Help! First figure skating competition

2024.05.21 13:45 MooGlow Help! First figure skating competition

Help! My rink just announced this week that they are doing adult competitions on June 15th (baby figure skaters) and I my coach says we should participate but i need to find a dress or something to wear in time. Any suggestions for finding a dress in this short of time specifically in Australia? I'm freaking out a bit here :_:

2024.05.21 10:13 EducationalQuiet2140 The Tunnels-Part 1

Its taken me nearly 20 years to make sense of something I happened upon for the first time as a teenager.
There are said to be old service tunnels that run from the naval-shipyard to various locations under my hometown, believed to have been originally built around WWI. But In the early 1940s, the main tunnel was opened as a fallout shelter capable of holding 10,000 people . The rest of the tunnels were supposedly closed off when new construction around town occurred in the 1970s. My grandpa worked construction on what at the time was to be the tallest building in town, adorned with a clock at the peak. He like to brag about having "put a hand on nearly every rock in that build'n" or saying "I remember when that was a pile of rubble until we worked on it". He also liked to say "There are still many old places that hold many old secrets for those brave enough to seek them" but I assumed that he meant the bottom of a bottle.
The main streets are a reminder of the infrastructure built in the 1930s and 40s. Many of the businesses on the street were the ground level of a larger office or warehouse buildings. Some were single story buildings, shoehorned in between the larger ones. There is also a Masonic Lodge history with the town. They built the original temple way back then, and then a couple decades later, built another building and moved there. Their presence is clearly noticeable in the architecture all over the town. There are even plenty of houses in town that were built in the same fashion.
It's amazing how small town gossip can be passed down from generation to generation. I first heard about the tunnels as a young boy from a classmate in the second grade. She said that her dad worked on the base(it’s a naval shipyard) and was an important man because they had an escape tunnel under her house. I think I believed her at the time but I never really saw her after around that point. Even at that age I associated her as a Navy brat. I just assumed they moved.
I never really gave it much thought though until I was about 16, in the year 2005. I was a punk teen. I smoked weed and cigarettes as often as I could. I skipped a lot of school, choosing to go get fucked up and skateboard on private property somewhere. I spent a lot of time all over the town and in the most secluded locations. As a skater I'm telling you there were/are some sick spots! A majority of the buildings are that original brick masonry. Stair cases, gaps, banks, ledges, rails. The biggest problem is that skateboarding was a form of vandalism to public property. It was that year after enough people kept getting into trouble that the skaters of our community petitioned city-hall to have a skatepark built. They listened and even let us help design it. It definitely mimics some of the most popular aspects from downtown.
I stumbled upon the first of the tunnel entrances down an alleyway in downtown. The kicker is that, of course it was past midnight and of course I had been drinking and smoking pot. But that's also why I was in the alleys. Anyone hanging out there wasn't looking for any attention. Yes looking back I regret doing all the stupid things I did. I knew the area like the back of my hand but for some reason I was never able to find an entrance while sober. The alley way is particularly remarkable and I had been down it numerous times before. It’s the only one that has a man bridge over the alley connecting two separate buildings. It’s like a hallway fully enclosed with windows, matching the appearance of the buildings. I had just passed under it and to the next building where a smaller dumpster sat. The dumpster had one side pulled away from the building it was butted up against. It was dark but I could see a gaping dark hole behind and underneath the dumpster. I pulled my lighter out to reveal a staircase leading under the building. It was hard to see but I could tell from the edges of the opening that there was supposed to be a metal or wooden cover.
Intrigued I pulled out my old Nokia cellphone. The screen albeit small and dim, it did glow and in the dark-dark was better than nothing. I didn't want to burn myself and wanted to conserve my lighter for other things. I don't know why exactly I felt I needed to but I dropped down behind the dumpster to the stairwell and held my phone up high like a lantern. The stairs went down maybe 15 steps to a flat that went through a doorway on the left. Curiosity out weighed rationality in those days and I made my way down to the flat as quietly as I could. As the last bit of ambient light and noise from the dark quiet alley disappeared, the calm stagnant air in the concrete passage way that acted like an echo chamber was a stark shift in environment.
There was a hallway beyond the doorway that was extremely narrow and not very long. It was only wide enough for one person. It was probably 15 feet in length or so. As I slowly proceeded, the hallway dumped out into a much larger tunnel. I remember thinking "a bus could fit through here!" and it stretched far beyond the dim lights reach of my Nokia. I debated on whether I should just head back and decided now was an appropriate time to spark up a smoke, which didn't mix well with the stale air. Replacing my light source with the flame from my lighter provided enough light to see a panel of switches on the wall next to the smaller tunnel. I flipped one and the main tunnel lit up surprisingly, popping a humming to life. It was at least a football field in length. There were a few other similar little tunnels in various locations along this larger one.
As I was taking in just how long it was I peered from one end to the other and down at the farthest end was what looked like a person. The realization snapped me out of my wonderment. I was now uneasy at the thought that someone was down here just hanging out in the darkness. The more I focused on the figure the more it appeared that it was just standing down there staring at me. I looked the other direction but didn't notice anyone or anything. Taking a drag as I looked back towards the figure who I was now significantly closer to, I stopped in mid step. I hadn't been aware of it but I had been walking towards the figure. That's when everything in my body told me to leave now. And in that very moment the figure began running at me full sprint. There was no time to make sense of how or why I was walking towards the figure or why I was even down here in the first place as I turned running as fast as I could.
When I got to the smaller tunnel I took the opportunity to glance back over my shoulder while rounding the corner. To my absolute terror the figure was right where I was when I started running. I could hear the foot steps echoing off every surface followed with the creepiest snarling. I hit the stairs skipping three or four steps at a time. The light from the night city sky poured over the remaining steps and I nearly forgot the drop I had made getting down there. As I reached for the side of the stair well to pull my self up I could here that thing hit the stairs. With every ounce of adrenaline I heaved myself up and rolled out into the alley. Frantically I picked myself up and rammed into the dumpster closing the gap and began to head to the main street. That night I sprinted the nearly 1.5 miles back home without stopping or looking back.
I wish I could say that I forgot about that night and the tunnels to save myself some sanity in life. If I had only known this was the beginning of something much older and darker than I could have imagined. It took me a few weeks to shake the initial shock of that encounter. Eventually I went back during the day but couldn't even find the dumpster. I put it out of my mind until about six months later when an opportunity came up to visit with my grandpa...

