2024.03.19 12:01 Yurii_S_Kh A miracle of the Lord: a true story of faith

A miracle of the Lord: a true story of faith
Simona Georgieva
Fr. Stoyan, from the Holy Trinity Church in the Bulgarian town of Dobrich, has for over eight years been helping people who have fallen on hard times. In 2004, at his initiative a shelter was built as an addition to the church where he has served as rector since 1997. Here, people who have lost all hope in the future can find refuge. The priest stretches out his hand to help scores of needy people; single mothers and their children, orphans, the elderly, and the simply desperate. They all find hope after meeting this Christian.
Fr. Stoyan
This man of God is famous for his mercy throughout Bulgaria. His uncle, Fr. Georgy, was the first of his relatives to become a priest. He was also Fr. Stoyan's spiritual father. Stoyan was brought up in the faith, and remembers from his early childhood how his uncle turned his parents’ house into a church in the village of Zheglartsy. In 1962, Stoyan entered the seminary. The first to become priests in his family were his two brothers, the twins Marin and Nedyalko, and then the older brother; even one of his sisters is graduating from the theological department.
Fr. Stoyan does not drive a large car and does not make use of his status as a servant of God to better his material standing. More than that, he has built seven churches and one monastery, feeds the hungry, gives shelter to the poor, and comforts the despairing.
In 2003, three brothers, Moslems, came to this priest hoping to find food and a roof over their head. One of the brothers was named Erkhan. Fr. Stoyan says that he is a kind and honest fellow. The three brothers would help Fr. Stoyan from day to day, building churches in various villages. Erkhan would listen to Fr. Stoyan's instructions with great thirst and reverence, and the priest's kindness had a strong influence on him, despite their differing religions.
Erkhan was a Moslem, but the more time he spent with the Christian Stoyan, the more he saw the priest’s striving to do good, the more he wanted to change his religious views. His wife Tanya is a Christian. They had been without children for thirteen years. His wife easily conceived, but every time, late in the pregnancy, the child would die. This happened nine times.
Spending time with Fr. Stoyan and other priests, Erkhan saw them serving molebens, and he began to secretly go to the church and pray for Tanya and himself. He had a crisis in his Moslem faith at the moment when his again pregnant wife had another miscarriage in the fifth month of pregnancy. In despair, Erkhan asked Fr. Stoyan to baptize him, although he knew that his mother, who was against his marriage to Tanya, would be very pained at this. Nevertheless, he resolved to take this step.
His parents were zealous Moslems—his father taught himself to read the Koran, and carried it around with him, often retelling stories from it to Erkhan. Nevertheless, he made the request of Erkhan's mother for her son's permission to be baptized. In 2009, Erkhan received the Christian faith with the name Emil Ivanov, and later, Emmanuel. The man of God Stoyan became his spiritual instructor.
Whether it was by the strength of his new faith or for the sake of his humility and enormous desire, we don't know; but in 2010 a miracle happened: Emmanuel's wife gave him a healthy son, who they baptized with the name Alexander. It was the birth of the child for whom had he long waited and suffered that inspired him to study in the theological seminary, and become even more convinced of the power of the Christian religion. On December 27, 2012, Emmanuel was ordained a deacon by Metropolitan Kirill of Varna.
https://preview.redd.it/4uhhjqcmv9pc1.png?width=550&format=png&auto=webp&s=0db6af0e411ce3eef3f5e97a605009225eb2ca24
Now Father Deacon is ready to begin the path to the priesthood—although his ordination into the deaconate was a greatly unexpected event for him. It took place at the personal decision of Metropolitan Kirill. Before this, Emmanuel served as a subdeacon and altar attendant. Now as a deacon he has the right to read certain prayers in church. His first-born son Alexander is also learning to read: he says the "Our Father".
The baptism of Erkhan is not without precedent in these parts. He is not the first Moslem who has decided to change his religion after getting to know Fr. Stoyan. Nikolina, also a Moslem, once found herself in an utterly hopeless situation and went in search of salvation from the priest. She received living space for her children, work for herself, support, friendship, and security for tomorrow. For all this goodness she wanted to convert to the Christian faith. Fr. Stoyan's wife Elena became her godmother.
Erkhan's biography is essentially a story with Christian virtue as the main theme, and not a clash of religions. Regardless of many people's skeptical relationship to their country's traditions and religion [Orthodox Christianity], there still are people in Bulgaria who convert out of personal conviction. That is their right.
In this story, the important thing is the desire of some people to help others, regardless of religion. After all, Fr. Stoyan teaches that God creates people—it is not people who create God... This sounds like a medieval legend or a Christmas tale, but somewhere over there, in northeastern Bulgaria, far from today's moral corruption, there lives a man who is building churches and monasteries, who is giving people little miracles— miracles just as large or small as they need to believe in the Lord.

