2024.05.21 20:20 Iarefunny Definitive Norsca: Throgg The Troll King Guide (V5.0.3)(L/VH)

Everybody wants Norsca to be relevant and good again. With Epidemus, Tamurkhan, Malakai, Kislev, Thrott the Unclean, Malus Darkblade surrounding you, and the WoC update, a lot of people have complained that the Norsca roster feels slim, bare-bones, and their campaign can feel lackluster. That being said, Norsca has an amazing economy (arguably the best), a solid dependable defensive base in Norsca, the capability for rapid expansion, and strong lords so it definitely DOES have a lot going for it, and Throgg himself can lead an extremely frenzied (or rapid) campaign.
TL;DR of How Throgg and Norsca Work
Pros & Cons:
Will try to only give pros and cons relevant to Throgg's faction rather than the Norsca.
Pros:
Cons:
Early Game:
You do have a bit of a tough initial battle, but you got it for sure. Let your province allow you to recruit 1 more, recruit and move. Ignore Norsca after you get your initial province, go down, take Malakai out ASAP (very achievable, rush his artillery). get Lair of the Trolls, go down and you'll find Kostatlyn and Azazel fighting, with Kostatlyn wounded. In fact, if you offer to join his war against Azazel, he'll most likely agree to be your vassal (happened in 3 out of 3 playthroughs). Don't let him be your vassal, he won't join wars against Katarin and its in your victory condition to crush him. With this, you have Katarin to crush and you can recruit another lord in Norsca to lead your war to confederate the others.
Build infrastructure buildings ASAP. Minor settlements will have growth building + minor military chains + either the income building (only 150g, so not really worth it), or the building that gives you a wizard hero.
If you decide to raise another army, it could be worth it to wait till Throgg minimizes the global recruit time for trolls. You can save loads of turns and cash because you recruit 3 Ice Trolls per turn. Replace Throggs army with Ice Trolls ASAP though, and make sure that its recruited on the east side of your province because thats significantly faster to reach Throgg with than raising at the capital.
Mid Game:
A decision here: Do you continue conquering past Kislev into the Empire and eventually running into the Chaos dwarves? Or do you conquer the entirety of Norsca and go north? It's up to you. You've probably already accomplished your early victory conditions, so it's entirely up to you.
The ideal composition for non-Throgg armies now are LL, 2 Skinwolf Werekin, 1 Fimir Balefiend, and 1 Sorcerer-Shaman, 6 Skin Wolves, Ice Trolls, and maybe 3-4 ranged units (I add them for flavor but you could just have more Ice Trolls or whatever you want here).
Malus Darkblade will be a PROBLEM. Loads of ranged weapons, artillery, and Malus is a tough, tough guy to beat. Sigvald might also have the legendary heroes with him + upwards of 5-6 armies between him and his vassal who attack you from all sides. Sigvald and Malus will 100% get some of your settlements. You can't be everywhere all at once.
Late Game:
Mammoth doomstacks. Raze settlements. Occupy and paint the map. Do whatever you want. You were done with your objectives in the early game, it's entirely up to you what you want to do now. You've also experienced most of the roster, so it's literally just long term objectives for you. I would actually not advise that you play into the late game, because I am almost certain you will find the campaign stale as hell and the god rewards aren't worth grinding out for, especially now that we have Tzeentch and Nurgle factions.

Overall Rating & Review
If you're an old head who's played a ton of Norsca, it be very enjoyable to play Norsca with the new LLs that surround you. If you're new and own WH1, Norsca is a fun faction that you need no DLC for to have everything. There's no time wasted in this campaign, no down time, it ramps up as fast as it burns out.
Definitely a fun change of pace, a straightforward campaign, it's not where we would probably want Norsca as a faction and they would benefit a ton from just a few more units and some end game goals. That being said, I don't think it deserves the amount of hate I see it getting. It's enjoyable.
Final rating:
8/10+ if you're a Norsca fan.
7/10 if you're neutral.
5/10 if you're a difficulty nut.
Also everyone, it's my second time writing a guide or a review for Total War, so if you have any feedback, please do let me know in the comments! I submit my first guide for Nakai over a year ago, and I still get messages in my inbox and on that thread for it which really motivated me to make another guide. I'll be more than happy to get back to anyone if they have any questions, I had a great time playing this campaign and I love this game!

2024.05.21 19:18 darksydex3226 An idea to lean into Yone's "Assassin" role

Disclaimer: I don't claim to be an expert or that this build will be any good, or that there aren't better item options, etc. I'm sure others can come up with something more viable. I just thought it was fun to think of Yone in a different way due to recent changes.
Thanks for your time.
Electrocute Yone
According to his character profile on the LoL website, Yone is an Assassin. I was thinking of ways to lean into this role due to the recent changes.
This Yone isn't looking for 3v1s vs the beefy boys, but instead looking to use clever angles, vision, and his dash-heavy tools for successful roams, and wreaking havoc on the back line during intense team fights, similar to Zed. Goes without saying, but I'm thinking with mid lane in mind. Sadly this build is way more team dependent, as it requires them to engage and eat CD timers.
Let's talk about the Electrocute Keystone. It doesn't scale well, but as we know Yone does, so this rune might be the answer to make up for poor early game. It's easy to activate as Yone can confirm a 3 hit combo with little to no effort. Utilizing this might be what he needs to keep his enemy laner on their toes or god forbid snowball a lead.
For the 3 primary runes, I'm looking at Sudden Impact. Yone has a kit full of dashes and blinks, and bushes are a big part of the game plan too. I'm also looking at Taste of Blood, but unsure. Perhaps if your opponent is a beefier mid lane like Galio this might be worth a try, but for the sake of this concept, I'm sticking with SI, but I can't rule out ToB, I think both are worth exploring.
Eyeball collector is obvious.
The third row is also worth exploring, I think Bounty is nice to scale faster, but ultimate hunter seems like a go-to choice, and even relentless hunter might not be awful for roams, sidelaning, and positioning. For now we'll go with Ultimate, but I feel like all 3 could be an option depending on enemy comp and what you're trying to accomplish on a game to game basis.
For the second tree, I am looking at Legend: Alacrity and Coup De Grace. These are consistent choices you'd run with a Yellow Keystone, might as well have them.
For tiny runes, Attack Speed, Adaptive Force, and matchup dependent for the third row, with perhaps the base health being a go-to choice for healthier trading and farming early, but with so much CC in the game, and it being our worst enemy, I think it's tenacity in most cases.
For the first item, I'm not going to break the mold. I think Zerker Greaves are still the prime choice. We need AD in our next item, so a recurve bow item is probably the best bet, sadly. I was looking at Bork, but there's also Kraken Slayer. This can add more burst damage, so I think this is it, but Bork also makes a great case with sustain and a slow effect for combo confirms. I'm on the fence about which one to take, but definitely one of the two. At least there's some build variance, perhaps KS into favorable and Bork otherwise. I can't recommend Wits End due to lack of AD, but that tenacity sure does look nice.
Now we desperately need crit, and a way to E back to our body before being killed, so I'm looking at the Shieldbow. I think, if you are ahead (by some miracle) an IE is the pick, but let's assume this is real life and you're not ahead. Playing around your Shieldbow CD will be crucial, and I wouldn't engage skirmishes/team fights without it unless circumstances are favorable (big CDs down, squishy on opposite side of the map of entire team and pushed past river, etc).
Item 4 is IE for sicko mode burst and you'll be able to assist your team in fighting frontliners after getting squishy kills... if you don't need to run off bloody and beaten. I think times like that'll be few and far between, but with this item you should be able to easily dispatch the backline and run away with a good team engage followed by your jump scare ambush.
For a 5th item, I think the Bloodthirster looks solid. It adds a lot of AD, well needed sustain (especially if you're Borkless), and it's another shield on top of your other shields. However, and hear me out... if you are having trouble recalling E due to CC, take a look at the Mercurial Scimitar. It comes with AD, Lifesteal, MR, and a unique active that ensures you can recast E. I'd say it's a good "training wheels" item if you aren't great at focusing on enemy CDs and dodging abilities.
The final item, the variable slot! I'm not sure how viable GA is because when you're jumping the backline all the Frontline has to do is back pedal from the teamfight and take you out after coming out of stasis, with that being said, if you went BT, Merc Scimitar might be good, and vice versa. I'm also thinking a Collector might not be bad for easier secures, but probably overkill. If the team has heavy healing there's the Mortals Reminder, which comes with a lot of components we like anyway. Lord doms for heavy armor, or a Spirit Visage for heavy AP as well as complementing your lifesteal and shields. If you need armor I think Death Dance makes a case with AD as well as a useful passive that can get you out of a sticky on takedowns. I haven't thought this part out too hard if I'm being honest, I feel like there's a lot of good cases to be made for the variable slot, and I'm not great when it comes to itemizing and synergies.
Clearing vision is paramount for successful ambushes, so be sure to have a pink ward and scanner handy in most scenarios.
Thanks for your time, and let me know if you gave it a try. I play on the phone exclusively now, and thankfully we still have LT, but I'm considering trying this build concept for fun in norms....
And to be prepared for when the inevitable day of reckoning comes.

2024.05.21 18:55 Mental-Address265 One thing Pikmin 3 does better than 4

Of course it's just my opinion, so i wanted to discuss something.
I think that pikmin 4 may probably be my favorite game of the series, something that i would have never expected since i've been a huge pikmin fan since 2001 and i thought nostalgia would have prevented me to love pikmin 4 as much as i should have, but this didn't happen. After 19 freaking years my favorite game in the series went from pikmin 2 to pikmin 4, and i believe this latest installment has an almost perfect formula for the series that i would like to stick with for the next titles too. Anyway, you read it in the post title, there's something i like way more in pikmin 3, something that may sound "small" but that does a huge difference to me.
As you might have guessed, Pikmin 3 uses an approach i don't find very fitting for Pikmin, as much as i love story driven games i don't think it's the best thing for this one in particular. Don't get me wrong, i LOVE pikmin 3 and i'm super happy it exists as having many interpretations of i game i love is the best thing i could ask for, i just didn't want it to become the standard. Anyway, there's something that to me reaches its peak in pikmin 3 and that disappointed me a little in pikmin 4.
Finding new types: I know, this may sound silly, but when i think of pikmin 3 the first thing that comes to my mind and makes me wanna replay it is how you unlock new types. In pikmin 1 it was incredibly basic, you find the first two onions in random places and only the blue one is conceptually close to its element. In pikmin 2 this was incredibly improved, you find the red pikmin while you're divided and you use them to have the characters meet again, you find purples and whites in caves only, making them special, the blue onion is visible before the yellow one, but unaccessible unil you get yellows in the next one. Being the most story based one, in pikmin 3 every time you find a new onion it's in a different and interesting situation: The red onion is dangling from a plant like a fruit and you have to take it down with pikmin, the rock onion is stuck in crystal and you have to free rock pikmin to get to it, the yellow one has a whole very cool puzzle around it with the bridge, the winged one is my favorite as it's stuck in a web, showing from the start who are winged pikmin's predators and the blue one is just so cool, underwater, only lifted by winged.
In pikmin 4 you can do something in always wanted to do and i'm very glad for it, you can find pikmin in any order you want, anyway, you generally find a few pikmin first and only unlock the onion later and after a few runs i noticed this bothered me a lot. You find a new type but you barely can use it and when you find the onion you don't feel like having a new type cause you already had that one. It breaks my excitement for new pikmin in half and it never feel as cool as it did in pikmin 3. As i said, i love having a new approach, but for a future game... I don't know, this doesn't excited me very much, anyway i'll briefly tell you how i would handle this in pikmin 5:
I'd do a mix of the two, how? Each map has its onions scattered around, you can find them in different orders as some maps may have more than one onion and most of the times you won't even need all of them to unlock the next area. This way, you get to wander freely and get pikmin in different orders... BUT... I would love to have some sort of small "quest" or puzzle for each onion, one that gives me a sense of uniqeness to each of them. For example, the blue onion could be inside a tricky submerged tunnel, you don't need any other type to reach it, but when you do you feel like you've completed something and now the map feels bigger and more open cause you can already farm pikmin of that type and explore. Ice onion? Put it in an ice based puzzle and let red pikmin be needed to melt the ice, you have them from the start so it's not a problem. Winged? It could even be the final reward from a spider boss in a cave! You can do it with any type, but it feels like a quest!
So, this is my idea, what are your thoughts? Did you like the pikmin 4's approach? Or you prefer the 3's one like me? Sorry for the eeeextra long post, and thanks for the attention šŸŒ¼

2024.05.21 18:49 OkMain3645 [PH] Review of the game as someone who absolutely loves this game

Hello y'all!
I would like to post about my honest review of this game.
For context, PH was my very first Zelda ever, and I haven't tried many Zelda games besides PH and ST (currently on my way to finish it). It was a big part of my childhood, and going back to play it once more recently was so worth it.
Having said that, this is my review of the game:
Overall, I think the game is very well made. I was quite surprised to see that in the English Internet the game is not as liked as it was in the country I grew up in.
The strengths of the game are as follows. First, the dungeons. I know this game is often hated because of its heavy reliance on the Temple of the Ocean King, but I think this is the best part of the game (although all the criticisms are understandable). I will discuss TotOK in detail later. The other dungeons are pretty well made IMO. My least favorite dungeon is the Goron Temple, but even that was pretty good. Besides TotOK I also loved the Temple of Ice with the grappling hook being a very well made item, the Temple of Wind for the vibes, and Mutoh's temple for both gameplay and vibes. I didn't like the Temple of Courage as much for its complexity, but I understand there's gotta be a dungeon with that characterstics at certain points.
Another strength is the plot.My favourite part of this game is that it really feels like a story with the plot development and whatnot. I think the developers did a good job making this progress especially with information being continuously revealed over the plot (with almost none at the beginning). I think TotOK did a good job with this as well, which I'll explain in a separate section.
Needless to mention characters. All characters are good, but Linebeck alone makes the gameplay 100 times more interesting. I literally named my character 'Linebeck' once to make Linebeck say "Linebeck? That's an odd name. My name is Linebeck!!!! Cool right?".
Now the weaknesses. I think the game could have had better controls (a lot of which were improved in ST). Especially with somersault, it did not need to be that difficult, although as an expert-level player myself I'd love to master that XD
Lastly, the Temple of the Ocean King. I personally know some friends who love the game but absolutely hated TotOK, so I know the hate is quite widespread. I personally don't mind doing repetitive gameplay, so its 'issues' don't bother me at all. I absolutely agree with the idea of having a dungeon you must revisit over and over, so that you can kind of feel the progress. I, however, also agree that the dungeon could get repetitive for some people, and think the developers should've done a better job making the repetition less repetitive and actually focused on finding out puzzles.
Having said that, I would have to ask one question who criticize the game for being too easy and/or repetitive: after the Ghost Ship, have you tried getting both SE and NE sea charts in one run in the TotOK? That makes the game so much funner with that run being so much more difficult (B11 is batshit crazy without bombchus and grappling hook), and you can save yourself 1 run in the TotOK, which means you don't have to think about TotOK until the very end of the game! To give my personal anecdote, in my first play of the game as a child, I kept on going after I got the SE sea chart, and although I wasn't expecting to finish another section right away, I ended up getting the NE sea chart (although barely with no time left in the hourglass XD). That was one of the most memorable moments of my life, and probably one of the greatest reasons why the game sticks so much to me even today (and the TotOK doesn't feel as repetitive as people make out to be).
Upon that, I would like to review each section of the TotOK with a focus on 'repetitiveness':
Thoughts?

2024.05.21 18:41 Aftel43 Not so dubious duo, part 19.

