2024.05.21 17:30 GlitteringRanger2259 Feeling like a helicopter parent and looking for some advice.

I want to preface this by noting that this is a ramble. I have a lot of thoughts, this is probably too many unnecessary details but at this point that’s one of the things Im struggling with as a (SAH) parent of a little with T1D.
So my daughter was diagnosed June of last year when she was still 3. It’s been a crazy journey, and while I’m grateful we haven’t had to deal with any life threatening incidences since her first DKA and diagnosis I can’t help but worry about her sugar all day, every day.
She’s on MDI, we’re doing a pump class next month (a requirement before her endo will approve), just recently changed her long acting and was seeing improvement in her glucose—but now it feels like we’re back to the beginning somehow?
She’s had so many days where she’s above 200. When I looked at her libre 3 ‘time in ranges,’ she was for the longest only ‘in range’ 38% of the time, any other time was way above. However, a few weeks ago (around the beginning of the month) I played around with her breakfast ratio and it seemed as if I found the ratio that REALLY worked for her—and then two days later she had her endo appointment and they changed her long acting because her sugar was going over 350 3-4 hours after eating lunch. For the first two weeks of this month she went from being in range 38% of the time to 67% of the time! It was so… great? But for the last week, she’s been pushing back into the 300s.
Now, one of the things that makes me feel like a helicopter parent: since she’s only 4 (5 in July ), I prefer to check her sugar myself and do all of her injections myself—one of the reasons being that I’ve noticed during this year that when my husband does her injections her glucose levels are even worse (there was one incident —early weeks of diagnosis— where he didn’t even inject her, the medicine literally sat on her skin and she was about to eat). Recently my little one tried to (very quickly) help me set up her needle and she bent the needle that goes into the pen (unbeknownst to me), and I tried to prime it like 3 times and I thought the pen broke. When i went to disassemble it to toss it was when I noticed the bent needle. Tried again with new one, went to prime and sooo much insulin came out, like there was so much pressure. It was an extremely stressful morning, and I no longer wanted her to help me get her medicine ready.
She knows how to check her sugar, but when it comes to cleaning her finger really well, she does not do a good job and I go behind her and recheck when the number from her test comes back 40+ different from her CGM.
Since she has a libre 3, her cgm is connected to my phone. We have a reader, have not yet used it because my phone stays in her room over night to be within range of her while I have it also connected to my iPad. When she goes low, she doesn’t wake up with the device blaring right next to her—but the notifications coming to my iPad inform me to check her.
I’m at a point where I’m…lost. She doesn’t seem to fully grasp certain parts of this journey? Should I make her check herself throughout the day until she gets the hang of that first? When should I let her give herself medicine (this part scares the ever loving life out of me because I’m terrified she’ll over do it and not want to drink/eat something to fix it because she’s full or something)?
And since she’s turning 5, she ought to be going to school in autumn—but I’m so unbelievably terrified because we live in a small town and it feels like so many people are ignorant to type 1 and assume it’s type 2. I plan to homeschool, but with her attention span I know it’s going to be difficult. But teachers mindlessly hand out candy, and while not everyone has diabetes, I know it’s going to be another crap experience for her because she was dealt a shitty hand. I even struggle with the judgment when we’re at the store trying to check out and she throws a fit for one of those gourmet lollipops that don’t have the carbs listed on it and there’s no guarantee she’s even going to finish it. When I say no, people just look at me like “what a bad mom, let that baby have a lollipop.”
I don’t restrict her diet. If she wants a piece of chocolate or cookie, or whatever: she can have it— if it’s more than 5carbs, I make her understand she has to have medicine for it. She’s a kid. She loves carbs, all the bread, noodles, desserts—I’m trying to do everything right for her.
She’s a kid, she should have all those experiences and privileges allotted to kids—but how am I to navigated this without dictating every single moment of her life?
If you got this far, I’m sorry for the rambling and thank you.

