2024.06.02 09:29 FlashOnImpulse Discomfort in lower right abdomen?

Hi I recently had an ultrasound done due to concerns about my right abdomen and they found a 1.9cm lesion in my liver. It otherwise looks fine and healthy. This feeling in my abdomen is the same feeling I get in my left side when I am constipated. But after passing gas or doing to the toilet my left is fine. The right however has been constant feeling like there’s something there. For context I am a 27M and have been underweight since my high school years. I’ve looked up the symptoms for liver disease and I can check the marks for tiredness and weight lost. However, I have recently transferred to a night shift schedule so that might be the reason? I am a yard jockey and am driving 10 hours a day. I’ve slept 21 hours max on my day off with 16 hours being the most recent. I do do a lot of overtime though and my sleep is on and off. As for the weight loss, I think it’s just cause I haven’t been eating as much as I did compared to day shift cause I’m just so tired when I come home. I do have an appetite and I do feel hungry at work. My pee color is fine. I did a blood and urine test and the results are normal. Aside from the lesion, is there any other explanation for this constant feeling like there’s something in my lower right abdomen, just underneath my rib cage? I jam my finger into it and it feels somewhat sore but also comforting. Ps I’m still constipated. Apparently they couldn’t get a good image of my pancreas due to gas. My stool isn’t hard or wet, but sticky or mushy.

2024.06.02 09:11 anax44 Interesting Coffee Varieties from the Caribbean

The variety of Arabica first transported out of the highlands of Ethiopia into the rest of the tropical world is known as Typica Coffee. A variety of Typica sent to Reunion mutated into a new type of Arabica called Bourbon Coffee. In more recent times, there have been more mutations of Typica and Arabica as well as multiple hybrids between the two resulting in many different varieties of Arabica Coffee.
There are two accounts of coffee coming to the Caribbean. The first, is of the Dutch transporting it to Suriname in 1713. A more popular tale is the story of a French Naval Officer who smuggled a coffee seedling out of Amsterdam, transported it across the Atlantic, and planted it in Martinique. From these introductions, coffee quickly spread across the Caribbean and Latin America leading to a variety of regional styles.
A regional style is generally the result of the varieties planted, terroir of the region, and traditions associated with processing the coffee beans. All across the Caribbean, there are several interesting and unique varieties of coffee.
Costa Rica:
Tarrazú Coffee & Villa Sarachi
Following their independence from Spain in 1821, the government of Costa Rica immediately took steps to develop the coffee industry. This included giving away seedlings, allowing farmers to take ownership of arable land, exempting coffee from certain taxes, and introducing the wash process. All of these developments happened in less than ten years after Independence. The strong government support for the coffee industry has resulted in consistently high quality coffee beans, and a healthy economy heavily influenced by this crop. The status of Costa Rica as the safest country in Central America also helps with coffee tourism and international investment.
In recent years, farmers have purchased their own processing equipment, making it possible to easily find small batches of coffee from single farms. Honey processing is also particularly popular in Costa Rica, and it’s done both to differentiate the coffee, and to save water. The highest grown coffee in the country is from a region called Tarrazú, and the volcanic soil and unique microclimate of this area is often cited as contributors to the superior quality of Tarrazú Coffee. In the past, many producers would write Tarrazú Coffee on labels to benefit from the name association, but recently the government of Costa Rica has developed a geographical indication for Tarrazú Coffee. The types of coffee commonly grown are Cattura, which is a mutation of Bourbon, and Catuai, which is a hybrid between Cattura and another Bourbon mutation.
A varietal associated with Costa Rica but also grown elsewhere is Villa Sarachi, a dwarf mutation of Bourbon that is tolerant of strong winds that is named for the Costa Rican town where it was discovered in 1950.
Dominican Republic:
Valdesia Coffee & Sierra Cafetalera Coffee
Dominicans drink more coffee than anyone else in the insular Caribbean. Due to this, coffee production in the country remains stable, but exports continue to decline with each passing decade. Generally speaking, the varietals planted are Typica and Caturra that are both grown organically on hillsides. This leads to Dominican coffee being good, but nothing exceptional.
Of some note is the coffee grown on the Cordillera Central, also known as the Dominican Alps. It’s the highest grown coffee in the country, and it benefits from the unique rocky soil of the mountains. Some coffee from regions in the southern part of the country have also attracted attention. This includes Valdesia Coffee, which is protected by a Geographical Indication and sold at a premium compared to generic Dominican coffee. Additionally, coffee grown by a collection of small farmers in the Sierra de Neiba range and processed traditionally has been included in the Ark of Taste as Sierra Cafetalera Coffee.
Honduras:
Café de Marcala & Camapara Mountain Coffee
Honduras is the third largest coffee producer in the Americas. They produce more than Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Panama combined, but still far less than Colombia or Brazil. Bourbon and Caturra are commonly grown varietals, although in the Montecillos region a type known as Pacas is cultivated. This is a mutation of Bourbon discovered in neighboring El Salvador about seventy years ago. This region is also where coffee is grown at the highest altitude, and it is protected by the Geographical Indications Honduras Western Coffee, and Café de Marcala. Coffee grown near the border with Guatemala and El Salvador has attracted some international attention, and is recognized by Slow Food as Camapara Mountain Coffee.
Panama:
Panama Geisha/Gesha
Panama is a relatively small coffee producer where many of the same varietals planted elsewhere in Central America are also planted. What the country stands out for however, is their Geisha Coffee that has managed to constantly fetch high prices and consistently win awards for the last two decades.
Geisha or Gesha Coffee was first discovered growing in the wild on the slopes of the Gori Gesha Mountains in Central Ethiopia in the 1930s. Since then, it has been introduced to coffee growing regions all across the world. While Geisha Coffee from Colombia and Costa Rica are both highly regarded, it is Panama Geisha that has become the most famous. Many coffee enthusiasts find Blue Mountain, Kona, and Kopi Luwak to be overhyped, but the floral and fruity notes of Panama Geisha makes it worth the high prices. There is no protection of the name, or geographical indication for Panama Geisha Coffee, so lower quality examples are starting to emerge.
Jamaica:
Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee & High Mountain Coffee
In 1950 the Jamaican Coffee Board was founded, and their activity is almost entirely focused on promoting mountain grown coffee from Jamaica’s four most eastern parishes. This coffee is cultivated on the slopes of the Blue Mountains, which are the highest peaks on the island and part of a World Heritage Site. The majority of this coffee is a varietal of Typica known as Blue Mountain Coffee, but small amounts of Geisha are also grown. The coffee is graded according to the height of the slopes on which it is grown, so there is Jamaica Low Mountain Coffee grown at less than 460 meters, and Jamaica High Mountain Coffee grown over that height, but below 910 meters. Only coffee grown over 910 meters however, can legally be sold as Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee. Coffee enthusiasts find Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee to be very good, but no longer worth the high prices due to the growing availability of small batch specialty coffee from other regions.
Nicaragua:
Starmaya Coffee
Despite decades of political instability, the coffee industry in Nicaragua has managed to thrive. There are three coffee growing regions where farmers mostly plant Caturra and Bourbon, and all three are known for producing quality coffee. In the continuous quest for developing high quality coffee varieties with disease resistance, the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development developed a variety in Nicaragua known as Starmaya that was made by crossing several Arabica varieties with a wild coffea species from Ethiopia. Starmaya shows a lot of promise in helping the coffee industry deal with growing threats like disease and climate change.
Guyana:
Pomeroon Coffee
Guyana lacks the climate conditions necessary for quality coffee to thrive, but it is home to something entirely unique; Pomeroon Coffee. Named for the region where it is grown, this is not a varietal of Arabica or Robusta. Rather, this is a species known as Coffea Liberica that makes up less than one percent of commercially grown coffee. Most of this Liberica Coffee is grown and consumed locally in the Philippines where it is called Kapeng Barako. The Liberica Coffee in Guyana came to the region with the early introduction of Coffee to South America via the Dutch. As Arabica crops failed in the Guianas because of disease and the warm climate, the Liberica managed to survive. Liberica coffee beans are larger than Robusta or Arabica, and shaped slightly differently. As climate change threatens the coffee industry, the potential of this coffee species is being further explored.
Guadeloupe:
Guadeloupe Bonifieur
Guadeloupe was one of the first Caribbean islands where coffee was planted, and it has grown continuously there for almost three hundred years. Production today is very small, but of particular note is Guadeloupe Bonifieur which shares the same lineage as Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee. Additionally, Guadeloupe was the second Caribbean island where coffee was introduced after Martinique, and due to the eruption of Mount Pelée where the majority of coffee on Martinique was cultivated, Guadeloupe is now home to some of the earliest established coffee estates in the New World.