We take seats at a meeting table in the castle, Princess Jiakyn taking a seat first, then Seirialia, Tyrelia, Trenon, Lankensy and Kyrem, then the castle commanders who are quite surprised by presence of princess in their castle, and lastly Jakan and I take seats.
'Alright, explain then.' Lankensy says calmly to Princess Jiakyn. I wish I could have talked to Jakan about her before we sat down.
'Well, it took some persuasion for me to make the journey here. I am not going to just learn with theory, I need something to practice on and I have spell ideas that I want to try out.' Princess Jiakyn says calmly and in persuasive tone. Jakan and I looked into each others eyes for a moment, Jakan looks very concerned and, really wanted to say something but, chose to stay quiet.
'This is a war zone, and there is a good reason why there is a travel ban in this zone too.' Kyrem says straightly without hesitation.
'All the more reason for me to be here, the soldiers would need my presence, so that they know that their efforts will not be thrown away and that they will be remembered.' Princess Jiakyn states in honest tone.
'Do you really believe that you are ready to witness horrors of war?' Jakan asks calmly and interested to Princess' answer. For a moment she looked unsure and slightly insulted that Jakan was the one to ask the question, she looked at others present and even at me. She noticed that all of people here agree with Jakan's question.
'I do.' Princess Jiakyn says with slight hesitation.
'Bold answer, I know it is rude of me to question you, but, know this, I have already vowed that. It is either life, or death, that will carry on. I have seen those horrors myself, I have even fought and executed my own brother in arms. There are good reasons why the castle commanders and heroes of the riven war agreed with why I asked.' Jakan states, not entirely convinced but, willing to guide, guard, shelter, save and teach Princess Jiakyn, if the heroes of the riven war allow.
'How do you have such confidence in the words you have spoken? Ghaudunian.' Princess Jiakyn asks after glancing at all present here.
'As I am a Ghaudunian, I have good grasp of both active and passive effects of dark arcane on people. I have warred against undead before the war, I have seen the horrors, faced sorrowing defeats and lived through moments of triumph. Here, there is only death, life and struggle. One of the heroes of riven war, has met me before the war.' Jakan replies without hesitation and puts weight on his words.
'He was one of the groundskeepers of the Ghaudunian academy which I studied at. Draconian is a brave, stalwart and a dominant figure cast from metal and forged from war. Not many survived from the beginning, to the end of the war. When he speaks of facing undead, it is for your better that you listen.' Seirialia says with honesty.
'You have spoken well, draconian. Although, I have a feeling that my presence here is not exactly welcome.' Princess Jiakyn states to Jakan.
'Not only have we caused a diplomatic and political scandal, I do fear that the undead would make you a priority target to capture. These are not feral or dark arcane maddened undead we are facing, somebody is organizing this affair.' Jakan replies calmly and shows the maps. Princess asked for a confirmation from heroes of the riven war and castle commanders.
'Jakan speaks the truth, I personally witnessed his victory over a revenant champion. His sword is fine, as is his mind for war. Such a destructive figure of battle, are rare and continuing to survive. Surely one of the finest retainers of the shadowy ones.' Salgi states with respect.
'Not only is he strong but, also has knack for dueling. Tied with Lankensy before his victory in a mock duel. Ages like finest wine, princess. I know and understand your distrust towards the Ghaudunians but, in this matter. There are no nations.' Kyrem states with respect.
'What about you? You must be a junior agent.' Princess Jiakyn says heeding the words of to be her people, one day. She asks from me.
'I am indeed a junior agent, it is thanks to me that we know some specifics of who plausibly are behind this. Where my senior, is a cliff breaker, I am his eyes and ears, where he is not. I am new to the organization, but, our lords strongly believed that my skills would only benefit your nation's grand effort on solving this crisis, which is why I am here.' Speak out my purpose of being here to her.
Princess Jiakyn listened very carefully what I said. Closing her eyes to ponder, she nodded and opened her eyes again. That eye color has to be rare for people of Valerie, pink and yellow. Her physical stature, isn't ideal for war but, if she is at least one quarter of Seirialia's skill in arcane. She most certainly would make a difference.
'Alright. I will place my trust on both of you. I believe you are both here to help.' Princess Jiakyn says to me and Jakan. I feel mildly relieved, still, her presence here is double edged matter, I sense she is mildly overconfident but, worse is that she is untested. 'What are your plans for today?' Princess Jiakyn asks in her usual tone of, slightly confident and strong.
'We do need to escort the supply caravan to the town to the north and north west. Right now, we need mages that can heal wounds and work as secondary ranged units. Princess Jiakyn, may I request your presence at the town?' Lankensy asks, this would be both perfect opportunity to bolster morale of the citizens of the town but, also place a target on her back though... Lankensy looks into eyes of Jakan and I.
I think I understand his intentions, Jakan to act as part of the caravan guard and, maybe send me ahead to scout whether it is safe for the princess to enter... Smart man. Jakan ponders what Lankensy tried to indicate to him.
'From what I have heard, the town was in terrible danger previously, what has changed?' Princess Jiakyn asks mildly surprised of Lankensy's proposal.
Castle commanders brief Princess Jiakyn of the situation. Northern sectors of the castle to the town are pretty much back in control of Valerie. She smiles warmly of hearing these news. 'What about you heroes? What are you going to do while this is on going?' Princess Jiakyn asks.
'Kyrem, Tyrelia. Do you two think you can go with me to the town as escorts for the supply caravan?' Lankensy asks after thinking about the situation for a moment.
'This makes sense, we are going to need only good fighters just in case we get intercepted.' Kyrem says, Tyrelia nods in agreement.
'We are quite busy here already. The mages will provide a lot of help in healing these people, I need your assistance too, lady Seirialia.' Trenon says calmly.
'After seeing the slugging match yesterday, I agree with you, Trenon. The more we can help to recover sooner, the better.' Seirialia says, well, that's that for the plans of actually getting to know the heroes of the riven war better.
'What do you want us to do meanwhile then?' Jakan asks pondering how Lankensy is going to answer his question.
'I was planning on having you part of the security convoy and have Volarie check the town for anything suspicious.' Lankensy replies calmly.
'Hmm... Solid thinking. I wouldn't be able to avoid attention in a city. Are you okay with this plan? Princess Jiakyn.' Jakan says calmly.
Jiakyn thinks for a while. 'I do not have objections. When do we depart?' Princess Jiakyn asks somewhat excited to get started.
'It will take a while for the supplies required for the castle to be unloaded. No thoughts on what to do while it is on going...' Lankensy states thinking about the matter.
'How about getting to know each other then?' Princess Jiakyn proposes warmly and innocently. She has some ulterior motives that I can speculate but, no way I am voicing them here, I believe Jakan is thinking the same.
'Well, there isn't really anything else better to do.' Tyrelia says with content tone.
'All of the forces required for the convoy are being amassed as the time goes by anyway.' Kyrem says with a neutral tone, not being for or against the idea.
'A sound idea, I would like to get to know you better, Jakan. Warrior like you, along with the past you have had, must have quite tales to share.' Lankensy says, interested to talk with Jakan. I am guessing that he looks to learn, both history and combat from him.
Very easy to see from Jakan's expression that he is thinking about it. 'You have remained silent for the most of the talk, young agent. Is something bothering you?' Princess Jiakyn asks, warmly and calmly. I can see why people would feel warmly about her.
'At the moment, there aren't really any concerns. As the younger agent, I chose that, my senior agent handles most of the conversations with both of us present and back his words.' Reply to her calmly and partially choosing to elaborate the dynamic between me and Jakan.
'We do have the time since everything for today was already discussed yesterday. Princess, if I may be allowed to be direct with you. I would like to comment on your decision.' Jakan says calmly requesting an allowance to be open to her.
'You may say what is on your mind senior agent.' Princess Jiakyn replies calmly.
'I believe your heart is in the right place when you came here but, I fear for your safety of being here. As you already know, our most recent victory which has secured north east and north of the castle, has very likely escalated the conflict. I have strong suspicions that, once enemy agents in or outside of the castle find out of your presence here, you will be a high value target, which could swing this conflict into favor of our common enemy.' Jakan states humbly and professionally.
'I believe in my people to be wise to not choose such action, and that you agents. Will spare no effort in thwarting any action taken against me.' Princess Jiakyn replies confidently.
'It is just us two here, no more, no less. Princess, I believe I am stretching your willingness to hear those, once your opponents word's but, I plea that you will seek council of the heroes of the riven war when you are making decisions of where to apply yourself. Our combined presence most likely has already set the rumors running, which is my secondary concern.' Jakan says with consideration and caution.
'Your concerns are certainly reasonable, agent Jakan. Once the information of why you are here and involved with our war against the undead, such rumors should no longer be of concern. I will take your plea into consideration.' Princess Jiakyn says calmly, I quickly glance at Jakan, who is, not all that convinced but, fears overstepping his influence, so chooses to just nod deeply to Princess Jiakyn.
Castle commanders speak with Princess Jiakyn and after talking for a while. The private talk is over and we all go take our positions to be ready for the convoy's departure to the town. Lankensy and Jakan go to talk slightly further away from Princess Jiakyn, Kyrem and me.
She could be trying her luck on find out more about me than I am willing to share or about our organization. To my surprise, slightly to my own happiness. 'From what I have heard from my friends, your past was a rather ugly one, societally. I know some deeds of those whose name is Volarie.' Kyrem states to open the conversation.
'I remember reading about my name, how terrifying the weight of it is, certainly explained a lot of the treatment I received. What do you know?' Reply to him calmly, keeping my happiness hidden from him.
'A ghaudunian self learned rogue, who stole, murdered and misdirected Ghaudun in the past, to aid Valerie in all ways possible. This rogue was finally cornered by Ghaudunian guards and some army personnel, chose to take it's own life, than ever reveal anything to it's fellow countrymen. I read some about his exploits, what a scoundrel... Part of me wonders what part will you play.' Kyrem speaks what he knows, his face is masked by the whole head helmet he wears.
'Know that it will not be as anything grandeur as those who came before me, I intend on keeping the home I have. There won't be one like it.' Say with light seriousness.
'Your lords chose wisely to adopt you into their order, you must not have taken the news lightly.' Kyrem replies, referring to my blood, human and dragon in nature.
'It shocked me, part of me wanted to run, part of me wanted to very much not believe it... I had those rumors myself. When I was introduced my new part of my family, it changed me, in all ways, for the better.' Say with warmth. Princess Jiakyn looks confused but, I as expected, she realized quite quickly.
'You have blood of a dragon of Ghaudun?' Princess Jiakyn asks mildly shocked by the realization, even if it isn't all of it.
'Yes, it was a battle accident. We believe primary target was the one whose blood I share. I became a secondary target, just because of proximity. Investigation is still on, we do not have answers yet.' Reply to her calmly.
'I have read about the tales of those who have dragon blood, few even have written book or two. Variety of those tales is, as large as backgrounds and jobs they did before the discovery. You have blood of a shadow dragon?' Princess Jiakyn asks, tone telling that she is interested to hear more.
'I do. Never believed that something like this would happen to me, but, here I am. Ever since the day of meeting him, my life has become a lot better.' Reply in content tone.
'Volarie. I will be quite interested on reading what you have written of your life. Have you learned anything special from the mixing of the blood?' Princess Jiakyn asks excited to hear. Briefly, I smile cunningly to her and then vanish into a shadow before her and Kyrem's very eyes.
'Seirialia told me of your abilities, now, I most certainly believe her...' Kyrem says with slight shock and awe in his voice, as I just stand mixed into the shadows, there, but, not there.
'Learning from the artists and masters of dark arcane, most certainly must have helped. I have read about this ability but, never expected to witness it with my own eyes. Your life most certainly went through a great change...' Princess Jiakyn says with respect, awe and some admiration.
I appear from the embrace of the shadows and stand confidently. 'They most certainly taught me well, I feared the dark arcane, they taught me how to use it and imparted knowledge which helped me greatly to never again fear it. Now I dance with the light and dark as easily as I breathe.' Reply warmly and staying humble.
'You are still young, the best is, it is only upwards from here for you. Envious of you I am, I have only began to understand the other arcanes.' Princess Jiakyn says being open about her emotions to an extent.
'Know that it wasn't easy but, even my teachers admitted that they were somewhat surprised how I was responding to their teachings, even with the struggles here and there.' Reply to her calmly and remembering some of those times.
'It is the only arcane you are adept at?' Princess Jiakyn asks, somewhat doubtful of my words.
'It is, during the Riven War, many of the talents, both dragon and non-dragon were lost, one way or another. They said that, I have a knack for some specific areas of dark arcane, they would have been interested to see what potential I have with the other arcanes but, many of the shadow dragons agreed that having me here, along with Jakan, is the best combination.' Explain to Princess Jiakyn calmly, she isn't a child.
More towards late teens than young adult, state where her world view is growing far more comprehensive and more detailed than before. 'You grew up during the war. Didn't you?' Princess Jiakyn asks, most likely has deduced my age enough well to ask.
'Yes, it was bad, peace... Almost as bad. There are a lot of strong personal emotions, for now, I do not feel safe enough to tell you about them.' Reply carefully and making it clear that, it is a rather sore area.
Princess Jiakyn was about to ask but, Kyrem placed his left hand on Princess Jiakyn's right shoulder, prompting the younger to look at him, he shook his head in reply to the confused expression of the late teen. 'I believe it was commander Salgi who put it best. "War's monsters are not always fought at the front lines." Those are memories best shared in a far more less intense environment.' Kyrem states in straight tone.
Princess Jiakyn seems to struggle understand as her gaze fixates upon me. 'I do not understand.' Princess Jiakyn says to Kyrem when they seem to make eye contact.
'I am not the right person teach you about it. Believe in this though, she wouldn't mind change of subject.' Kyrem says calmly and let's go of Princess Jiakyn's shoulder. Interesting, royal family must trust Kyrem so strongly that they would allow that type of interaction. Princess Jiakyn looked quite surprised and slightly disappointed. I nodded to her, that Kyrem is correct.
She seems to relent, probably acknowledging that there are boundaries that needs to be respected. Thank you Kyrem, I do not think I am at all comfortable to speak about it to her. She thinks for a moment and looks at Jakan for a moment, who is talking with Lankensy. The two warrior's seem quite content with their discussion.
'How did you get to know him?' Princess Jiakyn asks as I look at Jakan for a moment with a small warm smile of happiness. I look at the princess and think about my response.
'First time I ever saw him, was when he doing melee training, felt quite intimidated and scared to talk to him or even be in his presence, so, I just left my melee training for later. Made enough sound for him to realize that somebody had entered the room but, left a lot sooner than what was normal to him.
The shadow dragons had found out about my avoidance of other members of the organization which were not dragon. They told me that, they learned from the war that, incoherent organization, that is not able to trust members within the organization is not a well functioning organization.
They said that, they will allow me to take my time to approach him. It was a lot sooner than later, they set up our proper introduction, relatively innocently. He is whole lot gentle than from outside he might seem to be. Now, we talk like we are life long friends. The draconian is most certainly is a veteran and fluent, of war and death, but, he can be a good mentor about life and peace.' Explain to Jiakyn who is listening very carefully, Kyrem is also listening.
'It sounds rather strange of you to word it how you did. What caused such a shift in him?' Princess Jiakyn asks intrigued.
'There is always change, that which we can observe, that which we can be, to put it quite bluntly, very ignorant off.' Answer to Princess Jiakyn, who looks at Kyrem, man nods deeply in agreement.

2024.05.21 18:39 Aftel43 [FN] Not so dubious duo, part 19.

'Volarie. I will be quite interested on reading what you have written of your life. Have you learned anything special from the mixing of the blood?' Princess Jiakyn asks excited to hear. Briefly, I smile cunningly to her and then vanish into a shadow before her and Kyrem's very eyes.

2024.05.21 18:37 WabbajackedWacko Adventures with an Interdimensional Psychopath 40

