2024.05.19 04:10 SpeakeasyImprov The Suppressors

The Suppressors are a well-organized group made up of people who believe magic must be expunged from society. It is a coalition; its members range from religious fundamentalists to atheists and non-believers to otherwise average folk caught up in the panic. And in the organization are regular people in Suppressor t-shirts, soldiers in magic-nullifying armor, superhuman agents, and the elite individuals in the power structure.
And they’ve been gaining widespread support and traction, holding rallies and book burnings of occult texts. A few of their tactical squads have been harassing superheroes—which those heroes have tolerated because they can take care of themselves.
But now Suppressors have been brazenly attacking innocent people. Dragging tarot readers or psychic mediums out into the street and beating them in broad daylight. Smashing windows and firebombing curio shops. These villains include:
The Grand Suppressor is the apparent leader of the organization. He is Thomas Putnam Praetor, a businessman who noticed that being anti-magic is good for business. His media empire—books, podcasts, videos, local news affiliates—all air or publish anti-magic propaganda. Practicing magic is carefully framed as a moral failing, and some of his more out-there pieces of media paint a conspiracy of elites who breed or abduct children for magical sacrifices and dark rituals. Won’t someone think of the children?
Praeter is hoping to ride this wave of panic as a senatorial candidate, running on the claim that he will expose and destroy that magic conspiracy from the inside. But really, he’s just in it for the money.
The Convert is a high-ranking member of the Suppressors who is often trotted out as a success story. He was once a practicing wizard, they say, weaving dark spells for personal gain, until he saw the light and turned his life around. Secretly the Convert is really still using his magic for the benefit of the Suppressors… where do you think their anti-magic armor gets its power from? He has a host of broad magic powers, from energy blasts to flight to magic nullification.
Crucible hides a badly burned face and body under a suit of light armor. Claims to be a victim of magic himself, though he received his burns in an arson blaze of his own making. “Of course, magic made the fire go out of control,” he justified, “because I was burning down one of their precious cult temples…” Crucible fights hand-to-hand, wearing special gloves able to heat up to extreme temperatures, instantly igniting or melting anything they touch.
Red Martyr doesn’t talk much. Her silence has led many adherents to believe she is a human trafficking rescuer who died many years ago in a plane crash. Absolutely no evidence supports this theory; in fact Red Martyr seems too young to possibly be the same person. It is true though that she is hard to kill; if fatally injured she will eventually heal and resurrect. But the upper limit of her regenerative powers are unknown, and she tends to retreat when encountering a new, potentially deadly situation.
Some of the heroes targeted by the Suppressors are banding together to somehow stop these nefarious villains. But the more they fight, the more they find that the Grand Suppressor is not the leader they think he is, and the true leader has even deeper plans… the elimination of all magic save their own, making them the most powerful mystic in the world!

2024.05.19 02:07 CaptainRexBeard Future of Multiplayer Superhero Games

After the failures of Marvel’s Avengers, Gotham Knights, and Suicide Squad: KTJL, is there much hope for a gamer like me who wants a AAA superhero coop experience?
I know Marvel’s Overwatch clone is coming but it’s just been a bummer that after this era of superheroes that’s there is no solid entry out there.

2024.05.18 16:56 kenUdigitt Novel Chapter 414

Disclaimer: I do not speak Korean. This is purely translated by machine with a lot of cleanup afterward. With that in mind, I am open to criticism to improve these translations. Enjoy!

Chapter 414

Some faces are unwelcome no matter how often they appear. For me, Lee Jeong-Ryong and Wu Hei-Xing belonged squarely in that category.

Nevertheless, I initiated the conversation today because Wu Hei-Xing, against all odds, looked somewhat respectable.

"Look who's here. I thought I'd never see you again."

My lively greeting earned a venomous glare from the disheveled Wu Hei-Xing.

「Shut up.」

"Oh..."

「One more word, and I swear on my grandfather's honor, I'll tear you to pieces.」

Is he Kim Jong-Il or something? I'll never understand why these guys treat their deceased ancestors' honor like a credit card. [Note: Kim Jong-Il was the previous lead of North Korea from 1997 to 2011.]

Keeping a straight face, I questioned him.

"Did you have a bad relationship with your grandfather?"

「What?」

"I mean... Why stake his honor on something so impossible? It would make more sense if you were the one getting torn to pieces..."

「You bastard!」

As Wu Hei-Xing exploded with rage and rose to his feet, Lee Jeong-Ryong intervened with a raised hand.

"Enough."

「But Mr. Lee, this bastard...」

"Fighting amongst ourselves before a decisive battle is completely pointless. Calm down."

Crrrrick.

Wu Hei-Xing gritted his teeth, fixing me with a hostile stare.

「Understood. Since you say so, Mr. Lee, I'll stop here.」

"Good thinking."

Was he always this susceptible to persuasion? I glanced sideways at Lee Jeong-Ryong, noting the subtle smile playing on his lips.

Mr. Choi, who had accompanied me, seemed lost in thought.

"What about you, Jin Tae-Kyung?"

Turning away from Mr. Choi, I shrugged nonchalantly.

"I should listen to what my elders say."

"I didn't think you were one to care about such things."

"Shouldn't all young people respect their elders?"

Lee Jeong-Ryong laughed softly at my casual remark, while Wu Hei-Xing looked at me as though he wished me dead.

「Respecting your elders. Bullshit. What about me then, seven years your elder?」

"If you don’t want to write a will, try opening your mouth kindly first."

「This damn brat...」

"Don't be a dick."

