2024.05.17 00:31 letstalkaboutsax A Letter to You All

This year has been one of the worst of my life. After I suffered years worth of horrendous abuse by birth family, I have finally escaped and am surrounded by people who love me. I have a chosen family now who openly call me their daughter and my best friend of 20 years is now my brother, just like it was meant to be. I have promised that kid for years that I will be right next door someday, but now I live in the *room* right next to him. These people have lived in squalor for all their lives, but they took me in without question or expectations outside of their wants for me to be happy and safe. They came all the way from Texas to break me out of my prison in Indiana - and for the first few months I was here, it was paradise. I live with two incredibly loving parents, my brother, and their two amazing grandchildren whom came to us after a family tragedy. I've had the time of my life, being a "mom". Those kids are everything to me - it's been a dream to become part of this family. We have had to go without a lot, but the material things just don't matter if they are with me.
I have always been a little sickly, but until this year, I was still able-bodied enough to work, to care for my family, and to keep our household afloat. In 2020, I caught Covid and since then, my health slowly declined. The virus kicked Multiple Sclerosis and a bingo-card's worth of autoimmune disorders into hyperdrive. At the tail end of October and beginning of November of last year, I started to become gravely ill. I was hospitalized in the ICU for my first visit and have been admitted twice for a few days since then due to severe dehydration from not being able to tolerate water. I've recently been diagnosed with a disease called Gastroparesis - which has paralyzed some nerves in my stomach: solid food will not longer empty out of my gut and it causes me to be sick. I have been on a liquid diet since November. I can no longer work, eat solid food, and have immense trouble doing basic things like showering, laundry, even brushing my hair hurts. At my worst, I could not stand up off of the floor when I was on my hands and knees, or get out of my bed without someone picking me up. I started out at 210lbs and am now 114. I've (dramatically, I know) felt like I was going to die. I am only 29 and felt like 30 might not be in my cards.
While I was in the ICU, someone on my care team suggested that I reach out to groups on Reddit. I didn't expect much, as I know the world is in such a terrible state right now, but since the very second I asked for help, the outreach from all of you has been mind blowing and has not stopped since. I've met so many people with my diagnoses, I have made an incredibly amazing friend from someone who has helped me since I first fell so ill. I've connected with so many good people, that I now have so many people who support me that I have lost count: and they all came from Reddit. For anything I could possibly need help with, all I've had to do is ask, and someone has answered.
Protein shakes are so expensive - nearly 30 bucks for the premades and my family simply doesn't have the means to get them. There have been so many things I've needed, outside of the shakes, that this sub has given me without a single condition attached. The first wishlist I shared was completed. Someone has given me a bed, because I was sleeping on a thin foam pad with blankets. They've given me food, clothes, medicine... I have even been given so many treats simply because they thought it would bring a smile to my face. I had nothing but the clothes on my back and my kitty when I got here: you have all single-handed helped me begin my life anew in my forever home.
Today, I had to make a post requesting some protein shakes. In less than two hours, I had all that I asked for and someone even bought me a blender, so that I can invest in the powdered form of drinks instead of the premade formulas which are significantly cheaper, will last longer, and are realistically in my price range. I've sat here with tears in my eyes, just blown away by the generosity I was met with today as a continuation of the selflessness that is in abundance in this community. I should have more than enough to get me through until June, when I am supposed to get a drug called Reglan that will help me reintroduce solid food into my diet.
You are all so, so very amazing. I am not kidding when I say that this sub has kept me - and my family - alive. You've all taught me so much in lessons of kindness and generosity. I am looking around my room now and your care surrounds me. As soon as I am able, I will step on the other side of the fence and repay the kindness you have all so unconditionally extended. I've received so much helpful advice and support for so many things, that I can't even begin to put into words how thankful and lucky I am. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. If the world would unite like we do here, it would become heaven on Earth.
Y'all have no idea how thankful I truly am. Sorry for rambling, but you all deserve so much gratitude than words on a screen can express.

