2024.05.15 18:29 cakelin99 Which Bridgerton sibling could have a queer romance?

https://www.capitalfm.com/news/tv-film/bridgerton-queer-characters-relationships-season-4-5/
I imagine they are quite likely to keep queer romances to the side characters, or maybe develop a temporary romance for Benedict. But would any of the sibling's stories work as queer romances without diverting too heavily from the books?
I actually wonder if Benedict's story might work quite well with swapping Sophie out for a man - why couldn't he kiss and fall in love with a masked male servant? Francesca could also have an affair's with her dead husband's female cousin rather than male cousin.
The only trouble I would foresee is that in the canon of TV show Bridgerton homophobia does exist so it would be hard for the ending to be quite so happy as there could be no marriage. But given they put in a plotline in series 1 about how black people were accepted in regency era high society, I don't see why they can't make up gay people being accepted by regency era high society as well. Also lesbianism was at least somewhat accepted and there are several examples of independently wealthy lesbian couples being very much an open secret.

2024.05.15 18:20 SchlagzeugNeukoelln English audio tracks muted + several apps won’t resume video on Apple TV 4k

Hi, I have two problems with my beloved Apple TV 4k (3rd gen) and wanted to ask if anyone else is experiencing this and/or has any ideas on how to resolve it.
Both problems started manifesting within the last couple of weeks. The first one about three weeks ago, the muted audio tracks about a week ago. Also, both problems only occur on the Apple TV 4k Apps, Samsungs (my TV’s) native apps work fine, so does everything on my iPhone (including the Apple TV+ app).
So, does any of this sound familiar, does anyone has any helpful advice for me?
Thanks a lot in advance!

2024.05.15 18:20 copaceticconvert Are Your Sigils Not Working? Here's 7 Ways To Supercharge Them.

We're familiar with the tried-and-true method of firing off sigils. It's vulgar, but it works. But, a lot of people hit a wall after the first 5-10 sigils and they stop working. This is when we need to pivot. Here are some ways to add more thought into your sigil casting. More thought=more energy in the direction of the sigil, which is always a good thing during casting.
  1. Astrological Correspondences:
Time your sigils alongside astrological events that are suitable for your working. The moon is an easy one for this.
New moons are low points in the cycle, so use those to wipe the slate clean and to dedicate yourself, to set a new course. Full moons are culminations, they're good for directing energy at a problem, as well as cutting ties with anything actively.
Also, keep your eye out throughout the year as well. I'll give you this one for free: May 18th, Jupiter will be conjunct the sun, with Venus and Uranus close by. Great time to manifest unexpected blessings.
  1. Elemental Correspondences:
Tie elements into your work based on what you need to achieve, and make sure to match them correctly.
Do you want to stop smoking? Bury the sigil instead of burning it, so that way the earth is giving a bit of energy to it over a long period of time.
Want to summon a fling? The magic only needs to work for one night, so burn away!
Also, look into the various realms that the elements reign; Fire is passion, zeal, and creativity, air is intellect and strategy, water is emotion, and extremely mutable, and earth is material goods.
Tip: This nests well into #1. Bury a sigil in Taurus, burn it in Aries, etc.
  1. Numerology and Gematria:
Want love?
L = 12
O = 15
V = 22
E = 5
12+15+22+5=44
4+4=8
Give your sigil eight sides. Cast it eight times, or on August 8th at 4:48.
  1. Color:
This nests well with the elements. You're casting a love spell or a curse? Write it with a red pen. Want money? Use green? Protection? Black.
  1. Use Every Sense While Casting it:
Try making the environment you cast the sigil in completely unique, engaging every sense in some way that relates to what you're trying to manifest.
You want to manifest a relationship? Cast it in your bedroom, with scented candlelight, roses on the bed, and a piece of chocolate on your tongue.
You want protection from evil? Point a knife at it in the garage before burying it at the edge of your property and end it taking a whiff of smelling salts.
Those are two different kinds of workings, so casting them should feel different from each other. When you get good at this, every sigil should be unique.
  1. Turning One Spell into Many:
Runesoup has an excellent article on this, but I'll touch on it too. Find a way to break up one desire into several.
For example, if you want to get a new job, you could just cast "I am in a new job that I love," or you could cast "I find interesting leads on Indeed," "I am a persuasive interviewee," "I get job offers that are higher than I expect," "Recruiters find my resume impressive," and so on and so forth.
Not only does this give you more time and more energy to put towards your goal, but the numbers in and of themselves can have magical correspondences. The more opportunities to add intention into your working, the better.
  1. Do Something That Signals to The Universe That You Know This Will Happen.
Aleister Crowley was once out of money. So, he did an elaborate money ritual, and then he spent the last of his money on ice cream. He did this because he 100% had faith that money was coming in.
Listen; We all aren't Crowley. I don't want to advocate that anyone plays chicken with the universe. But You should act confidently that whatever sigil you just casted is on its way. If you manifested a partner, make sure your Tinder is in top shape. If you manifested a job, start looking at what you might wear for the interview.
You made this a part of your story. Act like it.
Compare these two sigil rituals:
"John wanted a new job. John wrote "John has a good job." on a piece of paper, crossed out the repeating letters and vowels, made a symbol, jerked off while staring at the symbol, and then burned the sigil."
OR
"John wanted a career. CAREER = 58, and 5+8=12, so John made 12 sigil intentions all relating to thing he'd need to bring into his life for a new career. He looked at a sky chart and noticed that Venus was about to enter his 10th house of career, let's say Gemini, so he made sure that at least half of those prompts related to the finer things he wanted to manifest in his new career, as well as the mental skills he would need to capitalize on opportunities.
The day after the first new moon after Venus enters Gemini, he starts a six day routine where he puts a sigil on him, maybe in his shoe, and does a five mile jog in nature. At the end, or when there's a good wind. he rips it up and throws it into the breeze.
The other six he distributes between fire and earth, burying four and burning two. (This is getting long but assume this as thought out as the air one above.)
When all this is said and done, he makes sure his suit is dry-cleaned and that his headshot on LinkedIn is up to date."
If you were the Universe, which John would you listen to?

