2024.05.27 18:58 reasonable-oil-4711 G50 hybrid - did i get a lemon ?

Hi, I have had an Eufy G50 hybrid (gyro naviagation) here for a few days (my first Eufy product).
The device has various quirks that I am not familiar with from other robot vacuums and would therefore like to ask whether this is normal for Eufy/this model or whether I have got a faulty model or whether this is normal for Eufy, that the software apparently still has beta status with a newly released product.
Firmware 1.03
Example:
English: Activate child lock.
German: Pump fault, please contact service.
Example:
English: long press on the power switch, voice output "shutting down", robot switches off.
German: long press on switch, voice output "childlock activated", robot stays on.

Hardware:
The device started to rattle after approx. 5m (seriously). Probably this metal blade for removing hair from the floor brush.
The blade in question has drivers that ensure that the blade is not in the way during normal operation. After 3 hours of operation, these drivers are already polished and you can see that material has already been removed at this point. Not confident about the endurance of this part :-/

Navigation:
The robot runs into most objects at full speed.
It does not recognize shoes, shoe boxes, table legs, chair legs, round plant pots, door frames or sloping doors/half-open doors. It drives too close to walls. The robot therefore also drives against walls with skirting boards that have a contour (i.e. protruding slightly from the actual wall).The only thing that has been recognized so far are completely flat surfaces that the robot approaches head-on (e.g. my white , flat entrance door, tiled walls in bathrooms). In almost all situations where the obstacle is not completely in the robot's path, it drives against it full send.
After an obstacle has been detected by driving against it, the robot drives more carefully in the area of the position on the next loop. However, this realization can also be forgotten and the robot drives against it again at full speed.
I can't see any logic in the system used to process a room. Sometimes it travels the same path 3, 5, 7 times. It also runs along some edge areas several times. When it is in edge mode, 90% of the edges are scanned in small steps with the bumper, which is very slow. My other robots recognize the edge with the side sensors and run it smoothly. As a result, the eufy takes at least 30% longer and I think it sometimes gets bogged down.
Apperantly the Eufy cannot remember the location of the charging station. Sometimes it took 15 minutes to find the charging station that was 3 meters away because it turned off in the wrong direction and then wandered around in circles in another room.

Here's what we're seeing is the most popular for Memorial Day on Amazon
Reviewed has been keeping an eye on consumer trends for years, and we're constantly shocked about what makes the top-5 purchases for holidays like Memorial Day. As of right now, here are the five most popular products we're seeing today from Amazon traffic:
https://preview.redd.it/7vuvoa7xkz2d1.png?width=220&format=png&auto=webp&s=8bfa63a24337e6f64a13048aac7927bba5b520bb

Apple AirPods Pro (2nd Gen) with USB-C
On sale for $189.99, a savings of $60 The AirPods Pro (2nd generation) offer significant upgrades over their popular predecessors, with improvements to noise canceling, sound, and battery life, all in the same, sleek design. If you own an iPhone and you can afford the AirPods Pro, it’s time to upgrade—only Sony’s WF-1000XM5 beats them.
The AirPod’s adaptive transparency mode also is impressive, clearer and more natural sounding. It can also help protect your hearing from unwanted environmental blasts by attenuating incoming sounds to 85dB in real time, according to Apple. (These are not intended for hearing protection, though, so please still use proper ear protection when necessary.)
Apple has a recipe for success with the AirPods, with improved bass response, a clearer and more fine-tuned stereo spacing, fantastic call quality, and a barely-there 5.4-gram weight. And while the design hasn’t changed much, the new case does add a speaker system so you can find it in your house, precision tracking in the Find My app, and an update in September 2023 changed the charging port from Lightning to USB-C.
While the battery life is solid, it could be better. We wish there was more control over audio such as an EQ and ANC control. There’s also no separate app for Android. None of those complaints are deal-breakers, though. Read Our Review

Shark NV352 Navigator Lift-Away
On sale for $169.99, a savings of $30 When it comes to value, it’s hard to beat a Shark vacuum cleaner. The Shark Navigator Lift-Away NV352 is a prime example. During our cleaning tests, the Navigator picked up 38% of the testing dirt off our lab’s carpets. Vacuums that clean more than 33% get a thumbs up from us.
This Shark also boasts a swivel joint in the brush head, which allows it to pivot around corners, furniture, and other obstacles. When you combine this nimble upright with its small brush head, it can more easily reach tight spaces.
And for stairs and cleaning atop furniture, we need to mention this Lift-Away feature: Users can detach the motor from the handle to create a wheel-less canister. You can’t use attachments in this mode, which is a major downside, but we think it’s a good trade-off for certain scenarios. Read Our Review

Dolphin Premier Robotic Pool Cleaner
On sale for $1324, a savings of $423 The Dolphin Premier self-propelled robotic pool cleaner will make pool owners happy with its 60-foot hose length, single-button operation, and multiple filter options. It promises exceptional cleaning power, with cartridges for ultra-fine filtration (for bacteria and such), tiny debris, and even fallen leaves.
The Dolphin Premier climbs walls and delivers waterline cleaning.
Its weekly scheduled cleaning cycle cleans a 50-foot pool in about three hours (or 90 minutes for a round pool half that size). An optional remote control improves the experience, and an indicator light lets you know when the filter cartridge is full.
These advanced features combine to make one of the best pool vacuum robots for most people. Read Our Review

2024.05.27 17:20 LifeSportz League Wont Open/ Rune Changes Before Game Launches/SIPT Error/Post Game Screen Does Show Up (Broken Client)

This bug has been happening for the past week or two. It is so game breaking. I use the same champion most games and the same rune page. When I start the game my runes change automatically. Sometimes when i load into the game it doesn't even show my runes on the pre game screen. I am not using any game apps. I have been getting this " Failed to receive SIPT Error as well multiple times a day for about a couple weeks now. I cant even enjoy they game. the client is so broken. I re-installed the game. I used the hextect repair kit and nothing is working. The only way around the rune changing glitch is during champ select I have to click on the rune page, change one thing and change it back and save. I should not have to adjust my runes every game to use them. I attached a picture of the pre game screen. During champion select, after i choose my champion and my rune page. It's a 50% chance my runes will default to arcane comet. I can have my rune page select but it will change automatically. Again, I dont use no apps to change my runes. the game is just broken and i cannot fine anything online about it. I will send a picture from op.gg. When the glitch happens you will see arcane comet as the first rune and the second rune is always nothing. Please. I spent so much money on this game and the client has been so broken so multiple weeks now. I do not want a robot response. Again, I re-installed, and i also use the repair tool u guys have. Nothing worked. Also, Since all of this has been happening, It takes sometimes 5 minutes just to load the client up. I updated my drivers and everything. Usually after matches I have to skip the results because it doesnt load after the match. I do not know what happen. But starting multiple weeks ago, I have had a lot of bugs in my client and it makes the game unplayable or i have to wait a long time for stuff. The worst is my runes being changed when I one trick a champion. It could be the new van guard system because ever since the patch my game has been broken. It happened again. I only have 1 rune page. and before the match starts my runes get changed every time. It is causing me to lose game and its so frustrating. Please i need a fix ASAP

2024.05.27 17:02 PsychologicalMix7435 Made a obstacle avoiding robot

An obstacle-avoiding robot built with Arduino utilizes ultrasonic sensors to detect obstacles in its path. Through programmed logic on the Arduino microcontroller, the robot interprets sensor data to determine the presence and proximity of obstacles. When an obstacle is detected within a certain range, the Arduino sends commands to motor drivers, instructing the robot to stop, reverse, or change direction accordingly. This continuous feedback loop allows the robot to navigate its environment autonomously, avoiding obstacles while moving towards its destination. Click here for information.

2024.05.27 14:08 ckaeel Anxiety and lack of confidence when driving - when the too much (pseudo)safety makes the drivers stupid and unpredictable

Just to remember, whenever you drive you are in control of a large mass which could bring a lot of destruction in its path. It's your responsibility to make sure it will never happen (though there are only two certain things in live: "death and taxes" [Benjamin Franklin]).
Like anything else in life, learning to drive and improving your skills requires repeated practice. Each day presents new situations from which you can learn even more. If you remain isolated and avoid these experiences, you won't have the opportunity to develop and refine your driving abilities. To become a confident driver, you must expose yourself to the sometimes chaotic nature of traffic, despite how intimidating it may seem.
Before continuing, I'll make two statements which should be written in stone:
One issue discussed on this Reddit is how to manage the stress that comes with tailgaters ? Some dumb, pre-programed robots with human shape will bring in discussion: "pull to the side of the road, or turn off at a petrol station, but only if it is safe to do so" forgetting that is an "advice" and NOT a LAW. Furthermore it says: "keep a steady speed so they may overtake. Alternatively,[...] pull to the side of the road, or turn off at a petrol station, but only if it is safe to do so". As we can see the advice states very clearly that it depends on the context, your main obligation as a driver remains to KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD.
Then, the context depends on the type of tailgaters and we can group them in two categories:
Note: a little about human psychology. People who have nothing to loose are the most dangerous, BUT the majority of people (some of our tailgaters) have something to loose: their precious car, family, children, house, job, their quiet life, life in general: they may bark, but they don't bite.
a) Whenever you meet these drivers be happy: if you think your driving skills suck, you are not alone. There is at least another person behind you and it's even worse than you.
!REMEMBER!: the road is shared with others: it could be a slow car, a horse, a cyclist, a tractor, maybe something left on the road, etc. ANY driver should be capable to overtake another vehicle, or whatever object is on the road. Even a "racer boy" will get in front of you whenever he has the opportunity.
The only logical explanation for a "tailgater" avoiding to overtake when it's possible is pure STUPIDITY: "think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that" [George Carlin]
b) You should view having a tailgater behind you as a positive opportunity. As mentioned earlier, driving skills are learnt through real-life experiences rather than just books. In this situation, you can learn to stay composed, ignore any stress factors, and focus on the road ahead. Unwittingly, these tailgaters become your personal trainers.
There are 50 million drivers in UK (pretty much everyone above 18yrs old has a driving licence). If you can't cope with the fact that someone will eventually drive behind you, and you find yourself constantly looking in the mirror instead of paying attention to the road ahead, then it's better not to drive at all. At this stage, you are not ready, and you could become a danger to yourself and others because you won't be able to make quick and proper decisions.
... but there is a solution and its name is continuous training.
!REMEMBER!:
PS: I hate Reddit formatting.