2023.11.28 15:17 Welvath18 Indie Film loosely based on Beauty & the Beast - British? 90s? Dystopian?

[FOUND] Confident-Hat8658 commented the movie "No Such Thing" (2001) which includes the Beauty and the Beast character types, the modern setting, the airport scene, and the missing/dead man. It is currently free to watch on Amazon so I will finally be able to see if it was good or not!
Back in the wild west days of Netflix, when they were filling their online catalog with anything they could get their hands on, I saw a number of odd indie films pop up. There were some movies that were simply less popular, like She-Devil with Meryl Streep, and others that have almost been lost to time, like Happy Accidents, and I enjoyed stumbling across a lot of those, but some seem genuinely lost due to their small footprint. On top of that, this was around 2010 or so, when I was in high school and still nervous about horror movies or anything rated R. One film I was intrigued by yet didn't finish watching out of cowardice was a Beauty and the Beast reimagining from the 90s or early 2000s. It was a British/UK/Irish film about a woman (blonde) whose father went to an island or something for whatever reason, and was killed by the monster who lives there. She then decided to follow him and find out what really happened.
I have used every bundle of keywords I can think of, but there are too many Beauty & the Beast stories to sift through and the same ones keep coming up. The Disney versions (1991 and 2017), Beastly (2011), Beast (2022), The Beast (2023), Penelope (2006), Beauty & the Beast TV series (1987 and 2012), Tanya's Island (1980), others from 1987 and 2014... Everything I find is too fairytale or too crime drama or too medieval or too tropical. I have been trying this on and off for about 10 years now with no luck. Help!! Maybe someone can point me to lists of old Netflix catalogs?
What little I watched of the film follows the young woman lead character as she tries to leave for the monster's home. The story takes place in a slightly futuristic setting, though the only difference I picked up on was that everyone she interacts with is basically fed up with life. It's a dog-eat-dog world, overcrowded, dystopian. The airport is full of people pushing and shoving to get where they need to go. People are rude and unhelpful. I have some vague memories of her talking with an attendant or someone who should help her, but they don't try very hard. Maybe she needed a pass to leave the country/town/airport? I'm not sure. The attendant might have been a woman. She might have had a run-in with a man. I only watched a little of the movie because I was already nervous about it being rated R (pretty sure it was) and being a horror story (maybe just adult themes), and the unpleasant atmosphere of what I watched wasn't appealing to me right then. I planned to come back and watch it another time, but the catalog shifted and I forgot about it for a while.
Whether or not the film is any good, I can't stop being curious about it. Now, so much time has passed that I can't be sure about anything I remember about it. Was the somewhat feline monster guy named Leo in the description, or I am just confusing myself with other adaptations? Was there really a Scottish or British island, or not? I know this isn't a lot to go off of since I barely remember the description, can't be sure of the cover (woman and beast guy maybe?), and watched so little. The name might be something like Beast but I really don't know anymore. What made it intriguing to me back then? I can't be sure anymore.
EDIT: Added dates to the movies I mentioned to make it clearer which ones I know aren't right. Also, I think the film was a romance, sort of dark and forbidden though the "monster" guy was mostly human. I feel like the cover had to have indicated some sort of slightly fantastical element for me to be so interested at that age, but I can't be sure. I might just be thinking of Ron Perlman's face in the TV show. I will edit when movies are suggested that I didn't add to the list of "not its." Thank you to anyone who comments their suggestions!!!

2023.11.11 04:56 AutumnCupcake Looking for late 20s influencer reccos

Hi! So I am 28, and up until I got married at 25, I really enjoyed watching influencer hauls, tutorials, etc. I think getting married in 2020 and watching TV together + COVID furlough made me consume this type of content less, and now I’m out of the loop. But I used to love watching influencers, particularly vlogmas, and getting outfit and makeup tips. I grew up on the 2010-2012 influencers like aspen, livinlikelindsey, Zoe sugg, Tanya burr, etc.
As silly as it sounds, I liked watching vlogs and living vicariously through these people and getting to know them through a screen. So now I feel just out of the loop and am looking for recommendations on new influencers to follow, within reason, because I’m not looking to spend a ton of money on viral products, rather have someone who I relate to who keeps me current.
Content I like and relate to includes: late 20s, more natural makeup, pale skin, oily skin, simple/basic/classic fashion, gym and fitness, corporate workers
Tldr: looking for late 20s/early 30s gurus to follow

2023.10.28 14:25 ExoticMandibles Arlene Martel's Third Columbo Credit

Arlene Martel was a working Hollywood character actor for decades. She's probably most famous as Spock's Vulcan bride T'Pring from the original series episode "Amok Time". And although she appears in two Columbo episodes... she's actually credited for three!
Arlene was very attractive, and had a sort of undefinable ethnic look, letting her play women of many different races over her career. We saw her on Columbo as Gloria West in "The Greenhouse Jungle", where she was the murdered man's dimwitted platonic girl friend. In "A Friend In Deed" she played a sales person at the jewelry store; Columbo asks her about a watch band.
However! She has a third credit on "Double Exposure". That's the episode with Robert Culp as murderer Dr. Bart Kepple, the motivational researcher and subliminal message expert. What's interesting is, Arlene doesn't appear in the episode!
Part of the story of the episode is that Dr. Kepple was blackmailing Vic Norris using some compromising photos. Vic says--
"How many of your other clients have you framed with Tanya? It wouldn't surprise me a bit [if] this whole institution was built on her remarkable body!"
Later in the episode Columbo tells Bart about calling Tanya Baker on the phone, but we the audience don't actually hear the phone call.
So, in this episode, we never see or hear Arlene, yet she still gets a credit. Why? According to IMDb she played Tanya Baker. I don't know what proof IMDb has for that, but I believe it. I suspect the original script called for at least one scene where we see Tanya Baker--maybe the phone call, maybe something else--and they hired Arlene to play her. But for whatever reason all her scenes were cut. Maybe that happened in the edit room, or maybe she was never even filmed. "Shooting Columbo" says her scenes were removed "so late" that she still got a screen credit; I'm guessing union rules required it. I bet those rules also ensured Arlene still got paid!
Sadly, the number of people who could fill in the details here are dwindling. Director Richard Quine died in 1989, writer Stephen J. Cannell died in 2010, Arlene herself passed away in 2014, and of course Peter Falk, Levenson, and Link are all long gone. Maybe one of the Columbo researchers like David Koenig ("Shooting Columbo") or Mark Dawidziak ("The Columbo Phile") knows.

2023.09.29 14:03 ThrowAway7s2 Thoughts relating to County Supervisor Bob Bultman's prediction of Door County's future

Bob Bultman touched on an interesting anticipation in his 2021 panel remarks:
He said that as long as there are people, they will come to Door County, and that the county is turning into the suburbs of Green Bay — and he doesn't see that going any other way.
https://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/story/news/local/door-co/2021/06/15/door-county-environmental-council-hosts-panel-tourism-impacts/7504737002/
Bultman was in favor of establishing a carrying capacity for Door County tourism, which makes sense if the county must turn into suburbs eventually. If suburbanization is destiny, than anything opposing it must fail no matter what. Rather, the prudent option is to pave the way for suburbanization.
Most people’s understanding of what constitutes a suburb in Wisconsin would include, among other things, a non-Hispanic White-dominated community. There could be some minorities, but not as many as in a larger urban situation.
It would be easier to sidestep the race aspect, but it is worth addressing since it was was raised against Door County in an unpleasant manner. Following are some of the Washington post comments in June, which addressed the question of affordable housing in Door County:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/interactive/2023/door-county-bellwether-politics/
Josette A. Maderna:
There is the crux of it. Dipping below 93 percent would be a terrifying demographic change. They rather turn their city into a ghost town.
TRock5000:
If the immigrants were white people from Sweden, there would be no objections to anything. This all boils down to race and nothing more.
Active dry yeast:
I live in Rockford, IL. Door County is literally the Cape Cod of the Midwest. It’s a small wonder why immigrants weren’t flown to Door County along with Martha’s Vineyard to find work.Door County is a haven for the well heeled, white, upper middle class who have the money to spend on sturgeon eggs, expensive cheeses and pricey restaurants. It is no haven for anyone looking to eek out an existence as a day laborer.Door County is a tourist Mecca of the Midwest and people wander there to see and be seen by other White people. This place is beyond Nordic with a undercurrent of racism that belongs to anyone that can afford to live and play there. The last thing they want is affordable housing. That would go against the grain.
jzms36:
In the third paragraph they mention the hispanic population has gone up 70% and some residents are concerned about the increase. Then a few paragraphs down you read the Hispanic population is about 4% and the white population is over 90%. This county is not into diversity it seems.
These lead me to think of some of the fears which I infer have been been present in Door County:
This relates to the vulnerability of expecting retiree in-migration to make up for lack of retaining children into adulthood. Retiree in-migration in recent years is inherently more brittle and less dependable than the alternative of Hispanic in-migration. Yearly cohorts of Generation X are smaller than the Baby Boom due to fewer of them being born, while in recent years more Latinos have been immigrating to the United States.
Retirees coming to Door County typically don’t raise children; maybe grandchildren under less than ideal circumstances. Meanwhile many Hispanic immigrants do. Even if no new Hispanics were to immigrate into Door County, those already settled in would continue to expand the Hispanic demographic naturally as they have children at a rate higher than the replacement rate. Door County is 3.9% Hispanic or Latino in the most recent estimate: https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/doorcountywisconsin,US/PST045222
Even with legalized abortion, the total fertility rate of all Hispanic women in Door County, from 1990 to 2020, was 2.54 lifetime children per woman, compared to the total fertility rate of 1.61 children for all non-Hispanic women of all races, and also women where a record of her race was missing. These figures are calculated from Wisconsin Interactive Statistics on Health statistics from the Wisconsin Department of Health website.
With the replacement total fertility rate being 2.1 children per woman over a lifetime, the difference between these two figures means that, were conditions to remain the same, over the next generation the Hispanic community, without consideration for immigration, average age, or life expectancy, should be expected to naturally be 21% larger than the last, while the next generation of all non-Hispanics combined will naturally be 23% smaller.
In other state health website figures, a trend shows up in population figures for ages 14 and younger. The percentage of Hispanic youths in Door County increased eight-fold from 1990 to 2020, and the increase shows no sign of letting up. At the rate of increase from the most recent years available, the 14 and younger segment of Door County will be majority Hispanic just after the next century begins. From this, it seems the destiny of Door County is not to be a suburb as they are usually thought of presently. Countering Bob Bultman, why should Door County not be expected to turn into a barrio?
It follows from this that political and business decisions should be made with this in mind. Racial and demographic transitions can be made easier or harder depending on the circumstances. Instead of trying to prepare a future which pleases non-Hispanic White suburbanites from nearby metro areas, another option would be to could figure out what Latinos want when looking for a place to raise families, and then work to accommodate that. Probably many non-Hispanic families of all races want similar things, or would benefit from them anyway. It is better to work on this now rather than neglecting it and waiting until tensions arise.
Why don’t Hispanic immigrants abort their children at parity with non-Hispanic Whites? An article explaining the situation was written for the Catholic Herald in 2019 by C. C. Pecknold, “Why Hispanic immigrants are so pro-life”: https://catholicherald.co.uk/why-hispanic-immigrants-are-so-pro-life/
The article explains that Hispanic immigrants are pro-life because they are more likely to trust their families rather than the broader society, or people who claim to wear its mantle. Recent immigrants many understand from experience under which circumstances, society is worthless or deceptive, and best disregarded.
This reminds me of how one of the movies shown to cherry season migrants decades ago was “The Prodigal”. The showing was put on by local Christians who volunteered to provide entertainment. They must have picked it because it was a relatively recent Biblical film, based on the parable of the prodigal son from Luke 15.
Reportedly, migrants loved this movie, although it had been a box-office failure and was not favored by critics. I found a clip of it on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rh7OBysEDX8
Following the link to YouTube, the first comment is in Spanish, asking that it be dubbed with Spanish subtitles and released to a Latin American audience.
It is understandable why migrants would enjoy it. It is an escapist journey into the Roman era, a reminder that Roman (Latin) culture was really grand. Besides that, the human sacrifice scene in this clip seems inspired by past Latin American civilizations.
The protagonist, Micah, was played by Edmund Purdom, who went on to divorce three women, dying at 84 of a heart attack in Rome. Micah is a migrant, and the female lead character is a reminder against getting ensnared. It reinforces the absolute necessity of keeping your head, bucking the trend, and defying the lies bought in by the broader culture.
In light of this cultural retention, the September 20, 2023 Door County Pulse article promoting abortion, https://doorcountypulse.com/abortion-care-restored-in-wisconsin/, should not be expected to result in Hispanic immigrants killing off their next generation in order to please Door County’s suburbanizing elements.
This article is presented as a news piece rather than an editorial or opinion piece, and it has some serious problems which are worth mentioning. The phrase “reverted to an 1849 law” omits any mention that Wisconsin’s abortion law was revised multiple times before Roe v. Wade, most recently in 1955. Pro-abortion people deliberately omit this in order to try and discredit Wisconsin’s abortion law. A good description of the changes made in 1955 are at https://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/misc/lrb/lrb_reports/history_of_abortion_laws_6_4.pdf#page=8, also the next two pages.
The news piece also includes a quote from Tanya Atkinson, but not an opposing quote from the pro-life side. Quoting from the opposing side could have informed the reading audience that a separate provision already criminalized feticide, and with a more severe penalty than for abortion. The implications of this are discussed at https://www.maciverinstitute.com/2023/09/justice-is-the-whim-of-a-judge/.
PPWI asked “other stakeholders” before going ahead and openly violating the law, but they didn’t ask the baby. Unborn babies have been documented on ultrasound attempting to resist the instruments used to kill them.
Door County, according to state health department forms, suffered 190 induced abortions from 2010 to 2021. This averages out to nearly sixteen killed per year. If Hispanic immigrants assimilate to the host culture, more Hispanic babies will die from abortion. Already, Latino babies are more likely to be aborted than White babies, and a 2022 survey found evidence of assimilation over multiple generations of Latino immigrants: https://www.axios.com/2022/06/28/abortion-views-latinos-supreme-court-roe-poll
But could the opposite sort of influence happen, with Americans becoming more like Hispanic immigrants?
A very recent poll shows that Hispanics desire to have more children than non-Hispanic whites: https://news.gallup.com/poll/511238/americans-preference-larger-families-highest-1971.aspx.
The breakdowns in the Gallup poll show that Hispanics, Catholics, people who attend religious services more often, and people with incomes less than $40,000 a year are all more likely to want larger family sizes. The poll also found that Americans today prefer a larger family size to a greater degree than has been seen since 1971. That could fit with Hispanic immigrants leading the trend.
That could be surprising, but maybe less so remembering that in 1963, Keta Steebs admired several migrant families she had the privilege of profiling: https://doorcounty.substack.com/p/population-explosion-means-picking. People influence others all the time, even just by setting an example, and why should Hispanic immigrants be incapable of influencing?
From 2010 to 2021, Latinas in Door County had 131 babies. Considering that roughly half were undocumented immigrants, this could set an example to follow in handling difficult situations. No matter what the problems are, elective abortion does not need to be the answer.
One thing that is nice to reflect on is that when “forever” type rhetoric is used to describe efforts to protect and preserve Door County, what is really meant is keeping it nice so it will be ready when there are more around to enjoy it. This helps to refute the claim against Jens Jenson that he supposedly favored native plants because of racism. Rather, those who follow in Jenson’s footsteps and participate in community projects to remove non-native invasives, are preserving something so that someday the descendants especially of those who today tend to be pro-life will get to enjoy it.

2023.08.10 10:14 coffebl19 Unidentified woman found buried in a wall last December has been identified as Tanya Lee Glover. QLD police believe the woman has been deceased for the last decade. The investigation is still ongoing as Tanya was not reported missing.

In December 2022, the cleaners found remains tightly wrapped and buried in a besser block wall in garage of apartments in Aderley social housing complex in Queensland.
This led to months of investigating
Thursday 10th August identify announced
Queensland police confirmed the remains belongs to Tanya lee Glover who would be 38 when she passed away. Police allege Ms Glover’s body was disposed of between 2009 and 2010.
Ms Glover’s identity was discovered through a lengthy investigation involving the Australia Federal Police’s national DNA program using a familial DNA program.
Superintendent Massingham told reporters in December the remains were found in a locked area behind a besser block wall and said it was “quite concerning” that the body had gone unnoticed.
The autopsy has revealed some trauma to the body and as a result we are treating this as suspicious.
He said the body was “very tightly wrapped” and covered in clothing and bedding. Ms Glover’s parents were alerted by police of her death. Superintendent Massingham said the woman’s parents didn’t realise their daughter was missing, having thought she was somewhere else in the country.
Initial inquiries indicate she moved to Queensland from NSW in 2006 and resided in the Fortitude Valley area until 2010. Glover was unemployed, kept to herself and led a very quiet and subdued lifestyle.
Ms Glover is described as caucasian in appearance, between 155cm and 165cm tall, and she had dark brown hair.
She was not formally known to Queensland Police, and no missing person reports had been made concerning her.

Markus Larsson is a music journalist for Sweden's biggest newspaper Aftonbladet. 10. The Everly Brothers - Down In the Willow Garden (1958)
The Every Brothers almost feel underrated in the country world. The brothers were so much more than Bye Bye Love and Wake Up Little Susie. The albums they released on the RCA label between 1966 and 1972 had everything except for commercial success. Almost everything ends up clouded by the increasingly burnt out and desperate brothers singing their hearts out and putting their country and soul, hospel and honkuy tonk, hillbilly and jingle handle, the deepest country ballads and the country rock on a much darker level. It wasn't until obsessed German record collectors at the Bear Family company collected recordings in the Chain To a Memory CD box that the Everly Brothers' forgotten years got any semblance of retribution. A hint of what was to come was already there, in their version of the song Down in the Willow Garden. It's an awful and graphic murder ballad. The lyrics get even grimmer by the brothers' unreal harmonies. It's as if two angels were crying over Rose Connolly.
9. Willie Nelson - Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain (1975)
In the essay book The Philosophy of Modern Song, Bob Dylan writes that Willie Nelson can sing from a phonebook and still make you cry. Dylan notes that Nelson would travel around selling bibles before having his breakthrough. If the person Willie is as magnetic and authentic as his voice he must have sold half the bibles in the entire United States. And if all American music was gathered in a song book Willie Nelson's voice would be the spine, the glue and the preamble. There's a reason why Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain has become a saying, a sort of subtext for sad country music ballads. The song's narrator has reached the end of the rope. When the author and drummer from Sugarplum Fairy, Kristian Gidlund, visited Jill's Veranda [Swedish TV show featuring country singer Jill Johnson] he knew that he was dying of cancer. He also knew that the show was a sort of public farewell. He chose to sing Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain.
8. Tammy Wynette - Stand By Your Man (1968)
Stand By Your Man has been accused of being reactionary and anti-feminist. Hillary Clinton is one of the song's many critics. But are you supposed to interpret the lyrics literally, or are there more complex nuances in how Tammy Wynette performs the song? She sounds neither submissive nor passive, rather exhausted and sad, sometimes almost sarcastic. She was after all in a relationship with George Jones. Or as the key phrase of the song says: "After all, he's just a man." Regardless, there are choruses and then there's the chorus in Stand By Your Man. All of country history fits into that one.
7. George Jones - The Grand Tour (1974)
Enter at your own risk. The Grand Tour could be the most bitter and saddest thing that George Jones has recorded. In other words it's one of the most bitter and saddest country songs that have ever been created. With total self-annihilation she takes the listened on a tour of a house that he once called home sweet home. The poison is setting in for every piece of furniture he passes. Everything brings back memories of what disappeared after the divorce, everything builds towards a horrific climax. She left everything but the kid and his heart. "Step right up, come on in..."
6. Sammi Smith - Saunders Ferry Lane (1970)
In his book Cinema Speculation the director Quentin Tarantino explains the difference between movie stars and actors using the example of Steve McQueen. McQueen doesn't play a role, he is. Tarantino could have written something similar about the difference between singers and country stars, although using Sammi Smith as an example. She is. When she sings a song, almost any song, she takes posession of it from the inside out. Sammi Smith was one of few women who received acclaim with the outlaws of the 70's. Nobody has sounded tougher and more despondent than she does in Saunders Ferry Lane.
5. Merle Haggard and The Strangers - Sing Me Back Home (1967)
There is an old joke about how an album by "Hag" must contain at least three songs about prisons, otherwise it's not Merle Haggard. It's pretty funny since it's true. The former jailbird spent three years at San Quentin in California for a failed robbery. Sing Me Back Home is inspired by two prisoners he got to know in the joint. One was sentenced for kidnapping and the other for murder. Both were executed. The intro sets the stage. The music reminds you of a church bell. The hour has come. A death row inmate is being led through the corridor one last time. Just as everyone else the song's narrator stands up to watch. The prisoner has one last wish. He wants his old guitar playing friend to sing one last song so that he can remember his old life before everything went wrong. Sing me back home before I die. Merle Haggard does Sing Me Back Home with a ruthless authority. A constant candidate for the ultimate country song.
4. Phil Everly - Words In Your Eyes (1975)
Her eyes tell everything that she can't bring herself to say. It's over. She is on her way out. Words In Your Eyes is a silent storm, or maybe even more of a quiet and muffled scream. He pleads to her. Please, talk to me. Don't let us drift apart. The music is so mellow that you could whisper louder than the instruments play. The words that Phil Everly sing don't need a loudspeaker. Without the support of his brother Don the words become frighteningly brittle and forlorn. Everyone who has been there knows that it's all to no avail. She has already made up her mind. When the song ends she's gone.
3. Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues (1955)
"Hello, I'm Johnny Cash." Cash always presented himself in the same way when he kicked off his concerts with Folsom Prison Blues. As if anyone wondered what his name was. Johnny Cash recorded the song together with bass player Marshall Grant and guitarist Luther Perkinds. It sounds like a careening train. The trio plays so rough and tight that you don't even think about the recording not containing any drums. Some artists need to record 88 albums in 40 years to become larger than life. Johnny Cash needed a single line of text to become bigger than country. It might still be the hardest thing to ever be written: "But I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die."
2. Dolly Parton - Jolene (1973)
Which artist has achieved the most in the least amount of time? It might be Dolly Parton. She wrote both I Will Always Love You and Jonese within the span of a few days, and not on the same day as legend has it. But how many others have managed to change a genre twice in a week? Nobody has represented the more sympathetic, inclusive and rainbow colored side of country music more than Dolly Parton. She wrote her signature melodifes after saying goodbye to her mentor Porter Wagoner. The interesting thing is the song's different temperaments. I Will Always Love You is forgiving and loving. The ballad is a letter that could be sent both to a friend and an ex lover. Jolene is the other side of the relationship, the fear, spite and jealousy. Jolene is one of music history's most iconic antagonists. You don't even need to like country to know, fear or dream about the flaming locks of auburn hair.
1. Mickey Newbury - The Future's Not What It Used To Be (1971)
Mickey Newbury never fit in. The fac that he disappeared in the periphery is understandable. The music didn't belong anywhere. It was too soft and introverted to be rock. Too excentric for the country crowds. It was definitely too sophisticated and dark to be pop. It wasn't soul, hippie, psychadelic, bandada, honko tonk or folk enough either. Michey Newbury refused to be specific. What radio station would play his songs?
When he released his best album in the 70's he should have fit in with the uprising against Nashville. But he thought the outlaw scene was childish. On the other hand he became a role model and mentor for many of the movement's most revered names. Mickey Newbury got Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark to move to Nashville. Waylon Jenning was a bright eyed admiror. Kris Kristofferson said that nobody had taught his more about writing songs than Mickey. Elvis Presley's cover of An American Trilogy is the most well known and commercially successful version of Mickey Newbury's songs. But it's nothing compared to his own original.
On the albums Feels Like Rain, Frisco Mabel Joy and Heaven Help the Child Newbury makes music that cannot be placed on any other stage or location in the world than his own head. He had fought depression his entire life. But instead of sitting down with a bottle in one hand and a gun against his temple he wrote songs. It's hard to listen to Mickey Newbury. The melancholy is so deep it feels dangerous. The beauty is threatening. The songs belong way beyond "the dark end of the street."
This is especially true in The Future's Not What It Used To Be. It's the best country song of all time. It's at least impossible to listen to anything afterwards. Everything feels empty and futile until you, against your better judgement, turn it on again.
The song slows down towards the end, right as Newbury hears that she's back in town. The music goes slowed and slowed as he sings:
"I know her sorrow, I know her pain, I know her need / And I once loved her a lot, but the future is just not, not what it used to be"
It's the sound of a heart ceasing to beat.

2023.07.13 13:13 CatchLISK Is LISK a Bisexual Sadist Serial Killer?

Is LISK a bisexual sadist serial killer; grooming, attacking and murdering both men and women and why do few people really want to consider this?A reasonable case for this can be made with just allowing one’s perspective to see all of the overarching evidence and challenge law enforcement’s one dimensional, myopic and hastily put together narrative. As stated repeatedly, SCPD believes “Asian Male” to be an outlier, a surprise to LISK, who being all heterosexual, beat this person to death in a fit of rage. On the surface, this is a plausible assessment; that is, if there weren't any other males found in proximity (location and time), to female victims, or found in some sort of female clothing. How does that align when SCPD also has a keen eye on Andre Jamal “Sugar Bear'' Issac, going so far as to incorporate a link to the Gilgo News website, and “owning” the case, despite their torso being found in Arverne, in a female bodysuit and skirt? The link, or links?
As my research progressed, using my map, it became rather obvious to me that there was something more going on than the narrative suggests. The list of male victims I’ve compiled are not conclusive and there could very well be any number of reasons and tons of other POI’s, but if “Asian Male” and Sugar Bear and the Manorville Males are in LISK’s orbit, then so too are the men I will introduce below.SCPD, subsequently and consistently has denied any link between the three murdered males found in Manorville, 2000, 2003 and 2012, despite being in relative proximity to Jessica Taylor and Valerie Mack (who were also found along Ocean Parkway in the Gilgo Beach area). But, is this accurate? Not by a long shot…..here is why…What if LISK selected both women and men, to moderately groom and ultimately murder? Before I get to that, I wanted to do a cursory look at Sexual Serial Killers in general. Many SK’s are compulsion killers- driven towards certain criteria and/or opportunities, but predominantly, sexually driven:
There are precedents of bisexual serial killers:
Serial killers have many overlapping traits, which seem like MO’s to the average person, but this is actually not the case. Each known serial killer is wholly unique and while there are some similarities, it is foolish to try to relegate any one of them into a box of characteristics and call it expertise, or “definitive”.LISK clearly has a female “preference”. Petite, 5’-5’5”, 100 -110 lbs., hazel/green eyes. The “attributed” LISK Victims all share these characteristics. (Side note: less than 5% of the world’s population has hazel eyes, in the US, it’s closer to 18%). The narrative here is that it was easier to “control” smaller, lighter women, but not necessarily the case. Eye color preference is a derivative of paraphilia and may represent for LISK, a catalyst, rooted in his childhood or early developmental experiences or fantasies. With the males we see a different trend, notably because males tend to be larger overall. But the methods of their deaths have some consistency. For now, I will focus on just the time frame of 1990-2016. I will add background where relevant. To be fair, some of the criteria I used is lacking depth and is tenuous, however, for example, at that time, it was well known that a male wearing one earring is representing themselves as gay in many circles, whereas nowadays, it is not.
Also notable:
Here is a more detailed timeline that incorporates both attributed and assumed victims:
Connectivity Avenues:It appears that victims who worked the streets were dismembered, compared to escorts who advertised online, (assuming the same for FIJD, Peaches).
I will add source links separately.

2023.06.18 21:36 SheWhoLovesToDraw Help Bring the Skelton Brothers Home

Already posed to RBI and was encouraged to share this story here.
This is a horrendous crime and mystery that's haunted my small farm town for the past 13 years with little to no progress being made since the initial disappearance. Three boys, all brothers, seemingly vanished on November 25th, 2010, after spending Thanksgiving with their father John Skelton. Their father has claimed that the boys have been "given" to a group (potentially Amish) to "keep them safe" while in the midst of a nasty divorce with his now ex-wife and mother to the three boys, Tanya Zuvers, accusing Tanya of abusing the boys despite her repeatedly denying such allegations.
The boys, Andrew (9), Alexander (7) and Tanner (5) were last seen with their father on Thanksgiving on 11/25/10 and were to be returned to their mother the next day on 11/26/10 but they never arrived.
The father has refused to cooperate with the authorities and confirm where the three boys are or who supposedly has them. He is currently incarcerated for unlawful imprisonment and could be paroled later this year.
It's time that this mystery is solved and that this broken family can find closure and the community can heal at long last. If the boys are still alive and well, then that's the best outcome anyone could hope for. If they are in fact gone, then giving their family closure and allowing them to finally move on will have to be a worthy consolation prize.
I've included several news links that give more information on the case as well as photos of the boys when they were their respective ages upon disappearance as well as their digitally aged photos that could represent how they might look today. At the time the boys were age 9, 7, and 5, meaning after 13 years they'd be 22, 20 and 18 by today's date.

2023.06.12 10:24 GregoryGregory666666 How many here are into older country?

By older I typically mean 70's and 80's? I was a kid of the late 50's and into the 60's. But I came to really appreciate country in the 70's due to the music my mom listened to. From the Statler Brothers to the Oak Ridge Boys to singers such as G. Jones, Conway, C. Rich and Pride along with Tanya Tucker and so many others well into the 80's. There are plenty I listen to from the 90's and up to 2000 and even a few up to 2010 give or take. But for the most part I find country today to be mostly a pop version or even rock. The song "Murder on Music Row" by Strait and A. Jackson sums it up well for me. The new country seems to have pushed these older songs well back and something few ever listen to any longer. Anyone else still into the so called "older" songs?

75-hour Charity Marathon, Featuring MyM with a Dev!
Hi folks! My name is Tanya and I'm the president of Sandbox Gaming, a volunteer non-profit organization in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada that raises money for children's charities that promote play and development! We do this primarily through our biannual 75-hour charity marathons, and our 25th marathon (we've been around since 2010 haha) starts today at 3:30pm Eastern, which brings me to the point of my post!
Our 2nd game in our charity marathon will be Meet Your Maker, during which we'll be raiding co-op with a great friend, past Sandbox Gaming board member, and current MyM dev Kate! We'll be starting MyM at about 5pm - 9pm Eastern, doing a 30-minute building challenge about an hour in, and then continuing with co-op raids for the remainder. The best part is, our main donation incentive for MyM will be just $10 Cdn to raid your bases! (Just remember to set your bases to Social)
All proceeds will be going towards Easter Seals NL, the Camp Eclipse program for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth by Planned Parenthood NL, and the St. John's R.E.A.L. program, so I really hope you come join us! You can find our stream at https://www.twitch.tv/sandboxgamingnl, learn more about us and what we do at https://www.sandboxgaming.org/, and follow us on FB, Twitter, and Insta @sandboxgamingnl !
Hope to see you there! Me and Kate are very excited to see what you have in store for us <3
