Installing lanterns on vinyl siding

CD/DVD drive rack

CD/DVD drive rack
drives were getting a little warm with frequent use. asked my neighbor if he could help me print something up... this is the result.
a little double sided foam tape keeps them in place nicely.
pro tip - if you make something like this, lay the rack parts on their side, install drives "vertically" then install other side of rack.... THEN turn the drives horizontal. much easier way to install than, say, how i tried initially.

2024.05.22 01:47 rjwrx92 Coax wiring question

Coax wiring question
I am having an internet company come and install service next week and noticed that I don’t have any coax jacks in my living room. I have two covers in the corner of my room and when opened I see two coaxial cables in each. Cables seem tight but I didn’t really want to pull on them as i wasn’t sure where they go. Pictures of one attached for reference. Would the installer be able to put a jack into one of these by splicing the cable? There is a large bunch of coax cables and blue cables hanging off the side of my house. Home was built in 2018. Thank you!

2024.05.22 01:34 Alexthefilmguy Moza ES wheel showing "Disconnected" in pit house.

Hi -
I recently purchased the Moza R5 bundle and set it all up, my current issue though is that the wheel is showing up as disconnected in the Pit House software, this is strange to me because the R5 Base and SR-P Lite Pedals are showing up as connected and I can visually see the inputs, as well as calibrate them.
I did some research and tried many things so far, I have plugged the USB directly in to a USB 3.0 slot and now currently is in a Powered USB 3.0 hub (one of the suggestions) and it is still not working... I also turned off power saving modes on all my USB's cause I saw that was maybe an issue, as well as plugging the DC power brick it's self in to different surge protectors and wall outlets cause some posts said power distribution might cause it. But after following all the trouble shooting offered by these threads my wheel would still not connect, I also uninstalled and reinstalled pit house as well resets, firmware updates, really anything I could, but to no avail.
If it helps the wheel does not light up at all, which my friend believes means it must have something to do with the connection between the wheel and the base, rather than a computepower problem. Another side note to add to that is I also purchased the Formula mod for the wheel, but followed a detailed tutorial to install it and made sure the spring was still in the same place under the faceplate.
Any help or more ideas would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!

Comes with plastic tube/box, lefty clip, and original bearings. SV: 225 SOLD
Grimsmo Norseman #6654 - Third owner. Was originally anodized turquoise, but a previous owner had custom anodizing done by Valley Bladeworks. Was only ever disassembled to anodize. Govee Recessed Light Installation Question
Hello,
I have recessed light fixtures in the basement that came with what I would call "easy install" connectors. I'm including a picture. I was able to screw them directly into the bulb connector and plug in on the other side. Worked perfectly. Can I use something like this for a Govee install? Anyone know where to get them, since Govee doesn't include them? Thank you very much for the help.

2024.05.22 01:19 Additional-Fan-2409 Lazy but Latency-Free: How WiFi 7 Saved My Gaming Setup!

My lazy self has been procrastinating running Ethernet cables throughout my home for years, but it seems that installing a WiFi 7-capable access point has solved all my problems. I placed the access point in the central area of my home, upgraded my PC's wireless nic to WiFi 7 and now I have a steady latency when playing competitive online video games that only fluctuate about 2-3ms, even in the farthest corners of my home.
The performance rivals that of a direct connection to my router. I thought I'd share my experience to help anyone else who's too lazy to do cable runs.
Edit: To correct myself, I ran two cables from my router, which is located on the far side of the first floor, to the access point located in the center of the second floor. My PC is approximately 50ft away, through 2 walls, from the AP.