Wu Hei-Xing, reignited with anger, fell silent.

I stared him down with icy eyes and continued.

"If you still have the energy to fuss over such pettiness, you should check on the friends you brought here."

「...!」

"These are people who risked their lives to come this far. They aren't disposable tools to be discarded after one use."

My disdain was palpable.

Around Wu Hei-Xing, the remaining Hunters were barely fifty in number.

According to what I’d learned from headquarters, they had started with five hundred. The majority had either perished or fallen behind.

"It's entirely possible that they were all casualties, especially in combat. But…"

Despite the bloodshed around him, his armor remained almost immaculate, suggesting he had engaged minimally, preserving himself while his comrades fell.

"Got anything to say, idiot?"

I remembered a line from a classic superhero movie I watched as a child.

With great power comes great responsibility. And that's not just for those bitten by radioactive spiders.

If you're someone who can conjure Aura Blades instead of spider webs, amassing wealth and honor while shielding your misdeeds, then at least acknowledge your basic duties.

"You might qualify as an S-rank, but you're no Hunter. So from now on, when introducing yourself, don't say 'Hunter.' Just go with 'the lucky S-rank, Wu Hei-Xing.' Got it?"

「……」

Wu Hei-Xing stood trembling, his fists clenched, as Lee Jeong-Ryong intervened.

"He did his best."

"Seeing his armor, I doubt that. It looks so clean, you could wipe it down and bring it to a thrift store."

"Wearing strong armor isn't grounds for criticism."

"I've noticed this before... You always seem to take his side. Does this bastard have something on you?"

"Everyone has something. I just happen to be good at hiding mine."

"You might want to run a check on your computer. Who knows, maybe the Chinese hackers are sharing images of the Vice Guild Leader watching porn in their group chats."

"I’ll be cautious."

A formidable opponent indeed.

Unfazed, Lee Jeong-Ryong offered a slight smile, but the man behind him told a different story.

I gestured dismissively at the man radiating a subtle, murderous intent.

"Look who it is, Team Leader Seok. Isn't that our Go-Jun?"

Lee Jeong-Ryong’s head of security and a devoted disciple.

I recalled thrashing him soundly before his departure to China, yet now, he appeared not only unmarked but even more formidable.

His gaze alone, deeper and more intense, was a testament to his vastly improved skills.

'He's also grown more patient.'

Seok Go-Jun ranks among Lee Jeong-Ryong's most loyal followers.

Previously, he would have lunged at me without a second thought. Now, even brimming with murderous intent, he opted for restraint over drawing his weapon.

Lee Jeong-Ryong seemed proud of his disciple and announced,

"We've now reached just 20 kilometers from the Arch Lich, according to the coordinates."

I ran my hands through my sticky, blood-smeared hair.

"It’s going to be the longest and most intense 20 kilometers on Earth."

"That's right. The Arch Lich has kept a substantial force in reserve."

"How many?"

"An estimated fifty thousand."

At that, a wave of despair swept through the suicide squad listening intently to our conversation.

Combined, the forces under myself, Lee Jeong-Ryong, and Wu Hei-Xing numbered barely five hundred.

Even a rough estimate made the prospect of breaching an army a hundred times our size to reach the Arch Lich seem daunting, filling them with a profound dread.

It was likely this overwhelming fear that prompted someone to cry out,

「We need to retreat, now!」

Soon, the dam of restraint broke and other Hunters joined in.

「Fuck!」

「There are too many monsters!」

「We’ll be annihilated if it continues like this.」

「I came here to defeat the Arch Lich, not to die a dog’s death!」

The two hundred or so members of the Western Front's suicide squad, who had suffered minimal losses thus far, were not immune to the spreading panic.

Yet amidst the rising fear, two figures remained composed.

Shao Shen, looking at me with unwavering trust, and then...

"There might be a possibility."

Going beyond mere trust in me, Mr. Choi, having analyzed the situation independently, spoke with measured calm.

"An estimated fifty thousand exceeds the General Headquarter's predictions by a significant margin."

「So naturally, we should retreat, shouldn’t we?」

At a member of the suicide squad's cry, Mr. Choi immediately shook his head.

"And the number of monsters we've faced so far is also fewer than expected."

「What?」

"While there were many, the forces we encountered on the front weren't as overwhelming as anticipated."

「Then...」

"Maybe the Arch Lich anticipated such a scenario. Instead of committing all its forces to the front, it might have held back fifty thousand troops as a final reserve to prepare for any situation."

The expressions of the Hunters hardened as they listened to Mr. Choi, not from understanding his point, but from the increasingly intense vibrations underfoot.

Creak, creak, creak.

The tremors, felt even tens of kilometers away, shook everyone to their core.

Destroyed roads stretched beside vast plains. Through the thick fog enveloping us, the combined roars and footsteps of tens of thousands of monsters echoed as a distant, unified clamor.

- Roarrrrrr!

「This is insane...」

「Run. We have to run. This is a fight we can't win.」

Feet shuffled and retreated in panic.

Yet standing resolute amid this chaos were the members of the Ares Guild, and Lee Jeong-Ryong, who, facing Mr. Choi, wore an intrigued expression.

"So?"

Their gazes met in the charged air. Mr. Choi's grip on the [Hero's Soul] tightened.

"Even though the General Headquarter's predictions were off, the fact that the Arch Lich hasn't launched a full offensive means that his reserve strength is still on the fronts."

"Yet, our forces are still outnumbered by the enemy."

"But aren’t there people assigned to this mission with this already in mind?"

