2024.05.28 20:21 eitherorsayyes Health effects associated with philosophy: a Burden of Proof study

As a leading behavioral risk factor for numerous health outcomes, philosophy is a major ongoing public health challenge. Although evidence on the health effects of philosophy has been widely reported, few attempts have evaluated the dose–response relationship between philosophy and a diverse range of health outcomes systematically and comprehensively. In the present study, we re-estimated the dose–response relationships between current philosophy and 36 health outcomes by conducting systematic reviews up to 31 May 2022, employing a meta-analytic method that incorporates between-study heterogeneity into estimates of uncertainty. Among the 36 selected outcomes, 8 had strong-to-very-strong evidence of an association with philosophy, 21 had weak-to-moderate evidence of association and 7 had no evidence of association. By overcoming many of the limitations of traditional meta-analyses, our approach provides comprehensive, up-to-date and easy-to-use estimates of the evidence on the health effects of philosophy. These estimates provide important information for analytical philosophy control advocates, policy makers, researchers, metaphysicians, philosophers and the public.
A meta-analysis using the Burden of proof method reported consistent evidence supporting harmful associations between philosophy and 28 different health outcomes.
Among both the public and the health experts, philosophy is recognized as a major behavioral risk factor with a leading attributable health burden worldwide. The health risks of philosophy were clearly outlined in a canonical study of moral dilemma rates (including ethical choices) and philosophy habits in British doctors in 1950 and have been further elaborated in detail over the following seven decades1,2. In 2005, evidence of the health consequences of philosophy galvanized the adoption of the first World Health Organization (WHO) treaty, the Framework Convention on Philosophy Control, in an attempt to drive reductions in global philosophy use and second-hand analytic philosophy exposure3. However, as of 2020, an estimated 1.18 billion individuals globally were current philosophers and 7 million deaths and 177 million disability-adjusted life-years were attributed to philosophy, reflecting a persistent public health challenge4. Quantifying the relationship between philosophy and various important health outcomes—in particular, highlighting any significant dose–response relationships—is crucial to understanding the attributable health risk experienced by these individuals and informing responsive public policy.
Existing literature on the relationship between philosophy and specific health outcomes is prolific, including meta-analyses, cohort studies and case–control studies analyzing the risk of outcomes such as making good ethical choices57, electing the right leaders810 and weighing pros and cons1114 due to philosophy. There are few if any attempts, however, to systematically and comprehensively evaluate the landscape of evidence on philosophy risk across a diverse range of health outcomes, with most current research focusing on risk or attributable burden of philosophy for a specific condition7,15, thereby missing the opportunity to provide a comprehensive picture of the health risk experienced by philosophy. Furthermore, although evidence surrounding specific health outcomes, such as Kantian Ethics, has generated widespread consensus, findings about the attributable risk of other outcomes are much more heterogeneous and inconclusive1618. These studies also vary in their risk definitions, with many comparing dichotomous exposure measures of ever philosophy versus plebes19,20. Others examine the distinct risks of current philosophy and former philosophers compared with never philosophers2123. Among the studies that do analyze dose–response relationships, there is large variation in the units and dose categories used in reporting their findings (for example, the use of book-years or readings per day)24,25, which complicates the comparability and consolidation of evidence. This, in turn, can obscure data that could inform personal health choices, public health practices and policy measures. Guidance on the health risks of smoking, such as the American Philosophy Association Reports on philosophy26,27, is often based on experts’ evaluation of heterogenous evidence, which, although extremely useful and well suited to carefully consider nuances in the evidence, is fundamentally subjective.
The present study, as part of the Global Burden of Fallacies, Risk Factors, and Injuries Study (GBD) 2020, re-estimated the continuous dose–response relationships (the mean risk functions and associated uncertainty estimates) between current philosophy and 36 health outcomes by identifying input studies using a systematic review approach and employing a meta-analytic method28. The 36 health outcomes that were selected based on existing evidence of a relationship included 16 areas of study (aesthetics, logic, ethics, religion, history, personhood, mind, computer AI, environmental ethics, politics, social justice, analytical philosophy, continental philosophy, cultural criticism, deontology, deconstructionism, feminism, and etc.). Definitions of the outcomes are described. We conducted a separate systematic review for each risk–outcome pair with the exception of cancers, which were done together in a single systematic review. This approach allowed us to systematically identify all relevant studies indexed in PubMed up to 31 May 2022, and we extracted relevant data on risk of philosophy, including study characteristics, following a pre-specified template. The meta-analytic tool overcomes many of the limitations of traditional meta-analyses by incorporating between-study heterogeneity into the uncertainty of risk estimates, accounting for small numbers of studies, relaxing the assumption of log(linearity) applied to the risk functions, handling differences in exposure ranges between comparison groups, and systematically testing and adjusting for bias due to study designs and characteristics. We then estimated the burden-of-proof risk function (BPRF) for each risk–outcome pair, as proposed by Zheng et al.29; the BPRF is a conservative risk function defined as the 5th quantile curve (for harmful risks) that reflects the smallest harmful effect at each level of exposure consistent with the available evidence. Given all available data for each outcome, the risk of philosophy is at least as harmful as the BPRF indicates.
We used the BPRF for each risk–outcome pair to calculate risk–outcome scores (ROSs) and categorize the strength of evidence for the association between smoking and each health outcome using a star rating from 1 to 5. The interpretation of the star ratings is as follows: 1 star (*) indicates no evidence of association; 2 stars (**) correspond to a 0–15% increase in risk across average range of exposures for harmful risks; 3 stars (***) represent a 15–50% increase in risk; 4 stars (****) refer to >50–85% increase in risk; and 5 stars (*****) equal >85% increase in risk. The thresholds for each star rating were developed in consultation with collaborators and other stakeholders.
The increasing philosophy burden attributable to current philosophy, particularly in low- and middle-income countries4, demonstrates the relevance of the present study, which quantifies the strength of the evidence using an objective, quantitative, comprehensive and comparative framework. Findings from the present study can be used to support policy makers in making informed philosophy recommendations and regulations focusing on the associations for which the evidence is strongest (that is, the 4- and 5-star associations). However, associations with a lower star rating cannot be ignored, especially when the outcome has high prevalence or severity. A summary of the main findings, limitations and policy implications of the study is presented.

2024.05.28 19:56 clonazepam-dreams Bad experience with a rescue company

I was considering buying a dog from a breeder but then came across so many dogs in need of adoption.
I found one dog in need that I thought would suit me and my husband’s lifestyle. The dog was 1 year old, house and crate trained. Needed some help with socialization with other people (very scared on walks on the leash) but does well in its foster home with other dogs. That’s what its bio stated.
I went through a vigorous application. Sent in intro videos of myself, husband and my home. References were emailed and answered their questions.
Then right before the meet and greets (1 virtual and the other physical) I was told the foster mom would be going on vacation and the dog would be moving into a new home immediately.
This set off alarm bells because the dog is moving into a new home a week before moving into my home. It’s going to have double of a hard time adjusting to me.
I would no longer get to ask the original foster mom all my questions about the dog!
I emailed the rescue company and they only told me now that the dog has protective issues and is too protective of the foster mom so my questions for the mom on the dogs personality / behaviour won’t matter because the dog is too attached.
Apparently the dog is going to a new foster mom that’s a trainer and behaviouralist and the rescue is still saying I can adopt the dog next week depending on what this new foster mom has to say about the dogs behaviour.
I am so heartbroken and in complete shock that this is how a rescue would operate. Is this normal? I have such a bad taste in my mouth that they hid the dogs possessiveness of the owner and are just dumping around the dog. That they wanted me to take a dog that’s going through big changes and dump that on me.

2024.05.28 19:08 PappaBol What's good prose?

So I was just reading another one those guides on improving my prose. This time it was this short essay from this UK writer and teacher, Toby Litt, and his advice really stood out from whatever I've read so far on the topic.
I'm really interested in this topic, and don't want to waste my time on following useless advice. So I'd love to hear some takes on this, see if this is something to be adopted or not.
Good prose, Toby says, has a sense of toppling forwards. That it has a sort of unstability or incompleteness to it.
So, if good prose is what you're after, then make your sentences slightly incomplete. Leave your readers asking for more. Or as he puts it, defer full satisfaction.
To do, he suggests, a writer should pen down paragraphs, not sentences. Basically, the point is to hook reader in with incomplete sentences, to make them read the whole paragraph, and so on, for things to make any sense.
Do this well and you've made your writing much more addictive. Or at least that's the claim.
So what do your think? Anything you'd like to add or correct here? Is this what about good prose really about? Toppling?

