2024.05.18 23:48 AcceptableSet3916 "Jealous wedding guest ruins the money shot": An Essay About The Woman In The Photo

First of all, I would like to say THANK YOU to all of you that showed so much love to my first post ever in Reddit!
Since my girl Millie got too much hate for wearing white and ruining the best photo of the wedding, I decided to write her sad story and share it with all of you. It's a LONG tale, full of ups and mostly downs (TLDR at the end of the post). Sooo, grab some cookies and popcorn while I spill the tea ;)
******WARNING******** The story features what I believe to be unsettling content (pregnancy loss) for some. It's hidden as spoiler, so please don't click it if it's a sensitive issue for you. <3
Our story starts with poor young adult who shall not be named (because I don't remember her name). God (me) had big plans and challenges for her, as she started with 0 simoleons in an off the grid island, with hopes of her becoming a millionaire. She moved in the big island without money, a place to sleep, a toilet, nothing. The challenge goes like this: raise money from beachcombing, buy a towel to sleep on, buy a bush to pee in, snorkel, plant and build a life from zero. And, under no circumstances communicate with another sim.
This challenge was too difficult. The loneliness and hardships, the struggle to just survive and find food, led this young girl to her death by drowning in the middle of the ocean. It was too soon, so God decided to try this challenge again, giving the new sim a head start.
That leads us to the protagonist of the story, Millie Carson.
Millie Carson is a young adult who moved in the same island, like a castaway. All she found on that island was a towel, some planted trees, a toilet bush and a grave.
The ghost from the grave came often to haunt and tease her and finally became her enemy.
At first, young Millie tried to stay away from other sims but, since they kept coming and visiting, God decided that it was ok for her to have some friends.
Millie's neighbors were Miki and Ali, a happy couple with two babies. They kept visiting and bringing food to their poor young neighbor, since she was struggling so much. Millie grew close with Ali, who came swimming to her island sometimes.
Meanwhile, Millie learned some skills that earned her some money and food. She became really good at fitness, gardening and fishing. Little by little, she earned enough money to buy diving supplies and took up some diving photography and treasure hunting. All those helped her build a tiny wood home which finally had a toilet and a shower and even a fridge. Life was getting better for Millie, until she started having feelings for her married neighbor...
Millie was attracted to Ali: his long blond hair, his green eyes and dark skin. To her surprise, Ali was interested in her as well. She tried to fight it but it was over her own power to resist. They made sweet woohoo and became a couple, while he was still married with two kids.
Love makes you do stupid things and that's what happened to Millie. She fell in love with a married man and, surprise surprise, she got pregnant with his kid.
While on her 1st trimester, she visited her neighbolover's home to tell him the news. His wife, Miki, opened the door and the sight was unbelievable: She was pregnant as well, on her 3rd trimester. Millie chatted with Miki as nothing was wrong and even socialized with her kids for a bit. But it was now time for Ali to learn the truth. Millie pulled him aside and told him everything.
To her surprise, Ali was content with being a parent to their child. Millie felt his support and fell even harder for him, causing her to do the unthinkable: Woohoo with him all over his tiny house while his wife and two kids were inside! They woohood EVERYWHERE: The small single bed, the kitchen sink, the counters, standing... They almost got caught by Miki, but hopefully she was so pregnant that it took her an eternity to reach the woohoo spot.
Millie started thinking about their future. Tormented by her jealousy, she asked Ali about Miki. Miki's super pregnant belly was an indicator that Ali still loves and woohoos with his wife, two-timing both women. To her dismay, Ali confessed his love about Miki, but he was willing to keep his relationship with Millie. But that wasn't enough for Millie...
Without hesitation, Millie served Ali an ultimatum: It's her or Miki. No love triangles, no hiding. Her kid needed a father and she needed support as a poor young woman. All those pregnancy hormones made her unreasonable - she came between a happy couple and now she felt that her lover's wife stole him from her, even though they were already together! The irony!
Millie couldn't get over her feelings, so she invited Miki over and told her EVERYTHING. That she was pregnant. That the father was poor Miki's husband. Miki got even yelled at for sleeping with her own husband. Millie was out of control.
Like a tsunami, a force that couldn't be stopped, Millie called over Ali and told him to break it off with his wife. It was now or never. Ali did as told and suddenly Miki broke down crying, hating life and those two who ruined it.
Eventually, Miki left and the.. happy couple were finally alone. Millie asked Ali to move in and he gladly accepted. He even proposed and they stayed engaged until after their baby girl, Angelique, was born.
Meanwhile, even though Miki was hating them, she still came over with extra food like a good neighbor. But her relations with the couple never improved much.
The happy couple decided to get married. Millie wore a pretty but simple boho white dress, hair down and golden jewelry. But her joyful smile was the prettiest jewel she could wear. It was a lovely, quiet wedding on the seashore, during sunset.
Soon after, Millie got pregnant again but wasn't ready or happy for it. Unfortunately, there were some complications with the pregnancy and baby Donovan was born dead. They buried him under a lemon tree and cried for many seasons about him.
Ali started helping Millie with gardening, fishing and diving. But his dream was to finally earn his degree in Communications. He still had 3 classes to pass and then he could enter the PR world. He soon earned his degree with a low to medium score and was ready to start working. There was a huge problem, though...
The island was off the grid and he could not apply for the job, not use the very much needed internet. A decision had to be made: Should they live on this island forever, living off the land, or they should move somewhere else and follow Millie's dream to become millionaires?
The choice was easy. The couple moved to Finchwick, in a big cottage house with a big garden, front and back. They brought with them the plants they had gardened with so much love and also bought some chickens. Life was good for a while, baby Angelique was growing but woohoo life was... fine.
Ali found a job in PR and had to work all day, even from home. He had to polish his charisma and writing skills and meet new people. So, that made Millie a stay at home mom, a gardener, a housekeeper. But there was no time for her lifestyle needs: outdoor living and working out. She became frustrated and was always in a bad and uncomfortable mood. She had gained a lot of weight from her pregnancy, she hardly recognized herself in the mirror...All this bad mood made her cranky. Everytime Ali tried to woohoo with her, she had no drive. So, their love life went down the drain...
Meanwhile, Ali was doing great at work, earning at least 2000 simoleons per day. He had met many people, and one of them became a really good friend of his. His name was Gabriel and he was thin, with black short hair, dark skin and modern makeup.
Ali was tormented by his feelings when he hang out with Gabriel. He couldn't understand how a man can be attracted to another guy like that. He was open to the idea, but had never acted upon it. It wasn't the looks - Gabriel was pretty basic. But there was something about the both of them that made him feel... amazing. The attention he got from Gabriel, the friendship.. It was like they knew each other from another lifetime.
Every time Gabriel came over, Ali got excited. He was interested in his words and inner world, not only his appearance. One night, he couldn't take it anymore. While they were talking the backyard table, Ali started flirting with Gabriel. Things got heated fast and they shared the most beautiful first kiss. That was exactly what he always wanted to feel, but was missing from his other relationships. He proposed to have woohoo in the home office, while Millie and Angelique were sleeping unaware upstairs...
They woohood hard and many times. It was a total WoohooFest. Morning came and Ali, having not slept at all, got ready to go to work. He didn't forget to kiss his wife goodbye, but he spent the entire day thinking about Gabriel. By night, he had decided to ask Gabriel to become his boyfriend.
Millie on the other side, was getting better. She bought a walking machine and she often went swimming in the river. Her woohoo drive was coming back strong and that meant more time with her beloved husband. They started woohooing more often, but Ali was also missing Gabriel...
God suddenly had an idea! Ali should ask Millie to have expanded woohoo with someone else, and that someone else couldn't be other than (yes, you guessed it) Gabriel. Ali went on and asked his wife and God told her that yes, it would be fun! So, unaware of God and her husband's plans, she happily accepted to engage in multiple sim woohoo...
Ali was so excited! He couldn't believe his ears! He immediately called over Gabriel and explained the situation. Gabriel accepted as well and it was time for Gabriel to meet with Millie. Millie tried to get to know him but for some reason he was distant. She tried to flirt with him but he didn't reciprocate. Millie got embarrassed and locked herself in her room for some time, to recollect herself. It shouldn't be so hard, right?