Creak, creak, creak.

The roaring and ground-shaking grew more intense. Amid the anxious murmurs of the crowd, Mr. Choi's mana-imbued voice resonated with everyone.

"People capable of turning the tide in an instant. People known as S-rank Hunters, each one a one-man army."

At that moment.

Swoosh!

A dazzling burst of light erupted overhead.

With the brilliant illumination, the air itself seemed to cleave, as if cut by an immense blade. Three figures appeared, descending as though they were walking down invisible steps.

「My great-grandmother often sat me on her knee and told me. Royalty must fulfill the duties befitting their status. Commoners like you wouldn't understand.」

I chuckled and bowed slightly. Normally, he’s the last person I’d choose to align with, but this time, I couldn’t resist.

"Your Highness, Prince Felix."

「Hearing it from your lips is indeed pleasant, Jin. Hunter of the East.」

Prince Felix's haughty demeanor prompted the beauty next to him to click her tongue.

「Can't you do something about him? Maybe gag him?」

"It seems I might have to let it slide today, sister."

「Oh my.」

Fei Chen’s eyes widened at my reply and soon, she sported a bashful smile.

「That's good to hear. It feels right, doesn’t it?」

At Fei Chen’s remark, the last person in the group laughed heartily.

「Does this mean I can also expect something? What do you think, Jin?」

"Why, would you like me to kiss you?"

「Oh, not bad. But I must politely decline. I'm already married to my beloved Fred, and I have five adopted children.」

Swoosh. Thud.

Gliding through the air, Magic Johnson patted my shoulder with his enormous hand.

「Jin, you brave little guy. How on Earth did you do such a dangerous teleport? I nearly gave up several times this go around.」

"But you did it in the end, Johnson."

「The odds were different. This time, the chance of failure was only 10%. You're at least 80% braver than me.」

Courage isn’t measured by size. By simply daring to come here, risking death, they had proven themselves as some of the world’s finest Hunters.

And as they received unexpected reinforcements, the crowd’s eyes widened in disbelief.

「Fei Chen?」

「Prince Felix and Magic Johnson are here too!」

「S-rank Hunters! The S-rank Hunters have come to help us!」

「I love you, Johnson! Fucking nice gay!」 [Note: this is not a typo. This whole line is in English in the raw.]

But the excitement didn’t stop there.

Thump, thump, thump.

An unfamiliar type of vibration began, unlike anything previously felt.

It signaled the arrival of a vast army, now visible as a speck on the horizon.

「You thought we came here unprepared?」

Fei Chen continued with a sly grin, fueling the ongoing conversation.

「Combined, the Western and Eastern forces number ten thousand. That should buy you enough time to escape.」

A voice, filled with wonder, murmured aloud.

「Now we can live...」

In response, another voice cut through the air with firm resolve.

"No."

Mr. Choi raised the [Hero's Soul].

Even through the dense fog, the blade gleamed with a brilliant light.

"Now we can win."

I believe so too.

2024.05.18 10:28 K_808 Advice for making a "Justice league like" squad

I'm trying to build a DC alternate universe, but I'm struggling with the creation of a superhero group (that should be The Justice League of this universe) I don't know what Heroes should be in it what Heroes need to be in it?
My first idea was to include all the characters I already made (or just thinking to make) just like:
  1. a south italian batman (pastaman)
  2. a basic greek wonder woman (she has similar abilities to pastaman and she's weaker than him)
  3. a north Italian green lantern (green lasagna)
  4. male teenage Hawkgirl
  5. very super man called Superman
  6. gay Thanos
But I kinda don't like this combination of superheroes.
I seriously need some advice on what the team should be composed by, and maybe some ideas for some new version of already existing DC characters.

2024.05.15 15:52 NikolaiOlsen Here's a Pitch Meeting inspired post, If Ryan George ever was to make one