2024.05.27 13:41 Internalllscream How do i place a switch between a battery and a motor driver

So the first image is the circuit. For reference i am making a line follower robot so the motors r supposed to be on 0 rpm unless a black line is detected by the 3 sensors on the right, so im aware its not supposed to work on tinker cad anyways. However i need to put in a switch but its not working for some reason. The second image is how i did it so i basically just placed the switch between the motor driver and the battery. Now when the switch is off its fine, but when i turn it on it gives me the error message in image 3. How do i fix it?

Professional Interest
First Prev
Carbon was just about to say something, probably to the tune of ‘we need to stay focused on the problem at hand’ when Alex spotted what was obviously a Human made dispenser tucked away in the corner, the screen all lit up and operational.
“Oh shit, is that Berkmann?” He departed from the group and made a beeline for it - as much as he could with all the furniture and strategically placed planters in the way. Sure enough, it was a Berkmann. One of the higher end dispenser manufacturers, their units started at a full meter wide and twice as tall, making them unusually large. The extra space was actually used for a larger, self-calibrating forge matrix and more matter injectors. The other hallmark was the dark blue color with a faint hint of green, in a striking translucent gloss finish that gave it an internal glow from the overhead lights.
This one a bit scuffed and dented, and an older model, but obviously functional. Yes, it was weird that it was here, but he wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity to use a Berkmann. Someone had just made a chicken marsala, the scent of it still heavy in the air despite the door to the print area being sealed tight, so it must have been in great shape mechanically.
He tapped in a quick order. Just a cup of coffee. The screen was nice, real finished glass that felt like paper under his fingertip... Which just sort of encouraged him to dial through the selection for a couple extra seconds to make it a caffe macchiato. Today felt like it was going to take forever, so why not get started with espresso now? His finger hovered over the start button as he glanced over his shoulder, not wanting to be rude. “Anybody else want something?”
Carbon sighed, somewhat resigned to this being how he was. She also likely saw that they were at the start of a very long process, and not something to flip a switch and fix.
“Actually, you know what, hang on.” he tapped through the screens and added to the order - another feature generally only found in high end dispensers, this one could make several things at a time, before hitting start. “This will only take a minute.”
The Berkmann hummed, an accurate progress bar filling at an impressive rate compared to how the unit in his childhood home had managed to turn out beverages - a single cup of coffee would have taken nearly as long as this entire order. It played an elegant series of chimes and the door slid open, the dense scent of espresso wafting out. A single tiny cup of coffee and a pair of champagne flutes sat inside.
Alex picked up the stemware first, turning to hand one to Carbon, flaunting as charismatic a smile as he could muster. “We were just talking about them, and I know this thing will make a good one.”
“A Mimosa?” Carbon inquired, with yet another sigh. She still took it, shaking her head with the faintest hint of a smile, eyes rolling in as affectionate a manner as one could imagine.
“Exactly.” He extended the other to Eleya. He didn’t trust her, no. But he did need her and the technological prowess of the Empire, so he’d schmooze a little bit. “It’s orange juice and Champagne, probably a little weak compared to what I’ve seen you drinking, but it is still before noon.”
Eleya took the orange concoction, looked into the flute and held it out to one of her guards. The wavering form stepped up to it, hovering over it for roughly the time it took to run a scan on consumables, then stepped away. Eleya gave it a sip and made a quiet comment.
Carbon picked it up for him. “Interesting, and yes, very soft.”
He gave her a little nod, picked his tiny cup - scarcely more than a shot glass - out of the machine and gestured towards the stairs. “Shall we be on our way?”
“We should.” Carbon walked over and slipped her empty flute to the recycler slot on the side of the Berkmann before heading towards the stairs.
He hadn’t even seen her drinking any of it. “So what’d you think?” He asked, picking up the pace for a few steps to catch up.
“The light alcohol and bright taste would lend itself well to breakfast- ah, brunch?” She replied quietly, trying to keep their conversation between them despite the whole entourage they’d picked up. “It was also very sweet.”
Alex turned his head just a little towards her, half a grin hidden from view. “So just like me?”
She hadn’t been expecting a reply like that, and it got a laugh out of her that she quickly tried to hide in a scoff, her ears flattening and then rising back to a relaxed posture. “Sometimes.” Carbon said, a little smirk crushed as flat as she could manage as she stopped before a plain door and hit the button to request access.
It was basically just a doorbell. A muffled reply came from within and the door opened into an expansive office. The walls lined with shelving save for nearly floor to ceiling windows looking out over the common area. A nice desk, repeating that dark wood and silver metal motif that seemed prevalent, faced the windows. There was still ample room for a conference table of similar design that sat eight. The owner of the office was crouched over in a corner and rooting around in a drawer built into the wall, a pile of small boxes on the floor beside him. He didn’t look up, speaking to them in an old but energetic voice and waving a graying hand at the table.
Eleya took the seat at the head of the table, of course. Carbon in the next seat to her right, and then Alex beyond that, setting his macchiato on the table next to the bundle containing his powered-down translator. All the Guard stood close at hand, their numbers split between inside and outside the office.
Alex sipped the foam off his coffee and glanced over his shoulder, the guy they were there to meet still looking for something. He was dressed in what Alex had come to think of as normal clothes for the Tsla’o, his jacket blood red and not sporting a particularly wide cut neck. Alex leaned over to Carbon, keeping his voice down as they had outside. “Alright, so who is...”
He petered off as he noticed that several banks of the shelves had been set up like a curio display, and smack dab in the middle of one was a model of the Apollo spacecraft sitting among Tsla’o items. Not just the Lunar Module, like everyone has, no. It was the LM attached to the Command and Service Module, like it would have been on the outward bound leg of the trip to the moon. It floated, whether on magnets or some tiny antigravity device was unclear, above a little display base that stated it was the Apollo 11 flight.
A few shelves down there was a signed baseball, and a maneki-neko that had seen better days. Come to think of it, the potted plants that sat on either side of the window were both Monstera.
All of the plants in the common room had been from Earth, too. Palms, mostly, dark green and providing a nice screen to break the area up, and the broad, striped leaves of snake plants. Some sort of vines he didn’t recognize off the top of his head as well. There was an arrangement of cacti in a shallow dish sitting in the middle of the conference table.
Carbon elbowed him in the arm, eyebrows raised.
“Oh, sorry, uh... Surprised by how much Human stuff is in here.” He gestured at the cacti. “Unless Schoen has plants like these too.”
“Those are from the desert, correct? They had them as decoration in The Mothership.” She leaned over, inspecting miniature representations of their respective species. “We have something similar, yes, but none with spines I am aware of.”
“I’m pretty sure all the plants here are from Earth. It’s a little weird.” He almost continued, but the guy who’s office they were monopolizing joined them with an armload of old equipment, laying everything out in a neat row on the far side of the table before sitting down.
Some of the stuff Alex recognized, to a certain extent. A wireless power cable, for instance, was pretty obvious - it was just a cable with a node to get power from a wireless source, usually used when converting from battery power or a traditional wired plug. The very old, gray male plugged that into a box Alex did not recognize at all, a series of lights coming on before he plugged a headset into it and held it out to Alex.
It was designed for Humans, at least. A very straightforward single-sided unit with a very conventional looking earpad over the speaker, a slender arm holding the microphone just next to his mouth after he slipped it on.
The fellow who’s name Alex still did not know spoke, rapid and excited Tsla turning into perfectly understandable, if not a bit digitized, English. “Does it still work? If it does not we may have to rely on less expeditious methods of translation.”
“Yeah, I would say it does.” He hadn’t done it in awhile, but he cleaned up his speech to avoid contractions. This thing was old, it probably wouldn’t handle them as well as a modern translator. In turn, Alex’s reply was broadcast in Tsla from a small speaker on top of the box. “And uh, who are you?”
“Dena Amara, Administrator of Xenotechnology Resource Integration. At your service.” He positively beamed, grinning from ear to ear. “This is one of the translators from the first formal meeting of our races, I could not be more happy to see it still works.”
The translator did little to convey his visually obvious enthusiasm, but Alex was picking up on that. “Glad to meet you. Have you been made aware of the situation?” It took him a second to process that the Xeno in Amara’s statement meant alien to them, not to him. Explained all the Human stuff, but now how he’d gotten ahold of it.
“Only what the Empress has told me. I suspect there is more?” He said, silver fur glittering in the bright overhead light as he leaned in towards Alex. Dena was, based on how much his fur color had changed, much older than Eleya. Probably older than the Colonel, as well.
Alex launched into a rehash of the explanation he’d given Eleya when they arrived. The Administrator nodded along, and Carbon verified the translation was accurate to what he’d said before.
“That is an interesting chain of events. I am not sure about how much help we could offer.” Amara picked through his words carefully. He had his gaze directed towards Eleya the entire time, not wanting to overstep what he was actually allowed to talk about.
The Empress had spent this entire exchange leaning back in her chair, one arm crossed over her lap, still holding the champagne flute in the other. About half done with her drink so far, she took another sip before giving him a little nod. “Do not feel restrained, Administrator. He is seen and trusted, and in turn he trusts us.”
Amara grinned again, excitement back in his gray eyes as he looked at Alex. “As that is cleared up, I believe we can be of some help. The scans of your hardware have been instrumental in accelerating the development of our own machine-brain interfaces. It is fortunate that we have begun work on an implantation suite already. It is not prepared for an actual surgery, but one of the arms has been set up with a PIN driver already - more than enough to take a look at your diagnostics.”
The industrious nature of the Tsla’o had consistently impressed Alex so far - it’d been a couple of days since they had scanned him, and they were already setting up a surgical suite. Getting the hardware setup was easy enough from a scan, but the software side would be more onerous, no doubt. They might have been able to pull some of it from operational RAM, but likely not the whole operating system thanks to encryption. “Keyed PIN?”
“Keyed?” He asked, eyes searching as he tried to figure out what Alex meant. “We had noticed that the access points associated with your internal implant had randomized, recessed contacts. They are intentionally scrambled?”
The Physical Interface Needle was the only way to gain access to the implants, without popping his skull open. It was a tiny little needle, a couple of centimeters long and if his memory served, a whopping 30 gauge. Almost impossible for even the most steady living hand to install, and that was just the plain version. “Yeah, the keyed variants have subsections that need to be rotated into place after the zero pin makes contact. Standard on Amps, but not the Whisper or any of the wireless points.”
“Oh! We have been wondering about that. So, we do not have a Keyed PIN yet, but I believe we should be able to fabricate them with this information. While that is underway, we could begin diagnostics on your other systems we do have PIN’s for.”
“You’ll need a driver that can actuate the keyed sections, as well.” Alex really didn’t want to do this. He wanted to just... He wanted to go home, but a glance over at a surprisingly nervous looking Carbon reminded him that she already felt like an integral part of what home meant to him now, marriage or not. “Maybe you could help them with that while they sort out some of the other systems? I can’t think of anyone I’d rather have working on things that are going to be poking around near my brain.”
“I could, yes.” She gave him a resolute nod, a bit of direction getting those nerves cleared up a little already.
“Alright, great.” He smiled, for her alone, before turning his attention to the jacket bundle. He unfolded it, the machine sitting inert within. “Do we have someone who can take a look at my external? Would be nice to have it back, if it’s not part of the problem.”
“Of course, dear nephew.” Eleya’s reply came first, as she gestured for one of her Guard to retrieve it. The vague form walked over and folded it back up, the entire package disappearing when lifted off the table. “It was given a quick scan at dinner the other night and came back clean, but I will turn my intelligence apparatus loose upon it this time.”
Alex was sure he was never going to get used to cloaked people doing things around him. Or being related to someone who could order an intelligence agency to do their bidding, for that matter. “Thank you. Shall we get this show on the- should we get started?”
Everyone else agreed. Eleya downed the rest of her Mimosa and left with her Guard. Alex did the same with his coffee, then Amara escorted them over to the surgical suite.
“He says he wants it to be clear that this is still early in the conversion of this lab room into a surgical facility.” Carbon translated for Alex again, the 60 year old translator unable to run without the cable sitting on a power-enabled surface, and thus useless on the trip over.
“What’s that supposed to-” The doors opened and the room inside was alive with activity. The far wall was covered with racks of servers, and U shaped ring of workstations set up around the center of the room, nearly all of them currently occupied. Amara gestured for them to follow and lead them around to the open end.
It was a surgical bed in the most strict sense of the term. Literally just a flat surface with some padding on top, and a padded hole to rest your face in at the far end. Not so much as a sheet or surgical drape present. Above it they had bolted a half-dozen robotic surgical arms to the ceiling, with an admittedly impressive looking sensor array centered above where the head would go.
“It’s like something you’d put in a haunted house. All it’s missing is the pools of blood and a guy with a chainsaw.” He was pretty sure that he spoke low enough that only Carbon, standing immediately next to him, could hear.
Administrator Amara was still jazzed about this entire endeavor. His smile was just a little bit too wide to be charismatic, but it was very eager. He said something Alex didn’t recognize any of.
Carbon exhaled through her teeth, eyebrows raised as she glanced over to Alex. “He asked you to take your shirt off and lay face down on the table.”

