Men with long hair
LONG HAIR ON MEN Traditionally, long hair was always a symbol of masculinity. All of history's great warriors had long hair, from the Greeks (who wrote odes to their heroes' hair) to the Nordic, from the American Indians (famous for their long shiny hair) to the Japanese.

2024.05.19 03:11 Clothes_More The true mental illness of feminists, right under our noses

I don't know if I should call this a rant or not but I will try to make it as conclusive as possible to further understand my take on the mental illness that is feminism.
What I noticed on reddit, if anywhere else, is that OUR arguments and jokes on the MRM side are always mirrored on the feminist side with gleeful autism, almost like their stupid ovaryactions are wisdoms written in stone from Themyscira(land of fictional feminists angry at the greek god of war).
It's almost like our gendered issues can be mirrored in a way that is expected of a dimorphic species with global ties by means of technological advancement. We COULD even find common cause and understanding when we drop the bias towards our own genders (women AND men having a bias towards women, so empathy is definitely the strong suite of feminists).
But no, instead we have THIS level of hipocrisy and lack of self-awareness.
LOL
THEY are calling us self-absorbed by our own worth?!
And then we have ANOTHER rhethoric from the illustrious gender of our species.
Ahem..
- The most famous Russian Empress, Catherine The Great, usurped the throne from her own husband (who was eventually killed), and led furious wars with Crimean Khanate and Ottoman Empire through all her reign. She severely suppressed a few peasant riots within the country and crushed Poland which was later partitioned.
-Elizabeth of Russia usurped the throne during the military coup from the young Tzar Ivan VI (who was only one year old) and led the country during two major European wars: War of Austrian Succession and Seven Years’ War.
-Isabella of France, Queen of England, dethroned and executed her own husband, King Edward II, in close collaboration with her lover.
-Catherine de Medici is considered to be among the main organizers of St. Bartholomew’s day massacre; she was also one of the inspirers of the Religious Wars in France.
-Empress Dowager Cixi before she became the empress, she had killed many Tang royal family members to the point they were nearly wiped out, she is partly responsible for the fall of Qing Dynasty
-Empress Zenobia of Palmyria starting a revolt in the eastern fringes of the Roman Empire against the very wishes of her husband who was loyal to Rome. Because muh oppression I guess.
-Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who's involvement in East Pakistan led to the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.
Are YOU really having this argument with MEN?!

2024.05.18 23:39 moregrapejuice nightmare wedding guest has insatiable main character syndrome

nightmare wedding guest has insatiable main character syndrome
before I begin... I AM SO EXCITED TO WRITE THIS <3 the wedding I will be discussing in this post happened last may and the whole time I was there I was thinking of how it BELONGS on one of Charlotte's wedding drama videos.
FYI this is super long and contains a multitude of characters, so naturally, we will be code-naming everyone :p this is an Indian wedding and I'll try to explain the relevant culture and traditions as best as I can. there are also PICTURES!
our main character (aka the Nightmare wedding guest herself)- let's call her Anna (35F) comes from a rich background- meaning she's daddy's princess and has gotten pretty much anything she wanted her whole life. she is currently married with one kid (7M). for a bit of background, Anna's husband (J-35M) grew up in a joint family- which basically means his fraternal first cousins and him grew up in the same house and are practically siblings. We will call these cousin-siblings Pen(35F) & Dan(28M- also the groom in this story).
Anna is a self-titled social media influencer (sigh, is anyone surprised) and has around 11k followers on her (verified) instagram account, most of which I suspect she paid for. She heavily face tunes her face/body in an extremely millennial way- so it's super obvious because her face is weirdly glazed over and smooth in all her pictures. Her husband is sweet and introverted, a simple guy. He's more her personal photographer (something he said to me HIMSELF) than anything else. ANYWAYS. LET US BEGIN.
Indian weddings are extremely different to American/european (im trying to say white) weddings. Every guest is expected to be decked up- whether you're someone's great-great grandma or a 3 month old baby. It's almost disrespectful to not wear your best outfits to a wedding. it's normal to shop for your family members' weddings, but most people will just buy something inexpensive- LOCALLY- and then wear that to the next few weddings they go to as well.
Dan is my maternal uncle (aka my mum's first cousin) and is the last in their generation to get married (which means i'm next, yikes). we (my immediate family) all bought an outfit or two each- but we also do a lot of swapping in my (extended) family- which essentially means all my aunts and grandmas will exchange clothes so that no one is 'repeating' an outfit (lol) and we don't have to buy heavy traditional clothes every time there's a wedding in the family (there's no practical use for them outside of such occasions). for example my younger sister wore a dress of mine while I wore something that belongs to my aunt. something like that.
coming back to Anna, this lady got on a FLIGHT to a different STATE for 'wedding shopping'. this is decidedly reserved only for the bride. like, imagine a guest from your wedding goes to Kleinfeld or some famous bridal shop to shop for your wedding... that's weird, right? I put her outfits into google lens to find a picture of her exact outfits without exposing her identity- and I found every one of them on bridal boutique websites.
not only did she go to several bridal stores in this state- but the also bought a RING- 'just to wear to the wedding'.
who. buys. a. ring. to. wear. to. someone. else's. wedding. WHO DOES THAT.
Anna's ring cost 50K INR (roughly 598 USD) while the BRIDE's (Sarah-26F) ring was 60K INR (roughly 718 USD). Buying jewellery/accessories again is FINE but most people would just buy something artificial? or wear something they already own if they want to wear like gold, or something. Buying clothes worth thousands of rupees and a RING for someone else's wedding is genuinely crazy. another funny bit is that she flew to this different state (her dad paid for her flight tix) but made her son & husband take the train, lol. I don't even think they bought any clothes for themselves, it was just Anna doing the shopping.
Now, there were about 5-6 functions that took place over 3 days, and the bride had a different outfit for each of them. most of these clothes were designer and paid for by the groom's family. After hearing of Anna's antics a lot of people advised Dan's mum to keep the bride's clothes out of Anna's sight- so that she doesn't end up wearing the same thing to the wedding. As expected Anna kept asking to see them.
Finally, the functions begin. Most family had travelled from different states and we all stayed at the resort where the wedding was being held. We had rooms that fit around 6-8 people each. Two wings of the resort were taken over by our wedding party- one for the bride's family and one for the groom's. Now, they had set up ONE team of make-up & hair artists for anyone who wanted to get dolled up for any of the functions. you had to pay a small fee for each function, and it was completely optional. again this is super normal for Indian weddings. these make-up artists were pretty mediocre and they were dealing with 50-60 wedding guests for multiple functions a day, so naturally their work was more quick than good.
the bride obviously had a separate make-up and hair artist, because getting her ready obviously took much longer. imagine our surprise when we find out that the bride was not the ONLY one which a private make-up artist. yep, you guessed it. Anna had hired a personal make-up artist JUST for herself. it was almost as if she had forgotten... that it wasn't HER wedding.
next, we have a function called the 'Mehendi', which literally means 'henna'. usually a team of henna artists is hired and everyone gathers in a big hall and sits on the floor and gets their henna done. the henna designs are pretty generic, but you can also show the henna artists inspo photos if you want something specific.
the bride usually gets a more elaborate design- picture attached. the two highlights of 'bridal henna' are: 1) henna goes up to the elbows and knees (guests will only get it done until their forearms and usually nothing on the feet/legs). and 2) the design has a little window on each arm that will depict a bride in one window and the groom in another. as a guest you can get anything done, as long as its not this.
bridal henna
miss Anna of course decided that she had to hire a personal henna artist 3 days before the wedding to get henna up to her elbows, complete with the windows and everything. she claimed it was because her son was involved in one of the functions (irrelevant so I won't elaborate)... like why do you need a bride and groom drawn on your arms if you're not the one getting married?
NOW for the finale and grand finale. The day of the wedding is finally here. Indian brides usually wear shades of red for their wedding ceremony. this can range from hot pink to a deep maroon. The first time my family and I stepped out of our hotel room on the day of the wedding, we saw a girl in a hot pink 'lehenga' (wedding dress basically) getting professional photographs of herself taken. we were like awh, the bride is already ready! I love her dress.
...yeah, it was Anna. for the sake of comparison- imagine someone wearing an 'off-white' full on wedding dress to your wedding. she even wore these bangles with tassels (usually worn by brides). thankfully Sarah's dress (deep red) was much more elaborate and she looked gorgeous, Anna was no match for her. her bangle tassels were also bigger than Anna's :p
COMING TO THE GRAND FINALE THE ABSOLUTE WORST PART OF THIS STORY. after the couple is officially married, the very last function is the wedding reception. the bride and groom are usually on a stage and every family will go get pictures taken with them and offer them congratulations. Sarah wore a gorgeous designer sari (picture attached) for the occasion- it was purple and silver and glittery and perfect, however it wasn't very heavy. it was definitely more simple than the rest of her gowns and saris, but she looked beautiful nonetheless.
Anna showed up to this function in a poofy golden-silver gown- picture attached. it looked like a Quinceañera dress. she looked SO overdressed and pompous, mostly because she was clearly more done-up than the bride (which is so hard to do in an Indian wedding and somehow she still managed I'm lowkey impressed). if you look at the pictures, you'll realise how stark the difference between Anna and Sarah's outfits is.
anna's poofy gown
as if this wasn't bad enough, Anna's aunt showed up in... the exact sari the bride was wearing. I kid you not, this woman had the exact same DESIGNER PURPLE AND SILVER SARI AS THE BRIDE. and she had the balls to go up onto the stage for pictures. I'm told she sheepishly laughed and commented on the same sari. The bride was visibly seething (OBVIOUSLY) and honestly I felt so bad for her.
bride's sari
Anna realised that sharing a house with Sarah for the rest of time wouldn't go over well, so wearing the same sari herself would've been too much. that's why she made her aunt wear it. and if you're thinking it might be coincidence- that particular sari was from some niche designer that Dan's family and Sarah together spent literal months looking for. it also cost around 30K INR which is an insane amount of money to spend for an outfit you're wearing once to someone else's wedding. (for reference one full outfit I bought- including accessories- came to about 1.5K INR).
There are more things that she did that I could mention but I'll stop now because this is already so long. I shudder to think of what she must have been like at her own wedding, lol. if you've made it this far, thank you for reading :)