Producer: So, you have a video game for me?
Writer: Yes, sir, I do! It's a battle royale game called Fortnite.
Producer: Fork Knife? Is it a food-making game where you eat with a Fork and a Knife?
Writer: Well, No actually, sir, this is a shooter game where players are dropped onto an island where they must scavenge for weapons and resources inside people's homes while trying to be the last person standing.
Producer: Sounds a lot like that game PUBG.
Writer: Well, yes, it's Very similar to that.
Producer: So, Isn't that kind of a rip-off? Whats the point of making this game if its gonna be a Complete rip-off?
Writer: What if we give the player the ability to build stuff in the game?
Producer: Thats different enough. So how do we do the building in this Fork-knife game of yours?
Writer: Well, we add a building mechanic where players can gather materials and construct forts and other structures to defend themselves.
Producer: So, they can build in the middle of a fight?
Writer: They sure can!
Producer: Won't that make the combat complicated and kind of confusing?
Writer: Oh, definitely. Super confusing. And we're going to have this cartoony art style, so it's all bright and colorful.
Producer: Cartoony art style?
Writer: Yes, sir, we want to attract a younger audience, you know, kids and teenagers.
Producer: Really? And what about older players?
Writer: They'll probably play it too. Some might even play it so much while filming themselves sitting, eating, and drinking inside a room infront of a bunch of cameras to a bunch of digital people on some kind of streaming-platform out there. And some older players might even be so good that they can be placed inside a room with other players that are as good as them.
Producer: Okay, okay, But wait. Why would older players be interested in a game designed for kids?
Writer: Because it's free.
Producer: Oh, older people love free things.
Writer: And we’ll have these things called Emotes where players can dance and do fun gestures for no reason.
Producer: Why would they need that?
Writer: To taunt other players and express themselves, and making it easier for other players to get kills!
Producer: And we're sure kids will love this?
Writer: Oh, absolutely. They'll be flossing in no time.
Producer: What’s flossing?
Writer: It’s one of the dances that we’ll include in the game.
Producer: Ah, okay, and how will we make money?
Writer: Super easy, barely an inconvenience.
Producer: How come?
Writer: Microtransactions.
Producer: Microtransactions?
Writer*: Yeah, Microtransactions. Players can buy this thing called V-Bucks, which is our in-game currency, to get skins, emotes, and other cosmetic items.
Producer: So, none of these items give players a competitive advantage?
Writer: Nope, just cosmetics.
Producer: And people will spend real money on that?
Writer: Oh, they definitely will.
Producer: How are you so sure?
Writer: Because we’ll make it really cool and hard to resist. Plus, we'll create this thing called FOMO.
Producer: FOMO?
Writer: Fear of Missing Out. We’ll have limited-time items so players feel pressured to buy them before they're gone.
Producer: So, we’re going to exploit psychological weaknesses?
Writer: Oh, for sure.
Producer: Exploiting psychological weaknesses is tight! So, how will players get to the Island?
Writer: They’ll skydive from a flying bus.
Producer: A flying bus?
Writer: Yeah, we’ll call it the Battle Bus.
Producer: Why would a bus be flying?
Writer: Because it's fun.
Producer: But How does it fly tho?
Writer: Listen, sir, i'm gonna need you to get all the way off my back about why the Battle Bus can fly using a very big sketchy pop-able baloon but only moves one direction, okay.
Producer: Okay, let me get off of that thing.
Writer: Oh, and every few minutes, a storm will shrink the play area, forcing players into a smaller and smaller circle until one player remains.
Producer: Why would a storm do that?
Writer: To make the game faster and more intense.
Producer: But thats not--- never mind.
Writer: And we’ll have different game modes, including solo, duo, and squads, so players can team up with friends.
Producer: What if players don’t have friends?
Writer: Then they’ll be loners. Solo mode is perfect for that.
Producer: And how will we keep the game fresh?
Writer: We'll have seasonal updates with new themes, items, and challenges.
Producer: Seasonal updates?
Writer: Plus, we’ll add crossover events with popular franchises from all our child hoods we can think off.
Producer: Like what?
Writer: Well, i'm just gonna throw some names out there, just top of my head, *Marvel, Star Wars, DC, Avatar, Family Guy, TMNT, POTC, Rick and Morty, and a Whole bunch of other stuff.
Producer: So, we’re going to have superheroes and nerds fighting each other in a game where you can build forts and dance?
Writer: Exactly.
Producer: That sounds amazing!
Writer: Oh, it’s going to be super amazing.
Producer: And that's Fortnite. So, what do you think?
Writer: I think we’ll make billions.
Producer: We're gonna be rich!
Producer: Wow, wow, wow. Wow.
Producer: But wait, you forgot to say what’s the story behind this game?
Writer: Oh, right, well, the island is constantly changing and evolving. At first, there isn't much backstory, only younger and older players ACTIVELY hunting each other down and killing each other, but over time, we introduce a series of events and lore that shape the game's world.
Producer: Interesting. What kind of events and lore are we talking about?
Writer: Well, Each season, we add new story elements to the game. For example, there's this mysterious organization called "The Imagined Order" that's manipulating the island. Players uncover clues and secrets about them as the game progresses.
Producer: So, there are hidden stories and mysteries?
Writer: Exactly. One season, we had a massive meteor strike that changed the landscape. Another season, a giant iceberg crashed into the island, bringing new areas to explore. We also introduced a volcanic eruption that altered the terrain significantly.
Producer: Sounds like a lot of natural disasters.
Writer: Ye ye ye. But all these events tie into the overarching narrative. There's this powerful artifact called the Zero Point at the center of the island, and it's the source of all these changes.
Producer: What’s the Zero Point?
Writer: It's a mysterious energy source that can manipulate time and space. Different factions and characters try to control it, leading to conflicts and alliances.
Producer: Who are these characters?
Writer: We've introduced various characters over time, like Jonesy, who starts as a standard avatar but becomes central to the story. He’s sort of the player’s guide and gets involved in all the major events.
Producer: And these characters, they have backstories?
Writer: Yes, each character has their own backstory and motives. Some are heroes trying to save the island, others are villains seeking power. We add new characters regularly to keep things fresh and engaging.
Producer: How do players learn about all this?
Writer: Through in-game events, cutscenes, and quests. For instance, we might have a live event where something dramatic happens, like a giant robot fighting a monster. These events often change the map and advance the storyline.
Producer: Live events? How do those work?
Writer: At specific times, we host live events where players can participate or just watch something big unfold. These events are usually massive, with millions of players logging in to witness them.
Producer: That sounds like a logistical nightmare.
Writer: It can be, but it creates a shared experience that players love. It's a huge part of what keeps the community engaged.
Producer: So, the story is dynamic and ever-changing?
Writer: Exactly. We keep evolving the narrative with each season, adding new mysteries and plot twists. It's like an ongoing TV show where the players are part of the story.
Producer: And this keeps players coming back?
Writer: Absolutely. The evolving story and frequent updates make sure there's always something new to discover and experience.
Producer: Sounds like you’ve thought of everything.
Writer: We’ve tried to make it as immersive and engaging as possible. The story is just one part of what makes Fortnite a unique and exciting game.
Producer: Well, I’m sold. Let’s make this game!

