2024.05.17 05:20 AliceStanleyJr "I Hate My Reflection for Years and Years": TTPD & Sylvia Plath’s “The Magic Mirror"

Hi, clowns! Found lots of connections to an essay Sylvia Plath wrote and TTPD. Lots of info below, but was interesting!
TL; DR Plath’s college thesis paper is all about troubled poets and their “DOUBLES.”
Initial Tortured Poets and Sylvia Plath Connections
Of course, the theme of TTPD is tortured poets, so many avid literary Swifties have enjoyed seeking connections between Swift’s new songs and iconic poetry. No connections are overt, but some seem to be more likely than others. Namely, there’s been much discussion of Virginia Woolf thanks to the song “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?”(perhaps a riff on the Edward Albee play title). Other Swifties have found possible lyrical links to Mary Shelley and Charlotte Bronte. Swift herself references Patti Smith and Dylan Thomas in the album’s title track.
I remembered a third poet in relation to Smith and Thomas: Sylvia Plath, obviously an all timer of a tortured poet. I remember hearing an anecdote that she had been obsessed with Thomas and stalked him outside the Chelsea Hotel (also named in the TTPD title track). I did a quick skim of Plath’s Wikipedia to confirm and then started noticing many possible connections to TTPD and Plath’s life.
In the “Fortnight” music video, Swift acts out being institutionalized for insanity and getting electric shock treatment—two significant experiences in Plath’s life. Plath was also coupled with a deeply problematic man, Ted Hughes. Plath fell in love with Hughes for his artistic talent before he revealed himself to be an unsupportive parter, ultimately cheating on Plath with a younger woman. The narrative is not too dissimilar to the narrative about Swift’s alleged ex Matty Healy, as seemingly told in TTPD. (Of course, we don’t know the true subjects of Swift’s songs—if they’re even actually confessional—but some key hints point to Healy. Whether those hints provide actual context to Swift’s life or to the story Swift is telling of her life, one cannot know.) Finally, several of TTPD songs reference a latent desire for suicide (“I might as well die / it would make no difference” etc.). Okay, post-“finally,” these are stretches, but, I’ll note anyway: one of Plath’s most famous collections of poems is titled Ariel, but an alternate title was Daddy. There are connections to both words in TTPD via the song “But Daddy I Love Him.” The title is a line from the Disney movie The Little Mermaid (which features the main character Ariel, a mermaid, caught between two worlds). Extra clowning: some people (hi, I'm people) believe Swift’s 1989 costume for her first Paris concert was an allusion to Ariel: a pink crop top and a seafoam skirt.
As I dug into Plath's life, I couldn’t help but also see similarities to Swift's life. Both women were prolific writers from a very young age. Also, although possibly obscured through artistic license, both women were/are known to write about their own lives. (Plath was apparently encouraged by her professors Robert Lowell and Anne Sexton to write from her experience. I cannot help but tie in Swift’s “The Manuscript” lyric “the Professor said to write what you know.”) Both Plath and Swift expressed/express their depression via their writing, but if you only knew them from their public personas, you’d never guess the depths of their struggles. It seems both Plath and Swift lived/live double lives. Plath was actually fascinated by the concept of doubles. In fact, the concept of doubling was the topic of Plath’s college thesis paper “The Magic Mirror.”
The Magic Mirror and TTPD
Plath’s college paper is sadly not available to the general public. (It had a limited print run in, you guessed it, 1989.) But! I was able to read a few texts about the thesis, and the amount of possible TTPD references is astounding.
Since we can’t analyze Swift’s work via Plath’s directly, I’d like to share several key quotes from the most telling article I could find about the “The Magic Mirror”: “Sylvia Plath’s Magic Mirror” by Kelly Coyne (May 2018, The Los Angeles Review of Books). (To be noted, Coyne has also written about Swift, in her article “Growing Up In Taylor Swift’s America” in December 2023 on Literary Hub—a fabulous read!)
Early in her article, Coyne sets the scene for Plath's thesis:
“Her undergraduate thesis, which she wrote as a senior at Smith College...is titled “The Magic Mirror: A Study of the Double in Two of Dostoevsky’s Novels.” “The Magic Mirror” explores literary doubles made up of a character’s repressed traits, and, as the double grows in power, it heralds the protagonist’s death. Citing Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as well as Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, Plath argued that the choice to create a double works to “reveal hitherto concealed character traits in a radical manner” and simultaneously exposes the driving conflicts of the novel housing that character. Her thesis claims that both Ivan, of The Brothers Karamazov, and Golyadkin, of The Double, have attempted to repress troubling aspects of their personalities, resulting in the double.”
Immediately, I imagine the two versions of Swift from the “Anti-Hero” music video. One Swift is real, true, sensible. The other is a pot-stirring, self-esteem destroying, alcoholic. During Eras, the huge Swift (monster on a hill) screams and stomps around in the background while the real, true Swift smiles and dances in a sparkle dress onstage. The fandom seems to be referring to these two Swifts as Taylor Swift and TAYLOR SWIFT (TM). Folks have theorized Post-Malone in the Fortnight music video is not necessarily a lover, but a twin, or double, of Swift. This theory is enhances by the Eras visuals during that song, specifically two dancers walking away to the back of the stage, but then becoming one.
More Coyne: “Plath, quoting Dostoyevsky in her thesis, noted that Ivan’s double, Smerdyakov, is “wrinkled” and “yellow.” The distinct differences in appearance between originator and double, she continued, are meant to reflect the protagonist’s mental state and cultural status.”
First of all, yellow. In the Gaylor community, folks have often theorized yellow symbolizes being closeted—a reading based on the symbolic coloring in the 1999 film …But I’m a Cheerleader. However, one need not be a Gaylor to consider the importance of yellow to Swift’s storytelling. Most recently, Swift performed “my tears ricochet” at Eras in a bright yellow dress, as her dancers were dressed for a funeral. Following Coyne’s analysis of Plath's analysis of Dostoyevsky, one could guess Swift is teasing a death of some version of herself.
Coyne discusses how Plath clearly used a “double” of herself to write The Bell Jar. Plath herself spent a summer in New York interning for Mademoiselle. The protagonist in TBJ, Esther, spends a summer in New York interning at a magazine too. To go even further down the rabbit hole, Esther also doubles herself, frequently expressing normalcy on the outside and despair on the inside. On the book's first page, Esther tells her audience, “I was supposed to be having the time of my life.” (Again, I cannot help but hear a Swift echo of, “I can read your mind / she’s having the time of her life” from “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” about smiling through her depression.) Coyne makes many more references to mirrors and concealing in The Bell Jar, Ether’s split (and sadness) gets worse and worse the more she hides who she is from others. Notably, at a low point, Esther hides under her mother’s bed. (And Swift sings of a post-heartbreak depression, “Afterwards she only ate kids' cereal / And couldn't sleep unless it was in her mother's bed.”)
Coyne writes about the “imprisoned” aspect of doubles: “The wound from which Esther tries, and fails, to hide chimes with the inescapable, colonizing double, and Plath’s language again illustrates its penal nature: it is inside Esther, but it traps her like a jail cell.” (Again, I cannot help but see references to “Fresh Out the Slammer”, “The Smaller Man Who Ever Lived,” and the TTPD Eras visuals of cages and cell lighting.)
Coyne, on Plath’s doubles’ names, something Swift has not ever used (or so we think): “From her conception of The Bell Jar all the way to its final revisions, Plath suffered an exhausting amount of anxiety over its heroine’s name.” Plath wrote to a friend, “‘I’ll have to publish it under a pseudonym, if I ever get it accepted, because it’s so chock full of real people I’d be sued to death’...Indeed, this wasn’t mere paranoia; she did have to change her protagonist’s name at the instruction of her editor for legal reasons.”
Coyne continues, “Most novelists likely have concerns about being associated with the characters to whom they give life, especially the ugly ones, and especially when the character resembles its author. Yet what is unique about Plath’s case is her knowledge of the theoretical underpinnings and implications of her choice to push Esther away, and the hold this knowledge assumed on Plath’s work and life. Another look at The Bell Jar with a consideration of Esther as Plath’s double tangles the issue even further, and Plath drops clues for this kind of reading throughout the novel. Esther, for example, sits down to write her own novel and recounts, “My heroine would be myself, only in disguise. She would be called Elaine. Elaine. I counted the letters on my fingers. There were six letters in Esther, too. It seemed a lucky thing.” Not coincidentally, Plath’s first name has six letters as well.” Again, Plath was in a bizarre double infinity loop (like the loop on the Eras stage in “Down Bad”?). Plath was concealing her double, the protagonist in her novel, who was concealing her double, the protagonist in her novel.
Coyne wraps up her findings: “In her thesis, written nearly a decade earlier, as she turned 22 — the year after her first documented suicide attempt — Plath claimed, quoting Otto Rank:
In such situations, where the Double symbolizes the evil or repressed elements in man’s nature, the apparition of the Double “becomes a persecution by it, the repressed material returns in the form of that which represses.” Man’s instinct to avoid or ignore the unpleasant aspects of his character turns into an active terror when he is faced by his Double, which resurrects those very parts of his personality which he sought to escape. The confrontation of the Double in these instances usually results in a duel which ends in insanity or death for the original hero.”
Coyne seems to argue Plath believed an artist's double has the power to become bigger than the artist herself, ultimately killing her. Is TTPD Swift's predetermination of, hopefully, her her double's death instead of her own?
In Conclusion: Plath to her Mentor, Dessner on Swift
Who knows what TTPD is really truly about, and who knows if we ever will.
The biggest Easter egg, hiding in plain sight, is that the album is titled THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT. There’s no apostrophe after “poet.” Nor is there an apostrophe after the “s” in “poets.” The department does not belong to a poet or to a collection of poets. It is a department OF tortured poets, perhaps two, to be exact. …or perhaps the album indicates the departure of the tortured poet...and her double.
I’ll sign off with two final quotes from my research:
According to Coyne, three months before Plath died by suicide, she had written a mentor about her second (obviously unfinished) book. Plath wrote, “It is to be called “Doubletake”, meaning that the second look you take at something reveals a deeper, double meaning […] it is semi-autobiographical about a wife whose husband turns out to be a deserter and philanderer although she had thought he was wonderful & perfect.”
According to Aaron Dessner’s TTPD release Instagram post: ”Keep searching and you'll find some new detail, layer or sliver of meaning with each listen.”
SUBREDDIT PS! Shout out to Expensive_Succotash5 for noting the TTPD intro poem's reference to being out of the oven, could be an allusion to Plath's death. Also shout-out to Good-Amphibian-7993 for this connection to a photo of Plath with a rose, not unlike Swift's album rose art.