Discover the Various Cataract Surgeries: Options and Innovations
https://preview.redd.it/zgjcp9bbss1d1.jpg?width=3648&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=85dc4eb0e1c686d4c695f493b5bcdd7f2ae54fd0
Cataracts are one of the most common causes of vision loss. It is due to the loss of transparency of the crystalline lens, the natural eye lens. The crystalline lens loses its transparency both naturally and as a result of aging, reducing visual acuity. Although most cases are age-related, there are other types, such as congenital cataracts (present from birth) or secondary to certain diseases (uveitis, diabetes), drugs or ocular trauma.
Fortunately, medical advances have made cataract treatment safer and more effective than ever. Among treatment options, different cataract surgeries stand out for their techniques and technologies.
Traditional phacoemulsification
Phacoemulsification is the most common cataract surgical method. It involves using an ultrasound probe to fragment and aspirate the cataract. Once the opacified lens has been removed, an intraocular implant is inserted to restore vision. This technique is widely used because of its speed, efficiency and relatively short recovery time.
Laser phacoemulsification
It is possible to perform phacoemulsification using a laser at certain stages of the procedure. This approach offers greater precision, reducing the risk of complications. The laser can be used to create precise incisions in the cornea, fragment the cataract with great precision and soften the posterior lens capsule to facilitate insertion of the intraocular lens.
Femtosecond laser-assisted surgery
This cutting-edge technique uses a femtosecond laser to perform all stages of cataract surgery. The laser creates precise incisions in the cornea, divides the cataract into pieces and prepares the posterior lens capsule. Next, a surgeon inserts an intraocular lens to meet the patient's specific visual needs. Femtosecond laser-assisted surgery offers an unrivalled level of precision.
Toric Lens Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery with a toric intraocular lens can be an effective solution for patients with cataracts and high astigmatism. This technique involves the insertion of a toric implant that corrects both cataracts and astigmatism. The ophthalmologist can help the patient achieve clear vision at all distances by correctly aligning the implant.
Different cataract surgeries offer patients customized options to improve their vision and quality of life. Technological advances continue to open up new possibilities for effective cataract treatment. Consult your trusted optometrist to discuss your options for cataract surgery

2024.05.21 17:23 -hEroKiLler- Diabetic? Or hypoglycemia?

For context I recently reached a point where I could no longer ignore symptoms I was experiencing. I’ve lost a considerable amount of weight in a short amount of time, my vision is blurry almost constantly, I’ve had moments where I get so shaky and dizzy I absolutely need to sit down once my vision goes dark or I will pass out, and yes I have been practically eating the pantry dry in moments like these. Going through a ridiculous amount of water and it never seems enough.
Both type 1 and type 2 are everywhere on both sides of my family, so I was concerned it was catching up to me. I’ve been using test strips to check in moments where I feel horrible and only ever caught low numbers <70, the scariest has been in the 40’s. I’ve only once gone high and I only caught it because I tested on a whim with no symptoms at all. It was 147 and I think it’s high cause it was 7 hours after my last meal when I got up from sleep to use the bathroom.
I know this is just reddit, yes I have an appointment made with a doctor, but it’s three months away so here I am in the meantime. I’m not a doctor and am hesitant to reach out to family incase it’s not it. I don’t understand the numbers I’m looking at I figured if it were diabetes I’d have caught higher numbers by now so I’m wondering if it’s hypoglycemia only. Anyone else experience this? What was the answer you were given?

2024.05.21 17:08 Sad_Car8766 Confused...

Something strange happened today. After being on a low-carb diet for quite a few days, I had a cheat meal for lunch, which was high in carbs and included a sugary drink. Normally, my blood sugar stays between 105 and 130 two hours after eating a low-carb meal, and my fasting blood sugar is always between 130 and 150.
However, today, two hours after eating the high-carb meal, my blood sugar was at 200, but when I checked it again four hours later, it was 83. I was suspicious and tested again, and it was 81. This is the lowest reading I've ever had.
I am a type 2 diabetic. What could be the reason for this? Please guide me.