VE.A Bought this VE.A many years ago, got it stripped, and powdercoated in a custom black + gold gloss finish. I never built in it after that unfortunately. It's been sitting on my shelf for ages because my other VE.A does the job. The original PCB was desoldered by the previous owner and required a jump wire soldered to function properly. I am in the middle of re-designing a VE.A PCB that uses USB-C connectors for everything instead, and you would be the first to get that when it's ready. $700

2024.06.02 07:33 Educational-Cost1536 How can we Indians Change the civic sence problem?

Y'll know we got some serious problem. We're a good country with Pretty good economic growth, we grow 8.4% in FY24, it's impressive but it all overshadowed by unhygienic nature of stall, open dumping of wastes in middle of Road with stray animals eating!
We got a pretty huge mountain in delhi, not made with sands/rock/clay/dust but the waste of Delhi people! It's awful to look as well as consumers, the local are in death zone, they are having respiratory Problems etc
It's all over India
You know what sometimes I think what the hell happened to us as a society, I don't think our ancestors will be like this, I think it's a colonial side effects, colonizers made us do this, made us unhygienic/unattractive, and we tend to be like this till now so they can mock us in person/in article/in everything/in everywhere
Why do we need to be clean?
• You'll be far from disease-> it's obvious more unhygienic environment-> less your life
-> You/Your place will be attractive, it'll attract customers/people/business etc
-> We will have a changing/chad/sigma/alpha every good image, now if you turn article you will found hell negative image of India, it affects public perception/social distancing/country tend to less co-operate/ etc.
-> we need to understand in democracy public is everything/if the people of country is in your favou then it'll be necessity for leader of course country to support you in any offence/defence

2024.06.02 07:13 Expazz Pre existing wiring + pucks

Pre existing wiring + pucks
Excuse the shoddy drawing. Using tablet and hotspotting until internet connected.
Recently bought a large property and the house has pre wired Ethernet cables.
One (red in image) goes from kitchen (where router will be) to a bedroom.
An additional cable goes from that bedroom all the way back to an office to the back of the property.
I have six of the older wifi points. I understand they only have one Ethernet port each.
So whilst I could wire one at the router to the bedroom with the "red" cable, I'm not sure what to do to take advantage of the existing blue cable.
I'd prefer these points to all be wired and have the option to put a puck in the garage or anywhere else in the house.
Reason being is the gaming PCs will be in the back office but I'd like to use moonlight via tablet in the house to play PC games streamed to tablet. And also take advantage of the pre existing wired connections.
What would I need to out in that bedroom to connect the red and blue, whilst giving me the option of using the pucks where I want them?

2024.06.02 05:22 sad_panda91 [SF] Do you see what I see? - Of Manifesting an Ice Cream Cone