At the same time, Ali made his move on Gabriel and they woohood. Gabriel was more than excited to get together with Ali. So, why not Millie?
After Millie got over her embarrassment, she came out the room. Ali proposed having multiple woohoo and they did it. Everyone had a pleasant time.
After that, they got together two more times. But, the last time, at Gabriel's house, was the final blow.
Millie kept trying to flirt alone with Gabriel, not getting the message but, DUDE. He was NOT into her. It was heartbreaking. She tried so hard for her husband, her self esteem and again, she was turned down. A second choice. She didn't deserve it. And then, she though about it. The flirt between Ali and Gabriel. How they would have woohoo, the three of them, but Gabriel was rejecting her. It was time for answers...
Millie first told Ali to end the expanded woohoo agreement. It was too much for her. He wasn't happy about it, but he agreed. And then, she asked the million dollar question: "What's going on between you two?". Ali tried to hide it, told her they were only friends. But God was starting to feel bad about poor Millie, so had her ask again: "WHAT'S GOING ON BETWEEN YOU TWO?"
The answer was like a knife, going through her heart. Ali loved Gabriel and that's all she needed to know. Their woohoo life was non existent before and now had found someone who made him feel better, more... alive! That's all Millie needed to know. She went over to Gabriel and try to make a last, desperate woohoo pass at him. Once more, he rejected her. It was all so clear. She was the third wheel.
Her ego and her heart were stomped on the ground, like a cockroach. A beautiful, kind, hard working sim shouldn't go through all that. She headed back home, to the privacy of her bedroom and cried her eyeballs out. Ali didn't come home that night and went straight to work.
The next day, Millie invited Gabriel over. Oooh no, she wouldn't let him have Ali so easily. She would humiliate him first. He came over and she started yelling at him. Her face was red and hot, she was fueled by rage. She ending up giving him the beating of his life. When Ali came home from work, both his lovers were black and blue from fighting.
Baby Angelique started crying. She had woken up. Millie rushed upstairs to help her toddler with her needs, but Ali and Gabriel stayed downstairs. Ali tried to comfort Gabriel, asking him to stay. He didn't care about his marriage anymore. God led them to the hall upstairs, outside the bedrooms. They started woohooing again, right there, like animals!
Poor Millie, as she opened her daughter's bedroom's door, she caught her cheater husband in the act! THE AUDACITY!!! And if it that wasn't enough, when she went over to slap him, he acted like she wasn't there and went to woohoo in the shower with his boyfriend - AGAIN! WTH!!!
At this point, Millie knew it was time to give Ali the boot and kick him the hell out of their home, and so she did. After Ali's lover left, the married couple had a long, heated conversation that only had one outcome - Ali had to move out immediately.
So, he left and rented a one-bedroom apartment in the city. He also decided to ask Gabriel to live with him, and Gabriel happily accepted. A new chapter started for Ali but unresolved things were left in the middle with his wife that needed to be dealt with.
While all these took place, Millie had gotten close with celebrity Rahul Chopra. They became good friends and she was invited to his wedding. It was a one of a kind event because Rahul had a shotgun wedding with his wife when they were teenagers due to unwanted pregnancy. After many kids later, Rahul's eldest daughter, with the villainous valentine aspiration (long story) decided to break her eternally faithful parents up for fun. So they did break up, but they were so made for each other, like puzzle pieces, that it was impossible to not end up together again.
Rahul fell back in love with his wife and they decided to do it right this time. They planned the perfect wedding event in San Myshuno's park, during sunset. The whole family was there and their 2nd child, Philip (YA) would take the professional pictures of the wedding.
The ceremony started, everyone (almost) was seated and the photographer (and me) were preoccupied with taking the happy couples pictures. As the ceremony ended, the couple was ready to share their first kiss as husband and wife. The air was filled with confetti that floated playfully around them, the fireworks were set off behing them and the sun was showering them with the warmest rays. It was a one time opportunity to get the perfect picture. Philip got ready to press click. And then, she appeared.
Millie, clearly bothered and heartbroken by other people's love, made a run for the exit and ruined Philip's perfect photograph. The angry look on her face would forever haunt Philip's mind. Why would that woman ruin this happy moment and why the hell would she wear white at someone's wedding? I mean, you wouldn't mistake her for the bride, who wore an expensive wedding gown, but still... Something was wrong with this girl and Philip had to find out...
After the wedding, Millie went back home. The days passed and the divorce was not finalized. She asked her kid who she wanted to stay with, but without reply. She called Ali over, but he texted back he didn't want to come over. Millie had her -now child- daughter call over her dad. This time, Ali responded positively and soon after he arrived. Millie took him straight to the lawyers to see who will get custody of Angelique.
This time, God had no plans, God left it all to luck. So, unfortunately, Ali won custody of Angelique, who immediately went to live with him. Now, Millie was alone. Only her and her money and her baby son's grave in the front yard. Now she was angry, NOW HE WOULD PAY.
Millie grabbed Ali and went once again to the lawyers. It was now time to split the estate. At least 100k simoleons in the bank, plus whatever the house is worth. Millie wants to get everything, but once again, God won't interfere. She comes back home, head down, beaten - she lost 80k.
She turns to her new friend, Philip. He is basic, but he's a good guy. He lives alone in an apartment in San Myshuno, studies Fine Arts in university, comes from a good family. He also has a girlfriend that lives across the hall from him, but Millie doesn't know. And God tells her to come onto him. Now Philip has two girlfriends and God must interfere.
God and luck are playing games with Millie's life.
As I'm writing her story, there's only one thing I feel: Sad.
This girl started out with hopes and dreams. So I think that we should forgive her for attending a friend's wedding wearing white. Some God forgot to change her formal outfit and it was all she had to wear. She's going through a lot!
Her story ends for now, but if you guys like it I might write more about her life's adventures.
Also, what should she do with Philip? Let me know in the comments!
If you read this whole essay / story , you are amazing! And thanks! Hope you liked it! :)
TLDR: YA woman starts with 0 money in off the grid island. Wants to earn a million. Gets pregnant by married neighbor with kids. Marries him and they buy new home. They get pregnant second time, lose the baby.He gets a good job, meets new people, gets new guy friend, has woohoo with that friend. The 3 of them have expanded woohoo. Woman breaks it off. Woman confronts husband about loving other man, he confesses he loves him. Woman kicks him out and he lives alone in flat. The other guy moves in with him. Woman heartbroken, goes to friends wedding wearing white, is angry at happy couple's love, ruins the married couple kiss photo. Photo becomes famous on Reddit. Woman loses custody of only child. Woman loses 80k simoleons after splitting estate. Woman becomes girlfriend of the photographer from the friend's wedding. Photographer already has another girlfriend.
*****EDIT*********** I can't believe I forgot to write this, but Millie also drowned in the ocean while being fatigued from diving for treasures. I decided to not save and give her a second chance. Her life is dramatic, UUUUUUGH!!!!

Shallow League who to drop
Superflex 10T .5PPR and wondering who I should end up dropping for a kicker. Yes I know the benches are way small for a 10T, we have some newbies to dynasty in the league who are scared to make the bench sizes bigger.
Trying to package some WRs for an upgrade but the JJ, Chase, MHJ, Amon-Ra, AJ Brown owners aren’t budging. I think Kendre is the least “valuable” asset but I like his opportunity this season.

2024.05.18 23:36 mikeramp72 Endgame #24

24th: Colby Donaldson 3.0 (Heroes Vs Villains - 5th)

\"So when the time was right, I made one more attempt\"
u/SMC0629:
Colby 3.0 is my favorite of his three iterations, and it has nothing to do with my opinion on Australia. The absolute deconstruction of Colby's abilities and spirit is somehow made into one of the most funny, mind-boggling, and emotional stories the show has given us. It all comes together with that final confessional, one of the best ever in the show, which proves to us that no matter what, he'll always keep fighting. Very deserved endgame for Colby 3.0.