2024.05.15 18:16 MoveInteresting4334 Needing perspective on manager feedback

Hi all, I could use some experienced perspective on manager feedback to see if I’m just too in my head or if my contributions are being overlooked.
For some background, I’m a mid-level dev (5yoe) working at a very, very large bank. I was brought onto a team about two years ago that’s rebuilding a mission critical internal tool. This internal tool was an old (15 years old?) Java app serving JSP pages that was added on to and patched a lot over its life. The end result is a Frankenstein monster that nobody really understands the full features of and there is little documentation, mostly vague requirements. Your typical “just make it work like the old one” situation.
Despite nobody on the 3 teams developing this app having any React experience at all, it came down from on high that we WOULD use React because all our development is moving to React. They moved me onto the team because I had some limited react experience.
Since then, I have: - Held several training sessions with the teams on React and Typescript - Written most of the tech designs for the React side of the application - implemented logging and telemetry on the UI side after a year of only having it for the backend, and gave a talk across our entire product group about it (seven teams) - at the request of management, re-written (solo, under tight deadline) three different features developed by the other teams that were extremely buggy, convoluted, and never worked correctly. We haven’t had an issue with them since, and this unblocked dozens of dev hours - trained and oversaw our four interns over last summer
I’ve been talking with my manager about wanting promotion from 601 (lower mid level dev) to 602 (higher mid level dev) because much of what I’m doing actually meets the job description of more senior levels (603). My manager told me that while I am hands down one of the best programmers across the three teams, my knowledge of our complex infrastructure and CI/CD wasn’t there yet. In addition, she suggested I find a “problem area” to solve, like one of our 602s that recently took charge of a database migration.
She’s absolutely right about the infra and deployment side. Our deploys require a complex series of requests, approvals with very specific info from very specific and far spread systems. Everytime I do one, I get more comfortable, but I only do one every few months so it’s hard to get practice.
What stung was her statement about finding a “problem area” like the 2 month db migration. In my mind, taking an entire half of our app (the Ui) that was in shambles, leveling up three teams, implementing the monitoring, and working the tech designs WAS finding a problem area and solving it. In a big way, often requiring long hours.
I feel that 1) they don’t really take the Ui app seriously because they’ve always worked on multi page apps and view it as glorified JSPs and 2) I’ve worked so hard to make the UI a non-pain point that they don’t even realize all the work I put in.
This is already overly long but I’m happy to clarify or provide any examples. I just need some perspective.
Thanks!
Edit: I also want to add that most of the complexity of our app is in the UI. Like extremely dynamic forms and screens, including many screens that are slightly but crucially different from each other. Our backend is mostly a middleware that communicates with other services handled by other teams.

2024.05.15 18:16 SeeCrew106 MEGATHREAD - Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico shot multiple times by 71-year-old former security guard

Summary

Slovak PM Robert Fico, a pro-Putin populist, has been shot multiple times while visiting small Slovakian town Handlová. Politico reported he was hit in the head and chest. Aktuality.sk reports he was shot once in the stomach and twice in the arm. A 71-year-old former security guard has been arrested. Fico was transported to a hospital in Banská Bystrica. There was a planned rally in Handlová to protest the controversial overhaul of Slovakia's radio and TV services. That rally has now been canceled by the organizers.
JPDU - Video: the moment Slovak PM Robert Fico was shot by a 71-year-old former security guard
JPDU - Video from the scene right after Slovak PM Robert Fico was shot

