Celexa and benadryl effects

Anyone experience a new “relationship” with OTC drugs after the surgery? Not the NSAIDS and things we know to try to avoid but like Benadryl, etc? Before surgery, my doc told me to take one Benadryl at night to help with both allergies and some insomnia. I could take Benadryl for two days MAX and then it would be like I took nothing at all. Insomnia and itching back. NOW, Benadryl is like a tranquilizer dart and I can easily sleep for 10 hours. Even when it’s taken back to back nights. I’m wondering if it’s an effect of the surgery or something else. Anybody else had “strange” tolerance shifts?

For years I’ve had issues with my sinuses, asthma, food allergies, and flushing. About 2 years ago all of these things seemed to increase.
My pulmonologist has been treating my asthma aggressively. I was on 60mg of prednisone for about 6 months and was eventually able to taper down over 2 years to 15mg (going up and down during flares) after adding new inhalers and Dupixent for awhile (am on Tezspire now, Dupixent caused too many side effects.)
It seems like the lower my prednisone goes, the more asthma/allergy exacerbations I have. Over the last month everything has gotten progressively worse as I’ve been trying to stay around 9-10mg of prednisone. A week ago I had multiple anaphylaxis-like symptoms when eating cheese bread so I assumed maybe I developed a wheat allergy. The symptoms went away after awhile (besides the lymph node area swelling) after taking more Zyrtec and Benadryl and using my inhalers. After talking to my allergist he said that a random wheat allergy was extremely unlikely, and when I was talking about tachycardia and flushing (especially after eating) he brought up MCAS.
I had heard of it before but that was about it, so I did some research and I’m just…. I don’t know I guess, sad? I have almost every symptom you can think of, and it would explain why I can’t seem to lower the prednisone dose without reactions. Over the last 6 months I’ve also developed new allergies to azithromycin, Augmentin, and fluconazole which I have taken for years with zero problems and that was also a red flag to my allergist.
Right now the only foods/drinks that don’t seem to cause flushing and the facial/neck puffiness are Boost drinks, Carnation Breakfast Essentials, milk, cheese, peach juice, Sprite, and potato chips.
He has ordered a bunch of labs that I need to get done and had me increase my Zyrtec to twice daily, along with adding Pepcid twice daily which seems to be helping. I’m already on Singulair and he said to keep taking that as well. I take Benadryl when needed during the day but it makes me so tired that I just feel useless. I do have an epipen thankfully because of several anaphylaxis episodes (some to foods I know I’m allergic to and 2 random ones that seemed to happen out of nowhere.)
I’ve been reading the subreddit and info online and feel kind of hopeless. Is it possible to live normally with something like this? I don’t care much about not having a wide range of foods to choose from but the thought of anything causing an allergic reaction freaks me out.
I decided to make this post after my husband’s cooking (I think smell maybe) caused allergy symptoms for the millionth time. Could these things just be something else maybe? My doctor seems to think that this must be the issue for all of my symptoms, especially since a lot of them don’t go together (joint pain, narcolepsy that developed around age 18, allergic reactions, temperature change intolerance, random rashes, GI issues, asthma/allergy exacerbations when super stressed, etc).
Sorry for the length! I just wanted someone to vent to that understands these things. 😔

Keep having negative side effects either immediately, after a couple refill cycles, or contraindications and just so exhausted going through the same "wait 2-6 weeks" to see if it's going to work or not.
Just venting and hoping other people can relate to the struggle of finding the right meds because I'm feeling pretty worn down by it all

Anyway, the usual stuff doesn’t work as expected for me. So what I mean is (not sure if whole Indica/Sativa stuff is a myth) but gummies from indica strains or strains that are higher in CBN tend to make my body feel more restless. Kind of like how Benadryl makes “normal” people sleepy but not relaxed whereas for me it’ll make me TIRED but restless and NOT RELAXED resulting in a complete inability to sleep. I’ve been taking jolly cannabis gummies and tend to do better with the sativa strains than the indica, although I’m still having trouble sleeping. I’ve tried CBD gummies on their own, hybrid, CBN gummies on their own. It seems for me I can relax more and sleep a little better with CBD whereas CBN has the opposite effect for me. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I feel like I’m so close to finding something that works for me but I just can’t get it right.

