I own a domain johndoe.com that I use with my Microsoft 365 subscription. I want to continue to use the Microsoft Outlook desktop client, Android app and webmail to send and receive email.
I would also like to use addy.io for aliases, mostly with what I guess you call a shared domain (i.e., [foobar@anonaddy.io](mailto:foobar@anonaddy.io)) or what you call a standard alias ([foobar@johndoe.anonaddy.io](mailto:foobar@johndoe.anonaddy.io)), but I occasionally run into difficulty with some sites that prohibit alias services (using SimpleLogin with random "shared domain" emails). It's because of this latter issue that I'm considering a BYO domain with addy.io.
How can I leverage addy.io to work with johndoe.com but still be able to send and receive email via M365 as [john.doe@johndoe.com](mailto:john.doe@johndoe.com)? I've seen references to setting up a subdomain, such as mail.johndoe.com, for addy.io aliases. Will M365 tolerate or even know of this subdomain? If I respond to a message forwarded by an addy.io alias, will the From: headers show the alias ([fubar@mail.johndoe.com](mailto:fubar@mail.johndoe.com)) or my normal mail ([john.doe@johndoe.com](mailto:john.doe@johndoe.com))?

Darkness was all Ilicia saw; naturally, she was holding her breath, but then she remembered what Will had said. “I just need to breathe.” She thought and took a hesitant breath, finding she was able to breathe just fine in the inky blackness which surrounded her. She took deep breaths and focused on the fact she could breathe, and Will had assured her that everything would be okay.
After what seemed like an eternity, she felt the sand shift above her, and suddenly her head was free of the sand, and dim light hit her eyes, blinding her for a moment. When she finally adjusted, she saw that the rolling hills of the kingdom were long gone, and the deep forest and towering trees of the Fae Woods now surrounded her.
What also surrounded her were the faces of thirty orcs, all of whom held strange crossbows leveled at her. All around Ilica, the Drethi, horses, and carts emerged from the sand. With each appearance, the orcs around her seemed to relax. Finally, Will, Yilan, and Got’Ro emerged from the sand, and relief seemed to wash over the faces of the orcs surrounding the Elfstones.
Will stepped out of the Elfstones, and the facade of magic rolled back over him. Ilicia walked quickly after him, not wanting to be too far from him. When she finally stood next to Will once more, she breathed easier.
“I remembered to breathe. Will, what the hell was that? How did we transport here? Why does no one else use the Elfstones to travel?” Ilicia said questions pouring from her mouth as fast as her mind could formulate them.
“Hold on there, Ilicia,” Will said, sounding drained, “I will answer all of your questions, but I need some food first.” Ilicia looked at Will and saw the exhaustion in his eyes.
“Are you okay?” Ilicia asked.
Will nodded, leading her to follow after Yilan and Got’Ro. As they walked, Will returned the salutes of many Orcs, Drethi, and Elves that crossed their path. “Yes, I will be fine after I eat. Having the restrictions I have placed on myself ripped away and then reinstated is jarring, to say the least.”
This statement only raised more questions for Ilicia, and she turned to look at the Elfstones to see Sir Balefor being helped out by one of the Drethi. “Are you alright, Sir Balefor?” She asked as the pair followed behind them.
The Drethi spoke while a very pale Sir Balefore nodded. “We had to revive him. I think he tried to hold his breath the whole time we were under. The sands of Belok kept him alive, but he was out cold when we emerged.”
Ilicia nodded sympathetically to Sir Balefor and then turned to face the roar of a crowd. Got’Ro had led them all to a large building directly opposite the Elfstones. Up on the front porch of the building, Got’Ro had raised his hands and bellowed out a call. “Kem Na Lok Og!”
The response by the crowd was a roar of approval. It sent shivers down Ilicia’s spine. She knew the Gob’Ran was generally thought to be made up of fanatics, but this was the first time she had seen it in person.
Ilicia also looked across the crowd to see Will had not been lying when he said that most humans were prudish by comparison. Several orcish women stood in hide pants with little more than a strip of leather around their chests. There were also elvish men and women who had a few precariously placed leaves protecting them from the elements.
Yilan stepped back next to Ilicia as Will stepped up next to Got’Ro. Yilan quietly translated for Ilicia as Got’Ro continued speaking.
Got’Ro looked across the crowd. “It is good to hear the roar of the clans once more. Months spent in travel, and we return with guests. First Will is here.”
The crowd erupted, and Ilicia’s ears turned red at how loudly the women of all races cheered at Will’s wave to the crowd. Got’Ro continued, “We also have two guests from our allies in the Kolt Kingdom, the princess, Ilicia Ter Koltshelg, and Sir Balefor, Captain of the Royal guards. While they are here, Sir Balefor will study combat, and Princess Ilicia is Maleq’Na Garo.”
Ilicia looked at Yilan, who was giggling quietly. Ilicia also saw Will shake his head in embarrassment at his grandfather. “What did he say?” Ilicia asked.
Yilan smiled at Ilicia, “Here in the Gob’Ran, the safest you can be is to be part of our family, so he named you Maleq’Na Garo. Maleq’Na means soon to be, and Garo means taken or acquired, and it also has a, shall we say, dirty meaning. So essentially, he just declared you will soon be taken by Will, in every way it implies.”
Ilicia turned bright red and looked out over the crowd once more. It shocked her how many female faces shone toward her with sheer anger on them. Ilicia muttered to herself, “They don’t look like they want to be friends.”
“No, they don’t, but I also don’t think they intend to harm you. A few of them probably intend on trying to bed you along with Will, and the rest most likely intend on becoming a second wife or concubine.” Yilan said all this with a thoughtful look on her face as her eyes washed over the crowd. Her eyes finally settled on an orc woman who was wearing form-fitting leather which left very little to the imagination. The look on her face also left little to the imagination as she glared daggers at Ilicia, “Now she might actually try something. She was Will’s Ogdeshi, and she had it in her mind she was to be his wife, or at least the first of them.”
Ilicia nodded glumly. She realized that both Yilan and Got’Ro were trying to push them together, and she wanted it to happen, but she wished it was more organic in its happening. Ilicia shook her head as something Yilan had said registered with her, “Wait, what? First wife?”
Yilan, who had given up on translating Got’Ro’s speech, turned and looked at Ilicia, “Oh, yes, another thing humans are strange about. You may have as many husbands or wives as you wish in the Gob’Ron, though it tends to be strong men with multiple wives, though there are a few women with several husbands. When people started to realize just how powerful and capable Will really was, leaders of the Clans began to parade their daughters in front of him, hoping he would take an interest.”
Ilicia thought of this for a moment, processing the idea of potentially having more than one husband or of having to share her husband with another woman. Ilicia shook her head, “Well, here is to hoping that she does not succeed.”
Got’Ro finished speaking and turned to enter the large building they were all standing in front of. As they finished entering, two Drethi shut the doors behind them. “Now,” Got’Ro said, “let us go to bed, and in the morning, we can finalize plans for the coming days.”
One of the Drethi was still helping Sir Balefor, who looked to have regained most of his color, and Yolanda and Got’Ro disappeared up the stairs leaving Ilicia and Will alone in the entryway.
“Come on, let’s eat, then I’ll answer all the questions you have.” Will said and led Ilicia down a flight of stairs to a kitchen with a Drethi cleaning some pots and pans.
Will made them both food, and they ate it at a small table set in an alcove at the back of the kitchen. After Will had finished eating, he sighed. Sitting back and wiping his mouth, he finally spoke, “Okay, so what questions do you have?”
“So what happened with the Elfstones? Please explain in detail.” Ilicia said, bursting with other questions, but she could still see the exhaustion in Will’s eyes.
Will took a breath and then began speaking, “The Elfstones are, well, to be quite honest, the Elfstones are a focusing of power unlike any other. The stones and white rings inside them are a product of Gilsheribrum bone and blood magic. And inside the ring of stones, that black sand is what is known as the sands of Belok. Belok was a magical beast that volunteered to be a part of the Elfstones.”
Will glanced over at Ilicia and saw confusion. “Put simply, the Elfstones, All of the Elfstones ever assembled, are all part of a massive living organism that feeds off of magical sources, AKA me when we traveled here.”
Ilicia’s eyes widened, “So then when you spoke of limitations being stripped away and reapplied. You were actively using the magic you sealed?”
“Yes,” Will said, “while inside the Elfstones, magical power that is not part of the operation of the Elfstones is sealed, and magic that is a part of their operation is unsealed. If you have as much magic as I do, it becomes an ordeal unto itself to seal and unseal it.”
Ilicia nodded, watching as Will leaned forward to take a drink of water. Ilicia asked a few more questions about the Elfstones before moving on to what Got’Ro had said. “So, Will, your grandmother explained what maleq’na garo means.”
Wills’ face went bright red, making Ilicia smile, “I am sorry he said that, but it does provide you a level of protection. If people believe you are a potential wife, then if something happens which prevents me from doing my job as the Princess’s Man, many in the clans will step forward to protect you if you need it.”
Ilicia nodded, “I understand. I think that is all I want to know for the night.”
Will stood and led her to a set of conjoined rooms on the top floor of the building. After making sure that the rooms were clear of threats, Will bid Ilicia farewell and retired to his own room. Ilicia lay awake for a short while, wondering what other events awaited her on the marrow.