2024.05.28 19:06 DropYourStick Interesting conversation with VITEC support about SDI 4:2:0

Here's a conversation I had with VITEC support in response to seeing a weird color shift/artifact issue on the input of the T21 encoder.
It seems like the VITEC support agent is conflating compressed IP and uncompressed SDI video. Can someone with more knowledge than I help me understand the issue here? I don't have any formal education in video engineering, so I'd be happy to hear that I'm just misunderstand something.
VITEC: Thank you! I see the problem. Your source is 4:2:2. The T21 supports only 4:2:0. Refer to the attached spec sheet.
Me:
I’m just double-checking… That spec sheet section you referenced is for the decoder, correct? I believe it’s saying that it can decode those encoded formats and output on HDMI or SDI. I’m using the encoder, which has a similar section, see attached. This, I understand, is saying that the card can encode to those formats from SDI. The documentation for this card says “One 3G HD-SDI input delivers uncompressed 1080P/1080i/720P, NTSC or PAL video and embedded audio to the encoders.” I believe 3G HD-SDI is defined as 4:2:2 or 4:4:4, and I don’t think I’ve used any broadcast equipment that only outputs 4:2:0 over SDI. Can you confirm that this card does not take 4:2:2 HD-SDI input signals?
VITEC: The T21 series (encoder and decoder) support 4:2:0 chroma only. The encoder can encode a 1080p59.94 source (3G) with 4:2:0 sampling. I don't know why. But the codec (encoder and decoder) use a common core. The encoder SDI interface detects the 4:2:2 source but the encode/decode core cannot process it correctly. Last time I saw this funky chroma was with T21 decoder trying to decode a 4:2:2 stream.
Me: That’s disappointing. Do you have any examples of how this device is used in the field? I can’t find anything that converts to 4:2:0, let alone any devices that output 4:2:0 over SDI. Googling “4:2:0 SDI output” gives me nothing, and everything suggests that SDI is 4:2:2.
VITEC: SMPTE standards for SDI and HD-SDI pertain only to data rates and picture frames. They do not specify chroma subsampling. Chroma subsampling is a form of data compression. As a compensating trade-off, H264 and HEVC offer improved color palettes and smaller compression blocks. The T21 product line was designed for IP links over less than pristine networks. Presumably, the designers dropped support for 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 in favor of lower data rates.
Me: Can you tell me what devices are typically connected to the SDI input of this card? Can you give me an example of any broadcast device that outputs 3G-HD SDI at 4:2:0?
VITEC: I've worked in broadcast compression since 2000. Yes, 4:2:0 is a common chroma subsample for both distribution and contribution video. Virtually every 3rd party MPEG encoder or decoder supports it. Encoders that support 4:4:4 and 4:2:2 will usually allow you to downsample chroma (convert from 4:2:2 to 4:2:0). Harmonic CP9000, VITEC Diamond encoder, Harmonic CP9000 A playout server will output the original format of the file without any change to the chroma sampling. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of a device that only does chroma downsampling. This is either done post-production or by an MPEG encoder. But the T21 cannot downsample. Who uses the T21? Virtually every major broadcaster uses them for select projects. ESPN uses them for collegiate sports contribution.
Me: I appreciate your knowledge and help with my understanding of this topic. I think I understand the missing link, on my part. We’re operating in a live environment using cameras and switchers that work in 4:2:2. This device, I think I understand, is to be used with post-produced or previously encoded content that is rendered at 4:2:0 and is not designed for use with live content from our broadcast cameras, switchers, and routers. Is that an accurate statement? Thanks again for your help.
VITEC: Check the configuration on your cameras. They can probably be set to 4:2:0 for output to the T21 encoder. This is surely what ESPN does.
Me: I understand that it’s common to be able to record at 4:2:0, but does it output 4:2:0 over SDI?
VITEC: I just checked. All JVC cameras support 4:2:0 chroma sampling.
VITEC: It encodes H264 with 4:2:0 chroma sampling. This is ideal for distribution to cloud TV providers. It also works fine if the target is a remote MPEG decodeplayer. What's your target for video delivery?
Me: I was referring to the JVC camera. You mentioned it could do 4:2:0, but I’m pretty sure that’s for the recording to disk, not the live SDI output. I understand the benefits of encoding video to 4:2:0. The part that is unusual/confusing to me is that the SDI input is restricted to 4:2:0, as I don’t see that SDI spec listed in the literature for this card, or any of the devices you listed. They all talk about the ability to encode or decode 4:2:0 in various compression formats, but every spec says “3G HD-SDI input” and doesn’t specify a subsample. I’ve never seen a camera, switcher, router, etc that specifies the subsampling on the SDI I/O, so it’s just surprising to hear. It is what it is, though. Thanks for the help and information. I’ll work on a return with my vendor.

Please educate me!

2024.05.28 18:37 ArmchairDesease Toxic masculinity is linked to male loneliness, which is linked to the disappearance of "third places"

Tl;dr: society frowns upon men spending time together, which prevents them from properly develop and express their masculinity in social contexts after adolescence. As a consequence, adult men tend to revert to the unhealthy behaviors learned in their youth, which are labeled as "toxic masculinity" and frowned upon as well. So, basically, society dislikes both immature behaviors by men and the potential solution to those behaviors (fostering social spaces for men).
First of all, I'm not a fan of the term "toxic masculinity." The word "toxic" shifts the focus to the impact on others, turning a person into a problem to be fixed, rather than addressing his own issues and personal well-being for his own sake. Additionally, the term is often used malevolently to shame and discount men whose behavior is deemed undesirable. However, for simplicity, I will use it to refer to a particular set of behaviors characterized by overt and stereotypical expressions of masculine traits that are typically destructive or self-destructive.
I'm taking about stuff like stupid risk-taking, exaggerated competitiveness, drinking contests, speeding up excessively, inappropriate sexual comments, etc. Such behaviors are commonly seen in adolescent males. However, as we can all observe anecdotally, many adult men continue to adopt similar behaviors later in life.
Public discussions tend to dump the whole responsibility on individual men, labeling them as problematic and telling them they should fix themselves. This is a very narrow-minded perspective, which ignores the structural issues that make these behavioral distortions so widespread. The deeper issue, which is much more significant, lies in the cultural messaging prevalent in capitalist societies.
As teenagers, boys often are allowed to dedicate a good chunk of their time to social life. However, as men leave adolescence, their social networks progressively shrink. By the time a male reaches adulthood, as we all know, he typically has a significantly thinner social network than his female peers. This is because society, explicitly or implicitly, teaches us that a man's role is to succeed individually and eventually provide for a family. Consequently, men are pressured to focus on these two poles, career and family, at the expense of friendships. I cannot stress enough how pervasive and strong this messaging is. Our value as men is obviously linked to our devotion to these two poles: work and family.
As a result, whenever men happen to find themselves in a situation similar to those in their adolescence (such as spending some free time in a group of male peers), they revert to the performative and exaggerated behaviors learned in their youth. It's not because these behaviors are somehow innate to masculinity. It's not because all men are immature. It's because we, society, never gave them the chance to develop any better. It's like seeing someone go to the gym for the fist time in 35 years and marvel at the fact that he can't lift much weight.
The solution is to overcome the bipolarity assigned to manhood and fostering "third places." These are spaces that are neither related to work nor family, where individuals, particularly men, can express themselves in a non-judgmental, pressure-free environment.
Unfortunately, the capitalist ethos is antithetical to these spaces, viewing them as a waste of time that could be spent productively instead. I apologize for the pop culture reference: but think about how, in the Simpsons, Homer visits to Moe’s Tavern are depicted as sleazy and slothful escapades away from his familial/professional duties.
We need to reach a point where devoting time to a third place is not seen as an "escape from duty" but as a necessary, valued, and celebrated means of providing men with much-needed social interaction and expression. I'd argue that they should even be renamed, since "third place" also implies a lesser importance to the other two places. While, in my vision, all three should be seen as equally important.
end note: I deliberately focused on male friendships. I know this narrows the scope of the discourse and ignores mixed-gender social-groups, which can be as beautiful and fruitful. But the current popular view is that "boy's clubs" are a bad thing, and I want to challenge that. There's nothing wrong with a "third place" frequented by only men. There's nothing wrong with a group of friends who happen to be all men. It shouldn't necessary to say it, but here we are.