Background

Why is all this relevant?
Slovakia used to be part of Czechoslovakia. Hitler occupied the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia in 1938 after France and the U.K. ceded control. After WWII, Czechoslovakia became a communist state under de facto Soviet tyranny via the Warsaw Pact. Four Warsaw Pact countries invaded Czechoslovakia in 1968 in response to the Prague Spring. In 1989, when the USSR started collapsing, the Velvet Revolution restored democracy. Czechoslovakia dissolved in 1992 into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The capital of the Czech Republic is Prague (which I visited and regard as the most beautiful city I've ever seen) and the capital of Slovakia is Bratislava. Slovakia borders Ukraine directly and is geostrategically important.
Robert Fico is a highly controversial pro-Putin populist attempting to mimic Viktor Orbán's takeover and de-democratization of neighboring Hungary to the South. Quoting from a Politico article from March this year:
Fico is “trying to create a mafia state … where the primary goal is to keep the pyramid of power functioning,” Michal Vašečka, a political analyst at the Bratislava Policy Institute said.
And:
Explainer: Who is Robert Fico?
Robert Fico, Slovakia’s prime minister, was shot today in the town of Handlová, where he had been meeting supporters, and taken to hospital.
Born into a working-class family on 15 September 1964, Fico – a lawyer by profession – began his political career with the Communist party shortly before the 1989 Velvet Revolution that led to the breakup of former Czechoslovakia.
He set up his centre-left Smer-SD party in 1999 after being turned down for a ministerial post by the Democratic Left, the Communists’ political heirs.
Embroiled in allegations of corruption he has always denied, Fico is brash and outspoken, with a penchant for bodybuilding, football and fast cars.
Fico admires both Vladimir Putin, saying he would not permit the Russian president’s arrest under an international warrant if he came to Slovakia, and Hungary’s illiberal leader, Viktor Orbán, “who defends the interests of his country and his people”.
The Smer leader is also a tactician: in a three-decade career, he has navigated successfully between mainstream, pro-EU positions and a fiercely nationalist, anti-western rhetoric destined mainly for domestic consumption, proving more than willing to change tack depending on public opinion or political reality.

2024.05.15 18:13 Naraloth Can someone please help me with my Online-Scheduling Algorithm school project?

I'm a complete newbie in the world of programming programming, but i wrote a python programm trying to animate an online scheduling algorithm for a school project.
the programm schedules incoming jobs either on the last processor or on a specific one in the middle.
in the animation part of the programm the new job appearing in color green is visually layered behind an already existing one instead of being added at the endpoint of the already existing one.
here is my code, can someone pls help me fix this issue:
import random import math import matplotlib.pyplot as plt import matplotlib.animation as animation def generate_jobs(num_jobs, max_duration): jobs = [] for i in range(num_jobs): arrival_time = i # Each job arrives exactly one time unit after the previous duration = random.randint(1, max_duration) jobs.append({'arrival_time': arrival_time, 'duration': duration}) return jobs def initialize_processors(num_processors): # Initialize each processor with a load of 0 and create a sorted list of processor indices u = math.floor(0.639 * num_processors) o = math.floor(2 * u - num_processors) processor_names = [f'Processor {i+1}' for i in range(num_processors)] return [0] * num_processors, processor_names, u, o def is_schedule_steep(processors, u, o): # Calculate the average load of processors from u+1 to m if u+1 < len(processors): # Check if u+1 is within the bounds average_load = sum(processors[u:]) / len(processors[u:]) else: average_load = 0 target_load = average_load * 2.1902 # Compare with the load of processor o if o < len(processors) and processors[o] >= target_load: return True return False def schedule_job(processors, processor_order, job, u, o, scheduled_jobs): # Determine if the schedule is steep or flat steep = is_schedule_steep(processors, u, o) if steep: # Schedule on the processor with the least load min_load_processor = processor_order[-1] else: # Calculate the average load of all processors including the new job total_load_with_job = [load + job['duration'] for load in processors] average_load = sum(total_load_with_job) / len(processors) threshold_load = average_load * 1.9201 # Check if adding this job to any processor exceeds the threshold exceeds_threshold = any(load > threshold_load for load in total_load_with_job) if exceeds_threshold: # If any processor exceeds the threshold, schedule on the processor with the least load min_load_processor = processor_order[-1] else: # If no processor exceeds the threshold, schedule on the processor with index u min_load_processor = u # note u is zero-indexed processors[min_load_processor] += job['duration'] processor_order.sort(key=lambda x: processors[x], reverse=True) scheduled_jobs.append((min_load_processor + 1, job['duration'])) # Store scheduled job and its duration return min_load_processor + 1 # Return adjusted index # Example usage: num_processors = 16 processors, processor_names, u, o = initialize_processors(num_processors) jobs = generate_jobs(60, 10) scheduled_jobs = [] fig, ax = plt.subplots() def animate(i): ax.clear() ax.set_ylim(0.5, num_processors + 0.5) # Adjust y-axis limits to accommodate processor names ax.set_xlim(0, max(processors) + 2) ax.set_xlabel('Processor Load') ax.set_ylabel('Processor') ax.set_yticks(range(1, num_processors + 1)) # Set y-ticks to correspond to each processor ax.set_yticklabels(processor_names[::-1]) # Set y-tick labels to reversed processor names for processor_index, load in enumerate(reversed(processors)): # Reverse order of processors for plotting ax.barh(processor_index + 1, load, color='blue') ax.text(load + 0.5, processor_index + 1, f'Total: {load}', va='center', ha='left') # Add total value behind the bar # Schedule next job if i < len(jobs): job = jobs[i] processor_index = schedule_job(processors, list(range(num_processors)), job, u, o, scheduled_jobs) # Draw bars for scheduled jobs for p, duration in scheduled_jobs: ax.barh(num_processors - p + 1, duration, left=0, color='green', alpha=0.5) ax.text(duration / 2, num_processors - p + 1, f'Job {i + 1}', ha='center', va='center') # Sort processors after scheduling each job processors.sort(reverse=True) # Print job scheduling information in the console decision_message = "Steep" if is_schedule_steep(processors, u, o) else "Flat" print(f"Job {i+1} assigned to {processor_names[processor_index-1]}. 2024.05.15 18:12 adulting4kids Flash Fiction Prompts