I have a legacy pay-as-you-go account with T-Mobile. This is the one where there is no monthly charge and I only need to top it up every year to avoid deactivation.
I purchased some refill cards a couple of days ago to add to my balance. Went to prepaid.t-mobile.com and navigated to "Make a payment"->"Redeem a refill card". Added the card number and hit "Redeem". It took the card and reported no errors. I then went back to the main account page to see the balance. No change. The balance is sitting at the same number as when I first logged in. I also received no emails and no texts confirming the activity despite the fact that the confirmation page told me to expect an email. There wasn't anything in the spam/junk email folder either.
So, I decide to give it a couple of minutes thinking that maybe it just takes while, but still no change in the balance. What's worse, I start seeing random web site errors as I navigate the pages. I then try to check the balance from my phone by dialing #BAL# only to be greeted with a "SYSTEM UNAVAILABLE" message.
Finally, I notice an "Activity log" link off of the main page. Clicking it at first produces empty pages or just errors. After a dozen tries or so, it finally loads. I am able to see "Account refilled" and "Transaction confirmed" entries for my reload activity. But the main page still does not show any changes in my account balance. I then logout and login again. The balance is now showing up properly.
It's been two days now since I reloaded. I still have not received any confirmations and dialing #BAL# still produces an error. If you have a legacy prepaid account with T-Mobile, is this also your experience when reloading? Or is their web site FUBAR and that's just how it works for all prepaid accounts?

I've been running Google App/Google Apps for Business/Google Apps for Work/G Suite/Workspace for 10+ years across a number of entities. Despite Google's general refusal to take my money (Workspace v. Nest), I have generally enjoyed the experience, as have my team members.
Over the last few months we've been pushing out GCPW to our small team. Initially it worked fairly well, but over time there have been some issues. The lack of documentation, implementation guides and published best practices was concerning, but is also kind of prime Google, so I went with it. However, it has become glaringly apparent that the day-to-day deployment and management of the tool is not being properly considered. Here are some examples of questions/issues we've faced.
1) What's the best way to deploy GCPW/WDM to user machines?
Google tells you how to install GCPW, but it doesn't tell you how to deploy it. i.e. How should I provision a new machine? Ignore zero touch, I'll do it manually, but even that isn't described.
I've been installing chrome and then GCPW on new machines before anything else. Then log in as myself and complete the rest of the configurations, software installation, registry changes to remove auto-install of a bunch of windows apps, etc... Lastly I hand/ship the machine to the employee who logs in and away they go.
However, that means in the device console there are two devices. One for me, managed by GCPW, DFS* and EDS, and one for the employee managed by DFS and GCPW, but not EDS. The result so far has been is that a bunch of the status updates that EDS reports, such as device encryption status, aren't reported as my user isn't logged in. Similarly, GCPW isn't updating, I assume for the same reason. In troubleshooting a machine today I found that it was still running v.87, which was what was out when I gave her the laptop in December.
What does a properly configured user look like? Am I doing it the right way? No idea. But there's nowhere to find an answer to that either.
*Have an intern do a find and replace of "Drive File Stream" with "Drive for Desktop" in the admin tool
2) Multi-user?
Now, the fun part. GCPW/WDM apparently isn't designed to have more than one user enrolled in WDM at once. Would one find that on the prepare to install GCPW page? Perhaps any of the WDM pages? FAQs? No. You would find that at the bottom of the Troubleshooting GCPW page. Certainly helpful to find after one has deployed machines across the country.
So the answer to #1 becomes more fun, because you're seemingly borked if anyone except the end user logs into to GCPW/WDM first. Want to test before you deploy? That's not the Google way.
3) EV, useful for more than electing Presidents?
When I reached out to support on the device status reporting I was informed that in order to get up to date status info I needed to push out endpoint verification to all my users and pointed at a page about that. Ok, I can do that. But do I need to? Isn't the point of GCPW/WDM/EDS to enforce policies and report back? Can more system access possibly be needed to report back beyond that given to the login management tool that can give any user admin access?
What is the overlap between feature sets of GCPW/WDM/EDS/DFS/EV? And if EV is needed/recommended for GCPW rollouts, why isn't that mentioned in the documentation?
4) Prorogation issues?
Yesterday's fun was realizing that my user didn't have admin access, despite all users being given local admin access by GCPW policy. Sync issue? Nope. If I put my local GCPW user in the local admin text box it gets admin access as soon as I sync. If I give admin access to a local account and then manually give my GCPW account admin access it is removed as soon as I sync. So sync works, it just doesn't sync the actual setting. Still waiting for the update from engineering on that one.
5) Reimaging isn't a solution
I get it that often a laptop reimage is a fast solution. Today I was told it was the best option for the propagation issue. Sadly that computer was our file server. To their credit, the agent quickly agreed and said they'd work with me to find another way to solve it (still a work in progress but a workaround is making do), but this isn't special in a business environment. If you market your product to replace AD, people are going to use it to replace AD, and that means anything from phones to laptops to servers. Login issues requiring a reimage are not acceptable.
6) Status
All the above has been painful, but this is the item that should most concern u/emreknlk_g, because it's the one that is a deal killer for enterprise uses. Known issues aren't being disclosed, either on the Workspace status page or the detailed information pages.
The problem I was troubleshooting in #1 was that our very first GCPW user suddenly couldn't log in today. "Your administrator doesn't allow you to sign with this account." She happened to be in the office, so I went and tried to login. Same issue. Call tech support. Wait 30 minute on hold. Hang up. Start a chat with Tier 1 in 30s. Get transferred to device team. Have them call me. Explain the issue. "Oh, yeah that sounds like a known issue that started a few days ago. Machines that have worked for ages suddenly don't let you log in. You'll need to manually set some registry flags to fix it." Cool. That's probably something you'd want to tell admins about. Because it cost me an employee day at a time of year where we average 16 hours a day. I could have preemptively set registry flags if I knew about the risk, but there was no way for me to know.
If your enterprise credentialing offering has an issue that may prevent users from logging in then it goes on the status page, if not out to potentially impacted admins by email. Every. Single. Time.
tl;dr
Enterprise SSO solutions are used by enterprises and they expect better than this. The device management team needs to rapidly write in-depth deployment guides for common rollout scenarios and invite some front-line deployment technicians for beta testing. Lastly, realize that when it comes to login services, bullet-proof isn't a stretch goal, it's an entry level requirement; incorrect rights propagation is an instant Fail in any security assessment and people being unable to login isn't much better. Hopefully it occurs before any major fubars happen and people go running back to AD.

Looks like "Apple Business Manager" AAD app doesn't recognize the request as coming from a compliant device >> conditional access fails >> Microsoft Login rejected >> federation fails >> Apple ID not created >> iOS device useless >> FUBAR

Posting this in case it helps others. I had a terrible time getting things going yesterday and encountered a slew of issues along the way.
First, there are two types of stuck transactions I've encountered.
1) Your transaction shows up in Etherscan but is stuck pending.
2) When you click the transaction link in MetaMask, it says the transaction cannot be found in Etherscan.
To fix 1:
You need to send yourself a 0 ETH transaction. Click on the from address in a stuck transaction to get all the transactions from your wallet. Click on a stuck transaction hash and copy the full hash.
Go to myetherwallet.com and click Check Tx Status. Paste the transaction hash in. If the transaction is stuck, you will have the option to inport your keys from MetaMask and unlock your wallet. Do that and right below, send yourself a 0 ETH transaction.
This will overwrite and kill that transaction. You'll need to do this for all of your pending transactions. Once you get them all cleared up, you are good to go again.
You most likely had your transactions stuck due to too low a fee. I've been using a gas limit of 300000 and one more than the Gas price std posted at https://www.ethgasstation.info/ (Currently 43).
To fix 2:
Your MetaMask is fubar'd. When you click on a transaction and it can't be found, I followed the instructions located at https://github.com/MetaMask/metamask-extension/issues/2655?_pjax=%23js-repo-pjax-container
You need to install the Brave browser. (https://brave.com/) This has MetaMask already installed. Under extensions, enable it. Sign in to MetaMask using your passphrase and choose a new password. Then in MetaMask, under options (small hamburger in top right), choose Custom RPC and enter https://mainnet.infura.io Then click save.
Login to Cryptokitties again and all should be right in the world. Your new MetaMask in Brave doesn't show the failed transactions.
I've been back in business using Brave all day.

