AITAH For breaking my Number 1 sex rule with a handicapped guy?

Obviously throwaway, I don’t need anyone here seeing my regular account. Also I’m in the US and English is my first language, any discrepancies are because I suck at typing on my phone.
So TL/DR for the “give me the bare bones, I don’t have all day to read on the shitter” crew: My #1 sex rule since high school has been no sex before the third date. I recently broke that rule with a handicapped guy, and now my childhood best friend is pissed and grossed out because she thinks I have some weird kind of fetish.
Context/full story: I’m a 28f. My childhood best friend we’ll call Jess is also 28f. To put it simply, I don’t think I’m any kind of prude, I just don’t really feel comfortable with casual sex, never have. My best friend knows this and has teased me about it lightly in the past. She’s been in a long term relationship for the last 3 years, I’ve mostly been single while working on my degree and starting my career. Jess lives in another state with her boyfriend, so we don’t hang out much anymore.
So about a month ago I had a first date with a guy I’d been talking to for a bit, thought it was going places, but he gave a WEIRD vibe on the date and I cut and ran early. On my way home I stopped at a local pub, figured I’d have a drink to unwind and people watch till it wore off. (Tipsy driving is still drunk driving IMO.) I get there and it’s pretty packed, Friday night and all, and there was no seating room at the bar. Took my drink and looked around, most of the “restaurant” side of the pub was someone’s birthday party, but there was a small table with a seat open off to the side, with a guy reading a book there. So I say eff it, I’m a social person and what’s the worst thing that happens, he says no? So I ask if I can sit there for a bit, I promise we don’t have to talk or anything.
At this point I feel like I’ve fucked up because this guy up close is the hottest man I have ever seen. But he just smiled at me and gave an enthusiastic “Sure!” A few minutes later of me sipping in silence and he says “I don’t mind talking, if you want to.” (Yeah I want to are you kidding me right now?) We talk for a bit and it turns out Mike (fake name) is 29, just finished his master’s degree in some kind of computer learning field (“I program computers to program computers”) and he’s living on his own for the first time. He apparently stops by the pub after work because he’s right around the corner, and he’s not used to the silence yet after living so long with a half dozen siblings.
We talked for a good two hours, about everything from dating (which he said he’s basically given up on) to hobbies and tastes, and we have a near total eclipse of a venn diagram on this stuff. I eventually sort of blurted out that I don’t know why he’d give up on dating, this is the closest thing I’ve had to a good date in forever. (Shooting my shot obliquely here lol.) He gets kind of an odd look on his face and says “Tell you what, I have to go to the bathroom, but when I come back I’ll ask you out for real.” Weird, but okay?
Then it all clicks, because he doesn’t get up to walk away, he just rolls. In his wheelchair. And I’m thinking “oh my God he wanted to give me a chance to back out of this without making it awkward how cute can this guy BE.” He grinned like crazy when he got back and saw I was still there, and I basically tripped over myself saying something to the effect of “So I’m free all weekend, what did you have in mind?”
Another hour later, we’ve got plans for Saturday, and he told me he has a neuromuscular disorder I can’t remember the name of (my degree isn’t in STEM lol) so his legs work, but the signals from his brain get misinterpreted so he doesn’t have the balance or coordination for walking or standing. The pub starts switching over to the youngerowdier crowd and he asks if I’d like to go back to his place for coffee to continue our conversation.
As you have probably long since realized, I did not get any coffee or conversation till the next morning and I have ZERO regrets. We’ve been dating since and I know it’s still early but I really feel like this might be the one.
Onward to yesterday afternoon, my friend Jess (remember Jess?) is in town, and we go out for coffee to catch up on things. I’m gushing about Mike, but when I get to how we met she just sort of got weird and edgy. I don’t remember any exact words but she essentially said that I must have a fetish for the handicapped since I broke my #1 rule and it’s the best physical relationship I’ve ever been in. Like it’s good for me because he uses a wheelchair, not because the guy puts in effort in bed??? She said I’ve “changed” as a person and left without even saying goodbye. 15 years of friendship and I’ve never seen her like that.
So here I am, asking the most objective people online (haha) if I’m an asshole or weird for being super attracted to a guy who uses a wheelchair and basically putting out immediately.

Firstly, you are allowed to change the rules that you made for yourself. Secondly, I do not get from anything you wrote that you have a “fetish” for the handicapped. Her comments are weird.
Sounds like you need to keep Mike and drop Jess. Good friends will be happy for you, and from what I can gather, that ain’t her.

dubh_righ
She's got a weird fetish - for super hot guys who are kind, and well spoken, and fuck like a hero. What a weirdo. (sarcasm, in case it's not obvious)
OOP: Okay, yeah this made me laugh for real. Seriously, what a weeeeird fetish I have!

brelywi
Hey that’s my fetish too! Here I was thinking I was the only one.

ShottsSeastone
oh fuck that friend. i read this whole thing.
OOP: That shit floored me. He's so considerate in so many ways. His stories about his sibs are also hilarious, I can't wait to meet them. We're trying not to rush things just because it all seems so great, but they have a BBQ in May that he'd like me to come to and I am so there. He was raised around a lot of love and it shows.

Update - 2 days later

My first ever update! Yay! Uh, so if you were hoping for some terrible drama, I hate to break it to you that I don’t roll like that. No pun intended. So I do have an update on Jess and shit finally makes perfect sense. And I have a slightly NSFW but funny story about Mike, because this guy is just the best, y’all.
Okay, so first, I finally messaged Jess yesterday and said basically “I’m still hurt by what you said, but after 15 years of friendship I’d never forgive musif I didn’t at least ask why you snapped at me like that.” She replied immediately, “I’m so fucking sorry, I didn’t mean any of that, can we have a do over on lunch?” So I agreed cautiously and took a half day to meet with her today.
Turns out that those of you who said she was jealous, and that she might have something else going on, and especially the person who said something might be going on in HER relationship….. gold stars. She’s in town because she’s job hunting, because she’s moving back in with her parents for a while since her relationship ended. Apparently they have been having a ton of small problems adding up, but the biggest one? Sex. The guy she’s been with was apparently never great but it’s gotten to the point where he makes no effort at all for her to enjoy herself and then gets pissed when she isn’t in the mood.
She tried talking with him about it, making suggestions but he told her recently that it’s “emasculating” being given sex advice by a woman. The straw that broke the metaphorical camel’s back, however, was that her boyfriend has always had a thing for Asian women. She’s caucasian, but she does have long black hair. After weeks of fighting over their sex life, he suggested that they spice things up….by her dressing in a kimono and pretending to be Asian. She lost it on him and is absolutely disgusted by the racist fetishism and ended it right then.
So she had allllll of this bottled up and was hoping to talk to me and finally be able to put it down….. and I missed every hint that she had something big to discuss because I was gushing about Mike. So to her it felt like I was just twisting the knife by bragging about how great our sex was. She snapped, and somewhere between what I was saying and what she wanted to talk about some wires got crossed and she said something incredibly dumb.
She left without saying goodbye because she was mortified and ashamed as well as irrationally mad at me. Something to know about Jess, she’s an awful liar and she and I were the co-founders of our high school’s “foot-in-mouth” society, so I do believe her. I told her I forgive her and I’m sorry I didn’t realize she wanted to talk about something bothering her, and she said I was too stupidly nice and have nothing to apologize for, so I think we’ll be okay. For the time being I’m not ready for her and Mike to meet, because I don’t want to make things feel worse, and she agrees. But she’s really really happy for me. Hopefully this is just a funny story we can look back on someday.
So, on to how Mike almost killed me, lol. Last night we were talking about the reddit post and he gets this funny expression that I’m starting to recognize. And he goes “How do we know you don’t have a fetish if we haven’t at least tried it in the chair?” And I’m like “are you serious lol”. He said he’s never attempted it, because (cue tears) he’s never felt so comfortable with a partner before. Well.
His chair has what is essentially like a parking break thing. Or it should, it’s unfortunately broken and apparently getting them fixed is an expensive pain in the ass. He doesn’t use it that often so he hasn’t made it a priority. And there’s this thing called Newton’s third law, you know how every action has an equal and opposite reaction? As it happens, when you’re trying to, ah, get the motion of the ocean going, in a chair with wheels that aren’t locked, there’s a sort of counter motion that starts and fucks it all up. So we were going nowhere fast except for inching along the floor in his bedroom. And laughing at the silliness, which isn’t helping. Eventually he just stops and says “Maybe we can get some of those wooden block things they use to keep little planes from rolling away, like in Indiana Jones you know?”
I absolutely lost it. Like laughing so hard I’m in tears, he’s giggling half at the situation and half at my reaction, and everything just keeps setting me off again. FINALLY I get it under control, doing some deep breathing exercises and shit, and I look at him again. And he pulls the straightest face he can, and says, for the love of god, “Golly. This sure is uncomfortable.” Folks if I had asthma I would have fucking died right there. I laughed so hard I think I pulled a rib. Like wheezing and not even laughing anymore so much as weeping and making this awful “heeeeee” noise when I could catch my breath. While he’s laughing and rubbing my back and saying he’s sorry, he couldn’t resist.
So yeah, confirmed, no fetish here, and this magnificent bastard’s comedic timing might actually kill me.
I doubt I’ll update again, because there’s really nothing I can see needing to share given everything sort of worked out. And in the end, the real assholes were the….friends we made along the way? Idk. Thanks for all the lovely comments on my last post and for coming along with me on this absurd but brief drama in my life, lol.

Obviously, Jess needs to have a twin with a mother-in-law invade her home with ummm....dog poo...and somehow there's a tree dropping leaves and and a 7 year old brat threw an ummm...apple? And then the cops came and everyone clapps!
OOP: And everyone's phones blow up! Genius, I'll finally go viral and get all those internet dollars I assume people are raking in, LOL
I probably will post an update on this account, but I don't necessarily want to bog down AITAH with my silly shit. I'm so excited and nervous. It's apparently a Mother's Day BBQ! which I didn't know because my parents and I are estranged and I never even seriously thought about having kids before meeting Mike. But apparently it's a lot of people and a lot of food and apparently everyone knows he's bringing me. Also, can I just say FUCK YES about his mom? They apparently have a huge one floor rancher and she just assumed we'd be sleeping together in his old room. Like none of that weird "you aren't married so you get separate rooms" shit. I already adore them and we haven't even met yet.