2024.05.17 00:26 Sleepy_ninja_70 Unsure of Next Steps

Pixie, my 14 month old old husky/heeler mix, has been having issues since the day we brought her home at 5 weeks old (not my choice to bring her home that early).
At first, her stomach was very sensitive and did not adjust well to hard food, but eventually was okay/consistent. She got her shots, was doing well up until she was about 6 months old. She had her first heat, but a week in she began having a lot of pain which led to the diagnosis of a uti. Then a week into her amoxicillin prescription, she had bloody diarrhea. I took her immediately to the vet, in which they did blood panels, xrays, even a fecal float. The only abnormality being her wbc of 36. We hospitalized her overnight and they found blood/puss in her kennel. They believed she had pyometra and opened her up, spaying her immediately.
Over the last 7/8 months since the surgery, it’s been a constant battle to get her to eat. No vomiting/diarrhea/extreme abdominal pain/itchiness. We tried different proteins, different brands, limited ingredient diets- it worked occasionally but back into eating “just enough” shortly after a switch. The last vet gave us various antibiotics and nausea medications, as well as repeated blood panels and tests that still showed “normal” levels.
Within the last month, we have made the switch to a new vet, who got us a prescription probiotic and did an intestinal biopsy. This biopsy revealed inflammation, seemingly due to allergens/hypersensitivities, but also could be due to parasites. We were given a hydrolyzed diet (currently transitioning to from a limited ingredient salmon + brown rice) and a prescription probiotic. She has shown slow improvement, but I am very worried she will give up on this food if it isnt helping “fast enough”.
This morning she had one large “slushy” diarrhea that she seemed very relieved to get out? It was 3x the size of her normal stool, had mucus but no blood, and was regular colored. She almost immediately came inside to pick at food we had to convince her to eat just last night. Our vet is giving us a paste and a dewormer just to rule out any parasites (like whipworm, which is the only one her prevention doesn’t cover). Wanting to know if theres anything else to look out for here, or that we should bring up with our vet? I also want to know if this is common with the transition to a hydrolyzed diet, since I’m not sure what to expect/what the timeline would be.

2024.05.16 21:32 NellyFrittat Brought a kitten home from Puerto Rico and behavior has changed drastically

He’s 16 weeks old and it’s pretty obvious I uprooted him from his original environment.
His initial reactions to being away the first week were really positive! Didn’t seem like he missed being outside at all. Then I noticed he was in the litter more, but wasn’t straining just taking longer.
Then I noticed he’s sleeping 15-20 hours during the day so it’s like he’s not a normal kitten. Before he’d be running around causing trouble and mewing LOUDLY. Now he’s sleeping a lot and seems generally disinterested. This is week 2 btw so it hasn’t even been 3 weeks that he’s been off the Island.
I have a 4yo cat and the first week they fought but became pals. He’s not even interested in fighting with my other cat anymore.
I took him to the vet and they confirmed his stomach flora was messed up (overgrowth) and said it could be a parasite or it’s likely the change in his diet to more protein rich foods.
Parasite test was negative and he’s on Metronidazole and prebiotics to his meals for the next week. His behavior hasn’t really improved. Sometimes he will scamper around or mew loudly, he’s still eating and peeing/pooping.
Is it possible that he is depressed?

I’m 11 weeks and obv no expert but I don’t know anyone pregnant with multiples so wanted to share what’s worked for me in case it helps anyone (and also commiserate a little because wth)
Nausea was bad but not HG.
I also had a question for experienced moms: did y’all really drink regular milkshakes and not develop GD? It sounded ridiculous at first but on extra starving days I see the appeal.

