Octavia E. Butler is a name I’ve known for some time. Various people, most of whom I don’t know, had recommended her books, particularly Parable of the Talents. It turns out to have been one of the scariest novels I’ve ever read. It’s not horror—it’s science fiction. It’s scary because it’s just too plausible. The first inkling I had that something was amiss was when I read how Andrew Steele Jarret ran for president to “make America great again.” Jarret pretends to be Christian to get the vote and America suffers terribly when he’s elected. I flipped back to the copyright page. 1998. I read on anyway. It’s not too often you find a sci-fi book about someone starting a religion. And named after a biblical story, as well. I was doing fine until Jarret’s supporters destroyed Olamina’s peaceful community and enslaved the survivors.
It’s all just too plausible. Of course, there’s a lot going on here. Butler was an African-American whose ancestors had been slaves. The religions presented in the book are a bit too black-and-white, but the followers of Christian America behave like many followers of Trump. Butler saw this two decades before it happened. The slavery part of the book was difficult to read. There was so much pathos here, so much deep memory. Although Olamina is a flawed character, she is a visionary with the best interest of the human race at heart. This dystopia is perhaps a little too close to reality. Those who recommend the book say that it’s hopeful, so I kept on reading. And yes, there is a hopeful ending. Getting to it left me floored.
Religion defines us. In the growing materialism—false, as anyone who feels deeply knows—the idea that a story could be built around religion seems unlikely. Butler has done that, and done it in spades. I was surprised to learn that she’d studied at the Clarion Workshop, not far from where I grew up. Being from an uneducated family I never heard of the Workshop until I was an adult. And besides, it left Clarion, Pennsylvania for Michigan before I even got to high school. Still, it gives me a sense of connection with a woman who saw more than many did. Although Parable of the Sower is earlier, I’m not sure that I have it in me to pick it up. At least not right away. I’m still trembling a bit from Butler’s second parable.

2024.05.19 13:56 Significant_Camp9024 I know this gets asked a lot but should I look into a slander lawsuit?

About 15 years ago we lived across the street from a couple (we still live in the same subdivision). The husband tried to have an affair with me on multiple occasions. I didn’t accept. For the past 15 years this couple (I know she’s saying this but I’m not sure how much involvement the husband has) has told anyone and everyone I had sex with her husband. Anyway, these rumors greatly affected my reputation, my marriage and have been harmful against my kids. Just recently a 17 year old from my son’s school went around telling everyone he heard that my son is not my husband’s and is the former neighbor’s child. Every year for the last 15 years someone tells me that they heard these rumors. I hoped it would stop but it hasn’t. Does anyone think I have grounds for slander and if so, is it worth all the time, money and aggravation? We live in Michigan. Thank you.