This is taken from and is copyright protected by globalsoup.net, a website that promotes flash Fiction with annual writing contests.
I am reprinting these Flash Fiction Prompts because they are outstanding ways to freewrite and offer plenty to work with for those who want to learn how to write Flash Fiction.
So check out these prompts and the article and work some of them into your journal! Post the best responses!
100 Awesome Flash Fiction Prompts - Plus Bonus Prompts!
We’ve put together 100 flash fiction prompts, each one designed for a very short story. These prompts will probably be best suited to a story of between 300-1,000 words. If you want to write a longer story using these prompts, you can easily expand these ideas to fit a story of any length.
What is flash fiction?
Flash Fiction is defined as a very short story that can be anywhere from just a couple of words to about a thousand in length. The beauty (and difficulty) of writing flash fiction lies in trying to tell a complete story in so few words. Great flash fiction is succinct, emotive, thought-provoking, and impactful.
What’s the difference between flash fiction and a short story?
The only difference between flash fiction and a typical short story is the word count. However, this scarcity of words means that writing flash fiction can feel like a completely new skill. Just like the short story is a different animal to the novel or novella; flash fiction is kind of unique.
When writing flash, you’ll need to use fewer characters, a simpler plot, and you’ll have to make each word count. This is why editing is so important. You have to be brutal. Cut out everything superfluous and really make sure each and every word is performing an important function in the story. If you’re interested in writing very short fiction, why not check out drabbles? Drabbles are stories of exactly 100 words in length, and they can be a great way to practice keeping your stories very, very short.
How to plot a flash fiction story
When you sit down to write flash fiction, you must begin by choosing an appropriate plot. You cannot simply use a short story plot and tell it using fewer words. A typical flash fiction plot is like looking at one part of a story under a microscope.
For example, let’s look at prompt #21 in our list of 100 Flash Fiction Prompts:
  1. Two people on a sinking ship must decide who should take the last seat in the last lifeboat. If you were writing a novel about a sinking ship, you’d probably want the actual sinking to be the climax of the story. Of course, there are infinite ways to write a novel about a sinking ship, but this would structurally be the most obvious. You’d use the first part of the novel to introduce your characters and describe the voyage leading up to the sinking and the sinking of the ship would be the dramatic climax, leaving the last part of the book as the resolution.
The golden rule of writing short stories is to begin as close to end as you can. So, to turn the same story from novel to short story, you’d probably want to begin with the ship sinking. You haven’t got time to introduce the characters before the action begins, so you’d need to feed in exposition and backstory here and there during the events.
All stories need a good climax. So, you would find the most dramatic moment in the story and build up to it. Perhaps your climax would be the two main characters having to decide who will take the remaining seat on the last lifeboat.
Finally, you need a resolution. In a longer short story you do have time to bring in some kind of satisfying resolution at the end.
But, if you’re writing flash fiction and your story is only a few hundred words, you really need to zoom in on one tiny moment in that story.
You don’t have time to tell the entire story of a sinking ship, but you can turn one moment into a story.
We’ve chosen the lifeboat situation as the key moment in this hypothetical story. Two characters must decide which one of them will take the last seat on the last lifeboat. This is an appropriate plot for flash fiction because it’s simple, high-stakes, dramatic, and thought provoking.
Not all flash fiction will have a plot quite this dramatic, but all great flash fiction will have a plot that can be expressed in just one or two sentences.
If you have a plot in mind, but it seems more suitable for a longer story, you can sometimes find several flash fiction plots hidden within it. Just look for little stories within the story, like the lifeboat moment in our hypothetical tale of the sinking ship.
This brings us to our top tip for coming up with ideas for flash fiction stories:
if you’re ever stuck for ideas, you can find little stories within the story in books, movies, and TV shows. A full length feature film might have as many as 20 little incidents in it that could easily be flash fiction.
Don’t directly write a story based on the film, though. Just carefully pick out those little moments, write down what’s happening as a one or two sentence plot, and then use it to inspire your own, completely original flash fiction story.
One of our 100 Flash Fiction Prompts was actually taken from the movie Pulp Fiction!
How to write very short flash fiction
There are several reasons writers might start writing flash fiction. Of course, it could be that they just love and enjoy the form, but sometimes they’ll be a more strategic and practical reason at play.
Perhaps they want to practise the process of writing stories within the confines of a certain word limit. Maybe they are trying to develop a daily writing routine and they don’t have a lot of free time. It could be that they’re trying to break a habit of not finishing writing projects, or perhaps they are entering a flash fiction competition.
Whatever the reason, very often when we sit down to write flash, we must work under an imposed or self-imposed word restraint. We’ve set ourselves (or been set) the task of keeping the story under a particular number of words.
So, how do you plot a flash fiction story when you have to keep your story very, very short.
We’re not going to discuss stories of 100 words or fewer here. Technically, those stories are still flash, however, we prefer to categorise 100 word stories as drabbles and anything under 100 words as micro fiction.
But what if you have to keep your flash fiction story under, let’s say, 300 words? How do you write a flash fiction story that short?
The answer is: get your microscope out again. Remember earlier when we said writing flash fiction is like looking at part of a story under a microscope? If you have to write very short flash fiction, you’ll need to zoom in even further.
Let’s look at a couple of examples from our 100 Flash Fiction Prompts:
  1. During a match, a young boxer must decide whether to throw the fight.
If you had 1,000 words to devote to the story, you could have time to tell the story of the entire fight. With only 300 words, it might be better to zoom in on the very moment when the boxer must choose whether or not to go down.
In a longer flash fiction story you might have time to go into detail about why he’s in this situation and why he’s so conflicted. In a 300 word story, you might only devote one or two sentences to his gambling debt and the large sum of money waiting for him if he goes down in the third round, as instructed.
  1. A family must decide what to take and what to leave behind as a wildfire approaches their home.
If you had 1,000 words to devote to this story, you might be able to write about the whole process of choosing what to take and what to leave behind. You might be able to mention many different choices and have the whole family participate in the story. You’d be able to go into some details about certain choices and the stories behind individual objects or mementos, as well as the implications of choosing certain things over others.
With only 300 words, it would be advisable to zoom in on one member of the family and to focus on one profound and important choice.
How to write a flash fiction story
Now you have your mini plot, you still need to make sure your flash fiction feels like a complete story. It should still have a beginning, middle, and an end.
Just like a short story, you may need to bring in a little exposition here and there to give texture, context, backstory, and to bring some depth to the characters. But, unlike a short story, you won’t necessarily need to end with a full, detailed resolution. It’s quite common for a flash fiction story to end with a quick twist or plenty of ambiguity.
Flash Fiction is much more about eliciting emotions and provoking thought, than setting up and resolving a complex story.

