2024.05.21 17:14 PrtyShrkPhil Gamma (app) on iOS

For those that haven't heard, there's a new app that's a mobile PS1 emulator called Gamma on iOS (might be on Android too, not sure). As soon as I heard about it, I obviously had to try out LOD and ladies and gentlemen... WE GOT EM.
Download it and try, don't download it and try, doesn't bother me I'm not #sponsored or anything lol. Just would be remiss if I didn't share my now mobile nostalgia serotonin with the community!

2024.05.21 13:24 OhmaDecade I just bought a pre-loved Switch light and I am enjoying it!

So I am a Playstation guy. Only played Nintendo when I was young (Game Boy and Family Computer). I also emulated Advance and DS for Castlevania games and that's it. I played from PS1 to PS4 (skipped PS3 because no rental shops here would rent a PS3.)
And so I bought a used Switch Lite coz I can't afford an OLED let alone a brand new Lite. You see, I am a Final Fantasy guy and action adventure dude (played Tomb Raider 2013 up until the last installment, Witcher 3, Skyrim, Uncharted trilogy, Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Ghost of Tsushima. You get the games that I like to play.
So surprisingly, last night, I tried playing Kirby. Heck I loved it! Haha! I never played Kirby on Family Computer and SNES. It's just here. Can't imagine at 36 years old that I'll be enjoying this Kirby game. Lol!
By the way, thanks Nintendo for this handheld Lite. I love how compact it is. I'm gonna try to buy the OLED if I get the money.
P.S. I sold my mid-range bulky-ass gaming PC for this. Lol! And coz I need that extra money too. I also have an Xbox Series S. This is my FIRST Nintendo system

2024.05.21 10:33 Nightstalker1993 Standalone duckstation auto load state with Daijisho

Hi guys, new to the emulation world and recently just moved my main ps1 emulator from Retroarch Swanstation to standalone Duckstation. Now the biggest issue for me is that launching the game with daijisho won't trigger the auto load state while launching the game via Duckstation directly will trigger a prompt asking if you want to load state or clean boot so it is definitely auto saving upon exit.
I've searched around and read that changing the player am settings for '--ez resumeState' to '1' should solve it but in my case it doesn't.
Is there anyway to allow auto load state when launching games with daijisho?
Thanks guys!

2024.05.21 06:09 Dylz42 Does PS1 CT have long loading times on emulators

I want to play Chronotrigger on my retro-handheld in the best possible way, I heard that the PS1 version of the game is really good except it has crazy load times. I want to know if these load times carry on in emulators such as Duckstation or if anyone has made a patch for the game to load faster.

2024.05.21 04:10 JC-DisregardMe I just finished Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, and I had a mostly-great time