I am anxious literally 24/7 and it’s really effecting my life. But I’m terrified of taking meds for it…. I’m worried they will mess up my brain and make me worse or I’ll get addicted. I’m also afraid of the side effects- I heard they can cause long term damage to bone health and lead to osteoporosis which scares me. I’m also afraid of sexual side effects if I’m being honest.
I’m going through a lot of stress in life. My husband and I just bought a house. I got a full time 8-4:30 office job with a 45 minute commute each way and I’m only used to working part time in retail with a short commute. I’m having trouble fitting in self care to my newly busy schedule and feel pretty hopeless. I really don’t have an option but to work FT or else we can’t afford our mortgage and plus I need money. On top of that, my childhood dog passed away a few months ago and I’m heartbroken.
Overall, I’m having a difficult time managing everything. I lash out at my husband and we get into fights over it because I’m just not happy when I feel so stressed. I get angry at him for the littlest things and we argue. I just feel so overburdened and all my responsibilities are triggering my PDA so bad. I don’t even talk to my friends anymore. And again, I’m sooo anxious all the time. I’ve been anxious my whole life but it’s really amplified right now, and I’m struggling with emotional regulation badly.
My doctor prescribed me Celexa but I haven’t taken it yet. Should I just take the damn pills already? Has anyone had success with them??
Edit: I also feel like I shouldn’t have to medicate just to function as an adult, but I don’t know what else to do. I exercise 4X a week, I eat healthy, I get plenty of sleep when my anxiety doesn’t keep me up. I’m also diagnosed with depression in addition to autism and anxiety.

Hi all,
I just had my first rituximab (riximyo) infusion on Wednesday and I'm having some weird symptoms, just curious to know if anyone else knows what's normal/expected at this point.
The infusion itself went okay, it took about 5 hours. I did have some mild eathroat itching and palpitations about 2 hours in, but they paused the drip and just ran normal saline for a bit, then I was fine. For pre meds I wad given benadryl (tablet) and solumedrol (IV). I'm not sure of the doses. I was super exhausted the rest of the day which I think was from the pre meds.
Yesterday I didn't have much of an appetite but actually had some energy during the day which was nice, though I started to feel a bit weird in the evening: racing heart, anxiety, and had a hard time sleeping. I thought maybe it was from the solumedrol so I was hoping I'd feel better today. I feel about the same anxiety wise and my heart is still racing a lot. I just feel an overall "heaviness" in my body along with some weakness. I tried to fold some laundry and felt totally gassed after. I checked my BP and it's 143/103 with a 127 HR. I've been resting since then and my HR is 110 now. I haven't eaten much still today so wondering if that could be the reason?
I tried to call my rheum to ask but his office is closed for the weekend. It doesnt feel like an emergency at this point but i am a little concerned since the solumedrol should be well out of my system by now...are these red flag symptoms that would warrant an ED visit? The only other time i get tachy like this is during bad flares. I don't have a fever or rash or anything.
Has anyone experienced similar side effects after rituximab? Thanks in advance!

I started 25 MG at the end of March, there were some side effects, however, I can’t tell how many of them where actually the Zoloft or just me having a panic attack about taking medication. I do believe that some of the effects (trouble sleeping and sensitivity to caffeine) were the meds. However, those passed within the first week.
25MG is not a medicinal dose, per my psych. So after the first two weeks when I began to feel VERY on edge and hyped up, I stopped taking the Zoloft believing it was the meds. Nope, just a prolonged panic attack that did not get better after I stopped taking the medication. So, when I talked to my psych about the experience he encouraged me to resume 25MG for a week, then up to dose to 50MG (where it will actually start doing something). He let me know that I needed to calm down, and that I was counteracting the medication by being SO anxious. Recommended Benadryl, and hydroxyzine. Honesty, just hearing that I wasn’t even on enough of a dose tp cause the level of anxiety I was having and that my brain was psyching me out was enough for me to trust the doc and fully commit to taking the medicinal dose.
I worked my way up to 50MG a week ago and I am very grateful my psych was patient with me and got me to this point. For the first time in my life I feel like I have a handle on a lot of my obsessive/anxiety driven behavior. No chest pain or panic attacks this week, no obsessive weighing myself on the bathroom scale after every meal, and I have not struggled with an urge to drink 🍺 to calm the anxiety. After only a week and just a 50MG dose. I’m so grateful I didn’t let the anxiety win this time 🙂

