Stationary Diesel engine that used to run an ammonia compressor at a local Ice manufacturing works back in the 30’s. Pictured here after my grandfather and great uncles lifelong collection of old iron was auctioned away. Wanted to share this beast 🤘.

Fairbanks Morse Refrigerator MotoPump
Hello all,
I was cleaning out an old family barn recently and discovered this frame with an old electric motor and what looks like a pump bolted to it. The tag reads "Fairbanks Morse Refrigerator". I didn't scrub the tag with anything yet, only brushed it off lightly so I wouldn't scratch off any important data.
Does anyone know what year-range or refrigerating unit this is from and should I keep it filthy ("antique'd") or should I clean it up, paint it, and make a presentable/display piece?
I'm sure it isn't worth much, but I can't restore, sell, or throw something out against my conscious until I know for a fact there's no harm or loss in doing so.
Thanks for looking!

2024.02.10 01:09 Lazy_Train1919 Is this possible?

Is this possible?
So I was kimda curious what the remnants of Alco was and it led to me finding out that FairbanksMorse has the right to and still makes Alco's 251 prime mover. It just has me thinking if it would be possible to make the prime mover tier 4 compliant allowing Alco's that have lost their older PM's cough Napa Valley cough to essentially get back on the rails.
Thanks
P.s. pic isnt related I just like Alco's lol

2024.01.23 22:51 Character_Air_8660 New neighbor just moved next door...the interesting story behind his name:Whittier...

A young single dad of twin boys(he's 27, they're seven), his girlfriend died of breast cancer a few months ago...
He's settled in now and came over to introduce himself yesterday
"HI, I'm Whittier, and these are my sons, Spencer and Kimball...and my cats, Boston and Dallin"...
"What???...you were named after the poet John Greenleaf Whittier and the city(aka "Quakertown, USA")???...wow!!!..."...
"But I'm not a Quaker, I'm actually a LDS member..."...
"Yeah, I could tell that by their names heard frequently on YouTube"...
"You know about how us Mormons/Saints always use weird names, right?..."...
"Oh, yeah..."...
Honestly, I've never heard of "Whittier" used as a first name...maybe for a Alaskan malamute, but...
Oh, by the way, his younger brothers are twins as well:Fairbanks and Morse(18, and named after the industrial powerhouse that made engines, locomotives and weight scales)...

2024.01.15 02:51 OUTLAW_PAGETY 1958 pioneer model RA 100cc

I believe it's a 1957-1958 pioneer model RA.. (100cc?) We found it today buried in the back of our shed after my dad said (yesterday) he thinks there's a saw in the back. It's been sitting untouched for 20-25 years. It turns over (not seized) It was given to him many many years ago from a guy who bought it from a farm auction.
Does anyone have any info about these saws?

2023.12.11 05:01 caugn Thoughts please

So I'm a Duramax guy (sorry). Professionally I'm a marine diesel tech (Caterpillar, EMD, Fairbanks Morse - opposed piston, Fairbanks Morse - ALCO, Wartsila - ZA40). So I'm familiar with diesels but I know little about the Cummins. My buddy is looking at buying this: https://www.gmautosalesllc.com/vdp/20673570/Used-2005-Dodge-Ram-2500-4dr-Quad-Cab-1405-WB-4WD-SLT-for-sale-in-Albertville-AL-35951
What are the thoughts and concerns? Too expensive (31k)? Not a good year? Also he's buying sight unseen, so any particular questions he should be asking?
Description says automatic but pictures show manual (I told him it's a concern for me when the description doesn't match the picture)
Thanks

2023.12.08 10:32 AntiBaoBao Question from old A-ganger

Out of curiosity, are Virginia class boats still using Fairbanks Morse diesel engines? We had Fairbanks 5 1/4 8 cylinder on my first boat and 8 1/8 12 cylinder on my second boat....just wondering as I was a diesel operator and diesel maintenance tech for Fairbanks Morse.

2023.12.01 00:56 LunarTunar [EVENT] Raytheon Vault Technologies

September 1956
Raytheon has spun off a new division, known as Raytheon Vault Technologies, with the goal of selling protection against the immediate effects of nuclear war.
The prototype Series 1000-P shelter is to be built in Waltham, Massachusetts, not far from the company’s current headquarters. The vault shall be rated to hold 200 inhabitants for a typical period of between four weeks, although there is technically space for 400 inhabitants. The vault shall be built 200ft below the surface at a cost of $4,500,000. It shall be rated to withstand a 3 megaton detonation at a distance of 3 miles.
On the surface is a simple substation, inside of which shall be a steel door that leads to the passageway. This passageway is 400 ft long, with a 90 degree turn halfway down, and is constructed with walls 3 feet thick. At the bottom of the passageway is the bunker airlock, featuring an airlock with a pair of large double doors , with each set weighing 1.5tons.
The bunker itself shall be built upon a 100 feet thick gravel absorption layout, and shall feature external reinforced concrete walls 10 feet thick, wrapped in copper mesh. Internal walls are to be between 8 inches and 3 feet in thickness. Atop the bunker is a 100,000L water tank.
Power shall be supplied with a 2,400hp Fairbank Morse 38D-12 diesel engine with access to a 3-month supply of diesel, attached to an Allis-Chalmers generator producing 540v at 1,600kw, charging a a pair of 126-cell Sargo II battery arrays in series which is then stepped down to 415v when required for appliance use. The shelter shall also have connections to the grid, being able to draw from it, and charge its battery array from it, if available.
Air conditioning is to be supplied by the Michigan based Amana Corporation. The kitchen facilities shall include appliances built by both Tappan and Amana, including the Tappan Model RL-1 Microwave Oven, a device co-developed by Raytheon.
The bunker shall open in September 1957, and be available to viewings by congressmen, military officials, and anyone with a large enough bank account to be important.