2024.05.15 18:03 SecretFrog [Hobby] Looking for people for hobby/portfolio project

Hi all, I'm working on a project that I've wanted to make for a while, the scope is very small, ideally 1 (semi) polished level, 1 basic boss. In as few words as possible it is meant to be Vampire Survivor style game with game play based on (stolen from) Invoker in Dota 2 (For reference if you've never played: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCcsA4P3dUM ). The main idea is that you cast spells that you queue using 3 Sigils (Q,W,E), and based on how many of each sigil is active different spells are queue'd up, the player can only queue 2 spells at any time though. An example is E, E, W would be the combination for a meteor, E, W, E and W, E, E would also give the same result. I've already built a very rough prototype on top of an RPG tutorial from GameDevTV but am willing to start from scratch if the end result is better. I have work experience as a software developer in C# so I am comfortable with coding and have a lot of interest in game design but am looking for people to learn from and with.
Mostly looking for programmer(s) with any amount of experience more than me (a few endless runner games) but if anyone feels like they can or want to contribute feel free to reach out. Again, this project is meant to be as small as possible in scope and very casual. I usually check reddit once a day if I can.
If I can include more information that would help capture your interest or be helpful in anyway, please feel free to let me know. I am based in EST but only really care if you can speak enough English to collaborate.
Repost, forgot title.

2024.05.15 18:00 sawconzeedunts Calculating Serve Speed from Video

I’m no mathematician, but as someone who doesn’t want to buy a speed gun, I’ve been looking into ways to use video analysis to calculate serve speed for a while. All I wanted when I began this process was a simple formula that would approximate my serve speed with some degree of accuracy.
I began by researching the topic on the tw forums and the main sticking point seemed to be how to account for air drag, as “serve speed” is off the racket, not its average speed over time. I decided to look for some atp highlights and collect a sample of serves to see what air drag coefficient would, when multiplied by the average serve speed before the bounce, equal the official radar speed.
It was simplest to use serves that hit or almost hit the line as this always means that the ball will have traveled about 60 feet from contact to bounce. It turned out that the average speed before the bounce was about 20% less than the official radar speed, with an error of no more than 5mph at 25 frames per second.
S = serve speed in mph T = time from contact to bounce in seconds 0.818=1.2/1.467 where 1.2 converts avg speed to initial speed and dividing by 1.467 converts ft/s into mph.
S ≈ 0.818(60/T)
leaving it unsimplified so you can change 60 if you want.
I didn’t do this scientifically, didn’t collect data from different altitudes and humidities or anything like that, but every so often I use tennis tv highlights to check if the formula still works and it seems to. Someone could do a much better job at this but it’s good enough for me.
It tends to underestimate the speed of serves shorter than 60ft because it assumes 60ft of deceleration, so keep that in mind if you for example try to approximate the speed of a 55ft serve. I eyeballed several of these from the Paul vs Medvedev match yesterday and the formula was 5-7mph low most of the time. Likewise for wide serves you can use 61ft to account for diagonal distance. I’m ignoring server height because it only varies by a few feet at most.
Finally, I know many people here will say serve speed doesn’t matter. This obviously isn’t true. Faster serves are harder to return and also an indicator of better technique. That’s not to say targeting doesn’t matter, but as we are all trying to improve our serve technique, the fact of it getting faster is a clear indication of progress.
I hope this helps someone, it’s helped me. Btw I think someone made an online tool that does this a while ago where you can more precisely tinker with the serve distance, but I can’t find it anymore. In any case I like to just pull out my calculator and come up with an estimation in a few seconds.