Chapter 90! Oh man this guy is a little bit too excited to get a live victim test subject patient into the machine. Eleya seems to trust him, at least.
Also, has anybody noticed where I messed up? Not in this chapter, but in a more plot-continuity way? Figuring out a fix, shouldn't be too hard, but it was such a forehead slapping moment that I had to ask - it's been a ton of chapters though.

2024.05.27 02:52 nosnoopin My aunt was taken for everything she had. Over $40,000 gone. They have all of her personal information, and some family information. Where do we go from here?

I’m in need of some advice, and I’m hoping this post can gain some traction so I can get as much suggestion/help as possible. I’m sorry in advance for the long post, but there’s just so many details.
Some backstory: My aunt is intellectually disabled: she’s a pretty functional adult, but she’s extremely emotionally immature and she’s just a lower IQ person in general. She has a full time job as a home aid for the disabled elderly and has lived with my parents for about 15 years. She cannot function by herself nor makes enough money to live alone. She’s had a hard life - between an abusive ex-husband, sexual abuse and bullying. She has not had male love/attention in her life since she got divorced 15 years ago. Dating isn’t an easy option because of her intellectual disability and her obesity.
I’m not sure when the scam started or how it originated. But I believe it was around a year ago. She had just won a settlement, I don’t have many details on that, but it was something like $30-40,000. The first person to find out about the scam was my mother. My aunt brought up that she was seeing somebody. She told my mother that it was a Turkish actor, but refused to give his name because he told my aunt that his identity needed to stay secret between the two of them. My mother knew immediately it was a scam and tried to let her know, but my aunt wouldn’t listen and assured my mother that was not what is seemed. My mother tried to talk to her a few times after the initial conversation but my aunt by this point was CONVINCED this man was the real deal. She showed my mom a voicemail that sounded almost robotic? With a thick, non-Turkish accent.
Fast forward a month and my aunt called my mother crying, saying she couldn’t make the rent (she pays a very small amount of rent to my mother for living there) my mother proceeded to ask her why she had no money, considering she just got such a large settlement. I guess my aunt got defensive, and said she no longer had it and tried to avoid the question, but she eventually confessed to my mother that she had given $12,000 to her Turkish boyfriend because he was in a desperate situation and was going to lose his home. She wouldn’t disclose to my mother where the rest of the money went, but I’m going to have to guess she was lying a bit about the numbers.. and it all went to him. She claimed that he was paying her back, and had already given her $100.
My mother has a lot of very young children, and a full time job. She also takes care of her elderly mother with dementia alone, and part of that is because her sister (my aunt) refuses to help with their mother. My mother is not exactly willing to help my aunt, there has also been a lot of in-family fighting between the two. So despite this shocking discovery, my mother did absolutely NOTHING with the situation at this point. All she did was yell at my aunt, causing my aunt to get defensive and tell my mother that all my mother wanted to do was to “ruin her happiness”.
I found out about the scam only last month when my mom mentioned it in passing. I was a confused and wondered why no one in the family seemed to know about this as it seemed like a huge deal! Her $40,000 settlement was GONE. I tried talking to my aunt about it but she was unwilling to talk to me and said she was too busy. I live out of state so it’s hard to get in contact with her, especially since she didn’t want to talk about the situation. I continuously grew more concerned, and it really peaked when we found out that she was looking for her passport for an undisclosed reason.
Three days ago, my husband received a text from her. It said: “hey insert husbands name here, I have a friend who needs chemotherapy, and needs to pay for it upfront. Do you know where I can send him to get some money?”
My husband texted her back and said “Hey Aunt name, Let’s talk a little later on the phone, I have a long drive and we can discuss this”
She responded: “I’m so sorry - that was for my Pastor with the same name. Please don’t tell anybody about this.”
My obviously concerned husband let me know immediately. We took a trip to visit home for 2 days. she wasn’t willing to talk to anyone else, but my husband was able to sit down with her and get all the details. So here’s the story:
She claimed that she knew he was real. That she loves him and he loves her. They’re in a serious relationship. Apparently, she’s told a few people about this man, and all of them have told her that it’s a scam. She said “ everybody thinks I’m crazy, and they’re trying to make me unhappy”. (This is where her emotional immaturity shows. She seems to think everyone just doesn’t want her to be happy.) She told my husband that this man’s cancer was “basically terminal” he was in the hospital and he needed chemo. She said that she had talked to “both his doctor and security guard” and they confirmed this supposed cancer. She said she could NOT let him die and she needed to get him the money immediately. She told my husband that she promised that she would sell her car in order to get the money for his chemo, and she was working on selling it currently. This is the last thing she has. Her bank accounts are drained. She barely makes ends meet and hasn’t paid rent to my mother in two months. She has thousands of dollars in credit card debt. Financially, she’s falling apart.
My husband begged and pleaded with her, he told her it wasn’t real. But when that didn’t work, he decided to play a different game. He promised her that if this man could prove that he is who he says he is, and he really needs chemotherapy, that he will help pay. This is a gamble my husband was obviously willing to make because he knew for a fact that this man is not who he says he is. So he instructed my aunt to let the “boyfriend” know that he would help pay for the chemo if this man would call him and talk to him on the phone. At first, she protested. She said she didn’t want to make the boyfriend angry because he lashes out and curses her out and gets very upset with her. But she eventually caved and asked him.
He responded immediately, and said that there was “no time” to talk to my husband, and he needed the money right away or else he was going to die. He had the “doctor” text her how serious it was he referred to scammer as my aunts “husband”. My aunt has not mentioned him being her husband, so I’m not sure what’s going on with that. Luckily, but not so lucky, my aunt has absolutely no money left so she couldn’t send anything immediately.
There were a few other details in the story that obviously didn’t add up, so my husband pointed them out, but there were ALWAYS excuses. Here are the main points:
1.) Turkish healthcare is free, meaning that if he needed chemotherapy, he would get it at no cost. The excuse for that was: “he has a private doctor that he goes to, so they have to charge him upfront”
2.) this man claims to have four security guards. My husband brought up the point that security guards need to be paid and he wouldn’t just have them for free, So how can he afford them if he’s struggling so bad?” The excuse was that they’re his friends so they work for free.
3.) My husband told my aunt to ask for a picture of him inside inside the hospital. She told him that she’s never seen a picture of his face outside the internet. Ever. She says that she’s asked him to send one multiple times, but he refuses because he’s a private person. This just shows you how deep my aunt is. Even though this man refuses to send her a picture of his face, she was still so desperate to convince herself that this was real.
4.) The communication from the “doctor” and “security guard” is only over text.
5.) If he’s a big Turkish actor like he claims why does he have no money? Apparently they said he got scammed. Bunch of sickos.
6.) She was told that the cancer was in the abdomen, but the “doctor” he is working with is a neurologist in real life. My husband was able to look him up as they gave the name of a real doctor.
Apparently my aunt started crying towards the end of the conversation, she said “what if he’s not lying and he dies? It would be my fault.” She said she couldn’t talk anymore about it. She was sobbing. My husband assured her again that all the man had to do was prove he was real, and he wanted to help.
My husband has been talking to my aunt almost all day for the past couple of days. He’s been playing his cards carefully, and convincing her he will help with this financial situation. She slowly started showing signs of doubt. She believed that if he wouldn’t talk to us, this couldn’t possibly be real. So she finally convinced her “boyfriend” to talk to my husband.
Long story short, we got a whole run around via WhatsApp on why this man was unable to talk to my husband on the phone. His “security guard” was texting us. My husband pretended to be ignorant, and said how much he wanted to send the money - but he just really wanted to handle it over the phone. Finally, he got a call. The man clearly had an Indian accent. I was recording the call, and my husband asked if he could pay for the chemotherapy with Apple gift cards. The security guard said the hospital could accept gift cards, but they prefer steam gift cards (lmao). This was all the evidence we needed. My aunt may be naïve, but she’s not completely stupid and she knew this wasn’t right.
It’s been devastating ever since. My poor aunt is broken. She keeps telling us she wants to die, and she has nothing left. She can’t talk about it more than 5 minutes at a time without sobbing uncontrollably. It’s heartbreaking. We don’t even know what to say to her besides the fact that it’s going to be okay. But honestly, I’m not sure if she’s ever going to escape this. The more my aunt tells us, the worse the situation seems, and the less likely it seems that she’s going to be able to have a quiet life.
She’s now told us that they have everything. She gave them her Social Security card, her passport, her credit card numbers, copies of her W2’s, her home address (my parents address, which is the home of many young children) her drivers license. Literally a scammers dream. She lost EVERYTHING. She said she hasn’t looked at her credit cards yet, but I’m guessing it will be bad.
We’re doing our best to help her. We are immediately signing her up for an identity theft program. But what else can we do? How can we prevent this from following her the rest of her life? She already says that she’s tempted to text them again. I’m scared if we leave her alone for too long she’s going to get roped back in with some crazy sob story. She wants to believe this is real and I’m worried she’ll trauma block reality. I think even though she knows that they’re scammers, she still feels heartbroken over this persona of a man that doesn’t exist. I just don’t know what to do. Thanks for reading - Any advice is appreciated.