2024.05.21 16:27 b2uebird Advice on qualifying

My mom (52F) was diagnosed with CKD in 2021. At her last appointment her GFR was 12. It was a reality hit for me (31F). Since that appointment (about 3 weeks ago) I’ve tried to alter my life style. We have the same blood type and she’s agreed to let me go through the testing to see if I’m a match.
But I haven’t lived a healthy lifestyle. I’m overweight, have been pretty sedentary and never took too much care of my diet. I’ve also had appointments in the past where I had mid-high blood pressure (not bad enough to be diagnosed or need medication, just some readings) or it’s been mentioned by doctors/nurses about the risk of being pre-diabetic.
I have no idea if there’s any chance that I’ll still be able to qualify even if I change my lifestyle around. Was looking to see if anyone here had a similar experience?
Since then I’ve cut out most sugar (from 3-5 cans of Pepsi a day to 0), started watching my caloric intake as well as my nutrients and macros to minimize my sugar and watch my protein, carbs, etc. I’ve switch to a more raw/real foods diet, cutting out a lot of the more processed items. I’ve also started walking, I take my dog for a 2km moderate paced walk 5-6 days a week. I have already lost a bit of weight but was looking to see if there’s anything else I can do.
Thanks for any help/advice/info someone might be able to provide.
TLDR: want to qualify to donate, haven’t lived a very healthy lifestyle looking to turn it around. Is it possible/have you done it?

2024.05.21 16:11 BodybuilderPublic757 Natural Cycles - Honest review, insurance reimbursement, coupon code

Coupon Code: 20% off annual subscription, free digital thermometer, $40 off Oura ring
Review: I started using NC in December 2023. I noticed weight loss and decreased appetite when transitioning off the hormonal pill. I used hormonal birth control for around 10 years before switching to NC. I primarily use NC for birth control and find that I'm more in touch with my body as a result of tracking mood, skin changes, cervical mucus, sex drive, and physical symptoms like cramping.
It's convenient that the digital thermometer allows me to store my temperature from the morning and transfer it to the app via bluetooth because I don't sleep with my phone in my bedroom. I try to take my temperature around the same time every morning (6:15AM). NC encourages you to take your temp within a 2 hr. range from your typical temp. check. Personally I don't use the Oura ring or Apple watch because I don't like to sleep with jewelry, but it sounds convenient.
I also like that when we start trying to conceive, I have a pretty precise sense of when I'm fertile. I use the LH test strips (cheapest to buy on Amazon) for increased accuracy. NC's algorithm tells you exactly when to use these test strips based on your temperature tracking.
Insurance: I struggled to find a way to submit my NC claim to insurance. My OBGYN provided me a physical prescription. I ended up submitting a medical claim through the mail including the physical prescription, medical claim form provided on Cigna's website, following information I typed up and printed, and the invoice provided by NC. Cigna processed the claim as "Supplies" and as being Out-of-Network which means, according to my plan, I receive 50% back. I'm a little annoyed the plan didn't process as In-Network considering the provider who wrote the prescription is In-Network, but I'm glad to at least get partially reimbursed. Hope this helps others!

Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Why is X artist higher than Y artist on the 200 chart, even though X artist sold less?
A: This is because of a discrepancy between Billboard's ranking and the ranking from the website that the sales data is scraped from
Q: Where do you get the sales data from?
A: https://hitsdailydouble.com/sales_plus_streaming
Q: What does "err" mean on the 200 chart?
A: If you are seeing "err", that means that the bot I use to gather chart data couldn't identify sales data for a particular album because of a difference in album naming between Billboard and HitsDailyDouble

2024.05.21 15:55 Nukemarine Today I finished lesson 8 of Pimsleur Mandarin Chinese, supplemented with Trimsleur, Anki, ACHTT, and previous Japanese study. So far, so good with Hanzi characters being the easiest part of all this.

