I'm writing this after yet another night of drunken delirium. I'm not sure what exactly my goal is with posting this, but this is my first time ever sitting down and writing out my thoughts, putting out my close-kept experience to the world.
I'm a 28 year old guy living in a big city. I'm in a relationship, and we've been together for two years.
For YEARS, alcohol and cigarettes have been a huge dependency. I've gone back and forth, taken breaks, been good about my consumption, then hit rock bottom. I do better, but then I slip again. Rinse & repeat. For the past several weeks, though (5 to 6 weeks), my addiction has plummeted to a place worse than I've ever been. Almost every single night, I break down and buy a pack of beer and inevitably drink 6-12 beers and chain smoke til I can't walk straight. Sometimes I'll fall asleep on the couch, to make my way to bed early in the morning. Sometimes I go to bed right away, only to toss and turn for the rest of the night, worrying my partner about my sleep habits.
My partner does not like that I smoke, at all. It's been a problem we've been open about for a while, and I've assured him that I'm trying to quit. It's gotten to the point where he thinks I'm only smoking 1 or 2 a day, while in reality I'm sneaking outside repeatedly to get a smoke in. This goes hand in hand with alcohol. He thinks I'm drinking 1 or 2 a night, but the truth I keep to myself. He's aware that I have a drinking problem, but is nowhere close to the truth. I've been pretty careful to not let him see my used up cans / bottles, but the pressure and anxiety that comes from covering up my problem is getting to me.
I have a stable job that I've worked for 4 years, and have since had the opportunity to kind of work as I please. The opportunity this presents for my addictive personality is bleak. At this point, I am able to stay at home in the morning and do whatever I want, without anyone really knowing what I'm up to. I could be working for all they know, or I could be goofing off and shirking my work. Most of the time I do get work done, but the stress of hoping no one catches on to my behavior is also quite draining. I have one person that reports to me, and thankfully, she has a very high acumen to handle things while I'm away. That being said, we have a sort of unspoken understanding that if she doesn't ask what my deal is, all will be well. It's quite manipulative on my part, but I've always been this way to some extent. I've learned to be comfortable with the chaos and sliding under the radar.
Several months ago, I saw a psychiatrist to get back on a stimulant that I was on in high school. Back then, I was diagnosed with pretty severe ADHD, so I took Vyvance to help me focus and get work done. My symptoms are quite thematic with what other ADHD'ers experience, and being on the stimulant has been a major boon to my productivity and the things I can get done. That being said, I'm full well aware that the ability to get drunk off my ass, then take the stimulant in the morning to overcome my hangover (which is a quite powerful tool) is a major problem. It allows me to perpetuate my behavior, and rise to solid dopamine levels halfway through the day. I return to normal, get shit done, and convince myself that everything is alright. By the time the day is winding down, I grab myself some beers, and start the ritual all over again.
Like I said, this has been going on for well over a month at this point, and my daily cigarette intake has skyrocketed to 8-10 per day. It's never been that bad. I'm tired, stressed, anxious, depressed, and completely dissatisfied with every aspect of my life. I don't know what to do, and thinking about working myself out of this pit is just one more factor that helps me justify going numb and forgetting my problems.
I'm worried for my health, and when I actually think about what I'm doing to myself, concerned that I might just drop dead.
Like I said, I don't know exactly what I hope to gain from writing this, but if anyone has any sage wisdom or advice... I'm more than willing to listen.

What’s the #1 thing every founder needs to know?

I’ll give you a few minutes to make a list — top of mind might include sales, marketing, technology, product management (especially product-market fit), technical skills, fundraising, team building, leadership, management, finance, and planning/executing strategic growth and scaling.
Sure… but, sorry, none of that is the correct answer. Because, of course, you know that founders typically are expected to be jacks of all trades. So yes, to all of the above, but that’s not the secret sauce.
The #1 thing every founder needs to know is… themself.
Here’s the truth: founders start companies, and entrepreneurs build them. While not every entrepreneur is a founder (think franchise owners), every founder is an entrepreneur (at least initially).
If you’re like me, you are a forward-obsessed founder. That means where you are now is always building toward where you want to go. That person is always an entrepreneur. Once the company is started, you’ll do what it takes — including relinquishing control — to keep it growing.
Does that sting? We founders think of our companies as our babies, but statistics say we’re likely to be the ones kicked out of the nest. Also, research shows that in the US, only 14 out of the top selling 500 companies still have the original founder running the company. And the Harvard Business Review reports that most founders relinquish control long before their companies go public — and that four out of five are forced to step down as CEO.
It doesn’t have to be that way if you have one critical attribute: self-awareness. That way, you can decide as your company grows how you want to evolve your role in the overall day-to-day running of the company (i.e., learn, delegate, hire, move on). And ultimately, you can make better choices at critical growth junctures in your business progression.
So, to help you become more self-aware, it’s helpful to understand the different types of founders. Let’s dive in.

The Types of Founders

A couple of notes before we get into specifics:

Much like any other classification, there are gray areas, so you (and many of the examples I share in this article) may fit into more than one category.
Some traits are common to all founders, such as being open to innovation, passionate about their project, risk-takers, etc. But some founders excel or even over-index in certain attributes, so that’s what you’ll see in the different types.

The bottom line: knowing your strongest/weakest points is a critical piece of the self-awareness pie. That way, you can conduct your business in what I call the Green Zone — aka the Genius Zone, where you have both high passion and high competence — and make the best choices for you and your company.

1. The Solo Founder

Traits:

Fiercely independent
Self-assured
Strong belief in their vision/idea
Business strongly tied to skill set and experience
Resilient (i.e., can withstand feelings of loneliness)

Benefits:

Freedom
Complete control
Learn a lot

Pitfalls:

Solo-founded companies statistically have a higher failure rate
Harder to raise money/VCs are more reticent
Health impacts: burnout, loneliness, etc.
Attention is divided because you wear all the hats (marketing, sales, building your product, finances, fundraising, prospecting for new customers, etc.)
Complete responsibility for all aspects of the business

Example: Sara Blakely, Spanx Founder
Ten years ago, in 2012, when she was just 38, Sara Blakely became the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire. Her business, built on a significant industry gap (the lack of comfortable, effective shapewear) and her incredible sales hustle, also benefited greatly from Blakely’s abundant self-awareness. Here’s her advice to solo founders at a 2020 business conference:

“I tell people as soon as you can afford to hire your weaknesses, do it… As soon as I could afford to hire someone to do more of the operations side of the business, I did. As an entrepreneur, one of the biggest gifts you can give yourself is to stay in your lane.”

In other words, know what your Green Zone is and play there.
If you’re like Blakely, it’s usually big ideas and sales ability (she could easily qualify as a Visionary Founder, too) or operations and execution (what Blakely realized she needed help with).
Pro tip: If you’re a solo founder, you’ll likely want to lean into an entrepreneurial framework like the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) to help you define and settle into which side you skew toward.

2. The Visionary Founder (or Co-founders)

Traits:

Driven by a big idea
Disruptive — recognizes opportunities to upend traditional norms
Focused and clear
Persistent
Natural salesperson
Can see the big picture
Collaborative (esp. In co-founder scenario)
Motivated by the impact they have — more than $$ alone

Benefits:

Passionate about their work
Aren’t easily derailed — failures are expected, and mistakes are not made twice
Inspired leadership

Pitfalls:

So focused on the big picture that they may miss important details
A visionary idea doesn’t automatically = visionary leadership
Disconnected from reality at times
Easily bored when the mundane takes priority
May not plan succession well
Unrealistic expectations
Poor communication

Example: Steve Jobs & Steve Wozniak
Considering that Steve Jobs’ name is pretty much synonymous with “visionary,” I don’t think I need to list more than the products and industries Jobs’ revolutionized at Apple and beyond — Apple Computers, iPod (iTunes), iPad, iPhone, Pixar, iCloud — with many products and points in between. George Lucas, from whom Jobs bought the Graphics Group at Lucasfilm and renamed it “Pixar,” perfectly summarizes his superpower:

“The magic of Steve was that while others simply accepted the status quo, he saw the true potential in everything he touched and never compromised on that vision.”

Steve Wozniak was the technological yin to Jobs’ sales and marketing yang, bringing the vision of a computer with a graphic interface to life. From the visionary files, “Woz” also invented the first programmable universal remote and was an early innovator of wireless GPS (thanks to his clever dogs who routinely evaded electronic fences).