Forward-Two3846
I think Mike updates are essential to AITAH 😆. I am so excited for you and I hope you have the time of your life.
OOP: Oh there is one coming. Oh my God his family, lol. I am exhausted already and it's only 1 here, and we have another day of this ahead! They are amazing and he is glowing like a fireball, the side of him when he's with family is so bright I need sunglasses to look at him.

Update - 1 month later

Hello again! I was going to post this on my own page but a few people mentioned that they think it’s nice to read on AITAH, so fuck it, here’s the “met Mikes family” update. And it's a doozy, or at least felt like it at the time for a girl who grew up with a small, dysfunctional family.
So first up, you know what people (at least me) don’t think about when dating a guy who’s always sitting? Height. I know he’s taller than me because we cuddle a lot, and he’s taller sitting on the couch, but I didn’t reeeeeeally get it. So we drive up Friday night after work (actually south and west, lol, but to my brain it’s always up) in his vehicle, which is modified to be driven entirely using his hands. Neat, right? He’s a really good driver too. One more green flag. We get to the house, and it’s…. It’s huge you guys, LOL like not a mansion, just kind of a sprawling one floor rancher. Real estate was wild back in the day.
Anyway we get out, and I meet his mom. I’d like to point out I am no slouch, I’m 5’-friggin-7. His mom is TOWERING over me. But she was the nicest lady ever. We go inside and I meet his dad (who funny enough is apparently the only short one in this family) and his youngest sister, who is living there with his one year old niece. She gets up to hug me and SHE IS ALSO REALLY TALL. It’s already a bit late then, so we eat and head to bed, I get to see his cute as shit room from when he was a teenager, and I casually ask “hey, so uh, I don’t know how this works and stuff, but how tall are you?” and Mike is all “I dunno, like a bit over 6’4? Been a while since I checked.” A BIT OVER 6’4. “So, is everyone in your family tall?” “…..kinda?”
We met the Nordic Basketball team he calls a family properly the next day. (Actually they’re Irish, but they’re blond and tall so it conveys the idea better.) The ONLY one of reasonable height, and still taller than me, was his oldest sister, lol.
They are also LOUD. Like not really shouting or anything usually, just, PRESENT. Mike is a lot different around them, but in the cutest way, like he just beams all the time and you can see how happy he is to be home. One of his brothers put him in a headlock and gave him a dang NOOGIE as a greeting, and got elbowed in the side for it, and all of them laughing. And his mom smacked one of his brothers with a rolled up magazine for putting his feet on the table. More laughing. Just… intimidating but in the happiest way imaginable. I’ll admit I was a little shut down for a bit, but Mike kept checking in with me to make sure I was okay, and they were all really nice, so I got into the spirit after a bit.
I mentioned this in another comment, but Mike has a special sports wheelchair he uses for, well, sports. And he and his siblings play basketball. And he is GOOD. Apart from just having a hell of an arm, he’s quick as hell. And this magnificent bastard that I love will absolutely, purposefully, GLEEFULLY run someone’s toes over. He AIMS for it. They all have this yank-back-the-foot maneuver that’s hysterical to watch.
So it was this crazy day of loud people playing and having a blast, nieces and nephews running around, and just noise. My ears are still ringing. The food was catered in advance because his mom “had seven babies, all I make on mother’s day is margaritas.” They also have a pool, it’s a bit chilly still but the pool is HEATED so we actually all got to swim, which was a lot of fun because I got to show off that I too am athletic…. I can do a backwards somersault off a diving board! Yeah. I’m a real catch lol. They at least pretended to be impressed.
We all stayed up late drinking and bitching that it was too overcast to see the aurora (boo) and I had the worst hangover I’ve had in a while on Sunday. We slept in a bit late, and then joined Mike’s family for the BBQ part of the BBQ weekend. His dad can GRILL, people. And he’s fast, food coming off the grill at lightning speed. I asked Mike about it and he laughed and said “there was seven of us to feed. Ever see a nest of baby birds? He had practice.” Which, fair enough.
I don’t have much experience with babies, but I got to hold his youngest niece (the one living at home with his sis until her husband gets back from deployment) and we had a light talk about kids in the future. I told him that I never put much thought into it but if they were going to grow up in a happy home like his and not how I grew up, I’m pretty sure I’d be open to having them with him someday. But later. I need him all to myself for a while first. He seemed really really happy about that, which makes ME feel all goofy and happy. I’m sappy.
We had to drive home Sunday night, but before we went his mom hugged me and said she’s NEVER seen her son like this, and thanked me for taking good care of her baby. And asked if we’d be back for the 4th of July or if we were doing something with my family. And I tried to be all “haaaa no we’ll be here if you don’t mind, I don’t see them much” and I think she caught on that there’s more to the story so she just hugged the shit out of me (vikings, all of them I swear) and told me she can’t wait to see me again.
My ears are still ringing from all the noise and chaos, but it was an absolute blast and I can’t wait to see them again in July. Also, pretty much sure Mike is the man I’m going to marry. I literally can’t think of a single reason why I would ever let him get away.
Anyway thanks for reading, hope you all had a lovely weekend, and those of you who got to see the aurora I’m happy for you but you suck, lol.

NTA. sounds like you have found a happy family to join. Good for you and good for Mike.
OOP: It's still pretty surreal. The other in laws that were there were all like that smiling hanging guy meme, "First time?" It was a great weekend.

This story is so heart warming it belongs on BestofRedditorUpdates.
Congratulations, at some parts I felt like I was reading about the Roarke Family's dynamics in one of Nora Robert's JD Robb's Eve Dallas Novels, the whole Irish family vibes were just there. So lovely.
OOP: Ahahaha I don't think it's interesting enough for that, but I am glad people are enjoying it.

I am not the OOP. Please do not harass the OOP. Please remember the No Brigading Rule and to be civil in the comments

2024.05.17 10:30 Present_Hippo911 Got a Black Burberry Kensington Long Trench. How to style without looking 2edgy4me?

I just got in the Kensington Trench Long in Black: https://us.burberry.com/the-long-kensington-heritage-trench-coat-p80458601
I’m 6’1” and it hits my upper calf, a few inches below the knee.
I’m trying to figure out how to best style it without looking like an early 2000s edgy try hard. I absolutely love the cut and shape of the jacket and my fiancée is a huge fan of the “villain vibe” (her words, not mine) that it gives off. Tried on the jacket in Chicago last fall, really didn’t like the honey or navy colours much. Loved the black. I know black is a bit limiting and I’m ok with that. I’m 28 so firmly outside of the dorky trench coat kid age. I’ve really started to love longer outerwear in the past several years. I have a couple of overcoats, car coats (Brooks mostly) and Spier and Mackay’s Ulster coat. This is likely to be the last outerwear purchase I’ll make for the next while.
My first idea was some chunky knits and jeans. I have some really lovely ones from Brooks. I have their fisherman sweater in navy, shawl neck chunky knit in grey, a quilted wool quarter zip in camel, and a handful of their solid Merino wool sweaters. (RIP BB Canada, you will be missed). I’m considering getting the Chris Evans/Hugh Ransom Aran Fisherman sweater in oatmeal.
How else could I style it? Any pointers? I have a good selection of boots. Black combat, brown cap toes, black hiking, black Chelsea. I have a couple pairs of dark brown penny loafers. Might go well but I’m not sure what pairings to go with here.
What pants would go well with this? I don’t have any black jeans but I’m open to them. Used to wear them a couple years back.

2024.05.13 21:07 thisistinsleymusic The search for unicorn marathon shorts - and a winning pair!

I've been searching for the perfect shorts for my first marathon and it's been a journey, so I thought I'd share my notes with you all. What I wanted: a pair of high-waisted compression shorts that wouldn't cause chafing, legs that wouldn't ride up/would stay put, had pockets for my phone/fuel, and was flattering/didn't cause my thighs to poke out at the bottom of the leg seams. This has been surprisingly very hard to find!!
I was lurking on here and on TikTok trying to research the best and most-recommended, so here's what I tried:
TLDR: The FlipBelt women's compression shorts are a really, really nice pair of shorts!

40 of the Best 2-Player Board Games of All Time
https://preview.redd.it/azn3l96gt7zc1.jpg?width=1233&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6768be73b3d373243b903e058a1bb29049eec994
See the original post here.
2-player board gaming constitutes a huge part of my hobbyist career, and it is obvious why. Many games are designed exclusively for 2-players, and many more work well at that count. Spanning back millennia with the likes of Chess, Checkers, and Go, 2-player-only games have served as a cornerstone of this hobby. And although I’ve explored and enjoyed this genre for a long time, Bitewing Games has never put out a 2-player-only game… until now.
After two and a half years of hunting, planning, and development, we’re finally ready to unveil our line of two-player-only games. But before we get to that, in celebration of this milestone I’d like to highlight and update my list of the best 2-player board games of all time. I shared my original Top 10 list a whopping 4 years ago, back when Bitewing Games was nothing more than a blog. It’s an old list, but still a pretty solid one. Yet I’ve since had many more encounters with incredible games. So many, in fact, that limiting my list to only 10 feels like a bit of a crime against the genre.
Rather than try to arbitrarily rank one title just barely above another, I’m going to dump my entire list of recommendations on you. I’ll even narrow them down into themed categories so it is easier for you to find your type of 2-player game. Let’s explore the best 2-player games I’ve ever played!