2024.05.20 21:00 Kaisaanwashere Just wondering, care to share your thoughts?

Kind of a lengthy post, So I'm in the park skating for an unhealthy 6 hour personal best, the sun is beginning to set and giving a golden glow, the kids are playing the quad skaters are shuffling to their R&B, the tennis courts are full, a real beautiful evening.
I'm resting on a railing of the skate side of the basketball court regaining my energy and I can basically see everything going on and I'm just looking around some girl talking to a guy on a board, kids sitting by the goalposts, a dad and his kids practicing football, a nice guy I just met called Faroh busting his skates to some old school songs, everyone walking by, I'm trying figure out why the hell my skates go to the side so much instead of backwards.
Now something catches my eye. A muslim sister comes along and sits on a bench , now obviously she's sat down trying to enjoy the amazing day, chilling, watching the skaters skate, got a small bag of shopping so she prob on an errand rum or sumn, I'm like OK nothing interesting to look at, I look away, lowering the gaze and all that plus the sisters awrah wasn't fully covered as she was wearing a sleeveless dress, from what I saw she was very pretty Alahuma barik.
Then comes along some jogger, from the look of it he's visibly non Muslim, sits a bit away from the sister and starts making talk, now we all see what's going on, obviously mans tryna make a move to the sister, the sisters just listening to the guy speaking and says something every now and again , now he's unsuccessful, the sister made the right choice and shut him down, convo lasted no more than maybe 7 mins, man didn't even get to get his phone out to get her number or nothing just made some small talk, now the guy don't seem bad, was friends with the nice guy i mentioned before and in fairness to him, he was respectful about it and jus went back to doing his jog when he got shut down from any further advances, now he's off, the sister also gets up and I'm guessing she's thinking "yeah some guy just tried moving to me,better get this bread and milk back to my mum" or whatever. I go back to doing my thing and the world keeps spinning (and my uncooperative feet still are as well😑😑) .
But I'm just curious, is it weird to see that kinda thing happen to Muslim sisters? Like I feel like you would have some foresight to know whether you can make a move to someone, like literally at the same park some noob girl got approached by this guy and they're getting to talking introducing themsleves and he's helping her find her balance, but these are two fellow skaters both on their own, both learning the ropes of their hobby, both seemingly non muslim . Now this guy knew that he would be able to get to know this fellow noob and not the muslim sister which is why he went and spoke to her and not the sister.
Do non Muslim men think they can get with Muslim women just like non Muslim women? And do Muslim women genuinely indulge them in worse ways than their advances unlike the sister who made the correct choice? I wonder.

