Michael Jackson’s song 'Smooth Criminal' featured on his seventh album Bad (1987). The song is about a woman being attacked in their apartment. It used the refrain “Annie Are You Ok?” which is used to teach students CPR on CPR mannequin Annie (Wikipedia, 2023). “Resusci Anne was developed by the Norwegian toy maker Åsmund S. Lærdal and the Austrian-Czech physician Peter Safar and American physician James Elam” (Wikipedia, 2023). The oldest version is the proto-CPR mannequin of the world. It was invented after Asmund “was alerted to… physicians and engineers in Baltimore that had a new and much more effective method for resuscitation, involving mouth-to-mouth breathing”. The creation was sentimental as Tore, his son, had experienced drowning. Basically, I’m a sucker for books where MC2 has been suffering in silence for a long time and has abandoned all expectations of a better life, but then suddenly MC1 realises what’s happening and devotes themselves fiercely to protecting MC2. I’d like the book to depict all three stages of the situation – starting with MC2 suffering and MC1 being oblivious, then showing the moment where MC1 realises what's happening, then showing the protection/comfort that comes after – but it doesn’t really matter to me what percentage of the book is devoted to which stage. I also don’t mind whether the reader knows about the suffering before MC1 or if they realise it at the same time, and I don’t mind what exactly the suffering consists of (most of the books l’ve read that fit the trope depict some kind of abuse, but it definitely doesn’t have to be that).
Some examples of books l've enjoyed that fit the trope: - Winter’s Orbit, Everina Maxwell – Kiem is a prince arranged to marry Jainan, who’s the widower of Kiem’s cousin Taam and who comes across as very cold and uptight. Eventually, Kiem realises that Taam was abusive, and that Jainan has assumed all marriages are like that and is now just waiting for Kiem to start hurting him. - A Strange and Stubborn Endurance, Foz Meadows – another arranged marriage one, but this time Vel was sexually assaulted by his ex before the marriage and expects it to happen again with his husband, Cae. Cae actually figures it out what’s happening ~30% of the way throunh the book, leaving a lot of time for the comfort side of things. - Orientation, Gregory Ashe – North & Shaw are best friends (and endgame lovers), North is in a physically abusive marriage but explains away the injuries as coming from boxing, eventually Shaw accidentally eavesdrops on him being beaten and is horrified. Interestingly, it takes a long time for Shaw to tell North that he’s figured out what’s happening. Lucien is a prisoner at the palace whom Kaz has claimed as a personal slave, ostensibly to humiliate him but actually to protect him from a worse punishment, because he’s a total softie at heart. Lucien finally works out what’s going on and ends up basically defending Kaz from the other side of the power dynamic. - Empty Net, Avon Gale – Laurent is a minor-league hockey player who’s universally hated for acting like a jerk. Turns out that’s Laurent’s only like that because his father and ex-coach was horrifically abusive, and he’s gotten used to hurting people before they can hurt him. Eventually, Jason becomes the first person to learn not just the true circumstances of the firing, but also that Gio’s ex also used to beat him and that his old colleagues have been harassing him ever since the incident, including refusing to provide him with backup in the field, making anonymous phone calls threatening his niece, and sending unmarked packages containing dog food to his new station. Jason flips into being fiercely defensive of Gio, and it’s a delight to witness. - Watch Me, Sloane Kennedy – Jude is a high-flying businessman who comes across as very uptight and abrasive, but he’s actually just trying to hold down a high-stress job while dealing with severe ADHD and intense fear of failure from his time in foster care. Nikolai is his bodyguard who slowly sees through him and starts looking after him.

Some examples of books l've enjoyed that fit the trope: - Winter’s Orbit, Everina Maxwell – Kiem is a prince arranged to marry Jainan, who’s the widower of Kiem’s cousin Taam and who comes across as very cold and uptight. Eventually, Kiem realises that Taam was abusive, and that Jainan has assumed all marriages are like that and is now just waiting for Kiem to start hurting him. - A Strange and Stubborn Endurance, Foz Meadows – another arranged marriage one, but this time Vel was sexually assaulted by his ex before the marriage and expects it to happen again with his husband, Cae. Cae actually figures it out what’s happening ~30% of the way throunh the book, leaving a lot of time for the comfort side of things. - Orientation, Gregory Ashe – North & Shaw are best friends (and endgame lovers), North is in a physically abusive marriage but explains away the injuries as coming from boxing, eventually Shaw accidentally eavesdrops on him being beaten and is horrified. I made a new account for this and this is my first time posting so please be easy, but I need an outside perspective on this. Why are all shifter stories (with maybe a tiny few exceptions) all steamy romances?
Plot 1: MC is a renegade or outcast and falls for a shifter MC can’t have but they get together anyway
Plot 2: MC is necessary to stop some curse or prophecy (often only by having the Alpha’s baby)
Plot 3: MC and mate are so in love that the can’t stay away from each other (causing a Romeo/Juliet sex scene)
In all these scenarios there are usually a ton of sexy steamy scenes with way too much graphic detail.
There is little story or character development beyond this sexy kind of scene that still somehow moves the story along.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m all for a bit of romance and sex but if that’s all it’s for, why read more than a few?
One of the exceptions: Ghost Mountain Shifters series (by Audrey Faye) does play more with the experiences of the pack than the sexual relationships. I admit there is probably more emotion than most people want to read about (though it’s often way more humorous than sad). I prefer less sex and more relationships!
Another good exception (though much laced with sexy scenes): One True Mate series (by Lisa Ladew)