Spicy Brutality

https://preview.redd.it/tzvv643yv7zc1.jpg?width=3046&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cab8cb48199eed3f04dcd944585d878784f591d9
These are the meanest games on my list. Yet spicy games are also some of the most exciting. Proceed with caution, all ye who enter.
  • Undaunted Series — If you’re looking for a war-game experience that is approachable, quick, and streamlined, then Undaunted is the best in the business. There are several unique experiences in this ongoing series of standalone games. Across the games that I’ve tried, I now have roughly 30 plays. We’ve really enjoyed how Undaunted merges smooth deck building with tense tactical skirmishes across many different scenarios.
  • Radlands — If you’ve ever wished you could try Magic: The Gathering or similar dueling card games but been scared off by the steep barriers to entry, then Radlands might be the answer. Everything is contained in a single small box where players draw from the same deck to play out and command a team of post-apocalyptic fighters. The goal is to take out the enemy’s camps first, and you’ll have plenty of tools at your disposal. Despite the aggressive gameplay, the rules are very easy to get into, making this a breeze to teach and play.
  • Marabunta — One of the newest 2-player designs from the legendary Reiner Knizia is a game of ants, dice, and dry erase markers. Although this one has been billed as a roll and write, it plays nothing like the genre. You feel that the most in how agonizing and cutthroat this game is. Marabunta combines painful “I split, you choose” decisions with cold-blooded area majorities on a shared board. Rarely has a game hurt so good to play.
  • Caesar!: Seize Rome in 20 Minutes! — Designer Paolo Mori has proven himself to be a reliable 2-player game designer across several titles which are on this list, but the first one we’ll cover is Caesar. Don’t be fooled by the cheap production, Caesar is a firecracker of a game. You and your opponent take turns deploying units onto the map, covering the spots that border two different regions. Once a region is completely surrounding by tokens, the player with the most strength wins the region. Yet whoever closes the region (covers the final border space) claims a bonus, so sometimes you even help your rival to finish taking over a battleground. That makes this sound like a nice game, but there are plenty of opportunities to undermine your opponents plans and abilities.
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation — If you love the idea of Stratego, but perhaps not the execution, then this one is absolutely for you. Reiner Knizia offers his take on Stratego’s experience with a game that is also inspired by the Lord of the Rings trilogy. One player is trying to sneak Frodo all the way to Mordor without him getting captured, and the other player is trying to reclaim the ring or basically take over Middle Earth before the fellowship stops them. Devious bluffing and brutal conflicts abound in this highly revered classic from the Good Doctor Knizia that sadly hasn’t seen a new edition in many years.

Not Too Aggressive

https://preview.redd.it/kpc8ny8zv7zc1.jpg?width=2036&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b48e5678befe9d36ce7cb68224f1be61f8c2b8aa
If the above suggestions seem a little to mean for you or your gaming partner, but you still want a hint of spice in your game, then I highly recommend the following…
  • Lost Cities — This is perhaps Reiner Knizia’s most popular 2-player game ever, and for good reason! Many people have pointed to Lost Cities as the best game to play with your significant other. The decisions you make in this game can still be quite rude, but the key is that your opponent doesn’t know you are being rude. You’ve been holding that green 10 in your hand that they so desperately wanted the entire game… and you never even intended to use it for yourself? That’s Lost Cities for you. The hand management decisions in this game are fantastic. You’ll sweat over which cards to hang on to and which expeditions to commit to.
  • Patchwork — Like Lost Cities, Patchwork is yet another widely recommended 2-player game, and for good reason! It combines the satisfaction of polyomino puzzling with smart economic considerations including time management and a button economy. There is a reason why this one has been endlessly in print for 10 straight years.
  • Jaipur — I don’t think I appreciated Jaipur at first as much as I do now. Admittedly, it presents itself as a generic set collection game of spices and gems and camels. These games are a dime a dozen, right? Yet Jaipur sets itself apart by being so dang perfect and paced. You’ll feel yourself pulled in every direction as you race to meld sets first yet wait to build bigger sets, want to spend your turn doing one thing but feel compelled to do another thing, both curse and covet the camels, and so on.
  • Battle Line / Schotten Totten — It’s hard to mention Knizia’s Lost Cities without also acknowledging Battle Line (aka Schotten Totten). Both of these simple card games are ripe with tough hand management decisions, yet they end up feeling very different on the table. Battle Line is about forming poker-style sets of cards across multiple fields of battle against your opponent. As far as I know, this design kicked off the genre known as “lane battlers,” and it is still one of the very best thanks to its timeless elegance.

Tug of War Trifecta

https://preview.redd.it/yadokauzv7zc1.jpg?width=1650&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=580c598a8f30232065dad443460c84ecf4543cb4
Tug of War is a concept that lends itself nicely to 2-player games — one side pulls against the other. If these back and forth experiences sound appealing to you, then allow me to introduce you to the very best 2-player tug-of-war games.
  • Watergate — Based on the Watergate scandal from American history, this one has been a big hit in the last five years of hobbyist gaming. If you want a taste of Twilight Struggle (a famous but sprawling war game) in a fraction of the time and effort, then Watergate is hands down the best option. Watergate presents a cat and mouse tussle between the corrupt Nixon Administration and the courageous press who are out to expose them. You’ll be competing to drag key evidence onto your end of the tug of war track and throwing down powerful event cards in this slick tactical romp.
  • Royal Visit — While it hasn’t even come close to the popularity and success of Knizia’s other 2-player titles, Royal Visit has proven to be another favorite for my wife and I to get to the table. Royal Visit is the purest Tug of War game of this Trifecta. All you have is 1 track and a hand of cards of four possible suits. On your turn you may only play one suit of card, the suit matches a character on the track, and the more cards you play drags that character closer to your end of the track. It sounds almost too simple to be any good, and by the looks of it some people actually do feel that way, but I find that the functional differences of each character and their cards makes this a surprisingly nuanced game. It’s hidden yet satisfying depth has proven itself to me across our many plays.
  • Biltzkrieg!: World War Two in 20 Minutes — Those of you with a keen eye will notice that this game’s title has a lot in common with Caesar’s full title. That’s because both games are from the same designer and publisher team, and they both share the same idea of putting out a tile that is hidden behind your screen. The difference is that Caesar has a bunch of area majority battles while Blitzkrieg presents a bunch of tug of war tracks. Which is better between the two? That’s difficult to say. Depends on who you ask, really. But I’m more than happy to own and enjoy both. The other notable thing about Blitzkrieg is that it is basically a 2-player version of Paolo Mori’s cult classic game, Dogs of War.

Best Cooperative Games

Well we’ve already covered so many games that let you roll up your sleeves and pummel your opponent (or lightly pinch them, in the less aggressive games). Why not take a break and look at some of the best 2-player cooperative games?
  • Sky Team — If you want the latest and greatest hotness in the 2-player-only genre, then Sky Team should be the first place you look. It’s one that I rated highly on my Top 15 Games of 2023 list, and it is one of my wife’s favorite games in recent years. In this airborne thriller, you and your partner play as pilots of a commercial airplane with a mysterious communication problems. You’ll take turns putting out your hidden dice as you try to land the plane without causing a catastrophe. The big hurdle is that you can’t communicate what dice you have or where you want your copilot to put their dice. Sky Team entices you to come back for many more plays thanks to the various modules and scenarios that mix up the challenge.
  • Sail — Sail is another major hit from 2023 where you are also piloting a ship together… only in this case you are trying to avoid the kraken via the medium of trick taking. This one is gorgeously illustrated by Weberson Santiago (one of my favorite board game artists) and also presents a variety of challenging scenarios featuring unique maps.
  • MicroMacro Series — If you, like me, have a certain fondness or nostalgia for Where’s Waldo books, then MicroMacro should be right up your alley. This series of games takes the experience of Where’s Waldo and turns it into a bunch of murder mystery style cases that you and your partner must solve. The weird thing about this huge city map crammed with thousands of details is that it shows events taking place over time. You can follow a person walking down the street, around the corner, and into a building where they shove a victim out a window to their death. Yes, it is somehow both cute and dark.
  • Pandemic: Iberia — I can’t list the best 2-player cooperative games without mentioning the titanic series, Pandemic. Where there are so many versions of this game at this point, I’ll just list one of our favorites — Pandemic: Iberia. You are still racing to cure diseases and contain outbreaks, but here it takes place in Iberia with a few interesting twists such as building a railroad infrastructure to shuttle you around faster.

Best Positional Abstracts

https://preview.redd.it/8wp7ur61w7zc1.jpg?width=3120&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bb348ea8672ea269ccfab8590231571a4c8625b5
There are so many positional abstracts (like Chess) in this world that it becomes increasingly hard for these mostly themeless games to stand out. Move a piece, capture a piece. Advance, retreat. Strike, counterstrike. May the best mind win. Here are my favorites that I have found.
  • Onitama — Onitama is a dead simple abstract strategy game. To win, either capture your opponent’s leader, or move your leader into their leader’s starting space. Easy as that. The thing that makes this game so neat is that your pawn movement is dictated by whatever two movement cards are sitting in front of you. Any time you use a card, it gets rotated over to your opponent for them to be able to use on a future turn. So you end up dictating the future options of your rival. On top of that, Onitiama (and its expansions) provide a large variety movement cards, meaning that no two games will be alike.
  • Project GIPF Series, Tzaar and Yinsh — Back in middle school (or sometime around then) I went through my Chess phase. Learning, exploring, and obsessing over the game as I played it with family members and on digital adaptations. Well some time after that (maybe in high school), I entered a project GIPF phase. Project GIPF is a newer line of games (relative to Chess, at least) that features zero theme but plenty of strategy. I call it a phase, but I only ever got deep into two games in this series: Tzaar and Yinsh. Tzaar forces you decide whether to make yourself stronger or your opponent weaker as you protect your three types of discs and try to wipe out one type of your opponent’s discs. Yinsh has you leaping your rings over a line of tiles, causing them to flip to the opposing player’s color. Once you have a line of five tiles of your color, you discard one of your rings from the board. The first person to discard three of their rings wins. I’ve enjoyed both of these games for how they twist and contort your brain in challenging new ways. If you have a gaming partner that is willing to take the plunge on these dry yet approachable boxes, then you’ll find plenty of strategic depth at their core.
  • Santorini — This one stands out thanks to its verticality and its huge deck of asymmetric god powers. Players are moving their figures around and building up 3-layered structures. The objective is to position your figure on top of a 3-story building in order to win. But if your opponent is in an adjacent space, then they can stop you from reaching the top by capping the building off with a dome top. Once you have dabbled in the core game, then you can add in god abilities which mix up the challenges and opportunities of each play.
  • Hive — Hive (specifically Hive Pocket) might just be the most travel-friendly board game ever. That’s because this one has no board or cards. It simply uses a handful of chunky plastic tiles… meaning you can play this one on virtually any flat-ish surface (including the sandy beach!). The point of Hive is to surround your opponent’s queen bee with tiles. All of the bug tiles move in unique and interesting ways… Grasshoppers can jump over a line of tiles to the opposite side. Beetles can climb on top of (and trap) other tiles. Ants can move anywhere they want (a very powerful bug). But all of the tiles must stay grouped together in one connected hive, so there are ways to block your opponent from moving certain bugs. Despite its simplicity, I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface of Hive.
  • Chess and Go — It would be downright rude to not include Chess and Go, the two ancient titans of the genre, somewhere on this list. So here they are. Give them a play, scratch them off your bucket list, and who knows, maybe you’ll fall deep into their strategic rabbit holes. You wouldn’t be the first to do so.