2024.05.18 15:30 Thighbite77 [M4A] A Scholar, a killer, your royal prisoner.

King Tarin was a very famous, vulgar debauch. As he grew older, it only seemed as if his entitlement to these indulgences over his kingly responsibilities grew. The health of his people? Safety of his lands? Cleanliness of his own water systems? All concerns faded within his drink and the company he paid for. The only reason he remained in power was the religious vice grip his priests had over the land, who benefited plently off the same sort of luxuries while the common people starved. Honestly? The only reason I entertained him as a scholar was to gain access to the vast amount of scrolls and texts he coincidently harboured. I fully intended to legally take over responsibility for the artefacts, but I wouldn't have been too bothered if theft was required, which it eventually was. Decades of being a mockery of a monarch had caught up to the indulgent King in the form of a take over. Sadly, the twisted religious preachings the people had lived under for so long stoked an amount of resistance and most of the capital city descended into conflict in a day. I hustled as many scriptures of books into a cart to leave this failed state far behind. Only, some bastard thought it an effective method to weaken the King's forces by burning anything he could, including the stables, housing the cart, housing the books I'd been coveting for months. So yeah.... safe to say i was slightly annoyed.
Upon leaving the West, I came to understand not as many self titled "scholars" in these parts took the time to learn skills I grew up practising. So it was only around the 30th man I laid in the dirt that day, that I realised people were looking at me with quite the large sum of fear. Yes, 60 at the end of the day may be quite a few dead soldiers for a librarian and academic to achieve, without armour and only his foreign blades, but I didn't exactly stop to consider it. I was still a little heated about the books....
It took roughly 3 hours, 5 men dog piling me, ankle shackles, cuffs and a muzzle to mellow me out. Apparently a book worm carving up trained foot soldiers and knights was enough to warrant me being captured and brought to the instigators of this little take over. Which turned out to be your royal house of origin. And now, after months of simply trying to take care of some books, I kneeled before your royal family, chained and muzzled like an animal, a humble scholar with a sharp tongue, sharper blades and a startlingly high body count.
Further Details
So, the show took so many creative liberties that it was basically impregnated with inaccuracies, but Netflix's Marco Polo show truly does make me adore the fish out of water plots were someone inexperienced with a kingdom's culture, systems and even ruling family is brought and held in a strange land against their will. Forced to learn and adapt or perish, perhaps even finding something to admire and adore about their new home. I wish for you to fulfil your wish of creating a kingdom of your desires, and to play a very high ranking member of its society. Be it the supreme ruling King, Queen, Emperor, Empress, or even secondary relative to the current ruler. Style it in a European aesthetic, Asian, Indian, Middle Eastern, populate it with humans, humans with magical gifts, orcs, elves, tieflings, be as original as you'd like. I know it may take a minute to truly design a civilisation that meets your satisfaction so I don't expect you to come in with a fully plotted idea in the beginning. I simply wish to enjoy adventuring into someone's civilisation in a classic fantasy world.
As for my little librarian, as you can tell from the set up, his skills aren't limited to literacy. To give a little taste of his origins without spoiling, he came from a place where legendary stories and real history were a treated with religious respect. It's an unusual paradise where learning how to use weapons is as much about vicious practicality as it is about hypnotising elegance. The gods this librarian recognises are as ancient as the rivers and clouds. The land is called Banarad, and unless you make the treacherous journey there, you need to rely on its native people for first hand accounts on what it and its people are like. That's the kind of environment your new prisoner heralds from. He may be new to your lands, but he isn't defenceless. A librarian who needed to be muzzled and brought before your feet. Your most important decision is how you deal with him.
Will this be a pure enemies to lovers ordeal? Are you instantly intrigued or charmed by this usually deadly scholar? Do you allow him to work himself into your civilisation and engage a little courtly scandle? The choices are numerous and varied and I'm keen to discuss all your ideas.

As we near the end of another IPL cycle of 3 years, with MI lying in the weeds with a wooden spoon in their hand yet again for the second time in 3 years, I cant help but think of reasons why a champion franchise like MI would perform the way it did in this cycle. While some questions have obvious answers that we are all aware of, there are some questions to ponder. Some strategies need to be discussed to correct the course MI has taken in the past 3 years or so. With that in mind, I thought of analysing the only team in IPL I have followed since its inception. Feel free to add your opinion as no answer is right or wrong and everything can be improved upon no matter how much we agree or disagree with it.
The 2022-24 IPL journey can be divided into few sections that are separated by milestones (read decisions)

2024.05.18 12:50 koiRitwikHai Ciao, sai dove posso trovare luoghi legati a Gaspare Gorresio a Torino? (Hello, do you know where I can find places related to Gaspare Gorresio in Torino?)

