2024.05.10 05:41 divyankasinghaniya Duty Free Retail Market Opportunities: Growth Status & Regional Forecast to 2032
The global
duty free retail market size was valued at USD 42.65 billion in 2023 and is projected to grow from USD 46.67 billion in 2024 to USD 78.78 billion by 2032, exhibiting a CAGR of 6.76% during the forecast period.. The rising demand for alcohol in several economies especially in Asia owing to increasing spending capacity of middle class people, changing consumer habits, and growing international tourist arrivals has elevated the demand for premium duty free liquor worldwide. Strategic developments and innovations in the sector will further propel duty free alcohol sales, thus aiding market expansion. This information is provided by

Segments: Perfumes Segment to Lead Owing to Availability of Variety of Internationally Reputed Brands As per type, the market is split into perfumes, cosmetics, alcohol, cigarettes, and others. Among these, the perfumes segment captured the largest market share in 2022. Affluent global travelers usually visit retail chains that offer perfumes of internationally reputed brands, including Hugo Boss, Prada, Gucci, Al Haramain Dazzle Intense, Giorgio Armani, Belle, Signature Silver, Signature Rose, and Khulasat Al Oud. They offer several types of perfumes, including Eau De Perfume (EDP), Perfume or De Perfume, Eau De Toilette (EDT), and Eau De Cologne (EDC) in one place, which is contributing to segment growth.
Airports Segment to Capture Significant Share Due to Rising Number of Duty Free Retail Stores According to sales channel, the market is divided into airports, onboard aircraft, seaports, train stations, and others. Among these, the airports segment dominated the global market in 2022. The growing number of international and domestic airports in several economies is attributed to segment expansion. The increasing number of duty free retail stores across airports worldwide will further drive segment growth in the coming years.
Geographically, the market is segregated into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, South America, and the Middle East & Africa.
Report Coverage: The report includes:
- Drivers, restraints, opportunities and threats influencing market dynamics in the coming years.
- List of key market players along with strategic developments undertaken in the past five years.
- Market share, growth rate, and valuation projections for each region and segment.
- Impact of COVID-19 on the global economy.
Drivers and Restraints: Rising Number of Airports in Several Countries to Aid Market Expansion The construction of new airports in several economies and rising investments to expand existing ones will generate many opportunities for market growth. For example, in February 2021, the Airport Authority of India (AAI), an Indian governmental body that operates 125 airports, issued a construction permit worth USD 135.07 million (INR 987 crore) for the first phase of an international airport named âDholeraâ in Gujarat. According to Global Aviation Summit 2019, the Civil Aviation Ministry of India aims to have 190-200 operational airports by 2040 under the âIndian Aviation Vision 2040â. Mumbai and Delhi will each have three international airports, while the top 31 Indian cities will have two operating airports.
On the other hand, fluctuations in currency exchange rates will hinder market augmentation in the forthcoming years.
Ask for Customization: https://www.fortunebusinessinsights.com/enquiry/ask-for-customization/duty-free-retail-market-106652 Regional Insights: Asia Pacific to Capture Significant Share Stoked by Innovative Product Launches Asia Pacific held majority of the duty free retail market share in 2022 backed by strategic developments in Asian economies, which will facilitate the launch of innovative products in the region. For example, in its master plan dated June 1st, 2020, Chinaâs central government announced various policies aimed at establishing the Hainan Free Trade Port (Hainan FTP) on the countryâs southern coast. The government also announced its plan to make Hainan FTP an internationally renowned free trade port by 2050. This strategic move will elevate the expansion of domestic retail chains that offer a wide variety of retail products in the coming years.
Meanwhile, the Europe market is slated to grow substantially over the forecast period due to rising expenditure on luxury goods by tourists. After the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, airports in European countries have taken measures to attract tourists/passengers to retail stores that are duty free. This, in turn, will boost sales and aid regional market expansion.
The North America market is driven by travel spending in the U.S. and the growing number of tourists. Canada is one of the key contributors to the North America market. According to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), duty free stores operate in approximately 53 locations across Canada, including land border locations and international airports.
Competitive Landscape: Launch of New Duty Free Stores by New Entrants and Existing Players to Drive Market Proliferation Industry leaders are launching new duty free retail stores or investing funds in expanding existing ones to strengthen their position in the global market. For instance, in June 2022, Mumbai Travel Retail Pvt Ltd. ((MTRPL), an Indian private travel retailer, unveiled its new outlet at the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport in Kerala, India. The new store is a part of the company's Duty Free (TDF) stores covering approximately 2,450 sq ft. These travel retail stores offer a broad spectrum of products, from branded perfumes, travel accessories to imported confectionery. This strategic move opens up new business opportunities for prospective travel retail operators across Indian states, including Kerala and Karnataka.
Key Industry Development: January 2023: Foreo, a Sweden-based connected beauty brand, launched a new store in Manila, Philippines, in collaboration with Duty Free Philippines. The new store (Luxe Duty Free) contributed to Duty Free Philippines' expansion strategies within the country.

2024.05.06 22:15 No_Dark9371 Deviant: Prelude, Act IV
V was completely and utterly awe-struck by the sheer number of exotic cars parked in the garage as the lights came on one after the other. Rolls Royce, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Aston Martins. They all clamored out of the Bentley, V taking slightly longer due to the Brit-Pole being more focused on the absolutely stunning cars in the garage instead of getting out of the car.
âCars caught your eye, huh?â J asked, her voice lacking that taunting edge she had while she spoke with N, who was already making his way across the ceramic floor and out the garage door, into the manor without as much as a word. Jâs Austrian-accented words were laced with genuineness, as she chuckled slightly. âYouâll get used to it.â
So the group made their way out of the garage and into the manor, and holy shit was this place huge.
The interior itself was something to marvel at on its own. The sleek lines, minimalist design elements, , it was a perfect mix of sophistication and sleekness. V was utterly starstruck at the glitz and glamor of it all. It was like stepping into a world that seemed all closed off just yesterday, something she could only glance at through YouTube videos and vlogs. A silver chandelier hung from a double-height ceiling. Two staircases akin to that of the Titanicâs grand staircase swept upwards to the upper floors. The glass railings shimmered under the chandelierâs light, and the marble floor below could damn well have been one gigantic mirror.
Under the right staircase, V caught a slight glimpse of a floor-to-ceiling window that allowed for a breathtaking view of the cityscape right before the sounds of footsteps filled the air. N and J both seemed to stop exchanging death glares and immediately turn their optics to the middle-aged woman slowly walking down the staircase, her eyes surveying every person there.
âJames,â She began, her voice eerily soft and honeyed. The driverâs head raised up to meet the womanâs, a weary expression on his face as he mumbled a slight âYeah, Louisa?â He walked over to the nearby coat hanger, taking off his coat and neatly hanging it before shuffling up the steps towards the bedrooms without waiting for a reply. The womanâs gaze fell to V, and the Brit saw Tessaâs expression go from a moderately jovial one to that of pity. She had far too much makeup on, particularly that of eyelash makeup, and she had noticeable bags under her eyes. She was gothically dressed in an all-black dress and hat.
âRather.... Stylish home clothes.â V thought to herself.
Her eyes sharpened and narrowed, and her expression changed from one of neutrality, to one befitting of a rich woman's anger. Her face contorted in anger as she stared V down, before tearing her gaze away and fixating it on Tessa.
âTessa James Elliot.â Louisaâs grip on the rail tightened as she loudly stated Tessa's name. Her voice did not raise nor lower, but the anger evident in her words made even N wince. J, however, was frozen in place, daring not to move a muscle. âN, J. You were supposed to pick up our cargo, and leave. Instead, along with our ordered cargo, you bring in another drone. How many times must I stress this to you three?â
She took one step down.
âWe,â
Another step. V glanced over to N, who was now noticeably tense.
âAre,â
Another.
âNo charity. We are not a homeless shelter. We are a prestigious family of humans that produce weaponry, and various other sciences for human use.â She said, emphasizing the word human while glaring at the three drones, as if they had never truly belonged. âAs for you, Tessa,â
She descended the steps, walking past the three drones and towards the taken aback human. V turned around slightly, curiosity getting the better of her as she looked on. Louisa towered over Tessa, and she bent down to whisper something in Tessa's ear that made her freeze. J glared at the back of Louisaâs head, her fist clenched. N, on the other hand, quickly and quietly sneaked up the stairs, eager not to get caught up in what was happening.
âFuckin' hell, she's tall.â V thought, inwardly laughing at her height. She must've been at least 5â11, and most of the doorways she had seen were low. Her child mind immediately went to work, drawing up countless instances of the woman bumping her head on low doorways.
She slowly slinked around Tessa with the deadly grace of a cobra, before strutting off into one of the rooms. Tessa lost her tense form, breathing a sigh of relief, though she looked incredibly shaken. J relaxed, looking at Tessa with a hint of solemnity.
âYou okay?â She asked, quickly rushing to the human's side. Jâs voice was laced with concern as she rubbed her friendâs back as the smell of cannabis and tobacco filled the air, and Tupacâs faint rapping coming from upstairs. J told Tessa something V couldnât hear, but the overwhelming stench caused V to cover her face with her sweater as best she could. N growled in annoyance, looking over to V and gesturing upstairs. âYeah, thatâs Cyn. Youâll meet âer later. Sheâs a smoker, youâll get used to the smell.â
âI could really go for a drink right now.â N mumbled, rubbing his temples and walking up the stairs, leaving V completely shocked at his words. He looked like he could be at least her age, and he was mumbling about wanting to drink alcohol?! V shook her head, trying to push that thought away. He could've meant anything by saying drink.