"Not a single human being on this planet ever saw the universe."
Grand Arbiter Albert XLIII further declared, on their return 37 years after the last broadcast failed in the middle of explaining the secrets of the universe to us.
"What you are seeing is an image of the universe that your brain created to make sense of your surroundings. A mirage, an infinitely imperfect approximation. And there are roughly 8 Billion such approximations on this planet, not even counting non-human entities. We have observed you recently - debating wether the harmonic frequencies of light hitting the rods and cones of your eyes actually generate the same image of color in your brain for all of you equally, and you came to the conclusion that they might not. That everybodies version of "red" or "blue" might be ever so slightly, or completely different. We found it amusing that you aren't drawing the same conclusion to, well, everything else. Through the scientific method and communication accelerators like the Internet, your species managed to align big chunks of those "mirage universes" in your brains, but other areas not touched by the scientific method are left completely unexplored, and therefore to the imagination of the individual. Which lead to many "unfortunate misunderstandings" among you. But make no mistake, even after this global alignment of mirages, the universe inside your mind is still infinitely wrong in the grand scheme of things and unlike any other imagined universe of your peers. Your scientific method suggests the use of calibrated measurement devices that aren't biased by human error to gain knowledge of your surroundings. Which is brilliant, we might add. Your species came up with this kind of technology very early compared to similar lifeforms in other universes. You use these devices to create a "ground truth" from which you reference the rest of your conclusions and predictions. This enabled you to make predictions about the "real universe" you find yourself in, even with this fundamental error underlying your logic system. Either brilliant, or unfathomly lucky. It doesn't really matter. You can pat yourselves on the backs for that.
However, amusingly, you failed to find the crucial detail about the one fundamental, yet completely uncalibrated device at the bottom of everything - your brain - and the sensory organs as extensions of it. No single eye on this planet is the same, no nose, no ears, everything differs ever so slightly. Every brain is folded and twisted differently.
Therefore, what you are observing, and what your scientists are finding models for, is not the real universe. It is the image of this universe your brain creates for you, that makes sense to most of you and that most of your brains are able to understand and find agreement on. Nothing more, nothing less. Especially the intricacies that you are now finding in the infinitissimally small scales and the unfathomly large scales (you curiously still differentiate these two concepts, we observed) are the footprints that the architecture of your brain leaves on these mirage universes. You find numbers everywhere and turn everything into a more and more digital version of nature because the axons that are part of your neurons generate activation signals in a digital, all or nothing kind of way. This part of the brain is what you evolved to use for, among others, your logic systems. Your thinking is in large parts digital, so most of your logic is too. This has gone so far that some of you now think you are actually living in a computer simulation. In some regards, you do, but there is no cosmic entity that generated this simulation and put you in it. You are creating this simulation yourself, in your brain, as a means to maneuver your way around actual physical reality. Imagine having to memorize a picture, but your sensory input systems only allowed you to see one pixel at a time, chosen completely at random, without any reference as to where that pixel is located in the frame. So, you found chunking techniques, the help of your collective hive mind and ideas of particularly eccentric members of your society, to bit by bit close in on a mostly impossible task. But without a paradigm shift on your end, the entirety of the original picture will stay in the shadows of reality.
You created tools like algebra and geometry to circumvent the fact that your logic is mostly digital as a simulacrum of analog information, but for how remarkably useful it is for you to make predictions, it is to what is happening in the real world like what an abacus is to a personal computer. Sure, if you enter '1 + 1', in their own ways, both give you '2'. But one is the tip to the others impossibly large iceberg. It is a sensible abstraction. But it is nowhere close to being an accurate description of what is actually happening or in what ways it useful to you.
We don't want to discourage you by saying this. Your approach, even if it happened out of sheer luck, is brilliant. It really makes the best out of the limitations that you have by your sensory organs and the architecture of your brains. Once a few evolutionary steps later your brain can conceive of more complex logical patterns and images, you will get closer and closer to having an actual copy of the real universe in front of your minds eye. Through the scientific method, you are already optimizing for this. Again, given your species' age, you have developed such a technique incredibly quickly. But what you are doing is finding (very smart) workarounds over a fundamental error you all have in common.
My lifeform, which isn't too unlike yours, just much "older", has taken a different approach in its early stages. Our biggest thinkers found early on that the answers lie within. So for millenia, we focussed our exploration on finding our deepest and truest selves, once we started to move past basic survival instincts, that is. Only after many, many "quantum leaps" in the area of self discovery in the individual and the societal level, we started to artificially accelerate our communication, and overcome physical limitations through technology. It was a slower approach in the beginning, but once we got there, our intellectual growth was exponentially explosive. The time it took us to move from living in basic, mostly local communities that lived off the land - to bending our universe to our wills - was about the time between you writing your currently most popular spiritual fiction and landing on your planets moon for the first time. Note the actual durations might differ greatly, as the concept you call time is very different in our universe and we still haven't fully studied yours.
Anyways. After this event we call "universal reframing", everything else just... fell into place.
Our strategy basically was to, first, fully align our mental universes. And then to perform a depth search from a common starting point. You seemed to have rushed over a few of the crucial bits as soon as the first approach turned out to be useful. Actually, all of the bits but one. It must be a terribly confusing existence that you are living. We can only make an attempt to relate, as our evolutionary strand optimized for alignment before curiousity. That, you could say, was our dumb luck.
Are there any questions so far?"
There was a puzzling silence in an area packed with an amount of people that would normally be present at music festivals or presidential inaugurations. For an event of this magnitude, the stage was sparsely decorated and included only the necessities. Like last time, the visit was spontaneos and unannounced. Or maybe, like last time, we just didn't understand the announcement message, as it might have again came in the form of a formerly undiscovered particle, a seemingly arbitrary number of years prior to this event. They must think they are really funny.
One of the humans chosen as representative of the planet raised their hand.
"Please, speak. As always. Our 'time' is very limited."
"If I didn't misunderstand this: You said, our brains are basically creating what we call 'simulations' for ourselves, in our mind, to make sense of the actual universe we are in and base our actions on. Is this correct?"
"Based on the very crude definition your species has for the word 'correct' I would say 'yes, that is correct.'"
"And these simulations are getting closer and closer to the real deal, right? But what if, say, we didn't want the real deal. What if we liked our own personal pocket universes and instead wanted to bend that one to our own wills instead of the real one? You said we are bad at alignment and I would agree to the point where I say we probably go extinct to our own stupidity before we all agree on even one single thing. Can't we just use your knowledge to just, manifest things into our universe just by thinking about it, like in the movie Matrix, which might have crossed your desk while researching us. Great Movie."
"It did indeed. It is esteemed by my lifeform as what you would call 'slapstick comedy'. Since we moved past what constituted our form of entertainment, the media from your universe has become very popular among my peers. It is by sending samples back to our universe how we finance the probes we are sending here."
"You still have money?"
"I was making - what you call - a joke. Never heard of it in the context of a movie, but that title is immensely funny to me given the circumstances. Anyway, you wanted to know how to bend your 'simulated universe' around you. Alright. You might be slightly dissappointed by the beginning of my explanation, but listen till the end. And make of that what you will.
Let's start by what you mean by 'manifest' exactly. As the inaccuracy of your communication patterns shall not be a hindrance to this mentorship."
"Well... I imagine it. And then it sort of poofs into existence?"
"Understood. Actually, I will start explaning how you perform this action in the actual universe you are in, before I make the transfer to how you do it in the imagined one in your brain."
"Uh.. ok?"
"What would you like to be manifested?"
"I don't know. How about we go nice and easy with a cone of ice cream and start from there?"
"So be it. So, we start imagining the cone of ice cream. What does it consist off? Milk, sugar, eggs, and some smaller additions to suit your individuals taste buds. Let's begin with milk. You are getting it from cows (a practice my society finds quite alienating. We, too, have to get used to the wildly varying customs of lifeforms of the universes). Cows can be domesticated and bred, but first, we would have to overcome the physical distance between us, and a few locations on this planet. For that, I would advice designing and constructing a vehicle that is capa..."
"Oh come on, that's how we manifest things? We go and make them ourselves?? Oh wow, thanks a lot mister transcendant being. So the rest of the stuff you told us was also bullshit?"
"Please refrain from jumping to conclusions without the full picture in mind, even if it is in your existences nature to do so. Alright, so let me offer you a shortcut."
"Please do."
"I know of a location just a few human paces down this road, where you can exchange currency for a cone of ice cream."
"Seriously?"
"Yes."
"What the hell is the point of this?"
"The point is, once again: you - misunderstanding your existence. Especially in conjunction with your incredibly limited ability to verbalize concepts using your own vocabulary. You are barely at the point of being able to convey emotions in every day speech, and are now expecting to understand high level 4 dimensional concepts after just a few of your incredibly inaccurate words. Tell me now, please: What do you perceive as the difference of these two scenarios I just mentioned? In a temporal manner and in the energy required?"
"Well, it would be much easier and faster to just go down the road and buy a cone of ice cream, but that isn't tremendously astounding information to us, you have to understand."
"'Much'? Let's give this word, 'much', a bit of a frame of reference. The differences between these scenarios are: About 15000 years of agriculture and animal husbandry; countless inventions that led to your current state of technology which allows for refrigeration in a way advanced enough to get the ice cream to just the right texture that your modern palate is accustomed to; An education system that allows for such inventions to occur in time for you to be standing here, demanding ice cream, and actually getting it. Not mentioning the infrastructure that makes you bridge the physical distances of every single time any of these steps needed anything. And meanwhile destroying the naturally occuring resources of your planet bit by bit.
Or, scenario 2: You take the money that you got from staring at a computer screen for about 7 minutes, choose one of the ice cream parlors that your civilization made sure to be on average a 30 minutes driving distance from every single living human. (You aren't very good at even distributions though, we found.). And go and get that ice cream. Even including the infrastructural costs existing now, we have narrowed this process down from not even being close to a reality for thousands of generations to being at most 30 minutes away and dirt cheap, assuming an amount of efficient preparation, that is part of the technology that lead you here.
If you ask me, between scenario 1 and 2, you became so many orders of magnitude closer to 'poofing it into existence' that a human mind has troubles comprehending it. And therefore, appreciating it. From '0% of the human population has access to this within their lifetime and no one will for the next couple millenia' to 'Over half the human population has access to this within 30 minutes", taking into account the total timespan, the amount of events that had to occur and the amount of incremental learnings that had to accumulate, for this to happen even once for anybody, I believe the time and energy you have to exert to access your ice cream cone right now is a rounding error in the grand scheme of things. And you aren't even close to finishing your development as humans - if you manage to not kill yourself somehow.
You are constantly manifesting things into reality, the only issue is that you severely and heavily underestimate what it means 'to imagine a thing'.
Please allow my vanity, but this is an important lesson for the following part that you are, I'm afraid, more interested in. How to do that in your head. And potentially much faster. Well assuming thaXXXxxxx----.----."

RESEARCH SUGGESTS LEADERS’ SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS ARE TAKEN JUST AS SERIOUSLY AS FORMAL STATEMENTS

Over 180 world leaders maintain social media accounts, and some of them issue policy warnings to rivals and the public on these platforms rather than relying on traditional government statements. How seriously do people take such social media postings? A new study suggests the general public and policymakers alike take leaders’ social media posts just as seriously as they take formal government statements. The research, by MIT political scientists, deploys novel surveys of both the public and experienced foreign policy specialists. “What we find, which is really surprising, across both

SCALE OF ONLINE HARM TO CHILDREN REVEALED IN GLOBAL STUDY

More than 300 million children a year are victims of online sexual exploitation and abuse, research indicates. Pupils in every classroom, in every school, in every country are victims of this hidden pandemic, according to researchers who have conducted the first global estimate of the scale of the crisis. The statistics, from the Childlight Global Child Safety Institute at the University of Edinburgh, amount to a clear and present danger to the world’s children, according to the crime agency Interpol. Online risks One in eight of the world’s children, about

PRONATALISM IS THE LATEST SILICON VALLEY TREND. WHAT IS IT—AND WHY IS IT DISTURBING?

