2023.06.10 06:09 KopOut Question about severing roots (Mahogany Trees)

I have two Mahogany trees in my front yard in south Florida that are about 40+ years old I think based on when the house was built. I got a quote to trim them and the certified arborist that was providing the quote suggested that I cut the roots by the sidewalk because they are pushing up the sidewalk (an inch or less for now). He said this will help control that. I have only owned the house for a few years, but I would guess this has been a recurring problem. One tree is probably 4-5 feet from the sidewalk and the other is probably less than 2 feet from it.
Here are my questions about doing this:
  1. Will it kill the tree or a portion of it? He said it wouldn’t but I’m prewired to be very skeptical.
  2. Won’t this weaken the trees’ stability in high winds (hurricane season is just starting here)? Furthermore because the roots are to be cut by the sidewalk, won’t that just make the tree more likely to fall toward my house if it becomes uprooted? Especially the tree so close to the sidewalk? The trees are in my yard between the sidewalk and my house.
  3. Presumably if you don’t pull the severed root out of the ground, the sidewalk won’t really level out, right? It may just slow down the problem.
The company comes highly recommended for their trimming so I’m not concerned about that part at all but I am wondering if severing roots like this is maybe a little more risky than he made it sound. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Pups are Seymour Duncan, electronics are the prewired Emerson Custom 5-way switch with the CTS blender pot. String trees are next.

2023.01.26 01:31 bigw86 I have a Christmas tree setup to Meross smart plug. Could it be causing lights to blow out?

My wife just texted me saying that another strand of lights blew on the tree. The tree is prewired and it’s the 2nd strand to go as I’ve already replaced fuses on another strand. Could the smart plug be causing these issues or no? I have them setup to an automation to come on when my wife comes home.

2022.01.13 00:43 southfanning Need help with an LED lamp

Need help with an LED lamp
I'm building a lamp that will have around 20 separate LEDs. Not a strip, but individual LEDs with inline resistors.
I'm trying to figure out what I need as far as making a lamp usable as a ceiling light wired to 120v. I was looking at an LED driver but it's been 20yrs since my last circuits class and I don't want to guess.
AC driver
The LEDs are Forward Voltage: DC 12V / Forward Current: 20mA ; Prewired LED For DC 12V (Preloaded 1/4w Metal Film Resistor)
They'll basically be wired into a tree root design and wired as a ceiling light.
Appreciate any advice

2021.02.07 21:28 Rich-SS Bed and Nozzle not Heating Up Anymore!!

Hello, I have a CR-10 V1, and I recently swapped out the motherboard to a SKR Mini E3 V2 so I had a more up to date base to do some other mods. I installed the board and updated firmware to the current Marlin and it was working fine. I recently purchased a BLTouch and was having tons of problems, and no firmware seemed to work. After a couple of days with no luck, I noticed the prewired harness from the motherboard to the BLTouch was backwards on the BLTouch end, in the right order, but backwards. I removed the wires and repinned them correctly and so far its working fine. The problem I've ran into now is the bed and the nozzle toesnt seem to get hot. When I run heat for PLA i get error message saying heating failed, as the bed temps weren't moving at all. I tried a few different ways with the same results, and once when I just heated the bed by itself, I got it to actually heat up but it passed the setpoint and kept going so I unplugged it. I haven't gotten anywhere with the nozzle yet though. I'm kinda thinking its a firmware issue but not sure. The firmware I'm using is

BIGTREETECH-SKR-mini-E3/firmware/V2.0/firmware-ender5-bltouch-for-z-homing.bin

So I'm not sure how to proceed from here. Any advise will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

2020.10.30 01:15 stevensokulski Does anyone here use plug-in switches to control non-dimming loads?

Hey! So I have a few things that I'd like to automate using smart switches, like a neon sign and a prewired Christmas tree.
Both work just fine if I leave their switches in the "on" state and unplug them and plug them back in.
What I'm wondering is if I could use them with com thing like the VOCOlinc plug-in switch. Is the relay on a switch like that a clean cut, or does it ramp at all?