***Lily***
ā€œStupid gnome prejudice. I may not be the biggest fan of gnomes but, just because we are small doesnā€™t mean we canā€™t cause some damage.ā€ Mogsten says as he walks over, kicks the fishman, and picks up the horn and dusts it off. ā€œIā€™m hesitant to admit this since, when he regains consciousness, he will do what he could to ruin my business even more but, still, thank you Wabbajack.ā€ He says.
ā€œDonā€™t mention it Mogsten, this guyā€™s haggling game was all over the place.ā€ Wabbajack responds.
ā€œIndeed, he has no understanding of value.ā€ Mogsten says with a smirk on his face.
ā€œWell, unless he knew that you had about another sixty of those in the back that is.ā€ Wabbajack says as he chuckles.
Mogsten quickly turns around as he says, ā€œShh. Thatā€™s a trade secret.ā€ He then lets out an ā€œoh ho hoā€ chuckle. He then looks down and yells, ā€œGourdsten! Clean up!ā€
Just like that, Gourdsten comes out from the back and drags the body off. Soon after the body disappears towards the back, Gourdsten reappears with a spray bottle, gloves, and a sponge.
ā€œWhat happened to him?ā€ I ask Mogsten.
ā€œDonā€™t worry, I canā€™t afford a bloody reputation. He is just in stasis until the authorities get here.ā€ Mogsten answers with.
ā€œStasis?ā€ I ask.
ā€œShe really is new to all this huh? Stasis is basically freezing someone in a state of time. In this state however, while nothing can happen to them, they canā€™t function. Depending on the state they are in when they go under, they may be aware of the environment around them. Sometimes, certain criminals may undergo such punishment for their crimes.ā€ Mogsten explains, looking at Wabbajack for some reason.
Mogsten then looks at me and asks, ā€œSo, did you find all the ingredients?ā€
I nod my head.
He then rubs his temple as he asks, ā€œAnd you Really intend to go through with this?ā€
ā€œThereā€™s no other option!ā€ I exclaim.
ā€œWell, there are quite a few, just that they would take a LOT longer.ā€ Wabbajack points out.
I look at him in annoyance and he responds with, ā€œWhat? Just saying.ā€
I sigh and look at Mogsten and hand him the ā€œingredientsā€.
ā€œLetā€™s see what we have. A fur scarf, a pistol, a lantern that looks like a child tried to make it, aā€¦ rubber duck. And what the world is this?ā€ Mogsten asks pulling out the leg.
ā€œItā€™s a prosthetic leg for a dragon-sized crocodile. Well, a smaller scale version at the very least.ā€ I explain.
ā€œWho would put a prosthetic leg on a Dragon-sized crocodile?ā€ he asks.
ā€œRight?ā€ I ask in return.
He then looks back at the leg, strokes his fake beard, and says, ā€œWell, when you put it like that, makes sense you would want to use it as an ingredient.ā€ He then looks back at me and asks, ā€œAre these the ingredients that you Really want to use?ā€
ā€œThey fit the descriptions that you gave me.ā€ I point out.
He then looks at the ingredients again and says, ā€œYesā€¦ this may actually work then.ā€
ā€œCome again?ā€ I ask him.
ā€œWell, one of the Biggest reasons, after that whole dark nature I mentioned, that this fails is that people try to influence their familiar by using ingredients that donā€™t inspire these feelings.ā€ He explains.
ā€œBecause of this disconnection between the host and the familiar, that may also cause the familiar to go berserk as well.ā€ Wabbajack then explains.
ā€œExactly!ā€ Mogsten exclaims as he points towards to Wabbajack. He then looks back to me and asks, ā€œWith that in mind, are you one-Hundred percent sure that these ingredients are correct?ā€
I nod again and explain, ā€œI can explain my reasons if you want.ā€
ā€œNo. As long as you are certain, then follow me to the back.ā€ He says as he picks everything up again and starts waddling towards the back.
ā€œWould you like some help?ā€ I ask.
ā€œNo, I have to prepare everything anyways so itā€™s best I handle most things from here.ā€ He explains.
Wabbajack walks past me but, I notice he is holding his banjo-thing upside-down. But, its neck is awfully long. Long enough to reach the ground and have the base be about level to his head. Which is pretty impressive since he is not that much taller than me. I want to ask about it but, I figured that is better left for later. Besides, I could probably guess that it can switch between a staff and an instrument. So, I shrug and follow them towards the back.
As I pass the flaps, I let out an audible, ā€œWowā€ because the room is massive! There is so much stock in here. I would have never guessed it from the gypsy-sized tent I see from the outside.
I guess Mogsten hears me as he says while putting the items in a pattern, ā€œSpatial compression spell. Itā€™s like that bag you are probably holding. Itā€™s a pocket of space that you can mess with everything as long as itā€™s registered to you. Any merchant worth his salt at least attempts to lessen the target on his store to wannabe burglars. For example, there was a tannery that was completely torn apart for scrap. I hear the owner left it unattended And unlocked. I hope he can recover from that, itā€™s a pretty costly mistake.ā€
I look off towards the side and say, ā€œOh, I hear he is doing alright. Hehe.ā€
He pulls out a spray can and says while he shakes it, ā€œThatā€™s good.ā€ He then starts spraying the ground.
I look over towards Wabbajack, who is standing sideways towards the thing Mogsten is working on. He has his free hand about chest level, fingers-spread, and it looks like he has a weird circle thing again like when I think I have seen him do before when he casted magic. Like when he summoned that ghost thing. I guess he is on guard duty.
I look back at Mogsten and see he is about halfway done at this point. He works fast since the design is very intricate. Now that I think about it, it looks like that circle Wabbajack has butā€¦ different. I think I remember reading about this. These must be magic circles. While they look similar, they must be different since each magic circle represents something different. Kinda like snowflakes. I canā€™t help but ask, ā€œWhatā€™s that you are spraying to make that magic circle?ā€
ā€œAh, someone has been studying. Itā€™s a mixture of compounds for creating the familiar summoning circle. I kept a few around just in case that someone managed to convince me to do this.ā€ He explains. He then stands up and shakes it some more as he says, ā€œI thought it was unlikely but, a smart businessman looks at every opportunity.ā€ He then goes back to spraying and says, ā€œNow, no offense, but mind letting me focus? I got to make sure I get this perfect. I want to lessen the margin of error as much as possible.ā€
ā€œOh! Sure. Sorry.ā€ I say. Now that I think about it, I look towards my bag and think about what he said, ā€œLike my bag.ā€ I open it and it looks like a normal bag. Either it needs to be activated or it doesnā€™t have that spell yet. Iā€™ll have to ask about that after we are done.
ā€œBefore I forget, leave your bandolier and bag over by Wabbajack there. We donā€™t want to add unnecessary items to the circle.ā€ Mogsten says as he shakes the can again.
ā€œOh! Alright!ā€ I respond. I take off my bandolier and put it down by Wabbajack.
ā€œDonā€™t worry. If worse comes to worse, Iā€™ll protect you. And come whatever may, weā€™ll figure out what to do next.ā€ Wabbajack says.
I feel a little relief hearing him say that. Next thing I know, Gourdsten runs up to me with a simple white robe. ā€œOh, whatā€™s this?ā€ I ask.
ā€œItā€™s a robe.ā€ Wabbajack says.
As I look at him, annoyed, Gourdsten says, ā€œRobe! Wear Robe!ā€
Mogsten then explains, ā€œYouā€™ll have to take off the rest of your gear as well and wear just that robe. Like I said, No unnecessary items. Only simple clothes.ā€
I look at the robe and say, ā€œOhā€¦ There is a changing room, right?ā€
ā€œThis way! Here, here!ā€ Gourdsten says as he pulls my arm.
ā€œAlright! Calm down.ā€ I say.
I follow him to a wooden stall. ā€œI guess I change in there, huh?ā€ I ask.
ā€œYes! Correct!ā€ Gourdsten says.
I sigh and open it up, step inside and change. Afterwards, after I step out in the robe, Gourdsten then says, ā€œShoes! Too!ā€
I look down and sigh. I then ask, ā€œCan that wait till we get back?ā€
ā€œShoes! Shoes! He repeats.
I then puff my face in annoyance as I sit down and take off my shoes. ā€œHappy?ā€ I ask.
He just jumps up and down and starts walking back.
All I can think is that itā€™s a good thing that the floor is at least wooden. I then get up, grab my stuff, and chase after him.
As we get back, Mogsten appears out of nowhere and points behind him as he says, ā€œCircle is done. All that is left is the blood of the subject.ā€
ā€œYouā€™re not going to slit my wrists, are you?ā€ I ask with a meek chuckle.
ā€œHeavenā€™s no!ā€ He says as he pulls out a syringe. He then grabs my wrist under these large sleeves and asks, ā€œOn three. Ready?ā€
I nervously nod my head. Just as he opens his mouth, I quickly say, ā€œWait! Why do we need blood again?ā€ Trying to delay the inevitable.
He looks at me and explains, ā€œA familiar is an extension of yourself. Quite literally. In order to cement that bond, it needs the blood of the host. That bond will allow you and your familiar to share experiences but, still allow autonomy for individual thought. You can live without it but, for it to retain its presence, it needs you alive.ā€
ā€œFascinating. Mind going into more detail?ā€ I say with a weak smile.
He then stabs the syringe into my wrist as he says, ā€œNo.ā€
ā€œOw!ā€ I yelp.
Just like that, he pulls the syringe out and empties it out into a bowl. ā€œAlright, here you go.ā€ He says as he hands me the bowl.
As I stare into a small bowl of my own blood, I ask, ā€œWhat am I supposed to do with this?ā€
ā€œNow, You stand at the center of the circle. As I activate the circle, the blood will start sloshing around in that bowl. Do NOT let a SINGLE drop fall out until the last item is floating. When the last item does start floating, pour the blood in the center and take four steps back. Got it?ā€ he explains.
I look over back to the circle and then look back to Mogsten and repeat, ā€œDonā€™t let it spill until the last object starts floating. When it does, pour it all out and take four steps back, right?ā€
He nods and says, ā€œCorrect.ā€ I think I then hear him mumble, ā€œI canā€™t believe I was convinced to do this.ā€ As he walks away.
I then take my place at the center of the circle. I am somewhat trembling at this point.
ā€œAre you sure, you want to do this?ā€ Mogsten asks again.
ā€œJust do it already!ā€ I yell back.
He lets out a sigh and starts mouthing something as he levels out his arms towards me.
I could feel the energy around me shifting and moving. I start seeing the objects that were placed start floating one by one. Slowly but surely. I then look down at the bowl and it is sloshing around. So far, not too bad. Around the time the fourth object starts floating, the blood really starts flying around to the point I have to actually adjust to make sure it doesnā€™t go flying out.
After a few more minutes the last object starts flying up. As soon as it stops moving, I pour the blood and take four steps back. The blood stops midair and forms a bubbling ball. It then rises up about level to my face. It stops bubbling and then a flash of blinding light envelops the room and I try to shield my eyes.
After a minute, I slowly open my eyes and lower my arms. What I see before me is something pretty weird.
Itā€™s in the shape of a sphere with a detached fox tail. The floating tail matches the fur of the body of the ā€œfamiliarā€, I guess. Its fur is a golden yellow with a white tip. The body looks like it has a line down the middle, with Very sharp fangs from the top row. It has fox ears and tiny fox paws and a fox nose. Itā€™s got lines for eyes? Either that or they are just closed. Between its ears, it has a lantern dangling from a line, kinda like an angler fish. The other side of that line looks like white gator leather and it has two tiny gator feet. As it yawns, I guess, it opens its massive mouth, showing all its fangs, top and bottom rows, and stretches its fox paws, revealing some nasty looking barbed claws. Itā€™s only as tall as, from the floor, up to my knee.

2024.05.21 18:04 Gazooonga Wayward II

Im glad y'all liked the last chapter. I'm going to continue this story and see where it goes. As usual, if you like this then make sure to like and comment: I really value your feedback. I'm also thinking of going back and editing some things, as I thought of some cool ideas that might make the story more interesting, mainly some Meta ideas to increase the depth of this litRPG. So make sure to go back and read the last chapter in a bit: some things may be different.
First
I gripped the rough leather hilt of my new sword tightly as I walked down the newly lit hall within this strange labyrinth. The air was dank and musty, and cobwebs hung from every corner. The dented blade glowed in the firelight, as did the breastplate, and I was just starting to warm up.
I didn't like this place: it made me feel uneasy. The loneliness was also crushing, but for some reason I was used to it. The weight of all my gear was also heavy, with all the weapons and rations causing my shoulders to ache, but I pressed forward. Something inside me insisted that this was familiar, and if I could do it before then I could do it now.
At first, the hall seemed unending, but after what felt like hours I finally reached a large, open room with a humble wooden throne in the center. The edges of the vaulted ceilings held great tapestries that had faded over time, the once magnificent artistry lost forever. Candelabras, urns, and braziers all forged from bronze and inlaid with different gems and precious metals were strewn about, and there was a gigantic bronze brazier at the center of the room, just in front of the throne.
On the throne sat a withered corpse wearing a crown of twisted branches, as well as rusted armor that had fused with flesh long ago. Simple wooden coffins lined the walls, six in total, each likely containing another corpse.
Then I noticed the brazier in the middle: it had long gone cold, the coals dead and waiting to be given life again by flame. But what worried me more was the burnt remains of the skeleton in the center: it was a reptilian thing, tall and robust judging by the size of the femurs, and it gripped a sword much like mineā€¦
Okay, I didn't like this place at all, not one bit. Whoever was here before me obviously met some horrible fate, maybe even burnt alive within the brazier, which was a fate I had no desire to experience.
Next to the throne was a chest, and anyone with common sense knew that opening the chest would probably be a bad idea. So I looked for something far more valuable: an exit. At the far end of the room we're a pair of double doors made from polished slate, and soni approached them. I ran my scaly hands across it and admiring the beautiful masonwork: engraved with elegant images of all sorts of events, such as men slaying giants, terrifying dragons burning down villages, great treasures hidden away, and a large mead hall with a boat as it's roof nestled on a hill, it was something out of legend. But that didn't matter, I just needed them to open so I could leave. They didn't budge from me pushing them, nor did they possess any handles or bars, so something else has to activate them.
I decided to see if I could get some answers out of the magic note turned journal. I pulled it out and began writing with the quill, the tip seemingly possessing an endless supply of ink. How do I open the doors?
Once again, my good hand began moving if it had a mind of its own, scribbling out a minimalist sentence that would probably be of no use to me. Open the chest.
I grumbled and wrote down another response. Will bad things happen if I open the chest?
More furious scribbling against my will. Bad things will happen either way.
Well, that was reassuring.
What will happen when I open the chest?
Bad things. I wanted to punt the book across the room. I just stuffed it back into my bag and growled again, the depth of my reptilian voice startling me. I was sure I wasn't supposed to sound like that, but I did. Maybe I was just overthinking this, and it was just a side effect of some kind of amnesia, but I really felt like I was in the wrong body.
I turned back to the throne and the chest next to it. It was a simple wooden thing with no lock, so it wouldn't be challenging to open at all. I walked towards it, sword in hand, anxiety shooting through me like electricity, and as I bent down to open it up I couldn't help but look behind me as I did so.
Then, with one simple motion, I opened it. There was more than I expected, but still not much, just a small pile of rough gold coins and a few assorted gems. I dipped my hand into the gold and pulled out a handful, the coins each easily the width of a golf ball and decently hefty too. Then I looked for a place to put them: if I was going to be put in danger for opening this damn chest, then I was going to get something out of it.
As I stuffed the gold into my pack, I heard creaking next to me, and I instinctively dropped my pack onto the ground and kicked it to the side before rolling away. The withered corpse lifted itself up from the wooden throne, a faint hissing escaping its lips as if its vocal chords no longer worked. Then it turned to me, eyes glowing red with hatred and jaw clenched. It balled its fists and deeper its hateful gaze before pointing at me and unleashing an ear-splitting hiss like that of copper pipes coming apart. I lifted up my longsword and held it in a defensive stance, backing away slowly as my ears rang. Then I felt a bony hand on my shoulder.
I spun around and swung the blade, vivisecting another corpse halfway. All the other coffins were bursting open, and the angered dead were hobbling out, some holding rusted and chipped weapons, others simply meandering towards me with the same hatred in their eyes as the first. I was surrounded.
I swung my sword and cut oneā€™s head off, the otherwise dry and leathery flesh of its neck giving way to my old longsword. Then I sliced through the knee of another, sending it sprawling to the ground before I stomped its head into pieces. That left four, including the one on the throne. That one stood back, glaring at me and waving its hands as if conducting an orchestra, its armored robes flowing despite the lack of ventilation. It must be the one controlling the undead.
I matched forward, sword lifted again and swung at the leader of the undead. It blocked the strike with its armored bracer and swiped at me, bony hands scraping against my breastplate but also imbuing me with an overwhelming weakness to the touch, as if I hadn't slept for days. With a grunt, I kicked him back and onto the floor, but the rest of the dead seemed to fall into a frenzy, charging at me as if they were rabid ghouls. I needed to end this, and I needed to end it now.
I impaled the first undead and kicked him off alongside their ringleader, then slammed the pommel of by sword into the forehead of the next with a spiteful roar that seemed to charge the air with static, crushing the undeadā€™s skull inward and releasing the energy trapped within as if crumbled to the floor. The third swiped at my arm, causing an intense cold to run through me and a horrible pain to erupt from the deceptively small laceration, as if maggots were chewing on my flesh. I roared again and swung diagonally, vivisecting the decrepit thing all at once.
That left the composer. It stood back up and seemed even angrier than before, as if it had actually cared for those skeletons. Then I heard a voice behind its bestial whispers, a voice that almost soundedā€¦ pained. ā€œHadvar, BĆørge, Aegilief, Gunhild, Halfdan, Ivar! Do not fall, not to this dragonā€™s bastard!ā€ It seemed to exclaim, but its cries seemed to fall on deaf ears as the corpses were no more, what remained of the flesh disintegrating into nothing more than ash, leaving only dirty bones behind.
ā€œYou shouldn't have attacked me.ā€ I said behind grit fangs, my body still recovering from the effects of their icy touch. But no matter how much I tried to justify it to myself, it always felt like a weak response: I was probably plundering some poor guy's tomb, and then proceeded to kill all his friends to boot. I was in the wrong here, but I wasn't just going to be trapped in this shit hole of a tomb forever.
Then I looked at the brazier, which was now lit and burning, the otherwise bleached white bones of the reptile thing within coated in fresh soot. They would've killed me, or I would've starved. And they were already dead, anyway: for all I knew the undead here were held together by nothing more than old memories and whatever terrible magic possessed this place. I wasn't going to die yet, I at least wanted to see the sun one last time.
ā€œSorry about you and your friends, but I'm not going to die here today,ā€ I said, trying to seem apologetic, ā€œI've only got one shot, or so I've been told.ā€ I matched forward again, unwavering, and busted him in the head with my pommel before slicing off his arm at the joint when he tried to reach out for me again, hissing with anger. Then, as I bullied him backwards to put some length between us, I finally kicked him one last time and jammed the end of my sword into his empty eye socket, sending the blade through his rotting head and out the back. He let out one last hiss before going limp, whatever magical nonsense holding him together dissipating as his body crumpled and his bones unknitted themselves.
I dropped the sword with a grunt and sank to my knees. My head felt like it was stuffed with cotton, and my stomach was churning. The horrible sickness the undead gave me when it swiped at me seemed to be winding down, the pain in my arm dull and more distracting than painful, but the unbearable cold and discomfort was still coursing through me. I needed to get out of this wretched place. This was a tomb, right? Maybe that door led to some kind of exit to the outdoors, or at least a pathway to it.
I forced myself back up on my feet, retrieved my bag and filled it with the rest of the treasure from the chest, and strapped everything on my back once again. I would probably want to find some kind of civilization, maybe a place where this gold would hold some value, because then maybe I could use it to find some answers.
Behind me, the doors began to crumble with a glowing purple light, as if the magic that has sealed it had been broken with the death of the undead on the throne, and I could see some semblance of light. I rushed towards it, only to find myself in an even colder area than before. The air was frigid and filled with a thick, looking fog that seemed to sap the strength out of me. It felt like an early spring morning, when it would go just above freezing and the rain had come in droves overnight, leaving behind the mist. Spruces, pines and other evergreen trees towered around me, and the forest floor was coated in thick roots, mossy rocks, vines, and dead evergreen needles. A dirt path that had long been overtaken by the forest stretched away from the tomb I had emerged from, leading me away from this place.