2024.05.15 17:57 SarcasmOrgasm96 Need help improving Mandarin

I'm banana. Parents don't speak, or read, or write Chinese, but chucked me into SJKC. Too poor to afford tuition too, so I just waddled along. Got horrendous grades in every subject because I didn't understand anything past primary 3.
On a tangent, if there's any banana parents thinking of just chucking your kid into a SJKC just to get them acclimated to the language, please don't. EVERYTHING is taught in that one language, and if they don't understand it they'll do horribly in EVERY subject. This affects them in the long run for especially for subjects like math, where each new topic builds on the last. In SJKC my math scores sat at 30+, 50+ if I really worked my ass off so I thought I was just dumb. When to SMK, understood the question, boom, 80+ for math, ex after I went back and redid my basics.
Anyways, recently finished SPM and got an administrative job. Long story short, got terminated after a week because my Chinese wasn't up to par. The job required me to introduce products to customers and reply Whatsapp inquiries in Chinese, and while I thought I did pretty ok introducing, can't be denied that my reading and typing was slow af. So got fired for it, even though during the interview, and even on my resume, I did list my Chinese as basic and intermediate.
So right now I'm doing anything in my power to improve my mandarin, and also get a paper qualification for it. I'm using this app called daily Chinese which gives you flashcards for words, and also watching YouTube videos. Duolingo doesn't help because it's too basic for me.I think my level of Chinese sits at lower intermediate for speaking, and basic for reading and writing. I'm not good at expressing myself in Mandarin. Typing is another thing altogether because my pinyining isn't good, like for example 错(cuo)I'd think it's chuo.
Could you please recommend to me some online Mandarin courses? Preferably an institute which offers paper qualifications like HSK exam.

2024.05.15 17:51 misanthropicity Unified Audio Solution

I've been searching for a unified audio solution for my apartment and I can't seem to find exactly what I'm looking for.
I want something I can route 2 desktop PCs, TV, Nintendo Switch, AKAI MPC, and possibly others into and then easily select the out (I'd need it to support both wired—1/8 and 1/4 at least—and Bluetooth functionality, like some computer speakers, a sound bar, Bluetooth headphones). It also needs to play multiple sources at the same time.
The goal is to be able to have a destination active, for example, my Bluetooth headphones, and if I'm watching something on a PC and turn on my MPC, I get that audio via Bluetooth as well.
I've been looking into mixers, receivers, interfaces, etc., but it's been a bit tough to find something that seems to fit what I'm looking for.
Maybe I'm not using the correct terms. Not sure. Any help is appreciated!

2024.05.15 17:45 MadCaptain2207 33M CET (Rome) timezone Looking for friends to play with and talk about games

Hey, I play on PS5. I'm a 33 year old male, I work as an English language teacher in Italy, and I'm married (I don't have children). I have less time to game now than I did previously, but I can still connect for an hour or so, usually in the evenings. I'm mostly a single player guy, but I'm looking to make some online friends who just want to chill, talk and such while playing a game. Right now I'm playing Fallout 76, but for example I'd be interested in trying out Diablo 4 too, and if necessary I can just buy a new game that I could learn how to play. What kind of person am I? Well, I'd say talkative, really passionate about videogames and books, but also movies, tv series, etc.. I'm looking for people (21+ pls) who love to talk, discuss, reflect, and dive deep into a conversation about your favourite games, movies, and so on. I'd say I'm also quite open-minded, although I might not agree with you on everything you say, but I'll always try to keep the conversation civilised and maybe just joke a bit. If you're in the European timezone that would be preferable, but it's not absolutely necessary ... Please do send me a message on Reddit if it sounds to you like we'd get along...!

2024.05.15 17:37 Cesmina12 Genuine question: What's with all the looks-bashing?

Can someone explain to me why they do this? Like any good internet user, I love to bash cast members for bad behavior, but I don't get why folks feel compelled to pick apart their faces and bodies. There seems to be this sentiment of "They decided to go on TV and they're a jerk, so I can say whatever I want and it won't mean I'M a jerk. Even though by all accounts I sound like one right now."
Prime examples are Angela and Big Ed. Those two are beyond problematic and deserving of a ton of criticism and jokes at their expense, but Angela can't help her age and Ed can't help his birth defect. So why not stick to the things they actually CAN help? Namely that they're abusive people. There's also a shit ton of completely, totally, utterly average-looking cast members as well who are regularly pegged as physically repulsive (example: Clayton, who just looks like a regular white dorky guy). For the female cast members, there's a lot of "Well, she's not even that pretty, her nose...her extensions...blah blah."
If a cast member has plastic surgery, people are even harsher, probably because fans think that it speaks to that person's vanity. So we relentlessly bully someone when we don't think they look good, and then we crucify them when they have work done. It especially bothers me when I see people making fun of Darcey - that woman clearly has MASSIVE issues with self-worth and it seems like a lot of people follow her just to snark on her filters and procedures. I'm truly, really curious about what that does emotionally for the people knocking her. Do they feel better about themselves after? More at peace in their own bodies? Are they just blowing off steam?
Just a thought: when you make fun of a physical feature on a cast member, remember that it's ALSO hurtful to uninvolved people who have the same physical feature. If you looked up "100% average-looking White lady" in the dictionary, you would probably find a picture of me, but if I went on this show there'd be a million posts about how I'm basically Quasimodo.