~
u/DryBonesKing:
There… is a little bad blood for me internally about Colby 3.0 making Endgame. One, I am stunned that this group let Colby 3.0 outlast 1.0. I can’t believe Colby 1.0 got cut twice (since I ended up wasting an idol on the first attempt) before Colby 3.0. I find that borderline sinful lmfao. And two, I’m just annoyed that HvV ended up getting any representation in the Endgame. I really did not want this overrated season getting any representation and after focusing most of my concerns on someone like Sandra 2.0 or Parvati 3.0 or Rupert 3.0… I find out that I really messed up and that there were apparently Colby 3.0 stans here that actually wanted this Endgame. Whelp
Most of my issues though are meta-related, though. Colby 3.0 and Jerri 3.0 are the best parts of Heroes vs. Villains and the conclusion to their three-season story arc, even though it was diluted by Russell stealing away a decent chunk of their screentime, I do think what we did get to see was beautiful, from their cute little “Hey Colby” Interaction in that one reward challenge leading up to the finale with Jerri being visibly distraught about having to vote out Colby. It’s amazing stuff!
Colby 3.0 also does have the best storyline of the season, with being able to see how Survivor’s first “Hero” failed to live up to his own legacy, and sorta wallow in his own depression as a result of everything. There is a melancholy-air to Colby’s character, from watching him get his ass kicked in challenges to seeing him be an afterthought in strategies to even seeing him be part of one of the pettiest “family visit” scenes of all time when he just repeatedly fights with his brother Reid. And then obviously, there’s Colby’s final confessional, which I think is probably in contention for best confessional of all time. I don’t think there’s ever been a character’s returning appearance that feels anything like Colby 3.0, and that does make him really special. All things considered, I do have him ranked highly and I’m actually thrilled he topped Heroes vs. Villain’s rankings. I did want him to succeed and make Top 50. I just… wish he didn’t make Endgame. But meh
Overall Rank – 120/821
~
u/Zanthosus:
I’m going to be completely honest. This is the biggest WTF in our endgame to me. I might like Jane less overall, but I can understand why someone would have her in or around their endgame. Colby 3.0 though? I just don’t get it. I’m sure ninjedi will do a great job explaining it though. Also, it is kinda hilarious to me that the first non-Sandra HvV rep to get in is Colby of all people. Not Jerri. Not Parvati. Not Coach. Not even J.T. Colby. That’s just a hilarious legacy for this rankdown to have if I’m being honest.
~
u/Tommyroxs45:
Colby’s legacy in Heroes vs. Villains is unmatched, he’s Superman in a fat suit however you still see the desire for Superman. Him being the last hero remaining is so poetic and it makes him have one of the best confessionals of all time. Sad that he’s only the HvV rep as this season is literal perfection but I’m glad at least 1 person made it.
~
u/Regnisyak1:
From hero to zero to hero again, Colby 3.0 is truly an encapsulation of Heroes vs Villains' main themes about the blurring of lines between the two roles on Survivor, and how one does not fully exist in society. I love Colby 1.0, so I would have loved to see him here over 3.0, but Colby’s single confessional with the long pause in the finale of HvV warrants his position. Plus his not budging on an old-school game really sold his charm. Come on, Reed!
Personal Rank: 61/821. 9/10.
~
u/DavidW1208 will not be providing blurbs nor writeups for this endgame phase, however, his valuable contributions to this rankdown will be honored and acknowledged as we are taking his endgame rankings into full equal account for results. Much love David!! <3
~~~~~
u/ninjedi1:
Colby Donaldson 3.0 (5th Place, Heroes VS Villains)
When people talk about the OG Era of survivor or whatever we’re calling the first 40 seasons before New Era, people split the seasons into old school and new school, with Old School ending at season 20, Heroes VS Villains (which I personally disagree with, cause I feel like Nicaragua is the last old school season, but that’s a different conversation). Heroes VS Villains as the last of the “old school” season is meant to be a last hurrah as a number of early season players compete with more recent strategy savvy players from the newer seasons before the show truly made its transition from a social experiment to a game. And to me, no one truly represents that transition from old to new school, or better yet, represents the death of old school survivor than Colby Donaldson 3.0.
Everyone who’s watched Survivor long enough knows who Colby Donaldson is. He was the great American Texan who was a challenge beast and wanted to make sure that good people made it to the end, going up against Tina who was more deserving in his eyes over the easy beat Keith at the finale of AO. Then he made his return in Allstars where he would unfortunately but voted out fairly early on, but would come out of that season looking not that bad in comparison to a good number of other people! In the eyes of the viewing audience, he was still the great American hero, so it wasn’t surprising that the original survivor hero would return for Heroes VS Villains. Colby himself even talks about how its been a decade since he’s played the game, and he was ready to see if he still got it, and Jeff even sings his praises at the start of the game talking about how people were naming their kids after him. However, despite the hero returning to the coliseum to compete again, time would not be kind to him, as Colby would end up losing strength during the very first challenge, and would be dragged to the villains mat, losing a point for the heroes. A foreshadow of what Colby’s game was about to become.
However, it wasn’t all bad, as the heroes still win the challenge, and while Colby is aware about how rusty he is, he’s still having fun! However, that would quickly change as the days go on. He realizes that he needs to get into the rhythm of the game, and it was going to be miserable. He doesn’t have a clue about all the different connections and pregamed alliances when talking to Candace, leaving him out of the loop. He also gets annoyed with Sugar, who keeps trying to flirt with him and follow him around, which greatly annoys him. He would end up getting pulled into an alliance with Tom, JT, and Stephenie, and while they would all vote out Sugar at the very first tribal, everything goes wrong as JT would flip on the alliance, and after a fight with James during tribal where James yells at Steph and Colby defends her, Stephenie would get voted out in the second tribal. After that, Colby reflects a bit, talking to Tom about if the game at that point was for him, as he felt like he didn’t want to be a part of it. However, even though Colby was struggling with how the game was now, that fire that old school Colby had was still in there, as he was able to score a point against the Villain’s leader, Boston Rob, helping give the Heroes their first immunity win.
Colby would still struggle with the game, as he would ultimately be forced to take a backseat as Tom would lead the charge for them to get a bit farther, mainly using an idol he found to blindside Cirie as the heroes continued to downward spiral. This would actually help him in the game for a bit as Tom would be considered a bigger threat than him, and would be spared at the very next tribal. However, he was definitely next to go on his six person tribe, being the one on the outside of the 5 person alliance, and he needed a miracle to survive. However, that wouldn’t come, as both tribes would be going to tribal, so they were competing for individual immunity, and Colby performed terribly at it. At that point, he saw the writing on the wall and decided to just throw in the towel, telling his team that he knows he gone and they should have a relaxing day. However, James was injured, and the other members of the heroes feel like they need to keep Colby around as he would be better at challenges in the future, sparing Colby much to his surprise.
Colby is fully aware that there’s pressure on him to win the challenges for the heroes, and that its time to put up or shut up. Knowing that he was carrying the weight of the whole team seems to ignite something inside him. The old Colby Donaldson, the great american hero, had returned, and Colby would carry the heroes to victory at the next immunity challenge. In fact, he would be key in ensuring that the heroes wouldn’t lose the next three immunity challenges. It seemed that Colby was finally back into the game, and with the merge right there, it was time for olby, with the rest of the heroes, to lead the charge. However, that old school mentality of sticking together would fall apart at the merge with the new school strategy. The Heroes gave Russell an idol to save him, and Russell would use that generosity to give it to Parvati, who would use that and another idol to save Jerri and Sandra, sending JT home. Then when the heroes tried to rally together with Sandra, Candace would flip, getting Amanda out and leaving Colby and fellow hero Rupert to die. However, in their darkest hour, is where Colby would make a heroic move.
Since only Colby and Rupert were left, it was obvious that the villains would split their vote. Colby then realized that they might try to split their votes between them and Candace. Decided to avenge their fallen comrade Amanda, Colby pitches the idea of instead throwing away their vote to a villain, him and Rupert would instead cast their vote on the turncoat Candace, as if they split their vote on her, the vote would become a 5-3 vote and save them. The one moment of true strategic content from Colby would be a huge success, as it saved the two remaining true heroes and got rid of someone they knew they couldn’t trusted. This would work great for Colby as Russell would then work with him and Rupert to get Danielle, and suddenly the chance for a hero victory didn’t seem so out of reach now. However, Rupert would be the next to go, leaving Colby as the last hero standing by the time the finale rolls around.