2024.05.20 19:36 Calm-Set70 Video workout recommendations?

I find it difficult to stay consistent and motivated without a follow along type video, does anyone know of good ones on YouTube that have similar content to the RR or BWSF? I’m hoping for full body strength increase (though I’d like to build muscle and conditioning too) and would like to work on things like handstand, L-sit, and plyometrics as well. The way my schedule works I would be doing a 5 day split with Tuesday and Thursday as rest days (so ideally the workout would be split I think?). I usually do my own stretching afterwards. I think excluding warm up and stretching, a workout would probably take around an hour. To give you an idea of my current level, I can do push ups, L sit and pistol squats but want to achieve more difficult variations and am still working toward my first pull up. For the past month or so I have been doing Caroline Girvan’s “Strong and Lean” series and adding her 15min pull up video after workouts 1, 3 and 5 (plus her 5 min warm up before each one and stretching after). I definitely noticed progress in both my strength and physique. I’m not sure how to explain, but I think something with more focus/time spent on difficult variations (lower reps of difficult variations rather than high reps of easier variations) could help me better achieve my goals and be less fatigued (plus I do get physical activity in outside of this, as I am a figure skater). My primary focus with working out is to strengthen, not to burn lots of calories.
TLDR want good calisthenics video workouts

2024 Stars on Ice FULL Show Highlights Exclusive Interview with Olympian Keegan Messing
Our daughter has recently become very intrigued with figure skating, she had the opportunity to go to the Stars on Ice in our city and interview one of the skaters, Keegan Messing, and learnt a little more about the sport. We also capture the pre-show Stargazers Q&A with Elvis Stojko and Satoko Miyahara, and highlights from the show.
Being new parents to the sport, does anyone have any tips/recommendations to help a young (7yo) skater get into the sport? We were going to get her signed up with our local skating club this fall.
Thank you all!

2024.05.20 06:49 LongjumpingMethod228 Concept dragon #40 The Speed Skater

Concept dragon #40 The Speed Skater
Speed Skaters are some of the fastest dragons on ice (not saying that many are on ice but you get it), they skate on all kinds of ice from the slipperiest and smooth to the most jagged of ice paths, and they are able to do so because of their most important feature, their talons. The talons of a Speed Skater are extremely sharp and flexible especially their middle and back talon. As they prepare to skate they will bend their middle and back talon inwards towards each other to form a crude skate and go from there. Their other two smaller talons are used for turning and stopping, if they needed to turn right they would bend their right talon and jam it into the ice and vise versa. But if they needed to stop faster they bend their entire foot to grind on the ice. And if that falls in stopping them, they’ll use their wing claws to dig into the ice. Also the one major thing to remember is that when they are skating they don’t plan on stopping so if you are anything else is in their path, they will get sliced in half. Their eggs possess sharp blades that are used for defense and to slice into the ice. Hatchlings are very clumsy when they first get on the ice and are constantly doing that weird move when you lose your balance on ice (if you skate you know what I’m talking about), but as they try and try again they will eventually figure it out. Their hides are incredibly tough and strong so if they crashed into something they would be completely fine. They live in groups of around 10 to 20 and are constantly on the move. They are found in cold habitats with lots of ice and snow and one area they are very common in is Ice Slope Ridge. They are often found trailing behind Royal Iceslider groups, mainly for their ice paths they create as the travel which gives Speed Skaters new ice ways to skate on, but they keep their distance from the Royal Icesliders. Instead for flames they shoot out plumes of powdery snow at high speeds, this usually temporarily blinds an opponent so that they can get a quick getaway.

2024.05.20 04:02 SupBenedick Should Tonya Harding hire another hitman to destroy Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum’s legs?