Wasn't long ago I was in here writing a recent post about my "well, that was OK and now it's over" experience of playing Breath of Fire III. On the request of a friend I played BoF3 concurrently with, I made my immediate next JRPG pick the PS1 remake of the first Lunar game.
Well, as the post title has indicated to you, I had a much better time with this game! It's interesting to have gone right from BoF3 to Lunar when in a number of ways, Lunar kind of feels like the inverse of BoF3. For those not concerned about reading my BoF3 post, I'll quickly go over what I mean:
My biggest criticism for BoF3 was that it felt like the game's story and characters, while obviously having potential with their interesting themes and narrative ideas, were seriously let down by the game's mediocre English localization. The English script just felt consistently like a basic rush job to make the game text readable with no further care put into making it read well in English. As a result I remember almost nothing in the way of specific dialogue moments and exchanges, and almost none of BoF3's characters stand out even in my very recent memory as having any kind of distinct character voice.
In contrast, Lunar's localization (while not making the optimal choice in every situation) is just loaded with sincerity and personality in every friggin' scene of the game. I care about these characters, I want to carry on through the game to see where they go and how their stories progress. This is all a difference of how much care and effort went into conveying the ideas and themes of the story effectively specifically for an English-speaking audience. As far as I know this subreddit is one of those communities I can count on to understand why it's so important to have a quality localization that reshapes the script that way to adapt to a different language - it's not rote "take the words and swap in their equivalents in the other language", which is really what a lot of BoF3's English script felt like. Sure, Lunar's story is very fantasy-RPG-standard and not exactly reaching for high heights in complexity, but I'm very much willing to forgive that in the face of just how genuine it is.
Now, to turn things around the other way, my biggest point of praise for BoF3 was its gameplay and the depth of the battle and leveling systems. So many different ways you can spec your party members and build up their fighting styles, and so many ways to break the game's balance in half with the right setups.
Lunar's gameplay is acceptable. It's functional, it gets the job done. I can't really give it any stronger praise than that. Very, very standard 90s JRPG fare, and it never really reaches any higher than that. The battle system is OK, doesn't really have any glaring problems. Not the biggest fan of how the localization evidently boosted the game's difficulty, since it sort of feels like it skews the balance a fair bit. Battles were pretty consistently "there is one obviously ideal strategy here, just do that in every fight" for the whole game with very few exceptions.
For nearly every boss in the game, Alex's best strategy is just buffing up his attack and then using the heavy damage single-target special attack he's had since the beginning of the game. Nash is best off just constantly using his AOE electricity attack from the moment he first joins you to nearly the very end of the game, with the eventual option of swapping it out for his "just hit all enemies at once" electric attack. Unless I'm mistaken, his status effect spells are basically useless against pretty well all bosses, and with regular enemies it's almost always going to be ideal to just deal damage and finish them off instead of bothering with unreliable statuses that mostly target just one enemy. I think I remember exactly one time in the game that I actually got any useful effect out of trying to land a status on anything. Mia can buff attack and defences for others in boss fights or just fling out multi-target damage with little reason to do anything else. Kyle just hits things really hard. Jessica initially has a cool niche with healing spells obviously similar to Luna's but also a reasonable capacity for physical damage output, but toward the end of the game she's pretty much going to be locked into the heal bot role.
All this means that battles become really boring not all that long into the game and only very rarely pose a challenge or require any deeper degree of strategy. With how ridiculously abundant MP-restoring items are by the endgame, I don't have much reason not to just have everyone persistently throw out the best damage they've got while keeping steady healing from Jessica going.
The inventory and equipment systems are annoying, it's super irritating to keep getting pieces of equipment that can only be equipped by one or two party members but which give no indication of who can use them. Means I have to keep navigating to the "give to other character" submenu, passing the item off between characters, backing out, going to the equipment menu, and just hoping it's usable by whoever just got it, because if it's not I have to repeat the whole process.
Still, since I am playing this game in the modern day, I can very easily alleviate a lot of this stuff with emulator speedup and/or savestates.
Now, with my usual string of bunched-up criticism paragraphs done, I'm just gonna randomly gush about a few things.
fucking love the soundtrack, it's fantastic and it was pretty cool to learn who the composer was - I'm a gigantic Ace Attorney fanboy, and Noriyuki Iwadare was involved with the soundtracks of like half the games in that series
fucking love the whole sequence as you leave for Meribia early in the game and Alex convinces Luna to come along, after which she proceeds to do like an entire Disney "I want" song and it's great
fucking love how unabashedly and sincerely idealistic the whole presentation of the story and world is, same kind of feeling I got from the relentlessly optimistic adventurous spirit of Skies of Arcadia
fucking love how the game isn't even remotely trying to hide the reveals that Luna is actually Althena and Nall is a dragon
fucking love how utterly clueless Alex is about Ghaleon being blatantly and cartoonishly obviously evil
fucking love how in-character it was for Nall to just wait around like a dozen turns before ever bothering to revive Nash during Royce's boss fight in the endgame when I was just letting him stay unconscious because it was more convenient than trying to keep healing him while he was a complete liability for most of that fight
Game's like an 8/10, I thought about maybe 8.5 but figure I shouldn't really downplay the significant areas in which the gameplay is lacking just because emulation benefits made them easier to deal with.