2024.05.19 12:21 LastWeekInCollapse Last Week in Collapse: May 12-18, 2024

Record temperatures, record migration, record emissions, record displacement, record PFAS……start building an ark.
Last Week in Collapse: May 12-18, 2024
This is Last Week in Collapse, a weekly newsletter compiling some of the most important, timely, useful, soul-crushing, ironic, stunning, exhausting, or otherwise must-see/can’t-look-away moments in Collapse.
This is the 125th newsletter! You can find the May 5-11 edition here if you missed it last week. You can also receive these posts (with images) every Sunday in your email inbox with Substack.
——————————
Flash flooding in northern Afghanistan killed 300+ people and destroyed 1,000+ homes. Hundreds of thousands of others have been affected. Last month, similar floods in the region killed 70+. Four died in Texas storms last week as well.
Venezuela is suffering from record wildfires, which so far this year have burned about 5M acres—almost the size of Sardinia. Some experts think indigenous people started the blaze as an attempt at forest clearance, which quickly got out of hand. “Institutional failures” compounded the disaster when the ailing government responded with an inadequate number of poorly equipped firefighters. Another study from last week examined the impact of wildfires on soil health.
Flooding and “cold lava” killed 50+ in Indonesia, injuring dozens and displacing several thousand. Cold lava is a mixture of water and rocks tumbling down the side of a volcano. Meanwhile, an actual volcano erupted in Indonesia, sending smoke & ash 5000m high; further eruptions are possible soon.
The Swiss Re Institute published a 37-page report last week about natural disasters in 2023—and how much damage, in USD, they caused. The largest catastrophe was the February 7.8 earthquake in Türkiye & Syria, which killed 59,000+ people and caused $163B+ in damage. The report is full of interesting graphics & data about natural disasters.
“Last year, economic losses from natural catastrophes reached USD 280 billion, meaning that 62% of the global losses were uninsured….the insured losses surpassed USD 100 billion for the fourth consecutive year….annual insured losses will grow by 5–7% over the long term…today’s insured losses could double in 10 years….There were 142 insured-loss inducing catastrophes in 2023, a new record. Most were of medium severity, which we define as events resulting in losses of USD 1–5 billion….Over the last 30 years, we estimate that natural catastrophe insured losses have grown by 3 percentage points more annually than the global economy (in inflation adjusted terms)...”
Flooding and heat waves are impacting Brazil’s oranges, responsible for about 70% of the world’s supply. One food analysts declared that the “era of cheap food is over”—in the UK, at least. That may be one reason why UK residents took record food bank packages last year. Madagascar is struggling to adapt to a future with far less rainfall.
France is growing more concerned about a dam on Lake Geneva, controlled exclusively by Switzerland. The Rhône River, which begins in Switzerland and flows south through France, is shrinking in summers as climate change melts Switzerland’s remaining glaciers.
The Tonlé San River has been dammed in Vietnam, lowering the level in Cambodia and sometimes drying the river downstream entirely. Meanwhile, China’s lychee harvest is getting blasted by rain, impacting the world’s largest source of lychee. And, once again, Saudi Arabia is suffering flooding in its inland regions. 7 dead in historic flooding in Iran.
The eminent climate scientist James Hansen posted that, since “human-made aerosols and their cooling effect are in decline,” the cooling effect of La Niña will be counterbalanced by these rising temperatures. He also identifies a “large anomaly of increased absorbed solar radiation at midlatitudes in the Northern Hemisphere” responsible for rising temperatures there. CO2 levels are rising faster today than they have at any point in the previous 50,000 years…and a study of millennia-old trees determined last summer was the hottest worldwide in 2,000+ years…
Record nighttime May temperatures were tied in the Philippines and Vietnam. A couple Indonesian cities broke records for May temperatures. And a number of southern African states saw more records drop. And Toronto saw a record tied for the number of days reaching 14 °C (57 °F). A heat wave has returned to Bangladesh. Flooding in Cali (pop: 2.9M), Colombia.
The University of Washington was ordered to stop a geoengineering project that scientists sere conducting from the deck of a decommissioned aircraft carrier. The experiment ejected aerosolized saltwater in an attempt to reflect solar radiation. A comparative study in Nature Communications of a number of carbon pricing found that, yes, carbon pricing does work to reduce the total CO2 emitted.
It’s that time of the year again. Wildfires in Canada grow, some of which are moving towards the tar sands—forcing thousands to evacuate. 39 of the total nation’s blazes are “out of control,” resulting in air quality alerts in the United States. Meanwhile, across the Caribbean, water shortages have become the new normal, and residents (and tourists) are finding their old consumption habits hard to change. St. Lucia has declared a water emergency. In Myanmar, water shortages worsen, particularly as related to the spiraling conflict.
At least ⅛ of Europeans live in a place at risk of extreme flooding—so says a 175-page report from the European Environment Agency posted on Wednesday. The number of people living in flood-risk coastal areas in the EU & UK is expected to jump 24% by 2050. The graphics-packed report also considers how flooding will impact healthcare facilities, mental health, wastewater treatment plants, the spread of disease, cyanobacteria, permafrost thaw, and much else.
“Europe has seen devastating floods following record rainfall, droughts of magnitudes not experienced in hundreds of years, continuing sea level rise, and increasing lake and sea temperatures….permanent water stress already affects 30% of people in southern Europe….since 2018, more than half of Europe has been impacted by extreme drought conditions….Climate change is expected to increase mercury bioaccumulation in the marine food chain due to rising ocean temperatures, ocean acidification and permafrost thawing….Depression, anxiety and PTSD may persist for years after a flooding event….Under the changing climate, northern Europe is becoming wetter in general, but drier in summer. Southern Europe is becoming drier, especially in winter. For central-eastern and western Europe, the trend is less clear…” -selections from the report
Milan suffered flooding last week, the worst May flooding in 170 years. Early spring in the UK has disrupted migratory bird species and their usual patterns.
A 74-page working paper which is not yet peer-reviewed claims that earlier estimates for how much GDP would be impacted by another 1 °C temperature rise is way less than it would be in actuality. The paper claims the real cost (in USD) is about 6x greater. They claim “global temperature has much more pronounced impacts on economic activity than local temperature” and that extreme weather is mostly behind the projected decline in productivity.
——————————
Epidemiologists are worried about how climate change in Africa may extend the life of disease-bearers like ticks and mosquitoes. Other epidemiologists are worried about how cattle may become a permanent reservoir for H5N1. Growing traced of bird flu have been found in wastewater testing in the U.S., but investigators think it may be runoff from infected dairy farms.
Obesity, high blood sugar, and high blood pressure rates today globally are 50% higher than in 2000—though researchers claim that air pollution still poses a larger threat. Of a study participants in Hawai’i, 75% had respiratory issues, probably from the Maui wildfires last year.
The 2024 World Migration Report is out, and its 384 pages are not as apocalyptic as one might think. However, internally displaced people are at their all-time highest. India, Mexico, Russia, China, and Syria lead the world in emigrants; another document contains the definitions for who exactly constitutes a migrant. Unfortunately much of the data relied upon ends in 2022. Data from this year, not included in the above report, indicates a 40% jump in traffic through the Darien Gap compared to the same time period in 2023.