My name is Lisa, and I'm going to give you a little bit of a BG first.
I'm 41 (in a few weeks), married, was a virgin until I was married, recently had a baby. ^_^
Now for a bit of story (this is long, so I'm going to try and pair it down)-
The month that I turned 30 (June), I woke up to something that I thought was a UTI- naturally went to the doctor, got antibiotics, it seemed better, went on with life. A few days later, here it was again. This started a cycle that lasted over 8 months, and cost easily over 4,000$ in doctor visits, and the like. There was lots of head scratching, and about 6 different rounds of antibiotics that were all different.
Eventually they diagnosed me with "urethritis" (if you have chronic pain in your urethral area, please look into this.)
Long story short, lots started going wrong. Serious pain in my "lower half" (internally). I started going to the doctor for other things.
But I'll never forget when I went in for another exam, the doctor put her finger in me, and the pain was so intense that I fell back. That was new. More tests, more problems. I went to a specialist. She diagnosed me with vestibulitis and vulvodynia and told me that it would clear up in about 6 months.
Welp, a year went by, then another. I am married, so this was extremely difficult on our sex life. Almost every time we had sex, it was excruciating for me. We actually went an entire year one time without almost touching each other.
I started doing my own research and digging into things and I found a group on facebook called "Vulvodynia Curing it Naturally with Laura." - And I'll tell you right now, while I understand that correlation does NOT equal causation - nearly EVERY SINGLE WOMAN in there had the same story about how all of their symptoms started. - The culprit ? Antibiotics, or some medicine for "down there" (as a few had had yeast infections and used monostat)... I saw a few posts earlier this week where women said they got it after surgery (of things not related to the vagina)... the more likely scenario is that the antibiotics did it as most surgeries require you to take antibiotics afterwards.
The vagina is an ecosystem made of perfect flora and fauna and when we disrupt it, we can cause all kinds of crappy things to happen... pain, dryness, itching, and so on. Antibiotics work to destroy bacteria- and not only the bad, but the good as well.
What I found were a few things - firstly, if you CAN contact her, get Laura to send you her free book on how she cured her vulvodynia (I DO NOT have it- so please don't ask. I had it years ago, but no longer do.)
What I can tell you, however is this- her book talks a lot about the benefits of replacing good bacteria, PH balancing (drinking water like essentia, etc), and eating a LOW OXALATE diet- I started to eat a low oxalate diet, and I only followed it about 80 % (Because I'm a dumb dumb) and I'll tell you right now, even THAT much saw an improvement in pain. I was floored. It DID take some time (about a month to really start to notice a difference) But I went from near constant feeling like burning / acidy feeling down there, to having breaks, and the overall pain lessening by about 30% ... that was HUGE for me.
Something else I did was started taking several probiotics, and drinking KEFIR, etc. I SUGGEST Femdophilus if you haven't taken it/ tried it.
Still, it wasn't gone, and our sex life was still suffering tremendously.
So, I started doing another round of research and realized that there was a good chance that the doctors had also missed something.
Not to get TOO TMI - but for years, I had had GREEN discharge... like snot -_- So gross. No one could ever explain that. I didn't have an STD, There was no trace of certain kinds of bacteria that would make that happen.
One day I came upon an article about desquamative vaginitis, and they stated that for many women the answer seemed to be vitamin D- Welp, I went out, bought some regular old vitamin D, and started slamming it like crazy to the point of near ODing on it. (I looked up how much was safe to take first) ...
And let me tell you... I thought I was crazy, but the pain that I had been experiencing for over EIGHT YEARS almost vanished overnight...
I believe it was all of the things that I did working together, but I've been basically in "remission" for about 3 years now. I even had a baby. ^_^
I STILL have a day EVERY SO OFTEN where I get a "minor" itch down there, that is totally manageable and nothing like before, but otherwise? Pain free.

If you think white people & non-white people are equally healthy & beautiful you are excusing the wrongs done to non-white folks & covering for the crimes of those who engaged in race harm (this does not mean that people who engaged in race-harm ought to be harmed, they need forgiveness & love & right guidance too). It is possible to be restored to health, beauty, fairness & whiteness at any point and time in a person's life.

2.5. how you implement an idea is important. Just because someone does not execute an idea well does not mean the idea is wrong or misguided, just the implementation.
- make love & abstain from having children until you are healthy, desirable & there is a need.
- marriage is so two people may perfect one another.
- everyone should have the highest & best quality of life (equally) before more members are added to society
- if someone has children selfishly with disregard to what is considered desirable & attractive (& or with low standards) then they are likely to encourage unkindness towards themselves & their children.
- becoming pregnant is not a unilateral, bilateral or regional issue, it affects a lot of stakeholders & the good of the stakeholders (the environment, the larger humankind etc.) ought to be considered instead of taking vigilante, self centered action. Taking self-centered or unilateral action results in unkindness & conflict with others.
- just because we have an ability does not mean we may use it as we wish without regard for others
- beauty must have standards for viewing beauty as in the eye of the beholder devolves into aberrant sexuality as with one too many Indians who engage in bestiality. It is immoral to convince people that oppressed non white people are equally beautiful as white folk.
- non-white folk were produced as the result of oppression or overexposure to solar radiation & other environmental stressors.
- it is preferable to detox via cold environs (which preserves) over detoxxing via heat (which burns, mutilates & disfigures).