Made a post before but deleted it because I went ahead and bought it
So basically just curious to what I can do to this thing? I see videos saying change out the OS, and the SD cards. I got the one with 2 SD cards from the website to get extra games. But if ima have to change the SD cards out, and the OS, im curious to what I do from there? Im trying to play a lot of PS1 mainly, I got Duckstation on my pc, but just curious if thats an option to add to the device? (from my understanding it runs different emulators for different consoles?) And has anyone tried to run hacked/modded roms/ISOs on it? Im trying to play Gran Turismo 2 A-Spec mod on the go
Im happy to join the community, I loved my coworkers RG35XX! I just wanted analog sticks and all reviews said its the same exact console but with sticks.

2024.05.20 15:12 Nightstalker1993 FFIX PS1 Settings?

Hi guys, had setup my rg556 following joey's guide and used retroarch with swanstation for PS1 emulation with Vulkan. With ffix u can only get smooth gameplay at 2x resolution, at 3x the game stutters during the battle scenes. I thought the rg556 should have more than enough power to run ps1 games at 3x or 4x resolution. Anything I'm missing or is ffix more power intensive?

2024.05.20 05:34 JStrictGG Looking for my first

Hi everyone! I’m looking for my first “retro handheld emulator” for lack of a better term. I want to play games like Pokémon (most generations possible), N64, NES/SNES, GameCube and if possible PS1/2. I’d like to be able to hook it to the TV when playing “console” style games, with use of a Bluetooth controller. Some extras but not deal breakers would be: Matte black would be my preferred color, longest battery life I can find, and a vibrant screen.
I want this to be part of my “everyday carry” kit. Right now it’s an all black setup that I carry with me everywhere.
(Not 100% sure on etiquette of this subreddit so forgive me if this post isn’t what this Reddit is all about)

2024.05.20 03:52 brad35mm No country for old men

Ok, so I have been putting in work, researching and trying to learn where specs are at these days. I'm lost!
I haven't built or bought my own computer in 20 years..!
I've got a killer retro gaming collection, which is taking up space, and is going to be boxed up for a while, or until I get a house with a spare room.
I recently got into emulation, which is amazing, I've got a Miyoo Mini Plus, and an Anbernic handheld.
So now, I think I want a mini PC, it will be connected to the TV, and used for media and light gaming.
My needs -
Any recommendations? And thanks in advance.

2024.05.20 00:27 Freedom_Neither Retroarch for all my emulation games

Gaming on iOS keeps getting better and better. I've only been into emulation for about a month. First, I discovered Delta on the App Store and downloaded it right away because I read it could run Nintendo games. Then I found Gamma, which I downloaded to play PS1 games. However, I ran into a problem—either it doesn’t support cheats or I just couldn't figure it out. Next, PPSSPP came out, and I downloaded it for PSP games. I wasn’t sure if Delta and Gamma could handle PSP games, so I was excited to try PPSSPP. I enjoyed using these three emulators, but then RetroArch came along. RetroArch can play a ton of games, and everything I tried from Delta, Gamma, and PPSSPP worked perfectly on it. Plus, it supports cheats and is easy to use.
So, I ended up deleting the first three and now I’m just using RetroArch. It's been great so far!

2024.05.19 22:14 Educational_Tap4533 PS1 Duckstation Controller Issues Steamdeck LCD

PS1 Duckstation Controller Issues Steamdeck LCD
I’m about done with this thing at this point. Between my PS2 memory cards just randomly deleting save games, or corrupting entirely and my PS1 memory card doing the same, now I can’t for the life of me get the controllers working on Duckstation.
I’ve reset the emulator on Emudeck, reinstalled it, I’ve reset the controller configs, and I either have no input whatsoever on the steam deck, or if I force Analog Mode I get inputs but they’re super delayed. I’ve followed a few YT tutorials and still not working. The most irritating thing is it was all working fine, I nearly finished crash bandicoot 1, and then left the steam deck in its case for a month, didn’t update anything that I can remember and charged it up and boom nothing works 😞 can someone please explain like I’m 5? I’m normally super technically competent- I design software for a living ffs but I swear at this point this thing is just trying to push me to my limits. I’m tempted to just get my PS1 out and buy an upscaler.
Alternatively I’m just going to use my rooted PSVita for PS1 emulation as that’s a cake walk in comparison. I would prefer the steam deck as it’s got the bigger screen though.
Please help this confused and mildly infuriated man!