3. The Serial Disruptor

Traits:

Varied interests & capabilities
Easily bored — desires variety and change
Optimistic
Extremely innovative
High threshold for pain
Accepting of failure
Self-reliant
Diverse capabilities
Bold vision
Motivated by the impact they have — more than $$ alone

Benefits:

Variety of experiences
Flexibility and freedom
Diversification
Tons of opportunities for creative expression
Greater earning opportunities
Disrupts industries
Attracts high-quality talent

Pitfalls:

High risk
Difficulties finding trustworthy partners/can get stuck helming something when you want to move on
Multitudes of people reliant on you

Example: Elon Musk
Like him or loathe him, Elon Musk is perhaps the most prolific (and successful) serial founder of all time with startups including Tesla, SpaceX, The Boring Company, and Neuralink, among others. His drive to design opportunities to evolve humanity has redefined both hustle culture and the art of serial entrepreneurship.
For serial founders, having a set of principles is key to their success. In Musk’s case, his use of “first principles” — reducing a process to its essential parts — has served him well, from helping him figure out how to make rockets cheaper and reusable (SpaceX) to shifting the narrative of electric vehicles (Tesla).

4. The Engineer

Traits:

Engineer by experience and nature
Technically savvy
Able to problem-solve technology-driven issues (not just with the product but also operations-wise)
Strong desire to not just innovate but also to accelerate progress
Expansive vision of how technology can solve common problems
Level-headed
Agile, fast learners
Focused on execution

Benefits:

Pragmatic approach
Own technology
Problems are solved quickly
Able to employ technology to reduce time to market
Solutions for products can become new products in their own right

Pitfalls:

Not well versed in other crucial areas (i.e., sales, marketing)
Over-index on having lower Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
Because they can learn quickly, so may get stuck playing outside of the green zone

Example: Mark Zuckerberg
Much like the other examples I’m sharing, Mark Zuckerberg’s story has been widely told, so you probably know about his development of Facebook. But at his core, Zuckerberg is an engineering prodigy and geek. At just 13 in 1997, he built “ZuckNet,” which enabled the family’s home computers to communicate via Ping (a precursor of AOL’s Instant Messenger) with his father’s dental office computers. He was using AI in his senior year in high school, so the roots of his Meta(verse) focus today are apparent.
A common weakness for engineers is they tend to have a lower EQ, which has been well-researched. As a former engineer, I understand how logic and technology come easier than understanding human behavior. This is why tech founders should seek out mentors early and bring in competent leaders with high EQ and leadership skills — for example, Zuckerberg credits his former COO of 14 years, Sheryl Sandberg, for turning the company into a multi-billion dollar company.

5. The Personality Founder

Traits:

Charismatic and gregarious
Attracts a vast audience
Influential
Ambitious
Forward-thinking
Inwardly motivated (responds to a “calling”)
Excellent storytellers
Authentic and honest (ideally 😉)

Benefits:

Has a built-in audience and established social platforms
Likely has pre-existing wealth (can help fund the business/mitigate startup money woes)
Can use their power for good; disruptive in a positive way

Pitfalls:

Needs to find the right people to trust
Can’t just be the “face” of the business; needs to accrue real business chops
Celebrity and influence status don’t equal quality products
Difficult or impossible for the founder to leave

Example: Oprah
I’m using Oprah as an example, as her products are an outgrowth of her — her eponymous talk show, which ran for 25 years, the OWN network, O Magazine, her book club, and a variety of charitable endeavors comprise her vast empire. But of course, we know plenty of other personality brands that have racked up billions in sales and even transformed, from the Kardashians/Jenners, to Bethany Frankel and Ryan Reynolds (just watch Deadpool 3 to see his brands — coming in 2023).
In today’s age of influence, we’ve seen a surge of personality brands and founders who leverage built-in audiences and communities to scale quickly. All these names are business mavericks in their own right, but many didn’t start out this way — they deftly utilize their charisma and ability to entertain to shape their brands and pave the way to success.

6. The Accidental Founder

Traits:

Independent
Resourceful
Necessity-driven
Follow their desire/passion
Creative
Willing to take risks

Benefits:

A deep belief in what they’re doing
Solves real-world problems based on personal experience
Discover they’re much happier running their own show
Turns skills, vocation, or avocation into a profitable business

Pitfalls:

May not have the business chops
Reluctant business person — may not actually want to run their own business
Needs to find the right people to trust
Overwhelm

Example: Yvon Chouinard
Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard has been in the news lately for giving away his company to fight climate change. He’s an OG accidental entrepreneur whose passion for rock climbing led him to develop reusable pitons (rock climbing spikes) and, later, heavy-duty shirts. Famously Chouinard called himself a “dirtbag climber” and didn’t want to become a business mogul. Sixty-five years later, this accidental founder’s company is valued at $3 billion, and his latest innovation is a way of giving away the profits of a company to continue his contribution to society — protecting and preserving the natural world.
As I always say, there are riches in the niches, and accidental entrepreneurs are the leading type of founders to discover a marketplace with little or no competition.

7. The Intentional Founder

Traits:

Purpose-driven
Strong ideals and values
Passionate about the bigger picture impacts
Socially conscious
Clear and focused on the brand mission

Benefits:

An empathetic approach to the product/the company
Can educate, empower, and motivate others (i.e., team, customers)
Employees are statistically more satisfied and likely to stay
Commitment to a higher ideal engenders more loyalty and trust with the general public (customers)

Pitfalls:

Moving from individual ideals to a group effort is tricky
Difficult to find employees with perfectly aligned values
Might not have the business experience to set the organization up for long-term success
Purpose-driven (belief) isn’t the same as purpose-enabled (capability)
Might be challenging for the company to survive the loss of the founder

Example: Jessica Alba
While Jessica Alba does have some touches of a Personality Founder (she is an actor) and an Accidental Founder (an allergic reaction to detergent made her worry about her new baby’s sensitive skin), she is an excellent example of an intentional founder. Back in 2008, when Alba had that allergic reaction, influencer marketing wasn’t what it is today — plus, she had some success but was by no means a household name. Ditto for eco-conscious consumer packaged goods — a plus, sure, but didn’t have the same urgency and importance it does today. Alba then spent years researching ingredients in everyday products and even went to DC to lobby for updates to the 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act. Convinced that consumers need safe, affordable, environmentally friendly products for kids and home, Alba launched The Honest Company in 2011.
Now, she did have seasoned co-founders, her own wealth to use out the gates, and VC support shortly after that, but it has always been Alba’s commitment to and alignment with the brand’s core principles that have kept the brand growing and thriving — today, as a publicly traded company with a 2021 $412.8 IPO.

FIRST, WHAT IS THE RED CROSS?
The Red Cross was founded in 1863 by Henry Dunant, a Swiss businessman horrified by what he witnessed in the Italian battlefield during the Battle of Volturno. By 1933, the Red Cross was the central humanitarian player in drafting the modern laws of war. In fact, the Red Cross organized the conference that drafted the original Geneva Convention.

ANTISEMITIC BIAS
The Red Cross has a long history of antisemitic bias; most notably, it served as a propaganda mouthpiece for Nazi Germany and even helped top level Nazis escape prosecution.
After the Holocaust, Jewish survivors not only accused the Red Cross of doing little to help them find surviving family members, but also accused them of being apathetic and having “no feeling.”
But the bias didn’t end there. The Red Cross refused to recognize the Magen David Adom (Red Star of David) until 2006, even though it had long admitted the Muslim Red Crescent. This rejection was hardly just a symbolic issue, as it denied the Magen David Adom protection under international law.
Much like the Red Cross served as a Nazi propaganda mouthpiece during World War II, the Red Cross has periodically parroted Hamas propaganda over the years, only to later take back their claims, after the damage has already been done.

WHY ARE JEWS ANGRY WITH THE RED CROSS?
Since the October 7 massacre, Israel and Jews around the world have asked for the Red Cross to be permitted to visit the hostages held in Gaza, many of whom have chronic health conditions and/or disabilities and one of whom was around nine months pregnant. Unsurprisingly, Hamas has denied the Red Cross access, much like it has denied them access to other hostages and prisoners of war in the past, in complete violation of international law.
Though we hardly expect Hamas to act rationally, the Red Cross, which is in contact with Hamas, has made little tangible effort to access the hostages or information about their condition, or to even contact most of their families. Instead, it has dedicated most of its attention to condemning the Israeli bombings of the Gaza Strip. It has also chastised Israel about a new wartime law that passed in the Israeli Knesset regarding the conditions of security prisoners if a “prison emergency” is declared.

A LONG HISTORY OF ANTISEMITISM
By the start of World War II, the Red Cross, which was based in neutral Switzerland, had a policy of non-interference and “neutrality” regarding the Nazis’ racial policies.
The Red Cross chose only to concern itself with the treatment of prisoners of war from countries that had signed the 1929 Geneva Convention. However, they opted not to interfere regarding the treatment of civilians.
Following Hitler’s rise to power in 1933, the Red Cross chose to “conform” to the new regime, rather than oppose it. In fact, an SS general, Ernst-Robert Grawitz, became the head of the German Red Cross in 1933. Grawitz was closely involved in the plans to murder disabled people and in Nazi medical experimentation. The German Red Cross thus essentially became a Nazi medical unit, rather than a humanitarian organization. When pressed about it, the German Red Cross claimed that, by allying themselves with the Nazi regime, they’d have access to concentration camps, which would ensure that the inmates would be “treated better.”

