Colorado tax attorneys

My husband and I are working on our trust/will and our attorney will only handle clients where the estate is worth less than $4mil since she is not a tax attorney. We are very close to that if life insurance is included in that amount.
So that's my question. Is life insurance that has named beneficiaries included as part of the estate toward that $4mil before our estate would get taxed?
I was always under the assumption that anything with named beneficiaries (i.e. IRA, 401K, HSA, brokerage, bank accounts) would not be part of the estate and just go directly to the beneficiaries. But maybe I'm conflating what would have to go through probate vs what would get taxed (in IL).

I’m in need of hiring a family law attorney to assist in divorce, custody and spousal/child support matters.
As I begin my search and interview process I’m curious if anyone could share their experience, what they looked for and what they learned. Also if there’s anything you wish you knew.
Some specifics I need:
This is going to be a complicated case.
-my partner is a self employed business owner with multiple LLCs. -I found out recently he is paying his taxes in a state we do not live in to save money. (I’m guessing) - I also found out he has been paying me a salary through the business as a tax benefit for himself but has never given me access to this account or made me aware of this.

I've been reading through all the posts in regards to NJ Family Care and I see that it's basically a horror show. With that in mind, I'm trying to make sure I get everything correct as my situation is a little "involved." They are asking for my marital status which is technically "married," but I have not lived with my spouse for almost ten years at this point. Up until recently, he was violently opposed to divorce proceedings and would spew all sorts of threats regarding my wanting to file. We never went to court for anything, I essentially threw whatever belongings I could in bags and fled with our two daughters who were pre-school age at the time (now they are in middle school.) So there was never any court ordered support and over the years he has sent random amounts of "support" via Paypal, had them visit when it fit his schedule and provided medical insurance coverage through a group plan he had through an association he belonged to. I've also never had the money to hire an attorney for the divorce because providing for my two daughters all those years alone never left anything extra for that sort of thing. He lives in NY, I moved back home to NJ in July of 2022 because I was pregnant and moving in with my current partner. I just found out that he stopped paying for my daughters (and my) health insurance so I need to get the three of us covered. I have no income, I stay home with my son who is 20 months old and my partner works ( has his own insurance through his job for him and our son) so I think I should be able to qualify - my one daughter is also autistic (enrolled with an IEP in the special education program through the local district.) The application asks my marital status, I'm wondering what to put down because while I am married, it's not to the person who I share a household with (my partner files taxes as head of household and claims my daughters as dependents because their Father does not and he's the one who actually supports them.) So what would be the proper response? I'm not legally separated but when I put down that I'm "Married" it will not let me advance without inputting spouse information. I put my partner down as a household member but he is "Single" along with all the kids. My technical husband is NOT a household member.
Second question...I assume they will take into account my partner's income which would probably be more than the thresholds for social services. Will this prevent my daughters and I from getting health coverage? I mean, he makes a decent living but we are just making the mortgage and bills with the crazy cost of living here. I also see that they want bank statements from reading some of the other posts. This time of year we have a little extra in our accounts because of his tax refund but in no way are we ever close to being this "stacked" and by stacked I mean I had a couple thousand when any other time of the year i might have a couple hundred bucks lol.

So I work for the goverment as and attorney and I've had my current job since 2021 when I finished law school.
I took this job knowing that it was on the lower end in terms of salary for new lawyers, but it was good experience in a field that was interesting, so I figured why not.
Still the salary was very low. It's literally googleable if you knew my exact position and state, so I don't mind sharing that they started me at about $65k. I got anther $5k raise when I passed the bar, and then a $2k raise my second year so I was at $72k.
For reference, in my city, most new attorneys in medium sized firms start around $100k to $140k, and at the really big private firms they pay $140k to $170k. I'm in a big goverment firm so I expected to make less but $72k is definitely even less than I was expecting.
Still, this might not seem that bad, but my city is big and exspensive, so tbh $72k doesn't go very far. I pretty much live pay check to pay check, with taxes, rent, school bills, my car bills, and food eating my whole check.
In fact I have $3k in credit card debt and I haven't been able to make any sort of dent paying it down because i run out of money before my next pay day usually and live off my credit card for a few days.
Anyway my office calls a big meeting this morning and I honestly thought I was in trouble, but they explained that based on some contract the city had for city employees, idk a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo tbh, tldr we were apparently being under paid.
It was determined that we were actually supposed to have been paid $90k per year this whole time, so they said that would be our new salary and we would also get retroactively paid at that rate for the time we'd already worked.
Then they individually told us what size check we would get based on when we started and for me the retroactively amount came to $12k.
So my salary jumped $18k per year. Meaning my next pay check will be like $300-$500 more plus the additional $12k.
I was honestly considering finding a new jobbbecause I was just running a deficit with no clear way to fix my finances, but now I can pay off all my debt, put a bunch in savings and the raise should keep me from drowning moving forward.
All in all is been a good day!