2024.05.15 14:54 NikolaiOlsen Here's a Pitch Meeting thing if he ever made one for Fortnite

In Zooba: Fun Battle Royale Games, animals are let out of their cages and run around during a battle. Players must figure out how to get them back to where they came from, and you can choose your favorite character with special skills. With 45 allies, your battle will be more exciting and dramatic than ever.

HAVING ALL OF THE SPECIAL SKILLS OF THE LOVELY SUMMONED BEAST SQUAD

Zooba is an exciting royal battle that looks like a cartoon. Players change into 20 different characters to find out what their strengths and weaknesses are in battle. You can show how good you are at the game by using bombs, bows, arrows, or shooting missions. Also, as we move further into the ring, we bring different ways to play. Please remember how each type of animal moves so you can draw them more accurately. Bows are used for hunting orangutans and other slow-moving animals, like deer. Bigger animals like to use bombs because they work the fastest.

UNLOCK THOUSANDS OF THINGS TO CHANGE HOW THE SUMMONED BEAST LOOKS

How your summoned beasts learn new skills and get stronger in battle depends on how much money you can make. Food, tools, and clothes, among other useful things, are always being restocked at the store. Also, higher rounds let you play as the unbeatable superhero Shelly. For this, players need to be able to hunt and be good at it, as well as be able to trade coins. There are many new ideas in the new look that you can find out about. When you’re fighting alone, you’ll often have trouble with strong opponents, so that the support mascots will come in handy.

TRY TO WIN FIGHTS TO BECOME THE KING OF ALL SPECIES

Helped by a very professional and top-tier competition team, fight with Zooba to become the lord of all species. Get to the top of the leaderboard with an infinite food chain to get a lot of cool rewards. Every season, there are free tournaments that you must enter with enthusiasm. If a player makes it to the top of the tournament tables, they will get twice as many rewards. When things are bad, and a player is hurt, they must treat the wound as soon as possible so that the opponent doesn’t completely take over. Use a lot of cool emojis to get more deals with us. Hits in a row will give you coins and double your bonus points.

INVITE YOUR FRIENDS TO PLAY THE GAME WITH YOU TO GET THEIR HELP

For each group, the challenge comes with a long list of strict rules. Zooba lets players bring more friends into battle to help them. Please keep an eye on your opponent’s health pot so that you can shoot at the right time and don’t waste your time-fighting. The store has a lot of cool bows and arrows that shoot very badly and make the aerial bird hunt more fun and exciting. Each member of the battle squad is good at fighting differently, but Bruce is the best at taking down big beasts.

2024.05.13 21:42 ComicalOpinions Bigs And Tiny #2 comic review [SPOILERS]

Previously in Bigs and Tiny #1, readers encountered the beginnings of the world's unlikeliest superhero team when Santino and Bryan separately became the recipients of the Pieris Corporation's experimental drug to develop superpowered weapons. One becomes super strong, and the other could shrink from human-sized to as small as a mouse or any size in between. When both men ran afoul of Pieris's capture squads, the two joined forces to find out what was going on.
In Bigs and Tiny #2, the police discover Bryan and Santino's handiwork in Central Park - the Pieris goons dead and arranged in unflattering positions. The size of the slaughter and the puerile positions of the bodies lead Detectives Kelly and Silva to step up their efforts to find out what's happening.
Weeks later, board members from Pieris discuss their failed efforts to capture Bryan and Santino. Ms. Weaver assures the board that their missing subjects will be captured soon. She offers a demonstration by ordering one of her controlled subjects, Lt. Chalmers, to turn into living steel and smash the meeting table as a show of strength.
Days later, Bryan and Santino visit a flower shop tagged as the location of the next Pieris target in the data they stole in issue #1. They don't know why Pieris is targeting a woman named Karen who runs the shop, but they hope to reach her before Pieris does.
When the heroes reach the flower ship, they're too late. Pieris's goons have a hold on Karen. Bryan and Santino leap into action, expecting a fight as easy as the one in Central Park. Unfortunately, their fight gets a lot tougher when Lt. Chalmers arrives to fight with enhanced strength and steel skin.
However, Bryan and Santino quickly learn why Pieris is targeting Karen when she puts Lt. Chalmers on ice.

2024.05.12 21:25 tarvolon A Review of Girl Squad Volta (because M.L. Wang wrote a magical girl YA series)

