2024.05.11 17:02 maestrojed Seniors who are used to cable's guide and DVR UI - Recommendations?

My parents need to cut the cord. They currently have Spectrum which is too expensive and terribly unreliable.
I am asking for recommendations as I care most about the UI. That is hard to figure out from product web sites.
I am looking at Roku, Tivo, DirectTV (without the dish)?; really anything.
Here is my criteria, in order: - Must have a solution for local channels - Must be able to get sports channels - Must have a DVR solution - Ideally would have a "Guide" like UI for local and sports channels. - Cannot be a "cast from your device" only solution. They need a remote and UI on the TV. - Easy of use. Even UI's that seem very simple can be very confusing to Seniors with they differ greatly from what they are use to. - Minimize of switching "Apps". Any that minimize switch from apps like "pluto" to "netflix" to "DVR", etc.
Other details: - Obviously, Stream/data base options are fine. - They have a Vizio TV that has built in apps. - They are not technologically inclined. - They can not figure out "casting" - I do not live in town, I doubt there are any tools that help me from a distance, but if I could control their DVR when stuff goes awray or something, that would be cool. Seems unlikely.
Nothing if going to fit all this, but if you feel you have experience with a product close or best, I would love to hear from you? Or others trying to help seniors.
Thank you!

2024.04.30 03:34 keith48847 Dish Anywhere dvr % not updated

When I start up the Dish Anywhere app on my iPhone it usually won’t show recent recordings that I know are recorded. It also doesn’t show the percentage of space used on the Hopper 3 dvr. I have to close the app and reopen it as many as 10 times until I see the percentage and it will show the most recent recordings. Does anyone know a better way for the app to show up to date info?

2024.04.12 22:07 cdeluc Optimum sells AppleTV boxes but none of their Techs know anything about them. Why am I not surprised?

This is long, I'm sorry, but I wrote it with the intention of emailing it to Optimum only to find that they don't supply any email addresses.
So.... thanks, in advance, for sharing in my frustration and anger
Dear Invisible Optimum Assistance
I have been trying for a few days now to fix an issue with my DVR service but, it seems that, because I am using an AppleTV box, (which, mind you, was purchased FROM the Optimum store), no one seems to know what I'm talking about, let alone, how to fix it.
I've been through "basic" troubleshooting steps over a dozen times with a half dozen technicians. I've had my issue "escalated" to the 2nd level of technicians and then escalated AGAIN to the "engineering" department. I have been told each time that they are SURE that THEIR team would be able to fix the issue “no problem”. That didn't happen. I was ALSO told to return the AppleTV box to the Optimum store and that they will give me a "new one, not a crappy refurbished one." His words exactly.
When I went to the Optimum store, the two "customer service" agents that I spoke with told me that they don't deal with AppleTV boxes that I would have to take it to the Apple store. I insisted that I had spoken with a technician on the phone just that morning and he told me that his team could NOT find the problem and to take it back to Optimum and they would replace it. I asked the customer service agent in the Optimum store to please read the notes in my account and she will see that this is an ongoing problem. She did, but then told me there was nothing that she could do. Policy is policy after all. Since I paid off the device (in FEBRUARY) I now own it and if I wanted a replacement I'd have to buy another one.
I then reached out to Apple who stated that it couldn't be the AppleTV box, because they don't offer DVR service and that is where the problem lies.
Now, please let me take you back a couple of weeks ago to when the issue began.
I began to notice that when I would watch a recorded show, it works fine, until I paused it. If it remained paused for a minute or more, when I tried to continue the show, it will not play. There are THREE options when you try to resume a show: PLAY, Keep Until, and Delete. I can click on EITHER "keep" or "delete" and there is no issue. They both work fine, but PLAY will just not respond.
Now, as I've stated, I tried some basic troubleshooting myself as I’ve had Optimum boxes for years and am very familiar with the multitude of issues that seem to plague your devices. So I reboot the box, unplugged the box, rebooted my own network, made sure remote was fully charged, I even turned off the Optimum app, rebooted and turned it back on. Nothing worked.
We lived with it for a while because, quite frankly, I never had much faith in Optimum tech support, but then it just became too much. Why should I have to "live with it?" That's when I reached out to Optimum Tech Support.
Each technician that I was transferred to had me do the exact same troubleshooting steps that I attempted on my own, only to come up empty. They ALL told me that they would escalate the ticket. The representative from the next group told me he was CONFIDENT that they would be able to fix it. Again, no they weren't. They, too, "escalated" the ticket with promises of 99% surity that the problem will be fixed. When I asked about the other 1%, the technician laughed and said, “don’t worry about it, these guys are the engineers.”
Now, last night, watching TV in the bedroom, I tried to pick up a show that I had been watching in the den.
Can you guess what happened?
YES, it did the SAME THING. So now it’s failing on TWO boxes. Boxes purchased from Optimum don’t forget. Yet it seems that Optimum staff has NO IDEA how to fix the problem and I have to continue dealing with subpar service.
I don’t know what else to do or where to turn. I am ready to cancel my service with you and move to YouTubeTV but when I inquired, in the Optimum store, about canceling my TV service (and just keep the internet line) I was told that they don’t do that there and gave me a phone number to call.
SERIOUSLY?
I don’t understand how you can be the ONLY service that I have to choose from (Verizon Fiber is still not available in my area, I don’t want a Dish and I’m too far from the City to benefit from an antenna) yet your employees cannot help when something goes wrong with devices that you are quick to sell. If you can’t support it, don’t sell it! Now, if I had an Altice box, I know that I can just trade it in for a refurbished one and then again and again, ad nauseum. But that’s not the right answer.
I had been a HUGE fan of TiVo and used them for years because they TRULY understood what a user wants and they delivered. They also had a support staff who knew how to fix their devices. Then I began having problems with the cable cards (provided by the cable company - that's you) that my TiVo box needed to receive YOUR signal. I was told by one of your employees that you stopped making the cards ten years prior. So every single one of them was just being recycled until they just completely failed. If that’s not a monopoly, I don’t know what is.
But, I digress…
So, I really don’t know where I stand with your “engineering” department, but I’m VERY familiar with being dismissed with a “promise” of a better outcome. I have yet to receive a response from them. They DID “promise” 24 hours, so I think there may be an hour or two left.
Please tell me what to do next? I will NO LONGER pay you money to be dismissed if I have a problem that a quick reboot won’t fix. I’ve been with your company since Cablevision. You change the name, promise a better experience and then failed. Then you change the name, promise better service and failed. All the while raising prices and charging fees for everything. I think if I sneeze, there will be fee on my next bill.
I know that I am just ONE customer and losing just ONE customer doesn’t effect your “bottom line.” So I know that I don’t really matter. But I will not go down without a fight. I’m so tired of paying huge corporations for services that sometimes work and sometimes don’t. Would you accept a customer sometimes paying their bill and sometimes not?
I plan to make sure that every single person reading this knows that
  1. not every customer is happy.
  2. Sometimes you CAN’T fix the problem. (so make it right)
  3. You will escalate tickets until the customer just gives up
and, finally…
  1. no one really cares. They get paid either way.
Thank you for listening.
Do you happen to know the phone number of the person who can actually cancel my service?
Uness, of course, there is an early termination fee…

