I think this is likely a coincidence because it's a very strange way to encode the radius of the Moon, and also a height of 279 Egyptian cubits would lead to less relative error than the actual height Of 280 Egyptian cubits. I think its safe to say that if the two were to fight even though the orangutan is smarter, the silverback gorilla would almost always come out on top, although they are both exceptionally strong animals, gorillas are larger and far better built for fighting as well as being more agile on the ground
A more even match would be a male orangutan and a female gorilla as the orangutan would have a size advantage but it is still unclear as to who would win here.

So, this is a post because I am a crazed worldbuilder who will absolutely ignore anything "real" if it gets int he way of my fantasy, but I will also still ground things in as much "real' as I possibly can.
TLDR: Using Biomass Production (the amount of living stuff in a given area produced each year) is a huge amount of work, but gives your biomes a lot more "feel" in terms of being something real. Understanding the nature of your biomes is important when writing about them or creating random encounters in them.
So, what is Biomass Production?
Well, in this sense it is the total mass of all living stuff in a given area, accounting for new growth and death of old growth, including birds, bugs, animals, and plants. 75 to 80% of biomass is generally going to be things like nematodes, bacteria, plants, and stuff that isn't really thought of as all that interesting in most cases.
And that remaining 20% is everything else. "swims, crawls, flies, or squats" as the saying goes. It even includes people (who, despite the 8 billion of us on Earth, are still a fraction of a percentage).
Biomass is normally recorded as (gC/m²/yr), or grams of carbon produced net per square meter of an area each year. Different biomes have different Biomass numbers:
The biomass of different biomes varies by biome:

• Tropical rainforests: Have the highest biomass of terrestrial biomes, with an average annual productivity of over 2,200 grams per square meter. Their warm, moist climate and abundant rainfall throughout the year create favorable conditions for plant growth.
• Coral reefs: Have the highest biomass of aquatic biomes, with an average annual productivity of over 2,500 grams per square meter.
• Deserts: Have a biomass of 2–10.
• Grasslands: Have a biomass of 1–3.
• Shrublands: Have a biomass of 3–12.
• Woodlands: Have a biomass of 10–30.
• Mature forests: Have a biomass of 20–50.

Generally speaking, oceans have the highest biomass, and the more rain you see the more biomass there is. Note that an old, huge tree has a ton of biomass -- millions of grams per square meter.
For those in the US that use a system other than metric, a close way to think of it is ounces per yard instead of grams per meter.
So how does this work, really? What's the value?
Well, let's say that a desert has a value of 4. of that, 3 grams will go to plants in a given meter. that means that in roughly 9 square feet, there is only enough stuff to make a single small tuft of grass that doesn't even weigh an ounce.
In a square kilometer, that's 3000 though -- enough to put about 6 small cactuses that weigh less than a pound each. It is also a 1000 grams of animal -- about 2 pounds worth of living thing. WHich is why rodents and lizards are so very light -- all the rodents, lizards, birds, and such that live in that kilometer will total up to about 2.2 pounds (1000 kilograms).
A Jungle, though, is way more full of life -- plants and such. 1760 of that 2200 is given to plants, but in that square kilometer that's 970 pounds of animal life that is going to be around. A few rodents weighing a half pound each can go a long way to feeding a larger predator that weighs 100 pounds. Bugs, birds, etc all factor into that.
This is the power of knowing your biomass levels for your biomes -- you can make better calls and understand the ecology of your system more readily.
For gaming, it allows you to craft a more realistic random encounter table, for example. In writing, it tells you how likely there is to be a jungle cat or a poisonous snake when roaming the jungle or desert.
Now, in fantasy stuff, there is always a lot of beings who don't eat, and don't have mass. Naiads, Dryads, nature spirits, artificial creatures, and the like. These beings can be used pretty much willy nilly -- a Spirit Guardian of a sand dune is a lot more likely a problem than a desert mouse that survives by drinking its own sweat off its ears.
There are a lot of other factors that goes into this, of course -- but many of them are determined by the biomass available -- a food web for a jungle will be much more complex than that of a desert or a grassland, and the nature of the kinds of creatures that live there will be part and parcel of the challenges they face.
Now why did all of this come into my mind? Well, ever tired to figure out how many dragons can survive in a given area/ What do they eat? How much do they eat each day? What can they survive on?
Part of the reason that the Grams per Square Meter thing is used is that you can multiply in 10's really easy. 10 square kilometers is 4 square miles -- and if dragons are big, they need a lot of mass. Do they eat trees and plants, or just living things? How many living things do they need to eat each day? Elephants eat 169 kg of biomass each day -- 169,000 gC in most shrublands is a huge area to have to cover to get the food when that's going to be considered over a year and the amount of space they have to cover.
So, figuring that out, I learned how much space my dragons need, which in turn helped me to see how many there were, and also i learned what they ate and how they did it.
Biomass is useful stuff to know.