THE RED CROSS KNEW ABOUT THE HOLOCAUST AS THE HOLOCAUST WAS CARRIED OUT
In the 1990s, the Red Cross finally officially admitted that they’d long had previous knowledge of the Nazis’ plans for the total extermination of Jews and Roma.
As early as 1933, the Red Cross received desperate pleas from prisoners in Dachau concentration camp, begging for intervention. By 1942, the Red Cross had full knowledge of the Germans’ atrocities. In early 1945, the president of the Red Cross wrote, “Concerning the Jewish problem in Germany, we are in close and continual contact with the German authorities.” The use of the phrase “Jewish problem,” of course, is indicative of the attitude of the Red Cross, considering the very same phrase was used in the Nazis’ “final solution to the Jewish problem” (in other words, the Nazi plan for the total genocide of the Jewish People).

THE RED CROSS PEDDLED NAZI PROPAGANDA
By 1943, word of German atrocities toward the Jewish People had spread throughout the world. Following the deportation of ~500 Danish Jews to Theresienstadt, the Danish authorities pressured the International Red Cross to visit the camp/ghetto to check on its conditions.
The Nazis saw this visit as an opportunity to spread their propaganda. Nearly 8000 Jews were immediately sent to Auschwitz to counteract reports of overcrowding in Theresienstadt. In Auschwitz, these Jews were placed in a “special unit” in the event that the Red Cross chose to visit them.
The camp/ghetto was “cleaned up.” For example, buildings were painted and a football field was staged. “Cultural activities” were promoted to create the illusion that the Jewish prisoners were thriving. The Red Cross officials were taken on a tour of a pre-planned route and interviewed prisoners who’d been trained on what to say. Unsurprisingly, the Red Cross left Theresienstadt with a glowing report.

THE RED CROSS HELPED NAZIS ESCAPE AFTER WORLD WAR II
Both the Red Cross and the Vatican were responsible for the escape of thousands of high-level Nazi officials after the end of the war. In fact, the two worked together to ensure their escape. The Red Cross alone was responsible for issuing around 120,000 travel documents, many to Nazis. They also issued 25,000 new identity documents. It was due to the actions of the Red Cross that high-level war criminals such as Adolf Eichmann and Josef Mengele were able to escape.
To this day, the Red Cross has refused to comment on these findings, claiming that the travel documents were “misused” by war criminals, rather than acknowledging that the organization took an active role in ensuring their escape. The Red Cross also claims that individual Nazi sympathizers within the organization were responsible for this; in other words, this was a problem of a few bad apples. In reality, recent findings show that this was a systemic problem and that high-level Red Cross officials were well-aware of the issue.
In the decades after the war, the Red Cross continually whitewashed its actions both during and after the Holocaust, only admitting to some wrongdoing in the 1990s.

OBFUSCATING MORAL CLARITY
There are few situations in life where the moral stance should be crystal clear. Opposition to Hamas — and to the Nazis — is one of these cases. Yet, much like the Hamas propaganda machine has worked overtime to obfuscate the moral clarity of 10/7, so did the Red Cross obfuscate the moral clarity of bringing Nazi war criminals to justice.
The second in command at the Red Cross, Carl Jacob Burckhardt, even decried the Nuremberg Trials, calling them “Jewish revenge.”

My boyfriend (23M) and his sister (25F) are very close. Their parents divorced when they were really young and it was a messy situation, with their mom cheating, etc. My boyfriend lived with their mom and still does since he’s finishing his bachelor’s degree, while his sister lived with their dad until she turned 18. She started working full-time while studying at 19 to afford a nice place for herself. Now she’s finishing her master’s in technical physics and works as an engineer, so she makes a lot of money. She likes to spoil my boyfriend since according to her, she never received any help and wants him to life a not-so-stressful life. She talked to him about maybe picking up a 15-20hr job to help cover the bills (food etc.) but he is too stressed with his bachelor's degree so that's completely unreasonable for her to ask.
My boyfriend spends a lot of time at his sister’s place. He doesn’t sleep there but goes home around 10 PM every day, claiming he can concentrate better there. She even gave him his own workspace and upgraded her internet for both of them (that is so weird, he is not her child, who does that for their sibling). Since my parents don’t like my boyfriend because he’s not active in the church and we can’t afford to live together, we talk on the phone a lot during the day and evening. This was never an issue for his sister until recently when she started complaining that our calls were distracting her. I politely told her that maybe she can work at the office more often (currently 3 days office, 2 days homeoffice) so we don't bother her as much. This didn't work for her since she has to do laundry, etc. during weekdays since she has to focus on writing her thesis on the weekends. Then I suggested that since she earns a lot, she could help us afford an apartment. She agreed and found a place for about 1k a month, a 55 sqm 2-bedroom. At first, I thought she was joking, but she seemed excited for us. However, I told her it was too small for us because I need a room to paint since I’m an artist. She then said she couldn’t afford to help with a bigger place. Her excuse was that she doesn’t make enough to cover that. I know that she is saving at least 500 euro a month so this is just an excuse to not help family.
Our parents can’t help us financially—his mom is on financial aid, his dad is undergoing cancer treatment, and my parents would never help. I know for a fact that she can afford it, so I told her that if she can’t help us get a bigger place, she has no right to complain about our phone calls.
I ended up calling her a controlling asshole and a horrible sister for trying to destroy our relationship. She started crying and has now kicked my boyfriend out until "he pulls his weight", so he has to stay at his mom’s place full time. AITA for thinking she could easily help us with an apartment and calling her controlling?