“The last two years saw major migration and displacement events that have caused great hardship and trauma, as well as loss of life….There have also been large-scale displacements triggered by climate- and weather-related disasters in many parts of the world in 2022 and 2023, including in Pakistan, the Philippines, China, India, Bangladesh, Brazil and Colombia….disinformation tactics are increasingly being used by nefarious actors with negative impacts on public, political and social media discourse on migration….Forced displacement is the highest on record in the modern era…overconsumption and overproduction linked to unsustainable economic growth, resource depletion and biodiversity collapse, as well as ongoing climate change (including global heating) are continuing to grip the world….the risk of further conflict has not been higher in decades, as military spending reached a new record high of USD 2,240 billion in 2022…” -excerpts from the introduction
Another report, focusing on internal displacement, came out last week; its 69 pages show a cross-section of about 47M people displaced by natural disasters (56%) or armed conflict (44%). Most of the disasters were storms & flooding, and most of the conflicts were civil wars of some form. This report also provides detailed region-by-region analyses—with sub-Saharan Africa accounting for 46% of global IDPs.
“Conflict and violence triggered 13.5 million movements, the highest figure for the past 15 years….Disasters and conflict are presented as different triggers, but their impacts can overlap, often leading to repeated and/ or protracted displacement….Drought triggered 331,000 displacements in Somalia….Floods triggered 550,000 displacements in Ethiopia….Conflict and violence triggered 3.8 million displacements in DRC in 2023, a slight fall from the record four million in 2022, but still the second-highest figure globally after Sudan….nearly two-thirds of the internal displacements recorded in 2023 originated from Khartoum state. More than 39 per cent of the state's inhabitants were forced to flee, leaving entire neighbourhoods empty….Criminal and communal violence triggered nearly three-quarters of Nigeria's 291,000 conflict displacements….” -selections from the spotlight on sub-Saharan Africa
Experts are concerned about the mental health impacts that climate change has on our minds. Hotter temperatures reportedly increase depression & aggression. Wildfires and storms can cause PTSD. Workers feel stress and desperation as their usual industries are impacted. And air pollution influences ordinary brain processes in many ways.
Some analysts believe “Peak China” may be over, signaling a period of economic tapering-off, as well as a growing militancy. Increasing U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods are continuing to separate the two economies. The Netherlands finally formed a provisional government, though its proposed immigration & farming policies have set it at odds with the EU.
The Federal Reserve, the U.S. central bank, released a 46-page report on potential climate risks to the banking system’s resilience. As far as I understood, most of the risk lies in extreme weather events and the risk to insurance agencies.
Part of southeast England experienced an outbreak of Cryptosporidium, a diarrhea & vomiting illness, highly contagious, which can last weeks. At least 22 cases have been reported. Meanwhile, the CDC is issuing warnings about the more dangerous strain of monkeypox circulating in the DRC, although cases are currently limited to Africa.
North Carolina’s Senate voted to ban mask-wearing last week, under the reasoning that it would make police identification of protestors difficult. An fMRI study found lasting neurological changes in COVID survivors; they “had significantly higher cognitive complaints of mental fatigue and cognitive failure….even two years after recovering.” Experts say a summer rise in COVID cases is coming to the United States.
A study on The Canadian/American Great Lakes found that PFAS levels are increasing in the 3 largest lakes (Superior, Huron, and Michigan), while decreasing in the other two (Erie, Ontario). The study also found that precipitation is the primary means by which the Lakes are accumulating PFAS, since the chemicals are small & stable enough to move through the water cycle. Meanwhile, in England’s Lake District, a telecom failure resulted in raw sewage being pumped into England’s largest and most famous lake, Windermere, on-and-off for 10 hours; and a major British water CEO took a $4M USD pay package last year. And a look into the Chicago River’s health found that microplastics & trash are endangering health & biodiversity.
——————————
An assassination attempt by a lone wolf on Slovakia’s PM left him in critical condition, but likely to survive. 11 civilians were slain by cartel fighters in a few battles in Mexico. Violence continues to spiral out of control in Goma, DRC.
In Haiti, everything worsens indefinitely. Guns have reportedly entered from Florida, a phenomenon which officials call an “iron river.” Police have been put on the defensive against the growing might of the gang warlords.
A brawl broke out in Taiwan’s parliament. An Iranian plot was allegedly foiled to smuggle weapons into Jordan to destabilize the pro-U.S. regime.
Dozens more died in Sudan from escalating violence around Darfur. People are warning about “a disaster on top of a disaster” and the possibility of Sudan splitting apart. Others have called it “hell on earth” as 1,000+ refugees cross the Chad border every day. Disease and malnutrition are growing, while famine encroaches upon 9M helpless victims of the conflict—but the world’s attention is elsewhere.
The U.S. Army Engineers completed constructing the pier in Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid. Some 600,000 Gazans have been displaced from Rafah already, and fighting has escalated against Hamas militants in northern Gaza.
Taliban forces skirmished with Pakistani soldiers for about 90 minutes last week. Taliban attacks in Pakistan, and counterattacks have resulted in a kind of ambient disruption for the rocky border zone.
Violent protests—and counteroperationsare continuing in New Caledonia (pop: 270,000), a Pacific island part of overseas France. The riots, which have killed 6 people so far, began after metropolitan France proposed a plan to expand voting rights beyond indigenous residents. A state of emergency has been declared amid worries about a spiral of violence taking hold.
As the Sahel dries out, experts are concerned about the links to rising terrorism in the region. The Sahel accounts for over 40% of global terrorism deaths—according to the analysts’ understanding of “terrorism.” Mali in particular has reportedly become home to 41 new, different non-state armed groups (NSAGs) since 2007. A contested election in Chad resulted in the consolidation of the interim leader’s power.
“If governments are continually unable to solve regional issues, the people will be at the whim of any terror group that has a basic organization. It serves these groups’ interests to promote insecurity where they can and create security where they want. A “hearts and minds” campaign in the Sahel could lead to long-term and locally supported insurgencies in a land that is currently rife with civil strife.” -from the article
Some wargamers concluded that a Trump victory in 2020 would spell the end of NATO, or at least the end of its utility. Vladimir Putin replaced his minister of defense with a top economic advisor, just before going to Beijing to reaffirm their friendship with “no limits.” Some say Putin is planning on a forever war. Some say NATO is gearing up for one, too.
Russia made several gains in the suburbs of Kharkiv, seizing several settlements which some analysts doubt they will hold. Putin claims they aren’t really trying to take Kharkiv anyway… Russia also made small progress in the Donbas—although they suffered their largest one-day casualties since the start of the war. The U.S. allocated another $2B to hasten the delivery of weapons to the front lines. The next weeks will be crucial on the front. Switzerland has invited 160+ nations to send delegates to a peace summit intended to design a path to making peace in this War.
——————————
Select comments/threads from the subreddit last week suggest:
-Brazil’s flooding was really, really bad, judging from this post and its accompanying images. Across just one of Brazil’s 26 states, 600,000+ people have been made homeless, 100+ have died, and the storm season isn’t over yet. Some of the flooding isn’t expected to subside for another month.
-How specifically might climate change make humanity extinct? This thread crowdsources a number of plausible ways, from ordinary famines to nuclear war and even a massive deoxygenation process. I tend to think it will be a consequence of an eventual nuclear exchange, followed by extended famine and disease.