I know this is blasphemy to many, but I consider myself Kleypas neutral. Meaning, I’ve read most of her books, she obviously is understands how to write a readable romance, some of her books are better than others, but overall I think she has become formulaic, her FMCs are often weak/uninteresting and her MMCs are essentially the same lover in every book.

- {Winter's Orbit by Everina Maxwell} Sci-fi futuristic, probably my favorite arranged marriage novel. MC1 is the cousin of the prince, and after the prince's death he is quickly asked to marry the prince's windower. MC2 is cold and very devoted to his duty, while MC1 is more casual even if quite kind and well meaning. Some very high tension deriving from the fact that MC2's previous husband was controlling and abusive and MC2 prepares himself for the same treatment from MC1. A lot of focus on the political plot too.
- {Ocean's echo by Everina Maxwell} Sci-fi futuristic, forced bonding (no marriage). MC1 is a "reader" (of minds and space) and after angering the authorities one time too many he is sent to be bonded to MC2, a lieutenant on a ship. The relationship starts rocky and antagonistic, and the book focuses heavily on the plot. Also the bonding is actually fake, they just pretend to be bonded.
- {The High King's Golden Tongue by Megan Derr} Fantasy, arranged marriage. MC1 has been raised to be the perfect prince and study diplomacy, languages and etiquette. He joins MC2 (the king) at court to marry him but MC2 immediately refuses. MC2 has been previously married and his husband has died, he also would prefer to marry a soldier given his kingdom is at war. Still, aftet a bit MC2 does try to be kinder.
- {Vampire with Benefits by E. J. Russell} Contemporary, very low angst, more of a comedic adorable book. MC1 is a vampire who has to accept the match given to him by the Supernatural selection institute or he will be killed, MC2 is a werebeaver who is looking for a match after his old lover left him. Instant dislike but also quite a lot of attraction and yeah this was just hilariously sweet. Technically they are not arranged to marry (they are not each other's match) but given they marry because of the whole arranged deal I decided to add it here.
- {Wed to the Barbarians by Keira Andrews} Medieval-like world. MC1 is a prince who enjoys reading smut novels and saving birds. MC2 is the son of the chief of a northern kingdom just now opening its borders. MC1 finds out of the marriage a day before it and is not too happy about it, also MC2 treats him quite harshly as he despises the fact that MC1 looks so weak. In reality MC2 agrees to marry MC1 because of a political plot which really amps up the angst. The book has a bit of initial angst regarding the marriage, with the bulk of it then happening after MC2 falls for MC1. Also a lot of insta lust moments from MC1.
- {A strange and stubborn endurance by Meadows Foz} Fantasy, MC1 and MC2 marry for an alliance between nations. MC1 comes from a homophobic society and he knew nothing of the marriage until he has to leave to join MC2, while MC2 agreed to marry. The story is mainly revolving around an assassination attempt plot, and has minimal tension and angst between the characters. There is a bit of tension at the beginning because MC1 was sexually assaulted by his previous lover and afraid that the same would happen to him with MC2, but I think the tension only lasts for the first 30% of the book or less. Generally the relationship is quite low angst after the start, and sweet.
- {The replacement husband by Eliot Grayson} Historical (regency I think?) with magic, where some men are blessed by the Goddess, which means that they can marry other men and in return the goddess will bless their husbands. This is more of a marriage of necessity/convenience. MC1 is seduced by MC2's brother, and when MC2's brother leave him after ruining his reputation, MC2 decides to step in and marry MC1. I admit I did not finish it, it felt very sweet and low angst.
- {The reluctant husband by Eliot Grayson} Same universe as the one above. This one is one of my favorite and a beautiful angst-feast! The protagonist is the brother who ruined the reputation of the previous book's protagonist. MC1 is known to be a rake, he seduces and moves on, until he also falls in disgrace when the woman he married asks for a divorce. MC2 is an old school rival/enemy who finds out that MC1 is touched by the goddess and has been hiding it this whole time. MC2 asks MC1 to marry him so he can get the blessing and hopefully save his own sick cousin. Very high animosity, MC2 truly despises MC1, and mistreat him quite a lot.
- {Tournament of Losers by Megan Derr} One of my favorite novels ever. Fantasy (low magic), set in a kingdom where a tournament (of losers) is sometimes instated to decide which people among the commoners will marry some of the nobles of different ranks. MC1 is a dock worker and sometimes sex worker scrambling for money and he decides to partecipate, mainly because all partecipants receive a stipend. One of his clients is MC2 who is actually one of the nobles MC1 could end up marrying if he wins. So this is arranged in the sense that a tournament arranges it, but both the MC love each other's by the time that happens.
- {Quest of Fools by Megan Derr} Same universe as the book above, much lower angst and I admit I could never finish it because the focus was often away from the main characters. MC1 is a commoner with a big family (lots of children) who wins the hand of MC2, a nobleman, at the tournament of losers.
- {Force by Kiki Burelli} Contemporary with magic and werewolves. MC1 is a werewolf who has to marry a witch (MC2) as an old agreement to keep the peace. MC2 has been raised to be the perfect husband and is determined to be so, which ends up in MC1 finding out about the extent of abuse and training MC2 went through. MC1 does not want to marry at all, while MC2 marries thinking that is his only role. It is actually pretty sweet, it starts with some animosity and accidental carelessness from MC1's side but turns quite sweet.
- {Thrust by Kiki Burelli} Same universe as the book above. MC1 (of a close pack to MC of previous book) has been used by his father for a lot of failed matches, mainly as a way to get some gain from other packs and clans. MC2 is a witch who has been in an abusive marriage and is now forced by his family to marry MC1. I could not finish this one, sorry, but this is an enemies to lovers, with a lot of distrust from MC2 in particular.
- {The Infidelity clause by Lisa Oliver} Medieval like world. MC1 is a prince who agrees to marry another prince, MC2, because he knows MC2 is a known libertine. For this reason MC1 added to the contract an infidelity clause and he hopes he will soon see the marriage broken because of it (which will allow his kingdom many benefits). MC2 considers himself only attracted to women and had no idea he is to marry MC1 until the two meets. Extremely low angst regarding the relationship, in the sense that the book almost has insta-attraction and insta-love (literally within two days), I could barely keep up. I admit I could not finish it.
- {Lost and Bound by Eliot Grayson} Contemporary, werewolves. More of a bond of necessity/convenience. MC1 is a werewolf who has been locked up in an experimental facility. When the scientists are done with him they leave him in the cell of MC2, an aggressive werewolf who has been turned into something close to a half-vampire (he does drink blood). The scientists know MC2 will end up killing MC1, but instead MC1 manages to convince MC2 to bond with him. I loved this book, very high angst, so much tension, just wow.
- {Unnatural by Alessandra Hazard} Sci-fi futuristic, omegaverse alpha/alpha, arranged marriage (bond is not an option at least at the start). MC1 is an alpha and a prince and he has to marry MC2 (senator of a nearby country) to keep the peace of the planet. MC1 has always preferred alpha or beta lovers so he chooses MC2, who is only pretending to be a beta (he is an alpha). The marriage is arranged, and there is an immediate distaste and dislike. Unfortunately the book ended up in a strange and weird place. It is revealed that MC1 was always an omega and has been genetically modified by his father in an attempt to make him an alpha. He still stays an alpha at the end of the book, but I felt like it went against the whole premise.
- {Omega required by Dessa Lux} Contemporary omegaverse werewolves alpha/omega, arranged marriage that is arranged between the two characters themselves. MC1 is a medical student who wants to work with humans, but because he is an alpha he can only do so if he has a pack or a mate. MC2 is an omega resting in a facility after his previous pack and mate abused him. They decide to marry for convenience, and it is a very very sweet, low angst book (as much as I could read). Insta-trust as well.
- {Honeythorn by Marina Vivancos} Historical (regency) omegaverse alpha/omega. MC1 is an omega who is sent into another country to marry MC2 (an alpha) who is known to be a bit of a recluse. They both are part of the nobility. The building of trust was pretty quick, so I did not manage to finish it, but I think if you are looking for a relatively low angst sweet story this might be it. Arranged marriage and both are pretty okay with it. Also if I am not wrong, in this omegaverse the omega needs constant care/attention from the alpha or they will feel sick.
- {Cherryvine by Marina Vivancos} Same world as the one before. MC1 is an omega whose husband died (and whose husband was absent, negligent and abusive) and he moves to marry MC2 who is an alpha and very patient in gaining MC1's trust.