A good friend of mine from a fairly conservative evangelical background is considering becoming a pastor at his non-denominational church. As part of the evaluation process, they asked him to write a paper on these topics that he is not an expert on.
He asked for my opinion and I offered to share it online to solicit constructive criticism, notes of encouragement, and or reading recommendations on these topics.
I believe his goal is to be faithful to the scriptures, loving to those outside the church, and challenging to those inside the church, as most of us could do better.
What he wrote is in the quotation marks below.
“1: Scope of the Issue
Sexual immorality has become a besetting and ubiquitous issue in our culture and in our churches. While many aspects of it are not novel or unique to this time and have clear scriptural input, there are others that bring challenges to our church for which we don’t have obvious precedent. The main point of these comments is to try and answer three questions with some degree of specificity: (1) how do we make ourselves a place where people who do not know Christ will feel welcome to come and learn of Him regardless of where they come from, (2) how do we pastorally care for people who have come in to the church with pre-existing circumstances related to sexual immorality, and (3) how do we equip our members to represent Christ to those in their lives that are dealing with these issues. We want to do this in a way that does not “walk a tight rope” or compromise to appease, but honors Scripture in its commands to both show compassion and exhort and correct. We must recognize that every individual circumstance is unique, and many will require careful and prayerful consideration, but this is meant to give a framework for that consideration.
2: Scriptural Basis for Corporate Response
There are many references we can point to that discuss and define sexual immorality throughout Scripture and many of these will be used below as we consider specific examples and situations. Let us start, however, by looking at passages that deal with corporate response rather than individual sin. It is clear that the Corinthian church had significant issues in this area, and much of Paul’s first letter was devoted to it. In chapter 5, Paul states that when sexual immorality is discovered in the church we should “mourn” over it and “not to associate with immoral people.” Importantly, he also makes clear in vv. 9-13 that these comments only apply to those “who bears the name of brother.” He explicitly writes, “not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world…for what have I to do with judging outsiders?” This is key in informing our response to those who are not members of the church. If it is our desire to see sinners come through our doors and come to know our Savior through our ministry, then we must be welcoming, accepting them where they are. This is not to say we hide or compromise the biblical position, but it is not an issue on which we want to filter people at the door. There are three categories of people in sexual sin that we need to form a response for. First, those just coming to the church who have not committed to it – these should be treated the same as any we are reaching out to with Christ’s love. They need Jesus, not behavioral change. Next, those who have recently joined the church but have pre-existing sexual sin patterns. This can and should be addressed with patience, dignity, and love. There are often many sin areas in the life of a new believer, and it is prudent to discern how and when to address each of them. Lastly, those who have been members in the church for some amount of time and fall into sexual sin. This is the group that Paul is primarily addressing in 1 Corinthians. While sex within marriage is a private issue, sexual sin cannot be a taboo topic. It needs to be addressed regularly and clearly. We need close enough relationships within the church that such problems do not fester in the dark. We must avoid the typical church pattern to vilify the first group, never see the second group, and pretend the third group doesn’t exist until it all blows up in scandal. May it never be.
3: Consistency Issue
There is a tendency in our Christian culture to treat some sexual sins as worse than others. Like the Corinthians, some things we seem to have accepted as just ubiquitous parts of our culture. Knowing the prevalence of promiscuity and fornication among teens and single adults and usage of pornography even within the church, we tend to address these as issues of indwelling sin, similar to anger or fear of man, with offers of accountability and understanding when someone falls. By contrast, when it comes to homosexuality or adultery, it is often a church discipline issue. We view homosexual marriage as a major problem, but remarriage after a non-biblical divorce is rarely addressed. These inconsistencies lead to stigmatization and polarization and should have no place in the church. The criterion for escalation should be unrepentance, not the nature of the sexual sin. It is clear from 1 Corinthians that all should be taken seriously, but none should be vilified above others.
4: Culture and Identity
The major underlying problem with many of the sexual sin and gender issues is that they have come to be culturally bound up with people’s identities. This is not a new phenomenon and is not unique to this issue. As far back as Acts 19, you see people becoming “enraged” because Paul had threatened the Ephesians’ cultural identity as worshipers of Artemis. People continue to find their primary identities in their employment, hobbies, sports teams, or families rather than Christ. None of these should be accepted, but none should be reviled either. If a person does not know Jesus, they are dead. How they identify themselves is of no concern. Once they have been made alive, they can be taught that “whose” they are is more important than “who” they are. All identity outside of Christ is not sinful, but if it takes paramount importance, it may become so. A person who recognizes a tendency toward same sex attraction may label themselves as gay or lesbian. This should not be considered a sin issue unless it becomes, for them, their defining characteristic or leads to sinful actions. We should recognize the difficulty of this struggle and support such a person rather than get hung up on labels. There must be clear distinction between identifying same sex attraction and engaging in homosexual behavior. These should be the guiding principles underlying everything that follows are regards individual cases.
5: Public Facing Information, Guests, and New Attendees
Considering what we have discussed, and Paul’s assertion in 1 Corinthians 5 that we ought to reserve judgment on sexual immorality to those we call brother, I would submit that public facing information regarding the church (i.e. website, app, etc) should not publish a position on sexual immorality, marriage, and gender identity. Doing so effectively places the filter at the door so that people who do not know Christ may be turned away from it. This is not tantamount to tacit approval. In appropriate contexts within the church, these topics should still be discussed and addressed, but I do not believe it is consistent with a biblical treatment of unbelievers to place it in a public facing forum. If we have guests or new regular attendees who appear to be engaged in a cohabitating or fornicating relationship, a homosexual relationship, or other sexual sin, this should not be a priority to address unless we have discerned that they are believers and join the church. Even then, it is important to draw a distinction between someone who deals with same-sex attraction and someone who engages in homosexual behavior. The next seven points are meant to discuss, in broad terms, how we should address those who join the church with pre-existing relationships or identity issues:
6: Promiscuity, Cohabitation – Hebrews 13:4, 1 Cor 7:1-2, Ex 22:16
Much of the biblical discussion on promiscuity is by inference. Clearly, sex was meant to be inseparably linked to marriage and outside of that context should be considered immoral. For those who join the church already in a sexual relationship who are unmarried we should apply Exodus 22:16 and encourage them to marry as soon as possible. If they do not wish to marry, they should be encouraged to separate. Paul acknowledges in 1 Cor 7:2 that marriage is the best remedy for “temptation to sexual immorality.”
7: Adultery, Divorce and Remarriage – Matt 5:32, Matt 19:9, 1 Cor 7:10-11
This issue is given much more explicit biblical instruction but is often glossed over in our Christian culture due to the messy landscape of divorces and remarriages. In cases where non-biblical divorce has occurred, if reconciliation is possible, this should be pursued. If reconciliation is impossible because one or more parties have remarried, it would not be sensible to divorce again in order to achieve reconciliation. The principle to apply here, I believe, is from 1 Cor 7:17-24 summarized in verse 20: “Each one should remain in the condition in which he was called.” This is not an ideal circumstance, but it is the best way forward in an imperfect world. Of note, polygamy was common in the culture of the early church, and while not ideal, was accepted by the church, as evidenced by the qualifications for elder to be “a husband of but one wife.” We have polygamous cultures even within our local community and if they came to Christ, we should not counsel them to divorce all but one wife and thus disrupt their social structure. It is not ideal and would disqualify them from eldership, but they should remain as they are. Whether marriage after unbiblical divorce in the past disqualifies a man from eldership is a case-by case question for the eldership.
8: Pornography, Sensuality, and Lust – Lev 18:6-18, Matt 5:28
As mentioned above, use of pornography has reached a high saturation point within our culture and within our church. While once thought of as simply a male issue, there is a growing trend toward gender parity in pornography usage. It is an issue that should be discussed with some frequency within our church. For those that join the church and view pornography regularly, it needs to be made clear that while the world has largely destigmatized it, it is still sexual immorality. Furthermore, this isn’t just limited to nudity and pornography, but any sensuality that leads to looking at someone “with lustful intent” is the heart equivalent of adultery according to Matt 5:28. In our culture, it is not possible to avoid such things by just turning away. We need to address the heart issues of idolatry, selfishness, and satisfaction in Christ. Practically, how should we deal with those who have on-going struggles with pornography, sensuality and lust? Should this preclude them from eldership? From deaconship? Taken strictly, this would preclude nearly all men from eldership. These require individual evaluation from the elders, but a guiding principle should be, if the person is repentant and there is evidence of growth in their life, we should consider more responsibility and continued discipleship.
9: Homosexuality – Lev 18:22, Lev 20:13, 1 Cor 6:9, 1 Tim 1:8-11
From the above references and others, it is evident that homosexual behavior is sexual sin. We cannot equivocate on that point. As we have discussed above, if a person who is already a believer and in the church and struggles with same sex attraction, we should approach them as we would handle anyone who is sexually attracted to someone to whom they are not married. If such a person decides that homosexuality is not sinful and begins sexually immoral activity, we should deal with them in the same way as any member who falls into unrepentant sin and go through the processes of correction and, if necessary, of church discipline. It is important that we draw a distinction between same sex attraction and homosexual behavior. We can do tremendous harm by demonizing same sex attraction and creating a taboo around it. A person who is struggling to abstain from homosexual behavior should be supported and encouraged. I believe Paul’s strong statements about not associating with sexually immoral people applies to those who remain unrepentant. Much more nuanced is the issue of how we address those that join the church already in a homosexual relationship. What about the married homosexual couple who join the church with their adopted child? Should we break up their family? I believe, in this case, the same principle should apply as to those who have gone through an unbiblical divorce in the past. We should apply 1 Cor 7:20: “Each one should remain in the condition in which he was called.” We can recognize that this is not ideal, but it is the best we can do in a fallen world just as we do with someone who is married after unbiblical divorce. Whether should apply to a homosexual couple in a long term committed relationship who are not legally married would be an individual discussion with the elders. Again, these are nuanced cases that will need individual prayer, discussion, and discernment. I believe a great deal more patience is called for when a new believer joins the church that has a history or present reality of homosexuality, even if they are unrepentant at first, believing that homosexuality is not sinful, than we would demonstrate to a person who has been in the church for a period of time and then decides to pursue a homosexual relationship.
10: Bisexuality – Heb 13:4
Bisexual attraction is no more or less of an issue than anyone who finds that they are sexually attracted to someone other than their spouse. This is not a rare or unique circumstance, even within the church. Someone who is practicing bisexuality is, by definition, not confining sex to the marriage bed, and this, therefore, qualifies as sexual immorality. The issue, here again, is one of identity and cultural acceptance. If a person “identifies as bisexual,” the real issue is not the bisexuality, but the fact that they identify themselves primarily by their sexual desires, and not by Christ. It would be equally a problem if they “identified as heterosexual” and that was seen as their defining characteristic. If such a person were to join the church, our priority should be in helping them see their identity in Christ rather than focusing on renouncing their sexual preference.
11: Transgenderism/Non-binarism – Psalm 139: 13-15
It should be noted that the next two points should not be considered in the category of sexual immorality, but as they are connected to the same cultural moment will be discussed here. It should further be remarked that transgenderism is a modern issue with no direct reference in Scripture. It is a challenging issue that often falls prey to oversimplification and scapegoating. It is not sufficient to simply state that a person should identify with their born gender. There are those born with ambiguous genitalia and those born with sex chromosome abnormalities such that “born gender” is not necessarily accurate. These occur with a frequency of 1 in 448 births on average which is not particularly rare. The majority of people who consider themselves to be transgender do not fall into these categories, but the fact remains that these categories exist. Unless we plan to embark on genetic testing, we must be careful how we assert someone’s gender assignment. Furthermore, we must acknowledge that much of the gender confusion in our culture is due to a distortion of biblically accurate masculinity and femininity in our culture of which the church has been widely supportive for generations. Many transgender and non-binary individuals consider themselves so because they do not fit into the traditional boxes our culture has created for the genders. The church can start by recognizing that these boxes are incorrect. We can also acknowledge that gender differences and roles are far less important than most human cultures perceive. Christ himself challenged many gender norms in his ministry and Paul maintains “…there is no male or female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Gal 3:28b) It is much more difficult to recognize this issue as a sin issue than many of the above concerns. If someone wishes to be addressed by different pronouns than they once did or dress differently than they once did, this does not amount to immorality. Once again, this can be an idolatrous identity issue if the person sees it as the central characteristic of their lives. There is often an inherent pride in asserting that such a person does not feel they fit in the body created for them, but if they come to love Jesus and understand and believe that they are “fearfully and wonderfully made” then this issue may become moot. Whether or not they revert to dressing differently or using pronouns they did when they were younger is largely immaterial. This also addresses the issue of people who may have undergone permanent physical changes. While we should not endorse such modification if it is being considered, there is no reason to reverse such a thing in order to return to a base state. We must recognize that this is a group that has a high propensity toward mental health concerns, instability, and suicidality. They need love, support and prayer, not scapegoating and extra-biblical expectations of conforming to a cultural norm. We must further note that this group as well as the homosexual group have often experienced psychological and even physical harm from others in our culture, sometimes in the name of Christ. We must foster an environment of champions physical and psychological safety for these people.
12: Asexuality – 1 Cor 7:25-38
Asexuality also should not be considered sexual immorality. There is, in fact, wide support in Paul’s letters such as in 1 Cor 7 for people, if they are able, to remain unmarried and be “anxious about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord.” We tend to champion the model of the nuclear family in our Christian culture, but Paul sees chaste singleness as a better way. There should be no pressure from the church to make sure that single people pair off and get married because it is expected of them. As this state has been culturally identified with the LGBTQIA movement, it is seen on the same spectrum as the sexual immorality and gender issues discussed above, but it is not. It can still fall prey to the same issue of an idolatrous identity as some of the above issues, but it need not be so.
13: Glass Ceiling
In the event that God sees fit to bring people from these subgroups into our church, there would inevitably be a glass ceiling. The question is at what point. The four logical points are: regular attender, member, deacon, and elder. Regardless of their background or position, all should be welcome to be a regular attender. It is also clear, from the biblical requirements for eldership, that on-going problems or engagement in any of the sexual sins would disqualify them from that post. The middle two are less clear. I would submit that the bar for membership should be very low. This step, in my opinion, is when they would “bear the name of brother” and not before. Even if they disagree about the sinful nature of homosexuality, this should not disallow them from becoming members as long as they agree to submit to the churches position and not cause division. Allowing them to become members gives us the pastoral authority to speak into their lives, and we would hope that over time the Spirit would work in their hearts to convince them of the truth. Putting such a person in a deacon role would probably not be wise but would need to be evaluated prayerfully on a case-by-case basis. The difficulty here is that, while a position on homosexuality is not a salvific issue and should not be considered a core doctrine in the same way as the deity of Christ, for example, it is a sin issue. There is a limit to how far we can “agree to disagree” and still uphold our duty to root out sin in our midst. Once again, we should also distinguish between a struggle with same sex attraction and engagement in homosexual behavior when we consider our response. There is also a glass ceiling when it comes to marriage. While I believe we should not break up existing homosexual marriages, we should not participate in creating them. The marriage covenant between a man and woman was created, in part, to reflect the relationship between Christ and the church (Eph 5). This should not be co-opted to excuse or normalize immorality.
14: Nuance and Edge Cases
The above outline is by no means meant to be exhaustive or definitive. It is meant to provide a lens, supported by scripture, through which we can view these issues and consider corporate and pastoral responses. It should inform how we view the people that walk through the door from a wide range of backgrounds and how we equip those in our church to be Christ’s ambassadors to those in our community. Every person and circumstance, history and baggage will be different, and any non-nuanced position would be inherently evil. I pray we have many opportunities to talk, think and pray through specific situations that God would bless us with the chance to be a part of. What an honor it would be to be used to reach into broken lives like these with the Gospel of Grace.
15: Action Steps
As we consider practical and philosophical ways of responding to the above, I believe we should start from a position of corporate repentance. If we wish to truly reach out and touch the lives of broken people in need of a Savior who live a life of same sex attraction or gender dysphoria, we need to begin by recognizing that a great deal of harm, emotional and physical, has been inflicted on this group by the Church for generations. There are homeless people living in our area who were kicked out of their homes by parents holding a Bible. There are those who have been subjected to horrific methods that amount to torture under the guise of “Conversion Therapy” from Christian organizations. The only “conversion” we should concern ourselves with is to a regenerate heart. Attempting to change someone’s sexual attraction is very much beside the point. We cannot hope to be a place where such people can hear about Jesus unless they feel safe to enter our doors. We must also fight the tendency to consider sin in this area as something worse than others, even in non-Christians. James 2 says “…For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it….So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty. For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.” As we consider corporate and pastoral responses to the argument above, we must start by removing our own planks and repenting for the historical actions of the Church.
Practical steps that we could consider taking would include: removing the statements from the website about marriage and sexuality, especially directly under our Core Beliefs. Again, this is not meant to hide or equivocate on the truth, but not to set such a barrier before someone even walks through our door. Secondly, we should consider how to address these topics within the church. A Sunday morning sermon is not ideal as it is time limited and a unidirectional conversation. A small group course format would be a consideration. We need to equip parents and family members of adolescents, teens, and adults with language to talk about these things in loving, humble, God-honoring ways. In the longer term, we need to consider how we can make our church a place where people would feel comfortable inviting friends and family who look, think and act differently than we do. We need to find a way of projecting safety and inclusion even in our public facing information. This isn’t a balancing act where we must make it clear early and often that we “love the sinner but hate the sin” as the saying goes. We just need to love the sinner. Dealing with the sin can come later God-willing. A third application point is to be mindful of what we say and what we allow to be said without being checked. Certainly, joking at the expense of those who are dealing with these issues is unacceptable, but we also need to work to avoid getting dragged in to pseudo-political discussions on bathroom issues, sports issues or other divisive concerns that have no bearing on the church.
I recognize that these proposals have the potential to divide the church. There are some who may leave the body over these sorts of changes. I would argue that it is our responsibility to them as well as to the unreached in our community to have those discussions and risk some of them leaving over it. These are not all things we should change overnight but after ample opportunities for discussions and prayer.
16: Conclusion – Mark 2:15-17
At its core, these are not issues of who someone loves, sexual attraction, or even specific sex acts. The core is idolatry and identity. When acceptance by others, self-determination, or physical pleasure become the central force driving our lives then we have become idolators. Though our idols take on different shapes, the struggles in this space are shared by all. Whether you are identified by your profession, your family, or your gender identity, you are not being identified by your Master. Building fences around or within the church because someone sins in a different way than us cannot be allowed. Making the excuse that we are somehow “protecting our children” by shielding them from people in our community who desperately need a Savior will not show our children who Jesus is. Within the church, we cannot be afraid to “speak the truth in love.” We need not and cannot shy away from sin in the church, but we must recognize that the Spirit works in each of our lives. Often this happens over a period of time. We should be prepared to walk alongside our brothers and sisters in this journey for as long as they need.
There is a significant correlation between this community and their relationship with religious groups, and the “tax collectors and sinners” that Jesus sought out in His ministry and their relationship with the religious leaders of the day. Our heart should reflect His. Jesus responded: “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Mark 2:17) If our church was filled with transgender people and gay families that loved Jesus, God would be glorified.”