2024.05.19 08:48 EJC28 Raiders 2024 Draft Analysis Compilation

Round 1, Pick 13 - Brock Bowers, TE, Georgia:
NFL: This is the Raiders willing to adjust the offense to take the best player available. Bowers is a spectacular player who can line up anywhere along the formation as a tight end. There aren’t many holes in his game -- which should urge new OC Luke Getsy to get creative and get Bowers and Michael Mayer on the field together.
CBS Sports: C. He’s a heck of a player, but didn’t they draft Michael Mayer last year and signed Harrison Bryant this year? They have other needs. Don’t really like this pick that much. It’s not like he’s a good blocker for their run game. Strange pick with other needs.
ESPN: What a strange first-round selection, especially considering tight end was addressed last season with the second-round selection of Michael Mayer. Offensive tackle and cornerback were bigger needs. New general manager Tom Telesco must have simply relied on his draft board and gone best player available, especially with Oregon State RT Taliese Fuaga and every single CB still available. In fact, every defensive player was still on the board, and yet ... Bowers was considered a top-10 overall talent and should provide immediate production for an anemic offense.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Cries during Bluey but only at the opening credits.
Round 2, Pick 44 - Jackson Powers-Johnson, OG, Oregon:
NFL: Brock Bowers felt like a throwback Raiders pick to me, but JPJ really feels like an Al Davis classic. Powers-Johnson is a big, brawling interior lineman who played center last year but also can line up at guard -- the position he was announced at -- and bury the man opposite him, even if he's a little stiff and an average athlete.
CBS Sports: A. Instant starter inside. Guard size with mobile center feet. Shorter arms and some rawness in pass pro. But upside is through the roof. All-Pro caliber in that regard. Smart pick here.
ESPN: While Powers-Johnson played center at Oregon, the Raiders announced him as a guard, which makes sense since Las Vegas needs a right guard. Yes, even after the Raiders signed veteran Cody Whitehair in free agency. Powers-Johnson has started games at both guard spots and center in his college career. Last season, he started 13 games at center, was an All-America selection and won the Rimington Award as the nation's top center. He provides quality versatility, which is highly valued on the Raiders' offensive line.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: He somehow still uses a functioning Windows phone.
Round 3, Pick 77 - DJ Glaze, OT, Maryland:
NFL: A left or right tackle with great length and so-so athleticism, Glaze was considered a question mark because of some past injuries (including an ACL), but the Raiders clearly feel good about him here. He's likely a swing tackle to start out but could compete for a starting job down the line.
CBS Sports: A-. One of the more calculated OTs in the class. Rarely panics and has plus awareness. Requisite size and length to stay on the edge in the NFL. Athleticism is at times great but not a true speciality. Nothing overly standout about his game. Just high floor blocker.
ESPN: After taking a versatile interior offensive lineman in the second round in Powers-Johnson, the Raiders used their third-round pick to grab a college tackle who could also transition inside to guard in Glaze. The selection shows how much the new regime of GM Tom Telesco and coach Antonio Pierce value versatility on the offensive line, which is all but set on the left side and at center. Glaze has a long wingspan at nearly seven feet but is not known for being overly physical.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Prefers the arrows on the keyboard over WASD.
Round 4, Pick 112 - Decamerion Richardson, CB, Mississippi State:
NFL: I joked on Day 2 that the Raiders are having another Al Davis-flecked draft, and Richardson keeps the theme rolling. He's a straight-line speed demon with great length, two very encouraging traits. But his penchant for handsy coverage and no real track record for playmaking mutes his appeal just a bit.
CBS Sports: A-. Long, sleek burner who will make plays on the football when he trusts his eyes. Lacks physicality at times and that hurts him when attempting to stop the run although when he gets to the football, he’s a very sure tackler. Smooth athlete in off-man and zone. This secondary needed this type of CB specimen.
ESPN: The Raiders finally address their defense at defensive back in particular, with Richardson who is 6-foot-2 and ran the 40 in 4.34 seconds. He needs development but did lead Mississippi State with 7 pass breakups last season, even as he never had an interception. He's also not afraid to stick his nose in the scrum as he had a combined 164 tackles the last two seasons.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Thinks scotch tape smells like Christmas.
Round 5, Pick 148 - Tommy Eichenberg, LB, Ohio State:
NFL: Instinctive, throwback linebacker who lacks great speed. Eichenberg has the makeup to turn into a defensive tone-setter, even if his coverage ability is limited.
CBS Sports: A-. Ultra-active middle linebacker with a blitzing specialty. Smooth athlete a bit quicker than fast. Awareness is good in coverage, he will find crossers and understand in-breakers are working behind him. Strong tackler. Lack of speed and at times problems vs. blocks are weaknesses but this is a sound football player.
ESPN: Coach Pierce, who spent nine years as an NFL linebacker, gets his guy in the 6-foot-2, 233-pound Eichenberg, who provides depth while translating into a backup for Robert Spillane. Eichenberg did miss three games with an arm injury last season, a year after he was second-team All-American. More a thumper inside than a pass-coverage specialist, Eichenberg had 82 tackles (2.5 for a loss), a sack and a forced fumble in 10 games last season.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Played the role of background tree in his middle school play.
Round 6, Pick 208 - Dylan Laube, RB, New Hampshire:
NFL: Laube become something of a folk hero at the Senior Bowl, charming fans with his personality, elusiveness and pass-catching prowess. He had 295 yards receiving against Central Michigan alone this year and legitimately could emerge as a third-down weapon in the pass game.
CBS Sports: A-. Insane receiving RB. Built low to the ground and had fine testing figures before the draft. Low, side to side wiggle but lacks speed once he finds space. Contact balance is good too. Think the small-school Blake Corum.
ESPN: An FCS All-American all-purpose player, Laube projects more as a potential kick and punt returner in the NFL rather than a rotational running back. He averaged 31.1 yards on kick returns and 11.3 yards on punt returns and had a touchdown on each. He rushed for 749 yards and nine TDs, averaging 4.7 yards per carry last season, and also had 68 catches for 699 yards with seven receiving scores, including a 295-receiving yards game against Central Michigan.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Once wrote 250+ fake true facts for nfl draft cards like a moron.
Round 7, Pick 223 - Trey Taylor, S, Air Force:
NFL: Air Force has landed a few players in the draft the past few years after a long absence, and Taylor could make it either as a box safety or a special teams contributor.
CBS Sports: A. Thick, productive three-level safety best being closer to the line. Plays with controlled athleticism. Gets grabby against better athletes but that’s expected for a larger safety. Solid ball skills. Not ultra twitchy. Smart well-rounded type.
ESPN: The first-ever defensive back drafted out of the Air Force Academy, Taylor won the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation's top defensive back. He figures to provide immediate depth behind starters Marcus Epps and Tre’von Moehrig, but at 6-feet, 213 pounds, he has the size and instincts to be an immediate contributor. Taylor, whose cousin is Hall of Fame safety Ed Reed, had three interceptions, one pick-six, 74 tackles, five for a loss, four PBUs and a blocked kick last fall.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Yes, you reading this COULD have come up with better Facts.
Round 7, Pick 229 - MJ Devonshire, CB, Pittsburgh:
NFL: Devonshire is a fast, tough competitor with size limitations. He was never a full-time starter in college but had strong ball production the past two years.
CBS Sports: B+. Long CB who has the frame of a nickel. Fast, decently explosive athlete. Best in press man near the line. Average to slightly above-average ball skills. Zone awareness not there yet. High floor type.
ESPN: The Raiders concluded their draft by taking their second cornerback of the day in Devonshire, who is more a physical defender who does not shy away from bump-and-run coverage than a speedy DB, though he did run a 4.45 40. The 5-foot-11, 186-pound Devonshire led Pitt with four interceptions last season, including a pick-six, and had 10 PBUs in 12 games with nine starts. Las Vegas split their eight draft picks evenly between offense (TE, G, OT, RB) and defense (two CBs, S, LB).
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Likes bologna on white bread with mustard - it’s a flat hotdog!

2024.05.19 08:34 One_Knee_5232 Should I go for bachelors in SANS?

I am very interested in SANS Technology institute but they require you to have done some college to fulfill 70 credits. I am a high school student so this is not something which I have. They have a patnership with Montgemory College which might allow me to transfer to SANS. However, they haven't specified what requirements I should meet to transfer to SANS.
I am a high school student with decent GPA and good SAT score and am probably capable of entering some decent universities.
I want to know if there is some guarantee that I will be accepted to SANS technology institute if I were to go do my Associates in Montgomery College.
I am not willing to risk abandoning going to a 4-year well-known university for just a chance to get to SANS tech institute. I want to know if there is some guarantee which I can do which will allow me to just go do Montgemory College and then transfer to SANS tech institute. Like some sort of reserved seat...

2024.05.19 08:17 One_Knee_5232 Should I go for bachelors?

