2024.05.13 16:24 machusenpai Brush advancement & retardation

Alright guys, I went the oldschool route with a brushed forklift dc motor. It is an 8 inch pump motor that I used for converting a Smart Fortwo to a 5 speed manual & electric. However I can really seem to understand the brush timing issue. The motor draws very little amps at low rpm and has very little torque at low rpm. However once it reaches about 40% of its speed the amps and torque suddenly rush like an ICE engine. However for my application, I would require low rpm torque instead. Is the motor brush advanced so much that it only has speed and power at high rpm? Also, which way do you advance or retard brushes?

2024.05.12 20:53 ICanGetThem 2M revenue, no profit for me

Hi - I’ve been running a business for 5 years. Our progression (revenue) has looked like 180k->400k->750k->1.1M -> looking like 1.8-2M this year.
I have nobody to talk to who has similar experiences to lean on for advice. The issues are that every time revenue increases, it seems like labor, insurance, expenses, etc creep up too. I mean, that’s expected -> but I still can’t quit my job and go full time into this because I would end up replacing Some of the manual labor component only to be able to pay myself, and would essentially not have enough time to do the Ecom / marketing / sales component which I think has got us here in the first place.
Why? Well, to increase revenue every year -> we add more SKUs. More SKUs = more inventory => more $ to buy inventory needed. More labor needed to package, ship, and take deliveries, build pallets, organize inventory etc…
I just purchased another industrial printer for 8k. I just installed two HVAC systems for 14k. I just bought 2 shipping containers for 4K. Another forklift for 15k. Etc..
We’re running out of room at our 10ksqft warehouse and have resorted to using shipping/ocean containers as additional storage outside.
I thought by now there would be diminishing requirements/ crossover for labor needs. I mean, it almost seems like it’s a direct 1:1 for new revenue -> more labor required. I’ve looked at automating the business with respect to packaging the products automatically, but those machines are 80-140k domestic, and that’s just for the packaging component only…
Additionally -> we need insurance and are in a high risk industry, so my insurance is 13k on 1.2M revenue. I can only imagine it being 20k next year…
You might say “why not raise prices” -> I’ve noticed a direct correlation to raising prices and seeing SKUs drop to 0 revenue overnight. We have competitors and they’re able to sustain at this pricepoint, in the same type of business model. The only thing I can potentially see as an issue is shipping costs are sometimes 30-50% total gross revenue… so maybe I could do some recon on our competitors and see if they get cheaper rates. But we have FedEx + UPS reps and are a little bit better than ShipStation rates for example -> which are pretty aggressive.
We have had companies cold outreach us for our services and one large F500 company invite us to their HQ to see how we could work together, asked about cash infusions / buyout -> but I don’t want to give up, and a buyout of a company doing 2M with minimal net profit is probably a shitty payout. Maybe I’m not seeing the forest for the trees and should just keep onward with this path.

2024.05.05 17:37 ZackyGood I need some advice. Am I wrong for saying my job is more laborious than taking care of a 3 month old?

