2024.05.21 12:42 Individual-Fox-8163 Quick question on 401k to IRA conversion

When I left my previous firm I received my 401k in two parts - in a Rollover IRA and a Roth IRA in Fidelity. How was the split determined between Rollover and Roth? Does it have to do with pre tax and after tax contributions?
Thank you.
Asking based on this
https://www.irs.gov/retirement-plans/rollovers-of-after-tax-contributions-in-retirement-plans
If that is true, isn’t it always a better idea to overfund 401k if $ available? (Assuming you quit the job some day)

2024.05.21 12:22 send_me_jokes_plz I'm under contract! Why am I panicking? How do I make this easier?

My first offer was accepted. I have an amazing loan officer who matched the best rate I could find, my realtor is amazing and pushed everything through very quickly. $265k house, just under 2k square feet, one acre of land, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, appliances included. House is in good shape, clean and well maintained. Septic tank, boiler, water softener, and furnace are all less than 10 years old. Roof will most likely need to be replaced within 5 years. Feels way too good to be true.
I'm going back and forth between pure ecstasy and pure panic. I moved out of my parents house 6 years ago, and haven't moved since, so I'm getting really nervous about the stress of moving. I have 8 months on my lease so I can do it slowly, and will be able to break my lease for pretty cheap once I'm ready, already talked to my landlord about it. Any advice for making moving as easy as possible?
Is there anything I should be aware of during this closing process, or afterwards? Any advice for minimizing costs during it all? 4% down and only $7000 in closing costs, I should have $10k-$15k left over for moving/etc, which is lower than I'd like. I have enough set aside to pay rent for the next 6 months, and my monthly payment with escrow and PMI will be under 30% of my take home pay, after 401k contributions and all that, and I'm a new grad so I'll be looking for better pay once this is all settled. On paper, I think the numbers work out, although I'm not quite sure how much owning a home truly costs. I plan on saving at least 2% of the value each year for repairs/etc, based on what I've seen online.
I feel like all of this worked out too well, that it can't really be this easy. Inspection is later this week, so maybe I'll discover something is totally wrong with the house, but my realtor thinks the sellers just want to retire somewhere nicer as quickly as they can.
Any advice is appreciated, this is terrifying! (:

2024.05.21 12:04 SircerSamoter ETF picks by beginning investor, need help with stock/bond allocation

I'm in my mid thirties, single, and have been in the office work force almost full-time since 2009, when I took my first full-time job after college. So far I'd say I've prioritized other things in life instead of investing and saving, and am a total investing/personal finance rookie, but I have been contributing pretty regularly to the 401Ks I've had with different employers. I feel I am doing OK overall in saving toward retirement through those accounts.
Where I feel quite behind is in accumulating savings that can be used toward one or more big-ticket items in the nearer term, specifically buying a decent house, which I'd like to be able to do in about 10 years' time and currently have almost no liquid savings toward. (I live in one of the most expensive cities in the U.S. now, might move somewhere *slightly* smaller if stars align personally and professionally, but probably won't be going anywhere that has real estate anyone would consider "cheap".) My goal is to have $200K in relatively liquid funds to make a down payment on a house in 10 years' time, which is the main purpose for the investment strategy that I'm posting below. I plan to start with a small investment of about $5K now into something like the fund below (that's the spare cash I have for this right now), which I will monitor for performance and keep contributing to each month afterward. I know, it's a heavy lift to get from here to there.
With this in mind, I'd love everyone's thoughts on the mix of stock and bond ETFs below. I'm targeting 70% stocks and 30% bonds now (see the fine print under "Goal 1" below for more on this) but could be persuaded that a different mix is right for my goal of buying a house (My 401K investments are a little more conservative than this in their allocation, about 60-40.) I've highlighted the ETF in each class below that seems like the best option to me based on the limited data I've gathered, using Fidelity (also the platform that generated the basis for this investment plan via its "ETF Portfolio Builder," and the platform I think I will use to purchase the ETFs). I'm all for your takes on which of these ETFs seem best, any others I'm missing, whole classes of investments that you think I should be considering, etc. For example, do you see an advantage to picking ETFs across sectors as I have below, vs. just setting up an even more automated target-date account?
I could also use everyone's thoughts on the idea of putting money into a stock-heavy mix of investments RIGHT NOW, with the stock market at historic highs (but probably not done climbing), conflicts underway around the world, a crazy presidential election coming up in November, etc. People say not to try to time the market, but... should I wait until the market cools off a bit or takes a dip before jumping in?
There's a lot here, so feel free to respond to bits and pieces as your time allows.
DISCLAIMER: the data I've gathered about these ETFs should be pretty current as of time of posting, but I make no guarantees about its accuracy, since I compiled it into Excel by hand and didn't do much double checking. See the asterisks regarding the definitions of "market return" used.