Its fitting that Colby, the original hero, would end up being the last hero standing. Despite never getting a real foothold or truly understanding how the game now works, he was able to come so close to the end, and he just had to make it to the final 3 to win it. However, he loses F5 immunity to Parvati, and it looked like his game was done. In a sense of dejavu, we get another speech where he talks about how he knows he’s out, and they should all just have a relaxing afternoon. However, this time, we get a confessional talking about his speech, and how he almost believed it himself. But he’s never quit and anything and he won’t now. And then he just.. stays silent…lost in thought. Its genuinely one of my favorite confessionals in all of survivor, it just has so much emotional impact. We get that confident Colby that we’re so used to seeing for AO, and then just that long silence, as he contemplates the reality of his situation, maybe even coming to terms with it, before returning back to the Colby we’ve seen all season with one final line, “So when the time was right, I made one more attempt”. Colby’s last pitch is to Russell, saying that he’s much more likely to beat Parvati at F4 than Sandra. At this point though, Colby knows he’s done, as he talks about how this was the toughest season for him, and was the toughest journey to even get to that point, and in his final words, he calls himself an old dusty veteran, and that he just isn’t destined to win this game. With Colby voted out, the last true essence of old school survivor was gone, leaving in its wake a new school style to take hold.
2024.05.18 22:41 Foreign-Butterfly-43 Abortion regret plus mother has told people
I got an SA on May 2nd. I'm 39 and this was my first pregnancy. A week before I found out I was pregnant, I decided to stop seeing the father. We had been done for over a year. I started seeing him again, but wanted nothing serious from it and in doing so realized that he had become very toxic, even calling me out my name right before I found out I was pregnant. After telling him I was pregnant, he pretty much acted like he didn't want any more kids and said that he was too old. He didn't say anything to me for 2 weeks. He finally came around with having the baby but still said toxic stuff. He has 2 kids and is a good father so this was shocking. I've never really been a baby person but I really wanted this baby and felt like it might be my last chance. Knowing I would need serious support, I told my 2 sisters and parents. Of course my parents were excited, wanted me to keep it but the thing is they are in their mid sixties and would be able to help out only so much physically. My oldest sister who stays very close was not supportive and said I was too old and that her help would be limited. This really hurt because I helped her with her kids, I'm even a second mother to her oldest son. My only real support for help with the baby would be my other sister, who offered for me to move with her. She stays in another state though and I didn't really wanna move. I exhausted so many options to keep the baby. Every option just seemed like it wasn't gonna work. I just kept seeing myself struggling mentally and physically with a baby and dealing with a toxic father. I started getting really depressed and had anxiety all the time. I kept telling myself why am I sensing dread at a time when I'm supposed to be really happy. I went back and forth about myself about the abortion, even cancelling it at one point. I finally told myself that if it was meant for me to be a mommy, I will get another chance in a couple years maybe with a loving man who actually wants the baby. There's a couple small business ventures that I been wanting to start and I decided to go forward with those so in the event I do get pregnant again, I can hire help.
I knew I would regret the abortion some but told myself it was the right decision. But the day after I got it, I started to regret it so much. I now feel like I made the biggest mistake of my life. What if that was my last chance? What is the father wouldn't have been ok in co-parenting ? What if I had just moved with my sister? Started the business while I was pregnant and hired help? I barely eat, sleep only comes after drinking and every morning I wake up it hits me hard. Talking to my sister and cousin helps a lot. My cousin has been through this and told me I need to start my business, get some hobbies and get out the house.
She's absolutely right but every time I feel better I find myself running into another serious problem: my mother has now told family members that I got the abortion. I'm so devastated and angry that she would do this. I came to her for support in dealing with an extremely hard decision because she's my mother. Everybody knows abortion is serious topic and a lot of people don't agree with it. I just feel like this is going to seriously interfere with my healing. Now everyone will know my business. Imagine I'm healed and in a better place and I go around someone and they mention it or have something bad to say about it? And now every time I even remotely feel better, think about a better future and that I made my decision for a reason, I remember people know now. This is so stressful to where I can't stop thinking about it and keep wishing I were never in this situation.
2024.05.18 21:57 Regular-Kick-5311 CS Master Application Advices for students from different backgrounds
I am a 2nd year management engineering student from Istanbul Technical University(ITU). My major includes fundamental engineering classes and also economics/management/production etc but since the first summer break the time I did a sales internship in a startup that provides data annotation service to AI teams and from that day I want to work in a technology industry and have a technical role in a team. Since that day I started learning python and continued on machine learning.
Nowadays I’m about finish my 2nd year and need to have a roadmap for my future professional life. I believe having a CS major would help me to understand the systems behind it and allow me to understand more deeply of AI.
My current GPA is 3.5 and also I have a opportunity to apply for double major program with robotics engineering(I can not do with Computer engineering because it will probably require more than my current gpa) but my main goal is to have a CS master in USA. What can I do to increase my chances to get in one of the good universities?
I am open to any kind of advice🙌🏻
2024.05.18 21:39 FocusNo8609 Communication problem
I m19 met this girl f18 through a class and were assigned on a date for a project, went great and so much so that she asked for a 2nd one, I agreed, but she started talking about her crush, I thought I was just like a friend to her
but then she asked me to prom and more dates and I was so happy but then she thought I was a gay bottom, I thought oh ig im just her gay best friend, she invited me to a festival and I thought this was my chance to be with her, she introduced me to a friend and told me to hang out w her while she ran a booth and I didn’t wanna argue so I said fine,
she didn’t like that and I resented her bc I thought she saw me as someone to fall back on but never to be with me, I stop putting in effort and she asked for one more date as a test to see if she had feelings for me,
I’m Ngl I messed it up acting nervous bc I was scared to get into another relationship but didn’t tell her, after that we went quiet and I asked if we’re still going to prom, she said no since our feelings are mixed
so as a last ditch effort I asked her for once on a date and act how I should’ve acted and she said yes, I accidentally ignored her in the halls bc I was just about to text her, my fault, then I sent a list of places on where to go, she reacted w a skull emoji, unsent it and left it on read, I thought maybe she wanted me to pick the place so i texted “is it ok if it’s a surprise” no response so I decided to ask during class, at the end of class I reached my hand out and called her name (kinda softly) she walked past me but her friend saw me and I was embarrassed, after waiting until the end of the day and 20 more min outside I sent a goodbye message and she said she was playing volleyball,
I asked why didn’t she say that she said “ I thought you over heard me and my friend” she’s on the other side of the room , she basically said she lost feelings and offered to be friends I declined bc my feelings would get in the way, she seemed to understand, next day she waved I don’t bc I didnt react in time and the next day she posted stories alluding to me, we ignored each other and after 3 more stories she blocked me, I keep beating myself up but at the same time I get why she’s mad, give me insight on what to do now or what I should’ve done? Was I in the wrong ? Btw this lasted around 4 months
2024.05.18 21:34 tagoruto My GF 19F got in a fight with me 20M about a mutual friend. What should I do?
I have been in a relationship with Jess (fake name) for 7 months and we met through a mutual friend. It was my first relationship and her 2nd serious relationship. This mutual friend, Rex (fake name) has been a friend of mine since kindergarten and a friend of hers for about a year. He was constantly pushing boundaries in our relationship, he was pushing her to move faster with me, bringing up her ex at weird times, being disrespectful to her. We were discussing how to proceed with this and she confronted him and cut contact. I also talked to him and he apologized to me and told me that he was pushing boundaries and that he’ll never do it again. I then distanced myself from him to where I saw him like 3-4 times this year when I use to talk to him daily, and limit how much about my personal life I spoke of. There were a couple reasons why I hadn’t cut him off completely.
  1. I had a pretty severe depressive episode where I pushed everyone away and was a genuinely bad person to all my friends and he was the main person that helped me through it. He stayed by me and always did anything he could to help and I felt that I owed it to him to try to help him and give him a chance to prove that he wouldn’t push my boundaries again.
    1. He is the main glue of my friend group and cutting him off would make it a lot harder to see my friends which is why the only times I’ve seen him is group settings
    2. I owed him some money for a dental procedure I had a while ago and was paying him in monthly instalments, I didn’t want to cut him off before I had payed him back fully
Jess was never approving of me keeping my relationship with him and I had told her that I was planing to later on which I had meant and she seemed to understand that.