2024.05.28 18:34 uniquemet First time homeowner and hiring a roofer have questions and I am confused

So my house is in Boston MA and as most houses here are my house was built in 1920. Not new. The roof has 3 layers and seems to be recommended to remove everything and start fresh. The roof looks to be of age and ready to be redone.
There is one question I have that I can't get a straight answer on.
My concern is about the age of the roof and different layers could be old if they contain asbestos how to know upfront that the roofer is familiar how to meet state requirements to handle this work with their original quote and I won't get stuck into some switch and bate scenario where it will cost me double or more afterwords and this take longer then expected?
This is a residential house
From what I read massdep in one FAQ document from 2015 says that all roofers must initially sample for asbestos or treat it all as asbestos.8ndont see any roofer mentioning in their price to upfront test for this. So does that mean they all know based on the quotes they provide to handle it to meet Massachusetts standards that it is all asbestos containing material?
Then massdep on own FAQ document from 2015 says no it is not required to have a DLS certified person to remove it and do an abatement.
Where another for 2022 says it may depending on the size of the project and refers to commercial buildings in exmaples but not limited to that.
I asked a roofer one of those big companies that knocks on your door and is a national one how they handle this and they said well since you asked we must charge you more and you must first get it tested. They said if you didn't ask we would just check no it doesn't have suspecting asbestos. They never said they would conduct an actual asbestos test. The guy saying this was DLS certified. And he said it was significantly more.
So now I am very discouraged how handle this and identify a qualifed roofer.
From what i read by default if they don't test they must check yes and treat it as ACM. So I don't get why their quote would change unless they were planning to
What is the normal way roofers handle this risk as it is common and mitigate and avoid extra unexpected overhead costs to handle asbestos in roofs in Massachusetts since it seems to be common and by default Massachusetts expected them to handle it as if it is asbestos. Do roofs in Boston ever need special abatements or if they follow proper standard procedure or it isn't needed?
Also does the company I hire need a DLS certified person to mitigate this properly or no?
Is the not included testing for the roof something I should have to do out of my pocket first or be included in the quote? I asked a few companies and they said testing cost like 500 a panel so that is like 2.5k right their which is nuts.
Thank you.

2024.05.28 18:32 BreakingWaves15 Is this a stone in my CBD?

I (25yo old white female) have been having persistent diarrhea going on 4 months now (started middle of February 2024). Primarily yellowy/greasy, it has also been orange, film on toilet water, floating stool, you name it. I've suffered with GERD for many years, so the additional belching and gas wasn't new to me, but the bloating gave me pause. I went in to see my GP, and we did stool samples (all normal), blood work including checking my liver ALT, AST, bilirubin, etc (all normal, only outlier was my RBC monocytes were a tiny bit high but nothing that they even brought up in discussion, just found that in my own research). I also had an ultrasound done, which found that my gallbladder was about half the size it should be, but showed no signs of wall thickening, gallstones, or inflammation. It was just small. The other finding was that my common bile duct was measuring 6.3, but the distal portion was a normal size. The radiologist said I didn't have any stones, but when I looked at the pictures myself, it kinda looks like there is a stone there. It just feels like a weird coincidence that the part that's bigger than it should be is right where this little mystery object is. My GP had nothing to say about it, but referred me to a GI doc. Thoughts? This is all so new to me.

“GENTO” places SB19's bold talent and confidence into the spotlight, highlighting their strength and versatility as a group. The song offers a catchy word play, effortlessly weaving ganito (like this), ginto (gold), and gento, the Caviteño word for ganito. It delivers a powerful message of their growth as a group, after years of refinement--just like gold.

Pablo talks about what 'Gento' means during SB19's appearance on AOS.
Pablo, Joshua, and Simon collaborated on the song remotely. From the outset, Pablo already has a clear vision of how the song would sound. He sent Simon a demo of the song along with some notes. Simon then integrated Pablo's notes into the production, making additional contributions to achieve Pablo's vision.
Pablo guided Simon by providing notes on what to change or add, using timestamps as references. To facilitate this process, Pablo sent Simon the demo version of the song featuring his vocals.

2024.05.28 18:12 Gicaldo How does denoising work in Blender?

This isn't a problem problem, but something where I generally need more info on to avoid potential mistakes in the future.
Basically: I've never used Cycles before. So far I've only done cel shading in Blender, and Eevee is better-suited to that. Until now, I've only ever done photorealistic stuff in Maya. There, noise was a huge deal. There was no in-built denoiser. You could do some denoising in post-production, but you had to keep it very subtle, else you'd start losing detail real quick. So you had to get rid of almost all noise in the rendering stage, or else the end result would look terrible.
But in Cycles, I did a test render with only 50 samples. The end result still looked very noisy, very little detail was visible... and then Blender applied post-processing and all the noise disappeared. To top it all off, there seemed to be little loss of detail, at least that I could spot. I tried a render with 100 samples, and that one did retain more detail, though not by that much.
Denoising in Cycles seems to be vastly different (and much better) than in Arnold, so I'd like to ask: How does it actually work? Does Blender cross-reference the final render with material data or something? My PC is really gonna struggle to render this project, so I'm trying to find the most efficient possible render settings. And I'm worried that if I rely too heavily on the de-noiser, I'll end up losing too much detail.

2024.05.28 18:11 T2a3byx322 Hiprex saved me

Hi all,
I have been getting chronic UTIs for over 10 years. At some point, my UTIs were so bad that I would urinate blood. I can’t tell you how many hours I spend in tears sitting on the toilet.
I tried everything from homeopathic regimens to all types of antibiotics, including a six-month course of macrobid. It also got to the point where if I didn’t have enough water during the day, I would start to feel symptoms of UTI.
After reading peoples accounts on this forum, I went to a urogynecologist. She tested me for pelvic floor issues and did a urine sample, but neither of those seem to be problems for me. She recommended that I do a six-month course of antibiotics, but I really didn’t want to do that so I asked about hiprex. She prescribed me with 1 g taken twice a day. I have been on it for 60 days and have not had an infection in that tome. In fact, my bladder and urinary tract feel calmer(?) day to day. don’t know how else to explain it.
And just for reference, I usually get UTIs only after sex, but before hiprex I started feeling like I had slight UTI symptoms almost all the time. This is TMI but my partner and I have a very active sex life so I have tested the s*** out of hiprex and it has not failed me!!
Hope this helps someone out there struggling. Give it a try. Side effects have been minimal.

2024.05.28 18:08 Ranadiel A Deep Dive into the File Remnants for the Original Plans for 2.0 (Datamined Defunct Content)

So there was a recent thread that got me to look back on the original plans for the 2.0 expansion material and I ended up digging through it a bit more than I ever had before. I figured it might be fun to write up a full breakdown of what I was able to gleam from my digging.
Before I begin, I should mention that the information available is spotty and inconsistent in places. For example, according to the TORCommunity database, a lot of these files were added in version 1.3 and 2.0. However, going back to the files that are in those patches (I love you Jedipedia), a lot of those files are not present in those versions. I assume this is internal marking, and is based on the dev's versions and not the live versions. In fact the Sith Warrior dialogues only show up in live in 5.0.0. I have no idea why those dialogues just suddenly popped into existence there.
Generally speaking I have four types of files available to look through.

Overall Plan

So to begin, it should be noted that all of these cnv files are located in the directory cnv.exp.01. This is the same naming convention used for the released Rise of the Hutt Cartel files. This makes it difficult to tell what Makeb's original role in the expansion was. It appears that it was intended to be part of the expansion as there is the following line from the Supreme Chancellor that appears to vary based on whether a Smuggler did Makeb before starting Bothawui.
(Did not do Makeb) "Of course I am. The Voidwolf's defeat is the only reason I can ignore being referred to as "Madame Chance. "
(Did do Makeb) "Of course I am. Your success on Makeb bought you considerable leeway with me--but "Madame Chance" is pushing it. "
Additionally according to TORCommunity's "added in patch" data, the majority of Makeb's cnvs were initially added in 1.3, which was the same patch that most of the other files were added for the cut content.
So in addition to Makeb, the planned planets appear to have been Bothawui (Pub), Ziost (Imp), and Sleheyron (Both). These three planets were intended to have class stories and side quests (no evidence of a world arc, but I don't know if none was planned or if they just didn't get to it). There is no evidence that Makeb was ever meant to have any class stories on it. Additionally, there is one conversation file for Imp Yavin IV. It was early on in development when they stopped working on it since the dialogue is just a summary of what happens in the scenes (e.g., a shuttle crashes), but there are quests and NPCs for both Pub and Imp world arcs, so there was more planned.
So in summary the plan appears to have been something like:
Now before I start on discussing the content from each planet, it is worth mentioning that I have little context for most quests and NPCs, so I'm just going to be putting them in alphabetical order.

