2024.05.28 20:18 unusualgato Anyone else throw in the towel on IT and decide to switch to accounting

So I honestly am so fucking over IT that I'm 99% going to call it quits and switch to accounting. I feel like I cannot be the only one and I've seen other people mentioning it. There is another post on the main sub but not about accounting. IT is not even worth it anymore there is not enough jobs to go around and jobs that are not even good like $23 an hour want a Developer, sysadmin, and helpdesk all rolled into one. 1000 people apply for that. The interviews are the most agonizing trivia shitshows possible. Thing is that all those people saying that every job requires continual learning are wrong, none of them are as bad as IT. I should not have to be doing multiple certifications a year spending my time after work studying just to barely get by with a $50k IT job. Our Accountants at work may have to stay late one week out of the month but they go home and can watch TV. The skills do not change as bad as they do in IT. When I started in IT 14 years ago it was more reasonable but for a minute now the upskilling requirements are too extreme for what they wanna pay.
I feel like its not a total waste too knowing some IT since there are accounting jobs where its required like IT Audit.

2024.05.28 20:17 stealthypimpslap Meaningless memorization misery

Anyone feel like we are forced to spend excessive time memorizing the minute differences between different terms and services when studying for certification exams? From my experience, most IT certification tests do not actually evaluate your understanding of the concepts as a whole, but focuses more on memorizing meaningless defining characteristics of very similiar topics. This has been my analysis after CCNA, CompTIA, EC-C, and now AWS.
For example:
A global company hosts its web application on Amazon EC2 instances behind an Application Load Balancer (ALB). The web application has static data and dynamic data. The company stores its static data in an Amazon S3 bucket. The company wants to improve performance and reduce latency for the static data and dynamic data. The company is using its own domain name registered with Amazon Route 53. What should a solutions architect do to meet these requirements?
In order to answer this, you are expected to memorize every precise detail about both AWS Global Accelerator and CloudFront. In particular, the fact that Global Accelerator Standard does not support CloudFront distribution endpoints. Even if you understood that CloudFront improves performance and reduces latency for static/dynamic data, you are still not close to determining the correct answer. You are also expected to memorize that CloudFront uses Edge Locations to cache content while Global Accelerator uses Edge Locations to find an optimal pathway to the nearest regional endpoint.
This sort of question would be difficult for even the most experience AWS admins, let alone people with zero experience trying to take an "Associate" level exam.

2024.05.28 20:15 Apprehensive-Bid3280 I completed my A1 but I dont really know if I'm ready for A2.

So its all in the title. Going back, I got serious learning german from May 5 and completed A1 in around 15-20 days. By may 23rd, i was attempting Goethe Institut Sample Papers and I was scoring decent on Horen and Lesen. I was consistently getting 12/15-14/15, sometimes 15/15 on Horen and same for Lesen where my scores were consistently higher but only got 15/15 once. I havent practiced shreiben a lot, my sprechen is going pretty good as well. Now the problem is, I dont know if I'm ready to start A2, I have my resources ready and waiting. I also have my A1 Glossary book, since i might not know every single german vocabulary from A1 yet. Should i get started with A2 or learn vocab and practice shreiben, do all the A1 sample papers for a few more days and revisit all the grammar topics to really set the foundation tight? What do you suggest?
I feel like I can learn really quick, as ive managed to do A1 in less than a month by self studying whereas students from goethe institut who have taken intensive courses take 2 months. But my mind is not convinced or better word is "it feels like its not ready yet."
Hope you help me guys! Thanks..

2024.05.28 20:08 FreeButterscotch6971 Committing to months of study. Az400

I would like to prepare and pass the az-400 certification, but after some initial research it looks to be around 60 - 100 hours of studying. I, like everyone else, have a busy life with full time job, commute and social responsibilities. What advice could you provide and how to stay motivated, it seems like a long path ahead of me. Any tips and tricks appreciated. I have no experience with DevOps but I have been in system admin for 16 years.