No Silver Parasol Website:
Hey everyone, I wanted to make a post to officially clear up the confusion about this mysterious “Silver Parasol Games” website. It caught me off guard today, and there were a lot of details I didn’t understand (like why a guy in Pakistan had the logo and had a website created using it), but I think I have a good handle of what happened here.
When we were making the game (myself and Steel Wool), I thought it would be fun to have a logo for the mysterious “other game developer” mentioned in the game, so I had a logo created for it. At the time, I had plans to even go as far as making a whole website for them, but then decided against it. After all, there is a fine line between crafting an in-game story and just outwardly lying about something. I didn’t want to cross that line. I decided against creating a website, but decided to leave the logo in the game (since it was in-game after all.)
After doing a little more research today, it turns out that a graphic designer had actually thrown together a mock-page for it already and put it up on his personal graphic design page. EDIT: This was one of the designers working for the company who was going to design the website for me before I cancelled the project; that's how he got the logo.
And yes, that’s my personal phone number. I’m honestly not sure why that number would have been on that page in the first place. All I can do is ask for everyone to respect my privacy. My number has actually already been out there for a few months; I’d donated to someone’s school online fundraising page a while back and got doxed using my donation info shortly after. :P So, I guess it was about to time to get a new phone number anyway! Until then, just be aware I won’t be answering any calls from unknown numbers.
So yeah, this was done with good intentions as a fun in-game Easter egg, but then ended up causing a bit of trouble it seems. Sorry for the confusion.
EDIT 2: I want to call attention to the fact that ever since I made this post several hours ago, I haven't received a single new phone call (other than the few numbers who kept calling over and over and I had to block). That's a real testament to this community. I've been really amazed by it. I'll obviously still be changing my number in the morning, but you have all really impressed me today. I wanted to make sure I said it. Thank you.

Showtime:
Hey everyone, just wanted to comment on a couple of things: Showtime, and the mysterious "secret images."
Showtime was left out of the game because it didn't feel right. It's not that it was unfinished, necessarily. There may be some bits and pieces floating around of incomplete versions; but there was, in fact, a completed version. I made the call to leave it out, though. It's one of those things that needs to feel 110% to me, and that may or may not ever happen.
About the secret images; Aaron Fetcher himself, the creator of Showbiz Pizza, was nice enough to take those pictures for me, specifically for this project. I had wanted some cool images of animatronics parts and went straight to him for them. However, I removed them when people traced them back to Showbiz Pizza (I'd hoped they were obscure enough to not be so easily identified). I obviously didn't want to connect the two and make people think that Freddy's was based on Showbiz (that's also why I didn't include his name). I loved Showbiz Pizza, and Aaron Fetcher has been terrific every time I've gotten to talk to him. I just didn't want to send any negative attention his way, so I deleted the pictures.
I hope that clears things up. :)

Actual Lore:
Hey everyone!
So, I received an email from a reddit member yesterday asking me to clarify something specific about the lore of Help Wanted. He was very polite and respectful with his question, which I appreciate, and I know it’s something that more than a few other users were confused about as well.
So here I am to set the record straight! (and probably create more confusion in the process)
The question is this: Is Scott Cawthon now a part of FNAF lore? The short answer is: No. My name is never actually mentioned in the game. The game says that an indie developer was tarnishing the brand of Fazbear Entertainment by making video games about them, forcing them to rebrand and try to reclaim their good name by making a VR game that made light of those crazy stories. (Or was it all part of the plan?) Yes, I used my own picture for this indie developer because it’s an obvious parallel, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s actually me in-universe.
On the surface, this might seem like an odd choice for a storyline in general, but there was a very, very specific challenge while making Help Wanted. The challenge was this: How do you take characters that are canon, along with characters that are questionably canon, and characters from every point of the timeline, and throw them ALL together in one game that IS canon? That’s quite the problem when you think about it. But it was important for me that Help Wanted mean something; I didn’t want just a meaningless collection of mini-games, although I’m sure most people would have been okay with that. I wanted it to be canon, and that meant that I needed to solve the substantial puzzle of how. Now that you all know the problem, maybe you can understand my approach. That doesn’t mean you have to agree that it was a good idea (I keep a bowl of candy out for people who show up with torches and pitchforks at my front door.)
So no, I’m not canon, Freddit isn’t canon, the fangames aren’t canon, YOU aren’t canon. Only the existence of a game developer that supposedly made video games based on actual events that may or may not be a cover up by Fazbear Entertainment is canon.
Along these same lines, keep in mind that I DO tend to use pictures of me and my family in the games just because they are so readily available. My little boy, Jason, is the face of “The one you should not have killed” in UCN. I’ll share the original sometime; he looks sweet as an angel in the original picture and I turned him into a monster! In FNAF4, I used a picture of a mountain range that I took while I was a truck driver in West Texas. I used a picture of a snowman that me and my older sons made together. I used a picture of a pet Mockingbird that we nursed back to health one year. Do these have lore significance? Well, you probably already know the answer.
Again, this doesn't mean you have to agree with any of it. I'm always available for a good roasting (and I sometimes deserve it), although I will say that I appreciate the fandom being polite about it, which everyone usually is. :)
I hope this makes things clear as mud for everyone. Expect a new teaser shortly!

Dark Springtrap is canon:
Here is a funny story. When I went to visit Skylar about a month ago, I took several POP figures for him in a bag, and I quizzed him to see how fast he could name the characters when I pulled them out. I brought several lesser known characters and thought I'd stump him a few times but never could. The last one in the bag was Dark Springtrap, arguably the most obscure character in the franchise, with doubts that he even exists as a character at all. I thought to myself... I've got him, because NO ONE knows this character! I pulled the toy from the bag and Skylar was like "Dark Springtrap", without missing a beat. The kid knew his fnaf. ;)

Is the story Solvable:
I’ve enjoyed the memes roasting me about the plot-line lately, but it does have a serious underlying concern from many in the community, and I hear you. The question is this; is the lore solvable?
Since that’s kind of like asking Is the story complete, in an ongoing story, it’s difficult to answer. So, let me say this instead. Over the next few years there are a lot of projects planned, and most are very story driven. Lots of the later stories will answer some of the biggest questions from the fan base over this past year, in my opinion.
Very few people will likely ever feel completely satisfied, as there are just too many head canons out there and so many great ideas on where the story could go, but I think there are good things to be found for people who are looking. All I can do is say that some questions will be answered; even if it may not always be the answer you wanted. Be patient. Let me at least say this; future games will look forward; but look to the novels to fill in some of blanks to the past!
Everyone in the community has been really great, and I’m working hard to bring you some great things in 2020 and beyond! :)
To answer your question, yes, I'm referring to the new Fazbear Frights series! :)
Just a note about the story. : fivenightsatfreddys (reddit.com)

No Patrick, the Kazoo isn't intentional:
Okay, raise your hands if you think I'd let Cloak reveal lore using a Kazoo. Never mind, don't answer that; it sounds just dumb enough to work.
But seriously, I can't tell you how many designs I've rejected because companies randomly throw around names from the lore. I'm pretty confident that I rejected this as well, or I guess there is a chance it just slipped through the cracks. Either way, get it while you can, cause I'm pulling it!