An extraordinary DNA breakthrough in the case of a mystery man hit and killed by a train in Perth 26 years ago could revolutionise the way police solve cold cases.
Using groundbreaking genetic genealogy technology, WA Police have ended a near three-decades long riddle by putting a name to the man found on a set of train tracks on March 7, 1998.
He can now be revealed for the first time as 20-year-old Mark Peter Dixon, from New South Wales.
Mr Dixon’s name, age and where he came from, had remained a total mystery after he was struck by a train between Burswood and Victoria Park stations.
Despite extensive inquiries over the past 26 years — and the case even being broadcast on Australia’s Most Wanted — his identity remained an enigma.
But a dedicated new team at the WA Police special crime squad has now cracked the case using genetic genealogy — the same technological advancement recently used to catch the infamous Golden State Killer in the US.
The technique involves investigators using genealogy websites — such as GEDmatch.com — in an effort to match a person’s DNA to any potential relatives.
In this case, officers from the newly-formed investigative genetic genealogy team (IGG) uploaded the mystery man’s DNA to GEDmatch in November, as part of a fresh inquiry into his case called Operation Skyvent.
From there they spent several months piecing together a family tree of Mr Dixon’s potential relatives — some of whom lived as far back as 1784.
By meticulously building a picture of his ancestry, from a starting point of about 2000 people, the IGG team were finally able to give Mr Dixon a name.
In an exclusive interview with The West Australian this week, the IGG team members who helped solve the mystery said they were confident this was just the beginning of genetic genealogy cracking cold cases.
Officers are now urging members of the public to get on board and upload their DNA onto sites such as GEDmatch.com to help solve historical cases not just in Australia, but around the world.
“For this to be successful, we need the public on board,” Det-Sgt Darren Bethell said.
“(In order) for law enforcement to be effective, it’s a partnership between us and the community.
“This is a great new tool . . . but at times we need the community, and this is one of those moments.”
Det-Sgt Bethell said WA Police were leading the charge, from an genetic genealogy investigative standpoint.
“We are the only dedicated IGG team in Australia, but others are starting to form,” he said.
The incredible breakthrough in Mr Dixon’s case has come as a huge relief to WA Police officer Jen Robinson.
She investigated his tragic death in 1998 — even helping to organise his funeral because there was simply nobody else to bury him.

“My biggest fear was that I was going to retire and this case wasn’t going to be solved,” she said.