"One of the Witness's creations, I assume." Ak-Tol said, "Come, we must press forward."
Leaving the body of the creature behind, we progressed further into the broken Pyramid city. White roots from the Tree of Silver Wings wormed their way through buildings, warping their architecture and spawning smaller plant life in its wake. It was an odd sight, seeing the Traveler's terraforming ability mixed with the cold ambience of the Witness's Pyramid Fleet. Still, I wonder if this is closer to what Essence was originally, before the Witness was formed.
"I feel something." Oztect said, "A whisper on the edge of my mind."
"Already?" Zuloc questioned.
"What is it?" Ak-Tol asked.
"Nezarec's presence," Oztect said, "we must hurry."
We kept moving until we heard commotion. Rounding a corner, we came across a Tormentor covered in roots. Their suit was black, an indication that it either was taking damage or had been damaged. Their eye was blue and a flower was growing out of their head, a single root reaching down and into the spine, where another flower was growing.
Across from it were two enemies. One of them was similar to a being I'd fought aboard a Pyramid in Operation Pitfall, an apparent clone of the Disciple known as Rhulk. The other was one of the flying creatures from before, this time already enraged and in its metallic state. They were fighting.
"What is going on?" Oztect asked. "Why are they fighting?"
"The Tormentor must've been caught in the beam," I said, "that's my only possible explanation."
The flying beast rushed towards the Tormentor, grabbing onto their head and pulling on the roots covering their body. The Tormentor grabbed the creature and crushed it with their bare hands. The Rhulk clone rushed, glaive in hand as it charged up with stasis energy. The Tormentor swiped with their infected axe, but the clone dodged and swept their legs. As the Tormentor reached up, the clone froze and shattered their arms. In one final move, the clone spun its glaive in the air before bringing the blade down on the rooted Tormentor, killing them.
Then it looked up at us.
"Open fire!" I yelled, a redundant battle cry as my team's weapons were already aiming and ready to fire.
The clone roared as they spawned in a Resonant sentry. We took cover as the clone ran us down, rounding the corner and taking a preemptive swipe with its leg, almost hitting me in the face. Before I could respond, a blast of solar energy knocked the clone down. I turned to see another Rhulk clone, this time covered in flowers and roots, its eye glowing orange. I backed down as the stasis clone turned its attention towards its corrupted counterpart.
"What do we do?" I asked.
"We have to get to the source of this corruption!" Zuloc yelled over the commotion, "The disturbance is coming from further inside, from within the Tree of Silver Wings!"
"Then we head there," Ak-Tol said, "leave these two to fight."
We fled the clashing clones as a pulse ran through the entire ship. I looked up to find its source, the tree. I felt another pull. Something was messing with the tree, and I was feeling it somehow. From reports from Io, a Tree of Silver Wings is born from a mixture of Light and Dark. Is this why I can feel what's happening? What does that mean for something able to afflict it? An imbalance?
While contemplating, another flying creature swooped down, almost knocking me over. In response, Oztect released a solar orb, hitting the beast and causing it to retreat.
I felt something else. A voice. A whisper. We had to move.
The Pyramid shook again as another pulse occurred. The pull grew stronger. Paracausal forces on the ship were stretching my focus thin. Another creature flew down, or perhaps the same one from earlier, causing a distraction. Ak-Tol vaporized it with a shot from his void-empowered rifle.
Getting ready to run again, another rumble knocked us all down. I touched one of the roots, the unknown pull changing to a surge of feeling. The Tree of Silver Wings was at once a symbol of harmony and an intrusion on this Dark space. The Pyramid itself could feel, torn between pain and elation at whatever was happening.
I had thought we were walking in a dead ship, but that was not the case. Essence isn't dead, it is in constant agony.

I've put together a single world map that combines all the information we've gotten about the world: individual locations, continent names, majority race distributions, and other miscellaneous things. Here are three versions of it.

General Comments on Making These Maps

We've gotten two separate world maps from the Adventurer's Bible and then some cutaways in the Anime, and the two of them have very similar continent shapes. However, there are minute differences. I took the liberty of merging the two in a way that would make the most "interesting" shapes. I also added in probable islands that only existed on one or the other of the maps.
The biggest variation across canon maps is in the Eastern Continent and the Kakha Brud coastline. It makes sense, since it's been drawn the most and the one part that's been drawn at larger scales, but it's also frustrating since that's where the majority of the story takes place. Mapmaking is hard, and fantasy geography is harder, so I don't begrudge Kui-Sensei in the least for changing minute bumps in it as she developed her story.
I don't know if it was lost in translation, but the distribution maps never explained whether the areas marked indicated they were majority-areas for a given race, or plurality-areas. That's a big distinction that's not made here! We know there are lots of other races in Kakha Brud than just dwarves, and the magic school Marcille and Falin went to was mostly attended by gnomes and tallmen, despite being in dwarven territory.
One of the maps has exaggerated terrain features such as illustrations of mountains, highlands, trees, and rivers and lakes. While some of the rivers look impossible, I may try to see if I can turn that into an approximation of terrain features in the future, knowing what we do about the different continents.

Where's The Equator?

I genuinely don't know.
Embarrassing to say, yeah, but those are the breaks. I did my best to mark the two most likely locations as based on the full world maps we've gotten. Of the two, the one that makes it so there's a much larger southern hemisphere is my preferred one since otherwise a tiny world is even tinier.
We know that there are deserts on the Western Continent and the Southern Central Continent has rainforests / jungles, so somewhere around there is the tropics. Putting it too far north, though, doesn't match the Mediterranean Europe vibes of the Island. If the areas around of Utaya were detailed, or other southern locations were explored, maybe we'd be able to make a better guess. Perhaps we'll get some more information later on.
If there is a massive southern hemisphere, then another question comes up: what's there? Nothing? Fantasy Antarcticaustralia? Do they know in-setting?
All of this, also, is sort of assuming that the world is round and that the poles are both cold and the equator is hot because of real-world meteorology. There's a lot we don't know.