Obviously the Knicks losing to Tyrese Halibumton wasn’t expected. But now we have to watch the hopeless Pacers face off with the Celtics. The Celtics are going to be heavy favorites, and are only one series away from the finals. Us jerkers don’t want either Boston or Indiana in the finals, but we have to pick one. And I think most of us want the Celtics to lose.
My idea is to have Tonya Harding hire hitmen to destroy the legs of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. Brown is the best player on the Celtics. Tatum is supposed to be the best player but is really just there for moral support (like Bronny James). Taking these 2 out would destroy the Celtics from within and force a massive league collapse. This also clears the way for a classy champion in either Luka or Jokic.
Tonya Harding is a former figure skater who hired hitmen to destroy her main opponent, Nancy Kerrigan’s, legs in 1994. Certainly, 30 years later, she can make a comeback and save the NBA once and for all.

2024.05.20 01:12 MrAwesome Steam Deck Mega FAQ. Start here before you ask!

TL;DR

Check ProtonDB to see if the game will work on the Deck. Yes, the LCD is fine but also yes, the OLED is better. Read below for links to game suggestions. Don't go overboard with accessories or tweaking until you need it. Hold the STEAM button for a few seconds to see the available keyboard shortcuts. And most of all, please search the subreddit first before you ask your question!

Posting In SteamDeck

"HELP I AM HAVING AN ERROR WHAT DO I DO?"
Search the subreddit for the text of the error. Search Google for the text of the error + "steam deck". Chances are, someone else has had the exact same error.
"Check out this cool picture I took of my Deck! Isn't this neat?"
We do love a nice Deck pic around here!
...but if your crotch is visible or you're clearly playing on the Deck instead of playing with your young child, you're probably going to get hazed a little.

Purchasing / Accessories

"Should I buy a Steam Deck?"
Do you have the money? Yes. We're most likely going to tell you yes. It's a Steam Deck subreddit. We love this thing.
"Should I buy a Steam Deck, or a ROG DoodooPeepee, or a Lenovo PoopooDookie?"
Look where you are. We're going to tell you to get the Deck, and we're going to be right. It's not perfect, it's a little janky, but it's absolutely amazing.
"Should I get the OLED or LCD?"
It depends. If money is an issue, or someone is offering you one at a huge discount, the LCD is perfectly fine! It's still an amazing system, and any FOMO is misplaced unless you really need better battery life.
The OLED is strictly better (better screen, better battery life, etc), but the overall experience is not that far off and they can run all of the same games at ~effectively the same fps.
(Side note: if you plan to play mostly docked, the LCD is a great choice! The only two things you'd miss out on are wake over bluetooth and faster WiFi.)
"Should I get the official Dock?"
NO. Well, probably not. For many people, it has a horrible bug with HDMI that will haunt your dreams. It doesn't affect everyone, but it's very common. There are plenty of alternate docks that work perfectly and are cheaper, just Google "steam deck docks" and pick one. The JSAUX one is spoken of highly, and I can attest that my old UGREEN USB-C hub works perfectly as a dock. Check out this thread for recommendations.
Note: make sure that the dock you choose does not block the intake fan on the back of the Deck!
"What accessories should I get?"
Overall... You don't need much, the Deck is great the way it is.
If you plan to play on a TV, definitely get a nice dock/hub.
A standard power bank with at least 45w charging is great for long plane/train rides.
A "ground loop isolator" is nice for getting rid of the loud buzz on wired headphones when charging.
Beyond that, just search the subreddit for "accessories" and you'll get tons of answers!
"What controller should I get?"
Do you want gyro?
If not, just any old controller is fine. XBox controllers seem affordable and high quality these days, and are well-supported.
If so, then check out DualShock 4, DualSense, 8BitDo Pro 2, and Switch Pro.
If you want back paddles and gyro, you'll want to check out the 8BitDo Pro 2 and the (pricey but amazing) DualSense Edge.
"What games should I buy?"
Search the subreddit! This is probably the most-asked question we get here, and there are literally thousands of threads full of great answers.
"I have a long flight coming up, what games should I buy?"
Search the subreddit! (Balatro.)
"What games are good for keeping battery use low?"
Search the subreddit! (Balatro. And/or streaming via Moonlight or Remote Play.)
"What games are good for playing in bed that don't spin the fan too loudly and wake up my partner?"
Search the subreddit! (Balatro. And/or streaming via Moonlight or Remote Play.)
"I'm on a really tight budget, what games can I buy for the deck?"
Search the subreddit! (Holocure. It's free.)
"I just bought my Deck, how long will it take to arrive?"
It depends, but 1-2 weeks is a safe bet.