Grazie.
PS: se possibile, rispondete in inglese.

Black tea is the most popular tea in the world. Unlike green tea, which is light and herbaceous, black tea has a richer and sweeter taste. As with fine wines, many variables combine to give each black tea its own unique flavor profile. These factors include the climate and altitude at which the Camellia sinensis plant was grown, how it was fertilized, the degree of oxidation that may have occurred during heat treatment, and how the leaves were cut and packaged.
Black tea flavors include smoky, earthy, spicy, nutty, citrus, caramel, fruity, and honey.
1. English Breakfast Tea
Drinking a mixture of strong black teas for breakfast is a British custom. The tradition began sometime in the mid-19th century. The exact selection of black teas used in breakfast tea blends can vary greatly, but popular options include Assam, Ceylon, and Kenya black teas. More expensive varieties use Keemun black tea from China, which has a slight taste of wine, fruit and pine.
English breakfast tea requires strong brewing, as is customary in England, and goes well with milk and sweeteners.
2. Earl Gray
Another world famous tea that first became popular in England. It is said that in the 1830s, British Prime Minister Charles Gray received a gift of black tea flavored with bergamot oil from the Chinese envoy.
Orange bergamot (Citrus bergamia) is a small citrus tree with winter flowers that grows primarily in Calabria, Italy. Bergamot oil imparts a bright, delicate, citrusy flavor with floral undertones that complements the bold and assertive character of black tea. Many commercial varieties today use artificial flavors instead of real bergamot. If you want to taste real Earl Grey, stick to high-quality organic blends that use only natural flavors.
Another good reason to drink Earl Gray tea is that, unlike most black teas, it contains antioxidants thanks to the addition of bergamot oil. The antioxidant (catechin) content is the main reason why green teas have received much more positive press than black teas over the years.
Antioxidants help get rid of free radicals in the body, which also helps support your immune system. With this tea, you may get the best of both the antioxidant properties of bergamot and the prebiotic properties of black tea. It’s a win-win combination!
Flavored with delicate notes of bergamot oil, Earl Gray is also the ideal base for delicious iced teas and lattes.
3. Assam Black Tea
Assam black tea is named after the Indian region. This tea is relatively new. Tea production in India began only about 200 years ago. In the 1830s, British business interests saw an opportunity to compete with Chinese tea producers, so they moved British tea production to India. Since then, Assam has become the world’s largest tea producing region.
Assam black tea grows primarily at or near sea level. The tropical climate and high rainfall, unique terroir, and processing methods give this variety of black tea a unique chocolate aftertaste. The taste can range from fresh, smoky, earthy, musky and strong to lighter with chocolate, cocoa or even sweet and spicy notes.
Assam tea is a common ingredient in tea blends, used to provide a stronger base and depth.
A cup of Assam tea can help strengthen the immune system. Black tea contains antioxidants that are beneficial for overall health. It also contains the highest levels of calcium, iron, magnesium and copper.
You can simply drink Assamese black tea or add honey and some nut milk.
4. Darjeeling Black Tea
Darjeeling tea can only be found in the highland town of Darjeeling in India, West Bengal. Some call Darjeeling black tea the “champagne of tea” for its delicate, fruity and floral notes.
Tea is unique in that the leaves can be processed in different ways, resulting in black, green, white or oolong tea.
However, the character of this black tea can vary depending on when it was picked.
Teas are sorted according to the size and quality of the tea leaves. Four categories of tea leaves are sorted: whole tea leaves, broken leaves, fan leaves and dust. Whole leaves are the highest grade, and dust is the lowest. Fannings are small particles of leaves that are used in tea bags, and tea dust is essentially the waste left behind by tea leaves. Tea Darjeeling first harvest: Harvested in the spring after the winter break. The color of the tea is light and pure. The tea leaves have a bright and distinct floral aroma. Due to their freshness and color, first flush teas are usually more expensive than others.
Second flush Darjeeling tea: has a dark amber color and a strong aroma, unlike first flush tea. The tea leaves have a purple tinge and may have a fruity flavor. Many tea testers around the world compare the taste of the second harvest with muscat grapes. The distinct aroma is due to a combination of unique weather, topography and plant types. Some tea connoisseurs prefer the second flush because of this unique aroma.
Third Flush Darjeeling Tea: After brewing, the resulting tea is dark or copper in color. Darjeeling’s autumn leaves are larger than other seasons. This type of tea usually costs slightly less than first and second flush teas.
Intermediate tea: Typically has characteristics similar to those of the first flush, but is often slightly lower in quality.
Darjeeling black tea is best served as is, without adding milk or sugar, and drunk in the morning. If you have a sensitive stomach, do not drink Darjeeling tea on an empty stomach.
5. Keemun Black Tea
Keemun is a special variety of black tea grown in Anhui Province in eastern China. He is also known as Qi Men Hong Cha. Compared to other black teas, it dries and oxidizes over a longer period of time.
This black tea is quite new, having been produced since 1875. An unfortunate civil servant from the Qimen region named Yu Ganchen decided to travel to Fujian Province, which is one of the most famous tea growing areas in China, to learn all about black tea production.
He used this knowledge to start producing black tea in his home region, where previously only green tea was produced. His new tea was a huge success in China and soon became famous in England. Even today it is a key ingredient in many English breakfast tea blends.
This organic loose leaf tea is made from medium sized rolled leaves. When brewed, it acquires a transparent bright red color. It has a soft, slightly roasted taste and a sweet, juicy aftertaste. Because of these qualities, kimuns are often compared to Burgundy wines.
The production of this tea requires a rather complex process, which is perhaps one of the reasons why this tea is so highly prized.
The leaves are collected only in spring and summer, and only the buds with the top two or three leaves are used. Even after harvesting, the leaves are sorted by hand and only the best are selected for further processing.
Keemun connoisseurs love it for its soft, complex aroma and taste, which includes notes of fruit, flowers, pine, tobacco and unsweetened cocoa.
You can enjoy it plain or with limited amounts of nut milk and honey
6. Yunnan (Yunnan Black Tea)
Yunnan black tea comes from the Yunnan province of China. Also known as “Dian Hong” (Dian is the short name for Yunnan province, “hong” means red, and when brewed it produces a coppery orange drink instead of the brown or black you might be used to). Fully oxidized tea grown high in the mountainous region of Linkang at an altitude of 1680-1900 m above sea level. Due to the highlands and mild climate, the growing season in the province is long, with harvesting occurring from March to November.
The Yunnan has a light smoky aroma and has layers of caramel and cocoa with a hint of pepper on the finish.
One thing that sets it apart from most other black teas is the high concentration of tender leaf buds known as “golden tips.”
It is recommended to use 3.5 g of tea per 200 ml of water and leave to infuse for 3 minutes. At this point, the drink will turn a deep dark red color and the room will be filled with a sweet, smoky aroma. It can also be drunk with milk.
7. Nilgiri
Nilgiri tea is grown in the southern Western Ghats, in the hills of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The word “Nilgiri” comes from Sanskrit, which means “blue hill”. Here, once every 7-12 years, the unique purple-blue flowers of Kurinji bloom and cover the landscape with bright colors.
Tea is grown at an altitude of 1000 to 2500 meters above sea level. Altitude, combined with cool air and moderate sun, slows the growth of tea plants, allowing the aromas in the leaves to intensify. This is why Nilgiri tea is known throughout the world as one of the most aromatic teas, slightly sweet, medium in body and containing hints of fruit.
These teas have a golden yellow color and a well-balanced taste. You may find them slightly spicy with a nutty aftertaste. This makes them ideal for making tea blends, so they can be drunk with sugar and cream.
There is Nilgiri frost tea, the leaves of which are collected in winter. This special tea has a pink and sweet taste, and many compare it to ice wine.
How to store tea
Tea is a food product and is subject to spoilage, like other products. The main enemies of tea are sunlight, oxygen, moisture and foreign odors. You won’t be poisoned by old tea, it will just be tasteless. During long-term storage, tea loses primarily its aroma. To preserve tea longer, it is stored in an airtight, opaque container, in a dry, dark room, away from any pungent substances.
In China, it is common to store tea packaged in sealed portion bags using a vacuum in the refrigerator at a temperature of +4°. This way you can preserve tea for up to 3 years.