Hi! First and foremost, thanks for your interest and I apologize in advance for how long this is, I like to be thorough. I want to start this off with some important things regarding playing at my digital table. My games are all inclusive both OOC and IC, that means both the players and the inhabitants of the game world will be varied. There will be cultural and ethnic diversity, there will be people with physical disabilities, there will be LBGTQ+ characters, the game may very well (see: likely) explore mental health, gender identity, and any number of things. My games are a safe place and I take that promise very seriously. I cannot stress this enough; bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated. There won’t be a warning, there won’t be a compromise, you’ll be out of the game, period. If you can’t manage this, then please save everyone some time and just don’t read further.
Now with that said, let’s discuss the beautiful game of D&D and this campaign and how I DM my games. My games are presented less as a static sequence of events and more of threads in the world that can be followed in any order. In a shorter campaign like this one there has to be a little more structure than a longer campaign, but this is not a railroad. Whatever ending we find to this campaign, we will find it together. Whether that’s the traditional fight the BBEG, talk them down, or join their side and plunge the world into chaos, it’s all on the table.
This campaign is set in the homebrew world that I have created and in truth I am using the campaign to explore individual parts of the world and hopefully expand upon the lore, add new NPCs, sure up any shortcomings, etc. Not because I’m publishing an adventure or anything, just because I really enjoy worldbuilding and having player choices affect the world going forward.
I like to incorporate backstories into the plot, I want everyone to have a chance to really feel a part of the story, not just along for the ride. This is also limited in a shorter campaign like this, but we can work together to give you something to identify with in this world. Whether it be directly connected to a figure in your backstory or just incorporating a theme or dynamic that resonates with your character, let’s find a way. If you give me something to work with, I promise I will find a way. This is a collaborative story, let’s create something hauntingly beautiful together.
There will be a session 0 to go over lines and veils, character creation, as well as just getting comfortable with one another. If there is a need for it to go over additional character creation, getting more acquainted with one another, or anything else we can also have a session 0.5. The point is that we are all comfortable when we begin play. Without any further ado, let’s finally get to the campaign details!