âDon't overthink this, V.â Taking two breaths, and rolling her shoulders in a vain attempt to calm herself down, and trying her best to ignore the frankly nauseating stench of cannabis that clung to her clothes as she walked away, wandering the house in an attempt to get familiar with her new home.
âWe can talk about this over a drink, right?â J said, her voice soothing and below a whisper as she continued to rub Tessaâs back. Beading tears in Tessaâs eyes threatened to spill over before she quickly wiped them away. Tessa took two quick, sharp breaths before she relaxed and shook her head.
âGotta check on Cyn. Make sure she isn't too high.â Tessa broke into a short but hollow chuckle before lightly pushing past J and proceeding up the stairs. The more steps Tessa trudged up, the louder the music was. The music itself wasn't abrasively loud, but it was very noticeable. Cyn must've turned up the music after Louisa left. Not that she would've cared that Louisa was upstairs in the first place. Cyn had a track record of being one of those no-fucks-given type of people, and it was probably the reason why Tessa and Cyn got along so well.
The closer Tessa got to her room, the more of the song she could hear. It wasn't obnoxiously loud, not yet at least. But the overwhelming smell of cannabis made her cover her nose in her sleeve and almost gag. Jesus, how much did Cyn smoke?! This is overdoing it, even for her. Trying to wave away the smell, she proceeded forward, suppressing another gag.
The feds is watchin', they all plottin' to get me, will I survive? Will I die? C'mon, let's picture the possibilities, givin' me charges, lawyers makin' a grip, I told the judge I was raised wrong and that's why I blaze shit. Was hyper as a kid, cold as a teenager, On my mobile, callin' big shots on the scene major, packin' hundreds in my drawers, fuck the lawâŚ
Tessa knocked on the walnut door twice, trying in vain to suppress another gag. âOi, Cyn.â The music seemed to grow louder the moment Tessa called her name. And accompanying that, the Aussie girl could barely hear a muffled groan of irritation.
Say money bring bitches, bitches bring lies, one fucker gettin' jealous and motherfuckers died, depend on me like the first and fifteenth, they might hold me for a second, but these punks won't get me. We got foâ brothasâ, in low riders, in ski masks, screamin' âThug Lifeâ every time they pass, all eyes on meâŚ
Rolling her eyes and sighing in annoyance, Tessa opened the door slightly. To the left was Cyn, sitting on the plush bed, a cigarette trapped between her fingers. Her optics were hollowed, and she slightly waved back and forth, a sign that she was most likely as high as a kite. The various other high quality furnishings were clean and kept in an orderly manner, a stark contrast to Cynâs incredibly messy bed.
Relax and take notes, while I take tokes of the marijuana smoke, throw you in a chokeâgunsmoke, gunsmoke! Biggie Smalls for mayor, the rap slayer, the hooker layer, motherfucker, say your prayers! Hail Mary, full of grace, smack the bitch in the face, take her Gucci bag and the North Face off her back, jab her if she act, funny with the money oh, you got me mistaken, honeyâŚ
Cyn's neon yellow eyes met Tessa's brown orbs, the drone quirking an eyebrow as she took another drag. âHm?â Cyn slightly shifted in the hoodie she was wearing, exhaling the smoke into the already smoke-filled room. The edge of one of Cynâs twin tails peeked out of the hood she was wearing. It nested comfortably in her neck, slightly drooping down to her upper chest. It had a slight braid to it, akin to what a Jedi Padawan would sport. Tessa sighed and dramatically rolled her eyes in a mix of irritation and a growing sense of concern.
âHow many fingers am I holding up?â
âSix.â
âOkay, now how many?â
âEight.â
âOkay, you're not overly stoned.â Tessa muttered, stepping into the room and sitting down with Cyn. The stench of weed clung to her clothes, the bedsheets, and the music player next to the large mirror on the dresser. âYou got a spare orâŚ?â
âNo. This is my last one. J smoked off most of them, being the consistent smoker that she is. Unless you are keen on sharing saliva, you are out of luck, Tessa.â She said, expecting a refusal from the Aussie girl. Her hollowed-out neon-yellow ovals distorted slightly as she once again took another drag, almost disappearing entirely before stabilizing. And like the drone had expected, Tessa shook her head in reply, not making any eye contact with her drone friend.
âI swear, you two are going to kill yourselves someday. Either the cancer sticksâll send you down six feet, or yaâll both will piss someone off while youâre as high as a kite, and you both get killed. Wouldnât put the second one past J, though. You?â Tessaâs brown eyes met Cynâs hollowed-out neon yellow optics as the question hung in the air for what seemed like a century.
âYeah. She can be⌠Too direct at times.â Cyn replied, her gaze falling down to her legs dangling off of the edge of the bed, lost in thought. Her face changed from one of weed-induced relaxation to a more pained expression, though the expression quickly faded away, replaced by a forced smirk. âIâŚ.â She paused, as if to gather her thoughts. âWell, N keeps her in check. I doubt he would care if J expires one day.â
âIâm surprised you can speak this normally.â Tessa quipped, laying back on the bed, the smell of weed clinging to her whole body. Cyn, on the other hand, remained on the edge of the bed, taking another drag before flicking the cig away.
âFuck that sâposed to mean?â The drone replied, shooting a playful side eye glare toward the human, who only shrugged in response, letting her hood fall back, revealing the rest of her silver twin tails. They were much slimmer than Jâs, and they lacked the curls that the Austrian had, setting the two apart. âIt is whatâcha make of it, mate.â
The sound of two cars screeching to a halt in front of their home made both ladies look to the open window from the bed. The first one was a â54 Impala, Tessa knew the car by the sound of its engine, as she had heard it far too many times to count. It had to be an Impala. Hell, it was the generic gangster vehicle. What the hell were they doing here, though? Normally, they'd be out in the city shooting some poor bastard dead because they didn't pay on time, or holding up a rich kid that went off too far. The drill rap playing on the radio of the Impala loud enough for Cyn and Tessa to hear faintly. The other was a â57 BMW i4, the soft hum of its electric motor being overtaken by the rumble of the Impalaâs engine. Their headlights lit up a portion of the road as they rolled down towards the house.
âTessa,â Cyn said, her monotone and usually emotionless voice laced with a concern Tessa never knew she could display as she snapped her fingers at the Aussie twice, making the teen straighten up quicker than sheâd ever done, concern written all over her face. âDo you have a weapon by any chance? A ranged one, preferably?â
âN-no, why?â She replied, her voice growing more and more concerned. The headlights of the cars once again glowed to life as they began to move, circling around the house like vultures surveying their prey. Cyn jumped off the edge of the bed with a quickness that could only be compared to a child trying to avoid a belting, straightening herself up as best she could from her usual slouched position. Tessa could tell that it probably hurt like hell, given the occasional wince and twitch of Cyn's optics, but she fought through it, like she always had. It was the only thing she knew how to do anyways: Fight, fight, fight. Hard to break offaâ something one grows up doing.
âHell,â Tessa drawled, trying to suppress another gag by covering her mouth with her sleeve, despite the noise still escaping her lips. âThis weed smellâs killing me. You sure you're not just high off your ass and seeinâ things? Last time you got this high, you held up one of the rich kids on our block while he was on a late-night drive. If your nerves need this much steadyingâŚâ Tessa trailed off after she neared to the edge of the bed, and heard the rumble of the car engine slowly fading away.
The cool air almost calmed N and steadied his frayed nerves as he stepped into the dark cellar, flipping on the lights as the smell of various liquors filled the air. N stopped a moment to roll his shoulders, closing his optics and letting the combined sensations of the cold air and the smell of liquor wash over him before he continued.
N brushed his hand on a wooden pillar next to the open doorway before walking over to a neat set of brandy elegantly positioned on the various barrels full of liquors, he casually took one of the bottles of Hennessy from the set, pulling off the cork with no effort. The smell wafted out of the open bottle, flooding into Nâs sensory receptors. It was a welcome smell, and one that N had grown accustomed to smelling, even though it gave him a burning feeling if he were to stick his head down to the top of the bottle. N took a swig, gulping down the brownish liquid without as much as a hitch. The phantom taste of vanilla and oak lingered on his tongue as he once again took another swig. He stuffed his hand in his pocket, brushing against a hand-rolled cigarette. A small smirk crosses his face.
âWell, someone's been trinken ihr Leben weg.â (Well, someone's been drinking their life away.) A voice N knew all too well echoed off the quiet walls of the cellar, and instantly wiped that smirk away. N once again gulped down the brown liquid before turning to the pigtailed drone leaning on the very wooden pillar beside the doorway, a smug smirk on her face as she watched the Canadian put the cork back on the drink and put it back as neatly as possible.
They made eye contact. âWhat do you want?â He asked, his tone exasperated and almost resigned as J just lightly chuckled in response. N raised an eyebrow, irritation written all over him as the Austrian continued. âHow many times have I caught you drinking? Ten? Nineteen? No, forty times over?â Nâs eyes narrowed as she cockily listed the times she had caught him drinking. âAn eleven year old really shouldn't be drinking, much less a drone. What would that say about them? Gott weiĂ, Louisa wĂźrde doch nicht wollen, dass ein Straftäter im Haus herumläuft, oder? You know the risks, N. And we got a newbie runnin' around. Feel bad for her. We found 'er at a cargo ship, so she probably got sold off. Poor girl." J's tone changed from a cocky one to a more somber one as she tore her gaze away from N, instead finding the concrete very interesting. An almost pained look crosses her features for a moment, but before N could get a glimpse of it, it was wiped away.