Setting: It's early July of 2016. I have just been hired as a field tech for a company that was contracted to assist in the post-merger conversion of several bank branches to a new bank's system.
For reference:
BankA: The new bank. This is a national bank with over 1000 branches. This is their first merger in over 15 years, so their technology conversion process is in flux.
BankB: The old bank. This a regional bank that overextended its mergers with other small banks, making it vulnerable to BankA. Each branch is unique, which extends to their networking set-ups... which poses a challenge for each branch we visit.
Go West... and Take These Guys With You
When I got the schedule for the first week, I was excited: Pittsburgh! Somewhere not here! New scenery! Only two conversions, but... new place!
I had spent the previous six years in my hometown, doing a job that required me to sit at a desk for 8-12 hours at a time, or heading in to class and sitting on campus for hours on end doing classwork. The draw of this job was that there would be travel, and I embraced that like Jesse Pinkman embraced speedballs and Jane.
I quickly got a text from the nominal "team leader" for the week and our third man, and we arranged to meet at the shop Monday afternoon.
Introductions:
Crazy Tech (CrazT): Experienced A+ certified field tech with a very outgoing personality and a TMI attitude. Funny as hell.
Quiet Dude (QD): Doesn't do much in this tale. Studying to be a CCNA after getting fired from a local security guard gig for pointing out that his boss was racist.
Our team would be meeting up with an experienced 2-man team:
Solid Tech (ST): A solid tech. Go-to guy for solid tech support.
Solid Tech's Assistant (STA).
I took some time to pack everything I would need for the trip, including an extra day's worth of clothes (assuming that we weren't going to head straight back on Wednesday after the second conversion), and fidgeted my way through the weekend.
The Legendary F-150 Caper
We were assigned a domestic luxury-ish sedan to start with, and loaded our gear into the trunk. When CrazT fired it up, however...

CrazT: This thing runs like shit. It's stuttering... must be missing a cylinder or something.
QD: Maybe it will smooth out as we drive.

QD had brought a GPS with him, as he had picked it up to do long-haul driving with his uncle. After CrazT booked us two rooms somewhere in West Mifflin (southeast of Pittsburgh proper), and QD punched in the address, we headed out.
We got 5 miles.

CrazT: It's getting worse, man. I'm gonna text the Boss and see what he says.

What came back was permission to hit $GreenRental and swap vehicles for something that wasn't going to die before we hit the NYS Thruway. We headed to their nearest lot, and CrazT went in to make the trade.
He came out with the keys to a monster of a truck: a super-cab pickup that got horrifying gas mileage, but damn was it cozy.

CrazT: I asked them for one that we would be authorized to take. It was either this or a sub-compact, and none of us are particularly small.

And so... we set out. Again.
The Mystery Plates, The Running SUV Joke, and Other Nonsense
The actual route took us down I-87, then onto I-80. At around Wilkes-Barre (I still don't get how you get "berry" out of Barre), we bent southwest, and wound our way diagonally to just north of Pittsburgh, where we caught a state route south into West Mifflin. All told, the GPS told us it would take 8 1/2 hours.
We were already goofy at 2 hours.
We had just crossed the PA border when QD spotted a PA plate that vaguely resembled a diplomatic plate.

QD: What's that?

(I looked it up later... it was a DARE plate).

CrazT: I don't know, man. But if I see a fleet of black SUVs surround it, I'm turning around and heading back.
QD: 'Cause you know there'll be a shootout. With MAC 10s and stuff.
Me (fake British accent): Well, suh, we tried to get to Pittsburgh, but then we heard the incidental music, and realized we were about to be ambushed.

From that moment on, when anyone saw a black SUV, someone would hum the James Bond theme and we'd all laugh.
Our first gas stop was in Wilkes-Barre, right about rush hour. We stopped at a Sheetz, and it prompted more goofiness.

Me: I've seen several of these signs around. I wonder of they're as ubiquitous as Stewart's near us?
CrazT: You can tell who's town is rich by the number of Stewart's they have.

(Not really... Stewart's will put them everywhere they'll fit.)

Me: So... you're saying there's a socioeconomic correlation between Sheetz and relative wealth.
CrazT: We'll call it the Sheetz Index.
Me: I'll start drafting the thesis.

It was well after sunset when we finally hit Pittsburgh. We were all a bit fried from the drive, and we got a big shock when everything was closed when we got there... everything but a TGI Fridays's (which, despite being just a middle-of-the-road chain eatery, I still have fond feelings for it simply because they always seem to be open when you get to a city late at night). A quick dinner, a late check-in, and we all fell comatose for the night.
A Reluctant Early Riser
Company policy dictated that we double up where possible. Since CrazT had booked the rooms, he got the single and QD and I doubled up.
I have never in my life heard someone snore that loud in my life. Ordinarily, I can sleep though anything (I slept through a house burning down literally next door to me once, even with the fire department showing up with sirens blaring), but this dude managed to jolt me out of a sound sleep at 8 AM.
We weren't scheduled to hit the first site until 2 PM, so I Googled the nearest Dunkin Donuts (a mile and a half away) and started walking.
Don't walk in the suburbs of Pittsburgh. It's all hills.
A coffee, a muffin, and an hour and a half later, I was back in the room, and QD was still chainsawing away in dreamland. I got out a book, plugged in some music, and waited for the first conversion.
What We Are Paid For... Done Wrong
After a long drive, restless sleep, and the insane Pennsylvania drivers, we were zombies. Therefore, when my n00b team showed up 2 hours before bank closing to learn the procedures, no one tried to question anything ST and STA told us.
The first thing we needed to do was empty the tote with the new PCs in it, plug them directly into the new BankA switch in the networking closet room, fire them up, log in to the BankA network, wait for the BankB virtual machine to fire up, log in to that network, and patch the BankB software. This was a standard sized BankB branch, so we had about 11 machines to run through before close.
ST showed us how to do the first one, then let us unplug the peripherals (monitor, KB, mouse) from the tower, plug them into the next machine in line, and start on the next.
Everyone quickly realized that I was the fastest at this, as I had the monitor on the next machine almost before the patch started. While CrazT and QD set up the printers, I blew through the startups for the rest of the workstations.

Me: So how do we know when the patching is done?
ST and STA (almost in unison): Oh, that's easy, If the screen is black, it's patched. Just hold the power button until it shuts off.

...wait, what? The VM was a Win7 machine... doesn't it need a proper shutdown to act properly?

Me: Are you... sure?
STA: Here.

STA pulled the monitor from the last machine, and plugged it into the first. Sure enough, the monitor is blank.

STA: See? It's ready.

He then shut it down via the power button, unhooked it, and marched it off to pre-stage it at its new home.
I nodded, but... something didn't feel right. I may be a software guy with a BS in CS, but one of the reasons I got the job was because I have a CompTIAA certification, and I know that improper shutdown can be a problem.
Closing time rolled around. We got the new workstations installed in their new homes, Velcro'd the shit out of the new cabling, got them all swapped over to the new BankA switch, and fired them up.
Four of them got to the BankB VM startup and shit the bed. "Corrupt disk image error." Huh.

STA: Oh, that's normal. It's an installation issue from the shop.

The fix involved a guy from BankA remoting into the new workstation, clicking randomly around the screen for an hour to justify his paycheck, then restoring the VM image from a backup in the VM directory. CrazT was watching this, and went to the other 3 machines that are FUBAR to restore them. ST and STA tried to stop him, but...

CrazT: It's almost 8 now. By the time we get out of here, most of the good places will be closed, and we'll have to eat Friday's or McDonald's again. Fuck. That.

All told, we were there from 2 PM to 10 PM. The record, we were told in orientation, was 9 PM. We weren't even close.
Also, there were no real restaurants open, but we did get a decent meal from Primanti Brothers (where we met up with ST and STA), which the locals praised to the skies, so CrazT wasn't too irritated.
Still... it nagged at me. Something about the workstation patching didn't feel right.
The Fix
The next morning, at check-out, we met up with a very high-spirited CrazT.

CrazT: Hey, I'm feeling good this morning. I got a call from my girl, I touched myself, all is right with the world.
Me: Thanks for sharing that. Makes me glad we're not all sharing a room.

The plan, as far as we were concerned, was we were doing a smaller (9 workstation) branch, then heading back home. No one wanted to do the 8 hour drive at midnight, so we were trying not to go too far past the record.

