2024.05.19 04:55 ArteM-Pro my idea for Jason's moveset (and himself overall I guess)

Class - tank
He will be the "heaviest" character in the game, he will be extremely durable to knockback, but he himself deals insane knockback. However, his dash would be EXTREMELY slow, almost similar to his walking speed. His jumps would also be the lowest out of all characters. In the movies Jason is incredibly strong and throws stuff like it's nothing, but he always walks slowly while hunting for his prey.
Moveset:
Jab - 3 hit jab, and each hit every time is a random weapon: either a slash with a machete, stab with an arrow (reference to one of his first kills ever if I remember correctly) or a hit with a hand.
Dash-hit - he just walks. Aggressivly. Literally. His whole body becomes a hit box, he walks like that for a second before stopping. A reference to him always, menacingly, walking to his victims.
Side tilt (chargable) - Jason places a wall and walks trough it, dealing a huge knockback. He gains armor while charging. Opponent can break the wall while charging, and if the wall breaks, move will deal less knockback
Down tilt (chargable) - Jason seemingly "drowns" into the stage and after 1 second he goes back up, grabbing an opponent and throwing in a forward direction. While charging he can slightly move while he is in "drowned" state.
Up tilt - a heavy swing with an axe from his front, arching to his back, stopping while he performs it (yes, Ganondorf's up smash)
Air down tilt - a stone chained to Jason appears, plunging him with it to the ground (another reference to his movies).
Air side tilt - he takes a slug from "Jason goes to hell" and swings it down-up-down.
Air up tilt - swing with an axe, like his up tilt, but less powerful.
I don't remember if there is an air basic hit in multiversus, but here is the idea anyway - he makes quick stabs with his machete in both sides, from front to back
Specials
Basic special - he grabs his moms sweater and holds it in front of him. If the sweater gets damaged by opponent's attack, it enrages him, making him slightly, just slightly faster and also preforming and charging his attacks a little bit quicker. This move would have a 25 second cooldown, even if the sweater wasn't damaged. The sweater could also be taken by his teammates and it would stay on them for 8 seconds. Breaking a sweater on a teammate would make them enraged instead (for Jason it would mean losing his dead mom's sweater. For his teammates - losing a cozy sweater)
Air Basic special - it's the same, but he falls slightly slower while holding the sweater.
Down special - a reference to "Friday the 13th 8: Jason takes manhattan". Jason enters a stance where he stands in one place. Damage from each hit he receives during this stance would be halved and he he would recieve only 10% knockback. If he takes 5 hits during this stance, he would be enraged just like in his basic special. This is a reference to a scene where Julius hits Jason several times and he does absolutely nothing, and when Julius gets tired, Jason hits his head off with 1 punch. This move would have a 10 second cooldown.
Achieving "rage" would be easier with his basic special. His down special is easily readable and requires several hits to activate rage, when the sweater appears suddenly, guaranteeing a hit.
Air Down special - it would be a missed opportunity to not include one of the most famous objects from Friday the 13th movies - a canoe. Jason sits in the canoe, stays in the air for a little before plunging down. The speed with which canoe falls increases progressively. This move would NOT have a cooldown, because If he uses it offstage it would mean a certain death for him. High risk - high reward.
Side special - Jason grabs an opponent by their throat and holds them in front of him. He can walk while holding them, but he can't hit them. Pressing side special again would release an opponent. Opponents can break out of his grab, but it would be harder if they have high percentage. This move would allow Jason to take his opponents to the sides where he can finish them off. This move would have a 6 second cooldown.
Air Side special - Jason grabs an opponent, but instead of holding them, he immediately throws them in the direction you choose (instead of up, would be too op)
Up special (chargable)- Jason teleports for a certain distance. The longer you hold the up special, the longer will be the distance. There will be a certain mark pointing at the place jason would teleport. If Jason teleports at the exact place where opponent stands, he would appear right behind them, stunning them (in fear) for 2 seconds. If Jason teleports behind an opponent, but not at the exact place as them, he would face in their direction. This move would have a 7.5 seconds cooldown. This move would reward perfect timing, but it would also be a good way to compensate his slow speed. It is also very menacing in a way that even if Jason suddenly disappears from your view, it doesn't mean that you had disappeared from his.
Air up special(chargable) - Jason teleports up. The longer he holds up special, the longer will be the distance. However, it would have a limit and wouldn't be as far as his ground version. He is also slowed down a bit during falling when he charges this move.
I hope I covered all moves! If I forgot something, write in the comments and I will fix it.
Now, for the other stuff:
Skins - classic hockey mask, bag-head from 2nd movie, cyber-jason from Jason X
Emotes: Free emote - Jason pulls out his machete, and touches its tip with his finger.
Paid emote: Jason pulls his mask up, but his face wouldn't be seen. Instead there would be a pixel filter.
Jason would not have voicelines however, he would make some grunts. If he is facing up against a teenager character (Steven, shaggy, Finn etc.), he would make a long, angry grunt.
If cyber Jason skin is equipped, all his weapons would be futuristic.
I really hope it's him who will be revealed on Monday. It would be so dope!

2024.05.18 21:19 SeekingHealth78 Help and Advice Sought if possible (UK)

Hello
Could I get some advice and guidance on what all these tests might mean and what I need to learn and know should my Endocrinologist head down the route of TRT, which is where she has indicated over the past couple of months whilst doing tests?
I apologise for the length, but I have tried to cover it as much as possible, as I accept nothing is simple. If more information is needed that I have missed, please ask.
Thanks

Stats
History
I was overweight for a good 20 years; we think this was when my thyroid started causing issues, and it took many years for the NHS to even consider that a problem. I also had no morning erections for a good ten years. I honestly cannot remember the last time I felt hungry, and that was after either an hour of weight lifting or hiking for a full day in the Austrian Alps (the longest one was a 10km round trip and a 1200m climb and then descent).
It took several years to sort the thyroid, and I was still unable to lose weight, although other things had resolved themselves. My GP refused to investigate further, saying simply I was too young. Plus, back in 2019, my Testosterone level was 17.1nmol/L, and now it is down to 7.5, and apart from being a few years older, nothing else has changed weight-wise or fitness, etc. I have had many Covid jabs as my father was extremely vulnerable, and I was his carer.
I am now under a different GP practice that started from scratch and said that, in their opinion, something underlying was causing the myriad of symptoms. They started testing and thought she knew what was wrong. It was agreed that, in computer terms, there was a tick box that needed ticking, but finding which one would take time.
However, their final idea saw her ask for guidance from Endocrinology; they said to do nothing and that they would take over. This was in 2023. However, Testosterone issues are an ultra-low priority in my area, so my expected appointment is in 2025.
For the past few months, I have seen an Endocrinologist privately with the agreement of my GP, who has done all the requested tests and agreed that if any prescriptions are needed, they will do it.
In addition to the above, dieticians have cleared me, having seen them privately and on the NHS.
I spent a year with a personal trainer at a bodybuilder gym, working out with him three times a week with no results and stopped through no results but with growing mental and physical fatigue. Walking 10,000 steps a day is not a problem for me.
I have had this all on hold for a while, what with COVID-19 and then a relative's very poor health. It is now time to focus back on myself, I think. I sleep a good 8 hours a night and get up feeling worse than going to bed – although randomly, I do have bouts of insomnia.
As mentioned to my GP and Endocrinologist, I have no problem putting in the hard work at the gym, but when that hard work does absolutely nothing for muscle mass or body shape, etc., it gets very depressing. I guess that does give me one direct question: How long do I need to leave it before going back if my Endocrinologist prescribes TRT—do I need to let my body recover a bit before stressing it by doing weights, etc.?
Tests (Using UK NHS Scales)
Testosterone has been done now 6 or 7 times, always within 0.2 or below and always done between 08:50 and 09:10 in the morning.
In addition, she requested an ultrasound, and the results came back as 29mm AP diameter and 19mm AP diameter, respectively, for the testes.