First...Previous
Colonist Booker Smith
UNS Lightbringer
Of all the skills I’d picked up throughout my short lifetime spent back on Earth, I never would have guessed that the ability to mix up homemade hairspray would prove to be so useful. Looking over myself in the captain’s bathroom mirror, however, I could hardly deny the results. Though our faces looked rather different, if one were to judge purely based upon hairstyle, Theruf and I would be indistinguishable.
Adjusting the newly-shortened cuff of Theruf’s uniform sleeve, I exited the lavatory and at a brisk clip took off back toward our ship’s medbay. Stepping inside the room, I watched as Emma and a newly-thawed evolutionary biologist with thinning hair carefully carved into one of the corpses produced during our recent confrontations with the Phylix. Meanwhile, against the room’s far wall, a tall, lanky electrocranial engineer formerly employed by Cogitolink could be seen hooking up various wires to a sedated Theruf whilst John kept watch.
“What all do we know?” I asked, stepping over to the dissection table and taking in its scent akin to that of rotten vegetation mixed with maple syrup. If we were to successfully blend in with Phylix civilization, adequate biological knowledge would be every bit as important as cultural.
“I’ve never seen anything quite like this!” Replied Em, her tone absolutely giddy as she looked up from the microscope under which rested a clump of Phylix ‘flesh’. “Sure, they might look Human on the outside, but internally the differences between us are staggering. For example, while they do obtain a vast majority of their energy from the consumption of organic matter, Phylix also appear to be capable of sophisticated photosynthesis.”
While surely for someone more well-versed in life sciences all this would be incredibly fascinating, I as a hairdresser was far more interested in things that would aid me directly. “And how do they match up in comparison to us?” I asked, hoping to more fully understand what we were up against here.
Experienced as Emma no doubt was in dealing with plants, comparing and contrasting different organisms was far more in the evolutionary biologist’s domain, and as such it was him who next spoke up. “Their bodies appear to prioritize energy efficiency above all else, with some concessions being made for reflex speed,” he began, carefully analyzing an extracted strand of alien sinew as he spoke. “They require fewer than half the calories we do in order to function at optimal capacity, and a small portion of that is covered for by their photosynthetic skin.“
“So we need to eat more than they do. What else do the Phylix have over on us?”
“Let’s see… Phylix skin is tougher than ours, and they appear to possess powerful regenerative abilities almost like those of bamboo. We have them beat at just about everything else, however…” The biologist half-smirked, glancing over at a computer screen loaded with variables beyond my understanding and typing in yet another set of data. “Their reflexes, while rather fast given the gravity of this planet, are nevertheless inferior to our own. We also far outclass them in terms of strength, speed, and endurance.”
“Their central nervous system is different too,” murmured the electrocranial engineer, looking over a three dimensional model presumably of Theruf’s brain—its central mass sequestered inside his skull with roots extending outward from it to form what we Humans had at first mistaken for hair. “I’m seeing signs of both repaired and newly-created neurons within this one’s brain: Humans can’t do that. Phylix neuroplasticity is also off the charts, indicating an enhanced capacity for learning and the ability to adapt to whatever brain damage can’t be healed.”
That was good news for Theruf, at least, given what we had done to him when first obtaining a root sample. If there was one thing I knew about evolution, however, it was that there’s no such thing as a free lunch. “What’s the trade off?” I asked, hoping for something else that we might be able to leverage against the Phylix.
“I’ll need more specimens to say for sure, but looking at this one, my current hypothesis is that they traded away much of their pattern recognition.”
This insight, while much appreciated, was not why we thawed out a Cogitolink employee. “Will you be able to download his memories?” I asked, tapping repeatedly upon my forehead for emphasis. Initially, I had planned to simply interrogate Theruf for information on how to blend in, but threatening a fanatic with martyrdom was about as effective as threatening an alcoholic with a second gin and tonic. Having all the soldier’s knowledge loaded into my GRIM would allow me to blend in seamlessly with his kind, eliminating much of the involved guesswork.
“That depends…” Replied the engineer, his tone unnervingly somber as he navigated to yet another screen. “Their neural structure is too different from ours for a direct transcription, meaning I likely won’t be able to get anything more than basic information… Unless…”
“Unless what?” John growled, looking down upon our unconscious prisoner with icy disregard.
Following a long moment’s hesitation, the engineer eventually relented and with a heavy sigh imparted upon us our second option. “If we run a high-power charge through his brain, the computer will be able to map almost the entire thing. We’ll be able to blend in with his kind perfectly…”
“Lemme guess: there a big fuckin’ catch, isn’t there?” John half-groaned, staring down the former Cogitolink employee as he awaited the inevitable affirmation and elaboration.
“If turning his brain into a heap of organic mush is what you’d consider a drawback, then yes.”
Silence fell over the room as we all contemplated the weight of such a decision. Killing in self-defense was one thing, but the borderline execution of a sapient being, no matter how vile, was another matter entirely. All it took to shatter this quiet, however, were two words from the commodore’s mouth. “Do it.”
Again, the engineer hesitated. “Are you sure?” He asked, his fingers remaining at rest in spite of the order. The rest of us, meanwhile, were too stunned to speak out.
“Don’t you lot forget the contract we signed!” Barked John, his tone booming with power and authority befitting a military man. “Humanity’s survival is our top priority. At all costs.
At last regaining her voice after several long moments of speechlessness, Em stepped past the commodore to stand in solidarity at the engineer’s side. “Theruf is a brainwashed victim of his own society—we can’t just murder him for following orders!”
“Let’s not be overdramatic here!” Cautioned the biologist, his expression utterly unfazed by the notion of putting down our prisoner. “He’s a fascist soldier who’d kill every last one of us given half a chance. At least this way he’ll die for a good cause.”
Indecision immobilized me amidst my fellow’s colonists’ arguing. Back when I first pressed Theruf’s own gun to the back of his head, the urge to end him on the spot had been palpable. Now, however, given the chance to put things into perspective, I wasn’t sure what we should do with the captive. So I remained silent as the lot of them continued their impromptu trial of the unconscious Phylix.
“I’m not so sure I’m comfortable doing this…” The engineer winced, his hands falling away from the keyboard as he cast down his gaze from the waiting commodore’s glare.
“Fine…” John growled, taking a step towards the surgery bay computer and placing his own hand upon it. “Just tell me what commands to type in and I’ll do it. No blood on your hands, right? Just mine.”
Evidently dissatisfied with this rationalization, Em rounded the dissection table and began to approach the commodore as though to stop him manually. Her efforts, however, were thwarted when the biologist moved to intercept her. “We can’t take any risks here!” He sighed, outstretching an arm toward me for emphasis. “If Booker’s disguise fails, it’s game over for us, for the colony—maybe for humanity for all we know!”
“Listen to your fellow scientist,” sighed John, regarding Emma with a confusing concoction of warm understanding and cold, ruthless utilitarianism. “If you think I get some kind of sick kick out of this, then you’re dead wrong; but I swore an oath to keep Humanity safe, and if I have to kill a million of these bastards to do it, then I will not hesitate.”
“Wait!” Stammered the engineer, grabbing John’s arm as though to prevent him from pressing any of the keys. “There might be another way. If you guys can obtain a few more living samples for me, I might be able to calibrate a non-lethal mapping charge.”
“And how many ‘samples’ is that going to take?” Asked the biologist, his tone dripping with skepticism.
For a moment, the former Cogitolink employee hesitated to provide us with an answer to this fairly straightforward inquiry. Eventually, however, he relented in his secrecy. “Forty… Maybe fifty?”
“Getting that many captives would take time that we don't have, Manley!" John barked, offhandedly referencing the engineer's surname amidst his admonishment of the idea.