(God knows Louisa wouldn't want a delinquent running around the house, now would she?)
âDon't you try to baby me, J.â Now it was Jâs turn to bear an irritated expression, as her optics snapped back to meet N's. âDo I have to bring up all of the times I've caught you smoking half the world's supply of weed? Or the times where you've come home pockets lined after wiping some poor bastardâs nose for their valuables, so you can stock them up in your room like fucking trophies? You're not as innocent and impenetrable as you think you are, J.â
Jâs only response was a dead silence and a death glare. N only sneered in response. âWhat's the matter? Got nothinâ to say? No snappy comeback?â
âShe's going to know you've gone and downed some again. I mean, look at the thing, it's already at half.â She said, gesturing to the bottle, which was now at half. âShe's never caught me smoking once in my life, and I'm her favorite child by far. Who will she believe? Me, or you? After all, you have the largest track record of drinking your pains away second only to Cyn.â She continued, rummaging through her pockets for her cigarette.
N held up a hand-rolled cigarette, a wry grin on his face as he presented it to the shocked drone. âMissing something?â He said in a condescending voice, watching as Jâs expression morphed from a slightly irritated one to one of pure shock. âI wonder what Lousiaâll think if she finds this in your room. Nobody here's that much of a perfectionist to hand-roll a cigarette, besides a certain girl standing right in front-aâ me.â
The sound of tires on pavement broke their little spat.
Author's Ramblings: SIBLING FIGHT!!!!
I AM SO SORRY! I WAS SO LATE ON THIS! SCHOOL, AND OTHER STUFF HAMPERED ME FROM PUSHING THIS OUT ON TIME! I AM SO, SO FUCKING SORRY! I'll try to post more often, but until then, I'll catch ya'll later.

2024.04.04 23:47 capritora The importance and beauty of Henry and Francis' relationship (with quotes from the book) (SPOILERS WARNING!!!)
I have finished my third re-reading of The Secret History and, as promised, I am making a long post about the relationship between Henry and Francis - the most interesting and beautiful relationship for me.
I was surprised to realize that other readers don't talk about them much and don't give their relationship as much importance as I do, but I still hope someone will find it interesting to read.
In any case, remember that these are just my opinions and my views, and I would be glad if anyone would share their opinions on these two characters and their dynamics)
(I'll try to include page numbers for quotes, but it's worth pointing out that I'm reading Donna Tartt in paper and in translation in my native language, and I'm getting quotes and pages from the eBook version, so maybe some pages may not be the same. Also English is not my native language, so I apologize if there are any mistakes here)
Perhaps itâs worth starting with what catches your eye first - Francis and Henry were the same age, and the oldest in the group:
- "'Twenty-four?' I said, started. The twins and I were twenty years old, and Henry and Francis were twenty-one.â (page 340)
Although there was no age hierarchy in the group and, in general, the age of the characters was not so important, this seemingly small detail can be read quite well in the behavior of Henry and Francis, who throughout the book always, sometimes not on purpose, take on leading roles and take care of the rest:
- âBoth Francis and Henry offered to drive me home...â (page 73);
- "'Francis, run get the first-aid kit out of your car. We'll meet you halfway.'
'All right,' said Francis, glad to be told what to do, and started splashing for the bank." (page 104); - âThe handwritten was Henry's: TWA 219 795 X 4
A telephone number with a 617 area code had been added in Francis's hand, at the bottom." (page 152) - a small hint that it was Henry and Francis who were involved in an important part of the escape plan;
- âWhich is where Francis came in. He and his mother live off the income of a trust...", "I had some things to do myself, but not many, and Francis had assured me that getting the money was a simple matter of going downtown and signing some papers" (pages 171-172) - again an indication that the basis of the escape plan was handled by Henry and Francis;
- âThe twins and I were to split up and walk home â me to campus, the twins to their apartment â while Henry and Francis took care of the car.â (page 296);
- "Henry and I sat on the radiator all night and talked to Mr Corcoran." (page 354);
- "...we were shocked when Henry, in Connecticut, got us word that one was in progress, by slipping away from the Corcorans' house one afternoon to call Francis from a pay phone..." (page 407) - again, we see that at a tense moment, when everyone was worried about the results of autopsy, Henry contacted Francis to report to him the news from the Corcoran house.
In general, the characters of Henry and Francis always seemed the most caring and concerned among the others to me, and there are many moments in the book where their care is shown separately, but it's worth noting that all the most important issues Henry and Francis always resolved together, which shows that they were not only close, but also trusted each other very much.
One of my favorite things about their dynamic is how different their personalities are, but how well they complement each other and it seems like it couldn't be a more perfect combination. Throughout the book, Henry appears to us as a cool, collected, calculating and calm person, while Francis is constantly nervous and panicky, and sometimes cannot be serious when necessary, so Henry always brings Francis to his senses, which is quite funny and cute (also an interesting note, that it's Henry who most often tries to calm Francis down in nervous situations):
- ÂŤFrancis squeezed his eyes tight shut, then reopened them. He had got very white, his pallor dry and talcumy as a chalk drawing on rough paper. For a moment I wondered if he might faint.
'It's all right,' said Henry. Francis didn't move. 'Really, Francis,' Henry said, a trifle peevishly, 'it's all right. Sit down.'Âť (page 184); - ÂŤFor one horrible instant I thought that Francis was going to laugh aloud but somehow he managed to turn it into a theatrical battery of coughs, hiding his face behind his hand. With barely a glance Henry slapped him, hard, on the back.Âť (page 326);
- ÂŤ'Maybe something went wrong,' Francis said.
'Don't be ridiculous. What could go wrong?' 'A million things. Maybe Charles lost his head or something.' Henry gave him a fishy look. 'Calm down,' he said. 'I don't know where you get all these Dostoyevsky sorts of ideas.'Âť (page 329); - ÂŤFrancis gaped at him. Henry caught him by the sleeve and pulled him away.Âť (page 347);
- ÂŤHenry started. 'Oh,' he said. 'Good morning.'
'How can you even say that? I haven't had a wink of sleep. I haven't eaten anything in about three days.' Henry marked his place with a ribbon and slipped the book in his breast pocket. 'Well,'he said amiably, 'go get a doughnut, then.' 'I don't have any money.' 'I'll give you the money, then.' 'I don't want a goddamn doughnut.Âť (page 357) What I find even more fascinating is that Francis was the only one (besides Bunny, but there were other factors at play) who wasn't afraid to contradict and tell Henry 'no'. As we know, Charles was afraid of Henry, Camilla loved him (which already affects her perception of Henry), Richard admired him and tried to please him. Francis really saw Henry as his friend, with whom he could grumble or argue in a friendly manner and not be afraid that Henry would take it the wrong way, which once again proves that they were in fact very close:
- ÂŤHenry and Francis argued interminably about how far apart the soldiers in a Roman legion had stood: shoulder to shoulder (as Francis said) or (as Henry maintained) three or four feet apart. This led into an even longer argument â hard to follow and, to me, intensely boring â about whether Hesiod's primordial Chaos was simply empty space or chaos in the modern sense of the word.Âť (page 73);
- "Henry and Francis were further out: Francis talking, gesticulating wildly in his white robe and Henry with his hands clasped behind his back, Satan listening patiently to the rantings of some desert prophet." (page 103);
- ÂŤ'- thinking about? My God, but he's in a state. You can't tell me you know what he might '
There was a low murmur now, Henry's voice, then Francis's voice came back to me again. 'I don't care,' he said hotly. 'Jesus, but you've done it now. I've been in town two hours and already â I don't care.' He said in reply to another murmur from Henry. 'Besides, it's a bit late for that, isn't it?' Silence. Then Henry began to talk, too indistinctly for me to hear. 'You don't like it? You?' said Francis. 'What about me?' His voice dropped suddenly and then resumed, too quietly for me to hear.Âť (page 143); - ÂŤ'I've never seen anybody like you for answering a phone,' said Henry. 'Even in somebody else's house.'
'Well, what am I supposed to do? Just let it ring?...Âť (page 195); - ÂŤ'I want to sleep,' he said, with a melodramatic roll of his eye, ' "dormir plutot que vivre"!'
' "Clans un sommeil aussi doux que la manâŚ'" said Henry with a smile. 'Jesus, Henry, you know everything,' said Francis, 'you make me sick.' He turned unsteadily, loosening his tie as he did it, and swayed out of the room. 'I believe he is rather drunk,' said Henry, as a door slammed somewhere and we heard taps running furiously in the bathroom.Âť (page 211); - ÂŤ'I'm going to dig up a couple of ferns. Then we can leave.'
'Oh, let's just forget about it,' said Francis, lighting a cigarette and tossing away the match. 'Nobody's going to see us.'Âť (page 287); - ÂŤFrancis rolled down his window and craned his head outside to see. 'Oh, Jesus,' I heard him say. 'Stop the car. There's no way we're going to '
'We're not stuck.' 'Yes we are. You're making it worse. Christ, Henry. Stop the' 'Shut up,' Henry said.Âť (page 295); - ÂŤ'Why the hell haven't you paid those parking tickets?' Henry whispered to him.
'Leave me alone.'Âť (page 347); - ÂŤI could hear Henry talking indistinctly. After a moment, Francis's sleepy eyes widened.