Ever since our 2nd child was born I started working earlier hours at one of my jobs to help accommodate my wife while she is on maternity leave. This means I am waking up at 4-4:30am so I can drive an hour and get to work at 6am I’m off work at 3pm and pick my son up from daycare at 4:30. This is a plan my wife agreed on, she said that picking our son up from daycare helps her a lot because she’s able to take care of our daughter and get dinner ready.
Over the last month and a half, my 2nd job has picked back up and I’m now working 2-3 12 hour shifts a week on top of my 40 hour work week. So I’m working close to 75 hours a week. For my main job, I work at a warehouse manually loading trucks with thousands of pounds of general business supplies and assemble hospital equipment there as well. At the end of the shift, this leaves me exhausted to the point of almost falling asleep in traffic on my way home every day. Then when I get home, I am my son’s wrestling partner while my wife cooks dinner.
At night, depending on the day, my wife and I swap who puts our son to bed. We go to his bedroom between 7:30 and 8 and he falls asleep close to 8:45. Since I started my 2nd job, I’ve been falling asleep in my son’s room while putting him to bed because I’m exhausted.
Now she’s mad at me for falling asleep while putting our son to bed because I’m not spending any time with my wife. I’ve told her that I want to spend time with her, but I’m putting our son to bed at the same time I should be going to bed. But she wants me to stay up with her and watch Dexter while we pay attention to our phones and I rub her feet.
I told her I can’t do that, I need to sleep. She insists that she gets less sleep than I do because she’s up all night tending to our 3 month old. She bed shares with us and is attached to my wife nipple all night while they sleep, so I’m not sure where the “tending to” comes into play.
It’s currently 8:21am on a Sunday morning. I just got off of FaceTime with my wife. Her and the kids were saying good morning to me while am at work. She told me that she was upset again that I had fallen asleep in our son’s room last night while putting him to bed. So I told her what I believe is the truth.
“I would LOVE to stay home all day taking care of my kids, go to Costco 2-3 times a week to get groceries that are going to go rotten in the fridge, clean the house and do some gardening. I myself take 20k-25k steps a day and lift thousands of pounds of equipment. I’m stuck in traffic for 2.5 hours a day trying not to fall asleep at the wheel.”
She mentions to me that I’m not putting in an equal amount of time into taking care of our house, to which I said, “this is part of your job! I can’t take parts of my job and delicate it towards you, so why can you do that to me. I’m already a 50/50 parent (maybe 45/55 because she makes my son his breakfast and lunch and gives the kids a bath because she’s already in the bath.) what more do I need to do?”
She hung up on me.
So now I have 10 hours left in my shift. And when that is done, I know I’ll be arriving home to a messy house with a kid that has been watching TV all day because mom’s “just so exhausted”.
Thanks for letting me air out my grievances.
Edit: I should mention that my 2nd job is as a security guard for the film industry.
Edit 2: I’m not trying to compare jobs. I’m trying to explain to her what it is I do at work because she thinks I just sit on a forklift all day.
Edit 3: this period of working 75 hours a week will only last for another 4ish months. Then it will go down to 48hours.

2024.05.03 12:00 BoastBaloney Where can I get a Datsun 280zx in the UK

New to this sub. I’ve been wanting to get a new car for a while and love the look of the Datsun 280zx.
I’m looking for a manual, RHD in running condition. It doesn’t have to be in perfect condition, but enough so it runs well and I can drive it. My budget is around £20k
The problem is, I can’t seem to find any anywhere. It’s like they don’t exist. I have found some that are RHD but they are automatics. The rest are all LHD.
Does anyone know where I can find one in the UK. Or do I just have to get lucky and hope one pops up on the internet. Are there any specific places/auction houses that sell them. Any help would be appreciated

2024.05.02 00:58 Aguaflo Forklift

Forklift
Job I just started has a forklift that I was told wasn’t operational. Noticed it wasn’t fully plugged. Check today turnt the key it lit up but couldn’t turn over? I am unfamiliar with this model as i use something completely different for dock work at FedEx. When it did light up it displayed a ‘foot sw’ warning light unsure of what that is or what I’d do to get it to turn over. If I had the manual I probably wouldn’t be asking here.

Heavy Lifting Equipment - Interstate Heavy Equipment
One of the most important aspects of any construction site is personal protective equipment or PPE. When site managers hear this, they immediately think of hard hats, gloves, reflector jackets, gumboots, hard shoes, and goggles. These are, of course, necessary safety equipment for those working on your construction site, but they are insufficient. In addition, most people would overlook the requirement for back support devices for those who move large manual goods at their workplace, including heavy lifting equipment.
You should invest in the correct back support straps for your personnel in addition to your safety footwear and other PPE components. Most building materials are pretty heavy, and regularly lifting persons will develop back problems to varying degrees. Therefore, you should have the correct construction equipment to lift weighty objects and back PPE for your employees. Here are some of the numerous types of heavy lifting equipment to think about:

Forklifts

These are also known as lift trucks, and they are motorized trucks that come in a variety of load capacities and sizes, with the majority of them having a weight capacity of 1 to 5 tons. Forklifts use propane, diesel, or gasoline to power its engine. A handful of the more modern ones are electrically operated and have rechargeable batteries. You may personalize your forklifts by adding different attachments to handle specific weights and make them fit your building site.