Such is the excitement about the potential for genetic genealogy to solve other cases, The West can reveal the IGG team is currently working on 18 other cases at present — some of which are murder investigations and unsolved sex assault cases.
Police say they are making excellent progress on as many as eight of those 18 cases.
Nikki Bailey, a senior constable with the IGG team, said being able to solve serious cases using new technology was incredibly rewarding.
“It’s amazing to be able to give a family closure for a loved one that’s been lost,” she said.
“But we’re also dealing with sexual assaults and homicides, and again, (its) very rewarding to be able to give the families of the victims of those kinds of crimes closure as well.”

No, I do not mean being on the receiving end as someone goes down on you. Sex seems to be popular in fiction these days, if the shitty Fifty Shades of Grey is any indication, and I sorely, desperately wish what I was about to write was all fiction. Then I could sprinkle some gratuitous sex on it, go to a publisher, and hope that it would sell. Then I would be not risking my job altogether sharing this so that strangers on the Internet would at least know of my suffering in having to watch human beings die brutal, bloody deaths to satisfy a desire even more primal than sex and far less pleasurable.
Yes, I’m talking about eating. And about being literally, bona fide eaten. An incredulous notion in modern society, where we live in concrete houses and walk on asphalt streets. Where the animals we encounter are anywhere between little quacking ducks and crotch-high geese. We live free of our early ancestor’s fear of becoming something else’s food. Crocodile, tiger, lion - pick your customer. It, in most cases, starts with the intense pressure of clamp-strong jaws, driving teeth into parts of your body where teeth should not be stabbing into. Depending on how lucky you are, there will likely be hellish pain lasting anywhere from seconds to minutes (that I am willing to bet feels much longer) before death takes you. What happens to your consciousness after that is a popular debate. What happens to your body is not. You get chewed into a consistency similar to hamburger patties in some cases, swallowed whole in others. Different vehicles to the same destination of an acidic stomach. Your useful parts are broken down into a mushy soup. The rest are ejected from the back end.
A shitty way to go, literally and metaphorically. A living human being, full of emotions and dreams and hope, turned into lifeless steak, soup then shit. At least three out of five young men and women whose last days I will recount below went that way. The other two… well, let’s say that it has been three weeks at this time of writing, and I do not have much hope.
The day started with Matthew dropping several paper files in beige covers on my desk. When I opened it and saw a report complete with pictures of grinning people on the first page, I knew right there and then that it was going to be anything but a normal day at work.
“Missing?” I asked, eyebrows raising. It was the single possibility. Police could have pictures on their desks for all kinds of stuff, but not us rangers. Only then did I notice the tight line Matthew’s lips had pressed into.
“Not like that, no.” He shook his head. “None of them got lost. All five came down here from Sydney, stayed at Winston Ward’s place. That’s Ward’s daughter, Madeleine.” His fingers pressed on the picture of a girl at the top of the page. Hair dyed blue and with the brightest smile of the bunch, I noticed. “She and one other, Cathy, their Indigenous guide, are the two still missing.” Matthew pointed next to the picture below Madeleine. Cathy was dark-skinned and had a hiking stick resting above her shoulder, clearly posing for some sort of promotional photo. “And these three, well…”
I took a quick glance at the other photos. Steve Wilson had the build of a runner, wiry and dressed in a tank top to match. Lisa Mooney, blonde with gold-rimmed glasses. Ashley Lo - his curly dark hair tied back into a ponytail. I knew I would not have to pay extra-close attention to their appearance. Two missing.
“I don’t know, man. Kind of wanted your input on it, too.” Matthew shook his head. “Best you see it for yourself. The police could not decide if it was murder or an animal attack, so they requested us. Found all three of them ripped apart. Caught, well, a suspect, I suppose, on their own cam-”
“You kidding? A suspect and they could not decide if it’s an animal attack or not?”
“I know, Tom, watch it for yourself and tell me I’m not crazy. Hells, they didn’t just have the pictures. Caught the damned killings on film, and still can’t decide if he, it - whatever - is man or animal. I will send the footage over in a bit. Some photos are in there, too. Just don’t puke up your breakfast. I’m seriously thinking of going vegan.”

I frowned. Matthew could not wait for someone to share his hell, I supposed, and quickly retreated back into his office, leaving me alone with the papers.

