MOBO faulty, need to either replace or sell the whole PC, Please advise!

2024.05.21 20:11 leavesahilalone MOBO faulty, need to either replace or sell the whole PC, Please advise!

I just received a PC from a relative for free, but it has a faulty motherboard. Here are the specs:
The ASUS MAXIMUS VIII RANGER motherboard is beyond repair, and I'm unsure whether to upgrade the motherboard or sell the entire PC as is. The CPU is a bit outdated, and any replacement motherboard for the 6th/7th Gen CPUs won't be future-proof.
A local shop is selling an ASUS Q170M-C motherboard for around $46 USD. Should I go for this motherboard and perhaps get a budget GPU to play games like Red Dead Redemption 2 on medium to high settings? Or should I abandon this idea and sell the remaining parts of the PC instead? My budget is limited and I am not sure if this upgrade is worth it in 2024?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

2024.05.21 19:56 SugarFreeLobbyist HP45L Ram upgrade suggestions

I'm a novice to PC so I'm turning to my fellow HP Omen owners for help. I bought a used 45L (GT22-1082) with 16GB of ram that I would like to increase to 64GB. What Ram is suggested for these stations? I'm open to anything with/without RGB.
I've read through the forums and overall confused on what I can use. From what I understand is I can use DDR5 up to 5200MT per the motherboard. Do I need to consider anything else? This PC is solely for Gaming on a 1440 Monitor @ 144Hz.
Beside changing the XMP profile to Default 1 is there anything else I should do after install?
Current PC Specs: i9 - 13900KF (13th Gen) RTX 4070 Ti 16GB (2x 8GB of DDR5 at 5200Mz) DDR5 UDIMM XMP5-5200 - Uc0-1010-XT HP52U40S6MA-8FR 8A96 Mother Board

2024.05.21 19:31 OGSizzuhL Help me troubleshoot!

So my little brother has been using my old PC for about 2-3 years now, the specs are as followed:
💠i9-10850K CPU 💠Corsair iCUE H150i Elite CAPELLIX XT 360mm AIO 💠2 x 16GB DDR4 3600MHz G.Skill RAM 💠ASUS ROG STRIX Z490-A Gaming MOBO 💠MSI RTX 3070 Gaming Trio GPU 💠2TB M.2 NvMe SSD from Sabrent Rocket 💠850W Gold 80+ Certified Fully Modular Thermaltake PSU 💠Asia Horse PSU Cable Extensions for CPU, GPU, & MOBO 💠10 x 120mm ARGB Fans + 2 x 200mm ARG Fans
(Yes I know 12 fans is ridiculous but the case had room so what the heck)
🔺🔻🔺🔻🔺🔻🔺🔻🔺🔻🔺🔻🔺🔻🔺🔻🔺🔻
So anyways I had just gotten a monitor mount, beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro Studio Headphones, and new extended mouse pad for him since he needed a replacement to those things, minus the mount but it was a space issue on the desk really. I didn’t mess with the PC at all just unplugged the monitor, moved the desk etc. Once everything was done I pushed the power button and no signal.. immediately I checked cables, hard resetting. Then noticed the VGA light on the Motherboard. I’ve tried the following troubleshooting methods:
👉🏻CMOS clearing for 10-15m 👉🏻24-pin disconnected for 10-15m 👉🏻Resetting RAM 👉🏻Switching RAM 👉🏻Using only 1 RAM stick 👉🏻Switching GPUs 👉🏻Switching Monitors 👉🏻Switching Cables 👉🏻Switching from Display Port to HDMI 👉🏻Disconnect everything on the motherboard for 10-15m 👉🏻Switched to a different Motherboard 👉🏻Connected the display port/HDMI to the motherboard and removed the GPU then when it didn’t show I plugged in the card as well to try it like that and nothing..
All these and still the VGA maintained illuminated.
When I packed up the motherboard replacement I bought and when I finished installing the original motherboard and tried turning it on now the VGA light is off but the DRAM light turned on.. I’ve tried all the methods I did before when the VGA light came on and nothing.
Truth be told I didn’t get a chance to try different ram but I doubt it’s that.
My brother mentioned something about a PSU issue possibly that he read about online so I might buy a new PSU to try that but I’m out of ideas..

