1 gap year, starting a 1 year master's program at my state school in the fall that is basically the first year of medical school. That is why this is kind of a fuck it we ball cycle, if I dont get accepted this year and dont fuck up, my chances at my state school are genuinely REALLY good next year.

~30hrs social media manager for a Instagram page educating HS and younger prehealth students on the realities of healthcare and the opportunities at all levels
Hobbies: backpacking, photography, cooking and baking, computers, fitness, and reading
Other relevant info:
School list so far:
Note: You're gonna notice I'm not applying DO. I know everyone's gonna lose their shit over this. 3 reasons why:
  1. Im broke, I can't afford 30+ schools.
  2. DO schools financially exploit the fuck out applicants even more so than AAMC already does, and I just don't wanna deal with that.
    1. Like I said, I'm getting a master's; if I get straight rejected this cycle, I'll be in a much better position to apply across the board in the next one and will apply for DO then.
In no particular order
  1. Iowa Carver (please god just let me in)
  2. Nebraska (where I did SHPEP)
  3. U of Minnesota
  4. UW Madison
  5. Michigan State
  6. Mayo Alix (No shot but I'm still a strong mission fit)
  7. Medical College of Wisconsin
  8. Yale (my one absolutely fuck it why not app, I really like new haven and pizza)
  9. Ohio State (considering removing, outside 10th percentile)
  10. U of Cincinnati (considering removing, outside 10th percentile)
  11. U of Miami Leonard (Consitering removing, outside 10th percentile)
  12. Oregon health and science
  13. Indiana (considering removing, regional bias and outside 10th percentile)
  14. Rutgers, Robert wood johnson (SHPEP is RWJ sponsored, again just trying to leverage anything I can)
  15. Geisel at Dartmouth
  16. Robert Larner at Vermont
  17. University of Missouri - Kansas City
  18. Virgina Tech
  19. West Virginia
  20. University of South Carolina Columbia
  21. Toledo
I really did try to pick schools where my stats were at least on the bell curve and OOS acceptance was above 25%. My concerns overall are that I generally have no idea how to put a school list together and that many of these schools might be super low-yield for OOS. I am also worried that I might have skipped over a lot of schools that I'd be a good mission fit at.
I have had pretty much zero guidance on applying outside of this subreddit, so I really appreciate any and all advice. Be harsh if you have to, I get it.

2024.05.22 02:15 Akanezuki Computer Engineering graduate trying to find a job

I graduated last July 2023. Given the breadth of the things I learned in college, I'm not sure how to structure my resume for entry-level jobs in my field. I never had any work experience outside of my course requirements and personal projects mainly due to COVID-19 and all. Unfortunately, I haven't had any luck with interviews after around 100+ applications. I'd been job hunting in between traveling around the US and other countries for the past several months. I'm not sure if it's something to do with my resume, the fact that I graduated from a university in the Philippines, or both. Any feedback or suggestions are welcome, thanks!

[1 YoE] MEP Engineer seeks helps with resume in effort to transition into Aerospace Industry
Hello! I currently design mechanical and plumbing system in the Architectural/Construction Industry, but I can confidently say its not for me. I've always had an interest for aerospace and took 2 classes during college. I also job shadowed at a fast growing company which I was a great experience. I feel like now is the best possible time to make my transition.
So far I'm having very little luck with my aerospace applications. I have just revised my previous resume using this subs template and updated my summary which was initially 4 unbulleted sentences filled mostly with "fluff" words. I plan to adjust my summary and skills to better adhere to each specific job posting.
Thoughts on my summary? Would it be better to remove my propulsion project and elaborate more on my Senior design project?
Any criticism or questions are welcomed and appreciated. Thanks!

2024.05.22 02:12 Wise_Tumbleweed_1222 Feeling Hopeless 1yr Post-Grad. Should I pivot away from what I studied?