2024.05.18 21:19 YourBoiEcho 28 [M4F] Southeast U.S Fun Enjoying Man Seeking a Relationship with an Indian Girl

Hello! Looking for my forever person! Someone who shares my feelings and desire to want to be in a relationship. I'm a 6' 1'' American. I am very kind and understanding to others. I tend to be a good empathizer and listener when it comes to other people having issues and helping them overcome issues. I really strive to make people happy. I am very fun loving and deeply enjoy showing people a good time! Work related stuff I sort of feel like sharing is that I have my associates degree in I.T. as well as a Bachelor's in Cyber Security and currently work an office job that has pretty good pay. This was especially true when I got promoted a couple of times in the past two years. I've been rewarded many time and recognized for good work frequently.
The reason for my preference towards Indians is because at my previous university in Northern Virginia I was able to join it's Indian Student Association when they had a booth at a club rush event I stumbled upon one night before my statistics class. They said they took anyone so I joined wanting to see and enjoy a new culture. I really enjoyed doing stuff there and made great friends and almost got an internship thanks to one of my friends I made there...... then I got news that I would be moving again with my parents which made me sad, that is a story for anyone who wants to hear it another time.
For hobbies I enjoy playing PC games, (such as Helldivers 2, Paladins, Cyberpunk 2077, RTS games, etc.. and always willing to try new games) board games, cooking, and trying new foods (especially Indian food since I love spicy foods). One thing to note with my eating, I am not vegetarian, though I do not mind vegetarians and am willing to do that sort of thing around family if need be, though I have mushroom and peanut allergies. I have been learning Hindi on Duolingo. In my free time I like to take pictures and am highly interested in photography. I do not smoke/or vape and I drink socially and mix cocktails. I like walking, hiking, window shopping, traveling and snuggling. While I have no issues with someone who is Hindu and such, however unless your family is okay with someone who is Catholic like me I would prefer if someone is either Christian or Catholic. Just to avoid potential family disagreements and drama.
As for what I know about Indian culture, I only saw a couple of Bollywood films Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Jab We Met. I am really interested in watching more Bollywood films and learning trivia about the actresses and actors. I am aware of Salman Khan’s crazy antics for example. Another Bollywood film I would want to watch is RRR and Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani. I would love to watch it with someone and learn more about it. I do get to see some stuff about it on twitter from some accounts I follow but I don’t really understand it much. Many of the actors and actresses I hear come up are Rajinikanth, Sri Devi, Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, and Keerthi Suresh. Again I am willing to learn more about all the interesting details about Bollywood and such. I am familiar with some parts of Indian history like the Kargil War, the recent farmers protest and the horrific Goan Inquisition. I would like to start out slow as a casual acquaintance and test the waters with someone. I’m not comfortable rushing headfirst into a relationship and I understand that neither would you, so being friends first is a must. I really want to get to know someone so that we can both be compatible. I am somewhat open to long distance relationships so whether you are from India, UK, etc don't be discouraged to hmu. But I would prefer someone already in the U.S. Lastly I don't want someone who'll waste my time. I don't like being led on and dumped out out the blue. Please be serious and committed.
I can talk on reddit though I like talking off reddit. Contact me anytime if you are feeling the same way about finding a life long partner and feel free to ask me any questions. :)

2024.05.18 20:27 Idaten-Jump-1212 Parents won't listen to me.

Hello all, this one's gonna be long so please bear with me.
A li'l context - GNEM here. Didn't have Maths in my UG so I'm very very weak at it. Joined EG after hearing the great reviews but couldn't watch the videos since I was busy with my finals. Now that I've graduated there are A LOT OF pending videos which I am watching & trying to catch up with the current topics. Had made up my mind to purchase VARC1000 for VARC, AIMCAT, SIMCAT & CL mocks.
Everything was going fine until one day my parents suddenly decided to put me into an offline batch since 'Online mai kya hi padhai hoti hai' even though it's in the neighbouring city (travelling will take around 2 hrs), is expensive & honestly won't benefit me much. Now I'm gonna be enrolled in TIME/IMS (haven't decided yet). And THEY JUST WON'T LISTEN TO ME NO MATTER WHAT.
Please tell me how do I prep with such a hectic schedule? Don't come at me with 'Try to convince your parents' since they won't. Ik them. Since childhood I have to follow whatever they say.
I have made up this a routine to do these apart from attending coaching & solving their material -
FOR QUANTS - • Watch EG's videos & solve their assignments and tests. • Solve Arun Sharma's LOD1 & 2
FOR DILR - • Again, watch EG's vids & solve their assignments & tests. • Solve questions fron Anastasis ShankaAptitude Jab's playlists if time permits.
FOR VARC - • Complete 3-4 RCs from GMAT club & RC99 each • Read 2 Aeon's essays daily • Solve a few parajumbles
Along with this I plan to take Cracku's daily free mocks on completion of a topic.
Is this too hectic? Or am I going all wrong? Please correct me.

2024.05.18 17:41 DontDoItBob Desi vs first world countries - my observation so far

Har jagah k log kuch na kuch ulti sidhi chije krte hai. Hum desi bhi krte hai. To socha ek post share Kru. Offend nhi krne ka mujhe kisi Ko, bs jo observe Kia hai vo likha.. sahi aur galat aap decide kro.
India Mai humne observe krke yahi sekha hai patiently wait nhi krna. Jaha place mile ghus jao.. chahe vo tum ho, ya tumari gadi. Bs ghusa do. Jaha free ka kuch mile tott pado..
Fortunately maine kuch countries solo ghumi hui hai and Starting ke time Maine kuch ese cheje observe ki dusare countries Mai mujhe thodi odd lagi. Fir logically socha to sense banne lagi. Abhi bhi I'm not perfect but Haan thoda control/change Aya hai. Ye post likhne ka idea es liye aya kyuki abhi Mai Apne parents k sath West Mai hu and firse Wahi cheje dekhne Ko Mili jo maine ki thi. But this time ye thoda alag hai. Abhi Kuch cheje India k Metro cities Mai Hoti hai kuch nhi. maine points likhe hai, Aajo samjhata hu..
Waiting in queue - example deta hu: ek line hai, aur counter hai do. But line counter 1 ke aage hai. To hum assume krte hai ki "yaha aja, dekh 2 no. ke aage Khali hai"
Humme na sikhaya hai na bataya kisi ne ki bhai patience kya Hoti hai. Chahe vo Line Mai chup chap khade hona ya apni turn ka wait krna, ye I guess India Mai sirf airport checkin counter par he hota hai.
Sidewalk/footpath - Hum bc chalte hai jese hum Malik hai eske. West mai mostly log will not utter a single word. They'll just patiently wait ki Kahi se thoda rasta mile to cross kre. Otherwise vo apke piche chalte rahege.
Constant stare - Ye wali chej to bhai.. ladki, ladka, gay, trans, lesbian, homeless, kutta, bili, raincoat wala kutta, rubber shoes wali bili. Humko dekhna he hai jee bhar k, ache se. (Yes, pets ke bhi yaha pakade hote hai) Bhahar se nikale but Restaurant ke andar kya chal rha hai Humme dekhna he hoga Ruk ke. lol.
Greetings - kisi cafe mai gye. Counter par ladki: "hi, how are you guys?". We: "2 cappuccinos double double".
Usse pehle menu dekhna hai apun logo ko ekdam bich Mai khade hoke. Rasta block ho rha ho, koi baat nhi.
Loud burp (डकार लेना)- tum khana kha lo ya beer pi lo. डकार to ese Lena hai jese bc dushman desh ka tank udana ho. Restaurant ho, train mai, plane mai ya kahi open area. Kya kare Maza nhi ata bina liye. 2-3 funny stores bhi hai burp ki mere pas bta Dena if interested Mai share kr duga
Fukare/bloddy show off - Rear windshield par for some reason 'haryana' ya 'punjab' likha hoga. I'm sure local must assume ye car owner ka Naam hoga. And Custom number plates Apne surname ya cast ki (concept mast lagta hai mereko)
Rules - vo kya hai ji. Road wale ya pedestrian wale. Road wale I can't explain to Brampton driving subreddit dekh Lena. Pedestrian wale simple hai, J walk krna. Sidewalk pr bhi yaha signal hota hai ki kab kare road cross. And people follow. Road chahe Khali bhi kyu na hu. Par you know sab log signal ka wait nhi krte.
Phele aap - 500m counter ke piche khade ho jao ya building ka darwaja open krna ho. Yaha log chup krke door pakad lege apke liye. Counter se dur khade ho ese he, par vo tumare piche khade ho jayege and sayad he ye puche ki "are you guys in line?"
We so emotional - this is something that make us special I guess. Recent Ek incident share krta hu.. city cruise par gaya tha parents k sath. Waha bar counter par Indian ladka tha. Naam se notice kra parents ne. To baate krne Lage. Maine bhi bhai Ko hello kra. 1 hr baad jab exit k time usko parents ne bye bola and usne mere parents k feet touch kre. Then I thought humare sanskar har jagah sath rehte hai.
Homeless people - Humare wale Gareeb hath jodd k paise ya khane k mangte hai. Yaha walo Ko to govt paise k sath fresh Syringes bhi deti hai. Lol.
Neverending Thank you and sorry - Har ek chej par tumko thank you bolege and sorry bolne ka to Act bhi nikal Dia hai. 'The Apology Act' in Canada.
So that's it. Sayad kuch cheje apko pta bhi na pata ho ki aap unintentionally kr dete hai. Jese Mere liye Line toddna tha, lol.
Let me know if you have observed similar behaviour ya kuch aur chej jo mere se miss ho gyi ho.
Ek aur chej.. paise jodo aur ghumane jao. Duniya bhut badi hai. Bhut kuch Naza sekhne aur dekhne Ko milta hai :)

2024.05.18 16:43 Substantial_Swim9968 LIVE Fury vs Usyk Boxing: Looking for Stream Links

This Saturday (May 18th) is gonna be HUGE! Fury vs Usyk for the undisputed heavyweight title?