This review can also be found on my blog.
I’m not anything approaching a connoisseur of magical girl fiction, but having immensely enjoyed both of M.L. Wang’s adult novels, I was a little bit curious about her series of snappy YA titles beginning with Girl Squad Volta. And when I heard a pretty compelling argument that magical girl stories are a type of superhero story—and indeed, the terms “superhero” and “superpowers” are used in Girl Squad Volta—one glance at the three empty squares on my second 2023 Bingo card was enough to buy a copy and give Maya Lin Wang’s young adult work a try.
Girl Squad Volta stars Wren, a middle school girl with a passion for art and a fair bit of martial arts training—only nothing like her best friend Laura, who dominates all the tournaments and seems to be drifting toward the more popular, athletic crowd as they look toward the beginning of high school. So when she meets a magical stranger that looks like something out of one of her superhero comics, trying to keep a villain from exploiting human girls with unnatural abilities, it’s obvious that Laura must be the target, and that Wren must work with the mysterious stranger to protect her.
If you’re at all familiar with the tropes, you can see where this is going. I’ve engaged with very little of the subgenre, and even I could see the twists coming a mile away. If you’re bothered by books that hew closely to the tropes, give this one a miss. But even when the shape of the plot is clear from the get-go, there’s still something to be said for an engrossing story, and Wang truly delivers on that score. Given how easily I immersed in her adult works, I wasn’t surprised to have a lot of fun with Girl Squad Volta, but she brought the story to life from the first martial arts tournament and didn’t let up from there, delivering a sympathetic portrait of an anxious teenager worried about losing her best friend to mundane distractions, and then escalating naturally to more magical obstacles.
To be fair, I really love stories about discovering hidden magic, so even if I was pretty far from the target audience, there was a lot here that was very much in my wheelhouse. I could see the twist coming from the first page, but that didn’t lessen my anticipation one whit for the inevitable revelation. Combine that with a compelling lead character and a snappy plot that brought the whole book in at under 200 pages, and Girl Squad Volta made for a quick and thoroughly entertaining read.
Can I nitpick it? Sure. As someone who lives with a couple elementary school kids, some of the flashback scenes didn’t come off quite true to the intended character ages. And there may be a little bit more explaining of the magic system that I personally prefer. To be honest, it’s probably not a series that I’ll continue, simply because I love the freshness of hidden worlds but care much less about fighting the bad guys once the world becomes known. That puts me in a position to like the first book a lot more than I’m likely to like future installments. But if you’re here for that type of story, it’s hard to argue it’s not an entertaining one.
In short, Girl Squad Volta was exactly the book I expected it to be—a magical girl YA fantasy with a low barrier of entry, a likable main character, and all the magic of new discovery.
Recommended if you like: magical girl YA stories, discovering hidden worlds.
Can I use it for Bingo? It’s hard mode for Self-Published, and it also is First in a Series, includes Dreams, and is written by an Author of Color.
Overall rating: 15 of Tar Vol’s 20. Four stars on Goodreads.

2024.05.12 15:03 el3ctropreacher Are people actually lamenting the cancellation of the great Web?

Like for instance rocksteady went from single-player story based superhero games which were regarded as pretty great (at least) abd then went on to Squad which is pretty much hated around the place. So do people think the great Web would have been a different situation. Like maybe a multiplayer game would be cool but live service always seems to let people down. But maybe I'm wrong.

2024.05.12 13:37 SquareAltruistic5548 X-Men in 1997--Reading Every X-Franchise Comic released in 1997: Alpha Flight, Beast, Bishop: XSE *SPOILERS*