Summary of President Charles Edward Merriam's First Term (May 4th, 1948 - February 10th, 1949) A House Divided Alternate Elections
Charles Edward Merriam, the 37th President of the United States, Official Presidential Portrait
The Poisoned Chalice
Upon taking the presidential oath of office after the resignation of President Alvin York, Charles Edward Merriam found himself at the helm of a rudderless ship. Civil unrest was at an all-time high due to mass protests against York’s preemptive nuclear strike and large-scale labor strikes, much of the cabinet had been left vacant by a wave of resignations following York’s controversial decision not to consult his own advisors on the decision, and an already uneasy economy had been thrown into chaos by the total obliteration of a major trading partner. Even the sky itself had visibly darkened while global temperatures dropped, bringing about cries of the end times being visited upon Earth for man’s folly. In this moment of national crisis, Merriam took to the airwaves with a radio address to the American people asking them to unite with him in a national effort for the first 100 days of his presidency to right the course of the country amidst the national crisis.
Moving with alacrity to fill the vacancies within his cabinet and bring his administration into full gear, Merriam leaned upon his network of academic contacts to appoint a ring of economic, industrial, and social science experts — Jacob Viner, Bessie Louise Pierce, George W. Taylor, and Leo Wolman — into several key cabinet positions. Similarly, rather than appoint a political operative as his Secretary of State or War, he instead chose to elevate career diplomat and acting Secretary of State Joseph Grew into his position permanently while promoting War Department General Counsel William Marbury Jr. to be Secretary of War. Finding both Secretary of the Navy James V. Forrestal and Secretary of Agriculture John Marvin Jones to be highly competent and sufficiently disentangled from the chaos of the York administration, Merriam requested that the pair remain in their positions. However, Postmaster General Thomas Perkins Henderson would not be so lucky, as Merriam distrusted his close ties to President York and felt the office was wracked by cronyism, thus requesting his immediate resignation to be replaced with former Louisiana Governor and highly regarded reformist Sam H. Jones. To round out his cabinet, Merriam appointed California Governor Earl Warren as his Attorney General due to Warren’s wealth of experience in suppressing syndicalist insurrectionists in his home state, as well as Delaware Senator and businessman J. Allen Frear to manage the Department of the Interior with an eye towards economizing a bloated department.

Secretary of State Joseph Grew, a defining member of the Merriam administration with his foreign policy expertise during the world’s darkest hour.
Calming a Roiling Sea
Believing that anxiety surrounding a national economy plagued by boundless problems was at the root of the national malaise that might yet inspire a resurgence of syndicalism, Merriam quickly moved to restore confidence for both consumers and businesses. As a first step to move past the combative relationships that President Hughes and York held with organized labor, Merriam invited newly minted American Federation of Labor President George Meany for a symbolic meeting to discuss labor issues and establish an informal political alliance to raise wages and working standards as a means to settle the persistent labor unrest. Thus, President Merriam and his Secretary of Labor George W. Taylor began applying the National Labor Arbitration Act to settle hundreds of strikes across the country resulting in a moderate nationwide increase in wage levels and the proliferation of employer-provided healthcare as a commonly provided benefit. Taylor even proved successful in earning the begrudging respect of Congress of Industrial Organizations President Walter Reuther’s respect despite the organization’s more explicitly confrontational approach to industrial relations.
Despite this success in the application of labor arbitration, Merriam’s ambition of comprehensive legislation to establish a formal system of corporatist economic structures was repeatedly frustrated by the inability to secure enough bipartisan support in the House of Representatives to pass several successive iterations of his proposals. Yet as a longtime proponent of executive power, Merriam was not entirely thwarted by this setback and notably issued an Executive Order forming the Office of National Research headed by MIT President Karl T. Compton and complemented by a number of figures in both the natural and social sciences to direct national research efforts towards answering pressing questions of the new atomic age. Perhaps the most significant of its achievements were the pioneering of new sanitation, public health, and antibiotic techniques to finally stamp out the bubonic plague epidemic that had persisted since the initial Japanese bioweapon attack. Furthermore, Speaker of the House Wright Patman was successful in passing a budget through the House substantially scaling back wartime spending and taxation in light of the transition of the United States military from a combat force to an occupation force abroad. Anticipating a corresponding decrease in inflation, Merriam worked with his Secretary of Commerce Leo Wolman to begin the process of relieving wartime price controls that had remained in place throughout the York administration while encouraging the development of private industrial codes of conduct for businesses to self-regulate prices.

Sewing A Tattered World
America was not the only country suffering in the aftermath of the Second World War. The decade-long war had wreaked havoc upon the entire world and left entire nations virtually leveled by bombs and depleted of their resources. American efforts at international reconstruction had been haphazard and largely left in the hands of private charities during the York administration, much to the consternation of its allies and the occupied peoples. Thus, out of a mixture of humanitarian reasons, a desire to restore America’s international reputation, and a calculation that such destruction could breed communist movements such as the syndicalist revolt that had embroiled the United States, Secretary of State Joseph Grew proposed a much more ambitious plan that would soon bear his name. With the strong support of President Merriam, Congress earmarked a staggering $15 billion with wide bipartisan support to be distributed to European governments for necessary imports of food and basic materials from the United States as well as for industrial investments to rebuild the European economy. An ancillary fund was likewise also established to support the reconstruction of China, which had been ravaged by brutal warfare with Imperial Japan. As a committed supporter of free trade, President Merriam also used the leverage of the Grew Plan to compel the recipients of the funding to lower trade barriers between one another and with the United States in order to stimulate international trade. The sole major holdout would be the United Kingdom, where Prime Minister Aneurin Bevan remained committed to an autarkic system of steep trade barriers outside the Imperial system since the country had suffered far less damage than its peers in the Second World War.
Another guiding principle of President Merriam’s approach to international reconstruction would be a wide-ranging program of technical assistance. With the country’s decades-long commitment to widely available public education and a sophisticated network of universities engaged in industrial research, the American economy had come to be regarded as the most technologically advanced in the entire world. Already under President Dewey, the United States had begun programs of sharing its technical expertise in production methods and industrial organization to China and the countries of Latin America. Thus, Merriam’s formalization of an Office for Technical Assistance under the Department of State was an extension of an already well-established practice. With support from personnel and agencies in the Departments of Labor and Commerce, the Office of Technical Assistance undertook a wide-ranging and sophisticated statistical analysis of European industries to identify weaknesses in productivity while arranging for large-scale observation visits by European industrial leaders as well as the collation and distribution of technical literature in order to disseminate best practices across continents. Following the initial success of the program in Europe over the first months of his term, Merriam proceeded with an extension of the program to developing nations in the Middle East and South Asia in order to modernize their economies as well.