🔴Visit🥊► Boxing Streams

🔴Watch🥊 Fury vs Usyk Live

Problem is, paying for the PPV ain't exactly in the cards right now. Anyone out there have any leads on streams for the fight?
I know, I know... free streams can be a gamble. Definitely don't want to end up with malware that stings worse than a Usyk jab.
Looking for safe and legal options, if possible. Even if it's just pointing me in the right direction, that would be awesome.
Otherwise, maybe someone can share their fight night predictions in the comments to ease the pain? Who y'all got? Fury's power or Usyk's skills?
Thanks in advance!

2024.05.18 12:28 Just_While2954 Week 6 gains… a setback 😞

Week 6 of 2.5mg
F28 184cm SW:109.2kg/240.7lb CW:102.6kg/226lb GW: 82kg/181lb
⚖️ Losses: After 5 solid weeks, this week came as a disappointment, albeit not a surprise! I have “gained” 1.6kg/3.5lb this week. I use parentheses because the night before weigh-in, I ate a fairly sizeable Chinese take away, 2 massive blue slushies, and hadn’t been able to go to the toilet. So, I don’t think I will have actually gained that much, although I do think I’ve gained some. I decided not to do a second weigh the day after / couple of days after as I’m not that obsessed and it will rectify itself over the next week. This week, I definitely felt the efficacy of the 2.5 dose drop for me. I have smoked a fair bit of 🍃 , but I hadn’t been experiencing the munchies until this week. I’ve eaten one meal a day most days, but it was always a take-out, and full of things like gluten which I can’t tolerate and always cause me to bloat etc.
❌ No excuses, my accountability was off this week, and it’s my fault. I haven’t monitored hydration, protein, fibre, anything. I’ve had almost nothing good for me! I’ve journaled about it, and I feel “back on track”, ready for next week.
‼️ Side effects: Side effects this week have been quite bad, but that’s mainly on account of me eating so badly. As I’ve been so healthy and organised the past 5 weeks, I think my body really felt all the junky processed food, heavy food, lots of sugar, gluten etc. so some of that bad feeling will have been my body’s natural response, but I’ve definitely noticed a persistent nausea. I’ve also had a few dizziness episodes, general coldness, and tiredness. I’ve also been more constipated this week which hasn’t been an issue for me up until now, but this will have also been impacted by my eating. Oh, and I woke up one morning after a take away, and exploded from both ends. Generally feel anxiety and depression is improved.
💊 Dosage: Last week, I had decided to continue with the 2.5mg dose for the remainder of May, I have a 5mg pen that runs out at the end of June, which I don’t want to waste, but also, an entirely full 2.5mg pen I also don’t want to waste, but that my lovely pharmacist gave to me for free. After my first gain week, and really feeling the food noise come back, I have decided to move up. I think I did pretty well out of the 2.5mg anyway, having lost 8.2kg/18.2lb in 5 weeks. I ended up doing a lot of reading about and scrolling through Reddit and other places and decided to do a double dose of 2.5mg. I’m at the thighs for jabs now, stomach and arms done, so this was the first week in the leg… and I had to do it in both sides! It was totally painless, and I got the pens straight out of the fridge this week, made no pain difference at all compared with leaving it out for a couple of hours which I usually do.
🟰 So total loss… 6.6kg/14.7lb... Still looks really good, but I think I probably haven’t gained as much as it said on the scale yesterday. Looking forward to a strong week 7!
Sending you all love! x

2024.05.17 15:51 JohnTheLeader The Funeral (Diss on Tank) feat Gnat and Danny

Danny's verse: What's good what's good. Dear Mr I'm too good to write the stans. This is the last package we will ever send your ass. It's your eulogy, stupid geek. Hope you like it. Took me 3 beers and a jelly sandwich to write it. Back on the track 3 days later. You honestly don't even deserve it. Ofc, you got our last diss cause bitch it was perfect. Deleted it out of respect. But now we got to come through with the kill, then we will shoot ya. Here is the double tap to this fucking brat and the rest of the Hangar Pact, time to cut the track like a lumberjack. Can't believe you need Free to chuck a jab. Using corrupt Police Bars just to talk smack. What the fuck is up with that. Only places your punchlines land is a fucking punching bag. Cut the act. I bet this barrel will fit where your apparel will fit. More street cred than Avatar? Dude im barely convinced. Both of you used the same parachute cords when your time took a plunge. Fire shots at the entire block. Zareem how could I be afraid of death when I die alot. I heard Repi disowned you. Bitch I might adopt. Pop up buying shots. Left your tabs open, Firefox. And how this bitch is tweeting from inside a box. Did you fall out boy and now you tryna rock? Nice tat, no go binge on a giant fucking cock. You got Hangar Pact support, and I don't. I just got Flashed. You guys experiencing this?

Reel Context

I'm in black defending .Opponent AI common player striker got stats buffed: full fitness + 100 CON. I didn't foresee he can move like a cheetah.

Explanation

  1. That Jockey Defense Sprint activated
  2. Speed boost (flash speed type)
  3. Bonus auto jab tackle (due to high CON can zig zag)

Current AI Overall (Non Rigged)

  1. Full fitness and CON and PASS boosted.
  2. Can trigger defensive speed boost ALL the time.
  3. Zero Delay on player switching.
  4. AI can do automated low block.

Current Users Getting Nerfed (All of Us)

  1. Speed debuffed on first 3 touch of ball.
  2. Especially noticeable when you catch ball facing own goal, and proceed to body turn 180° to face opponent goal.
  3. Instead of one 180° twist stride like Antony from MU, all our full fitness and CON above 90 strikers, are automated to do awkward "3 slow mo close control strides".
  4. While opponent is coming to close us down with flash buff and free jab tackle. If he failed, he still has automated low block run / tackle. Zzz.
  5. If you don't experience this, it's okay. You can't detect 0.5 - 1 second movements. Or you not using momentum in your joystick movements. Or you getting ghost update late.

Verdict

David vs Goliath. I can win in hard mode scenario. Problem is all my league games are like that now. It was bearable regardless of how AI is buffed, we can always counter and recounter them after adjusting. But the nerf on users' players. That's dirty af.

2024.05.17 05:37 Royal_Isopod_104 Recommendations for knives / set for wedding registry

Hi, I'm trying to put together a wedding registry for my upcoming wedding. I've been doing some research into knives and feel a bit lost with the amount of options. Both my fiancée and I are casual home cooks. I don't have a favorite grip style so I don't factor that in too much.
I'm mainly looking for 5 items. A chiefs knife (probably 7 to 8 inches), utility / petty knife, bread / serrated knife, some kitchen shears, and a block to store them in. I may want to get a honing rod not sure yet. Just a clarification, I am not looking for the greatest knives that will last me a lifetime, but at the same time something at least a step up from generic ones. I probably want to spend around $200-$300, but no more than $400 since there are other things I'd like to prioritize on the registry currently and can always add upgrades over time. I'm open to other knives / items to add besides the 5 I named, but they would need to be for some reason and would not push the budget past 400$
From what I have seen knife sets are not recommended and I generally agree, but am still not opposed if it fits my needs.
I think I prefer western handles as opposed to Japanese, but have never used a Japanese handle so still open to them.
Knives / Items I Am Looking For:
Knives / Items I Am Not Looking For:
In defense of knife sets for my situation: Since I am looking for the pretty standard knife set and block this may be the best bang for buck option. Once again not a fan of the handles, but something like this VNox set has the things I'm looking for (besides the paring knife). And some already come with the block such as this and this although they are out of my budget.
If you made it this far thanks for reading! I am open to any advice. Also if any of my statements are wrong feel free to correct me or if any of my assumptions aren't realistic. I did most of my research from this subreddit and others. America's Test Kitchen, Cult Flav, random youtube videos on knives, and articles.