2024.05.19 08:00 EJC28 Chargers 2024 Draft Analysis Compilation

Round 1, Pick 5 - Joe Alt, OT, Notre Dame:
NFL: Head coach Jim Harbaugh is set on building an offensive bully and that starts with the offensive line. Alt comes in as a polished tackle who’ll step in and immediately boost the unit and protect Justin Herbert.
CBS Sports: B. He is the best in this class, but now he has to make the transition to right tackle for Jim Harbaugh. That can be tough to do. But taking a lineman makes sense, I just might have taken J.C. Latham as a better fit.
ESPN: Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz said they would stick to the process of picking the best player available, a strategy he learned from 26 years in the Baltimore Ravens personnel department that won him two Super Bowls. Selecting Alt on Thursday night supports this theory. The Chargers currently employ only four receivers -- none of whom has a season over 800 yards in the NFL -- and passed on taking the second-best receiver in the class. The Chargers are returning four of their five offensive line starters from last season and signed center Bradley Bozeman in free agency, but stuck to their strategy despite much bigger needs on the roster.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: His Skyrim character is Thad: The High King of Skyrim.
Round 2, Pick 34 - Ladd McConkey, WR, Georgia:
NFL: Our second pick, second receiver and first trade of the night. The Patriots slide back a few spots, and the Chargers get a receiver who should be thrust right into the mix. Although McConkey had injury issues at Georgia, if he's able to stay healthy, he could be Justin Herbert's favorite target in due time. With great route-running skills and impressive separation ability, McConkey could be an 80-catch player one day.
CBS Sports: A. Crafty, athletic, polished WR who can win on the boundary and in the slot. Releases are great. Route-running nuance also there. Deceptive speed and YAC skills.
ESPN: After trading Keenan Allen and releasing Mike Williams, the Chargers came into the draft with just four receivers on the roster. None among that receiving group of Joshua Palmer, Quentin Johnston, Derius Davis and Simi Fehoko had ever topped 800 yards in an NFL season. Since Herbert entered the league in 2020, he has always had a coterie of reliable pass-catchers, including players like running back Austin Ekeler and tight end Gerald Everett, who both left in free agency. McConkey, the Chargers hope, gives Herbert another player he can count on in the passing offense after many key departures.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Cannot stand The Office save for Scott’s Tots.
Round 3, Pick 69 - Junior Colson, LB, Michigan:
NFL: If there was one player I would have bet would follow Jim Harbaugh to the Chargers, it would have been Mike Sainristil or Colson. The latter was the emotional heartbeat of a championship Michigan defense, as Colson is a full-tilt competitor who brings his all to every game and every practice. He's a tackling machine whose coverage limitations were likely what caused him to fall out of the top 50 picks.
CBS Sports: B. Ties to Jim Harbaugh and addresses a need at off-ball LB. Best tackling linebacker in the class by a wide margin. Flashed some coverage chops in 2023 but not a speciality. I didn’t see premier range or speed to the football. Beats blocks with decent regularly and ball skills must show up more in NFL. Very young.
ESPN: This was a position of need for the Chargers and Colson, who was a second-team Big Ten selection and led the team with 95 tackles last season, will bring necessary competition to a mostly unproven group. Both of the Chargers' starting outside linebackers in 2023 won't be back next season, as Kenneth Murray Jr. signed with the Tennessee Titans in free agency and Eric Kendricks was released in March. Linebackers Daiyan Henley (51 defensive snaps in 2023) and Nick Niemann (238 defensive snaps in 2023) are the Chargers' lone returning linebackers from last season, but they also signed Denzel Perryman and Troy Dye.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: We all know what pick this is so make with the ‘nice’ jokes.
Round 4, Pick 105 - Justin Eboigbe, DT, Alabama:
NFL: Jim Harbaugh keeps beefing up both fronts. Eboigbe played well in Bama's Rose Bowl loss to Harbaugh's Wolverines, so this pick isn't a shock. The Chargers are adding toughness in Eboigbe, assuming his health improves. He had a breakout season in 2023.
CBS Sports: C+. Classic Nick Saban defensive lineman. Two-gapping extraordinaire with thick, powerful frame. Good first-step quickness but won’t be a calling card to win as a pass rusher consistently in the NFL. Not a pass-rush move type. Higher floor than upside. Limited role.
ESPN: The Chargers begin Day 3 by filling another of the team's most significant needs. L.A. is set at outside linebacker on their defensive line with Khalil Mack, Joey Bosa and Tuli Tuipulotu, but they are largely unproven in the interior. Some of the Chargers' best interior defenders from last season, defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day and defensive tackle Austin Johnson, won't be back in 2024. Eboigbe, 6-foot-4, 275 pounds, was a first-team All-SEC selection last season, finishing with a caterer-high seven sacks.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Has been known to run around banging coconuts together simulating a horse.
Round 5, Pick 137 - Tarheeb Still, CB, Maryland:
NFL: The first tape I watched of Still, coincidentally, was against Michigan -- and he looked good. Jim Harbaugh clearly agreed, although Still's lack of elite speed or size might make him more of a candidate to kick inside as a nickel.
CBS Sports: C+. Chippy, fluid CB who wants to come up and hit people. Super-smooth hips. Doesn’t have the length or pure speed to be lockdown type but gets the most out of his athletic skill set. Won’t follow routes perfectly at the next level. Can be too grabby in man. Infectious energy on the field. Just lacks premier traits.
ESPN: The Chargers' pass defense was abysmal last season, allowing 249.6 yards per game, which ranked 30th in the NFL. So they had to address their secondary in the draft. Still, who is 6-foot and 189 pounds, ran a 4.52 in the 40-yard dash at the combine and finished with five interceptions last season, which tied for sixth in the FBS. He has lined up primarily outside (77% of his snaps came from out wide), but he can also play in the slot.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: His favorite operating system is Windows XP.
Round 5, Pick 140 - Cam Hart, CB, Notre Dame:
NFL: The Chargers double up on long DBs to help combat the AFC West's playmakers. Hart has a strong athletic profile, and he has the perfect makeup to be a special teams coverage standout as well.
CBS Sports: B-. Old-school, long outside CB. Huge with extreme length. Moves well for his size but probably won’t be able to stay with quick separators in the NFL on a regular basis. Last-resort grabbing gets him into trouble during the route. Speed is average and didn’t make many plays on the ball but not tested often. Maybe move to safety?
ESPN: Cornerback is the first position where the Chargers have drafted multiple players so far, proving that the group was one Hortiz knew needed improvement and competition. Cornerback may also be Hortiz's favorite position. He told reporters that he "never feels full at corner. That is a position that you never stop chasing," he said. The Chargers now have six cornerbacks on the active roster, including the 6-3, 202-pound Hart.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Takes three to five business days to reply to an email.
Round 6, Pick 181 - Kimani Vidal, RB, Troy:
NFL: I'm a bit surprised the Chargers didn't take a back before this, but Vidal has a chance to join the RB rotation for Jim Harbaugh. Vidal's profile reads similarly to Blake Corum, so it's easy to see why Harbaugh might view him favorably.
CBS Sports: A. This is a future feature back. Stocky, well-built frame. Between the tackles experience and can blend slashing and multi-cut style together. Elusive, sets up blockers well and has effortless power through contact at times. Not a true burner.
ESPN: Since the Jim Harbaugh era began in February, the theme for the Chargers has been on running the football. Vidal gives them depth at a position that will be one of the most important on the team. Considering the talent in the Chargers' running back room, which includes J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards, Vidal likely projects to be mainly a special teams contributor in his first year. Vidal set the Troy career (4,010), single-season (1,661), and single-game (248) rushing records, and his great-uncle is Baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Spreads his love of Frito Pie eaten out of the little bag, like God intended.
Round 7, Pick 225 - Brenden Rice, WR, USC:
NFL: Jerry Rice's son and Caleb Williams' go-to guy figured to go a few rounds higher than this, but it's possible scouts felt there was more development needed in his game. With the Chargers, there are WR jobs open for Rice to make the roster early on.
CBS Sports: B+. Downfield specimen with quality size. Didn’t test amazingly but was a vertical weapon for Caleb Williams at USC. Stiff routes and only glimmers of YAC but has the power to run through some tackles. Fun fit with Justin Herbert. Son of NFL legend Jerry Rice.
ESPN: Only four receivers were on the Chargers roster before the draft, so drafting a second receiver seemed inevitable. Rice, 6-3, 208 pounds, is the son of Pro Football Hall of Fame receiver Jerry Rice. He played his final two seasons for the Trojans, where he was the primary deep target for No. 1 pick Caleb Williams. Rice led the team with a 14.6 air yards per target average in 2023, and 7 of his 12 TD receptions were on vertical routes -- tied for the sixth-most in the FBS.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: After adjusting the other picks & removing outliers he regresses to 1st overall.
Round 7, Pick 253 - Cornelius Johnson, WR, Michigan:
NFL: Another Michigan player for Jim Harbaugh. Johnson rarely was featured in Michigan's run-heavy system, but he made his mark as a blocker and occasional big-play receiver. His hands are inconsistent, but Johnson could find footing in L.A.
CBS Sports: C+. Sizable receiver who can deceive CBs with his long-striding speed when given a runaway. Inflexible movements will keep him from getting open on regular basis or winning against press. Ball skills are good in traffic.
ESPN: The more, the merrier in the Chargers receiving room. Johnson is their third pick at receiver, and for good reason. Johnson is also a familiar face, playing under Jim Harbaugh at the University of Michigan and the many other Michigan coaches on the Chargers staff. Johnson, 6-foot-3, 212 pounds, was a four-year starter at receiver and had 119 receptions since the start of 2021, the sixth most in the Big Ten. Johnson mainly played out wide in his career, with 84% of his snaps over the last three seasons coming lined up on the outside.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Upset with the rising price of cheese and cheese related goods.