Long read I'm sorry.
I graduated a year ago (class of '23) and have yet to land a job. I got a B.S. in information sciences with a concentration in UX design and a minor in graphic design. I wanted to get a UX/UI/Product design job either local or remote. However, this is proving to be extremely difficult. I probably applied consistently for about 6 months, maybe around 400 applications. Then life stuff happened and I got really depressed between that and the constant rejection. I have only been applying sporadically since.
I currently work a retail job that I actually like quite a bit, but I know it isn't sustainable long-term. I've been doing some serious thinking and I feel like my only option is to pivot at this point. I genuinely don't think I will get a job in UX because of my lack of experience. I wasn't able to do an internship while in school which is really hurting me now (and yes I've looked into them post-grad and 99% of them REQUIRE you to be a student). On top of that the UX market is so saturated with freshers now. I still like UX and want to do it, but quite frankly I'm tired of the fight. I want to give up and move on. Maybe I can come back to UX in the future, but I just don't think it's a viable option for me right now.
One option I've been thinking about is being a data analyst. At least that's related to my degree. I would have to take some online classes as I don't know much about the data side since my concentration was UX. I've found some free or cheap stuff like the "Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate" on Coursera or the "The Data Analyst Course: Complete Data Analyst Bootcamp" from Udemy. Then there are more expensive options provided by various universities (all around 12k). I would prefer the cheaper option obviously but I was wondering if they will give me the same credibility that the more expensive ones would?
Another option is flat-out graphic design. However, I feel like I would have the same struggles as I do currently with my lack of experience. Also thought about web design but then I have to learn code.
Final option is social media marketing. And I'm talking like manage accounts/content creation for a company. It's pretty much the only other thing that doesn't seem crazy insufferable to me. Now this is in a totally different ballpark then my degree so I feel like I'd almost have to go back to school and at least get an associates degree. I do have a teeny tiny bit of work experience with this in my current role, but nothing serious, just taking some pics and making some flyers.
So I guess I'm just wanting some advice on if I should just keep trying for UX or pivot. What people's experiences are relating to my proposed pivots if they were in a similar situation to me. Advice on the free/cheap vs expensive courses. Really any advice is welcome. Thank you.

2024.05.22 02:09 annasfw How is OPS different from the Federal Public Service?

For federal public service (FPS), I know that:
However, I know very little about OPS. So far, all I know/have heard is:
How is OPS similar and different compared to FPS? What should I know? Additionally, if anyone can speak to the 5 points I made for FPS and how they compare in OPS, that would be great.
Thank you!

2024.05.22 02:07 SpiritedRavioli 4 rounds in the interview process - is it smart to share updated resume with new certifications in it?

Hi there! I am 4 rounds deep (šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«) in an interview process with my 5th round (šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«) coming up on Friday. I have been unemployed for 10 months now and this is the closest I've come to not only a job, but my dream role at my dream company, so I'm trying to do everything within my power to set myself up for success without coming across desperate.
The job is a very slight pivot from what I have done in the past, but extremely similar. I definitely am more than qualified, capable and have shown them strong work samples. It's not a major transition and it's a common one in my field.
However, through my conversations, I'm getting this feeling that if I don't get the role it will be due to my lack of experience in precisely what this role does. My thinking is it's already a competitive role at a large company, and in this hunger games of a job market right now - why would they hire me when other applicants have the EXACT experience?
To try to combat this, I've taken a couple certification courses (just LinkedIn Learning, nothing fancy) that are relevent to the role I want. I also revamped my portfolio to include more examples of my past work.
My question: is it dumb to share an updated resume with the hiring manager ahead of my call on Friday? I am already very deep in the process so I don't want it to look like I'm throwing hail mary passes, but I also want to show that I'm making the effort to address what they may see as a potential shortcoming. If I were to send it, I would just keep the note simple saying that I completed some courses and revamped my portfolio so I wanted her to have my latest resume. I would NOT say anything along the lines of "I know I don't have the exact experience so I did this course.. blah blah blah"
Is this pointless and/or not tactful to do at this stage? Thank you for any insight/advice! And thank you for reading my novel!

2024.05.22 02:04 Capital_Reading7321 Switching jobs

I have been working in childcare since I was 17. I started out with babysitting and eventually became a daycare teacher for 2.5-3 year olds. I loved it. Iā€™ve been out of work for about a little over a year due my chronic illness and I know going back to early childcare isnā€™t an option with my immune system being compromised and also being unable to pick kids up/bend over all day now (I may have POTS). I have been thinking about applying at the local boys and girls club. I picked up an application a couple months ago and never turned it in because I was unable to print out some papers I needed. Out of the blue today I decided to call and see if they are still hiring. They are. Iā€™m turning in my application tomorrow morning and am hoping my learning disability wonā€™t be an issue. I have severe dyscalculia so I donā€™t have a diploma or GED yet but some friends who have worked there said they wouldnā€™t care. Worth a shot I guess? Anyways, for those of you that have switched from ECE to older kids how was it? The oldest Iā€™ve worked with was 7 and on the spectrum and mostly kept to himself so I really donā€™t have much experience. I believe the position is for a teen staff but not 100% sure. Iā€™m honestly not worried about pay because I just need a job I can handle lol. Iā€™m so nervous but would love this opportunity. I just donā€™t know what to expect.