This argument continued for what must have been half an hour, devolving at times into a shouting match between Emma and the commodore before then cooling off yet again into cold, yet relatively-peaceful periods of debate. This rhythm of argument was disrupted, however, when Em jabbed her finger towards me. "Booker is the one whose going to be wearing Theruf's appearance: it should be his choice whether or not to sacrifice him."
Whereas before the group had been divided into two sides, on this matter Manley and the biologist seemed to agree with Em, deriving a somewhat frustrated sigh from the commodore as he suddenly found himself outnumbered. "Fine..." John conceded, searching my expression for any indication of what route I might take here. Unfortunately for him, even I had not a clue at the moment what to do. "Booker: you've heard our cases for and against this plan, so what do you think we should do?"
If I'm honest, I would have been perfectly happy to let this debate play out entirely without my input. If I agreed to this plan, then the sap of our prisoner would be on my hands; yet if I declined and we wound up failing, then it would be my bloody signature upon the colony's death warrant. The decision was by no means an easy one. Perhaps from an outside perspective, John might seem to be overly callous, but to those of us in that room it was abundantly clear that his actions stemmed from a genuine desire to protect the colony.
Before the lot of them dragged me into this debate, I'd have been perfectly fine with either decision, but now that it was my finger on the trigger, I simply couldn't bring myself to pull it. "We can work with the basics," I confirmed, prompting from the engineer a sigh of relief as he began calibrating a weak mapping charge that would only penetrate the most well-trodden of our prisoner's neural pathways. "We're going to need more identities to infiltrate the camp with anyways. Theruf's people should come looking for him soon: I'll play the part and draw whoever shows up back here so we can capture them."
"And what do you propose we do with them once they're in our hands?" Growled John, still evidently not quite sold on this idea. "We don't have the resources to keep them locked up for long."
"We could use the cryopods!" Replied the botanist in my stead—Fortunately so given my lack of a workable answer. "Judging by Phylix cell structure, they appear to be capable of hibernating to a certain degree, much like certain plants on Earth. So long as we keep the cryopod temperatures in the correct range and thaw out any prisoners once in a while to ensure they don't break down, it should be enough to keep them sedated or at least docile." Em concluded, her expression hardened by newfound acceptance of our circumstances.
Completing his setup of the charge to no fanfare from the rest of us, Manley typed in one final chunk of commands before pressing down upon the terminal's 'enter' key, causing Theruf's body to twitch slightly as a loading bar appeared on screen showing the download progress. When at last the final pixel of white was overtaken by green, my GRIM was quick to notify me of the database's new addition.
Gently pulling Theruf's gun from its holster at my side and turning it over in my grasp, my brain tingled in response to the artificial neuron stimulation of Theruf's implanted memories. Gesturing for the others to follow me, I once again traversed our ship's hallways until the night sky's glittering canvas shone overhead.
Back when I had first held Theruf's weapon in my hands, it had felt completely foreign to me. The mechanisms on it made nary a lick of sense, and in all honesty I probably couldn't have fired it if I tried. Standing amongst the skin trees with our prisoner's memories in my mind, however, I was able to draw the gun and flick off it's safety in a single fluid motion. Behind me, the other colonists watched as I put three shots into one of the trees in front of us, aiming for a large central scab eerily reminiscent of an eye. Trails of crimson dripping from tree's flesh marked where my shots had landed., and though none of them actually hit their mark, the fact that all three bullets even hit the tree at all despite my never firing a gun in my life was in itself evidence of the download's success.
"Not bad..." John chuckled briefly, stepping up beside me and drawing his own gun before planting three shots square in the scab's center, causing it to burst like a blood-filled balloon. "Your aim still needs work, though."
Studying for a moment the bullet holes left behind by my demonstration, Manley hummed in contemplation. "Muscle memory transcriptions are never perfect," he explained, looking curiously upon the weapon as I returned it to its holster. "They can't override more powerful neural connections for example, which is why John's aim is still superior. That being said, Booker, I'm more concerned about what you know than what you can do. The chip should provide you with context when you encounter situations common to Theruf, but it's unlikely you'll be able to recall complex details. You know how to use that gun, sure, but I'd wager to guess you still haven't a clue how it works."
He was right, of course. I knew that I had to hold down the weapon's trigger for at least one second in order for it to fire properly, but I still hadn't a clue why that was the case. Closing my eyes and concentrating upon the information newly nestled within me, I cleared my throat and assuming a rough approximation of our prisoner's voice spoke out. "I am he known as Theruf..." I began, mentally exploring every available aspect of this newfound role dictated to me by the GRIM. "I was raised in the small town of Dzidra. My father works as a mechanic and I have two siblings: Mathul and Zekari... John: get everyone inside the ship and prepare your men for an ambush. I'll go back to the ridge where me and Boris first saw the Phylix and wait for more soldiers to show up, then I'll lure them back here to be captured alive. Can you work with that?"
"Are you seriously asking if I can prep a simple ambush?" Began the commodore, sounding almost offended by the notion of such a thing being in question. "Don't worry about us, 'Theruf': just bring some guests and I'll throw the damn party!"
Satisfied with our plan, John gave me a pat on the back for good luck as I set off once more into the night, weaving between skin trees until our ship’s lights faded from view altogether. At last arriving once more at the overlook, I sat down a few feet from the ledge and there awaited the arrival of Theruf’s fellow soldiers.
Glimmers of new dawn peered out from under the distant horizon amidst my watch, casting shadows upon Theruf's wicked workplace as though to hide its atrocities from the judgmental light of day. Only just had this planet's parent star crested into view when at last were the forest's rhythmic respirations interrupted by a distant grinding of tires against dirt.
Rising to my feet and making my way toward the noise's source, I soon enough found myself stood at the edge of a hitherto-unseen clearing. Hiding myself from sight behind a nearby skin tree, I watched as a bulky military vehicle trundled uphill to then find rest upon the relatively-level forest floor. No sooner had this vehicle come to a stop than did three soldiers clad in uniforms not unlike Theruf's step out. "This is where our brothers in arms were last known to have been," began one of the men. "We should fan out and search the area."
Sounds like that's my queue... Taking a deep breath to steel my nerves, I dramatically limped out into the clearing, waving frantically to my supposed comrades. Though at first they had raised their guns to the noise of my stumbling out, these soldiers were quick to lower their weapons as they got a good look at me.
"Theruf?" One of the soldiers called out, stepping toward me without hesitation. "Good to see you well, man: where are the others?"
"They need help, Fhasda!" I sputtered out in a tone of faux-panic as Theruf's memories filled in the gap of this one's name. "We were investigating a strange object crashing into these forests... And we found something!"
"What exactly did you find?" Asked one of the other soldiers, looking upon me with newfound skepticism.
Staggering back into the forest with a gesture commanding these three soldiers to follow, I turned back around to conceal a grin as they did so without hesitation. "Let me show you: they're this way!" I exclaimed to the unwitting Phylixm, deliberately remaining vague with my explanation so as to keep their curiosity piqued. When at last the ship's lights came into view, I slowed down to allow for Fhasda and the others to catch up as the four of us continued on toward the now vacant entrance ramp. "They're in here!" I told them, pointing toward the open entryway.
Gasps resounded out from the trio of guards as they looked upon the Lightbringer in total disbelief. "What is that thing?" One of them asked, prompting from Fhasda an unsure shrug as he recklessly approached the main ramp.
"We don't know!" I lied, leaning back against a skin tree to signal my exhaustion. "I know they were brought here by whatever attacked us. I think it's gone for now, but I'll keep watch out here in case it comes back!"
"Good idea," Fhasda affirmed, gesturing for his men to take formation around him as without another moment's hesitation they walked up the ship's entrance ramp and entered into the jaws of a waiting ambush...