'Oh, no,' he said. 'Not me.' Henry's voice again, curt and businesslike. 'No. I mean it, Henry. I'm tired and I'm going to sleep and there's no way-' Suddenly, his face changed. To my great surprise he cursed loudly and slammed down the receiver so hard that it jangled. 'What is it?' He was staring at the phone. 'God damn him,' he said. 'He hung up on me' <...>
'It started an hour ago, so he says. Damn him. Doesn't he ever sleep?'Âť (pages 355-356); - ÂŤ'I hate Gucci,' said Francis.
'Do you?' said Henry, glancing up from his reverie. 'Really? I think it's rather grand.' 'Come on, Henry.' 'Well, it's so expensive, but it's so ugly too, isn't it? I think they make it ugly on purpose. And yet people buy it out of sheer perversity.' 'I don't see what you think is grand about that.' 'Anything is grand if it's done on a large enough scale,' said Henry.Âť (page 370); - ÂŤ'Here,' he said. 'Give Charles my love. Will you buy some flowers for him or something?'
I looked at the bill, momentarily stunned. Francis snatched it from me and pushed it back at him. 'Come on, Henry,' he said, with an anger that surprised me. 'Stop it.' 'I want you to have it.' 'Right. We're supposed to get him a hundred dollars' worth of flowers.' 'Don't forget to stop at the package store,' said Henry coldly. 'Do what you like with the rest of the money. Just give him the change, if you want. I don't care.'Âť (page 514) But even more important than their bickering are the moments of their worry for each other (mainly Francis for Henry). Also in this category I would include those moments in which Francis never stopped doubting Henry and always believed in him. He always knew and understood when Henry couldnât cope and he needed to be worried about, and when Henry could cope and there was no need to worry â all this moments are also important and conveys the fact that they were quite close:
'I wouldn't waste my time worrying about him.'" (page 342); - âAfter he'd gone Francis turned to Henry, a bemused look on his face. 'What on earth are you up to?' he said.
But Henry didn't answer." (page 358); 'Haven't you seen him yet?' 'I saw him. I didn't talk to him.' She paused to blow out a cloud of smoke. 'How does he seem to you?' 'I've seen him looking better. Why?' 'Because he's sick. Those headaches.' 'One of the bad ones?' 'That's what he says.' Francis looked at her in disbelief. 'How is he up and walking around, then?' 'I don't know. He's all doped up. He has his pills and he's been taking them for days.' 'Well, where is he now? Why isn't he in bed?' 'I don't know. Mrs Corcoran just sent him down to the Cumberland Farms to get that damn baby a quart of milk.' 'Can he drive?'" (pages 421-422); - âHenry lit a cigarette. 'I'm not going back,' he said. <...>
'But Henry,' said Francis, 'you've got to go.' He was smoking the cigarette with tight-lipped, resolute drags. 'No, I don't,' he said. 'Two weeks. That's it.' <...>
'Henry, if you don't go you'll fail,' said Francis. 'I don't care.'â (page 557). Perhaps one of the main reasons why there is no emphasis placed on the relationship between Henry and Francis is because we only know the whole story from Richardâs pov, and as we know, not only is Richard not a reliable narrator, he's also not entirely observant, so the relationship between Henry and Francis is automatically relegated to the background, since Richard himself was less concerned about them, but this doesn't mean that Henry and Francis were not close, because even in Richardâs words very often there is some mention of Henry and Francis being together at certain points. These, by the way, are one of my favorites moments and I soon began to consider it a nice habit - the way Henry and Francis often visited each other during Richard's phone calls, or asked to call each other to the phone, these are some of the best moments that Richard notes and which, thanks to this, readers can see:
- âI went downstairs to the pay phone and dialed Francis's number.
He answered on the first ring. 'Hi,' he said, when I told him it was me. 'What is it?' 'Nothing.' 'Are you sure?' I heard Henry murmuring in the background. Francis, his mouth away from the receiver, said something that I couldn't catch. 'What are you guys doing?' I said. 'Not much. Having a drink. Hold on a second, would you?' he said, in response to another murmur. There was a pause, an indistinct exchange, and then Henry's brisk voice came on the line. 'What's the matter? <...> 'That's not a good idea. I was just leaving when you called.â (pages 298-299); - "I woke, with a start, to find Henry and Francis standing over me. <...>
Henry sighed. It was cold inside the car, and his breath came out white. 'Something's up,' he said. 'Francis and I saw Marion at the guard booth with Cloke Rayburn. They were talking to some people from Security.'" (page 321); - âHe was running the water and I was on my way out when the phone rang.
It was Henry. 'Oh,' he said. 'I'm sorry. I thought I dialed Francis.' 'You did. Hold on a second.' I put down the phone and called for him. He came in in his trousers and undershirt, his face half-lathered, a razor in his hand. 'Who is it?' 'Henry.' 'Tell him I'm in the bath.' 'He's in the bath,' I said. 'He is not in the bath,' said Henry. 'He is standing in the room with you. I can hear him.' I gave Francis the telephone" (page 355); - âFrancis wasn't home. I decided to try Henry. To my surprise it was Francis, not Henry, who answered the phone.
'Francis? What are you doing over there?' I said. 'Oh, hello, Richard,' said Francis. He said it in a stagy way, as if for Henry's benefit. 'I guess you can't really talk now.' 'No.' <...> Francis put his hand over the receiver. I could hear a muffled discussion. In a moment Henry came on the line. 'Hello, Richard,' he said. 'What's the matter?' I had to explain all over again." (page 506); It was Henry. 'So there you are,' he said. 'Yes.' There was a long, crackly silence. At last he said: 'May I speak to Francis?'â (page 565) Throughout the book, we see, albeit seemingly insignificant, moments that prove that Henry and Francis communicated often and a lot, and not only on the topic of murder. In their conversations there was always something personal and purely theirs, something that they were unlikely to discuss with anyone else. Some of my favorite moments were Francis's little comments as he and Henry told Richard about the night of the bacchanal, and afterwards about Bunny's behavior - the way he kept reminding and asking Henry to talk about this or that moment could speak of the fact that Henry not only shared absolutely every detail with Francis, but Francis also listened carefully and remembered all these stories. Also in this block I would include those moments when Henry and Francis seemed to communicate without words at all, which is impossible to do without complete understanding and trust between people, here are those very hints and âbigâ little moments:
- "'He knew,' said Henry. 'I told you so.'â (page 184) â they discussed this in private earlier;
- "'Tell him about the ice cream.'" (page 191);
- "'Remember what Bunny said?'
Henry laughed. 'Yes,' he said. 'Tell him.'" (page 193); - "'And you gave him money for clothes and all those useless Italian books.'
'Yes. âAll in all it was a significant outlay of money but it seemed like a good investmentâ (page 200); - "'Tell him about those things Bunny bought with your credit cards while you were sick.'" (page 206);
- "'He's blackmailing you?'
Henry and Francis looked at earh others. 'Well, not exactly,' said Francis." (page 208); - âHenry didn't answer. 'What are you doing here?' he said in a very annoyed tone of voice. <...>
'A party. He's there now.' I'm paused. 'He's not going to come.' 'See, I told you,' said Francis, aggrieved, stepping gingerly from the brush and wiping his hands." (page 286); - "'He told Henry, not me.' I'm afraid I don't know the details." (page 486) â Bunny told Henry about the twins, but Henry still told Francis about it later;
- âI mean, I'm an only child, so is Henry, what do we know about such things? We used to talk about what fun it would be to have a sister.'â (page 487) â one of my favorite moments between Francis and Henry. Here we see a small piece of how Francis and Henry's evenings might have gone and that they talked about topics that were important to both of them.
- âI've seen her do it. And the same with Henry. He used to be crazy about her, I'm sure you know that; for all I know he still is.â (page 489) - it's a very important point. This is the first moment in the book where we are clearly told that Henry has feelings for Camilla. Before this, we only had assumptions from Richard, but Francis clearly confirms this, which means that Henry talked to him on this topic (it's worth noting that throughout the entire book, Henry never talked to anyone about his feelings, at least to his readers this is not reported). A very interesting moment that can be missed because attention is not focused on it.
- âFrancis had been pacing in the hall outside, prowling restlessly back and forth like a cat. During this exchange he paused in the door. Now I saw him dart a quick glance worried at Henry.â (page 512)
But even this is not the end of Henry and Francisâ communication. I couldnât classify the following moments into any block, but it seems to me that they're the most interesting and definitely one of the most significant.
â Let's start with my favorite moment - Henry moving in with Francis. Although Henryâs official reason for moving was the mess in his home, it seems to me that this was more of an excuse for Richard than the truth. As we know, Henry had at his disposal the largest sums of money from the entire company and with a strong desire, he could quickly find a good cleaning service that would quickly put his apartment in order, but as we know, Henry lived with Francis for much more than one day.
This might be a headcanon, but I always liked to think that Henry just didn't want to be alone at that moment.
The move happened just after the murder of a farmer and an unsuccessful escape attempt. Only four people knew about all this, and if Camilla and Charles had each other, then Henry and Francis were left alone, and it's quite logical that they decided to seek comfort and support in each other. In addition, from the examples that I gave earlier, it becomes clear that they were comfortable in each otherâs company, they were close (as I always said, for me Henry and Francis were the closest of the whole company), they trusted each other and could rely on each other, so this temporary proximity was obviously not forced. They felt good together and therefore this moment will forever remain one of the most beautiful and important for me.