2024.05.17 04:49 NewWays91 Why Anastasia Worked as a Film, But Not on Stage (LOOOONG POST)

Adaptation is a game of give and take. Especially when you're adapting something from film to the stage, you have to be aware of what you are losing by removing from the piece when placing all of it in real time in front of the actors. With film you can use close-ups, montages, quick editing, lighting tricks, visual effects etc to create your world. The suspension of belief in film can be harder to keep in tact because we expect a degree of realism from it. In the theater, we know everything we're watching is an artifice. We know the sets are made of cardboard. We know the ocean is shiny plastic. We know that's not real blood or a real knife. You're going into this with a much higher suspension of belief than in film where the goal is often to mimic real life as much as humanly possible. One bad visual effect can break the whole movie. Think of how many reviews, good and bad, couldn't help but mention the less than great visuals in the final battle in the first Black Panther film. On stage, you have the benefit of actors being able to respond in real time to anything that goes wrong and because that person is right in front of us, we have that connection with them and we can go along for the ride much easier than with film. That give and take can make or break an adaptation because for whatever you take away you have to justify that choice by adding something to it. Many adaptations, regardless of the medium, don't always do this and if they do they don't fully understand why what they removed worked. Anastasia is one such example of this because while they do try to add new elements to the story, it almost feels like an entirely different show. But to explain the intricacies of that we need to go back, all the way back.
Don Bluth made a name for himself primarily in the 80's after leaving Disney and creating his own animated films. His work was seen by many as anti-Disney because of the complexity of themes, darker subject matter and animation style that wasn't afraid to be uncomfortable or ugly. That's the general perception of his work but I'd also argue that the relationships between the characters in his films were much more fleshed out and complex than a lot of the stuff Disney was releasing at the time or after. Bluth wasn't afraid to have his characters be rude or mean or cowardly or insecure. The protagonist wasn't always a hero in the purest sense and oftentimes characters would act in a way we'd consider realistic. If they were in a scary situation, they'd run away or try to get out of it. If it was a situation that could benefit them, they'd try to profit to the fullest. Bluth placed his characters in worlds that were very mean and cruel but this only served to heighten the moments of joy and levity. As the 90's rolled on and Disney managed to climb back to the top of the mountain, Bluth did what he could to try to keep up. He didn't see a ton of success in the 90's largely because while at times he tried to ape the Disney formula, they still felt like watered down Don Bluth films.
Enter Lynn Arhens and Stephen Flathery.
In the 90's, these two were some of the biggest names in musical theater with projects like Once On This Island and Ragtime under their belts, to name a few. Lynn Arhens is actually a personal hero and inspiration of mine and oddly enough not for her theater work, although I'm a huge fan of that as well. I grew up watching Schoolhouse Rock as a kid and I actually learned how to write songs while watching those videos. Laugh all you want but you tell me how'd you explain something as complex as parts of grammar or the solar system or the revolutionary war in three minutes or less, for children no less. Her superpower is being able to explain a lot of information in a very short amount of time while having you sing along. Another thing she excels at is making songs the audience can actually leave the theater humming. That being said, it's worth contextualizing the world in which the bulk of their success was born.
Much like Democrats shell shocked by the Republican successes of the 90's, everyone not named Andrew Lloyd Webber was still in a state of awe and envy due to the massive success of Phantom of the Opera, Cats and Evita. The mega musical was born in the 80's and as we tap danced into the 90's, everyone else was trying to catch up. A characteristic of musicals from this era was that they all had that one big song they could perform just about everywhere to pull people in who otherwise may have never given the show a second glance. This was often the catchiest song in the show, oftentimes the opener, and the rest of the songs could range from equally good to songs you'd skip on the soundtrack. This is very much an approach that Arhens and Flathery would use and while I wouldn't say any of their songs were outright bad, there's often quite a bit of fluff. On the flip side, the 90's Disney animated musicals maybe had 5 to 7 songs and there was definitely an economy of time at play here. Today an animated film can be two hours, in the 90's this was far from the case. Every song needed to have a specific function within the story and character development. Rarely would you get songs that are just there to be there. Les Poissons is an example of this. The court of miracles and gargoyles number from Hunchback are also examples. But usually the stronger films like Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King etc were very careful about how many songs and where they were placed. In theater, you can cut and remove songs during previews or even during the run of the show. Outside of doing test screenings, film doesn't really afford you this unless you're early enough in production that the changes can be done in a reasonable amount of time. It's not like Disney could've released a new version of Hunchback as it was in theaters if audiences weren't responding to A Guy Like You. All of this is important because while Don Bluth was very much aping Disney's style at the time, it was clear he was trying to bring elements of the theater to the film as well.
Anastasia the film for all its flaws, and we'll get to those, is a pretty tight narrative and nearly every single song serves some sort of narrative or character based purpose. If a character is singing there is a reason why and that character is important in some way. A big part of the reason why it works is because while it's definitely inspired by The Mouse's then current offerings, it still very much feels like a Don Bluth film. The concept of even turning this story into a musical is very off-beat and in-tune with what Bluth would normally make. I can't imagine Disney making The Secret of Nimh but I can imagine Bluth trying and succeeding at making The Black Cauldron. I really don't see Disney ever making a film like All Dog's Go to Heaven but I can definitely see Bluth doing something really interesting with The Great Mouse Detective. His style is dark and evocative and isn't afraid to make you deeply uncomfortable or sad. Anastasia definitely toes the line but there's sequences in there I just cannot imagine Disney ever doing. The sequence for Once Upon a December is so haunting, melancholy, deeply sad and yet hopeful. Anything having to do with those weird demon things, especially when they try to get Anya to commit suicide, is something Eisner would never let his animators do. At the same time, the relationship between Anya and Demitri feels less like a fairytale romance but honestly like a 90's Meg Ryan romcom. They argue like normal people. They joke with each other like an actual couple would. They feel very realistic and realistic relationships between characters is something Bluth excels at. Because the worlds he creates are usually pretty ugly in some ways, it allows for the relationships to be more grounded. You wouldn't but Anya falling for Demitri in a day like Ariel did for Eric because the world the former couple inhabits feels harsher and therefore the characters have more grit. That being said the film does have flaws that become very relevant once we start talking about the stage version:
1) The villain does not feel properly integrated into the story. Most Disney villains had some kind of relationship with the protagonist that sets the main conflict into motion. Ursula is the one who conducts the spell. Scar is both Simba's uncle and kills Mufasa. Jafar is the first main character we ever see and he's the one who finds Aladdin. Rasputin is in the opening and he does set up the main conflict but there's no relationship between him and the protagonists. They don't even know he's alive until the last ten minutes of the film. He impact the narrative but he definitely could have been woven into the narrative more. I think confining him to the underworld was a mistake. With some slight reworking, you could have had him appearing as some of the randos Anastasia meets along her journey or even have the orphanage owned by him a la Mister Sinister. The setting and time period feels more like a suggestion than any sort of adherence to historical accuracy so they could've gone wild.