2024.05.21 11:51 Individual-Fox-8163 Question on rollover IRA forms

All, just wanted to understand how 401k rollovers are reported.
When I left my employer who provided 401K with Fidelity, the funds were transferred to a Rollover IRA. At that time I received Form 5498 for the rollover contribution.
I recently moved the funds from the rollover IRA to my current employers 401k plan. What forms will I receive to report this transfer of funds?
Thanks

2024.05.21 08:31 hotsaucegrl11 Former employer switched 401k providers, can’t access it, any advice?

My former employer was acquired by another company and then recently switched 401k providers to be under the same plan as with the now parent company.
Same situation happened to me where I didn’t realize this till I logged in and saw a balance of $0 and was told by Guideline that the company closed the contract and moved to ADP.
I reached out to former company’s HR but the HR team is not who I used to work with since the acquisition. She told me there’s a black out period for a month. The black out period ended and I still can’t access my account. I tried creating a new ADP account and it still says records can’t be found.
HR gave me the email of the ADP rep they’re working with and I emailed her awaiting a response.
I’m starting to get a little nervous and anxious that my funds are lost or not correctly tied to my info. I’m also feeling skeptical that this rep will respond soon, but I’ll give it a few days.
Any advice on what to do??

2024.05.21 07:05 sly_cheshire Hit $900K on 5/17.