FNAF Movie History:
Hi everyone.
Before we get to the bad news concerning the state of the Five Nights at Freddy's movie, I wanted to share a brief history of the FNAF screenplay. It's been a long road, so let's take a look at some of the screenplays that have come and gone over the years, in no particular order. (Or, feel free to skip to the end really quick to see the bad news, and then come back and enjoy the list!) ;)
Some of these came from big studios, some from big directors, some from me, and some from other hired writers. I gave the screenplays a name, and I'll include a brief synopsis, as well as what ultimately led to each screenplay being rejected.
Let's get started!
The "F" screenplay
Basic Setup: Group of teenage trouble-makers break into Freddy's; chaos ensues
Problems: Although a pretty basic setup, there were a lot of odd choices here, which only got weirder as the story continued. The story ended with our protagonists in a secret underground animatronic factory that was designing robots for the government. -___-
Verdict: WT@#$@ Strayed way too far from source material! Tossed.
The "Plushies Take Manhattan" screenplay
Basic Setup: Plushies take Manhattan.
Problems: Plushies took Manhattan
Verdict: Burned with fire.
The "Random Charlie" screenplay
Basic Setup: Charlie and friends sneak into Freddy's after-hours to retrieve a lost toy.
Problems: Although sharing names of familiar characters from the series, these characters had nothing to do with their game and book counterparts. So, while featuring familiar elements of the games, it seemed too "loosely based" on the game, and lost a lot of its impact because of it.
Verdict: Felt like a random bag of FNAF elements with no real stakes. Meh.
The "Silver Eyes" screenplay(s)
Basic Setup: Kira and I both worked on three versions of a Silver Eyes screenplay over the course of about a year, trying to find the right approach to the story from the first book.
Problems: These were the first attempts I made myself to write a screenplay after realizing it was going to be difficult to find someone else who understood the lore well enough to do it. Unfortunately, it also meant these screenplays suffered greatly from my inexperience at writing. Even Kira, with her writing expertise, couldn't save them.
Verdict: Although these had some good elements, I ultimately decided to focus on making a screenplay from the games and not from the books.
The "Pawn Shop" screenplay
Basic Setup: A kid who watches after a pawn shop finds trouble when an animatronic is brought in. It turns out Freddy's had been robbed, and the animatronics were taken to different locations for sale. The other animatronics come to retrieve the one at the Pawn Shop, and the kid and his friends get roped into adventure.
Problems: A creative approach, but felt a little too much like "a boy and his animatronic". Too much after-school adventure, not enough horror.
Verdict: Seemed like a good idea at the time.
The "Cassidy" screenplay
Basic Setup: Diving deep, this screenplay packed in a lot of lore, following the story of Cassidy.
Problems: Spanning multiple time-periods, following multiple characters, and featuring lore from multiple games, this was pretty saturated, saturated to a fault. It may have been satisfying to the most hardcore fans, but it would have left the majority of people confused and lost. (Hey wait, maybe this WAS the most accurate screenplay...)
Verdict: Ultimately more of a visual encyclopedia than a movie, this just wasn't satisfying, even to me. Out.
The "Misfit Kid" screenplay
Basic Setup: Single Mom brings her kid to a new town; kid finds Freddy's; hilarity ensues.
Problems: One of the problems in creating a modern day story with an old Freddy's setting is finding a way to connect the protagonists to the restaurant, finding a reason for them to be there, and finding a reason for them to stay. The problem here was that the reason for this kid to go to Freddy's and have misadventures was too contrived and too forced.
Verdict: Not a bad setup, but it just didn't work. If I don't care about the characters, then there's a good chance no one else will either. Pass.
(This was going to be THE screenplay for a while because it didn't have any serious flaws. I ultimately just decided it wasn't good enough though.)
The "Ghost Trackers" screenplay
Basic Setup: A group of amateur ghost-trackers sneak into the abandoned Freddy's.
Problems: Although a very common-sense setup for this sort of movie, the problem again arose about how to give these characters a connection to Freddy's itself. What ended up happening was too much of the story went to their own backstories and their own hardships, and it took the spotlight away from the story of Freddy's.
Verdict: A stronger connection between protagonist and Freddy's was needed. Lesson learned.
The "Insane" screenplay
Basic Setup: Another ghost-tracker variation, this one involved the Funtime Animatronics, underground ball-pit tunnels, and a Marionette out for revenge!
Problems: As some other screenplays ventured too far into adventure, this one went too far into action.
Verdict: Too all-over-the-place, with too many characters doing too many things.
The "Mike" screenplay
Basic Setup: Hmmmm. This makes sense. Why didn't I think of this before?
Problems: Actually this is a good mix... it has the best pieces from all the previous screenplays... Not really any problems here. All the right characters, all the right motivations, all the right stakes...
Verdict: Yeah, we're going with this one. It's fun, it's scary, and it has a great central story!
Oh right, so onto the bad news. The bad news is that there won't be any more screenplays to add to this list since we're officially making the "Mike" screenplay.
Filming starts in Spring!!! :D
Bad news about the FNAF movie. :( : fivenightsatfreddys (reddit.com)
Freddybear:
I actually never knew about this!!! That is a pretty special "typo" actually, copy and pasted from a time before Freddy's name was Freddy Fazbear. For a very short time, Freddy's name was going to be Freddybear, and that must have been when I originally typed this. I likely went back and changed other parts of the description but missed this one!

Book Canonicity:
I'm not sure if the email itself was faked or if someone posing as me sent it, but anyone who knows me after all these years should know that this isn't how I would address such a serious topic. So let me take this opportunity to be as clear as possible:
Concerning what people are saying about the canonicity of the books- yes, that is correct.
I hope that clears things up, everyone have a great weekend.
For the doubters : fivenightsatfreddys (reddit.com)
Doug:
Hey everyone, some issues are much easier to address than others, and this is an easy one.
As many of you know, Doug does something in the novelization that seems... out-of-character from the Doug we all knew and loved from the movie. This specific item was deleted from the official transcript months before the book was printed, but maybe I accidentally submitted the wrong version to Scholastic; I'm not sure.
Either way though, just to clear this up: Movie-Doug IS canon. Book-Doug is NOT canon. This is something I will change in future prints.
Concerning Doug. : fivenightsatfreddys (reddit.com)
Talbert Files:
Okay everyone, here my official statement concerning The Talbert Files.
As I said elsewhere, I don't know what The Talbert Files is- I haven't looked at it yet. I never said it was fake, though, despite the emails I'm getting. We are talking about 2017, and that's a long time ago. If it is an unpublished version of The Freddy Files, like everyone says, then it was obviously rejected. Lots of stuff gets rejected. One thing that everyone needs to keep in mind is that a lot of companies that I work with come up with products from time to time that try to fill in the gaps of the lore. They essentially create new lore in trying to create a product. This happens a lot more than you may realize. Almost every time this happens, however, I step in and say- No, don't create lore; just focus on established lore. Even a detail as small as an "EST 1983" on a T-Shirt; I'll say NO, don't include an established date because that confuses the lore. Companies don't realize this; they have good intentions. All of this is to say that yes it's possible that "The Talbert Files" is an old version of The Freddy Files, but if it is, it was obviously rejected. Anytime you see an unpublished book, or unpublished screenplay, or even scrapped merchandise designs, try to keep in mind that a lot of ideas get scrapped because they are simply bad ideas. (I have enough bad ideas on my own; I don't need help.)
The other problem is that I've seen emails supposedly by me that were not written by me. I do sometimes reply to emails, rarely, however the one that I've seen posted on Reddit and one the one sent to me privately by members of this "Talbert group" is a fake. It wasn't written by me; there are too many obvious giveaways.
Please don't harass anyone over this. I think there is a lot of confusion over this obviously, but I don't think anyone has intended to cause problems.
EDIT: Okay, I've been looking through some of The Talbert Files pages. I couldn't find any downloadable versions but I watched YouTube videos browsing through it. I can pretty confidently say that The Talbert File is fake, and not an unreleased Freddy Files. It looks completely unfamiliar to me, and not something Scholastic would have put together. It also mentions characters that weren't created until years later. Pretty sure it's fake, folks.

2024.05.26 06:21 snootaiscool CMV: Corrosive is one of the more versatile element in BL3 (except for Moze)

Not only does the Flesh Melter exist, but Zane & Amara both have the ability to double dip on the massive 160% Corrosive bonus it provides (Indiscriminate, Ties That Bind, Our Man Flynt, or God help Eraser & Remnant). FL4K has Interplanetary Stalker's Robot Bonus, which can be made active effectively 24/7 with the Bounty Hunter & is multiplicative with the Flesh Melter. The only edge case being Moze who has to sacrifice Short Fuse & Skag Den to benefit from the Flesh Melter, although she has her own weird gimmick in Corrosive with the Green Monster (which is a whole different can of worms being a seperate instance of Corrosive DMG, not a direct increase to Elemental DMG). There is a case to be made in certain scenarios with Zane & Amara, such as how Zane still has issues with DoTs even with Duct-Tape Mod (there's also no Corrosive equivalent to the Rad Suit/Transformer) & Amara can always just slap on a Driver + Elemental Projector to easily benefit any element at her disposal except Radiation.

2024.05.26 03:09 talkingtoabrickwall Just lost-long post

Im (27F) probably more lost than I've ever been and starting to just detach myself. After everything that's happened in my life I thought everything would be better when I met my now (26M) boyfriend. Everything was great for a long time. I got my drivers license, good job, a car. 4 years into the relationship, I found out he had cheated the whole time. We broke up for a while, both went to counseling and things were fine for a long time again.
Fast forward to 2022 and I was SA... everyone including him blamed me for a while, even I did except my only friend here and my family because I never tell them what's going on and dad is sick. I didn't report it until a year later. Went to crisis therapy and a lot changed. Things were getting better again.i started to stand up for myself, volunteer with animal adoptions, donated clothes that used to fit(I got fat)
Fast forward to now. The relationship is basically done. We fought last night because he said he didn't want or need the cleaning kit for his hunting tools. I didn't say anything even though it hurt until he pressed me on what was wrong. When I told him he got defensive.
Later I asked if we could talk and he basically said I don't clean enough. He works 2 jobs and never please him enough(true). He said I needed to look at it from his perspective. I do, and when I gave him my perspective of I work 1, dog sit on the side and go to school. I get home, take care of all of the animals, cook dinner if i have time, by the time I'm done it's maybe 8pm and he's getting home. We eat, I clean what I use and shower.
I acknowledge I can be lazy. I don't always deep clean, the dishes pile up, the counter gets piled with mail. But I'm tired too. Mentally. Everything that's happend in life just gets to me. We're both tired and it's become evident I'm not giving him what he needs.
We've talked before and he's pointed out I don't really have places to go to he'd feel bad breaking up because I would have to leave. I still don't tell my family what goes on for reasons that are too long and complicated. I don't have friends besides one person, but he's also his friend. I can't go to his family. Part of me wants out. Part of me doesn't. Can't afford to live alone. Can't go back to my family. I feel like I'm turning into a robot. I don't need advice, just getting it off my chest. Happy 7 year anniversary...
TlDR- relationship is dead, feeling lost and stuck. Sorry for the long post

2024.05.25 13:00 No-Act386 Here my freedom planet 2 review part 2

I will say the later part of the game had higher high but a bit of akward lows, to start with tgere two stages come to my mind as just dislike them being the sky bridge and the very final stage which I'll explain later but most of the stages were between servicable and great with lightning tower, bakunawa rush and robot graveyard being paersonal favs, bosses sure got mostly good progression but some I found bad like the shell growth, titan armor 1 and tunner driver which were tedious.
For the story it was continue to be well but I can feel some cracks in the plot mostly boil down kalaw just gone after his boss fight until the ending and the ending feel a bit unplanned I do see the relation of cordelia and merga to be quite engaging as well as lilac's development to keep her morals despite her torn apart past.
Presentation continue to be well and I will say it topped live a live remaster when it come to spite based presentation but I will say sky bridge does give me a headache at the start like this moving trees look cool but does make me feel a bit uncomfterable.
The ost while maybe a hot pick I prefer 2's ost over 1's while yes most of the remixed of the original ones are not as good as the og I found most of them match to my preference of upbeat and lively kinda in the vein of MK8's electrodome.
For the boss devision mode while I appreaciate putting a boss rush mode kirby style I do thing is inferior to kirby's by spilltting the mode since there no EX bosses I don't see the split working and think they should combine it and put 10 petal flowers to compansate as well 10 crystal choises.
My main issue with the game is the true ending not from how you get it but is feel underwhelming the final stage boil down to keep fast or die with some pretty annoying sections as for the final bosses while merga was defentiley what I wanted from omega zero same can't be said to bakunawa fusions which was a bit underwhelming.
Overall I say the game is a masterpiece and get a good spot of being my number 6 in my top 10 favorite games of all time getting the rank of high S tier, a boss rank will come soon as well when I get to the other cast but my general plan is to do a run with the other 3 and then do a hard mode run with spacing parts to prevent a fatigue.
Story:8.3
Presentation:9.8
Gameplay:9.3