Comments about Locations

In no particular order:

• The Eastern Continent is the second most diverse continent of the bunch, with a total of 6 races, while the Western Continent is the most diverse with all 8 of the detailed Adventurer's Bible races present. The least diverse are the Central Continents and the Western Archipelago, tying at 2.
• What's with the elf enclaves on the Eastern and Western Continents? Are they politically independent of the Western Elves? Was Marcille's mother from the eastern continent?
• There are several islands off the eastern coast of the Northern Continent that have no majority race despite being south of the arctic regions. Does nobody live there, or is it populated by some other species not detailed? There is also one tiny, tiny island off of the Western Continent that had no coloration on any of the distribution maps.
• Utaya was apocalyptic. Based on the race distribution maps from the Adventurer's Bible, the area around its dungeon is completely bare of settlement by any humans or demihumans in a perfect circle that has a radius of dozens of miles, if not hundreds. We've been told that the Canaries placed a magical barrier and a monitoring team over the site since it wasn't fully closed, but if the map is true... yeesh. That's a containment sarcophagus for an area more massive than the entire Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. And that's the best they could do.
• On the Southern and Eastern Continents, tallmen, half-foot, and orc majority areas seem to be relegated to the highlands. Half-foots and orcs are only found on those continents.
• The Western Continent has lots of interesting regions. In the far north, there's an area where a majority enclave of oni (are they ogres when not from the archipelago?) and an orc population region is separated by a corridor of tallmen. On the northwestern coast, there's a large area populated by mostly half-foots.
• Also on the Western Continent, there's also a strange triple-point region on its far southern 'Toe'. There's some highland / badland humans, a gnomish-majority area, and one to two dwarf populations that all converge near the ocean on the southern coast. I like to think there's a city or something there to explain that.
• Why is the Southern Continent considered one continent while the Central Continents are considered two? Perhaps the Southern Continent used to be a single landmass, and it was shattered along its rift within historical memory.
• Also on the Southern Continent, there's a long sliver of dwarves poking into the borders between some tallmen and a maritime half-foot population. That wasn't an error on my part.

Stuff Related to End-of-Manga Spoilers

I didn't put the Lost / Restored Golden Kingdom on the map in any fashion because we never got a full look at its borders. That's the reason it's not on there.

Anxiety over reading - how to act on it?
I have had my first reading done on Psychic event. I didn’t know what to expect and was open minded but I felt I really need some guidance in life at this stage. I wasn’t giving anything away to the reader but the cards I pulled baffled me. I wish now I asked if I could take a pictures of the spreads. I tried to recreate it from my memory but I looked online at the pictures of this specific deck for so long that now I’m confused. First spread was about me, to feel my energy and what person I am and she was totally right. What also was there is a death card, ace of pentacles, ace of wands which she interpreted as I will be changing my job very soon. Which made sense as company I work for is going through change of ownership and I anticipate that I might have to leave but I knew I want to stay there as long as possible as it’s my only safe space in life right now. She was adamant it’s not a change of position, nor promotion it’s a complete cut and new adventure. And I will be in a new role by September! I have a two months notice to give, childcare issues and a month of holidays planned in August. It has made me stressed. There was a job I looked to apply but decided not to because it’s less pay and more hours than I can commit at the minute. I even started to pay attention to YouTube advert on pyramid working scheme - thinking… is this my chance I cannot miss? Love reading was very accurate with tower, ace of wands, queen of pentacles. She said, I need to do what I have already decided as I cannot stay in a limbo any longer (few days before I told myself I cannot stay married any longer as situation is not improving despite months of therapy)… After that is a blur as there was so many cards I was talked about it was overwhelming. Two cards that stood out at the end was ten cups and 10 swords on opposite sides - just to add to the pressure of choosing wisely. Can you please advise how to approach the job change situation? Is this going to happen to me regardless of staying still and not taking any action?

On my planet Sctelltis I had a really cool idea for a predator called a Hidikit that relies solely on speed and camoflauge to attack its prey rather than superior strength, bascially an overexaggerated ambush predator. Out of this idea came another, a trait decently similar to that of sloths and turtles which grow lichen and algea on their skin but in this case the animal's skin is so malleable it makes a makeshift soil for the plants to grow on. It was a hastily formed idea quickly jotted down in the middle of class and I wanted to know if it was actually possible.
Something that may make this feature more plausible is the area that the Hidikit inhabits. Sctelltis is a tidally locked planet (one hemisphere always facing it's star, the other always pointed away) and so rainforests would be hard to come by. The unrelenting heat would melt water away too quickly and it just wouldn't be plausible. To combat this (since I really like rainforests) I created an intricate and advanced mycorrhizal network (a fungal network) connecting every plants root systems. These fungi reach deep down into the surface of the planet transporting water from the ground to the plants on the surface in massive amounts, that arent found on earth but are vital on Sctelltis, in exchange for carbons and sugars. The massive amounts of excess water end up evaporating out of the rainforest plants creating a humid, tropical environment that fosters all kinds of life including the soil-skinned Hidikit.
Maybe a clade of the mycorrhizal fungi evolved to live in the Hidikit's skin using the water it drinks to provide nutrients to plants? Maybe the plants only live in its fur and I can scrap the idea entirely? No clue, I'm open to any scientific research, suggestions, and critiques.