Best Euro-Abstracts

https://preview.redd.it/78jd2x62w7zc1.jpg?width=3001&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=25c5aa8144ac4255862235a07a87dd27d4ced6e1
What the heck is a Euro-abstract? Beats me. I just heard somebody use the term once and it sounded fitting. My best guess is that a Euro-abstract is different from a standard abstract in that it generally features more modern design elements like points, theme, abilities and/or a pinch of luck.
  • Great Plains — Speaking of Go, there are many excellent modern games inspired by this old classic. Great Plains is one such design. Players are spreading out their figures into valuable territories, seeking to have majority in these point-scoring territories at the end of the game. I find that two key features make Great Plains so… well, great: (1) Players can earn animal abilities that let them break the normal placement restrictions. (2) The map is randomly generated each game. Great Plains is one of my most recent discoveries, yet I’m already in love with it.
  • Mandala — This one is a brilliant little card game where players are seeking to claim the most valuable cards, but the values of the cards and opportunities to earn them are steered entirely by the players throughout the game. All you do is add cards to a middle market or bid cards to your side to try and claim first dibs at the cards in that market. The entire deck is nothing more than six different colors of cards. Yet the depth that unfolds is sneakily satisfying.
  • Patterns — Patterns is branded as a sequel to Mandala, although they don’t share much beyond the scoring system and creators. Actually, all three of the above games come from the same design duo: Trevor Benjamin and Brett J Gilbert. Considering the fact that these games are all only from the last five years, I’m starting to suspect that Trevor and Brett might be the best abstract game designers currently working in the industry. Patterns is phenomenal (another of my top rated games from 2023) due to its layered decisions of tile placement and claiming.
  • Lacuna — I mentioned it in the past, but last year was a great year for 2-player-only games. Sky Team, Sail, Patterns, and Lacuna were all excellent. Lacuna is a tough to categorize because it is so unique, but I lumped it here due to the end of game flower majorities that happen for scoring. You start by using the cylindrical box like a salt shaker to sprinkle out the flower tokens onto a large cloth mat. Then you take turns positioning your pawns between two matching flowers to claim them both. After all pawns are out, the remaining flowers are claimed by the nearest pawns. So there is a refreshing spatial challenge of positioning your pawns in the best places to claim the most important flowers. For how quick and breezy this one is, it is an easy recommendation.
  • Chartae — Chartae has impressed me in a way that no other 2-player game has. It crams a surprisingly rich filler game into a tiny little box. With only 9 tiles, the game packs a surprising punch. Either add a tile to the map or rotate a tile. The winner is the player who has the largest connected territory once the map is complete. Perhaps this isn’t one that you should go out of your way to acquire and play — the end result would likely feel underwhelming relative to the effort invested. But if you appreciate discovering surprising depth beneath absolute simplicity, then Chartae is a great choice.

Best Campaign/Legacy

https://preview.redd.it/d63rdgs2w7zc1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3c4d62c27f574287b2c37e7c90f6872f6ccbf293
If you’re looking for a multi-session gaming experience with your arch nemesis, there are many options out there. But these are two of the best that we have found:
  • Undaunted: Stalingrad — Undaunted: Stalingrad remains my favorite game in the Undaunted series. That is precisely because it is such a great legacy/campaign experience where your troops and environment change across many scenarios. The decisions you make in one battle will have ripple effects throughout the war.
  • My City (and its spinoffs) — Those who enjoy polyomino games owe it to themselves to try My City. Across 24 episodes of evolving rules and challenges, you’ll agonize of the placement of your building tiles as you try to satisfy the various scoring objectives. My City is also one of the more approachable legacy games in existence, and intentionally so. I’ve found it to be a great game for couples or families who want to knock out a play or more each evening for a few weeks. The spinoff games, My City: Roll & Build and My Island, perhaps don’t reach the same heights as the original experience, but they still offer plenty of fun if you are hungry for more.

Skill-based Thrills

https://preview.redd.it/vvs2qgc3w7zc1.jpg?width=1562&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e177b708129b6525e86d602a40817b04c95d7020
Sometimes it’s nice to let your brain take a break and simply challenge your fingers and hands instead. It’s even more satisfying to see your skills improve with enough practice and experience. Here are two games that emphasize skill and physicality over intelligence and scheming.
  • KLASK — KLASK is like miniature air hockey, but even better than the real thing. Or at least I would argue that because KLASK is so dang funny and enjoyable. Using the magnetic pawns that you control beneath the table, the goal is to knock the ball in your opponent’s goal… or stick two magnetic “biscuits” to their pawn… or hope they accidentally “KLASK” (move their pawn into their own goal). If any of those things happen, then you get a point. KLASK never fails to deliver a bombastic and lively experience. This game belongs in every household.
  • Crokinole — The best thing that Canadians ever gave to the world was the game of Crokinole. That’s no slight against Canada — Crokinole is fantastic. Our Crokinole board hangs on our wall like a family heirloom. Usually people who see it assume it is some kind of dartboard. But the moment I pull it off the wall and dump out the discs, they are hooked. Crokinole is one of my most played games in my entire collection thanks to its broad appeal and supreme satisfaction of flicking and ricocheting discs across a slippery board.

Happy Hobbyist

https://preview.redd.it/ocsfbrt3w7zc1.jpg?width=2900&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=411195c82140dc48356471d48426101921f010db
I don’t often stray into the ultra-heavy gaming territory, which is why most of the games that I play, talk about, and publish are medium weight or lighter. But it seems like the sweet spot for most hobbyist gamers is in that medium weight territory anyway. These are the games that are generally a bit longer to play, require ten or fifteen more minutes to teacher, and combine multiple mechanisms together. Here are my best recommendations for the hobbyist gamer!
  • Innovation This civilization-themed card game may very well be the best of its class for having a streamlined ruleset with massive and chaotic potential, but it is not for everyone. Innovation is less about outwitting your opponent within an open information playing field and more about wacky opportunism. That means you get plenty of moments of surprise attacks, last-minute scrambles, and tactical lunges. It’s a game that keeps you on your toes from start to finish — the more nimble player will win. But it’s only enjoyable if you are willing to let the craziness sweep you away. It’s only worthwhile if you find endless wordy abilities to be exciting rather than exhausting.
  • Splendor Duel — If Splendor is a bit too simple or light for your tastes, then Splendor Duel might be what you are looking for. Here there are a few more considerations to deal with as you claim gems, earn cards, and build your engine. I love how it cranks up the heat by allowing players to pressure each other on multiple possible victory conditions.
  • Match of the Century — This one is Paolo Mori’s take on a lane battler (like Battle Line) and a pseudo-sibling to Watergate. You’ll be reenacting the chess match of the century by playing a game about chess that isn’t actually chess. By committing cards to each lane and utilizing card powers, you’ll determine who comes out on top during each “match” or round. It is a game about making short-term sacrifices for long-term gains. I dig it!
  • Zamek / Carcassonne The Castle — Carcassonne provides a great 2-player experience on its own, but like Pandemic it has seen many spin-offs due to its popularity. One of those spin-off games is a 2-player-only version designed by the one and only Reiner Knizia that introduces some fantastic features to the Carcassonne system. Players are confined to adding tiles within a wall, and the wall itself functions as a score track with bonus corners that encourage you to stop on them exactly. Subtle changes like these make you think all the harder about where you want to place tiles and when you want to score them. It’s easily my favorite way to play Carcassonne. Unfortunatley, this one is very difficult to obtain (unless you track down a used copy or order Zamek from Poland).
  • 7 Wonders Duel — Based on the big box hit, 7 Wonders, 7 Wonders Duel has the honor of being the second highest rated 2-player-only game on BoardGameGeek. Does that mean it is the second best 2-player-only game ever created? That’s for you to decide. All I know is that it is mega popular and mega fun. Players take turns drafting cards from a pyramid display as they build their civilization and wonders. Like Splendor Duel (both co-designed by Bruno Cathala), it allows you to gun for 3 possible victory objectives and pressure your rival in their weakest categories.

Great at 2, and other counts too!

https://preview.redd.it/bjac6vh2g8zc1.jpg?width=1521&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3388248054f92cec1ff067e410abd7e8f21ee70a
  • The Quest for El Dorado — How many racing games do you know that are amazing at 2 players? The Quest for El Dorado is yet another Knizia classic that has sold gangbusters, and for good reason. Through building your deck and playing out cards, you’ll race across the different types of terrain. It works so well at 2-players because each player controls 2 explorers that both must reach the finish line in order to win. With infinite map possibilities and oodles of expansion content, El Dorado has been a blast for us every time it hits the table.
  • A Feast for Odin — These next two games are without a doubt the meatiest on my list. Despite the long playtime (usually 2-3 hours when you include setup and teardown), A Feast for Odin is comfort food gaming. You’re given a big board of spaces that demand to be filled with tiles and a huge sandbox of viking-style options for how to acquire those tiles. Just like any good feast, you’ll come away satisfied.
  • Ark Nova — One of the absolute hottest releases of the past decade is undoubtedly Ark Nova. It features its own style of comfort food entertainment by letting you manage and customize your own zoo across a few hours of heavy gaming. The massive deck of cards features a truly wild variety of animals that you will only scratch the surface of with each play.
  • Crokinole — There’s only one game so good that it deserves to be mentioned twice on the same list. Crokinole, baby! I had to include it here as well just because the 2v2 mode is such a riot.
  • Azul — The modern classic, Azul, is probably at its spiciest at 2-players where the hate drafting is most direct. But that’s why I love playing it at 2. Azul brings the goods with a clever, family-weight experience ripe with clackety colorful tiles.
This concludes my list featuring 40 of the best 2-player games I’ve ever played. These titles and my experiences playing them with another person have me into the gamer and publisher that I am today. Today I am thrilled to pay tribute to this genre and continue its legacy with the reveal of Bitewing Games’ new line of 2-player-only games: the Mythos Collection — 2-player games of strategy and mythology. Our goal for this line of games is to recruit the best 2-player game creators in the industry and assemble the most renowned line of 2-player games the world has ever seen. The Mythos Collection is made by and of legends.
To kick off this new line of games, there is no designer we trust more than the world-renowned Reiner Knizia (as the prophesy foretold, this is the year of the Knizia after all). I’m pleased to unveil his newest 2-player games: Iliad and Ichor.