2024.05.25 11:04 heyyouyes_you It’s my one year anniversary of moving to Johannesburg from the US. Here are some things I’ve learned

Some background: I’m an American and have been living in Johannesburg for exactly one year. Here are a few things I’ve learned about the city in that time:
The food here is great. No matter what restaurant you choose, you’re almost guaranteed an amazing meal (the exception to this rule being Mexican food). The service you get will also be second to none. You could stay at a 5 star hotel in Manhattan and will almost certainly receive worse service than you will at a basic steakhouse in Johannesburg
The most dangerous thing about this city is without a doubt driving. Half the cars don’t look roadworthy, crossing an intersection feels like playing Russian roulette and robots (traffic lights to my American friends) don’t operate during load-shedding, appear to be an object prone to theft and otherwise are less reliable than a 1999 Alfa Romeo.
The buildings and rchitecture is simply stunning. Chicago is often revered as the most architecturally beautiful city in the US but some of the buildings in Sandton and even the CBD would give even the Windy City a run for its money - the view you get of the Sandton skyline as you drive towards it on the M75 is stunning. 11 Diagonal Street is beautiful (and I even quite like the Shield Deodorant building next to it). Even the smaller buildings like 93 Grayston Drive would be enough to be a landmark in other cities.
The people of Johannesburg (Joburgers?) certainly make a mountain out of a molehill! One pothole on a road means the entire road is collapsing. Someone with the common cold is on death’s doorstep. A single street light in Yeoville can go out and someone in Parkhurst will say the whole city has gone dark.
If you’re talking to some new people at a party in the US, a lot of the time they’ll pretend to listen to what you’re saying. Even when interacting with people generally,whether it be at the checkout or an Uber driver, you’ll often get the sense that they think you’re wasting their time. Now don’t get me wrong, the US is a friendly place compared to most other places I’ve been (one in particular comes to mind…) but it’s as if the whole country woke up on the wrong side of the bed compared to Johannesburg People here will actively listen to what you’re saying, almost everyone seems to have a positive attitude and that stressed out ready-to-snap any moment energy people in larger US cities can carry is absent. It’s an unbelievably positive city.
The work ethic here is crazy. It’s not just the hours that people put in but it’s the pride people take in their work. People want to master what they do and be the best at it that they can. Now, I know there is some incompetence in the public sector but this is definitely reflective of my experience working in the private sector. Everyone knows exactly what they’re doing and wants to know even more about the field they work in. It’s like everyone is writing a book - every author wants their book to be the best possible and will work to improve it until the day it goes to print - that’s the sense I get from Joburgers in the workplace.
If something isn’t working, people work to improve it. This may seem like a weird point to raise, but here’s an example: my sister lives in Memphis Tennessee. This is a fairly large and wealthy city but has a very high crime rate (I believe it’s even higher than Johannesburg’s). In order to deal with crime, people here build walls and install electric fences around their houses, install burglar bars and created an entire industry around private security. None of this has happened in Memphis. After decades of high crime the problem has only become worse and nothing even close to what Joburg has done to deal with crime has been done in Memphis.
These are just a few things I’ve come to know and love about Johannesburg after living here for a year. I could go on and on about the weather, shopping, housing, etc but it’s already a long post.
I love this city and look forward to many more years of living here.

2024.05.24 21:57 RealityJunior800 Seeking Feedback on My DIY Ping Pong-Playing Robot Project!

Hi everyone,
I'm working on a DIY project to build a robot that can play ping pong with me, and I'd love to get your feedback and advice! Here’s a rundown of my plan and the components I’m considering:
Project Overview
I want the robot to have three different modes (beginner, intermediate, advanced) that can be selected using buttons. The robot will play on a standard-sized ping pong table under stable lighting conditions. My budget for this project is under $300, and I have access to a 3D printer for creating custom parts.
Key Components
Mechanical Design:
Motors and Actuators:
Sensors:
Control System:
Buttons for Modes:
Power Supply:
Software and Programming
Arduino Code (Motor Control):
#include
Servo servo1;
Servo servo2;
const int button1Pin = 2; // Beginner mode button
const int button2Pin = 3; // Intermediate mode button
const int button3Pin = 4; // Advanced mode button
int mode = 1; // Default mode: Beginner
void setup() {
servo1.attach(9);
servo2.attach(10);
pinMode(button1Pin, INPUT_PULLUP);
pinMode(button2Pin, INPUT_PULLUP);
pinMode(button3Pin, INPUT_PULLUP);
Serial.begin(9600);
}
void loop() {
if (digitalRead(button1Pin) == LOW) mode = 1; // Beginner
if (digitalRead(button2Pin) == LOW) mode = 2; // Intermediate
if (digitalRead(button3Pin) == LOW) mode = 3; // Advanced
if (Serial.available() > 0) {
String data = Serial.readStringUntil('\n');
int commaIndex = data.indexOf(',');
int x = data.substring(0, commaIndex).toInt();
int y = data.substring(commaIndex + 1).toInt();
controlPaddle(x, y);
}
}
void controlPaddle(int x, int y) {
int angle1 = map(x, 0, 640, 0, 180); // Map x from camera range to servo range
int angle2 = map(y, 0, 480, 0, 180); // Map y from camera range to servo range
switch(mode) {
case 1: // Beginner mode
servo1.write(angle1);
servo2.write(angle2);
break;
case 2: // Intermediate mode
servo1.write(angle1);
servo2.write(angle2 + 10); // Adjust for difficulty
break;
case 3: // Advanced mode
servo1.write(angle1);
servo2.write(angle2 + 20); // Adjust for more difficulty
break;
}
}
Raspberry Pi Code (Ball Tracking and Control):
import cv2
import numpy as np
import serial
import time
# Initialize serial communication with Arduino
arduino = serial.Serial('/dev/ttyUSB0', 9600)
time.sleep(2) # Give some time for the serial connection to establish
# Initialize the camera
cap = cv2.VideoCapture(0)
# Define the range of the ball color in HSV
lower_color_bound = np.array([29, 86, 6])
upper_color_bound = np.array([64, 255, 255])
while True:
ret, frame = cap.read()
if not ret:
break
# Ball tracking logic using OpenCV
hsv = cv2.cvtColor(frame, cv2.COLOR_BGR2HSV)
mask = cv2.inRange(hsv, lower_color_bound, upper_color_bound)
contours, _ = cv2.findContours(mask, cv2.RETR_TREE, cv2.CHAIN_APPROX_SIMPLE)
for contour in contours:
area = cv2.contourArea(contour)
if area > 500: # Filter small contours
x, y, w, h = cv2.boundingRect(contour)
# Draw rectangle around the ball
cv2.rectangle(frame, (x, y), (x+w, y+h), (0, 255, 0), 2)
# Send coordinates to Arduino
arduino.write(f"{x},{y}\n".encode())
break # Only track the first (largest) contour
cv2.imshow('Frame', frame)
if cv2.waitKey(1) & 0xFF == ord('q'):
break
cap.release()
cv2.destroyAllWindows()
arduino.close()
Questions
  1. Feasibility: Does this setup look like it would work for creating a functional ping pong-playing robot?
  2. Improvements: Are there any improvements or alternative components you’d recommend?
  3. Challenges: What potential challenges should I be aware of as I proceed with this project?
I appreciate any advice, suggestions, or feedback you can offer. Thanks in advance for your help!

2024.05.24 20:02 Bekahelen Power On - Chapter 13

Chapter 13

Log. 20465.k.a I asked them to confirm the information. I didn't want to believe it. But it's true. I trust my group. The virus does come from a non-human source. Its origin is an array source. It’s not private. Only The Great Government has access to such a network. The Great Government, the Worker Robots, and the Robot Physicians, whom I saw infecting people.