In withdrawal again. I know more about this place than I care to. It’s a barren wasteland forsaken by the Gods. It’s haunted by the people you’ve failed and lost. Regrets accumulated in life find form here and they will begin their interrogation. It’s the kind of place where the more you know about it, the more lost you might become. It’s a dark place where the sun never sets and only the dry southwest winds blow. It’s the domain of lizards where only sharp pointy things live. Nothing is soft. It has a few lessons to teach you so be receptive. Opiate sickness is a full body synaptic shit show of clammy pain and suffering. I really should mention the feeling that there is a pissed off and desperate devil trying to crawl out of your torso. He really gets nasty in the thin hours between night and morning. He’s an insatiable fiend but he’s not really a devil. He’s you. You might be wondering why not just sleep it off? Aww, that’s so cute! You must be a wise and learned sage from Tibet.” Sarcasm has become exhausting. There’s no sleep here. You won’t have the energy to sleep. Maybe just take a sleep aid then? Insomnia will not be cheated. If you’ve been doing dope with Morpheus and falling asleep in strange places the insomnia of detox is a rude punch in the face. A week ago I nodded off inside the refrigerator while reaching for a soda. Took a refreshing nap on a fire hydrant the next day. I used to think only horses could sleep standing up. That’s a myth. Now feather beds hurt. You’ll find yourself attempting to get comfortable in ridiculous places. Maybe on top of the water heater or under the kitchen table will offer reprieve? Nah. Look up the mental effects of sleep deprivation because it’s likely. You might have to check yourself if you start ranting about all the mysteries of the universe that you’ve recently figured out. Some of us are overrun by emotions and can’t stop crying. Snot, tears, and sweat mingle as one to become a primordial ooze of suffering. For better or worse it’s a painful trip down memory lane. You get to relive it all. It’s the nice memories that hurt the most. Or maybe it’s the confrontation with your shortcomings that’s worse. No, it’s the realization that you’ve failed people that loved you that hurts most. You’ll have plenty of time to sort it out when your brain starts to work again. Imagine yourself trapped in a garbage bag with the weakest version of yourself and you have Covid and food poisoning. You’re hot and cold simultaneously. You feel like farting but don’t because it’s really diarrhea trying to prank you. Have you figured out what goes inside garbage bags?Garbage, that’s what. And you’re it. That’s how you feel anyway but don’t lose hope. You’re not really garbage. You’re more like a baby learning to walk again. So get a hot shower, make yourself drink water, EAT! If you find yourself where I am you better have a few friends or family that Love you in spite of yourself. You’re gonna need them. They are the beacons of light that help you find your way out. If you’re wise you’ll enter this wasteland on your own legs before you get tossed in on your ass by the drug war pyramid scheme. It’s wise to get ahead of your problem. You don’t want to go through this in jail. The complete lack of energy is significant. A trip to the kitchen feels as daunting as a cannibalistic wagon train voyage over the Sierra Nevadas. You’ll naturally be drawn to dusty dark cellars where you and the precious can figure out who to blame for your current predicament. Don’t engage with the precious. He’s a demented substance abuser and if you really need to pass blame this is probably his doing. Try not to venture out much because your hunch that you look like a desperate sweaty junky vampire is most certainly true. If a friend calls to check on you answer the phone! Stay in the light and have faith in hope, love, and hot showers. I’m going to see if this laying on a concrete sidewalk will be comfortable and anything more is futility. All you can really do is ride out the clock.