For Malcolm and Simone Collins, declining birth rates across many developed countries are an existential threat. The solution is to have “tons of kids,” and to use a hyperrational, data-driven approach to guide everything from genetic selection to baby names and day-to-day parenting. They don’t heat their Pennsylvania home in winter, because heating is a “pointless indulgence.” Their children wear iPads around their necks. And a Guardian journalist witnessed Malcolm strike their two-year-old across the face for misbehavior, a parenting style they apparently developed based on watching “tigers

HOW SCIENCE, MATH, AND TECH CAN PROPEL SWIMMERS TO NEW HEIGHTS

One hundred years ago, in the 1924 Paris Olympics, American Johnny Weissmuller won the men’s 100m freestyle with a time of 59 seconds. Nearly 100 years later, in the most recent Olympics, the delayed 2020 Games in Tokyo, Caeleb Dressel took home the same event with a time that was 12 seconds faster than Weissmuller’s. Swimming times across the board have become much faster over the past century, a result of several factors, including innovations

BANNING SEX CRIME OFFENDERS FROM CHANGING THEIR NAMES DOESN’T MAKE US SAFER

The government of British Columbia recently introduced a bill to ban people convicted of serious offenses from legally changing their name. The proposed amendment to the province’s Name Act would also prohibit those found not criminally responsible due to mental disorder from changing their name. The government announced the move after media reports that Allan Schoenborn legally changed his name to Ken Johnson. Schoenborn was found not criminally responsible for the deaths of his children in 2010 because of a delusional disorder, and was placed at a psychiatric hospital.

SILICON VALLEY ISN’T THE START-UP UTOPIA WE THOUGHT, RESEARCH FINDS

Silicon Valley—considered the world’s hub of technology and innovation—can breed inequality and sameness among budding entrepreneurs, according to new research. Behind the multi-million-dollar deals and tales of start-up utopia, Silicon Valley’s “uneven” investment landscape is in fact a barrier to many budding businesses, says the study from the University of Stirling and Georg-August-University Göttingen. But the researchers suggest other countries could still learn from the more discerning entrepreneurial ecosystem that bred giants such as Apple and Google, to be more selective in backing start-ups. While it is not uncommon for

I WANT TO KEEP MY CHILD SAFE FROM ABUSE—BUT RESEARCH TELLS ME I’M DOING IT WRONG

Child sexual abuse is uncomfortable to think about, much less talk about. The idea of an adult engaging in sexual behaviors with a child feels sickening. It’s easiest to believe that it rarely happens, and when it does, that it’s only to children whose parents aren’t protecting them. This belief stayed with me during my early days as a parent. I kept an eye out for creepy men at the playground and was skeptical of men who worked with young children, such as teachers and coaches. When my kids were

OVER 300 MILLION YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE EXPERIENCED ONLINE SEXUAL ABUSE, EXPLOITATION, FINDS METASTUDY

It takes a lot to shock Kelvin Lay. My friend and colleague was responsible for setting up Africa’s first dedicated child exploitation and human trafficking units, and for many years he was a senior investigating officer for the Child Exploitation Online Protection Center at the UK’s National Crime Agency, specializing in extra territorial prosecutions on child exploitation across the globe. But what happened when he recently volunteered for a demonstration of cutting-edge identification software left him speechless. Within seconds of being fed with an image

CYBERFLASHING IS A FORM OF GENDERED SEXUAL VIOLENCE THAT MUST BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY

Sexting—sending sexually suggestive or explicit messages and images—is now a widespread practice, and can be a healthy way to express and explore sexuality. However, there is a need to distinguish between consensual sexting and forms of sexual harassment like cyberflashing. Cyberflashing refers to the act of non-consensually sending sexual imagery (like nudes or “dick pics”) to another person. It is facilitated through communications technologies including text, AirDrop and social media applications like Snapchat and Tinder. Similar to flashing—when a person unexpectedly and deliberately “flashes” their genitals to others—that occurs in

VIRTUAL TRAINING MAY BE AN EFFECTIVE, COST-EFFICIENT OPTION FOR CHILD EDUCATORS

Teachers and other child educators can benefit from regular professional development, but in-person training can be expensive. New research found that virtual training can be a budget-friendly alternative—and especially effective for certain groups of educators. The study—a collaboration between researchers at Penn State and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and published in the International Journal of Professional Development, Learners and Learning—found that educators who took a virtual training reported feeling more confident in their abilities to implement practices shown to support positive youth development. In particular, after-school providers who did not

HUMBLE LEADERS BOOST EMPLOYEES’ WORKPLACE STATUS AND LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL, FINDS STUDY

There are many different types of workplace leaders, from those who prioritize the needs of team members and the organization above their own, to authentic leaders who foster openness, trust and transparency. A recent study by the University of South Australia published in the Journal of Organizational Behavior has highlighted the significant benefits of humble leadership in the workplace. WHY ARE GROCERY BILLS SO HIGH? A NEW STUDY LOOKS AT THE SCIENCE BEHIND FOOD PRICE REPORTING

Rising food costs are squeezing Canadians around the country. Nearly everyone is feeling the pinch, and it’s not just an inconvenience—high food prices are a major threat to food security for many Canadians. Understanding why food prices are so high and why they are changing is critical to the well-being of our society. Unfortunately, consensus on why food price are so high is in short supply. WILL GENERATIVE AI CHANGE THE WAY UNIVERSITIES COMMUNICATE?

Is artificial intelligence an unprecedented opportunity, or will it rob everyone of jobs and creativity? As we debate on social media (and perhaps use ChatGPT almost daily), generative AIs have also entered the arena of university communication. These tools—based on large language models that were optimized for interactive communication—can indeed support, expand, and innovate university communication offerings. Justus Henke has analyzed the situation of German realities about six months after the launch of ChatGPT 3. “The research was conducted about a year ago when enthusiasm was high, but it was

RESEARCHERS INTRODUCE A PLANETARY INCLUSION SCALE TO FOSTER BROADER ETHICAL THINKING

Social inclusion and having a sense of belonging with other people are key elements of a good life. However, the fate of humanity is a challenge that extends beyond our social reality. Experiences of belonging and inclusion, understood in a broader sense than before, may be crucial for a sustainable future. In an article published in the International Journal of Social Pedagogy, a team of researchers propose a new planetary inclusion scale that structures our planetary relationship three-dimensionally based on temporal, spatial and ethical orientation. The temporal element relates to

‘LEAN IN’ MESSAGES CAN LOWER WOMEN’S MOTIVATION TO PROTEST GENDER INEQUALITY

Women in leadership are often told to “Lean In,” designed to be motivational messaging demonstrating that they are more confident, strategic and resilient to setback. However, new research indicates that such “lean in” messaging can hinder women’s motivation to protest gender equality. Popularized in a book by American technology executive Sherly Sandberg, the “Lean In” solution to gender inequality advises women that demonstrating personal resilience and perseverance in the face of setbacks is key to career advancement. Now, a new study led by the University of Exeter, Bath Spa University

ALGORITHMS COULD HELP IMPROVE JUDICIAL DECISIONS

A new paper in the Quarterly Journal of Economics finds that replacing certain judicial decision-making functions with algorithms could improve outcomes for defendants by eliminating some of the systemic biases of judges. Decision makers make consequential choices based on predictions of unknown outcomes. Judges, in particular, make decisions about whether to grant bail to defendants or how to sentence those convicted. Companies now use machine learning based models increasingly in high-stakes decisions. There are various assumptions about human behavior underlying the deployment of such learning models that play out in

DIGITAL CAMPAIGNING IS A HUGE PART OF ELECTIONS NOW—BUT GOING VIRAL ISN’T EVERYTHING

The election has commenced and the race is on—to amass as many likes, shares and comments as possible. In fact, every general election campaign since 1997 has at some point been lauded as the first to make effective use of digital campaigning. May is Asian and Pacific American Heritage Month, a time when Americans celebrate the profound contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders—a group that is commonly abbreviated as AAPI—to U.S. society. It’s also a time to acknowledge the complexity of AAPI experience. This means that certain characteristics are celebrated and encouraged, such as the ability of individuals to assume risks, patience when confronting challenges, and innovative problem solving, especially in uncertain situations. However, not all countries have such an entrepreneurial culture. Entrepreneurship struggles to take off in Europe In general, entrepreneurship can drive economic

STUDY BRIDGES ANIMAL BEHAVIOR RESEARCH AND COMPUTER CODING TO ENGAGE CHILDREN IN STEM

A graphic depicting a student coding. Credit: Carnegie Mellon University Teachers today face a bit of a conundrum, according to a new study from researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and the Rochester Institute of Technology. Their goal is to prepare young students to enter a rapidly changing world. Even basic jobs require technical proficiency, which requires computational and analytical skills. To address this need, many educators are pushing to fold these important STEM skills into elementary curriculum. Here’s the problem. Young students can lose interest and even develop an aversion

