I have a M512a-H6 soundbar connected via eARC to a Hisense U8K TV. I suspect my issue may apply to other Vizio soundbars with DTS:X, though I can only confirm it with the M512a-H6.
As of today, Disney+ apps on IMAX Enhanced-certified TVs like my Hisense U8K can now stream DTS:X audio from certain IMAX Enhanced programs to DTS:X AVRs & soundbars. https://press.disneyplus.com/news/disney-plus-queen-rock-montreal-imax-enhanced-sound-dts Other sources have indicated that the Disney+ version of DTS:X is lossy, unlike most other versions of DTS:X, but is backwards compatible with traditional DTS.
I am currently getting DTS from my Hisense's Disney+ app; internal info screens confirm my audio from Queen Rock Montreal & Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is DTS:X. However, my soundbar only recognizes it as "DTS Digital Surround" -- traditional or "core" DTS.
I had the same issue last year with the 4K Blu-rays of Fast & Furious 6 and Furious 7, both with DTS:X on a DTS-HD High Resolution Audio codec (vs. DTS-HD Master Audio on nearly all other Blu-rays with DTS:X, which are properly treated as DTS:X). Reportedly, some DTS:X AVRs from companies like Denon & Marantz required firmware updates to handle those discs. However, I couldn't confirm if this was just a labeling issue or an actual decoding issue, especially since non-DTS:X DTS-HD HRA Blu-rays (like Bambi) register as the more advanced DTS-HD MA.
Since I cannot confirm whether or not my soundbar is actually treating either the Disney+ or DTS-HD HRA versions of DTS:X as true DTS:X, I need for Vizio tech support to confirm what this soundbar model is actually doing with these bitstreams, and if necessary & possible issue firmware updates to fix any confirmed issues.

I know what dvd looks like but I have never laid my hands on a blu ray disc so I don't know the difference because I grew up poor and thought it was more unecessarily expensive.

2024.05.15 19:37 BokehJunkie The volume output from my Panasonic UB820 seems much lower than my Apple TV. What causes this?
I currently have a UB820 and Apple TV - both connected to my Denon S760h AVR via HDMI. The Apple TV seems to reach a reasonable volume when I watch movies / shows, but the UHD Blu Ray player feels very quiet in comparison. Am I just making this up, or is there a reason for this and what would the recommended fix be?

Like the title says, I'm new to all this, so I'm not sure what the best kind of drive for ripping movies would be. I'm looking to rip blu-rays and 4ks mostly, with some being Region B titles (blu-ray). I had a portable 4k player but realized I needed an optical drive instead. Budget isn't too tight, but don't wanna spend anything more than $400-$500. Not sure what I would need, or the specifics of much of this type of thing. Which is why I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts, and maybe learn what I should be looking for. Thank you in advance!

But as Disney Plus announced, they brought Queen Rock Montreal to Disney Plus now. I thought with IMAX they meant the Audio track that was IMAX12 in theatres and now is Atmos.
But when I just clicked on the expanded version on my Disney Plus App it actually switched to what looks to me like 1.43:1! I checked a few scenes that I memorized back when it run in our IMAX GT and it looks just like the version shown in January.
I had borrowed the BluRay recently and I could swear this was in 16:9. But I know there was a DVD before. Can somebody who had watched it in January as well double check? I know there were some upscaling issues back then but I can't find the scene and my webplayer just shows it in 720p so I might miss those details that could give it away.

I've been saving up for a 3 month subscription for about a week and I'd like to know how streaming blu-ray remuxes is like. Any stutters? I'm on Windows sharing my screen from my laptop to my Samsung 4K TV with HDMI getting 500mbps down and 100 up (so internet speed should not be a problem in this scenario compared to other things like firesticks and whatnot with limited speeds), Torrentio on Stremio is never fast enough by itself and since I'm extravagant when it comes to video quality I always download the files onto my old nearly dying hard drive. I wanna know if getting it from a Real Debrid https stream will be fast enough. What's the brandwidth y'all get with streams?

I recently got the sync box and tv lights. Have had the LG UBK90 for years. Since setting up the sync box, the Blu-Ray player will no longer display disks in Dolby Vision anymore. I’ve moved around the ports it’s plugged into on the box, I updated the players software, I’ve tried different disks. I’m at a loss. What’s even weirder is when my Roku Ultra displays DV without issue. Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

Hey everyone, this post is long, so only read it if you want to, I just kind of want to put my own thoughts out there as a long time Addams fan who is also a fan of ‘Wednesday’ and why I feel that way. I apologize in advance for the long post.
So I’ve always been a big Addams Family fan, I have the 1964 sitcom series on dvd, a bootleg dvd of the 1998 “The New Addams Family” series, and the 90’s movies with Christina Ricci on Blu-Ray.
When ‘Wednesday’ came out on Netflix, I hadn’t actually watched any of the previous stuff in awhile, it was just sitting on the shelf. I loved the first season of Wednesday and it drove me to do a refresher, so I recently just got finished doing a binge of my entire Addams collection. Recently just finished my re-Watch of ‘Wednesday’ season 1, to see if the knowledge of all the previous Addams stuff fresh in my head would make me hate the new show and I confess…it doesn’t.
Sure it’s different, but why can’t it be seen as an alternate universe take on the brand rather than comparing it to everything that came before? Why can’t it be appreciated as its own separate standalone Addams thing? I fully believe you can be a long time fan of everything from the 1960’s to to 90’s and still be a fan of ‘Wednesday’. However I’m aware that when it comes to “Rivershit”, there is no bar to get over, the bar is laying on the ground actually.