Me: Are we doing the whole drive tonight? We could always stop about half-way, get a good night's sleep, then finish it tomorrow morning.
CrazT: That's actually a smart idea. We'll talk it over with the other team.

ST and STA, however, were dead-set on doing the whole trip in one bite. However....

ST: You have a separate vehicle. You don't have to go with us the whole way.

I got the job of patching the workstations again, so I did something different: I got them all set up, plugged them all in, and just BOOM-BOOM-BOOM fired them up all at once. STA almost shit himself in a panic...

STA: Dude, don't do that, you'll break them all!!!

...but I could barely hear him over the almost-deafening simultaneous Win7 startups. I then proceeded down the stack and logged in to the BankA network on every station. So far, so good.
I move the monitor plug to the first PC, plugged it in... and it's a black screen. Huh. "

Me: I haven't patched anything. This should be BankA's desktop.

I plugged the monitor into other PCs, and I still had black screens.

STA: See? You screwed it up. We need to shut them down and restart them to get the patch started. You've lost us time.

I got an idea at this point. I moved the cable to the first machine...
Bang. It's BankB's login screen. I log in to the BankB network and moved on down the the line, doing the same for each machine, while STA is staring agape...

ST (paraphrase): What dark sorcery is this?

About this time, CrazT and QD wander back to see what's what, and QD gives us some new insight... remember, he was studying for his CCNA, so his wisdom was received with rapt attention:
Apparently, when we unplugged the monitor from the machine, then plugged it back in, Windows 7 changed the display port. By unplugging it and re-plugging it, it changed it back to the working display port, and we got the display back. It would be quicker if we used Windows key + P to restore our screen.
Meanwhile, I was monitoring the patching process, and safely shutting down the VM when it was done. I had a feeling that the images were getting corrupted by the hard shut-down, so I was not taking any chances.
We had them all out on the floor, near their new homes, with 30 minutes to spare before close. Several of them were installed before close, where the original workstation was unoccupied and we could just throw the new one in without disrupting work.
Closing time came, and we swarmed over the the newly-abandoned positions like Mongols in a conquered city. Only one machine was corrupted, and CrazT was all over it before the remote tech could do anything.
We were done by 7:30 PM... a new record! ST and STA were dumbfounded but grateful. CrazT got his decent dinner. Everyone thought I was a Black Mage using his powers for good.
My way of doing the pre-staging became standard procedure for the rest of that phase of the project.
It was also the beginning of many wacky adventures, new friendships, and an inspiration for this series of stories.

I have long since stopped caring about her not going through proper channels to do this as she habitually ignores the rules she wrote. RHIP
I walk down the hall to her office and ask her to show me what the issue is. As if in perfect harmony a lightning bolt struck nearby and the wind picked up bringing in the dark omens to come. (Actually a beautiful day outside just embellishing for story)
She pulled up her phone and went to google.com.
Oh no.
With each letter she types out in the google search I scream in my head. W No no no!! E DEAR GOD NO!!! This continued until she had typed out webmail._______.compuserve. (Again embellishing)
She then clicked on the first advertisement link. It came up to a tan background with two boxes. Username. Password. No branding, no company logo, no anything.

$me - Is that a BYOD or a company device?
$WL - Company device. Why?
$me - Because it will be erased.

I told her this in a defeated tone as I grabbed her phone from her.

$me - This is not our companies website. It is a generic website that is designed to fool people into typing in their username and password. Someone, somewhere has your username and password for our domain.

This was the second time in my life I saw someone with 2 inches of armor reinforced makeup on lose all color in their face. Right at that moment I got a popup on her phone stating her device was infected with a virus and she needed to download and pay for their anti virus.
I turned her phone off then walked to my direct manager with $WL in tow. I explained everything to him and told him what was going on. I swear I saw two new grey hairs form in his beard when I finished talking.
At first the executive VP of IT got involved in the conversation. Then the server guys got invested in this as they checked to see who had logged into her account.
A 8:48 AM local time this morning her account was logged into by a russian IP address through the VPN. Because she used the same password for her domain and vpn...
The impromptu meeting in the IT office that followed involved quite a few bored execs who probably only came down because they like watching things burn.
I quietly tried to leave this whole tornado made of feces as it was about to slam into a jurassic park sized pile of feces spraying it all over everything and getting everyone dirty. But someone had to ask me a question the instant I stood up.

$Hit - What do you think?
$me - What did you say again? Sorry my tinnitus started ringing loudly again.
$HiT - What do you think we should do to prevent this from happening again.
$me - Close all of the remaining security holes. Citrix only from here on out on PCs. Thin clients for everyone not on the domain and secured email solutions for phones that require vpn. Also randomization of passwords. No more vpn and domain having the same password. No more using the same password followed by an increasing numeral every 90 days. No more allowing birthdays in passwords.
$HoF - Isnt that a little much all at once.
$me - I am naming off of the top of my head tickets I have responded to that were caused by these security violations in the last two months.

The meeting raged on for a full two hours until everyone in the office was taken aback at the solution the server guys came up with to fix this fubar.
A full 24 hour roll back of everything and a list of over 300 clients who have possibly had their data breached. All 300 unlucky spartans will now be informed, possibly by letters attached to persian arrows, that their data may have been compromised.
The first major security incident in over 2 years and it was caused by the head of HR. The CEO is currently on a jet and will be landing at DFW in 2 hours.
An infosec consultant has been contracted and is already working with everyone. I am forced to type this out in the parking lot on my lunch break because all non work traffic has been blocked on domain logins.
I would say SHTF but its more like shit hit the industrial fan causing an entire oil tanker worth of diarrhea to hit the same fan and fly into strategically placed fans around the office creating a stream of diarrhea that circles the office sweeping up anyone who gets caught in it.
For now I leave you with that image in your mind.

So I installed fed24 and everything was fine. Then I restored my backups.(literally just a TAR file of things from my home dir and a few other things. I'll paste it below) and now I can't get to any settings. I found this post which seems to be the same problem. When I try to open gnome-control-center as any user from the command line I get this error (note that this was done from my user's gnome login then in the terminal I su'ed to the user test):

Hello beautiful people,
I have taken this opportunity to tell you about a project I am working on: The Mighty Goblin. Although this is not a server, I think many of you are still going to appreciate the thought behind it, because I believe it will fill a gap in the legacy server community. Let me tell you what it is about:
For years I have been active in the private server community. I've played on dozens of servers, helped various projects and tried to contribute my fair share to the community. But one thing was bothering me for the longest time: There clearly isn't a lack of servers, we are witnessing new server coming up and old server going down almost daily. However, what the community lacks, is a central source for everything a player needs surrounding the actual game. I'm talking about addons, macros, guides, game downloads, general information about the game like timelines, class guides and more. You name it.
I know what you are probably thinking right now: "That's bullshit, with a bit of googling you'll find everything what you just mentioned." And you're right. There are a lot of various addon packages out there, you can find old guides on webarchives, there are macro compilations on various forums, and eventually you'll also find a reliable source of a client download.
However, wouldn't it be nice to have all of that available on one site and one site only? That's what The Mighty Goblin is about. Everything you need is out there - somewhere. I want to provide you a single resource to find all of that.
Well, there are a couple of things to explain here. Because on of the major parts of my project, at least for now are addons, let's talk about them first:
When it comes to finding an addon or a UI, there are more than just a couple of resources to find them: You can google an addon pack, that ships with hundreds of addons, also containing the only one you really want. There are a couple of sites providing an exclusive selection of addons, and there are also developers coming up with new addons providing them on their private site or other sites like GitHub or Bitbucket. The problem with those resources being scattered all over net is that you never really know what you're downloading. Does this addon pack contain any viruses? Is this the latest version/revision of the addon I need, or might there be an improved version somewhere I don't even know about?
You see, it could be a lot simpler than it is today. Remember back in the days, where you would just visit Curse or WoWInterface to download your stuff? No googling, no hoping for an addon to be the proper version you need.
The Mighty Goblin is going to bring you back that memory. We will heavily leverage the community in doing so. So how is this going to work? You, the user, will be able to upload addons to our site. Maybe an addon you yourself created, maybe one you found in an addon pack, or maybe just a specific revision of an addon that we do not provide yet. No matter what you upload, our site is going to scan it for potential viruses/mailware using VirusTotal. Every addon entry on our site is going to give you various information about the addon: Author, category, original release date, description, images, and more. It will also feature a table for every version / revision of that particular addon that we have gathered already. It will look something similar to this.
In addition to that, no matter what you upload, a moderator from our site has to review and approve it. This way we ensure not to have dummy entries and duplicates.
Well, so far you might not be impressed. Allow me to give you an overview of what the Mighty Goblin is going to offer:  
Security / Foundation

• We are building the Mighty Goblin using a PHP MVC framework called Laravel. Amongst various features, it is a very secure foundation.
• Our site will be hosted in Western Europe using a reliable DDoS protected, SSL secured server.  

