A reminder on what this fight is against
SHFs have now attacked Red Lobster, home of the Cheddar Bay Biscuit. No doubt in a few years time (and that's being overly generous), Red Lobster will end up the same as Toys R Us, RadioShack, etc., by being shorted into oblivion by these greedy fucks.
This is just another little reminder of what we're actively fighting against. Hedge funds routinely destroy businesses and therefore the livelihood of the masses, time and time again, yet no one is doing anything about it...
Except now. Because of ALL of us being inspired in one way or another to invest our hard earned dollars into GME, and the collective willingness to learn and share knowledge of this one idiosyncratic stock, we're going to fuck them over harder than they ever thought was possible.. but keep in mind the fight is not over until they close. Only then will they feel the real pain.
DRSing and hodling GME is gonna have far larger ramifications than has been discussed lately.
This fight against SHFs is more than just making a "quick" buck. It's about changing our fucked up system, so the working class people who actually are the backbone of society aren't fucked repeatedly when they're just trying to make a living to support themselves.
This GME Saga IS the Occupy Wallstreet 2.0. And I, for one, won't be selling until I see hedge funds collapse the same way they've been taking out businesses for profit throughout my life.
I'm not just holding for myself or my family.. nor hodling just for my fellow ape.. but also for all of those that are so jaded, so apathetic, so cynical, and so broke because of this fucked up dystopic society these mother fuckers have created for us all.
This is our revolutionary moment whether everyone recognizes it or not. This is our one chance for real redistribution of wealth. Don't waste it..
Make. Them. Pay!!!!
No Cell, No Fucking Sell! Get FUUUCKED Hedgies!!!!! 💎👐

2024.05.20 20:19 PiscetIscariot Is 2013 the year when EastEnders began to take a dip in quality?

Is 2013 the year when EastEnders began to take a dip in quality?
This is just my opinion:
Watching the 2013 episodes again on iPlayer has reminded me that although this wasn’t a bad year for the show, I think it was a noticeable downgrade on the previous year.
Some of the storylines were a bit too predictable and uninspired;
Max breaking Tanya’s heart again
Alfie not working out with Roxy and wanting Kat back
Sharon & Jack just didn’t go well as a couple and it was so obvious she’d end up with Phil again in the end
Lola’s battle at not letting Phil take over Lexi’s life
Heather Trott, Derek Branning & Pat Butcher we’re all killed off in 2012, 3 great characters and in 2013 we saw the departure of Zainab Masood and the death of Michael Moon.
It’s still an enjoyable watch overall but personally I think it was the sign of things to come, what followed after 2013 was an awful period of the show that really has only recovered in the past year or so.

2024.05.20 18:29 thewickerstan You know that bit in "Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana" where Cobain talks about mixing the Beatles with Black Sabbath? What are some other bands that fit that same ___ + ___ = ___ formula?

Asked this on music, but figured it wouldn't hurt to ask on here too.
I remember years ago asking Eric Shillinger, "How successful do you think a band could be if they mixed really heavy Black Sabbath with the Beatles? What could you do with that?" - Kurt Cobain, Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana
I always found that description to be oddly very apt when describing Nirvana's sound: a marriage of the heaviness of the former and the melody of the latter (though obviously Sabbath could be very poppy and melodic and the Beatles heavy and aggressive).
What are some other bands and songs that fit the ___ = __ + __ equation? Off the top of my head...
What comes to mind for you all?

2024.05.20 16:31 scarsellaj The Hater's Guide To The 2023-24 Premier League Season: Final Matchday Edition