2024.04.12 04:24 BigOrangeVol98 They finally got the library right!

I’ve seen some complaints today on the new library. But I’m really not sure why. I feel like this is how the library should have always been. It reminds me of my old Dish DVR which was the best in the business. When I go to my library the only thing I want to see are the unwatched shows that I’ve recorded. Once I’ve watched the show I no longer want to see it. And I don’t like sifting through all the shows I’ve recorded and already watched, just to find something I haven’t watched. Now I just hope it stays this way (it seems to change frequently).

2024.03.29 17:02 ShreddinPB Streaming box with DVR?

I dont think this is a thing, but is there a streaming box like Shield Pro that can also DVR a show from a app? My apartment building took down our DTV dishes and I can only stream shows now from the DirecTV app. Im a huge fan of a sports team and would like to be able to record the game when I cant watch it live.

2024.03.29 02:41 blowingtumbleweed Doing my 5 day trial (from YTTV)

I was, for years, a DirecTV dish guy. Then it got super expensive and the quality sucked it it rained so I took a comcast deal. So it's been a while for me. I have, for the last year, been with TTTV. For the most part, it was okay, though lacking. Root Sports is the main difference as I live in the PNW and baseball is only shown there and YTTV doesn't have it.
I'm trying to compare the PQ right now between the two. There are clearly some channels better on one than the other (I'm looking at, of all things, the food network right now and it's not as clear as YTTV is with the same channel...not sure why.)
Happily, I can still get Sunday Ticket via YouTube, though it will be a bit more expensive.
So DTV people: what should I be noticing? I signed up for 5 day trial of the full meal deal (Premiere) which would mean I'd go drop my paramount+ subscription and my Max subscription as I can use the apps with my DirecTV login, correct? (though if I understand it, my Max experience will be not as awesome as signing up directly with them)
Also, if I stick with this, what does getting a gemini box do for me? (I am currently watching via an AppleTV box).
Update: not having profiles is a big miss -- one solid thing youtubetv has is that my DVR isn't polluted with the other people in the house.