Registration

• You will be able (and in fact you have to if you want to upload anything on our site) to register an account on our site.
• The whole registration / login / password retrieve mechanism is fully validated and CSRF protected.  

User System

• Because we want you to be part of the community, we will give you the opportunity upload an (Gr)avatar, enter various information about you like name, country, bio and more.
• In your user profile you will be able to see your own uploaded addons, as well as uploads which are still pending approval.  

Reward System

• For every approved addon / version / revision / guide / marco / you name it you upload you will earn points. Eventually elevating you to a trusted user, skipping the approval process. This way we want to give user the possibility to become part of the foundation of our site.
• The points you can gain are a way for use to thank you for your contribution. However, they will not give you any additional feature anyone else wouldn't be able to access. Everyone is able to benefit from our site to the same extend. There are no VIP features.  

Addons

• Well I've talked about addons already, but let me wrap it up:
• You can upload an addon that isn't in our database yet, a specific version / revision for an existing addon we don't offer yet or an addon you yourself created.
• Addon parser: We tried to design the process of uploading an addon as easy as possible. The first thing we need from you is an archive (zip, 7z, rar). Once you uploaded that we will parse it, check for viruses and read the contents of its .toc file. Because of that we will have some basic information about the addon you want to upload already, like: Author, interface version, addon version, revision. We will temporarily save that information and give it back to you in a form. You can than add a description (WYSISWYG editor) and images or adjust information we didn't get right. You can of course also set yourself as the original author of the addon.
• Changelog: In the future we are also going to implement a changelog parser, which will read the changelog file and add new entries to the changelog section of the addon.
• Dependencies / Plugins: Many addons have plugins / dependencies. Just think about FuBar and all its various plugins. Thru the parser we will be able to identify if the addon you're uploading has a dependency. After approval, it will be displayed on the addon entry page itself. Giving the user information about the dependencies this addon has.
• Sources: You will also be able to add other sources when uploading an addon. Maybe there is a GitHub repo out there. Add it, and we will display it for users to check out.
• Improved versions: Some original addons out there have received fixes from developers (An addon that comes to mind is ImprovedSRaidFrames. Addons like this one represent a special category because they are essential a vintage addon with modern fixes. They will be included in the page of their original addon, but marked properly to reflect the recent fixes.
• Upload restrictions: In some cases, we don't want anyone to be able to upload additional addon version to a specific addon. Maybe you populated on of your own addons. You'll be able to set yourself as the only one allowed to upload files to ensure no one messes with your addon files.
• Game version: When released, The Mighty Goblin will feature vanilla (1.12.1) and TBC (2.4.3) addons. However, once the site is growing and the demand is there, it's perfectly possible to include newer expansions as well.
• Featured addons: From time to time we will feature specific addons on the landing page, depending on download numbers and other things.
• UI's / addon compilations: Of course you will also be able to upload UIs and addon compilations.  

Search

• Needless to say, but you'll be able to browse for everything: An addon name, a category, a class, a macro, a guide.
• We will support fuzzy search.  

Macros / Guides

• In addition to addons you will also be able to upload macros and guides.  

Ratings

I have taken this opportunity to tell you about a project I am working on: The Mighty Goblin. Although this is not a server, I think many of you are still going to appreciate the thought behind it, because I believe it will fill a gap in the legacy server community. Let me tell you what it is about:
For years I have been active in the private server community. I've played on dozens of servers, helped various projects and tried to contribute my fair share to the community. But one thing was bothering me for the longest time: There clearly isn't a lack of servers, we are witnessing new server coming up and old server going down almost daily. However, what the community lacks, is a central source for everything a player needs surrounding the actual game. I'm talking about addons, macros, guides, game downloads, general information about the game like timelines, class guides and more. You name it.
I know what you are probably thinking right now: "That's bullshit, with a bit of googling you'll find everything what you just mentioned." And you're right. There are a lot of various addon packages out there, you can find old guides on webarchives, there are macro compilations on various forums, and eventually you'll also find a reliable source of a client download.
However, wouldn't it be nice to have all of that available on one site and one site only? That's what The Mighty Goblin is about. Everything you need is out there - somewhere. I want to provide you a single resource to find all of that.
Well, there are a couple of things to explain here. Because on of the major parts of my project, at least for now are addons, let's talk about them first:
When it comes to finding an addon or a UI, there are more than just a couple of resources to find them: You can google an addon pack, that ships with hundreds of addons, also containing the only one you really want. There are a couple of sites providing an exclusive selection of addons, and there are also developers coming up with new addons providing them on their private site or other sites like GitHub or Bitbucket. The problem with those resources being scattered all over net is that you never really know what you're downloading. Does this addon pack contain any viruses? Is this the latest version/revision of the addon I need, or might there be an improved version somewhere I don't even know about?
You see, it could be a lot simpler than it is today. Remember back in the days, where you would just visit Curse or WoWInterface to download your stuff? No googling, no hoping for an addon to be the proper version you need.
The Mighty Goblin is going to bring you back that memory. We will heavily leverage the community in doing so. So how is this going to work? You, the user, will be able to upload addons to our site. Maybe an addon you yourself created, maybe one you found in an addon pack, or maybe just a specific revision of an addon that we do not provide yet. No matter what you upload, our site is going to scan it for potential viruses/mailware using VirusTotal. Every addon entry on our site is going to give you various information about the addon: Author, category, original release date, description, images, and more. It will also feature a table for every version / revision of that particular addon that we have gathered already. It will look something similar to this.
In addition to that, no matter what you upload, a moderator from our site has to review and approve it. This way we ensure not to have dummy entries and duplicates.
Well, so far you might not be impressed. Allow me to give you an overview of what the Mighty Goblin is going to offer:  
Security / Foundation

• We are building the Mighty Goblin using a PHP MVC framework called Laravel. Amongst various features, it is a very secure foundation.
• Our site will be hosted in Western Europe using a reliable DDoS protected, SSL secured server.  

Registration

• You will be able (and in fact you have to if you want to upload anything on our site) to register an account on our site.
• The whole registration / login / password retrieve mechanism is fully validated and CSRF protected.  

User System

• Because we want you to be part of the community, we will give you the opportunity upload an (Gr)avatar, enter various information about you like name, country, bio and more.
• In your user profile you will be able to see your own uploaded addons, as well as uploads which are still pending approval.  

Reward System

• For every approved addon / version / revision / guide / marco / you name it you upload you will earn points. Eventually elevating you to a trusted user, skipping the approval process. This way we want to give user the possibility to become part of the foundation of our site.
• The points you can gain are a way for use to thank you for your contribution. However, they will not give you any additional feature anyone else wouldn't be able to access. Everyone is able to benefit from our site to the same extend. There are no VIP features.  

Addons

• Well I've talked about addons already, but let me wrap it up:
• You can upload an addon that isn't in our database yet, a specific version / revision for an existing addon we don't offer yet or an addon you yourself created.
• Addon parser: We tried to design the process of uploading an addon as easy as possible. The first thing we need from you is an archive (zip, 7z, rar). Once you uploaded that we will parse it, check for viruses and read the contents of its .toc file. Because of that we will have some basic information about the addon you want to upload already, like: Author, interface version, addon version, revision. We will temporarily save that information and give it back to you in a form. You can than add a description (WYSISWYG editor) and images or adjust information we didn't get right. You can of course also set yourself as the original author of the addon.
• Changelog: In the future we are also going to implement a changelog parser, which will read the changelog file and add new entries to the changelog section of the addon.
• Dependencies / Plugins: Many addons have plugins / dependencies. Just think about FuBar and all its various plugins. Thru the parser we will be able to identify if the addon you're uploading has a dependency. After approval, it will be displayed on the addon entry page itself. Giving the user information about the dependencies this addon has.
• Sources: You will also be able to add other sources when uploading an addon. Maybe there is a GitHub repo out there. Add it, and we will display it for users to check out.
• Improved versions: Some original addons out there have received fixes from developers (An addon that comes to mind is ImprovedSRaidFrames. Addons like this one represent a special category because they are essential a vintage addon with modern fixes. They will be included in the page of their original addon, but marked properly to reflect the recent fixes.
• Upload restrictions: In some cases, we don't want anyone to be able to upload additional addon version to a specific addon. Maybe you populated on of your own addons. You'll be able to set yourself as the only one allowed to upload files to ensure no one messes with your addon files.
• Game version: When released, The Mighty Goblin will feature vanilla (1.12.1) and TBC (2.4.3) addons. However, once the site is growing and the demand is there, it's perfectly possible to include newer expansions as well.
• Featured addons: From time to time we will feature specific addons on the landing page, depending on download numbers and other things.
• UI's / addon compilations: Of course you will also be able to upload UIs and addon compilations.  