2024.05.17 04:14 adorabletapeworm Orion Pest Control: Don't Ask To Speak To My Manager

Previous case
We're back to business as usual at Orion. Sort of. I'll get into that in a minute. But first, I just need to put it out there that sometimes the clients drive me nuts. As much as I have an apparently irresistible desire to help everyone, some people really push it. Push it right off of a fucking cliff, that is.
I’m going to stop myself before I go off on an unhinged rant about the woes of dealing with the public. Instead, I’ll let yinz see for yourselves what I've been putting up with.
(If you're not familiar with what Orion Pest Control's services are, it may help to start here.)
We received a call from a client about mosquitoes running amok in her home. Since we had a few others to take care of that day, I informed her that the earliest that one of us could investigate the matter was in the afternoon. But because this woman is clearly so much more important than everyone else, her royal highness threw a hissy fit about having to wait like a common peasant.
I tried to be as nice as possible, “Ma’am, I understand that it’s frustrating, but there are others that called ahead of you, so we have to take care of their problems before we can take care of yours.”
The client huffed, “Okay, you clearly aren’t hearing me. There are mosquitoes in my house!
“Yes, ma’am, I heard you. However, you are not our only client, so we ask that you please be patient and we will be there as soon as we can.”
I should also mention that this client talked out of the back of her nose, if that helps to paint a picture of how her cadence was equally as grating as her personality. “Okay, but do those people have mosquitoes? Like in their house, biting them and their kid over and over? My son could have Zika virus right now!”
Jesus Fucking Christ. I rubbed my temple with my free hand as I did my damndest to keep my customer service persona in place, “Again, ma’am, I understand that this is frustrating, but we have a wasp infestation and termites to deal with before you and those families want their kids to be safe, just like you. In the meantime, I recommend wearing bug spray or burning a citronella candle until we can get to you. We will be there as soon as we can.”
“You better be! And you really need to work on your customer service, sweetie!”
The client hung up on me.
I had to pace around the office after that one. Sweetie? Shove it up your ass, you entitled, snotty… You know what? Nevermind. I have many words to describe clients like that and none of them are pleasant. I hoped that she’d get mosquito bites in all of the most private areas of her anatomy.
It probably didn't help that I was saddled with some bitterness after the ‘dogging’ incident. I knew that there wasn't anything I could do about the mechanic other than stay out of his way going forward. And boy, did that eat me up.
On that note, I know what the mechanic is, however, even whispering the official title of these Neighbors is enough to draw them to you. I'm not sure if writing it counts and I'm not about to find that out the hard way.
Just know that if you hear wings beating from the west at night, hide and pray that you'll be passed by. Placing a line of salt on all of the doors and windows facing the west keeps them from coming inside. Once they set their sights on you, they'll never stop hunting you. Even death itself fears them. You'll still be running long after your heart stops beating.
But I promise, I’ll elaborate more on that later. I’m getting ahead of myself. Back to the case.
Reyna was at the point in her training where she could be trusted to deal with termites on her own. After I had the wasp nests taken care of, I set out to her royal highness’ home, and earlier than I’d told her, might I add. I will admit that I was tempted to dally a bit just to piss her off, but then I figured that it would be better and more professional to just get it over with.
She looked exactly like how I pictured her to look, complete with a weasley sneer that only the most unlikable of human beings are able to master.
“It’s about time.” She snapped.
I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. “Where have you noticed the mosquitoes the most?”
“Everywhere.” She said unhelpfully,
Her husband stepped in. “In the kitchen and basement, mostly.”
To make this call even better, the husband decided to take it upon himself to follow me around as I did my inspection, asking me pointless questions and giving me advice that I didn't ask for.
It got to a point where his hot breath wheezed into my ear as I shined my flashlight under their sink.
Stiffly, but politely, I asked, “Sir, can you please keep your distance?”
His wife chipped in, “Will you let her do her job, Curtis? It took her long enough to get here, and if you keep pestering her, it's going to take even longer!”
The husband puffed up and snapped, “Well, it's my house! I need to know that the person working in it knows what they're doing!”
They began screaming at each other. As obnoxious and uncomfortable as it was to have to bear witness to it, at least they weren't focused on me anymore. I shook my head and kept searching for the source of the infestation.
What I was looking for was standing water, which is essential for a mosquito's life cycle; you eliminate the standing water, you eliminate the infestation. The space beneath the sink was completely dry.
With the argument going on, I almost didn't hear it. An odd little sound. The easiest way to describe it was that it sounded like, ‘Kudo! Kudo!’
My head turned to follow it. That's when I noticed that one of the floorboards was slightly raised up from the rest.
I interrupted their marital problems, “You said that your son was sick earlier? Would he happen to have chills and a high fever?”
The client spat, “Yes, because some people-
Not in the mood for her nonsense anymore, I cut in, “Ma'am, please just answer the question. I am trying to help you, I really am, but I'm going to need some more information in order to do that.”
She looked taken aback, her face bright red. While she balked, her husband answered instead, “Our son said he was feeling under the weather, but he does that whenever he wants to get out of something. You know how kids are.”
Good lord. Parents of the year.
“Have you noticed your salt going missing?”
The wife blinked at me, “How did you know that?”
I told them that I'd be right back and went to retrieve a cage from the truck. This critter is an odd one in that not only is salt not a suitable repellent for it, but it actually loves the stuff. It can consume as much as ten grams of salt per day. So if you find that the salt in your home has gone missing, it could mean that a False Egg has made a nest.
I returned with the cage and advised the couple to either move into another room or wait outside. Would it surprise yinz when I say that they refused? Not in the mood to argue, I just shrugged. Okay. Suit yourselves.
I set the cage up next to the lifted floorboard, took my salt off of my toolbelt, and sprinkled some inside the cage. It would placate the False Egg once I got it inside.
Using my knife, I pried the floorboard up. From behind me, the husband began to protest, but his wife snapped at him to keep still.
Meanwhile, my eyes met the beady gaze of a False Egg from where it hid under their floorboard.
At first glance, it looks like a white chicken's egg. If consumed, it causes the host to lay more False Eggs. That's how it reproduces. The telltale signs that you're looking at a False Egg include two dark spots on the shell near the pointed top of the ovoid. Those are the eyes, which they can leave closed to camouflage themselves. You may also notice two small holes at the bottom of the shell, which is where its legs can retract in and out. Mosquitoes follow False Eggs wherever they nest, though it's unclear why.
Generally, they're more of an annoyance than anything. However, they can cause flu-like symptoms in those that they feel threatened by, so they do pose a slight danger to those with compromised immune systems.
To my surprise, the False Egg leapt out of its nest and into the cage, tucking its legs back into its shell comfortably. Even though it didn't seem to have any intentions of moving, I quickly shut the door of its cage.
For the first time since I arrived, the clients were speechless. The woman had a hand over her open mouth while the man stared at the False Egg in a mixture of horror and disgust.
It wasn't until I stood up with the cage that the man asked, “What the hell is that?”
“The source of the infestation.” I replied. “I’ll take this guy out to the truck. The mosquitoes should follow him, but just to be sure, I'm going to ask that you all leave the house for a few hours so that I can apply a chemical treatment that'll kill off any stragglers. And your son’s condition should improve in a day or two.”
The couple didn't give me any trouble. They quietly collected their sick teenaged son, saying something about getting ice cream, then fucked off to do whatever while I dealt with the rest of the mosquitoes.
Once I was done, I drove off to release the False Egg somewhere where it could complete its life cycle away from humans. It is able to reproduce in any mammal. While forcing other organisms to lay eggs is bizarre and can be alarming for the affected individual, it doesn't appear to hurt the hosts, other than causing some mild abdominal discomfort. Once the False Egg is laid, the host goes back to normal, which is why we generally don't feel the need to kill them.
Unexpectedly, the False Egg talked to me.
It had a small, soft, mousy voice. “Thanks for getting me out of there.”
I glanced at the False Egg. I had its cage on the passenger's seat. Its eyes were visible, along with its little white legs as it sat on the bottom of its cage. It looked up at me as it wiggled its small feet absent-mindedly.
Whenever it spoke, a small crack that resembled a toothy mouth appeared in its shell. That was something to add to our records: not only are False Eggs capable of speech, but their mouths are located below their eye spots.
Stunned, I said, “You're welcome.”
The False Egg continued, “Oh, those humans are vile! I hadn't realized it when I first made my nest. Do you want to know why I made the boy sick?”
“Why?”
