep on hand. He told his mother this. She exploded. She said she does not want us to buy car seats, she thinks we are over reacting and the seat is fine, that I (being foreign) am making a big deal of it. She said the culture here around car seats is different and that I’m being stupid. She said car seats are too expensive to waste money on. Now, husband and I live comfortably and can buy new seats without an issue financially. My in laws are much better off than we are, and have a lot a lot a lot of cash sitting in the bank. We never asked them to buy seats, nor did they ever offer, but the price of the car seats is a huge issue to my MIL. Where I believe the safety of my kids is way more important than money.
My husband is furious. He’s fed up with his mom and wants to cancel the entire weekend.
She’s now texting me, my husband, and the friend with the seats non stop to try to change our minds. (The friend is being very supportive and agrees with my views on the car seats).
She’s saying we can’t keep the kids from her over this issue. We said she’s welcome to come visit us. She refuses to do that as we can’t host them (very small apartment) and hotels are expensive. She blames me for my husband taking so long on his PhD and needing the weekends to write (we have two young kids and he works full time. He’s in year 6 of his PhD.)
I’m so annoyed. I was going to have a BREAK. 72 hours alone in my apartment. I had dinners with friends planned. My 5 year old was going to spend time with her favorite person, her Opa, my FIL. As usual, he’s been silent over this issue. My husband was going to have multiple blocks of uninterrupted time to work.
He will still get a full day in the library to work if we stay home. I won’t get my big cleaning projects done for a few more weeks. We will have family time and enjoy the nice weather.
And my JNMIL will fume while sitting in her ugly orange leather chair in her ugly orange and red decorated living room. And blame everyone but herself for ruining her weekend.
