Passive solar Q for the thermodynamic engineers out there
Pic for attention
I have a large residential pool, only heated through solar located on the roof, no other source of heat. I have 12 panels, services by 2" line where I can modulate the flow from full on to full off and everywhere in between. I have temp gauge showing temp going up to the system and then as it returns from the roof.
My question is around optimal heating.. When in full sun and running open the temp delta is 2-4 degrees (depending) but when throttled way back, ie. sending less flow to the panels, I can get 10-20 deg heating - again depending. The returning water is obviously immediately mixed with the rest of the pool as it exits the jet.
My question is - is the energy and potential pool heating the same? Is a larger body of water at +2 degrees exactly the same as a smaller body of water at +20 degrees?

Need more amps for inground pool - who’s right?
Hi everyone,
We are installing a 17K gallon pool. It’ll have three pumps, a heater, and an assortment of lights. An electrician came out to our house today and looked at our 200 amp service box and said we have enough room for a 100 amp breaker to run a line down to the pool to a separate dedicated panel.
I am not an electrician, but my pool builder is telling me that it’s likely instead that we’ll need to upgrade our panel to something like 300-400 amp service which of course isn’t part of the pool price we agreed on.
Our house is 4,600 sq feet with what looks like breakers that hold well over 200amp currently in the panel. Gas furnace but AC, a couple washedryers, couple ovens, lots of lights.
Just wondering if I should buy what the electrician is saying and risk overloading our system, or alternatives to upgrading our main panel and shelling out thousands.

Tips for Staying in Vilamendhoo Island Resort & Spa
  • Whilst more expensive, if within your budget and an adult group do stay in the water villas. They are brighter, private and spacious- I guess I have already mentioned the highlights in my review.- June is classed as down season but to be honest I wouldn't want to go at any other time when it's busy. Apparently the resort was only half full but this was perfect for us- I think divers would benefit from nitrox certification before going. 2024.05.21 20:37 Helpful_Wrongdoer_53 which is riskier? To stay or go?

Currently applying for a more senior role in a private equity backed IT firm. I like the role more than my current Customer Success role although role is still under Customer success umbrella.
Current company: dinausaur- old, very old;public;global in reach;triple to quadruple size of the prospective new company.high pay, great OTE good benefits. i didnt get any salary adjustment this year because 1)group retention number is not high enough 2)new manager says im already on the highest peak of my salary grade.
New manager is too early to assess, ex colleague who got promoted.previous manager is almost 20 years in company, she was the one who hired most of the team members, she left suddenly.the ex boss, her boss and the VP lead of the entire Customer success org, 3 levels up basically left in the past 18 months.all these VPs have worked more than 15 years in the company.
All new leaders from execs all less than 2 years in role- CRO, Ops Vp and CS leader, seem good, but has repeated history of trimming the fat of any org they take over, internally or where they used to work.Earnings show company is negative p&l for 4 or 5 quarters now, high opex mainly due to high cogs which is mainly sales salaries because we are technically like SAAS.growth is less than 4pc annually. CS team is fully remote but many other employees outside CS are being called back to office.Company seems bleeding, current ratios are getting red.stock chart is a descending ladder since going public after being private, which it was forced to do after mega restructurinh. Originally public in the 00s then went private then public now, layoffs are part of the culture.there are Hundreds of long term employees with decades of tenure.they have also started outsourcing their key service overseas.Upcoming department change, CS teams are getting assigned less accounts, one group will be converted from dedicated enterprise to pooled/low touch CSM approach by Q3. Also rolling out a new automated client success software. Company is putting out fires and new peoducts continiously, has an established and solid brand but has attracted lots of legal battles that claimed it is fraudulent.I cant shrug the feeling our CS team will get laid off given more than half are assigned to low revenue or non performing account segments after a new GTM was designed but not yet launched. There are many others doing my job, im not a leader, and career progression is a question mark, possibly lateral but not leadership unless a major overhaul happens.when a VP position opened, they claimed hundreds applied, and more than a dozen were internal.they hired external and promoted 2 to supervisory roles but doing so added reporting layer to 20 other individual contributors who prebiously reported to a vp and now just reporting to a director.
Prospective company: old brands plus new IT niche products, private equity backed, kinda dropped hints that salary is a bit lower than my current range though the advertised wage is within my target. Given the hints they might get to match or even up the nasic salary but may not even come close to my current ote.as per linkedin people are mostly recent hires 3 years or less, company is undergoing rebranding and trying to get second or third wind, fully remote.their brands are old so they are fighting to be more modern, competitive and relevant, something I had multiple experience with from my previous companies which digitized, cloud migrated and converted evergreen to subscription based offerings. prospective companu is backed up by private equity,so have no sales or revenue figures to review. i have no idea what happens if they suddenly get dropped or sold.
with all the lay offs going im worried that if I am new in any org i get more proned to get laid off, but i really love the role described, and i have this gut feel i will enjoy the challenge whereas my current role in my present job is day by day diminishing our client success value,by no longer doing dedicated CS engagements as we move to low touch.
No one seems safe from possible lay offs, what would you do if you were in my shoes?