2024.05.22 01:16 schwendigo Crimping JST-XH connectors

Crimping JST-XH connectors
Hi nerds!
Running into an issue crimping some JST-XH connectors - they're coming out kind of mangled.
Using this this tool and these connectors i can't seem to be getting a good result (checked out a few youtube tutorials as well).
I guess the questions are:
  • Am I using the right tool?
  • The extra large tab at the base of the connectors (that attach them and are meant to be cut apart), do they serve a purpose for the crimping process, or should they be trimmed before the pin goes into the crimper? If I leave it in, it creates a big flange bent in the opposite direction (like little wings)
  • I've been pushing the pin only in up until the hook on the bottom (for installing into a plastic housing) is flush - otherwise when crimping the whole things gets squished and you don't have an operational female socket - is there a better way to do this lining up any landmarks in the tool?
  • Is there a particular crimping die slot in the tool to use? one side is labeled AWG with wire gauges, the the other side is ".25, .5, etc" The internal geoemetry of the die / anvil is split down the middle so it's clear one side is for different connectors or just wires.
Any advice would be appreciated!

2024.05.22 01:06 aaron-mcd Looking for exterior storage options Promaster

Interior is full, including 2 bikes. Got an inflatable kayak and need to find somewhere to put it or the bikes. The roof is full of solar and traction boards.
One option is a swing away bike rack. The only product that works and allows both doors to open is Rockymounts Backstage. The only problem with this is putting $3,000 of stuff outside 24/7 making a target for someone to scare the crap out of us trying to steal bikes at night. But on the plus side, I'd probably ride more often since the bikes would be easy to access.
Another option is a rear door mounted cargo box. The main problem with this is difficulty of install and stupidly expensive price for a metal plate plus rectangular metal box. The benefits are ease of door access and relatively secure. Plus putting a $500 kayak on the back is better than bikes.
A third option would be a swingaway cargo box, but I cant find any that allow both doors to fully open when the box is swung away. Stowaway 2 has a nice big box but the passenger door doesn't fully open. I am considering this, but makign new mount holes in the box to shift it towards the driver side, which may allow it to swing open enough to get the passenger door to 90.
Any bettecheapeeasier option?

2024.05.22 00:55 jwwoodma Pergola / Gazebo on condo deck

Hello everyone! We’re considering installing a pergola or gazebo on our patio deck of our condo (top floor condo in Northern California). Our condo restrictions do not allow us to drill into the decking or the side of the building, and so we’re hoping to brainstorm an idea for safely and securely installing a gazebo or pergola.
The idea that seems most promising would be to set the four posts of the structure in plant pots/boxes and concrete them into those boxes (added benefit that, if drainage is solved for, plants could also be added to those boxes).
Are there any suggestions for other options or whether this solution is advisable? Again, it’s nonnegotiable to secure it to the decking. In the four years we’ve lived there, our umbrella (weighted with sand) has blown over, but has never been uplifted.

2024.05.22 00:54 GingaPLZ How does this boiler failure mode even happen in a Dual Boiler?

How does this boiler failure mode even happen in a Dual Boiler?
I found this secondhand Dual Boiler that "leaked out the bottom" that I thought was a score and an easy fix with some new o-rings, but it turns out that it seems to be leaking out of the boiler itself. It starts almost immediately after the pump turns on, and you can clearly see a seal that's blown out the side of the boiler, where the water is coming from.
Has anyone seen this before? I've had a surprisingly difficult time Googling the problem due to how prevalent the o-ring issue is... all the combinations of "Dual Boiler gasket boiler failure replacement" etc, keep coming up with the straightforward o-ring fix, but I haven't found this exact problem anywhere.
I can't figure out what holds the two halves of the boilers together, but I havent pulled it out yet. I'm wondering if it's just like a crimp that would make it almost impossible to replace the gasket.
I had a Barista Express for a few years, and then refurbished/restored/upgraded a 19 year old Rancilio Silvia (analog single boiler) that I've been enjoying for a while, and have plans to install a PID, etc., so I'm fairly technically inclined.
I didn't own this machine when it failed, and can't even figure out what would cause this. The rest of the machine is very clean and seems to be in good shape, so it doesn't look like it was abused.
Any help with ideas on how to fix this are appreciated!

2024.05.22 00:47 Silly_Salamander5424 Is there anything that can be done for this plant???