2024.05.21 19:27 RGNATION Upgrade path for prebuilt PC

My nephew was given a prebuilt PC from CyberpowerPC for Christmas. £650, built well, RGB with fans and does the job for a 17 year old.
However he asked me for help, he says he wanted to upgrade the storage as it came with a 500GB NVME stick, but wants to store more games.
I obviously suggested 1tb or 2tb ssd sticks from Amazon which are the easy upgrades he can make. He however asked what other upgrades can he eventually make (once he keeps working his weekend job and saves up).
I asked for a full run down of his specs. He is a kid who’s gonna play GTA 5. I think he gets around 60 fps on it.
CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 4500 3.60GHz, RAM - 16GB Ram at default speed (2 sticks), GPU - MSI GTX 1650, Storage - 500gb NVME ssd, Motherboard - A520-A Pro, Power supply - Other brand 450 Watts, Monitor - 1440p 175 Hz, Windows 11
Without obviously changing the whole motherboard, what is the best part he can get in each category while not going over budget? Like he won’t be spending thousands any time soon, but like probably little incremental upgrades throughout the years I reckon. He hasn’t even opened inside the PC yet so it needs to have longevity. (It would probably be me that does it for him until he learns).
I think the noticeable difference would be a new GPU for instance impact? Then much later do RAM up to 32gb? Should we upgrade the power supply? And much much later then a new CPU?
What are your thoughts please?

2024.05.21 19:19 BumblebeeSure4903 Is it worth upgrading my PC or should I just buy a new computer?

Hi, so I've been looking to upgrading my computer which I do a lot of digital art and 2D animation work, but I'd also like to do some video editing and also have a computer that is capable of running After Effects. I mostly play games on console so I'm not too concerned about playing games on PC either.
My current PC specs are: Intel i3-4170, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (4GB, EVGA), 16GB of ram, ASUS B85M-G motherboard
I've never built or upgraded a PC before, but have been researching quite a lot on how to go about doing that and what parts to get, and this was the list I came up with that I think can handle what I need at an affordable price: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/GD8J4M
Or would it be easier to just find a pre-built PC at around the same price for what I need? I don't need top of the line parts; anything is an upgrade at this point lmao
Thanks in advance for the help!

2024.05.21 18:56 freebird4446 Transferring large files from microSD to Hard Drive

I built a PC a few years ago to handle high quality 4k footage. It has a Ryzen 5950 processor and a nice GPU for those days. What I didn't account for was that I would be generating 1-3TB of video footage a day on micro SD (V30) and need a way to quickly transfer that footage to a hard driver every day. USB 2 isn't going to cut it and looking at specs at appears some type of thunderbolt connection is the way to go for transfer speeds. Whats the best way to interface thunderbolt to my desktop to use it's faster trasnfer speeds with my computer or is there something else I should be looking at? I don't have the name of my motherboard off hand but it has plenty of slots for adding extras if needed and I'm not opposed to replacing my motherboard if there is something that would work better.

2024.05.21 18:51 Such-Exchange5988 Why is my new PC slow?