Winston Ward, your typical real estate rich guy, bought some bushland last year next to our park. His plan was straightforward - setting up lavish air-conditioned bungalows amidst the Australian bush, complete with five-star hotel facilities such as private pools and a fine dining restaurant. A luxury retreat amidst trees and shrubs, letting you enjoy the best of nature and avoiding the worst. No insect stings, soaking rains or blistering heat that the normal campers had to suffer. Just a couple of hours drive from Sydney to boot. All well and good, except for the fact that it came alarmingly close to intruding on national park’s land. So Parks and Wildlife Service took notice and kept a close eye on Ward’s project. So far, even though he has not opened his retreat and nothing illegal had been done, Ward became a popular name among us rangers. Just in case.
I certainly did not expect his name - or his family’s name, rather - to come up this way.
It had been Ashley’s idea. An Ecology graduate, he wanted to make a documentary about Aboriginal people’s way of sustainable living among nature. He got his girlfriend, Madeleine Ward, into it, alongside fellow graduates Steve and Lisa. Madeleine easily secured the filming spot with her father. They hired Cathy as the expert for the film, and the five of them occupied two bungalows. Living in the lap of luxury while trying to promote sustainability. Three cameras were installed. Two security cams for each bungalow, expectedly. The third was a camera trap, the kind used on wildlife trails to capture pictures and videos of animals. Likely intended for fun.
As much as I respect the purpose of their never-finished documentary, I find twenty six-year-old Ashley rather hypocritical, and rather gross given how Madeleine only turned eighteen three months ago. But not to speak ill of the dead, I suppose.
I braced myself as I turned the page for the photos, and failed to stop the dry-heave that came up. Three bodies, gnawed clean of flesh. Strands of dark curly hair on the first mangled head identified it as Ashley’s. The skull was smashed open, its insides, empty where a brain had been licked clean, caked with dried blood. Shattered pieces of his bones were strewn over muddy soil, brown rain water filling in troughs where the marrow that had been sucked out. Steve and Lisa was in roughly a familiar state, and I shivered at how disturbingly clean the bones were. Take away the skull that clearly showed the remains to be human, and it could have been a smokehouse’s dump - filled with finished ribs and chicken wings.
And yet, the final photo proved even more unsettling.
It was a still taken from one of the security cameras. At night, judging from the grey filter. It was still bright enough, however, for me to make out the grassy front of a bungalow. Bushes and shrubs lined the far end. A dark figure loomed over them, casting a long shadow.
I shivered once more.
I had walked into the bushes hundreds, if not thousands, of times. I knew how dense they could be - reaching up to your chests in many places. That figure - standing on two legs with long arms drooping at its side - barely had its knees covered by the shrubs. The photo, even though grainy, was clear enough for me to make out a domed head resting upon a neck so thick the figure might as well be said to lack one. Matching broad shoulders held up that neck, deltoids bulging. The… thing, apparently, had little hair as far as I could see.
I did not notice how hard I had clenched my jaws until a cramp-like pain made me grunt. Matthew could not be fucking with me, could he? I had worked with the guy for years. I called the local police station. The woman on the other end confirmed it. Unless a whole station was in on the prank with Matthew - an idea equally impossible as what I was seeing - it seemed like we had won the reverse lottery of missing and dead people cases.
As much as the Internet likes to make fun of its deadly wildlife, most of Australia has no large land predators. Dingoes are pretty much your average dog. The huge crocs live way too far to the north and sharks do not magically appear in the middle of bushlands. Neither looked like some psychopathic, cannibalistic basketball player wearing a shaved-clean, badly proportioned gorilla suit. The police’s best option was us, I could tell, but as far as me and Matthew went, we were equally clueless.
I shook my head and rubbed my temples - for a moment questioning my sense of reality. That was until an alert jabbed into the screen of my desktop. Matthew’s email.
Here is the footage, Tom. Crazy stuff. I got them to send us a scan of Madeleine’s journal, too. Found where those kids were seen last.
An unholy amount of files came in a link he attached.
The rest of my day was spent going through them all. I still know not what to make of what I saw, and I need time to collect myself before I can write of what I have seen on those tapes.

Before I get started I wanted to say there was no cheating or emotional manipulation (I hope?) involved. I'm relatively new to dating casually as I had always imagined marrying the person I was dating and thought it would take 1, maybe 2 tries max. After a few bad relationships I realized maybe I wasn't ready to be in one and decided I'd focus on myself and maybe casually date at most (hookups, occasional romantic dates, etc.).
The girl in question (I'll call her Jen) that I was with for a short amount of time is a coworker to both me and my partner (I'll call her Lisa). We all work for the same company, but they are closer as friends because they work on the same team. I had spent time with Jen for about a month or two and thought I might have liked her despite a lot of differences in our interests and personalities. But she ended up turning down my suggestion of possibly being more than just friends, and I was okay with it because I was having fun being single anyways and we had continued being friends and I don't believe there was any awkwardness in our relationship moving forward and there hasn't been any lingering feelings for each other because it was so casual. Also, we never had sex, but we did kiss so I'm bringing this up for my question later.
At one point we had a group outing involving me, Jen, Lisa, and another friend. This created a friend group that I still occasionally hang out with and have done fun outings including some of my other friends, and this is how I started hanging out with Lisa. We had a shared interest event that I invited the group to individually and none of them could make it, but Lisa did end up saying yes to another unrelated outing and we really clicked. Lisa and I had begun hanging out around 2 months after Jen and I decided we would just remain friends. I started spending time with Lisa almost every day because she ended up having a ton of things in common with me to the point where we were basically the same person when we would share details of our lives. It took a couple months to realize we had differences, all this being a silly exaggerated joke to simply explain that this girl is my soulmate and I have been loving everything about her since dating her.
It's only been about 6 months but now things are getting more serious and us dating has been the best relationship I've ever been in, so I wanted to make sure I do things right and be completely open and honest with her. Honesty has never been an issue with me because I'm a very open book, but when it comes to my feelings I've had trouble being open in the past and don't want to make that mistake in my current relationship. I just wanted to know the best way to bring up the past fling with Jen to make sure I'm not lying to her by omission by not disclosing a past situationship(?) with her closest coworker friend. I hadn't thought it was worth bringing up because I hadn't previously thought about anybody my partners had been dating before me because it didn't seem relevant because she was happy with me and that's all that mattered. A genie appears to you and says it’s always wanted to make a blockbuster film. It’s made a separate bargain with a studio guaranteeing distribution and marketing, has a famous director locked in, a composer to do the score, and all the production crew and equipment lined up. But it needs a subject.
You have to pick a specific person, living or dead, and a specific two hours from that person’s life.
The genie’s magic cameras and mics can capture anything that person could have seen or heard during the two hours, so if they’re standing somewhere the cameras can capture a full 360° view around them, including them in the shot or not as desired, but your film subject won’t be aware of any equipment and nothing will interfere with the events that occurred. An update on the bill - it has now passed the lower house, with some amendments from the government - and has been introduced into the upper house.
Of note, the Bill is supported the Labor Government, Opposed by the Liberals and the Nationals have a conscience vote. Bill passed second reading on Wednesday 8th May 50 ayes to 3 noes - both Liberals, and one National voted no. Bill passed third reading on Thursday 9th May 42 ayes to 3 noes and a pairing (meaning numbers would have probably been 43 to 4). Noes were 2 Liberal, 1 (or 2) Nationals.
An attempt was made to delay bill to 20 June by Mia Davies, to give Liberals and Nationals more time to consider the bill, but it was rejected. Mia Davies voted for the bill in second and third readings.
Some more information came from the Attorney-General about the bill. There will be 6 month implementation time for the bill, meaning 6 months or less from royal assent people will be able to use the new process. At 3 year review a focus will be on adding more descriptors in addition to male, female, non-binary or indeterminate.
As an amendment it clarified the BDM register will continue to have a record of original sex at birth - which can be corrected by a doctor. After making a change to gender you can have a birth certificate extract show only gender or both sex at birth and gender, and can decide whether to show just show the most up-to-date gender or that and the whole history. There was also an amendment that added protections for will, deeds and probate, so - for example - if someone who is trans feminine and has changed their gender legally will still be able to claim a part of the will given to "my firstborn son".