Year Without Summer
While atomic weapons had been deployed several times throughout the Second World War to destroy French, Russian, and Japanese cities, they had never been used on the scale ordered by President Alvin York to destroy the German Empire. As a result of the simultaneous destruction of dozens of German cities in fiery infernos, the atmosphere of the planet itself became choked by a layer of ash and soot that demonstrably lowered global temperatures in the following months. With the effect coined as a “nuclear winter” by British chemist Samuel Glasstone, a world food supply already challenged by the disruptions of war experienced a dramatic shortfall in agricultural production sending many war-ravaged areas teetering into famine. However, this presented a unique opportunity for the United States, which had for decades struggled with chronic overproduction of agricultural products causing dim economic prospects for the nation’s farmers. Now, there was a ready market for the surplus in the United States that persisted even through the nuclear winter.
Though European governments were already using their Grew Plan funds to import American food products in large amounts, Secretary of Agriculture John Marvin Jones was determined to employ the powers of the federal government in assistance of this shift. Backed by a series of executive orders from President Merriam, Jones vastly expanded the neglected Populist-era Sub-Treasury system to grant easy credit and storage solutions to farmers who lacked sufficient capital to take advantage of the vastly increased demand for their product while also using wartime legislation to purchase eroded land for its rehabilitation and resale for food production by government experts. Much like the rest of the executive branch, at Merriam’s direction the Department of Agriculture also leaned into partnerships with dozens of agricultural colleges spread throughout the United States to collect and publish a corpus of literature on improved farming practices and fertilizer production techniques to further stimulate production.

New World Order
Having earned widespread popularity among the American public for his statesmanship at home and thus leaving the November elections with a decisive popular mandate, Merriam turned to the pressing issue of foreign affairs in the latter half of his term. In the chaos of the Second World War and its immediate aftermath, the powers of the Grand Alliance had failed to conclusively agree on the structures of the post-war world. Even after the destruction of the German Empire, which had been the largest obstacle in the effort to conclude new international agreements, debate raged on what form these would take as the world federalist movement took root across the globe. In order to lay the foundation of future global cooperation, Merriam began by reviving the institutions of the Hague Treaty that had been rendered inoperative by the withdrawal of participation by several countries and subsequent outbreak of the Second World War. While the Permanent Court of International Arbitration would be restored largely unchanged from its original construction, the International Monetary Fund would be greatly transformed due to President Merriam’s influential support for John Maynard Keynes’s proposal to formulate a supranational currency called “bancor” to be the unit of account for an International Clearing Union tasked with regulating international trade.
While many nationalists and isolationists decried Merriam’s move towards the internationalization of monetary policy, the circle of Atlanticists within the party led by Vice President Edward J. Meeman was urging him to go even further towards world government. Compelled by a promise made to the Atlanticist faction during his party’s National Convention, President Merriam authorized the summoning of an international conference to discuss the concept of an Atlantic Union between the western democratic countries of the world. However, where many expected that Merriam might appoint a coterie of apathetic diplomats to undermine the movement, the President instead shockingly sent a delegation filled with committed Atlanticists led by New York Senator Grenville Clark, Tennessee Senator Estes Kefauver, and the proposal’s first author Clarence Streit to Brussels for the conference, much to the outrage of opponents of world federalism within his party. After weeks spent deliberating the minutiae of the Atlantic Union, the conference emerged just before the holiday season with a proposed constitution and hundreds of pages of documentation surrounding the historical precedents and contemporary reasoning behind the proposal to electrify the debate surrounding a world government.

God’s Instrument or War Criminal?
The most controversial question hanging over the term of President Charles Edward Merriam was the fate of former President Alvin York. To many Americans, York had committed a crime against humanity comparable to those against which they had fought against for a decade and the incident ignited a debate surrounding presidential authority to deploy nuclear weapons. Throughout the initial months of his presidency, Merriam dodged questions surrounding the President and declined to make substantial public comment aside from occasional suggestions that the President had sole command over the United States military. At Merriam’s private urging, Speaker of the House Wright Patman also squashed suggestions that a President could still be impeached after leaving office. Likewise, Merriam directed the Justice Department not to open a federal prosecution against York and thus leaving the ailing former President’s case in legal limbo. Speaking out more strongly after his successful reelection campaign, Merriam clarified that while he found the act personally abhorrent it remained a legal exercise of the President’s powers as commander-in-chief and that as the victims were nationals of another country there was no basis for either a prosecution or a pardon in the name of crimes against the United States.
Beyond just the conduct of the President himself, the atomic bombing of Germany brought with it new concern around the governance of nuclear weapons. Believing that tight-lipped military control over nuclear weapons under wartime authority was a large factor in York’s ability to unilaterally strike Germany, the Senate’s sole independent Brien McMahon led the charge to place nuclear weapons and energy development under the control of an independent civilian commission appointed by both the President and the legislative officers. Though his bill died in committee, it inspired the Federalist Reform Party to counter with their own bill introduced by Kentucky Senator Andrew J. May replacing McMahon’s proposed commission with a board to be dominated by military officers exclusively appointed by the President. While the Federalist Reform majority in the Senate quickly passed the May bill over an attempted filibuster by McMahon, the bill came to a screeching halt in the House of Representatives where the opposition parties unified to fiercely oppose its passage. With Congress at an impasse, President Merriam issued executive orders continuing the status quo of the wartime project board that had been initiated by President Howard Hughes.

Independent Connecticut Senator Brien McMahon, who took leadership of the fight for civilian control over nuclear energy

Note: Not strictly bound by Merriam’s term, the following sections are meant to summarize the state of the world after the conclusion of the Second World War.
The Red Stars of Europe
Throughout the decade-spanning Second World War, the United Kingdom had been under the leadership of Conservative Prime Minister Duff Cooper. In order to maintain control against the irascible anti-war opposition led by Labour’s Oswald Mosley, Cooper had resorted to the royal authority of King Edward VIII to unilaterally bring the country into the war and cancel elections throughout its duration. While he had been successful in prosecuting the war to victory and securing the downfall of Mosley’s control over the Labour Party, when Cooper was finally forced to call elections at the war’s end he found voters profoundly unsympathetic to his accomplishments and his Tory government was defeated in a staggering landslide by the Labour Party. Thus, King Edward was reluctantly forced to appoint the Labour Party leader, Aneurin “Nye” Bevan, as the Prime Minister of the country. As an ally to former party leader Oswald Mosley, Bevan quickly embarked on the domestic implementation of the “Mosley Memorandum” to nationalize wide stretches of the British economy while also pursuing a massive expansion of the British welfare state. Following the atomic bombing of the German Empire, Bevan forcefully attacked the wanton use of weapons of mass destruction in a surprise attack and relations remained frosty even after York’s resignation as President Merriam cut off the United Kingdom from any knowledge sharing regarding nuclear power and weaponry.
Yet even the radicalism of Nye Bevan paled in comparison to that of the Spanish Republic, where a blossoming social and economic revolution was years underway. Following the victory of the leftist Republic against Nationalist forces in the country’s civil war, thanks in no small part to the decisive support of President Frank J. Hayes, agriculture was rapidly collectivized by the Spanish government while a combination of state support and syndicalist initiative led to over 75% of the industrial economy being brought under worker control. Taking inspiration from the writings and political efforts of American President John Dewey, the Spanish also imported many of his principles of progressive child-centric education while undertaking the community construction of centers of adult learning woven into forums of political debate. However, standing in stark contrast to the system of government on the mainland would be the so-called “Spanish State” existing in Spain’s African colonies. With their heavy conservative military presence, the colonies had formed a powerbase for the Spanish Nationalists and thus served as a natural place of refuge after their defeat in the war, while the socialist Republican government held little interest in reconquering a system of colonies that it found morally repugnant. Thus, the colonies became the host of a rival government and ruthless colonial state that came under the leadership of Falangist Agustin Aznar after he successfully orchestrated the murder of his political rivals to become the Jefe Nacional.