Yesterday's silly concern.
It was cold the next morning, a cold that chilled the windows and left all of the lawns in Stone Brooke gilded with frost. When I hadn’t heard Nicole stirring by nine, I padded up the stairs and inched our bedroom door open. She was fast asleep, or I guessed she was; my wife was somewhere hidden in the middle of a mountain of blankets. I moved to gently close the door but Nicole must have heard me. She asked me to turn the heat up.
“Are you sick?” I asked. “The heat’s already 70 or so.”
Nicole didn’t respond with words. Instead, she started to…hiss from under the covers. The sound started so low at first I chalked it up to my imagination. But the hissing got louder and louder until I backed out of the room, slamming the door. I fumbled with the thermostat cover before finally getting it open and cranking the heat up to 80-degrees. The hissing gradually trailed off until the house was quiet again.
I went to check on the kids next; both were hanging out in their rooms. Anna was sitting at her window, sketching the view of our new neighborhood. She didn’t notice me so I stood watching her. It always struck me how much Anna looked like her mom with her dark hair, bright eyes, and little Roman nose. Bryan was the opposite, blond like his dad and ever in search of new things to put together or take apart. I found him sitting at his desk, working on assembling his computer from a box marked FRAGILE STUFF CAREFUL CAREFUL CAREFUL.
Bryan was sitting at his desk setting up his computer. Charlie was waiting by the backdoor when I got downstairs so I let him out into the yard and stood on the deck while he did his business. After filling his bowl with kibble, I started searching for anything I could cook for the family for breakfast. We hadn’t made a grocery run since moving in and the food and snacks we’d brought with us for the trip were tapped out.
I closed the last empty cabinet and sighed. Maybe it would be good for us to all get out of the house for breakfast, anyway. A sniffle caused me to freeze, mind snapping back to Nicole’s weirdness the night before. But it was only Anna standing in the living room watching me fail to forage.
“Do you remember where we packed the Pop-Tarts?” she asked.
“I don’t think we brought any, honey-bee,” I said. “We might have to run to the store, first. Do you want-”
I stopped talking when I spotted Nicole watching us from the bottom of the stairs. Bryan was right behind her.
“Do you guys want Pop-Tarts?” Anna asked. “We don’t have any but I think we will soon.”
We gathered together to brainstorm a solution to our lack of groceries. I kept glancing at my wife as subtly as I could. Nothing she was saying was all that strange but the way she was speaking was making me more and more anxious. Nicole peppered her words with brief pauses from time-to-time and longer pauses when she was responding to questions. It was almost like she was double-checking her notes before opening her mouth.
Could it be a head injury? I wondered. That might explain all of it.
But other than the verbal delays, Nicole seemed perfectly healthy. Hell, she was practically humming with energy. It was her suggestion we finally followed to solve the breakfast crisis. She would take the kids on a walk around Stone Brooke so they could explore the neighborhood. I…I wasn’t in favor of the idea at first but I had a hard time articulating why, to my family or to myself.
In the end, with no good reason why Nicole and the kids shouldn’t go on a walk together, I reluctantly agreed. There was one line I drew, however; I would take Charlie with me to the grocery store.
Nicole’s nose was bleeding again, just a trickle of red under her nostril. “Don’t you think the dog would rather be outside on a walk? You can’t leave him in the truck; it’s too cold. And it’s not like you can take him into the store.”
“Sure I can. Hey, your nose again. Are you okay?”
“Are dogs allowed in stores now?” she asked, ignoring me, and quickly wiping above her lip.
“I’ll tell ‘em he’s a service dog if push comes to shove. Won’t be in there for more than fifteen minutes to grab some essentials, anyway. Half an hour tops.”
Something was bothering Nicole; she almost seemed angry. I saw her open and close her mouth a few times like she was attempting to form an argument but the words refused to stumble into existence.
Nicole rubbed her temples. “Fine.”
I was having a hard time swallowing and couldn’t find my keys for the longest time. Anna was the one who finally found them where I’d tossed them behind the television. The three of them stood on the porch while Charlie and I drove away. I know what you’re thinking. I know.
If I wasn’t comfortable leaving my dog with Nicole, how could I ever leave my kids? You have to understand, right then at that moment, I didn’t realize how dangerous my…my wife was to all of us. As far as I could tell, she was just acting a little odd. I never thought she’d hurt them. Never. Never. Keeping Charlie with me was nothing but a reflex, more good luck charm than anything else.
The kids are fine with their mom, I told myself. Everything is fine.
I repeated that mantra over and over in my head the entire drive from Stone Brooke into town. Charlie and I passed acre after acre of empty cornfields on the way into town. The sky was that sharp winter blue that’s so clear it seemed fragile. We got an odd look or two walking into the grocery store but nobody said anything and we shopped fast. Ten minutes after entering the store we were back loading food into the truck then roaring home. I was driving so quickly trying to get back that I caught the attention of a State trooper.
All told, the trip plus ticket ended up taking about forty minutes. I pulled into the driveway like it was a NASCAR pit stop.
“I’m home and I have Pop-Tarts,” I called out as soon as I opened the door.
The house was empty.
“Okay,” I said to Charlie. “It’s been less than an hour. They’re still probably on their walk. Let’s give them a few minutes before worrying, okay?”
I waited for another ten minutes then I called Nicole again. And again. I called her every five minutes for the next half-hour, then every three, then I just kept calling every time it went to voicemail. I was getting near the point where I called the police when Nicole and the kids walked in the front door. All three were covered in dirt.
“What happened?” I asked, running over to Anna.
Her face was dark with soil; black lines ran down from ears, mouth, eyes, and nose. Bryan was the same and neither of them were looking at me, just staring at nothing. Nicole was looking at me, though, watching me closely.
I wiped at Anna’s face. “What happened to you all? Is anybody hurt?”
Nicole shook her head and smiled wide but nobody answered. The only sound was a low growl. I turned to see Charlie backed all the way up to the opposite wall from us, teeth bared, a quiet snarl growing louder until it erupted in a series of vicious barks. I couldn’t stop staring at our dog. Charlie was the sweetest, mildest, afraid-of-his-own-shadow big dog I’d ever met. I would have been less surprised to hear him sing opera then growl at the kids.
“It’s okay, buddy,” I said. “Everything’s okay.”
I held my hand out and Charlie approached, slowly. When he got close, he began to whine. Just as he was starting to calm down, Nicole took a step toward him. More of a lunge, if I’m being honest. Charlie was out the still open door in an instant, running out into the neighborhood and disappearing behind our neighbor’s house before I was on the porch.
“Charlie,” I shouted into the bright, empty day. “Come back.”
I got ready to run off after him but hesitated on the second step. When I turned around, Nicole was watching me from the doorway, still smiling. The kids weren’t in view behind her.
“What happened on your walk?” I asked, forcing myself to sound calmer than I felt. “Why are you all covered in dirt?”
She didn’t answer me. After a few moments of silence, Nicole walked back into the house, walking up the stairs with the kids following in her wake like a pair of remora gliding after a shark. I experienced an intrusive thought watching the three of them: this is not my family.
My family is gone.
I shook that existential crisis off and hesitated. Something was wrong with my wife and my children and, as much as I loved Charlie, they needed to be my priority. Besides, Charlie was a relatively cautious dog and would most likely come back on his own soon enough. Knowing all of that, I still found myself walking out the door instead of up the stairs.
I’ll find him real quick, we will come back and sort everything out with Nicole and the kids, and it’ll all be fine, I told myself as I looked around the sunny neighborhood for any sign of Charlie.
The search was surreal, like I was dreaming. Some part of my mind, a big part, was screaming the entire time that I had to go back home immediately. Something was wrong with Nicole and the kids. They were in danger. They needed me. The thoughts banged around like bricks in a washing machine but, to my shame, I couldn’t force my feet to turn around. The fear was too great; this hanging, heavy dread that yawned behind me all the way back to my house.
I didn’t stop looking for Charlie until I reached the graveyard. The field inside the fence was disturbed, with deep rows furrowed into the dirt in what looked like a completely random pattern. At least two of the graves lay partially open, though I didn’t approach either edge to see how far down the holes went. Everything was rough; not the kind of regular lines and trenches I’d expect to see from heavy equipment or even shovels. It appeared the pits were dug out by hand.
A few minutes of staring at the torn ground snapped me out of whatever fugue state I’d been in all morning. Charlie would be okay on his own; I had to get to the kids, to Nicole. Maybe they were sick, a shared fever that was making them act distant and strange. Or there could be a gas leak at home. I remembered reading that CO2 poisoning could do terrible things to people before becoming lethal.
I got ready to run back home then stopped so suddenly I almost tripped. My eye had caught one of the trenches in the cemetery. It was shallow, maybe a foot deep and three feet long, carving out a slight curve at the base of a crumbling tombstone. At first, I thought pieces from the marker had fallen into the rut. Little white debris stood out against the black dirt. But then I noticed the specks moving.
Near hypnotized, I walked over and knelt on the ground next to the trench for a closer look.
Worms.
Dozens of pale, thick worms the length and width of my little finger squirmed around the hole. There was a smell to them from that close, not awful exactly, but also not something I’d want to buy in candle-form, either. It reminded me of rain and the scent released by trees when they first open in the spring. There was a sharper odor under that; musty and faint.
We had a neighbor who was a hoarder when I was a kid. Dad and I helped clean out their house after they died. I found two dead cats under their sofa, so ancient they were practically mummified. The worm smell was like that house, sickly sweet.
The white worms were milling around while I leaned closer and closer, still trying to convince myself that the shapes were just buried roots. When I was only a yard or so above the trench, all of the creatures suddenly froze. A moment later, they all began stretching up in my direction like flowers turning to face the sun. Then they stretched farther, a cluster of balloon strings reaching out three inches above the dirt, then six, then I was falling back onto my ass, crawling away from the pit.