At market close on Friday, 5/17 I hit $900,784 in my 403B, which is my ATH. It's been my goal for over a year to reach this point and here's why. I left my teaching career after 26 years last June, at 55 years old. I first started DCA'ing soon after I started teaching at 29 years old. I didn't know what DCA meant, I didn't really know what a 403B was, but I knew that it reduced my taxes so I thought "Hey, why not?" My private school employer put 5% of my annual salary into my 403B as well, which I thought was pretty cool back in 1997. (It was my first "serious" job so this was all new to me.) I can't remember what funds I chose or how much I invested each month, but I vaguely remember it was around 10% of my salary. As the years went on I slowly increased it to 15% and then up to 20% of my salary. My wife earned more than I did as a graphic designer but she didn't invest much other than what her employer put in for her.
Through the years I would periodically check the 403B and noticed that funds had different returns, so I started choosing the funds that had the greatest returns over inception. (I know, I know...not the smartest strategy, but I didn't know any better. No one taught me anything and I never went online to research.)
Then Covid happened...2020. I was still teaching but I was the technology teacher so I didn't have the crazy Zoom remote teaching schedule that classroom teachers had, which gave me some spare time to research and dork around on the Internet. I started paying more attention to my 403B and noticed that I had more control than I originally thought over my funds. Since we weren't going out during Covid, I upped my percentage to 40% of my paycheck. At the time (after *21* years or so of teaching, I was making about $85K per year (I know...that's below some of your starting salary in other careers!). I had turned 50 and realized I could max out my 403B with an additional $$$$ annually, so I took full advantage. My wife wasn't maxing her 401K and she didn't know how much I was putting in mine.
On 5/30/2021 I had $688K and on 4/3/22 I had $717K. When I left teaching in 6/23 I was around upper 70's/low 80's. After June I was no longer contributing. In September I withdrew about $8K penalty free using Rule of 55. Then I didn't touch it after that. In early 2024 I re-evaluated the funds and reduced the number I was invested in. I have positions in about six funds, listed below, whereas before I had positions in about 10-12.
I've been checking the balance about once a week as it got closer to 900K and so finally on Friday, I reached it! After 27 years! I've never made more than 90K annual salary! I looked back at the returns on the funds I was invested in and most of them were way over 30% annually in the past few years, so I know that really helped me out. (MADVX, JLGMX, VMGMX, VSIAX, RERGX, VINIX) I have different percentages in each.
I'm currently working a temporary position at the school, with much less stress, but plan on getting a full-time job in another field, although I don't know what. This year has been a learning experience.
In addition, my wife and I have about $450K in other accounts - Roth, Traditional, HSA, crypto and 700K equity in our house. I hope we can both fully retire within the next 5-10 years, however our kid has three more years of private high school, then college (50K in a college fund).
I wanted to share this because I feel that it was almost dumb luck that I had the foresight to put money in my 403 27 years ago before I really understood what that meant. It's not timing the market, but time in the market. I only wish that we had started putting money in my wife's 401 much sooner. We're currently maxing hers out. We're both in our 50's and she earns about $110K a year. We live in a VHCOL city but fortunately we were able to buy a house 26 years ago. We added on to our house and re-fied a few times and our current rate is 2.75% with about 12 years left on our mortgage. Not a week goes by that I don't thank the stars that we bought a house when we did.
If you made it this far, thanks for reading and good luck to you all.

2024.05.21 05:37 EveningPlatypus9283 How to safely hold £1.5m for 1 to 3 years

I am a UK and US citizen moving back to the UK. Sale of our house will leave us with about 1.5m cash.
Additionally I'm retiring due to the rest of my net worth (£5m in total, above cash, 401k, equities etc)
Since I'm retiring, I'm being a bit more cautious than I have been. My plan is to hold 3 years spending in something easily accessible, £450k @ £150k per year. And between £700k and £900k for about a year while we look for a house to buy.
Where is the best place to hold this cash that is both protected and can earn something.
I am still in the US right now, I plan to keep my Schwab brokerage account where I currently plan to initially put the cash (although it has a measley 0.45% interest rate)
Any leftover cash I'll funnel back to VOO. Happy to add more context as needed. Thanks!

2024.05.21 05:33 HufftheMagicDragon1 Need advice

This is a long post and I apologize in advance.
I am 30 years old. Wasn’t taught about finances growing up and slowly self educating via this page, the internet, and recently purchased the Boglehead’s guide to investing book.
My employer offers a 401k through fidelity. I really enjoy the UI and learn pathway on the app/website. Under contribution amount it states my employer matches up to 5% of your elegible compensation. When you contribute to the plan, employer matches 100% of the first 3% of your pay, and 50% of the next 2%. Can someone break this down for clarity? I currently contribute 8% pre-tax, if I understand the above then total per paycheck contribution is 13%? The plan automatically enrolled me in State Street Target Retirement 2060 (holding roughly 10% bonds) is this solid or should I change to something different? There are 27 different options to choose from. I was thinking DOXGX, VITSX (2 large cap one value the other blend), BMGKX (mid-cap growth), and VEXRX (small growth). Not sure how I should break the percentage ratios down, but another thing that concerns me is all of these funds have a somewhat high expense ratio.
I have a simple IRA from a previous employer that I believe is also a traditional (pre-tax) account. Assets are 100% stocks, VFIAX and VIGAX. The account no longer lets me make contributions so I need to open up a new IRA either with vanguard or transfer these holdings to an IRA with Fidelity due to simplicity of using one company plus I prefer the fidelity app. Is this something you recommend? Also should I diversify more with different funds, mid and small cap? Currently holdings seem really aggressive (both a large cap), especially considering no bonds.
If you were me, would you keep 401k as traditional pre-tax account and make the new IRA a Roth account? I’ve read that a good strategy to have is a mix of Roth and traditional. Because years after retirement the government will want their money and will force you to withdraw from traditional accounts so they get theirs (tax on said withdrawals). So you use money from traditional accounts first and allow the Roth accounts continued growth.
I also have an HSA account and once I hit the necessary $1000, the plan is to invest excess contributions to a fund. Most likely the target date 2060 for simplicity.
So I’ve made a cardinal sin. Not knowing what to do with excess money and it’s been sitting in my checking account. Once I roll over the simple IRA the plan is to immediately max it out. Then make a second IRA or open a HYSA to invest for expenses less than 10 years down the road (e.g. buy a house). I read that in a Roth IRA you can take the principal amount invested out before retirement at no penalty, is this true?
For emergency fund store equivalent of 3-6 months of bill/expenses in your banks saving account (that’s if it’s a decent return rate?). You want it to be liquid and quickly accessible if needed.
I know this is a lot, but don’t have anyone to ask and want to ensure I’m doing the correct and necessary steps for the long road ahead.
TIA