When filing my grandmothers 2021 taxes the IRS denied the return because they said she was deceased and she very much was not. I spoke to someone and was told it was an electronic issue to file with a paper return. No problem, filed a paper return and nothing happened spent hours on the phone multiple times and got no help. Fast forward to filling the 2022 tax return same issue. Repeated the same spent I closing resending the paper tax return for 2021. Box years a refund was owed to her. Finally I was told I must bring her with me with identifying paperwork because the IRS wouldn’t recognize a financial power of attorney. Okay wouldn’t be an issue but by this time mid 2023 colander year my grandmothers dementia had gotten to a new low, she was barely mobile and struggled very much with being in new places. Last thing I wanted to do was drag her to downtown Cincinnati into some office to likely sit around for hours and cause distress. She sadly passed away last month and today I am wondering what my option are. Do I forget about it and let them keep their 3/4 thousand bucks or is there a way to handle an issue like this now that she is gone an a personal representative (executor) has to be the one to handle things and I have a death certificate to prove she died in 2024 not 2020. Any advice is much appreciated as trying to get help from the IRS is a total freaking joke.

These Official Rules, and any action related thereto, will be governed by the Federal Arbitration Act, federal arbitration law and the laws of the State of California without regard to conflict of laws provisions. We each agree that any dispute, claim or controversy arising out of or relating to these Official Rules or the breach, termination, enforcement, interpretation or validity thereof or participation in the Sweepstakes (collectively, “Disputes”) will be resolved solely by binding, individual arbitration and not in a class, representative or consolidated action or proceeding. You and ZAM agree that the U.S. Federal Arbitration Act governs the interpretation and enforcement of these Official Rules, and that you and ZAM are each waiving the right to a trial by jury or to participate in a class action. This arbitration provision shall survive termination of these Official Rules.
   
3. Exceptions. As limited exceptions to Section 15(a) above: (i) we both may seek to resolve a Dispute in small claims court if it qualifies; and (ii) we each retain the right to seek injunctive or other equitable relief from a court to prevent (or enjoin) the infringement or misappropriation of our intellectual property rights.
   
4. Conducting Arbitration and Arbitration Rules. The arbitration will be conducted by the American Arbitration Association (“AAA”) under its Consumer Arbitration Rules (the “AAA Rules”) then in effect, except as modified by these Official Rules. The AAA Rules are available at www.adr.org or by calling 1-800-778-7879. A party who wishes to start arbitration must submit a written Demand for Arbitration to AAA and give notice to the other party as specified in the AAA Rules. The AAA provides a form Demand for Arbitration at www.adr.org. Any arbitration hearings will take place in the county (or parish) where you live, unless we both agree to a different location. The parties agree that the arbitrator shall have exclusive authority to decide all issues relating to the interpretation, applicability, enforceability and scope of this arbitration agreement.
   
5. Arbitration Costs. Payment of all filing, administration and arbitrator fees will be governed by the AAA Rules, and we won’t seek to recover the administration and arbitrator fees we are responsible for paying, unless the arbitrator finds your Dispute frivolous. If we prevail in arbitration we’ll pay all of our attorneys’ fees and costs and won’t seek to recover them from you. If you prevail in arbitration you will be entitled to an award of attorneys’ fees and expenses to the extent provided under applicable law.
   