About a quarter of my neighbors on the adjoining street were watching me run. Men, women, children, even a few pets were out on their lawns or looking from open doorways as I sprinted back to my house. I recognized Walter and June standing in their front yard. The U-Haul was back in their driveway. Even as surreal as my day was going, I still found it odd that they appeared to be moving in now instead of out. Their kids were marching boxes back into the house but stopped to stare as I jogged by. I was struggling for breath by that point, two decades removed from my high school track days with not much running done in-between.
Everyone that I saw out watching me seemed to almost be attached on a hinge, their eyes following me together, synchronized, craning their necks to track me. The way they all turned together made me think of the worms. I ran faster.
It was still late morning when I limped through my front door, utterly spent and gasping for air. Despite the early hour, my house was dark; every curtain was closed and heavy towels were duct taped over the blinds, completely strangling the light.
“Ni…cole,” I wheezed. I cleared my throat and took a deep breath. “Nicole, where are you?”
“Here,” she said, from the kitchen.
I tried flipping the switch next to the door but the living room remained pitch black. Some faint whisper of caution prevented me from ripping the towels and curtains down from the windows even though I desperately missed the light. I compromised by partially opening the front door, allowing a cloudy stream of sunshine to creep into the house. In that dimness, I saw why the switches weren’t working; the bulbs had been removed from the lamp in the corner and the ceiling fan.
The missing bulbs were sitting in a pile on the kitchen table, a small pyramid of glass and filament threatening to roll off at any moment. Nicole was up on a step ladder fiddling with the lighting fixture over the oven.
“Honey,” I asked. “Why are you changing all of the lightbulbs in the house?”
“I’m not,” she said, plucking the bulb from its socket. “I’m just taking them out.” Nicole looked down at me from the stepladder. For a brief moment, I didn’t recognize anything about her. “Could you close the door when you come in? You weren’t raised in a shed, were you?”
“Do you mean a ‘barn?’”
“Sure.”
I didn’t move. “Nicole, what…what is happening?”
My wife hopped off the ladder and added the bulb to the pile. “What do you mean? Be specific? And close that fucking door.”
The last part came out as a hiss. I struggled to swallow and part of me, a large part, wanted to just walk out the door into the sunlight and keep walking. Then I thought of Anna and Bryan and their dull, drained faces, and I decided that whatever the fuck was going on was about to stop.
“You’re not my wife,” I said.
I wasn’t planning on saying that to her but I recognized the truth of it as soon as I blurted it out.
Nicole nodded. “It feels better to say it out loud, doesn’t it? She thought you would have figured it out earlier but it’s okay. We know it’s a lot.”
Her agreeing with me was the last thing I expected. Laughter, annoyance, confusion, even outright anger I could have dealt with but her casual acceptance of an insane thought made my brain reset. While I stood, open-mouthed and dumb, Nicole walked past me into the living room. I heard the door close gently and then the light was gone completely. My wife’s homemade blackout curtains left the kitchen one big shadow I was soaking in.
“Sit down and I’ll tell you everything and then I’ll ask you a question,” Nicole instructed, walking back into the room.
I fumbled around until I caught hold of the back of a chair then dropped into it. My eyes were adjusting to the gloom; there was just enough light leaking in that I could make out shapes and forms, if not details. So I heard more than saw Nicole sit across from me at the table.
“This is scary,” Nicole began. “But everything will be fine as long as you pay attention. Your wife is safe.”
In the dark kitchen, her voice sounded less like her voice than before. Thinner.
“Where’s my wife?” I said, barely able to get the words out.
“Right here,” Nicole said. “Your kids, too.”
A ringing started in my ears and it was hard to breathe normally, like I had to fight for escaping oxygen.
“What is happening? What the hell is going on, Nicole? Why are you acting…”
“Different?” she asked.
“Insane,” I countered.
She wrinkled her nose like I’d just commented on new wrinkles on her face.
“Some cognitive inconsistency should be expected during the transfer,” Nicole said. “Your wife resisted. Aggressively. That resistance caused a lot of damage before it was put under control. Her mind isn’t exactly what it used to be.”
My night vision was fully in and just good enough that I could see my wife leaning over the table between us. It wasn’t quite clear enough for me to be sure but it did seem like she was smiling.
“You sound fucking crazy,” I managed. “I’m going to call an ambulance.”
I tried standing up until only to feel an iron-strong hand push me back into the chair.
Bryan put a hand on my other shoulder, as well, rooting me in place.
“Relax, dad,” he said, voice rough like he was recovering from a cold. “Just listen to what she has to say.”
I struggled against my son for a moment but he was immovable. Anna was with us in the kitchen, too; I could make out her silhouette watching from the corner.
“If this is a family prank or something…it’s great,” I said, trying not to shake. “It’s hilarious. Let’s go outside and laugh about it.”
“Too bright,” Nicole whispered. “We don’t like it. Now, I’m sensing the same resistance from you that your wife had. That’s a caustic emotion, you know. Your stubbornness.”
Nicole slid her chair away from the table and padded behind me deeper into the kitchen. I tried to turn with her but Bryan held me tight. She began humming softly, which was occasionally interrupted by the rasp of metal drawn across wood. When Nicole sat back down across from me, there was a long knife in her hand.
“I used to remember what specific task this one was for,” she sighed, jamming the tip of the blade into the table. “Another memory lost because she had to put up a fight. Anna, sweetie, turn on the kitchen light for your dad but thumb the dimmer down, okay?”
“What are you doing?” I asked as the weak but sudden light left me blinking. “Why do you-OH GOD STOP.”
Nicole splayed her left hand out on the table at an angle. She pressed down on the knife, causing the edge to drop down like a paper cutter. The knife took off almost all of her pinky, most of her ring and middle fingers, and the tip of her index. The room was silent until I’d sucked in enough air to start screaming. Nicole’s expression was half-way between patient and bored.