2024.05.19 14:28 berickphilip Does Bluetooth Audio perform better on RG353M VS on RG35XX-H? What about battery life?

I know that the RG353M has a bit better performance for the emulators gameplay.
However I do not intend toplay the heavier systems like PSP or Saturn.
My questions are,

2024.05.19 07:33 MindMeltedMa1d3n BEST/MOST USEFUL HOMEBREW APPS 2024

I want to make a list here of useful things, I think alot of people stumble around. I modded my 3ds in 2019 and have downloaded alot of different things over the years and these are the things that have stuck out. I am not really adding things everyone talks about. Some things people will recognize but I'm sure there's a few here you haven't heard of.
MUSIC:
BlargSPC: 3dsx application that plays dumped SPC files from SNES cartridges (and loops the music as if you're in game)
3DS VGMSTREAM: Plays .DSP files and many other file types from gamecube and other gaming platforms from SD by putting the files directly in a folder called Music in the root of the SD.
BCSTM PLAYER: Plays BCSTM files straight from your 3DS.
Lime Player: useful for playing most standard file types mp3 ect.
Ctrmus: comes with Luma, Basic mp3 player.
STEPPER: A Gameboy advance step sequencer booted from virtual console
Orchestrina: a Zelda ocarina emulator that let's you play a ocarina or windwaker songs.
UTILITY
Universal Manager: A really simple file browser for managing SD card contents
3ds Battery Mark: explains your batteries health
3DSident: whole system overview, shows specs and health of system
Net Pass: Brings back street pass in a new way, and revives Mii Plaza.
GYBT: custom badges on home screen super useful for customizing
Emulation: (NEW 3DS ONLY, OTHER METHODS EXIST ON OLDER MODELS VIA INJECTION)
Retroarch: A all in one emulator that runs well on New 3ds. You can forward PS1 games into CIA files with a PS1 forwarder.
SNES9X: 3DS fork of the popular emulator for snes. (Works on OLDER 3DS)
MGBA: great emulator for New 3DS. (Does not work well on OLD 3DS models I'd suggest using NSUI to inject the roms for performance reasons)
DaedalusX64: a nintendo 64 emulator that imo is just a proof of concept it barley runs any games well on NEW 3DS. some games run fine, most are unplayable. Compatability list online.
Twilight menu: uses the native DS guts inside the 3ds and boots into a DSI. Used to play Roms straight from DS card in a designated folder you choose.
Free SHOPS
H SHOP: alternative to freeshop/ eshop
Ghost Eshop: alternative shop with same view of universal updater
Universal updater: great place to update applications you already have
I know of some more stuff but this is what I wanted to list here.
I can edit later with links! But a simple Google search will bring up the githubs for gbatemp threads of all of these ✨️
Sometimes modding scene can be kinda harsh and mean. If anyone has any questions about any of these I'm willing to answer to the best of my ability.
Happy homebrew!
Edit: there's literally nothing wrong with this list lmao
Yall need to just be normal, I also said MOST USEFUL.
DaedalusX is useful in the sense that some games work. The list had alot more useful stuff.
WHY ARE YOU DOWNVOTING WHEN DAEDALUSX64 IS LITERALLY THE ONLY WORKING N64 EMULATOR SO FAR, IN THE DAY OF OUR LORD 2024 😭
Me telling people "oh yeah it runs perfect" would be a lie so I just was honest about how it preforms. It isn't my fault lmao. Setting expectations appropriately.