2024.05.21 17:59 guerrillagrip my first week post-FESS journal

I had chronic sinusitis for 2 years after a complication from wisdom teeth removal. symptoms were always pretty mild but CT scans showed my entire right sinus was full of goo. the doc did FESS on my right maxillary sinus to drain the infection and trimmed down some tissue to help with future drainage. a pretty limited procedure compared to many, but hereā€™s my first week of recovery for anyone going through something similar!
day of surgery
ā€¢ I made sure I went with an ENT/hospital I liked/trusted. originally had my procedure scheduled somewhere else but decided to switch last minuteā€” very glad I did
ā€¢ they had me show up 2hrs before the procedure and took me to my pre-op room. I got into a gown, socks, and hair net. they took some urine, got me on the IV, took vitals. my BP was a little high (probably from anxiety) but didnā€™t cause alarm. closer to the surgery time I asked them to put some drugs in my IV to help with that
ā€¢ before surgery, I got to speak with a nurse, the anesthesiologist, and my ENT/surgeon. they asked me some questions and answered any questions I had. anesthesiologist looked into my throat to make sure he had a clear path for the breathing tube. (this was my first time having one of those so I was a lil nervous. all goodā€” in and out while I was asleep)
ā€¢ when it was time for surgery nurses came and wheeled my bed into the op room. they got me laid out flat. I was still conscious at this time so I had small talk with my doc and the team for a little. somewhere in the middle of that I was outā€” no breathing mask, no countdown, the IV took me out before i noticed.
ā€¢ suddenly regained consciousness in what I think was the same room. it felt like coming back from a nap so naturally I kept my eyes closed at first. then someone asked me if I was ready to go and I said yeah, so they wheeled me to my post-op room. thatā€™s where they brought my mom back to meet me (she had been with me in the pre-op room). they gave me a Sprite and some crackers to check for nausea.
ā€¢ another nurse came in to give me a pain pill (hydrocodone) and my post-op packet. he took my IV out and told me I could get dressed. after I was dressed they sent a wheelchair for me and another nurse wheeled me out to my momā€™s car.
ā€¢ had some moderate pain for the first couple hours, but I took 800mg ibuprofen when I got home and I basically had no pain after that. a steady little nosebleed until I went to bed. some slight rasp/throat clearing from the breathing tube but overall not much soreness.
ā€¢ took a hydro before bed and also 4hrs later when I woke up in the middle of the night. slept with my head elevated just as a precautionā€” I didnā€™t have that much pressure. had pretty broken sleep, inside of my nose became dry/painful from all the dried blood and being advised not to stick anything in there. nothing unbearable tho. put a hot compress on my nose for a few minutes and that helped enough to get me back to sleep
day 1
ā€¢ no real pain or pressure in the AM. some mild discomfort from the dried blood at first. nosebleed wasnā€™t as constant and came out clearer. took 800mg ibuprofen when I woke up
ā€¢ back to eating regular food. I only ate soup, crackers, and pudding post-op the previous day just to re-acclimate my stomach, but had no real food restrictions. just nothing spicy and whatever I felt comfortable eating
ā€¢ started post-op treatment 24hrs after the procedure. used my steam inhaler as needed and started sinus rinses 2x a day (used Brita water for the inhaler and distilled water for the rinses). doc told me I was allowed to lightly blow my nose after 24hrs. only blew during my sinus rinse
ā€¢ more congestion on this day, mild headache after sinus rinse. alternated between ibuprofen and Tylenol every 3-4 hrs. hydro before bed
day 2
ā€¢ woke up with a little more pressure in my face this day. slept through the previous night without much issue
ā€¢ no more nosebleeds but some blood and mucus while doing sinus rinses. during the rinses I had some yellow mucus and couple blood clots but mostly clear
ā€¢ more tired on this day, took an afternoon nap. think my body was trying to get back into regular REM cycles
day 3-6
ā€¢ same routineā€” pain pills as needed, steam inhale when I felt like it, and sinus rinse a couple times a day
ā€¢ had some slight congestion and cheek pressure, but nothing all that different than pre-surgery
ā€¢ sinus rinses were uncomfortable at first but got easier over time. some water would get stuck in my sinuses and come out sometimes hours later
day 7
ā€¢ had my first post-op appointment/debridement. canā€™t even lie it was mad uncomfortable but on an actual pain scale probably like a 7/10. lasted only about 3-5 mins total. the camera was sharp, the area was still sensitive, and the suctioning was crazy to hear and feel. I also think the numbing spray gun malfunctioned so it certainly wouldā€™ve been easier if Iā€™d been numb, but I did take two Tylenol before the appointment
ā€¢ Iā€™m doing the rinses for another week and then going for another post-op in 3 weeks
if you read all the way here I hope this helps!

2024.05.21 17:22 Fun-Yogurtcloset521 The Locust Man

PART 1:
Every town has their own version of ā€œThe Boogeymanā€. A monster, cryptid, phantom, whatever you want to call it, itā€™s all essentially the same thing- just a scary story they tell kids in an attempt to get them to behave. An urban legend is just a life lesson disguised as a horror story after all. For us folk living up in the tiny and once prosperous gold-mining town of Trillium, ours was known simply as The Locust Man. Now, let me start by saying, I realize how ridiculous that name must sound to you. ā€œThe Locust Manā€?? Pfttā€¦Whatā€™s he do, besides get stuck in the grill of someoneā€™s pick-up truck. Destroy some crops? Oooh, he sounds real scary... yeah, I know. But yet, as I sit here today 20 years after the fact - a grown woman whoā€™s wiser, stronger, and even more grounded in reality than she was at 12, I still hesitate to even write down that name.
As a young child I had always thought it to be a little weird that our town was called Trillium, considering I had never seen a single one growing there. If you donā€™t know, a trillium is a small flower, usually white but they come in other color varieties as well, with three pedals and a bright yellow center. They sort of look like if you took a lily and tore off every other pedal playing ā€œHe loves me, he loves me notā€. In school, about 2nd grade or so, we were taught everything about this elusive flower Iā€™d never seen in real life, and told how proud our town was to be named after it. Trillium, Colorado was established in 1922 - A new town born in the wake of a great tragedy which befell the town that had previously sat in the same location. For us, and those that came before us, the trillium was supposed to be a symbol of hope. Knowing all that I know now, that sentiment almost makes me want to laugh - in a morbid way.
Growing up in a small, mostly isolated town, there really wasnā€™t much for a kid to do. Youā€™d have to drive 45 minutes to get to the closest mall and movie theater. The high school kids would usually all hang out at the roller rink downtown or at the old run-down burger joint called Slimā€™s that sat across it. But at that age, I wasnā€™t allowed to go hang out there by myself yet and for me, going with my parents tagging along wasnā€™t an option I was open to. My neighborhood was on a long dead end road leading up to a large patch of woods that separated the main part of town from the abandoned mine. The old trail the miners used was still accessible up until a point, and so me and the other kids from my street would hang out in those woods all the time. We had a ā€œsecret spotā€ which was, what we thought at the time, about half way through the woods, 10 steps away from a small shallow creek that pretty much ran the length of the area. Rain Creek, we called it. There was a small clearing there, and we had created our own little clubhouse using old milk crates as supports, half- broken wooden pallets as walls, along with some old lawn chairs one of the neighbors was throwing out one day. I made my contribution by bringing a tarp we had in our basement that served as the roof of our establishment. Our parents didnā€™t love the idea of five 10 to 12 year olds running around in the woods by ourselves, but as long as we stayed within earshot and made it back before the streetlights came on, they probably figured it was safer than us being across town galavanting unsupervised.
It was me, Lacey, Devin, Mikey and Michelle. We were all best friends - pretty much inseparable, except the boys werenā€™t invited to the girlsā€™ sleepovers and vise versa. Everyday after school, weā€™d get dropped off by the bus at the very beginning of our road, and it was a running joke between the Rain Street Gang (as we liked to call ourselves) for all of us to try and run off the bus as quickly as possible, while me, Lacey and Devin would all yell in unison ā€˜Last two home are some rotten eggs!!ā€™, as Mikey and Michelle tried to push past us to get a head start. The aforementioned two were siblings, and lived in the very last house on our row right next to the woods, so theyā€™d always get home last, regardless of their efforts. Although, the year that Mikey got a pair of Heelys for Christmas he finally got his edge over the rest of us, leaving Michelle to be the lone ā€œrotten eggā€ until the next summer when one of his wheels broke off. The whole point of it all was just to get home and get our chores and homework done as fast as possible, so we could meet up at Mikey and Michelleā€™s house with enough daylight left to make our trek into the woods and back - together as a group. All five of us had made a pact to never visit the clubhouse without all members present, although us girls always had a sneaking suspicion that the boys thought themselves exempt from that rule. They, after all, were the ones that had discovered the spot in the first place, and not to mention, did most of the physical labor of dragging our provisions out there. Me and Lacey initially only heard about the spot a day after the boys found it; Michelle had walked into Mikeyā€™s room in the middle of him and Devin talking about it, and immediately relayed the message to us. Michelle wasnā€™t necessarily more loyal to the girls than the boys, she was just the youngest among us and honestly couldnā€™t resist blurting out any mildly relevant information she thought she might have, in an effort to be included. But in that regard, if the boys had ever gone out there on their own, they wouldā€™ve had to be extremely sneaky about it, because Michelleā€™s number one objective in life was to gather any piece of intel she could. It was a seemingly normal Saturday morning when we learned our suspicions about the boys may have been warranted.
I had slept over at Laceyā€™s house the night before. We had just woken up and were still sitting on her bed discussing our possible plans for the day, when Michelle busted through the door with a look on her face that immediately told us she had finally gotten a hold of some juicy information, before she could even open her mouth to stutter out, ā€œYou-you-you guyssss, guess w-w-what!?!ā€ Lacey gestured the nail file that was in her hand toward her, raising her eyebrows bluntly as Michelle tried to catch her breath. ā€œSoā€¦ Devin came to sleep over last night, annnnnd I was pretending to go to the bathroom so I could spy on them. Seeeeee, I was supposed to be sleeping but I -ā€œ ā€œUghh come on Michelle, get to it! Whatā€™d you hear?ā€ Lacey snapped ā€œUghh okay okay. So, I heard the boys talking, andddddā€¦. theyā€™re planning to go explore the old mine today!!ā€ ā€œAlright Michelle! Good spying!ā€ I chuckled, trying to encourage her after Laceyā€™s impatience. Lacey rolls her eyes, then immediately stands up. She takes the scrunchie off her wrist, ties her long blonde hair into a messy bun, and simply said, ā€œLetā€™s go.ā€ ā€œLacey..ā€ I said ā€œWhat??ā€ She responds as if she hadnā€™t registered the tone of my voice at all. As I opened my mouth to begin explaining all the logical and practical reasons why even if the boys were stupid enough to go play around somewhere dangerous, we shouldnā€™t be, Michelle exclaims, ā€œThatā€™s where the Locust Man lives!!ā€ I close my mouth in defeat, as I know Lacey will take this nonsense as a challenge, and because of that, no amount of my warnings concerning actual dangers would have any effect on her decision. Lacey dismisses her comment as she attempts to shove her foot into one of her new pink sneakers that she refuses to admit are too small for her. ā€œPshhh, donā€™t be such a baby Michelle, heā€™s not real, you do know that right?ā€ Michelle crinkled her face and yelled back, ā€œYes he is Lacey! He is!! And th-th- thatā€™s where he lives, and he eats kids that go there!ā€ Lacey laughs at her and says ā€œOh yeah? You still believe in Santa clause too? What about the tooth fairy?ā€ Michelle looked down at her shoes, and although she could admittedly be annoying, I found myself feeling bad for her. ā€œCome on Lacey, sheā€™s just scared.ā€ Lacey shot me a look like she was expecting me to burst into laughter, but I just gave her a smirk and a shrug, and she rolled her eyes and said ā€œGet dressed.ā€
We walked in silence toward the end of the road, though the reasons for all three differed drastically. Laceyā€™s was determination and resolve, mine was comtemptousness and defeat, and Michelleā€™s was just fear. I found myself half-way hoping the boys had left already, but as we approached the driveway we caught them just as they were about to step off the porch.
ā€œHey!!ā€ Lacey yelled, in her trademark cheerleader cadence. ā€œWhere do you boys think youā€™re going without us?ā€. Mikey let a groan and rolled his eyes, while Devin said through a coy smile, ā€œWell, we were actually just heading out to go to find you girls.ā€ ā€œLiar.ā€ Lacey snapped, quickly wiping the grin off Devinā€™s face. ā€œMichelle already blabbed- we know where you two are going and weā€™re coming too.ā€ The boys looked at each other, then Mikey shot Michelle an angry look as she tried to shrink herself behind me, and said, ā€œFine, whatever, but no cry baby snitches allowed!!ā€ Michelle then proceeded to prove both of his accusations correct by yelling back, ā€œI am not a cry baby!! Iā€™m telling mom if you donā€™t let me come with you!!ā€ At that point I finally spoke up. ā€œAlright, listen.ā€ I said sternly, then once I had their attention I lowered my voice a bit to say, ā€œJust for the record, I think us going to that grody old mine is a dumb idea and a big waste of time, but if one of us goes, we all go. Thatā€™s the deal, so make your decisions.ā€ Lacey folded her arms in solidarity beside me, and with that we all had an unspoken understanding. So, with the boys out ahead leading the way, we headed toward the tree line.
As we entered the woods, I felt a sense of dread wash over me - but to be fair, as a preteen emo kid who had already reached an adult level of cynicism, I felt a certain level of dread towards almost everything in life. So take my premonition with a grain of salt, but for some reason, this feltā€¦ different. I remember the woods being abnormally quiet that day. It took some time for me to even notice, but as soon as I did, I interrupted the mindless chatter going on to say,
ā€œWhere are all the freakinā€™ birds?ā€ Everyone turned to look at me as if Iā€™d completely lost my mind. ā€œUhhhā€¦ What are you talking about?ā€ Devin asked me. I pointed up toward the treetops. ā€œListenā€¦. ā€ They all looked up, then looked around at each other in confusion. ā€œEvery time weā€™ve ever been in these woods, thereā€™s always birds chirping back and forth. Weā€™ve been walking almost 5 minutes now and I havenā€™t heard a single bird, have you guys?ā€ ā€œDamn, yeah, that is weird.ā€ Mikey agreed. ā€œThey probably all just migrated!!ā€ Devin goofily offered. ā€œThatā€™s stupid Devin, itā€™s spring. If anything, there should be more birds here, not less you moron.ā€ Lacie argued. Devin flipped Lacie off, which was the best rebuttal he could usually come up with, and then turned toward me and said, ā€œOkay whatever, whatā€™s your point exactly?ā€ ā€œJust that - ā€œ I looked over to Mikey, then back at Devin. ā€œItā€™s weird.ā€ I didnā€™t want to say what I was actually thinking. That the woods being too quiet was never a good thing. That when birds arenā€™t chirping, it could mean thereā€™s a predator nearby. Besides, I was pretty confident that the boys, having both been in the scouts, knew what I knew, so saying it out loud would only serve to annoy Lacie and further frighten Michelle. Mikey broke his gaze that had been fixed on me, and while scanning our surroundings he said, ā€œLetā€™s stop by the clubhouse on the way.ā€ With a nod from me, we continued. When we arrived at our pit stop, Lacey hobbled over to the closest lawn chair and plopped herself down in it. ā€œUghhh, my feet are killing me!!ā€ ā€œI wonder why.ā€ I mutter under my breath. ā€œExcuse me, what was that?ā€ ā€œJust saying. Those shoes are gonna be the death of you Lace, you can barely walk in them.ā€ ā€œPshhh, shut up. They just need to be broken-in okay? Youā€™re just jealous cuz youā€™re still wearing your dirty old Vans from last year.ā€ ā€œOooh yeah, you got me there. I am so sad I donā€™t have a pair of ugly pink Sketchers that donā€™t fit me.ā€ She stuck her tongue out at me and we both laughed. I was just about the only person who could go toe to toe with Laceyā€™s sass. Itā€™s part of the reason we ended up being best friends, besides being neighbors. In regard to style, personality and interests, we were almost polar opposites. But when it came to humor we were equals. And more importantly, we both had a mutual understanding when it came to our differences- I was me and she was her, and neither of us felt the need to try and make the other one be more like us. Besides, I was the only person who had ever really stood up to Lacey and didnā€™t take any of her crap, so I think she respected that. While that exchange had been going on, Michelle had started picking tiny pink flowers, and the boys were rummaging in the clubhouse for something. I yelled in their direction, ā€œHey! Big Mike and Dirty D!!ā€ Me and Lacey giggled and she mouthed the word ā€œbigā€ with air quotation marks. They didnā€™t respond, so I walked over to the entryway and looked in. They were standing with their backs to me while looking down at an open metal box, and Mikey was reaching to grab whatever was in it. As he stood back up, I could see what it was. ā€œWhat the fuck Mikey, seriously?ā€ Hearing me cuss, Lacey and Michelle crowded in behind me. ā€œChill, itā€™s just a BB gun.ā€ ā€œI know itā€™s a BB gun Michael, what are you doing with it, and why is it here?ā€ I was livid at the thought that he might be coming out here and shooting at animals just to be a shithead. I expected something like that from a goober like Devin, but not Mikey. Michelle butted in, ā€œIā€™m telling mom!!!ā€ ā€œNice try, dad knows I have it.ā€ He looked at me and softened his tone. ā€œItā€™s for protection, just in case we come across a black bear, or some weirdo creep out here. Seriouslyā€¦ itā€™s just to scare off something, not hurt it.ā€ He knew how I felt about killing animals, especially for no good reason. A lot of people out here are poor and hunt for food, which I could accept as a reality. But hurting animals just for fun is psycho behavior, so I was relieved to hear him dispel my fear; I really didnā€™t want to have to hate him. ā€œDo you even know how to shoot that thing?ā€ Lacey asked. ā€œYeah, my dad showed me.ā€ Devin clapped his hands together, making us all jump and himself laugh. ā€œWell alright then, letā€™s get going!ā€ I turned to Michelle, still holding the flowers. ā€œYou okay?ā€ She nodded. ā€œIf you want me to walk back with you, I can.ā€ I was slightly hoping sheā€™d say yes so Iā€™d have an excuse to get out of this excursion, but she just shook her head and forced a smile. I knew she was scared, but she was just too curious. Maybe I was too.
We walked for what felt like half an hour. The trees had gotten more dense and the path narrowed from the overgrowth. Still no birdsong. I kept scanning the area in search of any sign of life other than us. Looking for movement of creatures scurrying away, listening for the sound of rustling as we passed, hoping for a squirrel, a lizard, even a bug. Nothing.
ā€œHow much further is this damn thing?ā€ Lacey groaned. Mikey answered without even turning around. ā€œWe should be coming up on it any time now.ā€ ā€œYou said that like 10 minutes ago.ā€ ā€œYeah, and now weā€™re like 10 minutes closer to it. And hey guess what, you insisted on inviting yourself - so suck it up buttercup.ā€ ā€œHahahaha!ā€ Devin laughed like a maniac at Mikeyā€™s quip, while Lacey folded her arms and for once in her life didnā€™t have a snappy comeback. This time however, I did. ā€œWell we really only came along to make sure you idiots didnā€™t kill yourselves.ā€ ā€œOh, so you girls came out here with us to be our protectors, huh?ā€ Devin laughed. ā€œEhh, more like babysitters.ā€ Needless to say, I was flipped off for that statement. We rounded the next bend and suddenly all came to an abrupt stop one after another, starting with Mikey. Devin positioned himself beside him and let out a disappointed groan. ā€œShit Mikey!ā€ A huge tree had fallen and was blocking the trail completely. There was no way we could climb over it because of all the leaves and branches - weā€™d have to go around it, which meant leaving the safety of the trail and crossing Rain Creek twice to get back to it. ā€œSeriously???ā€ Lacey exclaimed. ā€œMaybe itā€™s a sign that we shouldnā€™t be going.ā€ I shrugged. Mikey didnā€™t seem fazed by the obstruction at all. In fact, he seemed more confident. More calm. More sure of his intended mission. ā€œItā€™s fine, weā€™ll just go around.ā€ Michelle, who had been mostly quiet this whole time, finally broke her fear induced silence. ā€œWe are NOT supposed to leave the tr-tr-trail Michael! We could get lost!ā€ ā€œWe arenā€™t gonna get lost Michelle, I have a compass. Plus, itā€™s literally just a few paces that way, then we cross the creek and circle back once we pass the tree and weā€™re right back on the trail.ā€ ā€œOh you have got to be kidding meā€ Lacey said, ā€œIā€™m not treading through that nasty water!ā€ ā€œYeah Mikey, what about Laceyā€™s brand new shoes??ā€ I laughed, and she playfully slapped me in the arm. Mikeyā€™s patience was wearing thin with us. ā€œLook, we already walked this far - if we turn back now, weā€™ve wasted the whole day for nothing. If you girls wanna be lame and turn around, then go for it - but me and Dev are going.ā€ Thatā€™s all Lacey needed. A challenge to accept; someone to prove wrong. ā€œIā€™ll show you lame.ā€ She pushed past the boys and lead the way into the thick brush towards Rain Creek. It wasnā€™t very wide across, and there were lots of fallen limbs and large rocks spread throughout it. The current was barely that of a trickle, and the depth was no more than knee deep for us. It was definitely doable - just an inconvenience. And of course, one more ominous obstacle lying directly in our path. Another hint from the universe telling us to turn around. We didnā€™t listen. Lacey placed one foot on the closest limb and pushed down a few times to test its sturdiness. ā€œI got this.ā€ She stepped out onto it with both feet, then shimmied sideways until she was close enough to the large exposed rock in the middle of the creek, and hopped onto it. She turned around with a full grin and said, ā€œComing?ā€ Mikey made his way across the limb as Lacey hopped onto a different limb which led her to the other side of the creek. Devin followed, then me, and then it was Michelleā€™s turn. ā€œIā€™m scared to fall in!ā€ Of course she is, I should have made her go before me. ā€œItā€™s okay Michelle, itā€™s easy!ā€ I reassured her. She didnā€™t look convinced in the slightest. ā€œCome on Chelle, weā€™re leaving you!ā€ Mikey yelled, already walking away. ā€œNooo!! Iā€™m coming! Wait!ā€ She made it across, but instead of just walking like everyone else did, she got down on her hands and knees and gripped the limb as if it were the only thing in between her and a 50 foot drop to the ground, which was funny to see but prolonged the whole process further. After all, we were about to have to do all of this again. Next go round went a lot smoother. The creek was more shallow here, and there were a whole lot more stepping rocks and debris built up. Having just crossed successfully a few minutes ago, we were all more confident in our abilities, including Michelle - who this time we made go first. ā€œJust walk across like itā€™s a bridge! You got this!!ā€, we all cheered for her, and then clapped when she made it to the other side. Before we knew it we were back on the trail, and it wasnā€™t long after that we finally arrived at our intended destination.
We all stopped and stared at it for a minute, carefully examining the dilapidated exterior of the place that had brought both prosperity and destruction upon our town. Mikey bent down, picked up a rock and threw it into the entrance. We heard it bounce a few times before it stopped.
ā€œJust to make sure nothingā€™s in there.ā€ he turned around to clarify. ā€œDid anyone think to bring a flashlight?ā€ I asked. ā€œItā€™s dark as hell in there.ā€ I was hoping for just one more reason not to go. Devin reached into his cargo shorts pocket and pulled out a small keychain-sized flashlight, smiling with the satisfaction of finally being useful. ā€œOkay, Mikeyā€™ll hold the gun, Iā€™ll shine the light and you girls follow behind us. Letā€™s go.ā€ Mikey shifted the BB gun from its position of resting on his shoulder, to holding the barrel in his left hand and the butt in his right; trying his best to emulate a soldierā€™s stance. Something his dad had taught him Iā€™m sure. We ducked down a bit to enter. ā€œHow far in we going?ā€ Lacey asked. ā€œUntil we see something cool.ā€ Mikey answered. I turned around to check on Michelle, still hovering in the doorway. ā€œYou coming?ā€ I could see in her eyes that fear had finally gotten the better of her, and curiosity had taken a backseat. With wide eyes she shook her head. ā€œThe-the Locust Man lives in there.ā€, she tried to whisper. ā€œI knew you were gonna be a baby about this!ā€ Mikey yelled. I crouched down and put my hand on her shoulder. Against my better judgment, I say ā€œHow bout you just wait here for us and pick some more flowers. We wonā€™t be long, thereā€™s nothing in there, I promise. Just.. donā€™t move from this spot and weā€™ll be right back, okay?ā€ I could feel her unease, but she seemed to accept my reassurance nonetheless. ā€œOkay.ā€ I smiled, then stood up and looked down at my watch to check the time. 12:46 PM. I turned and headed into the darkness, trying to catch up with everyone else. I didnā€™t feel good about leaving Michelle, but I didnā€™t feel good about letting the rest of them go in there alone either. And if Iā€™m being honest, maybe a little part of me wanted to see what was in there too. When I caught up to Lacey she asked, ā€œWhereā€™s Michelle?ā€ ā€œStayed behind at the entrance, she was too scared. I told her to pick flowers and wait there for us.ā€ ā€œPshh, figures.ā€ ā€œYeah. Howā€™s your feet?ā€ ā€œAt this point, numb actually.ā€ It was so dark in there that even Devinā€™s rinky dink flashlight was illuminating the area enough for me to start taking a closer look at my surroundings. I looked around at the rock walls, they were covered in what looked like orange mold and green algae. There was a slight breeze coming in from the entrance, but the whole place just had a staleness to it. The boys stopped and turned around as we arrived at the first curve. ā€œSo ladies, what do you think? Cool huh?ā€ Devin asked excitedly. ā€œSmells like a fart in here.ā€ I said.
The most dangerous thing about exploring an old mine wasnā€™t getting lost in the maze of tunnels, or tripping on the rusted tracks and slamming your head against the wall - it was something simply referred to as bad air. Pockets of still air that have dangerously low levels of oxygen, the old men in town would call it ā€œblack dampā€. There was also something produced from the old chemicals they once used called ā€œstink dampā€, which smelled like rotten eggs. Both were lethal.
ā€œI wonder if thereā€™s dead bodies in here!ā€ ā€œUh, Devā€¦ weā€™re gonna be the dead bodies in here if we go in too far. I wasnā€™t just making a joke, you know that rotten egg smell can mean bad air.ā€ Mikey interjected. ā€œThe entrance isnā€™t far behind us, thereā€™s still enough fresh air coming in. We wonā€™t go in too far, letā€™s just get to the end of this tunnel where it splits off and look around a bit, then weā€™ll turn around.ā€ The fork in the tunnel really wasnā€™t that much further, and even though I knew once we rounded this curve I wouldnā€™t be able to see the entrance behind me anymore, I decided what the hell. Maybe a hundred more steps, then we can finally turn around and this whole dumb situation would be closer to being over with. When we got there, we looked down the length of the connecting tunnels each way. Everything looked unusually identical in its deterioration. I could see how someone could easily get disoriented and lost down here. ā€œHelloooooā€¦ā€ Mikey yelled to the left, his voice echoing through the corridor. Devin turned to the opposite direction and called out, ā€œHey yo, Locust Man!! You in here?ā€ We all giggled, which made me think about Michelle, still waiting at the entrance for us, alone in the woods. I looked down at my watch. 12:46 PM. ā€œHey what the f-ā€œ My cuss word was interrupted by a loud bang that came from the passageway Devin had just been hollering into. We all froze. I didnā€™t have time to process that my watch had stopped right as we entered the tunnel, or that Michelle had been left alone for who knows how long now, or that we had just heard what sounded like a support beam crashing to the ground, because next came a horrifying screeching buzzing sound. It sounded distant at first, but was quickly increasing in volume. We silently looked around at each other and backed away stunned at what we were hearing. Mikey never took his eyes off the tunnel though, and slowly he began to raise the BB gun to firing position. Without even thinking, I grabbed the barrel and pushed it downward. He quickly tore his eyes away from his target to look at me. I shook my head and managed to barely choke out the word, ā€œExplosion.ā€ He nodded and I let go. I looked down at the gun in his hands, and seeing his finger had already been on the trigger, I realized how lucky it was that I didnā€™t make him shoot himself in the foot. All of a sudden, the noise stopped. ā€œWhat the hell was that?ā€ Lacey asked. ā€œI donā€™t know, nothing good.ā€ I said. ā€œLetā€™s just get the fuck out of here before this whole place caves in on us or something.ā€ Another loud bang erupted from the right, extremely close to us. ā€œShit!!!ā€ We all turned around and ran as fast as we could back toward the entrance. Devin tried to push past me, but as he did my elbow knocked the flashlight out of his hand. ā€œMy flashlight!!!ā€ ā€œLeave it!ā€ Mikey shouted ā€œThe turn is right here, we wonā€™t need it!ā€ We rounded the corner, and using what little light there was illuminating from the entrance to guide us back, we ran like our lives depended on it. And they may have- none of us dared to look back, not like we would have been able to see anything anyway. When we finally made it out, we were all completely out of breath. I felt like I was going to throw up. I have to admit though, once we had made it back to safety I felt a rush of adrenaline like I had just had a near death experience. That feeling quickly faded into sheer panic when I looked around and realized Michelle was nowhere to be seen. ā€œUh, whereā€™s Michelle?ā€ Mikey asked me. ā€œI told her to stay right here, she canā€™t be very farā€¦ Michelle!!!!ā€ We all called her name, as loud as we could. No answer, no sign of her anywhere. ā€œAlright look, she probably went off a little further looking for flowers to pick.ā€ I tried to rationalize. ā€œLetā€™s just split off in 4 directions and walk in a straight line while calling for her. Sheā€™s bound to hear one of us.ā€ Everyone agreed, and even though I appeared outwardly as the level-headed calm person you need to take control in an emergency, inside I was petrified that something had happened to her, and that it would be my fault. I took the east, and headed out. It didnā€™t take too long before I passed a large tree and saw her sitting down behind it, looking at something on the ground. ā€œMichelle! Oh thank god!! Didnā€™t you hear us calling for you??ā€ She didnā€™t answer me, or even turn around. ā€œMichelle, didnā€™t I tell you to stay by the entrance and not move?!?ā€ My relief was quickly turning into annoyance as she continued to ignore me. I walked up closer to see what she was looking at, and my mouth dropped in awe of what she had found. It was a single white trillium.
They say it takes 8 years for a trillium plant to produce a flower, and conditions have to be just right for it to bloom. Thatā€™s what makes them so special and rare. I stared down at it almost in a trance, like I was seeing a mythical creature. Michelle slowly reached out her hand towards it and I snapped out of it.
ā€œNo!!ā€ I grabbed her by the arm and she finally turned around to look at me. ā€œIf you pick the flower, the plant will die.ā€ She ripped her arm away from my grasp and whined, ā€œBut I want to show my mom!ā€ We heard Mikey calling from the north and I cupped my hands over my mouth to yell back, ā€œI found her, sheā€™s over here!!ā€ I looked back at her. ā€œNo Michelle, come on, you can just tell her about it when we get back home.ā€ I had enough, I was beyond ready to go and we still had at least another 45 minutes of walking to even get back to the clubhouse; an hour if Michelle kept up her crap. I grabbed her arm again and pulled her up to a standing position, looking back at the trillium as I walked her away. Mikey caught up to us, breathless but trying to hide his concern. ā€œYou little shit, we should have left you out here! What the hell were you doing?ā€ I let go of her arm and she walked toward Mikey. ā€œShe was trying to pick a flower over there.ā€ ā€œIt was a trillium!!ā€ Michelle said, with the biggest smile on her face. ā€œWait, really?ā€ He looked at me in disbelief. Before I could respond, a blood curdling scream echoed through the forest, coming from the west. It was Lacey. My heart dropped into my stomach and once again, every molecule in my body went into full blown panic mode. This time, I couldnā€™t contain my composure. ā€œLaceyyyyyy!!!!!ā€ A panicked shriek erupted from my lungs and I took off running. Mikey grabbed Michelle and sprinted after us. The trees became a blur; I didnā€™t even feel all the scratches and scrapes. Had she come across a coyote? A mountain lion? A bear? I didnā€™t even stop to think about the danger I might be about to come in contact with, I just ran. And then I found her. She was lying on the ground, holding her left foot. ā€œLacey!!ā€ I said, trying to choke back the tears that were building up. ā€œI think I twisted my ankle!!ā€ ā€œOh god damn it, you bitch.ā€ I struggled to catch my breath. ā€œI thought you were dead.ā€ ā€œI might as well be, I have cheerleading practice on Monday!ā€ Mikey and Michelle caught up to us. ā€œWhat happened?ā€ He asked ā€œSheā€™s being a drama queen, she just rolled her ankle.ā€ I was angry. ā€œCan you get up?ā€ He asked her. She was able to stand, but as soon as she tried to put any pressure on her foot at all, she screamed in pain. We spotted Devin running over from the south as he was yelling out, ā€œHey yo, everyone alive and accounted for?ā€ ā€œYeah, Lacey hurt her ankle.ā€ Mikey yelled back. As he approached he looked concerned. ā€œCan you walk on it?ā€ He asked her. ā€œNo.ā€ Without hesitation he replied, ā€œWell alright then, looks like youā€™re gonna have to piggyback it all the way back home.ā€ He lowered himself enough to where she could hop up onto his back, and we headed back toward the trail. Even though my nerves had begun to settle a bit, I knew we were still far from being out of the woods, in more ways than one.