2024.05.28 19:31 Biminibonbasic 2024 Flight Dispatch Certificate Schools?

I’m a university student looking to get my dispatcher certificate. Planning to finish my degree but I feel that airline dispatcher is the career for me. I’m based in New York, and I have the whole summer ahead of me with no plans. I can dedicate the time to study the rigorous material. Any recommendations for schools around me? I was told of one in Queens (Academics of Flight?) but can’t find much information about it. Any other information is greatly appreciated.

2024.05.28 19:30 CLubbr3X Am I possibly diagnosed with ADHD?

I know this must be a very basic question, and a lot of such questions might be overflowing here.
I'm from India, here stuff like ADHD, OCD, Depression aren't given much thought. If you discuss about this to your elders, they'll just laugh at you shooing the possibility away. From the very beginning of my academic life, I have been taught things the hard way, scolded or punished whenever I made mistakes, Teachers punished me at school and when I get back home my parents continue with the punishing. I don't blame my parents, I blame the saddistic teacher who calls up parents everytime the kid forgot to do his homework. Growing up that way, I was forced into studying whether I liked it or not and hence was able to score very decent marks. This was my school life.
Then came college, I did my engineering at a college nearby, the thing with college here is...... there's a huge frikin gap between school and college no bridge can cover. An year's worth of school material is supposed to be learnt within 3 months along with projects, labs, viva etc. And the most important part is nobody cared whether you passed or failed. There was no spoon feeding here, there's no one to force me to sit on a desk and make me study or no one to beat me up if I make a mistake. I naturally embraced my true lazy self. I started getting distracted too frequently, couldn't concentrate anything related to my subjects. If I'm supposed to study engineering drawing my focus wanders off to the wiki page of a Ping Pong game system made completely by electronic signals. If I'm supposed to learn electronics then my focus wanders off to to drawing 3D isometric images using engineering drawing. I hate sticking to a syllabus in short.
Up until this point, I had never considered the possibility of me having ADHD. My college is over but still I'm having doubts regarding that. When I disclosed this matter to my parents they just told me I was just lazy.
Anyways here are some things you guys can consider:
  1. I get distracted pretty easily, I can't concentrate on studies/ academics. However in the heat of an exam, I somehow manage to concentrate and study barely enough to pass (Just the night before the exam) hence f**king up my sleep schedule until the exams are over.
  2. However, I can spend a whole day doing something I like, I get immersed in it not knowing the passage of time. (For eg: working on my bike, or watching your favourite series, reading your favourite book). Isn't this contrary to the general notion of ADHD?
  3. I don't know if all of this is because I smoke weed on a regular basis?
  4. I might slightly have OCD, I arrange my desk, wardrobe etc. myself and if anyone touches them I get mad angry and irritated.
  5. However I don't forget stuff and I'm not clumsy as the symptoms suggest. I've seen many people forget the most important things out of fear. Be it an important certificate necessary for an interview, your car keys, I rarely forget stuff like that. This is a huge symptom of ADHD and I can safely say I have that box unchecked.
  6. When I get bored, I get very very very irritated, like very much. I get hyper and prance around the house cursing for no reason.
  7. Mood swings, this doesn't affect me that much. Again this is also said to be a very big symptom of ADHD. I have control over my emotions.
  8. When I'm with the people I love, I can listen to them talking about the most boring or non sensical thing in the world, but when I'm with people I'm least bothered about, I zone out, even if they're talking something really chill and interesting. Many people dislike me because of this.
  9. I'm not too much of a talker, however again, when I'm with people I absolutely love, I'm talkitive and keep on blabbering.
  10. There are many more things I want to add but damn I can't remember anything more.
So, should I go to a doctor and properly diagnose for ADHD or is it unnecessary?