So that's how I learned every aspect of this family's lives. I'm sure yinz care even less than I do about some suburbanites’ interfamily drama, so I'll just say that it wasn't bad enough to warrant a call to social services, but enough that I can see why that kid probably couldn't wait to turn 18. Overbearing mother, father trying to use his son to relive his glory days as a high school athlete. The False Egg had done the boy a solid, giving him just enough of a fever to excuse him from lacrosse tryouts.
“Where are we going?” The False Egg asked after telling me all that information that I didn't know what to do with.
“Back to the forest.”
The False Egg kept swinging its little feet, “Can you take me somewhere nice? If it's not any trouble?”
Why not? Maybe some scenery would improve my mood.
So me and my little egg buddy took a little drive to the pond. It was a picturesque area as well as a nice environment for a False Egg. They prefer caves, but as long as they're near water, they'll be fine. When I opened its cage, the False Egg hopped out, its little eyes and shelled body swiveling to take in the peaceful sight.
“Oh, this is wonderful! Thank you!” Before it skipped off, it paused. “I think it would only be right if I told you something that could help, since you brought me here.”
It turned, its shell splitting to form a mouth as it hesitated before speaking, “If you hear whispers in the woods, even if it sounds like someone you care about, don't listen. The louder they are, the safer you are. They get quieter as they get closer to confuse you.”
Hold on. That didn't make any sense. The whispers had gotten louder and more urgent as I approached the mechanic's clearing.
Unless I was wrong and he wasn't the one doing it.
I asked, “Is the whispering thing disguising itself as a mechanic?”
The False Egg tilted to the side thoughtfully, “I'm afraid not. It doesn’t like to pretend to be human.”
So there was something else out there with me when I went looking for Victor. I remembered then that the whispers had stopped once I got close to the mechanic's clearing. When I unintentionally allowed them to lead me astray, they took me in the opposite direction of where he'd been waiting. Interesting.
With the False Egg wandering off to establish a new nest that was far away from humans, I headed back to the office, unsure of how to feel about the information it had given me.
Victor looked annoyed when I came in. The clients had called to complain about my ‘poor customer service.’ Wow. Okay.
“Next time, just leave the False Egg there.” Victor said, rubbing the bridge of his nose. “They want to complain about poor customer service? We can show them bad service!”
“It's fine, Vic.” I replied. “Just let them leave their one star Google review and move on.”
“These fucking people…” He grumbled.
Victor's headspace hasn't been much better than mine. He's been pretty much stuck waiting by the phone for those ominous calls that the mechanic mentioned in the woods. They don't happen often, but when they do, he gets grim. Quiet. He hasn't told me in detail what has been requested of him. I don't know if he simply doesn't want to talk about it or if he's sworn to secrecy.
We'd had a long, uncomfortable talk during one of my days off while recovering from getting dogged. Victor stopped by with coffee and a box of donut holes. He drank the coffee, but left the donut holes untouched. We sat in my small kitchen, him staring intently into his black coffee, me quietly adding more sugar to my mocha.
I broke the silence. “What did you want me to see the other day?”
“I couldn't outright tell anyone that I was dead. Not without the mechanic finding out.” He continued after some hesitation. “It feels selfish saying it now, but… I just wanted someone to know what happened to me.”
Victor pulled the bandana aside with a finger, revealing that a jagged, red grin had been carved across his throat. I shuddered, being forcefully reminded once again how thin skin truly is.
He quickly pulled it back into place.
That prompted me to ask, “Is the mechanic the one that…?” I pointed to my neck.
Victor shook his head. I asked him who did.
His expression darkened, “Someone I used to use with. He didn't believe me when I told him that I was still clean and couldn't help him get his next hit. Everything happened so fast after that. Before I knew it, I woke up in his trunk. My chest felt empty. It's strange, you know? You don't notice your own heartbeat until it's not there anymore.”
I shook my head slowly, a knot in my stomach as I whispered, “Jesus, Vic. Where is he now?”
“He can't hurt anyone else. We'll leave it at that.” Victor muttered.
I took in a shaky breath. I couldn't believe that he'd been keeping all of this in. It was a lot to take in at once, so I could only imagine how much worse it was to be the one experiencing it.
Like I said, I don't blame him for what happened. He must've felt so alone.
After I regained my composure, I asked, “So… what does the mechanic have to do with this?”
Victor hesitated again, eventually saying, “He couldn't touch me while I was alive, so he made sure that death couldn’t get to me before he could. That's why I was trying to keep my condition quiet; I was hoping that I could outlast him long enough for the Reaper to catch up. Unfortunately, the fucker is good at what he does and knew that I’d drag someone else into my bullshit eventually.”
I shook my head, “I dragged myself into it. I could've just minded my own business, but I didn't. I chose to go out there, even though I didn't know what I was dealing with. And I chose to say the wrong thing to the mechanic to set him off.”
“You wouldn't have been in that position if I hadn't said anything.”
“So what happens now? You're just… forced to do these calls?”
Victor sighed, “It's either that, or I join the ones in the trees.”
The skulls. Grimly, I wondered if those trapped souls were still aware. If they knew what had happened to them.
I slumped down in my seat. “Is there anything we can do?”
“As of right now, no. We just go to work, keep our heads down, do what we have to do. And from now on, I'll deal with the mechanic, even if it's for something as trivial as changing a tire. He's my problem, no one else's.”
So that's where we're at. Victor's technically not alive or dead, but a secret third, worse thing.
Speaking of worse things, we got an emergency call in the middle of the night.
After we close for the day, Victor routes calls to his phone in case there is something that can't wait until the next day. Thankfully, this is an extremely rare occurrence; up until this incident, it's only happened twice since I've been with Orion. I joined Victor for one of those two emergency calls. Even though it's been two years since that night, I still hear the crunching of bones in my dreams.
Something yinz need to know about the farmers around here is that they know how to take care of themselves. They have more encounters with the atypical than anyone else and for the most part, they know how to live amongst things like the Neighbors in relative peace. They know about leaving cream out to appease them. They know about what measures to take to defend themselves and their animals. They're a tough bunch and they usually prefer to take care of things themselves. It's highly unusual for them to reach out to us.
So when Victor told me over the phone that the emergency call was at one of the farms, I knew it was going to be bad.
When he first described what the farmers were contending with, my stomach dropped. The client's brother was found on the porch with his chest entirely deflated, deliberately placed into a chair that was moved in front of the door where the family could see him.
The farmers were holed up in their home. The woman of the house was pregnant, due within the next few days, which made moving her extremely difficult. They could hear whatever killed the brother giggling and tapping on the windows, mocking them. Victor was already on his way there.
I arrived with my toolbelt along with a shotgun and shells filled with rock salt. This may sound ridiculous, but I also donned a collar that I'd made last summer by hammering long ass carpenter nails into the leather, then coating their pointed tips with silver. I looked a bit like a goth club reject, but when dealing with things that like to go for the throat, you gotta put your pride aside.
Victor's truck was in the driveway, but he was nowhere in sight. Shotgun at the ready, I glanced around as I approached the house. The body was still on the porch, untouched after the poor man had been posed there. It looked far worse than what Victor had described. His chest had caved in, like everything inside of him had been sucked clean out. His face was frozen in surprise rather than horror or pain. He'd been caught off guard and was dead long before he could react.
Wings. I turned, pulling the trigger just in time as the pest tormenting this family dove at me. It tumbled to the ground with an enraged shriek.
It appeared to be a woman. Well… half of one. Her legs were gone, brown entrails dangling sickeningly from her gray torso. Her leathery, hooked wings trembled as she used her bony arms to raise herself up to snarl at me, curling her lips to reveal doglike fangs. I shot at her again. She jolted as the shell took a chunk out of her skull.
That wouldn't kill her. Both her and I knew it. She skittered like a cockroach, an elongated tongue shooting out of her mouth, quick as a whip. I flinched, turning my head so she couldn't reach my face, grateful for the collar as I felt the proboscis slam into its spikes. The impact knocked me off balance, causing me to stumble. I leaned into it, hitting the ground and out of reach of the next swipe of her tongue.
I took aim again, knocking her back a few feet. A dark shape suddenly appeared from the barn, a glint of metal shining in the figure’s hand. Victor.
“I can't find the lower half.” He hissed when I was in earshot.
That meant we were going to have to keep her from rejoining the lower half of her body until sunrise. It was three in the morning.
Because nothing can ever be easy.
Victor had found chains and a padlock in the barn. They should be heavy enough to restrain her. We’d just have to get close. Without her sucking our insides out, preferably.
She was back in the air. I took another shot. I'd have to reload soon. I hoped that I'd have enough shells to last the next two hours. At the rate I was going, I'd burn through them in the next ten minutes.