â This moment also vaguely reminds me of another, albeit smaller, but quite sweet and significant moment - how Henry allowed Francis to sleep in his bed after killing the farmer. We all know that Henry valued his privacy very much and was quite neat and tidy, while Francis was not so obsessed with this, however, as we find out from Francis's story, he went to Henry's room himself, without even asking permission, and Henry didn't say anything to him about this, and this also shows exactly how close they were and what kind of trusting relationship they had.
â Then we smoothly move on to the next moment - causeless (for the readers and Richard) laughter during their story about the bacchanal. We see that Richard himself didn't understand the reason for their laughter and was surprised at their cheerful mood, and then, when he tried to find out what was so funny, both Henry and Francis didn't want to tell him the reason for their laughter, which is actually quite funny in the context of the fact that they had just revealed to him in every detail the cold-blooded murder they committed the other day, but they decided to leave the reason for their laughter a secret. For me personally, this moment definitely marked another confirmation of their closeness - they probably had their own personal reasons for laughing, and they were not going to include Richard in this at all, because it was something only for the two of them, like many other things which they shared.
â The next not entirely significant, but rather nice moment can be seen on pages 219-220, where Henry helps Francis with his Greek assignment. I won't emphasize this point too much, since we know that Henry helped not only Francis with tasks, but also Richard and probably others, but I just think this mention is cute and entertaining in its own way.
â The next rather interesting moment I noticed only during my third re-read of the book and it's on pages 222-223, where Henry takes the others to look at a house in Hoosatonic that he had been eyeing, but later we find out that for some reason Francis knows this territory best.
From Richard's story we know that Francis loved to go shopping and, in general, if he had a car, it's obvious that Francis could get to absolutely any place, however, from the description of this place, we understand that there is practically nothing there except mountains, a forest and a run-down cafe , where they end up coming for dinner. So what could Francis be doing in the area that makes him know it best? Personally, I like to think that Henry was not alone in this place, but with Francis, which is why Francis had an idea of the area and knew it better than anyone else. However, these are just my thoughts on this matter, and since we don't have reliable information, we can only guess about Francisâ strange knowledge.
â The following point may slightly reinforce my previous statement:
- "'Henry,' said Francis. I was started to see that his face had all of a sudden got very white.
Henry reached in his pocket for a cigarette. 'Yes,' he said tersely. 'I see.' 'What's the matter?' I said. Henry tamped the cigarette down on the side of the pack. He didn't take his eyes from the screen. 'That man,' he said, 'fixes my car.'" (page 350) Francis recognized Hundy as soon as he was shown on TV, and most importantly, we later understand that Charles and Camilla, and even more so Richard, had no idea who this man was:
- "'Do you know this man?' said Charles.
'I've taken my car to him for the last two years.'â (page 351) Since only Henry and Francis had cars, it's likely that they could repair them together, however, what is interesting is that Hundy only worked on Henryâs car, so, again, I personally like to think that Francis often kept Henry company in various trips.
â I can also call the next moment quite nice:
- âHe had also bought a gift for Henry: a corpus of Mycenaean inscriptions from Knossos.
I looked through it. It was an enormous book. There was no text, only photograph after photograph of broken tablets with the inscriptions â in Linear B â reproduced in facsimile at the bottom. Some of the fragments had only a single character. 'He'll like this,' I said. 'Yes, I think he will,' said Francis. 'It was the most boring book I could find. I thought I might drop it off after dinner.'" (page 456) Aside from the fact that Francis knows Henry well and knows what kind of book he might like, it's also overall quite sweet and meaningful that Francis thought of Henry and decided to buy him a gift, especially since it was after the funeral and therefore after quite a difficult time for Henry, and it's quite possible that in this way Francis wanted to cheer him up without words and conversation, even mentioning that he was not going to go to Henry, but would simply leave a package with a book on his porch (and at that time Henry actively hid and avoided others).
â Next, I would like to note two small moments that allow us to understand how great the level of trust was between Francis and Henry:
- âCharles is absolutely beside himself. He asked me to call Henry and see if I could get anything out of him, I couldn't, of course, he was like a brick wall.'" (page 501)
I find this quite interesting and telling. At that moment, the closest person to Charles was undoubtedly Richard, who didn't refuse his requests, didn't lecture him about alcohol, and was generally there for him, without interfering with Charlesâs business. But Charles doesn't ask Richard to talk to Henry and find out all the information, instead he asks Francis, because everyone was probably used to it and knew that Henry and Francis were very close, which is why Charles assumed that Henry would definitely tell Francis all the secrets (as was probably the case earlier).
- "'You haven't seen Charles, but I have, and I don't think you realize the shape he's in.' Ask Francis, if you don't believe me. Even Julian's noticed." (page 527)
Despite the fact that, as we understand, Richard doesn't pay enough attention to the relationship between Henry and Francis, even he knows about the level of trust between them, so he backs up his words not with facts or tricks, but with Francis, saying that Francis definitely wonât lie to Henry and will tell him the truth. Surely Henry and Francis almost always shared their most intimate things with each other.
â And finally we come to the end of the book, which means to the most tragic moments between Henry and Francis.
Like the fact that Francis was the only one who attended Henry's funeral. I will always consider this moment the most important in their relationship, and despite the fact that it's tragic and sad, at the same time it's incredibly beautiful and once again emphasizes that Henry and Frances were close.
And even after time, Francis continues to think about Henry, mentioning him in his suicide letter:
- âI wonder if I will see Henry on the other side. If I do, I am looking forward to asking him why the hell he didn't just shoot us all and get it over with." (page 581)
He also says that he saw Henry during his suicide attempt:
- "'You know, I thought I saw him when I was lying in the bathtub,' said Francis. 'Faucet dripping, blood all over the goddamned place. I thought I saw him standing there in his bathrobe â you know, that one with all the pockets that he kept his cigarettes and stuff in â over by the window, with his back half-turned, and he said to me, in this really disgusted voice: "Well, Francis, I hope you're happy now."'" (pages 586-587)
And until the very end, Francis cannot believe that Henry is no longer alive, and we can understand that he really misses him:
- "Very suddenly, Francis said: 'You know, I keep expecting Henry to show up.'" (page 586);
- "'It's funny,' said Francis. 'I have a hard time believing he's really dead. I mean -I know there's no way he could have faked dying â but, you know, if anybody could figure out how to come back, it's him. It's kind of like Sherlock Holmes. Going over the Reichenbach Falls. I keep expecting to find that it was all a trick, that he'll turn up any day now with some kind of elaborate explanation.'â (page 587)
When I first read The Secret History, the relationship between Henry and Francis made the greatest impression on me. Every little interaction they had seemed incredibly significant to me, and I longed to read the opinions of other readers about them, to notice those moments that I hadn't noticed the first time. However, I was really disappointed to realize that no one gave their relationship meaning or importance.
Everyone around was discussing the relationship between Henry and Richard or Richard and Francis, but it seems to me that Richard was never as close to them as they were close to each other. They truly were best friends who valued, respected and loved each other. They trusted each other and found support in each other. They were different, but at the same time they remained incredibly similar to each other, filling each otherâs voids.
Their relationship will forever remain the most beautiful and important in the entire book for me, and I hope that I was able to reveal a different side of their relationship to all those who read my thoughts.
As Francis said,
"'I know Henry" (page 501), and I believe in his words.
Thank you for reading, and I will be glad if you share your opinion on this matter!;)

2024.03.29 20:43 Mantis_Shrimp47 Teeth are so pretty when they bloom
Iâve been collecting my teeth for as long as I can remember. I lost the first one under the slide at my school, pressed up against plastic that warped in the heat. There was a nook, right where the slide met the ground, where I could press my body flat to the ground and not be seen from outside. The woodchips dug into my cheek, and the blood dripping from my mouth stained them red. I could hear Kyle walking past the slide, yelling my name. I looked at the light shining through the pinprick holes above me and wondered if his knuckles still hurt from punching me. I hoped so. My mom always told me that family was the most important thing, but I wanted him to suffer, and I didnât care that he was my brother.
It had been a solid punch. Mom had taught him, on one of her better days, directing him in the rotted bit of land behind our apartment complex. Sheâd tucked his small fist into hers and guided him through the movements until he could do it on his own. Sheâd set out one of the withered potted plants that had sat against the rattling chain-link fence that surrounded the yard. Then Kyle had attacked the plant, hands flying against the stem and sending dried leaves spiraling up into the air.
Kyle had apologized right after. He didnât mean it, he said, he was just tired of me annoying him when he was trying to play with his friends.
One of my teeth was loose, wiggling merrily when I poked it with my tongue. It came out so easily, sliding from my gums with a quiet pop and a slow rush of coppery blood against my tongue. The tooth gleamed in the palm of my hand, pearlescent and delicate as a dandelion. My heaving breaths compounded in the cramped space and the noise came back to me louder. It sounded like there was a beast panting in my ear, maybe one of the monsters from the glossy storybooks at the library.
A small stalk inched out of the top of the tooth, where it had been connected to my mouth, like a chick breaking out of an egg. It was scratchy against my fingers, with small leaves all along it, and a miniscule purple flower at the top. I screamed and threw the tooth as far away from me as I could. I didnât know much about teeth, but I knew that they werenât supposed to blossom, and I was terrified of this strangeness.
I regretted it almost as soon as I did it. The need to hold my tooth close and protect it was stronger than my fear. Once Kyle had left, I got down on my hands and knees and hunted through the woodchips until I found it. The purple flower had broken off at some point, and I grieved for it.