Hello, first here's some info about myself.
Gender: Male. Age: 23. Weight & Height: 165lbs and 5'11". Medications: Concerta ER 72mg every morning for ADHD. I am in good health (I think) with no serious heath conditions. I am not very fit or physically active, and spend most of my time indoors.
I have taken benadryl before bed regularly for a few years now since 15 years old (while still on amphetamine type meds for ADHD) and never had any issues until about. I used to be able to take three 25mg pills without any problem at night before going to sleep, but 4 years ago the effects of benadryl became more potent for me. This continued to worsen gradually and I had to lower my dose again and again. Now I can't take more that 1.5 pills without having what I think is an adverse reaction (and it's remained as such without worsening or improving since about 6 months ago).
One thing that may possibly be related is that I have a family history of being weak to anethetics (and my grandmother passed away during surgery due to such).
Reaction Symptoms: feel faint, feel weak, have trouble breathing (feels like I'm not getting oxygen), my pulse becomes weak and slow, and my heart beats weakly and feels as if it is becoming slower and slower and will stop if I let myself passout. The intensity of symptoms scale with the dose, starting to occur at doses of 2.5 25mg pills or more.
When this happens, I have to alternate between sitting up and lying down because it feels like my heart will slow to a halt if I remain in one position too long.
I have no idea why this started happening, but I can't really find a reaction like my own to benadryl on google and I would greatly appreciate any input on the matter!

I was on Lexapro for at least 3 years, probably closer to 5. I was on 10 mg. I tapered myself off approximately 2.5mg per 3 to 4 weeks. Once I got to 2.5mg I took it every other day for about 2 weeks. Didn't notice any symptoms. [Very different from Celexa that I was on for 2 yrs and stopped cold turkey due to my doctor not sending my prescription]
One of the reasons I came off the lexapro, and I feel silly for not realizing it as the cause, was trouble swallowing. Idk why I didn't make the connection sooner. I thought maybe I was just eating too fast? But I always needed water when I ate. I had 2 major choking incidents that required intervention and several smaller ones I was able to resolve myself. My partner was convinced I was going to choke to death when I was home alone. It took me just a few months before tapering to figure out that's what was causing it.
Other symptoms that I had been experiencing include emotional blunting, low libido, general numbness. However, it did significantly reduce my depression.
I've been off of it for about 6 months. And, as usual from past experiences, my depression is back. Idk if I even want to try another drug.
I'm curious what other people have tried after lexapro if they found it helped but had unbearable side effects?
Only other one I've used is Paxil and it made me a complete zombie. I couldn't stay awake on it.