Search

• Needless to say, but you'll be able to browse for everything: An addon name, a category, a class, a macro, a guide.
• We will support fuzzy search.  

Macros / Guides

• In addition to addons you will also be able to upload macros and guides.  

Ratings

• A user will be able to rate an addon, a macro or a guide. It will be reflected on its page.
• In addition to rating, you will also be able to comment on it, giving your two cents.  

Forum

The Mighty Goblin.

So about 10 months ago I started using steamOS in my living room. It was some work getting it all set up properly, but eventually I was able to make it behave reasonably well. Kodi was added as a non-steam game, and did just fine for viewing whatever was in my library over the network. I was able to coerce chrome into playing most streaming media (netflix/hulu/amazon) and using it in desktop mode worked just fine, especially after I added some shortcuts to make it easy for my computer illiterate family to find.
Then an update broke all of my steam controllers It turns out this wasn't specific to steamOS, but it was definitely a huge fuckup on valves part. I include it just because the steam controller is such a huge part of using steamOS (I actually didn't even have a keyboard attached up until it quit working in desktop mode).
Eventually the controller issue was semi-fixed, but it left some residual damage. My steam controllers had stopped working in desktop mode, and despite some heavy googling and poking around at the issue, I was never able to fix it.
As this went on, I noticed that Kodi had begun to crash occasionally while in the menus. It was mostly just a minor annoyance though so I never bothered trying to fix. Then about a month ago, an update came through and clobbered all of my settings. I figured it was a one time thing, so I re-did all of the logins and spent an hour or so re-creating my lost controller configuration for Kodi. A few reboots later I found all of my settings lost again.
The final straw happened last week. I went to boot it up and it went to a screen about some kind of error and attempting to restore to a previous version (I'm heavily paraphrasing here, I don't remember the exact text off the top of my head). A quick google search revealed that it was basically fubar, and it'd be quicker to just reinstall than try to get the recovery partition to work. At that point I decided I was done with it and threw windows 7 back on.
Anyway, I didn't mean for this to be a whine post. It's just that there have been a few high profile instances of people crying about negative experiences when they didn't even give it a fair shot cougharstechnicacough. Those often make it easy to brush aside every overall negative experience as just some overblown thing, so I figured I might as well be the guy to provide one where I really did want it to work out. Unfortunately, steamOS just turned out to not be worth the hassle.

Up front, I know there's some dumb customer stuff in here, so please keep recommendations focused on solving the problem thanks :)
I'm going to be performing a migration by taking two forests (lets call them contoso.com and adventureworks.com) and merging them. Currently the forests have no trust whatsoever. Roughly 3000 users total.
Normally I would merge adventureworks.com into contoso.com but the customer is adamant that their ADs are FUBAR and want a clean new AD. I checked and they are fine (no egregious schema problems or anything that can't be fixed) but they are adamant about a new forest and say it's a dealbreaker.
So fine, I plan to establish a greenfield ad.contoso.com (Netbios name CONTOSOAD) as a new forest and migrate both forests into that with ADMT and preserving SID history. No big deal, done this plenty of times.
Here's my concern: For their Google Apps AD Sync, the customer added contoso.com to the UPN suffix list of adventureworks.com and set it as the primary UPN suffix of all their users. That was fine before because both forests didn't talk to each other, but they want everyone in the company to have their login match their email address in the new forest. (emails are user@contoso.com even for adventureworks people in O365)
To do the migration obviously there's a period where the old domains will be trusted to the new domain, but now I have a problem where if a user isn't migrated yet and they try to log in with user@contoso.com to the new domain (or vice versa, log into the old domain when they've been migrated), it won't work because the new ad.contoso.com domain will need to have the UPN suffix and as far as I know there's no way to intelligently "route" this login to the old domain like you can do with proxyaddresses in Exchange.
The sync to O365 is no big deal, I'll just true up the identifier after migration.
I asked the customer if he'd be OK with even at least temporarily having people log in during the cutover with user@ad.contoso.com or CONTOSOAD\user when they are cut over for a few weeks until the migration completes and then we can tell them they can use their old logins after the old forests are decomissioned and I add the UPN suffix at that point. They said that's super-undesirable because "our users are dumb"
So:
looking to see if I'm missing a better way to do this, or if I just stand my ground and say "look, you want it done this way, the temporary login is the best way to do it for minimal user interruption, just write up good user documents and it'll be fine, it's just a few weeks"

Backstory: HP Elitebook with fingerprint reader and facial recognition camera. During the upgrade it tells you to uninstall HP ProtectTools. However after upgrading, Microsoft Hello is not giving me options to set or use a fingerprint to login nor does the camera option show (I wasn't expecting the camera to work for Hello Facial recognition). Checking device manager the biometics and finger print drivers are there and installed. So I googled a bit and found a KB/Win10 support article where they Microsoft suggests installing the software in compatibility mode for Windows 7. So I installed it and the finger print reader worked. However it changes the login screen to give you the finger print reader option. Upon logout, all you will get is a spinning circle and a flashing blue screen. It is unable to load the login screen.
I had to boot into safe mode, hack the registry to enable the MSIServer so I could start the Windows installer service to uninstall it in safe mode.
TLDR: HP protect tools will fubar your login and cause epileptic seizures due to flashing blue screen.

First things first, specs:

• OS: Windows 8.1 Enterprise (Windows updates current as of June 10th 2015) - Installed since April 10th 2014.
• Motherboard: ASRock Z87 Extreme 9/AC
• CPU: Intel Core i7 4770k
• RAM: Kingston HyperX Beast 2400Mhz DDR3 CL11 (4x8GB)
• GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3GB (x2)
• System drive: Intel 520 Series 240GB (x2, RAID 0)

Problem & Symptoms:
My PC has been working like a dream for the past 14 months - no issues at all except when Nvidia released their 350.12 driver a month or so ago. I rolled back to 347.88 and everything went back to normal.
Last week I went on a 5-day trip, and my PC which is usually on 24/7 got some rest (power off, powercord disconnected). When I came back yesterday I plugged it in and booted up, proceeded to log in as normal, and everything seemed OK. I started going on about my tasks, fired up FileZilla, PuTTy and Chrome to admin my Minecraft server, when I noticed the programs were locking up. Most notably I saw that FileZilla would freeze, and PuTTy just plain did not start. Odd, I thought to myself, and proceeded to shut down the processes via Task Manager. It didn't work, "End Task" didn't produce anything at all (not even the "Program is not responding" box). Alright, I proceeded to do a graceful shut down and restart of my PC and when I got back to the login screen and entered my password and hit Enter, I noticed the login taking longer than usual (the spinning dots). After that, the screen went black. I didn't touch it for a minute or so, then started to wiggle the cursor.
The cursor appeared, but nothing else. Tried to Ctrl+Alt+Delete, which allowed me to Lock - Log off - Switch User - Start Task Manager. Tried to start Task Manager to see what the eff was up, but it didn't start (cursor turned into the blue loading-wheel for a while and went back to normal). Tried to Log Off and back in, but the result was the same. Logged out again and restarted the computer, logged back in and the same thing would happen.
Resigned, I logged out again and attempted to log in on a different account. Mind you, my account is a Microsoft Account (login via e-mail address), whilst the other account is my girlfriend's local account on my machine. It worked.
The local account logged in without any problems, apps started quickly and I saw no slowness or lag at all. I then tried to Switch User and log back in on my own account, but the results were the same. Logged out again, back into the local account and poked around a little. Logged out again and yet again tried my own account, but this time the desktop actually loaded after a few minutes of Black Screen.
However, it did not load completely. The task-bar showed up, but with nothing else than the Windows (Start) button present. When I tried to start apps, they would either start right away (Chrome) or linger for minutes before anything happened (File Explorer). Some apps didn't start at all and ended up as unresponsive tasks (Internet Explorer, go figure). Sometimes there would be a lot of program windows popping up at once, programs which I had tried to start but didn't produce anything right away. Like, 4-5 File Explorer windows, FileZilla and the Metro Screen would pop up at the same time. Or downloads via Chrome (tried to download Malwarebytes) suddenly popped up 4-5 times at once along Chrome's download bar with the message "Failed - Network Error" due to me clicking the download link too many times (nothing happened, frustration got the best of me).
Alright, I though that account is fubar, but I don't know why. Logged out and back onto the Local Account to see if I could run some tests. Downloaded Malwarebytes (correctly this time) and ran a scan. It found two issues inside Windows catalogs and fixed them (sorry, I don't have a log as I'm at work right now). Re-logged to my own account to try again after a reboot, but things remained the same.
Back into the Local Account, I ran a "sfc /scannnow" which ran successfully and reported back that it fixed some issues, but not all of them. Tried to check the CFR.log, but I couldn't see exactly what it was that didn't get fixed. Also ran a ChkDsk on the system drive, which found no errors.
Rebooted again and logged onto my own account, but alas, the problem persists. Nothing has changed.
I didn't have time for more last night, so now I'm wondering what there is to do about this issue? Should I perhaps try to remove my Microsoft Account and add it back again? But wait, SFC reported that it couldn't fix all issues it found, is the system fubar? Do I have to re-install my box? (Oh the agony, Windows 10 is only a month away...). I need some tips from you guys!