Who wants to hear about a young girl's medical emergency? And to top it off, Charles casually mentions how four random people from their town had to help shove her jaw back together. Disgusting.
But the real scumbags of the day are Mike and Carol from The Brady Bunch. In a recent YouTube video, Mike gleefully recounts the terrifying moment when Cindy had to take cover inside their home during a drive-by shooting. Are you fucking serious, Mike? Your daughter was in a life-threatening situation, and all you can do is film it for YouTube views? You are a despicable excuse for a father.

Many are aware of the way VPR has suffered this season due to production involvement. Going into the reunion tonight, I think it’s worth considering Lisa’s unseen influence over what could have been a more organic—and enjoyable—falling out of the scandal from last season. In the past, fans have pointed out how Lisa has continuously minimized and capitalized off of her male employees’ “bad boy” behavior (rampant cheating and womanizing, among other things) while punishing the women under her, and covertly pitting them against each other. As time went on, Lisa promoted the Toms, despite their laziness, immaturity, and lack of experience. (Schwartz had no experience as a bartender: Katie had to beg for Lisa to hire him. He was unable to even complete a single shift without walking out). Despite Katie’s background in hospitality (having grown up working in her mother’s restaurant) and Ariana’s intelligence and skills (for those who remember, Ariana won competitions at VPR for best bartending), Lisa gave the Toms a combined 10% stake in TomTom.
This season, however, Lisa’s carefully crafted image as a beneficent mother figure is not holding up. Despite what Ariana went through last season, I can’t remember a single recorded scene in which we see LVP supporting Ariana, who has a history of depression, but we do see Lisa make use of her brother’s mental illness and tragic death to garner sympathy for Sandoval (who didn’t just betray Ariana, but lied to everyone extensively, including Rachel—who he allegedly recorded in a sex act without consent—and then acted in a disgusting way afterwards, comparing himself to George Floyd, etc.). Obviously, this interference had the effect of making the show feel “over produced.” If the producers were to follow a more natural falling out from the scandal--one in which there would have been an appropriate acknowledgment of the depth of Tom’s betrayal--Lisa would risk profiting off Tom’s image.
Those who recall Lisa’s stint on “The Real Housewives” know that she is not above tearing other women down if it benefits her interests; many are now speculating that she is trying to sabotage Something About Her using her associate, Penny, and possibly even being involved in all the red tape they were having with the city. How else are we to understand Lisa’s aggressive and undermining comments, during the reunion clips, about the restaurant and it’s delayed opening due to Ariana’s stint with DWTS, despite Katie’s reassurance of the contrary. I’d keep this context in mind as we go into the reunion tonight, during which we will no doubt continue to see Ariana’s alienation by a cast of women who have been manipulated to turn against her for the benefit of those who make a living off of Sandoval’s image: the producers (particularly Lisa). Lisa’s hypocrisy season and her blind support for the idiot horse she bet on in this game (Sandoval), has made the season over produced and unwatchable.

We know none of the Belcher kids like sports much and really neither do Bob or Linda for that matter. But Louise loves fighting, violence and kicking ass. I think hockey would be great for her. Especially since too, hockey comes up every known and then in the background of Bob's Burgers. Mostly through Teddy.
In this episode Teddy needs Bob to stand in as the replacement cook at the hockey rink during a weekend hockey tournament. It's a tournament that features both youth and adult divisions.
Louise witnesses the girls hockey and sees them checking, and hitting and taking bad penalties and wants to try it.
Tina meets an older hockey boy and of course keeps trying to sneak into the boys locker room. Zeke plays on said boy's hockey team and brings Jimmy Jr with him for support. Tina still like Jimmy Jr. but is conflicted with this hockey boy (who of course has no idea Tina exists).
Gene discovers the organ player and the organ and wants to play. The organist is a cranky old guy and the organ is over a hundred years old. The organist won't let Gene touch it but of course he is determined just to play one song.
Also we see Teddy and the Mighty Schmucks play. Teddy turns out to actually be good at hockey much to everyone's surprise. Also the rest of the Might Schmucks are aware Teddy isn't Jewish but keep him on the team because he is good. Teddy has no idea they know.
Of course Bob and Linda are overwhelmed by the food orders. Linda leaves Bob to fend for himself while she chats with the hockey moms (who to add further confusion about where Bob's Burgers takes place all have Minnesotan accents "Don't cha Know").
Finally before anyone says "Hockey is an expensive sport and the Belchers are poor, no way Louise can afford to play." This is a cartoon and if Homer and Marge can have both Bart and Lisa playing hockey, than Bob and Linda can pay for Louise to play.