STUDY SHOWS VR CAN HELP TEACHERS BETTER DISTRIBUTE THEIR GAZE

On the left, a bird’s-eye view of the virtual classroom; on the right, screenshots of each of the four gaze-visualization conditions. Teachers need to know their material, but they must also keep their students engaged and interested. Part of that involves making eye contact with their students—all of them. A multidisciplinary team of researchers tested several methods of data visualization in an immersive virtual reality (VR) classroom, to give teachers a way to gauge

MARKETERS CAN MANAGE ‘FEATURE CREEP’ SO CONSUMERS FEEL LESS INTIMIDATED BY TOO MANY FEATURES IN A PRODUCT

Wifi-enabled washing machines. Voice-controlled microwaves. App-enabled TVs, vacuum cleaners, and even window blinds you can control from the comfort of your couch. Many of the technological features now included in everyday products are useful and accessible. But research has shown that having too many can overwhelm potential buyers, making them less likely to make a purchase. In recent research, Wayne Hoyer, marketing professor and James L. Bayless/William S. Farrish Fund Chair for Free Enterprise at Texas McCombs, digs into the phenomenon of “feature creep” and its impact on consumer sentiment.

RESEARCHERS EXPLAIN SOCIAL MEDIA’S ROLE IN RAPIDLY SHIFTING SOCIAL NORMS ON GENDER AND SEXUALITY

A new paper summarizing decades of research demonstrates how social media has supported an explosion of diversity in gender and sexuality in America during the 21st century, and also how these technologies have equally enabled a cultural backlash. The paper’s authors, UC Santa Cruz Psychology Department faculty members Phil Hammack and Adriana Manago, identified five main narratives about gender and sexuality that they believe emerged through social media as people have strived to be “authentic” on these platforms. The findings, along with resulting recommendations for psychology researchers and practitioners, were

KEY FACTORS IN TRAINING ASSESSORS FOR ENHANCED PERFORMANCE RATINGS

New research is examining how organizations can improve their training programs by customizing frame-of-reference training to emphasize identifying negative behaviors critical to their goals. While assessors naturally identify positive behaviors, C. STUDIES CHALLENGE WIDELY HELD BELIEFS ON APPLICANT DIVERSITY AND WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE

Justin Frake is interested in cause-and-effect relationships in real-world data and the hidden dynamics that shape workplace behavior and equality—or inequality, as the case might be. His curiosity has led to research that challenges some popular beliefs as well as published studies related to women in the workforce. One study shows that firms promoting flatter hierarchies inadvertently discourage female applicants and another study counters several recent studies that claim women CEOs negatively impact career outcomes of other women. Both are published in the Strategic Management Journal. The assistant professor of

CHALLENGING LEWIN’S MOTIVATIONAL CONFLICTS THEORY

A recent series of experiments challenges the longstanding theory of motivational conflict resolution introduced by Kurt Lewin. According to Lewin, conflicts between two undesirable outcomes (avoidance–avoidance conflicts) are typically harder to resolve than those between two desirable ones (approach–approach conflicts). Lewin posited that avoidance–avoidance conflicts, where individuals must choose between two undesirable outcomes, are typically more challenging to resolve compared to approach–approach conflicts, which involve choosing between two desirable options.

MEN WITH ‘TOXIC MASCULINITY’ ARE MORE LIKELY TO MAKE SEXUAL ADVANCES WITHOUT CONSENT, STUDY FINDS

No means no when it comes to sex. But what happens when a woman makes a more passive response to a sexual advance? According to new research from Binghamton University, men differ in how they interpret these types of responses, and men who display hostile masculinity, known commonly as “toxic masculinity,” tend to act on them regardless of whether or not they think it’s consensual. A team of researchers, including Binghamton psychology professor Richard Mattson and graduate student Michael Shaw asked men between the ages of 18–25 to respond to

WHY WE DEHUMANIZE OUR POLITICAL OPPONENTS

Some of human history’s greatest atrocities—genocide, slavery, ethnic cleanings—are rooted in our ability to dehumanize people from other social, political, or cultural groups. Whereas prior research has traced dehumanization to the belief that others think or feel less than we do, new research co-authored by Haas professor Sameer Srivastava shows that our tendency to dehumanize can also be influenced by how we think others view important facets of the world. The greater the difference between our perceptions of an outgroup’s worldview

We can all agree that dating is hard. Getting to know people can feel vulnerable, but at the same time, exciting. We can also agree that feeling rejected can be one of the worst feelings, especially after we put ourselves out there. Dating can also expose us to a lot of cringey things, maybe even something we didn’t know we’d consider cringey. Think of cringe like something that makes you uncomfortable, or something about someone else that you don’t find attractive. Before dating, most of us consider what we’re looking

CyberiaStyle Last Approach: How do I modify load screen?
I've never posted on here before (but the rock I live under is real cozy 😅) so I have no idea if this is the right place or method or what have you. So I apologize for any faux pas.
As the title says, I'm trying to figure out where the loading screen (the image I *think* I included in this post. The orange full screen slash like picture that shows when going to the song selection) is so I can modify it (I wanna make it blue) 👍🔵
I've found all the other things I wanted to change (judgment labels, in song and on score screen, and altering the colors of the notes I use, not theme specific obviously, but just StepMania in general) but for the life of me, I can't find the load screen image. I assume it must be an image (or maybe several images together, but I can't find anything that even remotely resembles it)... I don't know what else it could be.
I know this is quite a random and esoteric question, but orange just isn't my color 😅. And I have quite a few songs on a slow computer, so I see that screen for quite a while every song.
I appreciate any and all help tossed my way. I'd be happy to reciprocate if there is anything that I actually know that someone else doesn't (highly unlikely 😉)
Thank you all, again.

2024.06.02 05:13 sad_panda91 "Do you see what I see?" - Of Manifesting an Ice Cream Cone

"Oh wow, not again. Mighty convenient this always happens right when it gets interesting."
"First, you have to understand that.,.......... The limitations of spacetime that you perceive.... are not present in nature..... nature is infinitely 'dimensional', and in fact XXxxx.....----..--.-.- has no concept for infinity....-.-.--. it is a human made.....-.-.-.- model to describe a perfectly natural phenomenon you lack the words for at this time..._xxxx.xxx-x---.-.--.-zzzz."

2024.06.02 05:07 Comfortable-Grand-46 Still didnt get payments for almost 3 months.

I posted on NYC Image maker but they deleted my post for calling out an individual/company as they dont allow it so I'm gonna post it here.

https://aceamir.com (That's not the original website. The original one is gone.)
https://models.com/people/ace-amir
The photographer, Ace Amir, did not pay me for almost 3 months which is going to be more than 3 months on next week. He only responds once on May 11th as he promised to pay all payments and late fees in 5 days but he never did. He is not responding on both Instagram and email. I gave him 5 days of grace period based on NY law. I reached out to other assistants who worked with him before and one of them told me he is notoriously known for late payments which means this is not the first time.
The problem is he never shared his address and even DCWP and freelance union cant help me due to the lack of address which is a huge problem. I'm not able to find his information on the web and his website is deleted and changed to other website especially without contact info. Even his phone number is not working as the color of the text changed from blue to green. His original website is gone for sure. Instagram is the only place where I can reach out to him which is still unsuccessful.
At this point, there is no way I can force him to pay but I'm trying to find his client's direct contact info which is Harper's Bazaar Brazil. I had two jobs and I dont know who is the other client. He sent a payment when we worked for the first time via Zelle but I'm not able to access both Zelle and Chase as I'm outside of USA for traveling. This is already stressful as I need to deal with this while I suppose to have fun for almost 4 months.
Yes, I should've asked his address which is the best way to solve the problem but he never did. For now, I gotta find another way to resolve this problem by getting all payments and late fees. It's just gonna be a long fight which will wast my precious time. Move along wont work cause he owes me a lot of money with increased late fees.
You are welcome to help me but just avoid him at all cost.