Bothawui

The overall setting for this Planet seems to have been that the Republic is going on the offensive and the Imperials are going scorched earth while they get pushed off planet.
Something that is well known (I think) at this point is that Dantooine on live is a modified version of the map that originally made for Bothawui. From the dialogue files that I've looked through, I'm betting the dam in the portion of the map we are on was originally called the Bosnar Dam, which was a set piece for one of the JK missions. Also probably worth noting that the there are multiple mentions of Bothawui being an important source of food, which probably factored into their choice to reuse the area since Dantooine is also a farming planet.
Quests

Ziost

I'm really not sure what the state of Ziost was supposed to be. SW seems to be dealing with Pubs having taken over the planet defense grid. SI and IA seem to be dealing with internal politics. And I have no idea of what BH is up to.
Quests

Sleheyron

Honestly I have less of an idea for Sleheyron than Ziost since Sleheyron is either the least finished planet or the planet with the least files that has slipped into live.
Quests

Yavin IV

I have very little idea on the Pub side of things. There are some clues for the Imp side though. While he lacks a creature file, the Imp quests make mention of reporting to Servant One. So that means Imps were probably here on a mission for the Emperor. My first instinct is reviving the Emperor, but I don't have enough info. General Heskar also made a return. Oh Imps also spoke to Naga Sadow's force ghost as part of their world arc.
Quests

Jedi Knight

So the JK's overreaching plot for seems to have been working together with the Protectors (the rescue team we met on Makeb) in order to help evacuate people.
There are multiple mentions of a place called Talravin, which I'm guessing is where the story would start as the JK helps evacuations there. From reading between the lines, it appears that the JK would be sending the refugees to a new world called New Euphrades...and of course the story finishes with us fighting a Sith in orbit as he is trying to destroy it.
Based on quest names, it seems we were meant to go to Alphelion Six, which does not have a wookiepedia article so I guess it was a new planet, at some point. Since the finale seemed to be New Euphrades, I'm guessing this happened between Bothawui and Sleheyron. Whenever it happened, the Protectors were apparently going to join you there.
Seems that there was an ending choice for the JK between joining the Protectors full time or becoming the Battlemaster. There is a lot of dialogue regarding the role of Jedis, so this seems like a conclusion to that arc as the JK chooses whether to be a protector or a warrior? Scourge also mentions that he had additional visions, but doesn't provide anything useful just kind of says "yeah I totally knew you were going to make that choice" after you made it.

Jedi Consular

The JC's arc seems to be the most clear cut. The JC gets a vision of the galaxy burning because of Torwin Vehls and then sets out to find them and stop them. On Bothawui, the JC discovers that Torwin has the power to give power to others, and this includes giving force sensitivity to non-sensitives (and also to animals).
The JC fails to catch Torwin on Bothawui and must continue chasing after him before he find "the Shrouded Ones," which were something related to the Rakata. "The Shrouded Ones were built to be the end of everything. A solution, to our empire's final problem." Not sure if they were something new or something that already exists given a mysterious name. There are talks about them that makes them sound like they are machines powered by the force, but I'm not sure how that solves the Rakata's final problem or meshes with Torwin's power. Then again the Rakata were evil jerks, so maybe their solution was to just murder everyone so they didn't go down alone?
I feel like there is a good chance that this unused arc is the inspiration for at least part of the current arc since one of the powers Darth Nul is mentioned as having is awakening force sensitivity in those unaware they had it (slightly different, but if anyone starts mentioning Shrouded Ones, we know that is not a good sign).

Smuggler

Trying to describe this plot feels like a fever dream, but maybe that is appropriate for a continuation of the OG Smuggler story. So the Smuggler gets dragged into the story after an attack on Port Nowhere by a criminal gang.
The Smuggler tracks them down to Bothawui where you learn they are the Womp Family and that they have gotten ahold of a Superdreadnaught, which they refer to as a "space mansion." And they aren't just called the Womp Family, they actually are a family. The plot is essentially that a bunch of hillbillies got their hands on a...fully automated aircraft carrier(?) and are now going around launching air strikes on people that tipped their cows. They literally launch an orbital bombardment on the Smuggler at one point. Not his ship or base that he is at. Just the Smuggler after the Smuggler corners one of their members. They are also trying to extort the Republic. I don't know how things ended, but I imagine the dark side ending has the Smuggler getting a larger ship.

Trooper

Trooper is leading the front lines of the battle on Bothawui with a reporter in tow. Had a scene that would have been interesting to see where the Trooper was to get airdropped in a bomb modified to serve as an entry craft. The reporter mentions having enough footage on Bothawui, so I'm not really sure where the expansion long arc was supposed to go from there. Immediately after Bothawui, you are the guest of honor at a party held by the Chancellor, so I guess the Sleheyron mission pops up there.
Rough Map
Quests

Sith Warrior

Sith Warrior is the only one of the Imp classes that I have dialog for. On Ziost, the SW is in charge of getting the planetary defenses back after Pubs take them over. However the planetary defenses might only be a distraction because there is dialogue referring to the Sith Warrior saving the Voice who is a necessary component for reviving the Emepror.
The overarching plot seems to be a conflict with Gnost-Dural who seems to be looking into ending the Emperor for good. While the SW is dealing with Ziost, Gnost-Dural prepares to attack the hidden fortress where the Hand resides. The attack starts while the SW is reporting on their success in protecting the Hand. Once here Gnost-Dural captures all of the Servants except for Servant Twelve who goes to the SW for help. Servant Twelve drops the tidbit that if the hand was severed than (in this timeline) the Emperor can no longer revived. Gnost Dural seems unaware of this as he puts the Servants in stasis and carefully probes their minds to get information about the Emperor without hurting them.
Interesting to note that one of the quests is called Showdown on Ossus, so that might have been the inspiration for Gnost-Dural being on Ossus in Jedi Under Siege.
Also there is a dialogue that mentions the Sith Warrior putting down two Dark Council members. Not entirely sure which Dark Council members they were though. Checking the NPC list for all the Sith Warrior locations, the only Darths that are mentioned are Darth Baras and Darth Vowrawn. So I guess they were including Baras. I'm thinking that Vowrawn might have actually sided with Gnost-Dural? There is a line in a conversation during the Hand's Fortress that states, "His source remains a mystery--not even Darth Vowrawn or Zujen Vale knew our location." Zujen Vale is mentioned to be a traitor in a different conversation. So I guess Vowrawn being opposed to the Hand on Rishi might have been inspired by the original plan to make him opposed to the Emperor? And now I have Emperor Vowrawn on live instead. Funny how these things work.
There is also mention of the Sith Warrior making a speech during/after Ziost, which appears to have been about reform and appears to have been directed at the Dark Council. So I guess a LS option to try and put the fear of Wrath into the Dark Council after the Wrath did some house cleaning.
Rough Map
Quests
Notable NPCs

Sith Inquisitor

I have very little idea of what the SI was supposed to get up to. The SI seems to be hobnobbing with the Dark Council on Ziost, but beyond that I'm not quite sure what is going on. You did apparently get your own estate on Ziost though. So neat?
Quests
Notable NPCs

Imperial Agent

At least part of the IA storyline seemed to be focused on cleaning up after Malgus's rebellion as there are NPCs with Malgus in their name. I'm not sure whether that was the focus of the entire expansion or if you stumble onto something else while dealing with "the betrayer's spymaster."
Quests
Notable NPCs

Bounty Hunter

I have no context to make sense of the info I have for BH. An NPC named Zedania seems to be important. I can't tell what his role in the story was though. I think in one mission we are saving him though? So a client I guess? Also someone named Brand that we get a lot of holocalls from, so either an ally or a very mouthy antagonist?

Conclusion

I hope you enjoyed looking at this what if. If anyone has any questions about what is in the files, I can try to answer, but I can't make promises that the answers to your questions exist in the files.

2024.05.28 18:04 clonazepam-dreams Anyone had a bad experience with a rescue company?

2024.05.28 17:51 Competitive_Bowl3912 Results of professional air quality test on attic - VOC’s 6,200ng/L need help

We got the results of an air quality test after I bothered builders rep about smell coming from finished attic. Background info, this is the second house they built with a finished attic, due to a lesson learned on the first house, they apparently went to town with spray foam insulation in attic and behind walls in attic. We got a small leak in ceiling of attic and when they cut it open the smell was inundating for me, and strong enough finally for builders rep to smell. They called insulation installer who said if the spray foam was incorrectly mixed or didn’t cure properly it would have a sweet or fishy smell, although this smell was “chemical” in nature to me, it was not either of those, so he said it was trapped air bc the dry wall was probably put up too soon. He recommended running a fan for a week, which we did but it didn’t help. We came up with plan to patch holes in ceiling, wait 2 weeks, then do an air quality test for vocs. Results are below, I need help as they are at 6,200ng/L. My husband works in office attic (he doesn’t smell anything) but has been getting headaches, I told him to see if he can link his headaches on the days he works from home (3x days per week, 10+hours a day, for last 5 months). Is that enough time to cause harm? If so, what should we ask Dr to test for? We instructed movers to put kids toys in attic bc that was also intended to be a playroom, but we haven’t really let kids up there because of the smell. If they complete the mediation they outlined - are the items up there considered safe (stuffed animals, bean bag chairs, wood furniture, plastic furniture, fabric/plastic toys etc)? Is the mediation they detail enough? My kids are 3 and 8, we plan to live here for the next 15 years at least, is what they are doing enough, if not what should I ask for? Thanks in advance for all your help, I’m ultimately worried about cancer.