2024.05.28 19:25 Loving_Gay What’s the best industry to go into?

What’s the best industry to go into
I have currently finished a L3 Extended Diploma in Cyber Security in England, I have been considering three different sectors, what is the most stable career that makes the most money to the best hours and has a more defined path such as certain education, certifications or experience
I am looking at the following industries:
Health/Law Enforcement
IT
Engineering
So what’s the best route to get into the industry and what’s the best industry with most opportunities
I plan to move to America or Canada, I don’t know if I should study over there or move over as a skilled worker since Canada has a skilled worker program

2024.05.28 19:14 smartserve2018 What job in the union after the age of 30?

Yes friends, unfortunately I had to open this post. I am 30 years old. I graduated from the university with a degree in business administration in a foreign country and then studied marketing in college in Canada. I obtained many certificates, even went to adult high school and completed grade 12 with 95 in overall but I could not find a job. I live in Scarborough. I applied for 1000's of jobs for various professions. I prepared a nice CV. But I couldn't get a job. I even applied for the army. I passed their exams but they did not contact me again. As an immigrant, I don't have any acquaintances or friends in any company. That's why it's much harder for me to get a job. Maybe I'm unlucky. During this period, I did passenger transportation or food delivery to finance myself. Unfortunately, the earnings in this field are very low, the expenses are high and any career is not possible. Anyway, this is my situation... Now I want to learn any job and move in that direction. I'm tired now. I'm also in a bad financial situation.
Even though I don't want to ask which union and which job do you think will make me happy, I have to ask because I have no idea. I have no inclination towards any construction profession. All I want is to earn enough to support myself. First, I will apply to apprenticeship programs because I have no experience in any subject. I am not picky now, but if I had the chance to choose; I would like not to work in the cold or prefer an area where there is a lot of work in the winter, which is less dangerous than others, and where I can become a journeyman in a shorter time. I will be meeting for the painting apprenticeship program on Friday. I also applied to the electrical apprenticeship program. I really did my best, but I couldn't find a job in my field. Nowadays, even fast food restaurants are very picky. I don't know if there is unemployment, but I have felt unemployed for a long time. Thank you for your help. I'm really tired. Even for the jobs I applied for voluntarily, they are very selective and I am not preferred. Thanks for understanding.

2024.05.28 19:11 Sinless05 How Can I Build My CV with No Experience?

Bit of context: UK Student, currently on a gap year, pursuing a career in finance, and will be attending a target this fall to study Maths and Econ. Only problem is that I have zero experience to my name (both relevant/non-relevant).
Given that I have roughly 3 months before spring week applications commence, and more than ample free time, I'm looking for recommendations on things that I could do to help strengthen my resume. Will also be applying for a variety of roles within finance (IB, AM, Trading, Consulting etc), if that changes anything.
What I'm currently considering:
  1. Personal Projects? - I've vaguely heard projects to be useful for tech-related roles, so I was wondering if the same could be said for finance? If so, how would I best go about this? Perhaps managing a virtual stock portfolio? Or would something like financial modelling be more appropriate?
  2. Online Courses/Certifications? - After lurking around on a few subreddits, I've started to become aware of the fact that people only really respect the CFA. Whilst I would like to go on and complete the CFA at some point, I understand that it's a process that takes years. With that in mind, are there any other courses that are worth doing? If yes, which would be the most beneficial? Excel? Data analytics? BMC?
I would greatly appreciate any form of tips or advice anyone has. Thank you in advance for the help!

2024.05.28 18:54 Loving_Gay What’s the best industry to go into?

What’s the best industry to go into
I have currently finished a L3 Extended Diploma in Cyber Security in England, I have been considering three different sectors, what is the most stable career that makes the most money to the best hours and has a more defined path such as certain education, certifications or experience
I am looking at the following industries:
Health/Law Enforcement
IT
Engineering
So what’s the best route to get into the industry and what’s the best industry with most opportunities
I plan to move to America or Canada, I don’t know if I should study over there or move over as a skilled worker since Canada has a skilled worker program

2024.05.28 18:27 AutoModerator A Look Back on PAGTATAG! Era Dissecting GENTO!

Released on May 13, 2023 via Sony Music Philippines. The song was written by Pablo and produced by him, his brother Joshua Daniel Nase, and Filipino-Canadian music producer Simon Servida. It uses gold mining as a metaphor for achieving success, alluding to the band's career.
The song entered two of Billboard's record charts: World Digital Song Sales—a first among Filipino groups—and the Philippines Songs charts, peaking at numbers eight and eleven, respectively. A dance challenge set to the song became a trend on TikTok. The accompanying music video, directed by Kerbs Balagtas, depicted the band members mining for gold. The group promoted the song with live performances and included it on the set list of their Pagtatag! World Tour (2023–2024). The song has received multiple accolades, including the Wishclusive Pop Performance of the Year award at the Wish 107.5 Music Awards 2024.