The first thing Bobbie felt was the growing headache. The second was a cold hand on her arm. When she opened her eyes to look at it, she saw the metal fingers against her skin. She screamed, tried to get away, but trying to move spread pain throughout her body. Bobbie cried for help in a fit of panic, but no one came to help.
— Calm down, you’re gonna hurt yourself. — a male voice tried to talk to her, but she wasn’t listening.
— Let me go! Don’t hurt me!
— I’m trying to help you! — he insisted.
— Please, I-I won’t tell anyone, just let me go! — She didn’t want to die by those mechanic hands.
The man let out a sigh and a metallic gait took him away. Bobbie’s eyes were darting around, trying to understand where she was, what was happening, why she was in so much pain and couldn’t move. A cry of relief escaped her as a woman — with no metallic parts — walked into the room and sat by her side.
— I see you’re awake. — Her voice was soft and calm, the shape of her face and the freckles were somehow familiar, but the green eyes were strange.
— Where am I? — Bobbie managed to calm herself down and ask.
— At the hospital. Ya suffered an accident, our scout found ya out there, in the sun. But you’re okay, your bike’s been taken to the garage, and your belongings are all over there.
— I can’t move. — Bobbie’s imagination got the best of her, her legs must have been missing, she would never ride a bike again, she would never walk! “Will they still like me if I don’t have legs anymore?” she thought.
— No, and ya shouldn’t try, eh. Although nothing’s broken, your muscles seem hurt, so we immobilised ya for the time being. — The woman waited for more questions, but Bobbie couldn’t speak. She had never had an accident like that before. But her legs were still there!! — Ya were also dehydrated and scratched here and there, but no stitches were needed, so that’s good. Do ya remember your name?
— I’m… Bobbie.
— Nice to meet ya, Bobbie. The circumstances ain’t the best, no, but you’re alive and will get well soon, so that’s all that matters. I’m Koira, by the way, and the man who was here is Tovu.
— The Machine? — The shock of that cold hand came back and her eyes widened with fear.
— He ain’t a Machine, don’t ya worry. He had an accident as well, some years ago, and lost some limbs. I made some new ones, but they’re metal. He won’t do ya any harm, so ya don’t need to be afraid.
— But… won’t he get, I don’t know, infected or something?
— Of course not! — Koira laughed. — At first, he was afraid as well, but after some adapting, he noticed it was better than not having arms and legs.
— Oh. But mine…
— Yours are fine. Just hurt for now.
— The letters! Oh my, my letters, are they okay? — Bobbie tried to sit down by reflex and a loud painful moan escaped her mouth.
Koira quickly got up and helped her lay down.
— Your letters are all over there, in your bag. Ya really are a Mail Biker, eh?
— Yes… — Some gears started spinning in her brains again, the life-long job she enjoyed so much was forcing her back to priorities. — Whatcha said your name was again?
— Koira, why?
— Séra’s aunt?
— Oh my sun, yah! Do ya know her? How is she? I haven’t received anything from her in such a long time, I was afraid…
— She’s fine, ahn, she’s got a car now. There’s a letter from her in my bag, so I won’t give you spoilers.
Koira smiled with tears in her eyes, she had been afraid for years; she didn’t know if Séra hated her and didn’t want to reply, or if her letters were not making all the way to Sand City, or worse.
— Do ya know where she is now?
— We met in Bridge City, now now I don’t know where she is.
— That makes sense. — Koira smiled.
— I’d rather take the letters to the Post Office myself, but given my condition, I think you can do it. If it’s not much of a problem. — she added in quite a hurry, then continued: — And if you get me my bag, I can give you yours.
— Thank ya so much. — She had the same smile as Séra’s, the same pointy nose and large eyes.
Koira got up and wiped the tears off her face. She walked to Bobbie’s bag and then helped the Biker into a sitting position, in a way her body wouldn’t hurt as much. Only then Bobbie saw the damage: her left arm and leg were in a cast, there was a huge bruise on her side — she was wearing a top — and her helmet, on a table not too far, had a dent on the left, where the visor had broken. It had been quite the fall.
— Here it is. — Bobbie handed the yellowish envelope to Koira. — I hope you enjoy the news.
— I’m sure I will. And if ya need anything, well, I ain’t no doctor, but most people here are, so just ring the bell and someone will come.
— Thanks. — Bobbie smiled. — ‘Bout my bike… is the damage as big as mine?
— I don’t think so. I can take a look at it, if ya want, or it can wait until you’re ready.
— I guess it can wait. Then we can take a look at it together? Séra told me much about your mechanical skills.
— Sounds like a plan, Bobbie.
A nurse entered the room with a food-tray and a bottle of juice, and Koira took the opportunity to leave. She thanked Bobbie once more for the letter, which the woman said was no trouble at all, and after eating, the nurse gave her some pain pills, and her consciousness faded away once more.
Log. 20385.h.c Anyway, we’ve discovered that the virus doesn’t have a human signature, much less an artificial human signature, like the Programmer. The signature is completely artificial. When humans create something, they leave a part of themselves, whether they’re natural humans or not — natural humans, I hate this term — so it’s possible, no matter how good the creator is, to trace a program to its source. When we discovered the source of the virus, we saw that it was not unique. It appeared to be the Net itself. The source was an array. And that is not human. I don't want to believe this is real.
Tovu was adjusting the blindfold over his face when he recognised Koira’s steps going toward him. It had been about three years since they officially met, and it took months for him to even consider trusting her. They had a complicated friendship; Tovu wouldn’t dare even call her friend. He wasn’t worth it.
Almost a decade ago, not long after Koira left Sand City, Tovu was sent after her. He had been a loyal Sun follower for all his life, and was tasked with the important mission of getting the stolen soul from her. Maybe, if the soul was retrieved, the child would be well, and people would be happier.
He followed her trace from one city to the other, but it was like she knew about him. Finding her was near impossible. Crossing the forest by foot was harder than anything he could have ever imagined; magic and forbidden tools — technology — were the only possible answer for people to survive in that dungeon of trees and wild beasts.
It was a dark night when the rain started. In the morning, it was still pouring. Tovu had no idea the sun was up, and he didn’t do his prayers at the right time. He found a crevice between some trees, a place where he could crawl into and wait until the rain stopped.
However, once he got comfortable, little stars burnt his eyes and a transparent frozen door shut him in. Tovu hit the glass with all the strength he had, but it didn’t give up. It got worse. Cold, freezing air started filling that so small space, cold that bit his skin and froze his muscles. He didn’t remember anything after that.
Voices woke him up after a long sleep; he barely remembered his own name.
— It’s another one of those Sun creeps. I don’t know how they manage to get here.
— I don’t even know how he got here, I have no idea.
— Feri should’ve let him to rot, maybe he would wake up in a super high tech future, have a syncope and die right there and then.
— What life is he even gonna have now? He’s missing so many pieces!
Laughter filled his ears, but his vision was nothing but darkness. He raised his arms and tried to scratch his eyes, however, only his right hand reached his face. “Maybe my other arm is too hurt to move”, he thought. His left hand was his best hand, so things could get a bit difficult.
As Tovu touched his eyes, terror filled his chest: there were no eyes. The sockets were closed shut and empty. “He’s missing pieces”, they had said. His hand followed his left shoulder shaking much more than he ever thought possible, and found nothing below the elbow. Then he screamed.
He screamed at the top of his lungs, tried to get up only to notice he couldn’t. Tovu couldn’t feel his legs, his feet, his toes, and his hand discovered there was nothing below the knees. Air escaped his chest and didn’t come back, breathing was impossible and the hands grabbing his ragged body, pushing him back to bed didn’t answer any of his questions.
A sting on his thigh spread shivers all over his body, and as fast as the panic came, all was gone once more.
This cycle was repeated again and again, until one day he woke up and didn't scream. He waited in silence, paying attention to the sounds around him, resigned, until the door was opened.
— Hey. How are ya feeling? — a woman asked kindly.
— That's a stupid question. — Tovu answered. — Are you from Sand City?
— I am. And you're Tovu, ain't ya? We had to look through the rest of your things to be sure ya weren't dangerous. I saw a Sun pendant.
— I follow a god. Is that a problem?
— It is when ya were sent to kill me. — She pushed a chair close to his bed and sat down; she could see how tense the man suddenly got. The woman, on the other hand, was calm, she didn't sound afraid. There was no reason to. — I’m Koira. I was invited to leave a few years ago.
— I can't do it now. — He didn't need the trouble of denying it. — What will you do to me?
— Don't ya wanna know what happened? How ya got like that?
— No point in learning the past if I'll die soon anyway.
— I won't kill ya. — She sighed. — Ya got caught in a cryo chamber. It's like a cooling box, but for people. I had never seen one before, just read about it. If ya had been lucky, nothing bad would've happened. But ya weren't. It was somehow broken. It got too cold. We found ya before the ice started eating your torso, but your legs and arms were mostly gone. We think ya were there for months to a year or two.
— That's… a lot to process.
— I know. But at least I’ve got really into prosthetics, so as an apology, ya could let me build ya new limbs. Think about it, lemme know. The nurse will bring ya some food now. It's time ya go back to eating.
Koira got up and left the chair by the bed, where, less than a minute later, a nurse sat down and started feeding him some soup. Tovu didn't want to think much, but there was a maelstrom in his mind and it would surely drag him all the way to the bottom of the ocean.
Log. 20385.h.b The Great Government never explained us why the exchange was mandatory, but we all assumed it was for Gaya's well-being. In those years, the planet has really healed, without the constant exploration. However, the virus event made some of us anxious. And the government did nothing. The Robot Physicians did not report the failure, in fact they infect people!
Séra woke up from their night below the stars with Ganen clinging to her like there was no tomorrow. She stroke the curls hidden under the night cap, and kissed her forehead. Ganen squeezed her eyes and looked around to find her lover's so familiar face.
— Good morning, love. Did ya sleep well?
— Uhm… I had a nightmare.
— Wanna talk about it? My aunt always said nightmares are like wishes, if you tell, they don't happen. Although she managed to make many of my wishes true. — Séra pondered for a minute.
— I don't think I wanna talk about it. Not now, anyway. — She stretched and sat beside Séra. — Brekkie?
— Brekkie is always a good idea.
After some fresh fruit, coffee, and some bread with cheese, they got in the car and left. Bobbie had marked a path on their map and seemed like a good one, so they followed it without thinking twice. It wasn't difficult to find the path she might have used; with a bike such as hers, it was certainly easy, but by car… it was another story.
The trees were more and more abundant by the kilometre, and even though they were small, it was getting harder to drive between them. After moving at less than twenty kilometres per hour for a while, Séra decided to stop.
She got out of the car and looked around, maybe if they could open the path, the car could move more easily. Once she mentioned the idea to Ganen, though, the woman said it would be near impossible: the woods were too dense to open a road for a car, and the trees ahead kept getting bigger.
— What do we do now? — Séra looked at Ganen for the answers.
— Let’s go back, and look for a path on foot. Worst case scenario, we’ll go around the forest.
— That sounds slow. — she complained.
— It’s still faster than opening a road by hand. — Ganen raised her brows.
— Yah… can’t argue with that, actually. — Séra sighed. — I can’t turn the car now, we’ll have to go back in reverse. Can ya guide me?
— Like, sit in the back and give you directions?
— Yah. I trust ya.
— All right, I think I can do it. — She sounded a bit nervous.
Once they were both in the car, Séra in the driver’s seat and Ganen in the back — next to the small cooling box —, they started driving. The path was bumpy as hell, their speed was as sluggish as they could, and it took about an hour to find enough space and turn the car around.
Séra said she needed a pause and snacks, she was so nervous because of that difficult drive her hands were shaking. Ganen agreed it was a good idea, she was tired of sitting in a weird position and trying to find the best path; some rest and food would do them good.
While they were eating, Séra got the map and compass; they needed to discover where, exactly, that place was. However, after a few confusing notes, she gave up.