Is there anything that can be done for this plant???
Before you all (rightfully) scold me, I've not been in charge of this plant until last week.
My dad bought it from a garage sale 3 years ago and has kept it by his tv ever since, which has caused it to shrivel on the side facing the tv. Last year he put it outside in direct sun for a few days and it got badly sunburned. He also alternated between over watering and under watering. I re potted it once in 2022 I believe because it was originally in a very small pot.
I personally don't know anything about plants but the leaves are very elongated and pale, and some of them are dead. Should I remove the dead leaves??? Add more soil???
I live in a basement apartment so there aren't many windows for me to put it near. There is one above my bed so I put it on the shelf nearest to the window (which is still like 5 feet away)
I can't install a shelf (landlord says no holes in the walls) and I can't put it outside, both because it could get kicked by my neighbors and because it'll get sunburnt again. I know I need to gradually expose it to sun but I am not sure how to go about that with no proper windows.
I don't know what type of plant it is either. Originally had wide, thick, flat leaves with white speckles, Some form of aloe I think??? Again I am a fool when it comes to plants, but I am eager to learn so that I can help this one in whatever ways I can.

2024.05.22 00:39 HeWhoShantNotBeNamed EJ25D ticking at 1,500 RPM

EJ25D ticking at 1,500 RPM
It is almost certainly not the timing tensioner. I took off the timing belt cover and the tensioner is rock solid. It's also fairly new.
The noise sounds like it's coming from behind there on the driver's side, from inside the engine and you can hear it through the exhaust.
This engine has 225,000 miles on it. I did overheat it once when I installed the thermostat upside down, but that was nearly four years ago. It has also run low on oil (dry dipstick) a few times as it has an oil leak.
What is this noise? Is it actually a concern?

2024.05.22 00:33 Krye5 How hot is too hot for an attic?

Getting my roof replaced post hail storm. Researching about roofs and attic ventilation; I think this 1972 house is under ventilated but would like a reddit opinion.
Approx 3000 sq ft L-shaped ranch house (so lots of roof). It has six "750" vent boxes along the back side of the roof and "soffit vents about every 6 feet" (unknown size, not documented better than that)
I have 2 roof bids, one will replace roof with new 6-count 750 boxes. Other qoute will remove 750 boxes and install ridge vent along entire roof line.
However, everything I read says not to outsize the exhaust over the intake into the attic. To see how bad it is now, I did some measurements this afternoon to see how hot it really is. My attic has about 5" of cellulose and about another 7-9" of blown in fiber glass on top.
Here's what I recoded with my handy dandy laser thermometer (I knew I'd use it more than once!).
3:30 PM
Ambient temp outside 87F Feels like 91F
Wind south 9MPH gusts 23 MPH
Temp when I first opened attic 141F
For reference, North facing house brick in the sun 98F
North roof shingle in the sun 132 F
North attic decking inside attic 140F
For reference, south facing house brick in the sun 113F
South roof shingle in the sun 148F
South attic decking inside attic 146.5F
West roof shingle in the sun 116F (trees on this side of the house)
So what I don't understand is whether that attic temp is expected seeing how hot the shingles are. Things I read say it should be 20F hotter at most over ambient temps in the attic but I'm unclear how that's possible.

2024.05.22 00:27 SafeApart Outdoor Faucet Replacement

Outdoor Faucet Replacement
I have an outdoor faucet that I have replaced the middle portion of pipes once already (needed a quick fix so I could use it for the summer), but now the bottom portion near the 90 deg, is spraying water everywhere when the water was turned back on for it (Water was shut off, hose was disconnected, and faucet was left open during the winter). It is kind of a weird set up, as I live in Wisconsin, so the temperature reaches well below freezing, and the shut-off valve for this faucet is near the center of the house with the pipe going from the faucet, down the siding, then through the crawl space under an addition that was put on this house, and finally into the basement where the shutoff is. I've installed a frost proof sillcock at the last house I lived at, but I'm worried that since the pipes exit the house very low to the ground (maybe 4 inches max above the ground), that I will be unable to install one in this situation. Any advice or ideas are appreciated.