We got in a small fight recently about it where I explained my first reason and she realized that she was worsening her relationship with her mom for me and I was unwilling to cut out this toxic person from my life. (Her mom is not approving of my race and has had fights with her to break up with me) after some time to think she broke up with me.
We had an amazing relationship where we were both deeply in love and she had often described it as the best period of time in her life. Everything in the relationship was perfect apart from my relationship with Rex.
Since we’ve broken up and i have cut Rex out of my life (for my own reasons, not because of her ),moving on has been hard because I still love her and I know she still loves me and I want to know if it would be appropriate to try to start over.
2024.05.18 21:29 Thermos_of_Byr Book Nomination Thread
Hello ClassicBookClubbers! We have 4 more weeks left of A Tale of Two Cities, which means it’s time to begin the process of choosing a new book for our next read.
This post is set to contest mode and anyone can nominate a book as long as it meets the criteria listed below. To nominate a book, post a comment in this thread with the book and author you’d like to read. Feel free to add a brief summary of the book and why you’d like to read it as well. If a book you’d like to nominate is already in the comment section, then simply upvote it, and upvote any other book you’d like to read as well, but note that upvotes are hidden from everyone except the mods in contest mode, and the comments (nominees) will appear in random order.
Please read the rules carefully.
Rules:
  1. Nominated books must be in the public domain. Being a classic book club, this gives us a definitive way to determine a books eligibility, while it also allows people to source a free copy of the book if they choose to.
  2. No books are allowed from our “year of” family of subs that are dedicated to a specific book. These subs restart on January 1st. The books and where to read them are:
    *War and Peace- ayearofwarandpeace *Les Miserables- AYearOfLesMiserables *The Count of Monte Cristo- AReadingOfMonteCristo *Middlemarch- ayearofmiddlemarch *Don Quixote- yearofdonquixote *Anna Karenina- yearofannakarenina
  3. Must be a different author than our current book. What this means is since we are currently reading Dickens, no books from him will be considered for our next read, but his other works will be allowed once again after this vote.
  4. No books from our Discussion Archive in the sidebar. Please check the link to see the books we’ve already completed.
Here are a few lists from Project Gutenberg if you need ideas.
Sorted by popularity
Frequently viewed or downloaded
Reddit polls allow a maximum of six choices. The top nominations from this thread will go to a Reddit poll in a Finalists Thread where we will vote on only those top books. The winner of the Reddit poll will be read here as our next book.
We want to make sure everyone has a chance to nominate, vote, then find a copy of our next book. We give a week for nominations. A week to vote on the Finalists. And two weeks for readers to find a copy of the winning book.
Our book picking process takes 4 weeks in total. We read 1 chapter each weekday, which makes 5 chapters a week, and 20 chapters in 4 weeks which brings us to our Contingency Rule. Any book that is 20 chapters or less that wins the Finalist Vote means we also read the 2nd place book as well after we read the winning book. We do this so we don’t have to do a shortened version of our book picking process.
We will announce the winning book once the poll closes in the Finalists Thread, and begin our new book on Monday, June 17.
2024.05.18 21:25 RansackedRoom Why You Should Keep a Work Journal
TL;DR Please keep a work journal. Use it to record your small “wins” at work. Use it to build your resume for when you need a raise, a promotion, or a new job.
What do Firefighters Do All Day?
When I was a kid, I loved Richard Scarry picture books. He drew human-like animals who lived in “Busytown” and who worked in typical places: bank, firehouse, bakery, and so on. Richard Scarry explained to young readers what firefighters did all day: they rescued cats from tall trees. When the baker burned a batch of pies, the firefighters came and put out the burning pies. The firefighters had a big truck full of hoses, and they spent a lot of time fussing over the truck, too.
https://preview.redd.it/fpn6eflbl81d1.jpg?width=700&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f51b4cafb6766ad0b1a2baea4ec7357f9d58a85e
Children are not born knowing what a banker does, what a baker does, what a firefighter does. It’s both useful and lovely to explain basic job functions to children so they can understand how their town functions.
A lot of people, including job seekers on this subreddit, seem to think resumes are Richard Scarry books. People spend their resumes explaining what a baker does all day:
WHAT? That’s only a resume if you were terrible at your job. I’m serious; if I saw those three bullet points on a baker’s resume, I would assume the baker in question had just been fired.
The Point of Resume Bullet Points
Imagine you’ve been a professional baker for two years. You’ve applied for a new job. You’ve made it through the dumb website questionnaires, the redundant forms. You made it past the algorithm or the robot that rejects half the applicants right away. You’ve got your resume in front of me, the person who can decide to interview you, the person who can decide to hire you.
And you’re using this time to tell me what a baker does?
Your resume is not a place to educate children about your core job functions. Your resume is a place to persuade a manager that you are good at your job! If I’m hiring a baker, chances are good-to-excellent that I already know what a baker does all day. I want to know if you are a good baker!
Those are accomplishments. They show that you were good at your job. They show that you make improvements. They show that you measure things: How long was it taking you to make biscuits before? What did you change? How long did it take you to make biscuits after that change? Was the change your idea, or something your boss told you to try?
Now, maybe the tip jar example bothers you. Maybe that’s not about being a good baker, it’s more about being a greedy, self-interested employee. Guess what? As a hiring manager, I don’t care! I’m so impressed that you made a change and measured the impact of that change that I give you full points for that tip jar bullet point. Even if my bakery doesn’t use tip jars. Even if I’m hiring for a pastry chef position at a hotel, a role that doesn’t get tipped income. It’s the drive to measure, the habit of making small improvements at work, that’s what impresses me.
Lost Progress: My Doughnut Years
I worked at a doughnut shop right after college, years ago. It was not a happy time for me; I had a fancy degree, so I had expected to be doing more interesting things with my life than frosting doughnuts and pouring coffee for customers. But I’m a driven person. I improve things everywhere I go. I remember I impressed my boss one day when I came in with colorful printed signs I had made on my home ink-jet printer: “Chocolate Sprinkles,” “Raspberry Jelly,” “Lemon Creme.” We had been using hand-printed signs, Sharpie on cardboard, and these were a big improvement.
Our regular customers noticed the signs. I probably bragged about them or fished for compliments. That’s something 22-year-old me would have done. For sure the shop owner liked them. I remember the glossy paper I used made them easier to wipe clean, so we didn’t have to re-write the labels every few days.
I didn’t write any of this down in a journal. It all happened years ago; I barely remember it. But I should have been keeping a journal. If I had, then my resume would have featured bullet points such as:
Maybe some of those bullet points hit harder than others; I was young and it was a dumb job. But see how those bullet points say much more about what kind of baker I am than
“• rolled out dough for pies and bagels each morning” ?
How, When, and What to Journal at Work
If you have an amazing memory for tiny details, then maybe you don’t need to keep a journal. But most people should. Every month, or at least every quarter, sit down for twenty minutes and write down something that demonstrates you are good, skilled, dedicated, resourceful, whatever:
  1. “Neela Roberts, a regular client, said last month ‘Dave, whenever you process my invoice, I know it’s going to be correct, I don’t even have to check!’ That made me feel good.”
  2. “I caught a pricing typo on the quote sheet Business Development was preparing to send over to Acme Industrials. Maybe someone else would have caught it, but wow those Acme people are pushy about little details like that; I probably saved us $500, who knows?”
  3. “I’m glad I persuaded Marla to upgrade the A/V system in the conference room. We always used to have clients ask us ‘what? say that again?’ in our conference calls. Since we installed the new mics and speakers, I can’t remember that happening.”
  4. “Chris over in Receiving bought me a beer after work today, said he wanted to thank me for recommending Dale for the new loader position. Glad to hear Dale is working out so well over there.”
It's easy, in the glow of a big win at work, to think "I'll always remember this accomplishment. I'll always remember how I helped the team, the way this project came together, the nice things the boss said about our hard work. This is a memory I'll treasure."