2024.05.16 20:14 letstalkaboutsax Request for protein shakes, severely ill

Hi, folks! I am very sorry to have to reach out for assistance, but I am in a bit of tough situation and need some help. Thank you for taking the time to consider my request: you guys are sincerely the kindest community. Sorry for the long read: just trying to give context.
I have been diagnosed with Gastroparesis caused by Covid and subsequently my multiple sclerosis: the disease paralyzed my vagus nerve and food cannot empty out of my stomach on its own. It has crippled me severely to the point I cannot work, my only income is Prolific (a survey site) and my disability case has yet to be approved. I live with my best friend’s parents who are elderly and also disabled. I am the primary caretaker of the household and losing the capability to work has sincerely put us deep in the throes of poverty. My best friend is autistic and it severely affects his life. They’ve taken me in even though they cannot afford to, to save me from a very abusive situation that has contributed to my condition significantly. I am caring for two young children (their grandchildren) and acting as their parental figure: my family relies heavily on me financially and physically and being so sick has caused so, so much havoc for us all. We are really struggling since I’ve reached such a severe point in my disease. Sometimes I do not have the strength to even get out of my bed.
Since around the end of October, I’ve been on a liquid diet. I can’t eat anything but protein shakes: this is a very big issue, because shakes are VERY expensive. We budget down to the penny and have no money whatsoever to spare. I am not getting the nutrients I need and these shakes are the only thing that will not trigger my GP/the only thing I am safely able to eat. My doctor has tried to give me a prescription for Ensure and Glucerna, but they refuse to pay a cent for either. Food banks here do not seem to ever carry them, though I still check regularly.
By June I should have a medication called Reglan that will help me eat solid food. If this doesn’t work (which my doc fears it may not), I must have a device installed that will stimulate my digestion, but until then, I have to drink whatever I eat. I need to eat 3-4 a day, so they vanish in less than a week.
I’ve made a short Amazon wishlist with the shakes I typically get, but I am not picky about the brand or product. My only specific requests are that they are not the powder mix and the flavor is not coffee or chocolate. I need as many shakes as I can get. If you can find cheaper alternatives elsewhere I’m happy to give you my address.
Thank you for your consideration, it means so much to me and my family. Thank all of you for all that you do for people like me in need.
https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/157IGRMIYQQG7?ref_=wl_share
Edif: got 48 shakes on the way! Thank you all so much for all your care and advice. It means a lot!!

2024.05.16 19:04 NoCurve207 Considering going back down in dosage

I’m on 40 units of semaglutide and it’s been a huge struggle to even get my water in let alone the proper protein. I’m still losing extremely slow maybe .5lb a week at this point with about 20lbs til my GW.
I’m not nauseous per se but I have noticed I get sharp stomach pains and woke up with heartburn often and just general digestion discomfort. I’m on week 10 almost. Has anyone ever just gone down in dosage? Should I just keep on with my dosage now and let my body get used to it? I’ll be going into my 2nd week of this dosage.

Just purchased some but I wanted to know if it actually helps as a substitute for whey protein- it just melts easier in water so I really love it so far but have no clue if i gotta be careful with it or whatever

2024.05.16 18:09 UnusualLeg8389 Suflave prep for first colonoscopy

After anxiously reading colonoscopy prep horror stories, I wanted to share my first experience, which happened this week, to help calm nerves. I have oodles of food allergies and quite a sensitive stomach, so I was bracing for vomiting, nausea, etc. Took first Suflave dose at 5:00 pm and every 15 minutes afterward (4 doses in the first bottle), appt was 9:00 am. Taste was decent and borderline good (refrigeration encouraged), think extra syrupy yellow Gatorade. Belly rumbling started around 5:15, first trip to bathroom around 5:25, and I was clear after only 2 hours afterwards. I did 3 days low residual diet, 1 day clear liquid (thank you bone broth for protein, otherwise I’d be starving, plus drank tons of electrolytes the day before). Second bottle at midnight, every 15 minutes afterwards. Zero nausea, zero vomiting (I didn’t take any anti-nausea pills). I was surprised. The bathroom trips were sudden, but there was never any danger of not making it to the toilet in time. Green jello turned my poo stuff green, so i stuck to lemon jello (since that was the desired color). Overall, I’ve felt worse from eating too much greasy food, and any parents will be familiar with the late night trips disrupting sleep. Seriously not a big deal. The nap during the procedure was wonderful, the gas afterwards was a bit uncomfortable (since they fill you with air), but eating real food again was amazing. While this process was inconvenient, it was not tramatic. Definitely better than finding out you have colon cancer the hard way. Good luck!

2024.05.16 16:46 anonyrats Cat having intermittent diarrhea with mucus and blood (we have seen vets!)