2024.05.18 20:36 Drascos Odin 2 mini VS Retroid Pocket 4 pro

Hello, sorry, I know the "Odin 2 vs RP4P" question comes up a lot but... I have the impression that the forthcoming release of the Odin 2 mini is changing the situation. Before, we could just say "the Odin is better in every way but get the RP4P if you want a smaller console". But now that the Mini is coming, I'm hesitating between the two models, and I'd like to hear what you think about it.
(It's worth mentioning that I'm assuming that the Odin 2 Mini will work just as well as the Odin 2 and that it competes with the RP4P in terms of portability!)
At home, I've got a hacked 3DS, a hacked PS Vita and a hacked Wii. This means I can run all Nintendo's portable retro gaming on my 3DS, PS1, PSP and PS Vita games on my Vita, and Game Cube or Wii games on my Wii. I've always dreamed of a small portable console that would let me emulate all that at once, and that's why I'm thinking of buying the Odin 2 mini or the RP4P.
I'd like my console to be able to run most 3DS/PS Vita games, PS1/PS2 games (Shadow of the Colossus, Digimon...), Wii games (by the way, I don't know if you can emulate certain games with motion control, like Spectrobes...) and as many Switch games as possible (I like indie games).
I guess Odin 2 mini is better in every way. But, I love the transparent design of RP4P, it's cheaper, smaller so more convenient and I'm wondering it might be just right for my needs. Even if I'm wondering is the little size difference impacts convenience. So, what do you think?

2024.05.18 20:27 AdDisastrous7805 Stock OS stability for Anbernic devices?

I ordered a blue RG35XXSP.
This will be my first Anbernic console. I wanted to ask how stable the stock OS usually are on these devices?
I know people usually install custom firmware on them but I’m thinking I may wait until they get updates to support the closing of the lid to shut down the device and any other QOL features.
Would I have a poor emulation experience on stock firmware or should it still be stable?
I’m mostly looking to emulate GBA and maybe some PS1 and PSP RPG’s.
Thanks for any tips can’t wait to try this device out, my GBA SP used to go everywhere with me!

2024.05.18 17:02 Throw39Away63 Any updated, simple ways to add more PS1 games only without a USB attachment?

Hi all,
If there's any threads that answer my exact question, please feel free to direct me to them and delete this thread.
I have found some threads/comments that answer my question, but they seem very complicated and I'm not super comfortable with complex tech.
So I'm looking for a way to remove some existing games on the console, and add my own PS1 games, without having to have a USB attached at all times.
I would also prefer to keep the system as simple as possible (ideally the stock menu), with no other emulators and menus. This can be ignored if these are the only possible ways to achieve what I'm after.
I'll be playing the games with both my older and younger brothers, and will be letting them borrow the system from time to time, so I essentially just want it to be a plug and play kind of situation.
Thanks!
Edit: I should add, it will be important to me to have both controller slots available to play with my brothers.

2024.05.17 17:35 xapatti Game recommendations for a washed up gamer

So, i’ve been gaming since the ps1 era and have played virtualy every existant genre, but because of a harsh routine i have stopped playing for something like 4 years now. I really don’t have any more time today than i had in this 4 year spam, but then i got the pleasure of playing Elden Ring last year for i am a big fan of the souls series, and it was probably the best game i’ve played in my life (literally changed my decision to stop playing videogames). That being said, i want recommendations of what could i possibly play next that fulfills the void that completing this game caused me. (And i am looking forward to seeing what the recent gaming scenario has to offer in its best)
Big text so everything below this paragraph is optional:
Ps: I actually played RE4 remake recently because i’m a big fan of the original, and it was a BANGER.
Ps. 2: I started playing TOTK via emulator since im on PC, and it’s a great game and all but the combat is really underwhelming and the world os not as cool as elden ring’s. (I get the hype but i just think ER spoiled me with open worlds)
Ps. 3: I considered something in the line of GoW 2018 (but i don’t know since i heard people saying it’s basically a preparation for Ragnarok, wich is not on PC). I really wanted to play TLOU 2 but it isn’t on PC either (TLOU is just behing ER in my list). And i considered Ghost of Tsushima too. What do you think of these for a start?
Obs.: For a better understanding of what i tend to like, my favourite games ever where something like ER, TLOU, The entire FromSoft catalog, RE4 (ps2), Borderlands 2, Witcher 3, Tekken 3 and the Crash series (but i guess it’s just nostalgia), Phantom Pain, San Andreas, Rainbow six and CS-GO (for competitive but i don’t have the time for this no more), and of course minecraft but it doesn’t even count because the feeling of that era will never come back. Bit of an ecletic list but i wasn’t lying when i said i played every genre ever.
Sorry for any mispellings, i’m brazillian and my autocorrect is set in portuguese 😅.
