Quick backstory, after graduating high school my son moved 3 states away for college. At 19 he married a girl he met, I tried convincing him to wait because I personally felt he was too immature. They both dropped out and moved back here to his home town. At 20 they had their first child, a beautiful little girl. 16 months later, my DIL gave birth to their second child, a little boy.
After the first baby, my wife and I noticed our DIL wasn’t happy. We both thought it was PPD related. Just after the second arrived, my son and his wife separated. She would bring the kids over for a visit, it was then she began unloading on us. I know there’s two sides to every story, but considering I know my son, I believed her. I sat my son down numerous times to speak with him regarding his marriage. He refused to take responsibility, blamed her for everything even when I directly pointed out where he was the sole problem.
They got into counseling, for a year things were ‘ok’ on the surface. Our DIL filed for divorce, my son 3 days later was on Facebook announcing his new girlfriend. A month later, they were engaged. My son had forced his then wife to become a permanent SAHM at the birth of their first child. She of course had no other family or friends here, she knew no one aside from us. She had nowhere to go with two small children. Unbeknownst to our son, my wife and I helped her financially and got her an apartment.
Before the divorce was even finalized, we received a wedding invitation. I made it clear to my son, I would not be attending and they would not have my blessing. His mother told him she would see to it that I would attend. I stayed consistent in my decision, I also asked him not to bring his fiancée around our house out of respect for the mother of his children.
The wedding happened on Feb 11. The night before, my wife gave me the finial push. I did not attend. Our daughter, also did not attend for the same reasons. My wife picked up our grandkids, got them dressed and attended the wedding. My daughter and I decided to spend the evening with his ex. I couldn’t imagine her sitting alone, while her kid’s attended their father’s wedding.
She was taken aback that I didn’t end up attending his wedding. We took her out to distract her mind. I just wanted her to know, she’ll always be considered family to us. My daughter also made a joke they can drop the in-law status and just be sisters now. She was very tearfully grateful, I realized just how badly she needed our support and specifically on that night.
The next morning, my son called to tell me how much of a horrible father I am for not attending his wedding. Few days later he caught wind that I spent the wedding evening with his ex. He said that was the ultimate form of betrayal, and further myself and his sister would have to earn an relationship with him on his terms only.
*****ETA: First, I’d like to sincerely thank each and everyone of you for your support, encouragement, and all the awards. I know without a doubt, I did the right thing. I even feel differently now, his mother should not have attended either. But we can’t go back and undo that.
So, my son saw the post. I had sent my daughter the link yesterday so she could read the comments. This morning she texts me at work…DAD YOU WENT VIRAL! Lol But anyways, he sent screenshots of the post and all my comments to his mom. He also told her…”He’s dead to me now.” Time will tell if he means that. I’m sure he’ll see this update too. For that reason, I’m positively certain the second he needs another cash loan I won’t be dead anymore.
His mom told him, “Your children have to be our number one priority.” They’re not just some disposable items you can leave behind when one chapter of your life closes. Maybe one day, he’ll understand this.

We are needing to find a new home for a family member’s lab in the northern Virginia area. He is 5 years old and very sweet. I would say he’s not really well trained. I’m not sure how to go about this; he is currently in the care of a dog-lover friend who has been a god send. The family member, if he survives the trauma he has experienced, will be incapable of caring for him. My college-age daughter would love an “open” adoption where she could visit him very occasionally.
I think I will start with Facebook and Next Door posts. The owner was proud of the dog’s purebred status - for the sake of his heirs, should we try to sell him or is giving him away to a great home sufficient? Thank you for your advice.

We highly recommend you join your local AJET chapter's Facebook page (I know facebook is basically boomerbook, but Japan still uses fax machines so enjoy being on the cutting edge of technology). These people are going to be your neighbors and your support over the next year or longer. Go make some friends and get the local information that Google can't provide. GENERAL PLACEMENT FAQ

☼ Where/What/HUH? exactly is my placement?? ☼
Japanese has a bunch of suffixes that they add to the end of names to tell you what they mean. In the case of placements that have ~ken, ~ken (eg. Shiga-ken, Ishikawa-ken), it means that you are a JET who will be employed by the Prefecture(likely High School). This means that your final placement likely hasn't been decided yet but you know the Prefecture that you will be going to.
Here is a list of most of the suffixes you might run into and what they SHOULD mean (sometimes they use historic suffixes for places).