“GENTO” places SB19's bold talent and confidence into the spotlight, highlighting their strength and versatility as a group. The song offers a catchy word play, effortlessly weaving ganito (like this), ginto (gold), and gento, the Caviteño word for ganito. It delivers a powerful message of their growth as a group, after years of refinement--just like gold.
- SB19 drops new single 'GENTO', GMA News
Pablo talks about what 'Gento' means during SB19's appearance on AOS.
Pablo, Joshua, and Simon collaborated on the song remotely. From the outset, Pablo already has a clear vision of how the song would sound. He sent Simon a demo of the song along with some notes. Simon then integrated Pablo's notes into the production, making additional contributions to achieve Pablo's vision.
Pablo guided Simon by providing notes on what to change or add, using timestamps as references. To facilitate this process, Pablo sent Simon the demo version of the song featuring his vocals.
Servida Music YT
Simon noted that one element that particularly resonated with him was the song's association with gold or money. Inspired by this, he conceived the idea of creating a vocal sample, which became the main melody of the song.

[Verse 1: Pablo, Josh]
I want some I get some no later I woke up and baked that potato Got carbed to shape me for major But I stay me not mediocre Look at me tell me what you see all gucci but the real question is who's really me A movie's definitely not my reality 'cause you see marumi marumi marumi eww Marumi = Filthy Kadiri Disgusting
[Pre-Chorus: Stell]
Yeah I'm gonna see you later (later) Pagkatapos kong mag-shower (shower) After I take a shower Medyo ramdam ko na'ng power (power) 'Cause I'm starting to feel the power Kulang pa sa sour mga hater kaya But the sour is not enough for them haters that's why
Culture note: Power is slang for smelling bad due to bad hygiene. Sour is slang for 'looking dirty'
[Pre-Chorus: Justin]
Alamin ang mga bagay-bagay I will learn as much as I could 'Di pwedeng anay sa'king bahay Won't allow pests inside my home Tahimik lang daw ang matibay They say the strong ones are just silent Pero 'pag tinopak talagang mag-iingay (gento) But when frenzied surely will make noise
[Chorus: Ken]
Gento gento Like this, like this 'Di 'to basta-basta bingo bingo This isn't instant like bingo Need mo makumpleto parang bento gento You need to have it all just like a bento Ano kaya mo Like this, you think you can do it?
[Chorus: Pablo]
Pilit na hinukay ang bumbunan makakita lang ng ginto ginto Kept digging inside my head just to find gold Kahit na wala pang hinto ciento por ciento bawat bitaw ko mismo 'eto kaya mo Even without rest, I still give a hundred percent just right, now, can you do this? 'Di ka basta-basta makakakita ng gento You just won't simply find something like this
TL note: Here, ginto (gold) is being interchanged with gento (like this)
[Post-Chorus: Pablo]
Gento mm yeah yeah gento gento 'Di ka basta-basta makakakita ng gento You just won't simply find something like this
[Verse 2: Josh]
'Di ko na kailangan lumunok ng bato I don't really need to swallow a stone Hindi mala-darna 'to aandar ang makina ko I am not like Darna, I can have my engine run Tanging mekaniko ay ako 'la nang moni moniko I am my own mechanic, there's no need for Moniko Sa daming pinagdaanan nagpatong na'ng istori ko With all that I've been through, my stories are now storeys Usyoso mga chismoso halika't pumanhik na rito uh Busybodies, gossip, come up here and beg
Culture note: Darna is a Filipino comic book superhero who needs to swallow a magic stone and yell Darna! to gain powers. Moniko is from a famous Filipino tongue twister, Moniko being a mechanic.
[Verse 2: Pablo]
'Di naman talaga madali aminin ko pa man o hindi It was never an easy feat admit it or not Sa likod ng mga tagong paghikbi kayamanan kong hapdi Behind all the hidden sobs are my treasures of hardship Panis 'to laging alisto kahit pa si Mephisto tiklop 'pag nag-beast mode na bihis ko But that's nothing, I'm always alert even Mephisto, he'll fold when I go beast mode
Note: Mephisto is a demon in German folklore
[Verse 2: Ken]
No rush I can do this all day (no rush) Twenty-four mentality like Kobe (mamba) The harder I work the harder I play Walang home court sa'kin sasalpak kahit away Here's no home court for me, I'll slam it even if I'm away Heto na nga heto na nga wala nang magdadadada Here it is, here it is, everyone just shut your mouth 'Pag ako ang umangat diretso sigaw baba baba 'Cause when I go up, I immediately say, "D up!" Ako ay galing sa lupa I came straight from the ground Kahit pilitin mong hukayin 'ding-hindi mo makukuha But no matter how hard you try, you can never be me
[Pre-Chorus: Justin]
Yeah I know this isn't over (over) 'Di pa tapos ang disaster (disaster) The disaster hasn't ended yet Alam ko na I'm in danger (danger) I know that I am in danger But I'm betting you sooner magiging better kaya But I'm betting you sooner I'll be better that's why
[Pre-Chorus: Stell]
Alamin ang mga bagay-bagay I will learn as much as I could 'Di pwedeng tambay sa'king bahay My home isn't for doing nothing Lahat ng magtaas ng kilay All raised brows on us Susunugin ng matuto namang magnilay Will be burned until they learn their lesson
Culture note: To burn one's brows is to work or study hard (learn).