The latest and most thrilling season of English football would also be the most controversial. The amount of times we had issues with refs, VAR, red cards, and blown calls made the NFL refs seem like experts in their craft. Seriously, the best European football league can't even get a video review correct in less than 2 minutes and it drives everyone mad. We also had further proof of Rich 7 favoritism with the FFP punishments dished out. It was absolute chaos, it caused fanbases to melt down like Chernobyl, but it made for amazing shitposting. How did your team do?
Manchester City: Sigh, the Prem is not beating the farmers' league allegations after this. In some way, we all expected this. After their historic treble, everyone assumed City would take a step back. They weren't even the best team in the country and they still found a way to creep up into first place. Their fourth title in five seasons, six under Pep Guardiola. They still have a chance at a double, too. If you're still living in the "Fraudiola" camp, I suggest you touch grass. Do you know understand how fucking insane that is? Sure, you can say Abu Dhabi bankrolled him and now they may be paying for it dearly but that is serious contention for greatest manager of all time. This time he was up against the adversity, too. They went without KDB and Haaland for long periods of time. Phil Foden was rightfully voted PFA Player of the Year for his efforts in their absence. Julian Alvarez took massive strides in becoming the next great Argentine striker...when he can get into the team. Jeremy Doku showed flashes of greatness, and it might spell the end for Jack Grealish. Rodri was Rodri, Ruben Dias was Ruben Dias, you know the deal. Even academy kids made serious progress. Pep won the Champions League without Messi and with a real striker. He's now guided City to another title. Goddammit, can we please get someone to topple this monopoly?
Arsenal: You did it again...you fucking did again. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. You thought you were becoming the reincarnation of Real Madrid. You ended up becoming the red version of Poch's Spurs. Some might even say that Spurs team was better than this team. Arsenal had the title in their grasp again. Then they sat back and drew with City, lost to Villa at home, and in the end, these results cost them. You bottled it again. Bukayo Saka had his best season ever. So did Martin Odegaard. Leandro Trossard made a case for a starting spot. Gabriel Martinelli was sporadic but effective. William Saliba and Gabriel locked down the backline. David Raya won the Golden Glove. Mikkel Arteta has a case for Manager of the Year (likely going to Unai Emery), and they still bottled it. We don't need to rehash how their European campaign went. You should've known Spurs were never going to give you that benefit of the doubt. Why would your local rivals help your title charge? At least you're back in the Champions League, and you showed you could shed some of those demons next campaign, so long as you don't match up with Bayern again. The painful truth is, you went trophyless again. How much longer is the goodwill with Arteta going to last? Doing this once? Forgivable. But twice? Unconscionable.
Liverpool: This was not how Klopp's Last Dance was supposed to go. One trophy, and the League Cup at that, is all Liverpool had to show for it. They hit the worst patch of rotten form at the most inopportune time. You might think losing games twice to Manchester United in a span of a week was bad enough, but to go to Italy and lose to Atalanta? And they kept a clean sheet?? Dear god, they made Crystal Palace look like prime Barcelona at one point. You are fucking cooked, and it shows. Darwin Nunez started to break out, then reverting to forgetting how to play the sport of football entirely. Virgil Van Djik's age showed. Ibrahima Konate shows flashes but is injury- and mistake-prone. Mo Salah is mentally checked out, and it showed with him in only scoring twice in the last 10 matches of the seasons. Him and Klopp arguing on the sideline was peak Liverpool banter era. You literally on the verge of a quadruple AGAIN and you scuffed the run... This team is going to need a massive reset, and that may mean cashing in a few aging stars. New manager Arne Slot will have an absolute gargantuan job ahead of him. With FSG's financial model, it'll be interesting to see who they bring in. But what do you about Mo Salah? Clearly his age is starting show.
Aston Villa: Unai Emery was sacked by Arsenal for "underachieving." When you see the job he did with Villa with half the budget he had at Arsenal and players willing to run through walls for him, you can understand how Villa managed to stay in the Top 4 most of the season. Ollie Watkins had his best season to date. Douglas Luiz become the third-best defensive midfielder in the league, and dispatched a few penalties. Niccolo Zaniolo played a smaller role and still contributed heavily to big wins. It wasn't ever perfect, and there are plenty of wayward results to point out, but Villa has got some of their old mojo back. Get ready, boys, you're going dancing next season. You'll be in the new-look Champions League for the first time since the 1980s. Don't forget: Villa has some European pedigree to them. Sure, it was back when the competition wasn't as fierce as it is now, but respect them. Otherwise all you Madrid fans are going to be shitting themselves when you rock up to Villa Park for the league stage.
Tottenham: Tottenham's season hit some very high highs, and some deeply low lows. A 10-game unbeaten streak to start the season ended with a four losses in a row. Injuries crippled all the progress they made. Ange Postecoglou's all-out attack works, but when it doesn't, it is absolutely terrifying to watch. Hueng-min Son had a nice comeback season. Richarlison finally came good for the club. James Maddison started out well enough and then had a fall-off for the ages, as did Pedro Porro. The backline of Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven showed they can be great but they need real discipline in midfield to balance out the high line. But there are still many players that can't get them over the hump. Not to mention, they were derailed by injuries all campaign. Make it 16 years since the last major trophy. Fifth seems fitting for a team still going through an identity and cultural reset. Some supporters think Ange isn't the one for the job. They often forget just how big of a rebuild is needed after losing Harry Kane and other core players over the past five seasons. Those are probably also the people that don't see the positive of the Tottenham money-making machine. Why win trophies when you can host NFL games? Sigh, I just want one Cup, is that too much to ask for? At least they clinched Europa League, I guess.
Chelsea: Todd Boehly will no longer be making the calls about Chelsea's transfers. That should make the fans a little bit happier. If you're keeping score at home, he's only got 1/30 of new signings right. Jury is still out on Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, Axel Diasi, Mykhalio Mudrk, Noni Madueke, and Levi Colwill. Mauricio Pochettino was trying to build something, but it was hindered by constant setbacks. A massive pile of injuries, extreme fan pressure, and underperforming players signaled it would not be another fruitful season for the Blue Lions. You got beat by a bunch of high school students in the Carabao Cup final, and somehow that wasn't the lowest point of the season. It was the thrashing by Arsenal. Chelsea should feel lucky they snagged Cole Palmer out from under Man City. He's the real Eden Hazard regen, even though he's a bit of a penalty merchant. He dragged Chelsea from finishing outside the Top 10 again. This summer will be a major clear-out. Raheem Sterling, Reece James, Ben Chilwell, and Thiago Silva might or are already leaving. The thinner squad will allow Poch to actually build something...maybe. You're not seriously going to sell Conor Gallagher to Spurs, right?
Newcastle: Eddie Howe can feel sort of vindicated that he guided this Newcastle team to a top 10 finish. They had one of the worst injury sheets in the league this season. The delicate balance of Champions League and the English season exposed their biggest flaw: not enough depth. Sandro Tonali getting suspended for being a degenerate gambler definitely did not help. Nick Pope was out most of the year and Martin Dubravka showed why he's no longer first-choice. Sven Botman and Dan Burn spent time on the sidelines and that killed their defense. Seriously though, they were chucking out Football Manager regens to play critical minutes. That only works in video games. In reality, the club is backed up against the FFP bubble. They will need to sell to buy, and that might mean cashing in on Alexander Isak or Bruno Guiamares. Maybe they'll even cut ties with Tonali and try to recoup some of their money. The richest club in the world is playing inside the rules? I guess they don't want to be the new Man City. I honestly commend them for trying to play within the confines of the rules. Some clubs can't say they do that.
Manchester United: Jim Ratcliffe really had no idea the scope of the rebuild he inherited once he bought his stake in United. He called out the club culture and facilities in the media multiple times, but perhaps it was all reactionary. United had a shit season. And boy do I mean shit. None of their players could stay healthy. Marcus Rashford is entering Dele Alli territory with how bad his falloff has been. There was the Mason Greenwood situation, then the Antony situation, and the Brazilian managed only two league goals across the whole season. Jadon Sancho called out Ten Hag's management and was gleefully banished back to Dortmund, where he started picking up his performances. He's in a Champions League Final...lol. Casemiro and Raphael Varane showed their age. He had a solid run of form but it didn't last. Varane's already said he's done in Manchester. Rasmus Hojlund took 15 games to find his first goal of the season. Alejandro Garnacho is now the best player at the club and even he had beef with Ten Hag's coaching. Bruno Fernandes might be seeking greener pastures. They finished dead last in their Champions League group and were out of Europe by February. Take solace in making the FA Cup final, but you were losing 3-0 to Coventry City, a Championship club, and had to beat them on penalties. Old Trafford may truly be falling down, and it doesn't help with Ten Hag waffling about he is still the best man for the job. Because you know, it was his signings that set the club back so much money. Antony costing 100 million quid needs to be investigated. There's no real sign of progress under INEOS's ownership. It's still too early to judge, but it's clear they will need to make some decisions. Enjoy raiding all your rivals for executives. Apparently "We're Manchester United" still works.
West Ham: Was it a bad season for West Ham? When you deep it, you'd probably say not really. David Moyes started out kinda slow but managed to get the Hammers going in vital moments. Jarrod Bowen continued his remarkable rise even as a center-forward. The pillage of Ajax for Edson Alvarez and Mohamed Kudus was fruitful, even if Kudus's underlying numbers aren't that great. James Ward-Prowse stepped up his game after being freed from the shite coaching at Southampton. Alphonse Areola cemented himself as the true No. 1 in goal. Lucas Paqueta was the real eye candy. So much so he's looking like the heir-apparent for Kevin De Bruyne. He'll cost another small nation's GDP but he was that class. Sure, they didn't reach the Europa final like they wanted to and got knocked out by Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen, but how can you say this was a disappointing season? Disappointing enough to tell Moyes he's done after this season? You're replacing him Julen Lopetegui? I know he did fantastic work with Sevilla, and you may see yourselves as the English Sevilla, but tread lightly. Did you see what happened between Wolves and him? Or what happened in his final season in Seville?
Crystal Palace: Today's top stories: Crystal Palace finished comfortably mid-table for the 11th season in a row. In other news, grass is green. It was a strange but similar season for the Eagles. Spats between ownership over the long-term vision for the club coupled with Roy Hodgson's depressing retirement tour clouded what could've been an opportunity to pounce. With Brighton and Bournemouth shitting the bed, the time was prime to strike. But again, they were let down by inconsistent forwards. Jordan Ayew and Jean-Phillipe Mateta are still struggling to score consistently (At least Mateta is producing now). Odsanne Eduoard is made of glass bones and paper skin. Eberechi Eze, Michael Olise, and Dean Henderson were good enough to keep them afloat. Eze's got enough street cred to have City and Spurs linked to him, but we'll see what premium the Eagles charge. More credit is owed to Oliver Glasner. He was a shrewd appointment, and it showed with his tiki-taka style of play. Remember, he took Frankfrut to a Europa League final win and beat Barcelona and West Ham to do it. Next season should be a moment to capitalize on drops in quality from other mid-table rivals, but you'll probably be back here with me in 2025 with a 12th consecutive mid-table finish. At least this time it's in the Top 10.
Brighton: Brighton was my biggest disappointment for the 23-24 season. Maybe that's too harsh, but what the actual hell happened? There was a lot of squad turnover, understandably affecting the quality. But they still had Evan Ferguson, Karou Mitoma, Lewis Dunk, Danny Welback, Julio Enciso, and Simon Adringa to pick up the slack. Oh wait, almost everyone listed above was injured long-term. Roberto De Zerbi's managerial stock took a massive blow. He couldn't properly juggle the league and European football, especially as the injuries piled up and they were relying on academy kids to play key minutes. There's also rumors of him beefing with club executives about the transfer policy. The drawback of such a unique system: the falloff is inevitable. It ended up causing "irreconcilable differences," and De Zerbi promptly packed his shit and left. At least Brighton can take solace knowing they won their first European group stage and picked up sensational victories against Ajax and Marseille. Proud moments amid a rather shite season. Pick yourselves up and go again, lads. Even though De Zerbi bounced, your ownership will already have his next candidate picked out. Just pray it's not a Graham Potter return.
Bournemouth: The Cherries had another fine season where a lot started to come together. I was skeptical about them parting ways with Gary O'Neil after the job he did, but Andoni Iraola was a shrewd appointment. He actually found ways to unlock Dominic Solanke. Not even Jurgen Klopp could do that. Antoine Semenyo appeared as a servicable mid-table winger. Luis Sinisterra brought the Colombian flare to the South Coast and proved he could be the country's next great hope. Some of the English lads like Lewis Cook carved out key roles, and did just about everything right to ensure another comfortable finish. Bournemouth really were not in any danger of going down. The blueprint is there. I doubt Iraola will be able to take them into European places, but I've been proven wrong by plenty of managers before.
Fulham: Another solid finish for Fulham. Look at you, not yo-yoing even amidst Tony Khan's ridiculous pro wrestling PR drama. The Jaguars of English football showed a lot of fight and a lot of class. The signing of the season is surely Rodrigo Muniz. The Brazilian revolution between him, Andreas Pereira, and the aging Willian was glamorous. Antonee Robinson played like a man reborn and may get a move to a bigger club. USMNT fans couldn't be happier. It was tough not seeing Tim Ream playing week in and week out but he's clearly slowing down and might need replacing. But you can't get rid of Tom Cairney! It's not allowed by order of the streets. I doubt Marco Silva will read this, but he may not even have a choice in the matter. Joao Palhinha likely played his final season at Craven Cottage. Even at his age, he's good enough to get into the Bayern or Arsenal first team. Cash in and replenish, you know the drill. They'll have a lot of work to do this summer.
Wolves: Gary O'Neil is a top manager for the jobs he's done with Bournemouth and Wolves. It was not an easy season for Wolves, but compared to past campaigns, this was fantastic. O'Neill successfully unlocked Hwang Hee-Chan and Matheus Cunha. That alone is massive. Toti Gomes flourished in midfield. As did Pablo Sarabia. Pedro Neto showed flashes of brilliance...when he wasn't struck down by injury. Jose Sa returned to form and kept the team comfortably floating between between the top half and upper-mid talbe. What more can you say of Wolves? They were one of the better mid-tier teams this season, and that was after Julen Lopetegui walked out just days before the season began. You thought the Wolves were dead? Oh no, they are still on the hunt. Unfortunately, their pack is likely to find new homes with more money. I think you get the metaphor.
Everton: It was meant to be a Sean Dyche masterclass. Playing attractive football has never been his repertoire, yet that was exactly what he did with this Everton. Meanwhile, Everton fans are still steaming about the points deductions they underwent. I can understand why they feel this way, considering there are much worse violators and they're being made an example of. Yet Dyche thrives on these situations. He could only collect so many points with this Everton group but they did play well enough and have some decent talent. Jared Branthwaite is clearly an upgrade over some of their past center-backs. Consider this his window-shopping season. DCL flirted with injuries and still managed to score key goals. Beto hasn't come good yet but give it a little time. Idrissa Gana Gueye played well for his age, and Amadou Onana too had his window-shopping season. Fear not, Toffees. Even with the points deduction, you will finish comfortably bottom-half, and had it not been for the Premier League's hypocrisy, you would've been as high as 12th. This is a huge moment, because you're also moving into Bramley Moore next season. Godspeed, Everton.
Brentford: Ummm, hello? Anybody here want to win a fucking football match? Anyone want to collect three points? The good vibes at the Gtech Community Stadium are starting to falter. Brentford's feel-good story is starting to get a reality check: they lack significant quality. The plan was to continue Thomas Frank's Nordic Connection since it had produced results in the past. They got Ivan Toney back around mid-winter, but did it really change their fortunes? He wasn't anywhere close to his past self. Too much time on the couch will do that. Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbuemo did step up in attack, but without Rico Henry and Ethan Pinnock in defense it was too easy to carve through them. Mark Flekken did his best to mitigate the damage, but it was not enough to save them from a 16th-place finish. Nathan Collins was ok business but he clearly needs more time to develop to the system. Sergio Regulion put in some decent shifts on load, but not enough to justify keeping him permanently. You passed: DON'T! GET! RELEGATED! But for the love of god, please fix this shit before 24-25. Time to reset on the squad, find another plucky veteran willing to take a pay cut for playing time.
Nottingham Forest: Speaking of points deduction, nobody feels bad for Forest. They made more signings than Chelsea and clearly did it by some fishy means. It was mostly because they couldn't get Atletico Madrid to buy Brennan Johnson, so they had to accept Tottenham's lower offer. That doesn't excuse past transgressions. Then that wild social media statement that called out the Premier League's officiating. Secretly, everyone loved it but also wondered how they had the audacity to say such a thing. The only thing they can't defend is themselves. Steve Cooper, the architect of their return to Premier League and first-season survival, was canned for Nuno Espirito Santos. It kinda worked...I guess. They're not in a relegation spot even with their punishment but they definitely look the part. Gio Reyna came here on loan and had minimal impact. Morgan Gibbs-White looks good but clearly has flaws. Chris Wood is still their only reliable striker. Matt Turner was benched for a 32-year old Mats Sels and that didn't fix any of their goalkeeper problems. They're like a frat house toilet: always leaking. They'll definitely be another clear-out this summer.
Luton Town: At some point, results start to matter. It felt like Luton realized that too late. They did put up some impressive results like a 4-4 draw to Newcastle and a 4-goal dismantling of Brighton, but they struggled mightily. It was expected, but they really did give better teams runs for their money. Ross Barkley and Andros Townsend came off the couch to help. Barkley made a case for Comeback Player of the Year. Townsend provided some experience but football skills...not so much. Elijah Adebayo and Alfie Doughty tried to get the creativity going. Carlton Morris managed to post a double-digit goal season. They had pieces but could never put it together fully. The defense...good god, the defense! It couldn't stop a beach ball from going over the goal line. You brought in Daiki Hashioka to stabilize things, and all he did was score own goals and turn the ball over. It's sad that Luton is going back to the 2nd tier. Rob Edwards's job is probably safe, but can he remake the magic of 2022-23? Might be a step too far. Honestly, I'm more sad to see Jeffrey the Labrador go. The goodest of boys makes the goodest of club mascots.
Burnley: I can only applaud Burnley's ownership for not thinking like a yo-yo club. They chose Vincent Kompany because he is the anti-Sean Dyche. Free flowing, tiki taka football, playing out from the back with inverted fullbacks. Even if all the haters wanted to see him go to bring in a relegation dogfighter like Big Sam, the executives kept their man. Truly cut from the same cloth as Pep, but without any of the Pep players. That was the real downfall of Burnley's return to the Prem. This group won 101 points in the Championship last year? They didn't even manage to get 30 this time around. Kompany played anti-survival ball, and it didn't work. Sure, they had talent with guys like Vitinho and Jacob Bruud Larsen, but after it was shite through and through. At least Kompany had the audacity to play an expansive style, but survival needed more defensive rigidity. Go win it again, Clarets.
Sheffield United: If Burnley was ass, Sheffield United was mega-ass. They played like a Championship club, so it's only natural they got clobbered like a Championship club. They brought in Ben Brereton-Diaz and his fake Chilean skillset and he was...actually kinda good. It can't be said for the rest of them. Ollie McBurnie and Cameron Archer seem like the standouts, but nobody on this team was convincing enough to warrant a move to a bigger team except maybe BBD. He'll likely sign for Everton as the replacement for DCL. The club thought bringing back Chris Wilder in place of Paul Heckingbottom was the move, and it did next to nothing. Setting a record for most goals conceded in a single season is hilarious levels of incompetent defending. Conglats, you are now the new Norwich. Wear your badge of shame in anguish and go win the bloody lot in the Championship.