2) Most of the stuff in Paris feels like a completely separate movie. The last song we get is Key to Your Heart, which is also the closest we get to fluff, and there's no song within the film proper until after that. At the Beginning absolutely slaps but it should've been in the actual film. Everything after Sophie's song is fine but the film takes on a much more serious and grounded tone until Rasputin decides to remind us he's in the movie. The somewhat surreal tone and the momentum the film had comes to a screeching halt once we get to Paris. That being said, it's still a very good portion of the film but it doesn't really match with anything else in the first two acts.
3) Rasputin's motivations aren't entirely clear. He's still alive because the curse hasn't been fulfilled, I think. He wants to die forreal but that only happens if Anya is offed and even then that's ambiguous. Does he wanna die? Does he wanna be human again? Did he want power of any sort? If he wants to fulfill the curse to move on, we see he bites the dust quite literally once Anya breaks the glowing thingy anyway. It's a cartoon so you could say don't think too hard about it but the logic falls apart the exact second you analyze it. Why not have Bartok just smash the thing once he realizes it's still active? Why does Rasputin want the Romanovs dead so damn badly? His reasonings aren't explained well in the beginning so his actions feel more like an act of interia that anything else.
4) The side characters are kinda annoying. Vlad is mostly okay because he serves a definite role in the story as playing the more level headed one to Demitri's more fiery personality. Sophie starts to grate on my nerves but whenever she does they shunt her out of the film. The mandatory cute animal sidekicks range from irritating to please make it stop.
For what it's worth, the stage adaptation exercises both animal sidekicks largely be consequence of this version trying to be more historical fiction rather than a Disney Renaissance style musical. That brings us to one of the biggest and most controversial changes in the stage version, Gleb. He's a Russian officer who is torn between his feelings for Anya and his duty to the cause. He replaced Rasputin as the main threat. With Gleb, they do rectify points 1 and 3 but this is not without losing much of the energy Rapustin injects into the piece. For all his faults, Rasputin and his weird demon things move shit from Point A to Point B while also being very entertaining at the same time. Gleb has more of a motivation than Rasputin but the story comes to a screeching halt whenever we have to focus on him. He is in love with Anya because she's hot I guess and we get so many songs of this dude belting for the gods about how much he wants her but he can't pursue her. There are a total of three songs counting reprises that are dedicated to this and they're basically all the same. Gleb wants to bone, he has daddy issues and we move on. He interacts with her more but there is no reason he should be this blue balled over a chick he does not know. Anya and Demitri still have great chemistry and the plot is reworked to give them more time together. I like their dynamic more in the film but the musical does this fine but just differently. Anya doesn't really even know Gleb nor that he wants to see if the curtains match the drapes. So we're stuck in this completely unnecessary lopsided love triangle that makes Wolverine, Scott and Jean Grey's bullshit seem like Shakespeare. There is almost zero evolution within Gleb's many croons about how much he wants to bang this chick. He comes to basically the same revelation every single time so whenever he gets a song it's basically time for a pee break. Unlike Rapustin who at least gets an entertaining last fight and death, Gleb doesn't really even get that. He corners her, she goes full on Malala and tells him to do what he's gotta do, he chickens out and dips. They try to give it some weight by having Anya comfort him but she doesn't know this man and she certainly doesn't know he's in love with her. It feels even less powerful than the original ending because at least Rasputin actually killed her family so there's some connection there. Gleb is the son of the guy who was involved so his connection to any of this is nebulous at best. Why not just make him an ex-boyfriend or orphan she grew up with? Why not actually just make him the dad Gleb keeps referring to? Rasputin actually wants her dead and the story moves mostly because of his machinations behind the scenes. Gleb feels shoehorned into this narrative and he's not even entertaining while he's there. His songs are slow, repetitive and he has no real personality.
This is not the only change they made to the story. Vlad now has a mini subplot where he's trying to get back Sophie, now named Lily. This means she's in the story a lot more than she was previously and they don't succeed in making her less annoying. In film, a character can bounce in and out of the narrative without us questioning why they're not there. Theater is a bit different because you can't really have characters that just show up and never appear again. It's been done but usually they'll have the actor play a dual role in the story as well. Lily gets a lot more to do and I'm sorry but almost every song she gets besides the one from the film are also pee break songs. Land of Yesterday just feels like a Russian version of If I Knew Then from Beetlejuice but with much less relevance to the story. The Empress also gets a song now and while it's more memorable than any of the stuff Gleb or Lily get, there's no reason for it to be there. Some composers feel the compulsion to make every single emotional beat a song and while I understand that desire, you don't need it. Honestly my first time seeing the show, I started laughing when she busted out singing because it's so random. The original film got the point across without this and the musical does not expand on her character in any way so there's nothing new to communicate here. Maybe they felt the character should sing more but even without Close the Door, she gets some parts in other songs. This is an example of the fluff I was referring to earlier.
But for everything they added, they removed a lot of stuff but tried to play it down the middle. For example, in the film Rasputin tries to get Anastasia to kill herself by giving her an enchanting dream that turns into a nightmare. Demetri saves her life, she now has learned to trust him more and we move on. In the musical, Rapustin no longer exists but the scene does in a way. Now she has a nightmare about her family being killed where she Demetri comforts her as he does before but there's no narrative reason for this scene to be here. By this point, they've had more moments to build the romantic connection so it feels redundant. They also want to give us a reason to lead into the song where they realize they both know each other and that she's really Anastasia. It's a very flimsy setup and the film did this much better by having Demetri be the one who saved her life. It also undercuts his character development by a lot. There's no scene where he rejects the money. He doesn't have a personal connection to Anya or her grandmother like he did before. His character is neutered a lot in this version and doesn't come off as selfless as he did before. He turns down the money but not only does he have less of a reason to that now, that reveal feels much less powerful. His character isn't even involved in saving her life towards the end. While they do get more time to bond in this version, I just don't feel like they added enough to justify some of these changes.
I don't quite understand why they chose to go the route of realism with the musical. Maybe they're responding to people who thought the more fantastical elements were out of place but as we can see without that, the story doesn't have much of a reason to be a musical. There's an older movie version of this story with Ingrid Bergman that hits a lot of the same beats as the 90's version. That version is decidedly not a musical and also isn't that great of a film either. This isn't the easiest story to make compelling and the 90's version threaded the needle as best as it could. By using the story of Anastasia as more of a jumping off point for the type of fairytale musical audiences had become used to, it managed to make the story more removed from the actual real life Anastasia who did in fact die, although that was not known back then. The musical leans too much into the history and it just doesn't work. There are dark shows that deal with heavy subject matter. The Color Purple is basically just Beat My Ass: The Musical. But that show isn't also trying to be a romantic whimsical experience, Anastasia very much is. I wish they had just kept Rapustin, weaved him into the story more naturally and gave him a stronger personal connection to Anastasia and kept the darker non-history related elements in the show. The movie is plenty dark at times but the history and political struggle is given a passing mention in the opening and is rarely ever brought up again unless to refer to actual murders. The musical felt like Bridge of Spies set to music with how much focus they put on the political aspect of the story. That does not mesh and I think it's part of the reason why this show doesn't have as strong of a following as the film. It's not ungodly awful, but it doesn't justify its existence.