Was tempted to make a video to show more than tell and still might, but things are still very, very early and always subject to change.
My previous Japanese language study is obviously giving me a big head start. Knew this would be the case when I went to Taiwan a couple of times and could recognize more than a few words which really helped me get around. Obviously pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar would be radically different, but I was also aware of that. The unknown traditional Hanzi (focusing on that since it's easier given my Japanese study background) will not be the main problem, just the tones and pronunciation and thousands of words using those Hanzi.
Also, I have the benefit of going in with a set plan based on my own experience learning (and re-learning) Japanese using self-study tools: Anki, text analyzers, browser plug-ins, audio books, pop-up dictionaries, etc.
Current plan is as follows: Do the first 90 lessons of the older Pimsleur Mandarin course with serious supplementation:
So current plan just for the 90 Pimsleur lessons is:
  1. Review due Anki. For these, I have strict fail and soft fail rules for each card type. "Audio" cards (PinYin word/sentence) I have to know which hanzi are used and the meaning of the word - this is a strict fail. The soft fail (I hit "hard" UNLESS the spacing will be over 6 months) is the stroke order of the hanzi and meaning of the example sentence. The Clozed Delete card I also have know the Mandarin word, it's hanzi, and it's tone for the strict fail. The stroke order and meaning/reading of the clozed deleted Mandarin sentence is a soft fail.
  2. Do the Pimsleur lesson with the transcript (in part I at least). Pause to initially answer the English prompt then play and repeat the Chinese phrase. When the new word is introduced, go to it's Anki card to add pronunciation notes (the transcript has a few pages of charts for this) along with HanziHero as needed for Hanzi meanings and notes (super important for Hanzi that are new to me). Now, Pimsleur is normally a 30 minute lesson, but doing it this way makes it last about an hour or so.
  3. Activate the new vocabulary in Anki (custom study option) and see how much is remembered. I set cards to long learning time (1m 10m 1440m 3600m) with graduation done at 1 week. This is also great because Pimsleur cannot tell if I remembered anything or not and balance accordingly. Anki can.
  4. Watch one episode of Peppa Pig Mandarin at 75% speed with English sub, then rewatch with traditional Chinese subs. Peppa Pig is slowed down because the normal episodes are sped up on purpose in most languages. Any other show I would likely leave at original speed.
  5. Update my comprehensible immersion audio playlist. It'd be 4 copies of today's Trimsleur lesson, 3 copies of yesterday, 2 copies of two days ago, and 1 copy of three days ago (so Lesson 8 x4, Lesson 7 x3, Lesson 6 x2, Lesson 5 x1). In addition, it'd be the last four days of Peppa Pig ripped audio. This is about two hours of audio in total. I then play these on random, and the most recent lessons are played more often.
The comprehensible audio is played a lot of the time passively in the background. I can be doing anything else and not notice, but it'll be there whenever I do take a aural snack (pay attention to what's being played). I DO NOT want to repeat the major mistake in my early Japanese study of playing incomprehensible Japanese audio (rips of TV shows I watched) near 24/7. Found out that comprehensible that frequently refreshed is key to training your brain to follow along without thinking as well as repeat without effort.
Again, I'm only on lesson 8 with a handful of vocabulary words under my belt. Still, I can read aloud all eight of the introductory dialogues in traditional Mandarin. I'm also noticing the words as they pop up in Peppa Pig.
Gonna hate moving on to Pimsleur Mandarin part II as there's no transcript. However, there are websites that'll transcribe the Trimsleur audio (and maybe even the Pimsleur if I wanted) which'll simplify doing the lessons like I'm doing now.
After Pimsleur, I plan to do deep dive study methods (read subtitles along with Chinese subs, pausing only to look up meaning of unknown words and phrases), then after 10 hours of reading (at beginning stages this might be only 1 hour of actual Chinese audio) use subs with MorphMan in Anki to get 100 most common words that are within my learned vocab range. All that means is if I know 1,500 words then MorphMan will only look for new words from 3,000 most common that's also the most common in the read material stopping at 100 new words if that before starting reading up again.
Hopefully this all makes sense. Like with Japanese, I'll freely share whatever resources I can and answer whatever questions people have (if I have time). Obviously I'm in the beginning stages so maybe don't expect much.

2024.05.21 15:51 Dramatic_Strike_4061 Trouble with spicy chips recently as a diabetic

I’m a type 1 diabetic and currently 20 years old I weigh 156 lbs and for the past few months have been having this problem with spicy chips mainly turbos flamas. Whenever I eat them during the day I’m completely fine however the side effects only happen after 4am which would be the following. I would feel slight nausea which would only grow slowly but I would never vomit just gag and spit a few times before having diarrhea but what I find strangest about it is how my blood sugar levels would drop low every time no matter what. I could drink a whole litter of soda or juice and not have a single drop of insulin before hand and still have my levels drop below 50. I’m not sure why this happens or how it could even happen but would appreciate theories. I’ve already decided to completely cut any type of spicy chips out of my life but still want to know why this happens especially the whole ordeal with my blood sugar dropping the way it does whenever the whole series of events happens

2024.05.21 15:15 zytukin Symptoms of low blood sugar when it's high?