2024.05.21 20:27 we1rdtuesday Doorbell inside (true story)

Doorbell inside (true story)
January 2021, after the retail holiday had ended, it was time for a well-earned vacation. When looking at rentals on Airbnb, I was searching for two things: WiFi and a hot tub in the mountains. I found a lovely one-bedroom, one-bathroom rental off the highway in Idaho Springs.
The travel time was four hours, and we arrived very early for check-in. We were so early that we got to meet the owner and her tiny dog. My guest reviews on the app show that I’m very communicative, and although I have a knack for unexpected delays, this trip was the sole exception.
She was preparing the house for our visit and formally showed us the space. She also provided a home-printed binder booklet of travel/house details and another guestbook for visitors to sign.
She left promptly at our actual check-in time, and the place was ours. It was HOT TUB IN THE SNOW TIME.
The rental had everything you could possibly need to cook. Many appliances were largely unused due to their incredibly specific functions, but they were a nice addition, especially since many rentals skip on cutlery and basic kitchenware.
The roof was especially sloped, making the space seem hexagonal from the outside. A sunroom separates the entrance from the outside, creating an enclosed porch with sliding doors on the left and right walls. The cabin itself was very beautiful. All wood, though I can't speak to the type—just very real and strong authentic carpentry. A functional large brick fireplace is the focal point upon entry into the living space.
There was only one other entrance, which we never used, as it was on the far left side of the house, behind the kitchen, where the path was hidden beneath snow. Nearest the exit is a locked door, which could lead to a basement or a water heater—we never found out. The adjacent door leads to a classically tiled bathroom with a enclosed tub. A huge mirror sits on a slant against the wall of the master bedroom, opposite the door and parallel to a tall window. The internet has taught me to always look behind mirrors and inspect other objects for small filming equipment, but there were none.
We had intended on staying for two nights. That’s all we could afford to take off work with a retail salary. The hot tub was a blessing, and the cabin was near a small town with flea markets and other adventures to explore. However, we never went into the town.
There is a certain irony to a cliché coming true. Of course, the most chilling events didn't unfold at 1 or 2:30, but at 3:05 a.m. It wasn’t a bump or a bear or anything that could make sense—it was a doorbell that sang. Not a simple "ding-dong" that could be slept through, but the entire Westminster chime. I had to Google the song because I never knew the name, only humming it out loud during explanations. It's 15 seconds long, completely unmistakable, and there wasn't a single grandfather clock to blame it on. Ten seconds in, I'm waking up my date to ensure this isn't some exclusive hallucination.
I flood the cabin with lights while they get up and look out of every window and peephole from the inside. No rustling, no figure or animal to be seen, no tracks in the snow. All the doors are already locked, and with no other explanation, it must have been a fluke of some kind.
If it had only been once, maybe it would have been. But at 3:45, an encore of Westminster chimes played.
After some well-deserved rest following two doorbell performances, it was time for a thorough investigation of the premises.
The unused exit door does have a doorbell, but no chime can be heard when pressed. This is the only doorbell on the outside. Inside the sunroom is the only other doorbell, and not only does it start the chime we’ve heard before, but it also has to be pushed in no less than two inches to ring at all.
I was scared after the first and final chime and figured the host might offer a solution—blah blah wiring or something similar. They offered to turn off the doorbell. That’s when my date finally expressed their fears.
“If they turn it off and it happens again, we will have been the idiots that end up in a movie.”
Their fear only made me spiral, but not enough to prevent me from getting one more jump in the hot tub. The host refunded us for the second night since we were checking out early. Not wanting to be alone but not wanting to take a dip, my date waited by the tub while my iPad was in the cabin filming for any activity. The footage is long, and the results didn’t catch anything that I could scrub for.
Did we leave too early? The cabin and the host were both entirely welcoming but the bell was enough of a warning to pack up. I took pictures with time stamps of the second bell ring and might even still be able to recover the nothing footage. This footage and correspondence with the host are on a damaged phone but once its repaired I will update with more evidence. I have the booking details for anyone who wants to know more about the layout: airbnb listing This is the closest I have ever come to the paranormal, it could be fun to go back and get more footage, after all the listing seems active.