2024.05.19 06:40 Ok-Economy-1267 Can I Sue my Ex of 5 Years for Moving Costs, Emotional Damage, Anything?

My ex and I have been living together and dating for roughly 5 years of time. We met at a university we both attended where we were getting the same degree, and I thought we were deeply in love. We never argued, had the same views and goals for the future, and the 2-3 problems we did develop were communicated and improved in healthy ways. It was a loving relationship that our friends could only hope to have. He had even custom made me a promise ring that I wore every day and never took off. I was a part of his family gatherings in Maine (where he was from), and he was involved with my family back in Michigan as well. We lived together for years, and I had hoped that we would get married after we graduated, like we had talked about. We were living like we were, anyway, so I was under the impression it would be a welcome next step.
A year after we both graduated, he ended up getting a job across the country (Michigan New Mexico). He would have a pretty large salary increase, would be doing things he enjoyed in the workplace, and be closer to his hobbies and a few friends that he had at our university that were older. I would have to move to a state I've never been, away from all of my friends and family, with no personal plan in place (I did not have a job lined up there like he did). However, he told me I could focus on healing from past trauma I couldn't process while I was focused on school, and work on getting my streaming and music career off of the ground, which is something I would've rather done with my life. I had plenty of contacts to realistically attempt something like that. And if it wasn't working, I could always try to get a job where he did. He would cover the rent of the condo we lived at, but I'd still pay all of my own personal bills (food, insurance, phone, etc.). Weighing the pros and cons, and how I believed our relationship to be/where it was headed, I agreed. We went 50/50 on furniture we would need while we were still in Michigan, because the company paid to move our stuff. The moving company damaged some things of mine that were irreplaceable, and I wanted him to deal with the moving company about it, but he never did. When we got there, I unpacked pretty much everything that was moved for the both of us, set up and organized the house, and did all of the cooking, paperwork, and chores I could so my ex could focus on getting settled in his new job. I put together lists of what we still needed, and continued to buy things for the condo 50/50, even when I was running off of low hustle income and savings. I even sold things that meant a lot to me so I'd be able to deal with all of the moving logistics and support myself when my work was "unpacking and settling".
Right before I finished my stream setup, and I was ready to start grinding on my own career, I had stumbled upon evidence of him cheating when I needed to use his computer. I have documented evidence that he has been paying sex workers for various things for the past 2 years, well before this job and move was in the picture. I didn't have access to his socials or accounts to know the full extent of what he had done, but what I had found was more than enough. When I confronted him, he didn't deny it either. I was distraught and depressed. I cut again for the first time in years. I felt lied to, betrayed, suicidal, and alone. I felt unsafe being alone in the condo, so I went to his friend's house after finding out. I told them what was wrong and they were in total disbelief until I showed them the evidence, it was extremely out of character for him. I lost 10 pounds in 2 days. The day of finding out what he did, I had already bought plane tickets back to Michigan for studio work, and couldn't change it. We agreed to take some space to figure out next steps, so I took that flight back to Michigan with two suitcases of my things, not knowing what was happening. I spent another few months unable to work, because my mental state was horrendous, and I didn't want to cash in any favors to get an engineering position when I didn't know where I was even going to be in a month's time. It seemed like we were going to try couple's therapy, because I really wanted to understand why he needed the external validation. I wanted to help him and figure out exactly what went wrong, because I didn't see any signs of this behavior. But we cut it off for good in December, when he had told me he's been seeing his ex. The breakup was slow and painful, and I was constantly living in a state of not knowing what was going on, and suffering mentally and financially for it. All of my plants that were there are now dead because he couldn't care for them, he still has my two cats, and I may have to sell my dream car in order to really afford starting over again. I can't even sell it as is since he didn't turn it on the entire time, so the battery and alternator are now dead too. It feels like my life was ripped out from under me in a blink of an eye, and I was the one being punished for it when I was the one who didn't do anything wrong.
My mom flew me out to Guam in December, knowing how much I was hurting and she wanted to get me away from it all. I was supposed to leave 2 months later in February, but here I am, still here 5 months later. Still essentially living off of two suitcases of my belongings. I am ready to move on with my life. I want my cats and my things back, and I want a fresh start. I have a few jobs lined up for me here to get back on my feet. I had to purchase a new wardrobe for the office, and a new car to get around.
All I asked for him to do was send my stuff back to Michigan, where it came from, so it could be stored at my dad's house until I could get it moved here to Guam. I felt like it was fair to ask, considering he lied to me and cheated on me for two years, when he easily could've just broken up with me before moving for his job. He made the conscious decision to drag me along and shift my whole life for him, when he had no plans to actually be with me. He bragged about the salary increase and I know what it is, I know he can afford to pay for my stuff to be moved out. I have been asking for updates constantly over the past few months, and he gives me spaced and vague answers. He is now saying he wants me to pay for half of it to be moved, which I think is unfair. This situation is entirely his fault, I'm already spending a lot of money starting my life over, and I was the only one unpacking things when we got there. He can pack up my things, and send it back to where it came from. He's also keeping everything we went 50/50 on as well, so I'm still losing even when he pays for the move. Our friends are on my side here, but he isn't cooperating or budging. I wanted to be civil, but he's being difficult to communicate with, and I am on the other side of the world now. Can I/Should I take him to court to pay for my move? Can I/Should I pursue suing him for the other aspects now that he is no longer being civil about this? Will being on Guam while he is in New Mexico complicate a lawsuit? I'm losing my mind at how I have had everything to lose, and he still doesn't have the decency to do what people around me seem to think is the right thing to do. Any advice and further questions to clarify the situation is appreciated.