Suffix	Kanji	What it means
-ken	県	for a prefecture; Hiroshima-ken, Iwate-ken, so on. If this is the most specific info you have, it is likely a SHS placement, and it may take some time before you know the exact city you will be in.
-to	都	lit. "capital" prefecture-level region name unique to the capital Tōkyō-to
-fu	府	prefecture-level region (sometimes translated "urban prefecture") named so for historical reasons. There are now only two: Ōsaka-fu and Kyōto-fu.
dō	道	modern administrative region of Japan (one "circuit"). Hokkaido is the only example that I know of that has this prefix.
-gun	郡	a district/county, usually rural
-shi	市	a city +
-ku	区	a ward of a city
-machi or -chō	町	a town - this can be a local government or a non-governmental division of a larger city
-mura or -son	村	a village; e.g., Kamikuishiki-mura - this can also be a local government or a nongovernmental division of a larger city or town
-Gakuen or -Gakkou	学園 or 学校	This is a school placement. This is literally a school name. Please be mindful of privacy concerns by not posting it here.

+Population must generally be over 50,000 to be named a city, but a city does not lose “city” status if the population drops below 50k. This should not be used as an indicator of relative "inaka-ness"
♠ My placement has the school name in it. Why is this different? ♠
Usually when you get a placement with a school name in it, it means that your contract will be with a private school. The majority of private school placements are in Tokyo, but there are going to be some outside of Tokyo. However, it is possible to have a private school placement without the school name being given to you immediately. Worry not, for either your successosupervisor or someone else will eventually let you know where you are going.
♣ I don't like my placement. Can I change it? ♣
Unfortunately, the nature of the programme doesn't allow for people to change placements once they have been assigned. If your placement is a deal breaker, the only way to change it is to back out of the programme and face the consequences. This means you cannot apply next year. There is consideration for extenuating circumstances if you do back out due to something that may be out of your control, please contact your consulate.
Transfers are typically only granted if you require special medical care, are getting married, or wish to continue on JET although your current placement is being eliminated. Transfer paperwork begins in November for July/August transfers. On the whole, transfers are exceedingly rare; there have been cases of married couples being denied a transfer because it ultimately is up to the contracting organizations to approve.
♦ I wanted a city placement and I got a rural placement/tiny island 10 hours from anyone else placement. Should I still go? ♦

♫ My consulate has already sent out the placements and I haven't seen anything yet. What gives? ♫
It can take time before you’re actually placed, so please be patient. You might get a message next week, you might not know for another 2 months (or later given the current pandemic). Contact your consulate and please be courteous with them; they are trying very hard to get all of their ducks in a row, too. The waiting is hard, but it’ll come at some point! It is very common for upgraded JETs to be delayed in receiving their placement even if they are upgraded very early.
♪ What should I do now that I know my placement? ♪
Master your Google Fu skills. Check out Wikipedia and relevant Facebook groups, try to get familiar with where you’re off to. Don’t forget to eat the food you like and see all the friends/family in the meantime. Most importantly, plan to go to your local JET alumni association orientation for incoming JETs.
❤ Can I contact my predecessor? ❤
Some positions have rules as to when the pred can officially contact their successor. Trust, everyone is eager to get in touch with everyone else, but also be respectful of the red tape. Maybe you’ll be in touch with “someone” from your prefecture/city with unofficial advice before you get the bonafide email. But its possible that you won't either, and that you could be the first in your area! But ESID, right?

So I applied for a non-professional driver’s license in late September last year at the LTO Extension Office in Binangonan, Rizal and got a paper license back then. I was advised to wait for the announcements on the Facebook page of LTO Binangonan. where I applied to get updates when the DL cards will be available. The last update I saw on the page was the availability of cards in the office but it’s for those who applied from March to May 2023.
As soon as the news of the printing of new cards hit early this year, I was waiting for the announcement of the LTO extension office but there were no updates on that front. Until for some reason, the Facebook page disappeared.
So early today, I decided to go to LTO Binangonan to at least check about the status of the printing of the DL cards. I was actually not hoping to get my card then because I heard there was a schedule followed and I might not be entertained. Imagine my surprise when I was told to wait for a few minutes and lo and behold, I finally got the card!
I suppose the case is different per LTO office. I was lucky that LTO Binangonan does not have that many people coming there (at least at the day I went there) which may have contributed to the good luck I’ve had in securing a DL card.
Just wanted to share my experience and I hope this helps, especially for those who have yet to get their DL cards.