2024.05.28 18:10 its_ray_duh Trying to be a better child

Idk what to say since I don’t think I’ve made a post like this, and it’s not something I like to do, but hey, I just hope whoever reads this (especially those who have raised kids) can give me some advice.
Alright, here it goes. I have been doing my postdoc for the past two years, and I’m 23, turning 24 at the end of December. I was a very unhealthy kid, severely underweight, and in and out of hospitals many times when I was 10-12 years old. My mother isn’t very educated; she dropped out of university when she got pregnant with me. My dad was a med student at the time, so of course, being students, they didn’t have any money. My dad had to work part-time to make ends meet since both sets of grandparents kicked them out when they found out. They lived at their friends’ houses separately (my dad at his friend’s and my mom at hers). He took care of us as much as a student with a part-time job could. He visited me three days a week at best. While everything worked out in the end and we are in a much better phase now, growing up, I didn’t get to spend much time with my dad. Whenever I met his friends or college buddies, they always had good things to say about my dad, praising how he excelled in sports and studies, with a closet full of trophies and certificates. They constantly compared me to him, claiming he was better than me at my age and that I should learn from him. This comparison started to piss me off. To top it off, when I asked my dad for help with homework or anything else, he would calmly explain it the first time. But if I dared to ask a second time, he would lose his temper and yell, which made me stop asking him for help. Maybe he had his own problems that he didn’t share with anyone; he never complained about his life but always criticized what we did.
As I got older, my need for his validation grew stronger, and I think I’m still a prisoner to that mentality. Over the years, he started to become more friendly, making small talk, which was completely opposite of how he was when I was growing up. It’s hard for me to change, even though he has. Sometimes, this leads to me not talking to him and just nodding, which makes him mad, but he never says anything. From his perspective, I might seem like the most disappointing child, based on how I act around him. But it’s something he made me into: only speak when spoken to, don’t talk too much, don’t complain, don’t cry over anything, basically the idea that men don’t need to show emotions. Now, when he expects me to talk to him like a friend, I just can’t do it; it’s just not possible. Where have I gone wrong? I’ve always tried to do what he asked and nothing else. I don’t understand how he feels, and I don’t have the courage to ask, which makes me sad. But I’ve never had a problem with my mom. I just want to understand if my dad thinks I’m a failure—is that why he’s trying to be friendly? I really don’t get it, does he think that I would never amount to anything ?, I don’t think I have that emotional maturity that he has to comprehend this, I know I could simply ask him but the act of doing so might set of a chain reaction which I am not sure I want that to happen.

2024.05.28 18:10 backwatered I'm a rising junior at a target APAC school, studying a non-traditional major. How do I break into finance?

I study social science at university - I enjoy it, but I've realized that all of my professional experience has been at non-profits and I don't want to pigeonhole myself at 20. My school is frequently visited by recruiters, and many non-finance students frequently go on to work in finance. I realize these questions are very childish, but what can I do to make sure my profile is attractive to firms for internships in summer 2025?
I did study introductory microeconomics and basic mathematics for finance and business in my first year, but I passed those with terrible grades - had to miss classes due to a family bereavement. Many of my classmates get certifications like Bloomberg's Market Concepts, so I'm eyeing that and virtual experiences on Forage.
Any advice is helpful. Thanks guys

A gang of the most experienced bank robbers is at it again!
This time they have to rob several well-protected vaults guarded by FBI agents and special forces. Use your unique skills to hide from law enforcement officers, hack cameras and ATMs, or break through crowds of civilians, pouring lead on everything.
Your tactics depend only on you!
Liked:
  • + Availability of achievements
  • + Possibility of cooperative play
  • + Ability to play against Bots
  • + Availability of online players and open servers
  • + Steam Workshop support
  • + Statistics and support for global player leaderboards
  • + Localization into several languages, including Russian
  • + Low-Poly graphics
  • + Many character classes on each side with their own weapons and abilities
  • + Availability of voice and text chat to coordinate player actions
  • + Variety of game settings for the game server
  • + Items to the Steam inventory for obtaining certain achievements
  • + Destructible environment
  • + Ability to fly an FPV drone, destroying opponents from the air
Did not like:
  • - Poor machine translation with lots of errors and mistranslated words
  • - Presence of untranslated text
  • - The finale of the “training” level does not end automatically and prompts the player to independently go to the menu to search/create a game server
  • - If the game level “training” is restarted, the game can turn off input for the player, while the world continues to move
  • - Ability to go beyond the game map
  • - In case of going aground, on maps with an open body of water, the player will not be able to return back to land
  • - When launching, the player literally walks on aiwater
  • - Problems with the balance of AI game bots
  • - Civilians do not react to shots/kills/explosions near them
  • - Achievements are issued with a noticeable delay, or all at once - when leaving the game
  • - When spamming the “jump” key is active, players can climb walls
  • - A bug in which the player cannot reappear as an active player after death
  • - The presence of cheaters who can fly around the map/kill with one hit/not receive damage from explosions/shots
  • - Partial destruction allows you to destroy only certain walls
  • - Lack of anti-cheat system
  • - Problem with UE4 optimization on large open maps
  • - Unified military hand skin for all players when playing in first person
Conclusion:
“Perfect Heist 2” is a social game for a large group of players that talks about bank robberies and how to prevent them. It is created for those who love strategy and social deduction.
In the game you will participate in daring robberies, plan each stage step by step and try to avoid collisions with security. Or use your attentiveness to identify robbers among a crowd of civilians and prevent crimes.
The gameplay of “Perfect Heist 2” provides players with a variety of decision-making and strategic planning options. You have to assemble a team of experienced robbers, consisting of bots, friends or random players; choose unique skills for each gang member; Discuss the heist plan via voice or text chat, taking into account various factors such as security, time and possible risks - or you can simply boldly kill everyone left/right for your own benefit.
The graphics in the game are made in the popular modern low-poly format, which gives the game an atmosphere of simplicity and ease. The soundtrack cannot boast of variety or high quality, so the background music is limited to a few music samples that can be continuously repeated. The sounds of gunfire and movement are quite loud, and this does not depend on whether the action takes place outdoors, in a small room, or ventilation.
Unfortunately, “Perfect Heist 2” is intended exclusively for play with live players. Because the game mode with bots is not implemented well enough, since the developers have poorly worked out the balance of the artificial intelligence of opponents. For example, police officers on "easy" difficulty often stand still or run around a building, while on "hard" difficulty the AI instantly identifies living players and shoots them on the spot, even if they have not committed any illegal actions. As for the robbers, their AI remains the same regardless of the selected difficulty, only the frequency of using abilities changes.
Having studied the large number of positive reviews of Perfect Heist 2, you can see that users praise the exciting atmosphere, fun gameplay and the opportunity to develop strategic skills. However, in reality the game turns out to be empty, boring and monotonous.
If you're looking for a game that will give you an adrenaline rush and make you think about every step, then Perfect Heist 2 is not it. It’s not worth wasting time and money on this pass-through project that is trying to increase its popularity with the help of purchased positive reviews. Instead, play Payday 2 again and truly experience the action-packed heists.