2024.03.23 01:21 jjsupc Crazy controls, unreliable DVR

Just the past month our Dish controls have gotten a mind of their own; I try to fast forward and it’s like I flipped a switch instead of pushing on one: the thing just keeps going forward (or rewinding) until I can hit the hold button and stop them. The volume control is out of control too: we set it to 41 on the volume scale, and somehow, it climbed up to 77, blasting us out of bed. The DVR & 2 Joeys are performing their own routines too; at least once a week, one or both of the Joeys will reboot; at times, the Hopper reboots too. Every now and then the Hopper reboots alone for no apparent reason. I have some old Dish controls that work great for this, because there are separate FF and Skip buttons on them, but I only have 2, and besides, the newer ones should work correctly. Anyone else run across anything like this ? Could it be in the software ? I can’t believe we need new controls & Hopper, not that old. Any comment/suggestions appreciated.

2024.03.19 17:51 DallasDope Help: Service codes 771, 772

This past week my DirecTV Satellite service went out. The weather has been clear and we've not changed anything with the setup of any of the recievers. Both the Satellite Dish and cabling are all seemingly fine.
I've tried the red button reset on the HR44 DVR with no luck.
What are some additional troubleshooting steps I might try before having a tech come out?
Any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

2024.03.15 22:25 KingOfTheFraggles DISH is telling me to get Directv instead.

I recently moved and was unable to get the DISH network switched immediately. Now, 2 months later, when I called DISH to get it set back up they said that the reception level for DISH at my new address is only 65% but that they could alternatively hook me up with Directv with much better reception. I guess my questions are:
-How is the DVR service in comparison? (DISH allows for 16 things to record at once, with 500+ hours of storage, and their DVR service is universal throughout the entire house.)
-Is the channel lineup as good? (I know Directv is known for its sports lineup but we do not watch any sports so we have no use for those channels.)
We're currently settling for Spectrum and it's like cable from the 90's, just the worst. Thanks.

2024.03.12 00:10 Rivera251996 Plex DVR with antenna is awesome, but what about with cable?

I recently added Plex DVR functionality with a 4 tuner HDhomerun DVR. Antenna from Amazon “Direct Clearstream V2” is the brand and when all wired properly it picks up over 100 free channels in my local Los Angeles, CA area. I get great video quality and recording functionality works flawlessly. I can stream my local news directly to my phone from an antenna located from home. This gives me access to run the treadmill at my local gym without have to run on a specific treadmill near the TV with the news channel of my preference.
The tuner states it can be connected via cable instead of antenna. Does anyone have experience with Plex and cable TV? I would like to combine this functionality with a service like direct TV, dish, or spectrum. I’ve seen and tested antenna, but would like to know if it works with these providers. it’s seems to be more commonly used with an antenna.

2024.03.08 18:50 driven01a Cannot set recordings using Dish Anywhere on OTA channels

So this used to work fine until about 3 weeks ago. Then all of a sudden it fails whenever I try to set a recording from Dish Anywhere. (Web, or device). "Failed to set recording". It works fine to set recordings from satellite based shows.
So I contacted Dish ... they said I needed a new DVR. They sent that to me. Spent 3 days transferring recordings ...
After ... same problem. So they say they kicked the issue to engineering. (Which means it will be ages if it ever gets fixed).
Is anyone else seeing this issue? It gets very hard to justify keeping this if I can't remotely set my network recordings.
Thanks in advance.

2024.03.06 00:48 Braidaney Watching as it released vs binge watching

I finally got around to finishing the show and the ending made me think back to when I first watched the show. It was a journey and never would I have ever guessed how everything would end.
I remember just barely getting into anime recording every new episode on my dish network dvr and just day dreaming and wondering about where the story was going, and mulling over details from every episode trying to guess at the truth of the titans and the world. Literal years passing between new seasons not even knowing for sure if there would be more seasons. Rewatching old episodes and loving every minute. There was a certain magic to that journey that I think greatly enhanced my experience of the story.
I decided to binge watch the series after finishing it, to experience its completed glory and it was a totally different experience. Things I swore took much longer or events I swore were no where near each other passed by in an instant leaving little time to wonder or imagine. My experience is already hampered by the fact that I’ve seen everything but I worry new and future viewers won’t have as much fun with the story as I did.
I don’t really have a point to this it’s just something I was thinking about, and it makes me wonder just how many other shows I’ve stolen the magic from by binge watching or is it the same exciting experience in a shorter period of time. I’d love to hear people’s thoughts, especially if you watched the show later and got to experience everything in a shorter period of time.

Pestle I found in a creek many years ago. When I saw it my Jaw dropped! I had totally forgotten I had it!
It's 3 sided, tapered, and there's a slight dimple in the very bottom. It's hard to see the usage points because of the creek stain, but when the light hits it right you can see how worn it is!