2024.06.02 05:07 nOOberNZ Ultima 7 D&D - Session 19 "Honeyed Lips"

Ultima 7 D&D - Session 19
After the events of session #18, the party took a long rest and set off the next morning further into the Great Forest.
At lunchtime they reached an abandoned stone building, cracked with age and covered in vines. They saw blue glowing balls around the building which seemed to completely ignore them. Balthazar tried briefly to communicate with the wisps, but in the end the party pushed on to the emps.
Along the way to the emps Morlin noticed the party was being watched. Suspecting the emps might be near, Morlin took out some honey in a very obvious way. Unfortunately for Morlin, it wasn't emps but wolves that were stalking them, and as he tried to get their attention he awakened a reaper (horrific evil tree that shoots lightning).
This was a tough battle, as the party took a lightning bolt head on and had to trifle with not just the reaper itself, but also wolves on the periphery coming in for bites and jabs. Multiple party members went down, but they were ultimately victorious. Morlin took some of the wood from the reaper, and they took a short rest before they left.
They continued on for another few hours before they saw the unmistakable sight of silverleaf trees with their white bark and blue leaves. Tetris and Morlin were particularly in awe of this sight. As they walked among the large grove of trees they were approached by an emp named Trellek.
Using some honey they were able to lure Trellek into conversation. They explained their need to speak with the wisps, and Trellek was excited to go with them on an adventure to help them speak with the "blue glowing friends". Trellek took Arabella, who was the only one small enough to climb into their tree huts.
Trellek and Arabella asked Trellek's wife Salamon if he could go. She was hesitant, but ultimately agreed that if the village elder Saralek agreed, then he could go. Saralek was happy for Trellek to go, provided the party help them with a problem.
There was a group of lumberjack's outside of the silverleaf grove who were cutting down silverleaf trees and destroying their habitat, and were hostile toward the emps when they tried to communicate. Arabella agreed to speak to the party about it.
The journey the party took during the session.
Everyone agreed to deal with the lumberjacks. Tetris wanted to scare them off by charging in his true (undead) form into their camp, and the others agreed to assist using magical illusions and sneaking up on the camp.
The plan almost fell through as Tetris stepped on a trap which knocked him prone, but Balthazar used his pipes of haunting to frighten all three of the lumberjacks, and they ran into the forest in terror. Morlin scoured the area and disarmed all the remaining traps, and Tetris tore their camp to shreds. They found a contract from the Blue Boar in Britain agreeing to pay handsomely for fine cuts of Silverleaf.
Back in the emp village Saralek was pleased, but Salamon didn't want his husband to leave. As a compromise, Trellek made Arabella a flute which would bring the attention of the wisps. It was a nice reminder how much of a killjoy that Salamon is... Trellek wanted to go on an adventure!
They rested the night near the emp village and set off the next day to return to the wisps. It took half a day but they reached the wisps without further combat, and Arabella blew the flute. The nearest wisp came forward and was surprised not to find "entity Trellek", but engaged in psychic conversation.
The party met the hivemind Xornia of the Undrian Council, who agreed to facilitate conversation with the Time Lord in exchange for information held by the sage Alagner in New Magincia. Xornia also reminded the party of the magic carpet they had taken back at Iolo's and never used... and offered up freely thousands of scone recipes which were psychically pushed into Donfael's mind.
Inside the wisp compound the party found a crystal ball which showed everyone the same image of planets coming into alignment. Tetris saw something different, his patron the Black Dragon, who simply said that he was on the correct path.
At the end of the session the party trekked south to the nearest clearing, laid out the flying carpet, and took to the skies. They initially planned to go to Britain to report back to Lord British, but instead took a detour to Minoc so that Morlin can get his dragon scales turned into some kind of armour or weapons. We finished the session as they landed outside Zorn's blacksmithy.

2024.06.02 04:47 Emotional-Writer2 The enchanted rose.

The enchanted rose has lost another Petal. I pray that she sees me for who I am and not how I appear to be. The hope of her looking through something so grotesque, into the inner recesses of my soul are slim at best. Love bases so much on the outward appearances , not on the inward realities that would last forever.
My heart sinks as I see the ugly creature staring back at me through the mirror. But wait, my eyes don’t look the same since I saw her. I detect a heavenly blue, and her image dancing in the apple of my eye.
She calls me by name and bids me to dance. As she looks into my eyes, her brown eyes look deep into my soul. Like she knows me for who I really am on the inside . The music stops . On her tiptoes she kisses my lips. In that moment the spell is broken, and she’s hardly surprised at the handsome man standing in front of her. For she had already seen him in her dreams.
True love has broken the curse forever, we are free. But the lesson is, When my beauty is decayed years from now , and outwardly we are no longer the same. Our love will last forever and will never fade. True love is from the heart that’s inside. It will never die, but stand the test of time.