I don't get it. I was diagnosed with type 2 in 2015 and been on numerous pills like Janumet and Metformin since. I cut carbs and exercise a lot, and often when I feel shaky, weak, and light headed I'll check my blood sugar and it will be over 200. Eat a candy bar and I immediately feel fine again.
Explained this to both my previous doctor and my current one and they seem complacent about it, like they think "oh well, doesn't matter", or maybe think I'm just lieing.
It leads me to not wanting to take my pills, not wanting to avoid carbs, and not being worried about having diabetes since I feel like I have low blood sugar when my blood sugar is elevated.
What is going on? Anybody else experience something like this? Do I actually have diabetes or something else causing elevated blood sugar?
I was diagnosed with ADHD as a child and even now that I'm over 40 I still have a very high energy level when it comes to physical activity. Is it possible to just have a naturally higher than normal blood sugar level?

2024.05.21 14:54 caffeinated_hardback I’m worried about my Mum’s health. She’s very defensive about it as she’s embarrassed. Advice on how to approach this topic?

This may be structured a bit weird but bear with me. I’m not sure if this is the right forum but if you have any advice please let me know!
So I (22F) live with my parents and my two siblings (20F and 10M). Since December my Mum (52F) has been constantly ill - bad psoriasis, chest and sinus infections, stomach issues. The doctor has cleared her for anything nasty, and my Dad (54F) and I suspect it’s because of her weight and general health. She’s avoided the doctor this long I think because she’s scared that the topic of her weight will come up, and I know it’s something she’s been insecure about since her thirties. She cried last night after the doctor told her she was borderline diabetic and had high blood pressure and needed another appointment to discuss he next steps. I’m worried she’ll avoid the bigger problem or try and paper over it with a fad diet as usual and get “healthy” for a few weeks so her blood tests show normal, then go back to ignoring it to avoid her health issues.
Obesity and diabetes (type 2 on both sides) run in my family, and my Mum is now bordering both those things according to her recent blood tests. We have a fairly healthy diet and only eat fast food once a month (fish and chips UK classic lol). The main thing that’s lead her to this condition is portion control (my Mum’s the main cook Mon-Thurs and it’s almost double portions on those days, then me and my Dad share the other as we work later hours during the week), mindless eating during the day, and not moving. And I mean that almost literally. She’s a stay-at-home wife, and her only movement is moving around the shops twice a week and walking from the car to my brother’s school. Other than that, she’ll sit on her phone for hours or in the garden and not move until it’s time to cook dinner on her days or do school run. Lately she’s not even been doing that as she’s been so poorly. I want to get her to start moving more once her chest infection has gone.
My Dad has tried to help, but being overweight himself he adopts a mentality of self hatred and constantly complaining to try and guilt himself into losing weight. He’s essentially suggested restriction with food, which I think is the wrist thing he could have suggested. I had a secret eating disorder for years and I think my mum has bingeing tendencies, so cold Turkey is not the way forward.
Any advice from people who had to have these conversations with a relative? Or if you were my Mum in that situation, what did you need to hear? What small changes did you make that helped you maintain your journey and help you understand the importance of being healthier. Without hurting her feelings preferably, though she’s so worked up I’m not sure how to go about it now. Thanks

2024.05.21 14:13 HardWiredNZ Why are they so unreliable for readings?

Been using them libre for a few years, failure rate was probably a good 60% on the old libre 1 model, most didn't last 14 days or just gave totally LOW reading for a few days non stop so a type of total failure, got free replacements though. On the libre2 now and doesn't seem to be failing so much at least, but some sensors just give really incorrect readings for days at a time before a day of semi accurate readings then back to totally incorrect again. Such as right now blood testing shows 17, while the libre had been telling me I'm 7 for the last few hours (had no food to suddenly raise it before the blood test either) They are about to be free for New Zealand diabetics as well with the other big brand dexcom, should I move to dexcom as the libre is just totally unreliable must of the time, it's just a pity the dexcom only last 10 days instead of 14 Sometimes I get a libre that is just perfect for 14 days and accurate but I'm sick of flipping a coin if the next sensor will end up helping to kill me quicker by telling me totally incorrect readings most of the time

2024.05.21 14:12 Saint82scarlet WIBTAH If I reported to the DVLA about my friends gf wanting to buy a car