2024.05.21 05:27 Because_i_can_ Am I crazy turning down a 50/60/???% payraise? FTE to Contract to Hire

BACKGROUND: 30m, I currently work (9 months in) at a relatively smaller company (20ish devs) as a Jr. SWE. I work on an side team that is like 20% IT support of our teams tools troubleshooting with our stakeholders/third party tools and like 80% dev work like fixing minor bugs, adding features the main production teams don't have the time for, and doing upgrades when things get out of date. The job is fully remote and very very low key. Like the least stressful job I've ever had. I'm currently making about 61-63k TC adding bonus and 3% 401k match. I added up my pto + 401k match like I've seen advised to compare to contract to hire and it would be 68k. Seems on the lower end for levels in the nearest big city, but I live in a super LCOL area so its plenty to live on. I just had my first kid this last month and my wife plans on taking a year off of teaching to be a SAHM, but she saved in advance so we are still splitting costs in half until she returns working the next year. She makes 70k, expects to return to the same school.
RECENTLY: I had 2 interviews with a larger company that went rather well, but its through a staffing agency as a W2 contractor. Same tech stack, no other responsibilities outside of developing, and Fully remote as well. 12 month contract originally was 40 dollars an hour (83.2k), but as the interviews went on I've started working the recruiter up to 45 (93.6k), possibly more. I say possibly more because the recruiter very much wants me to say yes to an offer, but I've been very clear that the benefits through the agency are terrible and I wish not to waste anyone's time but they keep trying to up the number to get me to say yes to an offer and said 50 dollars an hour is doable now(weird it keeps changing always negotiate your offers kids). the hiring manager stated to they want to hire me if a "vibe check" interview with the entire team goes well and the recruiter stated they feel confident an offer is coming. I currently pay 450 a month for a great health plan and an meh plan through the agency is 334 a WEEK (17k for the year). Going with their barebones plan is not an option as I need to cover benefits for my family in a reasonable manner for the year my wife takes off. No 401k, no pto, all the standard stuff I'm finding out about contract to hire positions and my parent's think I'm crazy for even entertaining the idea, but they work in government and have lavish benefits and can't see any other way of living lol.
I guess I was just hoping for some discussion of their experiences/or peoples opinion on whether this would be a substantial enough raise to justify the risk. I've heard the advice that CTH is for when you don't already have a foot in the door, and I'm heavily leaning towards no, as I'm kind of risk adverse as a new parent being the only provider for the year and I am confident in my interviewing/technical skills for any future opportunities, but I want to pivot to a full developer position responsibility and the pay that comes with that as soon as possible and I don't know if it would be dumb to turn down jobs in this job market. Thoughts? Am I overestimating the value of benefits?