2024.05.21 17:05 bebechase Letā€™s get nutty and probably bite off way more than I can chew!

So, as of right now my group is about 3-4 sessions in but hasnā€™t technically started the campaign (had to wait to officially start because of some scheduling, so I made what I thought was a quick ā€œhow you all metā€ mission which has lasted much longer than expected). But to get me in a pumped headspace I have been watching the Stream of Many Eyes to get some inspiration for the upcoming campaign. During one of the round tables Chris Perkins made a comment that I thought was interesting. That WDHā€™s downtime is setup in a way where you could run another module right in the middle of it. That got me thinking, that could be very interesting depending on what other campaign you chose. So I started thinking and had the ā€œbrilliantā€ idea that I could work in Tyranny of Dragons into this and have a urban heist romp that bleeds into this sprawling epic with dragons. I think for my table especially theyā€™ll enjoy this and have the best of both worlds.
So here are the changes that I am planning on making in both modules to make them mesh and jive.
  1. I am running the Alexandrian Remix first off to add depth to the city and give my party a reason to want to resolve things in the city and not just run off looking for dragons.
  2. I will be replacing the Grulhunds with a sect of cultists and a Purple Robe. There will be a few correspondents in the villa vaguely describing some of the goings on of the cult in other regions. This will also be taking the place of the Grulhunds in the Grand Game and they are currently track the Stone of G. With the ultimate goal of acquiring the cache of dragons to offer to Tiamat. (The goal here is to shroud these cultists in mystery and not directly tie them to the Cult of the Dragon. Just like WDH we want the PCs to be unsure of the intentions and not give too much away.)
  3. This Purple Robe will be responsible for the fireball at the start of chapter 3, and will have a Nblewright with a necklace of fireballs that steals the Stone of G. The encounter at Grulhund villa with commence in a very similar fashion to what is laid out in the Alexandrian and depending on who the PCs talked to will determine who is there.
  4. Once the PCs have the Stone, or at least have an idea where it is the progression will resemble the Alexandrian. The difference being the Cassalanterns involvement and the faction missions. Most of these missions will be geared toward odd cult like activity in the city and surrounding areas. All of these will culminate at the Asmodean shrine as added by the Alexandrian.
  5. The Cassalanters will be worshipers of Tiamat and will be trying to recruit the PCs to get them the 500k dragons for the offering to Tiamat under the same ploy that their children were cursed at birth etc. They know of the other cultists taking the place of the Grulhunds, but the others donā€™t know about them.
  6. Per the Alexandrian the inserted shrine to Asmodeus will be the Dragon Egg hatchery from chapter 3 of HotDQ. Here we will basically have the same encounter as the original chapter. There will be vague correspondence letter between Mondath and Victoro and with high enough rolls the PCs could potentially find the connection. Also held captive here will be Leosin Erlanthar from HotDQ and this will be where the PCs get filled in on much of the info regarding the Cult of the Dragon (as provided in the first 2 chapters of HotDQ) and presumably what their intentions with Neverembers embezzled gold. After his rescue Leosin says he must go meet Ontharr Frume to gather more intel but he will rendezvous with them back in the city. This will give the players a pause enough from HotDQ storyline to focus on the cache of dragons.
  7. The rest of WDH should play out as normal, with a few smatterings of cultist announcements from town cryers as the PCs walk in the streets.
  8. Other mechanic changes is Aurinax does not have the dragonstaff. What wards off all potential dragon attacks on the city is the black staff and the Walking statues of Waterdeep who are the sentries of the city.
  9. The ultimate goal is the PCs give over the gold to the Cassalanterns, in the process of the game to potentially sow distrust towards Vasraj via the Cassalanterns and make the PCs turn on her or if that is unlikely to happen have her assassinated and the black staff destroyed. With the statues rendered useless Victoro initiated an adult from a chromatic dragon and cultists on the city. The gold is taken away and then the proceedings of Tyranny of Dragons can proceed.
Clearly this is still in the early stages of being worked out and there will definitely be some balancing that needs to take place along with working in some more of the early chapters of HotDQ along side the storyline of WDH (maybe as faction missions?). and you can probably tell that we remove the first couple of chapters of Hoard to interstate the story into our Waterdeep session.
I know this is wild, and will probably bite me in the butt, but I think this might have potential to be something real fun, and keep Waterdeep at the heart of the story.
Let me know what you think, if you have any suggestions that could potentially help with laying the foundation and making everything cohesive. And I will try to update this as the game progresses!
Happy rolling guys!