And then Monday rolls around, and you're back to rolling out dough for the morning bagels. Unless you are a professional athlete, most days at work are not wins. Most days at work are not noteworthy. And the ho-hum of the every day can overwhelm your big and small accomplishments unless you make time to write them down regularly.
Why to Journal at Work
Even if you love your job, even if you are 10 years into a 20-year role with a guaranteed pension, a place you never intend to leave, you should still be doing this.
First, I don’t believe any job is guaranteed in this life.
Second, a list of improvements and accomplishments will help you get promotions and raises at your current job. Think of how much you’ll have to say at your annual review when you’ve been taking monthly notes on your significant contributions! It will help you defend yourself if you ever face cutbacks at work due to downturns and budget problems.
Third, journaling and measuring will make you a better worker! My whole mentality at work changed when i started measuring stuff. “Hey, I think we should reorganize the mailing room, because I think the workflow in there is just nuts. But you know what? Let’s note down how many packages we ship out each morning for the next three mornings, just to get a baseline. Then, when we make the changes I have in mind, we can see if things actually improve. Three more days with the old system won’t kill us, and it will let me measure my impact.”
Your work journal needs to be in a paper book or in a computer file you will retain access to even if you change jobs. We’ve all heard horror stories about layoffs at Zenith Techno where workers got an automated email at 5AM and lost all access to company files. Your work journal needs to be your property. Your career is more important than any one job!
If you work for the CIA or for a urologist, you might need to take some basic care to respect the privacy of clients and your employer. Maybe use fake names of patients. Don't put the secret recipe to your boss's famous caramel doughnuts on a server where doughnut hackers can get to it. But keep a journal! Do it!
Otherwise, this is all you’ve got to say for yourself at the end of the day:
“• turned off ovens and swept kitchen clean every night”
Image 1 (SF) Verse 7 Aquatic Park Solve
I know there are a lot of Aquatic Park solves, but I think about half of this is new, and I think there are a lot of things that fit. Historic photos are from https://opensfhistory.org/opensf/moreNeighborhoodPhotos.php?n=Aquatic_Park_/_Ft._Mason&bn=5 .
At stone wall's door
I think this might be a reference to the front of San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, but I think it is also likely that is not actually a hint to a location in SF. Rather the purpose of this line is to link the painting and verse. Image 1 has a window/door in stone.
Edit: Oh! You start next to Fort Mason, stone walls door!
The air smells sweet
Start in front of Ghirardelli Square.
Here are some visual clues matching this location.
11 orb lights in front of the square match the 11 moons in the photo, these seem newer that 1981, but they're not (photo from 1975).
The towers at the aquatic cove resemble the A shapes on the side of the dress
Ghirardelli Square clock 6
I stopped using the rose spiral as a clue, since there are spirals everywhere, but they are present on the ship and Ghirardelli Square
Angel Island (rose pedal), Alcatraz (door in rock), and Ghirardelli Square (Gh) are all visible from here.
Cable car turn around is here.
I don't know if this cable car still existed in 1981, but the dragon on it is similar to the dress (photo from 1962).
Shape on information sign resembles claw.
Not far away
High posts are three
I'm going with the common solve of the ship sail poles for this.
Education and Justice
For all to see
"Education for all to see" refers to the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park Museum, a museum seems like a perfect solve for this. The justice part I think is referring to Van Ness Ave and Polk St, both next to the starting location; James Van Ness and James Polk both had law degrees and were an attorney and lawyer respectively. That fact that they were more famous for being the Mayor of SF and the President fits the "For all to see part".
Sounds from the sky
Near ace is high
I think this is referring to the Blue Angel fighter pilot shows that take place over the Aquatic Park. Ace pilots flying loud jets. (I checked and these shows started in 1981)
Running north, but first across
"In jewel's direction" means west, because in image 1 the location of the pearl is the west end of Golden Gate Park, so we're going west then north. Towards Van Ness and then north along Van Ness.
In jewel's direction
Is an object
Of Twain's attention
I don't have a strong solve for this, when walking along the path from the above clue you are walking towards Black Point, the original dock to Alcatraz (Pier 4), and the Haskell House. Mark Twain wrote about Alcatraz and Black Point. There was a famous dual at the Haskell House that occurred while Mark Twain was a journalist in San Francisco. I can't find anything about this, but it seems like there is a good chance he wrote about this, maybe it's not online?
Giant pole There used to be a large tower (crematorium?) next to the San Francisco Fire Department Pumping Station #2. The path take you here.
Giant step
To the place
The casque is kept.
I'm not sure, this might require boots on the ground and could possibly by lost to the nearby construction. It could also mean go up the cliff to Black Point area, but if this is the case I don't know how you're supposed to find the exact location.
Visual clues for the ending
She is pointing to 4 on the left and 3 on the right, my solve ends between piers 3 and 4.
The one short two long pattern of piers 1-3 match the 1 short two long pattern of the fingers on her right hand, not just that, but if you line it up she is pointing towards where my solve ends.
I heard about this clue from here .
Directors at the Box Office: Clint Eastwood (Part 1)
https://preview.redd.it/m07tmkxgi81d1.jpg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a069dd209bca819edad29814e0bbd2b76eaa50db
As Reddit doesn't allow posts to exceed 40,000 characters, Eastwood's edition had to be split into two parts because his whole career cannot be ignored. The second part will be posted tomorrow.
Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's Clint Eastwood's turn.
Eastwood was a troublemaker at school, and he had a bunch of odd jobs such as lifeguard, paper carrier, grocery clerk, forest firefighter, and golf caddy. In 1951, he was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War and was discharged two years later. Through this, he got into contact with a Hollywood representative, who got him into acting classes and started his acting career. He got his start by starring in the hit show Rawhide, but he said he was exhausted by the experience. This caught the attention of some film producers and he decided to act in films directed by the then-unknown Sergio Leone. His career was on the rise, and then he got the chance to make his directorial debut.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was he to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze his career.
It should be noted that as he started his career in the 1970s, some of the domestic grosses here will be adjusted by inflation. The table with his highest grossing films, however, will be left in its unadjusted form, as the worldwide grosses are more difficult to adjust.
Play Misty for Me (1971)
"The scream you hear may be your own!"
His directorial debut. It stars Eastwood, Jessica Walter and Donna Mills, and follows a radio disc jockey being stalked by an obsessed female fan.
Before his colleague Irving Leonard died, he and Eastwood had discussed the idea of producing a film that was to give Eastwood the artistic control he desired, and his debut as a director. Eastwood said he was ready, "I stored away all the mistakes I made and saved up all the good things I learned, and now I know enough to control my own projects and get what I want out of actors."
The film was a huge success for Eastwood, and it also received positive reviews. So far, his directorial career was off to a great start.
  • Budget: $950,000.
  • Domestic gross: $10,600,000. ($81.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $10,600,000.
High Plains Drifter (1973)
"They'd never forget the day he drifted into town."
His second film. The film stars Eastwood, Verna Bloom and Mariana Hill, and follows a mysterious stranger who metes out justice in a corrupt frontier mining town.
Eastwood reportedly liked the offbeat quality of the film's original nine-page proposal and approached Universal with the idea of directing it, which would make it his first directed Western. The screenplay was inspired by the real-life murder of Kitty Genovese in Queens in 1964, which eyewitnesses reportedly stood by and watched. Holes in the plot were filled in with black humor and allegory, influenced by Sergio Leone.
It was well received, and the film even surpassed Play Misty for Me at the box office. Eastwood was just going up.
  • Budget: $5,500,000.
  • Domestic gross: $15,700,000. ($110.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $15,700,000.
Breezy (1973)
"Her name is Breezy."
His third film. It stars William Holden and Kay Lenz, and follows the relationship between a middle-aged real estate agent and a young hitchhiker.
This was his first directed film without starring on it. And his lack of presence certainly hurt the film; it received mixed reviews and flopped at the box office.
  • Budget: $750,000.
  • Domestic gross: $200,000. ($1.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $217,753.
The Eiger Sanction (1975)
"His lifeline, held by the assassin he hunted."
His fourth film. Based on the novel by Trevanian, the film stars Eastwood, George Kennedy, Vonetta McGee, and Jack Cassidy. It follows Jonathan Hemlock, an art history professor, mountain climber, and former assassin once employed by a secret government agency, who is blackmailed into returning to his deadly profession for one last mission.