2024.05.19 05:52 reetj27 How important are Volunteer hrs??

I am currently volunteering at a blood drive center as a donor engagement specialist. I am also volunteering at my local Sikh Temple. In the past, I have volunteered at a community kitchen. In total, I think I have about 60 volunteer hrs and 170 shadowing hrs. Should I have more volunteer hrs or is this enough? I'm applying to school like UW, UCSF, Michigan, Tufts etc.

2024.05.19 03:23 nerdeastern Rice??? UW?? Or honestly anywhere, I'm afraid I won't get in

Helloooo, I'm a junior and I'm trying to narrow my college list, and find more realistic target schools. Science and math have always been my weakest points, but I've always challenged myself nonetheless. If you have any college recommendations for me, I'd really appreciate it!!! Sorry this is so long!!
Demographics: M, White/Persian (dual citizen), TN, private school
Hooks: Performing arts
Intended Major(s): Biomedical Engineering, minor in Theater or Astronomy
ACT/SAT/SAT II: ACT - 26 (breakdown-- math 21, science 23, stem 22, eng 27, reading 33) SAT - 1220 (reading/writing-- 660, math-- 460)
UW/W GPA: Freshman GPA: 3.8 Sophomore GPA: 3.3 (medical leave) Junior GPA: 4.1 cumulative on record: 3.55 all weighted, cumulative hasn't been properly calculated (mistake in school's system)
Coursework: Freshman/Sophomore year I completed fine arts training (my academic lineage goes to Michelangelo) DP Eng Lit HL (A), DP AA SL (B), DP Physics HL (C), DP Anthro SL (B) Photography and Theater Production as electives, next year is 3rd year of fine arts training
Awards: National Art Honor Society Tri-M Music Honor Society International Thespian Society Scholastic Art and Writing Awards two honorable mentions National Shakespeare Competition Semi-Finalist 2 school awards in acting First in Odyssey of the Mind Ark State (2 years in a row) First in NHD Regional Comp International Honor Thespian by the end of my senior year
ECs: Assistant Director of a musical (2 shows) Directing (1 show) Tech Crew (lighting, sound, and stage) (4 shows) Acting (in hs) (6 shows, 8 by end of senior year) President of Thespian Troupe Part Time Job Art Studio Apprentice Published 3 times in School Anthology Graphic Designer in Student-Run Magazine Freelance Photography Odyssey of the Mind (3 years, will be coaching next year) President of GSA Club Co-founder of Acting Club Member of Local Astronomical Society CIT at Summer Camp School volunteer (19 hours) a lot more I haven't kept track of
Essays/LORs/Other: I believe my essay will be strong. I plan to write about how art has been my way of expressing myself and understanding the world around me, how I strive to be better at science, and my belief that science and art are the same in the sense that they are both ways of navigating the world, etc.
English teacher-- oh so very strong!!! i love my eng teacher she's so sweet :>
Anthro teacher-- haven't seen it yet, but i'm sure it'll be good, i have a natural spark in anthropology and am very active in his class, my teacher is also my advisor so i talk w him a lot more, he also is writing a recommendation for me for a summer program i'm applying to
Art teacher-- i believe this will be quite strong!
Director A-- this one will be !!great!!, she's known me for 7-8 years
Director B-- this one is a bit of a wildcard, he's a silly guy tho and he likes me so ik he'll say good things about me
Schools:
ED - Rice University
EA - UMich Stony Brook University
RD - Carnegie Mellon* NYU* UCSD CPSU (San Luis Obispo) San Diego State University UW UCD DePaul CU Boulder Michigan State
*I'm very passionate for theater and acting, which is why I want to apply to CMU and NYU for acting. I can't afford to fail if I took that route, which is why I'm only applying to reach schools under that major.
I am aware my college list is too long, I am hoping that'll change. I have safeties, I just didn't include them!! In general, I'm very worried about costs. Even though I'm on a single parent income of 100k (net), I am one of four people being financially supported by that income so that support will be limited in college. My parent's gross income is higher than almost every college's need-based cutoff, so I don't qualify for a lot of financial aid. My academics are also just not cutting it for most merit-based scholarships, as well. As I'm currently standing, I'm not eligible for the majority of large scholarships I've come across. Any help for a more realistic academic+financial bar? Thank you so much!!!

2024.05.19 02:58 newbdbdbsnsko How can I stimulate a border collie as much as possible in a city environment?

I live in an apartment in Michigan, and am truly in love with the breed. I understand that border collies are working dogs and are happiest on farms and when they have a job, but I think it’s rather unfair to need a farm to have such an intelligent and beautiful partner. It’s a small complex with a big field to run around in, as well as multiple soccebaseball fields surrounding it as there are multiple schools in the area. I live in a nice walkable neighborhood, and want nothing more than have a walking/hiking companion. I’m willing to invest the time, but am worried about mental stimulation. I had a australian cattle dog in the past that was found on the street, but that was when I was younger. She tore up the apartment, and we ended up giving her to a farmer. Any ideas on what I could do with a border collie in such a setting to properly have them feeling worn out at the end of the day?
If I determine it would be too much, then im certainly willing to wait for when my situation changes. I do not wish to subject another dog to what my last dog had to go through, due to my uneducation on the breed at the time.