2024.04.27 02:26 mingzhouren Book Review: Back Mechanic

I just read Back Mechanic by Stuart McGill and want to share a book review. The book is written for the lay, non-medical, non-powerlifting population. Like a car manual, it doesn't give you an individualized treatment plan for your back pain, but it lays out the main concepts and gives you everything you need to know to solve or reduce your individual problems.

Main Ideas

The book can be summarized in 3 ideas.
  1. Asses your own back pain
  2. Avoid painful movements and bad posture
  3. Strengthen the core muscles so that you can protect and stabilize your spine

Spine and Back anatomy

The book starts by explaining the basics of anatomy and the most common causes of back pain. It discusses:

The Self Examination

This is the most valuable part of the book (Chapter 6). It has a bunch of tests to see what types of movement cause pain. Does it hurt when you put your spine into flexion? What about extension? What if you brace your spine? Does spine compression hurt (i.e. putting weight on your spine)? Does spine traction hurt (i.e. decompressing the spine like hanging from a bar)? What about twisting? There is a detailed assessment that will help you pinpoint what movements and environments trigger pain.

Recovery

There is such a wealth of info in the later chapters but the main points of recovery can be summarized as

Exercises

Big 3 for Back
Big 3 for hips
My experience with the Big 3:
The curl up is super hard for me. I’m usually trembling throughout. Side plank is pretty familiar. Bird Dog is deceptive. I thought it was easy at first but I just wasn’t bracing right. It gets a lot harder when you send your weight 50%/50% to your support hand and support knee rather than keeping most of the weight on your knee. It also is harder if you keep your shins parallel to your body instead of caving them in. There are lots of tips in the book and these two videos are helpful.
SquatU
Precision Movement

Conclusion

Other than starting strength, this is the most helpful book I have read related to fitness. I think that every powerlifter should read this book after finishing the beginner 5x5 add 5 lbs every session phase. That would help prevent chronic back pain from coming to an acute injury and avoid stupid spine aggravations like stretching your hamstrings to prevent flexion pain. Has anyone read McGills other book Ultimate Back Fitness and Performance? Can you explain the main concepts and say if it is worth a read?

2024.04.25 10:44 teabagandwarmwater How the sick/injured/ can make wudhu and pray

By Asma bint Shameem
Prayer is obligatory under all circumstances even if we’re sick or injured.
🍃 Imraan ibn Husayn radhi Allaahu anhu said:
“I had haemorrhoids, so I asked the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam and he said: “Pray standing, and if you cannot, then (pray) sitting, and if you cannot then (pray) on your side.” (al-Bukhaari 1066)
So prayer is obligatory no matter what.
🔺 Making Wudhu
If someone is sick or injured and it’s difficult for them to make wudhu by themselves, they can make wudhu with the help of someone who can either take them to the sink or they can bring water in a pot for them to make wudhu, and that would be best. That’s because the default rule is that wudhu must be made with water if that’s possible.
But if water is harmful for them or it’s too difficult for them to make wudhu with water, they can perform tayammum. But that’s ONLY if water is harmful for them or they cannot make wudhu.
And if they’re too sick to perform tayammum themselves, someone can help them do that.
🍃The scholars of the Standing Committee said:
“ If it is too difficult for the sick person to do wudhu' or tayammum himself, someone else should do wudhu' or tayammum for him, and that is acceptable.”
🔺 The sick person can pray without wudhu or any purification if necessary
The prayer is SO important, that if a person is so sick that he cannot make wudhu OR tayammum and there’s no way to purify himself, he can even pray WITHOUT purification. But he MUST pray.
🍃 Shaykh Fawzaan said:
“Some of the unlearned people undergo surgery in the hospital. They are confined to the hospital bed and unable to leave the bed, or they are unable to change their clothes which are soiled with impurities. Perhaps they do not have any dust by which they can perform dry ablution, or they do not have anyone to bring it to them. Consequently, they delay their prayers past the stated fixed times. They say, ‘I will pray them later when the excuse is gone’.
This is a huge mistake, a major offense and neglect of the prayer.
He falls in this, due to ignorance and not asking the question.
It is obligatory upon the person in this situation to pray his prayers during the proper prayer times. He prays each prayer during its proper time, according to his condition. His prayer will suffice him in this condition even if he prays without tayammum or prays with impurities on his clothes, if this is the best he can do. Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala said:
“So fear Allaah as much as you are able.” (Surah At-Taghābun 64:16)
Even if he prays in other than the direction of the Qiblah, if he is not able to face the Qiblah then his prayer is correct.”
🔺 Another thing to ease the situation of the sick is that they can put on SOCKS after making wudhu and them just wipe over them for the next 24 hours. That will make it more convenient for them and would ease their situation.
Wiping over the socks is confirmed and proven from the action of the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam and the Sahaabah.
For example:
🍃 When al-Mugheerah ibn Shu’bah radhi Allaahu anhu wanted to take off the Prophet’s khuffayn in order to wash his feet, the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said to him: “Leave them, for I put them on pure,” so he wiped over them.” (al-Bukhaari, 206; Muslim, 274)
🍃 And Ali ibn Abi Taalib radhi Allaahu anhu said:
“The Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam stated one day and one night for the one who is not traveling, and three days and three nights for the one who is traveling, i.e., for wiping over the khufoof.” (Saheeh Muslim)
Keep in mind that the socks don’t have to be of leather only. Rather, they can be of any material as long as they are thick and cover the entire foot up to the ankles.
🍃 Ibn Hazm said:
“Wiping over anything that is worn on the feet – of things that are permitted to be worn and which come up above the ankles – is Sunnah, whether they are slippers (khuffayn) made of leather or felt or wood, or socks made of linen, wool, cotton, camel hair or goat hair, whether leather is worn over them or not, or whether they are overshoes or slippers worn over slippers or socks worn over socks.” (Al-Muhalla, 1/321)
🔺If they have a splint, cast or bandage of some sort on their limbs or any of the body parts that need to be washed during wudhu, the correct way to make wudhu is to wash the REST of the parts like you would do for wudhu, and WIPE over the part that’s in a cast/splint’ or covered with a bandage.
🍃 Al-Bayhaqi said:
“Ibn ‘Umar radhi Allaahu anhu did wudhu when his hand was bandaged, and he wiped over it and over the dressing, and he washed everything else.” (Al-Majmoo’, 2/368)
🍃 Someone asked Shaikh Ibn Uthaymeen about how to do wudhu with a bandage (plastecast) on his hand.
He said:
“When you do wudhu, wash the part of the hand where there is no bandage, and for the part where the bandage is, it will be sufficient for you to wipe over the outside of it by wetting your hand with water and moving it over the outside of the bandage. This will suffice for you instead of washing what is beneath it for as long as it needs to stay, even if that is for many prayer times or for several days.”
And if the plaster or bandage is over the arm or leg but the fingers or toes are uncovered, then you must WASH the fingers/toes.
🍃 Shaikh Ibn Uthaymeen said:
“Sometimes the cast covers the palm and the fingers are not covered. In that case, it is obligatory to wash the fingers and the cast may be wiped over. Similarly, in the case of [a cast on] the leg, the toes may be not covered, so they must be washed and the cast must be wiped over.” [al-Liqaa’ ash-Shahri (61/27)]
🔺Offering Prayers
  1. If someone who’s sick can stand and offer their prayers, that would be best. But if they can’t do that, then they should pray sitting. And if they can’t do that, then they should pray lying down. And if they can’t even do that, then they should pray “however” it is easy for them.
🍃 Proof:
The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam told a sahaabi who couldn’t pray standing:
“Pray standing; if you cannot, then sitting; and if you cannot then lying on your side.” (al-Bukhaari)
🔺HOW to pray sitting❓ If a person cannot perform rukoo and sujood the normal way and has to offer the prayer sitting, they can sit on the floor and offer the prayers. And if they can’t sit on the floor, they can sit on a chair. They should just bend themselves forward a little bit for the rukoo and a bend a little deeper for sujood.
There’s NO need to put a table in front to put the head on it.
Nor is there a need to put the arms forward in midair to make sujood in between the hands.
Just put your hands on your knees and lean forward for the rukoo and lean some more for the sujood.
📌 Proof:
🍃 Once the Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam visited a sick person and saw him praying (leaning) on a pillow, so he took it and cast it aside. So the man took a stick to pray (leaning) on it, but he took it and cast it aside and said:
“Pray on the ground if you can, but otherwise make movements with your head, making your sujood lower than your rukoo.” (at-Tabaraanee, Bazzaar, and others. Saheeh by shaikh al-Albaani In Silsilah al-Ahaadeeth.)
🍃Shaykh Saalih al-Fowzaan said:
“The Prayer is the second pillar of Islaam. It is the foundational support-post of Islaam, and it is the first of all deeds a person will be held to account for on the Day of Judgment. If it is accepted [by Allaah], the rest of his deeds will be accepted. If it is rejected, the rest of his deeds will likewise be rejected. It is an obligation that no Muslim is ever excused from so long as he remains of sound mind. (With the exception of women during their menses and post-natal bleeding)
A Muslim prays according to his ability.
As Allaah has said,
“Fear Allaah to the best of your ability.” (Soorah at-Taghaabun 64:16)
And He, the Most High, has said,
“Allaah does not burden any soul beyond its scope.”(Soorah al-Baqarah 2:286)
Furthermore, the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa Sallam said:
“When I have forbidden you from something, stay away from it [entirely]. When I have ordered you to do something, do as much of it as you are able.” (al-Bukhaari 7288 and Muslim 1337).
From this [generality] is prayer.
A Muslim is to pray to the best of his ability, the best he can, due to the statement of the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa Sallam:
“A sick person prays standing. If he is unable, then he may pray sitting. If he is unable, then he may pray [laying] on his side.” (al-Bukhaari 1117).
Prayer has its required conditions (shuroot), necessary elements (arkaan, lit. pillars), obligations (waajibaat), and recommended manners (sunan).
A sick person is to do as much of these things as he is able to.
Some things are to be done while standing, while others are done while sitting or in prostration.
What is done standing is the initial takbeerah (saying, “Allaahu akbar”), reading [Soorah] Al-Faatihah and whatever else is easy of the Qur’aan, and bowing (rukoo’), which is done by bending over with one’s head and back until the hands reach the knees, saying in that position, “Subhaana Rabbi al-Adheem” (Glorified be Allaah, the Great One).
What is done while sitting is the tashahhud, the prostration, saying, “Subhaana Rabbi al-Aa’laa” (Glorified be Allaah, the Most High) and the tasleem.
How does a [sick] person perform these actions?
If he is able to stand and sit, but cannot bow or prostrate, then he motions with his head for the bowing while he stands, and he motions with his head for the prostration while he sits.
If he is able to sit, but cannot stand, then he performs the initial takbeerah, the recitation of Al-Faatihah and what is easy of the Qur’aan to recite [while sitting].
He motions with his head for the rukoo’ (bowing) while he sits.
He prostrates on the ground if his able.
If not, then he motions with his head for the prostration while sitting, making his nodding [or bending over] lower for prostration than for bowing.
When praying seated, it is better and more complete to sit on the floor if one is able.
If not, then he may sit in a chair, and he does everything a person would do sitting on the floor.
The chair is to be lined up along with the row, and it should be a small chair whenever possible, so it does not take a large amount of space and encroach upon the space of those next to, behind, and in front of him.
He does not pray directly behind the imaam, to leave that place for healthy people who could take his place when needed, or prompt him when he cannot remember something in his recitation.
This is due to his (the Prophet ﷺ) statement, “Let the people of intellect and understanding stand directly behind me [in congregational prayer].” (Muslim 432) (Shaykh Saalih ibn Fowzaan al-Fowzaan, Member of the Council of Senior Scholars)
🍃 Ibn Qudaamah said:
“If a person is unable to do rukoo’ or sujood, he should indicate them by nods or gestures.” (al-‘Umdah Sharh al-‘Iddah, p. 126)
If the sick person cannot even nod or gesture, then he should pray according to his situation; his rukoo’ and sujood could be by intention only and when he reaches them, he can recite the appropriate adhkaar in them.
🔺Facing the qiblah
It’s best if the person can face the qiblah when offering salaah. However if that’s not possible then even pointing his feet towards the qiblah is enough.
🍃 Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said:
“If a sick person cannot stand or sit, he should pray lying on his side with his face towards the qiblah, and if he cannot then he should pray on his back with his feet towards the qiblah.” (Fataawa Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, 2/976)
🔺Combining the prayers
-Such people can also COMBINE their prayers at the times that it’s allowed to in the Sharee’ah, “IF” it’s too difficult for them to pray each prayer on time. But they should do that WITHOUT shortening the prayers.
So they can combine Dhuhr with Asr either at the time of Dhuhr or later at the time of Asr.
And they could also combine Maghrib with Ishaa, either at the time of Maghrib or later at the time of Ishaa.
🍃 The scholars of the Standing Committee said;
“If it is too hard for the sick person to offer every prayer on time, then he may join Dhuhr and ‘Asr, and Maghrib and ‘Isha’, at the time of the earlier or later prayer, according to what is easy for him. If he wishes he may join ‘Asr with Dhuhr at the time of Dhuhr, or if he wishes he may delay Dhuhr and join it with ‘Asr; if he wishes he may join ‘Isha’ with Maghrib at the time of Maghrib, or he may delay Maghrib and join it with ‘Ishaa’.
As for Fajr, it cannot be joined with the prayer before it or after it, because its time is separate from the times of the prayers that come before and after it.” [Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah 24/405]

