2024.05.19 05:16 H2O_pete [Request] how long was the foot in 1683 England and what is a half quarter in respect to length

This comes from a 340-year-old book that I’ve been reading. It may seem simple because the text says half-quarter which just sounds like an eighth, yeah I’d be inclined to assume that as well. Unfortunately I have gotten about 100 pages into it and it uses the word eighth for a measurement… much to my dismay. "150 Nonpareil (6pt) to make 1 foot gives 12.5 Nonpareil for an inch, and consequently 25 scabbords for an inch; so by proportion, 15 scabbords and 1/3 part of a scabbords, gives 5/8 part of an inch." so it might not and don’t even get me started on trying to figure out the foot Which I also kind of need to figure that out to figure this out so is greatly appreciated. The text comes from “Moxon’s Mechanick Exercises” which has a table for how many pieces of the of a certain point size fit in a “foot” problem is that the foot is 12.5 modern inches plus or minus 5/16” please I’m at wits end with this godforsaken measurement. it’s the same issue as trying to make something from an old recipe. We don’t know the size of the cups and you don’t know what kind of eggs they were using so when you try to re-create Napoleon’s cake, it doesn’t work. Got a love that standardization, THANK YOU NIST.

I have a Mongoose Switchback and am concerned that the bottom bracket is too large in length to fit a BAFANG mid drive motor. I measured the bracket as 3 inches which seems just out of range for the average motor. Anyone have experience with this bike or issue?

I hate hats, I’m required to wear one at work so I’ve been wearing this one for a year. Took it home to wash this weekend and it looked off, I measured and the patch is 1/4 inch shifted to the left as you’re looking at the picture. Still gonna wear it, but now I’m aware of how goofy I look. Also now noticing that my picture looks like a penis repping bear grease, sorry Clay.

2024.05.19 04:09 476b cage topper

cage topper
Here are the measurements and more pictures of my tank topper in case anyone else wants to make one. It's based off one in one of the tutorials linked in this sub, but that one doesnt seem to have very in depth instructions, so I had to kind of design and figure it out myself.
All wood is 1x2" pine lumber. [note: 1x2" lumber is actually only 3/4" x 1 1/2"; make sure to factor your measurements into this]. You will need 4 eight foot boards for this project; try to pick out boards that are straight. Wire is quarter inch chicken wire, one 5ft roll should work. Wood glue and 1 1/2" long nails [note: nails might split your wood, not sure how to circumvent this] Wood was cut with a hand saw which is why its... not perfect.
I measured it fit inside the rim of a 20g tank and be about as tall; but this can be remeasured to fit any sized tank.
Steps: I did the sides first. Put some glue on and then nails to keep it together. Long middle pieces. Two extra long pieces along the top makes it strong enough to put things on (or hold cats). Everything is kind of held together with the chicken wire a little bit. Staple gun and small screws and washers hold the wire on. One long piece of wire mesh to go along from left to back to right, this limits gaps and edges. one piece attached on top. Make sure doors cover your entire front!, and limit gaps. Bar in the middle is removable so I can get bigger things in and out. Slide latch. Magnetic cabinet hold. Make sure any gaps you have are small enough that a mouse cant get through. Mine don't seem interested in chewing their way out. Wire mesh allows you to attach things much more easy to the sides and top. Mine has a towel on the top which makes it kind of dark inside for no real reason. ummm measurements in the last slide!!! and let me know if you have any questions!! i know this isnt the best tutorial but this was my first project i designed, measured, and built myself so im really proud of it!!!!! mouse in pic 4 is miss pigeon :)

2024.05.19 03:19 RussianLoveMachine Full Kitchen Remodel Layout Help [Long post]