Tweaking / Compatibility

"What should I tweak before I start playing games?"
Nothing. Don't change things until you're clear why you want to change it.
"Will run on the Deck?"
Check out ProtonDB.
"How can I get better performance on ?"
Check out ProtonDB.
Google it! "steam deck performance " will get you so many great threads and spreadsheets. If it runs, someone has tweaked it.
"Should I overclock my Deck? Should I enable PeePeePooPoo Ultra Performance Utils?"
No.
"How can I run my games from Epic/GOG/Ubisoft/EA?"
If you want a one-size-fits-all approach, you can try NonSteamLaunchers, which will install the things I mention below.
The quickest answer: do a quick Google/ProtonDB search. The answer is likely going to be Lutris or Heroic Launcher. Once you have the game set up there, both launchers have an "Add to Steam" option that should work perfectly. (You can also add the launcher itself to Steam for convenience, but you're going to want to launch each individual game from Steam if you want to use Steam Input correctly.)
Rough guide:
  • Ubisoft/EA/Humble: Install Lutris from the software center in Desktop mode
  • GOG/Epic/Amazon Prime: Install Heroic Launcher from the software center in Desktop mode (For Epic, you can also try out Junk Store)
"How can I use the Nintendo button layout?"
You, as a supreme ultrachad of taste and elegance, should simply go to the main menu, look under Controller, and select "Use Nintendo Button Layout".
(Note: this should work out of the box for essentially all games using Steam Input, and will swap the button glyphs in-game for most games. The only issue you'll have is that the Steam Deck UI will still show the actual physical button glyphs, instead of the superior-layout buttons that you expect (so X/Y and A/B will be backwards from what you want).)
"Can I swap the physical buttons to match the superior Nintendo layout stored in my galaxy-sized brain?"
Unfortunately not, or at least not without getting custom buttons. The buttons on the deck are differently-shaped, and would feel very weird out of position.

Tips & Tricks

"How do I change the brightness?"
The [...] button + up/down on the left joystick.
"How do I bring up the on-screen keyboard?"
STEAM + X.
(Or, for those giga-brained among you using the Nintendo layout, STEAM + Y.)
Note: the on-screen keyboard won't work in Desktop Mode if Steam isn't running in the background!
"The left trackpad scrolling doesn't work right in Desktop Mode!"
It's a scroll wheel. Rub counterclockwise to scroll up, clockwise for down.
"That's dumb. How do I change the controls for Desktop Mode?"
Open up Steam, then Settings > Controller > Desktop Configuration.
"I want to play Red Dead Redemption 2 or on a plane!"
LAUNCH THE GAME BEFORE YOU GET ON THAT PLANE, MY FRIEND. Make sure you can get all the way to the game itself. Many games require you to be connected to the internet either the first time the game launches, or the first time you've launched the game in a while.
"I hate trying to aim / use the mouse with the joysticks/pads!"
USE GYRO. USE GYRO. USE GYRO.
Go into the controller settings for your game, turn on gyro "As Mouse", and set it to activate on "Right Stick Touch" and/or "Right Pad Touch". Your console gaming life will never be the same.
"How can I type faster on the on-screen keyboard?"
Try using the trackpads. The left pad controls the left half of the keyboard, the right pad controls the right half. Takes some getting used to, but it's decently quick and doesn't require taking your hands off the sides to type on-screen.
"How can I switch the controls to gamepad mode (or back) in Desktop Mode?"
Hold the menu [...] button!
"I want custom menus, more button options, perfectly-tweaked joystick/gyro controls, etc."
Go to the controller settings for your game and look through community layouts!
If that's not good enough, customize one of them or make your own. Steam Input is ridiculously flexible. Check out this guide if you want a truly ridiculous amount of information about what's possible!
(My favorite thing to do is to create an Action Layer called "util", set one of the back paddles to "Hold Action Layer - util", and then rebind a bunch of buttons in that Action Layer to essentially 2x the number of buttons on the Deck. Just hold down the paddle, press whatever buttons you need, and let go when you're done.)
"I want to open up my Deck to replace the . Anything I should know?"
TAKE OUT THE SD CARD FIRST.