I'm planning of going sukute beach resorts with my friends this weekend. But the reviews for all the resorts are disappointing. Moreover the places seems to be overcrowded at weekends. Any suggestions for relatively less crowded resorts at dhulikhel with swimming pool and better fun activities like volleyball or table tennis?

2024.05.21 18:53 calibeaches_ Abnormal heart rate during running of a 1/4 triathlon?

Abnormal heart rate during running of a 1/4 triathlon?
I have started training about 8 months ago. I am a generally reasonably fit and healthy person.
Last weekend I had my first 1/4 triathlon. In my preparation, I had simulated it at home: swam in the pool, biked and then ran, changing clothes quickly at home. In this tun, I had an abnormally high heart rate of ~210+ bpm for about 15 minutes or more. This is thr first picture. It had always been 185 max in my preparations. I was a bit concerned but thought it might be a glitch in the optical sensor of my watch (garmin instinct 2 solar). My heart rate during swimming and cycling was normal at ~140-165bpm.
Last weekend I did the race and had the same. A heart rate of 220bpm for 2km (10 minutes). This is the second picture. Again, hr of ~165 while cycling.
Should I be concerned?

2024.05.21 18:14 gizzlyxbear Blue Steel (1990) and the “phallic woman”

Let me preface this by saying that I’ve never watched a Kathryn Bigelow movie before this. That said, I’ve seen enough of the discourse about this movie online to know that it’s considered a black mark in her career. I can say with assurance, as a Bigelow newcomer, that this movie rips. At some point before making super nationalist movies, it looks like Bigelow was creating feminist, Marxist films, I guess?
Blue Steel is hiding a lot of commentary on working class and gender struggles underneath all its late ‘80s/early ‘90s New York grit and grime. I’d go so far as to argue that the movie is a little too on the nose at times in its imagery and storytelling. Nonetheless, it’s a surprisingly biting piece of film.
The idea of a gun as a phallic symbol in cinema is nothing new. The earliest example I can think of is 1950’s Gun Crazy, in which a pair of ill-fated lovers consummate their on-screen love through brute firepower. As a phallic symbol, guns draw upon ideas of violence, power, and patriarchy in their imagery. In making Jamie Lee Curtis’ Megan Turner a powerful woman with a gun, she becomes a “phallic woman”, possessing male power in a patriarchal society. This is made even clearer when, early in the film, she becomes a detective; quite literally a “female dick”. This fetishization of firearms is furthered with the opening close-up shots of Megan’s pistol. The way the camera tracks along the hard edges and grooves of the gun as if it were a close-up of a woman’s body in any other film is telling. Paired with Megan donning her policeman’s uniform, it becomes a sort of male drag. There’s a sense of anxiety that comes with the “phallic woman” trope. This is usually mitigated by the camera: showing these women as either villains—attacking and rejecting them—or making them sex symbols. To get around from this mitigation, the film shows a scene early on in which Megan reveals she’s a cop to a potential suitor. As he finds out that she is a woman in power and, more importantly, is carrying a gun, he quickly becomes disinterested—disgusted even.
Alternatively, in Ron Silver’s character, Eugene, the gun becomes symbolic of lost power; lost masculinity. From a Marxist perspective, Eugene has lost his essence by working within wealth and finance. He is corrupt in comparison to the “common working man”. When he first acquires a gun, he sees it as a form of liberation for himself. Eugene is aware of his financial power; as much is shown during his first interactions with Megan. Through the lens of the phallic gun, though, the film shows his yearning for physical power, something otherwise unreachable for him. This comes to a head during one scene where he’s shown scrambling, looking desperately for his misplaced weapon—true panic on his otherwise composed face.