2024.05.21 16:56 CDown01 Eagles Peak pt.8

Previous Part
By the time Iā€™d woke up bright and early at 4 A.M., Rocco had amassed an impressive pile of pilfered food in the corner of the tepee. He was just dragging in a turkey leg when I saw him, mustā€™ve been at it all night form the looks of it.
ā€œRocco, what the hell!ā€
I shouted, waving my hands at the pile of food heā€™d brought in.
ā€œI told you to stay out of trouble, lay low. This isā€¦ not that!ā€
I complained, trying to think of how Iā€™d talk my way out of this if anyone asked about the missing food. Rocco simply responded by shrugging, turning around, and diving face first into the mountain of food. I was annoyed at the moment but then I got to thinking. If Rocco stole all that and no one saw him what else could he do without being noticed?
ā€œHeyā€¦ hey Rocco no-one saw you stealing all this right?ā€
I asked, grabbing his tail and dragging him out of the food mountain.
ā€œWHATS DA BIG IDEA!ā€
He protested, flailing around as I held him in the air by his tail before regaining his composure and adding.
ā€œIā€™m a profesional, of course I didnā€™t get seen. Why?! Did someone say something!?
Rocco shot his head from side to side, like he would find someone listening or critiquing his heist. All the movement causing him to spin slowly, still dangling from his tail.
ā€œNo, I was just thinking, as long as your out here I could have a job for you.ā€
I said, setting him down as he answered,
ā€œWhadā€™ya mean? Spit it out!ā€
with his classic charm.
ā€œI mean, I want you to sneak into that blonde guyā€™s tepee. The one with the shitty attitude, Brooke I think his name was. Just see if you can find anything in there.ā€
I could see Roccoā€™s interest was peaked but he still had one last all to predictable question.
ā€œWhatā€™s in it for me?ā€
ā€œYou keep whatever you find in there no questions asked.ā€
Before the words even left fully my lips Rocco cried, ā€œDEALā€ and sprinted out of the tepee on all fours, leaving me alone.
I wasnā€™t really sure what the process was now, was Shaoni going to come get us or did she expect us to meet her in the coliseum? Iā€™d never been part of anything like this before, I had no idea what the attendance policy was like. So, lacking anything better to do, I walked down into the mines and waited in the coliseum. It was obvious they wereā€™t really ready for us yet. A few of Shaoniā€™s people were down there placing cactus looking things into five carved wooden bowls on the floor. Five bowls, five people in these trials so those had to have something to do with us. I looked around the room, trying to find Shaoni. She wasnā€™t up on her perch like yesterday and she certainly wasnā€™t part of the small group setting up those bowls. I felt a little different about her now that weā€™d had a chance to talk. Before Iā€™d been afraid of her, and for good reason, but she seemed to want the opposite of that. Maybe not from me specifically but in general. Although, how could you not be scared of someone who could turn into a giant bird and seemed to consistently be the cause of freak storms. There was a lot of power to her but she didnā€™t want people to be afraid of it, she wanted respect. Iā€™m sure there was more to her that I hadnā€™t heard but I certainly was going to hear anything new here.
Seeing as I was still apparently early, I decided not to wear out my welcome in the coliseum. I made my way back out of the mines and settled down back at that canvas tent with the huge table. It was again filled with food that had come from nowhere in particular, probably set up by more of Shaoniā€™s people. As if to confirm my suspicion, the bandaged man Bianca had stabbed earlier emerged from the camp, walking towards me with a platter of bacon. He starred daggers at me as he placed the platter at the table but didnā€™t say anything. I was almost tempted to apologize on Biancaā€™s behalf but I got the sense that wouldnā€™t be a great idea. Not long after I saw two of the others approaching.
ā€œā€¦ Sure, but for some glorified tent itā€™s still pretty comfortable.ā€
Brooke said to Katrina who looked thoroughly uninterested in what he had to say.
Brooke wore aā€¦ purple suit that made him look like some stereotypical version of a pimp. I couldnā€™t think of any reason heā€™d wear that out here, at least no-one would mistake him from anyone else, that ā€™s for sure. Katrina wore an equally confusing getup, a blue tank top and jeans that made her look kinda like the girl from those tomb raider games. It was about 50 degrees out and probably wasnā€™t going to get much warmer. If she wanted to freeze, so be it. I gave a slight nod to them as they sat down across from me. Katrina still eyeing Brooke with an expression that begged for him not to open his mouth again.
I couldnā€™t stop staring at her, no not like that, I was staring at her belt where a holster sat,
ā€œYou like it?ā€
She asked, noticing the staring that I shouldā€™ve been trying harder to hide, drawing the handgun from the holster on her hip.
ā€œBeretta M9 semi-automatic pistol, my fatherā€™s service pistol actually. Always served me well, so I always keep it on me, well almost always.ā€
She said with a wink, checking the gun and pulling back its slide. I wasnā€™t all that familiar with guns but I distinctly saw her flip the safety off. Which had a profound effect on my nerves considering I was staring down its barrel.
ā€œThey let you keep that around here? I wouldā€™ve thought they take that from you.ā€
I asked incredulously, still eyeing the gun she had pointed at me.
ā€œI hid it on me yesterday, if they have an issue with it they can try and take it from me. Iā€™m not doing anything like this without some kind of insurance. They get me and Luke or nothing at all.ā€
She retorted, spinning the gun back into her holster and turning the safety back on with a practiced hand. ā€œOh thatā€™s cute, she named itā€ I thought sarcastically as my nerves settled, a loaded gun no longer pointed directly at my face.
ā€œIā€™m not sure Shaoni would let you leave, even if you wanted to.ā€
ā€œOh please! She wouldnā€™t dare lay a finger on me or sheā€™d have bigger problems coming her way.ā€
Katrina laughed, throwing her hand back in seemingly genuine amusement. She really didnā€™t have a care about the Thunderbird? I found that hard to believe.
ā€œSo what do you do anyways then? If youā€™re so sure she wouldnā€™t touch you.ā€
I asked incredulously. This seemed to grab her attention as she immediately snapped her head down, locking eyes with me and barking,
ā€œThatā€™s a need to know thing and you donā€™t.ā€
Before returning her attention to the food on the table and ignoring me. She was military, that was probably a safe assumption.
Brooke had been listening in to our conversation as he ate. After Katrina snapped at me he finally spoke up.
ā€œSo hang on, you came all the way out here with no insurance, no protection? Does anyone even know youā€™re out here?ā€
I briefly thought about Rocco, he wasnā€™t great insurance but he sure came cheap. I hadnā€™t stopped to think about preparing anything to bring out here with me. I just stupidly assumed everyone was on the same page as me, an unprepared fish out of water.
ā€œNo, I guess not.ā€
I responded, a little shaken at the realization that everyone here was probably more prepared than me.
ā€œYou must be stupid or have balls of steel to do something like that.ā€
Brooke told me, reaching over the table to clap me on the shoulder. I didnā€™t know if this really was the Brooke Bianca told me about or not but I really did not like this guy. We ate the rest of our breakfast in silence. John and Robert never showed up but I guessed they were down in the mines helping set everything up. I guess being a participate in the trials didnā€™t exempt Shaoni's followers from having to help get ready for them.
Apparently my guess was right because Robert and John were both already in the coliseum when the three of us arrived. Shaoni was once again up on the balcony and all of the people that had been there earlier were gone. I could clearly see what was in the five bowls now. It was some kind of small cactus thing with a white-pink flower at the top. Iā€™d never seen anything like it before but it did seem a little out of place.
ā€œThis is your first trial, the trial of morals. This trial is meant to show us where your morals lie through visions of the past and beyond. Sometimes the plant has a mind of its own though so I donā€™t expect anyone will have the same experience. Some may not even serve the purpose of the trial but the vision is more important than anything I hoped to learn.ā€
Shaoni spoke like an announcer from above us.
ā€œThere is a plant there for each of you, peyote plants that I had grow for just this occasion. Each of you will eat one of the plants and they will give you visions. You will walk among the spirits and they will show you what you need to see.ā€
Shaoni finished, like she hadnā€™t just asked us to take hallucinogenics in an unfamiliar environment surrounded by people we didnā€™t really trust. I wasnā€™t a huge fan of being here when I was in control of my faculties but while experiencing a vision, oh no, fat chance. Then again it wasnā€™t like I had all that much of a choice, I realized just before I opened my mouth to protest.
ā€œFine but what does that tell you about us? Sure we can go get high for you here but it doesnā€™t really help anyone.ā€
Brooke spoke up, taking his usual disrespectful tone with Shaoni.
ā€œI have my ways of knowing, but this experiences is for you. It should tell you more about yourself than it will tell me but I assure you, I will learn something.ā€
An annoyed but composed Shaoni responded. With that she turned and left us to our task.
ā€œSo does anyone want to go first?ā€
Katrina asked, putting a finger to her nose, inviting anyone else to go first.
ā€œNot so fast sweetcheeks, I donā€™t trust any of you so how about you take the first crack at it?ā€
Brooke pointedly suggested. I think Katrina wanted to throw a haymaker at his face right then but I stepped in first.
ā€œWhat if we all did it at once? Then no one is waiting around and I highly doubt she would let anyone come down here and do anything to us if these trials are that important to her.ā€
I reasoned, pointing up at the balcony Shaoni had been standing on.
ā€œI still donā€™t like it but I can live with that, I agree everyone at once likeā€¦ whatā€™s your name?ā€
ā€œKeithā€
ā€œEveryone at once like Keith said.ā€
Commanded Katrina, looking everyone in the eye and daring them to challenge her. I didnā€™t know what she did before coming here but whatever it was gave her a glare even Shaoni would be proud of. No-one hesitated to walk up to their respective bowls and take a bite of the strange pinkish flower at the top of the cactus.
The effects werenā€™t immediate, John just ate his flower then knelt by his bowl, eyes closed waiting for the vision to come. Robert leaned against the wall looking at his watch, seemingly judging the time before it took effect.
ā€œItā€™s not my first time with peyote, Iā€™ll probably stay up a little longer than you guys.ā€
Brooke bragged to the room, taking a seat by his bowl as Katrina and I did the same.
Poetically, Brooke was actually the first of us to go down for the count. I had to resit the urge to stand up and kick the crumpled up purple ball that was formerly Brooke. I donā€™t think anyone would have stopped me, heck the way Katrina was glaring at him this morning she mightā€™ve joined in. But given what came next it was probably a good idea I didnā€™t stand. All of a sudden the room began flashing different colors, orange then brown then blue. I felt like I was falling but I hadnā€™t moved. Eventually a sensation came over me, like I had stood up but I was acutely aware of the fact that my body was really lying on the floor of the coliseum. As my vision cleared I started to recognize things, sights and sounds of a hospital room. It would seem my vision had started by bringing me back to my father.
I inched through the hospital room, sure of what Iā€™d see on the other side of the thin curtain. A heart monitor beeped, just the same as the first and last time Iā€™d been in this room. I saw my father, splayed across the bed no different than the only time Iā€™d been in this room. Iā€™ve always maintained that my family life was generally normal, anything that lay outside of that box of normality could be attributed to my father. He was never what Iā€™d call a good person. Sure, he was never aggressive towards me but it didn't really count for anything. You could tell he never really wanted me. What he did to my mother, that was another story. He came home drunk almost every night and she end up with a black eye or worse at least once a week. Unfortunately for us he had a good job, he paid the bills and my mother and I couldnā€™t really support ourselves on our own back then. Worse still my mother always told me she put up with it for my sake when I asked her about it. That meant I always felt partially responsible every time I heard a fist meet skin in the room below mine.
My father had ended up in this bed by way of a drunk driving incident. Funnily enough it wasnā€™t actually his fault. He just so happened to be in the wrong intersection at the wrong time when a box truck plowed right into him. The accident left him with severe brain and spinal damage. It was a sick joke he survived, not a miracle. Heā€™d be on life support from now on. I couldā€™ve made him pay for everything he did with the simple tug of a cable. The only reason I didnā€™t was that the owner of the company that employed the box truck driver offered to pay all his medical bills. He must not have looked to closely because my fathers insurance was covering all of it. But every week a hefty check came in the mail anyways. As long as he was alive and in that hospital bed, me and my mother could live comfortably. It wasnā€™t really the right thing to do but I figured it was what my mother deserved after years of putting up with his abuse.
The heart monitorā€™s shrill beeping focused me back to the situation. I stood over my fatherā€™s body, the old urge to just pull the plug washing over me again.
ā€œIt would be so easy. Momā€™s fine now, youā€™re managing, why do you still need him?ā€
I thought to myself, toying with the idea as another voice spoke in my head, Shaoniā€™s voice.
ā€œHeā€™s earned it, he ruined years of your motherā€™s life, Its only fair he pay a price for what he did.ā€
I looked around for the source of her voice but I saw nothing, maybe I was just hearing things, it was just a vision after all right? I looked down to see I was now on the opposite side of the bed, hand reaching toward the cord that powered the life support. Time seemed to move at a crawl, was this really the best option? He was probably solely responsible for the distance between my mother and I, he beat her so many times. Some of the blame for it even sat on my shouldres, would killing him take that away? Could I live with myself if I did this? Knowing I took the easy way out at his expense. Noā€¦ I couldnā€™t, it would make me just as bad as him. It just wasnā€™t right I shouldnā€™t be the one to decide if he dies. Besides, whatever sliver of sentience remained in him deserved to watch as he shriveled and died in his own way, in some ways that was far worse but he didnā€™t deserve an easy way out either. The room spun as I made my choice and pulled my hand back from the plug. Sending my vision spiraling as my body collapsed to the cold hospital floor. When I finally fought my way through my spinning vision and back to my feet I was somewhere else. I was in Imalone and if I had to guess it was the night I first saw Shaoni.
I was somewhere in the town square where I got chained into the wooden monstrosity the cultists had made. Shaoni was circling in the sky so I guess I was watching this memory from outside of myself. I was made absolutely sure of this when I saw myself being carried out of the old rotting bar. I watched as the situation played out exactly as I remembered it. Right up until Shaoni landed and came to speak with the one masked cultist. What had been gibberish to me before was suddenly crystal clear english.
ā€œWhat IS this! You think this is right!? This is what you think I stand for, human sacrifice?!ā€
Shaoni shouted with such intensity and force I jumped back, looking for a place to take cover.
ā€œBrother Aaron foretold your approach, this outsider wandered in so we thought he would make an excellent gift to you.ā€
The masked cultist answered, missing the point entirely as Shaoniā€™s eyes flashed with fury.
ā€œThere will be a sacrifice alright, a price must be paid for everything youā€™ve done here. You have no understanding of what I stand for, Youā€™ve spit in the face of it in fact and for that, each and every one of you will make a sacrifice. Release that poor boy, NOW!ā€
Shaoni commanded the cultists with a voice so stern I almost ran to try and free the trapped version of myself. None of them budged, they didnā€™t even seem to realize what kind of danger they were in. Shaoni strode past them over to me where she offered me her all to familiar deal. I was stunned, I never stopped to think that she fully intended to let me go either way. Sure, now I knew that these guys werenā€™t her usual followers. I still never thought she came here intending to wipe them out. I didnā€™t really have a chance to dwell on it. Before I knew it Shaoni was transforming again causing a tornado to appear in the middle of town as lightning struck around the area like machine gun fire. As the wall of wind rain and lighting reached me I felt a familiar falling sensation and blacked out again.
When I came to I was back on the cave floor again. I wasnā€™t sure if I was still in a vision until I felt a sharp kick to my side.
ā€œOhā€¦ that feltā€¦ very real. Oh god why?ā€
I groaned as I looked up at the smirking Katrina.
ā€œHeā€™s awake, thatā€™s everyone then.ā€
She called out to the rest of the group who were all standing around me. She and the others walked off in the direction of the exit, leaving me there on the floor. With nothing better to do I followed them out. Outside the full moon had shown itself, bathing the camp in shimmering moonlight. Shaoni walked up to greet all of us whoā€™d just collectively decided to just go outside.
ā€œYouā€™ve all made it through it would seem, I hope your experiences werenā€™t to unpleasant.ā€
Brooke charged straight past her, I could practically see the steam coming out of his ears. Obviously heā€™d seen something he didnā€™t like while he was under the influence of that plant. Katrina seemed completely unaffected, marching by Shaoni filled with the same confidence she had when I first saw her. Robert and John seemed completely unaffected by whatever they had seen but something told me they might be used to it. Me, I wasnā€™t doing so great. I wasnā€™t all that pleased about revisiting my father and all those old memories and whatever that flower was called had really done a number on me. I weakly waved to Shaoni as I walked by, just trying to focus on walking straight. She didnā€™t seem to surprised that none of us wanted to talk to her. She didnā€™t say anything to us as we all quietly sat and ate. I didnā€™t like the silence, it felt like everyone was just waiting for something to happen but no-one had any idea what. So I got up and headed back to my tepee, maybe Rocco had turned something up on Brooke.
Rocco was waiting for me atop his mountain of food when I got back.
ā€œI found somethin yous might be interested inā€
He said triumphantly, waving around a polaroid photo he had clutched in his paw.
ā€œGive that to me!ā€
I snapped, ripping it right out of his paw.
ā€œWell someones in a mood.ā€
ā€œGetting drugged will do that to you.ā€
I snapped as Rocco stared at me, paws on his hips like he was about to give me attitude.
ā€œIā€™m sorry My heads still just spinning fromā€¦ well everything today.ā€
I sighed, holding my head in one hand as I shook it. Apologizing to a raccoon, my life really was something wasnā€™t it? I looked down to the picture enemy hand and immediately ice shot through my veins. It was a picture of Bianca taken not too long ago by the looks of it. She was walking back into her house in the photo and it looked like it was taken from a passing car. The photo itself isnā€™t what really concerned me though, the message written on the back did that. ā€œWhat you seek can be found in the town of Eagles Peakā€, the note read in a singsongy way. Iā€™d never seen Shaoniā€™s handwriting but given the circumstances I was sure thatā€™s what I was looking at.
I looked up at Rocco who looked more serious than Iā€™d ever seen him.
ā€œNow I donā€™t know what happened to that girl but somethinā€™ hurt her before we knew her. If thatā€™s the somethinā€™ that did, and Iā€™m guessinā€™ it is lookinā€™ atchaā€™. I say we should hurt emā€™ back.ā€
Rocco told me with cold steel in his voice. It was weird, hearing him speak without a hint of a joke or over exaggerated movement. We finally found something that the little menace to society could focus on, somethingā€¦ productive.
ā€œMy hands are tied, I donā€™t think anyone here would take kindly to me just attacking someone. Besides, look at him, heā€™s taller and obviously stringer than me. Iā€™m just a scrawny guy whoā€™s way out of his element, I donā€™t want a fight. Justā€¦ keep an eye on him, maybe we can find something to turn the others against him?ā€
It wasnā€™t the answer Rocco was looking for, thatā€™s for sure. He deflated at my words, Iā€™m sure he wanted to go in guns blazing and confront Brooke with what we thought we knew. That wasnā€™t really going to be an option here, even if it was Iā€™d rather not do that.
ā€œOh, one more thing, Donā€™t let Brooke go back into town if he tries to leave, I donā€™t care how you do it just donā€™t let him leave.ā€
I added as an evil grin crossed Roccoā€™s face.
ā€œAyeā€™ ayeā€™ captain!ā€
He cried, raising a paw to his head and saluting me.
Just then I heard someone knocking, no rustling? Screwing around with the front flap to the tepee trying to get my attention. I opened it only to see, ā€œShaoni?ā€
ā€œI wanted to ask about the visions today, Iā€™ve talked to everyone else but I couldnā€™t find you so I guessed youā€™d be atā€¦ is that a raccoon?ā€
Shaoni stopped, seeing Rocco frozen mid step behind me as he tried and failed to run before she saw him. Realizing heā€™d been seen Rocco twirled around and in a way only he could announced,
ā€œWhatchaā€™ think you were looking at Pocahontas?ā€
ā€œOh? It talks as well?ā€
Shaoni said, somewhere between bewildered and bemused as she looked between me and the mouthy Raccoon.
ā€œCourse I talk! I thought you wouldaā€™ seen somethinā€™ like that when you were busy painting with all the colors of the wind!ā€
Rocco yelled back at her. I wasnā€™t sure if he was actually offended by Shaoniā€™s questions, or just deliberately trying to be a nuisance, probably the second thing. I whirled around and glared at Rocco, holding my finger to my mouth in an attempt to shut him up. For once he actually listened.
ā€œIā€¦ sorry about him, heā€™s always like that, part of his charm you know.ā€
I said with a shrug and a nervous chuckle. Shaoni shook her head dismissively and continued.
ā€œDid you see anything in the cave that you wanted to talk about?ā€
She asked me, now sounding a little annoyed. I thought back to my father and that hospital room, I wasnā€™t really ready to talk about that with anyone just yet. But I did have some new questions about how I got into this whole mess in the first place.
ā€œYou said back in Imalone you saved me because I realized there was a price for being saved. That wasnā€™t really it though was it? I saw it again, I could understand you this time. You were going to save me regardless. So why mark me Shaoni? Why did you really bring me here?!ā€
I said, my voice raising outside of my control as I spoke. I had to finally admit to myself that I was sick and tired of being dragged around in the dark. I was suddenly furious and I didnā€™t care who it was standing in front of me, I wanted an answer.
ā€œThose men were ruining my name, they thought they were following the Thunderbird but it was just some idea of me they had come up with. They used me to justify their horrid actions and I came to put a stop to it. You were there and when I offered you a deal you didnā€™t fight it. Thatā€™s why I marked you.ā€
Shaoni spoke quickly, like she wanted to avoid the subject, all but turning around and leaving right then.
ā€œBullshit! I want an answer Shaoni, a real answer!ā€
I yelled at her, my fury taking full control of me. Shaoni was silent for a minute, when she finally spoke she looked down, never meeting my eyes as she softly said.
ā€œYou remind me of someone from a long time ago. They were blind to the way of things at first, an outsider even. In time though, he became what bound our people together as one family. I donā€™t have a better answer for you than that. I wasnā€™t sure I shouldā€™ve chosen you at first, I had a feeling that day and I followed it. What youā€™ve done since youā€™ve got here, how youā€™ve handled learning what little you know about the world of the supernatural. Those things are what tell me I made the right choice.ā€
As she walked away I thought I saw tears reflecting in the moonlight shown on her face. As I settled down I swore I heard soft sobs, echoing across the camp long into the night.