Players Needed: I already have some players, looking for 3-4 more.
Ratio: My games tend to lean more towards the RP heavy side of things though I do mix in combat. There are very few potential combat encounters that can't be solved in another way via talking, parlaying, or creativity. The amount of combat is dependent on the group as a whole. I would say in terms of planned potential combat that it will be a 60:40 or even 70:30 lean towards RP.
Scheduling: Bi-Weekly Wednesday 7pm-11pm CST, for 6-12 sessions. There is a chance this goes longer depending on RP, but I believe it will fit into 12 sessions. There’s no hard start date, just when we get the right players we will start scheduling, but it will be within a few weeks.
Software: Discord for voice, Foundry for VTT, D&D Beyond for character creation.

Character Creation:

This campaign can work with players starting at level 3 or level 5. It will be decided by a group vote on which we start at. This allows for the characters to have some level of experience and renown but not be adventurers of legend (yet).
All characters get a free feat. The caveat here is that if you pick a newer background that grants a feat, you don’t get an additional feat.
Play the character you want, don’t worry about party composition. It’s my job as DM to worry about balancing the game, items, and encounters around party composition.
Interparty conflict is fine and makes for good RP, deliberately obtuse characters designed for the sole purpose of being antagonistic to the party are not.
All official content is allowed and most 3^rd party content is as well. If you want to use some homebrew content, send it to me so I can review it to ensure it’s balanced.
We roll for stats. 4d6kh3, drop the full set if under 72 unless you just want to keep them. Rolled in D&D Beyond. I trust my players to not lie about rolls or to try to re-roll 20 times for ideal stats. If I find that I can’t trust you to be honest then we just can’t play together.

Setting:

Welcome to Elysiia, the year is 756 PSC - or Post-Second Cataclysm - and Elysiia is a vibrant planet. Long gone are the days of the Primordials’ dominion over the lands, gone also is the War of Gods, sealed away thousands of years ago. From the ashes of a bygone era has risen a thriving land with many diverse people. From the displaced Feylands of Remcourt - home to fey descendant creatures and prison to incorporeal creatures unfortunate enough to be caught behind it's barrier - to the Flying City of Arigon, floating among the clouds interweaving magic, nature, and technology.
Our story, however, begins in the lands of Morroch, born after the splitting of the worlds by the World Serpent. It is said that Morroch was a point of direct impact of the World’s Serpent’s bite, leaving behind the most diverse array of biomes on Elysiia, much of it incorporated with serrated mountains and rolling hills. There is much to explore here including the northern region belonging primarily to the Stone Giants of Thulkna who call the Crimson Peaks – given their name because of the reddish color of the soil – home. Let us not forget the western seaboard of the Tilltona Coast, cliff-lined coasts with treacherous waters and frequent storms, home of the Storm Giants of the nation of Salleria.
For this story, we explore the Decayed Heights of the western region of Morroch. A brutal and unforgiving arid desert dominated by three powerful tribes: the Jeswye, renown for their connection to fire and abilities as blacksmiths and warriors; the Sandstriders, Lizardfolk who traverse the vast desert with ease, trading, and maintaining the fragile peace; and the Ironhoof Tribe, fierce warriors who thrive in the storm-battered coastal regions of the Decayed Heights.
Recently, the long-standing tension between the Jeswye and the Ironhoof has escalated to the brink of war, threatening the stability of the entire region and crucial trade routes that allow for safe passage through an otherwise inhospitable region. The campaign will begin in the floating bustling trade city of Vespera, located off the coast of the Decayed Heights. Here the characters have received a request from a representative of the Merchant’s Guild to meet to discuss a lucrative opportunity that is for the betterment of the world.
More world info and campaign info will be given before character creation and upon request (I will never turn down an opportunity to talk about lore and worldbuilding).

I work in tech so I like to try to do cool tech shit with my VTT.
I’m a power nerd and love a bit of everything. Anime, comics, rp, tech, ttrpg (obviously), video games, writing, wrestling.
For me D&D is a collaborative storytelling experience. I’m not out to murder your PCs or make things overly difficult for the sake of making you sweat.
If I had to rate my skillset as a DM I’d say I’m very good at improv and storytelling but I don’t have a huge vocal range so I won’t be mesmerizing you with a unique voice for each NPC. I do what I can.
These games are designed for me to experiment with technology, new in-game locales, cultures, etc. and as such some aspects are generated on the go or in the case of technology might experience some technical difficulties.
Rule of cool. Yes the rules have a place, no we won’t be throwing them completely out. But if something is creative and feasible to at least attempt, yeah you can roll for it. If it’s not feasible I won’t even ask for a roll.

For those who are critical of Israel's actions since October 7th:

What would have been an appropriate Israeli response to the attacks?
I don't see many good options for Israel. It seems to me that if you are attacked, you need to fight back for deterrence and to stop attacks from reoccurring - as such, it makes sense to go after Hamas. And in a dense urban environment where terrorists live and operate amidst civilian populations, it seems an unfortunate reality that civilians will be collateral damage, but that's the case for any war.
Is there actually a way Israel could fight Hamas in such an environment without there being civilians killed as collateral damage? Should Israel just not respond militarily because of this?
I hear people say "ceasefire" but Hamas has said it will run the Oct 7 playbook over and over - so that seems like a one sided ceasefire.
I hear protesters talking about "free Palestine," saying it's an open air prison. In practice, what are you advocating if you had a magic wand? It seems to me that the wall, the blockade, proactive operations where you attack plotters, security control, etc are necessary to mitigate the harm Hamas causes, even if it has a human impact on the population. What is the alternative? If Israel were to let up on that and allow free movement into Israel, a right of return, etc, it seems obvious that the next day there would be significant violence against the Israeli population, as evidenced by October 7th.
When you say "From the River to the Sea" what are you advocating? I hear you appeal to international law a lot, but under the UN, Israel has the right to the land between the 1967 borders (not the West Bank settlements, I'd grant). It seems obvious to me that if there were a full right of return and a merging of the populations, the Palestinians would outnumber the Jews, and because of these narratives of colonialism / displacement / etc and the animosity between the two groups that has built over decades, a democratic state with a muslim majority would vote to ethnically cleanse the Jewish population, let alone what would likely be widespread violence.
You can feel bad about 1948, but is the solution to ethnically cleanse 7 million jews from the region? Where will they go? "Go back to Europe" - why would that make sense for the jews of middle eastern ethnicity who were ethnically cleansed from Iraq, Iran, Syria, etc? Do you really think this is a humane and realistic outcome in 2024?
What's the statute of limitations on reversing territorial and sovereign claims? Are we going to relitigate the Vikings, the Arab conquests of Africa / Middle east, the crusades, all the land wars in Europe? Are you willing to give up control of your parent's home in NJ to native americans because of the sins of Custer, etc? If native americans bombed your town to achieve these ends, would you say "I guess we deserve it"? The land of Israel has changed hands a dozen+ times - why are the Palestinians the only group that's been in the region who deserve to have land claims reversed?
If Israel were to do nothing in response to the attacks, it would embolden Hamas to do it over and over again, as it's pledged to do.
Hamas' goal is the complete destruction of the state of Israel - it won't stop until it has the land from the river to the sea. What will some land concessions or trading prisoners or easing a blockade do for Israel if their counter party is not willing to give up violence? Wouldn't giving a reward for these terrorist actions just prove to Palestinians that Hamas' strategy of violence is the right one for achieving political ends, and that the Palestinian Authority's strategy is ineffective?
What was Israel's alternative and what do you advocate them doing from here?