Hey everyone. I study video game production and design and I use platforms like Autodesk Maya, Adobe Substance suite and most importantly UE 5. I recently (with the help of my dad) built a PC for school work, granted on a budget but I believe we managed. Besides this, I have found my PC to be incredibly slow at times for the tiniest things like opening a chrome page. It will take a few seconds to respond and then about a minute for the interface to show. Then its a repeat for each click that I make. Needless to say its incredibly frustrating after spending a good amount of money on it. I know some things needs updating but its definitely not normal for a modern computer to take so long to load a page. Before anyone asks, wifi isn't the issue because this occurs opening things that don't need wifi as well.
I would like to know if there are any tech people that know computers is what could be the cause of this so I know what to update in my PC. I suspect my hard drive and possibly my gpu. I'll list the specs that I know off below if someone could be so kind to check it out.
Feel free to ask questions I try to answer to the best of my knowledge. Thanks!
TLDR: My PC is slow, I need help to find out the cause.
SPECS:
Asus proart z790-creator wifi motherboard, CPU 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-13700K, 32GB RAM, GPU NVIDIA Quadro RTX 4000 (8GB), Disk: Seagate 4-TB 5.9K 3.5 6G SATA HDD (if im not mistaken)

2024.05.21 18:33 ZitterGaming Building 2 New PCs - Looking for recommendations

My girlfriend and I have been playing games and streaming on the same systems for about 7 years now.
Our current specs:
These builds have been fantastic over the last 7 years. However, we've recently made the jump to 1440p and that coupled with 7 years of advancements (as you can imagine) has finally forced us to upgrade due to performance issues in both games we've played for years and newer titles. I think we've decided that making the jump to AM5, DDR5, and a 4XXX series GPU seems to be the best option.
The only decision that I believe I'm dead-set on is the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, as I've read that the 3D cache is almost uncontested for gaming.
I believe we are leaning towards the RTX 4070 Super, more specifically the Asus Dual or TUF. I believe I will be sticking with Nvidia GPUs as I've had positive experiences with them and have only heard negative things about AMD cards (drivers being the most common amongst my friends that have them).
As far as a motherboard and gpu, I used to swear by Asus, but have only been seeing negativity surrounding their products as of late. I've had pretty good experiences with MSI products in the past, and I've had terrible experiences with Gigabyte and EVGA products so I tend to steer clear of those brands, although my experiences with them were many years ago.
I am open to any suggestions about components as a whole. More specifically, I am looking for suggestions on motherboards and gpus, however if there are reasonable suggestions for CPUs over the one that I've chosen or any other components (RAM, PSU, coolers, etc.), I'm more than open to them.
The goal is to (hopefully) build new PCs that will last us another 5-7 years with minimal or no upgrades for gaming and light streaming/video editing at 1440p. The budget for BOTH PCs combined is around $4000, but like everything in life, the more cost-effective the better.
Thanks in advance!
Edit: One big issue I forgot to mention is that I will NEED a mobo replacement. I made a braindead mistake once our security system was installed and ended up plugging my PC into the PoE port we had set up for our security system and it cooked the ethernet and several USB ports on the back of my mobo..

2024.05.21 18:06 CodingWithFirey Installation stuck on window

I am trying to download Ubuntu on an external SSD. It has 512GB of space and 300MB/S read and 400MB/s write speed, I have very fast internet.
I was watching a tutorial on YouTube on how to do this for which the link is here https://youtu.be/bfWdnCIrcxk?si=GmiN5yhdoJztl21-
I did almost everything he said, I just didn't turn safe boot off cause that seemed sketch for me. While installing this page did hang for some time because the ssd got disconnected from my pc somehow but I restarted my pc and continued installing.
Before anyone says 'try dual booting' or related, I do not find that safe since my family will ask me for help whenever they turn on the pc and I have to go to collage in a few months.
My pc specs (if it helps):- CPU: I5 11th gen GPU: RTX 3060 TI RAM: 16 gb single slot DDR4 Motherboard: I have no clue but I have 4 isb slots in the front and back with a c port and a micro card ssd reader built it, if any1 can find the model pls lmk.
So what should be my next move as it has been stuck on this configuration/installing window for the past 6 hours or more.