— What’s wrong, hun? — Ganen asked, her mouth full of bread and cheese.
— We’re lost.
— Oh. — She thought for a second. — Wait for the stars?
— It’s what I was thinking. I’ll be able to tell them. — Séra paused, disappointed in herself. — Sorry.
— For what? — Ganen almost interrupted her. Then she got closer and touched her face: — There’s nothing to be sorry about. We can explore a bit, have some fun, then check the stars and find our way again.
— Really? I mean, ain’t ya upset? — She furrowed her brows, surprised.
— No. — Ganen shrugged. — I’ve told you all the times I got lost in the last two years, haven’t I? We can’t panic. Gotta stay calm, find shelter, and wait for the stars.
— You’re so smart. — Séra smiled, got close enough for a kiss. — I’m very lucky to be around ya, ya know?
— I wouldn’t be this far without you. — Ganen wrapped her arms around her lover and laid down on the floor, bringing Séra along. — Come on, we have to wait for a while.
Séra bit her lip; it wasn’t a bad idea.
Log. 20385.h.a There was a discovery about the virus. Something that will change the way we see things! It's only been ten years since the Body Exchange. We have never been formally authorised to study the bodies or the programs that make us functional. Only the experts who set up the Net, the Cloud, the bodies... only they know how to really tinker with us, inorganic humans.
Tovu had been feeling better that week. It was difficult to use his right hand for eating; he was left-handed, but his left hand had frozen to oblivion and it wasn’t there anymore. He felt the abrupt end of his arm and sighed. The ice had been kind enough to leave a bit of forearm, so — as Koira explained — he could have more movement once the prosthetics were attached.
He wasn’t yet sure about those foreign, artificial limbs, though. Tovu knew he could learn how to live as he was, missing some parts didn’t make him less of a person. There were wheelchairs and he still had one hand, it was all a matter of practising.
However, the process was proving itself to be harder than the man hoped. Being eyeless didn’t help. Once again he caught the book and started following the dots with the tip of his fingers, trying to recognise the letters. It did a good job keeping his mind away from the fact that he was in the horrible and blasphemous Underground City.
Tovu hadn’t left his room in those weeks, at first because there wasn’t much strength in his body, and then because he was afraid. He would never admit it, but fear was what he felt most. Fear of the unknown. Fear of the stories he’d heard. Fear of the future. Fear of the dark.
He couldn’t go back to Sand City, in his current state, it was simply impossible. And if he went back with prosthetics, they wouldn’t let him in. The other Sun followers, his brothers and sisters, would kill him on sight.
He thought about going to the Farms, maybe someone could accept him there, he could try and teach children how to read, how to make bioluminescent moss, he would have to learn how to feel if plants were good to be harvested, though it could be difficult to harvest in a wheelchair.
— I have nowhere else to go.
— Ya could stay here and get the prosthetics. — Koira said quite out of the blue. She was so silent Tovu didn’t hear her come into the room. — Ya could learn how to feel the tools, I don’t mind making Braille labels for ya.
— Why are you helping me?
— I believe in second chances, silly. — Her steps got closer and Tovu felt the woman sit by his side. — Ya did horrible things, but I think it’s never too late to do some good.
— They don’t like me here.
— Not now. At the moment you’re just one more fanatic. — Even when her words were sharp, Koira’s voice was soft and kind. — Prove them wrong.
— I don’t know if I can.
— Welp, neither do I. But I’m sure we can try. Life is trial and error, making mistakes and learning how to fix them. Mistaking on its own isn’t wrong. Keeping things unfixed is.
Tovu took a deep breath, felt the thick unchanging air in his lungs. It was still disgusting, but what other choices did he have? He couldn’t think of any.
— Lemme sleep on it.
— More? — She laughed. — I suppose ya can think all ya want, I ain’t gonna force ya to do anything, not even use the wheelchair I left outside the room for ya. I have to go now, but we’ll talk later. Don’t get lost! — She winked, then remembered he didn’t have eyes, so she added, a bit embarrassed: — I winked. It was a joke. Sorry. I’ll just go now. Bye.
He heard Koira’s steps further and further away, until he couldn’t hear her anymore. Tovu rested his head on the pillow; he didn’t want to be a damaged toy she could play with.
Log. 20042.b I decided that we must fight for ourselves! I called the Programmer and a few more people from the Group. We’ll research and fight the virus. Let's defend humanity! The sun was going down while Ganen and Séra were still lying on the floor. For their despair, however, clouds were gathering closer and closer, and it didn’t take long until they blocked all the stars.
— I guess our plan failed. — Ganen sat down. — I haven’t seen a sky this cloudy in… — She had to stop to think. — A few weeks before I got to Sand City.
— Oi, it’s been a while, eh? — Séra looked at her compass, a bit disheartened. — It’s a shame it can’t tell us our exact location. It’d be so amazing if maps could do that!
— They sort of do, don’t they? — Ganen wasn’t sure where the woman was getting at.
— Not really, we have to discover and be careful not to stray from the path. But if there was a magic dot of sorts, that pinpointed where we were on the map itself, you know? And it moved along with us, we’d never get lost!
— Oh! Oh, wow, yes, that’d be amazing! — Ganen looked at Séra; it was a brilliant idea, even though they had no way of performing it. — Maybe in the Underground City they have tech for that?
— Can ya imagine?! — Her eyes widened in awe.
— Yeah. — Ganen stared at the sky for a while more, maybe if she wished really hard, the clouds would go away. As she expected, they didn’t. — So, what are we going to do?
— Camp and dine? — Séra shrugged.
— I guess it is what it is. — She nodded. — I’ll set up dinner, you set up camp?
— That’s how it works, baby. — But before they could stand up, Séra hugged Ganen once more and kissed her face. — For energy.
— Another for luck. — Ganen kissed her back.
— Ain’t three for luck? — It was a genuine question, and that thought interrupted her for a while. — Like, the third time’s the charm or something?
— Not a problem. — Ganen kissed her once again and they laughed. — We’re so stupid. Come on, get up!
Careful not to hurt her arm, Séra took her hands and let Ganen pull her up. They walked to the car, and while one started making a fire, the other was setting the parts for the tent. As Séra was hammering the pegs, she saw some mushrooms growing around the base of a tree.
It made sense, that region was indeed more humid — the sky seemed just about to fall all over them —, just like the mushroom centres within the tunnels of Sand City. As she approached, the fungi itself looked quite similar to the ones she would get at the city. And those were delicious with butter, something they had in the basket Ahda had given them.
With a smile on her face and feeling full of luck, Séra grabbed the mushrooms and took them to Ganen.
— Are you sure these are not poisonous? — the woman asked.
— Yah, don’t they look like the ones we had once?
— Well, yes, but you know some mushrooms can be hallucinogenic, don’t you?
— Ain’t those only the ones that get blue? — She broke one in her hand. — This one is a brownish-white.
— Lemme see one. — Ganen raised her hand and Séra gave her a few; it was true the first knew more about nature than the second. — Yeah, you’re right. These are the same we used to have in your house. Butter and salt? — She bit her lip; those were a delicacy and it sure was lucky finding them there.
— I’ll leave’em with ya, and finish the tent.
— I’ll make some juice.
It didn’t take long for Séra to finish the tent, and soon they were eating some nice dinner. Ganen had made agave juice, and the sky had become prettier. There was a gentle wind in the air, it surrounded the women with kindness and comfort, and almost put them to sleep on the grassy ground.
The dark clouds in the sky danced with the wind, Séra could almost touch them, feel the soft cotton texture on the tips of her fingers. The moon spied on them from behind the clouds, suspicious of the Machine in their boot. But the Moon didn’t know where it was, only that they had it.
Ganen laughed with the thought; the moon was nothing but a rock in the sky, it wasn’t a god, like people used to say, and it was beautiful. More beautiful than the sun, she’d dare say. The sun was just a fiery burning thing that hurt her eyes.
She missed the way leaves created mosaics on the floor, how they stopped the light of the sun from reaching the ground and transformed that simple act of defiance into art. And still, nature needed the sun. All that was green needed light and warmth, and only the fiery star could give it to them.
Everything needed everything to survive, each needed the other, and Ganen looked at Séra, who smiled absentmindedly, eyes nailed to the sky, her hand reaching for the clouds. She not only needed, she wanted a friend for that journey, and Séra became so much more than that.
It was scary sometimes, like when Ori tried to hurt them, but that had been the first and last time Séra acted in such a violent way. She was always so sweet all of the time.
— Whatcha lookin’ at? — The words rolled slowly out of her mouth.
— At you. — Ganen felt like she ate each one of the words before she could understand them. It was a funny feeling. It made her laugh for quite a while. — Oh gosh, sorry! Uhm, but, yeah, I’m looking at you.
— I see. I’m trying to get a cloud. Maybe, if I was a bit taller, I could reach one. And we could check the stars.
— This will sound crazy dangerous, but, what if… — She paused for dramatic effect. — you stood up?
— I was laying down this whole time! — Séra was surprised; she really hadn’t noticed before. — I’ll try it. If it works, I’ll get ya up too.
— Sounds smart!
Ganen observed while Séra got up one centimetre at a time, careful not to lose her balance and fall. She looked up and stretched her hands. Still too far. Séra bent her knees, ready to jump, then she gave up. Jumping sounded dangerous, but they needed to get even higher.
— There were trees back there. Maybe if we climb one, we can reach the clouds. — she suggested.
— Let’s take a rope. Can you help me up?
— Of course!
Séra got her up too fast and all went silver for a moment. They stared at each other and started laughing, that was such a ridiculous idea, but it was bound to work! Ganen, then, got some rope, and ran back to the trees, Séra right behind her.
Log. 19790.f “Dear Clara Schoenberg, we are handling the situation as discreetly as possible. At the moment, the route of Comet Treiny is our priority. However, we did not receive any reports from Physicians about memory loss and very few people reported problems with the Cloud. Without real complaints and reports about the issue, there is not much we can do. Please stay safe and report any difficulties.” Well, I don't think we’ll get anywhere if we depend on the government.
Tovu didn’t like the wheelchair. At first, the idea excited him, it was true he couldn’t see, but he would be able to hear, feel, breathe air that had not been stuck in his room for ages. The nurses sat him on the chair, then took his hand and placed it on a stick:
— Push it in the direction you want to go, it will stop if you release it. If by any chance it doesn’t, there’s a manual brake on the right wheel. — the nurse explained.
— Wait. — Tovu needed a moment to process what he heard.
— Do you think you can do it?
— The chair… moves on its own. Is that it?
— Yes. — The nurse let out a tired breath. — It has a battery and a motor, will that be a problem?
— Yes!! Of course if it will! I can’t use this, it’ll finish killing me! — Terrified and angry, Tovu leaned forward and fell face first on the floor.
He moved so fast the nurses couldn’t hold him, and when Tovu felt hands around his body, he started flailing and fighting, he would never use something with a motor, he didn’t even like cars! Those things were monsters from ages past, barely tamed.
— Calm down, jeez, you don’t wanna use it, okay, but don’t hurt yourself, man!
They held him tighter and managed to put him in a sitting position on the floor. Tovu heard the wheelchair being taken away and all he wanted was to wrap his arms around his legs and hide his face. He could feel the tears slowly filling up his nose and pouring down. That was terrifying. He couldn’t even cry right.
Hiccups broke his silence and he bit his lip to try and stop crying, to no avail. Tovu pulled the shirt collar over his face as best as he could, and lied to himself that no one could see him. He didn’t even know if there was anyone else around him.
— Do you want to go back to your room? — a nurse asked, to his embarrassment. — We can also get a normal wheelchair, but I’m not sure how you’ll operate it with one hand.
He cleaned his nose and took a deep, ragged breath. He felt like being given to an Immortal all over again.
— I think… I’d prefer to go back to my room.
— Okay. We’ll take you there, so don’t fight this time.
Tovu nodded and felt the unknown hands around his body once again, and soon he was back to his bed. He turned to the side and hid under the blanket. Even the fear of death wasn’t as overwhelming as the feeling of cold, deadly metal on his skin.