Take this rant with a grain of salt. I'm just a little worked up because for the last 5 hours or so I've been trying to pre-order $888 worth of Steam stuff to no avail.
I created my account, added the items to my cart, and then went through the checkout process, to get this "Undefined: OrderSubmissionError" message right after the payment screen.
Try again. Same Undefined: OrderSubmissionError error.
So, I disable my ad-blocker, clear all my cookies, log out of the site and try again from scratch. Same Undefined: OrderSubmissionError message.
Hmmm... Even though it didn't appear to be a browser issue, I decided to validate. So I try from Firefox instead of Chrome. Same Undefined: OrderSubmissionError message.
So, I used their "Live Chat" help option. Do you know how long you have to wait when you're 29th in queue? Spoiler: A long fricking time.
The very nice help person with the very Indian name in the "help" chat had no solution for my issue, and created a ticket for their IT people to investigate. I was told it would be corrected within a couple of hours.
Fast forward about three of hours... I try again. This time: I can't login. Apparently, they reset my password or locked the account (know I had the correct password because LastPass had been entering it all morning). So, I had to use the reset password option.
Their mail servers are slowwww... it takes about 20 minutes to get the reset e-mail, and I get into my account again. Everything looks the same, except they removed the payment option I had saved (a card I use on NewEgg with no issue whatsoever).
I go to checkout again.... Same Undefined: OrderSubmissionError message.
At this point, I'm thinking "Okay, the account is somehow FUBAR.", so I look for a way to delete it. There is no way to delete it.
Okay, forget deleting it... Now I create a second account with a second email address. Add the items to my cart. Checkout. Same Undefined: OrderSubmissionError message.
I noticed a bug in their back-end process while playing around at this point too. If your password has a period (.) in it, like "userid.2@mydomain.com", and you get it to send you verification codes it will incorrectly send them to "userid@mydomain.com" instead. It also shows this same bug when it fills in the email on the page with your order's shipping information. Oddly, it sends password resets to the correct ".2" address.
At this point I wonder to myself: "What if their website programmers are retarded and somehow the site doesn't like the user agent string coming from Linux?". So, I go to a Windows machine. I go through the whole process again, and get The same Undefined: OrderSubmissionError message.
At this point, all I can figure is that they are somehow having trouble processing the credit card details (though it works fine on other sites), and have the most retarded catch-all throwing out this generic error instead of telling me what's really wrong. I'm not sure though, because I tested putting in an incorrect expiration date for the card, and got a real (actually helpful) error that explicitly said to re-check the card details.
So then I try from another machine, another browser (IE.. bleh) and try to buy as a guest user. Same Undefined: OrderSubmissionError message](http://i.imgur.com/LWTCsOt.png). Seems like it certainly has to do with verification of the card - but it's falling through and giving this completely uninformative error instead.
If there was any other store I could pre-order with right now, I would.

As I said in yesterday's story, a while back I was working on a project for a large retail company. They had recently split from their parent company and were in the process of building out their own international network. I was brought in towards the tail end of the project because someone had done the math and realized that there was a good possibility they weren't going to make the cutoff date to be off the current network if something wasn't done, so I got the call.
The gig was pretty straight forward. Field crews would go into the store after closing, install the router, switch, and phones. Sometime between 8pm and 8am, they would call us and we would get everything provisioned, configured, tested, and ready for the store to open the next day. This would be my 4th time doing this exact type of thing, so it was old hat for me. I was just coming off a 6 month break from working due to medical issues and this was going to be something relatively easy and relaxing to get me back into fighting condition.
It took me about 4 days to get back into the swing of things, but by day 5 I already had everything I needed to do scripted out. The configs were cookie-cutter, so all you had to do was change the hostname, IP addresses, SNMP info, and DHCP info. I sat around and created files that contained all this info for the 500+ stores while waiting for the field techs to call. When the call would come in, they would give me the store number and I would make the folks in comp.unix.shell proud by using cat the way the way God intended and spit out my config scripts based on those different files I had created earlier. I once received a UUOC award back before some of you were born, and I wasn't about to get another one.
The stores were all connected back home via MPLS, but we also had 3G failover in each of the stores should the MPLS link drop. The 3G was running over DMVPN back to the home office, and at this time my entire experience with DMVPN was in the form of 2 pages in the 2007 CCIE R&S Written Exam V3.0 study guide. (Due to a combination of alcohol induced amnesia the night of the test and the Cisco Certification and Confidentiality Agreement, I don't remember if it was actually on the test or not.)
A couple months have passed; things were going smoothly and we're now on track to finish not just on time, but actually EARLY. About 3/4 of the stores were up on MPLS, and the remainder were running solely over 3G. We only had a handful of stores left to build out, so I transitioned from working overnights to working normal hours. One Friday a call came in that one of the stores was having an issue. A construction crew had cut through some conduit they thought was empty, but of course it wasn't, and the store's T1 was going to be down for a while. I knew that the store's 3G backup was configured, so all I had to do was troubleshoot from the head end device. Once that was done, DMVPN should automagically build the tunnel and connectivity would be restored. I was working on other stuff at the time, but this would only take a second...
I open Putty and ssh in to look around on the ASR and find out why the tunnel wasn't up. While I was doing that, I saw the VPN connection complete. Good, problem solved and it didn't require anything on my part. I left the session open because I had to do some other stuff in that router and went back to working on the other stuff I was working on. I had 6 brand new routers on the bench the needed to have base configs put on them before being shipped out. Paste the config script into one, pass it right to the next guy for peer review, then he'll box it back up and ship it out. Pretty boring stuff.
I pass one of the routers down my coworker to review and start working back on the ASR when he turns to me and says:

"Hey, Cajun... I don't think your script is working. This doesn't look right."
"What are you talking about? My scripts are ALWAYS right."
"Yeah, sure. Can you ask your ego to take a look at this?"

I go over and look at the config. At first look, I don't see a problem. I'm convinced that my coworker is just messing with me because it's after 5 on a Friday and we're desperately trying to get finished with these things and hit the bar. There's only one thing to do, and that's consult the RITA.
The Reliable Internetwork Troubleshooting Agent, aka RITA, as described in RFC2321 is "a hardware-based tool for diagnosis and repair of network related hardware and software problems." It has broad areas of application at all levels of the OSI model; in addition to uses in the physical, network, transport and application layers, it has been used to successfully address problems at the political and religious layers as well.
The way you use the RITA is to place it on top of the suspect piece of hardware. If the RITA does not get up and fly away, the hardware or software being tested is misconfigured, fubar, or broken as designed. But the RITA is known to have about a 10% false positive rate, so you can't always trust the results of its broad-spectrum evaluation, or BS eval.
For those of you that haven't clicked to read the RFC, the RITA is actually a rubber chicken with an ethernet cable sticking out of its ass.
My coworker places the RITA on top of the router to perform the BS eval. I reached over and slapped the RITA off to show him that the RITA did in fact get up and fly away, so the test was successful and in doing so knocked it straight into my mouse. We sat there and went over the config for a couple of minutes, found the issue (it was my script), and watched as notifications started popping up on our screens that stores were losing connectivity. Then the phone started ringing. It was 5:30pm and bad things were happening. We were the only two left in the office so we start scrambling to find out what the hell happened. I sat at my computer and that's when I saw it.
To paste something into Putty, you simply right click your mouse. Anything in the clipboard automatically gets entered into the screen. The active window on my screen was the head end router. The clipboard held my config script to the router I just worked on, including a "write mem" at the end. The RITA that I just slapped off said router hit my mouse and pasted the entire baseline config script from a store device into the headend device overwriting it's config and writing that config to memory.
My coworker and I both do our best to remain calm... there has to be a backup somewhere. We call the lead engineer who designed this system on his cell to find out where the backup was only to have him tell us "Uh, we haven't added that device to the config backup script yet. I have a backup on my desktop though." He won't be somewhere he can login to reconfigure it for another 45 minutes and he sure as hell isn't giving his his password to pull the backup off his desktop.
This can't be happening to me right now.
I immediately think back to those two pages from my study guide. I can do this. I start rewriting the config while my coworker is researching how to do it properly and we finally get it done. It's not perfect, it's definitely not pretty, but it works. Total elapsed downtime: 47 minutes. Total sites affected: all of them. Total stores completely down for those 47 minutes: over 100.
The lead gets to where he can plugin his laptop and he remotes into his desktop, pulls off the config and gets the ASR back to where it was 3 days prior. We get the config back to where it was before "the incident" and all is good. It's 8:30pm, time to go home.
On the way into work Monday morning, I knew it wasn't going to be fun. I walk in, go to my desk, and get to work without anyone saying anything. An hour later, the boss walks in...