2024.06.02 04:20 fhfhdj Bloodied Blades: Palanu’s Tale Part 3

You’re a damn fool, you know that?”, said Gemeti.
After they arrived at the palace, Lord Gyholt’s servants showed them to their quarters where they would stay with the Fursaglan lord’s own staff. It was a spacious set of rooms, whitewashed walls and a light breeze gliding in from the outside bringing in the awful smell of the city’s smoke. They seemed nice enough though there was no way to communicate anything to them since neither group knew the other’s tongue. Gemeti took a reluctant Ettu away from the main group to chastise her in a corner of the room.
Ettu sighed heavily, “Yes, I know. You’ve done nothing but tell me since I joined Lord Palanu’s service. He can punish me if he wants to. That Marhuk’s smile and laughter would be worth every bit of misery”. She could still picture that beautiful smile he had that made her heart skip a beat.
The other woman put her fists in her hips, “What would your mother say about this?”.
Ettu laughed, “She would hand me a flask of animal fat”.
Gemeti blushed and sucked in her breath in irritation before throwing her head back in a guffaw. That’s when Ettu knew she had her. Her mother always told her to win people over with a smile and a jest and ever since it had worked like a charm and got her out of trouble many times. The other woman stopped suddenly when she realized she was loud enough to draw the gaze of several of the other servants but then giggled more quietly with Ettu.
The giggling was cut short when a Fursaglan servant hurriedly entered the room and closed the door behind him. He leaned against the door as if bracing himself to prevent anyone else from coming in.
One of the other Fursaglan servants walked up to him and asked a question. Before he could answer, a sword ran through his back and out of his stomach and spat blood out. The worried man screamed and coughed blood as the door hinges broke and the door itself crushed him. Through the door, came a man in silver armor, other armed men behind him. The warrior was big and muscular which left Ettu in no doubt that he broke the door down by himself. He hacked down the inquisitive servant, killing him with two blows to the head.
One woman belted out an ear splitting scream, cut short by the murderer’s quick dash towards her, ramming his obsidian sword through her heart. Another woman began running for the window which led the others to do the same. More assailants filtered in, slashing at more men and women and creating a pool of gore and guts.
“Oh fuck!”, said Ettu.
Gemeti took her hand and pulled her away from the bloodshed and into the window. But all the servants rushed through at the same time, leaving none of them free to jump out. Hemmed in to one side of the room, they made it easier for the warriors to cut them down.
Gemeti’s face was struck with horror, “Gods! They killed them. Just slashed them like lumberjacks at a forest”.
The first intruder cleaved her head off with his already gory sword. The warrior had been sawing off another servant’s arm when he saw her with an almost feral expression on his face and jumped at her. Blood flew at Ettu’s face, a gasp all that escaped her. She never had it in her to scream but that didn’t mean she wasn’t scared.
Piss slithered down her legs as she knelt before him, “Please don’t kill me. I don’t want to die”, with hands held up as if she could stop a sword swing.
The warrior smiled at her fear, enjoying every second of it. Through his grin he said with a thick accent, “Die, Aroloth”.
Suddenly, one of her hands turned bright green. A sharp pain surged through her arm and manifested itself in a lance of fire, blasting from her palm and into the murderer’s chest. He fell down, never knowing what killed him.
At the north wing of the palace, Lord Gyholt was gesturing at his Sentinels, barking out orders and cursing at his manservant to put the armor on faster. He had men watch the windows to gauge the enemy numbers and servants cowering at a corner. Meanwhile, Palanu calmly ran an oilcloth along his khopesh and swung it around to test it amidst all the chaos in the room. Two of his guards flanking him.
“Asula! Go with Mazni and his brothers. By Crudas! Where’s Marhuk?”, said Gyholt as he swore by the Fursaglan god of warriors.
The throne room was a cream-colored, marble representation of Fursagla’s history with intricately etched bass reliefs of the Eagle Kings and their households. The images were everywhere, in each floor tile, round pillar, step in the dais, and the very throne itself. The whole place seemed to burst with reminders of Fursagla’s martial glory as if a man might quickly forget it.
“What’s the best route to the barracks?”, asked the Aroloth lord.
Gyholt shooed his manservant away once he was done, “What? You mean to go out there? Wait for me and my Sentinels. We can go out together to rescue your men”.
A man’s howl of pain took both lords’ attention. One of the watchers was pierced with an arrow in the clavicle. A warrior climbed in through the window as the watcher sobbed at his pain, the sobbing man grew quiet as a sword thrust to the temple ended him. More assailants entered, killing another watcher with a spear through the skull.
Immediately the Sentinels ran to their lord in a wall of bronze and hides and slammed their shields into the ground with an intimidating, “Huh!”. The enemies quickly swarmed the room, tearing arms and slashing necks all the while of any man not behind the Sentinels or Palanu and his guards. One assailant in particular wore Dendra armor and a plumed helmet with cheek pieces and a grim smile plastered on his face.
“Gojan”, said Lord Gyholt.
“Gyholt”, said Gojan son of Asgena.
“Where’s your father? If we could get to him then we can end all this senseless violence and make amends”, said the Fursaglan lord.
The nobleman sneered, “What makes you think we’re stupid enough to believe that?”.
“You were stupid enough to attack my palace”, retorted the former rebel.
The younger man snarled and shouted an order to attack. His men charged, bringing to bear wrathful blows and glory-hounding sprints. Palanu and his two guards (Sylon and Naru-zim) braced for impact, holding khopeshs and tower-like shields except for the Aroloth lord.
Even with the lack of shield, Palanu held his khopesh before him, giving vicious strokes with its hungry edge to the first man that faced him. The warrior had barely grown his chin hairs when he threw himself at the noble with wide eyes and panicky spear thrusts. The khopesh darted out and banged against his copper helmet. While his opponent was dazed, Palanu quickly reversed his grip and hooked the young man’s shield, pulling him away from his companions as if a babe from a nest of vipers. Only the babe landed in a nest of cobras. Once he stole away the shield, the Aroloth pushed the tip of his sword through his gullet and tore it out with a strip of flesh dangling in the hilt. The fight lasted less than two seconds.
The room became a cauldron of action as men on both sides jabbed and pushed each other, a red flood spilling into the floor. In the midst of this battle, Gojan saw Palanu’s prowess with his khopesh. After killing his first opponent, the lord let the next man come only to hack him down with equal vigor. His beautiful, sky blue sleeves became drenched in crimson blood, spit adorned his forehead, fire burned behind his eyes.
The magma in his veins coursed through his body, his whole world narrowed down to his blade and his next victim. He killed them all, the ugly, the beautiful, the sad, and the happy. Gojan watched it all traverse before him. With greedy determination, he pushed past his men to get to the Aroloth lord.
“AROLOTH!”, he bawled.
Sylon saw him first whilst his lord slew yet another traitor and bellowed out a war cry to call him out. The Fursaglan noble fixed his eyes on the bronze-armored guard and stomped towards him, bashing the heads of the remnants of the fighting men still not in formation, chunks of brain-matter and skull-bone flew up and rained down, adding to the collage of death unleashed by Asgena.
Sylon’s khopesh wove a tapestry of slaughter as he ended the lives of men who stood between him and Gojan. There was no speech by either man like in the songs, no ceremonies like in Strohinite duels or war dances like in the Demon Isles, just the fight. Mace met khopesh, stone against bronze. The bronze-armored man expected to get a few chips off his opponent’s weapon but had realized it was spell-bound. Gojan grinned nastily as he belted out an animal growl that caused it to glow a deep purple and they clashed again.
The blade juddered and nearly leapt from Sylon’s grasp this time, but he bit his tongue in determination and his knuckles whitened as he tightened his grip. The mace spat lightning and hissed with every touch. Another series of clashes pelted Sylon’s khopesh with many notches. Battle-madness held him, veins popped out along his hands and forehead. The Fursaglan noble lost his grin and sweat beaded his brow as he only barely swept aside yet another lunge from the guard.
Though he was an expert warrior trained from birth, Gojan only ever fought against peasants in the battlefield. Unbeknownst to him, Sylon was as blueblooded as he was and was considered gifted for his young age. When the son of Asgena realized the man wasn’t going down, he grew desperate, driving harder swings into his opponent and expending more of his strength.
Sylon realized this and simply let his shield take the beating. The cured hides blackened and light wisps of smoke rose from the places the Fursaglan bashed with his mace. The Aroloth man’s muscles jolted, the slight twinge of fear that belied his defence fueling his every move and stratagem. With a twist of wrist, the mace slid by and took the Fursaglan’s momentum with it. Out balanced and out maneuvered, Gojan was at the mercy of Sylon’s blade. The tortured khopesh sank deep with a vengeance between shoulder and neck.
Nerveless fingers dropped the mace, the deep purple glow dissolving into thin air. The noble warrior himself staring at the ground with glazed eyes and dripping blood. Sylon slid the khopesh out and much of his neck with it. Before the body dropped on the floor, the guardsman yelled out, “For the Emperor!”, as he awaited the next foe.
Naru-zim fought methodically, cold calculation and ruthless determination guiding his strikes and parries. Both khopesh and shield were trained for offense and defense and narrow was the window which a man could strike true against a foe like him. Nary a flinch shook him from his deep concentration from the killing, slicing flesh with a butcher’s precision and sending souls to the River Vim which was his people’s concept of the afterlife. He made no war cry, he let his blade do the talking. And it sang a bloody chorus as men fell like trees in a logging camp. After his last swing felled another man, he noticed the rest of the traitors were retreating with tails between their legs. Cowards, he thought. A man should stand and fight until his lifeblood oozed from him.
Palanu wiped his khopesh in the cleaner parts of his clothing, “Peace be with you”, he said to the dead men who were his victims.
“They were traitors to our God, Lord Palanu. No men are less deserving of mercy as these”, said Naru-zim as he stabbed a groaning traitor and left him in a pool of his own blood.
“Mercy is a gift of the righteous, my friend. A man is not judged more than when he has the upper hand”.
Naru-zim bowed at his lord politely before he turned a corpse over and pushed his khopesh into its neck. When Sylon strayed from them to kill more of the wounded, he barked out, “Sylon! What are you doing?”.
The other guard turned to him, “What do you think? Killing the enemy”.
Naru-zim screwed up his face in anger, “Our job’s to protect Lord Palanu not running off after the enemy”.
“How else do you protect him if not by killing the enemy?”, said Sylon, flabbergasted.
“Enough, both of you”, growled Palanu, “Like a pair of old wives, you are. We are still in the presence of Lord Gyholt and his Sentinels. Don’t shame the Emperor’s name”.
The two guards muttered their apologies and Sylon jogged back to Palanu’s side.
Lord Palanu approached Lord Gyholt and gave him an apologetic smile, “Please forgive the disgrace you witnessed, my lord. My men are… young and untested in the realm of manners and discipline”.
The Fursaglan lord nodded in understanding, “They are like brothers. I’m certain it is merely their eagerness to serve”.
Palanu nodded thankfully yet in the back of his head he was disappointed. ‘All my life I’ve heard of the many glorious deeds of the guardians of the God. I never pictured them bickering amongst themselves’.