My mom always used matches to light her cigarettes. She said that the inconvenience would keep her from smoking, but all it really caused was empty matchboxes left on counters and in corners because she never bothered to pick them up. When I got home, I took the prettiest matchbox, bright green with silver lettering, as a container for my tooth. As I lost them, all my teeth bloomed with flowers, and I put them in the box.
My mother was better, for the most part. The days of her stocking up the fridge, leaving a post-it note on the counter, and leaving for days at a time were gone. But I still stepped around the place on the kitchen tile where she had collapsed and caved her head in, even though the bloodstains had been replaced with new tile.
âYour auntie got an abortion, you know,â she had said from her place on the couch, slurring her words. âAll it took was a pill in the mail and then the babyâs just blood in the toilet.â She clapped her hands together to illustrate her point. Then she jerked forward and grabbed me by the wrist, staring up at me until I met her eyes.
âI love you, you know? But sometimes I wonderâŚâ She settled back onto the couch. âYeah. I wonder.â
Sheâd gotten up, back to the kitchen for another bottle of wine. She claimed that wine-drunk wasnât the same as actually-drunk. Kyle would call her an alcoholic sometimes, partly as a joke and partly not, and then every room would tremble with the force of her yelling.
Sheâd been stumbling, a shambling zombie of a woman. The ground in the entryway of the kitchen was raised, ever so slightly, and she went down hard. Her head cracked against the tile, chin first, and she didnât move.
Iâd been the one to call the ambulance. I stared at the scattering of loose teeth on the ground while I waited, and considered what my life would be like with a dead mom. Not so bad, I thought, and immediately felt guilty for it. I didnât mean to take them. I really didnât. But I saw those teeth there, three little pearls discarded on the ground like loose change, and I couldnât stop myself. I washed the viscera off them as soon as I could. It seemed wrong for something so beautiful to be stained like that.
I put them in my matchbox and watched them bloom like all the others.
I loved going to the dentist as a kid, even though we only went when my mother could afford it, which wasnât often. I savored the sharp hook scraping away at all the impurities that had built up over time, the minty fluoride paste, and the careful probing for cavities. The best part was the scoured-clean ache at the end and the wet glide of my tongue across the smoothed surface.
âWell, thereâs no cavities,â the dentist said, during one visit. âBut thereâs a bit of plaque build-up here in the back, so make sure youâre brushing and flossing regularly.â
The dentist was a short man with ears that stuck out from the sides of his head and a patchy beard that hung from his chin like a mop. He hummed while he worked, and I wished he would shut up, so that I could listen to the screech of his tools in my mouth.
âMy teeth are impure?â I asked.
He laughed a bit, his beard flopping awkwardly. âI wouldnât say it like that, but sure.â
I went home and flossed for hours, trying to dig out the faults that I knew were there. I stopped eating sticky foods and after every meal, I used the fancy electric toothbrush that I had stolen from the store on the corner. When I went back, the dentist said that my teeth were the cleanest heâd ever seen.
Every lost tooth was an event for me, as a child. Iâd spend weeks in anticipation of it, feeling for looseness every day. Even when they felt so close to coming out, I never pulled a single one; I didnât want to risk damaging them. When I was still gullible enough to believe in the tooth fairy, I would spend nights awake, clutching the dull knife Iâd stolen from the kitchen. Iâd pull my scratchy blanket over my shoulders like a cape and jump at every sound, waving my knife at the dark corners of the room. I would not let some idiot fairy take my teeth.
I grew up eventually, as children tend to do. No one came to see me graduate from school, and when I went home, the apartment was empty. I took my box of teeth and left, using the small amount of money Iâd saved up to get a bus to the next city.
I was homeless for a bit, drifting from place to place aimlessly. I spent a lot of time at libraries, and I befriended one of the librarians. He got me a job with his uncle at a plant nursery. The nursery focused on flowers, but there were also a couple small bushes and hanging plants. There was also a garden tucked into the corner, to put plants that wouldnât be sold. It was where my boss kept his personal collection, and he gave me free permission to use it, as long as I didnât encroach on his plants. It was simple work, just trimming and watering, fertilizing and debugging. It was minimum-wage, mostly because I had no qualifications, but I didnât mind. I liked caring for the plants.
It seemed cruel to keep my teeth in a box, when there was all that dirt so close. I planted my first tooth, the one I had lost under the slide so long ago, in the nursery garden. It was yellowed with age, but still beautiful, and I buried it four inches deep, with the stalk sticking above the dirt. It grew so fast that I figured it liked all the new space, and after that it didnât feel right to have my other teeth cramped up in the box.
I was trusted to be alone in the nursery, by then. Most of the time my boss was off looking for a new mistress in Mexico or France, leaving me to look after the plants. I took advantage of the time alone to care for my sprouting teeth. Once everything in my collection was planted, I started feeling a tickling in my mouth. It was coming from the center of my teeth, all of them at the same time. It felt like there was a spider crawling around inside of them, its legs prickling against me. It was maddening.
I leaned over towards the bathroom mirror, opening my mouth wide to see inside. As I looked, I saw a small crack in one of my bottom teeth. I ran my fingers over it, trying to figure out what it was, and they snagged on something that felt like a silky string. Peering closer, I could see a thin stalk emerging from the crack.
I gasped, staggering away from the mirror. My breath was picking up as I edged closer to panic. I pulled at the head of the stalk with my fingers, ripping it out with a sharp sting of pain that seemed to come directly from my spine. It fell limp into the sink, and I dared to hope that I had ended it. But the next morning, there was another stalk pushing its way out of the crack.
They opened up, more and more cracks forming, and flowers uncoiled from them. Carnations from my central incisor, a tulip from my top left canine, azaleas from my first molars. My mouth was too small for it all, and they hung over my lips. As more and more teeth fractured, the itch faded, and I learned to deal with the garden emerging from my head. Every attempt at pruning it just made it grow back stronger, and eventually I just tried to look on the bright side, as small as it was. At least my flowers smelled good. Kyle found me during my fifth year at the plant nursery. His sweatshirt was stained and wearing down at the edges, with the seams coming apart. His nails were cracked, the bags under his eyes were big enough to be sold by Gucci, and his hair was hanging limp over his ears.
The bell over the door rang gently as he slouched in, hands in his pockets and a smile fixed on his face.
âWhat are you doing here?â I asked, stepping forward so that I stood between him and my plants.
âI donât need an excuse to see my favorite sibling in the world,â he said, slinging an arm around me and touching one of my bushes as he did it.
I watched the hand that had touched my shrub, ready to smack it away if he got too close to anything else.
âSure,â I said flatly.
He chatted at me while I got steadily tenser, about inane stuff like the grocery store heâd gone to last week and the state of the concrete on the public roadways. Soon, though, he got to the real reason why heâd come.
âItâs just, itâs been real tough lately. Iâve got lots ofâŚstuff going on. And so I need a little loan from you, hardly anything.â
âHow much?â I asked. I was willing to give him money just to get him to go away.
He shrugged, reaching up to scratch his neck in the faux-awkward way he had mastered. âNot much, not much. Ten thousand, thatâs it, and Iâll pay you back with interest. Cross my heart and hope to die, I promise.â
âNo,â I said.
âWhat, just no?â he said angrily. âI come all this way, for that? Mom would be ashamed of you.â
âGet out,â I said, and I pushed him towards the door. He shrugged off my hands, turning to face me and dropping low. He bounced back and forth, sort of reminding me of the way that the characters in Street Fighter moved.
âYou disrespectful little shit,â he said.
His heel hit against a pot, a fancy clay one that Iâd gotten as a birthday gift to myself. It tipped, preciously, and then fell, breaking the pot and the plant inside into pieces.
My hand snapped out without my conscious direction, my fingers pressing against his lips and teeth. I pushed all of my rage into his mouth and he screamed. Sunflowers spilled out over his lips. He ripped at the daisies and daylilies that sprouted from his gums, leaves spilling from the sides of his mouth and vines hanging down his chin. It was far more violent than my own transformation had ever been. His jaw was dislocated, forced open by the force of the erupting plants.
âHelp me,â Kyle begged through the petals, barely able to speak.
I watched the flowers consume him.
I planted Kyle in the corner of my nursery, near the shelf where I keep all my tools. I put him into the ground teeth-first, hooking his jaw into the dirt while his eyes darted desperately around. He struggled, in the beginning, but the vines sprouting from his molars held him strictly in place until he stopped trying to escape.
I watered him once a day and packed fertilizer around his neck, and within a month, he was indiscernible from a flowering bush.
My own flowers thrived. They spilled down my chin, brushing against my neck and filling every wet crevice of my mouth. I spent hours smiling in the mirror, admiring the wildflowers along my gumline, ivy threading between the gaps between my teeth, and the wisteria erupting from my crowns.
Iâm afraid that Iâm going to end up like Kyle, tethered in place and kept alive from my flowers feeding me nutrients. Kyle cries beneath the dirt sometimes, his sobs weak and scratchy. I donât think I can stop this, though. Teeth are so pretty when they bloom.

2024.03.15 09:10 lavender-muse-1005 My Perfume Tray (Current Favorites) + Talking Addiction & Decluttering
Like (probably, I'm assuming) a lot of us, I've gone through a bit of an addiction and obsession when it comes to fragrance. I fell in love with perfume a little over a year ago, made the mistake of buying a ton of full bottles that I definitely didn't need, and was left with the mess I made. After a long process of decluttering some, buying a few more, decluttering a lot, and then a lot more, I finally got myself to a point where I'm happy with my collection without having a bunch of bottles I rarely reach for.