6. Injunctive and Declaratory Relief. Except as provided in 13(b) above, the arbitrator shall determine all issues of liability on the merits of any claim asserted by either party and may award declaratory or injunctive relief only in favor of the individual party seeking relief and only to the extent necessary to provide relief warranted by that party’s individual claim. To the extent that you or we prevail on a claim and seek public injunctive relief (that is, injunctive relief that has the primary purpose and effect of prohibiting unlawful acts that threaten future injury to the public), the entitlement to and extent of such relief must be litigated in a civil court of competent jurisdiction and not in arbitration. The parties agree that litigation of any issues of public injunctive relief shall be stayed pending the outcome of the merits of any individual claims in arbitration.
   
7. Class Action Waiver. YOU AND ZAM AGREE THAT EACH MAY BRING CLAIMS AGAINST THE OTHER ONLY IN YOUR OR ITS INDIVIDUAL CAPACITY, AND NOT AS A PLAINTIFF OR CLASS MEMBER IN ANY PURPORTED CLASS OR REPRESENTATIVE PROCEEDING. Further, if the parties’ Dispute is resolved through arbitration, the arbitrator may not consolidate another person’s claims with your claims, and may not otherwise preside over any form of a representative or class proceeding. If this specific provision is found to be unenforceable, then the entirety of this Dispute Resolution and Arbitration section shall be null and void.
   
8. Severability. With the exception of any of the provisions in Section 15(f) (“Class Action Waiver”), if an arbitrator or court of competent jurisdiction decides that any part of these Official Rules is invalid or unenforceable, the other parts of these Official Rules will still apply.
   
9. Languages. These Official Rules may be made in multiple language versions. In the event of a dispute as to the terms of different language versions, the English version shall prevail.

My retired parents are aging, they are in the late 60s, with no savings, and rely solely on their social security income to live.
They own their home (that was built by my dad in the 80s) and have very little left to pay it off, less than 100k (they had to do a reverse mortgage in the early 2000s, followed by bankruptcy due to the expense of my mother's cancer treatments at the time).
A few years ago, my oldest brother decided to build a home on my parents property (at his own expense) to move closer to them and help out with their expenses. My parents agreed thinking this was meant to help them. This has come back to bite them.
My brother's home addition caused a reassessment of their home value to double what it was before, effectively raising their annual property taxes. Since about 2018, my oldest brother has paid a bulk of their mortgage and property taxes.
This changed during last year. 2 things happened:

1. My other brother (younger) and his wife and 2 young children needed to suddenly move back in with my parents (due to financial hardship), with their approval. This other brother pays a set amount each month to go towards my parents mortgage and other expenses.
   
2. In November 2023, my oldest brother's wife lost her job, right before my parents taxes were due.
   

My oldest brother (seemingly threatened by my younger brother contributing to my parents household expenses and feeling the loss of his wife's job), immediately demanded that my parents grant him power of attorney, and sign away all of their assets to him otherwise, he would no longer pay a cent for anything (mortgage, taxes, utilities) that they all share. Based on what I am told, he got verbally aggressive towards them, and questioned their mental health during this ordeal. They refused to sign.
At this time my younger brother recieved his year end bonus, and contributed nearly his whole check to pay down their property taxes that were due, which still did not cover it in full, it is my understanding that my parents were unable to contribute. They are now on a paymemt plan, and their payments (now with impound), claim nearly 100% of their social security even with my younger brother's help.
Since then, my oldest brother has refused to pay for anything while he continues to live on my parents property, his wife has since found a new job after receiving unemployment.
My younger brother told me this week that my older brother was yelling at our father, due to our father painting my parents' house a color that my older brother did not like.
I want to help my parents get out of this situation, I cannot help financially or with housing (my husband and I live in a small home currently with 1 bd/1bath), and we're are currently in contract to purcahse our first home (a new construction home that will be completed in the fall, so all of our money is tied up there).
I feel the best course of action would be for my parents to sell their home and purcahse another one (cheaper and outright, to reduce their expenses). Currently, they are unable to afford their new assessed taxes on their own.
They have about $750k equity in their home, not including my brother's addition, roughtly another $400k-500k.
How do they go about this? They have very little credit, no savings, fixed income, and my brother's addition tied to their property.