Troubleshooting

"It's hanging forever after a reboot, what do I do?"
Either connect it to Ethernet with the dock, get near a known wifi network (doesn't always work), or turn it off and then hold the [...] button while you press the power button and then select the second option in the list that appears on the screen.
"After an update, I'm seeing an error that says 'Something went wrong while displaying this content'!"
Decky, or one of your Decky plugins is not updated yet and is broken. If you can open Decky, try to update your plugins or disable them one-by-one to figure out which one is broken. If you can't open it, go to desktop mode and update/uninstall Decky by running the installer again. If you're still struggling, search the subreddit for "decky broken" and see what other people have done to fix it.
This can also happen if you're using the Beta channel. I believe Decky has their own beta/prerelease channel that makes this happen less often.
"When streaming on my OLED deck with Moonlight or Steam Remote Play, I randomly get periods of really intense lag!"
It's a long-running networking bug that has inexplicably never been fixed. Just restart Moonlight, or turn wifi off and on again.
"My wifi is slow on the Deck!"
Check that you're using the 5Ghz band, if possible.
"Game downloads/updates are really slow!"
Go to "Downloads" in the main settings menu and make sure "Download region" is near you.
If that doesn't work, you can try the method from this thread (tweaking http settings) and this thread (setting an artificial very high download limit), but I can't vouch for either personally.
"I can't connect my Deck to my TV via HDMI with the official dock, it just shows a black screen and doesn't connect!"
You will need to unplug every cord except HDMI from the dock, connect to the TV, and then plug everything else back in. Every single time. I'm so sorry. You may want to just get a better dock. They still haven't fixed this and I don't think anyone knows why.
This comment has some steps you can try from Steam Support, but I wouldn't get your hopes up. Please comment if they work for you!
"Oh God my Deck shows an error and doesn't boot, what do I do?"
Search the error, but the likely answer will be to do a full system recovery: https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/1B71-EDF2-EB6D-2BB3
That's it! Hope it helped. It's a pretty safe bet that if your question wasn't covered here and doesn't show up in search, we're going to be very happy to help you figure it out!

Buying second hand skates
Hi everyone , So I am pretty new here :) So here’s the thing I am a female figure skater and recently been doing doubles and quitted the team and went into self taught freestyle skater world So currently I have an edea overture which I been using for 2.5 years and istg they have the best support ever ! If didn’t do/work on doubles I would’ve stayed with them now my blades are Jackson mirage which ofc requires a change cause they are for a real beginner great service tho! But I ALWAYS had struggled with finding the rocker it’s so hard in them Now I don’t really have much time left in couple of months I am gonna be leaving for college so idk how much time I’ll have So I was looking for a new skates under a budget buying second hand this time now great prices this girl was selling an edea chourus + with mk professional and I was think that’s prefect! But I couldn’t take it cause the boot was pretty broken for the inside Now another women had offered me but now it’s a black boot which is really upsetting me I hope there’s a way to paint or change color 😅 And the blades are gold seal John Wilson Opinions would be really nice to have about them two :) Boot is a risport prime Now I need an advice since I think they are broken in the side on the right boot near the laces I am just asking if it’s really worth it and if I can skate on them even tho they are pretty broken is it smth minor ? Advices will be welcomed Have an absolutely amazing day !

