2024.05.18 18:14 bznein Hybrid Work/Home/Gaming PC Build - 3000 Euros

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using
Three use cases, in order from highest to lowest priority:
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
3000 Euros, and I'd like to get as close as possible to it.
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
I plan to order the parts this weekend, next week at most, and build ASAP.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Everything except mouse/keyboard. I do have a monitor already but I'd like to add at least another 27inches one. However, if this means sacrificing the build, I can delay the purchase of a monitor to later in the year.
If possible, two different lists with and without monitor would be much appreciated.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
Ireland.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
I have a 32 inch monitor (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01NBH7IW2), a cheap logitech keyboard and a tecknet vertical mouse (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B089N996BZ).
Since I don't plan to play any FPS/RTS or similar games, I think I am happy with not buying a better keyboard/mouse.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
No interest in overclocking.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Definitely an SSD. I do have external hard drives for storage, but at least 2T of storage would be good.
I'd really appreciate any effort on having a PC as silent as possible.
A WiFi card would be appreciated, but not 100% necessary (I am working on getting wired connection to my home office, I'd just have to prioritize)
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Nothing in particular.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
No need.

2024.05.18 17:08 _lvl5 Frustrating iPhone Restore: No Option to Use Mobile Data, No Status Updates, Stuck Waiting!

TLDR: My iPhone stopped working for no reason, had to restore it. Backup can ONLY be downloaded over WIFI (there is no option for it), and my iPhone does not tell me a damn thing what it is currently doing. I am waiting that "something" happens, so I can use my phone again...
Today I woke up to see that my iPhone 11 Pro only shows the apple logo  , like it's booting up. After a while, nothing changed so I started to wonder, what happened here. As of my knowledge I did not allow the iPhone to auto update (only download), so some sort of "crash" must have happened. Well, now having an iPhone that is useless left me worried what I should do. Quick Google search revealed I should put it in recovery mode. Funny enough, recovery mode only appears when the iPhone is plugged in (outlet or mac doesn't make a difference), when it's not plugged in, the apple logo stays forever or disappears for a brief moment to come back a few seconds later. After I connected it to my mac, the finder opens, saying the iPhone is recovery mode and what I want to do, update or restore (deleting all data). I tried updating to keep my data, first attempt appeared to have some kind of time out because it downloaded iOS to slow?!, second attempt with faster network gave me an error message, which I could not make any sense of. So I was left with the restore option to freshly install iOS on my iPhone and erase all my data, that's not really a problem, because I had a backup from yesterday. This finally worked, after half an hour, I could enter the home screen. The restore process takes time, it said it has to download a little bit over 100 gigabyte, fine. Now comes the part, that really pisses me off. I had to leave the comfort of my WIFI, because I had an appointment. With no apps at all (except those which come per default), I left home, hoping that iOS would restore a few apps over time. After I checked it tells me, that a restore only can use WIFI to download my backup, I know this is to "protect" me, so I don't use all my data, to this point I can understand it, but what I really, really dislike is, that I do not have any option to say that I am fine using mobile data to restore my iphone. I have a provider where I don't have any data limits, so let me restore my iphone on the go!!! Apple does not allow you to set this manually, it just assumes, you only want to use WIFI for this... Now a few hours later, I am using a hotspot from a friend of mine to be able to download at least a few essential apps I need (password manager to start with...), but it appears to be "stuck", maybe it is fetching data in the background, maybe not. Apple does not tell you if it is doing anything, not even a spinning thing or similar. This approach is fine, if it always works as intended, but for troubleshooting, it is catastrophic, I know it's nothing new from apple that they don't tell you anything, but come on...
Well, here I am sitting on my mac typing this post, hoping my iPhone will download some apps.
Sorry for the rant.. I am super annoyed by this, because I don't know whats going on with my device. (I am a software engineer, so I have some sort of understanding tech...)
(excuse my english, it's not my native language)

2024.05.18 16:58 stavsss Graphics card fan is spinning but no display

Hey, I have a system with 2 GPUs - 1 is the an RTX 2060 Super and the other is a GT 1030. The system has a dual boot of macOS and Windows so the GT 1030 is being used only for macOS yet the RTX 2060 Super is being used for Windows.
I tried to boot the computer but there was no display. Attempted to boot my system with only 1 GPU at a time, tested the system just with the RTX 2060 Super and it posts just fine. However, when I boot my system with just the GT 1030 it wouldn't post anything on the screen.
I also plugged the GT 1030 into another system I have and I had no display again. The GPU fan spins but I just get no display on 2 different systems, so I figured out I will just ask here whether you think the GPU is dead or not and whether I can save it for my hackintosh or just replace it with a new graphics card.
P.S: The GT 1030 was working just fine until today.