If I understand correctly I'm well below the standard deduction so I won't have to pay inheritance tax in Japan nor do I have to report it (correct me if I'm wrong)
We want to sell the land. This means I have to calculate capital gain.

1. for 取得費 (acquisition cost?) can I include the cost for accepting the inheritence (notary cost, registration in land register, fee paid at Greece embassy in Japan for setting up a Power of Attorney, attorney fee (did the work necessary procedures to accept the inheritence), accountant fee (set up tax account in Greece so I can pay taxes necessary for inheriting)?
2. For 譲渡費用 (cost related to sale?) can I include the attorney and accountant fee when they do work for me in order to sell it?
3. I was just told I need to pay inheritance tax in Greece (€8000) . If I can sell it in 3 years (starting after inheritance tax declaration deadline date) can I add this to 取得費 according to [続財産を譲渡した場合の取得費の特例](https://www.nta.go.jp/taxes/shiraberu/taxanswejoto/3267.htm)? Or is this limited to inheritance tax paid in Japan?

My parents have been working with an attorney to set up a dynasty trust. But I read some reviews and there are a number of very dissatisfied clients. DT is not something you want screwed up because it can't be changed. So I have some questions.
I am an only child and will not be having kids. I'm not married either but that is likely to change. The attraction to DT is the lack of taxation when my parents pass and the inability of creditors, ex-wives, etc. to touch the money in the trust.
Because a DT exists for such a long time, I understand they can cause problems for future generations because they are so restrictive and a third party trustee is involved. But in this case, I am the trustee and the only beneficiary of the DT.
In this case, does it even matter how poorly written the DT might be? Let's say it has issues we don't catch up front, since I am the the trustee can I just ignore the flaws and do what I want? Is there anyone who can object if I am not following it to the letter? What about institutions I might name as beneficiaries. Could they object? Would they even know they are named if I don't tell them?
What if I get married and have nieces/nephews. Now I have possible heirs in my wife + nieces/nephews, can they object to the way I manage the trust if I don't follow it to the letter?
I know there are annual reporting requirements that are supposed to be drafted even if you are the trustee and beneficiary. But again, is this really necessary if there is nobody to hold me to it? And if it has to be done, how involved does it have to be? Can it be something I informally write, or does an attorney $$$ have to be engaged to do it every year?
In our situation, is there a better instrument? I don't know my parents exact finances but I would be absolutely shocked if they passed on an amount over the current $36M which would trigger taxes. They live comfortably but not that comfortably. Of course that limit could be drastically reduced at any time so the tax component is a nice safety net. But it's a crazy world full of shady lawyers and I like the idea of the money in DT being untouchable.
We are in California and I suspect it will be a California DT.

For 9 years now I’ve been driving my faithful 2005 Civic 2dr with 205k miles, clutch is slipping, leaks oil, and currently needs other maintenance work done like brakes and tires before winter hits here in Colorado. I could probably keep driving it for the rest of this year, however I’ve always wanted a truck or a bigger vehicle with Awd or 4x4. Ideally I would love a Honda Ridgeline, the comfort of an SUV, the perks of a newer vehicle, and a truck bed incase I ever need it (I don’t really need a REAL truck). The BUT here is, that I’d be taking out about a $26k loan on maybe a 50k mile Ridgeline, and after taking into account taxes and what I pay my school loan yearly I’m only bringing in 30k a year. Although I’d love to just say “fuck it” and send it, it feels a bit gross to take that loan out with what I’m currently making. Last night, I started to look for cheap Toyotas on Craiglist (not really a thing lol), and I fell in love with the look of the Gen 3 4Runner. I found a 2001 super clean one with 177,000 miles for about $10K. Is that too much? If it has history of being well maintained, no alarming red flags like rust or other things, can I count on this still being a reliable vehicle even though it’s 23 years old?
I think I’m leaning towards paying 10k or less for an older well maintained reliable vehicle, and in a few years as I move up in my career and salary I can pull the trigger on something newer? Thoughts?

My parents are still in good health but want me to start looking into how they can best transfer their properties to me after their eventual passing. Their concern is mainly around how the taxes and evaluation will work when it comes to setting up a trust or leave a will or just let it naturally go to me as I am their only child.
Is this something I should consult a real estate attorney on or something super simple to just google?