Unfortunately, I missed as she soared towards the house. I used my last shot and thankfully knocked her out of the air. As I hurriedly reloaded, Victor rushed towards the fallen creature, kneeling on her chest to keep her from taking off again as he fought to get the chain around her.
I heard him make a terrible choking sound, followed by her retching. She'd gotten her proboscis down his throat, but had withdrawn it even quicker than she had gotten it down. I guess undead viscera doesn't taste very good.
As she gagged, Victor pressed his forearm against her throat, pinning her so that she couldn't sink her fangs into him. I raced over, setting the shotgun on the ground next to me so that I could help him restrain her. While he held her, I coiled the chain around her squirming torso.
She began to laugh. When she spoke, it sounded like an old woman and a young girl speaking in unison, “Do you think a chain will be enough to stop me?”
I kept going. She wiggled one wing out from beneath her, jabbing the hook into the hollow of my shoulder. I gasped as it pressed deeper into my skin. Victor roughly pushed her wing back down, the violent withdrawal of the hook making me see stars. Through all of that, I still kept going.
We turned her onto her side so that Victor could pin her wings against her back. She screeched the entire time, the proboscis shooting back to slap him in the cheek.
We almost had her. Then we heard a wail from inside the house. What now?!
The pest abruptly paused in her struggles to leer at us, then she sang, “The baby's coming!”
You've got to be kidding me.
Her fighting resumed with far more force than before. That man that she'd killed had merely been an appetizer for her. The baby was her true prize. Her eyes were wild with excitement, saliva dripping off of her fangs as she watched the front door open.
Shitshitshit!
“Go back inside!” Victor shouted as we both used all that we had to try to keep the pest in place.
The farmer yelled back, distress making his voice higher, “Something's wrong! I have to get her to the hospital!”
I risked a glance. The woman was white as a sheet, holding onto her husband for dear life as he half led half dragged her to his truck. Blood stained the inside of the woman's legs.
At the sight of it, Victor froze. I didn't like the way he looked at the woman then. Oh no. The creature went into a complete frenzy. She managed to get her fangs into Victor's arm, wrenching a cry of agony from him as she ripped a sizable chunk of flesh out. His hold on her loosened just enough that she could wriggle a wing out.
I screamed as I felt her beginning to slip away, frantically reaching for the nearest part of her, which was unfortunately her dangling intestines. It was like trying to hold onto oversized wet noodles, my hands slipping in her chunky blood as I struggled to slow her down.
They just needed to reach the truck. We just had to keep her here just long enough for them to get a head start.
I just hoped that I wouldn't end up having to protect them from my boss, too.
She roared as she turned and slashed me across the brow with one of her clawed fingers. My vision went dark in my right eye. Numbly, I wondered if she ripped my eye out, or if it was just from the pain. By some miracle, I didn't let go.
Fortunately, the bite seemed to snap Victor out of whatever had happened to him when he saw the woman’s blood. At least for the moment. He scrambled across the ground, seizing my shotgun. His first shot missed. The second one hit her left wing. The farmer had the truck's passenger side door open as he helped his wife inside. The pest reached a talon towards them, trying to drag herself closer. Victor was back on his feet and marched over to shoot her in the head. Once. Twice.
The truck's engine roared to life. With it, the pest screeched in rage, the sound warped by the damage done to her mouth after Victor had unloaded on her. She flailed as she watched her prize speed down the road.
But it wasn't over. The gunshot wound in her wing was already closing up. It wouldn't take her long to catch up to them if we lost her.
My cheek was wet. Turns out, I didn't lose an eye. I just had blood in it. Thank God. I crawled over her, trying the chains again as Victor went back to holding her wings against her body.
She called him every foul name in the book, words slurring from her destroyed jaw. One of them touched a nerve: “Bitch of the Wild Hunt.” He wordlessly snatched the salt from my belt and poured it over her face, holding her jaw to shove the container into her mouth. She gurgled and started to convulse as the salt was forced down her throat. That shut her up.
With the chain pinning her arms and wings against her body, Victor dug the padlock out of his pocket, using it to secure the links.
“I’m going to try to get her to the barn.” He yelled over the sound of her agitated howls.
I retrieved the shotgun and followed him as he carried the squirming, shrieking pest towards the barn. I pressed the palm of my hand to the cut on my brow. A flutter of unease went through my gut as it occurred to me that I could be in danger from Victor as well.
It didn't help that the pest had noticed it, too. She was goading him, “That girl smells sweet, doesn't she?”
“You want more salt in your mouth?” He threatened flatly. “We got plenty and we have some time until sunrise.”
She cackled, “You can't tell me that your mouth isn't watering thinking of her soft flesh between your teeth. Her blood warming your tongue. You long to feel warm again, don't you, dead man?”
The borderline pornographic way that she spoke about devouring me made me intensely uncomfortable.
“Keep it up and I'll pack the salt up your nose, too.” Victor retorted.
Once we got to the barn, we found an empty stall, which he tossed her into. I didn't follow him into the stall. My gut was telling me that something was off.
He drew a circle of salt around her. As long as it wasn't broken, it would trap her until sunrise.
I didn't think the boss would ever intentionally hurt me. But the way he looked at that woman…
What if he couldn't control himself?
Victor shut the stall door behind him, leaving the pest to wail and swear at us from her prison.
His eyes went to my forehead, “That looks like it hurts.”
I swallowed back the lump in my throat. There it was again. That look.
“Stay back, Vic.” I said calmly, my unease growing.
He took a deep breath, his eyes closing. I took a small step away from him, towards the exit to the barn.
I kept my voice even, “Vic, be honest with me. Is it safe to be around you right now?”
Victor stayed where he was, still not looking at me. He eventually answered, “Probably not.”
I took another step towards the door. “I'm going to leave.”
He nodded, eyes still shut, “I think that would be best. I'll make sure that she stays in the stall.”
As I backed towards the door, afraid to turn my back on him, I said, “I'll uh… see you at work tomorrow.”
“Yeah. See ya.”
I didn't dare turn my back on him until I'd left the barn. He didn't move a muscle the entire time. As I made my way back to my G6, I kept looking over my shoulder. Victor didn't follow me. I made it back to my car without incident.
I thought back to when I'd found him in the butcher shed. Looking back, I'm pretty sure that he'd been eating it.
Once I was in my apartment, I quickly drew lines of salt in front of all my doors and windows. It made me feel somewhat safer. I inspected the injuries on my forehead and shoulder. After cleaning them both up, I determined that I should probably see a doctor in the morning. In the meantime, I covered them both with gauze.
I painfully settled down onto my bed, my entire body aching. Even though I felt like a dish towel that had been wrung out over and over again, I knew that I wasn't going to be getting much sleep. My mind was racing too much.
Against my better judgment, I ended up texting Victor, ‘Are you a draugr?’
His response was, ‘i think so’
Draugr are known for their grotesque appetites. The joke Reyna and I had been making about him being a ‘high-functioning zombie’ wasn't all that far off, after all.
I reminded myself that Victor wasn't a complete monster. He'd at least had enough control over himself not to hurt me or either of the farmers. But the temptation had clearly been there. That begged the question of what his limits were.
Was it safe to work with him? Injuries aren't exactly uncommon at Orion. Maybe that's why he's been sending Reyna and I together for two person jobs rather than going on calls with us.
I received another message from him, ‘if you want to quit I understand’
I didn't, though. As stressful as working here can be, I do enjoy my job, weirdly enough. I've been treated better here than by any other employer and I like having only two other coworkers to worry about, especially since I get along well with both of them. But the biggest reason why quitting hasn't occurred to me is that I wouldn't be able to just walk away from all that I'd learned about the atypical cases. There was no way I could live a normal life after working at Orion.
I also wanted to keep an eye on Victor. Between whatever the mechanic was forcing him to do and his transformation, there was a lot that I was concerned about. As much as I didn't want to think about having to trap or kill Victor, if it came down to it... I'd do what needed to be done.
I sent back, ‘hazard pay? 👀’
His reply was, ‘😒’
A moment later, I received, ‘we'll discuss it when I don't have a manananggal mf'ing me’
Yinz see why I kept calling her a ‘pest’ rather than trying to type that long name out each time? I guarantee I would have misspelled it several different ways.
When the sun rose, I received another message from Victor, ‘it's over. thanks for your help’
We found out later in the afternoon that the hospital had been able to save the farmers’ baby. She was going to have to stay longer in the hospital, but otherwise, she and their newborn daughter were alright.
What was alarming was that the dead man's body had been desecrated at some point after I left. It was believed that the pest had been the one to take chunks out of his neck, shoulder, and chest. I wasn't going to be the one to tell the family the truth. They'd been through enough already without the news that the one they'd relied on for protection had gotten hungry.
I wondered if being exposed to so much blood had been the trigger. I suppose I should just be glad that Victor had eaten a man who was already dead instead of me or another living person.
Like I said, I'm going to have to keep an eye on him. In the meantime… maybe don't demand to speak to the manager.