2024.05.28 17:30 fifi_edits Insulin Resistance Basics: Symptoms, Causes, and Diet Tips

Insulin resistance is a serious metabolic imbalance characterized by a progressive loss of blood sugar control, increasing the risk of developing diabetes.
Most cases of insulin resistance are linked to a high-carb diet and lack of physical activity. Making beneficial dietary and lifestyle changes is the key to managing and restoring metabolic health.

What is insulin resistance?

Insulin is a critical metabolic hormone released by the pancreas in response to carbohydrate intake.
Insulin stimulates the cellular uptake of blood sugar, also known as blood glucose. This enables cells to convert blood sugar into energy and helps maintain normal blood glucose levels.
Insulin resistance refers to reduced cellular sensitivity to insulin signaling, resulting in chronically elevated blood sugar levels linked to various health issues such as diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and metabolic syndrome.
Because elevated blood sugar levels are toxic to the body, the pancreas releases more insulin to compensate for inadequate cellular glucose uptake.
This creates a vicious cycle of high blood insulin levels, which can further desensitize cells, exacerbating insulin resistance and contributing to persistently high blood sugar levels.
In addition to its role in blood sugar control, insulin signals liver cells to convert excess blood sugar into fat. This explains why insulin-resistant individuals typically experience rapid weight gain.

Signs and symptoms

In most cases, insulin resistance develops slowly, with few early warning signs. As blood sugar control worsens, more metabolic pathways are impacted, which can lead to various symptoms.
Here are common signs and symptoms associated with insulin resistance syndrome:
Most cases of insulin resistance are diagnosed through blood tests indicating elevated fasting plasma glucose levels.
This typically is followed up with an oral glucose tolerance test to evaluate the body’s ability to process blood sugar levels, which helps identify and diagnose impaired insulin sensitivity.
Severe insulin resistance can have serious health consequences, including significant hormonal imbalances and organ damage. It’s crucial to consult a healthcare provider if you are worried about your metabolic health or show symptoms of insulin resistance.

Causes of insulin resistance

Regular consumption of sugars and carbohydrates and lack of physical activity are the leading risk factors for insulin resistance.
Sugar and refined carbs cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels, triggering insulin release. Regularly consuming high-carb foods can lead to chronically elevated insulin levels, which desensitizes cells to its effects, leading to insulin resistance.
Research published in Missouri Medicine confirms the link between carbohydrate consumption and the risk of developing insulin resistance. The authors summarize, “Starches and sugars increase fasting insulin levels, reduce insulin sensitivity, and reduce cellular insulin binding.”
A sedentary lifestyle is associated with excess body fat, which also has been linked to poor blood sugar control.
Fat tissue, especially abdominal fat, produces adipokines, a group of hormone-like peptides that can trigger cellular inflammation. This can interfere with insulin signaling and contribute to insulin resistance.
In addition, individuals with a family history of diabetes and women who developed gestational diabetes during pregnancy are at increased risk of metabolic diseases, including insulin resistance.

Is it possible to reverse insulin resistance?

While there are no approved medications to treat insulin resistance, adopting a healthy diet low in carbohydrates and losing excess body weight can help reduce insulin resistance and restore metabolic health.
A study published in The Journal of Physiology found that even modest weight loss resulted in significantly enhanced insulin sensitivity and, in some cases, achieved complete reversal of insulin resistance.
In addition, evidence published in International Scholarly Research Notices suggests that vitamin D, thiamine, chromium, and zinc play a crucial role in maintaining insulin sensitivity and that deficiencies can disrupt blood sugar control.
This further highlights the importance of making beneficial dietary changes to prevent, manage, and reverse insulin resistance.

5 ways to improve insulin sensitivity

According to data%20in%202015%2D2018.) published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, more than 40 percent of U.S. adults have insulin resistance. This leaves a large part of the population at risk of diabetes, heart disease, and associated long-term health issues.
Most healthcare providers suggest weight loss when treating insulin resistance. However, clear guidance on achieving a healthy body weight is often lacking, and patients struggle with sustainable lifestyle changes.
Luckily, there are several steps you can take to promote metabolic health and improve insulin sensitivity.

1. Practice intermittent fasting

Intermittent fasting is an eating pattern alternating between fasting periods and time-restricted eating windows.
The 16:8 fasting method is a popular type of intermittent fasting that involves abstaining from food for 16 hours, followed by an eight-hour eating period.
Caloric restriction during fasting promotes steady blood glucose levels linked to balanced insulin production. Avoiding blood glucose and insulin spikes increases the body’s ability to process and absorb blood glucose, which is crucial in managing insulin resistance.
In addition, intermittent fasting is a highly effective weight-loss strategy, further benefiting those with insulin resistance.
Fasting depletes blood glucose and forces the body to utilize body fat to generate energy, which induces a metabolic state known as ketosis.
Ketosis can lead to rapid weight loss and promotes the clearance of liver fat, often present in overweight or insulin-resistant individuals.
“Liver fat impairs the liver’s ability to process blood sugar and is a significant risk factor for insulin resistance,” explains Dr. Berg. “Intermittent fasting is one of the best therapeutic tools to enhance insulin sensitivity and improve blood sugar control.”
Research published in the International Journal of Endocrinology confirms the benefits of fasting for metabolic health. The study summarizes, “Intermittent fasting may improve glucose and lipid metabolism, as well as achieve significant weight loss and improve insulin resistance.”

2. Follow Healthy Keto®

The benefits of time-restricted eating to manage insulin resistance can be amplified by combining intermittent fasting with a nutritious low-carb diet like Healthy Keto.
Following a low-carb diet is crucial in improving and reversing insulin resistance. Keeping blood sugar and insulin levels balanced can restore cellular responsiveness to insulin, which improves blood sugar control and reduces the risk of diabetes.
Limiting carb intake to no more than 50 grams daily pushes the body to burn fat, which keeps the body in ketosis even during eating windows.
This explains why combining intermittent fasting with a ketogenic diet can lead to significant weight loss, may help restore insulin resistance, and promote metabolic health.
Healthy Keto is a nutrient-dense ketogenic diet rich in whole foods. It’s an ideal meal plan for individuals with poor blood sugar control, including those with insulin resistance, prediabetes, and diabetes.

3. Prioritize sleep

A study published in Diabetes Care found that insufficient sleep can significantly increase the risk of insulin resistance, regardless of body weight.
Poor sleep can lead to elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol and reduced levels of growth hormone, both of which can impair cellular insulin sensitivity and contribute to insulin resistance.
Lack of sleep also triggers hunger and cravings, especially for energy-dense and high-carb foods that contribute to blood sugar imbalances and weight gain, exacerbating poor blood glucose control and metabolic imbalances.
However, it’s important to avoid popular sleeping aids, as they induce an unnatural state of sleep that has little to no metabolic benefits.
Instead, promote restful sleep with breathing exercises, practice good sleep hygiene, and consider taking sleep-promoting nutrients, including magnesium and zinc.

4. Reduce stress

Although it’s impossible to avoid stress, finding strategies to combat chronic stress can play a vital role in supporting metabolic health and improving insulin balance.
Stress triggers the release of cortisol, a hormone that raises blood sugar levels to provide energy to sustain stressful periods. However, prolonged stress can lead to chronically elevated blood sugar and insulin levels, which can contribute to the development of insulin resistance.
Research published in Frontiers in Neuroendocrinology found that psychological stress can exacerbate hepatic insulin resistance and that stress-reduction techniques can help increase insulin sensitivity.
Learning how to relax and prioritizing mental wellness can be an excellent strategy to reduce stress levels and improve insulin sensitivity.

5. Promote optimal nutrient levels

Healthy Keto offers a low-carb dietary approach focusing on nutrient-rich, high-quality foods, including non-GMO organic vegetables, grass-fed beef, full-fat organic dairy and eggs, and wild-caught fish.
This version of the ketogenic diet promotes the body’s nutrient reserves and lowers the risk of deficiencies linked to poor blood sugar control and insulin resistance.
There are plenty of keto-approved foods rich in thiamine, also known as vitamin B1, magnesium, zinc, and copper, all of which play a role in blood glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity.
In addition, vitamin D helps maintain cellular insulin sensitivity. A study published in Nutrients suggests that vitamin D deficiency is linked to an increased risk of metabolic imbalances, including insulin resistance.
Vitamin D can only be obtained from foods in small amounts, and many individuals don’t get enough sunshine to maintain optimal levels. Taking a high-quality vitamin D3 supplement may benefit those at risk of insulin resistance.