2024.05.17 02:37 ISS600 "The Little Spitfire", a Skylanders x The Little Mermaid (1989) Crack Idea

Apparently this was too much for Reddit's spam filters, so we're doing this again.
That's right, this stupid joke has a cover image.

The Little Spitfire (Committing to the Joke)

Somewhere high above and beyond your imagination is an adventure in fantasy.
The Little Spitfire is a joke taken way too far and one that I have committed to solely for the meme. It is a Skylanders take on the story of The Little Mermaid (1989), replacing the original cast with our own flame-spirit SuperCharger Spitfire, optimistic lark Stormblade, gloomy Dreadwalker Nightfall and many more.
The Context
This joke came about while I was brainstorming cutscene dialog for a cutscene in my fan-game. This cutscene took place in an underwater kingdom and I was listening to "Under the Sea" to give some ambience. What I had come up with was that all Skylanders of all elements had been magically protected against the waters and were now swimming freely beneath the waves, making their way to an underwater palace. Spitfire and Stormblade would be chatting as they swam, with the conversion involving Spitfire expressing difficulty/confusion at swimming. Stormblade would then suggest he "does it the mermaid way" and would “demonstrate” what she meant (furiously wiggling and spasming up and down like a maniac). Spitfire would then copy her (much more fluidly and gracefully due to his merman-esque body shape). The conversation would then go as follows.
Spitfire: For some reason, I feel like I should get up on a rock and sing about being part of the world above.
The reason that the conversation would go this way is for 3 reasons:
  1. This fan-game establishes that all Skylanders are fans of Earth media and consume a lot of it. Spitfire alongside others is quite familiar with Disney movies like The Little Mermaid.
  2. The fan-game itself is very musical in its mechanics, so Spitfire having the urge to sing isn't that strange. In fact, singing is a necessary requirement for unlocking the main power in the story. Specifically, it’s working together with others and being in-sync with one another as well as being able to work in harmony that’s necessary. Singing and dancing being the easiest way to achieve that so that’s what everyone’s been doing. That's why Stormblade asks if they're going to sing later. She sees it as an offer to both have some fun and try and work together to harmonize.
  3. Spitfire is willing to humor Stormblade's optimism and slightly odd suggestions like accepting offers to sing karaoke with her or play dancing games with her. If she wants to sing and dance all silly after a mission, he’s happy to join her. It’s not his usual style, but he doesn’t mind it, plus the above reasons of harmonizing would give him good reason to do it too.
Now, I didn’t disregard this at all, because quite frankly, I like merfolk way too much and I saw Spitfire having a tail similar to them as the perfect opportunity to make the above conversation into a wonderful brick joke that still made sense in the setting (I’m imagining either a full theater production of it, or just those two singing on a rock on the beach for fun). To quote myself: “I’ll be honest, it’s the fact he doesn't have legs. I was like "yeah, I can merman this”. I mentioned this in the Portal Masters Lounge Discord server and user “Firedanne” asked the following:
“Does he dream of living up in the sky and collect raindrops and pieces of shot down planes?”
I said “no, but that’s a great idea” and quickly the two of us realized that it made a lot more sense than Spitfire being a merman under the sea (which already doesn’t make a lot of sense, full admittance). And…well, the joke went from there and it did not stop. After replaying the official soundtrack for The Little Mermaid, I decided to do it for the meme and bring you all…whatever this can be considered. Crack post, probably.

The Actual Idea

Summary: Deep inside the volcanoes of Skylands, fire-spirit Spitfire lives in a glowing arcadia of magma and flames. But Spitfire wishes to live amongst the clouds, however his father King X** forbids him from realizing his dreams. One day, after saving the life of* Y**, a creature from the air, Spitfire finds himself smitten with* Y and makes a deal with a devious deadly witch to become an Air creature and must earn Y*’s love before time runs out.* *X and Y are placeholders because I don’t actually know who will fill those positions. More on that below.
The Plot
The plot would be the movie’s plot albeit with potential for some minor modifications to it, either to be more Skylanders-y or just because. Not entirely sure but I see the plot as having the same beats and basic layout but being somewhat different in execution. It absolutely has the songs though, I’m not getting rid of that.
  • One of the most significant plot changes would be the role of Flounder if Stormblade takes that role. Stormblade would be a being of Air who would be Spitfire’s best friend and also his wingman, assisting him where necessary and such. Essentially, she’d be a much more extraverted and adventurous Flounder who’d act as Spitfire’s wingman and on-land ally (she’d be a secondary protagonist almost). Because in canon, the two get along and seem to be on friendly terms, I can imagine Stormblade as Spitfire’s good friend and the one who tells him all about the sky, brings him stuff, goes exploring with him etc. Plus, the opportunity for both to duet songs like Part of Your World and Stormblade soloing Kiss the Girl is a lot of fun to imagine.
  • After that, the rest of the plot changes would boil down to some slightly different scenes, different dialog (but with the same intentions) and so forth. Since the story would take place in the sky, the setting would also be different, but that wouldn’t really affect things all that much aside from some wording changes.
The Characters
Here’s the current cast list as it stands. The question marks mean I don’t know if that person I picked really fits at all, but it also means I don’t know who would be in that role at all.
The Little Spitfire Cast
Ariel Spitfire
Flounder ?
Sebastian Dive-Clops?
Scuttle Smash Hit?
Prince Eric (Y) ?
King Triton (X) ?
Ursula Nightfall
Spitfire would be a flame spirit prince who lives beneath the surface in a massive volcanic kingdom. This is to keep his “no legs, merman tail” thing; now he has a reason to swim everywhere and also explains why as a flame spirit, he can’t simply fly upwards (and on that note, he doesn’t have his wings either, or his technical enhancements; he is pure fire and rock-body). He is stuck underground, but sneaks above onto the surface to explore and collect things that fall from the sky, birdwatch etc. He’d go to the witch and that’s where he’d get his wings and tech enhancement, but of course, he’d give up his voice and have the “get a kiss before 3 days is up” condition.
Now, here’s where it gets tricky for me. On the one hand, I could make Stormblade the Eric of the story (so she would be the Y character) and it would work perfectly fine. But on the other hand, I’ve also got another role for her, an expanded-upon version of Flounder’s role as detailed above and that also works perfectly. Both options for her work out really well because her canon relationship with Spitfire makes her ideal for both positions (as detailed in the plot section). I’m torn about what to do with her because if not her, I don’t know who would be the Eric role. It could be a man or a woman, but I’ve got no clue who I’d pick. I know who I wouldn’t want, but the elimination game hasn’t been super helpful.
The easiest role to choose however is definitely Nightfall as Ursula. She’s a Dreadwalker, she’s got the spooky colors, she’s menacing-looking, she has the tentacled hair and she absolutely would kill it singing “Poor Unfortunate Souls”. And while she’s not evil in personality, her personality would make her a more believable Ursula in comparison to say, Splat. Nightfall being of the Dark element also helps; she’s opposite to bright fire and daylight.
The roles of Sebastian and Scuttle were also OK to come up with, but I’m not too sure about them all. I went with Smash Hit for Scuttle because he’s a rather weird fellow, so he fits with Scuttle’s rather strange self. Dive-Clops is Sebastian solely because he’s the smallest of the cast (I’m talking about him suitless, mind you) and I thought it would be hilarious to put him in a crab costume, or something like that. However, neither of them are Fire or Air elementals, so in the context of the story, it doesn’t make all that much sense.
The role of King Triton is completely up in the air. I have no idea who could, would or should be in his role in the slightest. I know it should probably be a Fire elemental, I just don’t know who. The role of Eric is also unknown for reasons detailed in Stormblade’s entry above. I don’t have a set person at all; the closest I got to someone who wasn’t Stormblade is Ka-Boom and that was for a joke where Ka-Boom auditions and Spitfire struggles to drag him places, and also gets crushed underneath him because of size differences (to me, Ka-Boom look bigger than pretty much every Skylander by a large margin). It was not a serious consideration at all, full disclosure. I don’t have a serious consideration for Eric except for maybe Stormblade as discussed above.
The Music
I’m weak and I always make playlists and this joke is no exception.
  • Fathoms Below: Opening song. Would need to be changed to be fire-related.
  • Part of Your World: Sung by Spitfire (maybe Stormblade too, depends on her role). Would have to be air-related, not water-related.
  • Under the Sea: Sung by whoever ends up being Sebastian. Also would have to be fire-related, not water-related.
  • Part of Your World (Reprise): Sung by Spitfire and no one else.
  • Poor Unfortunate Souls: Sung by Nightfall.
  • Kiss the Girl: Sung by whoever ends up being Sebastian or by Stormblade, depending on her role.
And that's it. That's the entire thing. If anyone has suggestions for roles, throw them at me because I am out of ideas entirely. Completely out of ideas.