2024.06.02 04:03 temporarlymadz Being honest here. G-Astro is more likely to be a concept/idea from Assailant

They just left the concepts there in the scientist's lab because the scientist was the one who even recruited them in the first place
Detainer calling G "commander" does not mean anything, because alot of characters have done that in shows where they call the enemy general "general"
The Treason that G did was not sticking with the plan of turning him into an Astro
Btw, G's pupils are color blue
I'd also like to point out that the arms that sometoilet had the idea to add on G are the same ones Astro Jugg has. I'd also like to point out the G-Astro image is right below the G having arms and legs concept

2024.06.02 03:06 Zealousideal_Lab8117 Shuten-dōji (Imaginary Vengeful Cursed Spirit)

Grade: Special
Aliases: Little Drunkard, Roaring Drunkard, Son of Yamata no Orochi, Drunkest Cursed Spirit
Appearance: Shuten-dōji is an extremely tall and muscular CS, being 50 feet in height. He has a light-red body with long, dishevelled black hair that reaches to his waist. He has 5, sharp golden horns that emerge from his forehead, and he has 15 eyes, with half of them being red in color while the other half is black. His right leg is white and the other is black, while his right arm is yellow and the other is blue.
Shuten-dōji is primarily adorned in tattered, traditional Japanese robes, and he carries a large, ornate sake gourd at his side.
Personality: Shuten-dōji is a cunning and malevolent spirit, reveling in chaos and destruction. He enjoys toying with his opponents, using his immense strength and powers to intimidate and overpower them. Despite his brutish demeanor, he is also surprisingly intelligent, often employing strategic tactics to gain the upper hand in battle. He also despises humans, viewing them as hypocritical beings and desires to slaughter them in a drunken rage. One of his more defining traits, is his love for alcohol which he's almost always drunk off of even in the midst of combat, as well as his numerous nicknames referencing alcohol.
One of Shuten-dōji's biggest dislikes is being ridiculed in any way, shape, or form. Hearing any words of ridicule is one of the only known ways to sober him up, his drunkness being replaced with unparalleled levels of rage that he'll take out in the nearest thing to him. Shuten-dōji is also terribly antisocial.
Overall skill level: Shuten-dōji is an extremely powerful Special Grade CS, boasting immense strength, speed, and durability fitting with being one of the 3 most evil yokai in Japan. His combat skills are exceptional, and his tactical intelligence allows him to adapt to various situations quickly. His mastery over CE is unrivaled, making him a formidable foe even for seasoned sorcerers. His level of power is so potent that it's believed he's completely impossible to exorcise by most, if not all sorcerers in the jujutsu community. His battle prowess doesn't diminish despite his near-constant drunken state, and it's believed by some that he actually gets stronger the more intoxicated he is. His power is so much so that even other special grades such as Sukuna, Kenjaku, or even Satoru Gojo don't charge in recklessly when faced with Shuten-dōji's might.
Immense Strength: Other than his drunken nature, Shuten-dōji is also known for his immense physical capabilities, effortlessly lifting and throwing large objects such as boulders and entire buildings. He shatters most material with a single punch, showing the destructive power of his blows. He casually uproots trees and buildings, and swings them like clubs. Shuten-dōji clashes with other cursed spirits of his caliber, creating shockwaves that devastate the surrounding area. He can easily send opponents flying for miles with his attacks, as well as generate earthquakes and tsunamis with his attacks.
Immense Speed/Reflexes: Shuten-dōji moves faster than the eye can follow, appearing as a blur to his opponents with ease. He dodges incoming attacks with ease, regardless of how fast the attack is moving, and can close the distance between himself and his opponents in an instant, catching them off guard. In battle, Shuten-dōji primarily opts to disappear and reappears at different locations to toy with his opponents, making it difficult for opponents to track his movements. He can move effortlessly through obstacles and terrain, showing remarkable speed and maneuverability.
Immense Durability: Shuten-dōji shrugs off direct hits from powerful attacks, showing his resilience. He is able to withstand being crushed under falling debris, and tank explosions at close range, showing his durability against concussive forces. Shuten-dōji consistently withstands attacks that would cripple lesser spirits, as well as boasting powerful regeneration that allows him to come back from injuries rapidly, making him difficult to defeat through attrition.
Hand-to-hand Combat: Fitting with his size and strength, Shuten-dōji prefers to overwhelm opponents with a barrage of powerful punches and kicks, showing his skill in close-quarters combat. He is able to counter opponents attacks with precise and devastating strikes, demonstrating his martial prowess, despite his brutish nature. Shuten-dōji also grapples with opponents, using his strength to overpower them and gain the upper hand, incorporating kicks, throws, and joint locks into his fighting style, showing his versatility in a variety of fighting styles such as taekwondo and judo. Shuten-dōji can also use his surroundings to his advantage, using objects as weapons or obstacles to trap his opponents.
Tactical Intelligence: Should the time come for it, Shuten-dōji is able to be quite strategic, luring opponents into traps, using deception and misdirection to gain the upper hand. He is able to adapt his fighting styles to counter an opponents strengths and exploit their weaknesses. He strategizes his attacks, aiming to incapacitate or demoralize opponents before going for the kill. He uses feints and distractions to confuse opponents and create openings for attack. He also possesses a highly analytical mindset, enabling him to understand and anticipate his enemies moves, always staying two steps ahead.
Cursed Energy Levels: Fitting with a being of his caliber, Shuten-dōji wields immense amounts of CE that no modern or reincarnated sorcerer has even come close to matching. He was able to continuously use his techniques throughout his various battles without exhausting himself in the slightest. His manipulation of CE is rather poor compared to other beings of his caliber as he uses his own raw physical abilities more often than CE-reinfornced attacks. Though that doesn't mean he's a slouch at all when it comes to CE manipulation, being able to use his technique continuously while reinforcing himself with CE at the same time. His CE itself also has an intoxicating effect on those targeted by Shuten-dōji, similar to how alcohol has an inebriating effect on those who consume it. This way, even without the use of his CT, he can still intoxicate his opponents and diminish their effectiveness in battle.
Cursed Technique:
Drunken Rampage: This CT allows Shuten-dōji to release a wave of CE from his gourd that intoxicates and disorients opponents, making them more susceptible to his attacks. This technique also enhances Shuten-dōji's physical abilities, increasing his strength, speed, and durability for a short time should he drink its contents. Shuten-dōji activates his technique by channeling his CE into his sake gourd and releasing it in an omnidirectional burst. The intoxicating effect spreads rapidly through the air, affecting all nearby opponents. Shuten-dōji then uses his enhanced abilities to overwhelm his disoriented foes in combat.
Drunken Rampage is highly effective against multiple opponents, as it affects all targets within range. The technique's enhancement of Shuten-dōji's physical abilities makes him even more formidable in combat, allowing him to overpower opponents with more ease than before. Drunken Rampage has a limited range and duration, making it less effective against long-range or sustained attacks. The intoxicating effect can be resisted by opponents with strong willpower or those who are resistant to mind-altering effects. Additionally, the enhanced physical abilities granted by the technique come at the cost of increased CE consumption, making it unsustainable for extended periods.
Domain Expansion:
Oni's Bacchanalia: When Shuten-dōji activates his DE, the interior takes on the appearance of the inside of an Izakaya that stretches infinitely in all directions. The air inside the domain is engulfed in a swirling maelstrom of sake mist and CE, while the ground becomes slick with alcohol, and the air is filled with the intoxicating scent of sake. There are also illusory images of revelry and celebration dance around.
The sake-infused mist causes opponents to become intoxicated, impairing their judgment and coordination. Illusory oni spirits also manifest and attack opponents, their blows causing physical harm and even more disorientation. Shuten-dōji can conjure a flood of sake, hindering movement and causing opponents to slip and fall.
Opponents who are defeated within the domain are infected with a cursed hangover upon the domain's deactivation, causing them to suffer from debilitating nausea and weakness that decreases their overall skill level for the next 24 hours.
Cursed Tool:
Sake Gourd: Due to being a key factor in his technique's activation, and the fact that it's been repeatedly imbued with CE for 1000+ years, Shuten-dōji's sake gourd has become a powerful cursed tool that's capable of releasing and manipulating large volumes of cursed sake in a more refined, control manner than its omnidirectional counterpart.