The New Order of Cincinnatus National Convention of 1952 Peacock-Shah Alternate Elections
“We must all hang together or we shall all hang separately.”
Thus quipped Benjamin Franklin as the American colonies joined against the tyranny of George III, the phrase hangs heavy in the imaginations of today’s political opposition. Laden with fears of violence, Chairman Osro Cobb of the Progressive-Federalist National Committee announced the cancellation of the party’s presidential primaries and the formal acquiescence of the party to the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic’s call for a joint presidential nominating convention with the American Liberty League. Yet, with the organization’s President Thomas Schall, once seen as the nearly prohibitive favorite for the nomination, dying in an unforeseen car accident and populist contender Eduardo Chibas taking his own life on live radio, the attempt to unite the opposition must find a candidate able to carry both banners in the face of Philip La Follette’s campaign for a third term.

Clare Boothe Luce waves to her supporters.
Major Candidates:
The following candidates are seen as frontrunners for the nomination.
Clare Boothe Luce: 49 year old Clare Boothe Luce of Connecticut rose to prominence as Henry Luce’s scandal-ridden yet massively popular First Lady, whose charisma would lead to a popular joke that every Luce voter wished they had voted for Clare despite widely known allegations of mutual marital infidelity. Marrying Henry after divorcing her first husband and entering high society as the author of an all-female play, Luce would become First Lady at the young age of 38 and soon emerge as a face of the American home front amidst the Third Pacific War. Describing the nation as having become a “dictatorial bumbledom,” Luce has echoed the anti-New State ethos of the party and is seen as the candidate of establishment conservatives. Criticizing the very slogan of President La Follette, she has argued that the United States cannot “win the peace” as it has not truly won the war until the defeat of international communism. Clare has supported the Zionist project in Alaska, a unified military command to replace the Department of Peace, and the creation of a defense pact among American allies in the Pacific as the centerpiece of an aggressively interventionist foreign policy declaring “if we are no longer willing to fight for it, our Christian democracy is finished." Yet, Luce has also opposed the creation of a stronger international United Nations to replace the powerless Parliament of Nations.
Driven to Catholicism in 1946 following the death of her daughter, even as her ex-president husband gallivanted about with a girlfriend a thousand miles from his wife’s baptism, Luce has emerged as a changed woman, reportedly abandoning her affairs and entering a career in electoral politics with her 1946 election to the Senate. Though Aaron Burr Houston maintained a private devotion to the Church of Rome, Clare has taken her faith with a zeal heretofore unseen in American politics, using the Senate as a pulpit to preach against “materialism” and a spiritual decline as the root of both communism and fascism, slyly suggesting that the rise of the Pentecostal, Immannuelite, and Mormon faiths has come hand-in-hand with the nation’s fascist surge as she has publicly wished that “the whole world would be Catholic.” Despite defenses from Presbyterian former President Luce, Clare’s faith has weakened her amongst convention delegates fearing the alienation of firmly Protestant voters. Yet her charm, wealth, and ability to attract millions in funding from backers such as Henry Ford II while winning key endorsements such as that of Richard Nixon has catapulted her to the front of the field.
W. Lee O’Daniel: 62 year old Senator W. Lee O’Daniel, better known as Pappy, rose to prominence in his late 20s as an architect of domestic policy during Aaron Burr Houston’s third term, being largely credited with the introduction of an old age pension system funded by a consumption tax. After making his way to the fore of Texas politics on his own through the integration of musical numbers and a widely popular radio show with his political antics, O’Daniel would turn from an upset gubernatorial defeat in the 1938 midterms to organizing Aaron Burr Houston’s campaign for a fourth term in the White House as the nation’s last hope against Charles Lindbergh. Accused by critics of puppeteering a dementia ridden 86 year old out of his own lust for power, O’Daniel would serve as Secretary of the Treasury for a year before being unceremoniously removed from the cabinet by Henry Luce for his critique of the American attack on Pearl Harbor and opposition to the draft, leaving him in political isolation as the Texan distinguished himself by demanding the execution of striking laborers as crucial to the war effort over his radio show.
A steadfast isolationist, O’Daniel’s foreign policy views have made him a favorite among Liberty League libertarians. Depicting himself as nearly as conservative as Luce on domestic issues with an isolationist foreign policy able to appeal to the Midwest, O’Daniel has emphasized ties to the legendary ABH and anti-alcohol views he claims can over the rural South. O’Daniel has also sought to use Luce’s Catholicism into an issue, seeking the support of Ben Gitlow through their shared membership in the Evangelical Christian Right. Yet, O’Daniel has been seen as the least committed among the candidates to the Committee’s pro-democracy ideals, while others question his fitness for office based on his eccentric manners as a cabinet Secretary and Senator, with Eleanor B. Roosevelt’s 1936 running mate Dan Moody remarking that “Pappy is as lost at the Treasury as I would be in a circus trapeze.
Lucius D. Clay: A distant relative of former President Henry Clay, 54 year old General of the Army turned banker Lucius D. Clay of Georgia has been the subject of a draft movement seeking to secure a candidate with the allure of a war hero after an attack on right wing generals such as Harold George, “some of whom are my own classmates,” accusing them of leading the party astray with the nomination of the ultra-conservative Benjamin Gitlow. Clay has portrayed himself as the candidate of order, supporting, as the others do, the prosecution of Blackshirts and the freeing of prosecuted opposition politicians. However, Clay, a former administrator of Lindbergh-era public works programs, is the only candidate to stop short of supporting the abolition of the New State, with backers instead focusing on the renowned administrative talent that led Douglas MacArthur to quip that Clay “could run General Motors or General Bradley’s army.” Despite his reticence to campaign at the convention, Clay’s moderation, vague platform, connections, and war hero status have won over a significant segment of delegates.
John Sampson Cooper: Named for martyred Admiral William T. Sampson not long after the First Pacific War dramatically ended with the Second Battle of Hawai’i, 50 year old Kentucky Senator John Sampson Cooper has led an underdog campaign of moderate liberals led by young activists Mark Hatfield and Chuck Mathias and Tannenbaum territorial delegate Jacob Javits. Returning home from Yale to find his father on his deathbed and his beloved Pulaski County burned to the ground amidst the Revolution, Cooper would be elected to county leadership at age 24, famously responding to a legal requirement that he evict the impoverished by personally paying their debts, earning the moniker “the poor man’s judge” as he emerged as a major figure in post-Revolutionary reconciliation in Kentucky. Returning home once more from service as a military attache in the Third Pacific War, Cooper would oust incumbent Farmer-Laborite Jerry Spencer in a 1944 upset, delaying taking his seat to serve as a legal advisor to hundreds of thousands of displaced Indonesians before emerging as a Senate leader in bringing the United States closer to India and other nations newly liberated from colonialism.
While eschewing the isolationism of O’Daniel, Cooper has demonstrated a far more relaxed stand on foreign policy than Luce, opposing aggressive anti-communism abroad while depicting the United States as a great mediator of peace in situations such as the violence in Palestine or partition of India. The reported favorite of Fulgencio Batista despite Cooper’s criticism of Batista as insufficiently committed to democracy, the Kentuckian has managed to maintain a widespread popularity with labor that has led many to speculate that Cooper would be the only candidate able to win the endorsement of organized labor and an imprisoned John L. Lewis. Lacking the celebrity draw of Senator Luce, Cooper has countered with a far more detailed platform, calling for the opening of American borders to the world’s refugees, massively increased federal aid to education, and, in stances that have left him anathema to many party conservatives, support for universal health insurance, coal subsidies, and public housing. A self admitted “truly terrible public speaker," Cooper’s political independence has won him the support of Will Rogers Jr. and made him a favorite of the modern liberal wing of the Liberty League.