My mates gf is type 1 diabetic, she has had loads of uncontrolled hyper and hypos where she has needed to go to hospital because of how poor her control is.
She wants to buy a car next month, I've already told my friend that it's a really bad idea, and legally she can't drive, because she has had too many hypos.
She looks after herself so badly, that she has actually had a lot of her intestines removed. She used to inject herself once every 3 days, instead of 3 times a day.
Her diet is extremely poor too, eating crisps constantly, and saying that it's ok for her.
I am type 2 diabetic, and I've reduced my bg from 120 down to 47, so I have done a lot of research.
She wants to waste what little money she has on a car, they are on benefits, and recently has spent a significant amount of money recently on essentially nothing. (She had back payment)
Thing is, I don't think my friend thinks I'm serious about her not legally being able to drive and my warning a few months ago, saying I would report her to the DVLA.
I don't know if I should do this anyway.

2024.05.21 13:48 rvinverter1 Efficient Storage Solutions for Solar Energy

Efficient Storage Solutions for Solar Energy
https://preview.redd.it/4mdonbj6pr1d1.jpg?width=5592&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4af2e6947ca45ec3f3bd8764788803b947747671
Photovoltaic (PV) power generation is a clean energy technology that converts solar energy into electrical power. This electricity can be used for distributed energy supply, playing a crucial role in sustainable development for modern society. However, PV power generation faces challenges of intermittency and instability, necessitating reliable storage methods to ensure a steady power supply. This article will provide a detailed overview of how electricity generated from PV systems is stored.
I. Principles of Energy Storage
The principle of energy storage is based on Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction, which involves converting electrical energy into magnetic or electric field energy for storage. During the storage process, energy is stored in the form of magnetic or electric fields within the storage devices. When needed, these stored energies are converted back into electrical energy through a reverse process.
II. Types of Energy Storage for PV Power
1. Battery Storage
Battery storage is a common method of storing electrical energy by converting it into chemical energy within batteries. Battery storage offers several advantages, including fast charging and discharging, high efficiency, compact size, and lightweight. Therefore, it is suitable for distributed energy supplies and electric vehicles. In PV power systems, battery storage can mitigate power fluctuations caused by weather changes and time-of-day differences, thus enhancing the reliability of power supply.
2. Supercapacitor Storage
Supercapacitors are an innovative form of energy storage that differ from traditional batteries by storing energy through electrostatic fields rather than chemical reactions. Supercapacitors have higher charge and discharge speeds and higher energy density, making them ideal for applications requiring rapid response and high power output. In PV systems, supercapacitor storage can balance power fluctuations and improve power quality.
3. Mechanical Storage
Mechanical storage converts electrical energy into mechanical energy for storage. Common forms include pumped hydro storage, compressed air energy storage, and flywheels. Mechanical storage has large capacity, mature technology, and low costs, making it suitable for large-scale energy storage and peak load shifting. In PV systems, mechanical storage can address excess energy and power quality issues, enhancing energy utilization efficiency.
III. Applications of Energy Storage Technologies in PV Systems
1. Battery Storage Systems in PV Applications
In PV power systems, battery storage systems can manage power fluctuations due to weather changes and time-of-day differences. These systems manage charging during periods of low power demand and discharging during periods of high demand, ensuring a stable power supply. Moreover, battery storage systems support bidirectional energy flow, facilitating distributed energy supply and microgrid operations.
2. Supercapacitor Storage Systems in PV Applications
Supercapacitor storage systems in PV power applications can balance power fluctuations and enhance power quality. Due to their rapid charge and discharge capabilities and high energy density, supercapacitors can quickly respond to changing power demands, easing peak load pressures and improving the stability and reliability of the power system.
3. Mechanical Storage Systems in PV Applications
Mechanical storage systems in PV power applications can solve excess energy and power quality problems. During periods of low power demand, mechanical storage systems convert electrical energy into mechanical energy for storage. During high demand periods, this mechanical energy is converted back into electrical energy. This not only addresses power surplus issues but also improves energy utilization efficiency. Additionally, mechanical storage systems can provide peak load shifting and frequency regulation, supporting the stable operation of the power grid.
There are various methods to store the electricity generated by PV systems, including battery storage, supercapacitor storage, and mechanical storage. Each method has distinct characteristics and applicable scenarios, and the choice of method should be based on specific needs. By selecting and applying appropriate energy storage technologies, the intermittency and instability issues of PV power generation can be mitigated, ensuring reliable distributed energy supply. This is vital for the sustainable development of modern society and the promotion of clean energy.