I haven't posted a thread in a while, so I wanted to talk about my current perfume tray. As always, these are just my opinions and preferences. Strap in, because I have a lot to say. I hope you enjoy!
Gucci Memoire D'une Odeur - This was one of the first fragrances I bought for myself when I started my journey. To be honest, I bought it for the bottle because I didn't know any better at the time. However, this has become one of my absolute favorites. It reminds me of chamomile tea right before bed. It's a little bit fresh, a little bit classy, and it has the slightest bit of spice that pushes this beautiful fragrance over the edge for me. I personally love this one for gloomy but serene walks in the rain.
Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Eau de Toilette - Okay, okay! I know this one is a common one. Some might say it's forgettable, but I think that's why I love it so much. This is such an easy reach fragrance for the the days I don't want to stand out so much. As an introvert, sometimes I don't want to be loud. Sometimes I want to smell good rather than incredible. This is a light freshie that smells like fresh lemons that you literally just cut into. And it has enough apple to give it a crisp edge. I always feel extra clean whenever I spray this on. Pro tip: I like to layer this with the Light Blue body lotion which I got for $25 at Ross.
Chanel Coco Noir - If I only had one, this would be my signature scent. This feels like me as a bottle. A lot of people describe this as mysterious, sexy, and confident. It is those things, but I think this also works for an introvert like me. It's mysterious in that it doesn't give too much away. It's reserved but in the silence it says a whole lot. I first get hit with the grapefruit and patchouli. It can be a little much at first, but it quiets down within the first couple hours. Then on my skin, the rose and jasmine are uplifted by vanilla. It's powdery and vanillic in the dry down, and that's when I like it the most. It's a little soapy but it's what Chanel does best.
Versace The Dreamer - This is another one I bought when I was just starting out. It was less than $25 at TJ Maxx, and I had heard good things. I didn't know if I was going to like it because I'm picky about "masculine" fragrances. However, I love this. This is fresh but has a slight unexpected sweetness in the air. The note I get the most is the tobacco blossom. It's beautiful. It doesn't smell like cigarettes but it smells more like loose tobacco unsmoked but with a fresh twist. I also get a beautiful iris note and some other light florals. This is unique.
Narciso Rodriguez Pure Musc - I'll be honest, I don't wear this on it's own very much. This is my favorite layering tool. I'll layer it with Chanel Coco Noir, D&G Light Blue, or Versace The Dreamer to make any of them the slightest bit muskier. I love my musks. On it's own however, it can be a beautiful spring floral musk.
Le Labo ThĂŠ Matcha 26 - This was, in fact, my very first LOVE. This is the first time I understood what people meant by love at first sniff. This was my first niche house, and finally, I understood. It starts with a creamy fig and coconut. Many will say it doesn't smell like matcha. I disagree. While it isn't a gourmand matcha, this fragrance reflects the feel of drinking a frothy matcha latte with coconut milk. It has a little bit of green-ness to get the matcha note across and some creamy woods at the base.
Clean Reserve Skin - This is THE skin scent for me. It's like if you were to walk past a bakery at dawn. It rained last night, and you can smell the petrichor. Then someone opens the bakery door, and you get a whiff of that salted praline. Yes, I'll use it to layer occasionally to add that salted praline note to other fragrances, but I like this on it's own or in ways that accentuate it. My favorite way to wear this is with Lake & Skye's 11:11 body oil. They are similar, but 11:11 doesn't have that salted praline. This combo makes the fragrance so long lasting for a skin scent. I get whiffs of it in the air on windy day, and it's immaculate.
Imaginary Authors A Whiff of Waffle Cone - I have a deep love for gourmands. Even though I don't always feel like I can pull them off, on the days I have that confidence, I love this perfume. Now, I will say I used to work at an ice cream shop and had to make waffle cones hours on end, so this smell brings back those memories. It smells like sugary cinnamon buttercrisp waffle cones. The vanilla and caramel create a delicious and buttery vibe. It dries down to have a bread-like quality which surprises me every time. I wouldn't wear this every day. But the days I do, I can't stop sniffing my arms.
Maison Francis Kurkdjian Gentle Fluidity Gold - Okay, I'll admit it. This was out of budget. It's very expensive. However, this is my wedding fragrance. This is the one I wear as guest and if I were to get married tomorrow, I'd probably wear this. This is a sensual and mysterious vanilla. It's creamy, kind of like marshmallows or s'mores, but elegant, expensive, and classy as class can get.
Hermès Un Jardin à Cythère - Now, I don't wear this one too often, because even though no one has ever told me they didn't like this fragrance on me, it's not a crowd pleaser in the ways the others are. That being said, not all perfumes need to be crowd pleasers. This one smells like a lemon olive oil cake with lemon icing that has chopped pistachios sprinkles on top. I personally love pistachios, so naturally, I love this one. I wouldn't say it's gourmand in the same ways as A Whiff of Waffle Cone. I haven't worn it since last summer, but I'm excited to wear it again and experiment with layering combinations.
Woof! That was a lot! I would love to know what everybody's current fragrance loves are, your experience with any of the fragrances I mentioned, or your experience with perfume addiction/obsession and decluttering. What's your process for taking perfumes off the tray? What's your process for choosing new fragrances to add to your collection?

2024.02.20 00:29 rb189 ELDO Sample Set Reviews, quick and dirty edition
On mobile so my apologies if the format is messed up đ
Right off the bat: great presentation, terrible atomizers. I received this as an Xmas gift, I didnât get a booklet and Iâm not sure if there was a discount code included or not. Totally a good gift though!
Overall the projection is minimal and longevity is fairly low, maybe 3 hours at best on me.
La Fin du Monde: floral and then nice cool feeling powder, not sweet powder. I had high hopes for this, itâs not what I was expecting but itâs pleasant. Not getting popcorn or gunpowder accords.
I Am Trash: happy fruity floral, (Fuji) apple and rose and dries down soft. Itâs cute and easy to wear but I really want the candle instead.
Attaquer le Soleil: spicy and leathery and rich. Labdanum!
Like This: opens bright and happy probably the tangerine and Neroli, then a sort of vegetal/earthy/soft powder quality comes in. Brain is telling me thatâs the immortelle but itâs most likely the pumpkin. Itâs giving early âfallâ in California. Still hella hot and balmy but the pumpkin patches and decorations are starting to come out. Big fan of the citrus opening.
Rien Intense Incense: soapy leather? Seemed to get a burst of myrrh at first but now ?? Notes confirm soapy leather (aldehydes and iris, leather, patch, etc) but could be the rose and labdanum making me think myrrh.
Hermann A Mes CĂ´tes: itâs giving (og Disney California Adventure ride) Soarin over California, specifically the kayaking scene: wet rocks and damp forest. The ambrox is clear and present. Surprisingly Iâm not getting hit in the face with galbanum or at least itâs not pulling bell pepper in this scent. The base is very clean and soft. Perfect scent for the first day of rainy season, itâs moody but not heavy or fighting for attention.
You or Someone Like You: opens crisp and grassy, I can detect the mint but itâs not at the forefront. Absolutely smells like drinking a mojito on freshly cut grass. Super lighthearted and carefree, like spending a summer day doing nothing but soaking up the sun.
Jasmine et Cigarette: yeah cigarette smoke and generic floral upon first spray. As it dries omg a fresh green jasmine! Not overly sweet or sugary jasmine. The atomizer gave out on me when I tried to get a full wear so Iâm annoyed. This would be a perfect transitional season easy reach. The opening clears fast and leaves just a really pleasant jasmine, nothing more nothing less. My favorite.
Ghost in the Shell: Hairspray in the most loving way. I like it as an easy to wear floral, would choose this over most designer florals (except Gucciâs). I donât get anything lactonic and am kinda bummed I donât get any yuzu.
She Was an Anomaly: I donât know what Iâm smelling upon first spray. Possibly a very subtle/nice iso e super? Very similar to Clean Reserve Skin. After checking the notes Iâm not getting anything specific listed but they generally all mix nicely to get to this end result of a Your Skin but Better scent. Itâs a Clean Girl scent.
Eau de Protection: deep rose and a vague grassy/greenness at the top. A sibling to Elizabeth and James Nirvana Rose. This has a certain lightness to it but I would consider that the house DNA not necessarily that thereâs an intended softness to this blend. I donât get anything that I would consider like blood nor anything metallic, just a deep red rose.
Fat Electrician: very sharp grassy opening, but my fault cause I sniffed too early and got an alcohol blast. Dries immediately smoother. Itâs mainly the vetiver and myrrh in my skin, each of them balancing the other. The vanilla smooths and softens out the blend without going too sweet or sugary. Very pleasant and unisex.
Experimentum Crucis: rose + soapy musk base, possibly the ELDO dna. Iâm not getting the fruit listed in the note breakdown, just a nice soapy rose. Not astringently-sharp-stabs-your-nose soap but the suds from a bar of rose scented Dove soap. On a full wear the cumin shows up at the top lol, itâs short lived but adds a unique twist
500 Years: sweet and spicy, then the floral heart. The sweetest of the premium range samples so far
Spice Must Flow: powdery spices. A jammy rose. This actually lasted the longest on me, I could still faintly smell it with my nose pressed right against my wrist maybe 5 hours later.