My mom is on Haldol to manage her bipolar I, aside from that she’s not on any other psychiatric medication. She suffers from insomnia, and none of the medication her doctor has prescribed has helped her. She mostly sticks to anti-histamines to fall asleep, such as Benadryl.
I was prescribed mirtzapine when I was living at home, however I didn’t really like it so I accumulated a lot of bottles of the medication. I kept them around because I asked my psychiatrist if it was okay to occasionally use them as sleeping pills, on nights I have trouble sleeping and he said yes. It’s low doses, ranging from 15 mgs to 7.5. I guess my mom ran out of her usual sleeping medication and took mirtzapine last night to help her fall asleep, knowing that I use it for sleep.
Well, my mother let me know the next morning and claimed it was a miracle pill. She’s completely sold on it and told me she hasn’t had a restful night like that in years. I’m obviously worried, as it’s antidepressants above everything else. My mother doesn’t really take care of herself(I guess part of her condition/side effect from Haldol), and her psychiatrist doesn’t really take into consideration her other mental issues outside of Bipolar I and psychosis. My mother is frequently depressed and anxious, and there are a lot of things she hides from her doctor.
Part of me would feel guilty heading over today and throwing out all of my old prescriptions, as her insomnia does affect her quality of life and it’s something her doctor doesn’t seem too concern about. However, there’s the other side of the coin where I have no idea what kind of interactions this will have with her bipolar and regular medication. What should I do?
Edit: UPDATE, for anyone else who is wondering or in a similar predicament. My mom had an appointment with her psychiatrist today, in which I told her to inform her doctor about this medication. Well, the doctor said it was an excellent medication, gave her all the warnings that I had also let her know about(better in lower doses for sleeping, can increase appetite) and gave her, her own prescription. Overall, it worked out and I feel a lot better about the situation.

I've been taking ativan on and off for anxiety and panic. I took ativan before I had panic attacks for MRIs so I am comfortable taking it. The issue is I'm scared of taking any other medication. I took a sleeping pill during one of my first panic attacks (the benadryl kind) and it mad it 1000x worse and I've been anxious to take any new medication since. I'm scared I'll have a bad reaction with the klonopin and since it last longer than ativan, I'm going to be suck with the effects much longer. Like I'm scared once I take it I'm going to scare myself until I feel the effect, and have to sit in a state of panic until it kicks in. Like this could definitely just be a bad head space to take it, and I should just wait until I'm not as actively anxious to take it.
Curious if anyone else has switched from ativan to klonopin and can share their experience to calm my nerves.

I was taken off of sertraline (50 mg) after being on it for quite a long time as the side effects (exhaustion/vivid dreams/ excessive day time sleepiness) were making it impossible to do my job. It was unbearable and since being taken off of it, that has subsided (thankfully!)
I was started on Celexa (10mg) and for the last 5 days I have felt more depressed, angry, anxious and foggy than I have ever felt. The headaches have been non-stop, my jaw muscles are sore (clenching?), my chest feels tight, my focus is shot, and my ability to feel anything warm and positive is completely gone. Even hugging my loved ones (which is usually what lifts my spirits and recharges me) feels empty and flat.
They want me to increase it to 20mg but honestly, this drug has felt terrible so far.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this on an SSRI? Not being able to stay awake was ruining my life - 1000%, but this is going to destroy it in a whole different way. And I think the realization that this might be a lose-lose situation feels heartbreaking to me.
For context I have been put on several other anti-depressants (SSRI’s, SNRI’s, Wellbutrin - that one made my anxiety way worse) before and have been unable to find something that works great (without unbearable side effects as my system seems to be really sensitive to them) I’m honestly considering looking into microdosing mushrooms as I heard that can be effective. I’m at such a loss and the doctors at this point don’t have any idea and just keep trying different drug after different drug and the effects of that on my mental health, physical health, life and family are just too much.
Does anyone have any insight or advice? I would so appreciate it 🙏