I am located in the City of Pittsburgh and have been trying for months to get my neighbor (a slum landlord) to Cleanup his property, I.e., 3 ft. Grass, empty 5 gallon buckets with mosquitoes breeding, tires, general garbage.
I have gone to community meetings at the local church, (where community leaders; police, city representatives, etc. Were Present.) I was told it would be handled, police said they would fine him, but I haven't noticed any postings.
I have contacted the 311 line for Pittsburgh complaints, of which on the 3rd time the inspector became very retaliatory and told me that he was going to fine everyone on the street, which makes no sense, smh.. we all take care of our property, as a community should.
I have contacted the Allegheny County Board of health. Mesquites are breeding and swarming. Have heard nothing back, too date.
All of these entities have done nothing.
I would like too initiate a law suit against the owner and potentially every entity i have dealt with regarding a lack of support.
The owner has several property's thru out Pittsburgh that he does the same with, according to court records online. Also, he has not paid the taxes since he purchased it 4 years ago.
I have decided to sell and am afraid this will affect the sale price. I feel the owner should be responsible for making up the difference in amount received for the house in the sale.

I work in a small firm (attorney, two legal staff, one billing-only staff) but we have almost 200 open matters as of today. I have been handling a vast majority of the cases (mix of dissolutions, wills/POAs, guardianships, and appeals) and have thankfully gotten the attorney to agree on halting new client acquisitions until further notice.
Our receptionist/legal secretary is leaving in two weeks. We (meaning me) have been training her to handle more tasks in order to help reduce my duties and make the office run more smoothly. Now that she is leaving, I will have to transition to handling her job duties in addition to mine until a replacement can be found and trained.
I have realized that I desperately need some things to make my job easier, more "automated", and hopefully reduce the number of phone calls and/or follow-up tasks by combining or having prewritten generic forms. For example, new dissolution clients would ideally receive a pre-fabbed, generic packet containing the following:

1. list of our contact information (emails, hours, phone numbers)
2. checklist for required documents (tax returns, credit card statements, income information, etc.)
3. communication guidelines (no shit-talking on social media, in person, text messaging, etc.)
4. documentation guidelines (if spouse is verbally aggressive, document time, location, describe incident...etc.)
5. Guide for managing guardian ad litem appointments (what they are, why they're appointed, what they're looking for, etc.)

Do any of you do anything similar? If so, does it actually help? I have created an information-only sheet to help with our appellate clients and the number of phone calls has reduced significantly. (I was shook, honestly). I'd like to know if this list would be worth the time and effort...

I flew from Colorado to Texas to purchase my Bolt. The dealership told me they could not apply the federal tax credit at point of sale but I could apply the credit to my 2024 taxes. This looked legit from what I can see online. In my excitement about my new car and desire to get on the road for my 16+ hr drive home I did not realize they didn't give me the point of sale report. I've been asking for it since I arrived home and realized they didn't provide it but now it is over 2 weeks later and the salesman barely replies to my calls and emails and just keeps saying he is waiting to hear from finance. I see instructions on IRS.gov about how to file if you don't have a copy of the time of sale report but I suspect the dealership didn't even report the sale. Any recommendations on what I should do now?

I owe about $5,400 for a personal loan that was secured against my car title with a 20.5% interest rate. This was a dumb decision I made when I didn't know I had better options but it was to make necessary car repairs and to help pay for an attorney for a family matter.
I owe about $9,000 on a credit card with a ~32% rate. This was used to finance my father-in-law's funeral.
Finally I owe about $3,000 to my state in unpaid taxes because I messed up and did not include a 1099R form when I had to take a 401k early distribution that was also for the previously mentioned attorney and to pay off wife's school balance so she could finish her degree. I am not yet eligible to initiate a repayment plan for this debt so I am not making any payments currently.
I specified the reason for each debt to show that the debt didn't come from unnecessary spending, it was mostly from unexpected, familial matters that are not reoccurring.
Credit score is in the low 700s and annual salary $244,000. I have submitted a loan application with my credit union to see what rate they'll quote me but that is still pending. Outside of them I have been quoted about 16.25% on a 4 or 5 year repayment schedule.