2024.05.17 03:36 OiTheRolk Chapter 1: Void Contract

Jamison Silksong was sitting at his desk, working diligently on his invention. 'Twas a rather intricate machine, made of pebbles and Snail shells, powered by the mysterious energy of Silkmilk. He had been working on it for over six months, tinkering, designing and dreaming - and finally, he could feel it, he was oh so close to completion.
Suddenly, Hornet Spiderborn barged in, destroying the door with her needle in her usual grandeur. "Bad news, Jamie," she said, "they're on to us."
"You really have to stop doing this," Jamison answered without looking up, "that's the 9th door this week."
"You should be concerned," said Hornet, "do you know who's on to us?" said Hornet.
"Of course I do," Jamison replied, "the Void Contracts. Our eternal enemies. The very reason we started this grand project in the first place."
"OK well, we gotta go fast. If they find us, not only will they kill you but also you will die."
The Void Contracts were a mysterious populace, ruling from the shadow, binding all bugs they could with agreements they were forced to follow. Hornet didn't know how they did it; she didn't think it was magic, but whoever came in contact with the Void Contracts ended up serving, regardless of their will. Even Jamison had served them at a certain point; if not for Hornet's direct intervention, he would never have escaped.
Hornet sat down beside Silksong and stared at his face. He looked so handsome when he was concentrated. The wrinkles about his eyes were just prominent enough to give him an air of refinement, and his large glasses only enhanced the blueness of his eyes, making them more piercing, more intelligent.
As a weevil, Silksong was considered among the lowest in Pharloom's hierarchy. He had been scorned, ostracized, and ridiculed for his existence alone, told that he could never be anything more than a manual laborer - and a very sucky one at that. But he wasn't like that. Frail of frame, yet sturdy of mind, he found delight in analyzing, thinking, and discovering.
Hornet grabbed his hand, gently stopping the work.
"We really have to go, Jamie," she said, "they will be here any minute, and you know I can't protect you long."
"Nettie," replied Jamison, finally looking at her, "I feel like I'm so close to finally getting this darn contraption right. If I stop my concentration now, I might lose my train of thoughts. And who knows how long It'll take to get it back again?"
"It's a sacrifice we have to make," she told him, "your life is more important."
"Nothing is more important than taking these fiends down!"
"I know," Hornet crooned, "that's why you have to live."
Sighing, Jamison put his hands down. Once she decided on a course of action, there was no arguing. He really hated to interrupt his work right now. Curse the Void Contracts! They could have given him five more minutes.
He gathered his contraption and tools into his traveling bag, gently, meticulously, each item in its own spot. Hornet tugged at his arm to hurry him up, but this kind of thing necessitated close attention. "I'm going as fast as I can," he assured her. One last farewell glance at the contents of the bag, before he closed it at last.
A shadow loomed through the broken entrance. Hornet immediately grabbed her needle, and stood ready; the air in the room seemed to chill instantly. "They've come," She whispered.
The creature, not quite beetle, not quite spider, covered in Void though not made of it, towered over the two bugs. Its unnaturally even teeth were like a crescent moon, shining widely from above. Its extremities, six grounded and four in the air, spindled forth with venomous intent.
Hornet dashed forward with her resolute "Shaw!". The creature swung at her, and she easily avoided it. Swing, jab - Hornet jumped and ducked, and with a powerful "Adidos!", delivered a slash that cut the Void Contract clear in half. It crumbled to the ground, leaving only a standing Hornet behind.
Another shadow obstructed the entrance; two more Contracts entered, grinning silently at the Spiderborn. Her heart sank; she knew these weren't the last of it.
"Escape through the back!" She called at Jamison, "I'll hold them off as long as I can!"
The weevil clutched his bag and ran, and stumbled as he reached the exit. As much as his heart raced for his spiderling's safety, he knew that the prerogative was to keep his work safe.
He bumped into something fuzzy. No, not fuzzy; it was Void, wisping and dripping off a thick carapace. His heart sank; he looked up; a pearl-white grin stared back at him.
Immediately he turned to run back inside, but the Contract pulled him back, causing him to drop his bag. "Nettie!" He yelled in desperation, "help!"
The creature picked him up. Try as he might, he couldn't struggle free. It showed him to its companions - some five, six more Void Contracts - and they clattered voicelessly among themselves.
"Nettie, they got me!" He yelled again, as the creatures scuttled off with him. As he was swung and tossed to and fro, he heard Hornet's desperate voice somewhere far behind.
"Release Silksong!" Her plea tore through the foggy air, "Release Silksong at once!"