2024.04.01 04:35 passports_parakeets Stevie Kate is Not Allowed to Know It’s Her Third Birthday, and London Still’s Name is Confirmed after a Long Delay - The Dirtles’ Baby Debut Week in Review

Monday
Jen: Good morning, it is baby day! We are on our way to get Stevie Kate so my worthless son and his shrieking hyena of a wife can go check in to the hospital for her scheduled induction. It’s 6:14 AM! There are sure a lot of people up and on their way with their day at this hour! Must be all the fat poors headed to their soul sucking jobs! Giggle!
Jen: We finally made it over to Steven’s hovel in Allen. Lizard King, bursts into nursery and turns all the lights on: Good morning, let’s wake up my little princess. Sleepy Kate: Nooo! This must all be a terrible nightmare. If I squeeze my eyes tight, it will all go away! Lizard King: Sorry sweetheart, you’re very much awake. Guess what you get today? Shaggy Kate: Something tells me it’s not the haircut I so desperately need. Lizard King: You get a new sister! Now let’s sing brainwashing songs about having a good attitude and keeping sweet!
Dummy: Kimmy’s settled in and ready to go. And you know what that means. I’m bored at the hospital so I finally took five minutes to half ass make a reel showcasing what a worthless lazy troll I am, and an eleventh hour baby bracket.
Jen: Stevie Kate, I have another baby for you! Aunt Emily brought you baby chicks! Lily doesn’t get one, but you get two! One for you and one for Sister Kate! DO YOU WANT TO HOLD ONE? DO YOU WANT TO PET ONE? Stevie Kate: Nooo. Fuck that chicken shit. Jen: Oh well, at least McKennaKate likes to play with the baby chicks! We named one VIOLET. Sorry Kimmy and Steven, I know you wanted to name Disappointment Baby Violet, but I stole it so it is a no go! Time to toss monogrammed outfit option number one! What should we name the other chick? Chickenna Kate? Hey Emily, I need to make room for 500 more outfits I can shill! Do you want to clean out my closet and take home last season’s Walmart clothes in exchange for these chicks? No, no, don’t touch the Chanel! You can only have the stuff I link up for the poors. While you clean my closet, I am going to shill these bras to the poors, then you can take them home with you too! The plebs are all here looking for baby news, so I have a captive audience to sell to. Cha-Ching! Three hours later. Jen: Good job, Emily. You removed 19 trash bags of junk from my closet! Apologies in advance to my brother when you arrive home with all this trash. Giggle. Oh hey Squeezie Kate, I forgot about you. Has Belle been watching you? Are you harming coloring with the chicks? I am glad you warmed up to them! Good job coloring Violet purple!
Tuesday
“Hear ye! Hear ye! The Royal Screech Owl of Allen was safely delivered of a daughter at 6:35 PM yesterday. The Shrieking Lady and her nameless child are both doing well. Welcome to the world of social media exploitation, little one.” Such went the proclamation on Kimmy’s official Instagram account announcing the arrival of Her Royal Highness Houghton along with some photos of The Royal Screech Owl looking absolutely radiant, put together and camera ready moments after delivery as if she were Kate Middleton herself, and HRH Houghton looking a lot like Stevie Kate. TBD if Big Sister Kate bowed and said My Queen upon their first meeting, as Dimmy and Dummy didn’t share any stories today, and Jen somehow held back from spoiling the actual moment of their meeting although she so badly wanted to, as she showed the lead-up stories to the event, and fucked up big time by asking Stevie Kate what the baby’s name was.
Jen: Do you want to meet baby sister? Big Sister Kate: Yeah. Jen: Do you know her name yet? Big Sister Kate: Um, London, still? Jen: I don’t know what her name is. Wink wink. Do you want to name her Delilah Pete the Barn Cat? Big Sister Kate: No. Do you want to fuck all the way off?
Next we had to endure the painful backstory of Delilah Pete the Barn Cat, which was hard for any animal lover to watch, but just to quickly recap, it involved feeding a starving homeless cat nuts, cat food out of a sharp-edged metal tin, and milk, followed by abandoning said cat and leaving it with no water, promising to “make it Steve’s barn cat” and “come back one day,” all while the kitten tried to cling to the helicopter while Steve cruelly flew away, leaving it to fend for survival on the ranch. Stevie Cat had sadly tried in vain to save Delilah Pete but was overruled by her terrible overlords. What will Delilah Pete succumb to first? Dehydration, wild hogs, or Senior’s cruelty?
Feral Ann mentioned she and Toe planned to stop by the hospital to see the new baby after their visit to the new nuuds distribution center today, and panned to a gift bag in the backseat of her car. Did it contain new Tones onesie prototypes from a new baby line? A stuffed animal pinworm? An assortment of the “sickest” infant gear in shades of brown and beige? For once she showed restraint and didn’t spoil their visit with any stories or a name reveal.
Next it was time for Jen to get Balloonish to decorate Dimmy’s house with two giant balloon “installs” so the Dirtles’ house can smell even worse than it already does when they arrive home from the hospital. The world’s largest bow-loon was slapped up above Dimmy and Dummy’s stove, which seems like a fire hazard since it keeps falling down, but luckily they don’t cook. Next, Unsafe Kate was subjected to both Tiffany’s germs via Lily and a skinned knee thanks to Jen dragging her by hand to aggressively skip down the sidewalk in order to burn enough calories for the day. Because Jen didn’t have a current code for Active Skin Repair, Stevie Kate didn’t get any treatment for her bad scrape and had to bake cookies on the floor while she crouched painfully on her knee instead. Meanwhile Tiffany was spiraling hard from her mystery illness and lack of attention, and went to urgent care to get an emergency Rx for content and engagement. The sicker she got, the more feverish and frantic her positing became.
Wednesday
Dimmy returned to stories with a picture of Nameless Kate swaddled and sleeping, and captioned her photo as follows:
Current Status: Withholding baby name for engagement
Thank you all so much for all the sweet comments and DMs! Keep them coming as you wait, and wait, and wait some more! This last 24 hours have been so special and magical for our family as we plan the best way to monetize Clickbait Kate!
Then she shared a photo and video of Kash Kow Kate moments after birth which probably should have been kept private.
The next lavender slide was a very dramatic text caption “2 days earlier” followed by videos from Monday.
Dummy: We made it to the airport! I mean the hospital. Dimmy: I mean, you’re more than welcome to fly to Honk Honk for all I care.
Dimmy: You guys, we went into the hospital with three name possibilities: my pick, Steven’s pick and Stevie Kate’s pick! So Steven filmed everything three times, using a different name each time, because “Nameless Kate” is the pathetic storyline line we picked for this baby! I hope you’re enjoying the suspense a$ much a$ we are! The birth certificate person is coming in 15 minutes and we still haven’t picked a name! But we can reveal we ruled out Stevie Kate’s name choice, Camel!
Dimmy: Okay so from 9:30-5:30 it was a “ready set wait” situation. Then things got real SO FAST. At 5:38 PM I was dilated to a 5. At 6:12 PM I was texting Feral Ann!
Rachel the delivery nurse: Oh it’s time! Dimmy: Hang on, I’m texting Daryl Ann. Rachel: No, it’s TIME. Dimmy: You don’t understand, she is our Lord & Savior, and I must finish this message to her first!
Dimmy: At 6:35, Nameless Kate made her entrance into the world before Daryl Ann even read my message! What an amazing and easy delivery! I texted through the whole thing! And she stayed head down!
Dummy shared some baby photos over on his account too, sprinkling in lots of love for his sponsors (Minky, Beam) and employers Sr and Jen. He shared a photo of the Lizard King in his leather button down shirt cradling his newest granddaughter, and reshared Jen’s bleached out photos of her Easter decor: “Easter 2024. Calling it right now. This is my favorite decor you have ever done, mom.” Jen responded by DM: March 27, 2024. Good try. You’re still my least favorite child. And you’re still expected to clock in on Monday. Enjoy your week off.
Jen: Holy crap, we’re finally done with babysitter duty. No more slumming it at Kimmy and Steven’s house. My God, sleeping in Steve’s new Raptor would be more accommodating than that hovel. And I was about to deck Steve if he sang that Houghton family song to Stevie Kate one more time. Except I would never do that, because millions. Giggle. So Stevie Kate has now been “united” with Mommy, Daddy, and that damn baby they haven’t told me the official name of yet. Not that I am bitter or anything. Giggle. So now I am off to see that attention whore Tiffany who keeps crying to me we haven’t spent enough time with her and Lily since they returned from their COVID cruise.