The current layout in a fully gutted kitchen below: https://imgur.com/nGIH4C7
Two tricky parts to note. One, the load bearing wall that we can't shorten. Plus the corner windows that create the "rounded" top left corner start about 24 inches off the floor so you can't just put a countertop across them without bricking up the window. We are getting new windows in the kitchen so not the end of the world, but this is a brick house so more $ to change window sizes. Will mention, the closet is the only one we have for the front (not pictured but right below dining room) and back entrance, so we want to avoid getting rid of it.
We would like a large island since we don't want to re-build another breakfast nook. My wife also wants a more walk in butlers pantry (+/- dry bar in between the kitchen and dining room). There is an exhaust fan in the laundry area, so I think storing things in there shouldn't be bad. My wife is ok with closing the passage between the kitchen and dinning, but I think it's a bad idea.
Here was our initial leading layout after much deliberation. It would extent the width of the laundry/pantry by 1.5 ft (7.5 width). We would brick up the left most window on the top wall. Although, I just realized we can just shorten the window so a cabinet goes under it, but it would be close to the stove though (not sure if good idea). Btw, it was my idea to put the sink by the window rather than island because I do the dishes most often and I don't like interrupting an island. Each block is 1x1ft btw if you want approximate measurements. https://imgur.com/OeI9dIc
We talked to our contractor and he felt that bricking up a window is a bad idea (we didn't ask about just resizing to be honest). He felt that we are planning too large of a pantry given our kitchen size. He is probably right, we are simple cooks and can't say it is our passion. He recommended something more simple and cheaper (we asked him to always give us those options). It keeps the pantry/laundry width the same at 6ft, but blocks off the entrance to dinning: https://imgur.com/o1CCDFd
He is probably right about the size. However, I really don't like closing up the extra entrance to dining from kitchen and my wife kind of likes our original layout. We came up with a mix of the two (although we made the closet smaller and decided to stack the washer and dryer). This saves the pass through, gives my wife that little wet/prep bar before the dining room, and the fridge is in a slightly better spot. However, we are confused about what to do with this empty ~6' 6" x 9' 9" to the left of the kitchen and above the back door. https://imgur.com/GL0BVv3
Love to get some feedback. Thoughts on pantry/laundry size. Thoughts on layout of the 3 options we came up with so far. Perhaps you can recommend something completely different?

I need help building a base for my desk
Hello, I’ve recently been trying to build a desk for my and I've been trying to decide whether to build the base separately or to connect the parts onto the desktop. The desktop is pine plywood, measuring 55 inches long, 23 inches wide, and 19 mm thick. The boards I want to connect to the plywood are 45 inches long, 2.5 inches wide, and, I believe, 23 mm thick. I was thinking I could clamp the boards to the plywood and drill some screws into the plywood and the board below, using some wood glue, and then screw the legs into the boards. I think this is a decent idea, but I don’t know entirely if it’s a good idea, if anyone has a better idea of what I could do. That would help me a lot!
The picture I’ve provided is close to what I want to do minus the other two boards and the side board is too long which I will shorten later.

2024.05.19 02:43 ArtisenalMoistening Haven’t lost weight in almost 2 months

I am tracking literally every food that goes into my mouth - and not just by appearance, but I weigh and measure everything. I only drink seltzer water. I always stay under 30 carbs (most days under 20). I go to the gym 5 days a week - 3 days of StrongLifts and 2 of cardio. I have noticed that my clothes started fitting better after the first week, which is nice, but I feel like I should have maybe actually lost some weight, especially considering that I have quite a bit to lose.
It is extremely frustrating to be doing everything right and not seeing the scale change at all. In addition, I feel like I’m actually getting weaker at the gym. I haven’t been able to increase my lifting amounts in several weeks because I fail when I try. I actually can’t do regular overhead press at all anymore, and have to use a machine. I use an elliptical for warm ups, cool down, and cardio days, and my legs feel weak and heavy the whole time. I recently upped my protein intake after realizing it was fairly low, and also changed my calorie intake for strenuous activity where I had it as sedentary before. I don’t eat back my exercise calories. I also just got a measuring tape so I can see if I’m still losing inches after the initial water drop that made my clothes fit better, because the frustration of the scale not moving is making me want to give up.
So all this rantiness aside, for anyone who has experienced this, how did you get past it? Do you maybe see something that I’m doing wrong that I might have missed? I am open to all suggestions except “all you have to do is eAt LeSs AnD mOvE aRoUnD mOrE” which I’ve heard my whole life and am actively doing with no success 😫

2024.05.19 02:39 catalessi Window and AC sizing issue

Window and AC sizing issue
Dumb person here. My living room is around 12x25ft, and I only have four windows side by side of each other facing the front of the house to utilize an AC unit. My problem is that ideally I’d like to use a 10k+ BTU unit and the ones I’ve come across all measure around 22” in width. The window opens at around 23”…. but there are these metal frames that cut an inch on both sides and comes up from the wood sill a bit more on the bottom, which will be a problem in itself when I mount an AC.
Any solutions come to mind? Appreciate any that doesn’t involve two tiny AC units!