2024.05.21 16:12 Legitimate-Impact688 House Decor

Hey yall!
In the last two years, my chapter & alum have raised close to 40k for renovations for our house (small chapter and small house). Our school is being a pain in helping us get renovations actually organized, so we are hoping to spruce up the house before fall semester.
Things to note: We live in a 16-room house. There are four rooms each in what we call a cube, and there are 2 cubes per level. So 8 on the top, 8 on the bottom. They are equal shapes and the cubes are pretty much set up identical. The cubes are painted different colors, such as teal, yellow, pink/purple, and light blue.
If we cannot get our big reno done, I was hoping to be able to put up some nice new decor in each of the cubes, like maybe a LED sign and wall prints and new throw pillows for the loveseats. Does anyone else have recommendations? I am having trouble thinking of stuff that will coordinate but not make the rooms totally identical but make them look nice still for recruitment when we have PNMs in our house.
Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks in advance yall.
Edit: I think it is also important to note we can only make changes to our cube areas. We have two large common areas but the decopaint there is determined by our Nationals and we recieve new based on a rotation. Really hoping we will be able to get stuff painted this summer!

2024.05.21 15:21 unavngiven My mom died... [Very long post]

This is my first reddit post, although I have been a long time lurker of many subreddits. I am 23 years old and an only child. I am not a native english speaker, so please forgive any weird formatting or any spelling/grammar mistakes.
As the title states, my mom died ... and I am currently writing this to try and process this whole situation. I've tried to section all the paragraphs in chronological order, to make reading easier. Sorry for the extremely long post - I just needed to get it all out.
We only just celebrated her 60th birthday back in february. She did all the cooking, cleaning and planning without any trouble - even down to picking out the perfect napkins and flowers for her white and gold theme.
My mother was without a job. She had been jobless for almost 2 years now, after she was fired from her old cleaning job due to frequent sick days because of stomach cramps and pain. She was seen by a doctor back in 2022 for her stomach aches, and they found no physical cause - hence why we concluded it must've been due to stress. The stress and stomach pains subsided after she'd been fired. So we thought no more of it.
In march she was doing a 4-week internship in a local supermarket to see if she might've been a good fit for a permanent paid position. This is common practice for unemployeed people here in Denmark.
My mother started having stomach pains again during this internship, soon followed by back pains as well. She figured this was due to her spending most of the day sitting as a cashier in an uncomfortable position. My mother wasn't very tall, so she had trouble reaching the floor pedals that control the cashier conveyer belt.
In the beginning of april, she went to the doctor. Her stomach and back pains hadn't gone away although the internship was over. Her doctor also concluded it was most likely due to her uncomfortable working position, and that it would pass in a few weeks time. The doctor did some bloodwork, and found that she was severely lacking vitamin D, but nothing else seemed concerning at the time.
In the middle of april, her pains had only gotten worse, and she went to the doctor again. Her doctor did more bloodwork, and did a phisycal exam of my mothers stomach. Her doctor ordered a CT scan to check for anything serious.
19th of april. I accompany my mother to the hospital for her CT scan. We get told that we'll have the results in a week or so. My mother is not looking good when I pick her up at the bus station. She is more pale than usual, and has trouble walking at her usual pace.
23th of april. My mother received a referral to a meeting at the hospital with a doctor and nurse, to discuss the results of the CT scan. This referral is sent from the hospitals cancer department. My mother and I speak on the phone, she is concerned, but I tell her that this type of referral must just be standard pratice, and that she shouldn't worry untill we have spoken with the doctor. I cried that night.
25th of april. The day before her meeting with the doctor, I received a phone call from my mother. She tells me that she had fallen while at home, but that I shouldn't worry. I, of course, worry.
I pack my things and leave for my mothers house, I live an hour away by bus. When I finally arrive my mother seems okay-ish, but the house is another story. My mother is normally known for being a clean freak, and her house has always been clean and organized, But it wasn't anymore.
Her kitchen was a mess, and the dishwasher hadn't been empited or loaded for at least two weeks. Her bathroom is even worse, and I won't even begin to describe the state of the toilet it self. It is a sight that will horrify me for the rest of my life. I cleaned everything, while my mother rested.
My mother had also started sleeping on the guest bed, saying her own was too uncomfortable for her.
While cleaning the bathroom, my mother wakes up. Despite her state, she says she wants to help. But before I can even tell her no, my mother has another fall. Her legs essentially just crumble beneath her, and she falls backwards and lands head first on the floor. We argue back and forth about calling an ambulance, but she refuses to let me - so I don't, even though I should have. I guess I still respected my moms authority too much.
My mother lives alone, as my parents are divorced (they are very good friends though). My mother refuses to let me call my dad and tell him about this whole situation. She is stubborn and too proud to admit defeat.
26th of april. We take a taxi to the hospital. The taxi driver has a help my mother into the car. During the carride my mother says very little, but seems slightly delirious and very tired. When we arrive at the hospital, I quickly borrow a hospital wheelchair for my mother. She is almost unable to walk unassisted at this point.
After waiting for a while in the waiting area, a nurse comes and guides us to a meeting room. My mother is very tired at this point, and still delirious, and I have to handle most of the conversation with the doctor.
The CT scan results showed Pancreatic cancer. The cancer had already spread to her liver and abdomial cavity.
I had read about this cancer a few days prior, trying to figure out what was wrong with my mother. I knew what this meant, and I knew that it was effectively a death sentence. The doctor told us that an operation was out of the question, since the cancer had already spread. And due to the clearly weak state of my mothers health, chemo would also not be offered, as it would finish her.
I told the doctor of her two falls and the state of her home, and that she would not be safe on her own. The doctor had her admitted to a nearby bed department for stomach- and gastrointestinal surgery patients.
The hospital did a ton of bloodwork on my mother when she got admitted, and everything was off. All numbers were either too high or dangerously low. My mothers health was in fact so bad, that I was told she was a heart attack risk. I was also told that if a heart attack happened, she would not be brought back - as it would only prolong a very short and painful life.
I called my dad.
27th of april. My mother slept most of the day.
28th of april. My mother had another fall during the night, trying to get to the bathroom.
29th of april. My dad shows up to the hospital. He wasn't able to get off work until now, as he works in the other end of the country. He is shocked to see my mother in this state. We are told once again by a different doctor that nothing can be done. They are looking into getting her a spot at a nearby hospice.
The rest of the remaining week is spent in hospital. My dad and I are by my mothers side every day. She doesn't leave her hospital room, apart from a few times a day for a smoke break outside. My dad and I take her outside in a wheelchair, which she needs help to get in and out of.
Her bloodwork is showing some slight improvements, but she is still having trouble with infections and receives a lot of antibiotics. She eats like a mouse, but drinks a lot of fluids.
My mother is often very confused or tired most days. She gets referred for an MR scan, to see if the cancer has spread to her brain, or if one of her falls has caused permanent damage. Lucikly the MR scan shows that nothing is wrong with her brain.
She gets confused about her diagnosis a few times, thinking that she had brain cancer instead due to the MR scan. I have to remind her a couple times about what the doctor actually said.
6th of may. My mother seems to have stabilized somewhat so my dad has gone back to work.
7th of may. I get told by the hospital staff that my mother is to be transferred to a different hospital, which is one hour away. I become very upset by this news, and unfortunately yell at one of my mothers nurses in frustration. I yell at her that It'll be harder for me to get to my mother in time if something were to happen. I am ashamed of this childish behavior, as the transfer was the best desicion for my mother in hindsight.
I leave with my mother as we get transferred to the new hospital and their department of palliative care.
I am very ashamed by my behavior to my mothers old nurse, as this department for palliative care was truly the best place for my mother. She seemed very satisfied and happy to have been transferred. They have a large garden with wild flowers, and lovely staff. And my mother got a much bigger room all to herself. She also meets with their physical therapist, who helps my mother relieve some of her pain.
My mother and I have dinner together in the evening in her hospital room. My mom is her old self, although with some delayed speaking. I unfortunately have to rush a bit when leaving, as to not miss my bus home, so I quickly say goodbye to her and leave.
8th of may. In the morning on my way to the new hospital, I received a phone call from her new doctor. My mothers liver has suddenly started to fail due to the cancer. When I arrive, she is asleep. I am told she wont wake up again.
I called my dad, but he wont arrive until the evening, due to the distance from his workplace.
I spend most of the day in my mothers hospital room, listening to her sleep. She occasionally attempts to cough in her sleep, but it mainly just sounds like yells. It is terrifying. The nurses give her pain medication and some sleep medication to help her body relax.
My dad arrives in the late evening. We drive to my mothers house and stay the night there. We spend most of the late evening looking at pictures and scrapbooks of my mother, and packing a bag with clothes for her, for when she passes.
When prepareing the guest bed for my dad, we find a blanket that my mother slept on. It is stained, matching the previous state of the bathroom. We throw the blanket out.
9th of may. Mom is sleeping. Dad and I spend the day at the hospital, but we don't sit in her hospital room. It is too eerie and uncomfortable. We check on her occassionally. Towards the evening, her breathing becomes slightly more rapid and quick. But the nurses tell us to go home. There is no reason for us to sit by her side during the night - as it'll only make it worse for us.
10th of may. I wake at 6.12 am to my phone ringing. It is a nurse. My mother has passed away in her sleep at 6.05 that morning due to liver failure. My dad and I drive to the hospital. I am the first to see her body after the nurses prepared and dressed it in the clothing we picked.
(warning: the following paragraph may be slightly upsetting to some readers)
It it eerie and uncomfortable to see my mother like this. A symptom of pancreatic and liver cancers is that your skin will yellow. Something that I hadn't noticed in my mother till now. I cant help but think that she looks like a wax doll, although I feel horrible for thinking it. I finally touch her hand, after gathering the courage to, almost like I am afraid to distrub her. Her hands are cold, and only get colder as I sit by her side. I am supposed to say my goodbyes to her, and tell her how much she means to me, but in this moment I am speechless. I can't say anything, even on my mothers deathbed. I feels wrong to speak to a corpse. I should've said those things while she could hear them instead. I kiss her forehead before I leave the room.
17th of may. Funeral. The church and casket was beautifully decorated with colorful flowers, like my mother had requested. She didn't want anything white or depressing. I cried all the way through the funeral service, stopping only when it was time to carry the casket out. My dad on the left side, and me on the right, and some other family members behind us. Purple rain by Prince was played on the church piano as we carried the casket. I knew the casket would be heavy, but nothing prepared me for the sheer weight of that thing.
21th of may. Today. I don't really know what to think of my mothers death. Some days I almost forget that shes gone or that all this has been happening, until something reminds me of it.
In a way, I am thankful. Of course I didn't want my mother to die, but I'm glad that her suffering wasn't prolonged for months while she slowly withered away to cancer. And I'm thankful that my mother didn't live to suffer from alzheimers, like her own mother. And I am glad that if anything, my mothers death has brought my dad and I closer.
But at the same time, I am angry that she didn't get to live more of her life. She was only 60 years old, and should have had 20 more years at least. If she at least was 70, it might've been easier to lose her but I doubt it.
I think mostly of all the things she will miss out on, which saddens me the most. I am 23 and my mother wont get to see most of my life or my achivements. If I have kids, she'll never meet them, and she I get married, she'll never see it. My 24th birthday is coming up soon, and I don't know how I'll handle that day without my mother for the first time - or christmas for that matter.
I want my mom.

2024.05.21 15:20 Wubs4Scrubs Suggestion - A Point System for Builds

After playing and watching Dead by Daylight for many hours and seeing a variety of metas come and go, I got to thinking what I would do if put in the balance team's shoes. Below is a writeup on one possible way to rework the build system for the game to promote usage of more perks, more Killers, lower the quantity of problematic builds, and hopefully keep the game fun for all players.

Problems to Solve

Proposed Solution

A point-based loadout system for Dead by Daylight where Survivors and Killers have 16 points with which to make their build for a match. Killer choice, perk choice, add-ons and items would all be worth a set number of points as determined by the balance team. This solution accounts for the fact that not all perks or Killers will ever be on a level playing field as it is impossible to achieve perfect balance in that way. Rather, this system aims to achieve balance by allowing weaker Killers to run stronger perks, or Survivors to run stronger items at the cost of having weaker perks. In essence, this system balances by accounting for imbalance.
Points Perks Items Add-ons Killers
5 Very Strong N/A Iri Very Strong
4 Strong Purple Purple Strong
3 Solid Green Green Solid
2 Weak Yellow Yellow Weak
1 Bad Brown Yellow Bad

Example Survivor Build

Total Points = 16

Example Killer Build

Total Points = 16

How does this help?

The above example builds illustrate the decisions you have to make when putting together a build with this system. You can no longer just slot in 4 of whatever the strongest "meta" perks are at the time. Rather, you can choose to run one really strong perk, and make sacrifices elsewhere, either by not bringing other strong add-ons or perhaps forgoing some perk slots entirely.
The example Survivor build also goes to show a couple of other benefits of this system, being that fun is (hopefully) preserved and some off-meta perks have been chosen. If you only have 12 points worth of loadout options to use, you will inevitably be left with leftover points in your build that you can use to slot in perks you wouldn't otherwise, such as Diversion or Lightweight. I also like how this solution avoids removing any of the fun of a strong perk, as Adrenaline in this scenario would still function the same as it does now. It simply associates a cost with running something that is strong, and avoids the problem of gutting perks by removing all of their function.