2024.05.19 02:20 DontTakeOurCampbell I've been trying to get back into reading more. Can anyone suggest me a book Similar to...

My favorite authors of whom I've read more than one of their books aare:
Orson Scott Card - Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow are two of my favorite novels but really much of the Endersaga is good, too
Tom Clancy - I love the Jack Ryan books (the ones actually written by Tom Clancy -- I haven't read any of the ghostwritten ones) and Cardinal of the Kremlin probably tied with Ender's Game for my favorite overall novel
CS Lewis - Love the Narnia series and That Hideous Strength and his writing in general
Authors where I've only read one of their books (but really liked the book of theirs I read) include:
Andy Weir - The Martian, while I didn't love just how profuse the cursing was in the book, it was a very engaging read from start to finish and definitely in the top 5 of my favorite novels
Michael Crichton - Jurassic Park - While the movie is good, the book is much better than the movie
JRR Tolkien - The Hobbit - while I have listened to/read The Return of the King and The Silmarillion as well, I've never been able to get over the "nothing happens for a few hundred pages" in the first part of The Fellowship of the Ring, so while I might get canceled (and deservedly so, probably) for this take, I've just never been able to get into Lord of the Rings. Maybe it's because fantasy was just never really my thing? I've not even read Harry Potter which is something I suppose I should read at least the first book at some point? Like I said, fantasy just has not been my jam.
I guess in short my favorite genres to read include science fiction and really detailed action/techno-thrillers. Fantasy is a genre I want to get into and I'm open to recommendations, but I just hate it when nothing really happens for hundreds of pages and that's a hurdle I've yet to be able to get over.
Anyway, after all of this blathering on my part, does anyone have any book recommendations for me based off of my list of stuff that I've liked so far? I would say that the two main genres I have no interest in at all are romance and horror. I just have never been into romance books and I've never liked horror stories at all either.

2024.05.18 22:50 saltyblueberry25 Tinfoil master thesis on DFV meme-story

Not really a master thesis just my notes from the second half of all the dfv memes watched from oldest to newest.
These notes come from watching every ppshow of the week and taking my favorite bits of tinfoil from the community into one fairly simple look into the story dfv is telling us without getting too deep on possible tinfoil, it’s just laid out plain and simple here.
Tldr; this is a very long post. I made notes about the last 30 minutes of the compilation and it feels very bullish.
Edit:
I think all the memes are separate little stories that all tie in together. It doesn’t necessarily have to be like a movie forwards or backwards. The meaning of each one is pretty clear on the surface and then there’s little Easter eggs deep in the tinfoil but I don’t think we need to watch it like a movie to get it even though there is extra context when you watch a few together.
I went back to his page and just been watching them one at a time and they’re epic. He’s just loaded us up with an arsenal of memes to repost whenever we’re feeling jacked on our journey and given us the vibe and the tinfoil that we’re definitely about to fucking win.
Here goes:
(I’ll add my notes for the first 30 minutes soon.)
About 30 minutes in someone asks, “where you been”, he says “waiting”, what about getting caught? “All part of the plan.”
Then there’s usual suspects movie with the goofy meme “I’ll fuckin do it again”.
——
Jake texting Keith, hilarious (is this about our Jake2b and the story PP had about accidentally going to a gay bar around the first pulte event? So funny with the guy with 600 memes and basically joking that he became a full blown psycho with the memes.
Tell me where the freaks at - epic pump up music. (Psyched on us? Finding other freaks to vibe with.)
Guy looks out the window, then the Teddy in a chair (might have just been a response to Cramer being a smartass). Then Hank (Jim Carrey) starts to lose it as the stock price keeps going down, his alter ego comes out.
Truman show, he’s trying to escape, they say “he’ll turn back he’s too afraid”. They hit him with everything they’ve got but he knows it’s all fake. He says, “is that the best you can do??” (I think this is clearly about fake price movement, trying to keep us trapped in the illusion)
“Fury is a game where every boss fight feels like the final boss. They taunt you, they demand you get back in your prison cell, they pound you into a pulp and they even make you doubt the righteousness of your own quest towards freedom. But the soundtrack man, it keeps egging you on. To whoop some ass!” PP theme music drops. Holy shit.
(This one is obviously talking about us, I cried because I was so happy when I heard this one)
——
The Bullet one talking about time, cause and effect, “don’t try to understand it, just feel it”. “Instinct, got it.”
Morpheus teaching neo it’s all fake. Just before that scene he says, “you think that’s air you’re breathing?” … “Again!”
Alice says “But I don’t want to go among mad people.” The cat replies, “Most everyone’s mad here. You may have noticed I’m not all there myself.” Neo waking up again in the 4th movie.
Alice going down a rabbit hole into wonderland.. psychedelic music and dancing. (That’s us going down the rabbit hole thinking we’ve gone mad but loving every minute of it.)
Next scene guy running and falls over, music says “I lost myself.”
Shawshank, they find the tunnel he made. In 2021 Kitty escaped prison. All they found of him was some Reddit posts, tweets, and an old live stream. Investing is the study of pressure and time. That’s all it takes really, pressure and time. That and a keen goddamn activist.
A man will do anything to keep his mind busy in prison. Turns out kittys favorite activity was handing out memes, a handful at a time (the dirt for the tunnel and the tinfoil that’s helped us dig our way to freedom). Kitty did as he was told, buffed that financial education to a high mirror shine. (I think he’s been getting ready for something big and these memes are just a countdown.)
Bruce Willis. “No, THIS is the Kansas City shuffle.” (An advanced form of confidence trick where the mark is aware of being involved in a swindle and believes that he or she can outsmart the swindler; however, this is all part of the trick, and by attempting to retaliate, the mark unwittingly assists the con artist.) Hedge funds are the mark and dfv/rc are playing a con, the bear trap?
——
Pay attention to what I say, I choose my words carefully and I never repeat myself. The cat looks at the camera.
Michael from the office - It’s Britney bitch. And I am back. Cut to Britney Spears - I must confess I still believe. When I’m not with you I lose my mind. Give me a sign (like how we’re always asking for a sign?? (with the alien g from signs all red like a gme logo giving birth). Hit me BABY one more time!
Goosebumps all the papers fly out of the briefcase right when we get like 200 new dockets clawing back money from 90 days before bbby bk. Bear beware… you’re in for a scare…
Then it’s Abbi from Broad city dancing all over the place and she’s obsessed with bed bath and beyond in the show. There’s also the scene where the other girl is dancing behind a colored blanket with the same logo as HBC and then the next scene she’s tied up. Then they’re dancing again.. and naked then then only in shorts. Naked shorts?
We’ll never survive unless we’re a little crazy. The modern investor unleashes the animal within to take on the big city - that’s gotta be us apes?
What kind of person are you? The kind that sees signs, sees miracles? Or do you believe that people just get lucky? Is it possible that there are no coincidences? The kid holds up a baby monitor. They find a crop circle and it’s two GameStop logos turned in different directions (maybe rc turned GameStop around) and then another one with a long line and a baby gme logo (is gme about to have a baby?!)
Why make something disposable like an investment thesis when you can make something that lasts forever, like a GameStop meme? (It says “Reality” at the bottom of this clip, lol)
Jack Nicholson in the shining (music playing it’s just a matter of time before I lose my mind it’s also a place in ready player one where they have to take the leap not taken, the leap of faith, a kiss). “Make a lot of memes today?” Lol
Can’t stop what’s coming. Kicks some ass.
——
I got both hands off the wheel, the cops are coming. I listen to the music with no fear, you can hear it too if you’re sincere. Cuz I’m a punk rocker yes I am. (song: punkrocker by the teddybears)
Rock ain’t about doing things prefect! Who can tell me what it’s really about? Sticking it to the man! If you wanna rock, you gotta break the rules.
Two cars racing, one plays chicken with a truck and then cut to bojack horseman talking on stage right before they almost crash (stalking horse? Looks just like he horse from 1, 2 switch that GameStop tweeted the minute the stalking horse deadline was up.)
Now you may only see a pile of boring forms and numbers, but I see a story (us going through the dd and maybe holly etlin talking about there’s a story here but it’s not mine to tell)
Listen to this song, it’ll change your life.
(Song is don’t fear the reaper - so don’t be afraid of death, funny because of the cowbell, maybe cowbell is involved in the tinfoil but at the end of the song lyrics not shown in the clip they say: don't be afraid, Come on, baby (and she had no fear) And she ran to him (then they started to fly) They looked backward and said goodbye)
Big Lebowski dude is investigating and finds the drawing of Jackie tree horn and it’s just a guy with a raging erection with the name cohen at the top of the paper. (I think this means rc is ready to fuck)
Jason borne is telling the run Lola run chick he can’t run with her, he has to be careful because people are after him. He says I gotta figure it out. She says well then figure it out. They drive into a parking garage through the wrong way (where it should say exit it says exit strategy and he enters through the exit, parks and walks away, as in “what’s an exit strategy”)
Then it looks like maybe him and rc just waiting and dealing with some bs.
Then there’s the Backstage roaring cat perhaps. The girl says ima stick beside him.
Not sure about everyone shooting each other but someone said maybe because he wrote it and manifested it?
——
Then the dress one “this is art, get it?” Was apparently two minutes after hey Ross and some others were talking about that dress on a space call.
I’m a United States gamestop memer. Aren’t those the guys that go crazy and come back with an arsenal of memes and blast everybody? Sometimes. Price action keeps coming and coming… and then it’s GameStop earnings week! (6/5 aftermarket)
Always sunny scene maybe like a peek into how crazy he’s been feeling not being able to talk to anyone for three years?
He can’t speak or he’ll get in trouble.
Alladin scene (alladin name of trading algo. He also says next time I’ll use a nom de plume - pen name) all I gotta do is jump! (The theme of taking a leap of faith again)
Dreyfus billionaire family (no idea but she’s dancing having a great time)
You can’t handle the truth (code red has to do with a worm/virus, maybe they’re about to unleash something that destroys several companies that are short? And it’s pretty funny)
Beavis and butthead sex for dummies (to me it says rc and dfv are ready to fuck but also cex means centralized exchanges which are also for dummies)
Oceans 11, (theme is a heist. We’re all looking at each other like what’s about to happen and then the last guy is just looking at boobs, seems to describe a group like us lol)
Bernard from westworld can’t see the bear thesis (because in the movie he’s programmed not to but irl it’s because there isn’t a thesis!)
“That’s not a thesis,” pulls out huge knife, “that’s a thesis.”
The gme galaxy on the cat collar says deepfuckingvalue so I think he’s saying it’s still deep value and we often made memes about the black hole of gme absorbing the rest of the market into it so maybe that’s it.
Whats in the box? What’s in the box??? (What’s the plan??? RC not telegraphing his plans)
Guy looks at all the memes - she asks “is it not good?” “It is miraculous.” (That’s us loving every second of this. Thank you dfv.)
And so.. you just RAN. Forest gump runnin’ (gme gonna just keep runnin’)
you go backwards but then you go forwards again… you go backwards… then he walks out of the woods.. (are we out of the woods now? Done going backwards?)
We’ll see. The Zen philosophy story - kid breaks leg, oh that’s bad, can’t go to war, oh now it’s good etc - (I think he’s saying to be zen, we’re gonna win, but this message goes deeper:
We don’t always know what is good or bad. Breaking your leg isn’t good or bad, those are just judgements in our mind. We don’t know what the future holds. Almost anything can be a good thing or a bad thing, all we can do is accept life and how things play out without judgement.)
We’ll see.
Then the boy is saying bye to ET, the music says I’ve really enjoyed my stay, but I must be movin on. (DFV going silent again until this all plays out.)
——
——
He’s saying “we fuckin won fellas! Be zen, and we’ll see this all play out soon enough.”
I think the heavy use of good movies and music and video games may also be hinting at gamestops nft marketplace May reopen to sell those 3 things as NFTs by partnering with blockbuster and some musicians.
LFG 🚀 I’ll see you regards on the moon.

Directors at the Box Office: Clint Eastwood (Part 1)

As Reddit doesn't allow posts to exceed 40,000 characters, Eastwood's edition had to be split into two parts because his whole career cannot be ignored. The second part will be posted tomorrow.

Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's Clint Eastwood's turn.
Eastwood was a troublemaker at school, and he had a bunch of odd jobs such as lifeguard, paper carrier, grocery clerk, forest firefighter, and golf caddy. In 1951, he was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War and was discharged two years later. Through this, he got into contact with a Hollywood representative, who got him into acting classes and started his acting career. He got his start by starring in the hit show Rawhide, but he said he was exhausted by the experience. This caught the attention of some film producers and he decided to act in films directed by the then-unknown Sergio Leone. His career was on the rise, and then he got the chance to make his directorial debut.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was he to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze his career.

It should be noted that as he started his career in the 1970s, some of the domestic grosses here will be adjusted by inflation. The table with his highest grossing films, however, will be left in its unadjusted form, as the worldwide grosses are more difficult to adjust.

Play Misty for Me (1971)

"The scream you hear may be your own!"
His directorial debut. It stars Eastwood, Jessica Walter and Donna Mills, and follows a radio disc jockey being stalked by an obsessed female fan.
Before his colleague Irving Leonard died, he and Eastwood had discussed the idea of producing a film that was to give Eastwood the artistic control he desired, and his debut as a director. Eastwood said he was ready, "I stored away all the mistakes I made and saved up all the good things I learned, and now I know enough to control my own projects and get what I want out of actors."
The film was a huge success for Eastwood, and it also received positive reviews. So far, his directorial career was off to a great start.
  • Budget: $950,000.
  • Domestic gross: $10,600,000. ($81.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $10,600,000.

High Plains Drifter (1973)

"They'd never forget the day he drifted into town."
His second film. The film stars Eastwood, Verna Bloom and Mariana Hill, and follows a mysterious stranger who metes out justice in a corrupt frontier mining town.
Eastwood reportedly liked the offbeat quality of the film's original nine-page proposal and approached Universal with the idea of directing it, which would make it his first directed Western. The screenplay was inspired by the real-life murder of Kitty Genovese in Queens in 1964, which eyewitnesses reportedly stood by and watched. Holes in the plot were filled in with black humor and allegory, influenced by Sergio Leone.
It was well received, and the film even surpassed Play Misty for Me at the box office. Eastwood was just going up.
  • Budget: $5,500,000.
  • Domestic gross: $15,700,000. ($110.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $15,700,000.

Breezy (1973)

"Her name is Breezy."
His third film. It stars William Holden and Kay Lenz, and follows the relationship between a middle-aged real estate agent and a young hitchhiker.
This was his first directed film without starring on it. And his lack of presence certainly hurt the film; it received mixed reviews and flopped at the box office.
  • Budget: $750,000.
  • Domestic gross: $200,000. ($1.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $217,753.

The Eiger Sanction (1975)

"His lifeline, held by the assassin he hunted."
His fourth film. Based on the novel by Trevanian, the film stars Eastwood, George Kennedy, Vonetta McGee, and Jack Cassidy. It follows Jonathan Hemlock, an art history professor, mountain climber, and former assassin once employed by a secret government agency, who is blackmailed into returning to his deadly profession for one last mission.
The film received mixed reactions for its writing, and it wasn't a box office success either.
  • Budget: $9,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $14,200,000. ($82.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $14,200,000.

The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)

"An army of one."
His fifth film. Based on the novel Gone to Texas by Forrest Carter, it stars Eastwood, Chief Dan George, Sondra Locke, Bill McKinney and John Vernon. The film tells the story of Josey Wales, a Missouri farmer whose family is murdered by Union militia during the Civil War. Driven to revenge, Wales joins a Confederate guerrilla band and makes a name for himself as a feared gunfighter. After the war, all the fighters in Wales' group except for him surrender to Union soldiers, but the Confederates end up being massacred. Wales becomes an outlaw and is pursued by bounty hunters and Union soldiers as he tries to make a new life for himself.
Eastwood was fascinated by the novel and he bought the film rights, hoping to star on the film. He got Philip Kaufman involved as screenwriter and possible director, but left after disagreeing with Eastwood in the material adapted to the screen. Kaufman insisted on filming with a meticulous attention to detail, which caused disagreements with Eastwood, not to mention the attraction the two shared towards Locke and apparent jealousy on Kaufman's part in regard to their emerging relationship. This caused Eastwood to take over as the director. Kaufman's firing angered the DGA, as he did most of the pre-production, and sanctioning a $60,000 fine. This resulted in the Director's Guild passing a new rule, known as "the Eastwood Rule", which prohibits an actor or producer from firing the director and then personally taking on the director's role.
The film received critical acclaim, and in subsequent years, is ranked among Eastwood's greatest films. It was also a huge success at the box office, doubling his previous highest grossing film. It was also one of the few Western films to receive critical and commercial success in the 1970s at a time when the Western was thought to be dying as a major genre in Hollywood.
  • Budget: $3,700,000.
  • Domestic gross: $31,800,000. ($174.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $31,800,000.

The Gauntlet (1977)

"The man in the middle of..."
His sixth film. It stars Eastwood, Sondra Locke, Pat Hingle, William Prince, Bill McKinney, and Mara Corday. It follows a down-and-out cop who falls in love with a prostitute, to whom he is assigned to escort from Las Vegas to Phoenix for her to testify against the mob.
While it received mixed reviews, it became another box office success for Eastwood, becoming his now highest grossing film.
  • Budget: $5,500,000.
  • Domestic gross: $35,400,000. ($182.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $35,400,000.

Bronco Billy (1980)

"The most outrageous of 'em all."
His seventh film. The film stars Eastwood and Sondra Locke, and focuses on the financially-struggling owner of a traditional Wild West show and his new assistant.
It became another critical and commercial success for Eastwood, who referred to the film as one of his most affable shoots of his career.
  • Budget: $6,500,000.
  • Domestic gross: $24,265,659. ($91.9 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $24,265,659.

Firefox (1982)

"The most devastating killing machine ever built... his job... steal it!"
His eighth film. Based on the novel by Craig Thomas, it stars Eastwood, Freddie Jones and David Huffman. The Soviets have developed a revolutionary new jet fighter, called "Firefox". Naturally, the British are worried that the jet will be used as a first-strike weapon, as rumors say that the jet is undetectable on radar. They send ex-Vietnam War pilot Mitchell Gant on a covert mission into the Soviet Union to steal the Firefox.
The film received mixed reviews, but it earned almost $47 million, becoming Eastwood's highest grossing title as director.
  • Budget: $21,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $46,708,276. ($151.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $46,708,276.

Honkytonk Man (1982)

"The boy is on his way to becoming a man. The man is on his way to becoming a legend."
His ninth film. It's based on the novel by Clancy Carlile, and it stars Eastwood and his son Kyle. It follows Red Stovall, a country music singer and composer. With his nephew Whit by his side, he travels to Nashville to perform at the Grand Ole Opry in the backdrop of the Great Depression.
While the film received acclaim, it earned just $4.4 million, becoming his second worst performer.
  • Budget: $2,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $4,484,991. ($14.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $4,484,991.

Sudden Impact (1983)

"Dirty Harry is at it again."
His tenth film. The fourth installment in the Dirty Harry series, directed, it stars Eastwood and Sondra Locke. The film tells the story of a gang rape victim who decides to seek revenge on her rapists 10 years after the attack by killing them one by one. Inspector Harry Callahan, famous for his unconventional and often brutal crime-fighting tactics, is tasked with tracking down the serial killer.
The film received mixed reviews from critics, but it earned over $150 million worldwide, Eastwood's first film to pass that milestone. It's also very popular for including the iconic catchphrase, "Go ahead, make my day."
  • Budget: $22,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $67,642,693. ($212.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $150,642,693.

Pale Rider (1985)

"...And Hell followed with him."
His 11th film. It stars Eastwood, Michael Moriarty and Carrie Snodgress. A couple and their daughter, along with a few others, are driven out of Lahood, California, by goons working for a mining baron. However, a stranger enters their life to assist them in their fight.
There was no stopping Eastwood: another critical and commercial success.
  • Budget: $6,900,000.
  • Domestic gross: $41,410,568. ($120.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $41,410,568.

Heartbreak Ridge (1986)

"The scars run deep."
His 12th film. It stars Eastwood, Marsha Mason, Everett McGill, and Mario Van Peebles. The story centers on a U.S. Marine nearing retirement who gets a platoon of undisciplined Marines into shape and leads them during the American invasion of Grenada in 1983.
The film was inspired by an account of American paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division using a pay telephone and a credit card to call in fire support during the invasion of Grenada, and fashioned a script of a Korean War veteran career Army non-commissioned officer passing on his values to a new generation of soldiers. Eastwood was interested in the script and asked his producer, Fritz Manes, to contact the US Army with a view of filming the movie at Fort Bragg. However, the Army read the script and refused to participate, due to Highway being portrayed as a hard drinker, divorced from his wife, and using unapproved motivational methods to his troops, an image the Army did not want.
It received mixed reviews, with some deeming the film as "imperialist propaganda". But it was still another box office success.
  • Budget: $15,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $42,724,017. ($121.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $121,700,000.

Bird (1988)

"There are no second acts in American lives."
His 13th film. The film stars Forest Whitaker and Diane Venora. It is constructed as a montage of scenes from saxophonist Charlie Parker's life, from his childhood in Kansas City, through his early death at the age of 34.
Eastwood, a lifelong fan of jazz, had been fascinated by Parker ever since seeing him perform live in Oakland in 1946. He approached Chan Parker, Bird's common-law wife on whose memoirs the script was based, for input, and she lent Eastwood and arranger Lennie Niehaus a collection of recordings from her private collection Before Eastwood was involved, Richard Pryor was originally cast as Parker.
Despitive positive reviews, it performed poorly, earning just $2.2 million in North America.
  • Budget: $14,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $2,181,286. ($5.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $2,181,286.

White Hunter Black Heart (1990)

"An adventure in obsession."
His 14th film. Based on the novel by Peter Viertel, it stars Eastwood, Jeff Fahey, George Dzundza, Alun Armstrong and Marisa Berenson. It follows a famous movie director, John Wilson, who goes to Africa to make his next movie. He is an obstinate, contrary director who'd rather hunt elephants than take care of his crew or movie. He has become obsessed with one particular elephant and cares for nothing else.
Despite positive reviews, it made just $2.3 million domestically, not even 10% of the budget.
  • Budget: $24,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $2,319,124. ($5.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $2,319,124.

The Rookie (1990)

His 15th film. The film stars Eastwood, Charlie Sheen, Raul Julia, Sônia Braga, Lara Flynn Boyle, and Tom Skerritt. It follows a veteran police officer teamed up with a younger detective, whose intent is to take down a German crime lord in downtown Los Angeles, following months of investigation into an exotic car theft ring.
It received negative reviews for its acting and story, and it became another flop for Eastwood. That's three bombs in a row. Ouch.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $21,633,874. ($51.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $21,633,874.

Unforgiven (1992)

"Some legends will never be forgotten. Some wrongs can never be forgiven."
His 16th film. It stars Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Richard Harris and Morgan Freeman. It follows William Munny, a widower with two young kids, who was once a very vicious gunfighter who gave up everything after marriage. Now, a man named Schofield Kid brings him an offer that he cannot refuse, forcing him to come out of retirement for one last job.
David Webb Peoples wrote the script all the way back to 1976, and it was optioned by Francis Ford Coppola, but he lacked the funds needed to helm it. By Eastwood's own recollection, he was given the script in the "early 80s" although he did not immediately pursue it, because, according to him, "I thought I should do some other things first". Eastwood has long asserted that the film would be his last traditional Western, concerned that any future projects would simply rehash previous plotlines or imitate someone else's work. He dedicated the film to his close friends and mentors Sergio Leone and Don Siegel. Hackman initially refused to participate as his daughters were upset that he was starring in too many violent films, but he became fascinated by the script that he agreed.
It opened with $15 million and it legged all the way to $100 million after playing for almost one year, closing with $159 million worldwide, his now highest grossing film. The film received Eastwood's best reviews of his career, with many considering the film as his magnum opus as director. It received 9 Oscar nominations, and won four: Best Picture and Best Director for Eastwood, Best Supporting Actor for Hackman, and Best Film Editing. So Eastwood, on top of being a reliable box office draw, was now a 2-time Oscar winner.
  • Budget: $14,400,000.
  • Domestic gross: $101,167,799. ($225.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $159,167,799.

A Perfect World (1993)

His 17th film. Kevin Costner, Eastwood and Laura Dern, and follows an escaped convict who takes a young boy hostage and attempts to escape on the road with the child, while being pursued by a Texas Ranger.
The film received critical acclaim, and has appeared as one of Eastwood's best films. The film disappointed in North America, but it earned up to $100 million overseas (Eastwood's first film to gross that much) and ended with $135 million worldwide.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $31,130,999. ($67.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $135,130,999.

The Bridges of Madison County (1995)

"The human heart has a way of making itself large again even after it's been broken into a million pieces."
His 18th film. Based on the novel by Robert James Waller, it stars Eastwood and Meryl Streep. The film is set in 1965, following a war bride, Francesca Johnson, who lives with her husband and two children on their Iowa farm. That year she meets National Geographic photojournalist, Robert Kincaid, who comes to Madison County, Iowa to photograph its historic covered bridges. With Francesca's family away for a short trip, the couple have an intense, four-day love affair.
It received more critical acclaim, and made over $180 million worldwide, becoming his highest grossing film. For her performance, Streep was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress.
  • Budget: $22,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $71,516,617. ($146.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $182,016,617.

Absolute Power (1997)

His 19th film. Based on the novel by David Baldacci, it stars Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Ed Harris, Laura Linney, Judy Davis, Scott Glenn, Dennis Haysbert, and Richard Jenkins. It follows a master jewel thief who witnesses the killing of a woman by Secret Service agents.
It received mixed reviews, and disappointed at the box office.
  • Budget: $50,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $50,068,310. ($97.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $92,768,310.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997)

"Welcome to Savannah, Georgia. A Ccty of hot nights and cold blooded murder."
His 20th film. Based on the book by John Berendt, it stars John Cusack and Kevin Spacey. It follows the story of antiques dealer Jim Williams, on trial for the killing of a male prostitute who was his lover. The multiple trials depicted in Berendt's book are combined into one trial for the film.
It received mediocre reviews, and flopped at the box office.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $25,105,255. ($48.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $25,105,255.

True Crime (1999)

His 21st film. Based on the novel by Andrew Klavan, it stars Eastwood, Isaiah Washington, Denis Leary, LisaGay Hamilton and James Woods. It follows a journalist covering the execution of a death row inmate, only to discover that the convict may actually be innocent.
This was another project that received mediocre reviews and flopped at the box office.
  • Budget: $55,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $16,649,768. ($31.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $16,649,768.

Space Cowboys (2000)

"Boys will be boys."
His 22nd film. It stars Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland, and James Garner as four aging former test pilots who are sent into space to repair an old Soviet satellite.
It received very positive reviews, and earned over $128 million worldwide.
  • Budget: $60,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $90,464,773. ($164 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $128,884,132.

Blood Work (2002)

"He's a heartbeat away from catching the killer."
His 23rd film. Based on the novel by Michael Connelly, it stars Eastwood, Jeff Daniels, Wanda De Jesús, and Anjelica Huston. It follows a retired FBI agent who recently had a heart transplant but still takes up the job to nab a killer.
It was another film with mediocre reviews and flop status.
  • Budget: $50,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $26,235,081. ($45.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $31,794,718.

Mystic River (2003)

"We bury our sins, we wash them clean."
His 24th film. Based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, it stars Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Kevin Bacon, Laurence Fishburne, Marcia Gay Harden, and Laura Linney. It follows three childhood friends who are reunited 25 years later when one of them suffers a family tragedy.
Michael Keaton was originally cast in the role of Det. Sean Devine, and did several script readings with the cast, as well as his own research into the practices of the Massachusetts Police Department. However, creative differences between Keaton and Eastwood led to Keaton leaving the production. He was replaced by Kevin Bacon. This was the first film in which Eastwood would be credited as composer.
The film had a slow roll-out, but it was aided by strong word of mouth, closing with a wonderful $156 million worldwide. It also received acclaim, and was named as one of Eastwood's greatest films. Sean Penn received universal acclaim for his performance, with some naming it among the best acting of the century, particularly for one scene (if you watched it, you definitely know which scene). It received 6 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Eastwood. It won two: Best Actor for Penn and Best Supporting Actor for Robbins.
  • Budget: $25,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $90,135,191. ($153 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $156,595,191.

2024.05.18 02:16 o0TG0o Checking Some Localization - Cold Steel III: Chapter 3 (2/2)

This is the follow-up post to round off the gatherings of errors and omissions I've noted during the third chapter of the game that create dissonances in the script. The preceding posts are listed bellow:

Chapter 3 Continuation

The localization practically completely mistranslated this line. It makes no sense for the guy who works at Theater Turandot to say that he wouldn't be able to make money, as if "kids" wouldn't be able to attend a show. It's just about the group being "shady"/"suspicious." Ridnour should've said: [(Hmm? This group sure looks shady... They even have kids.)]
The localization omits what could've perhaps been a more in character wording, as it is a bit more technical/descriptive, when the name of the location is also said "小劇場《トゥーランドット》." Altina could've said: [Here's our stop--Turandot Theater.]
The localization mistranslates "one digit lower"/"ケタが1つ下," as the opposite. McEnroe should've said: [I'm guessing that if there was one less zero, he woulda done it in a heartbeat.]
「So until you attacked us, we didn't have any reason to report you.」 / 「その意味で、この場で拘束するつもりはないが……」
In the second line, the localization gives the impression that "but now we're going to report you." instead of more strictly "we have no reason to apprehend you."/"拘束するつもりはない." In that sense, Rean should've said: [That's true. We don't have proof that you are doing anything illegal.]; And: [So, we don't have any reason to apprehend you.]
The localization sets up some rather confusing information in this line. First, the idea is, somewhat, simply that there is some time left before sunset. Second, is that the Summer Festival would take place tonight, which is untrue. The original line doesn't even mention the Summer Festival itself, but "summer solstice"/"夏至," which is in the original name for the festival, "Summer Solstice Festival"/"夏至祭." That leads to the idea that they actually have more daylight hours. Angelica should've said: [Well, we do have some time before sunset, as today kicks off the summer solstice.]
The localization added, "I could've slept over!" just to exaggerate Angelica even more.
While not outright wrong, for the character, the localization added "that flirts with any girl with a pulse" to George's warning.
「Including the fact that you came to the aid of Instructor Schwarzer and our students.」 / 「シュバルツァー教官を始め、第Ⅱの生徒が世話になったようだな。」
The localization gives a strange connotation to the second line, as it ties into the first by being started with "Including," not equivalently present in japanese. Why would Claire have told Michael about something that happened very recently, especially when Class VII, Sara, and Angelica went back to camp immediately? The Japanese lines aren't particularly tied the same way, it just remarks about what they've done recently and not about being informed by a thord party. Michael should've said: [It seems that you came to the aid of Instructor Schwarzer and our students.]
The localization actually mistranslates "west"/"西部" for "east"/"東部". Sara should've said: [As for you, Major Irving of the RMP, I've heard YOU played a major part in reestablishing the Imperial Army in the west during the civil war.]
The localization randomly chose to translate "seafood curry"/"シーフードカレー" as "stew." Every other time this is brought up, it is correctly referred to as "curry." Sandy should've said: [Heehee. Tonight's dinner will be seafood curry, made with plenty of fresh Lamare fish!]
The original doesn't have anything to do with comparing Angelica's behavior to Sara's. Far more likely, it's about the Arcus test trips, which happened three years before, comparing Angelica's present and past behavior, as she just says she's "reminded"/"思い出すわねぇ" of "three years ago"/"3年前を." Sara should've said: [All right, all right. This is reminding me of three years ago.]; Or: [*...This is bringing back the headache from three years ago.]
This line shouldn't be referring to any particular "he," as it originally was only about "Ordis' nobility." It's only questioned "where did it go"/"どこへやらだな," relative to "Ordis' nobility's tough times"/"オルディス貴族の不調." Count Carlisle should've said: [I thought Ordis' nobility was having a tough time, too, but here they are, having the time of their life.]
Unlike the localization, this isn't particularly directly suggesting that the jaegers would spend the night with the chapel's nun. She speaks broadly, in the sense of "beautiful ladies"/"美女たち" (of Raquel). Angelica should've said: [Because if they were, they'd most certainly be spending the night with a all the beautiful ladies!]
This is rather wrong with the localization. This should be "talking about Ash," as this is in response to Rean speaking about how he's doing in Thors while he's not present. Sister Olfa should've said: [Heehee. I'm glad I could talk about Ash.]
「I didn't want Ash involved in something so dangerous, so that's why I didn't say anything earlier.」 / 「……アッシュたちには関わって欲しくないから昼間は話さなかったけれど……」
The localization singles Ash out twice in the same line. The original is about "kids"/"子供," and "Ash and the others"/"アッシュたち." Julia should've said: [I'm glad Ash and the other students aren't with you for this. I'd rather children not be involved in something so dangerous.]; And: [I didn't want Ash and the others involved in something so dangerous, so that's why I didn't say anything earlier.]
The localization singles out Shirley in the second clause, when it's supposed to include Gareth, as it is Shirley as a group "her and the others"/"her and him"/"彼女たち." Rean could've said: [We ran into Shirley in Saint-Arkh. I didn't think they'd/both of them would be here...]
The original doesn't single out "Nidhoggr," as it's more about "others besides Nidhoggr"/"ニーズヘッグ以外." Rean should've said: [I'm thinking he might have contact with others besides Nidhoggr--]
The localization omits the mention of it being "8p.m"/"夜8時を." The narration could've said: [As they went out into Raquel once more at 8p.m., the night was certainly going to prove an interesting one.]
「A hundred-thousand mira?」 / 「い、1000万ミラ……」
The localization mistranslates what should be a higher amount "10,000,000"/"1000万." The Dealer should've said: [You could make 10,000,000 mira in a single night, you know?]; And Rean should've said: [Ten-million mira?]
The localization omits actually mentioning the color "purple"/"紫色." Rean could've said: [(That purple shadow).]
「(Should I keep using the Jaeger King's deck?)」 / 「(猟兵王のデッキか……かなりの手強そうだな。)」
The localization creates some confusion with the wording choice. Up to this point, Rutger and Rean were playing with matching decks the former provided. When Rutger says the first line, you'd be led to believe that he's sticking with the deck he has been using while allowing Rean to change to his own. However, the original is far more clear: both of them are changing to their personal decks, not only Rean, as it's "my own deck"/"自分のデッキ," and that the "Jager King's deck"/"猟兵王のデッキ" would be "tough"/"かなりの手強そうだな" to beat. Rutger should've said: [I'm also goin' to use my own, of course.] Regarding the second line, while not entirely wrong, even if it doesn't contradict the context in general, it's still not really what's said. Rean should've said: [(The Jaeger King's personal deck... It might be quite a challenge.)] The original also helps reinforce the idea that "stickin' with mine" shouldn't be referring to the matching decks used initially.
This line sounds rather unnatural with this localization. Not referring to his father or family as a whole before talking about "not attending" the Provincial Council before himself is strange, as "ウチ" would refer to "my family." Kairi should've said: [My father/family won't be able to attend because he's only a baron, but.../we're only from a baron house, but...]
「I'm ready to see your spearmanship!」 / 「バルディアス流槍術の極み見せていただきます……!」
The localization mostly omits references to Wallace's spearmanship (which only happens a single time) as "Bardias style/"バルディアス流槍術." Kurt could've said: [I'd like to study his Bardias style spearmanship in more detail.]; and: [I'm ready to see you Bardias style spearmanship/spear.]
「Just up ahead is where that monster was spotted.」 / 「この先が幻獣らしき影が目撃されたという方面だな。」
「We need to investigate where that cryptid was last seen.」
The localization hardly finds a way to translate the fact that the monster sighting is "幻獣らし"/"similar to a cryptid," "cryptid-like," or "suspected of being a cryptid." Juna could've said: [That might-be-a-cryptid monster sighting.]; Rean could've said: [Just up ajead is where that cryptid-like figure was spotted.]; At least when Sara says it they don't swap it for just "monster."
「It feels a lot more dangerous than the one we fought yesterday.」 / 「昨日戦った手配魔獣クラスを遥かに超えているのは間違いないぞ?」
Anyone would be forgiven if they interpreted that "the one we fought yesterday" was another cryptid, because that's how the localization comes across. The original, necessarily, specifies it as the "wanted monster"/"手配魔獣" imstead of leaving the conotation that it could be "another cryptid." Kurt could've said: [It feels a lot more dangerous than the wanted monster we fought yesterday.]
The localization doesn't specify when this happened, "during the civil war"/"内戦の時に." Ash could've said: [Only time I can think of is when I jacked up some thieves with some friends back in the civil war.]
The localization removes the inclusion of "cryptids"/"幻獣." Sara could've said: [I'd heard of the Empire's cryptids and Magic Knights being sighted in Crossbell.]
The localization mistranslates "before the council"/"会議前に" for "after." Rean should've said: [You think we could talk in person before the council?]
The localization doesn't particularly translate the fact that this is a recurring issue, "practically every day"/"毎日のように" and not a one-time occurrence as it may come across. Silew should've said: [There's this old guy who barfs in the station plaza practically every single day. Isn't that disgusting?]
「It sets my mind at ease knowing you kids didn't have to face it alone.」 / 「教官さんや遊撃士の人も一緒ならアッシュの無茶も少しは安心だよ。」
The localization generalizes this to be referring to all the students, when it's only speaking about Ash. That can be seen in the repeat dialogue in Japanese, with "your recklessness"/"あんたの無茶" and "Ash's recklessness"/アッシュの無茶" being the same. Morley should've said: [Well! It sets my mind at ease knowing you/Ash kids didn't have to face it alone (knowing how reckless Ash is.)]
「Lately, we've been plagued by the illegal activities of a man named Wads. He's the sales manager from a rival shopping complex.」 / 「競合他社である《クライストモール》のワッズ営業部長……彼から違法な妨害を受けておりますの。」
The localization didn't want to name "Wads"/"ワッズ" in the first version of the line. The second line, an alternate for the start of the quest, does it perfectly fine. Ferris should've said: [More specifically, it's the illegal acts of Kleist Mall's sales manager, a man named Wads.]