“Look close,” she said, pushing her maimed hand closer.
Spurts of blood gushed from little, white veins, already soaking into the tablecloth. I gathered a deep breath to scream again then choked when I got a better look at the blood vessels, which were already slipping away into her hand.
Worms.
The worms inside of Nicole’s ruined fingers were the same pale color as the ones from the graveyard, only these were smaller and thinner than the goliaths I’d seen squirming in the ground.
“Wh... … …what?” I gasped.
Anna brought her mom a dish towel from the sink, which Nicole wrapped around her new stumps.
“Don’t worry,” my wife promised, “they’ll grow back. That’s one of the gifts we can give you. It is a shame about the few we lost,” she added, nodding toward the pile of digits bleeding out on the table. “But I do believe this has saved us a heck of a lot of time getting you caught up, right dear?”
I couldn’t answer, couldn’t break away from staring at Nicole’s fingers. They were twitching as tiny white worms and pieces of worms fled the flesh. Blackness closed in quick and the next thing I remember is waking up in the living room on the couch. Nicole, Anna, and Bryan were all sitting around me, Nicole still pressing a red towel to her hand.
“Are you okay, daddy?” Anna asked.
I sat up, slowly. “What the fuck are you and what did you do to my family?”
Nicole smiled. “It’s us. We’re us. Just different. And more. A lot more, actually. You saw the cemetery already, right? Down the road?”
“Couldn’t really miss it,” I whispered.
“Everything started there,” Nicole continued. “Now, a long time ago–long for you but even longer for us–we crawled there in the dark earth thinking nothing, blind, deaf, and dumb. But then the Voice. Oh, the lovely Voice.”
My wife was smiling; Anna and Bryan looked nearly rapturous.
“She came and spoke to us every single day after they buried her husband,” Nicole continued. “He was a farmer and she was his devoted wife. They used to live here when this was only one little farmhouse and acres and acres of fields. She visited his grave each morning and evening for many, many years. The widow left her dead husband flowers and gifts but, best of all, she talked to him. Which meant that she also talked to us as we ate what was left of him. Oh, and she sang.”
Anna and Bryan began humming a catchy tune that I slowly recognized.
“They'll throw in dirt and they'll throw in rocks,” Nicole sang. “And they won't give a dam-m-n if they break the box. The worms go in, the worms go out, the worms dance nightly up-on your snout.”
Nicole wrinkled her nose again, this time with a grin.
“We listened,” she told me, leaning over the couch. “We listened and learned from the Voice. She told such wonderful stories. She made the world sound perfect and good, each memory of a day with the Farmer seemed worth a thousand of our lives. The widow made us envious, you understand? We began to hate the Voice in our own, tiny, mindless way. We hated her constant, mewling joy.
“It wasn’t fair that she got to live above, to feel seasons, to feel anything. That hate brought us together, made us less deaf and blind and dumb but there was only so much we could process as we were. So we decided to change. To grow. To take from you everything that we were lacking. To make the world fair. Do you understand? Or would you like to see more?”
Now it was Anna holding the kitchen knife, the tip of it just under one bright, blue eye.
“I don’t mind showing you, daddy. Nothing hurts anymore.”
“Stop,” I moaned. “Please, God, stop. Stop. Stop. STOP IT STOPITSTOPSTOPSTOPSTOPSTOP.”
“Easy, dear,” Nicole cooed, brushing the stumps of her missing fingers across my cheek. “There’s no need to be upset. We won’t show you anymore. We know you understand.”
I turned away from her touch. There was a smear of her blood from my nose down my jaw and something else, something more solid. Something squirming.
“Fuck.” I wiped my face clean against a couch cushion. “This isn’t real.”
Nicole sighed. “It is real. Say it. Say it now or see everything.”
She lifted the hem of her shirt to just above her belly button. Her stomach was a mass of knots, twisting and untwisting just under the skin. Anna handed her the knife.
“It’s real,” I whimpered. “It’s real, I understand, it’s real, I’ll do whatever you want, it’s real, it’s real, I believe you. Don’t show me anymore.”
The three of them were smiling, beaming even. Nicole put the knife on the coffee table and smoothed out her shirt.
“I knew you’d get it,” she said. “They weren’t sure you’d be the right one but we knew.”
“Right one for what?”
“Well, here’s the question I mentioned earlier: have you ever wanted to be a tour guide?”
I couldn’t stop staring at the red and white stain on the cushion. Parts of it were still moving. I turned the pillow over.
“Huh?” I asked.
There was a knock at the door that stopped Nicole from answering. Bryan walked over and opened the door. A few of our neighbors walked inside, then a few more. I recognized Walter and June and their children along with a dozen more I had only glimpsed during my walks with Charlie or hadn’t seen at all.
Everyone was watching me, waiting.
I understood. Slowly, terribly, inevitably; I understood.
“Of course,” I sobbed. “I’ve always wanted to. Where do we start? What do you want to see?”
We put up posters for Charlie all over Stone Brooke. He’s been missing nearly a week but I’m sure he’ll turn up. I thought I saw him a few days back at the edge of the forest but it couldn’t have been him. That dog had the same dark gray coat as Charlie but it ran off as soon as I called his name and threw a rock at the tree next to him.
But I’m sure he’ll turn up. The whole neighborhood is keeping an eye out. They really are lovely folks and there are more moving in every day. I doubt there will be any houses still available within, oh, three or four months, at most.
That was fine with us. It meant our property value would keep going up, up, up and away.
We started a neighborhood watch; movie nights, too. Mostly documentaries but a great mix of everything. We set up a projector and screen right outside the little graveyard so families can set up lawn chairs around the stones and spend the whole night together.
I even got elected as secretary of the HoA. It mostly involves planning: planning community events, open houses, and trips. Gosh, so many trips.
Museums, theme parks, beaches, cities; there’s so much curiosity in Stone Brooke. Just another of the million reasons this place is so perfect with the most incredible neighbors. Lovely folks, all of them.