On another level, the film works by taking the narrative structures of both the slasher and rape-revenge horror subgenres and placing them within a crime-thriller context. Eugene becomes a sort of boogeyman, not unlike Michael Myers; killing victims one by one. Also like Myers, Eugene just keeps coming back, a near-unstoppable force. In this way, the casting of Jamie Lee Curtis is brilliant. Some subversion and further gender commentary also takes place here, by having Megan present as a much more androgynous “final girl” type of character. There’s a brief example of that androgyny in a scene where Megan walks home from her police academy graduation and is nearly mistaken as a male officer by two women.
Moving on from the thematics and the characters, the cinematography of Blue Steel borders on pornographic—a comment I’ve also made towards Infinity Pool, a body horror piece. The photography is slick and well-lit (save for one arguably underlit scene in the police precinct), bordering on Michael Mann lighting at times. There’s a lot of very up-close shots as well, but even when it isn’t getting up close and personal, the way most of the movie is framed is very intimate.
Where the movie loses me somewhat is on the strength of its writing—or lack thereof. While I think it’s very well-acted from everyone involved, I think they could only do the best they could with the material given. It’s not overly cliched, but it just comes off as weak and not punchy enough.
The Vestron Video blu-ray transfer is gorgeous. As with their Earth Girls Are Easy transfer, the colors absolutely pop off the screen. There’s also some very healthy, very welcome film grain present throughout, adding to the griminess of the experience.
For genre film fans, this is a very easy recommendation. Anyone looking for highbrow, though, can look elsewhere.

2024.05.21 18:03 Safe-Mortgage6919 Heat pump question

3rd year into pool owning. So I just got an electric heat pump. We have never run our pool pump 24/7, just a few hours a day to maintain the chemical levels and while people swim. We don’t know if the heater now means we have to run everything 24/7 or if we can set it to just run a few hours each day like we usually do…..any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

2024.05.21 18:01 Important_Garage_437 I need advice and help understanding electric companies and plans after recently installing panels.

tl:dr—I don’t understand providers and plans as well as I thought I did. I’m being charged double what my buyback is, and want to look at my options. Is this normal now, and what success has anyone had with solar and electricity plans in Texas?
Context: I live on the gulf coast in Texas and really needed to find ways to make my electricity more affordable. In addition to adding a Smart Control thermostat, we also decided to get panels. They were finished installed and connected this March. However, I thought I understood the way the panels and service from my provider would work, but I absolutely did not as I’m still deep in the ridiculous rabbit hole of how providers don’t allow for good rates on buyback anymore it seems. I’ve done as much looking around as I could at companies, reviews, older Reddit /Solar experiences, and I just want to have feedback on the current rates and experiences.
My current provider, Reliant, is charging .11/kWh for import, and buying back at .05/kWh. My first month be provided about 100 kWh more than we used, yet our credit towards the bill was around $40, leaving a $70 bill. The panels were installed by a third party company and we pay a little over $200 for 5 years to own the system.
Now I didn’t expect a “free” usage from my provider once the bills came around, but this is just ridiculous. And that first month was us covering our entire usage, but it won’t always be this way. Like right now, it’s very cloudy and we aren’t producing enough to match our usage. Did providers seriously nerf the buyback rates to continue their profits in the growing solar market? Because paying $20k for an electric bill to be marginally reduced is absurd. The fault is mine for not fully researching before I jumped in, I usually am more vigilant than this. I’ve talked with a rep at Gexa that claimed they had a 1:1 buyback and rollovers. I saw Octopus claimed the same, and TXU. But I’m skeptical based on reviews. I feel like this is a repeat of what happened with cellphone companies once text messaging became “free”.
What should I expect for plans and from what companies? I want to switch to something better, but I also understand that I’m still gonna be charged something. I’m also still learning terminology, so if you could explain some of those that I may not understand, that would be appreciated.