The film received mixed reactions for its writing, and it wasn't a box office success either.
  • Budget: $9,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $14,200,000. ($82.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $14,200,000.
The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)
"An army of one."
His fifth film. Based on the novel Gone to Texas by Forrest Carter, it stars Eastwood, Chief Dan George, Sondra Locke, Bill McKinney and John Vernon. The film tells the story of Josey Wales, a Missouri farmer whose family is murdered by Union militia during the Civil War. Driven to revenge, Wales joins a Confederate guerrilla band and makes a name for himself as a feared gunfighter. After the war, all the fighters in Wales' group except for him surrender to Union soldiers, but the Confederates end up being massacred. Wales becomes an outlaw and is pursued by bounty hunters and Union soldiers as he tries to make a new life for himself.
Eastwood was fascinated by the novel and he bought the film rights, hoping to star on the film. He got Philip Kaufman involved as screenwriter and possible director, but left after disagreeing with Eastwood in the material adapted to the screen. Kaufman insisted on filming with a meticulous attention to detail, which caused disagreements with Eastwood, not to mention the attraction the two shared towards Locke and apparent jealousy on Kaufman's part in regard to their emerging relationship. This caused Eastwood to take over as the director. Kaufman's firing angered the DGA, as he did most of the pre-production, and sanctioning a $60,000 fine. This resulted in the Director's Guild passing a new rule, known as "the Eastwood Rule", which prohibits an actor or producer from firing the director and then personally taking on the director's role.
The film received critical acclaim, and in subsequent years, is ranked among Eastwood's greatest films. It was also a huge success at the box office, doubling his previous highest grossing film. It was also one of the few Western films to receive critical and commercial success in the 1970s at a time when the Western was thought to be dying as a major genre in Hollywood.
  • Budget: $3,700,000.
  • Domestic gross: $31,800,000. ($174.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $31,800,000.
While it received mixed reviews, it became another box office success for Eastwood, becoming his now highest grossing film.
  • Budget: $5,500,000.
  • Domestic gross: $35,400,000. ($182.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $35,400,000.
Bronco Billy (1980)
"The most outrageous of 'em all."
His seventh film. The film stars Eastwood and Sondra Locke, and focuses on the financially-struggling owner of a traditional Wild West show and his new assistant.
It became another critical and commercial success for Eastwood, who referred to the film as one of his most affable shoots of his career.
  • Budget: $6,500,000.
  • Domestic gross: $24,265,659. ($91.9 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $24,265,659.
Firefox (1982)
"The most devastating killing machine ever built... his job... steal it!"
His eighth film. Based on the novel by Craig Thomas, it stars Eastwood, Freddie Jones and David Huffman. The Soviets have developed a revolutionary new jet fighter, called "Firefox". Naturally, the British are worried that the jet will be used as a first-strike weapon, as rumors say that the jet is undetectable on radar. They send ex-Vietnam War pilot Mitchell Gant on a covert mission into the Soviet Union to steal the Firefox.
The film received mixed reviews, but it earned almost $47 million, becoming Eastwood's highest grossing title as director.
  • Budget: $21,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $46,708,276. ($151.1 million adjusted)
While the film received acclaim, it earned just $4.4 million, becoming his second worst performer.
  • Budget: $2,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $4,484,991. ($14.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $4,484,991.
Inspector Harry Callahan, famous for his unconventional and often brutal crime-fighting tactics, is tasked with tracking down the serial killer.
The film received mixed reviews from critics, but it earned over $150 million worldwide, Eastwood's first film to pass that milestone. It's also very popular for including the iconic catchphrase, "Go ahead, make my day."
  • Budget: $22,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $67,642,693. ($212.1 million adjusted)
There was no stopping Eastwood: another critical and commercial success.
  • Budget: $6,900,000.
  • Domestic gross: $41,410,568. ($120.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $41,410,568.
Heartbreak Ridge (1986)
"The scars run deep."
His 12th film. It stars Eastwood, Marsha Mason, Everett McGill, and Mario Van Peebles. The story centers on a U.S. Marine nearing retirement who gets a platoon of undisciplined Marines into shape and leads them during the American invasion of Grenada in 1983.
The film was inspired by an account of American paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division using a pay telephone and a credit card to call in fire support during the invasion of Grenada, and fashioned a script of a Korean War veteran career Army non-commissioned officer passing on his values to a new generation of soldiers. Eastwood was interested in the script and asked his producer, Fritz Manes, to contact the US Army with a view of filming the movie at Fort Bragg. However, the Army read the script and refused to participate, due to Highway being portrayed as a hard drinker, divorced from his wife, and using unapproved motivational methods to his troops, an image the Army did not want.
It received mixed reviews, with some deeming the film as "imperialist propaganda". But it was still another box office success.
  • Budget: $15,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $42,724,017. ($121.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $121,700,000.
Bird (1988)
"There are no second acts in American lives."
His 13th film. The film stars Forest Whitaker and Diane Venora. It is constructed as a montage of scenes from saxophonist Charlie Parker's life, from his childhood in Kansas City, through his early death at the age of 34.
Eastwood, a lifelong fan of jazz, had been fascinated by Parker ever since seeing him perform live in Oakland in 1946. He approached Chan Parker, Bird's common-law wife on whose memoirs the script was based, for input, and she lent Eastwood and arranger Lennie Niehaus a collection of recordings from her private collection Before Eastwood was involved, Richard Pryor was originally cast as Parker.
Despitive positive reviews, it performed poorly, earning just $2.2 million in North America.
  • Budget: $14,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $2,181,286. ($5.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $2,181,286.
White Hunter Black Heart (1990)
"An adventure in obsession."
His 14th film. Based on the novel by Peter Viertel, it stars Eastwood, Jeff Fahey, George Dzundza, Alun Armstrong and Marisa Berenson. It follows a famous movie director, John Wilson, who goes to Africa to make his next movie. He is an obstinate, contrary director who'd rather hunt elephants than take care of his crew or movie. He has become obsessed with one particular elephant and cares for nothing else.
Despite positive reviews, it made just $2.3 million domestically, not even 10% of the budget.
  • Budget: $24,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $2,319,124. ($5.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $2,319,124.
The Rookie (1990)
His 15th film. The film stars Eastwood, Charlie Sheen, Raul Julia, Sônia Braga, Lara Flynn Boyle, and Tom Skerritt. It follows a veteran police officer teamed up with a younger detective, whose intent is to take down a German crime lord in downtown Los Angeles, following months of investigation into an exotic car theft ring.
It received negative reviews for its acting and story, and it became another flop for Eastwood. That's three bombs in a row. Ouch.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $21,633,874. ($51.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $21,633,874.
Unforgiven (1992)
"Some legends will never be forgotten. Some wrongs can never be forgiven."
His 16th film. It stars Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Richard Harris and Morgan Freeman. It follows William Munny, a widower with two young kids, who was once a very vicious gunfighter who gave up everything after marriage. Now, a man named Schofield Kid brings him an offer that he cannot refuse, forcing him to come out of retirement for one last job.
David Webb Peoples wrote the script all the way back to 1976, and it was optioned by Francis Ford Coppola, but he lacked the funds needed to helm it. By Eastwood's own recollection, he was given the script in the "early 80s" although he did not immediately pursue it, because, according to him, "I thought I should do some other things first". Eastwood has long asserted that the film would be his last traditional Western, concerned that any future projects would simply rehash previous plotlines or imitate someone else's work. He dedicated the film to his close friends and mentors Sergio Leone and Don Siegel. Hackman initially refused to participate as his daughters were upset that he was starring in too many violent films, but he became fascinated by the script that he agreed.
It opened with $15 million and it legged all the way to $100 million after playing for almost one year, closing with $159 million worldwide, his now highest grossing film. The film received Eastwood's best reviews of his career, with many considering the film as his magnum opus as director. It received 9 Oscar nominations, and won four: Best Picture and Best Director for Eastwood, Best Supporting Actor for Hackman, and Best Film Editing. So Eastwood, on top of being a reliable box office draw, was now a 2-time Oscar winner.
  • Budget: $14,400,000.
  • Domestic gross: $101,167,799. ($225.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $159,167,799.