Weaknesses

This system is not perfect, as in its current state it does not reflect the fact that not all add-on strength correlates with its rarity. Some Iri add-ons are trash, and this system would actively punish you for running them. This issue could be solved by either reworking add-on strength to be more in line with their rarity ratings, or by doing something I will suggest in the next section.
This system also could limit the number of fun combinations that are available in the game. For example, if you wanted to run combo with two 4-point perks, it would take up most of your available points for the loadout.

Improvements

One way this system could be improved further is by reworking some perks or add-ons to be worth negative points in the loadout system. For example, some add-ons give you increased bloodpoints for the cost of some detrimental effect, such as the Wraith's which makes your terror radius not go away when cloaking. By adding negative values to certain add-ons, you could add another layer onto build complexity where you purposely make yourself weaker in some way and in exchange you are able to run something stronger somewhere else in your build.
The 16 point limit I chose wasn't totally arbitrary, as I wanted to find a good balance between having enough room to run four good perks if you forgo items or add-ons, while also making it a very consequential decision if you choose to run a perk or add-on that costs 5 points. If desired, the limit could be reduced or increased.

Discussion

Do you think this system would improve the game? If not, why and if so, would you change anything?

2024.05.21 15:16 Cute-Solid-5636 You're probably wrong about crop rotation harvest

So the popular notion is that it's best to reduce yellow crops as much as possible, so that there is 1 huge crop, well, here I am to challenge that view, hear me out.
Obviously I'm not going to argue that having as much yellow as possible is the way, instead, we want perfect balance, from what I've observed, the best thing to happen is to have around 3-4 yellow crops, and the rest of different colours, now I loosely observed, that boosting a single crop of colour works rather underwhelmingly, it seems that the more you upgrade it the less later upgrades impact the overall outcome (as I've said it's a loose observation, don't have any concrete data to back that up). Furthermore, if you happen to stumble across any video of like 20/30k+ juice harvest, it's bound to have more than 1 yellow crop (since the most you can get on a single crop is probably around 20 tier 3s and 5 tier 4s*, which in itself with 200%+ quant would be around 15k juice).
*that still requires a lot of luck not only with the crops not wilting but with the upgrades themselves
So I firmly believe that every upgrade of 1 colour is best utilised by multiple crops of said colour (probably 3-4 for the most efficient combo) since the upgrading potential of multiple crops is superior to single crop (due to aforementioned reverse snowball effect ((although not entirely confirmed))) even if it means less upgrades overall.
So I don't have any specific data in which I could isolate the factors and confirm that more yellow crops = better, since it's still heavily rng based, but from what I've run the best combination on atlas tree seems to be 3x purple reduced (reducing purple cause it's cheaper than blue) and 1x reduced yellow - I averaged 6,6k yellow juice in 100 maps, whereas with 3x reduced yellow I averaged 6,1k (it really could be due to pure rng, but I believe sample size of 100 maps should be enough)
So let me know what do you think about it, maybe someone did some more rigorous testing and observations.

2024.05.21 13:43 Zac-Salazar My first post

Greetings, people of Reddit, this is my first post in this community and on Reddit as a whole. I would like you to read about my original sentai
Yojutsu Sentai Obakeranger (Yokai arts squad ghost Rangers) Motif: Yokais, Sorcereexorcists, magic It is inspired by animes such as Shaman king Yokai Watch Jujutsu Kaisen and the concept of Onmyodo (Japanese escoteric magic), among other things.
The story revolves around a young man who, upon arriving in a new city, discovers that it is haunted by terrible spirits known as Onryo but the city is defended by yojutsu shamans. Soon after saving the life of a Nekomata (cat yokai) he awakens his yokai power and becomes Obake Red, joining the team and beginning his journey to become a shaman.
The rangers are:
Obake Red: a young man obsessed with the supernatural and the occult and even though he doesn't have shaman blood he can use yojutsu techniques, this is one of the mysteries of the series His element is fire and his yokai partner is a Nekomata (Two-Tailed Cat)
Obake blue: A serious young man and strategist and was the former leader before Red's arrival and because of this, a rivalry ends up being created between the two, he wants to honor his clan of shamans at all costs. His element is wood and his yokai partner is a tengu (raven man)
Obake yellow: The youngest on the team. Imperative and playful but he hates when people treats him like a child, his element is earth and his yokai partner is a Tsuchinoko (snake yokai)
Obake Black: Before being called by her family to be a shaman she was a sukeban (juvenile delinquent) gang leader she is the typical tomboy and doesn't like too much feminine things she is tough but deep down she has a soft heart Her element is water and her yokai partner is a kappa
Obake White: She didn't really want to be a shaman, she actually wanted to follow her dream of being a "cosplayer idol" but her family repressed her, but among her teammates she can be herself and that's why she appears almost always with a new cosplay when he arrives on the scene. Sweet and cheerful, she is the heart of the team Her element is metal and her yokai partner is a jorogumo (spider woman yokai)
OniSlayer: a man who renounced his shaman side and made a pact with an oni in order to take revenge he does not use spells but rather martial arts withv oni energy His color is purple, his element is darkness and his yokai partner is Shuten Douji (I imagine his ranger suit design to be very inspired by Gostei Knight, Gaisoulg and Rio from Gekiranger)
The collectibles are Yo-Fudas, cards inspired by Ofuda talismans that are responsible for the team's spells, weapons and zords Each ranger has their own deck of Yo-Fudas based on different yokais of their respective elements
About the mechas, I think of something a bit similar Go-Onger, Go-Buster and Goseiger, zords that are half yokai and half vehicle Red: Nekomata/ racing car Blue: Tengu/ helicopter Yellow: Tsuchinoko/ Shovel Black: Kappa/ submarine White: Jorogumo/ Armored car OniSlayer: Oni/Dekotora The main five Rangers have a shared mecha (gashadokuro/ tank) that serves as the mecha main body (similar to the Korean toku Legend Hero) and can make multiple combinations
The villains are the Onryo, vengeful spirits whose mission is to resurrect their leader (Tatarigami) so they can create "hell on Earth" and take revenge on the living. Its method of creating monsters is very similar to miraculous Ladybug
They choose a human with bad feelings such as grudge and malice and incorporate an evil spirit into their body that ends up creating a monster linked to something (an object in most cases) while the monster causes chaos the possessed victim begins to perform the ritual to send his soul to Tatarigami so that he can be reborn (the ritual ends with the victim killing themselves)so the Rangers have to defeat the monster through exorcism (the monster also attacks people with the aim of accumulating people's negative energies to help with the ritual)
So that's it, that's my idea. Again, anyone who wants to give ideas on how to improve this story (specially about the villains) it would be greatly appreciated.

2024.05.21 11:32 ApoKun Want to sell Redmi note 12, any rec on what to get?

Currently have a Redmi note 12. Previously had a pixel 4xl that I loved but it had some issues which consisted of the lock screen and face unlock freezing and the drawer not opening. Besides this the only issue I had was battery life and heating up. The space while low (6/64) didn't bother me too much.
I had to sell that and get this but I'm not happy with it. The specs are too low. I don't care about camera or social media stuff, the only thing I use my phone for is Whatsapp, Manga, YT, Songs or games which I can not do cause my specs are shit.
I was thinking of either getting a cheaper phone with better specs (I doubt I'll find one cheaper than this for better specs) or getting a PTA patched Pixel 4xl again which I think will be cheaper than this. I could probably sell my Redmi for 40K or above since it's in perfect condition, has around 4-6 months of warranty left and has the box and all it's contents (the transparent case the phone came with is yellowed though)
I saw listings for pixel 4xl for anywhere from 32K-38K on Facebook market (never used it)
I was also thinking of getting a non PTA phone which would be considerably cheaper but the hassle of carrying a second phone would be annoying.
Also, could someone tell me what the difference is between PTA patched and Patched approved or are they the same thing. Some people also have their pixels listed as PTA approved and still selling it for under 40K

2024.05.21 11:18 Standard-Panic-5460 Something I noticed in the latest newsletter.

A lot of animations in the newsletter depict Papyrus tending to the flowers seen in Asgore's shop. We know that they're the flowers Asgore gave to Toriel on their wedding day thanks to a photo in Deltarune Chapter 1, and this could mean chapter 4 is in a Flower King dark world. Back to the newsletter, Papyrus is only watering four of the seven flowers Asgore has: Teal, Orange, Blue and Purple, with the fifth being Flowey. Green and Yellow are absent. The yellow soul mode was used in the Spamton NEO boss. And with seven chapters and seven souls, it's possible that each secret boss uses a different soul mode. So, to conclude my theory, I believe the Green Soul mode will be seen in chapter 3. Why 3 and not 4? Well if we look at Undertale's Photoshop Flowey's boss fight, the order which the souls appear are Teal, Orange, Blue, Purple, Green and finally Yellow. My guess is the soul modes in secret bosses will appear in a reverse order, with a new mechanic each time simillar to the "Big shot" in the yellow soul mode.
What does Deltarune think?

The Metallica Conspiracy: The reason Metallica hasn't made a good album since The Black Album (1991) is because they were all replaced sometime in the early to mid 90's.
INTRODUCTION:
While listening to the radio the other day, I had a thought. What if the reason Metallica has sucked since 1996 is because they aren't actually Metallica, but an entirely different band? To me this logically is the only explanation for how Metallica's music changed so drastically and permanently between the release of their self titled album "Metallica" (The Black Album) on August 12, 1991, and their next album "Load" which released June 4, 1996. All of a sudden they changed from being a thrash metal band at their peak to being a mediocre grunge rock Bush wannabe band who cut off their long hair and started wearing eye shadow and earrings.
THE BLACK ALBUM:
https://preview.redd.it/sjhfpgrnlq1d1.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a11df9d81fab0b2c071112c843752d33e87206ee
The whole theme of Metallica's self titled album (generally referred to as "The Black Album") appears to be "Don't Tread On Me". This is confirmed by the cover image of the album itself. On the bottom right corner is the "Don't Tread On Me" snake from the Gadsden Flag which is a rebel flag first created in 1789. The history of the rattlesnake representing American rebelliousness goes back to 1751 when The Pennsylvania Gazette suggested that since the British kept using the United States as a prison colony by sending us their convicts, that we should pay them back by sending them a "cargo of rattlesnakes". (LINK) Three years later a political cartoon was created which depicted a snake cut into 8 segments with the caption "Join Or Die". Each section of the snake represented a colony and warned of the dangers of disunity. The rattlesnake symbol caught on and became a part of several other Revolutionary War flags. Before the departure of the United States Navyā€™s first mission in 1775, Continental Colonel Christopher Gadsden from South Carolina presented the newly appointed commander with a yellow rattlesnake flag to serve as a standard for his flagship.
According to this video titled "Don't Tread On Me" Gadsden Flag Symbolism & Meaning (LINK), since the flag was designed for the Navy, the meaning of a yellow Navy flag in 1789 meant "capital punishment on board". Thus the yellow color was meant to be a warning to any other ships who might impose on the independence of the United States colonies. Also mentioned in the video is the fact that the snake consists of 33 sections if you include the head and tail, which could be a reference to the 33 degrees of Freemasonry, or the 33 vertebrae of the Kundalini. Also, I noticed that the snake itself is basically a reversed 666. Finally, the shape of the snake symbol is triangular like an Illuminati All Seeing Eye Pyramid. So there's definitely a lot of hidden meaning behind the "Don't Tread On Me" flag it seems.
Anyway, the lyrical content of The Black Album is full of references to a slave who is oppressed by a cruel master such as "With this whipping boy done wrong" (The Unforgiven) and "Do my dirty work, scapegoat" (Sad But True). The overall theme is about rebelling against this cruel overlord, and there's literally a song called "Don't Tread On Me" with the lyrics repeatedly warning what will happen if the message is not properly heeded. "Enter Sandman" appears to be about Project Monarch Trauma Based Mind Control as well as Satanic Ritual Abuse. When it talks about, "Exit light, enter night. We're off to never never land", it's encouraging the traumatized victim to disassociate from reality by splitting off into a new personality and "going off to never never land" (referring to the fairy tale world of Peter Pan, which is a mind control theme). But the song that seems to put it all right out there what happened to Metallica is "The Unforgiven". The lyrics discuss being born into Project Monarch mind control and "learning their rules" and being "deprived of all his thoughts". Then it talks about how the child swears that they will never take away his (free) will. It then speaks about how he has turned into a bitter man who has tried to please them all. Then finally he decides it's a fight he cannot win and he no longer cares, and the old man prepares to die regretfully, "That old man here is me". This all seems to tell me exactly what happened to the original members of Metallica.
Metallica "The Unforgiven" lyrics (LINK)
New blood joins this earth,
And quickly he's subdued.
Through constant pained disgrace
The young boy learns their rules.
With time the child draws in.
This whipping boy done wrong.
Deprived of all his thoughts
The young man struggles on and on he's known
A vow unto his own,
That never from this day
His will they'll take away.
What I've felt,
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown.
Never be.
Never see.
Won't see what might have been.
What I've felt,
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown.
Never free.
Never me.
So I dub thee unforgiven.
They dedicate their lives
To running all of his.
He tries to please them all ā€“
This bitter man he is.
Throughout his life the same ā€“
He's battled constantly.
This fight he cannot win ā€“
A tired man they see no longer cares.
The old man then prepares
To die regretfully ā€“
That old man here is me.
JAMES HETFIELD BURNED BY PYROTECHNICS:
"On August 8, 1992, during the performance at Montreal's Olympic Stadium; several songs into Metallica's set, during the song Fade to Black, frontman and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield was accidentally burned by improper pyrotechnics forcing the band to cut their set short as Hetfield was rushed to the hospital." (VIDEO LINK)
I've long had a theory that Michael Jackson was replaced by a new body double in 1984 after his Pepsi commercial pyrotechnics disaster which badly burned him. So I made the connection that when James Hetfield was engulfed in flames in 1992 in Montreal by a pyrotechnics failure, it could have been a very good opportunity to switch him with a replacement. This is only a theory of course and I'm not sure if this was when James Hetfield was actually switched out, but as you'll see in the photo comparisons below, he clearly was replaced at some point (it seems likely it was in 1995 sometime before the recording of the album "Load" which took place May 1, 1995 ā€“ February 1, 1996). I also find it a little more than coincidental that Metallica was playing "Fade To Black" when this supposed accident took place.
Metallica "Fade to Black" lyrics (LINK)
Life it seems will fade away
Drifting further every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters, no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free
Things aren't what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly lost, this can't be real
Can't stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filling me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me, but now he's gone
No one but me, can save myself, but it's too late
Now I can't think, think why I should even try
Yesterday seems, as though it never existed
Death greets me warm, now I will just say goodbye (goodbye)
"LOAD" RELEASED JUNE 1996:
Load was released June 4th 1996 and was a major departure from The Black Album. The first track on he album is "Ain't My Bitch" which could be about the new Metallica members disposing of the original lineup. Load in general is a very mediocre grunge rock album that sounds literally nothing like any previous Metallica album. My theory is now that the reason the band all cut their hair and changed their facial hair around this time in their careers was to disguise the fact that they were imposters. As the evidence will show, all 4 original members of Metallica were replaced sometime around 1995 which is why Metallica has never made another good album since 1991: it's because IT'S NOT ACTUALLY METALLICA. Honestly this album is so terrible that I can't listen to it enough to go in depth on my analysis. So I'm just going to say that I find it significant that the first song of the album with Metallica 2.0 is "Ain't My Bitch" which speaks about getting rid of someone who is dragging them down who is so useless, and now it's time to say goodbye. I also find the opening lines extremely significant, "Outta my way. Outta my day. Out of your mind and into mine". This seems to be talking about how a transfer of consciousness is taking place between the old band and into the new members. Of course what this is really referring to is demonic possession.
"Ain't My Bitch" Metallica lyrics (LINK)
Outta my way
Outta my day
Out of your mind and into mine
Into no one
Into not one
Into your step but out of time
Headstrong
Whatā€™s wrong?
Iā€™ve already heard this song before
You arrived, but now itā€™s time to kiss your ass goodbye
Dragging me down
Why you around?
So useless
It ainā€™t my fall
It ainā€™t my call
It ainā€™t my bitch
It ainā€™t my bitch
Down on the sun
Down and no fun
Down and out, where the hell you been?
Damn it all down
Damn it unbound
Damn it all down to hell again
THE PHOTO EVIDENCE:

As you can see, all four original members of Metallica were very clearly replaced sometime in the early to mid 90's. There are major changes in the shape of the jaw of all 4 members. The smoking gun evidence is the comparisons which show Kirk Hammett and Lars Ulrich smiling. There's no explanation for why their teeth would have changed completely with five or so years. These are very clearly completely different human beings.

CONCLUSION:
Ever wondered why Metallica seems like a mediocre cover band which is trying (and failing) desperately to sound like it used to? Ever wondered why all four members of Metallica suddenly decided to cut off their iconic heavy metal long hair and started wearing eye shade and earrings? It's because THIS IS NOT METALLICA. The last album that was recorded by the original members of Metallica was The Black Album in 1991. James Hetfield and the other members of Metallica were tired of being "Whipping boys done wrong" who were "deprived of all his thoughts". They decided to tell the Illuminati, "Don't Tread On Me" with their magnum opus "The Black Album", and they unfortunately paid the ultimate price. Notice this line which is a direct reference to The Illuminati and it's All Seeing Eye, "Shining with brightness, always on surveillance. The eyes, they never close, emblem of vigilance". Metallica is literally telling The Illuminati, "Don't Tread On Me".
Don't tread on me
I said, don't tread on me
Liberty or death, what we so proudly hail
Once you provoke her, rattling of her tail
Never begins it, never, but once engaged
Never surrenders, showing the fangs of rage
I said don't tread on me
So be it
Threaten no more
To secure peace is to prepare for war
So be it
Settle the score
Touch me again for the words that you'll hear evermore
Hey
Don't tread on me
Love it or leave it, she with the deadly bite
Quick is the blue tongue, forked as lighting strike
Shining with brightness, always on surveillance
The eyes, they never close, emblem of vigilance
Ooh no, no, no don't tread on me