2024.05.28 17:54 asianstyleicecream Is there much difference in the 4 editions of “Arborists’ Certification Study Guide”?

I’m looking to learn more about trees, would love to become an arborist eventually but for now I have too many jobs to take on another.
I see that the 1st edition was published in 1991, 2n in 1993, and the 3rd edition published in 1995. And I can’t find it but the 4th edition looks like maybe from 2022?
Is there much change from 3rd edition to the 4th?
There’s a discounted 3rd edition (1995) for $50 whereas the 4th edition is around $140 used.
If I get the 3rd edition/cheaper one, will I be missing out on some crucial information?
Thanks in advance!

2024.05.28 17:46 Fresh-start-101 Did a degree but didn't learn Articulare 360, looking for pointers

Hello everyone, first of all please excuse my english and excuse me if I'm a bit long,
I am 36yo man living in France, I have a 15 career in logistics and 2 years ago I wanted to switch careers and decided on Instructional Design for many reasons. After some research I took a paid leave from my job ot follow a one year intensive degree in ID. I just got my diploma in March but the cavehat is it didn't go as I expected it to.
We learned a lot about learning theory, a little about course creation (really little) and most of the rest was on how to help specifically education centers/training schools (don't know the exact phrasing in english for basically training centers for adults) how to get ISO standards, government certifications and other accreditation processes to obtain state funding and grants for their training courses.
It's really a lot of administrative work and really french-market centric because of our specific adult professionnal training system. It wasn't what I went to ID for.
I really tought we would learn Articulate 360 at some point, as long as some other less major but still important softwares like Camstasia, Photoshop, Audacity, Illustrator and such. But primarly Articulate 360, because it's the software that opens to you the most job offer and especially abroad, as I'd like to relocate in an english speakig country in the future.
Now my questions :
1) What would be the best resources for me to learn articulate 360 as an autodidact ? I have found devlin peck free course on youtube and a course on udemy that is pretty cheap, around 26€, it's this one : https://www.udemy.com/course/create-elearning-courses-with-articulate-storyline-360-or-3/?couponCode=LETSLEARNNOW#reviews
2) In your experience, starting from almost scratch software-wise, what's the best way to build a portfolio ? Should I just create imaginary projects or go on say Fiverr or another platform and sell my services at a very low price ?
3) I am also currently doing another job back in logistics just to pay the bills for now. so it leaves me around 10 to 15 hours a week only to study ID, can I be reasonnably proeficient for say September ?
For information I am proeficient in Clipchamp, Canva, Word, Excel, a little little bit in Illustrator and have some LMS knowledge thanks to the course but it's Talent LMS.
Thanks you for your help, have a good day

2024.05.28 17:42 FatalAppleSauce Advice on education/career plan

Hey everyone,
Sorry if this is a loaded question and a bit unorganized. TLDR at the bottom.
I am 23 years old and have just completed a three-year advanced diploma in computer programming and analysis. During my studies, I completed a four-month co-op as a technical analyst. Prior to this, I spent two years working as a desk-side tech contractor for two major banks, a position I secured through a family connection. Currently, I am looking for jobs in development and IT.
In my spare time, I focus on refining my skills through platforms such as Boot.dev(backend content) and The Odin Project. Although I study The Odin Project to be well-rounded in web development, I don't particularly enjoy the front-end portion.
Instead, I enjoy programming backend and automation projects and learning about security topics(malware analysis and reverse engineering) whenever I can.
Given my background and interests, should I focus on learning and building projects in backend development, automation, and cybersecurity, and drop The Odin Project in favor of something like TryHackMe or Hack The Box, or should I pursue a certification as I don't have any? Additionally, what types of jobs would you recommend I pursue in these areas?
**note** I do intend to pursue a 2 year bachelors in computer science part time once I secure a job.
TL;DR: 23-year-old with advanced diploma in computer programming seeking development/IT jobs. Prefers backend and automation over frontend, interested in cybersecurity, particularly malware analysis and reverse engineering. Considering dropping The Odin Project for TryHackMe or Hack The Box, or pursuing a certification. Seeking advice on job opportunities in backend, automation, and cybersecurity. Plans to pursue part-time bachelor's in computer science while working.