Few days ago I posted some custom hockey cards I made using HUT 21 designs. Here’s a second batch with some extra instructions since some of y’all wanted to know about the process
First step was to print the card faces and backs. I did this by creating an 8x10 canvas on Photoshop and importing the card images from NHL HUT Builder, making sure that the cards measured 2.5x3.5 inches, like normal trading cards do. I created backside images with stats and names in Photoshop too. I printed these full sheets by uploading them to Staples 8x10 printing service website for pickup.
Second step was to use spray adhesive to glue the fronts and backs to poster paper. This is the most challenging and time-consuming part, especially the waiting for the adhesive to dry. My adhesive says to wait 24 hours for permanent bonding between paper, photos, and other materials like that. I also put some cardboard and books on top of the cards and poster board overnight to let it dry better.
Third step was to use a paper cutter to slice all the excess, and voila! More custom trading cards.

With a quarter inch to spare!
I will admit I was excited it fit! It has just enough clearance to come out of there if required, and I can access the rear terminals from the other side of the stairs.
For reference the box is an 8 cubic foot mini Marty design and holds an 18 inch woofer. The box and woofer together way 186.2 pounds right now. There was no measurable vibration (via a bubble level) on the stairs from 100 Hz down all the way to 14Hz at 115 dB (as measured by REW and an UMIK-1.)
Once I finish the wall, there will be a vibration isolated wall panel that will blend in with the rest of the woodwork I’m planning to do around the stairs.
The plan is to dress up the stairs with DIY sound diffusers and absorbers (depending on what REW says) that I can hide with similar themed woodwork to disguise the massive subwoofer hole!
For scale, picture 3 is the DIY model sitting on an old Klipsch 15 inch I still use.

Will my kennel fit in cargo?
Hey. I wanted to ask someone who owns 2023-2024 Mazda CX-5 about cargo dimensions. I'm waiting to pick up my new mazda, but in the mean time I wanted to ask if someone could check whether my dog kennel would fit in the cargo area with rear sets up.

https://preview.redd.it/2jj2gljoo91d1.png?width=936&format=png&auto=webp&s=6c1178cb2d696978e7a26dec046b181cb4bd34b6
Please note that the height would be 30 inches with handles.

It's very hard to find actual measurements and I also noticed that because rear sets are reclined, length at the top is much less then length at the bottom of the cargo, so it might not fit because of that (ideally I would have it to one of the sides)

Thank you very much in advance for your help!

2024.05.19 01:07 pUmKinBoM Jericho needs to teach Big Bill how to be 7 feet tall

I need to get this off my chest as I had this thought and need AEW to do this. Plain and simple as the title says we NEED to have Jericho teach him how to be 7 feet tall.
Just one week have Big Bill say to Jericho "I got horrible news! I measured myself and Im only 6'10" and not 7 feet tall!" Jericho will then reassure Big Bill that he will teach Big Bill how to be 7 feet tall at which point Big Bill will say "But you CANT TEACH THAT!" and Jericho will respond with "Just watch me."
Then spend the next few weeks with vignettes of Jericho having Big Bill do different stretches and exercises to help him regain his lost two inches with the pay off that Big Cass DOES get back to 7 feet tall and Jericho can say he did the impossible and taught someone how to be 7 feet tall.
Alright Tony...the first one is free but the rest I gotta start charging.

2024.05.19 00:09 Beneficial-Bet8531 First Child/Miscarriage

Hi Everyone,
On Mothers Day morning, which was also my birthday, I started spotting, which was my very first bleeding down there during my entire pregnancy. I was supposed to be coming up on 17 weeks the following Monday. Long story short, I went to the ER Monday night and they discovered no fetal heartbeat and he was only measuring 13 weeks. They are unsure why it happened (but we later on sent in fetal tissue (the umbilical cord) so they can do further testing.)
I ended up waiting a few days before going through with misoprostol to quicken the process of going into labor. I took the medicine Thursday morning and had a day of what felt like a hell with the awful contractions I was having. At 8pm he was born - everything came out in my hand at once, his body, umbilical chord and placenta. He’s about 4 inches tall and has all fingers and all toes. He is currently in our fridge right now and will be with us one more night before we let the funeral service take him to be stored and then cremated next week.
This is by far the most traumatic experience of my life. I’ve donated my eggs in the passed (4 times) and have 5 living biological children from those donations in different parts of the world. I am 28 years old and my partner (28M) are both healthy. With this being our first try for our own child and having a late missed miscarriage I just feel so discouraged. I feel like I’ve failed and we will never get our first child back again.
Has anyone gone through anything similar? How long did you wait to try again? I am having the worst bleeding and cramping of my life, and it’s only been a day and a half. I am having very mixed emotions but just really badly want to be pregnant again. Seeing a tiny baby human come out of me, lifeless, there are just no words for the grief and loss I am feeling. Thank you for reading.