2024.05.15 17:36 Specialist-Bag8043 Space expert reveals Guinness World Records of the universe

Guinness World Records has been expanded by a space expert in order to showcase some incredible statistics found throughout the rest of the cosmos. In a new video this week, British scientist and BBC TV broadcaster Brian Cox says, "If there was a Guinness World Records 'Universe' book, the records would be remarkable." Cox quickly moves through an extensive list of exciting space-based records, starting with "the most enormous compact object," a supermassive black hole, a picture of which was taken by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope three years ago. The so-called M87 galaxy, which is six billion times more massive than the sun and is located 55 million light-years from Earth. In addition to numerous records, Cox unveils the universe's fastest object as well as its biggest structure and smallest object. The scientist identified Glass-z13 as the farthest distant verified galaxy when asked. "The light's journey from it to the telescope took around 13.4 billion years. We are examining the galaxy as it might have been 200 million or 300 million years after the Big Bang. Glass-z13 has a distance from Earth of little over 33 billion light-years due to the expansion of the universe. The James Webb Space Telescope, the largest telescope of its sort ever constructed, made the discovery of the far-off galaxy. The Webb telescope has been conducting research into deep space and sending stunning images back to Earth since its deployment earlier this year. As Cox points out, recordings of the universe are subject to perpetual change as astronomers and scientists make new discoveries all the time using more potent tools like the Webb telescope.
What reionized the Universe, and when?
When did the transparency of the universe begin? It's a strange but crucial question. The Universe was once opaque, but over time it changed to transparency and is still transparent now. It is literally the reason we can see far-off objects in the sky, and in a more existential sense, that instant of cosmic transparency had an impact on the behaviour of galaxies, the formation of stars, and other things. Answering the question is something that many astronomers want to do because it has significant ramifications for the objects we want to study and because we are here because of it. Astronomers from several countries may have discovered the solution to the puzzle: 12.7 billion years ago, roughly 1.1 billion years after the Big Bang. The fact that this is a few hundred million years later than previous calculations has some intriguing ramifications. Our entire Universe was in a hot, dense condition and all of its matter was ionised immediately after the Big Bang, like minutes after it: Any hydrogen or helium nuclei were free of any electron bonds. When an electron attempted to move, a photon, a particle of light, would strike it and cause it to fall. At the time, all of the light was incredibly high-energy and more than capable of maintaining the ionisation of the environment. As matter is so dense, if you were in this miasma, which in a sense you were since everything in the Universe was, it would appear absolutely opaque to you. An ionisation timeline Gas was cold and neutral in the early Universe (on the left), but as time goes on (on the right), radiation from stars and active black holes rips electrons off hydrogen atoms, illuminating the gas. An ionisation timeline Gas was cold and neutral in the early Universe (on the left), but as time goes on (on the right), radiation from stars and active black holes rips electrons off hydrogen atoms, illuminating the gas. The time interval is roughly one billion years from left to right. Thesan Collaboration, in picture Astonishingly, as the Universe cooled and expanded over the next 400,000 years, the average photon eventually ran out of energy to ionise hydrogen. For the first time, protons and electrons united and remained together to form neutral hydrogen. Recombination is the term used to describe the joining of an electron and a proton, hence this event is referred to as recombination even though it was the first time most atoms had united. Continuing the story Neutral hydrogen is highly good at absorbing visible light, the wavelengths of light humans can see, therefore the universe was still opaque even though the density of the Universe was reducing as it expanded. This period is known as the Dark Ages. That situation would last for a very, very long period until new objects formed that could emit ultraviolet light. When they were created, they ionised the hydrogen in space once more, but this time was different since the Universe had a lower density, allowing photons to go farther without being absorbed. Space became transparent all of a sudden and remained so. We can see a great distance even today because the majority of gas is ionised, or officially called a plasma. Reionization refers to this point in the universe's history. However, when did that occur? A pleasant approach to learn more exists. A blazar, or galaxy containing a supermassive black hole spewing energy, as depicted by an artist. Credit: Science Communication Lab and DESY A blazar, or galaxy containing a supermassive black hole spewing energy, as depicted by an artist. Credit: Science Communication Lab and DESY Image: Science Communication Lab at DESY Huge black holes evolved in the centres of galaxies as they initially emerged from the darkness. These black holes would collect matter as it fell into them, building up in a disc that would become extremely hot and emit high-energy ultraviolet light, X-rays, and gamma rays. These galaxies are what astronomers refer to as quasars, and we can view them from a very, very long way. When these quasars' light reaches us, it battles the Universe's expansion, which causes their wavelengths to lengthen—a process known as redshifting. In other words, the redshift reveals the quasar's distance, which in turn reveals how long after the Big Bang we observe it. Due to the fact that light can only move at a certain speed, objects that are further away are redshifted more and appear to us in the past.Because of the quasar's immense strength, even if we observe it before reionization, it will have already ionised the hydrogen immediately around it, allowing light to escape. The light from the quasar will be absorbed if there is a cloud of hydrogen between us and the quasar that is sufficiently removed from it to remain neutral. The redshift of the wavelength gap we detect in the quasar's light indicates how far away the cloud is from us and, more significantly, how far back in time we saw it. Very far distant clouds are neutral and unionised. However, following reionization, we suddenly stop noticing them because they are unable to take in the quasar's light.. So in theory, all we need to do is isolate the light from a collection of distant quasars using really good spectra. Numerous wavelengths will exhibit significant absorption, which will disappear at a sufficiently low redshift. Reionization took place then. This is really difficult to do in real life. You need really brilliant quasars, and even then, they are faint because they are so far away. Additionally, you need very good spectra, which calls for a large telescope and prolonged exposures. Numerous additional factors must also be taken into consideration, such as how the universe was structured back then. However, the astronomy team actually did this. They used archived observations of 42 additional extremely bright quasars from two other observatories in addition to 25 very distant very bright quasars from the XQR-30 survey. They discover that the Universe first became transparent roughly 1.1 billion years after the Big Bang by closely examining the 67 quasar spectra. Illustration of the first stars in the universe illuminating the gas clouds where they originated. Photo: NAOJ Illustration of the first stars in the universe illuminating the gas clouds where they originated. Photo: NAOJ And that's really fascinating! What precisely ionised the universe is unknown. There was enough time for supermassive, extremely hot, luminous stars to form as well, and they could have also blasted out UV light, enough to contribute. It might have been these very quasars. Was it thus stars, quasars, or a combination of both? The timing may be able to focus this. Reionization was previously estimated to have occurred 200 million years earlier, but if the new estimate is accurate, there is plenty of room for many more of these first-generation stars to form and contribute. So, if you'll excuse the pun, it might have been both stars and quasars working together. Around this time, galaxies were developing, and if these stars were incredibly powerful, they could blow gas straight out of the galaxies, altering the evolution of those galaxies. In order to comprehend when these stars existed and what they might have done to their surrounding environments, we need to know when reionization took place. I'll remind you that you reside in a galaxy and on a planet revolving around a star whose lineages may be traced back to this period. Reionization—what it was, when it happened, and how it affected the universe—thus plays a role in our existence. It's clear why we want to know the answer. And it might be here at last. Naturally, more observations are preferable. We may also be able to determine the duration of reionization if we have more exact estimates of this number from models of cosmic structure. 1,000,000 years? 10, fifty, or one hundred? It's almost certain that larger telescopes with better cameras will be used to answer that question. We are among the first species to comprehend precisely how the universe came into being and what occurred to it after that. You can quote me on that, but the Universe took 13.8 billion years to get here, and I think it was worth the wait.