Prime Minister Aneurin Bevan of the United Kingdom, the sole power offering a serious challenge to American hegemony over the post-war world.
Integralism Lives?
After the surrenders of the Kingdoms of France and Italy during the Second World War, the Allied powers were too pressed for manpower in their colossal struggle against Russia and Japan in the East to administer a full military occupation. Thus, instead the administration of Howard Hughes accepted the continuation of their governments so long as they cooperated with American occupation authorities. As a result, Italian Integralism and its monarchy would continue under the auspices of General Pietro Badoglio who was vested by King Victor Emmanuel III and the Grand Council of Fascism as Italy’s new prime minister after the downfall of Benito Mussolini. However, Badoglio’s position would become increasingly unstable after the large-scale effort of the German Empire to fund and arm leftist Italian insurgents and increasingly dependent upon the United States occupation forces for support to avert their overthrow. While France would likewise retain its newly crowned King Henri VI, his political strategy would be markedly different from that of the Italians. Believing that the monarchist right would have no choice but to support him, Henri appointed socialist Vincent Auriol as his Prime Minister and issued a new liberal constitution to endear the political left to him as well. Final peace treaties with both countries, forced to be renegotiated after the destruction of the German Empire, would not yet be concluded by the end of President Merriam’s first term though the recognition of separatist movements in Brittany and Corsica was viewed as an implicit precondition by the American government.
As the political and military leadership of the German Empire had been devastated by the atomic bombings, the continuance of the Kaiserreich was not only seen as undesirable by President Alvin York but also simply impractical. Although York would not be able to oversee the country past its initial occupation, President Merriam held much the same opinion and negotiated the de jure abolition of the German Empire alongside the British and divided the country into two zones of occupation. Though relying on the expertise of the limited number of German experts who were both still alive and willing to cooperate with the occupation authorities, much of the day-to-day administration of the occupation zones would be carried out by the military forces of the occupying powers. Yet while the occupying forces made great strides in repairing the utterly destroyed nations and stabilizing its food supply, the occupation faced never before seen challenges with enormous incidence rates of cancer and a newly identified “atomic bomb disease” with poorly understood symptoms and little understanding of its treatment.

Blood Tide of the East
After Russia’s humiliating defeat in the Russo-Japanese War of 1934-1935, the country slipped into a dark period of brutal dictatorship at the hands of Anastasy Vonsyatsky and Ivan Solonevich. Yet few could have imagined that the horror could grow worse. The employment of strategic bombing against its crucial oil supply, the nuclear bombing of several of its cities, and worst of all an enormous anthrax attack targeted at its food supply caused the disintegration of Russia into famine and anarchy. As the powers of the Grand Alliance had declared victory and withdrew their troops from active fighting upon the surrender of Andrew Vlasov’s warlord band to western forces, the turmoil in Russia remained raging throughout President Merriam’s term with little outside intervention. Forces ranged from the claimed Romanov regent Mikhail Drozdovsky to the classical Integralist Boris Savinkov to the bloodthirsty racialist Bronislav Kaminski and dozens more in between fighting for the desiccated scraps of the once mighty country.
Ever vigilant on the frontier of this anarchy was the Reichskommissariat Muskowien, the former German puppet state instated by the Kaiser to facilitate the colonization of occupied Russian lands by German settlers. After its Reichskommissar was killed during the nuclear attack while visiting Berlin, his secretary Erich Koch seized control alongside a junta of military officers proclaiming the Reichskommissariat as a haven for the German people and embarking on a program of ethnic cleansing of the local Slavic population. Fearing that a military response would not only require another costly and unpopular war in Europe but also embroil the United States in the Russian frontier, President Merriam opted to continue the York administration’s position of withholding recognition from the Reichskommissariat while instead extending American influence in Eastern Europe under the auspices of his newly formed Office of Strategic Services.
With the German puppet governments in the Baltics, Poland, and Ukraine deeply unpopular and dependent on German support, their governments quickly collapsed under American and British influence leading to the establishment of new governments in each of the nations. Taking inspiration from the British program to unify the three Baltic nations under a single Baltic Union, President Merriam undertook a nation-building program of his own to attempt to unify Poland, Ukraine, and Romania into a single federation. However, the project remained stalled throughout his term due to a lack of enthusiasm from the member countries. Meanwhile, in an accord with the countries of the Grand Alliance, President Merriam and Secretary of State Joseph Grew took to settling the geopolitical situation of the Balkans. With the restoration of the Tsardom of Bulgaria already settled and Greece still preoccupied by civil war, the chief question would be the status of the former Triune. Striving for a balance between the competing claims of Austria and Hungary which had spiraled the world into war ten long years before, Grew negotiated the formation of a Danubian Confederation to replace the former Triune with substantial autonomy granted to the Czech, Slovak, Slovene, Hungarian, Croatian, Triestine, and Austrian states composing it but unifying them with a common citizenship and foreign policy.

The ruins of what was once a Russian home, a testament to the country’s seemingly interminable anarchy.
Self-Determination For Whom?
Over the course of the Second World War, British and American forces had come to occupy virtually all of the vast continent of Africa and with the end of the war it fell upon them to oversee its fate. With the recent independence of the United States of the Congo under President Alvin York serving as an example, both President Charles Edward Merriam and British Prime Minister Aneurin Bevan were committed to the eventual decolonization of the African continent but they also agreed that the bulk of the diverse African peoples needed further “instruction” on democratic governance and western culture before being granted independence. Thus, the colonial system of rule remained largely unchanged on the continent, though German colonies would be transferred to the United Kingdom as trust territories and French and Italian colonies remained occupied until the settlement of a final peace treaty. The sole exception came in the German colony of Tanganyika, where former German Ambassador to the United Kingdom Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck escaped the destruction of his home in Bremen through a chance visit to his former Askari soldiers and worked with a group of veterans to proclaim a biracial Republic of Tanganyika in the aftermath of the German Empire’s destruction. Recalling Lettow-Vorbeck’s famous guerilla warfare campaign in the First World War, both the United Kingdom and the United States begrudgingly recognized this new African Republic.
Though the British were slow to release their colonies in Africa, the immense pressure building up within India could not be contained any longer as the Indian National Congress refused to tolerate the continuation of the home rule status quo. Thanks in large part to the close personal relationship of Prime Minister Bevan and Indian nationalist leader Jawaharlal Nehru, negotiations proceeded smoothly albeit without significant consultation of Muslim authorities that Nehru had clashed with previously. In the final agreement, India was granted independent Dominion status within the British Empire as a united polity and quickly forced the remaining princely states to comply. Under pressure of a possibly violent revolt in Burma, Bevan also pressed for an act to give independence to the Union of Burma soon thereafter. Even less consent from the colonizing power was required for the Indochinese Federation under the leadership of Ho Chi Minh, which had already successfully cast off both French rule and a later Japanese invasion. Though cautious of Ho Chi Minh’s socialist principles, President Merriam and Secretary Grew remained concerned about the more dangerous Marxist-Hansenist opposition in the country and decided to recognize his leadership to bolster his position against the radicals. This anti-colonialist streak would also extend itself to Indonesia, where American troops were instructed not to turn the country over to the former Dutch colonial administrators and instead support the independence movement to foster a loyal American ally in Southeast Asia.