2024.05.15 02:11 forzamaria Favourite last 5/10 seconds outro of songs?

Sounds a weird question but I really love when a song ends with a outro that fades out with a last few chords or something different. It's like ending the song triumphantly or on a cliffhanger
Examples:
Beyonce - I Care (la la la la la outro, if you listen carefully the pitch of the last la la goes higher)
Kesha - Supernatural (few seconds of piano)
Spice Girls - 2 Become 1 (it gets that haunting bass and fades out)
Lana Del Rey - Flipside (the guitar gets all twangy and I love it)
Utada Hikaru - Kimi Ni Michu (she sounds like Ariel from Little Mermaid with those harmonies whilst AG Cook's instrumental goes hard)
Troye Sivan - Dance to this ft. Ariana Grande (when you hear them both duetting for the last few seconds as it fades out)
Charli XCX - Gone (can't explain it but I love it)
Thanks guys sorry if I haven't explained it well, hopefully the examples help lol.

2024.05.11 06:08 Significant-Alarm835 The Tangled ride is gorgeous, but the storytelling is lacking.

Don’t get me wrong, the animatronics are astounding and so life-like, and the visuals are stunning. But what upsets me is that there’s only about 4 scenes in total: Flynn discovering the tower, the “Best Day Ever”, the Healing incarnation, and “I see the light”, followed by the unloading area.
I was anticipating for a scene with “Mother know’s best” and an animatronic of Gothel, but judging by the full ride footage released, said scene was not realised. I also wished for a scene with Rapunzel reuniting with her birth parents, or perhaps a kingdom dance, but the ride just ends after the lanterns.
Same thing happened with Beauty and the Beast which skips the climatic battle scene and no Gaston in sight. The Ariel ride also omits the giant Ursula battle.
While rides like Snow White’s Scary Adventures/Enchanted Wish and Pinocchio’s Daring Journey are smaller scale with less technical advantages, the narrative felt more compelling and incorporated many sequences from their respective movies.
What do you guys think?

2024.05.10 09:27 avatar__of__chaos Disney Princesses as Taylor Swift's Tortured Poets Department songs

  1. Snow White: Fresh Out the Slammer
The song is about someone who falls for someone right after they broke up, but I think it suits her since she ran away from her kingdom. "Now pretty baby I'm running back home to you, Fresh out the slammer I know who my first call would be to"
  1. Cinderella: ThanK you aIMee
The song is about being angry but thankful to their bully. "But when I count the scars there's a moment of truth, that there wouldn't be this if there hadn't been you"
  1. Aurora: Guilty as Sin
It's an adult version of Once Upon a Dream basically. "I keep recalling things we never did"
  1. Ariel: But Daddy I Love Him
The title speaks for itself. "Now I'm dancing in my dress in the sun and even my daddy just loves him. I'm his lady."
  1. Belle: I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)
The very obvious choice. "Good boy, that's right. I'll show you heaven if you'll be an angel all night. Trust me I can handle me a dangerous man."
  1. Jasmine: Down Bad
This is probably for the middle part of the story. "Show me this world is bigger than us, then sent me back where I came from. For a moment I knew cosmic love."
  1. Pocahontas: loml
Kinda describing the very short time of Pocahontas and John Smith being together. "If you know it in one glimpse, it's legendary. What we thought was for all time, was momentary."
  1. Mulan: The Albatross
Albatrosses are considered bad omens by sailors but are extremely loyal. Mulan was outcasted once they found out she was a woman in disguise but she still try to save the country. "So I crossed my thoughtless heart, spred my wings like a parachute. I'm the albatross, I swept in at the rescue."
  1. Tiana: I Can Do It With a Broken Heart
I know this song is about still pretending to be fine after a break up for professionalism, but I feel like Tiana could fit this song too. "I cry a lot but I am so productive it's an art. You know you good when you can even do it with a broken heart."
  1. Rapunzel: My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys
Since Eugene was once a criminal. "I felt more when we played pretend, than with all the kens cause he took me out of my box."
  1. Merida and Moana: Robin
Feels very 'keep it up and chase your dream' vibe. "Long may you roar, at your dinosaurs. You're a just ruler covered in mud."
  1. Raya: Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?
Has a lot of rage and vengeance. "So I leapbfrom the gallows and I levitate down your street, crash the party like a record scratch as I scream."
  1. Anna: imgonnagetyouback
Probably just for one verse in the chorus though. "Whether I'm gonna curse you out or take you back to my house, I haven't decided yet. But I'm gonna get you back." The rest is more for anger towards a bad lover more than a sister gone rogue lol.
  1. Elsa: The Prophecy
"Please, I've been on my knees. Change the prophecy. Don't want money, just someone who wants my company."
  1. Wendy: Peter
Obviously."You said you were gonna grow up, then you were gonna come find me"
  1. Esmeralda: Cassandra
"So they set my life in flames I regret to say. Do you believe me now? They knew the whole time that I knew something. The family, the pure greed, the Christian chorus line. They all said nothing."