2024.05.21 17:46 Clark649 Kobra 2 crap firmware. Not suitable for prints with critical dimensions.

Here is the review I am about to post on Amazon. 6 years ago I was proficient in configuring Marlin. I am no longer proficient and could have made some errors. Please correct me. My solution is to rip out the controller and install a new open controller system.
Amazon review:
This is my 6th 3D printer over many years.
This is an outstanding printer if all you do are art prints without any critical dimensions.
The engineering of the build is outstanding and it is a very fast printer.
Customer service is outstanding and they immediately shipped out a new power supply with upgraded Thermistors after the original power supply smoked. Startup after a my house lost power probably turned on the bed and nozzle heaters at the same instant causing the failure.
I bought this to print parts for a microscope build.
What I found is that complex parts with more than 1 critical dimension did not come out close to the specified dimension. That one dimension still had to be fudged in Scaling. These required dimensions had loose tolerances.
The slicer has Scale and Hole adjustments but these are for minor filament variations. They are not for gross firmware errors.
I took a quick look at the config h file for ver 3 firmware at Github. The esteps for XY were set to a whole number. When I went back to do a full workup of the numbers, version 3 firmware was no longer posted on on Github, a violation Gnu terms of open source license.
Their customer service is limited in this situation due to the refusal of Engineering to review and correct their code. The code was just plain speced wrong.
I will have to install a new control system that is not locked down in order to take advantage of the excellent mechanical build.
I have to print an idler pulley this week. It has several critical diameter dimensions. It will be done on my ancient Monoprice Mini Delta. It will come out correct the first time. I do not have the time to do the trial and error of having to change the model for the print meet the required dimensions.

1st Time Buyer - GMT Sprite CF - Disappointed?
https://preview.redd.it/9cgnokcaus1d1.png?width=433&format=png&auto=webp&s=77361276240769df6efc28061d77ae2ee117a2cb
Hi Guys,
I am a long time lurker and a first time buyer. I found a really respected supplier and went for the GMT Sprite from Clean Factory.
I used to own a Gen GMT Master II.
I took it too a watch repair store owned by somebody I know who used to work at Rolex for 10+ Years for pressure testing.
Just wanted to share my experience and review of the product.
Overall I am very impressed, the quality of the watch is amazing, I have no idea how somebody could tell it is fake.
I've been to Istanbul before and seen the "good" reps, I was told an easy way to spot a rep is to shake it too your ear and you'll hear the mechanism shaking/vibrating. I remember testing it on my Gen GMT and couldn't hear a noise at all, maybe a faint one. I found the noise of this Rep Sprite to be quite loud. But who is going to shake your watch to their ear?
The watch guy who pressure tested it said its the best rep he's seen and had I not said anything he would of struggled to notice, he inspected it after I said it was rep and he was impressed.
I mentioned the shake/vibrate noise and he said it does sound louder than a Gen but nothing to worry about. It's the self winding mechanism working or something.
He didn't want to open it up as often the Rolex tools he has doesn't fit perfectly with reps and didn't want to risk damaging it.
The pressure test failed 30m & 10m. He said not to risk wearing it in a swimming pool. Which surprised me as I've read reviews of people saying theirs is waterproof and even remember a post of somebody wearing theirs during a triathlon and had no problems.
He also mentioned when removing some links the tools he used didn't fit perfectly and was harder to remove links than a Gen (who cares though right?).
I asked him to waterproof it and he said he would rather not have to open it up and suggested to just keep out of water with it.
Overall I am happy with the purchase, the supplier was great, communication was good and the delivery was faster than I expected. Will be purchasing again.
I am slightly disappointed with the noise when shaking next to ear and also the fact it isn't waterproof. But besides that I am very happy.
Just wanted to share my experience and strike some discussion and opinions.