All the rose scents are pretty similar just in different fonts. Not to say theyâre bad or anything Iâm just having trouble differentiating them and thereâs only so many times I can say rosy without rolling my eyes at myself. EC is clean, 500 is sweet and almost foody, and SMF is dry.
Soul of My Soul: like, white musk/laundry detergent/dryer sheet? Clearly my nose is confused đ the slight zing of bergamot shows up in the tail of tonka and vanilla. I would call this a fluffy synthetic fragrance and thankfully not a gourmand one. Itâs a grown-woman version of a clean girl scent; in that itâs more complex with different accords in the blend other than just ISO/ambrox/cetalox . I donât care for it, easily my least favorite
At this point I would not pay the higher price tag for the Orange Extraordinaire range, though I would like to eventually try Frustration.
Remarkable People: something fresh in the opening? Citrus and a little sweet, like a fresh PEZ candy, the reddish pink ones not the lemon. Jasmine and grapefruit are playing really nicely on my skin and the floral grows more as it settles. This is a very happy scent it makes me think of playing at the playground as a kid.
Une Amourette: a cool spice. Itâs pink pepper! This is very neroli forward on my skin, I can see it pairing well over the Nuxe dry oil
Exit the King: artificial soap? It smells how I imagine cartoon soap bubbles to smell, itâs really pleasant and isnât sharp or scratchy like fragranced laundry detergent. I get mainly the soap smell and the powdery texture I associate with oakmoss.
Tom of Finland/Clean Suede: a very polite leather daddy. Soft leather accord with something warm that provides a sense of humanity. I would compare it to brand new car interiors except it has that warmth of a human presence and thereâs no plastic in this. Iâm a fan
My faves: jasmine et cigarette, Tom of Finland, remarkable people, Hermann
Least favorites: soul of my soul, exit the king
Overall I enjoyed going through the set and am really surprised at how light the house is, however I donât see myself purchasing a full bottle at this time. Iâm adding Jasmine et Cigarette to my wishlist and keeping my eyes out for a partial

2024.01.10 07:00 jesterpuppet absolute flop of a decant haul *first impressions*
| i can't believe how much my judgment let me down on these picks :'-) Snowy Owl: this one they straight up forgot to give me. insult to injury. i'll probably order a sample from zoologist (Canadian site is still open!) Annabel's Birthday Cake: i was so excited for this but i'm getting no lemon cake, no rose buttercream, no balloon latex!! it's giving generic perfume.....something vaguely patchouli maybe even cause it's reminding me a bit of Lord of Misrule?? Tea for Two: i once saw a tiktok girl review this as 'depressing, like you've been chainsmoking alone with yesterday's cup of tea still beside you' or something like that. her taste was good i should've believed her but cinnamon and gingerbread got me blinded T_T it smells like cinnamon and old cigarette smoke, like when it's hanging in the air perpetually in someone's house. however unwearable, i kind of love it for evoking chainsmoker grandma that made you cinnamon tea. will have to tentatively wear test for longer and see if gingerbread comes through, would make it a real nostalgic gem. Couleur Vanille: sooo sad this sounded delicious v_v i was getting sunscreen at first, nothing like what i wanted but i mean, ok, but then i got a metallic note?? of all things! my arch nemesis!! she was a scrubber :-( Gucci Guilty Elixir: luckily the one i got for my boyfriend smelled good <3 we knew this we've been smelling it in stores. not gourmand but one of the sweetest colognes i've ever smelled! i look forward to snuggling into this :D Dark Arsenic: the tokyomilk dark collection has been discontinued for a few years so maybe their bottle went off, but all i'm getting is fresh lemon.....very lucky it's actually like a real bitter lemon juice scent, as someone that usually hates lemon notes cause they smell like dish soap. would wear this in the summer, but quietly hoping something will have changed by then and i'll get vanilla and wormwood like i wanted >_< i am under the assumption decants don't need time to oxidize so i shouldn't expect much to change, but i will keep sniffing and update if i notice any changes! still maybe it needs to settle from the trip? i was so shocked by none of them smelling right except gucci, i just had to get these thoughts out somewhere 3 it seems like the image didn't attach proper so here it is submitted by jesterpuppet to Perfumes [link] [comments] |
2024.01.04 16:36 Cream_Fortress_2 For anyone looking for a cheap and easy cosplay, here's some tips
2023.12.15 21:50 marilern1987 I am tired of her judging the way I spend my money.
My roommate and I spend our money differently. That's fine. She makes certain financial decisions, I make other financial decisions. She has certain obligations I don't have, and I have certain obligations she doesn't have. I don't know if she just thinks that I live this lavish lifestyle while she has to pay bills, and she's resentful about it, or what the fuck it is. She has a child who does not live with her full time and it is a big contribution she has to make, so I don't know if she's resentful of me for not having to do the same. but I am getting really sick of her trying to judge me for the way I choose to spend my money.
As far as she is concerned, as long as I am paying my rent, and as long as I contribute to the apartment in the way that we both agreed, she should not give two shits how I spend my money.
I try to be smart with my money. I do like to save money for things I want, but generally speaking I make food at home, I don't drink, I don't go out much (especially not these days with the way things cost). I occasionally order food, or do something nice for myself, but I try to be smart with my money, save, invest etc.
A lot of the time, if I'm ordering something on amazon, it's something I need. For example, a few days ago I got back from the store, and I realized I forgot it was my turn to buy more toilet paper, paper towels, kitchen soap. I was already about to go to bed so instead of going back to the store and doing that whole thing all over again, I just went on amazon and ordered them, and it was delivered the next day.
So the box is outside and I get a comment like
Are you rich? You always order Amazon. Rich rich rich.
It's fucking toilet paper and soap for the house. She acts like I'm going out and buying Gucci.
In addition to that, I received packages that were gifts from relatives for my birthday. She decided to interpret this as me going online and ordering a bunch of expensive items for myself. She sees a
box and thinks it must contain luxury goods. I don't get that.
It is because of comments like this, that when I did actually do a shopping trip for my birthday, I had to go out of my way to hide the fact that I went shopping. I carried everything in in grocery bags to make it look like I just bought some food. I had to throw away the tags separately, so that she wouldn't see them. I bought makeup at Sephora, I had to hide the Sephora bag.
Ironically enough, 2-3 days later she waltzes in with a bag from Sephora. but here's the thing, I don't comment on that kind of shit. "Oh, so rich, you went to Sephora, that equals
rich"
Which is ridiculous, I should not need to do this just to avoid someone's rude, unnecessary comments.
Plus, if I had just gone to Walmart and bought toilet paper, she wouldn't have gone off about how I'm so rich. She wouldn't have been judging that. It's the fact that it came in an amazon box that she thinks I'm out there spending exhorbitant amounts of money
And even if I was spending an exhorbitant amount of money, it still does not matter. I don't comment on the fact that she has to have a new car every year. I don't comment on the fact that she spends at least $20 a day on beer and cigarettes alone. Because it doesn't matter what I think, as long as she pays the rent just like I do.
I'm just tired of it, man. I keep to myself. I also keep my opinions to myself. Why can't the people I live with do the same?

2023.12.08 00:21 aTFTthrowaway I rolled for The K/DA Kaisa and got her on my 30th try.
Hey, just wanted to share my story, partially in hopes that it breaks my own cycle.
I love TFT - I'm not particularly good at it, but I enjoy playing it with friends and trying out new combos. I spend a lot of time running around emoting with friends and trying new builds. Something that originally drew me to the game was all the flashy little legends and in particular, the lightbringer and its animation that shoots lightning into its horn.
I saw a couple posts on here about people who had spun for K/DA Kaisa on their FIRST gacha so I thought I'd try and see my luck. I didn't get it, but.. I figured I'd get another one. Or maybe a cute chibi at some point. I got so many old 3* tacticians. It even gave me three star versions of ones I had already 2 starred. So I guess my first warning is that you should upgrade any legendary ones you have first, all the way to 3 star.
But I couldn't stop. I kept buying 900 coins at a time and doing two rolls just hoping to hit it or the other special chibis. I was having a really bad night with my anxiety that is work related (I have really poor job security in my field) so I kept rolling hoping for a win. I just wanted something to go right this week.
I've rolled for a lot of chibis so far. I'm not rich, I make enough for rent and food and then I usually save the rest. I find it hard to resist- hope is a really strong thing, and after seeing 3 different posts here about people who had gotten them in a roll or two, I felt empowered. But I just kept digging. I added more RP when I had about 15 rolls left because it felt like such a waste to get that far in and not get the prize, like a carnival game where you've already sunk so much money in, but moved the target so close you're bound to hit it eventually.
I'm hoping you can empathize with me. I know some of you don't have addictive personalities, but I figure I'd try to share what it's like. I've seen a dev compare Treasure Realms to Gucci, but it honestly feels more like cigarettes to me. I woke up this morning thinking "maybe if I hit KDA Akali in a few rolls, last night's trauma will be worth it" but I'm fighting that urge. Truthfully, I just feel bad about it all, and I wish I could go back in time and not spend my money to get things like a "3* Yuletide Paddlemar".
Can we discuss removing those posts that incentivize the gambling aspect of this game? If not, am I able to post a "got this on my 30th roll..." to remind everyone that the majority of us won't hit? It even feels inequitable to limit it to just 'no repeat posts': for every person that hits on their first go, 39 people won't.
I keep telling myself that I'm okay with this all, but I wish I'd never picked up TFT.