Hi all, looking for some advice/support. I've been on citalopram 20mg for about 11 years now. When first going on I suffered with really bad anxiety/depressive side effects, but these passed after a few months. I would get the occasional bad week during my time on the medication, where the start up symptoms would come back briefly, but other than that was ok on them.
In 2019 I tried coming off the medication for the first time. The advice from my doctor was go down to 10mg for a month, then one every other day for a month. Surprise surprise, as a lot of people have experienced, there were horrible withdrawal symptoms - tinnitus, vertigo, and intense panic and anxiety. After a week or so of being off them I had to reinstate. Once again I had the awful start up symptoms, horrendous anxiety, agitation and very dark thoughts.
It was after this episode that I discovered the surviving antidepressants website and all the information about how these drugs should be tapered. Something none of the doctors I've seen over the years seem to know anything about.
I decided in June 2022 to try again. This time trying a slower taper. I only had access to a pill cutter (doctors couldn't help with any other methods), so reduced by 2.5mg every two months until I reached 10mg in March 2023. I paused here as each reduction got increasingly tougher, and thought the next drop might be too much. I started getting some physical symptoms in November of heart palpitations etc, putting it down to other things, then in December the anxiety/panic/depression returned in full force. I was in a panic and on my doctor's advice reinstated my citalopram back up to 20mg.
The side effects were just as awful as the first two times, but this time they seemed to go on and on. It took about 3 months before I started getting some relief from the intense anxiety, but I would have a brief period of things feeling like they were getting better, only for it to all come back. Reading on other forums, I guess this is the wave/window experience. I'm now 5 months in and experiencing another wave. After researching more about the symptoms, I believe the intense anxiety/agitation is more likely to be akathisia - my doctor wanted me to increase my dose from 20mg to 40mg which I was very resistant to (all the advice said this could make the agitation worse), so I believe I did the right thing here.
I guess I'm just looking to see if others have experienced anything familiar - what did you do/have you done? Is there anything that has helped you get through it?
I'm on propranolol but that doesn't seem to help much. I have some diazepam prescribed but don't generally take it for fear of becoming dependant (the few times I have taken it it didn't really touch the sides). I see a kinesiologist who had recommended supplements - b6, vitamin E (she believes my levels of the hormone prolactin are unusually high, something I read about on an akathisia page somewhere, so not sure if balancing this could help), amongst others like lions mane and reishi.
I also read that the antihistamine diphenhydramine (Nytol here in the UK, Benadryl in the US) can provide relief from akathisia - I tried some of this last week which gave me a brilliant day, felt back to my old self, only for things to go downhill again. It feels like it takes the edge off, but that is it.
Sorry for the long post, just desperate for some help and for some light at the end of the tunnel. This has been a particularly bad few days again, and my thoughts are getting increasingly darker.

Hi all! My husband and I are taking our little girl Mitzi in cabin on a flight tomorrow. She is a completely healthy 13 month old Shih Tzu. Well, she is crate trained, she doesn’t love her small travel, crate, and in the interest of causing her the least amount of distress. I was hoping to give her a little something to sedate her. I have leftover gabapentin from her spay in the form of 100 mg capsules which she tolerated well but with minimal sedative effects. Is it safe to increase the dose, and if so, by how much or am I better suited using something else like Benadryl and if so, what dose? I do anesthesia for humans but am out of my league with pets and her regular vet is closed for the night.

So I have HS and Crohn’s and doctors are trying to work together for the most effective treatment across the board. I had great success with Humira for 5 years til it just stopped working and Remicade had good results but I’ve had two reactions now to the infusions (even with steroid and Benadryl cover) so I fear that’s it for Remicade.
Anyone with any HS experience they are will to share on either Stelara or Skyrizi please? I know neither is licensed for it in my country and the consultants say there’s not much in the way of formal research so I’d be grateful for any input from anyone who’s tried either, thanks.

Hey all. Started out on 10mg 3 months ago, and had about 2 weeks of side effects before it got easier. I am preparing to go up to 20mg as it seems that after 3 months the 10mg has plateaued for me. My anxiety is controlled and I am less depressed but my long covid fatigue is slowly creeping back (Celexa stopped it) and I am beginning to feel crabby , short tempered and low on patience like I used to be, pre Celexa. For those of you who have gone up in dosage, did you experience side effects all over again? My doctor seems to think it isn’t likely to happen since it’s already in my system.

Yesterday was my first day of treatment. Started out with problems with the port, then started having heart palpitations.got that fixed. 3 hours into a 6 hour session, I got body aches, itchy tongue, throat and mouth. I had a fever and felt real cold. My BP was high and my resting heart rate was 138. So we stopped the treatment. The symptoms went away immediately. I was given more Benadryl and Ativan. And then they slowed down the treatment. Went well for the rest of the day.
I’ve had no side effects other than feeling tired but not so tired I can’t do anything. I am still bracing myself for what’s to come. I hope it’s working.