2024.05.18 16:32 Cavatappi_Papi What's Going on with MacArthur? (Or: The NRHA Owns Too Much Land)

Hi Folks,
I read through yesterday's discussion about why McArthur Mall is going to take years to be re-developed, and I wanted to offer my insight here, so people can be better aware of what exactly the situation with MacArthur Mall is, and why it has been such a struggle to have it re-developed.
Norfolk (Through the NRHA) Owns the Land Underneath the Mall
What many people don't realize, is that the City of Norfolk (through the NRHA) actually owns the dirt underneath the Mall.
Before the City bought the Mall, The NRHA (Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority) leased the land to the Mall developer over a very long time, and the mall developer paid the NRHA rent, and pay taxes based on the value of the Mall building. So when the City "bought" MacArthur, it only purchased the building, since it already owned the land.
Why Did the City Do this?
From the City's perspective, having control as Landlord over this land enables the City/NRHA to have complete control over what gets built there. Say you want a mall built, well- there you have it! From the City's perspective, this also ensures that developers do not do something like, turn an empty lot into a parking lot, or something like that.
The NRHA / the City of Norfolk also owns the land underneath Waterside, Harbor Park, and of course all of the many parking garages downtown, as well as St. Paul's, Tidewater Gardens, etc., which probably accounts for about 40% of all of Downtown commercial space.
So What Exactly Did the New Announcement Mean?
What the new MacArthur Announcement was was essentially an "RFP" (Request for Proposal). The City will entertain proposals from other developers to build the City's vision for the new MacArthur space.
Why Will it Take So Long to be Redeveloped?
As you can imagine, it is a huge business risk for a developer to take on a big project such as that. Construction costs, but also the costs to get approvals, meet zoning requirements, etc. can really run up the costs for developers, but at the end of the day, Developers make money based on the value of the land they buy and the buildings they build.
In this case, however, the developer would only own the building. It would not be able to own the land underneath it, which can be a huge source of wealth (as any wealthy homeowner can attest).
Further, since the City owns the land, it has complete control over what is being built on it, which means that the developer cannot build something that would meet current and future market demands. Why does the hotel have to be military-themed? Why can't it just be an Omni? Why does the City want to keep the huge empty parking garages in place? Because the City said so, even though those requirements don't make any sense from a developer's perspective. The developer has to take a huge financial risk to build something dictated by an entity that has other motives than building a commercially feasible development.
It will take a long time for a Developer to have the cash and take the risk to build what the City requires. We are probably going to have to wait for lower interest rates for that to happen, which won't happen for years.
The scuttlebutt around the developer circles is that it would make more sense for the city to let a developer buy the land and the mall building, knock down the mall, and re-build a new, urban downtown core (think Town Center in Virginia Beach).
Except, Town Center took 20 years to get where it is today. That's too long of a time for our City's politicians to allow. It's politically safer for them to put out a pretty picture and an RFP just in time for the State of the City address, with no timeline or plan for actually constructing it.
And this issue gets repeated over and over with City-owned developments. Waterside is a perfect example. The City is going to do the same thing with Waterside when it goes under in a couple of years, and it will take a decade for a new developer to come in and re-build Waterside III, when there is no market demand for a Waterside III anymore.
And so, we come to what is Norfolk's biggest issue (as far as Downtown is concerned): the vision for building new and cool stuff is there, but underlying structural issues exist that inhibit that vision from actually being followed though. Neither Mayor Kenny, nor anyone else on City Council, has the political will to change these underlying structural issues and create a better built environment for our City.