2024.05.22 02:03 hecate1002 Worked before applying for PGWP

I finished my undergrad in Ontario last May and before submitting my PGWP in August, I continued working a part-time (considered self-employment) job I already had and also started another job in August. My study permit was expiring in November, so I thought I had time.
I got my PGWP within a month or so. I did mention the self-employed job in the application (in the current employment box). Only recently I found out i was supposed to stop working by the time I got my final grades. My intention was never to break the rules, I was oblivious of this condition.
I still got my PGWP for three years, but now that I learned I wasn't supposed to be working I am concerned for my PR application later. Would this affect my PR application? Or was it mainly a risk for my PGWP?

2024.05.22 02:02 JAM_Passive Apprentice of the Year

Apprentice of the Year

Before getting to the award, I'd like to talk talk about my journey from open shop to the UA.
About 2 years or so ago, before I knew about unions, I was working for an open shop plumbing/HVAC company. $15/hr, mostly residential with the occasional commercial. I liked my co-workers, boss was cool, one of my supervisors was cool, the other was a toss up on any given day. Ladies in the office were cool too. Good all around. I was a helper or apprentice, that title changed whenever the boss wanted it to, made no difference in my pay or hours.
I went to a job with one of the guys, and it was to work on a tankless water heater. Long story short, the water heater was piped in backward. That's not important. What is, is the man we did the job for: Mr. Stevens. He was a retired pipefitter of about 30 years from a UA in Chicago. He had a bunch of union stickers from many different locals on the fridge in his garage where we were working. He asked me if I ever thought about joining the UA. I told him no, and I had no idea what that was. While my coworker was on the phone getting approval for the work from a warranty company, Mr. Stevens talked to me about how the UA gave him better wages, the good retirement that he's currently enjoying with his wife, health benefits, and everything he could advertise. I was listening intently because that sounded wonderful to me. He was describing everything I thought my at the time company was supposed to be.
Before we left, Mr. Stevens gave me his number. He told me if I had any more questions to call or text him, he'll be available. He also told me if I was interested in getting in the UA, he'd write me a letter of recommendation for the board members. I thanked him and we went on our way.
Over the next few months, I looked into unions, the UA specifically. I saw pro-union stuff, and anti-union stuff. I'm here, so as you can see, there was too much good for me to care about any of the anti-union stuff, which were mostly lies or exaggerations. Come March of 2023 when applications opened up, I speedran everything I could have. I called Local 43's office, got all the info I needed. Filled out my application, got my HS transcripts, did the Helmets to Hardhats, got with the VA to work out my GI Bill, smoked the ACT WorkKeys test.
My supervisors did eventually find out about me doing all that. One of the board members owned the plumbing company next to my boss's and I guess they're friends and talked to each other, and my boss talked to my supervisors. The cool one made a joke about the dues I'd have to pay (exaggerated the amount) and the other one was visibly not pleased and made a sly remark about it. Fortunately nothing negative came of it for me.
Anyway, finally, the interview. Easily the only thing I was stressed out about. I got a fresh cut, bought a nice (but cheap) blue suit, bought a nice pair of lowkey business casual shoes, bought a cheap black tie, even lightly put on cologne. I walked in to the waiting room and thought I fucked up. The other interviewees had on jeans, those nice dress(?) cowboy boots, and tucked in button-up long sleeve shirts. I make no exaggeration when I tell you, I was the ONLY one in a suit and tie. Internally I'm freaking out wondering "What was I thinking? It's the South, I should have dressed like them! The board is gonna see me an think I'm some prim & proper (derogatory) Yank!" An assumption I made based on the reaction I got when I joined a Fire Department and I told one of the Firefighters I'm from NY. Fortunately, this was not the case.
Nothing to be done about it at that point, I get called into the room. I've been through a board or two in the Army, so I knew I could fake it at least, but I'm still nervous. What I did do immediately that I'm still proud of to this day is I remembered to shake everyone's hand and look at them. Just like I've practiced, a nice firm handshake and eye contact. Sat up straight, hand positioning, made eye contact when answering, answered audibly and clearly, practiced it all beforehand and executed.
They did get Mr. Stevens' letter of recommendation and had me tell them about the work we did for him. And they wanted me to tell them about my time in the Army. That took up a large portion of time thankfully. No matter where you go, men love a good story. Around the last 5 -10 minutes, they had me tell them about my previous company. I didn't badmouth the company, I didn't have much negative to say about it anyway, aside from the hours being wonky occasionally and learning being difficult sometimes if they guy you're with didn't feel like teaching you that day. Sometimes, you really were just a helper. Hand them the tools and move back.
Before I left, one of the men stopped me at the door and told me he was glad I dressed like a professional. He said "Some of these guys come around here and dress like they're about go to the bar and not an interview. I know this is blue collar work, but we're still professionals. Just a blazer goes a long way, and we appreciate that you took this seriously."
All that work (and I'm not gonna lie, there's no doubt in my mind that me being a veteran damn near guaranteed me in) paid off as me and the rest if the 1st years swore in. And starting at $17.60 ain't too bad.
Fast forward to today. Today was the last day of class at my Local. They did awards, congratulations, and all the flair that comes with it. Among the awardees, was me. I haven't earned an academic award since elementary. By the time I got to HS, I realized schooling (at least traditional) isn't something I enjoy or care for, and my effort (or lack of it) reflected that. I stopped doing homework altogether as it was only 15% of our grades, I did well on tests and quizzes, and did classwork depending on length/difficulty and necessity. Graduated HS stress free and got the same diploma as everyone else.
This was not the case during this past school year. I put in the effort for this. I paid attention and asked for help. Especially with math, I asked for a lot of help with math. And I suppose that showed and reflected. I earned Apprentice of the Year for the 1st Year Class. I feel really good about it. I intend to put my ass into and try to earn it for the next 4 years. Joining the UA is one of the best decisions I've ever made. I fucking love the UA, and I love my Local Union 43.
Note: I still talk to Mr. Stevens to this day. I sent him a picture of my award and he's treating me to dinner this weekend.

2024.05.22 01:58 cr33kblu3s Struggling with myself

I got my license in March and have been job searching ever since. I had a specific salon I wanted to apprentice for that ended up falling through so I put an application in to another salon for an apprenticeship. I hadn't heard back for a few weeks, ended up calling and a few days later scored an interview.
The interview went extremely well and I was told they would be in contact soon. It will have been a month since my interview this Friday. When I first called before my interview I was told the hiring process was going to take a very long time, so I was shocked to get an interview so fast.
But now...I just feel like I'm stuck in limbo. They're still hiring so I at least know that isn't an issue and it is a very popular salon and both people who do the hiring process also work full time. I keep trying to tell myself it's not abnormal, especially after my best friend didn't have a salon get back to her until 2 or 3 months later.
I'm having such a hard time with myself and my self worth. It's so difficult to not have the fear that I'm not going to hear back/not get the job. I feel like I'm being so picky but I keep telling myself that I'm doing the right thing by not throwing myself into a salon that's going to make me miserable. Is it common for salons to take so long with the hiring process?

2024.05.22 01:56 excorpsexd Why do I feel like I'm a bad software engineer?

I have been a software engineer for about 2 years. I work primarily in C# on backend applications. Ive been with my current company for about a year and today I made a mistake that crashed production. After the commit was reverted, I immediately got to work trying to fix my code. This incident is not the issue but rather made me aware of how I really feel.
I am not getting better at software engineering.
I wasn't one of those students who got internships, recruiter DMs, and job offers in school. I just kind of kept to myself, focused on school and graduated with decent grades. Nothing amazing but nothing terrible. I have made maybe 1 or 2 personal projects of my own for things that seemed interesting or fun but that's about it. I have 2 years of experience and I just don't feel like I'm becoming a better engineer.
I am learning how my team does things, how the code works, how to fix recurring issues, etc, but I don't feel like if I got a new job tomorrow, I would be any better than when I started this one.
I guess I just feel stuck. I want to see noticeable improvement and I want others to see it too. I just don't know what to do. I figure I'm early in my career so the snowball has yet to get all that much bigger but its just demoralizing when I see others doing amazing things (projects, jobs at cool companies, etc.) and im just here.
I don't want to be mediocre at my profession but I don't know what im doing wrong. Can anyone give me some advice?

2024.05.22 01:53 stockholmssbm Passed A+ Core 1 today - 731/900 - here's how I did it

Hello all. So yes I passed the a+ core 1 today. I'm very happy with that but the primary reason for creating this post is to help people like me when I first started looking into this 3 months ago trying to figure out the best way to do things. I hope that by sharing my methods for preparing for this exam that it may help someone else that was in my position a few months ago.
If you're like me and you you take or took picking up a plus or another certification seriously, you probably have read a bunch of stuff on Reddit about how people passed and what they did or even people that failed and what they did or didn't do. And the question I had was, what should I do?
I work from home at what is basically a help desk job so I have a lot of downtime. I set out to do 2 hours a day of studying. This included watching videos, looking up information about material that would be covered on the exam, making flashcards, and using the flashcards. At first I started with Mike Myers course on udemy. I then took some practice tests on examcompass.com. those practice exams are 25 questions and therefore short, and cover about two and a half topics that are relevant to the exam. I did Mike Myers course and realized that there was a bit of information that was not covered. So after making flashcards off of the notes from his course, I then went and watch Professor messer's course. I took notes on everything Professor Messer covered that I didn't know from Mike Myers or anything that I felt I needed more practice on. From that giant piece of notes I made flashcards out of that and practice those ones. I then did a bunch of those practice exams on examcompass.com and I made flashcards out of the concepts and if applicable, questions that I just straight up got wrong on those. The flash card website/service I used is called Quizlet and I like it because it has a mobile app that I find easy to use and whatnot. It also has good compatibility with the desktop version so I would use the desktop version to create my flashcards and then use the mobile version to actually study them. So I'd study them when someone was driving me somewhere or basically anytime that it was a good time for me to do it just to make sure I hit my 2 hours every day. I did 2 hours a day for 2 months doing these sorts of activities. I used an app a Time logger on my cell phone to track how much time I had spent studying in a given day. You can use the app to track how much time you spent studying in the current day and in other days. It's very easy to use in this app kind of carried me if I'm being honest
a random note I do have pretty bad inattentive ADHD but I didn't let that be an excuse. I just buckled down and I did it and it was hard to focus at times but I just did it anyway because I really was committed to passing.
I think there's lots of ways that you can successfully go about doing this. Other people have talked about how they've done it on this subreddit successfully and I just wanted to in detail how I did it to perhaps provide someone like me the means for a successful study and preparation strategy.
If you have any questions about my exam or my means of studying or if you would like some of my study materials I'm happy to provide whatever. Spent basically $15 on the udemy course and the money for the voucher for the exam and that's it so you really can self study basically for free. I probably could have passed without Mike Myers course but to be honest I probably will go for Core 2 by using two courses again. I want to minimize all chances of failing within my control, that's just how I do it. Thanks for reading!

If i acquired 65 days of unemployment during my opt period. How many total days of unemployment do I get during STEM OPT. My current job is ending by the end of August due to the school shutting down. They were willing to sponsor me as well. Anyway, Iā€™m currently waiting for decision on my STEM OPT.
Despite reaching out to my local senator here in NY. There hasnā€™t been any update on my STEM OPT application.

2024.05.22 01:52 Head-Carpenter8835 Fired from first job looking towards the future

Hello I am a 17 year old who just got fired from their first job. It was for a complete bs reason but in Florida where I am located they donā€™t need a reason to fire someone. It was a small local family owned pizzeria I am wondering in the future on job applications will I have to put that I was fired from this job or can I just say I quit the job?

2024.05.22 01:51 Many-Candidate-2287 AITA - Referral Gone Wrong

After a tough year of being out of work, Iā€™ve finally landed a job at my dream company! šŸŽ‰ This has been an incredibly challenging and emotional journey, filled with countless applications, rejections, and moments of doubt. During this rough patch, I confided in a friend and former colleague with whom Iā€™ve maintained communication. Weā€™ve been references for one another over the years. Despite knowing my struggles, she never offered any help or even a referral, and I didn't ask because I didnā€™t want to burden her.
Fast forward to now, I used her as a reference, and guess what? I just got the job offer! I'm beyond thrilled and still in shock. But hereā€™s the kicker: sheā€™s now asking me to refer her for roles at my new company, even though I havenā€™t officially started yet. She even went on the companyā€™s website and sent me two roles sheā€™s eyeing, one in Recruiting and one in HR. Mind you, she had never heard of this company beforeā€”theyā€™re a small seed company with only 20 employees, and Iā€™m hire #21.
I feel a mix of emotions ā€“ hurt, confusion, and maybe a bit of anger. When I was at my lowest, she didnā€™t extend a helping hand, but now she expects me to go out of my way for her. Iā€™m just trying to get back on my feet and establish myself in this new role. I'm elated to have finally landed a position after so many applications and rejections, and now this situation is dampening that joy.
Is it just me, or does this seem incredibly insensitive? Iā€™m feeling conflicted about this whole situation. Am I wrong for feeling this way? What would you do in my shoes? Would love to hear your thoughts!