2024.05.21 12:57 CombatWeaponsWorld What are the main differences between a combat knife and a survival knife, and how do these differences affect their usage in various scenarios?

I've been expanding my knowledge on various types of knives and their uses, particularly those designed for combat and survival situations. I often see combat knives and survival knives being discussed in different contexts, but I'm a bit confused about what sets them apart.
From what I gather, combat knives seem to be designed primarily for fighting and tactical situations, while survival knives are intended to help you get through tough environments. However, I'm not clear on the specific design features that distinguish these two types of knives and how these features impact their effectiveness in their respective roles.
For example, I see knives like the KA-BAR being used by the military, but also recommended for survival purposes. On the other hand, knives like the Gerber LMF II are often highlighted for survival but are also noted for their combat capabilities. How do the design elements such as blade shape, material, handle, and overall construction differ between these two types, and how do these differences influence their performance in combat versus survival scenarios?

2024.05.21 12:47 LewisDKennedy A History of Doctor Who's Weekly TV Rankings

Since the viewing figures for Space Babies and The Devil's Chord released yesterday, I've seen a lot of people freaking out that neither episode made it much over 4 million viewers. Given that these numbers are around about what they were in 1989 when the show was cancelled, it seems many people think that the end is nigh, and RTD's relaunch has been a total failure.
This is however missing a lot of context. For starters, when the show was cancelled at the end of the 1980s there were only 4 channels. Home recording hardware was available, but extremely expensive and usually unaffordable for the majority of people. If you wanted to watch a show, you had to watch it live. 4 million in 1989 is in no way the same as it is in 2024.
Even since the show returned in 2005 the landscape has changed dramatically. Catchup and streaming services didn't exist yet. The digital switchover hadn't happened yet, meaning a large amount of people still only had 5 channels. Those that did have digitial TV were likely on freeview, which at most had about 50-60 channels. Today, we have thousands of channels on multiple digital media services, and thats not to mention the dozens of streaming platforms like Netflix, Prime, Disney+, and NOW that further divide the audience. We are never getting back the days where an episode can regularly reach 10m viewers. Comparing Series 14 viewing figures to Series 4 ones is utterly worthless.
So, how do we measure the health of the show compared to its own past?
Simple! We use the weekly rankings for the episodes, rather than the viewership numbers themselves. This is how music charts are compiled and no one has any issues with that system. Its also the only way to consistently measure the viewership, while still accounting for the change in viewing habits over the last 20 years.
I've seen a lot of people state that the show is as healthy as its ever been just like I am now, but without the numbers to back it up. Well, I've decided to bring those numbers.
I've compiled a spreadsheet of the weekly placing for every single episode back to 1963 taken from their first transmission date. This was done using figures from Doctor Who Guide, which is an excellent resource. The figures from the iPlayer age are compiled using their 7 day rating, which includes everyone who watched it within a week of transmission, as is standard procedure these days.
You can find my spreadsheet here. It's broken down by classic and revival eras, by each Doctor, and by each revival showrunner, but the graph on the first page is the entire history of the show.
So, what can we tell from these figures?
I love this show, and its saddening to see other people who love it scared for its future because scaremongers in the press (and sometimes from within the fandom itself) are willfully ignorant of the fact that things have changed so dramatically that we cannot measure them the same way that we used to.
Anyway, I hope you like my spreadsheet. Although I made it for my own enjoyment (yes I am very fun at parties) I thought it might be helpful to share.