A Perfect World (1993)
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $31,130,999. ($67.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $135,130,999.
The Bridges of Madison County (1995)
"The human heart has a way of making itself large again even after it's been broken into a million pieces."
Uneven club battles??
We are club ranked 1300 in power rankings and they paired us with a sub 500 club. I have the 2nd highest OVR in our club (at 108) and I dont even stand a chance against their worst guy. No one in the club wants to battle because none of us stand a chance. This is the 2nd time this happened to us in the last week and it use to never happen. Whats going on? And will there be a balanced club battle matchmaking in the future? Im sure others have experienced this
Freedom National Convention of 1904 (Nominations) American Interflow Timeline
Hamilton Fish II put down Barnum’s note on the speaker’s podium and a silence that spoke louder than screams put the convention to a pause. Fish was Assistant Secretary of State under John D. White during the Barnum Administration, he had worked diligently under the administration and had not lost his prestige even after martial law. Being the son of the most praised president in recent history certainly helped him stay relevent. Even President Custer, the man who claimed Barnum made America “…hell incarnate.”, had been close with Fish. Connecticut as well remained majority Pro-Barnum even after martial law, being the late president’s home state, many there justified his actions of old. Oscar Underwood watched with his colleagues, quickly writing a note to Milford W. Howard who was beside him. Finally, the silence was broken. “To Ms. Barnum! Like her father before her, a defender of freedom and the Freedomites! Cheers!”. Members in the audience would follow suite and cheers of “Barnum! Barnum!” would engulf the building. Howard would open Underwood’s note, “Tarnation! The cycle continues.”. Nearby, James R. Garfield peeked at the note, and looked at Underwood with an expression of morbid agreement, followed by a whisper to Underwood, “We cannot let this happen again.”.
The Convention
Ballots 1st
Joseph Gurney Cannon 82
Henry Cabot Lodge 314
Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. 231
William Howard Taft 210
Caroline Barnum 101
Multitudes of delegates would flock to the Barnumite column. These delegates would be ideologically diverse, but united by the same morals. As enthusiasm ran high for the Barnumites, the Freedomite Party elites were in total panic. Past nominee William Pierce Frye and Party House Leader Charles Phelps Taft entered private negotiations to prevent a looming deadlock of the convention. Even Cannon, who was an avid Barnumite supporter back in his day, dismayed at the thought of Barnum’s nomination. Many in the party objected to her nomination due to the fact that she was a woman, which not only would harm her nationally as women weren’t allowed to vote in elections, but many couldn’t fathom a non-male candidate leading the party. Seeing the writing on the wall, Cannon would drop out of the race and tow his support behind Lodge, who them achieved a massive lead in the delegate count. Though a handful of Cannon’s extremely Pro-Barnumite supporters would inadvertently shift their support to Barnum. Supporters of Holmes and Taft remained optimistic, even as their candidates continued to be unenthusiastic about winning the nomination.
Ballots 2nd
Henry Cabot Lodge 380
Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. 231
William Howard Taft 211
Caroline Barnum 116
Lodge’s lead widened far beyond the other candidates, yet remained short of the delegates needed to achieve the nomination. Many of the higher ups of the party slyly urged the delegates of the other main candidates to shift to Lodge’s pool, in order to prevent Barnum possibly overtaking Lodge if the opposition rallied to her. Though the majority both Holmes’ and Taft’s delegates refused to back either Lodge or Barnum, instead demanding that the Lodge delegates stand down to support another candidate. Holmes’ campaign manager Byron Gunner offered support to the Lodge delegates if they shifted their to vote to the US Ambassador to Germany George von Lengerke Meyer, known as one of the most popular and respected men in America. Once again however, the Lodge campaign vehemently refused to budge on Lodge’s nomination, even though Lodge himself pragmatically seemed open to the idea of a compromise candidate behind closed doors. The delegates remained at a standstill as cooler heads tried to negotiate some sort of compromise, although it was time for the third ballot before anything could be agreed upon.
Ballots 3rd
Henry Cabot Lodge 378
Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. 231
William Howard Taft 211
Caroline Barnum 118
FAILURES! FAILURES! ALL FAILURES!”, chants and laughs the hardened Barnum delegates, who have grown frustrated at the other candidates for their resistance. Nicholas Murray Butler, the President of Columbia University and a steady Barnumite delegates would suddenly gathered attention among his comrades by starting a speech. “What has these people for you? They labeled the old president a clown during his tenure! Yet, observe those in this hall who quarrel among themselves!”. Negotiations were getting desperate, as attendees of the convention began to question if their support was centered on the wrong place. Alas, the murmurs of hall ceased abruptly. A vehicle was heard pulling up to the convention. People move out to clear a path. “It’s Mr. Taft!". William Howard Taft has finally arrived from Fujian after a long journey to Connecticut. Almost immediately he met Lodge to begin a conversation. As the fourth ballot drew near, Taft and Lodge emerged from a smoke-filled room. Taft would pull out of the race and declared his support for Lodge’s nomination. “This decision comes without reluctance. Mr. Lodge has proven himself capable to handle the duties of a leading politician from his work in the Senate. As so he will fulfill the duties of a president.”. Taft’s support did not come so easily however, Lodge made a pledge in exchange for support, he would reform the Bureau of Public Safety and close down their extreme forms of persecutions if he were elected. The Barnum and Holmes delegates could not believe their ears, yet it clear that it was reality.
Ballots 4th
Henry Cabot Lodge 583
Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. 235
Caroline Barnum 120
I am truly honored and graced by the position relayed upon me by the Freedom National Convention and to the members of the Freedom Party…
My work in the congressional branch has revealed to me many impartial issues with the handling of the our nation…
The very foundations of American culture relies on its citizens to be the pinnacle of the worldly civilization. A civilization of which we emulate ourselves upon the ever-persecuting and disingenuous world.
We are entering an era fundamentally hostile to our ideals, whereas many seek to strike us at our core, to tear liberty itself from our roots...
From the time of President Clay, to time the President Fish, and to present, we remain steadfast in true American beliefs. From the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific, and from the Caribbean to the Great Lakes, we have truly shown that American sovereignty dominates above all…
We delight in our own individual independence and democracy. Far different from the imperial House in Mexico and the colonial empires scattered upon God’s earth.
We shall not be incompetent, we shall not be dismayed, we shall be forever unbounding in our search for freedom!
…and to live without uncertainty forevermore. To God be the glory! May He guide us as we continue to do His work.
Lodge would accept the nomination. The Holmes delegation sigh but reluctantly accepted Lodge’s victory. The Barnum delegation were more willing to drag their feet. Upon Lodge’s mention of Presidents Clay and Fish, an attendee would shout, “Mention Adams and Barnum, you basher! Were they not Freedomites like yourself?!”, followed by sounds of agreement by fellow Barnumites. As the Barumites snubbed him and retreated back into the shadows, progressives still demanded representation in the ballot, and Lodge acknowledged this as a necessary. Lodge would personally ask Holmes if wanted to his running, but Holmes outright turned him down, once again stating he never enthusiastic about the presidency and left his possible nomination to his supporters. Instead Holmes suggested a man that had supported his nomination since the beginning, Senator Garfield. This motion was also backed by major figures such as Representative Underwood and Senator McKinley. Lodge would take this advice, and soon Garfield would accept Lodge’s nomination for the Vice Presidency. Logically, this would be the best choice of Lodge, however as the newly empowered Barnumites stare at him from the shadows, many in the party know that demands for their representation in a new government could not be left ignored.
2024.05.18 20:54 Tg11T Do you think there should be a mid or post credits scene for Supergirl [2026]?
Do you think there should be a Supergirl mid or post credits scene since this movie under James Gunn & Peter Safran's regime of DC films is supposed to be the 2nd film in the DCU right after Superman set for release in June of 2026?
Yes or no? Why or why not?
Me personally, I will say yes there should be a post credits scene. However, only on the basis that you are building towards something bigger. By something bigger, a shared universe. But obviously you do not rush the shared universe concept right away but you build towards it slowly. Hence the post credits scene.
So I will say why? Because not only are you building future excitement for DC projects going forward but you also get to test it amongst DC fans to see if it will be successful in that regard.