I’m (30m) an IT consultant. I was recently dumped by my girlfriend of 4 years (27f) after a series of silly arguments. She was hands down the prettiest girlfriend I’ve ever had and the only one I could see myself marrying, so losing her has been really hard on me.
Anyway, so I’m back on the prowl. I hate tindeonline dating because a. It’s demoralizing (I’m not ugly but no looker), b. I’m looking for a new girlfriend rather than just hookup and I find most girls I match with aren’t my type, and c. the girls on apps who also prefer relationship rather than hookup are too pushy and obsessed with getting married. I find them desperate.
Anyway, so I prefer good old-fashioned “cold approach”. I’m kind of a late bloomer when it comes to dating, but I improved myself (worked out, wore contact lenses, got ears pierced, new haircut, strong cologne) after college and became more confident (which was how I landed my ex, who was probably way out of my league if we were still in school). I’m hoping to replicate that, so since my breakup, I’m back hitting up bars near college campuses both near where I live and whenever I go on business trips/weekenders. Most of my advances fail, but I’ve probably gotten a lot more shameless as I’ve aged and no longer fear or even care about rejections even from the prettiest girls.
I flew out of town 3 weeks ago for work and went to hooters for a quick bite right before my flight back. It was like almost 3 in the afternoon on a weekday and the place was dead. No hostess. Just a sign that said “seat yourself.” My waitress (let’s call her Lisa) was sweet, cute, wholesome in the girl-next-door way tho, so she more than made up for the bad food and dead vibe. She’s a pretty brunette and what stood out in her uniform was she had a huge round ass (what I would call “pawg” we’re both white btw). I started openly flirting with her right away, but with little expectation (I knew a lot of guys probably do the same and she’s probably just obligated to be nice and put up with it). We did have plenty of opportunities to talk. She told me she’s in community college, but hoping to transfer. She IDed me, so she knew I was 30 (I made a joke about that). She said she grew up in a very small town in Pennsylvania. Is a procrastinator and a secret slob (her apartment was a mess). She also voluntarily told me she would be working the next day if I wanted to come; I told her I was leaving town that evening.
Anyway, I felt like we clicked sufficiently but perhaps not enough to get her number, so I asked for her Instagram before I left, thinking most creepy old guys that hit on her at work probably don’t even have Instagram and would go for number. She gave it to me and I requested her at the airport. I also tipped her $10, which was good but not exorbitant. I didn’t want to seem desperate or trying to buy her. By the time I landed, she had accepted and requested to follow me back. All her photos have 500-700 likes despite her account being private.
Now my Instagram was dead prior to meeting my ex and most of my “cool friends” are her friends (they’re all ghosting me now). After we broke up, I archived all our pics together, but kept pics with her friends and group pics with her in them because I rarely take pics with others (my coworkers are all nerds and I don’t socialize with them). I also bought 4k followers before I met my ex and almost all my real followers (around 300) and likes are from her friends.
Anyway, I messaged Lisa the next morning on Instagram saying it was lovely to meet her and wishing her luck at work. I also ordered a bouquet of flowers to be delivered to her job. She messaged me back that evening thanking me and said the flowers were amazing.
By that point, I was totally smitten with her and crushing hard, but I tried to play it cool especially because we live in different states. We started messaging off and on almost everyday (sometimes she would ghost me for a day but I never do) and I made plans to visit for a weekend before the end of her semester. I went again last weekend, hung out with her at work on another dead afternoon shift and then took her out on a fancy date. I didn’t even care that she was underdressed (she had changed into tank top and jean shorts after her shift, she didn’t have time to go home) while I wore a tailor-made suit. We then spent a beautiful night together kissing and talking about our high school experience and past relationships and eventually had sex.
I had to fly home the next day and we got coffee and breakfast together before I left. I invited her to come stay with me part of the summer and maybe vacation together and she said she’d love to.
I was on cloud 9 when I got on the plane. Yet she suddenly became distant and unresponsive. I finally confronted her about it yesterday by phone and she said it’s because I seem weird and a bit shady and insincere. She said she noticed I was losing a lot of followers everyday (more and more of my ex’s friends are unfollowing me), that most of my followers are bots, that my photos have very few likes (50-70), and those raised red flags for her. She also thinks I’m showing off my money and not as rich as I pretend to be. I tried to defend myself, even came clean and told her I barely had a social life in college and high school and didn’t get to interact with any pretty and popular girls until I met my ex, but that only made her feel sorry for me and look down on me more. She also finds it creepy that I follow Olivia Dunne and a lot of other college influencers. I got really upset and asked her if it was because my sexual performance didn’t measure up. She said it wasn’t the case.
Anyway, I woke up this morning and she unfollowed me, so that was that. I won’t embarrass myself by contacting her again. But I’m a total mess emotionally like I’m 16 all over again when no girl wanted me. I even called my ex crying uncontrollably and she had to comfort me. I hate myself for being like this. Please help me get through this