2024.05.22 00:26 Applesniper SPC or WPC or LVT Flooring

We had a bust bathroom valve a few days ago (probably 30-50 gallons of water leaked), that destroyed our 20-ish-year-old laminate flooring in serval rooms.
so we plan to replace the entire house flooring. but I am not certain what type of flooring I should pick because I want to use the same flooring for the bathroom and kitchen as well.
after reading for a few days, I am still confused on which type of vinyl flooring I should pick. SPC, WPC, or LVT? how thick the floor i should buy
My house is single floor and the concrete subfloor is uneven (should I use self-leveling stuff even it first?) do I need underlayment? I am looking to install it in the bathroom and kitchen as well, so i am looking for something won't get destroyed by a small water flood.
any brand recommendations?
any advice is helpful
Thank you all

2024.05.22 00:24 Throwaway_blarghhh Neighbors wedged kitchen extractor vent closed - how illegal is this?

So my house is connected to my neighbor's and overlaps, in kind of a T shape. A few feet of one of the walls is in my neighbor's garden and I don't have access to it as the fence begins at the exterior corner of the house. (apologies if this is unclear, I can elaborate more if relevant) The room on my side is the kitchen.
About a year ago I had an extractor fan installed in the kitchen, and unfortunately the only viable wall for the vent was the one in my neighbor's garden that I don't have direct access to. They weren't thrilled, and neither would I be if it was my garden, but the installation guy seemed confident that it was the only viable exit due to lintels and something about beams running the wrong way to feed it out through the ceiling. We've tried to be respectful as we can in this situation and installed a carbon filter that we replaced every 6 months. But we live in a fairly dense little neighborhood where people barbeque regularly in the summer, the smell of others cooking is somewhat unavoidable and in my place I certainly wouldn't begrudge someone not wanting their house to smell like a kitchen every time they cook.
Recently I've been noticing that the extractor fan has seemed totally ineffective. I thought maybe the carbon filters needed replacing, but doing so changed nothing. Then today I finally got up and had a look in the tube to the exterior that the fan leads to, and to my surprise the little flap that covers the exit was firmly shut and wouldn't open even when poked. So I go outside to the fence and poke my head round the wall and I can see that these fuckers have wedged the goddamn vent completely shut by cramming some bundle of something up between the flap and it's cover. I am 100% sure it was intentional, no way for it to get there accidentally.
I'm pretty certain that this is illegal, but how much so are we talking? I mean, it's private property but also surely that's a fire hazard? I'm wondering what action is appropriate to take beyond asking them to remove it. Thanks in advance for any advice!
Edit: in England btw, if that matters

2024.05.22 00:24 wutguts Am I getting real internet??

Am I getting real internet??
So I live in a rural area(obviously, since I'm in this sub 😆) where we don't have any internet other than Starlink. I'm curious if anybody cares to guess if this might be a sign of internet options coming in. We've had horizontal drilling machines putting down flexible conduit or whatever and then they came in running some type of wires through that. The boxes were installed basically in front of every property, on one side of the road. So they are spaced out by anywhere from 100 yards to a couple hundred. I'm hoping we might be getting fiber so I can get off Starlink, but I can't find any info.

2024.05.22 00:24 AE-Vierge Ceramic coating on headers and exhaust tips

I sent my ISR long-tube headers and Z1 double walled exhaust tips to Jet-hot Performance to get ceramic coated inside and out. Figured I’d post side by side pics for comparison.
The original pics are on the left and after ceramic coating on the right. The headers were coated for function, while the exhaust tips were coated to make cleaning easier. I think the headers look beautiful compared to what they were originally. The color is uniform now and you don’t see the discoloration around the welds anymore. The exhaust tips aren’t the polished chrome look anymore and have more of a nickel finish which is blah, but at least they will just wipe clean and won’t show signs of pitting.
Can’t wait to install everything and see how it performs!