2024.05.21 12:35 ManonFire63 Identity Politics and the Soul Part I

Christians are to love The Lord their God with all their Heart and Soul and Strength and Mind. This is the basis of Christianity. What does it mean to love God with your soul? What is the soul? Soul has a lot to do with identity. I would like to talk about identity politics; however, there is a learning curve. Someone may need to understand The Soul.
Discovering The Soul
When someone is talking about The Soul, which Soul are they referencing? Plato and The Soul? Abstract Philosophy God and the Soul? The Bible, and how The Bible references The Soul? Working to explain The Soul and The Bible, I have worked to do so in a way that your average person may be able to understand, and find or feel their soul. He are starting with a perception, we postulate that the Soul is a person, and has to do with decision making and identity, and given scripture, and various media or cultural references of The Soul, we may be able to see if we are right, and a bigger picture.
Given you understand what The Soul is in the Bible, someone may begin to understand exorcism. They may understand Identity Politics, and what it actually is in spiritual warfare. They may come out with greater understanding of creation and God.
The Basis of Christianity
Song to Preface this: Heuy Lewis "Heart and Soul."
What is a Soul? A soul is a person. Given a The King of Salem had 50 Souls, he had fifty persons or servants. How did they identify themselves? Possibly as a servant of The King of Salem in some way. Loving The Lord with all your SOUL, may have to do with identity. Who was someone serving? Was someone a Servant of "Something Else" or a Servant of God? A child of God? A son of God? These may be good things to be as a Christian looking to love God with your Soul or identity.
A couple years ago I lived in walking distance from Duke University. Given someone was a Duke fan, or Duke Alumni, or had a lot of Duke Paraphernalia, they may have loved Duke University. How did they love Duke University? They loved Duke with their Soul or Identity. Someone with a Duke T-Shirt may be saying something about who he is, or was, or would like to be. When Duke wins or has done well in basketball, someone who loved Duke with their Soul or identity, they may have rejoiced? They felt good? In their soul, they rejoice, and feel a sense of happiness. That is where the soul is. Given anyone has been a sports fan at some point, and has identified as a fan of ___________ their soul rejoices when their team does well. Given I was to look up Soul in a Bible concordance, there are many of these feeling or sensing type verses where the soul is a place inside someone where there is passion. Someone loving God with Their Soul in a world of materialism and commercialism may have given up their Nike and Adidas, to be more as "Plain as John the Baptist?"
Given a musician signed a record contract, and said record contract was very strict, did said musician "Sell their Soul?" Given a musician has to sing all the songs said record company tells them to, and be at A or B place at a certain time, as said record company tells them to, and said musician has very little free will, would that be "Selling The Soul?" Given the record company was a servant of "The Purple Gang," or Kabbalists, or some other group not serving God, that may have been someone selling their soul to the devil? When we get the basics of what the Bible describes the Soul to be, there are a lot of interesting topics that come up. The Truth hurts. Knowledge brings sorrow. Ignorance is bliss? Their is freedom in The Lord.
The Soul and Identity.
True Statements:
Marriage has been an important part of The Bible and Faith and growing in understanding.
Woman is meek before her husband. Man is meek before God. A woman loving her husband with her heart and soul may have taken his name. She is forging a new identity as Mrs. _____________. A married woman with a hyphenated last name is one foot in, one foot out? Who or what does she love more? Her husband or Feminism? Maybe she didn't quite want to leave her family and her old identity behind as a single female or "Daughter of?" Feminists tend towards socialism. Is a woman really married to her husband or more married to The State? Woman is meek before her husband. A man is meek before God.
Looking at the Soul like this, someone may be able to see God. (And Satan.) The Truth hurts. Knowledge brings sorrow. Ignorance is bliss?
Spirits
Given we are coming into an understanding of The Soul, what are Spirits? Spirits effect motivations. Here is a short list of some spirits mentioned.
What are these Spirits doing? They are influencing. They are effecting motivations. Someone with a seducing spirit or spirit of prostitution may have been on tinder in the wrong way? Someone with a lying tongue may have been a habitual liar? Someone with one of these spirits, their character may have been molded a certain way. Their soul, who they are, may have been molded to something. Part of their identity, even if it was subconscious, may have been molded to something. Some Spirits are generational. They may have been passed down from Generation to Generation. There may have been generational curses on some families. (Deuteronomy 5:9) Some spirits someone may have picked up by being in sin, and being unrepentant. Someone's Soul or character may have been molded around something.
Given someone has God's Holy Spirit, they say "Jesus is Lord." They may tend to think about God, and talk about God a lot, and be prone to God-centric activities. Their Soul, and God's Holy Spirit, overtime, may have entwined. They are "One with God" leading towards an understanding of Theosis.