2024.05.19 01:05 Suraziv [23M] - Looking for Long-Term Friends!

Hello! My name is Charlie and I’m from the great state of Michigan! I’m looking for some new long-term friends, doesn’t matter if you’re near me or not. I’ll keep it short, so here’s a bit about me:
I work in the auto industry and travel a bit for my job, mostly around Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan. I have been out of school for two years and was a business major.
I am a casual, mostly single player gamer but I am open to playing games together! I love racing games, rpgs, strategy games, and Paradox history games. I play on PS5 and PC!
I also love watching tv and movies, or YouTube. I’m a big music fan, love taking walks or hikes and just enjoying nature, taking drives, trying new food, going to museums, history, politics, NFL and college football, and Formula 1!
I’m a bit introverted but once I’m comfortable with people I can be a real chatterbox. I think I have a good sense of humor and am decently smart, as well as kind and very honest.
I’d love to get to know you, especially if we have things in common! Please don’t be shy and hmu with a short introduction about you!
Hope you have a nice day :)

2024.05.18 23:28 duckowucko [Long-Schall] 1968 Republican National Convention

[Long-Schall] 1968 Republican National Convention
Since the Dissolution of the Liberal Party in 1965, the Republican Party has become the new home to much of its members, like Governors Nelson Rockefeller and George Romney; or Senator John Kennedy. The Republican Party, for all intents and purposes, has become a big tent coalition of fiscal conservatives, social conservatives, “mixed baggers”, and political moderates that don't fit the more progressive beliefs of the Labor Party. If the 1960 election for the Republicans was about moderating the former dixiecrats, the 1964 election is all about whether they can steer the party in a direction that would please most of the new voter blocs.

Former Vice President Richard Nixon

Vice President from 1961 to 1965 (Mixed Bagger)
The several-time candidate for both the Presidency and Vice Presidency, Richard Nixon is back again. Despite his history of electoral losses, he's been the only Republican on a winning Presidential ticket since 1945; as well as the last Republican Vice President since 1953. He is known to have served as a competent advisor to Margaret Smith during her Presidency (1961-1965); despite his mental state coming into question since the passage of the Executive Faculties Act of 1964. Nixon, despite being the beginning frontrunner for the nomination, rumors of mental instability hold him back as candidates like Rockefeller and Reagan enter the top contenders in January. Nixon has increasingly been flip-flopping on certain issues, particularly environmental issues, and overall failing to talk about his campaign strategy to the media.
Nonetheless, Nixon takes after former President Margaret Smith, who has since rejoined the Senate in 1967, by appealing to all mainstream blocs of the big tent Republican Party. While being unclear on the issue, he seems to lean more liberal with economic issues, though he has placed emphasis on the dangers of collapsing SMEs. Nixon has supported President Jackson's recognition and move toward détente with China, arguing that “Any enemy of the Soviet Union is an ally we need.”

Governor Nelson Rockefeller

Governor of New York since 1959 (Mixed Bagger)
A former member of the Liberal Party before its dissolution in 1965, Governor Nelson Rockefeller has been a main-stay of New York for 9 years, with no signs of stopping anytime soon. He has worked hard on the expansion of civil protections on top of supporting federal laws on the issue; including advocating for the NY State law that outlawed discrimination in the sale of all forms of insurance. Over the course of his governorship thus far, Rockefeller was expanded and built a large number of State Parks, and is expected to continue methods of conservation as President. On the conservative side, Rockefeller has always been a “law and order” man, advocating for stop-and-frisk, no-knock, and capital punishment laws; himself overseeing 14 executions as Governor until he signed a bill to outlaw most instances of the Death Penalty in 1965.
Rockefeller has increasingly fought for easier access to higher education and the building of Public Universities while Governor; on top of doubling primary and secondary schools statewide.

Governor Ronald Reagan

Governor of California since 1963 (Conservative Populist)
Former Hollywood actor and sitting Governor of California, Ronald Reagan has united much of the Conservatives and even a handful of moderates under his campaign so far. Appalled by the rise in taxes for middle class Americans under the Jackson administration, Reagan aims to appeal to the median voter by promising universal tax cuts, cutting “the fat” from government agencies, and “putting control of the market back into the hands of the people.” “Government spending is what nearly got us bankrupt seven years ago, and jacking up taxes isn't going to cut it,” Reagan said, “It's far too early to fund all of these massive programs, we need a stable debt situation before we should even consider spending our tax dollars into feeding those that refuse to work for it, like the rest of us.”
Reagan campaigns on a strong NATO, arguing for the need to readmit France as soon as possible, “lest they stumble into the next Warsaw Pact luncheon.” In an interview with ABC News while campaigning in April for the nomination, he stated, “The Soviet Union is neither for the people, nor by the people. It's an evil empire, that's what it is. And what are we doing about it? Scoop [Jackson] campaigned on making our country stronger and dominant. Look where we are, driving France away from us and making deals with the People’s Republic [of China].” He would continue, saying, “No other candidate is taking the Soviet threat seriously, we must treat it and its allies like we did Nazi Germany; surround and threaten until it gives-way.”

Governor George Wilcken Romney

Governor of Michigan since 1963 (Moderate)
Despite Romney's lack of concrete foreign policy, his accomplishments as Governor of Michigan and domestic policy dominate the moderate bloc of the party. Endorsed by former presidents Dwight Eisenhower and Margaret Smith during his governorship, Romney had handedly won reelection as Governor three times. A strong supporter of Civil Rights, he is known for his strong enforcement of the Civil Rights Act of 1956, and a big proponent in keeping the Steel Belt's black vote away from entirely going to the Laborites in 1960. Overall, he has supported greater access to public accommodations, expansion of civil rights and protections; as well as advocated for better and climate-friendly urban expansion.
His looks and midwestern accent helped gain support in the early primaries, but has become noticeably gaffe-prone on camera. His ties to the Church of Latter-day Saints has held him back quite a bit, facing much backlash from well beyond the Conservative wing of the party. His country of birth, Mexico, has also caused his candidate eligibility to be under question. Nonetheless, Romney goes on making speeches arguing in favor of “American multiculturalism”; even releasing his tax returns to the public. A statement such as that has proved quite popular with the average voter, and no other candidate has yet to follow him in releasing their own tax returns.