2024.05.18 11:43 No-Collar2554 This is the real reason why Linux is not popular on desktop

Everywhere, everytime there are discussions in the Linux community about the reasons for Linux not being popular on the desktop market. I've seen many people say things from "it doesn't come pre installed in computers" to "it doesn't have Photoshop". However I feel like, while definetly having an impact, these are nor the real reasons behind Linux being impopular. The real reason is that Linux DEs are completely buggy and unreliable. As a long lasting Linux user, this sometimes makes me want to return to windows. For example:
I've had many more problems in the past, and I've been able to solve most of them investing a huge amount of time. And I'm using kubuntu, not some obscure, allegedly hard to use distro
With a user experience like this, how do we expect Linux to be popular? It's just impossible. For Linux to be popular, everything should work out of the box. Just like MacOS. Then, if you want to customize whatever you want, up to you, but everything should just work. I know this is a really hard objective to achieve, but until Linux distros are not at the level of MacOS in terms of user experience, its's impossible for it to have a better market share
Edit: I see some valid criticism in the comments, but some people just got pissed off and are saying "skill issue" and things like that. The point is, you shouldn't need any skill to use the OS. It's should be intuitive and easy to use, and I don't understand why people here don't want to accept this. I'm a software developer myself, in fact, that's why I use Linux, because programming environments are much easier to set up. User experience should be TOP priority when designing software

Hello, posted this almost one year ago ( Time to replace my 10 year old PC I guess, need advice : buildapcforme (reddit.com) ) and then I let it pass. I have just been playing my old gog and steam backlog, but now trying to launch Cyberpunk is just annoying and I know that when I launch Horizon Forbidden West is going to be a tragedy. Also, I have the feeling that the hard drive is going to fail randomly one of these days (I already took backups).
Going to copy paste from last year and edit to be more concise. I guess the parts have changed, and the only thing is that I would prefer to go to nvidia GPUs because they have always worked better for me and I love gimmicks like ray tracing.
**What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.**
Games: all kind, but my favourite ones are open world and crpgs, which are the most demanding anyway. I plan to use my ultrawide 3440x1440x100hz monitor for a while more.
Work: some coding, the rare use of containers and vms.
No video editing for now, maybe some sound editing.
**What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?**
1500-1800 being super generous. Probably won't need to spend that much, I think a new super 4070 is enough?
**When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.**
Yeah so would do asap just to test the components, as I have been reading in the last months. Could wait a couple of months to do a binge shopping.
**What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc\)**
Tower and components inside. Including anything I would need to build the pc :)
**Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?**
London UK
**If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.**
I will reuse all the periphericals including joysticks for the rare flightsim. I will reuse the sound blaster sound card because its amp is amazing.
**Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?**
I got this current CPU with overclocking and I overclocked it 2 or 3 times in 10 years. So: not really.
**Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)**
The defaults now is SSD and 32GB of RAM, right? let's start with that. 2GB minimum because games are huge now. Can do more ram, can upgrade in the future, I cannot see any use now that would use the whole 32GB but who knows.
GPU: Nvidia if possible, I can pay the nvidia tax.
CPU: me likes AMD.
And a reliable PSU if I may. In general, nicer components than the budget I got 10 years ago that I am regretting every day with every blue screen.
**Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?**
Mid tower is the default, right? I trust whoever suggest a build to get a nice tower that won't be a nightmare to setup, maintain etc. Can do with white or black, lights or no lights, transparent or not. Even a bit larger.
**Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?**
Thinking of buying a new copy and leave my current tower to someone else. If that raises the budget, let this happen.
**Extra info or particulars:**
Same as last year: Will need bluetooth and wifi. Don't want to fall short on USB connections as I have loads of things connected (external drives, usb charging for headset, mouse, keyboard etc, gamepads, dj controller... - the front ones are always nice to have.
Thanks again, strangers.

I have a list of parts listed, please provide feedback or suggestions for changes to the parts. Parts are also linked on the PC Part Picker list. To be specific, I want to know if any of the components picked are incompatible with each other or if the parts themselves are bad. I went for the highest-rated components, but any alternatives that would be cheaper or even better for the same performance would be appreciated.

2024.05.18 05:48 jidenshaotoko Can't connect Nuphy Air75 v2 to VIA

My Nuphy Air75 v2 arrived today and it's working great. However, I can't seem to be able to connect it to VIA. It shows as paired when I plug it in, but clicking "connect" does nothing.
I was able to load the official json file I pulled from Nuphy's website, the key tester works, but the configurator doesn't show anything.
I tried it both on macOS Sonoma and Windows 11, both with the latest updates. Anyone has a clue on how to fix this?