2024.05.19 03:25 feistyhorses Nerve pain in 4th toes

Hi! I’ve been dealing with what I assume is nerve pain in my right foot 4th toe after I broke it in 2016. I’ve had X-rays done on that foot and my GP said “well it’s not bone related so that’s weird that you have pain” and pretty much left it at that. It comes and goes, is particularly strong if the toe box of any given shoe is too tight, and sometimes it cramps up so it kind of sticks out on its own, away from the other toes, up and towards my pinky toe, if that makes any sense.
Fast forward to a couple weeks ago and I’m having very similar pain in my left foot, also 4th toe. It doesn’t do the thing where it sticks out and cramps up, but instead it hurts after wearing closed-toed shoes of any kind and also when I first wake up, it will hurt to put weight on it. But I can usually walk it off, especially if I wear open-toed shoes.
I’m very active, run 20-30 miles/week generally, though I haven’t been because of this new left toe pain. I haven’t been to the doctor yet bc I’m expecting her to just say “oh that’s weird” and not much else again. She’s never offered to refer me to a specialist.
I’ve generally been told to wear shoes w/extra arch support because I overpronate pretty severely, but I’ve noticed that the least painful pair of shoes after sandals is a pair of street Nikes with very little heel to toe drop.
I grew up as a competitive figure skater (10+ years) and I’m wondering if all those years smooshing my toes is coming back to haunt me somehow. I’m not really sure what to do. I don’t want surgery if at all possible.
What I’m looking for: home PT-type exercises, shoe recommendations, any other recommendations (topical stuff? Diet? I’m willing to try almost anything at this point) and also what the heck I should ask my doctor when I inevitably go back to see her because the pain is seriously interfering with my lifestyle. Thanks!

2024.05.18 23:18 Elephants_and_rocks Turn out exercises?

Hi I’m a figure skater not a ballerina, so I apologise in advance if I say something stupid! One of the tricks I want to learn requires turnout and I have no idea how to accomplish it. I’ve tried practicing off ice but I very much seem to be forcing it with my feet and I’ve heard that’s potentially dangerous.
So how do you practice/improve turnout? I’ve tried looking it up but everything I could find involved descriptions that I outright didn’t understand. I’ve heard you’re supposed to turn from your thigh rather than your feet but I don’t know what that looks like or means. I have no equipment (other than a banister that I guess I could use as a barre). What sort of exercises should I try, how do you turn from your thighs?
Thanks!

2024.05.18 18:30 Hour_Television_6273 Need help. Sorry if this doesn't apply to rules.

Need help. Figured yall might know some of the little hidden gems for a New rider.
Biggest issue is size. Im 6ft 7in and 220lbs and most of my height is in my legs. Also have really long arms.
I race cars for a living so im comfortable going fast and know my way around a track on four wheels, and im ready to venture on to two wheels as well.
Would like to get a crotch rocket style bike or a dual sport thats leaning more towards sport then off road. Budget is 7500 to 10k as this will really be more of a hobby. I don't care if its an old bike either. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

2024.05.18 14:44 auxerliaaaa Flat footed- Always on inner edge

I’m a beginner figure skater who owns a pair of edeas. My problem is that everytime I skate, my feet are always leaning inward. I’m currently learning crossovers and everytime i try to crossover, my foot wobbles inward and it makes my ankles hurt badly.
I’ve bought orthopedic insoles that didnt work, I’ve tried taping tissue to my foot’s arch to hopefully help my foot straighten and only caused major pain (however did help a little), I’ve tried having thick socks, but nothing worked.
I’ve been practicing my arch and keeping my foot straight off-ice but everytime I put my skates on, my foot relaxes inside the boot and leans inward again.
I’ve tried so hard to get rid of the habit of skating on inner edge but no matter what I do, i can’t stop it and it’s been holding me back from any kind of progression.

2024.05.18 01:29 RamonaMaybe Help femme-ing up my boymode (newly-ish out MtF)

I'm either newly out or newly out again (first egg crack was like six years ago, life got in the way of doing anything about it till now), and I'd like to add some more femme flare to my boymode outfits. Not really ready for a complete wardrobe overhaul, just looking to infuse a bit more gender joy while maintaining some "plausible deniability" while I'm still early(ish) in the whole process
With the weather getting warmer, I'm happy to bust out some shorts. I've been described as dressing like a lesbian already, and my aesthetic is a lot of pastels and jewel tones, and especially in warmer weather, something like athleisure soft butch. My current outfit, for instance, is a dusty magenta tank top under an oversized heatger red Duluth shirt, pink shorts, and a pair of black Tom's flats.
It's also worth noting that I'm pretty big--about 6'4", currently sitting around 300, and starting to realize just how much height dysphoria I've had my whole life
I'm still trying to figure out what kind of outfits and styles I'd like to try first, so any good recommendations are appreciated
One thing I'd like to try is a nice pair of harem pants--not so much the ones with the super low-crotch, but the kind that's sort of loose and flowing and open around a capri length. If anyone has good recommendations, particularly something that'll fit such a tall frame, I'd appreciate it