For those who are supportive of Israel's actions since October 7th:

How would you describe the strategy and plan being taken and how does it serve the government's stated goals?
Can we really say the operations have been narrowly focused on defeating Hamas? Why all the destruction of buildings and infrastructure, why restrict sufficient humanitarian aid? Does the civilian population really need to starve? All of that is in service of defeating Hamas?
When you see these stories and videos that seem bad for Israel, are all of them fake or propaganda? What is Israel's justification for what happened to Rajab Hind for example? Where is the evidence of a command center under Al Shifa? Why is Israel not publicly reprimanding soldiers who are posing in dresses of displaced Palestinians, spray painting "Nakba 2023" on walls, and generally abusing power needlessly and posting it to social media? I get Full Metal Jacket vibes from some of these videos. Why isn't the Israeli government more aggressive about punishing settlers who are out of control, attacking aid trucks, attacking people in west bank?
The US was in Iraq and Afghanistan for a few decades and wasn't able to beat an enemy engaging in guerilla warfare in dense urban environments. Some of Hamas is in Qatar. It seems unlikely to me that the objective of defeating Hamas militarily is possible with the current strategy. Are they going to occupy for decades? At what economic cost and human cost (civilians who are collateral damage, soldiers killed in combat)?
These reports on "where's Daddy," AI targeting, journalists killed, shutting down of press, etc don't sound great. I haven't dug into counterarguments closely, but it seems hard to believe there is not an element of truth in any of the stories.
Israel seems to be tone deaf to the PR impact of their actions, and doesn't understand that the war for public opinion is equally important as the military war. How do you explain the extreme statements from Vaturi, Smotrich, Gotliev, Ben Gvir? I consider these statements as harmful to Israel as a terrorist attack in its impact on weakening international support for Israel, which it is dependent on (particularly the US)
It also seems wrong for US actors to shut down Tik Tok, crack down on speech, or falsely accuse everyone of being antisemitic because they disagree with the actions of the Israel government (who isn't even popular in Israel). Maybe some are motivated by antisemitism but it's clear to me that one can disagree with the actions of Israel without the motivation being antisemitism. I find these accusations not only easily disprovable, but they are harmful in that they cheapen the impact of the charge.
It seems that the actions of the Israeli government might create more terrorists in the future, around the world.
What is the plan for the day after? Indefinite Israeli military occupation? How is the population going to live in that region after the war with the entire landscape flattened?
Is this all just a hail mary with no real plan thought out? Gov wanting to show they're "doing something" to an angry domestic political audience?

My friend and I have been friends for the past 3 years. We met during our bachelor studies and immediately hit it off. We connected on a very emotional and deep level. Back then, we were both in a very dark place in our lives. Since then, I have started therapy and I’m in a much better place.
Unfortunately, my friend has not improved much. Most of our conversations now have been me trying to help her with her issues, and I feel it takes me so much energy, and I am not willing to do this anymore. I have also been realising more and more that if I have remove the emotional side of our friendship, we have absolutely nothing in common. She likes to stay at home, doesn’t like trying new things, new foods. She doesn’t like watching movies, nor listening to music, nor dancing. She’s not up for trying new activities like VR. On her bday, I planned a trip to a city nearby, and she was constantly paranoid and scared that people would rob her, so we had to get a taxi everywhere and barely enjoyed our time.
She was also convinced that her stepmother would make her cut contact with her sister based on a hypothetical conversation she thought she would have with her grandparents. I spent the whole train ride trying to convince her that was this would not happen.
I find it impossible to simply hear her saying these things and stay quiet, because I don’t want to reinforce her thoughts. But I also feel like I’m constantly lecturing her, which doesn’t make feel comfortable either. She was seeing a psychologist for a few months, but she stopped because she said it wasn’t helpful. However, she’s no longer trying to find a new one because she says she’s in a better place now. A couple of weeks after this, she was convinced she would fail some courses and decided to postpone the thesis. She told me that this led to extreme anxiety - pulling hair, stomach aches, panic attacks, you name it. To her surprise (not mine), she passed the courses. When I suggested that she really should get help, she told me that school was only a small part of her life, so she didn’t see the point. I could go on and on about it, but the bottom line is that I am tired. I feel like she’s not in a place in which she’s ready for some change, and unfortunately being friends with her is not being a pleasant experience. I also don’t think she’s enjoying constant lectures, which I can completely understand. I’m at point in which I no longer want to be friends with her. I feel like I put in so much effort to change and be a better person not only for myself but for those around me, and I don’t see the same with her. There are also some behaviours that I find difficult to respect. In the past, she had a lot of arguments with her boyfriend because she didn’t want him to go out with his friends. I think she’s also quite codependent, as her boyfriend drives her to university every day before going to his work (which is 40min away) and then picks her up in the evening. This is because she says she cannot bike due getting short of breath and the bus takes too long. Another argument was that she would annoyed(and even angry) every time her boyfriend and his family would talk about his late grandpa, because in her mind he’s already dead. So, as I mentioned, I have a really hard time just listening to such things and not saying anything. My decision is reinforced by the fact that I am moving away in 2 months, and I know for a fact she won’t be putting in the effort to see me. I went to an exchange in another city, and she kept saying she would visit but never did.
This is not to say that I am better than her, but I feel like I am aware of my shortcomings and I am working on improving myself. I can’t say that she’s trying. Or at least it doesn’t seem like that to me.
We both just stopped texting each other, and nothing official was stated. I assume she got tired of getting lectured, and I am unfortunately not interested in hearing only complaints with her, so the conversation just stopped. I went to my psychologist today, and we talked about it. I started thinking whether I should make it official and explain to her how I am feeling, and that I don’t want to be friends anymore. I think I owe that to her. But I don’t know, I think it will be quite painful to her, but at the same time the way things are at the moment, she may not understand what is going on.