Hello! Firstly: we have seen several veterinarians for this issue and are currently under the care of one and I understand this is not a substitute for care, just seeing if the larger vet community might have some additional insight for this vague/persistent issue.
Info:
• Species: Cat\ • Age: 13ish\ • Sex Neuter status: Female, spayed\ • Breed: Domestic shorthair (calico)\ • Body weight: 12ish lbs\ • History: Intermittent diarrhea outside of litterbox, sometimes with mucus and/or blood (has solid poops in litterbox in between episodes for weeks at a time)\ • Clinical signs: Acts fine otherwise: eats/drinks great, is playful and social. Is physically examined by vet each time there is blood in stool, vet always says she looks great.\ • Duration: About 3 years\ • Your general location: Southeast Texas\ • Links to test results, vet reports, X-rays etc: I have no links but the vet has done a couple of stool sample tests, which have come back normal. Has done bloodwork which was fine. Have not done any X-rays or imaging.
Additional info:
• Vets agree that it is allergies, definite chicken/poultry allergy and maybe something else\ • We have changed diet to chicken/poultry free with minimal ingredients and give probiotic powder daily, both of which seem to help (have tried prescription hydrolized protein diets which seemed to make it worse)\ • She currently gets regular steroid injections about every 8 weeks and has done a couple rounds of antibiotics, which seem to help but are maybe decreasing in efficacy (steroids especially)\ • Was born with about half a tail, kind of like a long bobtail. Read once a while ago (on the internet) that cats with tail mutations can have lower GI issues, not sure how true that is (because internet)\ • Cat tax available upon request (she is very cute)
Mostly posting just to see if there might be something else at play here, or if anyone has suggestions to decrease the number of episodes she has. I hate to think that her stomach is hurting and want to be sure we’re doing everything we can and are chasing the right issue.
Thank you in advance, and thank you all for being veterinarians/techs and doing what you do every day!!

2024.05.16 15:36 Remote-Fly5200 Whey protein or plant protein

Can I try Nakpro plant protein? It's quite popular and budget-friendly. Currently, I'm using As It Is whey protein concentrate, but I want to try something new. I'm not lactose intolerant but need your suggestion.

2024.05.16 15:16 Significant_Willow84 Buffalo Wings

Buffalo Wings is one of my favourite dish of all time, my Mom cook it for me since i was a little child. I love it adding with coated ketchup and spicy to full my stomach. Chicken is the reason why my physique is good, because it has high protein. Since it's my first time to cook this, i bought a friend to help me finish the product and it's so delicious.

2024.05.16 14:50 gikad4 Health anxiety

Thus, today was a little strange. I went to the dentist yesterday to get my broken tooth examined. They smooth things out, but they intend to make repairs in February. I'm not hurting. When I get home, I have a Quest protein bar and a water bottle with a liquid IV flavouring package because I'm too lazy to make lunch. The quest bar actually made me sick to my stomach for some reason. As in, I essentially pissed in my trousers. I'm also having my period, but I didn't wear a tampon because I was getting diarrhoea so frequently—changing it more than once every two hours is terrible.
After lying, sleeping and napping on the couch for three hours, I felt like I was going to crap my pants since my stomach was upset and I didn't have a tampon on for my period. So I got up and hurried to the restroom. And I came dangerously close to passing out. I returned to the couch and lay down. After a few minutes, the ringing in my ears stopped, and I carefully attempted to stand back up. And I had a lot more relief. I consumed two glasses of water and half of a Costco frozen pizza. like how my spouse and I divided it. And yes, I do feel much better. In contrast to them. However, my stomach still aches, and I still feel very exhausted. I've been drifting off and back to sleep on the couch since 12 am as my spouse watches OTT. As of right now, its morning in my local time and am so sleepy.

2024.05.16 14:35 fitmommaR Trouble getting needed protein

Trouble getting needed protein
Y’all I am having so much trouble getting enough protein lately. I’ve been on Zepbound since February and have been successfully getting it through protein drinks and bars along with meats. However now I can hardly stomach any of the protein bars, I have to force myself to eat them.
Not really looking for advice, just needed to complain to people who would understand for a minute 😅😂🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

2024.05.16 14:08 Extension_Band_8138 Your hunger, cravings & satiety anecdotes wanted!