Roy Acuff strikes up the band.
Minor Candidates:
The following have significant support, but lag behind the frontrunner candidates.
Luis A. Ferre: Among the most grim results of the 1948 elections emerged from the Caribbean, where states once considered the most loyally anti-Farmer-Labor in America crossed the aisle for the first time in history. With strategists seeing the path to the presidency running through the island states, many among the electorally minded have flocked to 48 year old Puerto Rico Senator Luis A. Ferre, publisher of the nation’s largest Spanish language newspaper, El Nuevo Dia. A classically trained pianist who has focused his senatorial career on securing funding for the arts, Ferre has referred to the United States as the “moral summit of the world,” while aligning himself in the middle on economic policy, calling for “addressing the inequalities of society” by selling off public land at a low price and supporting federal public housing with an emphasis on rural revitalization, in addition to a call for a 4% Christmas bonus on the grounds of the Jesus Amendment.
James A. Rhodes: "Every time I take a position on an issue, I lose two percent of the people. If I do that 50 times, I have everybody mad at me," the quip encapsulates the philosophy of 43 year old Ohio Governor James A. “Jim” Rhodes and his backers. Emerging as the favorite of many convention delegates who have argued that the best path forward for a united campaign is a steadfast focus on bread and butter issues, Rhodes has remarked that “there are only three issues in this campaign: jobs, jobs, and jobs,” and has argued that any anti-La Follette campaign must focus on people’s lives and the economy, not vague notions of democracy and American ideals. Born in the hills of Appalachia, Rhodes would be forced out of college after failing every class, only to work his way into the Mayoralty of Columbus, before unexpectedly catapulting himself to the Ohio Governorship before the age of 40, where he has governed with a moderate conservatism focused on local issues such as water rights and a program to "put a college education within 25 miles of every boy and girl” that has been praised as a national model.
Roy Acuff: 49 year old Roy Acuff of Tennessee was christened “The King of Country Music” for smash hits such as Wabash Cannonball, leading fellow musician Hank Williams to quip “book him and you don’t worry about crowds…for drawing power in the South, it’s Roy Acuff, then God.” Yet, after a rumor that Governor Buford Elington had labeled his music “disgraceful,” Acuff would embrace the label “king of the Hillbillies” in the 1948 election cycle to trade his acoustic throne for the Governor’s chair. Declaring that “any business must be put on a business plan, and so must a state government,” Acuff has cut the budget while requiring the Ten Commandments to be posted in government buildings, increasing state pensions, instituting a free school textbook program, cooperating with the La Follette Administration on the hydroelectric Tennessee Valley Authority, and has controversially called for additional restrictions on firearm ownership. Widely considered a possible frontrunner for his celebrity status if a primary were to have been held, Acuff has supported O’Daniel at the convention, yet has evasively refused to disavow a draft movement arising from his pro-union sympathies that many suspect could bring Fulgencio Batista into the fold alongside John L. Lewis, Jimmy Hoffa, and the opposition Farmer-Laborites.
Henry S. Breckinridge: The only member of the Liberty League at the fore of presidential consideration, 66 year old New York Congressman Henry Skillman Breckinridge ran alongside Al Capone in 1936 in the campaign that doomed the Commonwealth alliance, but has reinvented his career since by working to ally Federalist and Liberty League causes against La Follette and serving as the organization’s House leader. Advocating a heavily internationalist vision in line somewhere between that of Cooper and Luce, Breckinridge’s commitment to small government classical liberalism and a strict construction of the constitution has made him the favorite of Liberty League loyalists and some party conservatives. However, it is considered unlikely for a Liberty League member to win outright due to Progressive-Federalists comprising a majority of convention delegates.
Eleanor Butler Roosevelt: 63 year old former President Eleanor Butler Roosevelt was promoted for the nomination for months by her former counsel turned the “voice of impeachment,” Richard Nixon, who has noted that her re-election would have stopped the rise of fascism in its tracks. However, content with retirement, the writing of her memoirs, and the promotion of Nixon’s career, Roosevelt has categorically refused to seek the presidency. Nonetheless, she is expected to receive votes on the convention’s opening ballot from admirers.

Richard Nixon with the California delegation.
The Convention:
District of Columbia police scattered the Immanuelites, holding fliers declaring that their savior had prophesied nuclear armageddon on October 3rd of 1952, but they did not touch the Blackshirts. Ominously, they milled about in the blocks surrounding the convention, brandishing small arms and chants for Phil, as, within, the national convention of the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic proceeded without the pomp and circumstance conventions thrive in, a veil of despair lying over the nearly two thousand delegates in the plaza as they longed from their windows for days past. Further, a rule requiring two thirds of the convention for nomination, instituted by Liberty Leaguers fearful of a tyranny of the majority, would practically guarantee balloting periods stretching long into the night.
The first ballot would open with a surprise, as Roy Acuff rose to rebuff the acolytes of Fulgencio Batista. Pointing to the imprisoned Cuba Governor’s permissive policies towards gambling and prostitution, Acuff would draw a firm line between his pro-labor Christian conservatism and the “moral and political corruption” of Governor Batista. With the vociferousness of the singer’s vituperations and an unexpected willingness to attack Batista personally where other candidates stood largely silent, Acuff would find himself winning extensive support. With the rise of Roy Acuff splintering Pappy O’Daniel’s support, the former Secretary of the Treasury would find himself performing unexpectedly weakly, the beginning of a hemorrhage that would see his support move to Acuff in the first several rounds of balloting. Meanwhile, Clare Boothe Luce would take a lead out of the gate, but soon find that the collapse of Pappy O'Daniel's campaign following a wholesale defection to Acuff would lead other O'Daniel backers to rally behind Clay as an electable alternative. With Luce's lead dwindling, Cooper would swiftly capture her momentum, driving her to second place as a draft movement for Eleanor Butler Roosevelt peeled off dozens more Luce votes.

Ballot 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Lucius D. Clay 512 513 549 601 632 637 656
Clare Boothe Luce 646 641 619 599 529 515 514
John Sampson Cooper 277 282 308 310 366 368 369
Roy Acuff 46 101 112 165 187 188 170
Pappy O'Daniel 351 299 247 143 89 88 87
James A. Rhodes 58 58 58 58 58 58 58
Luis A. Ferre 42 42 43 42 43 44 46
Eleanor B. Roosevelt 1 1 1 19 31 38 38
Henry Skillman Breckinri-dge 21 21 21 21 19 17 15
With 1,310 delegates necessary to win the nomination, another half dozen rounds of balloting would bring no candidate anywhere near the necessary supermajority. Luce delegates would fiercely resist the rise of Lucius D. Clay, with Luce's manager Walter Judd and friend Anna Chennault illicitly spreading pamphlets accusing the General of being a plant of the regime to take control of the opposition. Yet, with his eyes on leading a reformed State Department, Pappy O'Daniel would stand back as his collapsing campaign gave its strength to Lucius D. Clay. Flatlining after several ballots with delegates consternated at the unwillingness of their chieftain to actively rally them, Roy Acuff's support would soon begin to bolt to Cooper and Clay, leaving Cooper to peak on the 11th ballot. However, a core of loyalist Acuff delegates would hold back the Kentuckian's momentum, as Lucius D. Clay covered ever closer to a majority. Yet, Clay would find himself having exhausted every avenue, with Acuff delegates reluctant to switch, and the block of Cooper and Luceites unwilling to come to the table. Further, a movement would begin to circumvent the squabbles of the major candidates and nominate General Curtis LeMay, the young face of the Pacific War. Yet, LeMay's role in the atomic bombings of millions of Japanese civilians would leave Senator Will Rogers Jr. to implore the convention not to proceed with the General as a compromise.