2024.05.07 23:35 Xezzos Shadow Citadel - idk what is this, leaks or smth idgf

Summoning her strongest sword [Stealer of souls] Nephis took a step forward to make distance with her group. The steed and the taciturn statue moved to the back of the the courtyard while the lord of shadows moved further back, inviting Nephis to take the space given.
Looking at her memory, she became strangely wistful. It was a memory given to her by someone precious to her, but she did not recall their name or their voice, not even an image. But she did know that it made her stronger. ‘I’ll conquer everything with you by my side’ she thought, taking another step forward.
Wondering how the duel would start, a suddenly loud clang echoed through the cavern. The taciturn devil had hit her shield with her sword, apparently signalling the start of their duel. Entering a state of clarity, Nephis analysed her opponent. ‘No openings’. Then, the lord of shadows moved with frightening speed. Using his odachi he went for a sideway slash towards her neck. Moving her sword to the left side, both swords collided before the sword could reach her neck. Not stopping, both immediately got intertwined with neither gaining the upper hand.
‘This.. seems strangely familiar, like I’m fighting someone I’ve fought before.’ With their clash continuing, Nephis used her sword style that was passed down in her family to adapt and copy that of her opponent… only there was nothing to copy or adapt to. ‘He’s using the same style as me’ she realized. In the next moment, a memory popped up in her mind. She saw herself sitting on the edge of a platform talking with someone… the person was blurry, she couldn’t recognize who it was, but there was a feeling in her chest that she hadn’t felt in years.
Having gotten distracted by the memory, she received a kick to the chest, sending her flying backwards through the courtyard. ‘That hurts… that’s definitely the power of a saint’ she thought to herself. Getting up, she shook off the weird feelings she had and turned her attention back on the Lord of shadows.
He wasn’t moving, which seemed odd. ‘I don’t understand him. Why a duel, why give up on the advantage of his surrounding and his superior firepower…’
“Is that all you got?” he called out… or so she would have thought, but the voice came from all around her, echoing through the cavern.
Nephis didn’t let those words get to her. Dashing forward, she met his blade in the middle of the courtyard once more, clashing back and forth. Their duel looked more like a beautiful dance, a perfect match in flow and movement. It was easy to get mesmerized by their fight, if it wasn’t for the sound of clashing steel.
Getting out of their stalemate, Nephis landed a hit with her elbow and pushed her opponent back and then pressed forward, trying to capitalized on it. However, it was a bait, before she could realize that the shadow lord had allowed her to land that hit, he took the momentum of the hit and spun around lowered himself to the ground and used his right leg to knock her off her feet. Nephis dodged the initial sweep by jumping, but he carried the momentum with himself for another spin around his own axis and used his left leg to land a hit on her stomach, sending her flying through the air.
Centering herself mid flight, she allowed herself to land on her legs some distance away from him. ‘I’m getting distracted… why can I not focus? Why am I emotional. Me? Emotional?’ looking up again, she saw the shadow lord again in the same spot, standing still, waiting for her.
‘Is he mocking me?’ There was still no dent on his armor… his armor?
Another memory flash in her mind, this one more detailed than the other. She saw herself in someone’s home, watching a clip of a dream scape tournament on her communicator . Then she got interrupted by someone who came into the house but… once again, she couldn’t recall who or what it was.
‘Nonsense, I’ve accepted this. I’ve come to terms with the feeling of having lost a part of myself in the 3rd nightmare. What or whoever it was that was with me at the time, they’re long gone. Not even Cassie has managed to unravel the secret of this.’
Taking a deep breath, she called herself back to reality. But it was too late. Having noticed the absent mind of Changing Star, the Shadow Lord sprung forward, disarming her and pinning her to the ground. He was looking at her through the mask, an eerie feeling overtaking her. Words and memories started to bubble up but she didn’t care. She had agreed to not use her flaw for this match, but that didn’t matter anymore. She hated being weak, she hated the fact that he seemingly didn’t fight with the intent someone should fight with. Combat was about the essence and the intent to murder after all. Resolving herself to burn away all convoluted thoughts, the mask of the shadow lord suddenly vanished, leaving behind a face of a young, handsome man, with raven black hair and onyx eyes.
“You agreed to not use your aspect, Nephis, don’t hurt yourself.” The young man called out. Stunned by the change of the fearsome mask to the unassuming, stupidly handsome face beneath it, Nephis got overwhelmed immediately as emotions, memories and words started to enter her mind and chest in a ranging storm.
‘Odysseus’ she thought, not trying to struggle against the iron grip he had on her. She resigned herself to what was happening, trying to understand each and every image flashing in her mind. The forgotten shore, the crimson spire, a duel to the death, a desert and blurry runes. A dream which was visited, an underground dojo that she trained in, the mask and the armor - dreamscape. Outing with the cohort and a 5th person being part of it.
A ball, a dance, a conversation in a kitchen with a person that pulled on her heart strings. Ivory tower and sorrow, despair and relieve, Antarctica, colossal war alongside someone, the words “I have something to confess, I love you” resounded in her mind in her own voice. Back in the desert, waking up to a blurry person caring for her. The Tomb, the turtle, spending time with someone she couldn’t recall. Her heart was aching, tears started to form, threatening to spill over onto her beautiful face. A fierce battle she felt powerless in, watching from the side line scared to death yelling “please don’t die”, fallen grace and Cassie, once more someone was there with her, like a shadow without form or voice.
Aletheia Island and a scorched bedroom. Battle of twilight and a voice filled with madness, yet no sound could be recalled. Verge… her heart hurt. It was unlike any other pain she had ever felt. She would rather go through a thousand battles like Twilight instead of feeling this unbearable pain inside her chest. The loss of someone, it felt like she could finally put her finger on it.
She had tried to recall those memories, training herself to not forget when she tried to think of the person. The cohort was different, something felt off after the 3rd nightmare. It took time to settle in but once it had, it felt like part of her was gone. Then the mysterious exploration report came out about the tomb of Ariel that none of them had written… it was all starting to make sense. The overwhelming sense of loss she felt right now, looking at the shadow lords face… there was an uncanny familiarity she felt towards that face that she has never felt before… or had forgotten how it felt. The concern that was displayed on his face made her heart ache even more… They say that the eyes are the window to the soul of a person, and what she saw was unbearable. It was nothing but pain and sorrow, despite the strength they displayed, there was a subtle brokenness to them, an unspeakable amount of regret lingered in those eyes as they were scanning her face. In the next moment, he wiped off her tears with his fingers, having let go of his grip on her arms.
Without much thought Nephis pulled the lord of shadows into a hug and whispered: Welcome home.

2024.05.05 15:32 LumpyMasterpiece2111 Lost my invert after a few months off, any tips to get my strength back?

Hii, slightly devastated but I was well into intermediate, had my jade split, had my Ariel invert, I could do a bracket grip airwalk, but after nesting and a lot of work chaos for about 4 months I’ve been barley dancing and I’ve lost my invert from the ground even. Also I’ve picked up a few extra kg’s so I’m guessing that’s why my body is like what the heck.
Has this happened to anyone else here and do yall have any tips to help get back on track?
Thank you so much!