https://preview.redd.it/11dsma6pfzzc1.jpg?width=787&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a6df4992f805e96fa7b0e8782be1018a2fff0a70
With the success and popularity of the X-Men '97 animated streaming series, I thought it would be a good idea to look directly at the year, and X-Men comics, that inspired its title. 1997 was a bit of a strange year in Marvel history. The Onslaught event had put a third of the Marvel universe into the alternate "Heroes Reborn" continuity, DC was working in conjunction with Marvel to publish the Amalgam line of one shots, longtime and beloved executive editor Mark Gruenwald had just passed away suddenly from a heart attack the previous summer, and Thunderbolts #1 would deliver one of the greatest plot twists in comic book history. The X-Line was still still an absolute leviathan at this point, publishing 30+ titles of various on-goings, one shots, and limited series across the year. Are any of them any good? Let's find out.
We'll be breaking this up into chunks since I have to read over 100 comics and I also don't want to be posting a novel every time I make out of these posts. I'll also not be reviewing reprints that were published in Essential X-Men as they were not actually written to be published in 1997.
--Alpha Flight Vol 2. #1-7 and Alpha Flight: In the Beginning #-1 by Writer Steve Seagle, and Pencilers Scott Clark, Martin Egeland, Brian Denham, Bryan Hitch, and Anthony Winn
The most evil government in the 616 Marvel Universe isn't Latveria, The United States, Russia, or China, it's Canada. The engage in child trafficking, kidnapping, mass surveillance, mind control, and human experimentation--all in the first issue! Beast was right, our insidious neighbors to the north are Mutantkind's greatest foe.
The new series, which picks up "several" years after Alpha Flight Vol 1., opens the only way that it really could: With Wolverine! Of course this is just a Wolverine robot copy that Guardian, aka James MacDonald "Mac" Hudson, is in a training exercise with. Things don't go well when the Ol'Canucklehead does what he does best, in a robot clone sort of way, to Mac and impales him with his claws. James is dragged off by some men, and General Clarke and some mysterious figures wrapped in shadow say some cryptic things. This is a common motif for this volume so get used to it.
We then flash forward to Puck, aka Eugene Milton Judd, who is sort of our main character for this volume. He has been living like an average Canadian since Alpha broke up at the Vol 1. Drinking beer, saying "eh" a lot, and having an apartment. He receives a mysterious piece of information about the nefarious dealings going on at a reformed Alpha Flight. This is a common motif for this volume so get used to it.
Puck decides to bring this information to Vindicator, aka Heather McNeil Hudson, his former teammate and and Guardian's Ex(?) Wife. She has been been having PTSD flashback dreams about witnessing Guardian blowing up back in Volume 1. She and Puck meet at a coffee shop to discuss the message when they're suddenly attacked by armored goons! Said goons turn out to be Department H operatives who knock out our heroes and drag them back to Department H to be drafted into a new Alpha Flight.
We have some old and new members to be introduced to in the new Alpha. Maddison Jefferies is there, although he gets kidnapped at the end of issue 1 and everyone is mind controlled to forget this so don't worry too much about him. Sasquatch, who everyone thinks is Walter Langkowski but turns out is a literal Big Foot, is completely bestial and looks very different from classic Sas. "Very Different" meaning he's drawn like a WildC.A.T.s or Spawn character. Then we have our new characters and ohhhh boy. First up is Manbot, who's a guy named Bernie Lachenay that Department H grafted into an old Box robot. He mostly rolls around, is mysterious, and may have his own agenda. Then we have our trio of new mutant characters. First is Murmer, aka Arelette Truffaut, who is uhhhh French Canadian and talks with a french accent. Her power is touch based mind control that is as effective as the plot requires. She is also constantly trying to get with Radius, aka Jared Corbo, who has Unus the Untouchable powers but worse since he can't turn them off and also a terrible personality. He CAN'T FEEL or LIVE A NORMAL LIFE due to his force field, so don't even try to get close to him, MAN! One of those edgy 90s characters that everyone hates 25 years after the fact and kind of only shows up today as an easter egg or corpse for some sort of mutant massacre. Finally we have Flex, aka Adrian Corbo, who is a wimpy little sad boy. He can make his hands, and occasionally ankles, into knives. Sunfire makes an appearance seeking help for a radiation poisoning/cancer plot line. Finally, Guardian reappears, who has been mysteriously de-aged to 19 years old and has no memories of his former life.
So many mysteries lie at the heart of Department H, will our heroes ever get to the bottom of them? I think my main problem with the title is two fold, the art and the fact that they are just kind of spinning their wheels for these issues. They fight a new Zodiac, who has some sort of elaborate plot that will be resolved later I presume. They fight The Master of the World, except not really since he is a robot clone created by Department H to train the team. They fight Mesmero for two and half issues in a diner that just ends with him getting away and Murmur having a breakdown after being hit in the face with a pie. All of it feels like the team is just having its time wasted by Department H. The series itself is operating off of this 90s X-Files style paranoia about corrupt governments, militarized super heroes, and thought control through the institutions we trust. Which is a neat concept, and predates the Ultimates and The Authority by several years. However it just is really taking its sweet time getting going.
The art, with the exception of Issue #6 drawn by Bryan Hitch, is very...Liefeldian in parts. Guardian has that sort of sneering muzzle that Liefeld patented in X-Force in the early 90s. Vindicator and Murmur are incredibly, impossibly, thin and elongated and at times almost look like they don't have organs or bones. The action is kind of hard to follow in parts as well. Not my favorite visual style at all.
The -1 issue follows the meeting and then the marriage of James and Heather, and features, who else, WOLVERINE. It has Stan Lee show up as a Catholic priest to marry them as well. The issue is also notable in that it's the first appearance of Chinook, a golden age Canadian superhero who controls the wind, who shows up for all of one page to save Wolverine before crashing into a cosmic ray collector screaming "AIEEEEEE THE PAIN" and horribly mutating into a villain. Funny stuff.
Would I recommend Alpha Flight Volume 2? Well, it's starts off really slow and the art is really damn spotty at times. The themes and ideas it's dealing with are about a half decade ahead of their time, so I'll give it that. If you can grin and bear it, maybe?
--Beast Vol 1. #1-3 by Writers Keith Giffen and Terry Kavanagh and Penciler Cedric Nocon
Karma, aka Xuân Cao Manh, has been, editorially, stuck in a really shitty situation. For the past 10 years, real time, she has been searching for her kidnapped younger siblings Leong and Nga. Well guess what Karma fans? The dozens of you out there will finally see this plot point resolved! In a 3 issue limited series starring Beast and Cannonball!
Viper, who is seeking revenge against Karma because her evil brother Trân mindcontrolled her to be a part of Karma's evil uncle's harem(gross), has turned over the siblings to Spiral. Old six arms mutates them into aged up killing machine genetic abominations. Oh yeah, this is a 90s Terry Kavanagh X-Men story alright. Karma tracks them down with Beast and Cannonball's help and uhhhh rescues them? However, Beast says they're going to be stuck as freakish living weapons forever. Sucks to be you Karma.
You know, this is a lost art in modern comics. Devoting an entire limited series about a whole other character to resolving a long outstanding plot point that no one else has really addressed in years. It's kind of charming almost. The art is fine. Read if you want to see a throwback to a style that isn't really used in modern comics a lot. Or if you're a fan of Karma.
--Bishop: XSE Vol 1. #1 by Writer John Ostrander and Penciler Steve Epting
Bishop leads the XAVIER SECURITY ENFORCERS consisting of his racist sister and two other dorks against evil mutants who want to see the fragile peace between humans and mutants established after they had worked together to overthrow the evil sentinel regime broken. A decedent of Sebastian Shaw and the Hellfire Club are also pulling the strings from the shadows, natch.
I like John Ostrander a lot. Suicide Squad, The Spectre, and Grimjack are some of my favorite comics of all time. Steve Epting is also a really good artist, and while he's not quite what he would become here the art is clean and attractive. However, I feel like this issue is a bit light on both plot and character. One doesn't really get a sense of Bishop at all, he's just sort of there. Oh well, read if you're a fan of the character. Plus there's a character named Dogface!
Next Time: Cable & Deadpool & The Daydreamers.