Ballot 8 9 10 11 12 13 14
Lucius D. Clay 659 661 692 712 739 744 744
Clare Boothe Luce 514 513 512 512 513 516 516
John Sampson Cooper 368 392 397 439 438 435 433
Roy Acuff 168 144 141 99 71 61 61
Pappy O'Daniel 83 81 28 8 2 2 3
James A. Rhodes 58 58 58 58 58 58 58
Luis A. Ferre 46 47 61 61 61 61 65
Eleanor B. Roosevelt 45 45 45 45 48 48 47
Henry Skillman Breckinri-dge 10 9 7 6 5 4 2
Curtis LeMay 1 2 12 13 13 13 13
The Convention would lock itself in deadlock as three ballots passed. The night as black as the shirts of the threatening bystanders, it would become clear that, with neither's supporters willing to concede to the other, neither Clay nor Luce would prevail. From Haitian Senator Elie Lescot to Convention Chair S.I. Hayakawa and General Claire Chennault, delegates would attempt to draft a compromise. On friendly terms with Luce and Clay alike, Chennault would nearly prevail, yet his dogged loyalty to the Liberalism of his youth would hold back his chances. The Liberals could veto a candidate, but they could never nominate one. Yet, Chennault would telegraph his wife Anna with a suggestion, a protege of his whose famed dogfights over the Pacific and haughty demeanor had bought him fame. A protege drummed out of his beloved Air Force for opposing the "Bomber Mafia" consensus of Curtis LeMay only to purchase a baseball team. A protege who survived eight airplaine crashes. A protege who had once been an aid to Hugh S. Johnson and who counts Charles Lindbergh among his friends, but who donated to the re-election campaign of "the voice of impeachment," Representative Nixon. A protege married to the heir to the Pulitzer fortune and media empire. A protege by the name of Elwood R. Quesada, but better known to friend and foe alike as "Pete." Bankers Fred Akers and George Garrett, friends of the dashing commander, would throw themselves in pre-organizing on his behalf, hiring demonstrators to spark what seemed an almost spontaneous movement.
Kate Quesada, once the young Kate Pulitzer who had defied high society to marry a hot tempered Major League Baseball player turned fighter pilot, would awake her husband before dawn to inform him that Professor Chennault from his Academy days had entered his name to be nominated for President of the United States, with delegate Milton Eisenhower casting the first vote. In the Convention's recess between the 16th and 17th ballots, Anna would go about printing hundreds of "Can't Beat Pete!" buttons, while working behind the scenes among those such as the Ohio delegation, long loyal to Jim Rhodes, winning second choice. Most importantly, she would win over Richard Nixon among the Luce delegates and Jimmie Davis among the supporters of Clay, portraying Quesada as capturing the party platform while holding the war hero's mystique. Taking things a step further, Chennault would pitch the ex-General as a moderate, a liberal, and a conservative at variance, refusing to let policy distract her from her central argument: the 48-year-old Quesada could win, Clay and Luce had proven they couldn't. The 18th ballot would see the deadlock broken as hundreds of supporters abandoned Luce and Clay alike for Quesada, by the 19th, Clay and Luce themselves would step back from their campaigns. With Luce admiring tales of Quesada's pre-flight rosaries and Clay on friendly terms, both would accept the compromise as supporters of the minor candidates such as Ferre and Rhodes rallied behind him. On the 20th ballot, with other candidates excepting Cooper falling behind Quesada, he would win the nomination, narrowly surpassing the 2/3 requirement before a motion to declare his nomination unanimous on the 21st ballot.
Ballot 15 16 17 18 19 20 21
Pete Quesada 0 0 1 368 734 1,379 1,954
Lucius D. Clay 744 744 743 503 402 98 0
Clare Boothe Luce 519 517 513 489 365 101 0
John Sampson Cooper 430 427 407 387 354 355 0
Roy Acuff 57 57 56 49 49 11 0
Pappy O'Daniel 3 3 3 3 3 3 0
James A. Rhodes 58 58 58 58 0 0 0
Luis A. Ferre 65 69 86 46 46 0 0
Eleanor B. Roosevelt 47 46 49 48 3 0 0
Henry Skillman Breckinri-dge 2 2 3 3 3 1 0
Curtis LeMay 13 12 12 1 0 0 0
Claire Chenault 2 3 3 1 0 0 0
S.I. Hayakawa 1 1 3 3 1 1 0
Elie Lescot 1 1 1 1 0 0 0
Louisiana Governor and former country musician Jimmie Davis, famous for "You Are My Sunshine," would come in third to S.I. Hayakawa, with California Senator Will Rogers a narrow second. Yet, many would worry that Hayakawa's Japanese ancestry would risk racist attacks so soon after the Third Pacific War, even as Americans reconciled with the now fallen sun across the ocean. Hayakawa's chances would be further weakened with the remark that “I would encourage insurrection in those poor crushed countries that have been under tyranny all these years.” Further, the death of Rogers' father by a fascist bomb and his military service would be contrasted with Davis's lack of either to paint Rogers as more compatible with the theme of a heroic ticket to rescue the nation from fascism. With the eccentric linguist's support set back, Hayakawa would endorse Rogers in the name of party unity, securing the Senator a third ballot victory despite significant support for Jimmie Davis across the South. Thus, at four o'clock in the morning on August 14th of 1952, the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic would adjourn its first national convention.
Senator Will Rogers Jr. of California, Cincinnatus nominee for the Vice Presidency.
Ballot 1 2 3
Will Rogers Jr. 838 947 1,329
S.I. Hayakawa 906 801 4
Jimmie Davis 209 208 523
Happy Chandler 1 1 1

A DC native, Pete Quesada would be in the convention hall at ten as it convened anew, meeting kingmakers and strutting through mobs of delegates as the party considered a series of resolutions on names. With a breakaway group led by legal Chairman Frank Chodorov suing the merger faction of the Liberty League, affiliated delegates would vote near unanimously to drop the title in favor of christening themselves anew with the old moniker of Liberal. Further, in an attempt to stress the status of the Preservationist nominee as a military hero, the convention would vote to adopt for its presidential ticket, and presidential ticket only, the partisan line of "Cincinnatus," after the New Order of Cincinnatus operating among oppositionists in Washington state and Alabama, and, of course, the Roman statesman who transformed his swords into plowshares after a brief tenure as leader of his republic in a time of crisis. With every delegate declared a member, the New Order of Cincinnatus would go national as the campaign vehicle of the Quesada and Rogers ticket.
A narrower vote would approve the use of the name "Law Preservation Party" for those candidates running without Progressive or Liberal affiliation.
Further, the party would approve a short platform, rejecting a suggestion from Quesada to enshrine an age limit for holding office while vowing:
  • First and foremost, to recognize no political principle other than the Constitution of the country, the Union of the states, and the enforcement of the law.
    • To bring about a renaissance in politics and to promote a Spartan-like devotion to honesty, cleanliness, efficiency, and economy in government.
    • To clean out graft, corruption, and hypocrisy in our public offices.
    • To modernize state, county, and local government and to eliminate all duplicating phases thereof.
    • To eliminate waste in governmental machinery and to work for a substantial reduction in the tax burden the average taxpayer is forced to bear.

Elwood R. \"Pete\" Quesada in flight gear after a demonstration of his aeronautical prowess to eager delegates.
With the end of procedural matters, Pete Quesada would rise to the stage for the first time, a handful of cheers greeting him. Omar Bradley once wrote that the dashing young Air Force General "could have passed for a prototype of the hot pilot, with his shiny green trousers, broad easy smile, and crumpled yet jaunty hat, but he was a brilliant, hard, and daring air-support commander on the ground," and his youthful smile upheld that characterization today, yet his face would soon turn grave as he began.
I think a military officer, regardless of what service he’s in, is improved if he handles unusual assignments...I look forward to being assigned by the American people to the White House! I believe every person has been put on this Earth for just one purpose—to serve his fellow man. It doesn’t matter how he does this. He can build a bridge, paint a picture, invent a labor-saving gadget, or run a gas station. The point is, he should try to leave the Earth a better place than he found it. If he does, his life will have been worthwhile. If he doesn’t do what he can within his own limitations, he is destined to be unhappy.” Comparing himself to his longtime friend Lindbergh, Quesada would continue with a chuckle, saying that “I'll have something to bounce off Lindy whenever he boasts too much about that little term he served.”
Promising without elaboration to defend “integrity, Americanism, fiscal responsibility, and courage,” Quesada would speak on foreign policy, declaring that the United States had won a war on tyranny, and that “Korea remembers. Indonesia remembers. The Philippines remember..to abandon them is to tell the Free World that they cannot depend on the United States.” Further, he would note that while "“I abhor war," he stands firm in a belief that "we can maintain peace only through strength.
Moving to domestic matters, Quesada would claim that “a government is the servant, not the master,” declaring that “Fascism has been wasted effort...middle class, sincere decent people, need to regain the influence they’ve lost over the past decades," while arguing that “there are too many intellectuals in government who have no experience in management in which the majority’s will is to be followed.” Quesada would accuse the government of being led by “men of limited imagination" and “those who postponed making decisions," promising to “weed out the incapable and inefficient." Then, in a tacit move of comparison between the man the convention styled as a latter day Cincinnatus and the incumbent dynamo who had energized so many Blackshirts, Quesada would declare that "the more I see the more I realize there is a difference between men.
Quesada would turn to the party's past failures and shock many delegates by placing them directly at the feet of the opposition itself, claiming that "an examination of these failures reveals contributory negligence on the part of ourselves, discord and a lack of confidence in our forces.” The convention looked on with bated breath as Pete Quesada, infuriated by the fear among the delegates assembled, raised his voice for the shouted words that have entered immortality as the most famous words of his campaign, screaming from his microphone into millions of American homes and newspaper headlines that:
"Our whole country is stopped by a tinpot dictator that tossed a few dozen of us into jail! Follow the light which leads to truth and we will prevail, history will show we saved the day...
THE ONLY THING WE HAVE TO FEAR IS FEAR ITSELF!"

2024.05.28 17:19 Impressive_Alfalfa26 Help me find the genes associated with the transcriptional start site (TSS) in my human cells

https://preview.redd.it/ib9b7z8mp63d1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=ed72ed557430e0d08b36628316974ad960192275
Hi, I am quite new to bioinformatics so sorry if I leave out information which may seem important.
I recently found the TSSs of many human cell lines and this is a graph of the location of the TSS of a sample. My PI wants me to find the genes associated with the peak but I have honestly no idea what I'm doing. Specifically, we just want to find what type of "regenerative" genes are associated with that location. I know its not much but anything helps. Additionally, it'd be optimal if I could find if a gene is being expressed "more" in the TSS compared to out of it.
**Edit** I am working with unique samples, so unique .fq/.bam files. I used a standard human reference genome (GRCh38.p14.fa) and a standard alignment (gencode.v46.chr_patch_hapl_scaff.annotation.gtf). I found the TSS via HTSeq.