2024.04.24 09:17 Longjumping_Echo1023 Sunny's Transformation versatility

Sunny is going to be able to make his transformation even more OP once he masters it.
Sunny can basically become the equivalent of a swiss army knife.
We already saw how important adaptability and utility is even compared to raw power.
My theory is that Sunny will be able to control how many shadows he intends to make autonomous thus also having the option of augmenting himself, his shadows or his weapons.
Let's acknowledge that after soul weave Sunny has the largest pool of essence. Since even among divine aspect holders with more than one core, his essence is more potent and replenishes faster.
He also has the means to create memories that further increase these stats, like crown of dawn and the tunic, so it wouldn't be a problem to divide it even between seven "saints".
And it is almost guaranteed that all of them can access his memories.
Just imagine the implications of this.
At any given moment, anywhere safe, with enough materials, our lad could set up a secured camp and with 6 helpers capable of weaving and casting shadow hands, weave 7 tunics or siege souvenirs, he is basically a mobile memory factory.
Or if it is possible for his shadows to benefit from the effects of say the mirror, he could make a stockpile of them and have the ability at any given moment to make a cohort with the perfect aspects to defeat a given opponent.
And imagine the schemes he could pull off with shadow incarnation and visual memories He could cosplay as any person he has seen and even immitate his aspect with the mirror, even several. I am not sure there will be times for schemes with the events that are about to unfold but still.
And remember how Sunny as a master managed to slay the cohorts of both song and anvil. Now imagine that times 7, if the enchantments of tunics stack then imagine that times ??, since the tunic further increases the multi threading capacity of the brain with the blessing of mind.
His control over a battlefield now would be insane. Remember how during the Antarctica campaign, during skirmishes he would stay in the shadows and assist the army with shadow manifestation. And how Morgan would monitor the situation from a fortress with Cassie.
Now Sunny can do that himself.
1st stays in the sadows and monitors the battlefield.
2nd stays back and uses range attacks, say with a new aoe memory.
3rd uses Shadow shell and transforms into a butterfly or dragon giving aerial superiority.
4th becomes the shadow spawn and goes berserk breaking any formation.
5th is an assassin, taking care of the most dangerous threats, using shadow step wherever the monitoring shadow tells him.
6th could become a giant turtle similar to the one in the tomb of Ariel or any other giant creature to be a hard to get past obstacle.
7th could just be used as a walking power up for whoever needs it or anything else really, why not any other transformation for even more dps, a walking medic that uses the charges from dying wish on others, or it could play the flute and bring back the dead or since it could be forever silent give commands to saints and masters out of nowhere disrupting any teamwork and creating openings.
How about an innocent looking crow flying around the battlefield, giving precious intel, that can be transfered to other people via mind link with the tunic (G3 please bring back the tunic,it was so op) and then suddenly the crow flies high into the sky and plunges back at mach 3 then before impact turns into "the largest creature imaginable" that also has its weight further increased by the mantle) flattening everything and everyone, and one shadow can do this however many times in a row, good luck defending against such an opponent. And unlike Nephis, Sunny doesn't need to sacrifice his cores to become the equivalent of a repeatable nuke.
Or it could use the serpent to replenish essence for the team. The possibilities are endless.
Can't afford to divide essence into 7 pools ? Make a strike team of 3 augmented shadows.
Need more aoe ? Split into 7 and go crazy with the shadow hands, spikes.
And we haven't even factored in the echoes, and the fact that Sunny will most likely learn how to make them.
Can you imagine how scary this would be for a legacy clan?
How many saints were before ? A dozen? Now after transcending humanity got 7 saints in one.
Imagine being the head of a clan sitting in your little citadel when suddenly a nightmare creature the size of small town falls on your castle, in the ensuing chaos most of your foot soldiers get slaughtered simultaneously because sunny found out where they are beforehand and hid in all the right places.
And remember how Sunny experimented with storage memories? And how he already achieved a storage space that can be inhabited by living beings, the drawback being that there is no air or a pleasant environment like in the locket ? Oh well now imagine having your citadel be invaded by a horde of nightmare creatures sunny caught in those storage memories(corrupted creatures don't need air)(and sunny could craft more than one) From seven different points, good luck responding to that in time, saints or no saints.
And if things get too heated he can just gather his shadows and dip by transforming into 7 crows and flying into different directions,or gather his shadows and shadow step away and repeat everything tomorrow or a year later.
Even if I was a sovereign I wouldn't want Sunny as my enemy.
Also something interesting is can one of the Shadows go to the dream realm while others stay in the waking world?
That could also be insane, and pretty funny if one version of Sunny could just stay in the real tomb of Ariel where there is always dusk or twilight and just wear the crown and using the serpent to coil his essence, infinite essence glitch.
PS: I remembered how Sunny and Nephis defeated Dire Fang by dismantling his style together.
Now Sunny could fight someone one on one and have his transformation on unbeknownst to his opponent( and you just know he will try to hide his transformation from everyone, to keep it as a trump card) And have his shadows work on dismantling the opponents technique
So his transformation can be used with shadow dance to understand opponents' techniques faster.

2024.04.23 04:06 Intrepid-Antelope Best Tango Movies?

My wife and I are coming back to tango now that our children are old enough to be safe at home on their own. We’re taking classes and enjoying dancing again, and we were thinking that it would be fun to watch some good movies centered around tango.
I remember watching and enjoying The Tango Lesson (1997) when I first started dancing. I also found a post on this forum from a few months ago about Ariel Back To Buenos Aires (2022), which looks promising.
What are your favorites? If you had to choose one movie — made anywhere in the world, either old or new — that best captures what you love about this dance, what would it be?
EDIT: Thanks for the suggestions! I've gathered them together into an IMDB list.
The list now has 19 movies on it, arranged in chronological order. I'll keep adding to it if there are more comments in this thread.

2024.04.20 04:39 FellowTraveller7 But Daddy I Love Him song reminds me of the original Footloose movie

The first time I heard "But Daddy I Love Him", I thought of Ariel (the main character) from the original Footloose movie. I'm sure this wasn't intentional at all.
Ren, the guy who Ariel goes out with, was considered "crazy" by the little town Ariel was from. He was considered a bit of a troublemaker, since he was outspoken and was sometimes in the wrong place at the right time. Ariel was considered a "dutiful daughter" by her dad until she admitted to him that she wasn't a virgin. The lyrics "soon enough the elders had convened down at the City Hall" also reminds me of when Ren went to the city hall to try to get a dance going in the little town.
Did anyone else think of Footloose or is it just me?

2024.04.20 02:48 meaningfullmin Trip Report (April 12th-17th) Wilderness Lodge.

I found these posts super helpful when researching and planning our trip and figured I'd give one a shot here! We had a blast throughout our trip and some of the details are below.
The resort: -I can't recommend the Wilderness Lodge enough. It was all of ours first trip to Disney so we decided to do a deluxe resort. We ended up doing a two queen bed fireworks view room. It did not disappoint. We were 5th floor witn the castle dead center to our balcony. Watching the fireworks every night at 845 was amazing with a cup of coffee and the kids with a snack -The pools at Wilderness were great. The main pool right near the bar and grill was well looked after by life guards and never overly crowded. The bison burger from geyser was one of the better food items I had while I was there. -The theming is amazing and the geyser going off throughout the day was great for the kids. The s'mores at night was also a big hit. -Food options were very good as well. We had DDP and the first night there we did Artisan Point and while all the characters were great, the evil queen was fantastic with my older one. Huge props to her. The prime rib was great but definitely not as hefty as advertised. The apps were small, but good, and the desserts were hit or miss. We did breakfast at whispering canyon and the all you can eat skillet was great. The servers were in their bag of tricks at 8am gotta give them credit. -Only negative from the resort was the room bathroom did have some mold above the ceiling in the shower area. It was brought up and quickly cleaned, but just something that came up.
The Parks: While it may go against normal convention for some we ranked the parks in this order 1) AK 2) Epcot 3) MK 4) HS
AK: The kids are huge animal fans and man did they enjoy doing the Wilderness explorer hunt, the safari, and the river rapids. They loved the bird show, and getting to meet Moana was a huge hit for them. My older (7) daughter did Mt.Everest as well. It scared her but she did it and was super proud. A great ride. The Lion King show was also a major hit, while the bugs life show was a bit of a miss. The spiders sent my little ones into a tizz lol.
We ended up doing Tusker House for dinner and enjoyed the buffet style eating and the characters here were all great. Goofy was the most interactive and best with the kids, but all fantastic. Food was good, enjoyed the shaving table options and the curry the most. Everything else was just OK for us.
Epcot: My kids love aquariums and fish so the Nemo ride and talking with crush were great. My older daughter also got to be a bit in the spotlight and got picked out to talk to Crush was a great moment. Ton of great character meet and greets throughout the day. The water journey inspired by Moana is fantastic for kids. We ended up going through probably 3 times. We also did the imagination ride and got to meet Joy after which went over well.
We did Shiki Sai for dinner and was a great experience. The bento boxes for the kids were perfectly sized and had a ton of food for a good value at Disney (20), and my wife and I got the sushi bridge which was really good sushi. A great experience and would highly recommend if you enjoy sushi.
We also did Ohana for breakfast for the lilo and stitch meet and greet, and loved it. The all you can eat breakfast was good, but the little dance party they do and the characters made the experience worth it. The Polynesian looks beautiful the little we explored it.
MK: Another day filled with great character meet and greets. We did the Belle show which was fantastic as you get to meet her at the end. A small world was a classic and while maybe not the most exciting ride something about it just felt right. We did the buzz arcade game ride which both kids got a kick out of. All of our favorites was Monsters Inc Laugh Floor, was a great time. It's tough putting MK here at 3, but it might just be since Mt Everest scared the older one we didn't get to do any of the bigger rides after the first day of the trip lol.
We used the DDP for Cinderallas castle for dinner, and really enjoyed it. The server was fantastic. We had a sear right by one of the windows, and the princesses were all amazing. We ended up with Jasmine, Ariel, Merida, Aurora, and met Cinderella before the dinner.
HS: I think this park is just geared a bit more towards adults generally, but the kids really enjoyed the Toy Story Land area. The arcade style ride there was another nice score for the kids, we did the saucer ride, and slinky dog dash. I'm a huge star wars fan but didn't get to spend a ton of time in Galaxy's edge as it wasn't the kids vibe and vader gave them the creeps.
We did do the Toy Story BBQ for dinner and it's a neat atmosphere and the whole freeze when Andy comes around was a great thing for the kiddos. The food is OK and all you can say so that's something to look for, but if your a big BBQ guy or gal or from a heavy BBQ area you'd be disappointed.
It was an absolutely amazing 5 days and we wish it could have been longer. We will probably take the kids back in about 4 or 5 years when they are a bit older and may enjoy some of the larger rides, but we made really amazing family memories this trip. We didn't do much resort hoping and didn't do any resort only days which I think I'd add on any future trips if nothing else just to give yourselves a break.
Hope everyone has a magical time coming up here in the future, and look forward to planning another trip another 4 years from now unless Disney opens up the planning windows :D.