2024.03.18 21:50 SlimeBody Margiela Tabis (womens) [IN HAND REVIEW]

Margiela Tabis (womens) [IN HAND REVIEW]
Hello, this is my in hand review of a pair of sling back low-heel tabis as well as classic 8cm heel tabis.
Some stats:
My size is a women's euro 37/ us 6-7. I have wide feet so typically I have to size up. I am 5'2"/ 160cm, 63kg/138lbs, this is referenced later.
Agent, Shipping Line, and Location: Wegobuy, I'm outdated it seems considering the "PandaBuy wave", been on the sub for about four years thou. Shipped with GD-EMS at $86.22 USD for weight of 3042g with boxes, took about a week to ship to Toronto. Declared $14 USD.
Both shoes are from seller "Big Pig's Trotters Split-Toe Shoes" on Taobao
Link: https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=646665859577&spm=1101.1101.N.N.6db06e9 Colour: \"Milky White\"

Side Profile
REVIEW
Very comfortable and walkable, wide feet approved. Slightly narrow in style so please size up if you also have wider feet. Otherwise TTS. The rim of the shoe does not dig into the top of the foot unlike a cheap pair of tabi ballerina flats purchased from a different seller, which was a major concern for me. I'm not skilled enough to determine if its really leather, but the material is soft and smooth with a light grain. There is a slight factory smell, but nothing that won't dissipate after a couple hours in open air. There is also a sticker left on bottom that leaves a sticky residue but was removable with isopropyl alcohol spray.
TL;DR
Soft leather, comfortable and no digging into foot. Fully branded on top and bottom, comes with dust bags and branded box. Size up if you have wide feet.

Bottom to show branding and sole
REVIEW
Also very comfortable and walkable, wide feet approved. Leather is also soft with smooth grain. To reference my height, as I am shorter with smaller feet and a higher heel can cause me to be unstable and in pain as my foot is bent at such a sharp angle. This is not the case, the thick heel keeps me stable and the inner sole is slightly plush which is enough to keep the ball of my foot comfortable. MAJOR NOTE, the upper portion of the boot is slightly narrow when closed which makes the bottom most hook a little difficult to do up. I mentioned by weight above as reference and I also have somewhat muscular legs/calves which creates the slight difficulty. This isn't the worst thing for me at least as I feel the tension on the hooks will prevent them from coming loose with walking as some people with retail and rep tabis have reported. Factory smell VERY strong but the seller notes that this is because of how "fresh" they are from the factory...interesting reason haha. Again, there is also a sticker left on bottom that leaves a sticky residue but was removable with isopropyl alcohol spray.
TL;DR
Comfortable and walkable, size up for wide feet. If you have wide calves either pass or have measured while clasped by your agent. Smell is noticeable but again, just let it air out and you're good. Branded inner and outer sole. Comes with dust bags and branded box.

FINAL NOTES
The bottoms are quite smooth, this is the same with retail as seen in photos and reviews. I'm planning on taking them to a cobbler to have a protective bottom placed to create grip and increased longevity. I'd also like to note, while I like that these are branded (especially since I'm bringing them to a cobbler who has seen many retail tabis lol) I don't care much about exact 1:1 details as I do with material. These feel comfortable and sturdy and thats enough for me!
!!!BONUS!!!
PLEASE buy proper socks for the boots, I've purchased 6 pairs in the past for some Reebok x Margiela sneakers and just purchased another 9 pairs for my boots. Link below, fit well on my feet but I wouldn't push past a women's size 8 as they shrink upon washing. Highly recommend on taobao/weidian/tmall etc as at least in North America it's hard and expensive to find pairs of tabi socks.
Link: https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=626862442606&sku_properties=20509:28383
Also, if you're here just to comment "camel toes" "ugly" "ninja turtle shoes" please just scroll past and go get your fifth QC on a FOG essentials hoodie lmao

2024.03.18 07:55 healinglilred Sober St. Paddy’s

https://imgur.com/a/Vfq75nk
I did not think about beer at all this weekend especially today when it’s the most prominent day to drink alcohol till we are blacked out and filled with shame. That used to be my St. Paddy’s but not today.
This morning I cooked chocolate chip pancakes for my family including my kid brother and his son. He just recently got back into my life after 10 years of being apart due to toxic dysfunctional family. I enjoy making special goodies for them like chocolate chip pancakes. They stayed the night last night and we had a good time and the house was loud with happiness. After breakfast we got out the tattoo kit and got “camel toe” tattoos on our right toes. My brother, my kid’s dad and myself all got the word camel tattoo on our big toe. I have been wanting this silly tattoo forever and I am so happy I was able to get them on board with the idea as well. Next is a moose on my thumb muscle but the outline of the moose from Rocky and Bullwinkle 😂. I’m proof that you can be sober and still get dumb tattoos. I made an amazing sober memory on a day where alcohol is everywhere and sometimes green. I truly thought that you need to have a drink in your hand to have a good time. This is the 1st St. Paddy’s Day that I have been sober in almost 5 years. We went to the park as a family and watch the kiddos play as well as the adults. My family is truly like a bunch of kids, we love to play and tease each other. The sun was shining of the first time in weeks and the wind calmed down as well making the day enjoyable.
I think I would rather spend my day like this, the memories I created and were apart of today will be the story we tell our kids and grandkids later on. “Wanna hear how grandma/auntie convinced us to get this tattoo?” 😂
Life is too short not to live it with some humor. AND….
Life is too short to live it with alcohol.

2024.03.08 16:15 Lofi_Loki Trip Report: Cumberland Island National Seashore.

Where: Cumberland Island GA, US.
When: 3/1/2024-3/3/2024
Distance: Approx. 35 mile. We did not follow the caltopo route 100% and did some wandering.
Conditions: I think 15F higher than average temps for this time of year. 60-75F
Lighterpack: https://lighterpack.com/vz1vtk.
Useful Pre-Trip Information or Overview: The logistics of this trip were a little more complicated than "drive to trailhead, walk" because of the ferry schedule. It was like $45 per person for a round trip which isn't too bad and we saw some dolphins/porpoises. We got a cheap hotel in St. Mary's GA (the town the ferry leaves from) on Thursday night because checkin for the ferry is at 8AM. There are several potable sources and several non-potable water sources on the island. The rangers told us that a few had a very strong sulfur smell/taste so we ended up doing a 15 mile water carry to avoid one of those sources. Given the weather, 4L was plenty for that because I cameled up and it's easy hiking. All of the water was from pumps or spigots, so it was at least clear. Bring crystal light/mio/whatever for sure. We went through a lot of it. Dunkin instant iced coffee is very passable too.
Given the unseasonably warms temps, the gnats were already getting pretty bad. During the day we didn't have many issues between permethrin treated clothes, Picaridin, and just staying moving. Night one at Brickhill Bluff we dealt with a decent swarm, but the Xmid 2 has plenty of room for two people to eat dinner and relax. We porched one of the doors out with a pole and watched the sunset from inside the tent. A head net is something I bring on every trip unless I'm 100% sure there won't be bugs, and it was a lifesaver on this trip.
Day one (11miles) we hike up to the north end of the island and stopped for lunch at Plum Orchard (about halfway, they also do tours a few times per day but the timing didn't work out for us to go inside) and got to walk around outside of one of the Carnegie mansions on the island. It's owned and managed by the parks service now afaik. The wildlife on the island is very comfortable around people so we saw several wild horses and approximately 1 million armadillos.
Day two (14?) we hiked up to the First African Baptist Church and got to walk around inside the Alberty House that has been set up as a very cool exhibit that talks about the lifestyle of freed slaves who bought land and built a communit on Cumberland. After Plum Orchard on day one, we didn't see any other people until we set up camp on night 2. After we turned around and headed back south to Hickory Hill (our campground night two), we saw a lot more wildlife on the less-traveled north end of the island. We tried to take a spur trail to the beach and had to turn around because an alligator was sunning in the middle of the trail and would not move. Aside from an added mile or so from gator-dodging, hiking was super smooth aside from a little palm frond bushwhacking. We camped in by far the worst thunderstorm I've ever experienced (someon said it rained almost 2" in 3 hours overnight and the weather report I could dig up said 1.8"). I set up on the highest spot I could find and ran out every additional guyline I could and the Xmid 2 held up like a champ. I didn't have to adjust anything and the tent was taut and dry all night. Using the peak guylines and full sized groundhogs helped a ton in the sand. We both had lightload towels which came in handy to wipe the tent down in the morning, especially because shaking it got most of the water off.
Day 3 (11ish) we packed up around 4:30 AM and hiked out to the beach through some nice mushy flooded trail to watch the sunrise on the beach. When we got there we decided hiking down the beach and seeing the sunrise would be more enjoyable than backtracking so we did around two miles down to Stafford beach where there are flushable toilets and potable water. This was probably my favorite part of the whole trip. We still didn't see any people and the scale of the empty beach was incredible. After we made it to Stafford it was smooth sailing again back to the ranger station. We stopped and ate before doing the 1 mile walk down to a cool museum with a timeline and artifacts from the island's native inhabitants. We also saw Dungeness (another abandoned Carnegie mansion that eventually ended up burning down).
All in all it was a killer trip, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone wanting to get out in the colder months to see some neat wildlife, especially history nerds because there's so much cool stuff on the island to see. Apparently the birdwatching is also great, but I know nothing about that. For two people we spent like $500 between hotels, ferry passes, park passes (you need a park pass in addition to camping permits), and camping permits. We got a hotel on St. Simons Sunday night to have a bit of time to relax and I'd highly recommend that as well. I think there's campgrounds close by that would be cheaper than a hotel, but the surestay marriot or whatever was clean and $50 per person, so it was worth it IMO.