An independence procession in the newly formed Dominion of India.
Democracy in the Far East
Ever since the fateful day in 1939 when the United States declared war upon Japan, the Tiger of the East had become entrenched in the minds of the American people as their mortal enemy. Yet even despite cries for the execution of Emperor Hirohito and the visitation of revenge upon the Japanese people among the public, cooler heads prevailed in the State Department. The initial stages of Japan’s occupation were overseen by President Alvin York, who magnanimously saw Japan as a country that ought to be reformed rather than punished. Pressing for the shattering of its culture of militarism, the installation of structures of democracy, and even the Christianization of the nation, York’s program for the occupation proved massively influential for the future state of the country. Yet it would be President Charles Edward Merriam, eager to draw down United States military commitments, who would finish the process and finalize the treaty with Japan. Among the provisions of the treaty were the independence of Hawaii as a republic under American influence, the annexation of several Pacific islands including the Ryukyu Islands to serve as American naval installations, the placement of the remaining Pacific islands into trust territories, and the total demilitarization of Japan under a democratic system.
The presidency of Tasker H. Bliss had ushered in a special relationship between the United States and China that had persisted for the next twenty years. Yet under President Charles Edward Merriam, it had begun to fray. Upon hearing reports of American aid dollars being embezzled by the Chiang Kai-Shek administration for lavish personal corruption and believing Chiang to be a fundamentally self-interested and unreliable ally, Merriam quickly soured upon the Chinese Premier. Yet with the death of Vice Premier Feng Yuxiang, the opposition to Chiang remained too scattered for there to be any viable alternative. Thus, Merriam began maneuvering to install a set of new East Asian allies to reduce the monolithic power of China in the region. Chief among these was the Republic of Manchuria, which had been declared by a multi-ethnic group of local leaders seeking to avoid Chinese domination and given patronage by both Presidents York and Merriam. A further spite to Chiang would come with President Merriam’s support of the declaration of Taiwanese independence by Lei Chen, as the island had remained occupied by United States Marines after the end of the war. Despite these affronts, tensions between China and the United States were somewhat assuaged by American support for the return of French Yunnan, British Canton, Japanese Fujian, and Japanese Shandong to the Chinese Republic.

A woman voting in Japan’s first free and fair elections in decades.
World Revolution, of Two Sorts
During the Great Depression, the Dominion of Newfoundland found itself in total collapse and was forced to surrender its independence back to its colonial overlord in the United Kingdom. Yet the war years remained hard for the Dominion and its people remained deeply unsatisfied with its governmental arrangement. As the concept of the Atlantic Union spread through the world with the impending end of the Second World War, a local movement under the leadership of Chesley Crosbie began preaching for a declaration of independence and subsequent application for United States statehood as a demonstration of support for the Atlanticist concept. Though initially dismissed as a fringe movement, a rapid growth of support led the Atlantic Union Party to carry independence to victory in a 1948 referendum. A subsequent victory in the first elections of the Dominion brought the Atlantic Union Party into power and it made its application for American statehood shortly thereafter. Once again angering the anti-Atlanticist section of the party, President Merriam urged that statehood be introduced as a joint resolution of the House and Senate, which ensured its passage even despite the opposition of a critical bloc of Senators who may have made a regular treaty ratification impossible. Yet a similar attempt at statehood for the island of Sicily would be blocked by Merriam, who argued that the referendum used for its justification was illegitimate due to an opposition boycott.
Long suffering under the neo-colonialism of their former colonial masters in France and a newer clique of German elites dominating the local economy, the nation of Haiti became a hotbed for the ideology of Marxism-Hansenism, which preached a violent and permanent world revolution to secure control of the means of production under the democratic management of the workers. After succeeding in its own revolution to overthrow the capitalist class, Haiti became a haven for Hansenists across the Americas seeking to plot their own revolutions by supporting them with revolutionary praxis, arms, and propaganda. After the outbreak of a revolution in Cuba, President Merriam recognized the threat that Haiti posed to the stability of the Americas and ordered the imposition of trade sanctions to strangle the suspected flow of funds and materiel from American Hansenists to the island. Furthermore, Secretary of State Joseph Grew orchestrated a vote in the International Association of American States to expel revolutionary Haiti from the organization due to its support for world revolution and undermining the government of other member states.

2024.05.17 22:28 arethion Theory - Lucky 38 is a Spaceship

Lucky 38 is a Spaceship.
Whilst roaming the Mojave, in a Jet induced state of mind, I noticed how the famous Lucky 38 vaguely resembles a spaceship. So I got to thinking, what if it actually is? So then I got to digging. I began asking questions. Why is the "casino" so shrouded in mystery? Why so many different layers of security for the strip? Why is no one allowed inside? Why is it the only building in the strip, to be comprised almost completely out of metal (inside and out)?
These questions may seem crazy, stupid even, at first. Mr. House, himself has stated that he wants to rebuild the jewel of humanity. That, you might think, is the why to all my questions. Of course he needs the NCR, the families and his army of securitrons to protect the strip. He's a business man, money is his bottom line. What better place to be in contact with money, than New Vegas.
Though I'd retort, what is he using his money for? The only place we know he's spending his money on is protection, and the only place that he's protecting is the strip - the home to the closed off, mysterious, Lucky 38. It makes no sense to be in this constant loop of profit, and paying security, with no further goals of expansion or expenditure. Mr. House has explicitly stated he has no desire or care for what goes on outside of The Strip.
Some might even argue, he has little care as to what is going on WITHIN The Strip. He's barely in contact with the NCR and the three families. You hear this sentiment echoed by the main players within The Strip. He's leaving them all in the dark, about something.
I would argue that he has the capability to make, at least, Nevada a "better place for humanity". But he does not care to do so, his intentions are blatently elsewhere. He uses the NCR to control Hoover Dam, but siphons 5% of the energy produced, towards the strip, as apart of their accord.
Mr. House's intentions towards space travel and colonisation, does not even need to be speculated on. He reveals that his end game IS to get people heading for the stars, within a century. THIS is why he needs so many layers of protection, it is not to preserve the New Vegas Strip and it's inhabitants. He's been biding his time, completing the inner-workings of the Lucky 38. Getting it functionally ready to begin space travel.
He's betting on the Legion's return being the end of the NCR. This is why he's so desperate to get the Platinum Chip, to upgrade his own personal securitron army. He no longer wishes to be reliant on the NCR and the families to protect the Lucky 38. It explains his sudden desperation to get complete and utter independence of the strip.
Why is no one allowed within the Lucky 38? He has a legion of Securitrons protecting it inside, and outside. What is he so afraid of people stumbling upon? What is he so insecure about, that he must uphold complete security within his own building.
Mr. House is a business man. He corners markets. What better way to gain a monopoly, than to be the first person there.
The shape of the Lucky 38 even gives it the potential to be used as a space-faring craft. Let alone the materials it is made out of. It is equipped with the most advanced technological systems on earth. Yet due to it's secrecy, we the players, probably have not been able to explore it in it's entirety - due to ingame restrictions. It may have multiple levels underground, so we may only be seeing the fuselage. There may be engines, boosters etc, way beneath the ground.
But hey, maybe i've been taking too much Jet. Let me know what you think.
tl;dr - Mr. House actually doesn't care about the strip, is using the NCR to protect the Lucky 38, has been spending the last 200+ years finishing/preparing the Lucky 38 for space travel.