This is a highly exploratory post inspired by some books I delved into recently as well as exfatloss' recent post about satiety (why would salsa and sour cream be such appetite enhancers? What is it about them??).
I guess we sometimes need to engage in knowledge 'fishing expeditions' and just hope some patterns emerge. This is a sub with a lot of first hand experience various food / macro restrictions who pays attention to what they eat and how they feel about it more than the general population.
Please share your accounts of various cravings / satiety experiences while on different restricted diets. It can be something you experience now or have experienced in the past. It can be something you have noticed in your pets or farm animals (we're not that different from them after all!). It can be transient, or something you experience your whole life. I would like to collect these hunge satiety narratives.
Give as much background as you can remember - what was your diet (approx macros, types of food). How long did craving / satiety last? Did you give into it? Does it drive you to overeat / undereat? Did it feel like the mental 'want' was disconected from physical intake (ie. My stomach is distended from overeating, but still crave some more)? How long does the drive to eat / avoid food lasts? What was your energy / mood levels at the time? Do you have any medical conditions that may influence it? Were you taking any drugs or supplements at the time? What is your hunch on why the craving / satiety happened? What are the most delicious things you've ever tasted? If you had them repeatedly, would they lose appeal? What foods feel satisfying? What foods make you not able to take another bite?
To have any chance at patterns emerging, I'd prefer us to stick to natural products driving cravings / satiety or minimally processed foods. For processed food, please indicate the ingredients on it, including any fortification that may apply in your country. The more complex the ingredient list, the harder it will be!
We know so little of how hunger, satiety and cravings work, and yet it is so important. This interplay of 'feelings' ensures an animal (incl we) can meet its energy needs and (more impressively!) get a huge array of chemicals needed to buid and maintain its body structures and keep going a huge number of chemical processes going.
Given access to a variety of (natural) food - hunger, satiety and cravings manage to get this 'procurement' system going to astonishing precision. How?
What things can a body trigger cravings for? Is it just minerals? Macros? Amino acids? Types of fat? When does satiety kick in? Is it driven by energy needs being met? Micro nutrient needs being met? A combination of both? Which macro and which micro nutrient combos? Do other food compounds (e.g. flavonoids, protease inhibitors, anti nutrients) make a difference? Do mildly toxic plant compounds (tannins? Protease inhibitors?) trigger satiety? Can certain macros not be processed corectly into energy without given micro nutrients? Does the body know & try to correct that? How does the body know it has a need for something? How does it turn that need into a sensation of hunger / satiety? How does it know / learn what external food product can meet that need?
PS: I probably need to chip in some examples of my own that have baffled me over the years:
  • fortified white flour (and baked goods made from it!) make me ravenous. I have the worst binges after eating fortified white flour (4500kcal+). Includes plain sourdough bread, croissants, shortbread, etc. Sugar and butter seems to enhance the effect ( ie. Fortified flour Shorbread triggers more eating afterwards than fortified plain white bread). No such effect with either unfortified white flour or whole wheat flour. Fat and sugar make no difference if added to unfortified flour. Experimenting to see why that may be.
  • 8-9 months ago I loved dark chocolate. I had it relatively regularly. Now I simply cannot consume it any more. I regularly develop temporary food likes that in a couple of weeks / months turn into aversions (past loves include brocoli, ice cream, jelly, jaffa cakes and food cooked in tallow).
  • on PSMF diet (protein + veg, no fat, no sugar) I feel no hunger or interest in food. I have done the diet for 6 mths at a time. Satiety is not an issue. The downside is extreme lack of energy, meaning I cannot function at all & lack of sleep.
  • I never crave starch or fat. Only sugar (often) and protein (rare). Eating foods high in salt triggers a craving of sugar.
  • cream + sweetened condensed milk trigger instant satiety.

2024.05.16 14:00 Anonymous9287 Optimum Nutrition Naturally Flavored Whey Protein Chocolate discontinued - need a replacement

Hi all, I have been using this protein powder for YEARS and then lately I saw the prices skyrocket so I was holding off on re-ordering and now I realize...it's been discontinued. I am gutted. It used to be like $45 per drum and then it went up to like $90, and now it's out of stock forever.
What I really liked about this protein powder is that it doesn't have any sweeteners it's a very simple, low intensity, basic, inoffensive flavor.
Does anyone have recommendations for a good clean replacement? Thanks all!

2024.05.16 13:43 Za6olo Most effective supplements for muscle growth?

I just started going to the gym after 3-4 years of break. I'm 23 yo and 85kg. I'm thinking to buy whey protein and creatine so I can increase the speed of muscle growth. When is the best time to take these supplements and should I get anything else?
Thanks.