2024.05.15 17:23 PracticalLecture5771 Yumna and Sohai. ❤️

People always talk about male friendships, but here's a great example of female camaraderie. I watched all the clips from the premiere of Gentleman, and indeed, Yumna was always by Sohai's side, holding her hand and sitting with her. As Amna said, it's Sohai's comeback to TV after becoming a mom, and she looked visibly nervous. I'm glad Yumna was there to care for and support her. This was really heartwarming. They both leave cute messages on each other's Instagram posts too.

2024.05.15 17:18 dead_soul_monotone Will AEW statistically become TNA starting in 2024?

Listening to the latest Drive-Thru reminded me that some of the folks who have been following AEW for years only did so because of an influencer regularly talking about it, like 🌽 y.
What happens when that stops? For example, few if any wrestling YouTube channels or podcasts cover the goings on of TNA. It was a different period of time, but I'm curious if the financial impact of slowly become irrelevant was measured when it happened to them, and if a similar projection might be emerging when examining the trends of AEW - i.e.: ticket sales, danger window for TV renewal, YouTube views, etc.
Basically, how low does their floor go?

2024.05.15 17:15 Kstantas You can get any video of any length from alternate universes.

All you have to do is wish, and there you have a video from any parallel universe on your flash drive/computephone. What will it be? A Zapruder film from a world where Oswald missed and hit Jacqueline Kennedy? A live broadcast of a meteorite falling to Earth? Iron Man with Tom Cruise as Tony Stark? A YouTube clip from the world where you became a successful blogger? New episodes of your favourite TV series, which in reality was shut down after the first season?
All of these things, because alternate universes are infinite, so you are limited by your imagination.

2024.05.15 17:12 Throwawaybaconator Advice needed on path to take

Hi all -
I've been a fellow OE for few years and have this interesting situation and would love to hear what y'all advise/think.
I Have J1 for many many years. J1 is solid, J1 is what I have on resume for all potential interviews and OE positions.
J1 ~~timeline 2012-current for example purposes
J2 ~~timeline 2020-2022 for example purposes

A former J2 colleague reached out on a position at their company. Im def interested in however how would one structure the timeline resume?
Option A - put that I went back to J1 after J2? At most provide 2 W2's since is within last 7 years?
J1 - 2022 - current
j2 - 2020 - 2022
J1 - 2012 - 2020

Option B - Leave it off and say after leaving J2, I was on sabbatical? but would J1 still show up on background check? No right? since they only verify what I tell them? so it would still be providing 2 W2's for last 7 years?
Sabbatical 2022 - current
j2 - 2020 - 2022
J1 - 2012 - 2020

Any other options I have neglected that may be a good path to have the easiest background check?