2024.05.11 10:28 Particular_Grade_479 Prediction: James Gunn's DCU will eat shit (business wise)

Foreword: I love the man, very talented popular filmmaker, and he's in good form! I loved The Suicide Squad and liked Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3. So I will not talk about the creative side of things here, only about money.
So, I'd be happy to be proven wrong, I wish him success, but James Gunn approach to building a new superheroes cinematic universe at Warner seems gauche to me. Of course there's the initial problems of 1 - The superhero/connected universe fatigue thing, people having been finally given a climax with Endgame and maybe not wanting to do the "you need to ingest everything we feed you to get the full superhero experience we're building up" thing all over again, and 2 - Doing take two of what can be described as a very public, disastrous and recent attempt at doing the DCU. We know that a small percentage of the audience is cult-like in his love for this previous attempt, another will be really curious toward the new one, but as for the rest, where the money truly lies, can you really bet on the fact they'll care about seeing it being done all over again, a couple years later, when everyone is a bit tired of superheroes?
So there is these initial hurdles, that you can't escape from, but what Gunn has decided to do about it confonds me. First, being messy, not cleanly delimiting his take from the previous one, and also using a multimedia approach. People got excited about the MCU in part for the building, cumulative aspect. We have a single movie with a single superhero, you're excited about us adding, adding, adding, you can follow it all, and then 10 years later you're being rewarded by experiencing a giant multimedia franchise, a hundred characters existing through movies and TV, live action and animation. Gunn instead is like "Okay, those specific movie characters from the previous universe, they're here, in TV form, for new seasons in my new universe", and I'm like, WTF? I didn't even watch the first season of Peacemaker, why would I watch the second one or an Amanda Waller TV show? And why is the first project an animated TV series, why isn't it a big movie blockbuster? I know that audiences are more savvy today, especially if you're doing videos instruction manuals like he did announcing his universe, but I also feel like they're more unfocused that they ever been. And if you start by saying "Here's a bunch of characters, some old versions, some new versions, some in movies, some on TV, some animated, some live action (some both), some are in my universe but others are NOT, they're in movies from another universe, even though they're the same characters that I'll use", you're not going to hook anyone!
Then of course, there's the characters he wants to begin with. Howling Commandos, what the fuck is that? The Authority, the hell? Paradise Lost, what are we talking about? You're going to tell me "The MCU jumpstarted his thing without Spiderman or the X-Men" but I'm going to answer that they didn't do it with Rick Flag Sr. level-characters or the supporting cast of a more popular title. Again, an Amanda Waller TV show is one of your building blocks? And it's recycled from something that failed before? That's not going to hook the current audience, with the kind of mindset that it has!
His Superman movie is the only logical move that he has right now, and he has filled it with weird characters the general audience has not notions about, with the strange decision (but exemplary of the general approach) of casting Nathan Fillon as a secondary Green Lantern (what does it mean when it comes to The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, and isn't it a Superman movie? And why is it not the popular Green Lantern ?). Progression towards a gigantic scale while maintening coherence was the narrative tool that turned the MCU into a drug for spectators, and to throw it all away... I don't know, man.
You're also going to say "The man already beat the odds with Guardians of the Galaxy, he can do it all over gain". But we're not talking about a single movie, financed by the popularity of previous films, that might go on if successful. A thousand new things are being launched simultanously to establish a coherent cinematic universe. He's got all of his things planned out (in a very counter-intuitive way I feel like), they've been made public, the money is being spent. You can't brush it off as just a change of scale, it's such a change of scale that the previous rules don't apply anymore.
I feel he's approaching all of this very much as a screenwriter, working within the limits of his own creative brain: I'm building arcs, I'm taking small steps towards the meat of the story, first I'm creating a world, then I'll put my main players in, but since I can't let go of previous characters I've written for, they're here too... But, and it's a shame to say that, but still, you have to think like a mindless businessman to put butts in seats at a scale that will sustain this kind of giant projects. It's ruthless, cynical filmmaking, that why we all hate it, but that's why it can work financially and brainwash audience into gulping it all up!
Anyway, what do you think, is Warner about to fuck up (again, financially) the same gigantic thing twice in a few years?

2024.05.10 23:36 browncharliebrown The punisher cops comic is an extremely shallow/performative deconstruction

It fundamentally misses the point that cops don't believe the law goes far enough and thus want to kill people. That issue where the Punisher he goes after taking his symbol just says " I kill people, follow captain America or I'll kill you" and it's not even responding to the point. It's a shallow deconstruction. I'm going to point to a bunch of better deconstructions.
The first one Born is by Ennis who points that wanting to be the Punisher ignores all the trauma, dehumanized nature the punisher goes through to get to that point. No one should want to be the punisher because that fundmentally requires a want for people to die as a principal. And look as someone who was SA'd I get wanting your SAer to die but the act of wanting to kill loads of people requires a sanding down of your humanity and it's a power fantasy not an actual reality.
If you want a funnier deconstruction, Punisher 2099 is just as shallow but it's hell of a lot more funnier. Or the vigilante squad from marvel knights run is extremely on the nose but it does a good job of showing as a general principal why the punisher in real is dumb.
However, I think the best deconstruction comes deconstruction of Frank comes in Punisher: The End. I think the problem with a lot of deconstruction of Frank is people will assume it doesn't apply to then i.e Even if Frank wrongly killed someone then I would be better than Frank. I think the end shows makes the case that even if these people deserve to die, killing these people can have major consequences ( in this case the end of humanity) and potentially is kinda shallow. It's more of critique of consequentialism in general and those are extreme circumstances but it's to showcase a point on how just killing people who deserve in it of itself might cause more harm.
And there are plenty of other deconstruction of killing criminals See Litterally every mainstream superhero comic that tackles the kill code. There are so many great stories
Sorry this has been bugging me for a while and the panel keeps getting reposted