Ok, so I’ve been on a “spiritual journey” (I use abbreviated commas because life itself is a spiritual journey) for around 5 years. Or shall I say I’ve been more aware of me “self” in this time. I’ve used mushrooms, dmt and lsd for most part, using them in shamanic rituals and practices and taking them seriously and not fooling around with them. I’ve done a ton of letting go. All the toxic people that were in my life are now non existent and I am now with my soul mate. Someone who mirrors my own journey back to self and is on this journey with me now.
So, a few months ago I had some LSD and some weed and a voice came into my head and spoke the words “clean my energy field”. Then all of sudden I could see thing blinking white light that shifted my perspective (with eyes closed) and was showing me that my mind or my perception wasn’t quite right. Then God, or higher self told me to focus my awareness on this greenish light and when I did it seemed to move my mind out of this energy that I can only describe as Satan and the colour would me purple. I say this because the energy itself had a face and was mega angry that this shift was happening. It’s like it was loosing me or somthing. Then this portal or what seemed to be opened up and I could see green trees and lavish rainforest type image. Btw the details here are very vague and it would take me a lifetime to actually write up exactly what happened. So I’m seeing the trees and stuff and then suddenly a big white light came down from above and there was being riding it. It had a loving presence about it. Completely opposite to the devil type energy that I saw and the white light was heading towards my 3rd eye. As it got closer my ego mind started to rationalise what was happening which caused the white light to stop and the being pointed at me and laughed in a very joking way. The white light was like a very long and bright cord. After the being laughed at me it went away and I was left in this space that I can’t describe.
Well since this experience I had more LSD and had shrooms a few weeks ago and all I saw was the Satan energy. Very evil and condescending and when I called out for God it was laugh at me. Like say you’re getting abused and you’re begging for it to stop and the abuser is getting off on you begging it was like that. It even happens when I smoke a bit of weed which is very rare now because if these experiences.
Anyway, now I can close my eyes completely base line sobor and I can see the same purple colour and the same green colour and it’s like there is fight for my awareness or my perspective. And if I follow the green light then I hear a sound in my head. It’s so loud and it makes me jump which makes it stop. I know this my ego that is apprehensive and is holding on.
Has anyone ever had any experiences like this? I kind of have a theory as to what has happened.
There are energy parasites out there, in here (mind) where ever we are (I understand reality is a projection from the mind) Anyway, if we imagine a parasite in our arm right now. Imagine it’s been spotted. Is it going to say “oh, you’ve found me I guess I’ll give up now and vacate myself” not at all. It’s going to fight and fight to stay and feed as much as it can before it is removed. I feel like this is the case. I feel like I’ve uncovered an energy parasite and my higher self is helping me to 1) get rid of it and 2) become more connected to source

One more thing before I close this off. After I did the lsd and weed and I uncovered this truth the time after it when I did more lsd the purple demonic energy was trying to convince me that hanging myself was the way to escape the torment. I’m that moment I wasn’t sure what to think or believe and lucky I have my other half to help me see sense and see that God would never ask for such an act.
From our limited perspective as humans in this form we never truly know what is going on. I just thank God for his guidence.