2024.04.13 19:04 TokyoDisney_stuffs an adorable introduction of character greeting 1

an adorable introduction of character greeting 1
I will list and translate some cute videos here as proof of what i wrote in the boring introduction and maybe as some suggestions to newbies:))
For those who aren't going, i hope you to get healed by some TDR magic✨
i want this pic to be the first thing you guys see!!
so cute:))

  1. some unique photo ideas
I first read about the following 2 ideas from this blog
https://disneyiroha.com/character-free/#ng

I did not know that selfies could be this cute😆
But this photo is from official website according to the blog so IDK if it's ok to ask the character to take a selfie by herself/himself since you know they have to act that they know nothing about modern technology.
https://preview.redd.it/4sow1zrkr8uc1.png?width=695&format=png&auto=webp&s=dee913da33832766efa90ef8e6dc91e578e9c8eb
Here's a selfie example i googled online:)
https://note.com/nummhachi/n/n02bdd293ddd3
https://preview.redd.it/ev67xap8s8uc1.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=90a270067f1d6328b9d01b6db811772586e7a9a7
You can take a picture FOR the character and ask them to sign on it after printing it!!
https://preview.redd.it/493jxhq7t8uc1.png?width=695&format=png&auto=webp&s=07608840851fb009b364c11d0cf6fd2965e43051

An example i screenshotted from this video
https://youtu.be/-3JgJbe-2AM

OR you could ask the character to sign on your tablet directly using stylus pen!!
(in my opinion cellphones might be too small for them to sign)
I learned this tip from this video
plz note that the youtuber did mention to the staff that his favor was special beforehand so maybe ask first.
https://youtu.be/cR5aVvNm2vE
https://preview.redd.it/l8jpzqxtt8uc1.png?width=2680&format=png&auto=webp&s=36c6c17e12b54cad37ea34f892c09477794b9b48
2.some unique signatures
There are 2 places where you can get your silhouette cut out in TDR
https://www.tokyodisneyresort.jp/en/tds/shop/detail/634/
https://www.tokyodisneyresort.jp/en/tdl/shop/detail/510/

and they both sell mickey shaped frame

which is a perfect signing material!!
i learned this tip when googling pics
https://preview.redd.it/nubro8lvn9uc1.jpg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=56f3d582b5e85072f24fb71724d1d797160ab558

this flag is from the 40th anniversary of TDL so u may not be able to buy it now in the parks.
i wanted to mention it bc this WASN'T love at first sight xd
i only figured out the charm after my 3rd try😂
(sorry but the video is removed on youtube but i'll paste the link here anyway)
(thank god i saved the screenshoots)

3.the lonely bare-faced characters
As i said in my previous posts, they are very ''lonely'' due to the language barrier.
But even when facing japanese who doesn't understand them, they still mumble away.
An example of mumbling away,
it's really sweet to see aladdin and jasmine babble away then congratulate the pregnant couples even though they only managed to say one word (baby)
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/FSAQvWqmZGA
https://preview.redd.it/n9lkgpc8x9uc1.png?width=1105&format=png&auto=webp&s=354d6cb73ac1837258bc8fda431464b6b95c1a94
As for this Flynn, i was moved and felt sorry for him when he ''wasted'' his smolder to someone who does not seem to understand him.
I didn't not expect him, a non-celebrity, to be able to pull off the look but oh my god!!
I was shocked and so happy to see how crooked and naive he was and made me want to punch him in the face😂😂😂
(pardon me for my negative use of words but i truly think it as a pity🥲)
(how i wish someone who gets his joke is there to appreciate this and to warm him up!)
https://youtu.be/eQQIwT4a6IQ?si=-onkkKAtP-ZlL6R_&t=1259

https://preview.redd.it/psedod7ut9uc1.jpg?width=438&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9523d15f448851861898c767cae9fbc60e73f057

from the same video, magical twirls!
in love with sleeping beauty's posture!
https://preview.redd.it/l9cb2r7hv9uc1.jpg?width=596&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bd44ac352e334518c9cd9af2d1643f3169fe9900
Believe me, the bare-faced characters would be beyond happy if english speakers approach them!!
Here's an example:
this youtuber speaks fluent english!! and here's a video of him meeting up with bare-faced characters
(note: the ariel greeting attraction is no longer available)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtWKxAD11jg

Like snow white.
Boy he just said hello to snow and the prince was more than eager to engage into their conversation😂
https://preview.redd.it/37b5lxh1y9uc1.png?width=2031&format=png&auto=webp&s=15d23a44ad91002bc70ac1d113cace4c880d2264

and they made the youtuber to dance like a pirate since he was dressed as one🤡😂❤️
https://preview.redd.it/4uwn66e7y9uc1.png?width=2451&format=png&auto=webp&s=e5bdf73c3e823e5396322c2ba18830c16b03a4f6

and when he asked to see inside flynn's satchel!!
I have not had a chance to meet them in person yet but man i wailed 😭❤️‍🔥
https://preview.redd.it/mbl6vdvny9uc1.png?width=1686&format=png&auto=webp&s=5aed1a7e9a61b629d36806ddeef701b2029b9c49

and the sweet sweet prince phillip!!
the youtuber's tone was unsure so he hinted indirectly that he's aurora's prince to prevent the youtuber from embarrassment of not recognizing him.
then the prince was teased😗 i mean just leave this kind prince alone mate😂
https://preview.redd.it/nyhddnwkz9uc1.png?width=2103&format=png&auto=webp&s=cd30bbda3212a0e18fc899483bc7684765071764

to be continued!!
(donald giving out pretty flowers he picked from the garden behind him)
(unfortunately i don't remember which youtube video this was)