2024.05.21 17:57 MariscalMarisco Pc Crashing Black Screen

Hi, I've been having this problem for a while, my PC sometimes crashes while I'm playing but only when it's a moment of action or similar. For example, before I would get a drop in fps the moment a boss makes a quick attack, now my PC goes black and I have to force it to shut down while the graphics card makes a constant and repetitive noise as if it were going to start up. I think it must be something with the CPU or motherboard because the graphics card is not that old and I have changed the thermal paste on both the graphics card and the processor and the temperatures are completely normal. I noticed that my mouse and keyboard turn off when i have a black screen crash and that might be because the problem of my pc is the PS, i dont know, any help would be amazing.
My specs:
-AMD Ryzen 5 2600
-16 Gb Ram 3200 MHz
-Nvidia Gtx 1650

2024.05.21 16:44 Personal_Arm_6950 [Java] Minecraft Crashing on New PC

Thank you in advance for your help.
I am currently facing a frustrating issue whereby Minecraft crashes upon launch. The issue I met seems exactly the same as the following:
https://www.reddit.com/MinecraftHelp/comments/zyshew/java_minecraft_crashing_on_new_pc/
I tried on different version, from 1.16.1 to 1.20.6 but the game crashed as the same. The crash report is differerent from crash to crash. All most of them related with JAVA environment, but still crash after changing or reinstalling JAVA (from JAVA8 to JAVA22).
Things I have tried:
My specs are as follows:
At first, I thought it was an issue with AMD's architecture, but after refering
https://www.reddit.com/MinecraftHelp/comments/zyshew/java_minecraft_crashing_on_new_pc/
I believe the hardware issue is significant, especially with the Z790 motherboard.
I am very curious if there can really be a hardware issue with the motherboard that causes Minecraft to not run properly? Since I believe the issue is not caused by mods/game verison/Java version.

2024.05.21 16:07 Raptcher Blender Killed My MB?

Hello all!
Apologize for the click-baity title, but I am pulling my hair out atm trying to figure out what the eff is wrong with my system.
Original System Specs:
5950x all core OC at 4.6
Gallahad AIO
3080 10GB
Asus ROG STRIX B450-F
128 GB ram at 3200
M.2 500 GB for OS
M.2 2 TB for games
850 gold power supply
Temps never reached above 80C on either CPU or GPU
Backstory:
I am learning blender, specifically fluid sims and while trying to export a particularly intense sim blender kept crashing after an hour or two of exporting. Thought nothing of it and went to start over when the whole system started crashing. Everything I read pointed to faulty drivers as I couldn't even open blender without a crash.
So I replaced the GPU with a 4080super, fresh installed all the drivers, and still the system crashed.
After deeper troubleshooting my 5950x no longer was stable at 4.6 and wouldn't even accept a 4.0 all core OC (tested via OCCT). So I went back to stock. And while I no longer got system crashes. However during heavy gaming load, I would get INCREDIBLE frame stutters, like 3-5 seconds worth. Monitoring via OCCT showed the clock would drop to 400 Hz range during the stutters.
SO... I took the 4080super back, :'( , and exchanged it for a new 5950x. Again try an all core OC of 4.6 however again nothing is taking and so I set it back to stock and set core voltage to 1.325 and no stutters.
HOORAY FIXED!
OR SO I THOUGHT
I attempted to up the clocks, as my sims were taking even longer for less intensive sims, by increasing the voltage to 1.375 and BAM, I get the frame stutters from hell again. I drop the voltage back down to 1.325, and even auto, but to no avail as the stutter is here to stay.
CONCLUSION:
Since the temps of both never crested 80C, it isn't thermal throttling. At this point it has to be the motherboard, right?!
What else is there as I have stability tested the ram with no faults. And I am nowhere near pulling enough watts to overload my 850 power supply. I think the voltage is the tip-off but someone smarter can hopefully correct me.
TLDR
Blender crashes -> Massive frame stutters in intense game situations
Changed GPU bu was still getting them
Changed CPU and set core voltage to 1.325 and was all good, but after pushing core voltage above 1.35 the stutters came back and no amount of messing with core voltage is fixing it