The Story:
Keeping her store on Earth was supposed to keep her out of trouble, but when a human walks through her wards like they weren't there, Aloe finds herself with a mystery on her hands. Unfortunately for the human, her people love mysteries - and if she doesn't intervene, no one will. With old enemies sniffing around after her new charge, the clock is ticking to find their answers.
Hey, Miss Kanna.
Aloe showed me how to do this letterbox thing a little bit ago. Hopefully this gets to you. Otherwise, I mean, I guess you’ll never read this?
Rowen grimaced down at the page. Get to the point. Stop faffing about.
Anyway. We’ve been traveling, so I didn’t get a chance to write earlier. Thanks for all your help with the magic kit stuff, again. We still haven’t found an actual answer. We found out I can open the Heartgates, though. That seems pretty big. Just going to assume you know about all that stuff. Aloe doesn’t think it’ll be enough, but
He hesitated, pen hovering over the page. Was he just being naive? He didn’t doubt that Aloe was right, it just…seemed cruel. Surely the whole world couldn’t operate like that.
but I don’t know. It feels like it’d be pretty hard to wave something like that off? Are the Children of Ora or whatever really that single-minded about themselves?
We’re in Emerald Hills now, with that Lord Dilmat guy Aloe knows. If I can be honest a sec? I really don’t know how much I buy that he’ll help me. The lord guy seemed pretty disinterested once Aloe said he couldn’t keep me. Is staying here really a good idea? I do trust Aloe, but I don’t know. I don’t have that much time left. This feels like a gamble.
Not much time at all, now that they’d blown a few days traveling and getting set up. His all-too-short deadline was staring him down every time he closed his eyes. Could he really risk hanging around with some dude who visibly didn’t give even a single shit?
But what else could he do?
I guess it’s whatever, he wrote, shaking his head. I’m going to try and work the shop a little more. People here seem to speak English, but it’s not their go-to. It’s getting a little weird. They keep giving me looks. I need to find some sort of language textbook for Ereliit, but I’m a little worried. If there’s never been a human with magic before, you guys have probably never tried to teach a human before either. Right? So do I even have a chance in hell of learning? Would there even be anything in English?
He took a long, shaky breath. Just a worry. Do you have any ideas? I just don’t know what’s out there. But I’d like to try learning.
There. He’d talked about where they were, and he’d talked about Eswit, and he’d talked about his language battles. That just left…
His lips tightened. That just left the bit he really, really didn’t want to get into. But there was no getting around it.
I’m worried about Aloe. When we were heading into the Deeproads she started having this weird…attack. Glowy eyes, spouting nonsense, wouldn’t respond. She told me it’s because of her magic poisoning her, and she said it was a one-off thing from some kind of magic shock from coming back down here, but then it happened again last night.
She’s fine. I don’t mean to scare you or anything. She’s got that nightsbane stuff, and now that I know this is going to keep happening I can try and watch for it more. Or something like that. But she’s always a bit weird after she takes those potions. I just don’t really know what to do with all this. I just want someone else to know. Getting a little nervous.
Rowen took a shaky breath, closing his eyes for a moment. He hated tattling on her. If he was sick, the last thing he’d want was his friends spreading it around. But…someone needed to know. Someone that wasn’t him. What if last night happened again? What if she fell into another trance like at the aviary and he couldn’t wake her up?
No. Kanna needed to know.
The floor creaked overhead. “Rowen?” Aloe called. “Are you up?”
“I’m down here,” Rowen called back. Well. She was up early. The sky outside was still dark. He’d figured he had at least another half hour before she wandered out.
Quickly, he turned back to the paper laid out on the counter.
I’ve got to go. Aloe’s up and around, and I’ve got to get back to Emerald Hills for more testing. Lucky me. Fingers crossed they actually tell me something useful this time. It wouldn’t be down to luck. This time he’d make them listen. Thanks for listening, Kanna. Hopefully you actually get this.
He stood as the hallway above started to creak, hastily folding the letter up. She’d pointed everything out to him and run through a quick explanation. He just had to take this stamp, marked with a hastily-applied KANNA label, smack it onto the paper, and then put it in that wooden box. Close the lid, and-
Rowen jerked back as a flash of light erupted from beneath the so-recently-closed lid. Slowly he lifted the edge back up.
The box was empty.
“W-Well, that was easy,” Rowen said, grinning. Either the letter was on its way to Kanna, or he’d found a new handy-dandy trash can. All he could do was trust it was the former.
As he put the stamp back into the rack, though, his hand lingered on the wood.
He’d carried Aloe back to her room last night, was all. She’d been utterly passed out, and he wasn’t so frigid as to leave her out in the cold by herself. He’d felt weird about barging into her room unasked, yeah, but…well, he just hadn’t been able to come up with an alternative. She certainly wasn’t about to wake up.
Her bed had been rock-hard. He could remember it clearly, like someone had taken wooden planks and covered them in a few layers of comforter. He’d almost felt bad putting her down on it and walking away. Even the thought of it gave him a sore back.
As he’d turned, he’d caught a glimpse of a writing desk in her otherwise-barren room. There’d been a violin on it. And…a stamp, just like this. There hadn’t been a handy English label, so…he didn’t have a clue who it’d send a letter to. But there alongside it had been a pile of crumpled-up letters.
Someone Aloe wanted to write to, then—but couldn’t? But who? It would’ve been absurdly rude to pry further, so he’d just…walked away.
And now he found himself oddly curious.
The stairs creaked. Rowen glanced up, then gave a quick wave when he saw Aloe descending. “Morning. You’re up early.”
“Couldn’t sleep for shit,” Aloe mumbled. “Are you off?”
“Yeah.” Rowen grimaced. “Eswit wants me back bright and early. I’ve got to keep him happy for now.”
“Good kid.” Aloe gave him a quick smile, patting his shoulder as she passed. “Just stick with it. We’ll figure this out, I promise.”
He was sure she wanted them to figure this out. She might even believe that they’d do it. But belief in a thing didn’t make it reality. He needed to keep pushing. This was no time to sit back and take things easy. He smiled back, nodding, and stood. “I’m off, then.”
“Be safe,” Aloe murmured as he strode by.
He just kept walking, head held as high as he could, until he was out of the Dragon and alone again.
—--------------------
Aloe turned on her heel, giving the floor a long look. The sun was up and Rowen was off. The scholars would be able to help him. The question was, how fast? Would they be able to make a breakthrough soon?
She tried to keep her mind from scrolling through the calendar left to them. It wasn’t enough for them to solve Rowen’s mystery by the deadline—if they didn’t get back to Windscour in time to declare their progress to Envoy Jaian, she’d run a real risk of getting herself in trouble with the crown. She could defend herself, but…she didn’t want to give them any excuse to declare the deal null and void.
Which meant she really, really needed Eswit to get to work, fast.
Sighing, she straightened. A trilling whistle slipped from her lips. All around the Dragon, candles ignited, turning the morning glow into a comfortable brightness. The shutters on the front windows flew open, and through them, she saw the sign out front drop into place.
Well, they were open for business. Overhead, the sunbirds raised their heads, starting to trill amongst themselves.
“Don’t make yourselves trouble,” she said, giving the big guy at the group’s center a warning look and a pointed finger.
He only chirped at her, hopping to the side. She heard one of the eaves windows creak open, followed by the flapping of wings. Several of the others followed suit, vanishing into the outside world.
“Fine,” Aloe muttered, shaking her head. “Come back in time for dinner or you’re not getting any.” It didn’t worry her too much. Most of the dens had access to an exit if they wanted it, and all of them knew the signal for when she was packing up. There shouldn’t be too much danger toward them in a deeproads town like this.
She was just reaching her chair behind the counter when the door swung open again. “Forget something?” she said, turning back.
Her eyes widened at the sight of a woman striding through, short and sturdy with thick, curly red hair and a wide-brimmed hat whose colors had been bleached with too many hours in the sunlight. Pouches ringed the belt on her waist, hanging down almost to her knees.
“Pardon me,” the new woman said, her voice gruff. “Had a lad all but pounding down my door ‘bout some new shop in town.” She leaned her head back, fixing a look on Aloe from beneath the brim of her hat, and grinned. “Thinkin’ it’s ‘round the time I should see the place for myself.”
Just as she’d thought, then—this was Lanioch’s apothecary. Exactly the sort who might be interested in the goods she sold. Aloe smiled right back, bowing with careful, deliberate respect.
“Madam Healer, I believe I have exactly what you need,” she said. “Whatever that is.”
“We’ll see about that,” the apothecary said, turning toward the Dragon’s shelves with a brisk step.
Aloe’s grin only widened. She wasn’t put off by the woman’s air and attitude, no. She’d expected this. The bargaining was the best part—and out of everyone in the town, this was likely to be her primary customer.
The game had just begun.
—--------------------
It was early enough in the morning for there to still be dew on the grass when he crossed over into Emerald Hills, but the lab was already bustling. The secretary Aloe had talked to before perked up at the sight of him, beckoning him over. She didn’t try to speak to him, though. Maybe she was too busy. Maybe he was just the human and didn’t rate a little morning chitchat. Hell, maybe she didn’t even speak English.
He let her usher him into the same lab room he’d been in before. It was just like he remembered it—but this time, there’d been a huge magic circle like something out of Fullmetal Alchemist scrawled all over the floor. There were tiny detailed elements throughout it that looked like someone had painted in with a tiny, hair-thin brush. “Paint, hopefully,” he whispered, giving the thing a contemplative tap with his foot as the secretary walked across the room atop it. If he messed up all their hard work they just might kill him after all.
The circle didn’t budge. With one last shrug, Rowen steeled himself and followed after.
Note-Taker and Box-Holder were there, he saw with a grimace. Both lit up at the sight of him—but as they hurried toward him, he saw Note-Taker pull something from his pocket. A vial, filled with clear liquid.
“No,” Rowen said, taking a step back as the pair charged him. The rest of the researchers scattered around the lab looked up at the firmness in his voice, but he refused to let himself back down. “I’m not going to drug myself. It’s not necessary.”
“You must hold still,” Note-Taker said. “It will…” He scowled, chewing on his lips. “Difficult,” he said at last—and held the vial out again. “Take.”
“I’ll hold still,” Rowen said, shoving his hands resolutely in the pockets of his jeans. God, he felt out of place here dressed like a normal person when they were all wearing their fantasy getups. “I’m not taking it.”
Note-Taker grimaced. He glanced to Box-holder, who shrugged.
Rowen stiffened as the two started talking in Ereliit. “And you can’t keep everything secret from me this time,” he said. “You have to tell me what you’re figuring out about me. That was the deal.”
The two erelin men looked back to him, and now the disdain in Note-Taker’s expression was clear. “No time,” he said. “We will handle. Sit.”
“Yes, there damn well is time,” Rowen snapped. “Look, you’ve got two choices here. You can either tell me what you’re learning or I’m not going to cooperate. Okay?”
He watched Note-Taker’s nostrils flare. The man was positively glaring down the length of his nose at Rowen now. “You are not-”
“We had a deal,” Rowen said. “With your boss. D’you think that Lord Eswit guy is going to like it if you drive me and Aloe away?” He jerked his chin higher, matching the asshole glare for glare. “All I’m asking is for you to talk to me.”
Box-Holder muttered something under his breath, still in that stupid language of theirs. But before Rowen could launch into them again, Note-Taker let out a groan. “Agreed,” he said, sounding like he didn’t agree at all.
He’d at least said the word, though. And he did still need their help to get some answers. So Rowen just nodded, letting the two men guide him to the center of the magic circle, and steeled himself for what came next.
—--------------
By the end of it, Rowen understood why Note-Taker had wanted to drug him.
He didn’t have a clue what they were doing. He’d tried to watch and pay attention, but there was only so much he could do. He was plunked down cross-legged at the very center of the whole arrangement, with Eswit’s mages around the outer ring with their wands and staves. Every time they raised their implements, the circle under his ass started to glow with a frankly-worrying intensity.
And then the deluge would begin. Fireballs. Lightning bolts. Whirlwinds that whipped around him and blew his hair all astray. Bits of free energy, and shrieking rips of pure noise, and gouts of water that drenched his sweatshirt. He tried to stay still through all of it, gripping the insides of his sweatshirt pocket and closing his eyes against the worst of the onslaught. He’d promised Note-Taker he could manage.
But Christ it was hard. Sweat drenched his undershirt, and however strong his resolve had been at the start, he was mortified to find he was starting to shake a little.
All of the fear vanished when, with one last crackle of energy, the latest barrage faded—and the mages all turned away from him. “Is that it?” Rowen whispered.
Note-Taker was in the back of the room, scrawling away madly on a clipboard. The other mages were starting to encircle him, Rowen saw. And they looked excited. Bingo.
Legs still quivering beneath him, Rowen stood, banging his fists into his thighs until the tingling went away. “What is it? What did you find?”
The scholar closest to him glanced over, but turned back to the others just as quickly. None of the rest even bothered to look.
Note-Taker was beaming, though, and Box-Holder’s eyes damn near sparkled. Rowen’s anger deepened. They’d found something.
“Hey,” he snapped, striding closer. “What’d you-”
Note-Taker raised a hand, gesturing dismissively in his direction. A pair of the scholars turned, moving to block his way, but Rowen had expected that. Darting to the side, he ducked between a pair of Orran women—and snatched the clipboard out of Note-Taker’s hands.
You’d think the guy had never been bullied in school. He was slow to react, hands closing around open air for a second before he lunged. “Fucking-”
“Oh, so you do know some actual words,” Rowen said. He kept backstepping, circling the room until the exit was square behind him. “Look. You told me you’d talk. That’s all I want here.”
Note-Taker’s face contorted with anger. “Give it-”
“No,” Rowen said, holding the clipboard up and away from the Orran’s reach. “Just tell me what you guys found out, and I’ll give it back.”
“You’ll-”
Otherwise,” Rowen said, taking another step backward, “I’m going to take this back to Aloe to see what it says. And I won’t be coming back tomorrow.”
He waited, counting the seconds. The scholars had all frozen somewhere in the middle of his escapade, glancing at each other with worried eyes.
This was all a risk. He knew that. He needed these guys as much as they needed him—but maybe a little reminder that he could just pick up and go if they refused to play ball would do the trick. So he waited, eyes glued to Note-Taker’s face and nerves twitching for the slightest sign of counterattack.
Finally, the man scowled, letting out an irritated grunt. “Testing passive resonance,” he said gruffly.
“And?” Rowen said. “What’d you find?”
“Response value of five,” Note-Taker said. He spat the words out, then thrust his hand toward Rowen. “Give.”
“What’s that mean?” Rowen said. “Passive resonance. What is that? And what’s it mean that-”
“Did not promise tutoring,” the man hissed. He jabbed his hand forward again. “Give.
“Okay,” Rowen said. “Fine.” He’d gotten the important bits. Passive resonance, and it spat back a five. Passive resonance, five. Passive resonance, five. As long as he could get that back to Aloe, she’d be able to translate.
He slapped the clipboard down into Note-Taker’s outstretched hand. “Here. That’s all I wanted. Are we done for the day?”
The pair of head researchers glared at him, lips tight, but turned almost immediately back to their own work. One by one heads around the room swiveled away from him.
Guess that was his answer. Rowen shook his head, grumbling a little to himself, but made for the door.
Time to figure out what all the fuss was about.

I know many of you have played for a while now but as a newbie there is much to learn, especially when you’re almost 40 and trying to keep up with these murderers in Silo and Island. I appreciate feedback and I have thick skin so feel free to throw jabs in if I’m missing the point of the game.