Photo Album: Imgur wouldn't accept the HEIC file type so here's imgbb. For some reason it rotated a few pictures. Who knows... https://ibb.co/album/nBxFkx. I have a few hundred pictures and a few hours of GoPro video to go through so I may post again once I get organized.
Gear:The Mariposa carried great. I have had zero issues and GG packs fit me really well. Head to toe I really like my hiking clothing setup right now. The MH shirt and pants worked great and were a godsend because of the bugs. I could watch them land on my treated clothes, walk around for a sec, then fall off dead. The Injinji liner+DT micro hiker sock combo worked perfectly again, and my feet were pretty much constantly wet. I packed a pair of capilene leggings that I wore to sleep in to let my hiking underwear and pants air out because I didn't bring any spare clothes. Saxx Quest stayed minimally stinky so they'll remain my go-to.
I brought an EE 40f enigma (the lightest quilt I have) and it was still too warm so it sat in my pack liner at the foot of the tent most of the time. The xmid was 10/10, especially because we had to eat dinner in the tent both nights because of bugs/weather. The cook system was a cook system. I greatly prefer the soto over a BRS because of the boil time. I should've just brought a CCF instead of the xlite because the ground was mostly sand and was plenty soft.
I brought the NU43 because my girlfriend was using my NU25 and I dug it, I don't know if I like it enough to make the weight worth it, but the throw was nice to have and I prefer the beam pattern a bit more.
The HMG Versa was my favorite new piece of gear by far and this was my first trip with a fannypack (come at me fanny pack and HMG haters). It kept my phone dry and held half a day's worth of food so I didn't have to cram my hip pockets full or stop at all. There are lighter options, but this one had the features I wanted. It'll definitely be a mainstay from now on.

2024.03.03 10:28 kaleviko [All] Looking for a potato

In P8, the strange creature credited as the Experiment was floating in the void. It appeared to feel sick and vomited some substance. There were solid, round items among the vomit, one of which flew apart from the rest. Later in the episode, it was some kind of 1956, and there was an egg lying on the New Mexico sand, hatching some ghastly frog-moth. We assumed this must have been the thing that got away from the vomit, even if the storyline didn't seem to make much sense.
Later in P15, Dr Amp had a chat with Nadine outside her shop. He hadn't seen her for a while.
Dr Amp: "You know, the ... last ... last time I saw you, it was about seven years ago. You ... you were down on your hands and knees, looking for a potato."
What that was about was left for us to figure out. For some unknown purpose, it appeared to urge us to look for a potato. Where could we find one?
The lost potato.
The trick here probably was that the item that flew apart from the Experiment's vomit was not the egg hatching on the sand. Instead, it was Nadine's lost potato. Just as it got closest to the screen, its shape was visibly irregular and thus closer to a potato than an egg.
We might not need to know where the potato went as its purpose may have been to convey what the Experiment had eaten before it fell sick, such as French fries, for example. Another outcome would be that the origins of the egg on the sand were now a new mystery.
Head on the sand ready to hatch.
Something that did resemble an egg was the midsection of the camel statue in the park playground's sand area in Las Vegas, seen in P6. That camel had been, presumably, on the shoulders of the Albert who earlier in the episode walked through a bar to meet with Diane before he got decapitated, for this or that reason, the magical bar then turning into the park and his head into the statue.
If this was now followed as intended, the strange frog-moth that hatched out of the egg would actually have broken free from Albert's severed head. Then it crawled across the sand, flew up to an open window and forced its way into the sleeping girl through her mouth, aided by a Lincoln look-alike murderous Woodsman whose chant from the radio had put a sleeping spell on her.
Elsewhere in P12, another kind of radio was repeating another kind of chant at a Twin Peaks hospital.
"... three one zero ... three one zero ... "
This cut to another female lying unconscious on bed, Miriam Sullivan. Earlier in P10, Richard hit her in the head in her trailer and left her lying in a pool of blood. This would link back to the Girl 1956 who fell asleep while the Woodsman was slowly crushing the Disc Jockey's skull, his blood dripping on the floor.
In her dreams it all went differently.
More suggestive similarities followed. Miriam was a nursery school teacher, and the Girl and her date the Boy talked about school. Miriam crawled through the forest, and the frog-moth crawled to the window. Miriam had flowers and a white lamp shade by her bedside while the Girl's room was decorated with floral tapestry, and she also had a lamp with a white shade.
As camera slowly panned across Miriam, a monitor at the head of her bed came into frame. On screen, there was some man's name there, Henry Lawson. Next to the name, there was an almost empty IV fluid bag. Someone should soon fill more liquid in it.
Henry \"Hank\" fill-more was there.
Like the frog-moth went into the Girl, the IV fluid had gone into Miriam. This would become meaningful because Henry's diminutive is Hank, suggesting that this understated bedside installment was an absurd abstraction for Hank Fillmore, the Arrowhead Way maintenance man from Buckhorn, who made a strange appearance in the opening episode, now implied to have been linked to the frog-moth from Albert's head.
The frog-moth likened to liquid was also suggested by the Woodsman's chant as the phallic creature forced its way to the Girl.
"This is the water. And this is the well. Drink full and descend."
After the creature was inside the Girl's mouth, she swallowed, and thus the frog-moth went down her throat. This takes us on another ride to P11 when Hawk presented his "always current" old map to Sheriff Truman. Like he promised, it would probably be current also for this scene.
The twin mountains on the map both had an image painted on the side. On the left, there was the White Tail Peak, with a descending swallow, on the right, the Blue Pine Mountain, with what looked like a dungeon or the Jumping Man's shadow on a grey background.
If you put these two symbols together, you get to swallow a nasty little creature.
Also the frog-moth had a long, sharp beak, coupled with a pair of wings on its back. On each side, it had three thin front legs, matching three thin black lines drawn from the beaked profile. The little monster seems to have been put together from the symbols on the mountainsides, further hinted by the Girl swallowing it and the Woodsman chanting about descending.
So then, we would have Hank Fillmore on one hand and the twin peaks on the other, with a further connection to Albert's severed head. We'd probably need one more wild connection before any of this absurdity starts making sense.
It seems she didn't really make it.
When the camera panned across Miriam's body, the frame was briefly split between yellow and light green colors. These were also the colors of the Buckhorn morgue wall in the room where Detectives Macklay and Harrison were reviewing autopsy results for another large body, that of a decapitated man who had Major Briggs's fingerprints. The respective "patients" also shared a blue patch: she had it around her arm whereas he had one hanging from his toe, seen in P7.
No re-entry for this T.
The male corpse had its chest torn open, as if an Alien face-hugger's baby had pushed itself out. Perhaps something else than just an autopsy had been going on there.
Later in P7, the Coroner had stitched the body up. The stitch resembled the letter T which would take us to Ike "the Spike" Stadtler's bloody rampage in Lorraine's office in P6 when he got a bleeding wound on his bald head, also resembling the letter T. This Spike's weapon of choice was a spike, a kind of scratch awl, linking back to the frog-moth that had a similar sharp beak and to Hank Fillmore who had a similar completely bald head.
The premier's case went up the ladder.
When we first saw Spike, he was playing craps with two dice whereas Hank was carrying a bag of trash. Later in P9, Spike was drinking Evan Williams bourbon whereas Hank carried a Gladstone suitcase, named so after William E. Gladstone, the 19th century Premier of the United Kingdom, which was reflected in the word "premiere" on Spike's motel's signboard, another kind of case. While Hank had a ladder next to his Gladstone, there was a ladder-like support for the "MOTEL" sign under the other "Premier".
The motel also had a lonely palm tree on its yard. Buckhorn was way up north where palm's won't grow but when the police arrived to check the property, a palm tree was reflected on their car's windows on both sides. Hank wore coveralls whereas all of the headless male corpse inside had been covered by a blue blanket. Only Hank's bald head stuck out, surrounded by a green collar. The collar resembled the manner how the corpse's chest was torn open in P5, again recalling the famously bloody scene in Alien and Lynch's own Eraserhead (1977) where another Henry struggled with a problematic bald baby.
The \"Stapler\" twins were coming that weekend.
In the same episode that the Coroner presented the torn-open corpse, we got a hint what had really come out of it. Sheriff Truman was in Hawk's office when his wife Doris bursted in, listing some of her current grievances.
Doris: "The twins are coming this weekend!"
As she said that, she quickly waved towards Hawk's desk. In that direction, there was a neck-wide piece of cut wood next to a stapler, possibly in reference to the similarly decapitated corpse and Spike's last name Stadtler. A bit later, she waved her hand towards it again.
Doris: "Do you realize what this is gonna cause?"
The Stadtler twins.
Like Hawk's map also suggested by associating the frog-moth with Twin Peaks, what went into the Girl as one probably came out as twins.
There apparently were two different, though physically identical, Spikes in the motel. One was armed with the spike, seen in P6, whereas the other had his arm broken, ready to flee, seen later in P9 leaving a message for "JT" that apparently was the former crazier Spike, his likely twin. Whereas the spike that the first Spike used as a weapon connected him to the beaked profile on the Blue Pine Mountain, the way how the later Spike kept swallowing Evan Williams bourbon linked him to the descending swallow on the White Tail Peak. Twin Peaks, twin Spikes.
What we got so far here seems to have been a heavily abstracted story, ramped up to extreme surreal heights the way only Lynch knows how to do, about a girl who got raped and gave birth to a very troubled baby boy. But what had Albert's head got to do with all this?