"KiltedCajun, Coworker, can you guys come to my office for a minute?"

Coworker and I walk together to the boss's office, heads down. As we walk in he tells us to close the door behind us.

"What, exactly, happened Friday night?"
"Well, we were working on another problem when there was an accident. The config on the ASR got overwritten with one of the baselines."
"So I heard. Now, would you like to explain to me just how the hell a rubber chicken managed to take down 100 of my stores?"

Coworker and I then spent the next 5 minutes or so explaining the story. I took full responsibility for everything; after all, I was the guy that made the RITA fly. Then we had to sit there and explain why there was a rubber chicken with an ethernet cable sticking out of its ass on the bench. After we had explained everything, I was sent to fetch the lead so he could explain why there was no backup of the config. At the end of the day, accidents happen, but those kinds of accidents are the very reason we keep backups of things. The RITA was a problem, but the lack of a backup was the crime. (At least that was my argument)
I found out about a week later that I wouldn't be one of the consultants converted to employee, though my coworker was going to be sticking around. There was a month left before my contract would end and for that time I wouldn't be working on any mission critical gear. I only lasted 2 weeks before I signed the offer letter at my next job and the boss told me I could end my contract early with no penalties.
On my last day I brought in a present for the guys that would be sticking around. I called it RITAv6. RITAv6 had been converted from 802.3ad to 802.11g and the ethernet cable was now replaced with a console cable. For RITAv6 to work properly, the console cable had to be plugged into the aux port before being placed on top of the router. In this way, the RITAv6 was tethered to the hardware that was being tested and could only fly 12 inches in any direction. I found this to be a much needed upgrade to the original RITA standard.
EDIT: I apologize if my stories come off as a bit long. I personally prefer to be able to read an entire story in one sitting rather than waiting for the next chapter to come out, so I'm going to write all of mine in a single post. I've been working in this industry for over 20 years, so I have a ton of stories, and as long as you guys want to read them, I'll have no problems writing them. I'll make you a deal though; I'll do my best to keep my stories around 10k ± 1k, at the absolute maximum (even shorter if at all possible) and I won't serialize them unless it's a story that absolutely has to be serialized (and I have a few of those). In return, I'll ask that if I start getting too verbose and rambling on in my stories, let me know in the comments. I'll probably ignore you, but it'll at least make you feel better.

So, since my last post, quite a few things have changed with SteamOS.

• Now supports AMD/ATI and Intel graphics chipsets
• Now supports non-UEFI BIOS types
• Can now be installed from an ISO located here

If you download the ISO above and burn it to DVD (or utilize your preferred USB Boot tool to create a bootable USB Stick), you can now install SteamOS.
NOTE: THIS WILL WIPE YOUR HARD DRIVE AND INSTALL DEBIAN LINUX. DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU HAVE NOT BACKED UP OR DO NOT WANT TO SWITCH TO DEBIAN. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR DATA LOSS IF YOU FAIL TO TAKE PRECAUTIONS

• Run the normal installation
• After the install completes and the system boots up into the Debian desktop, you will see the Steam License agreement. Click through to accept.
• When you get to the Steam Login screen, REBOOT
• This will automate the SteamOS setup process, which results in the creation of a recovery partition in case things are fubarred.
• Once complete, you will end up in SteamOS, which is basically a souped up version of Big Picture Mode.
• From here, click on Options, then Interface, and check the box "Enable access to the Linux desktop".
• After this, go back to the main display, and click Exit. This should bring up the option to "Exit to Linux Desktop"
• At this point, you are dumped back into Debian.
• Set a password for the main user by opening a terminal window and typing "passwd" sans quotes.
• You can now run sudo commands as a result.

I've been able to successfully install XBMC from here using the instructions at http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Installing_XBMC_for_Linux. I'm still reading up on ways to either Launch XBMC directly from SteamOS (as a non-steam "game"), or to launch SteamOS from XBMC, depending on your preference.

Ok, so here's the story.
Last night, I was playing Bad Company 2, and all was well, when all of the sudden, my screen went white. I tried to alt tab out of game, thinking the game just crashed, but then I got a message saying that the Nvidia drivers crashed and have recovered.
However, they didn't really recover. The entire PC went down seconds after that. I rebooted, tried again, and this time I couldn't even get to the main menu in BC2. I end up crashing again, I restart, try BF3. Same crap. Crashes the entire PC.
This time I boot it up and it's super low definition. I look in device manager and find that the 580 is disabled due to instability concerns. Ok. Well, I decide to reinstall drivers. I uninstall my nvidia drivers, reboot windows in safe mode, use driver sweeper, reboot, reinstall drivers from scratch, and then start up again. After windows loads, where I should be getting the login screen, I get a black screen. I push the power button after about a minute of this, and then do startup repair. I get back to the startup screen, after which it crashes and I get bluescreen code 116.
Not good. I do some googling, and find out it COULD be hardware related, but it's hard to say, it's one of those blanket codes that basically say that your GPU isn't working properly.
Seeing how I just previously had problems reinstalling drivers like this during the BF4 beta, I also wondered if something was wrong with my windows install. I mean, I ended up, just a few weeks ago having problems similar to this, except without the bsod, and they were fixed by a system restore, and ultimately, by changing the method I updated drivers. Seeing how I was now using the method I know worked, it was weird to still have this problem.
I tried a system restore....loaded up the PC, and then I got these white squares on the desktop followed by another BSOD....weird. Uh oh. At this point, I wonder if windows is really the culprit, or hardware.
So I reboot my PC, and it does the 116 code after startup again.
I can still get into safe mode though, with the GPU disabled. So I try another system restore, which failed, and this time, the colors were all weird and I was in 640x480 mode. Another system restore, and I was back to desktop....it seemed to work, but I kept getting errors about how the Nvidia drivers crashed but then recovered. I tried BC2 again for craps and giggles, and boom, crash. Another system restore, and then I tried Minecraft and Planetside 2. Minecraft ran, but I still left after like 30 seconds. Planetside 2 worked for about 15 before crashing.
Couldn't get back to windows, so I booted up in safe mode. This is the next morning, this morning by the way. My dad needed the PC to print, but I found out you can't print in safe mode, so I ended up trying another system restore. This one failed, and I couldn't even get into safemode.
Well, now my windows install appears to be fubared, lovely. So I do a clean install, whcih I was thinking of doing anyway since I figured there was a good chance my install was just messed up and thats why I was having so many driver problems. So I delete my previous install, and install from scratch. Everything's back, success. I'm only using the basic display driver though, not the 580. So I install avast and firefox, and then install nvidia drivers. I reboot as told, and I get to the loading screen, when......boom, another 116 code. Welp, it's not my install, I'm on a fresh install of windows, completely clean slate, and it's still doing this. So it SEEMS to be a hardware issue.
Does anyone else have any experience with this? How did you solve it? I tried MULTIPLE driver versions, including 314.22, 327.23, and the new 331 ones released last night. Same crap no matter which ones I use, even installing from scratch.
I also tried system restore on my new windows install. It worked once and then it screwed up like my last install. So now I have another new fresh install, no drivers installed yet.
So here's the question. I have no other PC to test this 580 on. Should I try to reseat the card? I don't see it helping much, since I've been using the 580 for almost a year without problems until recently. I could install my old 5850. Should I try that?
Also, I have a question about RMAs. I didn't buy this card. My friend gave it to me when he upgraded last year. I looked on EVGA's page, and it does mention that I MIGHT fall under warranty. Should I try to RMA the card, and do you think I would apply under guest warranty?

This applies for cards bought after July 1, 2011. I don't remember exactly when my friend bought his 580, but I don't recall him having it for very long unless my sense of time is seriously distorted. Still, even if he bought it before, would I still apply for the warranty since I received the card last December?
How exactly does EVGA warranties work here? Do you think I can get a replacement if it is indeed broken?
Also, before I forget, my full specs:
