Il Était Un Bois (which translates as ‘A Tale of Wood’) is the latest release from venerable niche brand, L’Artisan Parfumeur.

It’s fair to say that, since their acquisition by Puig in 2015, L’Artisan’s catalogue has undergone significant revision. A lot of its most well-regarded (if not best selling) perfumes have been discontinued and the newer releases, while often well composed, perhaps don’t generate as much of an emotional response as their forbearers. Compares the likes of Voleur de Roses, Dzongkha and Passage D’Enfer (all, thankfully, still available) to the more recent Memoire de Roses, Un air de Bretagne and Couleur Vanille and you’ll see what I mean.

Still, L’Artisan are still capable of producing some interesting pieces of work and last year’s nostalgic peach scent, A Fleur de Peche, in particular, stirred something within.

What then of Il Était Un Bois? The marketing brief states that:
The perfume explores all the different facets of the woods in an unexpected harmony. Discover its warm notes of vetiver, sweet buckwheat and cedar

As a description, this did ring some alarm bells with me - how could a perfume that contained just three accords, only one of which was actually a wood, cover all the different facets of the material? Well, the answer, which was swiftly discovered upon smelling, was that it couldn’t. Obviously.

This perfume isn’t a tale of wood - it’s a tale of vetiver and, yes, buckwheat. Given that, the fact that L’Artisan also sought to try and connect the perfume thematically to previous release Merchant Loup (which played with the concept of an enchanted forest) is curious at best.
​
At this point, however, I will park my criticism because, if you ignore the spiel and focus on the scent, what you actually have a is a very pleasant unisex vetiver. Actually, the description for this one should have read ‘what if someone combined Lalique’s Encre Noire with a cereal bar?’ (I expect a call from L’Artisan’s marketing team after this published).

Damned by faint praise, you might think, but the thing is, Encre Noire, whilst being an excellent take on vetiver, was almost so heavy on me that it practically put a black cloud above my head. I was just one of those people who, as much as I would have liked, couldn’t get it to work on me, and I often wondered how the composition could be reinterpreted for individuals who wanted a bit more radiance from their fragrance. It’s possible perfumer Caroline Dumur might have been working on the same conundrum…and I suppose the fact that she cracked it goes to show why she’ has a job in the industry, and I’m just someone writing about fragrance!

The buckwheat incorporated along with the vetiver accord brings to mind a sweet powdered flour, and this has the effect of pulling the base notes up by their bootstraps and making the whole composition sing. In short, ‘Black Ink’ is transformed in to ‘White Chalk’ (perhaps the fragrance should have been named ‘Craie Blanche’?). The only downside is that, like Encre Noire, Il Était Un Bois is a relatively linear scent, but its performance is, I am pleased to say, exceptional.

The elephant in the room in comparing these two fragrances is that you can pick up a bottle of Encre Noire for around £20, whereas the L’Artisan release has an RRP of £170 for 100ml, which is, frankly, obscene if not unusual nowadays. I have no mitigating comments in this regard, except to say that Chanel’s Sycomore, which is another more refined take on the Lalique retails at £210 for just 75ml, and it doesn’t perform as well as this release. To some, that will be cold comfort, but if you want a top notch vetiver and don’t mind paying the money, this might be the choice for you.

To me pregnancy feels like some kind of obstacle course of de*th traps and I have a lot of anxiety. And still I seem to misstep time and time again. So sick of myself. Have so far eaten vacuum sealed smoked salmon, gotten two colds and five (!) yeast infections, petted goats, eaten rhubarbs straight from the garden without washing it, discovered mold in the bathroom… I don’t even remember everything. And everytime I feel so stupid. It also doesn’t help that I work with children with severe illnesses and genetic conditions and spend my days watching families who have had everything go wrong suffer.
So. We have and are renovating a very old cottage. Today i rediscovered an old hand made clock I had saved for renovation and started sanding it down. I was sitting outside but had the clock in my lap and was covered in sanded off paint on my shirt and hands and probably my face. Until my fiancé went “couldn’t that be lead paint?”. So f-ing stupid. I have even bought test swabs for this very reason. So I tested it and it was lead paint.
I called poison control but they don’t answer questions about pregnancy. Also, I know the damage is done, I’m just hoping someone knowledgeable or with experience can tell me how much damage? From what I understand, sanding and inhalation is the worst thing you can do regarding lead.
Anyone?

J'entends le micro s'allumer tout seul. Là, il y a un commencement d'ouverture en fondue de la musique. Oh putain, ils sont là. Ils sont là, les méchants, les guimauves de l'info. However, the answer key states the correct order is:
De jongens spelen graag buiten in de zomer
I would assume “in the summer” was a time, but here, it seems to act as a place. Is that correct? Why is that?

Okay that that's out of the way. Hi I'm a teen that really needs some help. I'm under 18 and will keep my age private due to privacy reasons. My ex, who we will call deb, she and I were dating for a few months back all the way into 2022 and 2023. The relationship ended on pretty good terms considering what she did. So some things about me that need to be included is that I have trust issues and am fatherless (have a father that I cut from my life since he is not fit to be a father) so me and Deb met on tiktok, it was a video where you put a rabbit if you want friends and a fox if you wanted to be friends with that person. I put a fox onto her tt msg of a rabbit. So we followed each other and we started talking, it was a bit hard to contain the friendship since of the timezones. She lives in America and I lived in the Germany. So I made it work, I stayed up and talked with her. I made sure I got plenty of sleep but it was hard. I ended up leaving my other ex on actual peaceful and good terms since we both fell out of love. Deb was there for me and my other friends. So she started introducing me to her friends. And I'll just say I hated her friends. All except for maybe one. One day I met this guy friend of hers. Let's call him dexter. So I was hanging out with them both and after some time I received a msg on my phone from dexter. I went to check it out and he says 'name I'm so sorry.. deb committed sucde' I stopped moving. It was hard to even breath for me at that moment. I myself have had a history of self h@rm due to family trouble. I kept asking him, "Why? Did I do something? Was I too clingy? Why did she do it?" Ofcourse he said after some messages of me begging him for answers that it was a prank. He blamed it on deb that she wanted to do it and I stopped even loving her at that moment. I texted her and asked for a break up, I relapsed that day. I broke my promises of stopping. So I stopped talking with her and any of her friends since then. But one of her friends kept talking with me.
One thing I forgot to mention is I will be writing this along as it was in real life. So the most things she did will be showed with the time line. Ty if you are reading this
He had a mental illness so he slept through most of the day, I didn't care and found it a bit strange since we both were debs ex'. So after some time one of his friends texted me and said that friend liked me. I declined quickly and we stopped talking. But like a month later deb texted me again, I was kinda furious with her but kept the emotions to myself and we became friends again. I decided to let go of the past. But she told me she still likes me. I told her I can't force myself to like her and that was the end of the conversation. 2024 came around as we kept talking. No feelings were ever felt for her during that time and she ends up confessing to me. I stopped moving. I had to decline her. I said I was sorry over and over again. And I told her. 'I just can't love you like I used to because of the prank you did.' That's when she told me dexter forced her. Ofcourse he did because he always lies. He lied about adopting three kids, he lied about his teacher making him stay in school till 7pm. He lied a lot. So I took her word for it. She took a break from me and I understood until. One of her school friends got my info from I don't know but we started talking and she told me deb dated me and two other guys at the same time. That broke me and I ended up yelling at her. That is when we lost contact. I cut contact with all of her friends except the school one that told me that. She even showed me proof. The day deb asked me out, 15 minutes before she asked me out she agreed to date someone and after that she asked me out. I'm incredibly sorry for yelling at her but it broke me completely.
So am I the asshole?

In order to understand the third paragraph of Marteau’s Particularités Analogiques, we have to place his card within the historical context of Tarot de Marseille tradition, which starts with the 1639 deck attributed to Philippe Vachier, the earliest known TdM. Vachier’s Le Fol is depicted as the quintessential wanderer, with his bindle hanging off the end of a staff balanced over his shoulder and trekking pole in his right hand. He is out in the open, journeying we-know-not-where, dressed in the motley and floppy crown of a court jester; his face and hands are white – absent of color – which matches the broad white stripe below his golden belt. His face and hands are an even whiter shade of non-color than the featureless backdrop, but interestingly, his leggings and long sleeves are flesh-colored. Behind him is an animal which some recognize as a dog, others a cat; Marteau identifies it as a dog, so that is how I will also refer to it from this point forward. It appears the dog is reaching at a rent in Le Fol’s hose: perhaps it is responsible for shredding the leggings, or perhaps the tear was already present and caught the dog’s attention; we cannot say for certain. Nor do we know what the relationship between Le Fol and the dog is: it may be the dog is a companion on the road, or it may be that, as some have suggested, the dog is chasing a stranger away. In either case, Le Fol’s expression suggests that he is either unaware or unconcerned; his eyes are raised toward some distant horizon only he can see.
What is most intriguing, however, is that beneath the flesh-colored hose is dark green under-hose; what is revealed, then, is not the man beneath the costume but more of the costume. We cannot know for certain what Vachier was thinking when he elected to portray Le Fol in this way, but we can hypothesize from more general patterns.
Typically, clothing symbolizes persona, the person as presented rather than the person as is. An individual covers himself in a persona to fit into a collective social structure and identify what role he plays in said structure, but typically also, when we tear away the constructed outer layer, we find the individual within, which would be represented by his flesh. A common dream motif for many people is discovering that they are naked, “exposed.” This not only separates them from those around them (who are all fully clothed) but makes them vulnerable to judgments. Another function of the persona is it protects us from being seen, preventing others from observing those bits of us we do not want them to see because they embarrass us or because they are the aspects of us most sensitive to criticism and other attacks.
A few years after Vachier, a cardmaker working out of Paris, Jean Noblet, marketed a deck in which the most iconic image featured a similarly clad figure also named Le Fol but whose leggings were torn to a far greater degree, revealing underneath not only fleshy buttocks but fully exposed genitalia as well. Again, unfortunately, we cannot know what message, if any, Noblet meant to convey with his ribald depiction; however, we can note another striking difference between these two cards: while the Vachier figure’s flesh is white, Noblet’s is ruddy with blood and human warmth, except for his hands, which retain the strikingly bloodless white coloring consistent with the Vachier.

Ensuing cardmakers in what became the Tarot de Marseille style mostly elected to follow the Vachier model. There were a few exceptions that did not go as far as Noblet but did show naked flesh-colored flesh under the rent hose; however, they were a decided minority until Paul Marteau released his deck in 1930 and introduced a kind of revival in this presentation.
Marteau did not break with tradition in this matter arbitrarily; his commentary makes evident that he thought deeply about the meaning of every detail, and we might have hoped that, being an expert in Tarot de Marseille symbolism, he would have compared and contrasted his deck with historical counterparts, meticulously explaining how the choices he made brought the cards into alignment with his philosophy. This, however, was never really an option, as Marteau promoted his deck as a faithful reproduction of the one published by Nicolas Conver in 1761, a master cardmaker in Marseille who, himself, “preserved the woods and colors of his remote predecessors” – a fiction that enabled Marteau to market his own work as the “Ancien Tarot de Marseille”; thus, any discussion of changes he made would only have served to undercut that claim.[[i]](#_edn1)
Marteau opens the third paragraph of his Particularités Analogiques writing that the visible region of flesh (“Le coin de chair visible”) represents man’s basest aspect, the part of him that remained animal (“est la partie la plus basse de lui-même, la partie restée animale en lui”).
Marteau’s premise is that Le Mat is on an evolutionary journey; his clothing typifies the collective aspect of that evolution, as it is the most obvious outward symbol of how man has risen from a purely instinctive and unconscious mode of being into a state of expanded awareness, not only of himself but his role within a social collective. When this is torn away, a far more primal and universal truth is revealed, one which has been increasingly concealed under layers of acculturation; it is the part of us that cannot be refined through education or social status and, thus, remains the source of our most profound shame, yet this is where the dog is able to make contact. In this paragraph, Marteau not only explains the nature of this contact but its wider significance.
My attempts at translation differ from those of Kitos Digiovanni, who writes that the dog “nips” at the “lowest part of him,” [[ii]](#_edn2) and Marius Høgnesen’s, who writes that “the dog hassles … the lowest part of man, the part representing the animal, that remains in him.” [[iii]](#_edn3) Both Digiovanni and Høgnesen characterize the nature of this contact as active, if not aggressive, and that coincides with what seems to be popular consensus. The respected tarot scholar Robert M. Place writes, “In the Tarot of Marseilles.... The seat of the Fool’s pants is being torn by a dog. This is meant to be comical, but it also signifies that the dog is treating him as a stranger, an assumption that is further supported by the fact that he is carrying a bag of belongings on his shoulder. The early Franciscans, who wandered through the countryside preaching and begging, found that they were treated with suspicion at first, and, like our Fool, they had to fend off the attacks of dogs.” [[iv]](#_edn4)
It is not my intention to argue whether this is a correct or incorrect interpretation of the image; tarot cards reflect the psychological motifs through which we view and make sense of the outer world. They help us to become more self-aware; thus, there are no right or wrong answers any more than there are correct or incorrect responses to picture interpretation or inkblot tests. My only concern is what Paul Marteau meant when he wrote, “sur lequel s’appuie le chien.”
“Le chien” is dog; “sur lequel” is the equivalent of “on which.” The key to comprehending Marteau’s interpretation of the image resides in how we translate “s’appuie,” which I understand to come from the infinitive “appuyer” and means “to press,” “to push,” or “to lean,” according to the Collins dictionary translator. This coincides with the Google, Reverso, and Bing translators as well, which also add “to support” to the list. Thus, the dog is not attacking and driving off an unwelcome stranger, nor is it tearing at Le Mat’s hose; the contact is less aggressive.
“S’appuie” is the reflexive form of the infinitive; therefore, it would mean “the dog leans itself” or “presses itself” upon the visible region of flesh; I translate it as “supports itself,” and render the first sentence, “The visible region of flesh in man, on which the dog supports itself, represents his [man’s] basest aspect, the part of him that remained animal.”
The commentary continues, “It is bare because despite the habiliments he has created for himself throughout the course of his evolution, he cannot deny it. The dog also represents a vestige of past failures that disconcert man in his forward march.” (Elle est nue, parce que malgré les habits qu’il s’est créés au cours de l’évolution, il ne peut s’en détacher. Marteau suggests Le Mat is looking forward rather than paying attention to the dog trailing him because the presence of the dog is an unwanted reminder of his failings and the fundamental nature that he would prefer to shed. In this sense, the dog is like the bindle, which contains man’s collective inheritance resulting from the Fall into carnal existence: it is attached by fixed rings to the staff he carries to prevent Le Mat from removing it and freeing himself of its weight. We may refer to ourselves as individuals and adhere to the mythology that we are singular, but this arcanum reminds us our lives are burdened by the accumulated history and transgressions of all mankind.
Finally, Marteau writes, “This dog furthermore symbolizes an inferior stage of life that tends to lift itself up and follow man; just as man raised himself above the animal plane, he must not forget while advancing toward his evolution his fall brought him back to a primeval state, and in his march he must inspire the lower creatures to evolve around him.” (Ce chien symbolise encore un plan de vie inférieur qui tend à s’élever et à suivre l’homme; de même que l’homme s’est élevé au-dessus du plan animal, celui-ci ne devant pas oublier qu’en marchant vers son évolution, sa chute l’a ramené au rang de l’animalité et que dans sa marche il doit faire évoluer autour de lui les créatures inférieures).
The dog is a less-evolved animal, yet it too feels the call to advance; it cannot accomplish this alone. Le Mat’s evolutionary march is not solely for his benefit; he has a responsibility to all living things, for he also arose from a primitive state, and just as he is inspired to become something more, he must engender this same inspiration in others.

Hello everyone! I’m looking to apply for 801/820 partner visa. I am an Australian citizen and my partner is a Chinese national. She was most recently on a graduate visa, but is now on a tourist visa (not sure which one exactly) but it’s expiring next month June 14th. I want to get her on a partner visa. We applied for the de facto status earlier this month on the 7th of may I believe. However, upon looking around the web, it seems like there isn’t a solid or definite answer for partner visa applications. My partner and I met last year in April. We started really talking to each other in may. She then went overseas for about two months returning at the end of July. We started dating on the 3rd of August. That period of time overseas, I spent a ridiculous amount of time constantly on call with her or just messaging her, even though we weren’t ’dating’ at that time. When she got back, she was renting by herself at a new place, and once we started dating I was constantly over during the day, and if not staying the night as well. (A lot of evidence). We went for our first trip overseas together for two weeks last September and prior to that I picked up a second job to manage/gather enough finances to support our relationship. We also had a few trips within NSW, to Canberra and Kiama and some few other places. Anyway, we had our first big holiday beginning of this year where we went overseas for 2 months where we spent all of it together. I also had the chance to meet her familiy and live with them for most of the trip. As soon as we got back, she stayed at my parents house for 2 months as we settled down and started getting back into routine. Fast forward to April, we finally moved in together. We also registered for a defacto relationship in may, have the receipt but awaiting processing time. I have a few questions: - How is each application assessed and is there anything big or specific I should consider? Do I have to consider biases or not? - our relationship has been short, and we are both very young. However we have both experience tremendous growth in individuality and mathrity and we can prove it - does time matter here then? - our defacto registration was only earlier this month and we are still awaiting the processing time to finish before we receive our certificate - this is something I am confused about - it says that we have to have been in a defacto relationship for 12 months on the official immigration website however other sites such as Facebook reddit and travel agencies say that this doesn’t matter - I would like to hear the different experiences people have had with this step
I know this is an extremely long list of questions and I feel like the majority has already been answered however i think if I keep snooping around the internet and just seeing different answers and opinions it kind of stuffs up the approach I should take towards this, so I just decided to ask myself.