2024.05.17 19:04 chronic314 Anarchy Works: "What about education?"

https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/peter-gelderloos-anarchy-works#toc27
Education has long been a priority of anarchist and other revolutionary movements around the world. But even if people completely neglected the organization of education after the revolution, that would still be an improvement over the patriotic, degrading, manipulative, and mind-numbing forms of education sponsored by the nation-state. Like everyone else, children are capable of educating themselves, and are motivated to do so in the proper setting. But public schools rarely offer that setting, nor do they educate the students on topics of immediate usefulness, like surviving childhood, expressing emotions healthily, developing their unique creative potentials, taking charge of their own health or caring for sick people, dealing with gender violence, domestic abuse, or alcoholism, standing up to bullies, communicating with parents, exploring their sexuality in a respectful way, finding a job and apartment or making do without money, or other skills young people need to live. In the few classes that teach useful hands-on skills—nearly always electives—students are "tracked." Girls learn how to cook and sew in Home Ec, boys likely to go on to blue collar jobs learn wood-working in Shop. It is safe to say that most boys finish high school ignorant of how to cook or patch up their clothes, and most girls and future white collar workers graduate not knowing how to fix a toilet, mount an electrical installation, repair a bicycle or a car engine, plaster a wall, or work with wood. And in the computer and technology classes, the fact that the students often know more than the teachers is a clear indication that something is wrong with this form of education. Schools do not even teach kids the skills they need for the crappy jobs they will end up working. Most of this, people teach themselves, or learn among friends and peers—that is to say, the school of life is already anarchistic.
The most important lessons consistently taught by schools under the state are to obey arbitrary authority, to accept the imposition of other people's priorities on our lives, and to stop daydreaming. When children start school, they are self-guided, curious about the world they live in, and believe everything is possible. When they finish, they are cynical, self-absorbed, and used to dedicating forty hours of their week to an activity they never chose. They are also likely to be miseducated about a number of things, perhaps unaware that a majority of human societies throughout history have been egalitarian and stateless, that the police have only recently become an important and supposedly necessary institution, that their government has a track record of torture, genocide, and repression, that their lifestyles are destroying the environment, that their food and water are poisoned, or that there is a history of resistance waiting to be uncovered in their very own town.
This systematic miseducation is hardly surprising, given the history of public schools. Though public schools developed gradually from an array of precedents, the regime of Otto von Bismarck is widely credited with first establishing a national public school system. The purpose was to prepare youth for careers in the bureaucracy or military, discipline them, instill them with patriotism, and indoctrinate them in the culture and history of a German nation that had not previously existed. The school system was one of the modernizations that allowed a collection of bickering provinces, some of them practically feudal, to form a state that could threaten the rest of the continent—and large parts of Africa—within a generation.
In response, a number of anarchist theorists set out to design non-hierarchical schools in which teachers would serve as aides helping the students learn and explore their chosen subjects. Some of these anarchist experiments in education in the US were called Modern Schools, on the model of Spanish anarchist Francisco Ferrer's Escuela Moderna. These schools helped educate thousands of students, and played important roles in the anarchist and labor movements. In 1911, shortly after Ferrer's execution in Spain, the first Modern School in the US was founded in New York City by Emma Goldman, Alexander Berkman, Voltairine de Cleyre, and other anarchists. A number of famous artists and writers helped teach there, and pupils included the artist Man Ray. It lasted for several decades, eventually moving out of New York City during a period of intense political repression, and became the center of a rural commune.
More recently, anarchists and other activists in the US have organized "free schools." Some of these are temporary, ad hoc classes, while some are fully organized schools. One, the Albany Free School, has existed for over 32 years in inner-city Albany. This anti-authoritarian school is committed to social justice as well as education—it offers sliding scale tuition and turns no one away for financial reasons. Most experimental schools are only accessible to the elite, but the student body of the Albany Free School is diverse, including many inner-city kids from poor families. The school has no curriculum or compulsory classes, operating according to the philosophy "'Trust children and they will learn.' Because when you entrust kids with their own so-called 'education'—which is not a thing after all, but rather an ever-present action—they will learn continually, each in their own way and rhythm." The Free School teaches children up to 8th grade, and has recently opened a high school, the Harriet Tubman Free School. The school organizes a small organic farm in the city which provides another important learning opportunity for students. Students also work with community service projects such as soup kitchens and daycare centers. Despite financial and other limitations, they have succeeded admirably.
The MST, the Landless Workers' Movement in Brazil, has focused ardently on education in the settlements they have created on occupied land. Between 2002 and 2005, the MST claims to have taught over 50,000 landless workers how to read; 150,000 children are enrolled in 1,200 different schools they have built on their settlements, and they have also trained over one thousand educators. The MST schools are free from state control, so communities have the power to decide what their children are taught and can develop alternative methods of education as well as curricula free of the racist, patriotic, and capitalist values that are part and parcel of public education. The Brazilian government complains that children in the settlements are taught that genetically modified crops pose a risk to human health and the environment, which suggests that they get a much more relevant and accurate education than their peers in the state run schools. MST schools in the settlements focus on literacy and use the methods of Paulo Freire, who developed the "pedagogy of the oppressed." In São Paulo the MST has built itself an autonomous university which trains farmers nominated by the individual settlements. Rather than teaching, for example, agribusiness, as a capitalist university would, they teach family agriculture with a critique of the exploitative and environmentally destructive techniques prevalent in contemporary agriculture. For other technical courses the MST also helps people get educations in public universities, though they often win the collaboration of leftwing professors to offer more critical lessons of a higher caliber, even enabling them to design their own courses. They emphasize in all these forms of education that it is the responsibility of the students to use what they learn for their community and not for individual profit.
The Movimiento Campesino de Santiago de Estero, MOCASE, is a group of farmers, many of them Quechua, with similarities and connections to the MST. Beginning as a group of farmers fighting for land in the face of expansion by forestry companies from the Global North, they now number 8,000 families in 58 communities active in a broad range of struggles. Working together with the Universidad Transhumante, they set up a Farmers School that helps farmers learn the skills necessary for self-management. The students also learn to teach, so they can help train other farmers. The Universidad Transhumante is interesting in its own right. It is a popular education university, also inspired by Freire, that organized a year-long caravan to 80 cities around Argentina, to present popular education workshops and learn about the problems people face. Outside of the control of the state, education need not be a static, fixed thing. It can be a tool of empowerment, as people are taught how to teach, so they can pass on the lessons they learn rather than being permanently dependent on a class of professional educators. It can be a tool of liberation, as people learn about authority and resistance, and study how to take control over their own lives. It can be a caravan, a circus, as people travel across a country and instead of bringing caged spectacles they bring new ideas and techniques. And it can be a tool for survival, as oppressed peoples learn about their histories and prepare for their futures.
In 1969, Native American activists, organizing under the name "Indians of All Nations," occupied the abandoned Alcatraz island, citing an ignored US law guaranteeing that indigenous people had a right to occupy any land the settler nation abandoned. For six months, the occupation numbered in the hundreds, and though most left because of a government blockade, the occupation ultimately lasted for 19 months, revitalizing indigenous culture and rejecting colonial control. During the early period, the Indian occupiers organized a school that taught indigenous history and culture from their own perspective, without the racist propaganda that filled the textbooks of the government's schools. For the duration of their occupation, they used education as a means of cultural renewal, whereas it had previously been used against them to destroy their identity and conscript the survivors of the genocide into the civilization that had colonized them.