The localization gets it wrong. It's meant to be "three groups"/"3班," not "groups of three." The scene shows the groups having 3 (Rean, Kurt, and Ash), 2 (Juna and Altina), and 1 (Musse) members. The narration should've said: [They split up into three groups to gather evidence and find the culprits.]
The localization removes the mention of "arsoning"/"放火指示." Juna should've said: [You ordered the arson and defamation of Ms. Ferris' store!]
「(Late duke?)」 / 「(アルフレッド殿……?)」
「If only Lord Alfred were still with us...」 / 「せめてあのアルフレッド殿が生きていらっしゃればな……」
The localization omits using "Lord Alfred"/"アルフレッド殿" in the first line, just as they do in the third one (a repeat line), for no reason. Also leading to it not being used in the second line. If there is a need to 'make' the lines different, there are smarter ways to go it about without omitting the name that is in both. Lord Wilson could've said: [If only the late Duke Alfred/Lord Alfred were still with us...]; and: [If only Lord Alfred/the late Duke Alfred was were still with us...]; Juna could've said: [(Duke Alfred/Lord Alfred)]
The localization removes the mention of "since last year"/"昨年から." Manager Warburg could've said: [We began opening our Summer Festival Ball to commoners last year, and it's proven to be a big hit.]
Considering that the correct context for this is about Musse's parents deaths (the Egrets only have one daughter), with what would be "our daughter and the other(s)"/"娘たち." The localization got it wrong. Count Egret should've said: [Haha... I was just reminded of them/those two/him and my daughter.]
「About ten curims.」 / 「うっす、10クリムくらいっす。」
「No, I gained ten curims.」 / 「いえ、あと10クリムっす。」
The joke is a bit altered in the localization. The third line doesn't outright say "gained," it says it's "still left"/"あと" in the sense of a progression. Wonder could've said: [No, about ten curims left.]
The localization removes any reference to the time when this happened, "yesterday"/"昨日," giving the impression it just happened the very same day. Reni should've said: [Come to think of it, yesterday, she was contacting many different places to confirm something...]
「That's the girl who ordered a five-scoop ice cream yesterday afternoon!」 / 「昨日の昼過ぎに、アイスを5段重ねで注文したお嬢さんねぇ。」
「She talked to me yesterday afternoon, right here, actually.」 / 「──昨日の夕方くらいにまさにここで声を掛けられたよ。」
「Oh, I remember her...She came here yesterday afternoon.」 / 「あら、この子は……昨日夕方くらいに来た子ね。」
「That girl came by in the afternoon.」 / 「その子なら昨日の夕方くらいに来ていたわよ。」
The fact that the localization chose to translate "昼過ぎ" and "夕方" both as "afternoon" creates problems when searching for Millium in Ordis, as there is no distinction. One of the key details of the search is the information about the time Millium visited each restaurant/stall; the first two lines are correct during the "afternoon," but the rest are supposed to be far later in the day, when "evening"/"nightfall"/"sundown"/"sunset" would be much more appropriate. Professor Lughmann should've said: [She talked to me yesterday evening, right here, actually.]: and Miranda should've said: [Oh, I remember her...She came here yesterday evening.]; and: [That girl came by in the evening.]
The localization doesn't even have a "they" to be as direct as the original, with "girls"/"彼女たち." Roselia could've said: [The object they/those two placed in you charge should prove useful just up ahead.]
「You know, for a second, you almost sounded as cool as the Divine Blade of Wind.」 / 「ティオ先輩──というか、風の剣聖の同門でしたっけ。」
The infamous line, at one point, related Tio to the Eight Leaves One Blade. While it is not outright wrong after a patch, it still omits details. The comparison of Rean's dramatic speech is originally to both Tio and Arios, as Juna rewords it to the latter to be more accurate. Especially based on him saying "the sound's echoing"/"音の反響" and "the wind's flow"/"風の流れ." Juna should've said: [You know, you almost sounded like Tio--or, well, you might be closer to the Divine Blade of Wind. Well, you did learn from the same master.]
Again, the localization has Rean show a different dynamic by addressing Duvalie by just her actual name instead of "the Swift"/' 《神速》." Rean could've said: [I've only faced the Swift before, but I'm sure the rest of them share her pride.]
If the localization is supposed to be "Ogre Power"/"鬼の力" then this should refer to "鬼" as such, not "demon". Arianrhod should've said: [Will you become a ogre? Will you run? Or will you accept your defeat?]
"Being of legend"/"伝説の存在" shouldn't be in plural, since this is specifically Arianrhod. Azure Siegfried should've said: [From here on out, you'll be facing dead men and a legend/supreme legend.]
This line feels out of place since Zeo didn't appear on his own for Gaius' reaction to be akin to "another surprise reunion"; they were already together from the moment he returned. Zeo is "wishing happiness"/"祝福して" on "our (Rean and Gaius', not Gaius and Zeo's) reunion"/"オレたちの再会." Gaius should've said: [Seems he is congratulating us on our reunion.]
The localization shouldn't be omitting the information of "Master's letters"/"師からの手紙." Wallace should've said: [Ah, Master told me all about you in his letters, but this is the first time we've met in person, isn't it?]
It shouldn't be "to Juno," but rather "from Juno," "at Junao Naval Fortress"/"ジュノー海上要塞で." The machines are in the fortress. The Provincial Army Soldier should've said: [We've even considered deploying Panzer Soldats from Juno Naval Fortress. There's no such thing as being too prepared.]
The localization singles out Juna from "ユウナたち," which would be the group. The narration should've said: [The students were nervous, but Juna and the others'/Class VII's souvenirs lifted their spirits, and they decided to go to bed early to get ready for tomorrow.]
The localization mistakes who is established to have and agreement with the government, which aren't the Purple Jaegers. The group burned Nidhoggrs contract after winning a battle. The Purple Jaeger should've said: [Sorry, but we'll be doing away with your agreement with the government.]
This line sounds strange when the context is that the group has to progress "on foot"/"running"/"走って," amd not on bikes. Rean should've said: [We need to go on foot/running from here/this point!]
The localization added the aspect of being from the "same region," as there wasn't anything quite like that originally. But also, they omit mentioning the ones the "Red Constelation"/"赤い星座" "makes use of"/"運用している," considering that their military monsters also appear. Sara should've said: [There were not only the Northern Jaegers' cougars, but also the type the Red Constelation uses.]
Because of the previous mistake, this already awkwardly worded line gets more confusing. As the Red Constellation's military beasts were confirmed, this is a reaction to them also being in the canyon, as "even the strongest jagers"/"最強の猟兵まで" "have joined them"/"加勢している". It's not about the Purple Jaegers as the localization would make it seem. Rean should've said: [Tch. Even their corp/one of the strongest corps is here/are helping them, too!]
Again, this also suffers. This isn't supposed to say that the Purple Jaegers were hired by the Society, it only points out that they might be here as well (due to Shirley's connection), as "probably"/"恐らくは", "the Society as well"/"結社も." Given the previous context, it woul be about them being there to help the Purple Jaegers, just like the Red Constelation. Gaius should've said: [It's safe to assume the Society might be here, as well.]
The localization singles out Rean, as it also refers to others in "サラ殿にユーシス殿たちも." Wallace should've said: [Schwarzer and everyone/Sara, Jusis and everyone, listen up.]
The localization couldn't even afford to include Agate in "トヴァルたち." Sara should've said: [And soldiers in the provincial army are all highly trained, too. Besides, they've got Toval and Agate there with them.]
「Indeed. The only battlefield that lies beyond this is within the realm of the Great One.」 / 「ええ──ここから先は《巨イナル一》に関わりし者の領域。」
This is such a big misinterpretation of this line. This isn't outright about Aurelia's journey with swordsmanship or her skill. This is about the fact that after the on-foot battle, now comes the battle between Valimar and the Aion. Just as Arianrhod says, next. Even if this is an aspect touched on later, she is far from saying that outright in this scene, much less Arianrhod agreeing that that is that. Aurelia should've said: [And this... must be the end of my role/as much as I can do/as far as I can go.]
The localization didn't want to use the actual term in play here, "Secondary Contractors"/"準起動者たち." Arianrhod should've said: [And your secondary contractors as well--Are you prepared?]
This isn't about Aurelia, as the "previous Count Le Guin"/"先代ルグィン伯" was her father, as it was established before. Musse should've said: [The previous Count Le Guin and my grandfather have been friends for many years.]
The localization entirely omits the information here about Angelica "stopping by Heimdallr"/"帝都に寄る" "before returning to Roer"/"ルーレに帰る前に." This sets up the fact that it was known, from this chapter's end, that she went to the capital before her disappearance. Sara should've said: [Right, you mentioned you were going to swing by Heimdallr before heading back to Roer...]
It's a strange choice of words, in the localization, to refer to a stigma as "running through your veins" instead of "inherited"/"継いだ," which would've fit both more accurately. Wallace could've said: [But the blood of the warrior Worzel is not the only thing you have inherited.]
The localization singles out Rean in, what could be, "Ashen child and friends"/"灰の小僧たち." Roselia could've said: [It seems I have no choice but to put my trust in Emma, Celine, and that Ashen child and his/their friends.]
The localization didn't want to impactfully call out George's full name, "ジョルジュ・ノーム ." Angelica could've said: [What have you been doing these last three months, George Nome?!]
The localization removes the specifying that Rean's knowledge of the topic of "martial arts"/"武に関すること" is what allows his perceptiveness "to see through"/"お見通し" her troubles. Not just being perceptive in general. Jessica should've said: [Haha. You see right through me, Instructor... just what I expect from *someone well versed in the martial arts.]
The game singles out Alisa in "アリサさんたち." Juna could've said: [I finally understand just how tough Alisa and the others/and everyone must have it...]
「Found Musse and gave her Orchid Hairpin!」 / 「ミュゼを探して胡蝶のかんざし をプレゼントした!」
「My, what an elegant butterfly... I love it!」 / 「ふふ、蝶のあつらえがとても優美ですね。」
The localization mistranslates "butterfly"/"胡蝶" for "orchid"; likely because of "胡蝶蘭," which are orchids. Musse even reacts only to the fact it has "butterflies"/"蝶." Strange, given the name of the item. The narration should've said: [Gave Butterfly Hairpin to Musse!]; and: [Found Musse and gave her the Butterfly Hairpin!]