2024.05.21 05:12 pethebi 34M -- ~500k Net Worth Next Steps?

I'm 34M (single) loving in a HCOL city with about 500k net worth. Annual salary is $163k but total comp is around $220k last year. I grew up poor and low income until 28. I made 20-60k from 2012 through 2018, in 2018 I got a job that made my income jump to 120k, and from 2018 onwards I've made significant jumps in total income every year except this year. My current numbers are as follows:
I'm trying to figure out where to put my money next. I'm currently maxing out my Roth IRA, 401k, and HSAs. I am very invested into expensive, outdoor hobbies (rock climbing, skiing, snowboarding, mountaineering, mountain biking, etc.), which makes my savings rate a bit lower than I'd like. I have about $1k extra per month that I'm trying to figure out where to put it to use. I could either pay off my mortgage early, or put this into a brokerage account. Monthly net income is $7k (excluding annual bonus / selling RSU) and expenses are about $6k. I could probably drop this down to about $5k if I didn't spend so much money on gear, training, and traveling. I probably spend 100-150 days a year doing outdoor sports and I go through gear pretty quickly.
I'm currently planning to put $500 per month into the brokerage, $500 into a savings account to throw throw at my mortgage once a year. After I'm settled in (only ~3 months at this house, I'd like to find a roommate to help some of the costs). My long term goals are to become an AMGA rock guide and do some hobby guiding as a side gig and/or as a retirement job, the pay is absolutely terrible though, so I'd like to be financially independent to do this. Guiding certifications are also pretty expensive, so I'm saving money for this too.
Any other ideas on where I should put my money? Am I better off paying off my mortgage instead of an investment account?

Setting up investment strategy as incoming intern
Hi all,
I’m an incoming anesthesia intern and I’m setting up my investment strategy for the coming decades. I’ve read the WCI book, bogleheads guide to investing, and the four pillars to investing. But I’d love to also get some advice and input from a modern crowd given those books were written a good while ago (and more data points are always better)
Currently my rough approach is going to be the following breakdown using vanguard index funds. I’m pretty confident that I won’t ever touch the money in a bear market at least the first 20 years. So I figure I’m gonna go aggressive when young and by not touching it I know it’ll come back well before I even start looking at retirement:
(Age 27-42) :
70 US stock (40% value, 60% total market)
30 international stock (total international)
(Age 42-48):
55% US stock (40% value market fund, 60% total market fund)
15% International Stock (total world fund)
5% REIT
25% bonds (bond market fund)
(48+):
5% REIT
10% international stock (total international)
50 % US (total US market)
20% Bond (vanguard bond market index)
15% Tips Bonds +3 Bond and -3% stock by year starting with international
In residency I’ll be using a matched 401k through my program and investing ~15% of pay to retirement.
I plan to stay in academics because of my interest in peds/peds cardiac which would entail the state pension plan as an option down the road as well as PSLF for loans.
Financial situation: My fiancé is a lawyer making ~250k at the moment. Shes got about 500k in retirement savings and 500k worth of equity in the apartment we are selling (moving to HCOL area we plan to stay long-term due to family so will rent for a year and buy a permanent home for ~1.2-1.5 million). Currently she puts about 80k a year into investment accounts. She has no interest in finance so has been having an advisor managing it but after we are married and settled in the plan is to handle it ourselves (i.e. me) to save on the fees of ~0.9%.
Goal is to hit 11 million by 62, and draw 300k a year (a number I got from a VERY generous budget I created for mid life and then subtracting the costs of retirement contributions (plan 5500 a month which is 15% of our estimated income), mortgage, and college funds. I don’t plan to ever fully retire but go part time and fade back until it’s not safe for me to work in some capacity.
Not sure if this approach is overly aggressive given our starting point financially and future income.
Sorry for the long post. Any advice from peeps with a few decades of life experience ahead of me is appreciated.