2024.05.18 23:47 UnbiasedPashtun Human height continues to be measured in imperial units in many countries

In this post I'm only talking about countries that officially use the metric system but measure human height in feet and inches.
During the process of metrication, lots of different imperial/local units were phased out and replaced with metric ones. However, human height is one glaring exception (not necessarily the only one, but this post is going to focus on it).
Here is a post from an Australian sub where they talk about using the metric system for virtually everything besides human height. It isn't just Australia, but it seems to apply to most countries that are part of the British Commonwealth. Kenya, Nigeria, India, Pakistan, etc. from what I know all exclusively measure human height in the imperial system despite adopting the metric system decades ago and using it for everything else. There also doesn't seem to be any signs that the younger generation in those countries is going to make the switch to metric units for human height and it looks like they're going to continue measuring it in imperial units indefinitely.
So what would you say is the main reason that human height measurement was retained from the imperial system when the majority were phased out? What needs to be done to get human height to be measured in imperial units instead among countries that officially adopted the metric system at least? And why do you think that hasn't been done given that these countries made an effort to adopt the metric system that was mostly successful otherwise?

2024.05.18 23:27 Phuun_ Newbie Questions: Bed Frame

Newbie Questions: Bed Frame
Hello,
I have minimal woodworking experience so want some opinions, me and my girlfriend are looking into a new bed frame, we decided that a 'loft' option was a decent idea for more space.
My program I use blends a lot of the pieces together, making it look like one so I'll do my best to describe them.
All measurements in Inches:
The legs are an outer 2x6 with 2x4 making a even L shape with a 1x4 with a 1x3 even L inside There are 2 2x6s resting on the 1x4 and 1x3 inner legs that hold up the middle mattress supports.
My mattress is a queen (whatever 80x60 is)
My questions, a. do these legs look structurally sound? b. I have 7 middle mattress support planks that will be holding up the mattress, these will be held into place by 'simpson strong-ties'? (Them bracket things) drilled into the 2 2x6s, does this sound like it will hold?
Thank you for any feedback!

2024.05.18 22:20 raspflam25 Advice needed for setting this sapphire.

Advice needed for setting this sapphire.
I purchased this bicolor sapphire online, and did not pay attention to the dimensions. I just assumed it would be as large as the 1ct diamond I have in my necklace I always wear and love. I was planning to make a nearly identical chokenecklace with the new stone. The necklace I currently have is 1ct vs, and basically bought a leftover earring and had it made into a Cartier replica necklace total $2100, feels like I definitely overpaid slightly but I was in love with how it came out so didn’t think too much of it.
I plan to buy the chain and prong myself for the new necklace but the dimensions of the stone are confusing to me, I cannot figure out where to get a prong setting that would fit.
-What style is this chain is from my original necklace, and mm width? Is it rolo, cable, or something else? When I measure my current necklace it’s 0.1 inch, so about 3mm? I attached some pictures of ones I was thinking of getting, but they’re almost all 0.9-1.1 mm width? I just would like it to be small and dainty due to the stone being so small. -The prongs I see are 5 x 5mm, 5.5mm x 5.5 mm, or 6 x 4mm, 6 x 6mm, etc based off of standard oval, round, square shapes. If this stone is 5.75 x 5.05 mm, which of these would work? -Lastly, I paid around $520 for the sapphire. I had bid on it for weeks. And ended up getting it. A local gemologist I know had said if he was to obtain this type of stone it would be around 600-800$ or possibly a bit more. Would I actually save money ordering the chain and prong myself, then having a jeweler just solder it together? Thank you for your help.

New Solar Node Updade
Here are some pics of what I have printed. Not everything is it's final form.
Currently the name saved on my computer is "The Rocket" for obvious reasons. After the solar panels are installed I don't think the name will stick but who knows. I will make another comment specifically for name recommendations so comment in there with a name and be sure to look through and upvote name suggests you like.
Everything came together pretty well. Currently leaving the top cap slightly loose to allow electrical tape to be wrapped around the pipe to provide some sort of seal. I have taken no measurements yet but would guess the whole package is around 16 inches long with 3 18650 batteries.
I am currently printing the last parts to get it together. I will likely continue to tweak the design as I go.