So I’ve always been a big Addams Family fan, I have the 1964 sitcom series on dvd, a bootleg dvd of the 1998 “The New Addams Family” series, and the 90’s movies with Christina Ricci on Blu-Ray.
When ‘Wednesday’ came out on Netflix, I hadn’t actually watched any of the previous stuff in awhile, it was just sitting on the shelf. I loved the first season of Wednesday and it drove me to do a refresher, so I recently just got finished doing a binge of my entire Addams collection. I have a Sony UBP-X700. I paid extra to get a modded one that has region free capability (for blu-ray’s, I import sometimes.)
I have a lot of 4K discs from various companies. The Sony works fine, MOST of the time. I’ve had it freeze a few times on multi-layer 4K discs for long movies.
Tonight, the player did something I had never seen it do before. I put in the 4K for The Company of Wolves, it’s a 90min film but the disc apparently has high bitrate or multiple layers. The movie will play for a bit, and then lose signal to the TV completely (black screen) for about 5 seconds, then it comes back. It’ll do this completely randomly, even with the film paused. I’ve never had it do this on any other disc.
Desperate for a solution, I turned off Dolby Vision on the player menu, and now the movie plays fine. However, that’s extremely annoying because the disc is actually graded for DV! So, obviously I’d like to watch and utilize the DV, and should be able to!
What pisses me off is, spending over $250 for a player that can’t perform a task that MOST 4K discs (especially new films) nowadays utilize. And apparently, this is an issue with MOST 4K players! I’m so irritated, I’m almost tempted to get the Panasonic UB820 out of spite alone. That appears to be the gold standard of 4K players, but of course it costs $400+ which is honestly a hard pill to swallow… Ugh!
My gripe is, can anyone explain why we can’t get working 4K players in 2024, that don’t cost so much? Why are there so few players on the market, and the one that seems to do its job well is the most expensive, can’t we just have normal players that work??? Dolby Vision and triple layer discs aren’t a rarity, so why can’t these companies just fix their shit? There are countless blu-ray players that work perfectly, but you spend hundreds on 4K for higher quality, and the players are shabby. Is my only fix to get the Panasonic???

I was fortunate enough to have been able to see all three films in the theaters on their respective premiere dates. I remember the visual experience was unlike any other that I had ever seen. They were perfect, pure, and beauty incarnate. This was the case even before we had access to HD versions of the films. When the extended editions came out on DVD, I watched them over and over again, reliving the experience as often as I could manage it. But then there was a long period of several years where I simply didn’t have time to watch them due to having started college.
Then one day, after the blu ray format had already made an impact in the home video industry for several years, I finally got around to jumping on the blu ray bandwagon, got myself a very small HD tv, and got myself the Lord of the Rings extended editions of the films in the updated format. Although the magic and wonder was still there, it was the first time I had noted that the films had started to show their age just a bit more than I had realized; the most glaring feature being that everything had a sort of surreal green tint, up to and including all of the characters, which I assumed was the result of the light of the green screen reflecting off of the actors faces.
I didn’t learn until literally just the other week that the green tint wasn’t the way the films had originally looked. It was a glitch in the restoration process for the blu ray releases that resulted in a green tint throughout all three films. Ironically, this glitch is NOT present in the blu ray theatrical cuts of the films. In fact, despite the lack of the extended scenes, the theatrical blu ray remaster is, on a technical level, far visually superior to the extended.
If you see the scenes that the theatrical versions have in common, you can actually see a lot of the what green tint, and other color balance issues of the extended versions, has done to the integrity of the film; some scenes are washed out, some scenes are missing crisper detail, and you lose a lot of the fine details in some of the special effects.
The green tint was never corrected in subsequent HD releases; confusing considering most extended prints of blu raybfilms tend to have better remastering and editing corrections.
The problem is, now that I know it's there, I can't unsee it ever again.
When it was announced that not only was the Lord of the Rings extended editions going to be remastered in 4K, but that Peter Jackson himself was overseeing the project, Tolkien fans and cinephiles alike went absolutely nuts with excitement.
But then the 4K remaster was released, and right off the bat, the use of DNR was glaringly obvious. Everyone looked like they were posing for selfies on Instagram. There was even a scene where Gandalf’s staff kept disappearing because the DNR mistook it for digital noise. It also appeared to be an upscale of the blu ray rather than a fresh scan of the original film print. And being that it was an upscale of the blu ray extended edition, the restoration started with the green tint, then was color corrected to appear more like the correct colors of the theatrical cut. However, because it was not an exact color match, but an approximation, this resulted in some scenes being so bright and washed out that significant amounts of detail were lost. On top of this, an additional effect filter was used to make the visuals more consistent with the Hobbit trilogy; the newer, but less beloved prequel trilogy panned by critics and Tolkien fans alike. But lastly, and most insultingly, there are several scenes in which several of the little actors doubling for the Hobbit characters in wide shots, were digitally replaced with renderings of the main actors. In other words, Peter Jackson did a Star Wars to his films.
Unless Peter Jackson allows for someone else to release another edition with a new remaster, or does another one himself, but better this time around, the hope that the public will see a perfectly preserved version of the extended Lord of the Rings trilogy is utterly lost. That’s an absolute tragedy.
Though making new films is important, the primary benefit of 4K technology is its ability to preserve the fidelity of older films. It’s not just the preservation of art, but the preservation of culture. What Peter Jackson has done, if he doesn’t reverse it, is cultural vandalism. It's just like George Lucas; what he has done to his original trilogy is cultural vandalism. What every DNR-happy studio is doing to otherwise wonderful films, is cultural vandalism.
The fruit of knowledge is bitter indeed.