TL;DR: roommate leaves me to take care of her dog all the time, I bring it up to her, she gets mad and tries to lock me out. I tell her not to lock me out and she starts physically attacking me. Fam says I shouldn’t press charges.
Initial context: Me (23 M) and my cousin (23 F) decided to be roommates and we both have pets but she’s never home to take care of her dog, I take her dog out more frequently than she does.
So my cousin recently got into a relationship like two months ago and she’s been staying with her partner every night practically, which is not the problem. We made agreements to take each others dogs out if one of us is not at the apartment, but she has been abusing that and essentially leaving me to take her dog out all the time. It became a bigger issue because her dog is not properly trained and is a pit bull so she has the weight to jerk her leash from my grasp. Whenever she’s free, she will run away from me and think I’m playing with her and it’s impossible to chase her down. I’ve had to chase her around our large apartment complex 4 times at this point, the last straw being when she did this before I had to go to work, making me late and almost nearly getting me fired from my job. My dog is a small poodle/bichon frise and he is well trained. So much so that in one instance I had to chase her dog down, my dog sat in the same spot (as I instructed him to) the whole 10 minutes I chased her dog around the complex. Two of my neighbors in three separate instances had to get her dog for me because I eventually just give up and leave her dog outside because I know she will wait at the door and whine.
Well, I got fed up after the fourth instance and I needed to bring this up to my cousin and try to find some solution. So the other day while I’m changing the radiator to my car in the parking lot of the complex, I notice she comes home and says what’s up to me. At this moment I stopped working on my car to let her know that she needs to be more present in her own dogs life because I cannot keep taking care of her dog ALL THE TIME because of her negligence to do it herself. As I’m telling her this, she tries to shift the goal post and bring up that my dog isn’t trained because he pees in the house. The difference here is that I’m always there to clean it up and he pees in his cage (she doesn’t even have a cage for her dog) because one of us isn’t there for a long enough period to clean it up because I work very long hours, but regardless there isn’t a single night that I haven’t been here and slept here. This is my apartment and I don’t have a partners house to go sleep at so I have to come home every day. I will admit I was wrong when I started having a rude tone when I’m telling her that she needs to take accountability for the issue at hand and not divert the issue onto me. It’s at that point she starts getting loud and cussing at me in the parking lot and we essentially are going back n forth outside for a little second before she goes inside. I go back to replacing my radiator and while I’m doing that, I sit and think to myself that I should apologize to her for my tonality and delivery because ultimately, I need a solution to the problem.
So I go upstairs to try to talk to her and I knock on the door three times for her to let me in because the door was locked. She didn’t answer the door and I know she heard me knocking because she didn’t have earbuds in and my dog was barking multiple times because I was knocking the door (he doesn’t bark otherwise because I have a bark collar on him). Luckily I remembered I left my keys outside on my toolbox and I get in the apartment. It’s at this moment I explode and open her rooms door to tell her not to lock me out of my own apartment because she was being petty. She’s yelling at the top of her lungs to tell me to get out of her room. In the midst of this, I thought I dropped my earbud in the doorway of her messy room (clothes and random objects EVERYWHERE on the floor) and I’m repeatedly telling her that I need my earbud and I’ll leave and she’s not listening and just keeps telling me to get out.
It’s at this point it becomes physical and she starts to shove and push me out of the doorway, and I’m telling her just grab my earbud but she starts to escalate the physicality and punch me and grab my hair trying to pull it out. I had not laid a single hand on her up until this point because I don’t hit women or anyone for that matter over a verbal altercation, and I had to wrestle her to the ground to calm her down and to get her to stop attacking me. She then bites both of my arms TWICE to the point that her teeth sink into both arms. I will provide images.
After a minute of this, I push her off of me completely and tell her that I’m going to call the cops for hitting me and she just doesn’t care, I didn’t and I ended up going outside to my car and calling my uncle (her dad) and he basically told me that this is just behavior that’s typical of her. Despite all of this, I try to go upstairs again to talk to her in a calm manner and apologize so we can talk things out because 1. We’re cousins and this is unacceptable behavior, and 2. We literally live together and we can’t live together with this kind of tension. She wasn’t having it, before I could even finish my sentence, she just continually starts screaming at the top of her lungs telling me to get out and that she hates me (mind you, we have neighbors and it’s 11pm at night), so I eventually just leave to go finish working on my car.
You remember when I said I didn’t call the cops? Well, I didn’t need to call the cops, because as I started back working on my car, the cops arrived in the parking lot and they told me the neighbors called because of a noise complaint. So I give them a rundown of the situation in a calm manner outside, and they automatically start to ask me if she has any bruises or marks and I tell them that I’m not sure but I show them the marks I have on my knee, the bite marks on both my arms, and they can clearly see my hair is messed up from her trying to pull my dreads from scalp. So the cops try to go upstairs to talk to her and they’re knocking on the door but she’s not coming to the door, but I let them in and I try to tell her the cops want her side of the situation, but she’s trying to storm past them and literally tells them she’s not talking to them. They were blocking the door but eventually let her leave when they realize that she’s just not going to cooperate with them. When she drives off and leaves with her dog, they then proceed to ask me if I want to press charges and initially I tell them no because I don’t want to ruin her clean record and they inform me that if I changed my mind that I have like 20 days to file a report.
Well I get off work the next day and find she’s home for once with her dog and I’m still wanting to talk things out because she’s family and I have unconditional love for my family, but she tells me multiple times that there’s nothing to talk about and she doesn’t consider me family anymore because I “disrespected” her. Cool.
I’ve asked multiple people in my family if I should press charges and everyone but my mom said no, but I genuinely feel she needs to take accountability for getting physical with me when I didn’t touch her at all prior to defending myself. This is not the first time she’s had issues regulating her emotions and it surely won’t be the last.
Would I ultimately be the asshole if I did press charges on her?

My partner of 14 years is a drug addict, he’s always seemed to or what I feel use me to be his savior, he’s serious anger & jealousy problems also, for the last year, i haven’t been myself what so ever, I’ve had a nervous breakdown, around a year and a half ago, following years of his lies, stealing from my family my dad, my grandma, he’s taken mine and the kids Christmas money, pawned out ten year old sons phone and watched us search the house for it, he goes through my bank account and has taken money out my account for drugs many a time, in became friends with a guy and a few times he’s lent me money and I’ve paid him back nothing massive just small amounts here and there, when my partner went on my bank and seen this he has went ballistic and has called me a whore, a cunt a slut, he’s told me he’s going to hurt this guy, he’s went through all my social media accounts, and wanted to go through my phone yesterday to see if I had spoken to him. Last summer before I was even friends with this guy he kicked me and our children out of our home, around four times all relating to his drug addictions and his stealing etc. So last night after I went to talk to him and he told me to fuck of and called me a cunt, I was in bed and he wanted to talk I told him I was too tired and I said I would speak to him tommorow, he then was calling me a whore and saying I was full of diseases and I asked him many a time to be quiet and I ended up getting up and losing it because I’m tired of him calling me horrible names infront of our children, he said I scratched him and he pushed me a couple of times (this has happened before) he tells me that if I showed him more affection his drug addiction wouldn’t be so bad and that he’s been begging for months for affection from me, I guess I have grown complete numb to the pain I’ve carried for so long regarding this relationship, and I feel as though I have to be always his saviour, I have been trying for a while now working with women’s aid to get me and the children rehoused because it’s becoming too much, he’s still using drugs, but unfortunately I fell he blames me for everything, and if I ever being up anything that hurts me that’s happened in the past, and he’s apologized for needs to be left there, I will never be happy in this relationship aslong as he is still using drugs, he cannot fathom any of this, my poor dad also said he caught him sneaking into his house one night to take his bank card of that which he still denies. Can anyone help me here because this guy blames me for so much and I’m so depressed with it all, my life has been a living hell for so long

The goal is to have a Champions League that includes as many European Nations as possible, while at the same time satisfying the financial needs of big clubs and keeping the established and popular leagues at a national level intact.
It should increase the frequency a top team plays any given other top team, without expanding the schedule too much and without increasing the stress on top players.
If group play, quite boring at times, gets a little boost, it would be appreciated as well.
Setup: 42 Teams participate. 21 spots for Top 4: England 6, Italy 5, Spain 5, Germany 5
21 spots for other countries, determined using a 5y Ranking and qualifying rounds
Each country gets to choose its own Champions League participants independently. If England wants to include the same 6 clubs each year, so be it.
Group play: 2 groups with 21 teams each. 10 dates on the schedule.
A game day in a group consists of 7 tournaments featuring 3 teams. They play each other once for 45 minutes. The home team plays the first and final game. Would look like this:
7.00pm Arsenal London - Ajax Amsterdam 8.15pm Ajax Amsterdam - FC Barcelona 9.30pm Arsenal London - FC Barcelona
In this design, each teams has 3 home tournaments and 6 road dates in Europe.
Additionally the opening tournaments are played overseas (USA, Asia).
Each team would play all other 20 teams in its group once, which is highly desirable. The current proposal with 7 random opponents out of 35 fails spectacularly in that regard.
It would also match up top teams much more frequently than in the past. Each top team would play any given other top European team at least once every 2 years on average.
Roster rule: Each player on a roster can only play in one 45 minute game each day.
Despite having more dates on the schedule, the minutes played by the top players would decrease slightly during group play, while the depth players are utilized more.
Including games with this 45minute design into the soccer schedule optimizes a lot: The clubs get to play the maximum amount of games possible given their roster, getting a full workload out of everybody. It would also increase happiness: Everybody gets to play.
Knockout stage: Standard play over 90mins and 2 legs. The top 12 out of 21 teams in each group qualify. The top 4 get a bye for a Play-In round that matches A5vB12, A6vB11 and so on. There will be no more draws for the knockout rounds. In the past too often an unbalanced draw pooling the top teams on one side resulted from it.
Round of 16 will match the group winner with the most points and the lowest seed left, followed by the the other group winner and so on.
Kickoff Times: The best time to kick off a standard midweek game is between 7 and 8 in the evening, local time. Right now some of the biggest Champions League matches that go to extra time or a shootout finish around midnight, thus completely excluding kids or people that have to work early. Not desirable at all. Even the regular finish to a game is too late. Every game should start at 8pm continental european time at the latest.
Schedule: To make room for the 10 group stage dates, the Nations League (which was uncalled for in the first place) gets cancelled. The qualifying matches for the World Cup and EURO can be spread out more over a 2 year time period. Some, if not most friendlies should be cancelled as well. By including a Champions League week overseas, teams can cancel some of their ineffective preseason marketing tours in USA and Asia as well.
Refereeing/Offside: The calibration of technical aid (VaR) will continue for some time. Offside needs immediate clarity and fixing:
1)The linesman (who has to be a full time and well paid professional wearing a number) always immediately signals for Offside, if he has detected it.
2 )The referee never immediately stops play. Instead he waits for confirmation from the VaR, who in real-time doublechecks it. This check has to take at least 10 seconds.
Finances: The prize money distribution is not sensible as well. A random bounce in a close early knockout match should not potentially be worth €50m. Spreading the money out more even would reduce revenue volatility and make budgeting easier.
Real Madrid: Real is an integral part of European Soccer. It’s current management crew with help from UEFA has cheated soccer for a long time. A new and better Real should be forgiven and included. Real has to be part of the new Champions League right away. Otherwise something would be missing. Real has legions of fans, and is owned by it’s members. These Socios could give up 25% of their economic interest to bring the debt from the Stadium renovation down to a sustainable level.
